that we are six members of the Board of Ed um and I think it would be it's appropriate that we take a second and just um acknowledge that u pa harani resigned from the board a few weeks ago um for personal reasons and she will be a Miss member she's very valued um wise measured uh she valued common sense and um enjoyed a good laugh I would say so Hala you're probably not watching but if you are we miss you anyway with that um let's get to the really fun stuff um I understand that we're starting with recognizing um the following teachers of the year so I'm gonna begin with Brookfield High School and the teacher of the year is conso so we ask you to come down line and Shake our hand to shake
yours next from WMS the teacher of the year is ingred paraly and for CES the teacher of the year is Judy [Applause] sanbor congatulations and Dr Bru uh I think there's something you'd like to add there I want to let everybody know that the teacher of the year for the district for Brookfield Public Schools is Judy sorg congratulations and also just a special note um just the way it happened this year all of our um uh teachers of the Year from various schools are in special education department and um some of them actually even started as par Educators with us and made it into the teacher ranks getting their certification and we're just so excited to have them stay with us uh talk about Recruitment and Retention and just wonderful people and we're just so
happy for all of them and uh it's nice to see their family still get introduced to them so congratulations [Applause] everybody so we know that it takes a lot lot of talented Personnel to U make a district operate um so the board would also like to recognize the following staff members of the year um and if you're here uh you please come on down and and and get a handshake let us shake your hand that'd be awesome so for BHS it's Jen jolio for WMS it's Karina chelo for C it's Sandy plum and for the town offices it's Karen Olsen [Applause] all right so now I think we're going to ask um Mr blenda to come up and give us a hand good evening it is my pleasure this evening to introduce the top 10
students of the graduating class of 2024 I'm going to call them up individually one by one I'm going to ask that when they come up look at the deep breaths you're you're all right got it it's okay you're going to come up one by one introduce yourself say your name uh and tell the board and the community where you plan on going to school next year uh and then if the board has any questions they'd like to ask they certainly could ask questions um and so we'll start in no particular order uh with rishik gorset hi my name my name is Rich gory shett and I plan on going to Cornell University next [Applause] year sure I'll start where do you see yourself in the next five years um hopefully alive and well um I'm
hoping I'll have like I I want to start my own business or something like that so I think in five years probably have some sort of job or something like that and then after that I'll try to learn the thing that I'm going into and then after that make my business so [Applause] yeah good evening what's one thing that you think you learned from Brookfield High School that is most prepared you for that career path that you just chose or too or T I don't know um I think I want to go in like the tech field or something like that I did uh the robotics team and I took like classes like computer science and like higher level math classes in high school and those have definitely like prepared me because I feel like
from robotics I get like the pressure of being on the field and stuff like that and then obviously I learned like the knowledge from those classes that I took [Applause] thank you rishik uh I'll add that when I ask you to come up and say your name in school also if you have a major that you plan on um because we have to kind of guess what Rik was Tech right okay so up next will be Eric puso I'm Eric puso I plan on going to Sunni ston Brook University and I'm majoring in chemical engineering so I have a question um now I don't know your eating habits but if you were going to uh point out one thing in the calf that you really really like what would it be uh I think the
new sandwiches they made recently are pretty nice yeah could you be descriptive please so recently they opened up a sandwich bar to the side of the cafeteria and there's a lot of options there and I like the variet Au um is it not what do you think is your greatest nonacademic lesson that you've learned in your time in Brookfield I feel like my greatest nonacademic lesson would just be perseverance uh being able to get through stuff even when it's hard and focusing my own time on what I value in my life rather than than just focusing solely on [Applause] academics we're going to go probably two two questions yes the sandwich bar is something that has newly opened this year pre-co it had been a pretty popular thing and then after Co it was very
difficult to reopen it with Staffing so they just opened that the spring so I get it Eric I hear you uh up next is Fatima Abdul Ramen hello my name is FAA Abdul Rahman and I'm going to seen Hall University next year my major will be biology as part of the school's bsmd program [Applause] hi hello congratulations thank you so what is one thing that you think you will look back on and miss most about Brookfield High School in your experience here I think I really miss the fact that we had a smaller class size and that's because I got to develop so many close relationships with so many of my peers and I see so many of them today and I just really know that I'm going to miss all of them so I
really I was just wonder what you're planning on doing with your biology degree oh so I hope to go into the field of medicine um the fields I'm most interested in are Cardiology and Orthopedics so hopefully I can find a career one of [Applause] those all right three Downs seven to go up next is shria joha hi everyone my name is sh Dona and I will be attending Boston University next fall and I'll be majoring in computer science with the minor in biology and Entrepreneurship so what is the definition of success for you I think success is about you know doing what you enjoy but also in return doing something that helps other people um I think when we think of su we always think about like personal benefit but I think like when I
grow older with whatever income I make um my mom and like my family have always taught me to like not only like keep some of that for yourself but also to give it to other people so I think when you're older if you're in a position to do well for yourself and you're also giving back to community and you're helping other people out I think that's the true definition of success that was very well said you had mentioned entrepreneurship right how would you define an entrepreneur um an entrepreneur is someone that takes initiative and going back to like being in bfu high school I think initiative is very rewarded especially at like a young age you know being the first person to speak in a class being the first person to um like go in
a group of people and speak I think that's what makes like taking initiative and being the first person to do something that's what that's what makes you an entrepreneur and that's what I hope to do up next I promise it's going to be okay Bella she a little nervous I can see the face the definition of success really got her oh no what's my question going to be but up next is Isabella Ortiz hold me out there um so I'm Ella Ortiz um I'm going to North Eastern University and I have a combined major in biology and Mathematics with a minor in piano performance so I got to see you um on Monday evening um be um celebrated for some scholarships and awards that you had won and uh you and the group with whom
you were sitting had a like a kinetic energy about you my question for you is when you need to decompress or regroup or have a quiet moment for yourself here in Brookfield I mean in in the building where do you go that's actually a really good question I I find that I'm around people a lot of the time um um there's actually my I is Mr law Mr Lola um and he has this like back hallway that like during I me and um a couple of my peers in in that room will go into um I'm pretty sure the floors are heated or something but it's really nice to just sit in there um like I'm around my friends for so much of my day like I think I have a friend in every single
class um and just kind of during I going back and there we have to talk we can just sit there um doing work or on our phones or just honestly lay down um and it's really nice especially because Mr Law's room is so comfortable it's really nice to just kind of sit there and have like a quiet 30 minutes before I have to go to my next class okay what advice would you give to us as a board as we strive to make the educational experience here in Brookfield better words what can we improve on um well I'm not too familiar with what like most of your guys' jobs are but um if I'm being honest um really anything about your time okay um I would if I'm being completely honest I would say ensuring
that students are um really learning um like kind of to their true potential in classes um I find a lot of times um um not necessarily nobody's fault but a lot of times um students can fall behind or they may feel like they're not really learning the material that they're supposed to be learning um whether that be El lative homework or certain assignments or just not being given the opportunities to um improve themselves if they're struggling um I know some of us have experienced that this year um we're all taking a lot of really hard classes and some seem to have a little more support than others um and I think kind of reaching out to students and being able to look at statistics and surveys and things like that to really see how the
