Good evening everybody. Welcome to uh the Canton Board of Education meeting and I'll call this meeting to order of the this is a regular meeting of Tuesday, June 2nd at 6:30 p.m. I just want to welcome everybody for coming tonight. We're going to start our meeting off with the pledge of allegiance. So, if you please all rise. I pledge algiance to the flag of the United States and to the father indivisibley and justice for all. >> Thank you. Before we move into our celebrates, I have the uh the distinct pleasure tonight of recognizing someone who's become a very familiar face and person at this table. And uh Lucas Manville has served with the Canton Board of Education as our student representative since he was a junior. And I can tell you that he has done

an outstanding job. >> Thank you. Now, being a student rep is a little bit more uh more entailed than you would think. He's at every meeting and Lucas actually lobbyed. We have special meetings and we have meetings during the day. Lucas lobbyed to say he wanted to be at those meetings. So, I I give him a lot of credit, but he comes back, he and Jonathan come back and um they uh report back to the board. Throughout the year, he's keeped us informed on what was happening inside our school from academics to uh activities to athletics to music and so on and so forth. But he's always been wellprepared and a real asset. As board members, we spent a lot of time talking about students, but Lucas reminds us it meant what it meant to

hear directly from a student. Next Friday, Lucas will graduate from Canton Canton High School, class of 2026. And like many of his classmates, he's preparing for the next exciting new chapter in his life. And that is going to take him to Bentley University where I know have no doubt he'll be a leader and contribute there. Also, Lucas, thank you for your service, your professionalism, and your commitment to Canton Public Schools. You've represented your fellow students with class, integrity, and pride, and this award is better because of your contributions. Please join me in congratulating Lucas Manville. Christmas. >> Great. I also have the pleasure tonight of um welcoming our new board member. Finley Lazard is now our new board member. She's our junior representative and Jonathan moves on to the senior leadership position for next year,

Jonathan Ho. So, thank you all. So, you would think one of the best parts about being a board of education member is to go through a budget cycle. >> No, it's it's being here with all of you and seeing all the smiling faces of our children, especially our kids that come from Cherry Brook Primary School. We love seeing you. We love having you. And tonight we are going to celebrate you and all the all that you've accomplished and send you off hopefully to a great summer and then hopefully we'll see you again in the fall. So I'm going to turn this over to Dr. Gman and he will introduce uh Principal Hammer. Super. Thank you, Mr. Daniels. It's great to see everyone. I also want to thank this is probably the most staff that I

have seen at a board of education meeting and this is the the staff that it gets to school really early and they leave really late. So to see them all here tonight, I definitely want to thank those staff friends. I I promise you, you won't forget the names of those teachers 15 years from now, 20 years from now, 30 years from now, and if you're getting old like me, maybe 50 or six, close to 60 years, you'll remember your teachers. So please make sure tonight that you give your teacher a big thank you. and families, please make sure you give your teachers a big thank you because they probably don't get it enough. So, it's so exciting to see my friends that I get to see at Cherry Brook Primary School on a regular basis

all dressed up. So, it gives me great uh pride to introduce the the principal of Cherry Brook Primary School, Mr. Abraham Board of Education members and welcome um Cherry Brook family, staff and as boys and girls know I call them friends. So welcome to our um annual spring um Canton um celebrates. Before I get to my Cherry Brook friends, we need to recognize a former Cherry Brook student. That's Marie Humphrey. Congratulations, Margie. um whose Fright Night poster was chosen by her peers to be this year's winning entry. Margie's design captivated CIS and his spooky ghost maps that showed her drawing skills and creativity. She planned a nicely balanced composition with shaping andformational

text. Wonderful job. >> You'll get any picture that you need tonight. We'll take our time up here with your children and then we're going to get a whole big picture on stage with our children and our staff if they're willing to come up. So, we start there. But I just want to thank everybody. supporting your kids. But B, I want to thank parents, grandparents,

friends, neighbors, all the folks that supporting our children because we all know that it use a term. It takes a village to raise a child. Um, the candy is a special village and all of you participating are very helpful. I want to thank our PTO. I went by Cherry Brook the other day and I saw the Cherry Brook fair going on. one time a long time ago I was one of the announcers and barkers there until I got stuck in one of the foxes and they didn't ask me back then but that's another but I just want to thank BT all that they do and um we look forward to seeing everybody next year and if you haven't voted yet I'm not going to tell you how it'll go but make sure you vote and

we'll bring all the children up now the stage Hey, this Right next to Let's do that then actually. John >> in 11 years. Some of you will be doing the same thing in the same spot. >> All right. All my sugar friends, my board of education members, please look at me is a bad person and all your parents and friends. >> Oh, you look fabulous. Everybody good? So I'll I know. You like that? Okay, I'm going to call the board of education back into order. And uh next on the agenda is public comment. We'll open up public comment to anybody in the auditorium. Is anybody in the auditorium like to speak for public comment? If you do, please come to the podium, state your name and your address. Julia, you good? >> Okay, seeing no

