go ahead Rosa okay good evening everyone today is Wednesday November 4th 2020 and I will call the regular meeting of the Brookfield Board of Education to order in accordance with executive order 7B suspending sections 1- 1206 1 d225 1- 226 of the Connecticut General statutes the public will not be able to attend this meeting in person but will have the ability to view or listen to the meeting in real time by way of the Brookfield Board of Education YouTube channel furthermore such meeting will be recorded or transcribed and posted on the board's website within seven days of the meeting and made available as required by law all speakers taking part in the meeting are reminded that they are to clearly State their names and titles if applicable before speaking on each occasion that they speak

individuals wishing to participate in the public portion of this meeting May do so by calling the following numbers area code 6099 or area code 8592 and the meeting ID tonight is 1255 okay so let's stand where we are for the pledge I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all okay we have all seven of our board members and uh lots of members of the administration here tonight um up first we have a student Spotlight and our students tonight are from Huckleberry Hill Elementary School so uh Rosa I'd like to turn it over to Mrs Sho we're going to be talking a little bit about ruler and writing instruction tonight uh in

what we will call celebration in a digital world so Mrs leano please take it over sure good evening everyone before I begin I want to thank the families that are joining us tonight Julia Mato Sophia and Joey thank you for joining and representing the amazing students of Huckleberry when Lisa gramling called me a few weeks ago to remind me that Huckleberry would be spotlighted during the November 4th Board of bed meeting I really had a hard time deciding what to Spotlight because everyone is working so very hard I thought it was really important to Spotlight these efforts and how staff have created an incredible learning environment and have adapted to our new normal almost seamlessly our students are amazing and have really taken on learning in our new environment when we went 100% remote to

two weeks ago staff and students adjusted easily because of all of the work that we did to prepare for the now one teacher said it best it's just two weeks of Wednesdays tonight we are going to explain and show how we have continued ruler andal in our day-to-day whether we are in school or at home Mrs Tiffany Johnson a third grade teacher and two of her students are here to talk about their love for ruler and how emotions matter I also wanted to Spotlight how we are teaching writing in a virtual world and still able to celebrate student work in each other Mrs Steph lsbury a fourth grade teacher and two of her students will talk a bit about writing a writing unit that was recently completed and how students celebrated each other virtually one

student will even share his amazing work awesome job Matteo I hope you enjoy and are as proud as I am of their efforts so now I'm going to let Tiffany begin um with ruler at Huckleberry thank you Mrs leano so good evening Dr burill Dr Ruby and of Education members thank you so much for having us here tonight I am excited to share that my third graders have done a tremendous job transitioning to our new way of learning I've always known this but it was confirmed for me this year that students truly are resilient with many 100% remote Learners in our classroom Community my students had to make the shift early on to using the computer for a variety of tasks so we could work together to build our classroom community no matter where we

were learning from ruler has been a top priority since day one and tonight I have two students Joey and Sophia who would like to share about how we are using technology to discuss emotions learn how to regulate them and how we are working on being our best selves Joey do you want to start off by talking about the mood meter Eric if you can just go to the next slide please thank you every morning Mrs Johnson posts the ruler online mood meter in the classroom stream and we plot ourselves then we go to Google classroom and write in our emotions matter Journal here's an an example of one of my entries from last week as you can see I had high high energy and I was feeling Pleasant so I was in the yellow quadrant

I was feeling exhilarated because I was excited for fair tail writing that day after we Dr an our emotions matter Journal two stud students share what they are feeling and we discuss as a class about what strategies we can use to shift our emotions if we want to thank you Joey and Sophia would you like to share a little bit about the meta moment and learning about our best selves yes okay another part of ruler that we have been working on while learning is taking a metam moment and being our best selves it is important to be your best self because it makes us feel good about ourselves and helps us not hurt other people's feelings taking a meta moment gives you time to visualize your best self and it helps you figure out strategies

to control your emotions as you can see on Google Docs we did an activity where we brainstormed adjectives that D describe our best selves when we are working together in breakout rooms we try to encourage each other to be our best self s when we are learning like if one of my friends are feeling is feeling left out in the breakout room I try to include them and help them be their best self to work with the group thank you Sophia so as you can see learning virtually has not stopped us from becoming tion scientists and the classroom Community really has strengthened even more so I think this year than in past years and everyone has really come together and I know that's the same case for every classroom amongst Huckleberry Hill Elementary this year

thank you all right um I'd like toate what what Tiffany what Miss Johnson said um our fourth graders are also doing electronic uh mood meters and we all start our day with it and it's really great to have the technology capabilities to be able to do that um I'd like to tell you guys a little bit about our first fourth grade writing unit that we recently completed a couple of weeks ago um it is one of the writing units that the fourth graders seem to enjoy more than any other unit all year and um it's writing realistic fiction and the kids learn how to come up with stories based on ideas they wished existed in the world or um they learn how to come up with characters who struggle with problems that maybe have the

similar similar problems as they themselves experience in their lives um so our unit really focused on developing um a realistic fiction idea coming up with a character that was believable uh drafting scenes the kids really worked so hard to um learn how to show what was happening to a character rather than summarizing summarizing what was going on um and they did a really wonderful job um throughout the entire unit and the way we decided to celebrate uh this year because students are both in school and at home was using um the flip grid website and um Mata will tell you a little bit about it right now after we were were done writing we recorded our stories on flip grid so we could share our story with our classmates this is a fun way to

celebrate with everyone because some people are in school and some people are at home now I would like to share my flip grid recording with you all right guys I'm going to show you my story from writing here so this is going to be scene one this is scene one of my story it was a hectic School morning as most mornings were the weather on this Monday morning matched my mood foggy I yelled out mom where're on my shoes I reached under my bed and found them before she could reply I slipt them on and ran downstairs afraid I was going to miss the bus I grabbed my backpack and yelled out I love you the bus is here got to go mom replied have a great day I love you too the bus door

opened and I grabbed my seat and sat down I was tired and I was looking out the window and realized we were already at school then it hit me I forgot my homework on the kitchen table oh no now what I grabbed myself in frustration all right scene two as I was walking down the hall to my classroom the smell of the cafeteria cheered me up tempor rarily when I got to the my desk it felt like everyone was looking at me I I looked down at my empty desk everyone else had their homework out and I felt their stairs at me because I didn't have mine I pretended to look for them but I didn't have any paper to pull out from my backpack on top of it all I forgot to sign in

for lunch I was too distracted with my missing homework to even think about food see free after morning check-in was math I barely even noticed that math had started the Sun was shining I was looking outside while map started it looked so beautiful all I thought of was run going outside and running with my friends just then my math teacher called on me to answer a math act Billy you're up my teacher said he held up a I held up a flash card that said wait no the teacher held up a flash card that said two times two I couldn't think of the answer I fought so hard and finally it came with with eight the class yelled I heard the laughter so I put my head in my hands I was embarrassed scene four

