001I'm gonna apologize because I did not turn my microphone on for the intro, but I did call us to order at 6 p.m. That's all we missed on the recording. Um, we'll move now into the uh the fact that I have nothing to report of action taken in close session at this time and then we'll jump into public communications. Do we have any cards for today? Do I see anyone in the audience filling out a card frantically? I do not. Okay. So, then let's move into special presentations for this evening. And uh I do not see someone from ESTA in the room, but I do see someone from CSEA. Would you like to come forward, Carlos? Hello. Good evening everyone. President Miller Zariki, members of the board, cabinet. Um, just wanted to say, you know,

002that uh we had our uh follow-up negotiation session today for our job description study. And it's it's good to see that there's a we're seeing the light at the surface now, you know, as as we thread our way through the water and get to the top. So, um, we just want to thank everyone's availability during this summertime. You know, I know the schedules can be hectic. Um, but we appreciate everyone's time and and effort to make those meetings happen. And we just want to say that um we appreciate you guys taking the time to look over our our our requests. you know, it's it's we feel that it's in alignment with uh the goal to, you know, make sure that we keep valuable people um in in the positions, you know, holding the fort down,

003doing the quality work that they do. So, yeah, we just appreciate you guys taking the time to look over that information. And uh again, just thank you. Thank you so much for, you know, making that availability and the time to meet with us. So, that's that's all for me right now. Hope everyone's having a great summer. And of course, sincer regards. >> Thank you. Good to see you. Thank you for being here and for everything you do. All right. Uh we will move into our next very special presentation [snorts] and I'm going to turn this one over to Dr. Johnson. >> [sighs] >> President TMZ, members of the board, members of cabinet, Tracy, I would like to just take an opportunity to thank the great Cheryl Smith for her service. Uh, Cheryl has been uh

004my RPTA council president uh for my two years in the district and I um do have relative experience so I can say that Cheryl is the greatest PTA president and my career. Um I'm sure all the others will be great too. And I just uh really just want to acknowledge like when I think of like what makes PTA great, I think of Cheryl Smith. Um and uh you've just been such a partner from day one. Um uh always made me feel welcome. Helped me like understand the district as well also too. And uh you know there's so many things that we can point to. Daim and I were actually sitting in an audience like for a high school event and we were listening to the things that PTA provides and we looked at each other

005both like this is this wouldn't happen without Cheryl. [laughter] you know, from CPR trainings, the real deal day to the confidence code. Uh there are so many different initiatives that really are like what I would say a genuine partnership between the school and the school district, sorry, and PTA. Um and that really comes uh just from the your personal passion and the people that you make passionate around you as well too. And so I just um uh we're so we're so appreciative that we've started a new president which we're going to give PTA council presidents this piece of hardware and flowers and say nice things about them. You've you've set the standard. Um and I just I just really appreciate you also just as a friend and colleague. Uh you're absolutely incredible. I'm sure they'll

006have nice things to say too, but I'm going to stop talking and just give you a hug. Congratulations. >> Thank you. >> Yeah, really appreciate you. >> Thank you. All right. So, the question is, does Cheryl get to talk first or do we get to talk first? Because there's a lot of talking that I think is gonna happen around this. So, >> I think yes, Cheryl, would you like to >> Yeah, please >> say anything before we continue the glowing. >> We We're definitely gonna do a picture breath. Don't worry. >> We'll we'll do >> say some nice things. >> Hey, it's on. Um, so thank you very much. I'm very honored. And um, of course, I couldn't do it without these two people and my daughter Sammy um, who's now in Utah. We won't

007say anything more about that. Um, I I do want to give a shout out to Sammy. She might be watching. Um, she's actually now been approached by the National PTA to be on one of their committees as a student leader. So, this is what we're going for. This is the whole point of this is to support people who don't have a voice and give them a voice. So then that way they can feel heard and PTA PTSA can serve them because that's what we're here for. And of course to s support parents and make sure that they're getting the information that they need. And to see this all come to fruition is just fulfills my heart. and to be recognized for it. It just my it's just overflowing. My my glass is overflowing. I just

008thank you all so much for your support throughout the years. You've always been there for me even in my crazy modes to try, you know, to make it more fun and lively. I thought about coming with a song, but you know, um >> didn't want to take anything away from it. Um I did try and get Danny to bring his drum, but he's like, "No." Um, so thank you all so much for allowing me to be a little crazy and a little over the top about some things and and allow me to be passionate because that's what it is. And um, I'd also like to thank all my teams from elementary school, middle school, and high school the first time and council. I have had amazing people on my boards that have allowed me to

009do things and have empowered me and therefore I've been able to empower them to bring all kinds of new programs and new opportunities to our students and parents and that's truly what it's about. It's about the teamwork. So, thank you. I'm >> so excited. >> Thank you. Don't don't go anywhere yet. I'm sure don't [applause] board members. Anybody want to start? >> Hey, Cheryl. Um, you set a high bar. the people coming behind you are gonna have a tough time uh filling your shoes. Uh I want to say that with Cheryl, she spreads the love. That's what she does. And uh I've said it before, like I've come home at night and found a little package on my my doorstep. I'm going, "What the hell is this?" And it's something it's something that Cheryl has

