okay this is a call to order of the first regular meeting for may 2022 if someone online has their mic on would you please mute it okay i'm not hearing anyone please they mute the meaning well we're supposed to mute your mic but can you hear now yes i can't hear now but the media wasn't mute thank you okay albert benahan president erica castillo michael macaron president joseph sokolovic okay let's stand for pledge of allegiance i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all next up are student representative reports there's none present in the room is there anyone online yeah would you state your name in your school my name is latonya ferguson

and i'm the central high school representative um i'd like to report that there's really only two things going on um last week as we all know was speaker's appreciation and what really happened was that a lot of students were really recognizing teachers and really speaking out to them about you know how much they're appreciated and things like that and then you have a lot of eight because um so thank you okay thank you are there any others the chair mr bennett yes i i don't know but i say um for the student i have a point of privilege am i what is it foreign privilege is um i'd like to if it's possible to get a silence for a student they went to harding high school passed away this weekend he got away for 2017.

his name is thomas asbury um he was my nephew nephew tommy boyle he was a great student in putting high school it's possible to make it silent for a minute for him for his family piece okay we'll do that when we finish student representative reports okay are there any other student representatives uh yeah my name is michael hemmings i'm from i.t at fairchild wheeler okay um this week thursday's supposed to be our senior prom and um they will start finals sometime after that and also for the juniors we have an upcoming field trip where we go to see a national history building and uh about where it was but yeah that's what i have okay thank you and the others see annie okay all right at mr benihan's request we'll observe a moment of silence

for the graduate who passed away over the weekend okay thank you thank you everyone next is public comment we have three people signed up the first one is carolyn b now is the your microphone good evening my name is carol and i'm a resident of the city of bridgeport and have been for the last 50 years i'm here uh to clear my name at first i'd like to introduce myself you know me as carol and nama let me give you a little bit about who i am little bit about who i am i retired from the federal government for 25 years i worked 25 years in defense contract administration as a contract administrator so i do understand contracts i worked 25 years and never missed a day and i was young enough to do something

else when they bought me out at that time the department of defense was having a budget crisis and if you had 20 years or more they would buy you out so i took the buyout and i was still young enough to do something else so i started my own business i was the first african-american female bail bond person in the united states i still hold a license state of connecticut insurance department i also hold a license the state of canada department diverse and diversity training i have my own company and i've been the company that i'm with now international fidelity insurance i've been wondering for 30 years and i've managed millions of dollars and never cheated them out of a dime so why is this important it is important to me because uh mr joe

selogovich i may not be able to pronounce your name correctly but i'm here to build a bridge and not offense if there's anything that's miscommunication someone told him that i call him a racist i do not know him to do that my job is to get away deal get away with racism to bridge the community we're americans and we were sitting here talking just before the meeting was called to order i love this country too much to see the division that's in this country whether it's black white hispanic gay straight or whatever it is we are all god's people and we need to learn how to get along so at my age i am not trying to wage no war with anybody so mrs colossa i'm here to apologize to you in person if anyone

told you that it is simply not true and even if someone said it to you and irritated you i'd like to apologize from caroline my reputation mean a lot to me i tell my son every day other than your soul salvation your health and your peace of mind and your reputation it's the only thing you can take with you to the next life and it means everything to me so i don't want anyone tampering with that i've come too far i'm a graduate of the university of british with a master's degree in education undergraduate degree in health and human services new hampshire college and a doctoral degree in theology as well you know so i have all the action i'm a small business and richard with the small business office of the city of bridgewater

in the state of connecticut as a small business minority owned woman the only thing i was trying to do i was not trying to get a contract i was trying to come before your body to explain to you that if you needed diversity to train in my company as a minority owned businesswoman i could provide that i do understand the concept of contracts you are not in the position to give me a contract i understand that so there was a miscommunication there so i want to bridge the gap between us and establish a friendship i don't want war with anybody i just lost my husband and i understand the importance of love i understand the importance of saying i'm sorry the important i've always understood it but it hit home when i lost my best