I finally got to the end of the school day and my teacher told the whole class we're going to have a me Museum project tomorrow bring object that you like to play with something that teaches the class about you my teacher said I was excited and I knew right away what I was going to bring I was going to bring my awesome dinosaur skeleton that I love I was so I was excited to share it with the whole class it was going to be so much fun I hope I don't forget my object I said to myself just then the principal came on the loudspeaker and called all parent pick up and Busters to be dismissed I couldn't wait to get home and play with my skeleton toy scene five the next day I was

I was on the bus I am playing with my skeleton head for my project in school and my best friend asked to see it I pull up to school and I run to class after a while I noticed I forgot the head I began to panic and worry about his skeleton and head where did it go my body starts to feel hot and Queasy and soon after that the office calls in and the bus saver the bus driver saves the day I left the skeleton head on the bus I run to the office and get it and I get my skeleton head back I'm relieved scene six last scene when I got home I was really nervous something was wrong with me why do I keep forgetting everything I went to my mom and and

I explained my problem she said sounds like you need more sleep after all when I thought about it I had been going to school really late all week because I was gaming until midnight the next few days I made sure I went to sleep on time and little by little I was less tired and less forgetful I felt like my brain was energized it felt really good and strong pretty soon I was remembering everything it was a great feeling no more lost homework no more missed lunch count no we're forgetting math facts I learned some new facts too I think I was ready for anything I guess I should have listened to my parents and relaxed a little at night after all gaming isn't worth losing my memory for the end so that was my

story that was my um writing story thanks for watching thank you Matteo for sharing um you can go to the next slide Julia you're up sweetie Mato that was a great story I like how much description you put into it even though we aren't all in schol school every day it is important to find ways to celbrate our hard work recording on flip grid was so fun it was a great way to connect everyone and share while all being a part I listen to every classmate's story and usually we don't get to do that here is what some of my classmates had to say about flip grid one all students were able to use technology to share their creative stories to there are Al there are special effects on flip grid to make your recording

more fun three when recording at home no one can interrupt you for you you can comment on each other's videos giving compliments or sharing problems with technology five you can listen to your favorite stories over and over again thank you Julia um as a as the creator of the flipd flip grid page um I was able to see how many times stories um were viewed and it was amazing to see that every classmate had like more than 20 views um and I actually asked Julia to come on here and speak with you tonight because she took the time to comment on every single classmates's story um and I thought that that was super kind um and as a teacher myself s when the kids are celebrating I of course I know all their stories from

working with them um in the classroom but I don't get to be part of their Min celebrations in class because they're all in different small groups so this was this was really awesome for me too as a teacher to just have that oneon-one time you know um watching everybody's videos so thank you for uh listening to us tonight that was awesome aome and really great job Mato we really enjoyed that story Mato never forgets his homework he never forgets to sign up for lunch and I don't think he ever goes to bed late because he's gaming right Mato that's great does does the board have any questions for Mrs Johnson uh Mrs Lansbury or Mrs laano or the kids just want to say thank you for all that you do and inspiring them obviously inspiring

them to um you know be really involved in their education and you know that that's what it's all about with writing and sparking their creativity and enthusiasm and you can see it it shows um just like Miss Fernanda says nice job Mato so descriptive I love the details great vocabulary do you want to come teach with me nice job all the kids good job Joseph I just wanted to say um to Sophia and Julia and Matteo and Joseph congratulations on doing such a great job on zoom and adapting to the technology that you've been um that might be new to you you know sometimes it's hard for even all of us adults who are on this meeting and having to adapt to zoom for all different uses so I'm really really impressed with all of

you how comfortable you are and how confident you are in your abilities so keep it up yeah I want to say a great job to the teachers uh Joy hit on it the enthusiasm is clearly up and that is that is all you guys so uh you know very appreciative and and uh thanks thanks for showing this is actually very very reassuring all right so I just again say thank you to Mrs Johnson and Mrs lsbury and certainly Mrs laano and of course Sophia and Julia and Joey and Mato we are just so proud of you and so appreciative of you and your families for letting you be on tonight and uh sharing here at our board meeting we're just uh just so proud of you and so excited for all of your learning that's

been going on and especially staying so focused during the last two weeks of remote learning and getting focused to be uh back in school uh the rest of this week and into next week we can't wait to see you in person thank you all very much John I just wanted to add that I think um it was so impressive how articulate um you students were you know articul you were able to speak like if I wasn't seeing your pictures and I didn't know who your teachers were I would have thought you were like in Middle School getting ready to go to high school because you spoke so well and I think that for the for board members and and for anybody who's listening um the opportunity to have to you know wrestle with um challenging

technology and be able to to uh relate to peers that are not in the same space as you are is uh actually you know if if we can think about some of the positive things that come have come out of the situation that we're in which I think we have to do that um this is one of them um these children have developed skills that they never would have had the opportunity to develop if they were in the old normal and not having to um really put themselves out the way they did it's just I'm really impressed you guys are awesome and of course the faculty um I just have to say that we went through this every flip grid was like what's flip grid when we first started it um uh last March I

remember when okay you guys can do flip grid and um it's it's really some that you guys should know is that we use flip Grid in college classes and so uh that's the only way you know I knew about it and the teachers just grabbed it and the kids just learned it like that so you are so ahead of where other kids who would have been in your grades um were one or two years ago you're you're amazing you should give yourselves a good pat on the back because you did such a great job thank you all right thank you everyone any other questions or comments okay so we will move on to public comment I'm GNA just take a look through I don't see any phone numbers on here so I don't think anybody's