010been driving around town dropping these [laughter] like pieces bags of love basically to to the community and um yeah it's been great working with you and uh the whole community loves you and uh keep doing what you're doing. >> Thank you. So I think one of the points that was made and there were several but one really sticks out and that is helping people find their voice and when I look at you I see exactly that you help people find their voice by allowing them to feel seen. I will say that I felt very special like I was the only one and then Frank said he was getting stuff on his doorstep and for some reason I was instantly jealous. However, what I know for sure is that Brad did not knit him a glove

011for his hand. So, with that, um, I do have to say to Brad, to Danny, and to Sammy who is watching or will watch, your love which you extend to the community also shows up through your family. You are absolutely amazing. And what makes it even special, more special is the fact that we celebrate you this week as a district, but the world gets to celebrate the fact that just this Thursday, this coming Thursday, you have been a gift to the world simply by your birth. And that is something that is absolutely amazing. And when this is over, you're going to turn around because there's somebody who thinks that you are absolutely amazing. not only for what you do for the community, but what you do for the individuals within the community. It's what I

012said, you have the ability to give a voice to everyone because you make everyone feel seen for just showing up. And even though everyone gets the treats, the people that go to the doorstep feel like they're the only ones. And that's the special when you special part when you can make someone feel like it's just them and they are special. From the high school students that sit on the PTSA to the adults who serve and continue to serve and follow you from school to school on PTAs because they feel seen. They know that you love them and most importantly you have given them an opportunity to have a voice. We appreciate you. >> Thank you. >> And happy early birthday. >> So, Cheryl, >> 30. Just 30. >> 30. Yeah. Um I I I remember

013way long ago when you were, I'm sure, a singer street president and it was my first time at a council meeting as the CTA rep. And so I got to experience the art of seconding. Um she was always the second, always the second. Um and you are not the second by any stretch of the imagination. You are first for all of us. But that was an exciting and I the energy that I saw in that room was oh my gosh. And then I realized as a teacher, you were going to be at the middle school. And then I got to experience Cheryl in a whole new way when she was the president at the middle school. And the way that she communicated with the teachers and helped the teachers and did everything that she could

014for the teachers because she understood that a happy teacher makes a happy student. and um and I appreciate you for that. And now I get to see you on a different level and I get to see all that you've done and all that you do and you share your energy and your love um for our students. Um which is why we're all here. Um that's why we've all taken this position and you have shown us that and you've shown the kids um as you started PTSA and and included the students as as part of the group. Um middle school had it and now the high school does and it's so exciting to see the kids be a part of that and you that is a legacy that you are going to get to have forever.

015Um, and and I just can't say enough how much we appreciate all that you do and will continue to do even when Danny's not around. I know Sammmyy's not around. Hi, Sammy. But you're still going to be helping this community and helping the kids in this community. Um, that's not going to go away. So, thank you. Um, we appreciate you and we love you. >> Thank you. I mean, where do I go after this? Except for I have a little bit more of a thank you for getting me here. You are the first person I said I You approached me at uh Yeah. Now you're hiding. Um you approached me at Center Street and I said, "I'd like to help." And you offered me an event and it does, but the thing is it's because

016of you that I did it and I continued. if you weren't a leader and someone that took the time to guide me during COVID. I needed you. There was no one else. We didn't even know what we were doing, but you still knew what you were doing. So, you guided me as a president during COVID and we walked early mornings and froze and I was on crutches. I mean, who walks with someone on crutches? You did. I mean, you're an amazing friend. You're an amazing leader and we're all just really lucky to have you a part of our life. and flowers and a plaque. They're amazing, but what you hold in our hearts is actually what means the most. So, just know you touch everyone in special ways. And I appreciate you and I know

017so many do. So, thank you. >> Thank you. >> And I'll wrap it up since I think I've possibly known you the longest because I was at Center Street before you and then you came in. Let's see if Sammy and Ryan just finished 13th grade. So, kindergarten. So, we've known each other 15 years now. Um, you came into that school and didn't stop. Like, you walked in with all this love and energy and excitement and it's still there. Like, I you are amazing to me. Like, and and I have to say indeed, she's a hard act to follow because no one else wanted to. I forced I was sort of forced into doing it there. But I will say I felt your support and your spirit and your energy every step of the way that

018I did that and I know I didn't live up to Cheryl Smith's standards. However, you were an amazing inspiration to me then and you continue to be this day. The fact that you again have brought the student voice forward, that's a thing that was talked about in PTA for years before that happened. And I knew after a few discussions we had about it, I knew you were gonna be the woman to make that happen. Like you are you are it. You did it. Like PTSA, it could be a thing, right? Yes, indeed. You made it a thing. So I I can't even imagine if we figured how many lives you have improved and and people you've you've brought up in the world through just being you and sharing your energy and love the way you

