work we also had an update on the progress with footsteps to brilliance as well as update from the educational leadership work done with the administrators in the district for this year and lastly what we did touch on which is a big part was the special education update and discuss the content within there and the impact at different schools in this special education diagnosis and rate and that was the content of that meeting thank you any referrals at this time we'll have the superintendent's report by mr tastani thank you thank you very much just a few items first i would like to congratulate roosevelt school for being selected to continue for an extra year on this in the commissioner's network um due to their progress the state board of ed decided to extend their funding for
an additional year to continue the work that's been done successfully at roosevelt schools that's not usually something that's done without showing a tremendous growth in progress despite the pandemics so congratulations to roosevelt um last week we held a job fair at central high school's library almost 100 candidates came through um from various uh certification areas as well as folks looking to be paraeducators so that was an encouraging day in our recruitment efforts there will be another one scheduled for the week after school gets out more details details to follow thank you to dig soccer and chess who held a chess tournament yesterday at central high school with about 40 students who participated and a big thank you to josephine thomas teacher at central high school for helping organize and plan the event it was extremely

county chapter congratulations to ervin edie from basic high school michael alvarez from bridgeport central and sebastian flores from harding high school and that is it for oh well one last i'll be remiss if i did not say thank you to the collaboration between the bridgeport public schools facility department city of bridgeport folks connecticut climate and jobs fairfield county building trades the green village initiative groundworks bridgeport and carbon free and healthy schools who came out from nine to one pm last saturday may 14th at curiel school um building trades did uh painted the cafeteria electrical trades changed out a lot of lighting throughout the building to brighton we had mulch going on and painting going out going on in the back they cleaned out the garden a lot of work was was done they took out

so there's no old business to transact so we're gonna move to new business um which is discussion and possible approval of central high school overnight field trip to health occupation students of america leadership conference in nashville tennessee who will be here to present for this item ms francisco can you please present good evening francisco's going to turn the mic down for you good evening i'm mrs francisco from central high school and this is um tiara campbell who is a student who hopefully with your approval will be going on this trip i'm going to let her speak first let's let him know why you want to go good afternoon my name is tara campbell and i really want to go to ilc to gain all the leadership opportunities that it provides for me they have many
opportunities for scholarship for certifications that can help me further my career path in the medical field when i grow up i want to be a travel nurse so they have many opportunities and information that can help me become a travel nurse thank you um what tiara hasn't told you is that she has been selected from the students in connecticut hosa to carry the flag at the opening ceremonies to represent state of connecticut she has also been chosen to be an ambassador while we're there to assist students who are going to their competitions to make sure that they get to the right places and she is also enrolled in leadership courses because she today was elected vice president of hosa for next year [Applause] and she will be attending leadership for beginners so that she can
bring that back to our hosa club she'll be attending leadership for new leaders and also some advanced leadership specifically for leaders in our local chapter so she will learn how to engage committees to assist on those committees and to develop more of her own leadership skills while she's there um did you want to say anything else before i keep talking okay so the international leadership conference is an amazing opportunity for our students while we only have three students going this year each of those ladies has been elected to an office for next year to serve hosa and they want to hit the ground running we did take advice of the panel last week or the board last week and our leadership is thinking of new ways to encourage the male population to not only join
hosa but to stay in hosa because it seems to be a 10 percent uh female dominated uh club and that is both nationally and internationally and so we are hoping to um increase our male membership and participation they are also going to have some strategies for our leaders at the ilc in order to help us do that the ladies are going to be participating as voting delegates they are also going to be participating on the executive panel which will choose leaders and we'll choose community service projects projects that we'll be working on nationally internationally and in our local chapters it is our sincere hope that you vote for the students to go because all of the skills that they will be learning is part and parcel of developing their vision of the graduate skills which
is a connecticut mandated portfolio and so each portion of the ilc allows the students to develop all four of those skills thank you i believe this information is in everyone's pockets but i will leave the floor open for any questions comments concerns sorry yes i have a question that i did not ask the last time is there any additional covet protocols that's happening for the conference especially since it's health related right and if so just what are they do it require does it require testing of our students before they go on the trip before all of our students have to have proof of vaccination and all the students who are going and myself have had our vaccinations and our booster so we have to have proof of those vaccinations we do have supplies of face