one, we'll go online. >> Anybody online that would like to speak for public comment, just raise your hand and we'll recognize you. >> I have Aaron and I will have Hi Erin. What? You now have the floor. >> Erin, you can go ahead. Maybe you're muted possibly. Erin, you like to speak? >> It might be on ours. Hang on one second. There we go. Aaron, you should be able. >> Erin, your mic is on. >> Okay. Can you hear me? >> Can. >> Okay. Excellent. I can't see you guys, so whatever is going on with my computer, but you know, we're going to do what we can. Um, so my name is Aaron Wgner Vincent, 30 South Street. Um, I'd like to start with thanking the board for all of their hard work. I think

at this point in the budget year, it seems like it would be an improvement to say it's a thankless job, but I just want you to know I appreciate you and I I know many others in the community do as well. Um, my hope is that our Canton community gets more involved prior to the budget vote. I think it's too easy to look at a dollar amount at the end of the year and simply say that's too much. My hope is that if there is something specific that someone doesn't agree with, they reach out to the members of the board. My hope is that if someone hears something that doesn't sound correct that they reach out to the source directly. My hope is that people will learn about the process to understand the why part

of things. The humanto human part needs to be more prominent because that is what community is. Uh I'll say again that teachers are leaving the profession at record rates across the country. As a community we need to ensure that we are attracting and maintaining educators. We need to offer competitive salaries for pair of professionals. Paying $17 an hour when the national average is 21 to $24 an hour is completely unacceptable and cost more money in the long run due to having to hire temps. Um, that's mostly all I have. I just want to say again, you know, I I I think the more human we can all get with each other about all of this when it comes to budget and different items and things that our children need, the more we can then focus

on that these are children, right? Like that's why we're all doing this. Um, and for adults, for us to be more human to human with each other and trying to be more curious and learn about it, I think is also going to be um a better way to support the children in our community. Thank you. That's all. Thank you for those comments. Anyone else online that would like to speak? >> I think >> I don't have any other raised hands at this point. That was just Aaron's hands. So there. >> Okay, we'll give it one more. Anybody else that would like to speak online? Seeing none, then we'll close public comment. Thank you. Okay, let's go on to administrative reports from the chairman uh from the chairman's corner. Um Dr. Brosman and I and it's

in his uh I'm sure it was in his report too. We attended the 50th anniversary of CRE uh was it was held at the Bushnull. It was um a very nice event that brought the history through of of CRE. Um and it was a great event and I'm glad that we're a participant there. The second thing I wanted to mention is um there's three dates and I know you have it in your packet but I'm going to call your attention to it. One is uh the Canton High School graduation. Typically the uh the board of education will walk uh there'll be seats up front um you don't have to tell me now but just so we can plan um because seats are at a premium. Um if you would let me know if you're going

to be able to make the graduation. So that's on 61226 and I believe it's 6:30 start. Can we know for sure? >> It should be 6:30. >> 6:30. Great. So please get there 6:15. Parking is always a problem. Backs up. I I would even suggest if you can get there at 6, you'd be better off if you're going to be there. Uh the second is um if you'd like on 615 is Canton Intermediate School. Great uh promotion ceremony. Again, if you uh if you are attending, we'd like you to to know that so we can have seats for you up front. We can recognize you uh at that time. And then uh finally, uh Dr. Gman, this will be the second year in a row that we have a uh end of the year convocation

and of course all the board members are invited and that starts at 1:45 p.m. So those are the uh things that I call your attention to uh tonight. Any questions for the chair? >> Oh, thank you. Yes. >> Is graduation day a full day of school for all students? >> For the middle school and the high school, it's a half day. >> For the rest of the student population, it's a full day. >> Okay. Thank you. >> For the middle school and high school. >> So, um I'm sorry. There is one final thing. It's in your kit and um it's in your Ford packet. So Cab has asked so CA has an annual at the annual meeting that's held in November and in um August they hold uh their um their midyear meeting and at

that meeting they filter through the resolutions the things that they're going to press upon that they'll bring to the board meeting in November and approve and then that will be their lobbying effort for the f for the following year. they asked for resolutions um for us to submit res uh for anyone to submit a resolution. And as you know, I'm I'm now on the board for CA. And so um on the back of this page, if you have it on the back, I put together a resolution for a couple reasons. One is it's time for camp to start um standing out and standing up for itself a little bit. So I'm in a position to be able to do that. The second thing is we've heard from the public that they would like us to

do more at the state level. So I intend to give testimony when I can. I intend to attend more of the state meetings. This is this is a proposal uh and basically you can read it but but um I'll go down um K further urges the state to this is this is what we're giving them and that we would approve. We're we're asking the state to increase and stabilize excess cost and special education reimbursement funding. We're asking them to explore funding mechanisms supported from broader statewide revenue sources. Reduce the financial vitality associated with extraordinary extraordinary special education costs. Provide greater predictability to local school districts and municipality municipalities for budget purposes. and ensure that all students, regardless of their wealth or size of their community, have equitable access to the legally required special education programs

and services. So, if the board chooses and we can move this as I guess we move it as a first reading, although um I would need to give that to them by August 6th. So, what's the best way to uh approach this? Um, well, I I think it would be tougher to ask the board tonight to do a resolution. So, I would do it as a a first read and if we need to schedule a special meeting to do that, if the board chooses to do that, we'll schedule a special meeting. >> And the reason being is this has to be in August 6th. And forgive me because I just got it a couple weeks ago. So, I wrote this resolution for them, but I I want Canton to be first on the board is

