[Music] up there when that turn and looking at a corner good evening good evening everyone today is Wednesday June 5th 2019 and I call the regular meeting of the Board of Education to order okay we are seeing a six of our board members this evening Eve is on vacation and this is a really really great one of my favorite board meetings I believe because there are so many wonderful things that happen during it and first we would like to recognize our teachers of the year and for Brookfield high school we have Ernesto Davila we're whisking here we have Marci boon huckleberry it's Molly prizeo in for Center elementary school our teacher of sentiment elementary school is also our teacher of the district and that's Samantha Hannon [Applause] we also have some staff members of the
year as well Center elementary school it's michelle veteran Oh huckleberry we have Deb barber Otis whisker near Patricia Lynch Brookfield high school Diane Holmes and our town school office Joan Reynolds okay and now we're moving on to our top 11 graduates of Brookfield High School and for that I'm going to turn it over to principal Blanda ha ha thank you mrs. Sturm um I'll have one of them explain the shirt really it I don't do it justice because I don't match the correct gender you'll understand why but it's my pleasure certainly to introduced the top 11 students of the graduating class of 2019 we just finished our what do we call it the top 10/11 you know honors dinner tonight where we invited staff to come to the meeting to the dinner excuse me our
students actually serve dinner to their parents and to the staff that they invited there was just a wonderful evening and we're very excited to get in front of you and talk so they they look a little nervous right because I have warned them there will be some questions being asked so in no particular order I guess I'll start here and work my way down so I'll introduce our top 11 students so we're gonna start with Sadie smart Sadie [Applause] Sadie why don't you start with where you plan on attending college and what you plan on studying if you know so my name is Sadie smart I'm going to swathmore college which is a liberal arts school just outside of Philly and as of now I'm planning on doing something with English history with the idea
of going to law school maybe after college great what was your favorite class in all of high school um probably okay class wise either a peeler or AP lying because I adore writing and I love you know reading and looking at different texts and like understanding you know different cultures and ideas through like the books we've read and I love expressing myself through my essays but my favorite like kind of class will have to be Writing Center because I also enjoy helping people through brightening as well any other questions so my question for you is when you meet someone from outside of Brookfield what is it you tell them about Brookfield schools that is most memorable I tell them I think about the opportunities we have at Brookfield are like especially for my you know
the path I chose are definitely our wide variety of AP classes available to us that I know a lot of students that I've met outside of Brookfield like haven't had access to and I tell them about you know the teachers I've had that I've really enjoyed like pushed me in those classes to become a better student a better person cool right any other questions Thank You Sadie congratulations all right now I know to expect next up is Rachel Lee hi everyone I'm Rachel and next year I'm going to Johns Hopkins University to study biomedical engineering and I might go to law school I know most influential teacher in all of your your school so far I'd say it would be either mrs. Crean or mr. Rhinehart I don't know if they're here sir but they
both really inspired me to continue my interests in math and science and reading which I know they seem opposites but they help me continue both of those interests and I'm really thankful for that right okay you just keep being silent I've got coming up with a very good question so thinking back on high school what was most different than what you expected when you arrived in ninth grade Ickes so I expected that this might be like a stereotype from books and TV and everything but I sort of thought that it would be harder to get around and like make friends and everything but that definitely wasn't true and I have way more friends I did before and now I can I feel like I'm comfortable just talking to anybody and I feel like they will
all just not judge me and appreciate me for who I am and same with everyone else so I think that's something I really like about Brookfield as well come up Emily next up is Emily divorce set someone asked hard to not only introduce yourself would explain the origin of the colors lilac t-shirt that I'm wearing hi I'm Emily divorce 'its I'm attending Northeastern next year to also study biomedical engineering um so the t-shirts I honestly love t-shirts so the second that we found out that it was all all females I was like guys we got to make a t-shirt so we're almost all of us I think 9 out of 11 of us are in the same AP government class so one class we had a sub we all huddled around my computer we designed
this on the front it says she believes she could so she did which we felt was like an appropriate quote for our achievement and then on the back it says 11 out of 10 and it has all her names in alphabetical order [Music] I'm curious how you think your extracurricular activities helped or got you to the point that you are now how did they play into your high school years um I feel like my extracurriculars really taught me how to be a leader um I play soccer I run indoor and outdoor track and ever since my sophomore year I was always felt like I was in charge I guess I would help weed stretches and looking up to the seniors help me realize what a leader should be and leading not only on the field
and on the track but I've seen myself leading in the classroom so extracurriculars definitely taught me how to be the best leader I could be so think about your high school career and who was the most influential person to you individually that's not a teacher or administrator the most influential person was definitely my track coach coach but he's been with me since freshman year I've run for him for eight seasons he's that person that you just immediately connect with he's always cracking jokes he comes up to my lunch table every single day to tell me a new joke he's been with me through every injury that I've had he texts me about all my surgeries he's like just making sure I'm okay he can tell when I'm not having the best season when I'm getting