019have. I I can't I mean I I wish I could count that high. I I just can't. Um but but also I just want to say we are grateful. We know it's a lot. We know your family is a big part of this as well. So I'm glad that that they are partially here and that Sammy is here in spirit. Um but we we can't tell you and show you our love in the way that feels even slightly appropriate because there's just so much. If I could find one more pin for your hat, I would have got it for you because that's that's a long thing longstanding thing for us. But um I I know that that even if it's not there, you know, you're always on my mind. You're always in my heart because

020of how amazing you've been to me and this community. And we're just grateful. >> Thank you. >> So, thank you for being you. And I don't if anybody else wants to anything I mean PTA PTSA is just one part of the many you know you read Cheryl with email there's 20 titles under her name of all the things and I just want to say the fact that you continue to give and grow in different ways especially in your greenness. I'm very excited to see you branching out that way. But but I but again you you are the ultimate role model because you continue to evolve and grow and improve and bring everybody up with you as you do that. So >> thank you. Thank you so much. And we're definitely going to do a picture

021with Cheryl. So, [applause] >> okay, you guys have to come with me. >> Um, All right. Thank you everyone for pausing and letting us have our love for Cheryl moment. >> We'll be back to the regular schedule meeting in a moment. >> Excellent. Thank you. Thank you, Smith family, for being here. you you're allowed to go do more fun things and sit here if you wish, you know. >> Go. Yes. Time for ice cream or something celebratory. >> Okay. Because now we're going to move on to not not less important things, but maybe slightly less Yes. Woohoo material. Um but very important things. So, uh it's time for a presentation on the local indicators and Dr. Young will be presenting. >> Thank you. Good evening, President Miller Zarnicki, members of the board, Superintendent Johnson, Cabinet

022Tracy, Mr. Wheaton. It is my pleasure to present to you this evening are local indicators, a required component of our state's accountability model. The five local indicators I'll be speaking to tonight are priority one basic services, priority two, implementation of the California state standards, priority three, which is parental engagement, priority six, school climate, and priority 7 course access. The information collected can be based on either qualitative or quantitative data using local surveys, in-house reports, state reflective tools, and self assessments. Our first priority focuses on basic services, specifically appropriately assigned teachers, access to curriculum aligned materials, and clean and functional schools. I am happy to report that we had zero misassignments, 100% compliance on our Williams audits, and our we received good on our fit ratings, which is really great. Our next priority focuses on the

023implementation of state standards which is a self-analysis tool coupled with our stakeholder survey data. We use those to quantify our progress in the implementation of our state standards. The self-analysis tool is aligned to a rubric that had five metrics from stage one research and investigation to stage five full implementation and sustainability. I'm happy to share that we are fully implementing all the state standards in all areas with the exception of CTE in which we are in the initial implementation phase as we expand our CTE efforts. Next, I'll present the results for priority three, which is parental engagement. To quantify progress, the state requires us to use specific prompts to measure parental engagement. Thus, we've embedded these prompts into our annual surveys to rate our outcomes. Based on our consistent responses on our annual survey to

024parents, we have rated ourselves as for full implementation. However, we do recognize that more attention is needed at the secondary level in regards to parental engagement. It is important to note though that the secondary data from last year only reflects the middle school. So, it's not a true comparison from last year to this year. Priority six focuses on school climate and asks us to measure student perceptions of school safety and connectedness. For this measure, we utilize our student survey data to collect responses for four different prompts on the annual survey for students in grades 4 through 12. As you can see, we have consistent strong responses from our students with notable gains in elementary students having at least one trusted adult they can go to if they need help and secondary students feeling a greater

025sense of belonging. And finally, the last local indicator is for priority seven, which measures course access. We are required to use our own measures to track the extent to which all students have access to and are enrolled in a broad course of study based on grade spans, unduplicated student groups, as well as individuals with exceptional needs. We're happy to share and it should come as no surprise that our students all have access to all core content areas with the I want to highlight the addition of art and band at the elementary level. We have expanded our CTE pathways at the high school as well as increase our partnership with SoCal Rock and we are increasing our dual enrollment opportunities for students in partnership with El Camino College as well as our career pathway experience opportunities

026at the high school. And then lastly, we continue to have strong inclusion efforts districtwide. So, as a result of measuring this data, reporting the results to you tonight, and uploading the results to the California dashboard by July 1st, we have successfully met the local indicators requirements. Thank you. I welcome any questions you may have at this time. >> All right. Thank you, Dr. Young. Any questions from the board? >> You know, I'm excited about the Scrock stuff. We've been I I will I will say um that Dr. Young has worked with both Ashley and Brienne um on setting up some some classes and getting some things done with Dr. Johnson and they're super excited and I know we are too. So I can hardly wait to see all that kind of come to fruition. >>

027Agreed. Very exciting. I just have a question on the the secondary on um not that one the other one. Yeah. The treaty with respect for secondary how are we going to or what are our thoughts on how to create a better environment where they feel more respected or what is our goals with that? Yeah, I'm meeting with each principal to go over their annual survey results actually this week. And so, um, that's a focus for both Sarah and Steve. But it's also important that it's just really comparing both schools compared to just the middle school. And so, it's hard to say if adding the high school in this past year, this year really affected that. So, we'll have a better um true tracking of if things are improving or not next year. >> Okay. Awesome.