masks when we are in a gathering where there are a lot of people especially if we're going to be within 10 to 15 feet of them they will be wearing face masks the whole time the only time that they will not be wearing their face masks when we are outside or are when they are alone so um we also have other health protocols and that part of the student fees that they pay guarantees that there will be assistance for them if there's any medical related issues that should arise when we are on conference premises and when we are off premises even to go to dinner they have our locations so that we can immediately get additional assistance should we need it nice i have another question what year are you at central what grade are
you i'm a junior at central nice and i recall from the teaching and learning committee meeting there's opportunities as well for our students to meet with different colleges is that correct and is there a particular college you're looking forward to seeing i'm looking to go to fairfield university because they have a really good advanced nursing program that i'm interested in will they be at the conference i'm not sure but i can check and look i'm just encouraging you definitely while fairfield university i do not believe is going to be there she'll be bringing back information to the students for next year from all the colleges and universities that will be there very nice thank you any other questions comments i like to entertain a motion to accept this trip all right moved by mr joe
seconded by mr macaron all in favor aye aye aye any opposed any abstentions hearing on congratulations have a great trip thank you very much thank you our next item is discussion impossible approval to award discovery education science contract [Applause] hello everyone pardon all my stuff here but thank you all i appreciate the time you've taken uh both last week and uh here to hear about our uh discovery education uh agreement that we are seeking approval for um i believe you all have a copy of the powerpoint that i shared with the teaching and learning committee last week so i won't go through it in all the detail but sort of the cliff note version we convened a group of leaders amongst the science staff here in bridgeport public schools led by myself including other administrators
as well as science leaders from around the district we made the initial choice to look at four different companies ones that are known players within bridgeport public schools and in education uh those being hmh discovery education sabas which is formerly formerly pearson and activate learning uh we engaged with these companies and heard live presentations from all four of them at the same time while we were hearing live presentations many of them in this room uh there were presentations going on virtually to the science teachers throughout the district uh so they could engage and see what the products uh and offerings were from these companies [Music] we then surveyed everyone we asked a range of seven different questions at the three different grade bands and these questions were about our special needs learners our english language
learners the quality of the online and digital resources and various other aspects of the programs discovery education won 10 of those 21 categories with the next company coming in at four of those wins so it was thankfully a clear winner amongst those companies and um again a question was asked last week but the middle and high school specifically there were clear winners the discovery education was um another thing that was of note is that our special needs learners and the relation to everyday life for our students which were two questions uh discovery education were clear winners amongst every one of the grade bands in those two categories which um you know we thought was great uh and so we did enter negotiations with discovery education uh we had certain objectives uh mainly being that uh
we wanted to get a program that will align our district k-12 over time um we want a deal that would uh not have us overextending fiscally in any one of those years we want a deal that would include print for our youngest learners so at the k5 level every year there will be print coming for our learners in this form of science workbooks and we also want to include mystery science which is a favorite for our k-12 both teachers and learners um it's a engaging way to kind of introduce science topics and um and that is part of the package as well so and finally just being fiscally responsible and educationally sound and finding the best mix of those two um i appreciate the help of dr jenkins our cfo ms siegel and the work
that they did in kind of reaching this agreement um and so uh the last thing uh there were there are other school districts around uh many of which have had long-term agreements with discovery education um i happen to be at a meeting with the director of technology of merit in public schools since we've last met and she also acknowledged the quality with which discovery education works in their district um and so uh with that we are hoping for um the approval for this to go forward and appreciate your time thank you thank you i believe this information is in everyone's packet as mentioned but we will open up the floor for comments questions or concerns anyone uh mrs callaway can i see the kid please yes so mr skullvick had asked for an example of
a kit i did share with you just about a half hour ago a uh video i'll share that with the whole board but this is a kit for a fourth grade lesson it's called hit the slopes it as you can imagine deals with the angle of car the speed and kinetic energy are the main objectives um but what i really like about this and i think about you know all of our staff members so we have certainly plenty of parents who may have hot wheels cars at home but if we've got younger you know staff members who are right out of college not always easy to find so the other nice thing is that this clearly labeled hit the slopes this is what you would take out as a fourth grade science teacher when you
go to do this unit accompany that with the video that i shared with you there's tons of support beyond that there are teacher notes on the online platform to really see it but here is the kit thanks [Applause] nice does that offer you a question all right just one other one other thing to note you know even in there there's a sticky note pad which some might think well you know this is a science we you know we don't need that but we do driving question boards or we want we encourage kids to create questions and post them and think about them and i wouldn't want any teacher to have that be what's holding them back from doing the lesson so i really i like the kind of all-in-one package there that that's what you
