001All right. Good evening everyone. I'll call order at 6 PM for the regularly scheduled board meeting of the Escanov Unified School District governing board April 28th, 2026. Uh we will start this evening with the pledge of allegiance and I'm going to surprise Mr. and ask him to lead us in that. I didn't pre-warn him. All right. There is no report of action taken in close session because there was no action in close session. Uh now we have the agenda hearing period and public communications. I don't have any cards up here. I'm guessing we have no public communications. Yes. No. No. No. Okay. Uh we will move on then to our uh student representative report, Miss Pala. >> I love it. All right. Good evening everyone. Exciting to be moving into the busy month of May.
002Last week we had our prom assembly where the theme night at the museum was announced and the location is at the California Science Center. Tickets go on sale next Monday. And last night the high school hosted teacher appreciation night, a lovely night to recognize our hardworking teachers. ASB members were there present to pass out refreshments and snacks. This week the high school is conducting our annual scholar quiz tournament. This is a week-long trivia tournament where teams compete for a grand prize of $400. This is in partnership with Study Hut on Main Street. And I'm happy to announce my team Panic at the Quiz Bowl have made it to this third round. Um we have a choir concert this Wednesday in the auditorium and the theme is Night at the Movies. This Friday is commitment day
003at the high school where seniors show off their college merch um of the schools that they will be attending in the fall. And I'm very excited to announce that Legally Blonde was nominated for Jerry Herman Awards. Um, so this is a national celebration of outstanding student achievement in high school musical theater. And very exciting AP exams start next week and I wanted to thank all those who attended our AP research presentations last week in the auditorium. It meant so much to have you guys there. And that is all for my report. >> Okay, great. Thank you so much. Uh update from employee associations. Do we have some room from ESTA who would like to speak? Here comes Mr. Kelly. Two side notes before I get going right now. One, those AP research presentations were amazing.
004I was mind blown by the amount of work that had to go into those, the professionalism, and you guys can remember your stuff and memorize it where I'm still here reading off my screen. So, that says something. Um, so going from there, oh, yep, that just went away. So, as we head into what we optimistically are calling our final bargaining session, I just want to share that we're genuinely looking forward to the conversations ahead. We all know the goal, great students deserve great teachers, and making sure our classrooms continue to reflect the best of what the South Bay has to offer. On that note, it was great celebrating our new educators together two Fridays ago at Topgolf. Always a good reminder of the strong community we're building. We're continuing to build. All jokes aside, we're
005hopeful that this will be a productive, collaborative, and maybe even efficient round of bargaining. Here's to working together, finding common ground, and hopefully wrapping things up on a strong note. We appreciate your partnership. Thank you. >> Great. Thank you. Come on up, Carlos for CSEA's update or words of wisdom, whatever you'd like to share. >> Hey, good evening members of the board, Superintendent Johnson. I just wanted to give an update on our last session. We had a really good discussion where it feels like we're nearing the end of uh the the language part of the job description study. So, you know, that's, you know, looking good. Um, we also look forward to setting some dates for our contract negotiations. you know, as we spoke with our eboard and we're willing to, you know, negotiate throughout
006summer, you know, balance kind of two plates and, you know, accomplish the most that we can again to, you know, set everything in place and to piggy back on Mr. Kelly's, you know, always provide the best for our students. Um, and then a brief message from Armando Pil who is a custodian over at Center Street. he's experiencing some hardship with his family and he would just appreciate your support in his request for catastrophic leave as he's the sole caregiver for his father who's recovering from a uh an operation. So yeah, just that's that's it for me tonight. Thank you. >> All right, thank you for the update. And now our final special presentation tonight is for Eagles Nest Preschool. So I'll invite Miss to come forward and share that with us. Okay. Is this on?