calling in for that so I think we can move on to the student representative report so tany hi I don't know how I'm going to top the stories that we just heard but um I'm tamy Cheno as the Brookfield High School student representative um first I think that students are very glad to be getting back to school and getting back into that routine and also having some more days to play some sports before the fall season's over um for clubs the peer counselors held a virtual Zoom lunch with the new students in order to make them feel more connected because we heard that they were um they felt a little distanced because of all the distance learning which went well um NHS is still doing virtual tutoring and are starting to plan some community service

opportunities that we could possibly do and then lastly the seniors would just like to know what events that we could do like pep rallies or if we could do something outside or in the spring but I guess that's all all up in the air but um yeah that's all thank you okay thank you any questions for Tami all right so let's move on to written correspondence okay Ron jaffy shared a Sesame Workshop on racial Justice stavos mulos wrote regarding the transition to remote Ed and Cindy Deo wrote regarding the transition to remote and Co protocols Susan Edgars wrote regarding meeting dates Kim rachela wrote regarding the 2021-22 school year calendar and Melissa and Jen gr wrote regarding students riding the bus okay thank you up next is approval of board minutes I'll move that the

board approve the minutes from the regular meeting on October 21st 2020 and the board retreat on October 22nd 2020 second thanks Bob all in favor I I thank you that's unanimous up next is the superintendent update all right thanks Rosa um so I wanted to uh update uh the board on a number of items uh that have been going on so as everybody knows we've got some good news uh in working with our uh collaborating with our not only our local Health director but Regional Health director out of new town as well as our medical advisor and at our data over the last couple of weeks um we are able to return to school tomorrow uh in hybrid which is part of our plan and then our original date of November 9th which is next

Monday we are able to return um K through 8 uh uh into the 100% model um while we call it the 100% model about 79% of our students will becoming uh back to us uh full plus 79% which means 21% of parents have elected to have their children uh be on remote uh learning at this point in the year um and then for bus transportation about 74% of our parent parents indicated that the children will be uh riding the bus uh daily so we wanted to let you know about that um we're really excited um that our desks are in the shields are installed uh the faculty and administration is ready to go custodians are ready to go maintenance is ready to go and uh we're just really excited to get back and of course

we'll continue to monitor uh all of the Health Data uh to make sure we have a safe return that was the first item I wanted to talk about as well as remind everybody that we've sent home home over the last few days um and and I do apologize for any email fatigue that people might be suffering but there's a lot to communicate whether it's flowcharts on protocols and returning to uh to school if you were not feeling well um and self-monitoring um or taking a look at the State's new um covid data dashboard which is very important so parents and the public could look at the same data that the State Health directors superintendents of schools nurses and so forth are looking at so very transparent how decisions are made um all of that data

is updated every Thursday and that just started last week so we're really excited that we can get that out to everyone um I want to thank our uh Administration excuse me administrative team uh Dr Ruby Mrs farious our principales department heads uh teacher leaders everyone who participated in ensuring that we had a wonderful um and productive professional development day yesterday um there was a lot of great work that was going on not only in uh technology and the work that has to go on there uh in Social and emotional learning that we've been focused on uh but also a number of activities uh specifically a lot of work at the high school in the area of equity uh and diversity so we're really excited about uh the movement that is already Ono in the district

uh last week uh the State Department of Education gave some direction and I was able to share with the uh public uh that we now in lie of snow days where we actually close school um and then add that emergency day onto the end of the school year we do have the option now for this year to have uh to call a remote learning day since we have the technology and the wherewithal to engage in a remote learning day so instead of closing school what we would do is just move to remote learning so school would still be in session so we're working on all the details of being prepared to do that um and that would be something we would really like to engage in the only time that we wouldn't be able to

uh use a remote day on a weather day would be if there was a you know a really large scale power outage where we couldn't engage in remote learning either and then of course school would just be closed uh in kind of the oldfashioned way big storm or something like that and we'd add that day to the end of the school year we'll let you know my understanding is that the television stations and so forth actually have a new uh little click we can do for remote learning so we could easily notify uh through the TV and so forth that people like to uh engage with but of course we send Anil Emil home and a text message alert Chromebooks uh some of you have heard some of the news on that uh we had

the supply chain issue in uh throughout the whole state in the country we were not able to get all of our Chromebooks that we ordered uh 400 came in the other day earlier this week and they've been unpacked and are getting ready to distribute through our tech department the first uh batch of the 300 that the state is giving to us uh are coming in uh I think they're arriving tomorrow so we are on our way and the deliveries are scheduled and certainly uh Eric has that all worked out with his team and we've also had some volunteers helping us uh unpack all of those Chromebooks you can imagine it's a it's a tall task but what's nice is there are many uh devices that really are on their last leg and as Eric has

shared with us before literally using duct tape to hold them together so we're going to be able to exchange those out immediately and then ensure that uh those uh those new Chromebooks can get distributed not only for our one toone program at the high school and our eth nth grade classes but also uh down through the lower grade so we're really excited about that Eric did you want to share anything on the Chromebooks um no just that I hadn't shared with you that the uh the first round from the state actually came today um and will be making their way to the elementary schools tomorrow morning through our Center School Tech and myself so um no no so yeah I hadn't had a chance to update you on that so excent um we are currently

sitting with um plenty plenty of Chromebooks to start with more to come excellent thanks Eric really appreciate that and send our best to the team for all their hard work on that um our Capital plan uh the board approved the capital plan uh at our last meeting two weeks ago uh don't forget that one of the caveats was for us to take the high school locker room project from year two um and uh see if we can move it to year one Mr post and I met with Mr Dunn uh two different times since the last meeting and uh he supported us in moving it to the um year one uh of that and to follow the process and uh move it forward so that that was not a an issue and we'll see how

the process goes obviously as we bring it through Board of Selectmen and board of Finance uh through through our regular budget process so that's the update on Capital we did follow up on that in terms of the CAC winter Athletics you heard just a quick report that uh fall Sports is finishing up this week and a little bit into next week um we're glad to be back from remote learning so we can move forward uh with the fall Sports for the students the Department of Public Health is actually working with CIA on winter sports and they're starting to uh reassess and um uh rate the high moderate or low risk of particular Sports for the winter so we're waiting on some decisions to come down in the next week or two um and certainly Mr