028Thank you. Okay, I think that looks like it from the board. Thank you again. >> All right, we are moving into consent agenda territory. Do we have a motion? >> I move approval of consent agenda items A through Q. >> Second. Any discussion on any of these items A through Q? Seeing and hearing none, all board members in favor, please say I. I. >> I. Those opposed. >> Motion carries. 5 Z. >> Moving into business services. Item 6A, approval to enter agreement with Sunrise Produce Company. Dr. Lint. >> Yes. as the district moves into um managing its own school lunch program. This is a contract with Sunrise Produce Company to produ provide produce for student lunches in the 26 27 year. I recommend approval. >> So moved. >> Second. >> Any discussion? For members in

029favor, please say I. >> I. >> Those opposed. Motion carries 5. Item B, approval of the 2627 fiscal year budget. >> Yes, I presented last meeting with Dr. Yan. All in favor, please say I. >> I. Those opposed? Motion carries 50-0. Item 6 C, approval of resolution 18 on how to spend the educational protection account funds. I move approval of action item 60. >> Second. >> Any discussion on these items? Hearing none. Board members in favor. >> I. Those opposed? Motion carries. 50. Item 6E, a notice of completion for the middle school bungalow retrofit. >> This is less exciting than it sounds. This was the project that allowed us to create temporary housing for the district office and the bungalow bungalows at the middle school. That project is complete. I recommend approval. >> I move approval of uh

031item 6E. >> Second. I think Heather got that one. Not sure. Yes. No. >> Heather's taking that one, I think. All right. Any discussion on this item? I bet the middle school's happy that you're officially all done and out of there. Um, all right. Uh, all in favor, so please say I. >> I. >> Those opposed. Motion carries. 5-0. And item 6F, approval to enter into an agreement with Perfection Pro Contractors. >> This one's a little more exciting. This is a contract to paint the exterior of Elsundo High School this summer. I recommend approval. >> I move approval of action item 6 EF. Second. >> Any discussion on this item? >> Seems like um by the name of the contract that might be too good to be true. [laughter] >> Yeah. What kind of guarantee

032comes? >> Yeah. >> They're they're bold. Okay. Excellent. >> Uh I I guess I'll just ask if if we do approve this, do you know how soon they'd start? Like what's the idea? So, we'll we'll file the notice to proceed and then we'll schedule with them. It's obviously the summer which is a busy time, but we have asked them to be completed the week before um teachers come back for school resuming. Fingers crossed. No delays. Okay. Thank you. Um with no further questions, board members in favor, please say I. >> I. Those opposed. >> Motion carries 5. All right. Let me go back to the screen. All right. Item 7A, approval of employment contract for chief business official, Miss V. >> Yes, it is my pleasure to introduce the employment contract for our new chief

033business official, Dr. Melissa Gooden. Many will remember Dr. Gooden from her previous service to the district. She's known for her collaborative leadership style, strong communication skills, and ability to build positive relationships with staff, families, and community partners. We're excited to welcome Dr. Dr. Gooden back to Eus EUSD and look forward to the experience and perspective she brings to this important role. Unfortunately, Dr. Gooden is unable to join us this evening, but we look forward to having her introduce herself to the board in her new role at a future meeting. I recommend approval. >> Okay. Do you have a motion for approval? >> I move approval of action item 7A. >> Second. >> All right. Any discussion on this item? All right. Thank you, Miss Field, for framing all that nicely. Board members in favor, please

034say, "I." >> I. >> Those opposed. Motion carries. 50. All right. Next on the agenda, we have approval of revised college and career teacher on special assignment job description. >> Yes. This item revises the college and career to job description to align with evolving needs of the college and career readiness program. Um the revisions expand the role to include um support of the CTE programs and industry partnerships and workbased uh learning opportunities. I recommend approval. >> So moved. >> Second board members. Any discussion or questions on this item? >> I just have a question. Is somebody in this role at the moment? >> Yes, it is our college and career TOSA and the um college and career center at the high school. Okay. Any other questions? Board members in favor. >> I >> those opposed.