friend i've traveled the world i've seen a lot i've been a lot of places but i love this country i was just telling the superintendent when i got back to america i came back from turkey and you know i've been to the vatican but when those squeals hit the ground at kennedy airport and say welcome to america i was the first one off the plane so i'm not trying to create a chaos in any situation i am a minority owned businesswoman and i have the capability and the qualification and the dignification to do whatever this uh city of bridgeport like i see bobby brown sitting there and she would tell you the first time she left richmond was not took 35 kids to cincinnati ohio she is my protege now whether she she she may

tell you that and i took them so they could get an outlook outside of bridgeport to see and she moved on from there to becoming a state conference president nw she didn't even know how to pronounce the naacp when i met she was in ncpa but i'm proud of her today when she was elected to this board she came to me to go over the robber rules of order with her isn't that correct bobby so i have never been a person that's third controversy now will i fight the system yes i will i just told your superintendent because of shortage of money in bridgeport we didn't get the fund i will go to harford myself now i will be at the convention that test toast tomorrow night and i'm going to ask him for permission

for me to go there and fight for our children i love this community and i know what it takes to be a leader i know what it takes to mold and make a leader so i'm here tonight to just say all of that let's put the nonsense behind us we'll both groan folks and move forward we are americans together we stand divided we fall are there any questions if not thank you very much for listening to me [Music] good evening distinguished board my name is reverend dr herron gaston i'm here in the capacity as a pastor in this community i have the illustrious opportunity to pass the summerfield united methodist church here in the city of bridgeport i am one of the large involved in one of the largest protestant denominations in this country the

united methodist church which is also one of the most diverse institutions in this country by way of a protestant denomination i say all that to say that diversity and inclusion is something that's critically important to me and reverend carolyn na also is a part of my congregation in terms of being a board member and i would not have selected such a person to be a board member at my church if those persons held a deeply held belief that was discriminatory and prejudicial towards any group of individuals and i can attest as a pastor of that church that carolyn now cares very deeply about the city of bridgeport its students the board of education and the upliftment of the community and so i'm not sure if individuals have cast aspersions on her good name but the

bible does let me know uh that a good name is better than uh any riches or silver and gold and i want to ensure that uh you all get a good uh understanding of who this person is and so i'm here just as a character reference for her it's very hurtful and demeaning for someone to be accusing her of being a racist or bigot and she's been a foot soldier for justice in this community for a very long time having been one of the first african-american women at the helm of leadership in the naacp and under her tutelage at that time really help to fight for students and to fight for education and to ensure that our kids have a decent shot at educational opportunity whether it's going to college or whether it's going to

pursue a vocation so i do ask that um you all take seriously uh my character reference as it relates to uh carolyn nach and i understand that america is not a melting pot but it is a salad bowl uh each of us have our own special ingredients by which we are able to contribute to that and i think that diversity is what makes us strong and so this is not a black america white america pink america or green america we're the united states of america and we have to work together for the greater good of bridgeport and for our kids thank you thank you third party is marge hiller good evening everyone my name is mark hiller i live here in bridgeport i'm here tonight as a representative of the central high school school governance

committee council one of the actions that we are doing this year is starting and revitalizing the scholarship fund that has been in existence at the high school for many years it is kind of languished and we're one of our goals of this of the council is to replenish the amount of money that is there so that we can give scholarships to the students who are graduating this year we have decided that we are our goal is twenty thousand dollars this year and we hope to grow it to even more and we anticipate giving out at least two thirds of that amount of money this spring during awards ceremony and our grants will range from anywhere from two hundred and fifty dollars to a thousand dollars so i've given you all a copy of the letter

and the flyer i've put posters out and i hope that you will take the posters and distribute them in your schools and then you will each all make a contribution to the fund thank you that concludes public comment next on the agenda is approval of minutes we only have one set of minutes to approve the last meeting april 25th 2022 regular public meeting is there a motion by ms allen is there a second second second by ms brown is there any discussion or edits okay all in favor aye any opposed any abstentions i'm going to dispense with the chairman's report go to committee reports referrals first is ad hoc district right branding initiative ms brown oh before we continue i'd like to note that uh since we called the role ms allen has joined the