007There we go. Um, good evening and thank you for your continued support of Eagles Nest Preschool. Um, I'm excited to share a look into our program, what our students experience each day, and where we're headed next. At Eagles Nest, we focus on creating a warm, welcoming environment where children really feel safe, supported, excited to learn. Our goal is to help every child build confidence, curiosity, and a strong foundation for their future. Oh. Oh, I need to turn it on. Sorry. There we go. Um, our students have many opportunities to create throughout their day through art and hands-on projects. They explore their creativity and express themselves in meaningful ways. Whether they are painting, building, crafting or working on collaborative projects, these experiences help strengthen fine motor skills, encourage problem solving, and allow each child to take
008pride in their own work. Exploration is a big part of the preschool experience. Whether indoors or outdoors, students engage in hands-on activities that allow them to interact with their environment and stay actively engaged. We also embrace the messiness that comes with learning at this age because those hands-on, sometimes messy experiences are often where the most meaningful learning happens. From sensory play to outdoor discovery, these moments help children build confidence, independence, and a natural love for learning. Learning is embedded throughout the day. Students are introduced to early literacy and math con concepts while also developing important social emotional skills like sharing co sharing cooperation and independence. Through teacher-guided activities, group learning, and daily routines, children begin building those foundational skills they will carry with them through TK kindergarten and beyond. We also incorporate enrichment opportunities such
009as music and movement along with themed activities that bring variety and excitement to the program. These experiences give students additional ways to learn through participation, creativity, and active engagement. Whether it's songs, dancing, celebrating seasonal themes, or participating in special classroom activities, enrichments help make learning more memorable and fun. Building strong relationships with families is a priority in our program. We value open communication and creating meaningful opportunities for families to be involved in their child's experience. Throughout the year, we've seen wonderful family participation as you can see with these photos. Whether it's was um families joining us for field trips, supporting student donations during the holidays, or coming together for special events like our readathon campfire with s'mores. We also had a great turnout at our Halloween trunk or treat where families, district leadership, and even
010our local f fire department came out to support our students. My favorite one was the haunted eagle's nest. Um, that one really really hit home for everyone. These moments help strengthen the connection between school and home and build a strong sense of of community for our children. Our program is deeply connected to the community around us. We create opportunities for students to experience and engra and engage with the world beyond the classroom. For example, our visit to the fire station gave students a chance to connect with local first responders and learn more about their role in keeping our community safe. We also visited the library where students were introduced to a space that supports early literacy and a love of reading. As we look ahead, we're excited about several important updates. We will be relocating
011back here to the district office, um, expanding our program to include 2-year-olds and continuing to grow to better meet the needs of our families. We are also implementing a system called Brightitewheel which will streamline enrollment, billing and communication with families. It will also provide a more efficient and secure sign in and sign out process for our families. This system will help simplify daily operations for staff while giving families easier access to important information and a stronger day-to-day connection with our program. And lastly, I want to leave you with um because I feel feel like one of the best ways to understand the impact of Eagles Nest Preschool is to hear directly from the students. Um so here's a short clip that highlights one of our students sharing what Eagle's Nest means to him and how
012he feels about being part of our program. >> I love my teachers, all my friends, and Eagle's Nest. It may be short, but I think it's straight to the point. Um, and his words really truly capture the heart of what we strive to create every day. Uh, thank you for your time this evening. We're really proud of the experience that we provide for our students each day and excited for the growth of our program. Thank you. >> Great. Thank you for being here. Board members, any comments or questions or anything besides all the big smiles we have on our faces because they're so cute? I think uh I mean we're excited that you're coming back here for sure. I mean we I I know I could say the community has been very patient and waiting
013so anxiously to come back here and and I'm glad that you're here to help everybody come back and enjoy the new space. >> We're really excited. Thank you so much everyone. All right. Now, we'll move into our consent agenda. We have items A through J. Any polls or a motion from my board? >> I move to approve consent agenda items 5A through J. >> Second. >> Okay. Those opposed. >> Motion carries. 5 Z item 9A, approval of a creative curriculum adoption for Eagle's Nest. Dr. Young, >> thank you. This item requests approval of the adoption of creative curriculum as the curriculum for all of our preschool classrooms. This followed a comprehensive review process with multiple curriculum options, and the preschool team unanimously chose this curriculum as the most developmentally appropriate, play-based, and instructionally sound resource available. I recommend adoption. I move
022approval of action item 9A. Second. >> Any discussion on this item? >> Yeah, I have a couple of questions. Um, so I looked through the the document um explaining uh the curriculum. And so what I'm wondering is um why do we need a curriculum for um Eagle's Nest? Um my feeling is that uh there's a possibility with this that it's a one-sizefits-all and that um a lot of the u the teaching that our youngest kids get is through the personality of their teachers and I just wonder if this is pushing our teaching staff in one direction where it would um interrupt that natural flow. Yeah, I think that it's important to always have a curriculum for teachers to have as a framework to work off of that's aligned with like the preschool learning foundations which
023are the standards that drive our preschools. Um, we still retain of course teacher autonomy and the curriculum is very developmentally appropriate and very playbased. And so teachers would just have resources where they're not going to feel the pressure to have to supplement or create their own curriculum, but they'll have this great bank to be able to pull from. And our goal is to create a lot of alignment throughout the district and to prepare our students for the skills necessary to succeed in TK and K. >> Is this replacing a curriculum that's in place at the moment? >> Yes. So they have curriculum in place in the moment, though it is being used rather sparingly. And so Hannah has really engaged in a more robust process with the teachers because they want to ensure that there
024is consistency across the rooms and that they are able to utilize that curriculum um more soundly. And so um they really enjoyed this one out of all the options because it came with a lot of options for them and manipulatives but also that freedom to be able to still um teach the way that they know best. >> So So there was teacher involvement in sele. Yes. >> And will they have some training on this curriculum? >> Yes. >> Any other questions or comments? Okay. Thank you for that. That was helpful. Maddie, your preferential vote. >> I. And board members in favor. >> I. >> Those opposed? Motion carries. 5 Z. All right. Item 10A, approval of board policies and administrative regulations and exhibits. Dr. Platkin. >> Yes. These are the CSBA recommended policies in the
0255000 series. They were previously presented as information pending action. I received no comments or questions and I recommend approval. >> So moved. >> Second. >> Any discussion on this item or these collective items? No. All right. Maddie, your preferential vote. I and board members in favor please say I. >> I. >> Those opposed. Motion carries. 5 Z. All right. Now we move into the reports section and we will take a look at theformational calendar which you can see there. Lots of meetings and activities coming up in May. Staff appreciation week being a very important one as well. All right. that will be posted that is posted rather and everyone can continue to look at that and mark their calendars. All right, we'll move into board member reports. We will start down there with Mr. Glenn.