down and on about myself and he just recognizes me as a person and not just an athlete but me next up top 11 is Josie let see hi guys I'm Josie let's see and I'm going to Wake Forest University in North Carolina any specific major or oh I'm undecided right now but I'm sure I'll figure it out so we have um some young adults watching as we speak who I know of and what advice would you give to them what important advice would you give to them to be successful to kind of reach where you are at now I would have to say I feel like the word is kind of overused but like or the phrase like finding your passion and really going after it and really not letting any challenges discourage you and
using those challenges to like push you to be better and to be your best self and to just always keep improving on yourself and I feel like in high school you have a lot of opportunities for that with the classes you take the extracurriculars you do and you can really by pushing yourself and finding your passions you can find who you truly are could you tell us about what you were really passionate about um well I think I started to find out what being passionate meant when I did I did volleyball for the first time in my freshman year and just kind of jumping into something that I had never really done before it was really scary and but I found a group of people who I know I will be friends with for probably
the rest of my life and the memories that come with that the fact that I can look back on those memories and really see myself grow and progress and look forward to making new memories in the future I feel like that is passion like appreciating what you've done in the past and also looking forward to the future and being excited and driven to see the results not even halfway there yet but next up we have Cameron Schilling Cameron [Applause] hello my name is Cameron Schilling I'm not going to college next fall I'm going to be pursuing a gap year where I plan to get a full-time job as well as an internship at a local art studio but going forward I plan to major in graphic design once the next year has passed and I've
been admitted to a college it's great what would you say your favorite extracurricular was I would have oh oh no this is hard you can say to if you don't want to vote anyone off the island very close between Key Club and 4-h and kind of because they have fairly similar aims but both of them have been leadership and community service groups that for each I've been with since I was seven so that's the better part of my life and then Key Club I joined freshman year and I don't know if they both really helps me get involved in the community and meeting people and doing things that I wouldn't normally do and they've really helped build me as like a speaker and as a leader which believe me I really wasn't when I first
got into them I think I owe a lot of my growth to them and I really enjoyed being a part of them that's great so if you were sitting in our chairs and trying to figure out what to do next with our schools what advice would you give us or what invite what actions would you take to make Brookfield even better so it might be obvious but I have a very heavy slant towards the arts and I do think it's I think it's important to really make it more visible to the rest of these students just making it making art something that's a lot more accessible and that's a lot more supported because why do you think Brookfield supports the Arts better than a lot of other schools from what I've heard at least it's
still hard it's still hard to go into the higher arts classes from what I've heard other schools I've other schools have a lot of prep for the AP course we didn't have an AP course this year that was actually held and I think it would really help to just boost the arts a little bit because a lot of kids that I know really care about it and that's what what they're passionate about and that's what they want to spend their life on and I feel like it's hard to get resources it's hard to find resources especially in the guidance office that really know exactly where you're going thank you I did notice mark was back there taking notes yeah it's great and tomorrow night we actually have from 5:00 to 7:00 at central office at
town hall they're actually doing a senior art show a little display tomorrow from 5:00 to 7:00 so I'm sure Cameron will be involved in that as well and she is not in your head yes next up we have Olivia Capel hi everyone my name is Olivia Capel as mr. Miranda said and I will be attending Connecticut College in New London and I'm planning on making hit majoring in history and if possible to do a double major with political science what is sorry what would be one word the first word that comes to your mind that would describe your key to success um I think for me it was really confidence I have just kind of always I've been one of the few people who's really known what I've wanted to do and anything I've kind
of put my efforts into I've never done things halfway and even if I was scared or unsure of the results it never stopped me from doing it and no matter the situation I've always kind of put on the brave face and made sure I presented myself in the best light so I'm a fellow history major so I got excited when you said that so what is it that you love about history or is there something in particular that really interest you um for me I actually in my fourth grade classroom I didn't realize yet that I wanted to do history way back when but I used to use the free time to read the Declaration off the walls in my classroom and I've always just been really amazed by what our founding fathers did and
all the things that they accomplished so u.s. history and more specifically Revolutionary War type era is really my passion and ultimately I hope to be Supreme Court Chief Justice I never felt more inadequate up next Claire Hickey hi my name is Claire hanky I will be attending Franklin and Marshall College it's a small liberal arts school outside of Wright in Lancaster Pennsylvania and I will be majoring in business with a concentration in accounting I have what made you decide on that particular school oh I loved the area around it when I was looking at schools I knew I kind of wanted a school that was like in a town area and I thought that Lancaster was absolutely beautiful and academics as well because it's a liberal arts school I really value getting a well-rounded education