we'll just move on to letter d discussion possible approval bridgeport public schools debate league field trip to the edward m kennedy institute for the united states senate in boston massachusetts mr rauner peace is here mr rupees is here good evening everyone this is a trip that we uh planned a couple years back but covet of course um kind of ruined all those plans but we started going there a couple years ago uh this was given to us actually by a gentleman who is a graduate of central high school and he contacted the superintendent at the time of mr benowitz and told us about this trip but basically what it is it's a senate module the students will go to the edward m kennedy institute and this was built after the senator died by his uh

his staff and they have this beautiful senate module just like the u.s senate and each student will be given a state and a party so one of the students will be a republican senator from mississippi someone will be a democratic senator from ohio the uh topic this year is going to be voting rights and um they'll go through the the whole program it's it's pretty much uh a three-hour program and uh the jfk library is also on the same campus so and that's actually free admission and the students will be going to that ad okay anyone have any questions were you able to provide to the superintendent sorry maybe acknowledge the next question were you able to provide to the superintendent's office yes executed um permission slips yes i did okay you don't have it

available in our packet what did you say we don't have uh all executed permission slips in our packet they're still fully executed the permission slips were handed in i believe you asked for the student information log which i did send to the superintendent i have it here if you'd like to see it i separated them by school so this one for each school is there anything else i got it [Applause] a question is this content different from what's printed in our packet or this is that i printed that off of the packet okay no it's just on friday there's one permission slip that's in my face in the packet that's not signed by a parent or guardian so i want to make sure this is a fantastic trip love it i looked it up it

was brought to my committee i think it's an awesome opportunity i just want to make sure that all permission slips are signed and executed before any student leaves the state okay confidentiality but by saying the student's name yeah actually the initials lf okay can you mention the school that gives it away too okay that's right can you just give it to him yeah would you retrieve it from here okay all right is there a motion to approve this field trip as presented by mr apiece some move second moved by mr bennett second by ms allen all in favor hi hi hi going here she's going to represent all three troops we all set with this all set yeah you're all okay good thank you so much as long as you comply with the other one

parents my name is caroline reed and i'm thrilled for the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the mission of today's students tomorrow's teachers as the new regional program manager here in bridgeport psdt has been established for over 25 years by dr betty our mission is to recruit train and mentor students from middle and high schools throughout college and place them as effective teachers and committed leaders who will strengthen their communities and schools our vision is to address the teachers shortage and to increase the number of culturally diverse educators our hope is that this module will be replicated and recognized for addressing teacher shortage uh throughout the united states the criteria for student selection is students should have leadership potential students are recommended by administrators teachers and guidance counselors students with the ability to achieve

and maintain a b plus average by the end of their senior year and students must be passionate and committed to the education omen is at a 41 with an additional 26 students on a waitlist tstt program is supported and funded by peter and carmen lucia buck and fearful community center foundation today's students tomorrow's teachers is honored and grateful for their continued support pst partners with several colleges and universities fordham university george mason university iona college manhattan college university of connecticut mercy college queens college and we're currently working on a partnership with sacred heart university and their residency program now let me share about our annual recognition event brunch which will be held on thursday may 26 from 10 a.m to 12 p.m at this event we will honor and celebrate our graduating seniors for first-year

we would grow our own um who would enter in and take advantage of the reduced tuition and the opportunity to graduate that's from sacred heart university and come back to teach in bridgeport initially obviously to get that off the ground we were recruiting current sacred heart university students i think the partnership that is being developed between today's student tomorrow's teacher is the missing link that will link the opportunity and the residency program with the students that attend bridgeport public schools to make that transition from bridgeport public school student to sen sacred heart student to bridgeport teacher seamless so i thank miss reed and the work she's doing with today's student tomorrow so are there any questions about the program that ms reed can answer or about um the logistics of it that maybe mr tastani

can answer no that's my question as uh central just dropped on us now we got all the documentation and backups similar to harding just want to answer yes the only thing we asked central to do was to update um it they had white plains new york it's on white plains road and terry county new york okay other than that yes thank you all right is there a motion to approve the central and harding field trip to today's students tomorrow's teachers recognition event moved by mr bennett is there a second second third okay find this bad place all in favor all right motion carries okay this is a nice event i hope everyone enjoys it thank you ms reed is there a motion to adjourn mood time is that passport you're second by ms allen all