is providing a proposal. And second of all, I think this speaks to all the things that we uh we care most about when it comes to the state. Any questions? I think it's long overdue. Uh I think this is uh well thought out, well written. I' I'd be happy to endorse it as a final read tonight. >> State been talking about this forever, >> right? >> It needs to take action. >> Well, I I would take a motion either as a first or as a I could take it as a final rate. >> This isn't anything that like it's not like a policy. So, there's nothing that says it's first read or second read. It's what the board would feel comfortable it would do, >> right? Because I'm assuming this would be from the Canton

board of education. So, if the board adopts this, I could submit it to Cave. They then it will be voted on by CA on whether the resolution uh moves forward, but at least we get our name on the board. >> Luke, just so you know, on the agenda, it does say that um review and possibly approve a submit submission. Oh, >> so there is the ability to actually approve it this evening if you feel you'd like to do so. >> So I'll take a motion then accordingly and then we'll have more discussion. Mr. Shler, so moved. Second. >> Thank you, Ally. So I have a first and second. Further discussions on the resolution. >> Can you give us three minutes to read it in its entirety? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Thank you. Was this in

the board packet? This was in board pack, right? >> Yes. Anybody need more time? Kim, are you okay? >> Yeah. >> Are you planning to sign it as chair or are we all going to sign it because I've seen both done at the state level. >> I'm probably not I'm not gonna sign it. I don't think I'm going to sign it at all. I'm going to submit it from the camp board of education. So, I have a first and second on on the on the floor on the uh on the resolution. Um any further discussion, questions, concerns? All those in favor? And Felicia is on and Amy's on. And Amy, are you able to vote? >> Amy votes yes. Thank you, Felicia. Were you able to >> Okay. So, I'll leave it at um 70

03870. >> Okay. Okay. Thank you. >> Um L just quick before we move on back to the calendar of events. Uh we highlighted the high school graduation and intermediate school. The middle school is on the 17th. >> Oh, did I get the wrong date? >> No, no, no, no. You just >> I'm sorry. Thank you. >> Um >> no Cherry Brook promotion. >> So I'll let Mr. Amry talk about that since he's here because it was they don't have a promotion ceremony, but I'll explain. Mr. Emry, you want to explain what sheriff does? This >> we don't have a promotion, but we have a grade three grade and then a PTO sponsored grade three. >> Okay. Okay. So, that's not >> No. Okay. >> And I just want to let people know there was a

little confusion on the dates. So, it it was first put on June 15th, which is the same night as CIS, but Mr. Amry works with his PTO and they're doing it next Monday. So, >> perfect. >> Something we do for kindergarten and third grade. Each of those sections have celebrations of learning. Yeah. >> Which is another That's correct. I'm sorry to hear you. >> Perfect. Thank you. >> Okay. Any other questions, comments? Thank you for that. And um let's move on to the superintendent's announcements. Super. Thank you, Mr. Daniels. It's good to see everyone tonight. And those of you that are joining online and for those of you that will watch recording, the the the life of the superintendent of schools, as I've said to some of you, is at events almost like every night

for the past couple weeks and it will continue. But it it's such an honor to be last week at the the fourth grade concert at Ken Intermediate School, able to attend the junior and senior awards last week which was just a wonderful event and looking forward to Thursday night, the senior scholarship evening where our community partners come together and honor our senior class with a tremendous amount of money. Um, I I would share with you if you haven't been to that event that that's truly a a special evening. Um, and I I put that up there with um a graduation exercise relative to seeing the community come together and provide kin high school children with the financial um resources that they will use later in their life. It's just a wonderful thing. So, I publicly

thank them. The the other thing that has really been taking a lot of time, as many of you know, is I've been spending a lot of time analyzing our budget and where we are relative to the reductions. And as I said at finance this morning, the the reductions that you approved at at our last meeting are are the same reductions that were sent um to the board of finance. and and we'll see how the the referendum uh plays out today and and if the the the team needs to come back to the board of ed um in the next week or two, we're we're prepared um to do so. What I will also say is probably my highlight today was being able to meet with Lucas, Jonathan, and um Finley to really and Kira to

do the students at the center and just the the dynamics of the the four of us, five of us with Kira had today and creating that video. It was fun for me to be able to say what a highlight is. Um that that was truly a highlight and I also um welcomed Finley. Finley, I've heard that it has been your dream to be a student board of education representatives. So that that came true actually um today with one of her first activities that she was able to do. And um just walking around the high school today in the middle school and spending some time with um th those three students make it a joy to be your superintendent. We have a lot that is going to be happening the next two weeks. I do invite

you and I think it's important if you can attend the closing convocation on June 17th at 1:45. I think that's an important event. Some of you have attended that before. We will recognize our teacher of the year. We'll recognize our pair professional of the year. And for the first time, we will be giving out a staff member of the year. And we'll also be honoring uh teachers for 25 years, 30 years in retirement. Wow. >> Which is pretty special. And as you know, and I think some people forget, and I need to keep saying this, it worked really hard on a a retirement incentive plan. Um, and we're losing some really good people, but it also generated savings for us of $250,000. So that that is creative in what we did, but it is your