I don't want to just take courses in business because I feel like it's important to obtain knowledge from other places as well I want to be knowledgable in history and math and science so I felt that the curriculum there would really be to my benefit in terms of my goals for academics so just out of curiosity what years did you attend Brookfield schools all thirteen or so that goes to my question so think before high school right what was your most influential teacher as you're coming through the elementary schools I'll even include the middle school um my second grade teacher her name was Miss Sullivan I loved her um she was so nice to me and I really like found the niche kind of in math specifically in her class I remember doing like math
books and she would get mad at me for going ahead because I just really wanted to keep going and I wanted to learn more and now math is still one of my passions and that's why I'm planning to do accounting as well as because it's aneasha of my interest in business and in math so I really liked her she's also very nice thank you congratulations up next Danielle Katz hi my name is Danielle Katz I'm going to UConn where I'm going to be studying American Sign Language and history so what was your favorite class not part of your like intended major I really enjoyed my band classes I've taken band the actual class for three years I'd to independence to get one year and I involved in a ton of band extracurriculars thinking I'm running
out of question so so here's a question about this group here you all seem to be pretty close to one another having fun have you all been in classes together for most of the time and how do you what do you attribute their like Emily mentioned we're nine out of the eleven of us were on the same AP gov class and it's a really fun class always people are really hard workers but they also have other priorities outside of school like they're all really involved in extracurriculars and sports and they have like hanging with good friends a lot I don't know we all focus on school but also let ourselves relax sometimes we're refreshed for school thank you up next is Haley Oh Sica hi my name is Haley osika I'm going to Vassar College
next year in Poughkeepsie New York I'm majoring in biology hopefully to become a genetic counselor Wow what genetic counselor right genetic counselor is so a geneticist runs more of the in-depth tasks about the genomics and that kind of thing a genetic counselor does karyotyping and helps a family cope with a diagnosis and know what to do next cool that's why that's an emerging field I think yeah what are you gonna miss most about Brookfield um definitely specifically from the high school the Writing Center because I spend a ton of time there throughout the day during school and mrs. Linzer is definitely a role model for a lot of us here so it's just a safe space and somewhere that I go to kind of de-stress and also help others and do some service community service
up next is Elizabeth Carrizo hello I'm Elizabeth Cruz oh I'm going to University of Connecticut and I'm studying biomedical engineering that seems to be sort of a popular trend that yeah yeah what is it about do you think particularly about the high school your coursework that contributed to that particular interest um well I've I'm like a very like I love science is my favorite subject and I took like a lot of the science classes that the high school has to offer and they all kind of just like fueled my passion for science and personally I originally wanted to be some sort of doctor but then I also like math and I took a lot of the math classes at the high school as well and the math department in the science department they have wonderful
teachers that I've made very good relationships with as well so that kind of pushed me to like combine them both to be biomedical engineering because that's kind of just like a mix of the math and the science and the medical aspect that I had from like prior to coming to high school it's not how do you balance your academics for your sports life um well I did sports my freshman year and I did like lacrosse and field hockey and then my sophomore year I didn't play any sports because I took a very heavy course load and then my junior year my senior year I played just golf which is very very like relaxing and kind of sport that like you're really only competitive with yourself although you're playing on a team but you're kind of
just pushed to be competitive with yourself which was something that like like was something that I wanted to do because I'm very competitive with myself to keep learning you like keep doing better so I didn't really have that much of an issue balancing each of them my coaches were like very very understanding and they knew that like I prioritize academics and everything like that so it was it was good rounding out the top 11 Claire lemon hi I'm Claire Lennon I'm going to the University of Vermont next year on majoring in secondary education math with concentrations and special ed and coaching so you believed you could and you did but was there a point when you believed you couldn't was there class or a team or something you wanted to quit and just throw up
your hands and say I just can't do this absolutely yeah um so I think I started liking math back in seventh grade that was like when I realized how much I loved it but algebra 2 was really difficult for me and also I think that was that was freshman year and that was just like a tough year kind of acclimating and stuff and I think just with all of my courses all together it was definitely really hard for me and I was like I don't know if this is the right subject for me um I don't know like I feeling too much stress from school but um my parents were really good and they helped me to realize like I didn't need to put so much pressure on myself and honestly after I finally figured
that out not freshman year but later on that's kind of what made me go back into being like oh yeah I do love this subject it doesn't matter I don't have to just because I'm going into it I don't need one hundreds and everything and that was just really helpful so it was really thanks to my mom and dad who are out there because they helped me a lot with that I wish my twelve-year-old daughter was here I'm sort of kicking myself out don't even bring her cuz I'm so inspired by all these young women okay but I'll show it to her so what would you say to your 12 year old self based on your experience now what sort of advice would you give yourself thinking back it's 12 it says a sixth grade