students feel about how they're learning um would be really beneficial thank you Bella up next is Abigail [Applause] Mom hello um my name is Abby Mone and I will be attending Northeastern University um I'm going to major in biology the pr medic track and hopefully Min are in Spanish Hi congratulations thank you so what personal quality are you hoping your college roommate has so me and my roommate actually already talked a little bit um the biggest thing that we're looking forward to is going on little um Cafe visits in Boston um I'm a big fan not of coffee I like hot chocolate um but I'm really exed like explore and make the most of my time um So based on what I I know of her so far um I think she'll share that desire
to explore and learn more and Rel most of our experience in [Applause] Boston a little bit different if you could go back and do anything differently over the course of these past four years either in school or outside of school what would it be um I think especially in my younger years I was a lot more reserved um I struggle a lot with anxiety so I got very stressed with um talking to people I didn't know or you know I felt like I had to be like the perfect student um and I think throughout my time I was able to um make friends with people who really pushed me to be like fully myself and expand my um my friend group and things like that so I think I were able to go back I
would start trying to be more open a little bit earlier so I all right two more to go up next is Ashna [Applause] Gat uh hi my name is Aswad and I'm attending Yukon in the fall and I'm majoring in bial can you recall when you stepped out of your comfort zone and experience personal growth that's there's too many moments um like AB was I not exactly the most social person so I think it's kind of an interesting like talk to like my peers and like try to make friends that I usually wouldn't like just with people I usually wouldn't talk to I think I've experienced that in a lot of classes this year because not like we have like a lot of General classes we always have to take and some of those I
didn't really have friends but I was able to make them and I think that was really [Applause] important I'll keep mind simple if there was one thing you can add to your high school to this high school that would a learning experience that you would want um other students to experience what would it be I think more Hands-On experiences really fun I know last year I took AB bio and we got a dissect the pig which isn't everyone's thing but it was pretty fun as we were able to kind of just like explore like the anatomy Pig and like understand how it works I think more Hands-On experiences would be beneficial to kind of like understand different topics and I think it is something our bun should experience because it's learning in a different way
which is kind of hard to do sometimes all right to be clear we have one left in this row and then two in the second row I don't think I didn't see the two of you behind there I know you're there up next is Dia GIS Kumar hi my name is Dia um I'm gonna be attending UC Berkeley uh majoring in bio engineering and business in the U management entrepreneurship and technology so there seems to be a a theme Here With Biology being like the track right on you guys um are you originally from California yes I am yes okay um when you get out to Berkeley and if you run into any cynics who disparage the East Coast or New England um what can you say about your time in Brookfield to let them
know that it's not as bad as they think yeah sure um well what's interesting is I actually came from like a pretty large subur um in California and moved here and bfield was a CH know it's very small but I do think like there are advantages to being in a really tight-knit Community one being that like you know you know everyone essentially like um as a result you know you build like fa mentioned like really close connections with all your commies um so yeah I guess yeah that's really what I would say all right I have an easy question what are you looking forward to most in college um yes I question but it's interesting I'll repeat but um essentially like just the autonomy and the independence um you know I I really believe in
the statement that like rules are made for those who really need it um so you know in college I guess like there's a lot more independenc when it comes to like really choosing you know um pursuing things that really interest you and uh really as like as a result in you know having all these opportunities around you I guess College really um forces you to find yourself and like figure out um what your true desires are and so I'm really looking forward to that all right up next is AA [Applause] wasth hi my name is AA wouth and I'm attending Yukon to study mechanical engineering with a concentration in Aerospace [Applause] hi it was me so what is one thing that you would look back at your freshman self and sort of give some guiding
advice to how they could begin their Journey at I would tell her just find the right circle of friends like I think I I really surrounded myself with people who wanted what's best for me and my family definitely wanted what's best for me so finding the appro people to surround yourself with and push you to be your best self is very important I was just wondering how you feel that softball has prepared you for college and then in many many ways shout out to Coach Lane um softball's definitely helped me like persevere through many challenges um overcome a lot of fail year I've had to run run a lot of hills on that Hill back there wasn't very fun um but but it over overall helping like overcome challenges and do the hard things that
you need to do to succeed and work with the team it wasn't stubbing you Catherine I'm just was GNA you were the first to answer the questions in the classroom I figured I'd make you last answer questions I there it was not my promise but uh last we have Katherine Sosi hi everyone my name is Katherine sloi I'm also going to Yukon in the fall and I'm not a woman in stem so unfortunately I'm studying political science Katherine so you're an excellent athlete and you're involved in so much so how do you balance academic demands extracurricular activities and personal responsibilities during High School um so I really like to run on a schedule so I'm the type of person who always needs to be doing something because I really appreciate the sense of the productivity
um so I see my involvement in extracurriculars as a way of as a way for me to involve myself in a bunch of different types of communities so the types of people that are in all the groups and extracurriculars that I'm in are all different and I like to hear their opinions and be able to voice them to other groups and kind of just feel the community at Brookfield um that's pretty much why I involve myself a lot also for the college resume very well said what is your most memorable moment from your high school years most memorable moment God guys um my most memorable moment I would say I played basketball and my most memorable moment was surprisingly my covid year my freshman year um I really enjoyed the group of seniors that was
on the basketball team and I they worked really really hard to despite all of the hardships that everyone had to go through through Co they worked really really hard to include all of the freshmen and I really appreciate um how they worked to create sense of belonging and that kind of made me strive as a senior Captain this year to um also give that sense of belonging to the Freshman as well I think the combination of confidence and humility that you guys display is something that could be a lesson for all of us here um your accomplishments do credit to your teachers and to your families but to yourselves so get out there and crush it that um you guys your evening is free if you and your families want to skidadle and like have
some calm um this is this is the time we'll take a couple of minutes thank you so much for coming like turn go ahead AE resp not okay so uh we're going to move to the next item on the agenda which is our student representative report um and maybe if you guys still have some awesome questions and it's just us now just the family around the table you could ask Eva and give her a chance to share some of her insights as a remarkable BHS student thank you and yeah feel free to ask any questions okay so some current events we have going on May 24th was senior prom at the Waterview it was a great night everyone had a lot of fun next week so from the 10th through 13th is finals for seniors
and then after those are over it goes into finals for underclassman it's a different sort of schedule LA on Monday night seniors Juniors and underclassman were recognized at the Brookfield High School ceremony of Excellence so some people receed scholarships academic Awards athletic recognitions and other special Awards the final study n it's called finalize your finals is hosted by student government and members of NHS Spanish Honor Society and other groups that will help tutor students is going to take place tomorrow night from 6:00 to 8 at the high school library so it's for any Brookfield High School student who needs to study for finals the Brookfield Library is also hosting a study night for finals on June 13th so students can either attend to study or attend to tutor as volunteers I have a lot of
Athletics updates for Mr Baldwin tonight at the high school there was a meet the coaches night that was for the incoming e8th graders so all of the different sports at the high school set up booths and the coaches are there as well as usually some senior captains Junior captains so parents had an orientation about the Brookfield Athletics program and the eighth graders got to go around meet the coaches and kind of get a sense of what the Athletics program is like here right now the boys lacrosse team is currently at the state semi-finals um Mr Baldwin just emailed me and said 29 minutes ago we were losing two to one so I don't know how it's going now now it's us or oh them okay yeah that was fast um so hopefully that goes well
tonight um congratulations to Olivia Walters she won the Class M state championship for the fourth year in a row ol is going to compete at the University of New Hampshire on Saturday at the New England Championship on Monday 25 student athletes were honored at the awards night like I was talking about before the scholarships awarded to athletes were all funded by Devon scandin she's the owner of Chick-fil-A and Brookfield very generous scholarship so we have a lot of thanks for her on May 26th 26 female student athletes attended the women in leadership conference at the Connecticut Association of schools Ava wouth presented the to the Connecticut Association of schools last week as a part of the CIA equality board on changes that should be recommended to all Connecticut schools she's going to meet with Dr