opportunity also to thank the the teachers and the staff on the 17th and bid farewell to our five retirees which is quite a high high number um for a small district. I'll take any questions out of the superintendent's office at this time. Any questions for the superintendent? Okay, hearing none, we'll move on to the assistant superintendent report. Mr. Bishop, >> thank you very much. It's uh it's June 2nd and teaching and learning continues to take center stage in the public schools. Uh but as we've heard tonight, this is effectively the Super Bowl of celebrations for uh our community at the end of this year. And we know that we would not be able to be so successful in our academics, so successful in our community building if it weren't for the the work of an

amazing staff, an amazing community. So, the opportunity to be able to celebrate together uh and be able to enjoy that time is is absolutely phenomenal. It looks different at different schools, at different ages and stages, but the work that our kids and staff have done this year has really been uh impressive, and I look forward to celebrating outstanding academic growth with you all come this fall. Um, I'd also like to be able to remind our community about a uh message sent on Monday. It's a transportation survey that has been sent out from the district. Again, we're working to rightsize our transportation efforts. U, it is helpful. It's incredibly helpful for us to be able to know your transportation intentions ahead of time. We're hoping to be able to have this information within two weeks. and

we'll be building new, renewed, rebuilt uh trans transportation routes that will be optimized for the the students who really need it. We'll continue to do work throughout the summer to be able to share that information, but it may come at a different time than may have than it may have in the past through past school mailings, but we'll be working directly with the schools to make sure that information is is shared out and made available. But, uh we do ask our families please to be able to take a look at that survey. It's very quick. It's through powers school which will continue to be a primary mechanism for communication. I'll take any questions. >> Any questions for the assistant superintendent? >> Hearing none, we'll move on to the student representative reports. Luc, you want to

go first for your last report? >> Yes, sir. Um, a quick general report is that as Dr. Gen mentioned, we have started filming the final students at the center. focus on the great K community that surrounds our school and those really helpful Kon Kent public schools that may work outside the walls of our actual district. All right, the middle school CMS track had their final meet, Woodbury Invitational. Eighth grade promotion will be on June 17th at 6 p.m. Their last day of school is the next day, June 18th. And seventh grade has a field trip to Lake Compounds this Friday, June 5th. In terms of the high school, on the 27th of May, all participating physics students went on a field trip to Six Flags and learned about gravitational forces created by roller coasters can

apply that to daily life. On May 29th, it was senior prom. Uh it was a really fantastic night and we got some teachers to dance with us and some admins Dr. >> So, we have pictures. >> I think they're coming out with the lookout. I'm sure they're great. Um, next week, seniors will start their exam blocks and have graduation rehearsals as they wrap up their high school careers. And in two weeks, the rest of the school population will begin their own final exams and finish up the year. Also, there were two class S track state champions out of this this year. Lucy O' Conor won the high jump and broke her own school record with a new high of 5'3 in. and Caleb Vernon has won the state championship in the triple jump. >> Great.

>> Um, okay. So, for I just want to firstly go over our highlight for today's meeting. Um, it's going to be about the CIS art show that the CIS held on Wednesday, May 13th. The CS art show highlighted over,200 pieces of student artwork showcasing student creativity, self-exression and personality through a wide range of artwork. Many pieces connected art to other subjects, especially science, including volcano artwork and fire prevention pieces to foster fire awareness in a fun way for students. But this art is actually important for the student body because it supports and builds student confidence by giving students a public space to display their work. As one CIS parent commented, "The art show makes student work feel more meaningful because families can see of the full collection of student creativity across the year, allowing students

to develop a stronger sense of pride and self uh and self-confidence. Additionally, the CIS Jazz Band had also performed which provides another way for multi-talented CIS students to happily display their artistic abilities and allow for self-exression as we as a district foster talent and passion. Thanks to Mrs. Costello the CIS art teacher. This event would not have been possible. This event that we're highlighting also strongly aderes to board goal number four learning environment and belonging. As my time at CIS interviewing not only teachers in in attendance like Miss Costello and CIS student parents, the children at CIS um had expressed an immense self-ride reading their parents um from art artwork to artwork. a couple students who actually happened to recognize me even turting around the building demonstrating such events are building recognition and value for

their student. Now moving on to more general highlights for CIS. Fourth grade had their Ellis Island migration/immigration simulation which had brought um an engaging perspective of history to life. Um, fifth grade is holding their annual learning celebration showcasing student accomplishments in writing and social studies, bringing a strong example of student growth, achievement, and math engagement for us. Sixth grade will also have their celebration on June 14th moving up to um I'm going to cover one thing for Cherrybrook and I'll let Billy hand the wheel, but just to recap, we did have our Cherry Brook walkthrough. I'm sure um with Mr. for also go through um as we're having a first year implementation of student council at Cherry Road which supports student leadership role model role modeling and early uh responsibility. This is I personally think

this is vital to build early foundation for student leaders down the line and a very important opportunity to provide um students the opportunity um to demonstrate or the students who demonstrate these qualities of immense leadership. This also adheres to board rule number one of student. >> That's great. However, Sherburg Student Council Service Project collected non-p perishable donations and created over 400 baggies to support local shelters. Another highlight of student leadership, service, and community impact. This last Friday 61st 61st annual children's merit by the PTO included the cakewalk craft baskets games touch a truck town vehicle cultures and CT state police helicopter providing a major community building event. Third grade has their transition season visiting CIS as rising stars. Okay, thank you very much. Any questions for the student reps? Okay, great job by the way.