026Thank you. On April 15th, I attended Center Street School PTA meeting. Uh President Christina Freighic completed her final meeting as president and the primary topic of discussion was the upcoming father's daughter's dance which I wasn't at. So maybe somebody can report on that later. Um, and it was I know it was a joint uh dance with Richmond Street School. So I'm sure an amazing affair. Um, a celebratory installation meeting and dinner for the incoming board is planned for May 20th. Um, at our recent facilities advisory committee, we discussed many closeout issues for the final piece of the Prop 92 puzzle. And I want to give a huge kudos to Dr. Kim Lind for shephering this massive project from inception to conclusion. Um, Saturday at the Run for Ed was a little the little bit windy
027version this year. Last year was a little bit rainy version, but records were broken in the men's 5K where Brian Justy ran a 1636 5K, which makes him the record holder in the men's five and 10K. And while Elsagando resident Alejandra Santiago bested the previous record and finished the 10K course in 3742 or six minutes and 4 seconds a mile and Alejandra is also the record holder of both the five and 10K. Other notables in the race were um Valvoil in the 10K. she won her division. And Megan Macccan in the 5K who won her division and Randy Boykins crushing it with a stroller. Uh Daima and Dr. Jay graced the 5K course and one of them pipped the other and maybe we'll find out who. And uh lastly uh last night I attended the
028PTA awards and founders day tea an extravagant event in the south quad and kudos to Dr. Johnson for receiving the PTA administrator of the year award from your admiring fans on the PTA council. End of report. >> So I'd like to just start really quickly. The AP research projects were incredible and I did get to sit in on Maddiey's and and it was spectacular. So, congratulations. It was was great. The last couple days I've also had the privilege of attending the PTA honorary service awards and I was also a volunteer for the PTA run for education. Um, it's this time of year where we like to think about our PTA people. Um, so thank you to everyone who participated in one or both of these events, who continue to be in our classrooms and volunteer
029for our kids. Um, we couldn't do all that we do without our PTA. So, thank you. Um, last weekend I attended the Lion King musical, Lion King Jr. Musical at EMMS and it was magical. There were so many kids. They made their own masks. It w it was it was just amazing. The kids were having a good time. Um and so thank you. Uh that was that was an amazing huge success. Thank you to everybody who kind of helped make that happen. Uh my SoCal Rock highlight was open house that I attended last week. Um, I continue to be in awe as I every time I go out there, I find new programs, new things going on. Um, they've done a really good job of allowing the students to shine at open house. They take
030you around. They give you tours. They talk about what they're doing in their programs and how excited they are um to be doing the things that they're doing. Um, so thank you to all the students, the administration team, and all that's going on. We will be welcoming a new principal at SoCal Rock, which is kind of a new position um that I'm very excited about, as well as a few new classes um coming next year, including a culinary some culinary classes. So, that'll be exciting. And then congrats again to the Elsaundu Middle School on their distinguished school award. Um I hope you enjoyed the tacos last Friday as much as I did. And that's my report. Okay, my report. Um I recently had the opportunity to attend the Elsaga Middle School open house and I
031wanted to share what a positive and engaging experience it was. One of the highlights for me was the PE program's interactive approach. Students performed their dance routines they created in class which not only showcased their skills but also brought a fun and energet energetic element in the evening and with my child a lot of just laughing the entire time. I told him I had videos forever to keep with him. Um I also truly appreciated visiting Spanish one where where Pro Croft took the time to have a live conversation in Spanish with Jax. It demonstrated both student learning and teacher dedication in a very personal and memorable way. What stood out overall was the level of effort, creativity, and intentionality of our middle school teachers put into open house. It's clear that the this kind of
032engagement is not something every district consistently achieves. Even though students at the middle school level rotate between classes and are becoming more independent, this event was a great reminder that they still have so much to share and that connection with families remains incredibly important. Lastly, I want to recognize the experience of attending the middle school volleyball games. I'm very grateful to Coach Kyle, aka Mr. Kyle, for the time and energy he invests in teaching the game, particularly to sixth graders who are just getting started and have no clue what's going on. His passion is evident and reflects a deep commitment, not only during school hours, but well beyond them. Overall, the past couple weeks reinforced how fortunate we are to have such dedicated educators and staff supporting our students during these important middle school years.