Baldwin Mr Bland and myself have been uh working out how uh in readying ourselves for what winter sports could look like so uh certainly Mr Baldwin will be in touch with all of the uh a student athletes and families as soon as he has that information so just know that that's out there we are paying attention but uh like all the high schools and and even middle schools we're all waiting uh on Department of Public Health and and CIA to see uh how things turn out and then the last thing I wanted to share tonight was I was invited uh speaking of Athletics uh Mr Baldwin holds an athletic advisory Council once a week on Wednesdays and I was able to attend and engage with the students last week at their meeting and um as

usual uh the kidss are fantastic it's really great to talk to them and try to understand exactly where they're coming from and what their needs are they were really interested in talking about the remote days in Li of snow days that was one that they really wanted to talk about but they also were really impressed and um uh pleased to share with Mr Baldwin and me uh how happy they were with the teachers in terms of the teachers cooperation flexibility understanding um and the great job they thought were doing in terms of remote learning and and the remote instruction for them and so that was really heartening to hear um and that was that was really to a student and uh I think there was about 15 students on the call so um I just

want to let you know we were involved with that and uh that is my report I don't know if anybody has any questions for me I guess not all right thanks thank you appreciate it thanks Rosa all right uh up next week we have the subcommittee reports which we have none uh next is the consent agenda also none so we can move on to new business and the first item is the class siiz report so Dr Ruby so I think you received um a copy of the class siiz report it's in its traditional form as you can see um if you've had a chance to look at the report each of the principles um worked very hard this was like a moving Target this year I mean it's it's always a little tricky to gather

this data it seems like something that you just do but it's a little more challenging than one would think this year was um particularly tricky because we're constantly having kids um come and go uh come and go from you know hybrid to full remote by choice to kids coming um leaving and going to homeschooling um which we'll we'll talk about in a moment so um first on the on the report is Center school and I think that Center School is particularly interesting and uh Mary Rose Diamond can speak to um what we're seeing in kindergarten which um she's amazing at keeping her finger on the pulse of uh what's happening in kindergarten um every year but this year has been particularly tricky because people have been um put in a position where there are more

options for um what parents are thinking about doing with their kindergarteners given the context of of covid so um Mary Rose I'm gonna stop talking and let you take over uh Meen do you want me to talk about all of the or just the just the kindergarten situation I think uh if you can highlight what's going on in kindergarten and what we've um what we've been doing with regard to this year's kindergarten and what we what we're trying to do to get accurate numbers for next year I think that the board would love to hear that the rest is pretty self-explanatory okay so yes so in kindergarten we are currently um uh excuse me we are we are class sizes as you know are on the low side because of the enrollment um as a

result of parents who've chosen to make other plans for their children um for this school year so we are we are kind of it's fluctuating too we had another student um withdraw earlier this week um because of the hybrid you know the remote they they just they couldn't they in kindergarten as you know they have an option to to have full day kindergarten in some of these private private schools so um they're they're taking that option in some cases um and then we've had other students who are you know who have come back we have H we have a couple of students who are starting in a month or so who par whose parents are moving um so it's it's been it has been kind of fluctuating in kindergarten um with the current uh the

current um population what it has afforded us the option to do we've talked about is um you know when we're coming back 100% for our students um on Monday um we did share with with families that um because we have a um smaller enrollment um we will be able to accommodate our kindergarten students coming um full day every day moving forward um even if we were to go back into a hybrid situation um so again there's enough there's enough social distancing um space available um and we think that we've we've seen tremendous uh again this is off topic a little bit I apologize but um the with our kindergarten students who've been coming in every day um since the beginning of the year but coming in for half days and teachers have reported and I've

seen myself just a an amazing transition for students um you know coming in from you know having been home especially everyone you know given what the what last spring looked like um moving into the um into this into this uh fall uh with students that that rep that routine that repetition U being able to come in every day for a shorter period of time uh teachers have just again reported great transitions uh getting through curriculum at a very rapid rate um and just really good um connections with students that that we've been able to to build so that's been a a really um a great situation given our our current situation um what we've done for next year uh we we sent out we created a survey um I shared with you I think last

time we had about uh 39 parent par families um who did defer uh kindergarten this year for one reason or another um we have sent out a survey uh to determine what their plans are for next year um so as you might imagine there were a wide variety of reasons that people deferred kindergarten um and so we wanted to get an idea of what we'd be looking at in terms of um you know are all 39 of those kids planning to come back to kindergarten next year um you know what were they will they be uh continuing to homeschool um or come to first grade and so we I think we have um I think we've heard from all but maybe 10 of them at this point um I don't have the numbers right in

front of me but we uh we we have discerned uh again how many we anticipate to have in first grade um versus kindergarten versus and and possibly not returning at all um to Brookfield so that there's just a couple that are have decided to go to uh to continue to pursue private schools um so a good number of them get just anecdotally are uh anticipating going to first grade um because they are completing kindergarten um in a private private situation um but fully intend to enroll in first grade next year so that put our minds at ease a little bit as we were you know contemplating what this uh bubble could look like um so I think where it will not be as significant maybe as we'd anticipated again fingers crossed we let parents know

that their decision or their the information they provided for us this during this survey is not binding um we were just looking for their kind of what their thoughts were for next year um so that we could plan appropriately and they've been very responsive um our secretaries have been fantastic they've been calling to follow up with any parents who did not respond um initially to the emails and Survey that we sent so we're I think we have a much better idea now as we move into the next phase of planning for next year thank you for sharing that so it's uh it's it's like Mary Rose needs an accounting degree to keep track of what's going on down there um but we we are really pleased that with the way things kind of played out

that we can safely um have all of those kindergarten students in school using the mitigation strategies that are outlined by in our plan and that are recommended by CDC and the state because we feel um well we would like all children to be in school all the time but particularly our little ones because um when you you fall behind early it's very very hard to catch up and I think kudos to U Mary Rose and the teachers that's Center school because when we look at our curriculum planning maps and we look at um where the weeks the weeks play out in curriculum I think Mary Rose either I have it in my mind or you already said it but the the the children in those grade LEL those lower grade levels are actually ahead of