yeah okay um so this kind of goes off of what I was just saying but I would definitely say not to put as much pressure on yourself um I think that it's more important to enjoy yourself during high school um like I said before freshman year I put so much pressure on myself see my sophomore year kind of junior year and not to like these sad sounding but it just like I wasn't very happy all that time I was just super stressed out on my mom and dad know I was coming home just doing coming home doing homework that's all I was doing and then junior year and senior year I realized like it's okay I'm still going to my number one college like right now I got into it which is great I'm doing
exactly what I want to do I haven't met anything that like I haven't been able to do because I haven't put so much pressure myself and I've just been so much happier and so for me it's just like I think that there's so much pressure right now on everybody to take 17 ApS or whatever it is and like for me this year I just took I didn't take as many as I could've because I just didn't need to and that wasn't what was going to make me happy and so I've just been so much happier this year so I would say opening just want to congratulate you all again and I am so enormous ly proud and impressed on all of you you know the the scope and breadth of interest and not only that
but I think Bob touched on it before you all seem to lift each other up and and because of that you're all better for it and so congratulations again this is so well deserved we also would like to thank someone else and that is our senior rep you are our class representative for this entire year we've so appreciated you here Maddie so thank you very much okay now I believe we are going to take a brief recess for cake and so we're gonna take a brief recess in the meeting fur boy [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] okay we are back from recess thank
you everyone it was a wonderful way to start the board meeting and next on the agenda is public comment we have no one signed up is there anyone here that would like to speak hearing none we will move on to the student representative report hi everyone the square is coming to an end so here's what BHS students have been up to as of today there is one leak one week left until classes are over and final exams begin and for our seniors it's our last week of high school as most of us are exempt from our final exams Monday night we had our senior academic awards where certain students were awarded scholarships and recognized for their academic achievements and last night we had our Center athletic awards for all the senior varsity athletes are recognized
and their awards given out at their awards given out to most of our athletes as this year comes to a close I would like to thank the board for this opportunity to represent the students and say good luck to all of the rest of the students on their journey ahead thank you and next we have written correspondence hey Ron Jaffe regarding the new school project the Connecticut report card and a school based peer-to-peer suicide prevention program andrea feresten regarding bus transportation and Marissa flurry regarding her resignation thank you moving on we have approval of Board minutes recommend a motion that the board approved the minutes listed below as recommended the regular meeting on May 15 2000 19 second discussion just a correction that it is the fifteenth I think the agenda does say the first
but that's for the 15th right all in favor and that moves us to the superintendent's update Thank You missus sure so in the report will be very brief considering our packed evening tonight so I wanted to update regarding the new school project I know the board is aware of this Lauren I'm sure the public knows that Friday May 24th the Friday right before the Memorial Day weekend we were able to submit the grant the to the office of school construction for that 22 percent reimbursement grant from the state forward the new school project so we're very excited about that there was actually some correspondence and some clarification which was the purpose of getting it in five weeks early before the June 30th deadline as part of the construction grant we actually met with Homeland Security
they came down and I have to thank chief Purcell for helping facilitate liaison with the with Doug Pesci who was the rep from Homeland Security he gave us a full report not only on all four schools commendations and some recommendations and enhancements that we can consider in addition to that he has some input in working with our conceptual design for the new school project and so that's been submitted to the grant office as well so we're really excited about that and since we have the security task force meeting next Friday I'll be able to share that report with with the committee so we're excited about that there's been some questions about design phase with the new school project and so I wanted everybody to know and I think it goes to one of the correspondents
that the joy was just mentioning the we've posted on the Facebook page for the new school project and the regular Facebook page we've also posted on the new school project website as well as a regular website an update on the design phase and the public's opportunity for input regarding the design phase and having an opportunity to meet with the architects and things like that that will be this fall the dates aren't scheduled yet but we're working on that in addition to that have the final new final installment of the new the district newsletter that's going out perhaps tomorrow afternoon we'll see if we can get it ready and in there I have it I have that there as well in addition to that I've sent that information to mr. Dunn and his assistant Jenny and
that will be in the July spotlight that the town does so it so it's already posted on our official sites it'll be in the newsletter in school messaged home and then it'll be in the July spotlight for the town so to make sure everybody knows that there will be an opportunity and it also explains the schedule of the design phase and how that works because for most people we're post referendum and they think well you just go design the school they don't realize it's it's almost a 12-month process to design a school so there's a lot that goes into that we lay that out so that's what I have on the new school project I wanted to turn it over to Ken there's some state budget information that's been solidified so if Ken could share