035Motion carries. 5 Z. All right. Action item 8A, approval of my perspectives by Savas as the English uh as the ELA curriculum for Elsko Middle School. Dr. Young. >> Thank you. This adoption includes consumables, a class set of textbooks, and digital licenses for all students. It was placed on display at the middle school as well as at the back of the boardroom at the last meeting. We did receive one member who expressed concerns that portions of the curriculum rely heavily on shorterformational and literary excerpts and include fewer traditional classic works than they would prefer. Um, so it is important to note though that my perspectives is designed to provide a diverse range of contemporary and classic texts while developing critical reading, writing, speaking, and analytical skills. Additionally, the school will continue to incorporate fulllength novels

036as part of the instructional program, allowing students to engage in that deeper literary analysis and rich classroom discussions. So, I recommend approval. >> So moved. Do I have a second? >> Second. >> ALL RIGHT. I'm glad you mentioned the novels would still be a thing and reading full length. So, thank you. >> Any other discussion? >> I just Oh, sorry. I just have a question about the invoice. Um, the shipping and handling is like ridiculous. almost $25,000. And I'm just wondering what how that could possibly be like 10%. Does it include the taxes or something? >> It is a seven-year agreement and so there's consumables across those seven years. So it would be a couple thousand dollars each year to ship. >> Okay, makes sense. >> It is the other curriculum also. I was I'm

037very surprised by how much the shipping costs. >> Workbooks. >> I'm saying that when you ship, there's usually a book rate which is much cheaper than >> Okay. Any other questions or comments? Board members in favor, please say I. >> I. Those opposed. Motion carries 5. All right. 8B approval of mystery regulations uh and exhibit 1312.4 the Williams uniform complete procedures. >> All right. This was brought as information pending action at the last meeting. I received no revisions and I recommend approval. >> I move approval of action item 8B. >> Second. >> Any discussion? All in favor please say I. >> I. Those opposed. Motion carries. 5 Z. All right. Sorry, I keep touching the screen and it scrolls too much. All right. Item 8C, approval of curriculum for the AP business for personal finance

038course. Thank you. This is the adoption of the new curriculum for the high school course that's beginning next year. It was placed on public display at the high school and no feedback was received and I recommend approval. >> I appro I move to approve action item 8 C. Second. >> Any discussion? >> I have one quick question. I had someone ask me if it was going to be they were told it was going to be just for freshmen. >> Uh I don't believe it's going to be open just to freshmen. They're opening it up to other grades. >> Okay. I I thought I mean I was like, "Wow, AP right away in freshman year." So, okay. >> All right. Any other questions? All in favor, please say I. >> I. I. Those opposed. Motion carries.

0395-0. Item six. Sorry, not six. Why do I keep scrolling? Uh 8 D, uh, approval of theou and cooperation agreement between ESUSD and FFAI Robotics, Inc. Tell us about this. >> Sure. This is an MUN cooperation agreement with Fairday Future AI robotics incorporated, a local Elsagundo based company [clears throat] who specializes in robotics and artificial intelligence education to provide students with hands-on learning experiences in emerging technologies through summer camps and future opportunities such as internships. Additionally, they have generously gifted the high school with a professional embodied AI quadriped quadriped robot that we'll be bringing forward for your approval at an upcoming meeting. I recommend approval. 4-footed robot. [laughter] Have a motion for approval. >> I move approval. >> Second. >> Any discussion? Like does Frank get to take home the quadriped just for fun? See,

040see how >> it would look really cool. >> I know. Be walking your dog with >> a lot of fun. >> Um I I think it's a great opportunity. I think the theou is for one year, so I guess it's like a we're going to see how it goes and then hopefully continue it in the future if it's successful. >> I just love the collaboration with the community and the schools. It's just more um the more of the businesses that are coming of startups of different um different companies, our students have the ability to be a part of them, which is an awesome thing. >> Yeah, absolutely. I appreciate the two sides, the community and the school district working together to find a way that makes sense for helping our students get into their futures.

041>> All right. Uh with no further discussion, all in favor, please say I. >> I. Those opposed. Motion carries 5-0. Item 8E, approval of the LCAP. Dr. Young. >> Okay. As Dr. Lynn shared, we gave a riveting presentation at the last meeting on our LCAP and proposed budget, and this evening's local indicators presentation marks the final requirement for the adoption of the LCAP. I recommend approval. >> I move approval of action item 8E. >> Second. >> Any discussion? >> Thank you for all you guys did. I It's a lot of work. I'm I am the one that says always love the LCAP, though. So, not many say that, but it's the good work you guys do. >> It is a lot of work. I've been on the on the LCAP team as well. It's It's

042a lot of work. >> But all good info, all in one place. We love it. So, thank you for your partnership and making that happen. Any other discussion? All in favor, please say I. >> I. Those opposed. >> Motion carries 5. All right. Item 9A, approval to enter into an agreement with Class Link for Analytics Plus Services. Mr. Gana. >> Yes, thank you. Uh, this item is an enhancement to our existing platform uh, Class platform, providing an insight on student engagements with our digital learning resources. It helps us better understand the instructional technology, including how much time our students are with our district applications and also our district uh, devices. I move for approval. >> So, so moved. Second. >> Any discussion or questions on this item? Sounds like a necessary tool. >> Thank you