where they would typically be in a non-co school year that which is like amazingly impressive and it shows you how well the teachers have uh they worked during the summer to get things going and put things together and how well they're able to uh Implement um the instruction with these children in the way that Mary Rose designed it to be uh implemented with all those kids coming in half a day so I'm I'm just so impressed with the work that uh Mary Rose and her teachers did and I think that's a lot more interesting than the numbers that you can read on your own but if you have any questions about that we'd be happy to entertain those no questions okay so we're going to move along to Huckleberry Hill and um this is Lano

you can talk about your enrollment this year and and could you also highlight uh where you are even though we're not talking about curriculum I I can't resist um where your teachers are with regard to um implementing the curriculum sure so let me just talk a little bit about numbers first um we're actually with I don't remember the numbers right off the top of my head of the amount of students who actually withdrew from Huckleberry um but regardless our numbers are you know still pretty much hovering where we thought they were going to be even last year so um as you can see our second grade the most uh second grade classroom has is 22 students um in third oh I went to move my screen but I realized that Eric you need to scroll

up for me a little bit thank you so if you look at third grade grade um the largest class size we have is 21 and in fourth grade the largest class size we have is is 21 as well our grade four it still has nine classrooms where our second grade and third grades um have eight classrooms um each um in regards to curriculum um we are pretty much spoton we're only about a week and a half to two weeks behind schedule um and that was you know including fully implementing the first six weeks um the new unit that the teachers myself created during the summer to implement um how ruler andal which you saw tonight would be implemented in a virtual world and then also all the technology uh lessons and um to get students

ready and prepared for you know the from the day one you know from day one our little guys second grade uh third and fourth grade were you know Trucking their their Chromebooks to school for B IOD back and forth every single day um and that has really really helped us um so I thank all the families out there who um keep you know putting those uh Chromebooks in their backpacks every night to bring them to school each day because it's it's been tremendous I don't think we would have been as successful as we were when we were remote um if we weren't if students weren't able to hands on and do all those types of Technology lessons and and making those connections through SE and ruler like we been doing I mean you guys saw

it tonight during our Spotlight um just a little snippet and that's what everyone's doing those were just representatives of all the kiddos at Huckleberry uh second third and fourth so we're we're flying like I I can't get over how proud I am of my staff um in regards to even their synchronous instruction and practically teaching live all day long um but everyone's doing a really great job thank you very much Melissa so you know I think that when you think about the younger kids at at Center School we have a decreased um number of students and we're able to keep up and actually Advance the curriculum the class sizes as you can see in Huckleberry are pretty much within the guidelines um we haven't lost that many students and with that age group we're able

to stay on target even with the um the curriculum that we uh inserted into the beginning of the year to make sure that we were for relationships and really making sure that students were um comfortable doing the work and this Melissa made it sound like it was so easy you should it's not um and the teachers literally I'm you know I'm going to say this and I'm not it's not just they they've been killing themselves in terms of the hours and the work that they've been doing to support not only the students but each other so um thank you Melissa and your team and I think you know you you had the evidence to back up what we're saying um tonight with your teachers and your students so thank you very much they make it

look seamless but I you're absolutely wrote right Dr Rie I mean that didn't just H you know what you saw tonight didn't just happen overnight it was really you know the efforts of everyone and all the hard work since day one I mean we really hit the ground running from the very very first day of school and so thank you and now if we can look at um whis skiner and um mayor Renda is going to speak to us about whiner and what's really interesting is how well whis skiner is doing um and Dean has a number of new faculty and he has um been able to support all of these new people that joined our faculty at whiner this year to have an amazing first couple of months and he's going to come on

now and tell you about his population all right thanks Dr Ruby um as you can see the uh there's our total number of students uh that we have in whiner by grade level um that we are actually our numbers this year are are really great um size-wise obviously not all of these students are in class at the same time right now because we do have some at home uh with our remote Learners um but as you can see with grade five we only have 2% of our students uh excuse me our class sizes that are above the recommended guidelines we have 5% in Sixth and 22% in sth and as you can see eighth grade is currently our largest class at 226 and right now we have about 48% of those uh sections that are

above uh the class siiz guidelines um with the other uh things below I'm Eric if you could scroll up with the unah classes um again you'll you'll notice the numbers there I mean I you guys can see it most of them are again below 50% in the in the guidelines our our biggest classes uh end up being in the eth grade because of the larger number of um of students in the eth grade and talking about curriculum we same thing our teachers have been absolutely fabulous uh as you know if you have a middle school student our teachers our students are staying in their home rooms during the day and our teachers are actually rotating around and going into the classes um matter of fact it's funny because there you know it's the whole um

every teacher's now on a cart per se and we're starting something this week we're going to call it the um cart of the week because some of our teachers started to decorate their their carts as they as they move through the hallways and as you can imagine if you've ever been at whis skiner the teachers that have to go out to the Portables in our little our little Runway I call it portable Runway and then come back that'll be fun during the winter days um when the weather starts getting um a little uh you know tough but um I mean really the teachers have have been unbelievable I'm sure similar to all the schools uh we have teachers that have these big carts because they they went to tag sales and bought monitors so they

can have extra screen monitors to be able to see the zoom students so it's not just carrying around a computer it's carrying around a lot of you know charts that they use for their classes um obviously because they they don't have the luxury of having their materials and everything right in front of them so they have to actually put it on the cart as they move along um I I I would say that I wouldn't say we're on Target right now with our curriculum uh for throughout the year because I think it's been a it's been a process of really learning I mean it the the prep and lesson plan time for for this year for all teachers is just unbelievable um because it's again it's something new that we're we're trying to worry about

with the kids in front of us and also the students that are are home we're trying to put together lessons where you know where they're doing uh things in the breakout room uh for our Zoom classes and things to that nature uh the teachers have really put a lot of time and effort into it and I I would say we're we're close but I I don't know if we're online right now with the curriculum like I said just because the fact of uh where we we are you know trying to catch up in our lessons um right now but again I think it's been it's been a great start to the new year and I have to say again I sent an email out tonight to parents that the students uh have really been doing