it affects the town sure it affects Brookfield by reducing the education cost sharing grant by about ninety four thousand dollars from this this year's level however the board selectmen Board of Finance had already built in a larger reduction so it actually works out that we're a hundred and sixty thousand dollars to the good on education cost sharing grant and they also took out the provision in the budget where the towns and cities would have to pay a portion of the teacher retirement plan and the town had budgeted about $130,000 for that so all in all that's for this year coming here it's good news so quite quite positive I think the conservative budgeting that we were all involved in was very helpful going forward and then I have one more thing it's not on my
report but it was publicized today so I want to make sure I share it it's not it's not one of the data points we often talk about but our four schools have kitchens that serve lunch and they are included in the health inspections that the health inspector does here in Brookfield of the 80 or so food establishments that we have in town all four of our schools had one percent perfect ratings so that's a credit Alfonzo and his team to the work they do is making sure not only the food has become delicious over the last few years it's actually incredibly safe and the reason I want to mention that tonight make sure the public in Harris is that the News Times had a very nice article it mentioned three of the schools huckleberry hadn't
had their visit until today and so we just got the results this afternoon of huckleberry so all four schools had a perfect rating and that's all I have does anyone have any question that's a great way sure is I just wanted to clarify and Ken thank you for those numbers but the 160,000 that is good from our budget and the 130 with the teacher pension even though it's an educational cost sharing it really goes to the town so it's not money that we can apply back to our budget just for anyone listening here it is good news for the entire town definitely and I know the Board of Finance already has had preliminary discussion I think at the past Board of Finance meaning how to apply that either the general fund or budgets going forward
perhaps so they I know they'll be talking about that to determine that thanks for clarifying that and that's all I have thank you thank you next we have the subcommittee reports Finance for the subcommittee reports no I'm sorry in the wrong section all right so Finance Committee who had a very short meeting on May 13th it lasted 20 minutes and I thought was that because I wasn't there yes I think you know absolutely because you weren't there and because they bound and gagged me in any case it the the primary discussion we had was on how we're doing on this year's budget and in terms of landing the ship here and we're gonna lay on the ship relatively well this year we've had and I'm just gonna recap this for people who are listening we
have had some exposures that we haven't planned on in the areas of substitutes we have a lot more substitute costs than we've had I come back to that in a second and on some special education at it cost for transportation and professional services we've been able to handle those because we've under one on Sowers and that is connected as you can imagine to the substitutes because some of it was people who were taking longer-term leave of absence and so we were saving on the salary line but spending on the substitute line but we also froze some hiring positions and we froze some certain supplies but it will allow us to land within and I think Ken you're pretty confident that we'll be able to land it relatively handling yes okay so and other than that
we had some general conversations about how we're closing the books each month and mr. post and mrs. Marion our town control are working together on an initiative that will make things work more smoothly which i think is great and that's pretty much it so any questions once on the committee want to add next we have policy okay so the policy and communications committee met last on May 15th and there are three policies from the 3000 series that we are a little probably a little more than halfway through which is quite an achievement I would say but there are three policies from that series that you'll see later on on the agenda there is another one that on transportation that we're going to take a deeper look at and just take a deeper discussion about it
we also discussed starting 4000 series this is the personnel series our policies are pretty much out of date and not really in line with with law so we're looking at taking caves entire 4000 series doing a review of it and then hopefully just adopting the entire thing as a series and really that will just you know and most of this stuff is not really it's not like the other policies where there's a lot of it's mostly straightforward and legal stuff so we will be looking at that at our next meeting or starting to look at that or next meeting in terms of communication dr. Brill spoke about a newsletter and next year we will be able to have promotional videos in addition to the newsletter service which will be pretty exciting and there's some really
cool features that he discussed about that and that was pretty much it other than you know the policies that will hear about later any questions for Rosa thank you next we have the consent agenda recommend a motion that the board approve the items on the consent agenda is recommended new hires resignations retirements transfers second any discussion comments I'd like to thank Mary Romano and graduate around the retirement kiddin all in favor aye post passes moving on to new business we have the healthy food beverage certification recommend a motion pursuant to CGS Section 10 2 F 2 1 5 F the board of education certifies that all food items offered for sale to students in the schools under its jurisdiction and not exempt from Connecticut nutrition standards published by the Connecticut State Department of Education will
comply with the Connecticut nutrition standards during the period of July 1st 2018 through June 30th 2019 the certification shall include all food offered for sale to students separately from reimbursable meals at all times and from all sources including but not limited to school stores vending machines school cafeterias and any fundraising activities on school premises sponsored by the school or by non school organizations and groups second so we're gonna need to get you some water to make any motions okay did you want a that was pretty clear from what joy said but did you want to add basically this is certifying that that we any sales we make outside of the regular reimbursable meals in the cafeteria will comply to the same standards that we have to comply with for those meals and the state for