And Lucas again, we're going to miss you, but good luck at uh at Bentley. Be a kind bulldog, please. All right. Okay. Uh we're on to the business manager report. Mrs. Robins, please. >> Good evening and thank you. Um, tonight we're reporting on the financial results and projections as of May 31st, 2026. We have one month to go. Um, the overall forecast as of May 2026 is unfavorable $235,853 which is 15,587 worse than the previous month. General education is projected to be favorable 44,35 which is 23,201 better than the previous month. Special education is forecast to be unfavorable 280,488 which is 38,789 worse than the previous month. So some of the highlights for the changes in May. Um you know salaries and benefits. Um just wanted to note that the overbudget condition is primarily driven

by the negative forecast and substitutes which we have been talking about all year long. Um also I'd like to mention that we have used um some grants, some strategic grants um and fund filled vacancies um which have helped to um give us a positive variance in some of the light items which were used to offset the over budget um condition. District purchase services is impacted um by the daily use of substitutes within school buildings to cover teacher absences. Um unlike the previous category we spoke about, these services cover certified teachers short-term use of sick and personal time, usually one day at a time. Um our last category is special education. Um the highlight there is um that special education transportation has remained under budget throughout the year which is um quite an achievement. We have

had um over budget conditions in the previous years and it took some very good management to get us where we are in that category and that was able to offset the overbudget condition in other special education categories which provide student support that is mandated through individual education plans. Um so we are approaching the final weeks of the year. We are heavily focused on um um balancing active purchase orders, closing out encumbrances which are plans to spend which are dwindling. Um and um I feel like our priority um remains maximizing remaining grant opportunities and um executing a successful end of year. >> Okay. So I I I guess the way this would work then on the 15th we'll be reporting our finances to the board of finance and there's probably not going to be much movement

one way or another. However, nothing is in concrete until we go through the audit which happens probably by October. >> We're just notifying them that we're going to we're going to be probably under a little bit. >> Correct. This is this is an estimate. >> Okay. Are you sure? Right. Until the audit comes through. We don't. Right. >> Yes. >> Okay. >> Any questions on the uh finance report? >> I I'll just say that the finance report and the resolution that we just adopted that you were kind enough to write, they speak to each other that that we shouldn't be in this situation. No, no town should be in this situation. >> Uh and and we need the state to step in and >> solve that. We're hoping in the long session that they'll do

a little bit more than they did this year, but thank you. So, I'll take a a motion that Camp Board of Education approve the May 2026 financials as presented. >> Thank you, Michelle. Thank you, Kim. So, first and second. Further discussion. >> Hearing none. All in favor? I >> Amy votes yes. >> I know Felicia had to drop so 70. >> Thank you, Kim. Okay, we're at 70 on that. All right. Uh, we are on to new business. Dr. Gford. >> Excellent. And you had the opportunity last week to spend a great day at Sherburg Primary School and I I believe we had almost every single board member there. Maybe minus one or two minus two. So we had seven board members there and so you had a great So I'm going to turn it

right over to Mr. Ramley. >> Thank you Dr. Gman. Um, and thank you to our members that attended last. It was very nice to welcome you and highlight wonderful work that we've been um accomplishing at Cherry Brook this year. Um as um a reminder and the review, our overall focus this year included aligning our practices in literacy and math instruction around high quality instructional strategies. We really um utilized coaching cycles, assessments and progress monitoring to guide instruction. We collectively foster and strove strive for a safe, inclusive, and supportive school climate through practices, schoolwide culture initiatives. We we focus on regular um and proactive communication collaboration with families and community partners and participated in professional developments, support students, staff growth, and ensure strong sustainable practices. in the areas of student growth and achievement. We engage in

team meetings focused on curriculum, instructional strategies and student performance data to strength teaching and learning. We regularly analyze academic, social, emotional and behavioral data thinking about that whole child and monitor growth and support well-being across all domains. In partnerships and community engagement, we maintain maintain consistent and formal and informal communications with with families and community partners. We collaborated with school leadership specialists and staff are planning both school event celebrations and rec recognition opportunities throughout the year. And we continued our strong collaboration with community partners and other partnerships with um with outside organizations to support staff, students and families. Um, in regards to financial sustainability and efficient operations, we uh continue to partner with district and and school stakeholders to develop responsible a responsible transparent budget that supports academic, social, emotional, and operational priorities. Um, we

continue to analyze enrollment trends and student achievement data to guide um staffing, class size decisions, and targeted allocation of resources. And we continue to develop a long-term plan for flexible adaptive world learning spaces at Cherry Brook for learning environment belonging. We worked on fostering a culture of respect and inclusion and empathy through schoolwide initiatives and programs such as respondent classroom all meetings um support um our open environment initiatives. We ensure a safe and respectful school environment, collaboration and teaching opportunities and we um make sure to create opportunities for recognition, celebration and success of students. Um embracing equity, we collaborate and support each and every student utilized high quality instructional practices to support learning opportunities for all and promoted and supported stu students about being safe, kind and responsible. And finally, with workforce development, we focused