need to conduct that lesson i'm hoping we can put that in the hands of our teachers here in bridgeport um thank you mr bennett no questions all right um i know it's making its way around for everyone but if i hear no questions i would like to entertain a motion to accept this contract next second one more time second okay we'll take christine's all right um it's been properly second all in favor any oppose any abstentions hearing none thank you and we look forward to this contract thank you very much appreciate [Applause] last it on our agenda is discussion and possible approval of new basket high school project cost slash budget you'll probably want to move your seats as big as a presentation my name is elaira shelling i'm program manager in the british sports
school construction office yes you know joe costa from perkins eastman we'll give you a brief presentation on the site floor plans and the appearance of the building we need approval to go to the state to get approval on to go to bid on phase two which is the construction of the building we're finishing up phase one we should be finished in the next two to three weeks which is the demolition of the existing building on the site thank you larry good evening everybody it's exciting to be here as larry mentioned my name is joe costa i'm a principal and architect with perkins eastman from our stanford office uh it's very exciting to be here tonight which because whenever i'm in front of a board at this point in the project it means we're getting close
to construction which is something that we're we've been waiting for for many years and we're very excited about starting construction on this beautiful high school i'm going to be very brief tonight most of you have seen these drawings or have seen presentations in one form or another but this is actually where we are in the project right now this is exactly what's going to be constructed so this part is the actual footprint of the new high school this is knights field as you know exists already and this is a new parking lot and this is the bleachers that um look uh at the fields for street orientation this is broad running north south this is the former um university uh which was actually uh connecting with a lafayette that we're actually going to cut off
and create a little cul-de-sac and down here at the bottom is linden over on this side of the site is the actual seaside park as you know a finger comes way way up and bridgeport harbor is right about here just slightly off the page main entry of the building will be right here in this particular corner all of the students faculty everybody who comes to the building will come to the front door that's a policy of the of the district as you know and then free to circulate within the building there is a bus drop-off and pick-off area on the west side of the site it's a double lane separated by a fence so students are able to come into the main building from that from a sidewalk there is a service area at the
back of the site with some parking as i mentioned the cul-de-sac is right here um pretty straightforward i mean if you've been to the site bodine hall is was right here it's now gone and the north-south dormitory is also gone you really do have a sense of the drama and the views that the school is going to have uh to the sound and overlooking nice field it's going to be very dramatic beautiful beautiful school setting floor plan this is a drawing actually right from the construction document set i mentioned before the entry is right here under a porch a vestibule coming in here there is a security desk and a principal's office which has eyes on what's going on on broad street as well as who's coming and going in the building main entrances straight
through there is a commons that acts as a breakout area for a large competition gymnasium an auditorium with a sloped floor and platform on this side and a cafeteria space here so all of these three big rooms are really fed off of this commons area which is going to have a view out to the south overlooking the parking area as well as the ball field and then views even further out to the to the sound kitchen is back here serving the cafeteria back here are some special spaces including a fitness room there is um spaces for tech uh offices i i meant you mentioned the aviation space that's going to be right here there's some tech mechanical technology there's mechanical spaces back there all of the lockers and toilets and all sort of the back
back service area associated with physical education is located in this block as i mentioned there is a big view to the south and there's some nice windows that overlook those those spaces [Music] uh floor plan is a very simple l-shaped floor plan and you'll see this floor plan repeated on the upper floors these are some additional special spaces like drafting and graphic arts and things like that over here is student support spaces along with some additional classrooms the one of the most prominent spaces in the building is the media center which is on the corner and actually has views to the harbor as well as to the south overlooking the parking and the um and the play area the the ball field very nice very nice layout very simple next floor is mostly classrooms there
are there are a cluster of science rooms as well as on each floor there is an administrative space sort of keeping an eye on students and this is a very straightforward row of classrooms strung along the perimeter on both sides very simple floor plan there's three three stairs per floor and a couple of elevators as well bathrooms are scattered around the uh around each floor plate uh being convenient to both students and faculty upper floor again very similar floor design basically repeated on this level the roof does have access by a elevator for convenience and mechanical systems are mostly organized on the roof perspective view this is a view looking at the main entry right here so everyone will be coming from there's the bus drop off or the parking area coming to this plaza
area as you can see there is a promenade that used to be universities now turned into a walking space with trees and greenery there is the the main commons area in the cafeteria on this level the um the space i mentioned which is the media center or the library is perched right here so you get these fantastic views in both direction and then the upper floors are all classrooms it gives you a little perspective a little flavor of what the building is going to look like it's going to be a very timeless very handsome building uh good durable materials and again it's that this that view to the south and to the harbor which is something that we're really taking advantage of in the design it's going to be a great place to learn great