adopting these motions the state reimburses us an additional ten cents per meal into our lunch fund which adds up to about sixteen thousand five hundred dollars per year yeah and these are just the standard motions that we go through every single years yes this is language that they dictate to us that we have to use and cannot change any further discussion all in favor aye aye opposed okay you ready for the next so recommend a motion that the Board of Education will allow the sale to students of food items that do not meet the Connecticut nutrition standards provided that the following conditions are met one the sales in connection with an event occurring after the end of the regular school day or on the weekend number two the sales at the location of the event
and number three the food items are not sold from a vending machine or school store an event is an occurrence that involves more than just a regularly scheduled practice meaning or extracurricular activity for example soccer games school plays and interest scholastic debates are events but soccer practices play rehearsals and debate team meetings are not the regular school day is the period from midnight before to 30 minutes after the end of the official school day location means where the event is being held second so I think that was pretty self especially it gives us an exception for you know a concession stand at the football games and things like that and the next motion will be the exact same thing for beverages okay good then all in favor aye aye opposed okay hey beverage exemption recommended
motion that the Board of Education will allow the sale to students of beverages not listed in Section 10 - 2 - 1 Q of the Connecticut General Statutes provided that the following conditions are met number 1 the sales and connection within the event occurring after the end of the regular school day or on the weekend number 2 the sales of the location of the event and number 3 the beverages are not sold from a vending machine or school store an event is in the currents that involves more than just a rarely scheduled practice meaning or extracurricular activity the school day is a period from midnight before to 30 minutes after the end of the official school day location means where the event is being held and must be the same place as the food sales
second pretty self-explanatory any questions or discussions all in favor aye opposed great thank you and now much shorter motion we can move on to the food service contract extension recommended motion that the board approved the extension of the Woodsen's food service contract for the 2019 2020 school year as recommended by director of business and operations can post you during the year 1516 the board was required to do an RFP for food service the contract and it was awarded to Wits ins at the time the award is typically for five years with a series of one-year renewals the renewal they're voting on tonight would be for a year for our deal with with Witten's I think you had a copy in your back and again the language is is pretty much dictated by the state and
this and a bunch of other documents had to be sent to the state for approval to the board to act I [Applause] is there anything significantly changed from prior no the fee increases are in line with the the 3% which is what the state told us was that the CPI used any other questions discussions all in favor aye opposed I think we didn't dare about that down after a perfect perfect that's top 11:10 dinner tonight was mega okay we'll be on to policies our first is policy 35 34 and 40 officer bonds recommend a motion that the board approved policy number 35 34 employee officer bonds for first reading as recommended by the policy subcommittee second okay so this policy you'll see the one that's has the strikeout that's speed Brookfield policy that was last
updated in 92 the new policy which has a different number is 35 34 that is from cabe and the suggestion of the committee is to replace Brookfield's with the caves it's obviously very short it's only one sentence but there is obviously that the difference in terms of the amount for the bond and we are doing more than that correct as operationally so this is three five three it's replacing three five three three yes okay any other questions could I recommend the mending the motion to specifically say that we will be eliminating three five three three so can we say that that will replace yes replacing 35:33 which will be withdrawn so recommend a motion that the board approve policy number 35 34 to replace policy number 35 33 employee officer bonds for first reading as
recommended by the policies of money second [Music] any other questions that was good clarification well I just you know it just gets you a record for those yeah there was one morning what we have to vote on the amendment yep all in favor aye toast 3540 2.45 recommend a motion that the board approved policy number thirty-five forty 2.45 vending machines for first reading as recommended by the processor second okay so kind of actually the same somewhat same story with this one this is going to be a que policy it's replacing a brookfield policy and the numbers do change slightly just it's still three five four - but it's not 0.33 and so two point four five Fuli a [Music] oh I got it otherwise oh and the title actually of the new policy is somewhat
differences now it's me food food sales other than National School Lunch Program instead of vending machines so we probably need to amend the motion to reflect that as well okay so recommend a motion that the board approve policy number thirty five forty two point three three booths it to replace no that's correct yep yeah food sales other than National School Lunch Program in place of thirty five forty 2.45 vending machines for first reading as recommended by the policy subcommittee second all Flair joy you only thought the hard part was did that's right okay any other for the discussion on that one I'll just say when you're reading through this that cave policies there but they gave you options and so they left the strike outs and there so you can see what decisions we were