man Dr Mr Baldwin and Mr Banda to discuss what she learned on the state committee and how we at Brookfield High School can help make the school better and give us recommendations about the Athletics program Vanessa Greenstein also presented to the Connecticut Association of schools as a member of the CIA athletic advisory state board she's also going to meet with Dr man Mr Baldwin and Mr Banda to discuss what she learned on the state committee and how we can make birfield High School better any the other recommendations for the athletic program I have a small update for Voice for change which I just wanted to include because I know it's my last meeting for this school year um again this is on behalf of Vanessa Greenstein she told me that construction has started on the
benches and right now the multilingual signs the process of being put up so construction has started with everything it's on a good track finally a couple things going on with some clubs I'm in for the end of the year um National Honor Society all the new members were inducted in May so we have a blood drive being held on June 18th at the Congregational Church of Brookfield so the new blood drive coordinators for the year will be in charge of that one and the newly inducted members went on the new Member Retreat at the YMCA for some team building and team bonding activities last week for Spanish Honor Society new members for both Spanish Honor Society and French Honor Society were inducted on May 30th we've also been working on some end ofe things we're
helping out by volunteering at the final study nights to provide support for students who are either English language Learners who need to study for fin finals or students who need to study for language classes and I've got some updates just for seniors we have graduation on June 15th we're receiving our caps and gowns tomorrow at ilts when they're going to be distributed the graduation rehearsal and walk are coming up at the end of next week just in preparation for graduation that weekend and there's a lot of end of Year celebrations Reflections goodbyes a lot going on in school that's all I have but as I finish up my last word of Ed report for this school year I want to say I've really enjoyed holding this position I'm honored that I've been able to to
share about the life of Brookfield students and kind of give you guys a sense of what's going on in the schools it's been really rewarding and fun so thank you so much for the past year and have a great night if there's any questions I can totally answer where do you see yourself in five years in five years it's a little weird to imagine myself in five years but um I will be attending Clemson University in the fall I know I'm going to do a four-year degree I plan on after that probably doing grad school I'm going to be majoring in business I haven't yet decided exactly what discipline of business I'm going to do but I do think that a graduate degree either an MBA or a degree in some sort of Technology degree
is something that I want to be pursuing oh I didn't have a question I just wanted to say you did an outstanding job and I think whatever it is you choose whatever path you go on you're going to be successful so great job thank you you are involved in so many amazing things with high school do you have something that has stood out for you like an experience in one of your clubs or actal activities that kind of informed who you are as a person yeah definitely yeah this definitely sticks out to me I would say besides this um I from my sophomore year to my senior year was on the dance team at the high school and that has always stuck out to me um it's been a really really rewarding experience just to
have a group of girls that so tight-knit always there for each other whether it's about dance or about anything else going on in our lives um it really gave me a sense of belonging and showed me the importance of working with other people especially when you're reaching for a goal it's been really great just to grow with those people um through our winds and losses and I truly had a great time on that team sure okay who are you going to miss the most so I want you to think about not just BHS but your time in Brook Field teachers staff who's that person that immediately comes to mind the person that immediately comes to mind is my ilt teacher Mrs liebler um so IL I'm sure you guys know it's the same for all
four years same students for all four years so my I we just had today since the capping down distribution is tomorrow and we're not sure if everyone's going to be at school on Friday um was like our last it was our our last I together so we had a little celebration end of year party um we always call ourselves we like a little second family for each other in that room cuz that's every single day you get to know those people everything that's going on in their lives so Mrs Le has truly been such an important figure in my life like a mentor um just someone who I can feel like I can talk to about anything all the trials and tribulations going on in my life um so just having her there for constant
support through academics anything happening in my life um I will definitely miss her great um I have a quick question yeah so we we've talked about how you've done this position so very very well um quick tips for for all the Juniors who are watching at home who want to have your right um who want to have your job next year um even if they're personality isn't quite like yours um what do you think it takes to do your job here well I think that doing this role requires the skill of public speaking which is one of the most important things that anyone can ever know I grew up um being in 4 I've been in it for the past 10 years so through that I've done public speaking at the county level and at
the state level every single year and it's kind of just being confident in yourself and being comfortable enough to speak in front of a group of people even if it's people you don't really know um you just kind of have to be able to connect with your audience and definitely a lot of preparation is required for this so meeting with the right people I would meet with Mr Baldwin because some of the athletic things I would never really know if it wasn't um for my meetings with him but yeah I think it's definitely requires a lot of confidence and speaking in front of people is a scary thing so bravery too but you just need to trust yourself that you can do it thank you AA the board has a present for you and Dr
Young Blood is bringing it over and I just want to say on behalf of the board and Casey and Anna and myself we couldn't be more in Mr Banda and Mr baldon for all the reporting they do with you um we are just so proud of you and your en energy your smile and your maturity uh you made us even though you're the student at the table many times feel like we belong and so thank you did a great job this year really proud of you congratulations thank you so much thanks AA thanks AA great night see you soon okay um before we proceed to our next item um I've reviewed our agenda uh for this evening's meeting and believe it's necessary to refine um our agenda items that we've proposed for discussion in executive
session to provide clarification because this is a regular meeting of the board uh the Freedom of Information Act permits the board to add items uh to the agenda with the affirmative vote of 2third of the members present and voting so for us as a result or for or more I should say as a result um I proposed that the board add two agenda items to replace the recommended motion under Section um 14 of the agenda yeah to clarify the discussion topics proposed for executive session okay therefore I propose the following motion uh I move that the Board of Ed add the following two agenda items to replace the current agenda item under section 14 of the agenda first discussion of confidential attorney client privileged information regarding the board's role and Authority regarding person Personnel matters
and board policy 1312 second self-evaluation of the board so those are the two items in the motion that I propose to add as an agenda item I will second that motion okay is there any discussion I don't understand because that's what we originally had so what's different about it um what's different is clarifying so um the discussion of confidential attorney client privileged information regarding the board's role uh no so the the information has changed a little bit here regarding the board's role and Authority regarding Personnel matters and board policy 1312 it's just more specific it's just more specific thank you so we're basically just adding Personnel matter uh we're adding the words the board's role and Authority regarding Personnel matters and board policy 1312 but 132 so 1312 is a policy which we can talk
about on the regular agenda don't we have to be more specific with that no because we're not just discussing the policy right we're regarding the board's role and Authority regarding Personnel matters and board policy 1312 so as it relates to policy 1312 yes I think that language should say that as it relates to policy 1312 we're not isn't that the same as and policy 1312 so okay what's the difference between as it relates to an and the way I read it is just we're just discussing the policy but we're not just discussing the policy right we're talking about the the the motion I made is about the board's role and Authority regarding Personnel matters and board policy 1312 I just don't know how that's different than what we did at the last meeting when we