place to to do projects great place to grow up and that's that's our presentation be here and you know i was part of the media i'm a part of the building committee thank you for the presentation but i'm going to say this for the record i know you show um if you can go to the second or first not second page because i know you tell me about maybe the parent center you know because i know i want to be that for the record to be sure i know you cannot say parent room because that's the policy the rules of the state i understand that but the state had to understand that with our parents we don't have more education we don't handle school with our staff and not even i know it's a policy
and i'm gonna say you run but when the state say that oh is that can be parents room because they're not gonna approve it the state have to understand without parent is not is no school but i respect that it's not coming from you but i nobody had to call parent center like we have in a basket high school you would show me maybe it's going to be the first floor around i mean yeah around there right it's right there okay that's good for the specs yeah prominent location right next to the front door so it's easy to get no it's fine close to the door close to the security for me and my second question is um how big is the room the classroom for this for the students how big is to be
sure how many kids they're supposed to be in the room the the each classroom is designed in accordance with the ed specs i don't remember the exact number of is it 28 kids uh 29 29 per room and you go to the microphone so it can be i can listen to you it's 29 students per room is what the room is designed to in accordance with the specs okay and my last question i know you said saw me the second floor if you can go to the second floor i'm not i'm not why are we exiting out of the presentation not doing it oh no he's not him somebody else is doing it okay sorry there you go okay second floor i know the house the height of the safety for the second floor remember
ask that in my committee there's there's extra height railing okay from the first floor to the second floor we're very sensitive about okay taking that yeah all right yep thank you so much one more question for now um mr sir kelvik and then you mr macro yeah i got a couple of questions um vmas supposed first people in high school was the firstborn military academy space still going to be in the building yes yes did they have like a whole separate separate area or somewhere similar to how we house central magnet it'll be accommodated in the building like we do at the for years there so second question if the resiliency project never gets off the off the ground how protected are we from floods we're raising the grades up to the first floor elevation
will be 18 feet which is 200 feet is 2 feet above the height of the 500 deer floodplain thank you and um final question uh there's a lot of discussion about the boilers when i was on the school uh support committee what kind of heating are we gonna have are we still considering the you call it so we we decided to install our boilers um if things go as planned with the discussion uh with new power they will put their equipment in front of our boilers so with easy shutoffs we'll be able to shut it shut off their uh supply and fire up our boilers yes immediately so we did not want to roll the dice and not have the backup of our own boilers and have to risk not having school in case things
did not work out properly does that reduce any of our square footage available square footage for the school or any cause any issues we gave them the calculations which our engineer has done for the heat load and possibly the future if they want to go that way for the cooling mode thank you mr macron yeah i was just looking at the project costs um and uh initially the budget estimate turn michael i'm sorry i was looking at the project cost and initially the budget estimate had about a 6.5 percent construct i'm sorry um construction contingency now as i look at the construction documents that construction contingent contingency of the total uh budget is now 3.5 million dollars or like 2.7 percent do we have any any reason to be concerned about that uh decline in
the construction contingency based on what we're seeing in the documents no again we have to go to bid the budget was what we presented to the state when they raised the budget or the grant to cover the 129 million previously it was 115 million so we had to go back to the legislature to get more funding which we have and we've done it the trade cost has gone up and that's through the main construction again right now the market is a little crazy we have to go to bed and see where we're at but right now we're comfortable with the contingency costs the maximum you can carry is five percent anything about five percent the state will not reimburse you on okay any other questions um i had a question about the parking lot how
many spots are going to be available in the parking lot do you know 129 right 166 parking spaces that's a good amount um does it does the parking lot belong to basic high school will it be shared with the university of bridgeport in any capacity for sporting events i don't know there has been a couple of discussions with myself the president of the university about the possibility of them utilizing um maybe 75 spots because we may not have a need on a daily basis for that so her and i have had some conversations about it because they've expressed some concern about the loss of parking yeah and the hopes of increased enrollment at the university of commuters but i told her we'll be able to work that out when the um that was it that
was my only question about parking i will say i used to work for the university of bridgeport mr macaron does still and parking is like a situation down there so i'm happy to see some parking being introduced to the area but i was curious to see sort of how that was going to be worked out because it's you know that's the prime real estate right there having 160 some odd parking spots added to the um that area so i think they're also exploring some other options and properties in the nearby vicinity to create more parking for their uh students and faculty yeah good thank you yes go ahead all right mr manahan thank you so much i have a good question um first question is how many more classroom world this building had that the