making so what I read against it will be kind of clear or what we were thinking that's something which I thought was hopeful okay on the favor I post and 31:52 [Music] recommend a motion that the board approved policy number 31 52 spending public funds for advocates advocacy for a first reading as recommended by the policy subcommittee second so this policy is a new policy from cave it's mainly deals with the the public fund I guess the disbursement of public funds for advocacy for referendums that we have so it will explicitly stay how we are to use funds anything anywhere from talking to the press on social media so the strikeouts are the committee's suggestions for for removal so that it's Brookfield specific yeah some of the strikeouts work because they included language for regional
districts and in some languages that you'll see when you see the strikeouts they talk about what the town and city can do and we didn't feel that was a pertinent for school board policy right and so with those are the two reasons for strikeouts they were pretty straightforward any other questions all in favor post-interview guys um the we're gonna meet next on routine 1919 the policy subcommittee oh so if you if there's any questions or comments you have on any of those so just get them to me is next are sitting idle i yeah okay oh the first week in well because we're not gonna well if you I mean if you can okay so by the 1st of July yeah okay yeah yeah sorry we are me and I mean we had a very
funny in a weird series but with we had a series that we have proof for first read at the last meeting those who remind everyone we need to get any comments back on those right because we'll be voting on those in two weeks okay so these need to be these should be beginning of July July first okay and Rosa when is the next the seventeenth well we're gonna meet the 19th of June but that what we will you don't have to have the comments of these back button but we're having a meeting on the 17th and the 19th partly yeah our no Elijah lies oh oh you like names the policy committees can be a 19th of June on the seventh job there yes so the first ones may be 85 yeah we needed blood
for the last blast meetings we can even time for the nineties we need time for this that's why 1992 is a good year 1978 and in 83 this is a difficult task that the board is taking canceled baby okay kudos to you look you know the goal all of these policy updates is to not have any policies that are older than us get down and there still are some yes there are thank you very much for all of those next we have the approval of Perkins grants recommend a motion that the board approved the concept and sustainability of the Perkins innovation grant submitted to the State Department of Education second so it makes sense for me to be up here to talk a little bit about Perkins grants at this time usually last year for
every year prior we presented a draft of the grant that had lists of here's the expenditures here's the different categories this year we don't have that we just received information from the state and this is what the State Department of Ed Harold Mackin who's the director of career tech ed said he said basically on June 14 2007 teen the Connecticut State Department of Education announced the move to an electronic grant application system called the Connecticut eat grants management system the goal this electronic grant system is to reduce the administrative burden placed on eligible recipients when applying for grant funding in order to be eligible in order for eligible secondary and post-secondary recipients that stuffs as the high school to receive Perkins funds an electronic application must now be submitted through egrants access to this application
will be available in the fall of 2019 allowing all secondary and post-secondary recipients to enter budget data to find program specific activities and track the approval process only the intent to apply form is due to the CSD this spring so it says instruction and guidance I'm using it grants will come at a later date so we are ready to go we don't have the instructions we have completed and submitted the intent dr. Braille has signed it I know mr. post either countersign or but made sure it got to the state I have a copy so we have intended our we have included our intent to apply for the funds we envision the amount should be similar to what we've had in previous years but unfortunately this time of year is when we usually get this
and I just got this email this morning so it's perfect timing but I want you to know that we did apply we have an intent to apply and we'll get more details as they rolled them out I think we need to tape all the motion there's nothing to lose I have nothing to present I have nothing to vote on yeah yeah I agree okay so I I'm gonna make a motion that we table the approval of the Perkins grant second all in favor aye opposed thanks for okay thank you very much well done all right moving on we have the paraprofessional contract recommend a motion that the board approves a successor contract between the brookfield Board of Education and the Brookfield paraprofessional Union exhibit a second okay I believe you all have the contract in
front of you the would reach 10 of agreement with her professionals the other month and I did want to thank everybody who was on the negotiating team as well as well as everybody from the her professional negotiating unit as well after a few meetings who really had some productive collaborative sessions in which we were able to come to the tentative agreement and the gist of the contract is that we agreed on a 3-year contract duration this would be for 18 19 19 20 and 2021 because we had the extension we've pretty much finished with that first year so we're almost going into the second year already the general wage increase was two and a half percent for those three years but what we agreed upon in the contract as well is that the the the
grid the minimum and maximum would also increase by one and a half percent each year what was happening prior to this is that there was nothing in the contract language that would increase the minimum of maximum so anyone that was hired in was automatically hired in at the minimum and they pretty much stayed there there was no mechanism to move someone along the grid so you could so you could reward someone for seniority it's a the individual that was just hiring in almost received the same amount as the individual that had been there for five years so we have instituted a differential in the pay increase now so that there will be some separation from current employees to those new hires in addition to that we had a change in the contributions for the health