had a public complaint with policy 1312 because we've got we've got attorney client privileged communication about the board's role and Authority regarding Personnel matters and this particular policy yeah the public needs to needs to um not interrupt um so then is there more discussion about this all right all in favor please signify by saying I I all opposed please signify by saying Nay n okay so the motion passes and the agenda items are are added okay so moving next to public comment all right um the board has seen an uptick in unacceptable Behavior at public comment in recent months uh we've given extraordinary latitude to speakers at public comment and we've seen attacks on the people who run and work in our schools we cannot have this we will not have this it is one
to call light to a problem of practice it is another to this merge the character of the Professionals in the district with that and for the people watching at home for whom this information might be new the board wishes to clarify the protocols around meeting conduct so this is policy 9325 a no boisterous or inappropriate or disrespectful conduct shall be permitted at any board or subcommittee meeting persistence in such conduct shall be grounds for summary termination by the chairperson of that person's privilege of address if necessary the chair may clear the room so that the board can continue the meeting to protect the impartiality of the board the board will not hear public comment that involves a complaint about Boe Personnel students a Personnel action a student disciplinary matter or pending litigation regardless of whether
or not the employee or student is identified in the presentation by name or by another reference which tends to identify an individual all charges and complaints addressing these topics shall be submitted to the appropriate personnel consistent with board policy or if no such policy then to the superintendent of schools speakers are asked to express themselves in a civil manner with due respect for the dignity and privacy of others who may be affected by their comments while it is not the board's intent to stifle public comment speakers should be aware that if their St stat Ms violate the rights of others under the law of defamation or invasion of privacy the speaker may be held legally responsible speakers unsure of the legal ramification of what they are about to say are urged to consult first with
their legal adviser remarks at public comment which violate this policy will be called out of order that will be a warning to the speaker to change the tenor or Tac of commentary any further violations will result in the speaker privilege of address and revocation of the speaker's privilege of address as stated in the policy so with that we move to public comment we do welcome public comment and each speaker will have up to three minutes to provide input to the board at the start of each regular meeting a maximum of 20 minutes is allotted for comment on any item included on the agenda for that meeting at the end of the regular meeting time is allotted for comment on any item which is within the board's jurisdiction which would also include overflow time discussion of
school Personnel individual students or individual members of the board is prohibited and with that we call to the podium Mrs Scalera well I didn't have time to talk to my attorney yet but um I conne CT said can you can you please remind us of your address yep Erin scera 5 Jackson Drive CG said is merely a different digital platform of Frontline which the district utilized four years prior to the implementation of that all school districts needed to utilize CT saids in the 2022 23 school year in fact that the people in attendance at the last Board of Ed meeting as well as community members watching at home had to hear false and inaccurate statements regarding CT sets and how and how great it was holding the district accountable and on track was in poor
taste and infuriating to the parents whose children are not getting what they need in order to be successful our report means nothing if the information entered is inaccurate parents have still been forced to file state complaints to request mediation and due process hearings and then if problems can't be rectified they're forced to use they'll find themselves in litigation so I'm here asking you the people who sat silent while misinformation was stated after the special education strategic plan was discussed in depth what exactly has CT saids done to help identified students what has it done for the parents that find themselves at the mercy of the state CT saids did absolutely nothing to ensure a child was getting legally required testing it did nothing to ensure the IEP was filed followed or WR or even delivered
as written or provide meing instruction in fact there's no data that the district has to show this child is making progress yet I have progress reports that were uploaded to the state through CT sets the adequate progress has been made which is misleading and a completely Injustice to a highly capable student how is progress being evaluated or measured when no proper procedures are in place to ensure valid and relevant data is collected some parents have no choice but to stand before you and publicly speak out about these very matters matters because we are forced to listen meeting after meeting that everything is greated and to boot receive a state of the district email stating that everything in the correct review has been properly addressed be honest be transparent and be willing to help the director
you hired to write this ship if everything is awesome then why was a three to fiveyear strategic plan for special education developed I'm well aware that it's needed but but by the God but by the continued Everything is Awesome stance does the administration in the board think everything's awesome next is Mrs K good evening de 21 Drive I am the person that filed the 1312 complaint that I was told would be reviewed during exe executive session after this regularly scheduled Boe meeting I'm coming up to the board to speak on this agenda item solely for record and for it to be known and transparent one today when I reviewed the agenda online it was not properly noted in the agenda only the policy number in reference not the title public complaint or even the matter
of the complaint and yes you can do that with autonity sadly I'm forced to stand up here and be my child advocate so sadly I am not afforded that same opportunity I'm trying to write this ship two I wrote in to inform the board that I was available for questions in executive meeting and I was informed by a representative of the board that I cannot they cannot speak with me for clarification or for any questions that they may have and that is completely false and misleading to the entirety of the rest of the board because I can it is well within the right for the board to invite me in by way of vote the way it is for anyone else when I ask to please show the policy that states I cannot be questioned
or even asked invited in I receive no correspondence back again I want it noted for the record that preemptively I am not feeling confident that behind closed doors in executive session my complaint will be resolved with Fidelity and care if this illegal information is what is communicated publicly and to the entire board thank you thank you next is is um Mr Korea um Andy Korea 45 W whis Road um I sent an email earlier today that the board must have read and understood to a certain extent in terms of clarifying um the motion um however you you made that motion earlier to change the executive session um agenda item you said that there would be two agenda items you just went all the way through it and you made one agenda item um um I
would want to point out that um the agenda and the motion that you had only referenced policy 1312 policy 1312 means nothing policy 1312 is a public complaint it it seems like an intentional reason or intentional effort to clean the words public complaint such that it wouldn't be detected by the public um the use of attorney client privilege information for an F exemption so that you can go in to Executive session you need to name a specific matter of a specific lawsuit and you need to State it so the motion that you made is a if you go into an executive session it would be a violation of the foia um if you have it it needs to be a lawsuit or an adjudication process that is you know outside of the Board of Ed
like a state complaint um you can go into executive session if you have another reason like a complaint against the staff member where confid confidentiality is afford it in that case you need to make a motion that says to go into executive session because of apparent complaint against a teacher or principal or central office employee regard regarding a complaint about hiring practices or employee Behavior you need to stay where the complaint came from the type of employee you can't just say a staff member there are foa cases that have reversed rulings that if you just set a staff member you have to say like a nurse or a teacher or an administrator so if you go into an executive session you will be violating the law you have done so six times in a row
I have informed the board a month ago you have violated it a few more times while I sit up here and tell you what you need to do and you're planning to violate it now the history of doing so is to protect members of the administration for having their information known and in doing so you're not acting in good faith as board members my advice is to have a spirited discussion when you vote to go in executive session that you're talking about policy 1312 and if it applies you need to have the disc publicly and if it's about a a complaint then the motion has to state the complaint or the nature of the complaint additionally as it relates to the Brookfield pdeck evaluation support document that you're about to approve I read it Mr
Korea that's your three minutes thank you very much you guys okay we're going to move to item um seven written correspondents the following people have emailed the Board of Education since the last meeting on May 22nd Debbie Brooks audio from 522 media meeting video Denise rice CT sets Kimberly AB BHS adopted senior volunteers needed Mark Banda concerning behaviors at the 522 meeting Dean Rena e8th grade moving up ceremony Deborah C 1312 complaint Dylan t Tower location Anda F violations Aon spera complaint procedures great um let's move to uh item eight which is the approval of board minutes I move that the board approve the minutes listed below as recommended regular meeting from 520 to 24 second second all in favor please signify by saying I I I uh any oppos please signify by saying nay