on our goal of retaining high qualified um certified and non-certified staff. And we created and implemented a collaborative series of professional development opportunities for all staff, certified and non-certified, to support students and program questions for Mr. Amry. >> So just two things. One is um the professional development that you put together for both certified and non-certified. That's a big deal because prior to our superintendent coming on board, that was a that was a bone of contention with non-certified that they didn't feel that they were getting the professional development that they needed. So that that's wonderful to see. Uh and number two, I know on behalf of the board, the hospitality and the um presentation that we get at Cherry Burke is always wonderful. But you do a great job and your staff does a great

job. We always enjoy being there. Um, so thank you for that and we look forward to seeing you probably in October. I'm not sure when the next time we're out there, but October, November. So, >> thank you, Ms. >> Okay, have a good summer. Thanks. Okay. All right. Um, we're going to go through the reports and uh Russ Bush had eye surgery and he made the finance meeting today but he can't drive uh at night and he had his sunglasses on and we knew it was Russ but you know behind those sunglasses. Anyways, so we had a very good finance meeting uh today. I thought that and I'm gonna I'm going to turn it over to Jordan in a second for a food service update. But I I heard some great things that are going

on uh in finance. One in particular has to do with capital improvement. You'll probably get a bigger presentation on this a little bit later, but there is the opportunity for some of our large capital energy projects uh to work with this company that will basically um come in and do an energy audit, allow us to upgrade our equipment, and they're very good at telling you what your savings is going to be by the more efficient uh pro products that they're going to put in there. And that efficiency, the savings that you're going to make in in uh from that efficiency goes towards paying off the equipment. And so you say to yourself, well, what what if there isn't a savings or they're wrong? They guarantee the savings. So it I don't want to nothing is

free in this life, but to some extent that looks almost free to me. Um but it's it's a very good program. So what's happening now is Mrs. Robin is uh meeting with our attorneys. They're putting together contracting. We will uh we will giving the board of finance presentation when ready. Uh that may come in July maybe. I guess >> hoping for June. I will I'll give the board an update on that because I think you want to come to hear that presentation or at least be online for it because it's it's pretty amazing because we're going to be able to do some things with capital that we weren't going to be able to do and I don't know how we were going to heat and and you know ventilate air and so on and so

forth because things weren't getting capital getting hot. So anyways that's what's going on there. I'm really happy about that. And then um Mrs. Susant is making great progress and she's going to fill you in now on the food service update. >> Sure. Thank you. So, we formed the committee back after the April finance subcommittee meeting when we had been speaking about nutrition services at the finance subcommittee. Um, and it really turned into something that we needed to have an offshoot of. So, the committee is comprised of myself, Mrs. Le Chance, Chair Daniels, um Mrs. Robbins, and Dr. Gman, as well as our food service coordinator, um Maggie Dreger. Um and we really hit the ground running. We have met already formally three times, um with myself, Amy, Dr. Gman, and Mrs. Robbins meeting an additional

four times at each of the schools. So we've eaten now at Cherry Brook, CIS, CMS, and CHS with the main goal of looking at food services from a holistic perspective and making sure that we're it's equitable, drives um participation and is also mainly financially sustainable. Um so data discovery was our first step and finding out really what we need to do and how we can fix that and make our food services program um more financially sustainable. um and educating ourselves on the issues and challenges that are faced with having food service program in district. Um and we also have had a focus group at each of the schools where we met with uh a small select group of children at Trey Brook, CIS, CMS and CHS. Um and the spectrum of those students were ranging

from students who ate the lunch at school every single day to students have who have never even once eaten in um our cafeterias. And we got a lot of really honest feedback which um we will take and we are going to meet June 16th. Um Dr. Gman also provided us with action steps and an action plan that we are going to look at a little bit more in depth and potentially finalize um at our June 16th meeting. And then today um we presented to the finance subcommittee um an increase that is mandated um and it's the minimum increase which is 10 cents to um the lunches. So Cherrybrook will go from 375 to 385 as well as CIS 375 to 385. Um and CMS and CHS will go from $4 to10 $410 not $10. So

um and that will be for we will present that and vote on that as a full board. Correct. No, >> no, we already done we already did as >> and then um free breakfast. Do you want me to >> and then also for the 27th school year um 100% sure that breakfast will be free. Okay, so that has been finalized that breakfast next year will be free um for all students in the district. >> Thank you. Great report. Any questions for Mrs. Tucson on the food service situation. >> We wanted to attend that meeting. Are we able to attend it? >> Oh, of course. >> Yeah. It's always open. >> When is it? >> June 16th. >> 11:30. >> I think I'm 99% sure. 11:30. But >> we'll get 100% sure in a second. >>