a phenomenal job really great job of wearing their masks you know again sitting in the same classroom I can't say that enough it's tough on kids but they've been Champs um you know and and and the things that they've been able to we go off a recess we take walks um all those little things that is just so such a different scene than it's been in the past at the middle school so both our students and staff have been have been Champions if you ask me and uh if you are interested Mr Renda still does those wonderful um during remote learning morning uh messages um recording with uh theatrics costumes you name it he does it and um for uh $5 we can give you a subscription to that no we can send you a

link because it's really it it really brightens your day when you see what he does in the morning um so thank you thank you Dean we appreciate that's only during Remo learning only yes well we we do have a a like a video catalog that we can send out um and now Mr Blanda and we always say the high school is different and so Mr Blanda will tell us about how different the high school is um with his 904 students sure thank you Dr Ruby um you know think I Echo what all three principles have said and what other people have said today the teachers are just it's unbelievable how hard they're working to uh try to keep Pace with the everchanging uh status of what we're doing uh the amount of hours they're putting

in um the extra things that they're doing in the building you know like bathroom and Hall Duty which is something they hadn't had to do for a very long time uh the teachers are really stepping up and and helping us with that to make sure that we can appropriately contact Trace to keep the building open as much as possible and doing all that while also learning technology and and going through and they've just been fantastic and the students um the same thing you know they certainly they I think there's an interesting dynamic between um having being in front of a teacher who knows their and they know their teachers attention is divided between them and the people on the screen um those that are virtual from home so it certainly is a challenge um but

they're getting better at it every day um they're adjusting to what it is um we absolutely have had some uh Growing Pains certainly uh I think changing from a asynchronous um perspective last year to a synchronous um model this year and the high school really being where we have to start awarding credit and give grades um becomes a little more challenging um because expectations have to be held um you know we can't continue to just um not uh provide assessments and and give kids grades so it's been it's been an adjustment period we're working through it through the end of the First Market period but it's kudos to my teachers uh to the rest of my staff um the support staff as well have been amazing um you know and the students have been just

so flexible and great they're I know they're looking forward to getting back to school tomorrow um you'll see that our total number of students obviously 904 we have that big biger bubble class uh in nth grade a little bigger our numbers do fluctuate back and forth um in terms of who's in person and who's um fully remote uh and all the different cohorts um but as you go through you see uh I can tell you in all these different sections of classes um these are based on uh total enrollment so I did not break it down by kids that are hybrid kids that are um you know in person four days or kids that are 100% remote um there's a reason for that um and that really is because at any given time if we

come back to school we really have to be able to provide for all these kids um so I really need to keep the numbers at at the typical numbers of classes of of of students that we have but you'll see from English math social studies Science World Language all the way down um those percentages are all up this year in terms of percentages that are above the guidelines of 21 uh the only one that's not up from this year is um business and that one I believe is 94 and I think last year was 95 um so we're seeing it it's it's a big building and there's a lot of space um uh not a lot of space excuse me to put put the students and so you know I've been getting a lot of

questions I think obviously um people asking well why isn't the high school ready to go back to 100% uh everybody in person and quite frankly it's because of the size of the building um we do not have the room and the space to socially distance with all the mitigation strategies needed to really get those kids in across the board um you know right now as we work to look to get um some additional students um in that have some uh certain needs whether it be because of some IEPs or 504 some um different types of um modifications and accommodations that could benefit from being in uh full four days a week we're already running into some issues with figuring out having to rotate teachers to different classrooms than they are before um to accommodate their

full load of students that are in the classroom so uh it's been a challenging time we're working through it um and I just thought throw and that's the reason why we are staying hybrid at this point in time uh because we really just don't have the space to fit all these kids and I think the the numbers show that we're where we are in terms of guidelines and expectations how many percentages are above you know 40% or above um in terms of class size so that's what I got from high school for now yeah thank you Mark and I think one of the things that's really important for us all to you know keep in the Forefront of our mind is that unlike the um the other schools like when you go into Huckleberry School

the class the classrooms are all pretty much around the same size in terms of their layout and their square footage Etc and when you go into the high school as you know the classrooms are not the same size and with the shape of the building and where things have been added on you know we have some um we have some rather small classrooms we have some uniquely shaped classrooms and um it it doesn't work out quite as as neatly as it does in a school that's kind of set up like a box um so when you look at those percentages they uh of class the class sizes that are over the guidelines and you think about um how those children were being fit into the the rooms when we weren't thinking about the things that

we're thinking now now You' go into some of those rooms where we have history or social studies classes and it would be like you know some of the classes that some of you may remember in college where you know you're all kind of squished in like sardines and maybe that wasn't okay before either but um we didn't have to worry about um public health issues like we do now and so it presents um these numbers that you're seeing on this report really um present different challenges in the context of Brookfield High School with regard to the sizes and the shapes of the um actual classrooms which is very different from um what we do deal with in in our other schools so um this is very important data for us to really um take a

look at because the percentages being higher mean a lot different um now with mitigation strategies that were required to implement for safety so are there any questions about any of the schools and the and the enrollment report Thank You For Preparing this guys I appreciate all the work that you did Dr Ruby and principles I just have to say and and and really Express to the board uh and to you my thanks um your your focus laser focus and intensity to ensure through the summer that we were ready for the fall um and and continue to be ready is admirable and uh I am just so so appreciative and so honored to be working with all of you so uh I just can't thank you enough and obviously your staffs uh that that work so

hard for each viously inspired by your leadership so thank you and I know Dr Ruby you have some more reports that go oh I can keep I have some I'll let Rosa move us along yeah we can move along um yeah so up next is the elll grade report okay so um very simply um the now we actually um checked the the data on this this is dated October 28th the other reports are dated October 1st because that's what the law is they uh the state department changed the um date for the census for El's in public school districts to November 1st and so we got this ready last week um that has to do with um the amount of time that it takes to intake students and then get testing done for qualification so