okay so the motion passes unanimously the board minutes are approved all right now it's time for the superintendent's update Mr Brill you have I'm sorry Dr bril what do you have for us thanks Wendy um so be very brief tonight uh just another like every time I have a Cadence of updating you on our registrations for kindergarten we're at 118 at this time which is very steady from two weeks ago um next we're very excited uh for working with hrra uh in a recycling initiative not only to improve our existing recycling program uh we're working with our uh PTO and uh other parent Volunteers in addition to that we're actually doing a cafeteria audit next week of all three cafeterias to look at the amount of trash versus the amount of recyclables um and then
building in some uh programming and uh parent awareness student awareness uh via assembly and also working with our of instruction and instructional coaches on uh integrating into uh newly developed curriculum some areas where recycling which affects economics and science obviously and and the like uh will be included we're really excited about that and I'd like to thank Casey and Dan qualo for really helping us out in that that regard um in addition to that uh the final piece it didn't make the report tonight but I wanted to announce it because Anna and I just received a couple hours ago received the email the increasing education diversity plan educator diversity plan that we approved the board approved a couple C of uh meetings ago received what's called they're calling conditional approval uh in talking with superintendents
in the area the majority of us seem to be getting a conditional approval they're giving some feedback to us and then we resubmit in October so we're going to understand that feedback a little bit better talk with our different superintendent groups get feedback from the state um and see what we can do to tighten the plan up uh going forward so I wanted to make sure you all knew that that we're on our way with that particular uh new plan that's all I have aw awesome then we're moving a pace uh subcommittee reports um so Joy policy sorry okay uh yes so the policy committee met um on Wednesday May 22nd and Dr Bell informed the committee that the Shipman uh that Shipman and Goodwin the newly engaged Law Firm provides policy services so the
committee reviewed correspondence from the firm which outlines the available services and the associated costs and um I believe that's on the agenda for tonight to talk about uh as well as two policies for final read which I won't go into now because they're on the agenda for later your wonderful thank you very much um so let's move to item 11 that's the consent agenda I move that the board approve the items on the consent agenda as recommended transfers and resignations um all in favor please signify by saying I I um any opposed okay so the consent agenda motion passes unanimously thank you very much all right moving on then to new business so first we're going to talk about flexibilities for implementing the Connecticut guidelines for educator evaluation for for the um 2024 2025 school
year um so uh is this you I to talk about this okay okay okay I move that the board approve the Brookfield pck created Brookfield educator and administrator evaluation and support plan for the 2024 2025 school year for submission to the CT State Department of Education per state statute so let's have some um discussion Anna will you lead that please I would be happy to thank you very much so just as a point of clarification um this uh B this proposed plan that um our professional development and evaluation committee has adopted for Brookfield is no longer under the flexibilities um the flexibilities is what we've been working under for since the beginning of the pandemic so just a point of clarification that this is really implementing the new um guidelines for the educator the certified
educator evaluation plan um and as I kind of spoke about last last month uh there are some um guidelines and statutes that we have to follow before I get into that I just want to thank everybody on the front page of your very lengthy 90 page document I appreciate your patience as you read through that is a list of the members of our pck as you can notice there um there are some requirements for any District's professional development and Ed education committee um or evaluation committee pardon me and it has to be comprised of teachers and administrators as well as at least one member of the par educator Union um and so those folks are listed there and uh we're happy that we have such a a good representation from across the district and I
would also like to send a special shout out and thank you to our co-chairs who are with us tonight Elizabeth Larsson who is a kindergarten teacher at CES and um Liz Spencer who is the uh Ela Humanities content leader here at the High school um so they have shephered us through this process and we appreciate it um it is it was a Yan's effort but to rewrite an evaluation plan and to learn all of the new expectations and guidelines that the state has put down uh come you know put down for us um was was very it was amazingly smooth actually we had we did a lot of work we met a lot of times um but the way that it went was uh is a testament to their leadership so thank you very much
for the work that you have done um as we discussed at the April or the May 22nd meeting um there are a lot of aspects to this plan that are fairly uh they're directly aligned to the state the process that we followed was that we essentially after being trained by uh the state trainers we took the released uh plan and then looked through every single portion of the plan and adopted it to fit the needs of Brookfield based on our strategic plan based on our developing um portrait of The Graduate and where we are as a district in terms of our professional uh development and um the history that we've come from our valuation plans over the last decade or so um so at this point you know it's all it is pretty uh there
I I will be happy to talk about any questions that the board has um but I just want to highlight uh that the one thing that I I really want to I hoping to draw your attention to is at the end of each of the plans you'll notice that the two plans for submission purposes have to be one big document um we started with the administrators because I think as I said before uh previously the administrators did not have a a discerned defined plan just for them it was really just an adoption of the teacher plan which was pretty consistent across the state um so we wanted to start with the administrators make sure that we gave them their due time but also kind of learn from that process and then um really dig into
the teacher plan um but both plans include uh single point competencies for their rubrics um which are kind of the look fors as the evaluators are working in a reciprocal and and kind of collaborative way with the PE with the employee um and it it's a a a more um organic way to give feedback and to have a conversation that is really about professional learning rather than just about a summit of evaluation this the guidelines no longer um have an expectation of summit of ratings if you remember the former High accountability high stakes uh professional uh evaluation plan required Sumi of um you know a rating they're no longer actually um part of the state statute so that's a huge shift and it's a a welcome shift because we can really focus on learning and
not really so much on am I checking the boxes and being compliant so that's the nutshell what questions can I answer can I um get a sense of how you guys uh Brookfield IED this large document sure so um we had uh you know the the um this the uh example example plan um had a couple different choices so for example you know um have to be has to be standards based so you had a couple they had a couple different standards normed um that uh expectations that you could align to we chose learning forward which um is a a national standards-based uh professional learning platform and one of the reasons that we chose that is because we felt um and through the hyperlink on the memo be able to go to the learning uh
through uh in the plan um the uh those standards not only uh support the instructional um core that we have in our single point competency but also provide resources for teachers to really lead their own learning and to connect with their standards so or with their um their professional learning plan and so um and one of the things that we're growing out of from this year which the PC committee came up with last year was that professional Pathways the professional development path ways they very tightly align to that same concept that kind of same schema and so that as teachers are are establishing a goal that is based on student evidence right they'll establish a professional a goal for growth and then they come up with their professional learning plan and that will take them
directly to those learning forward Frameworks um and essentially kind of allow a cross-section between continuing on the pathways concept Pathways model we're still working on how it's going to morph into next year but we're going to continue with that pathway model and then connect with the learning forward framework so as the goals document is being developed they'll be able to kind of it's It's inherent and incumbent of the process to do some research and prep your own um professional learning plan and that is the the uh uh data for your goal that you're demonstrating your you know your achievement of your goal it's essentially going through those learning forward Frameworks going through your um observations they're called reviews of practice because they're not always observations right they may be um watching an instructional coach lead