033Send my report. April is the quiet before the storm. So, we're getting ready to ramp up for all of the wonderful events for May and June. So, please buckle your seat belts because we will be moving fast. In terms of the events that I attended, April 22nd, I had the pleasure of attending the AP research and the topic at the for the that I attended was volunteerism, social media advocacy. Beautiful job done. And just to give you a quick highlight, it is really about how in social media we can highlight things where we can like them, but we're not really doing the service that we would do when we're away from social media. So I thought it was beautiful to have that from the perspective of a student where social media is a lot of
034the time a lot of times the way that they communicate they engage and that they receive their acceptance. I want to give a special thank you to Miss McNeel for all that she does in preparing and supporting her students. I also bless you. I also want to acknowledge that many may not see everything that she does behind the scenes, but this year I personally had a chance to witness the abundance of support that she provides. And I want to say to her a true thank you because she embodies the ed slogan that every student wins. So if you're listening, thank you for your support. On April 25th, I had the opportunity to attend the run for education. I just want to piggy back to what Frank said. He didn't give any names. In my defense,
035my shoe was untied. I had to pull over to the side. It was hard to get my steam back up. That's all I'm going to say about that. >> You know, I'm I'm gonna leave that alone. We're going back to our scheduled programming. Yes. Yes. Uh, I want to take a moment to thank the uh, Elsagundo PTA council and the units, this year's amazing title sponsor, the Kuanas, along with this year's chair, Jim Fenton, as well as the 37 sponsors listed on the back of the race day t-shirts and the seven friends of the run and the 11 in sponsors, all listed on the website. Thank you lastly to our very own ESUSD parent, Eric Christensen, founder of Locality Designs, who year after year finds a way to craft the best shirts for us for
036the run for education. So very, very proud. Does a great job. And for the 5K, my time came in at 37 minutes 44 seconds. very proud of that for someone who's not a runner. My last event is April 27th attended the honorary service award which Frank already talked about. want to congratulate all of the nominees and the winners, but I also want to take a special take an opportunity to give a special thanks to this year's Golden Oak Award winners. And that is which is by the way the most prestigious award for the honorary service awards and that one this year went to Ara and Maggie and they are affectionately known as the ultimate cold stone sponsors. So, they used to own Cold Stones. They no longer do, but when they were here, they gave
037us their all. And we will always remember them. We will always appreciate them. We will miss you. And I want to say thank you. And last but not least, the Richmond Street School PTA installation dinner will be held on May 18th at 6 PM. Thank you. >> Great. Um, I'm g go back to Saturday the 18th. The uh city in conjunction with um the Elskundo Blue Butterfly Conservancy hosted a poet laurate day at the Elskundo hillside where we have the blue butterfly environment. And I want to give a shout out especially to our high school interns that were there helping with the event. It was it was a neat all ages, all skill sets in writing poetry or not. Welcome. um and and our interns were out there and very involved in that. So, it's
038great to see them integrating in the community that way. Um and that was an excellent lead into Earth Week. So, I want to thank all of our sites and staff and students for all the brainstorming and energy that went into all the activities across our campuses. And I hope that we can, you know, keep it moving forward, keep that green thinking sustainable and all. So, yeah, all good. Um, last week I logged into a virtual ALAX meeting. We had uh the climate action pathways and CSBA presenting. Uh, CSBA was there to talk about the four bill package for student achievement. So, we do have a recording of that if you would like to tune in that way. If not, I'm happy to tell you more. Um, the last LAX meeting of the year is May
03918th, which also conflicts with several things here locally. So I expect I will be on that on my own and that's okay. That'll be the last one in which I presside as the president and so uh I'm happy to see who is my successor in that space. Um I think oh we covered FAC already which yes shorter meetings means we're getting close and I want to say the term in that AP capstone that has stuck with me that that I saw was slactivism. So activism is being, you know, advocates for causes, but mostly online clicking likes and doing videos and things, not actually out doing work. So it's very I learned a lot and in that and a couple other presentations that I was able to attend. Sadly, I missed Maddiey's, but I uh I