they moved it out to November 1st um if we have to adjust this because there were some kids that were tested on um the 29th and the 30th and we didn't have the results of that back yet I did speak with Kem today as of what we know now the date of October 28th this is our data these are our data so 94 students and you can see um by uh by by the different schools where these students are oh thank you Eric um that has November four oh somebody changed the date on that um and you can see 15 students at Center School 47 at Huckleberry 18 at whiner and 14 at um Brookfield High School and we currently have 14 um languages that are spoken by the um English uh Learners in the

district and we um we are servicing them the the best that we can we have a wonderful tsaw teacher and we were able to uh just recently we're hiring um two tutors and that's the that's the El report if anybody has any questions oh I will say that we're down a little bit in numbers this year and there are a variety of reasons uh for that one being the um um entry into the United States has been curtailed a bit um for people coming in from other countries with the um pandemic um we always um experience a bump of um an influx of students in January that has to do with the um differing um vacation times um typically in South American countries and when um families uh come to the United States so we

are still anticipating if you know there's no um immigration issue with regard to the pandemic that prevents that H having our usual increase in students in January and um so I think that these uh and cam feels similarly that this um slight decrease in the number of students is um somewhat artificial due to the the context of uh of the school year any questions on our El report I think a board member had asked this not too long ago but um do you have any information on if we are are still exiting students at the rate that we have been in the past couple years yes uh we actually um Kem gets a lot of Kudos with her uh her staff from the state department we um typically in the data that are looked at

um by the state department of education for the um the achievement of El's Brookfield um does very very well because even though we're not as um staffed as we would like to be uh and that we would need to be we're still working very very hard and constantly iteratively looking at our program I can tell you one thing that we've just looked at um and I give Kem all the credit for this Rosetta Stone came out with a uh a new program that's focused on English Learners learning English which is quite different from what we've been using which is what they have which was the industry standard which was you know Rosetta Stone English for people learning English but not specifically English language Learners in K12 schools and we um we looked at that and

we were targeting that as we're doing budget as you know for next year and then Kem and I were talking two weeks ago and we're like why would we wait we we have a contract with these people they should just let us transfer the contract and I said ask Kem to go and take care of that and of course they most companies always say no um so we pushed a little harder and um they're letting they're we're going to start that new program um with our students it's got uh in in all the studies that have been done on it thus far it does much better so we're constantly Rosa looking at ways that we can um provide the best support that we can given given you know our our staff and whatnot so we

we are doing well um and as soon as there we have students moving out we have more students moving in it's very fluid there's a lot there's I think that's the theme that you've been hearing tonight um that the district is very fluid um no matter what you're looking at so people are very busy all right thank you anybody else with any questions on that okay uh we can move on to the homeschool report The Homeschool report is um a report that always a little um sketchy on giving because we we have these data these are the data to the best of our knowledge um but we have a very difficult time getting this information because um by law we are required to try to track homeschool students I say this I say the same

thing every year um but parents do not ha have to to fill out these forms so um that's why the language in this report is um written as it is so it's currently with current AA currently available data we know about 35 students who are being homeschooled in the district and there's um a total of 26 families that these children come from and we have we send out the the when a parent with um has had a student that we know has been withdrawn from the school in the past and we um have an idea that they're being homeschooled um out of my office Beth sends them a letter with the appropriate form Eric is it possible to get that homeschool report up um we we send them um documentation asking them to fill it

out and we um we either don't get anything back or we get there's a a form that um some attorney provid Ides to parents uh that says by virtue of all of these laws I don't have to fill this out and then we um send them the letter again the next year and um we cannot get the data so I there's no there's no answer to um how you go about that because they do parents do not have to provide us with that information um so what we have for the 2021 school year is the 35 students and the um data on the bottom tells what grade level they're in how many students and you'll see at the at the bottom where it says not provided that's because we have five students and whose parents

filled out homeschool forms but declined to give us the grade level that the student was in so we are following the law we're following the obligations that the school district has to um capture this data and um keep track of this data but um I wouldn't I I I'm quite sure that there are more students that are that are being homeschooled people can move into Brookfield and not contact the school district and then we wouldn't know that they were being homeschooled so 35 students to the best of our knowledge based on forms that parents uh filled out for us when requested not the most report any questions on this one okay let's move on to the special services case load report thank you good evening everybody um Eric can you put that up on the

screen yeah thank you all right to start off um Center and if you could there we go um Center Elementary School um the average case load right now in the preschool is a little bit lower as Mary Rose spoke about um the enrollment is not as high and as uh K1 is at 11 five which is a little bit lower than last year which was 15 um exceptional Learning Center we have uh 12 students in that program to date Huckleberry Hill Elementary School grades two through four um the average case load is approximately 11 and again um these numbers will go up and go down as the year progresses um our exceptional Learning Center at uh Huckleberry is we have five students in that program to date and the social emotional enrichment program we also

have five students to date uh whis skaner grades five through 8 case loads are about 13 14 students um the exceptional Learning Center we have St five students in that program to date and we have nine in the social emotional enrichment program could you go to the next page for me thank you uh Brookfield High School uh 9 through 12 we have approximately 19 students um on a case load and our life skills program there to date has seven students our speech pathologists in District as you can see um their average case load is 2223 uh whis skiner is a little bit higher um and as you could see at Brookfield High School we only have one SLP there in that case load is rather large um right now that uh SLP is getting a

little support for um some testing that needs to be done for initials and triennials our school psychologist uh basic case load at Center School is about 25 Huckleberry Hill is 35 whis skaner uh we have two school psychologist there which then uh we have estimated evaluations excuse me evaluations not case load um is about 63 their case load is about 14 at Brookfield High School uh we have one school psychologist there um and as you could see that number is quite high for evaluations for triennials and initials so their case load tends to be a little bit smaller um we have the guidance Department there that does pick up a lot of the counseling students um and social skills students um Eric if you can scroll um social worker at Huckleberry uh Hill uh is

about 39 um students on their case load whis skaner uh approximately 23 and at Brookfield High School approximately 28 we do have two social workers um at Brookfield High School one who is um also attached to the social emotional enrichment program our OT um we have two o and a part-time Coda which is an OT assistant um their case load is about 45 and our PT um we have a08 in District which is her case Lo is about 34 students um and she they are districtwide does anybody have any questions I have a question sorry go ahead de can you just go back one page to the school psychologist section um Gina if you could just explain um the difference between the case load and the evalu anticipated evaluations I think it said yep the