a professional learning experience you know for adults um or it might be uh an an administrator run a administrative meeting um so the the observations aren't just classroom observations um but that's those are it kind of aligning to where we have come from is one example of how we kind of Brook fiiz it a lot of it but much of it is what the state uh sample plan had to offer us thank you sure well what you plan for rolling it out to the teachers oh that's such a good question we had a long conversation about that where on on Monday was our last pedc meeting of the year and yeah they're they're fun um we actually have had a really good group I'm I'm I'm very um happy to work with this group uh
we have a tentative plan to um during vation or after convocation Orient the entire um certified faculty actually picking up where we left off our last PLC Day on May 24th was a kind of um an adjournment so instead of convocation we adjourned we basically kind of um rolled back the tape on how we started the year so all of the pathway groups everybody came here and they all got jigsawed into different 10 different groups um so every pathway was representative represented in each one of those groups and they basically shared out the learning that they had worked on throughout the year and then after that they came back in here and Dr BR and I kind of went over the Strategic plan and reviewed where we were and kind of did a look forward
of where we are so we're going to start there again on August 30th and then go back into those jigsaw groups and um do a brief orientation and essentially use the first month of school um through uh you know after W Wednesday afternoons and CLT time and those kinds of things to help small groups of teachers digest the plan we have some days set aside in August that um subcommittee group members of pedc will be meeting to flesh out those plans a little bit so we have a motion um on the floor and it has been seconded to approve the uh PC created Brookfield education and administrator evaluation and support plan for the coming school year um for submission to the State per state statute um you guys ready to vote do you need some
discussion on it more okay all in favor please signify by saying I I I any opposed right on so it passes unanimously thank you very much thank you Dr man okay let's move to um the next item about the approval of field trips um for the coming school year I move that the board approve the attached list of field trips for the 2024 2025 school year as requested by BHS principal BHS principal Mark Linda second yeah that's going to be the next one so um yeah these are are is there discussion we have a motion on the floor for approval of these trips um is there a discussion about that all right all in favor uh please signify by saying I I any opposed okay so that uh the field trips are approved now let's
move to field trips for Sports for the um 20242 school year I move that the board approve the attached list of sports field trips for the 2024 2025 school year as requested by athletic director Steve bman any discussion on that all right um all in favor please signify by saying I I I okay that sounds like everybody um any opposed okay great then um those are also the uh Sports field trips are also approved for the next school year wonderful moving on to unaffiliated salaries I move that the board approve a salary increase in of 3% for the unaffiliated employees for the 2024 2025 school year do we have that motion great great so this was an oversight um on our part uh in the in the last round these are the folks who work
at the Town Hall um who support our um our district so is there discussion on this motion um I'd like to make a motion to table a motion okay um can you explain why um I'm not really prepared to vote I need some I need to review some more additional information additional information that has come forth so okay so um motion to table which has been seconded um and so could you could you talk about the type of information that you would need so we can make sure that it's like really specific and acted upon so we could proceed with alacrity on this it's nothing that I can talk about right now in public okay um so I need to be able to get more information to make a more informed decision okay fair enough
then um I'll just add that we have already discussed this um we discussed it at length and all the information that we needed to was in that executive session at the end of our last meeting um and we as Wendy said it was an oversight of we should have came out and just actually added that as one of the Motions to there is no we weren't all prepared to vote that night so I'm not really understanding why we're not prepared to vote now um but if that's the case then I would suggest we add whatever information that you need to tonight's executive session so that we can do that tonight sure yeah absolutely so at the time yes I was ready um but new information has occurred since s so I'm not prepared to make
those all right um so it sounds like we have a couple of uh things to consider here first of all um the the motion we have a motion to table um based on the concerns that Joy has has put forth um and it has been seconded is there more discussion or can we vote on that voting on the table Yeah voting on the table okay um so all in favor to table um all opposed okay so it passes 4 to two um that this motion will be tabled for this meeting okay um so okay so moving on to the next item we have a board candidate vacancy um and then we've got the action is that we talk about um the appointment of a candidate for uh this body um left by the I mean
with the vacancy left by um holl's departure so I emailed you guys um in the last week or so a timetable um and press release about this I used uh the last press release as a model um Joy made a couple of suggestions to to um sharpen some of the language which was much appreciated thank you for that and um let's see let me pull this up so for folks watching at home um especially if you were not uh paying attention when there when we had the vacancy last year um this is how the process will work and and the veteran board members please feel free to jump in um if I missed something so there's some um language in our Charter that that makes this a Time bound operation so we're eager to get
going um um with that we're going to um I mean as long as everybody approves it and and I I believe that you have because I think that people who didn't write to me were okay with the language of the press release um so we'll issue that um tomorrow I'll ask Dr bril to get that out to in all the normal channels and um that'll be wonderful so then the community will be alerted and then we'll have a uh twoe window um applications will be due on Wednesday June 19th for any um residents who are interested in applying and the only um by by Charter I believe the only requirements are that you be a resident um that you be a citizen and that you be at least 18 years old so if you um
have some free time and a Civic heart we urge you to apply um we haven't finalized this as a board uh maybe we'll discuss it um I mean we could discuss it now yeah uh we'd like to be kind of aggressive with this timetable could we have round one of interviews on June 15 and round two of interviews on June I'm sorry June June so hold on I misspoke applications due uh two weeks from today on the 19th round one of interviews on the 25th and round two of interviews if needed on the 27th could board members just take a second and and check their their calendars please yeah I'm not available I can do 24th and 25th could we do because we would all want to be there and Sarah you have a commitment
on 24 right um and I was trying to avoid the 28th is a Friday right and I'm trying to respect the fact that can we do the 20th right after their due on the 20th will we have had time to to Rev let's see for the 21st Sor um could we just clarify first how so if we receive applications are we going to like limit the number of applicants that we interview so are we like you know going to maybe like sort of have some sort of scoring rubric and say like okay we're only going to you know interview eight people or are we ining to interview all of the applicants I I think we do like we did the first time I think all of them but I think that as as so how
it worked last time as applications came in that's when we reviewed them so um unless somebody sends it in on the 19th which is possible but I don't anticipate that happening so we had more than enough time people sent them in fairly quickly we could do the 20th I so I'm not available the 20th through the 25th oh sorry Wendy quick question on the off chance that during that week people have G on to vacation do we shouldn't we allow them another possible beginning of the following week for those that those who can't come to okay yeah so so we could do this um the first week of July we could do you know July 1 and July 3r okay so the only problem we might run into is that's the week of the 4th
of July ands are on vacation we might need to do like the 27th and the third or like split it in two weeks sorry split it in two weeks so that people that are on vacation have equal opportunity as Sarah said um what what's the the last day that we when do we need to actually vote what's that what's that we have 60 days right so from so that's like the end of July at some point right so so I think um the the resignation was announced I believe on June 1st she says effect she said effect of June 1st I know but she announced it but I it's when it's effective when she when it's okay yes so effective June 1st so June 1st 60 days after that right so um I mean it
would be ideal to on board our new person in the month of J July to just because we know what the learning curve is like right um the sooner they get in the better um how about something like like July 8 is a Monday and then maybe July 11 um why not is are we not available is every available July 1st and July 8th at to Mondays right I I say we do we do that the 27th wasn't anybody right that was for me oh it was okay yeah how about how about um July 1st and July 8th July and could we do the first and the n9th I'll be in AA you just had to say like that which which one on the nth okay do we have to do these on business days
