i like the blue and you're uh romeo rosa ah thanks go ahead rosa okay uh good evening everyone today is wednesday november 4th and i called the budget round table of the brookfield board of education to order we have i think all of our board members on i think i saw mike joining yep so we have all of our board members in attendance um so let's stand for the pledge i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all okay so our only action item tonight uh is to accept questions and comments from the public on the 21 22 budget um we have a couple of people that are on the line and generally

um before we started live streaming bob was sort of giving a summary of how these things usually go but we give the public an opportunity to give us some feedback what they feel should be a priority in next year's school budget and we just kind of work through it in in your round table fashion so if any member from the public uh has a comment or a question that they would like to ask you can go ahead and unmute and actually i think there's only one number so the number ending in 927 um you can go ahead and unmute if you have a question or a comment i think he said earlier that he didn't have any was that the same number okay okay so i guess we'll um for anybody that's listening from the

public uh generally the board doesn't present anything at these round tables it's more of a gathering of information um in the discussion point so it's a little more interactive if there's no one from the public that's gonna join we'll we'll hang out for for a little bit just to give everyone an opportunity and then we will probably just adjourn so that we can have a little time before our regular meeting tonight so rosa and john i'm wondering if i know we don't usually do a presentation but and i'm not suggesting that but maybe if if john you could sort of just walk through the steps that happen after this so if anybody's watching the live stream they know um you know we have this round table then what happens next and how does the budget

get created after this point maybe that would be helpful to people sure dev i can do that probably sum it up pretty quick um so we we start in on by october 1 mr post our director of finance and operations sends out a memo with a with a framework and format for our building principles and our department heads to start developing their budget and thinking about their priorities for the coming year um it goes without saying that that we're very focused on our strategic plan and our guiding goals that the board said years ago and that we continue to work on and adjust you know each and every year as we uh as we talk about being adaptable and flexible and responsive to student needs and so that gets the that is at a point

now where the principles of actually in the department have submitted their budgets um i think as of early last week and we have um the central office team which is dr ruby and ken post and myself we'll be meeting with each principal or department head uh over the next uh thursday and friday actually after tonight so that's why it's important that we get input from the public um and certainly there's input that comes in through email or phone conversations or visits in the community you hear from people so it always is informing the context in which we work so we will be going through embedding uh the the principles and department head budgets over the next couple of days and really trying to understand ask a lot of questions what are the goals um new

ideas new initiatives being innovative for student programming and so forth or long-term needs that maybe we haven't been able to fulfill yet through the budget process and then we use the next month to check in with the finance committee and let them know kind of how things are progressing uh and then like bob was saying to the gentleman who was talking with us right before we went live uh as of december 2nd i think it falls on this year which is the first regular meeting in december i take all that information with the team and it's prioritized into a probably a 20 slide power point that we present as the proposal from the superintendent to the board for next year's budget and you know our aligned resources and what we're looking for and then from

there uh we'll meet with the finance committee uh in interim step uh in in early december and then again with the board uh prior to the winter break uh to go through questions and ideas and start vetting the budget we do that after the holiday break and through january we have another public forum to mr belden's point that he brought up where we have more input from the community um because now they've had a chance to see what those those priorities and budget assumptions are as we work through and then by the end of january we actually have to submit the budget to mr dunn uh that's by town charter january 30th 31st yeah depending on you know where the where the weekday falls and then from there it goes through the very lengthy board

selectmen board of finance process and we have a number of joint meetings throughout the late winter uh into the early spring as we finalize the budget process and then go to referendum sometime in may so i hope that was uh a brief enough summary deb for a eight month process no i think i think that's helpful great so i haven't seen anybody else join i don't know when we started this live stream but i think it was you know a few minutes ago what's the feeling you guys seven minutes ago yeah you guys wanna keep it going a little bit longer you think it's safe to sort of well i don't think anybody else is going to show up to tell you the truth so but i would urge everybody who might see this brief

live stream if they do have input please send it to boe at brookfields.org.org right um and uh because we'd love to get everybody's input as we're evaluating the budget because that's what it's all about as a board we're trying to represent the the needs of other community right as we engage with dr barrel and the entire team here and uh always useful to have input from uh from parents and other members of the public on things we should be thinking about and we take them seriously anybody else with a comment board members all right um so without objection this meeting is adjourned and i will see you guys in a little bit for our regular meeting you