plan with that you have the single-payer the two-person benefits and the family benefits single pay they're going to stay the same for 1819 which obviously we're almost finished in that year as well as 1920 and in 2021 the single pay is going from 14 to 15 percent but the two person and the family pay are decreasing from 40 percent to 35 percent and that was something that really that was important to the paraprofessionals so I'm happy that we were able to reach agreement on that in addition to that there was a sunset on the longevity clause and this is going to be anyone hired after April 1st 2019 is not going to be eligible for the longevity again this this again does not impact anybody who is currently in the bargaining underneath at this time
that was the highlights if there's any questions on that let's hit fit within the budget yes yes okay we know their questions all in favor aye aye opposed that's Anderson thank you everyone right moving on to old business we have budget discussions with a possible motion this is just to discuss and approve the 2019 20 budget reduction considerations we have already discussed this in tentatively agreed upon it as far as what we would be communicating to the public as being the what our tentative agreement was based on how the budget turned out based on how the rest of the year ended up we do have to vote on that I believe if we're once we're in agreement to actually enact it in our budget color color ken prepared a list of those reductions that add
up to three hundred fifty nine thousand dollars so that which was the reduction we needed to take so we can get a review of what we've discussed over the last few months [Music] okay now wanted to point out while the world language lab is listed on here as a as a reduction it's actually not being reduced this is something as we had mentioned before the Board of Finance had taken it and put it into cash capital so we will are still having the world language lab it's not a part of what's considered reduction I think it's on here just because they were trying to make it add up to those it's I'm here because we have we have to remove it from our operating budget along with the other thank you okay so I guess
the question I would have is what's changed from the last one oh it's the same list from before exactly as we spend a lot of time actually it has it has changed a little bit library books you asked us to take a look at what they had in the activity funds and equipments we needed no small adjustment to equipment and the office saying about $9,000 change between equipment and physics so we have a smaller cut on the library book correct correct that's good what we had asked him to do was take a look and see if there was any equipment purchases we could defer from huckleberry Center school since them will be having new equipment with the new you know obviously replacing anything that is a safety risk at all but if it's just worn
if we can kind of eat it out for another couple of years and so I think they took that savings and then applied it to the library books so there's almost a $9,000 benefit right - that's a smaller cut it's not a reduction to the reduction and that didn't make sense either it's still an increase over current year's budget yes and which one were the club the club Simon's that were cut that was the two new clubs that mr. Brenda proposed and then I believe one other club at each high school ending yeah and I think it was to be determine that out there determine that yet determined with enrollment I think it was [Music] any other questions I for one was not happy but satisfied that we have done our diligence a total when
we did our preliminary motions so I would her just to go ahead and approve this and make it official what was what's the line that says revision for 25,000 that's the administrators professional development we've been working with revision learning for the past few years supervision and evaluation work and stop the revision of something yes and where were we we've made a phase-out plan with with revision this year will begin - knowing or reducing the next year I'm a 10,000 professional development whereas I being cut from I'm in looking at what we need to spend on to continue the work is currently I'm looking at cutting $10,000 that I have allotted for NGSS training for next year the reason that that hurts the least is because with the new Smithsonian modules that we get we have
PD built into the purchase of the new modules so so we will get that professional development for our teachers obviously so they can appropriately implement the modules however the additional NGSS training that I had planned for working on working with teachers on formative assessment and some other topics that are outside of the scope of the Smithsonian modules we have don't make me cry any other discussion with questions all in favor a wait wait I'm sorry there's no motion there's no motion to table yes please I would move that the board accept administrative recommended budget reductions is presented to the board as official adjustments to the 2019 2020 budget second did it go slow enough Lisa right pull in favor my post okay thank you everybody for your hard work on this represents months and months
of work and truly appreciative okay that brings us to new school building project which dr. brewer I think you pretty much handled everything in the superintendent's report unless anyone else has any questions regarding the new school project thrilled at the forward motion and then we have three main points trap 11 the top 11 yeah top 11 teacher of the year and then I want to talk about the I want to talk about the policy begging you [Music] I would like to make a clarification that with it when we do do it with the word language left just so people know that it's still you know don't find asterisks or something nice to explain yes or we can even just see I think when we when I did about it it's three hundred thousand five yeah
three hundred just talked about it at that yeah just on three 432 and just take it out all together I would do that yeah I I can understand why it's in here because it's it's changed and maybe thank you to the Board of Finance for or even though it had to be reduced you know that the collaborative work in ensuring that it still we can still have it in just as our uh just the point of emphasis the Communications Committee I had the opportunity to work with and the budget flyer did include a very bright yellow box that explain to all of those things so the public is aware it has been made aware so this would be a reiteration you know we could talk about the Perkins ground exciting stuff the non-talk that's right