yeah how about the um how about the first and the sixth yeah because that might actually work yeah that might actually work better for some folks could you do the first or the sixth I can do the sixth as long as it's in the morning now fine okay everything yeah so July July applications and applications due the 19th and maybe a person will feel compelled to join this board because they're really good at getting dates that quickly we could use your talents okay that's great guys good job okay ex just awesome all right um oh and regarding questions for that um what was the protocol you guys used last time regarding questions did you issue them publicly we did not I don't think okay they were standard sorry there were standard questions um probably have
them yeah no no we have them we have we we've made we've made a couple of um like Joy gave me some feedback we decided to collapse the first two because they were a bit redundant and then have a question that speaks to um you know people's time availability because that's such a huge issue for all of us um yeah my recommendation was to you know how we pretty much everybody asked like what does a job entail and like committees like thought if we can kind of do like a chatchi prior like before they come or give them a coupes read it like these are the Committees this is the time commitment you're expected to you know mean like for every application kind of send that yeah so because that took up a lot of
time to go over so they know yeah for sure yep okay that's a great idea guys um I can work on that and Ros if you want to work on that together yeah sure that'd be wonderful thank you all right then I think we're we're good with that and we're ready to move to Old business we've got um a couple of policies to talk about so the first policy um is bylaw 9324 about meeting purpose and parliamentary procedures Uh I moveed that the board approve bylaw 9324 meeting purpose and parliamentary procedures for a final reading as recommended by the policy Communications committee first reading was on May 1st 2024 second second um is there discussion of this particular bylaw don't to say what it is so this is the change we actually made during the
meeting um changing the streaming the television station to streaming service were there other changes or that's it awesome are we ready to vote then okay all in favor of um approving the new phrasing of bylaw 9324 meeting purpose and parliamentary procedures um please say I I I any opposed okay so the motion passes um next is the approval of policy 6162 d51 survey of students I move that the board approve policy 6162 51 survey of students for a final reading as recommended by the policy Communications commit subcommittee first reading was on May 1st 2024 second so I have a question about this particular one um when we when we approve for a final reading that's the step prior to adoption or that is a adoption okay okay okay yeah yeah I was thinking that for
the for the previous one but I just wanted to be sure um so I have to say because I don't want there to be any surprises that I'm I'm personally not in favor of adoption of this policy because um and I'm sure it's informed by by my um work as a social studies teacher where a an open exchange of ideas is essential to intellectual growth um and so it it makes me um it makes me concerned about what might get called a survey um in in a in classroom or school parlament um and I I understand why my fellow board members have concerns about this policy but I think um actually we have a policy I think it's 6344 about controversial issues and I feel that that policy uh covers a lot of the concerns
um and behaviors that are kind of the the Wellspring of concern around that student privacy um I think it's important that we teach our students to talk about topics that they may consider uncomfortable or difficult and I think that we need to trust the professionals that we have um we have in our buildings to lead um productive healthy conversations within board existing board guidelines so I I just wanted to say that you know where I'm coming from I've I've thought about this a lot and I've read it very carefully and so that's that's where I stand on this issue and I just wanted to say that I'd like to say I support this um policy uh to your point I I think that's a wonderful um mindset to have um but unfortunately um can't trust
everybody in the world and unfortunately um for example a um I don't think it's appropriate for an educator to identify the political affiliation of the students in front of them so that would be one example um and I don't trust um that a educator would respect that and you do that in a non-judgmental way because it has not that has not happened so um that's one reason why we need to have this very important policy in place because unfortunately negative things such as that have been happening quite often and that's just one of the items a through H can I read the policy that you it's like three sentences policy 6144 I just want to see what people think because I didn't I'm just being brought aware of this policy so I'm wondering if it
does conflict or I'm wondering what everyone thinks about it so it's discussing and exploring controver controversial issues may be discussed and explored in the classrooms throughout the school district controversial issues arising in the normal classroom situation may be handled as a regular aspect of instruction and learning in such a way as to not inhibit the digity personality or the intellectuality of either the teacher or the students the superintendent shall see that the necessary administrative regulations are established for dealing with controversial issues in speakers how do we I'm kind of wondering so I'm not sure on what your statement is what the connection is because I'm I'm aware of this policy um but I'm not sure I understand the connection you're trying to make so the way I understand it after you just read that seems
like your issue would have been covered under that so the insertion of language into 61 6251 about instructional materials and it's a lot of language that has gotten inserted into that makes it honestly quite redundant we have a policy that covers controversial issues including the topics he brought up um and if you had you know sort of an issue with that policy being violated it's there right we have we have a policy on it so you're saying then that would violate this policy that 6144 yeah you're you're yeah but what about something like sex behavior and attitudes how is that controversial like I don't understand eth or age doesn't necessarily make it controversial I think these are just difficult topics is that what controversial means I don't in some respects I think that's in some
context a interpretation really yes context dependent yes right with there sorry I'm just wondering the policy committee has discussed just like income How is income controversial it can be difficult not necessarily controversial I I think if I I don't have the dictionary in front of me I guess I could Google it but I don't think the definition of controversial have the word difficult would the would the policy committee has discussed uh taking the policies from J goodwi service and it's and it's um what we would be adopting are the required legal policies but there is we have talked about we kind of threw this around that there is an option for an extra cost for them to review a policy that we have a question about or you know we can go to them with
questions about adopting things like that are would that be something that the board would be interested in spending some money on since this seems to be a sticking point would it be what was the first part you said um so since we're a doc member how the we're adopting the policies and for an extra cost because this is a not a required policy there's an extra cost in having them review and um talk to us about maybe what they would recommend so would that be something we had talked about it maybe not being necessary but I'm wondering since it's kind of we're maybe at a sticking point and this has been a long yeah I understand your point um I have no appetite for that at all and to to call a spade a spade
I mean I I think those that are not in support of the survey it's because of um the book field care survey and that's not why I'm bringing this up that's nothing to do with that because that comment was made at a previous meeting um I think it's it's it has nothing to do with that at least as far as I'm concerned um yeah that's what's where this policy stemmed from you know why it came to light but uh this goes much deeper than the Brookfield Care Service do it does it have to do with another personal issue of yours because that's also it's what's what's currently happening to our students that you're not aware of because you don't have a child in high school so it is a personal thing for you it's not
it's personal for all the students in Brookfield well and to be naive is is is not is not good it sounds like we've had robust discussion is there more I don't know I I was involved in the development of this policy and I I'm kind of conflicted now because of the things that you've brought to light but also mostly because I do feel like this is beyond our scope of being able to properly resolve I think that I know Joy you have said you don't have an interest in having the legal team look at it but it is like a really important thing that I think we need to get right so I'm kind of I don't know I'm I mean we did have our previous legal firm help us with this so I there's
a motion on the table I think we should just vote y I think we should so uh the motion has been made that the board approve policy 6162 d51 survey of students um as recommended by the policy Communications can I ask a clarify question if it does not pass does it go back to the policy committee if you want it to the policy the policy committee can bring it up again if they want a n vote means we're not taking action to approve Now does not mean that it does not come forward against the board in the future so just to candas Sarah do you feel ready to vote Robert Stephan okay all right all in favor um say I I okay so U three four all um sorry all oppos please signify by saying