Okay. Um, and if anyone is wondering, the number one across all schools meal was French toast. >> 11:30 11:30 on the 16th is the next food service meeting and that's held on the second floor. >> Okay, let's uh move on uh to curriculum. Mrs. Cerp, this >> Oh, policy. >> Oh, I'm sorry. because there is no policy policy report Mr. We did not meet tonight to start something now to pick it up in September. Didn't seem to make any sense. But as you saw, as you will see in a few minutes, we have lots of policies to close out the year with to approve. >> That'll take us right past 8 o'clock. It certainly will. Okay, great. All right, then. Thank you, Mr. Curriculum, Mr. >> Sure. Um, so I actually am reporting on two

curriculum committee and the technology committee. Um we met on 527 for curriculum committee and as we've been talking about a lot lately technology is is a really big um theme. The curriculum committee has been working on it more seriously the end of this year and will be moving into the next year as well. One of the things we found out at our meeting uh last week it was is Matt Mervvis who is the director of AI strategy and innovation at Ed Advance and he is also the co-host of Chat edu which is rated the number one AI and ed educational podcast by Forbes. Um he's going to be presenting at our board retreat in September. Um and that is super super exciting. I've heard him speak before and he is amazing. So that will be

really good to hear. Um and then we also spoke briefly about our district curriculum site where parents can go um to a website for detailed curriculum information and that should be live by July 1st. Correct. >> Um so that that's a really good benefit as well. And then in the technology committee um in your virtual packet online there were a couple of documents there. So we met on 521. Um, we basically went over what I talked about last month that the curriculum committee went over. Um, but we heard about uh, do you know when it was, John, that they surveyed the teachers? Was that in the fall of last year of this year? >> It it was in the spring of this year. >> Okay. So, it was very recently they surveyed the teachers. They

discovered three main focus areas where tech and the the tech team can better help um, in the classroom in integrating technology and in helping um, the faculty. And what I asked um Jeff to do is to take those three main focus points and kind of give us a bulletointed list of the initiatives and the specific ways that they've been um working on that. And I think it's very beneficial for all of us board members to know, excuse me, because it is coming up more often in the community. Um and I think it will give us some really good talking points when we're reaching out to the community, when the community is reaching out to us with questions. Um so that like I said is virtually in your packet that you brought. Um and that is

basically it. >> Excellent. Any questions for curriculum and technology? >> I sorry when the um meeting with the at advanced AI >> that's our um s um I'm sorry our retreat in Okay. Thank you. Yes. >> Should be September 4. >> Yes. Okay. >> Just I'm reading it right Michelle. It looked like that uh Jack and his team would have come up with several uh solutions as he calls them. Yes. that would appear to be saving us a fairly decent amount of money. Am I reading that right? >> Yes, you are. Um and I reported on that last month. The two big ones I think are um the app, the in-house app or program that we put together to track druy to buy that would have been $8,000. We put it together for about 200.

Um and then also a program that will track the usage of different apps on different devices. We're building that inhouse to buy it would cost approximately $36,000. So there are definitely some cost-effective money-saving solutions in that list. That's why I think it's very important for us all to look at. Um and our next curriculum meeting is actually this week. It's on Thursday the 4th 9. >> Okay. Thank you very much. Any questions for curriculum technology? Further questions? Okay. Hearing none, we'll go to um CRE, which I've already given you a little bit of an update on that. So we'll move on to the insurance committee. This is Tucson. Okay. So, we have not met since we as a board last met. Um, we meet this Thursday um at 7 pm. However, I did meet with

um Chair Windsor and Mark Penny just to prep for potential the negotiate teacher negotiations that we will have this fall. Um, and that was really just a prep for what we would like to be doing and looking at to make sure that our benefits are as equitable and financially sound for both our employees as well as the taxpayers. Um, it's it's a balance and it it's going to be >> Yeah. So, we're um >> no magic no magic. >> No, there's not unfortunately. I wish I wish there was, but we really are um driving in and our consultant USI is great and giving us many many options um of how we can do that through wellness plans, benefit options, things like that to um really drive wellness um which I think helps in the long

run with our clients. >> Great. Good. >> Okay. So, your meeting is at 7 o'clock and then um curriculum is at um 11. >> No, correct. >> On the same day, right? And I believe the sports banquet is next month. >> Okay. >> Scholarship. Okay. All right. Um and Sparker PTO, how are you >> down there? >> Hang out. >> I know. Um, I'm gonna go ahead and start with Cherry Brook. Um, as already reported, the 61st 61st Children's Fair was held in 529, welcoming approximately 500 students and families. The proceeds for this event directly support field trip transportation for all Cherry Brook students. Uh, this event was made possible through strong community involvement with the state and local police, 150 donated cakes, bonders, and over 50 volunteers. Um, sure PTO is very active and

they have many things on the horizon uh, end of this year and beginning of next such as a welcoming project trio which is a musical enrichment program. They're going to have an ice cream truck for the third grade celebration. Uh, popsicles for a celebrity greeting event at the library and a welcome back lunch for teachers at the start of the year. Um over at CIS, they were able to provide funds to supplement final field trips in building items for the entire year. Um they're hosting their first ever color run this Friday, June 5th. There's going to be food trucks and a DJ. So I think I might stop what's a color. It's where the kids all wear like white and then there's powder colored powder like thrown at them and then they come out with

like a tie dye t-shirt kind of situation >> and the superintendent's the superintendent's involved, right? I will not >> I think it's an assistant. I just physically >> I got it. >> Also over at CIS, they're looking for new board members for next year as uh the president and the two weeks are moving on from their positions. >> Um over at the middle school, they continue to plan for field day and the eighth grade promotion ceremony. Lobster loop reser registration will be live late this week for look for that. Um it will be on August 30th this year. Uh they also continue to look for volunteers for their board. Uh athletic boosters uh states are happening across spring sports. We heard about our two uh state placing people in track. Um and boys lacrosse plays