040am constantly amazed at these students and what they can do. So I I by by by missing Maddie's I actually kind of certified what hers was about and menopause menopause brain and all that. I I actually yes living proof that you your studies were actually uh accurate. So anyway uh that that's that's enough that's enough of that. I um I just want to say I'm going to wrap it up. get over to uh the spring band concert is happening right now at the PAC. So, I'm going to keep it short, head over there, and just remind folks to buy your tickets for the gala next Friday night, coming up quick. So, hope to see you all there in your golden best style. So, all right. Oh, what's that? >> Golden whatever you want to do
041is what we're going to see. So, anyway, that's it for me. Thank you. Thank you, Madam President. Uh, so on the Yes, I was in attendance at the father and daughter dance uh with Matilda. It was lots of fun. Um, a lot of me following her around. Lots of sugar. Thank you to the PTA volunteers that made it happen and the dads that stood around awkwardly with me. Uh, on the partners uh so uh last week we had the partners and partnership uh dinner with our PTA presidents uh incoming and outgoing. Um it was a really great opportunity to kick off uh what will be for next year with team building um and uh continuing to develop those relationships and strategies about working with PTA as you know as our partners for next year. So
042uh we'll come back together in the fall um in order to uh do some more in-depth planning. We focus mostly on goal setting and vision and relationships and we ate good food. Uh yes, Gala Gala Gala uh buy your tickets. Um the theme is uh a golden night for education and you heard it here that the board is going to dress to the nines uh and gold. >> Uh so >> that's the word on the street. >> The streets are talking. They say that you're all going to bring it. So really excited. Uh also heard that Steve Gart's gonna dance. So I just >> I heard that. >> Yeah. Yeah. words on, you know, the streets are talking. Uh, okay. On the staff side, um, this is a time of year where if you, um,
043are, uh, have a child with an IEP and you're going to the next school level, so elementary to middle or middle to high school, um, they have what they call transition meetings and it's a lot of work uh, for everyone involved, uh, the families uh, and the staff. So, I just want to give a a shout out thanks to all of those special education staff members that are doing transition meetings right now. Just a lot of thoughtful work goes into that. So, I thank you for that. On the staff side as well, I want to thank the M staff team for uh last week uh quite literally building the district office uh or the the uh various uh furnitureures or walls or taking down gates, you mean and just sort of kind of making the
044place more livable. Um but uh M staff was out here just I mean every corner was building something. So thank you to them. A lot of work. Uh my congratulations to incoming president uh Brandon Kim. I hear it will be a peaceful transfer of power. Um so you you hope Okay. All right. Let me know. I I'm good for another year. So forget Brandon. I don't know that fool. >> Yeah. Um nice guy. Smart smart guy. Yeah. Good decision- making. Okay. All right. So well that's what we have workshops for. So okay. Um, and then I want to give a shout out to Harper Green, the uh, uh, first recent uh, ESMS president. Um, uh, Mr. Troche took over student leadership this year, which has been really, really successful. But, uh, when we were walking
045classrooms, we had the opportunity to see Harper preside over a meeting, which was awesome. Uh, um, the Greens are well known for, uh, you could probably leave them in charge of a classroom and everything would be fine. And then on the event side, tomorrow, yes, tonight is the band performance. Tomorrow is uh the Elsagundo High School choir performance. Um Steve and I will probably cry again together, so looking forward to that. And then uh next week is SAW week uh or staff appreciation week. Um this is always a really fun week. I I love it when parents fight over fight over each other in order to spoil our staff. Uh it's a nice feeling. uh the board of education and the leadership team will be out on Friday to beat the parents to the punch
046because there's no space for us because they're so busy doing everything for our staff that we have to squeeze it in on Friday with a coffee cart going around the sites. Um but it's just a it's a nice week. It's it's a great tradition and and I I I too appreciate our staff and I really appreciate our parents and our families that spend a lot of time thinking of creative ways to celebrate them. And then on the board side, I want to thank uh Frank for our meeting last week. I got to learn a little bit about Frank's passion um and about his boating experiences and I had a we had a nice lunch. Um so thank you Frank for for hosting me. And that concludes this guy's report. >> All right, with that we
047do not need to recess to close session. So I'm happy to adjourn us at 6:43 p.m.