043for taking care of everybody. >> All right, with that, all in favor, please say I. >> I. Those opposed. Motion carries. 5 Z. All right, we will shift into looking at theformational calendar, which is much quieter, >> so pretty, >> much quieter than our last uh look. And just to note uh to folks that really pay attention that July 14th is our only board meeting for the month of July. So, you know, community wants to come out, have a good time, that's your one chance to do it. So, that's it. All right. Thank you for showing the calendar. We'll move into board member report time. Start with Mr. Glenn. >> Thank you. Uh well, lots happened since our last meeting, but I want to just focus on something that's in the future. Sadly, we're losing

044our beautiful Dr. Kim Lind to Manhattan Beach. And I'm just going to keep it very short. I'm just gonna say I'm gonna really really really really really miss you, Kim, because uh you've been a rock for us. Um you you came aboard and you just took on challenges like they were no problem. Like someone drops the ball, Kim picks it up and runs with it. Um our entire school bond program is a success because of you, not because of anybody else. Because of you. you quarterbacked the whole thing. You made sure the right people were in the right place and you took care of the money. And um another thing you did was you made the money simple for us to understand. There's all these complicated presentations that you've made over the years, numerous times

045every year, but you um made them with grace and with understanding for us who have no understanding of what you're talking about. but you made it easy for us to understand and um thank you. We'll miss you and good luck. >> So, in typical teacher fashion, I did not have not done any homework or written anything down since the end of the school year because I I'm on vacation. So, but I would like to I would like to um before I say some Kim words, um I would like to say I had my SCROCK meeting last night. Um the shortest SCRock meeting we've ever run, which was exciting. Um, but it was really important because I also got a chance to share uh last Monday I went um to the high school and got a

046glimpse of our first middle school um classes offered through the Ed Foundation with Scrock teachers. Um, and it was really fun to see those kids. I saw the the the EMT, they had the recessa Annies out. Um, I got pictures um from Dr. uh Rodriguez last week that that our fire department came and let the the EMT kids kind of, you know, get on the truck and see what it was and see all of the things. Um, which is a lovely communicate or community um piece of that. I walked into the I can't think of the name of the class, but it has to do with hair. And the kids were all in there braiding hair and twisting hair and just having the best time giggling and laughing. And then the third class was um

047a class on hardware hackers and the kids were on the computers and they were building these like aliens on their computers. Um and they all seemed to be just having a a wonderful time. Uh they shared with us last night that when we started the middle school program last year with Roondo Beach, we had 99 students that enrolled and this year we have touched 199 middle school students um have had a chance or will have a chance because we've got three more classes next week, but 199 students in our JPA are going to be exposed to what Scrock talk is all about. Um what kind of things they teach. Um and I'm and I'm we're really really proud of that. Um I'd also like to just um congratulate here. Um, I was um I I

048had a chance to listen to a national education forum today where our executive director from Scrock um spoke about the hop, skip, drive initiative that which is how we get our students um to Scrock and she was on a national forum and and we were one of three schools uh three districts from one was from Ohio and the other was from Izona um and talking about how we have used that to implement um getting our kids the opportunity to take classes, CTE classes, and make that el make those kids eligible. Um we had 13 completers from the senior class. Um and I will say that last week is by far my favorite week of the year. um as we got to, you know, watch all of our students graduate and promote and and all of

049those lovely things. Um and then I too would like to thank Kim. Um we we've we've spent a lot of time together on on multiple stages and I appreciate everything that you have done for this district. Um you stepped into a job that is not an easy job to do. Um, and you have done it seamlessly and made it look easy and it's not. And I appreciate everything that you've done for us as a board, but more importantly everything that you've done for everybody in this district. So, thank you very much. You will be missed, but we do know that we will see you around. As we close out another school year, I want to take a moment to recognize the incredible accomplishments of our students across the district. From promotions to graduations, these milestone

050celebrations have been a wonderful reminder of the growth, perseverance, and achievements of our students. Watching students take the next step in their educational journey is always inspiring and reflects the collective effort of so many people who support them along the way. I'd like to extend my sincere gratitude to our teachers, classified staff, administrators, and support personnel for everything that you have done this year to help our students succeed. Your dedication, patience, and commitment to not go does not go unnoticed. Every lesson taught, every encouraging conversation, every extra hour spent planning, coaching, mentoring, and supporting students has made a difference. Thank you for investing your hearts into our children and helping them reach to their goals. My heart also goes out to the Thatch family. As a schoolboard member, but most importantly as a mother, I

051cannot begin to imagine the pain of losing a child. Although I've never had the priv privilege of knowing Taylor personally, every story and kind word I have heard paints the picture of a young boy with a heart of gold. During this incredibly difficult time, I pray for strength, comfort, and healing for his family, friends, classmates, teachers, and all those who loved him. Taylor will always remain in our hearts, and his memory will continue to live on through this the many lives he has touched. Unfortunately, I'll not be able to attend our next board meeting due to mom duties. As we head into summer, I want to wish everyone a safe, relaxing, and well-deserved break. I hope our students, staff, and families enjoy time together and return refreshed for another great year ahead. And finally, to