on our turf tomorrow at 4:30 for states. Uh they also continue to look for help uh volunteers and also at their transfer station. So reach out to Colleen Sagal for more information on that. Uh, finally with CFA, the third annual night out for the arts has been scheduled. Uh, that will be September 25th at 6 PM. So save the date on that. That's always a fun event. Um, EFA is supporting this arts summer camps this year. Uh, Bandfest, which is in its second year now. And then new this year, they have Spotlight, which is for kids interested in theater, and Creativity Camp, which will focus on art. um if your kids have interest in that. I believe it's third to fifth graders or in that age range. Um you have to go to camp parks

and bre and register for those and space is limited. Uh they also provide hospitals for fourth graders and their families after their very first concert. Um, I just want to take a moment too to say huge thank you to our PTOs. Um, our parent volunteers put in so much time and energy and effort and creativity to really do special things for our students and our families. Um, and I don't think they always get the credit that they deserve for that. Um, and also as you've heard, they all need help. So >> yeah, >> as things might be changing a little bit next year with they might need more support than ever uh financially and with your time. So please public out there, please consider helping support our parent organizations. >> Great. Thank you. Um questions

about the PTO's? >> Ally, what was the um night out for the Ark? What was the date on that? I >> I didn't hear you. >> The date for the night out for the Arks? >> Uh the 25th of September, I believe. >> Yes. >> Thank you. Yep. >> I get nervous when I start getting meetings in September. >> Meeting. It's fine. >> Well, I know, but my phone start to talk about Paul. Anyways, okay. Thank you for that update. >> All right. I'll call your attention to the calendar of events that Miss Sny has provided. Um, and again, um, try to let the chair know where you're going to participate, when you can participate, and um, please make note of those dates in your calendars. All right. Uh, we'll move on to the consent

agenda. We have May 7th, May 12th, May 19th, and May 28th, which made me think how much work this board's been doing. Um, and so I really want to tell you how much I appreciate you that the superintendent talks about nights out, which there are many nights out, but um, this board, I realize everybody has family, children, things like that, and uh, doing a great job. So, any any changes or comments on that? If not, we'll accept them as provided hearing. Yes. >> Oh, no. I don't have a question. I was I was motioning motioning. >> Oh, we don't need a motion. We could just accept the consent agenda. Okay. Hearing hearing none. Then the u the consent agenda is accepted. All right. Here's where if you need to make a bathroom run, we can

make it we can we can take a time out. But here we go. Are you ready? This is uh this is where I appreciate Mr. Shriveler because he really does all the the backup work to all this stuff and Joe I just want to thank you for all that you do when it comes to policy all the backup and explanations and time that you put into that. So thank you. Thank you and had a great committee this year. >> Good. Then I'm going to turn this over to you and if you make the motion it doesn't need a second. >> Nothing new here but these are all up for adoption. It's all a second read, but we've been through it all before. Happy to answer any questions about them. Uh, I'll move that we adopt

the budget procedures and line item transfers uh as an as a new policy. >> Motion's been made on the budget procedures and line items transfers. Any questions? >> Nothing new in it except the need to need to notify bargaining groups for money in non-lapsing accounts has been eliminated. We don't have any. >> So it's required to adopt the policy. There's nothing there. We have a we have a motion. All those in favor? I. Amy >> I. >> Okay. Seven. Right. >> We have seven. >> Thank you. Seven on that. Mr. Sher. Uh I move we adopt the sex discrimination and sexual harassment as related to students. Uh the update here is we need a second I guess. the second. >> No, I don't. If you make the motion, we don't need a second. Move that.

Then uh it allows prohibits. But in terms of what's new in the from our current policy, John, help me. >> Hold on just a second. I'm trying to get right there. with updates to whom a report uh should be given new addresses, new new organizations to and new government. >> Correct. With a number of uh a number of offices moving it uh replaces the the location of a number of different locations and just further codifies the shipment policy directly in line with um previous title uh law. >> So we have a motion on author for sex discrimination and sexual harassment students. All those in favor I >> I >> thank you 70. Mr. Shyman, >> I move we adopt the sex discrimination and sexual harassment regarding personnel. It's the same issue as above. Uh same

changes as above which is nothing of any great significance unless you're looking for the the new addresses and stuff which are important. Discussion hearing none. We have a motion on for sex uh for improved policy on sex discrimination sexual harassment personnel. All those in favor? I >> I 70. Thank you, Mr. Sha. I move we adopt uh the conflict of interest policy. >> Okay. Questions, discussion? the it it it it specifies that if a a board members relative and it explains who that would be applies for a job in the district it can be approved the board of education approves >> can't be a position of supervision I think right well that's a different policy >> oh I'm sorry okay then we we me jump ahead >> uh it it clarifies than it is from

the past. >> Uh and it's quite clear about >> none of us could take a paying job in the school system. But if one of our relatives applied for a job, that would be a possibility, but it would have to be approved by the board. >> I got that right, John. >> Um it it it's a shipment model policy, which is different than the uh cave policy that had been uh determined before. and and I'm gonna I'm going to read it directly for uh conflict of interest. It's it has two elements. The first is no member of the Canton board of education the board shall be employed for compensation by the board in any position in the school system. So you do not have the opportunity to get paid by the Canton public schools. Um