nay n nay so that's were you a a vote as well because I was looking down so um it's the vote is three to three the um motion does not pass because we need a majority okay of members presented voting okay so um with that uh we will move now to um public comment we have three names for um public comment that was not on the agenda and first up is Mrs Scola Erin SCA 5 Jackson Drive I just um wanted to bring something up that was said to me at the end of one of my public comments um two board meetings ago um and it was I quote just one note on that to clarify I I think it needs to be said that the board hears the frustrations and it's consistent and it's
easy to track but by law the board has no role in the special education process you can talk about your child but we cannot respond other than providing resources the administration requests so that's the point of the evening so I'm going to remind you I went through cape and when you guys you know we follow cape for everything else and you know as a board member you're each elected to help create a public school system that meets the individual needs of all children regardless of their ability race Creed sex or social standing so why is it that we are constantly told that sped is beyond the board scope those students and needed I remind you that most children who are identified who have a learning disability or average to above average intelligence you're not talking
about lack of intelligence you're looking at a child needs a different type of instruction they're entitled to that instruction whatever it looks like so I am constantly I'm up here constantly about it I've been at this for two and a half years I'm not going away I can get it right for my kid but I'm going to make sure every child in Brookfield that is identified has what they need to be successful so they don't follow the path that my children had to offer through but I'm going to remind you that every identified child regardless their education matters just as much as a student sitting in the crowded AP honors classes that we're talking about thank you Mrs schola next is Mrs CES de k21 middle View Drive um I was actually going to Echo
very similar um content and statement that Miss Clare just provided I do feel the same way we are always up here talking we're always a PA representing I can tell you from my own personal uh experience with my child anybody who knows me knows that my child story is a beautiful story of overcoming many challenges and it was always her story to tell sadly in fighting for her I have had to share that story that private story we're not here to rake anybody over the coals we want the same thing for our child our children that all the other children get we want the same policies and procedures followed for our children by that's mandated by the law that's all unfortunately administrators make these decisions sometimes they're poor decisions but they need to be rectified
they need to be fixed so that we can get better and move on I might not ever see it for my children in this District during this time when I'm faced with such rebuttal but maybe hopefully in the future it can changed I can tell you and I know we're not supposed to name anyone specifically but I will say Mr Roland has been such a welcome in this in this District I can't tell you how much support I have personally received from him but he cannot do it alone things need to be changed that's all I have to say thank you thank you Mrs KES Mr Korea Andy Korea 45 West wh Road I have a few things to bring my reading of the charter is that the board member that you invite onto the
Board needs to be a registered Republican um it was interesting the discussion of the controversial policy and whether the board was capable of having the discussion making a decision your main role is policym so if you can't make policy then you're on the wrong board um there was a 4 SLI toward the end was I guess a an assumption that it was uh 34 so that I think it was representative how the board has acted with um caucuses up to date but it doesn't you know it doesn't serve the district to have to approach things from a preconceived position but rather do your job um the only issue with public comment really is the are the issues we bring forward and the fact that they're not being addressed we wouldn't be here they were being
addressed right um now there have been hallway discussions with between Administration uh and the board between regular session and special session which are by the way as I'm becoming an expert a violation of the foa where it's you know non-board members or maybe Administration members or directing board members how maybe they can control public comment and I think we heard a little bit about that tonight and that's that's highly concerning um and additionally I didn't get a chance to talk about the pck evaluation support document um I think you know obviously it's a state mandated process Etc but with local control we could put a wrong stamp on it and what I didn't see in that 91 page document that was essentially driven by the employees being measured was any provision where an employee if
they need help to get you know to improve it or not performing where that ends there is no provision for termination and that's important um you don't want to get there but somehow you know when when you have a Workforce you know doing essentially a very similar job in very early stage employees with 400 people eventually you'll have people that need to be worked out of the business for one reason or another and knowing how and where you get there like after you know going through and saying okay you need to work on this you need to work on this if you're on round three you you have a notice you need to work on it some some districts some states some contracts have like a strike one strike two and then you get a
you know next time you know you're you're essentially not going to be employed further that that is a a severe um defect in an employee management system thank you thank you Mr kria okay uh now we're going to move to um three main points we've covered a lot of ground tonight um Stephanie what uh what did you capture and board members think about what you uh think belongs on the three main points um I think it would be uh fun to highlight some of the seniors or all of them or just like the sen do like a senior highlight um the Brookfield admin evaluation plan and the board bacy so that that can really get out to the public we're unanimous okay upcoming events we've got the board uh vacancy dates got do we need
quick action on that sorry oh vaces yeah so um the vacancy dates of the um applications due on the 19th and then the um I close my laptop what did we say the first and the and the eth first and theth of July so those are those are big dates for board members um Dr BR would we be able to have those at TSO can we arrange for that to happen for the um interviews do they happen there or do they happen somewhere else had yeah okay great and we can get all that fixed for Saturday as well awesome Joy we'll give you the times Saturday may be a challenge there might be overtime involved I have to work on the custodial schedule there and figure that out okay thank you um please keep us
posted I'll be in contact about that so then is that it okay so with that hold on I have to find my paper so for folks watching um this concludes the public portion of our meeting um we are going to move and then vote to go into um executive session so with that I uh propose the following motion that we um that the board move into executive session um for two items first is the discussion of confidential attorney client privileged communication regarding the board's role and Authority regarding personel matters and board policy 1312 and the second item is self-evaluation of the board second great with that so I just have a question so do we need doesn't the motion have to State the complaint no no it's we're discussing the attorney client privileged communication regarding
the board's role and Authority regarding personel matters and policy 1312 so we're not why are we not discussing the complaint if the the policy 1312 is the complaint that came in this this is the whole point and and I totally get your question and I I get yours as well um this is the the point of the executive session is to discuss the attorney client privileged communication about the complaint and about the board's roles and Authority um regarding Personnel matters as it relates to policy 1312 okay and so the motion doesn't have to State the complaint the motion has to state the topic that we will be discovering and it has to be specific enough to inform the public about the nature of it while still retaining the attorney client that's what I worry about
that it's not being transparent to the community of what is it just says regarding the policy regarding policy 1312 so it's regarding the this and this is why I brought up the amended motion so if you'd like to look at this is the language that we used it's there's a slight deviation there regarding the roles the board's role and Authority which you have here yes I don't see any different on can I ask clarify can I ask the clarifying questions okay so we are not discussing the actual complaint right under 1312 we first have to decide if we are going to hear the complaint our attorney is here and correct me if I'm wrong is going to help us with his attorney client privileged information regarding our r Authority in that Personnel matter under that
policy and then we will decide if we hear the complaint we are not talking about the complaint tonight am I right yes that is correct and I appreciate your clarification so the first step with with any complaint issued under 1312 the first step is for the board to decide if they're going to take this up or not right that's that's why I'm confused because we we had this situation in a prior meeting and we did it in public on our agenda right it did not have a attorney client privileged information which is what we will be discussing this evening okay so we need a two3 majority vote to enter into executive session all in favor um please signify by saying I I any oppose please signify by saying Nay n so the U motion passes
and we will um move to Executive session good night everyone