052Dr. Lind. I've known you far longer than I ever knew I would be sitting in this seat. You've been a part of my children's educational journey and my own journey in education. Your leadership, dedication, and care for students have left a lasting impact on our district and community. Manhattan Beach is incredibly fortunate to welcome you back. And while I'm excited for your next chapter, I know I will miss you tremendously. Thank you for everything you've done for our students, staff, and families. Your influence will be felt for many years to come. Have a wonderful summer, everyone. So, I'm grateful I had the opportunity along with Dr. Johnson and Dr. Devontes to visit the Code Ninja black belt ceremony for one of the ESMS students. A great achievement. We were able to practice his game. I'm

053going to use the word practice loosely. Um, but definitely a great experience to see what students are doing. not only inside of the classroom but outside the extra effort. I also want to take a moment to circle back. We had a chance early in this meeting to celebrate Cheryl and they said there's something about life and wondering how people speak your name when you're not in the room. And now that she's actually not in the room, I want to continue to say that we appreciate you. And even in your absence, whether it's physical or not, your spirit is always ever present. I thank you for everything that you've done that you will do and just simply the way you show up. And in closing, to Dr. lens. I want to address you because I think

054there's something very special about a leader and not one just in title only. I have had the pleasure of watching you and you are absent of the word I. You are a we person. But that's not what makes you special. What makes you special is your temperament that is going to continue to propel you. You are calm. You are balanced. You are measured. You work well with others. You oftent times use your ears more than your mouth. And the work that you do is incredible because you do it with your heart. You are using all of your senses. And I don't look at it as we are losing you. I think we are gaining an ally in Manhattan Beach. We have a partnership where we can collaborate, where we can look to you, where we

055can still celebrate all of the things that you've done here that you will be able to do there as well. I lift you up. I want the world to understand what an amazing leader, female leader looks like. but unqualifying that a leader period. I thank you and I wish you nothing but the best and the legacy, the nuggets, the pieces of yourself that you have laid here will remain here. May your legacy continue. Thank you. >> All right. Um, I do want to reflect back on the fabulous week we had with promotions and graduations and all that. Such great energy. And again, I want to thank all the administrators, all the custodial staff, everybody that it takes to put on those amazing events. Obviously, the students and all their hard work to get through them

056and the parents and families and supporting them as well. But, um, a week of really joyous time, which is it's it's fabulous to get to that every year. So, that was wonderful. And um in slightly less exciting news, uh the LA County Trustes Association had another executive board meeting uh because CSBA wants support here and there and everywhere. And so we voted to send another letter of support out as they continue to hound the state about many things. Um so that that was I think the last thing I will have to report as the president of that. Um, and in the interest of time, I think I'm going to direct a lot of my energy to Kim, which is not surprising because we came in together. We came into this district, uh, not this district.

057I was here a long time before, but this boardroom at the same time. So, it's been eight years of working together in various capacities, various committees, various meetings, whatever. But um I have to say whatever we're talking about, which yes, it's usually about money because that's what CBO does. But but more importantly, what stands out to me is just your your your deep commitment to partnership and listening, your integrity, your your unwavering commitment to our students of today, but also tomorrow. Like everything your the way your brain works is so forward thinking. I'm always truly impressed. Um, I I will say some of those significant projects you've worked on have already been mentioned here. Obviously, the bond measure that you inherited. Uh, you weren't doing that when you first got here and then you got

058that. Um, is huge. And again, you own that with grace and and organization. And I mean, it's a lot. It's really a lot. But I learned a lot just in working with you on many levels of that. Uh I would say though that my fondest memory is walking and talking to uh middle school neighbors when there was some concerns about the construction in their front yard. But, uh, the fact that you were willing to take the time and get the steps in and walk with me and knock on doors and talk to people one-on-one directly, hearing them, understanding the concerns and and taking that into account um was was just such a beautiful, selfless, above and beyond opportunity for you. And um, even beyond that, like we spent time during COVID masked on the street

059handing out test kits to our students as they drove by, walk by, whatever. Like, you show up no matter what it is, even how weird and difficult and challenging, you're there. And always with with just that energy and focus and grace and and patience. Um, and speaking of patience, I would say I want to give special thanks to Kim for every time we have a facilities meeting and I bring up something green and she's like, "Oh yeah, here we go again." But she never says it. It's probably possibly in there, but I'm like, what about the solar and what about the trees and what about the native plants and all the things like you have absolutely heard me and I felt heard and and you've adopted some things in that way even to the point

060of inheriting the environmental committee for the district and honestly taking it to a whole new level with your leadership there. So, I want to thank you for that and that will sustain beyond you being here. all these things we just talked about will will be your legacy and and I'm grateful that you took the time and energy to make them happen while you were here. Um I would say lastly uh knowing that you're just going to be down the street gives me a little a little peace of mind. I mean I know for you it's a homecoming of sorts, but I feel like this has been your home as well. So now you have two homes, let's just say. Um, but but I am glad that you will only be next door and luckily I