school at the you're talking at the high school Debby okay at the high school um the school psychologist since we only have one school psychologist there um they do the um initial and trienal evaluations um there have been several occasions where we will pull other school psychologists from District to support that school psychologist at the high school with some testing um that's why the case load tend to be a little bit smaller because um there is only one school psychologist there but the uh guidance Department um and social workers uh do pick up the counseling load so what I'm trying to understand is if the evaluations are different students than the numbers that we see in the case loads are the case loads like ongoing students that they see and the evaluations are sort of

onetime evaluations they're not ongoing exactly your triennials are every three years so it really depends on what cycle the student is on and then there are initials okay thanks you're welcome Gina could you tell us if uh any of these um case loads or the number of evaluations that um a professional would have to do is significantly higher than you know what you'd like or is it just the one with the asteris um when I when you look at the speech and language um at the high school that case load is quite High and um last year we did get support for her to do some of the services this year um we have someone who's coming in and doing some of the evaluations because with that size case load um it can be difficult

to do your test testing initial evaluations trianal um and that's something that we're looking at in the budget for next year okay any other questions okay uh let's R yeah Rosa if I if I may just to just to sum this this whole section up and and thank you Gina and thank you Dr Ruby and principles for going through all of that there's obviously a lot of data there that was presented tonight and and like almost all of our decisions if not all of our decisions we we look at you know uh strong rationale for what we need to do for our students whatever it might be whether that's that's research um immediate experience uh need to be responsive to new mandates or state law uh but also data and I mean these reports we

provide annually right at this time because just like having the budget Round Table this evening and so forth prior to this meeting th this data as Gina just alluded to with that specific question about the SLP at the high school this we take a look at State guidelines for case loads um obviously look we look at Compares and we look how we are able to deliver for our students and the programs for each of our students and do we have the right amount of staff and we try to match that up with our budget process so I just want to make sure that everybody understands we don't just do these reports to do these reports for the board they actually have a very serious function in developing our budget which is the basically as we

always say the financial statement uh of our values and what we're trying to do for our program and our resources for the kids so that was what I just wanted to sum it up with for you Rosa thank you thank you and I I just want to add I was um at a state meeting um today and it was the discussion of uh really focused around social emotional um uh health of students and one of the things that um the superintendents and assistant superintendents that were in this meeting were um addressing was the um it was kind of a caution like really keep your finger on and I haven't talked to you about this Gina because I was there this afternoon um but really to keep your finger on the pulse of um the counseling

needs of students uh that are related to um the situation that we're we all ourselves in because um the caution was to really think about whether you had sufficient social workers they were focusing on to deal with things that are coming up right now and to and it was like the word caution was used to be thinking about what you need so that you don't get caught short with students who are presenting with problems that are related to isolation um and etc etc uh and that's something that we we really need to be looking at what are we we seeing as kids are coming back to school and we're really working on those relationships and listening to what they're telling us and making sure that we're not just pushing things to the side and keeping

track of um the need for counseling services and support services thank you okay um we can move on uh to the to item e brofield public School Equity vision statement approval okay I am going to make a motion that the board adopt the following language as its Equity vision statement for the Brookfield Public Schools Brookfield Public Schools honors the uniqueness of each individual and Embraces diverse backgrounds values and points of view to build a unified safe and welcoming School community that empowers students and prepares them for lives in a Multicultural Society we believe it is our responsibility to seek out and address biases and ensure achievement regardless of gender gender identity sexual orientation race class religious beliefs or disability can I get a second second Thanks Jen okay so just for everybody that's listening um

this was a statement that was developed um a couple weeks ago at our board retreat um and that is AA ailable if anybody wants to go check out the video to that that should be up on the YouTube um Channel as well so uh is there any other discussion questions or comments on this okay so all in favor I thank you that is unanimous all right um thanks everyone for your hard work on that on to Old business uh we have a policy okay I will move that the board approve policy number 41182 37 41.8 face coverings face mass and coverings for a final reading as recommended by the policy and Communications subcommittee the first reading was October 7th 2020 second thanks Joy okay any um discussion Debbie did you get any comments or edits

on this uh I believe Bob has a comment or an edit to make Bob if you want to just go over that it's just a rather mechanical thing is on the fourth page which is noted on the page with the letter D probably about 90% of the way down you'll see a parenthetical comment that says alternate position the district will provide suitable blah blah blah and it looks like the um cave had you know given us an option there and I think I think reading it I just think we ought to delete that alternate position parenthetical uh thanks for catching that the the statement that follows is appropriate but the alternate uh position should not be there so that should be taken out thank you okay okay thank you that was good catch so so

John just so I'm clear it's both it's the if a visitor refuses to wear a face covering it may be denied and the district will provide suitable face covering we'll have both statements in there yeah we because we we have enough that um on The Limited times that we actually have visitors that we could provide uh mask you know people might just forget but certainly if somebody refuses then they will be denied any yeah so I would uh if everybody's okay I would make a is W okay with that yeah so we just take out the parentheses and the words alternate position correct correct and so I will make a motion I will make a motion to amend the motion on the table to remove the open the parentheticals at the uh at the bottom

of p uh page D and delete the words alternate position colon I have a second on that a second thanks Amy okay so all in favor of the amendment I okay thank you that's unanimous um for any further discussion on this policy as a whole okay so we can go ahead and vote all those in favor I I a really good it's a really well written policy by the way I thought okay up next we have the new school project update and U we just have two small updates for that I just want to remind board members and anyone listening um that we will have a um board members should attend the NBC meeting on I think it's a it's Tuesday the 17th um it is the 17th at 7M um that's where techtown will

sort will present um the final designs we're going to vote to essentially close this uh phase and move forward to construction so um the project is still slated to go out to bid in December so that's uh that's the update on that and uh Mike is going to be meeting with the naming committee for the new school tomorrow right that's correct also as well as de Debbie Brooks great all right so um I think that that's it for the new school um so everybody just sort of stay tuned I guess to the for the next update and uh we can move on to three main points definitely our Equity vision statement right and the Huckleberry Spotlight I'd say for sure hle great and then I was thinking just sort of a summary of Dr brill's