061have really good relationship with that board and I have your cell number and I think we'll be okay knowing that you are now in a new role but just over there. We know where you are. We know you will continue to be our partner even if you are now official big time superintendent. Uh we we're we're glad that you could share so much of you with us these last eight years. So thank you. I think that's all I will share at this time. Thank you, President Miller Arnicki. Um, on the Kim side of things, uh, I had the great pleasure of speaking about Kim and her wondrous um, accomplishments at her going away uh, leadership party. So, I just I want to thank you for your partnership and I also want to give you the

062greatest gift that a superintendent can give a cabinet member during a board meeting, which is to be concise. Thank you. All right, moving on. [clears throat] Um on I I want to take a moment because we're going to address the inmemoriam. I want to take a moment just to acknowledge uh the Taylor Tash family um and the events that happened uh the Friday of our graduation or end of our school year. Um uh with this tragedy which mean like we'll take an opportunity to remember um there are a lot of people that were involved for the last two weeks um in order to support and come together as a community. And so I just want to take a moment to address those folks. So on the PTA side, PTA has been a complete partner with

063this um volunteering themselves for coordination, communication, and actually working directly with the family. So I just really want to thank all those PTA leaders um particularly Melissa Hughes. Um on the ed side, uh Ed Foundation also stepped up uh and trying to work with us for child care uh and providing camp and coordination. Um, so just special thanks to Carol who's in charge of those summer opportunities. Um, on the staff side, this was an enormous staff undertaking. So I do want to call a few people out. Um, Lisa on the communication and HR side. Um, Betsy Dwis who provided crisis management and counseling directly to the community um, and students and staff. Uh, Lorie Klein who was also there providing counseling. Sarah Chen who uh came out of baby retirement in order to provide counseling

064which we great like really really appreciated having um folks just coming out to volunteer like that. Jose Pacheco and Danielle Moore who are counselors from the middle school who came down and provided counseling. uh Pam Pamela Valvet Valvz um who is the elementary counselor who has been phenomenal and she's also doing some work tomorrow as well also too and been a true rock um because she started about midyear um and has been just such a help um with our elementary team uh David Msas he's a school psychologist who provided counseling Emily Moran the assistant principal at center street who has provided a lot of coordination and has been uh the the the true support mean like with Rose who is on the front line of things. Um Steve, Carrie, and Sarah who have volunteered from

065writing schedules uh to coordinating with the counselors to coordinating with staff. Um Marne uh and William who provided all the setup for the counseling that took place at Center Street. Um uh William even going to make sure we purchase Kleenex and water. I mean like these are the little details that take place um that uh happen because of the folks that volunteer to do so. Um I uh also uh just want to particularly thank um the uh few teachers um Valerie um who is uh the teacher of the older brother Jordan. um Stephanie who uh Chang who's the teacher of Taylor uh and Kelsey Littleworth uh who is a TLC teacher and also volunteered to provide uh child child care for the family as well too. Just again a massive team effort here. I particularly

066on the staff side want to thank principal Rose Erenss who is now the executive director. Uh Rose literally worked around the clock. Uh she has been in homes, she has been talking with community members, she has talked with students. uh she was everywhere all at once um and and lived it minute by minute. Uh so just uh cannot thank her enough. And then on the student side, I just want to acknowledge um that um that evening uh there were students that attempted to rescue Taylor and I just you want to acknowledge the you know the the character of our students. you mean like in those moments um also all of the students including my own daughter who have supported each other I feel like a lot of the community has come together you know like

067a lot of people have been open and transparent about you mean like how they feel and how this has affected them and I think that that is going to make us you mean as a community stronger um and then I finally want to thank the board the board authorized any and all necessary support um and critical moments no questions asked just do what you need to do in order to to help the community and help the families and so thank you like for providing um that access to those resources. On that note that concludes my superintendent report. Okay, on that we will move into our closing items and I want to just say our school community is deeply saddened by the loss of Taylor Thatch. We extend our our sympathies to Taylor's family and sincere

068condolences to his friends, classmates, and teachers. Taylor's young spirit will be remembered and missed by many, and our board shares in this heartbreaking loss for our entire school community. We hold Taylor's loved ones in our thoughts and stand together in support of one another during this difficult time. May we honor Taylor's memory through kindness, compassion, and care for one another. I would like to offer a moment of silence now in which we reflect upon Taylor's memory. Thank you for that moment. And now I report that we need to recess to close session. We'll do that now at 7:04 p.m. All right. I hereby reconvene us to regular session at 7:58 p.m. And now to report the action taken in close session. On the first student matter, the motion was upheld unanimously. On the second student

069matter, the uh vote of the board of trustees sorry uh the bo the board of trustees uphel upheld the the superintendent's design decision on records challenge and to deny the challenge the vote of the trustees were Miller Zarnicki I Wheaten nay um Southerntherland I'm sorry I beachley I Glenn I. On the third student matter, uh motion was upheld unanimously. And that is all I have to report of action taken in close session. So with that, I can now adjourn this meeting at 7:59 p.m.
