001we have a wonderful evening because we have some uh some camp celebrate activity. Thank you. So, we're going to be able to um enjoy that. It it certainly makes our our meetings a little bit more special. So, we'll start off tonight with the pledge of allegiance. I'm going to ask Jonathan to lead us in the pledge. I aliance to the flag of the United States of America and to the stands one for all. Thank you, Jonathan. I'm going to move some things around a little bit uh because of some of our some folks have to do some different things here tonight. So, I'm going to ask for a motion if we're going to move the students report to the beginning right now so Jonathan can make that report and get to some studying that he

002has to do. So, can I have a motion to move the uh student representative reports to the beginning of the agenda? Thank you, Peggy. First, second, Joe. Thank you. Any discussion? All those in favor? I Okay, Jonathan, we're going to go with you first. >> Thank you. Um, since Lucas isn't here, I'll be covering uh the reports for Canon High School Middle School for Canon High. On September 19th, the AP physics AP physics class had a winding trail and they talked to Miss Tucker or anyone further for details. Uh, on October 3rd, the government classes hosted local candidates for interviews with student body in preparation for the mock debate and election coming up. for October 8th, the college fair. Um 110 representatives from close high post close post high school opportunities showed up. On October

0037th, the SEAK mission, possible conference with Mr. Goen, and student leaders focused on sportsmanship. Um upcoming for October is pretty packed. PSAT is for all ninth, 10th, and 11th grade students on October 15th, which is tomorrow. The music coffee house is this Friday on October 17th. and the homecoming dance which is the La La Land game on October 18th this Saturday. >> That's great. >> For CMS um eighth grade families attended a presentation about a field trip to Washington DC uh set to take place in April of 2026 along with some picture retakes coming out this Thursday and eighth graders will be taking the PSAT Tuesday on October 21st. In CIS can't enter intermediate school. Um, some students started the year with the schoolwide kindness kindness rocks project and dove into their first academic units

004across all subjects. And CIS also celebrated its custodians national custodian day and began during lessons on responsible decision making and held elections for Connecticut governor program as a part of fifth grade civic. Um, at Cherry Brook, students took part in the bus safety week lessons with uh led by Mr. Omera and Mr. Barnes, including a hands-on visit to a parked bus to practice what they learned. And Cherry Brook also continues its birthday club books for families to donate library books in celebration of birthdays and school recognized custodians on national custodian day for their hard work keeping the building safe and great questions for Jonathan student report. So is this the week that starts spirit week is this week or is it next week? It should start this Friday. I think we should have all the

005events library activities for Mr. That would generate a lot of spirit. Okay. Anything else for Jonathan? So, Jonathan, you're excused because I know you have a lot going on. So, thank you for being here tonight. Good report. Appreciate Okay. Um, so we're going to move to the next item on the agenda is public comment. And public comment is really a special thing for people of the public to be able to give the board input. The the interesting thing about board of education meetings are board of education meetings are educa our board meetings in the public but not for the public which is kind of weird I know but we do make we do make uh room for public comment on anything that you would like to say or talk to the board about. We ask

006you to make those comments for three minutes or less. We ask you to give your name and your address and always to keep them uh as civil as possible. So, I'm going to open up now to public comment. Does anybody have any public comment for the board of education? Anybody in the audience? We'll start there and then we'll go to our friends online. >> I My name is Debbie Miller 70 and I have raised >> Debbie. You would you want to go to the podium? No, I've got a big >> I just want to say I've raised two generations through the Canton school and they have been fantastic for my family. >> Thank you. Thank you for saying so. >> And just for the record, I need your address. >> What? >> I need your

007address. >> I I got to keep it official. I know where you live. Okay. Thank you. Anybody else for public comment? All right, we'll move from the audience to online. Anyone online with public comment? >> Joining us online, you can use that raise hand feature of Zoom and I'll call you by your Zoom name. >> Okay. And we will we will close out public comment and continue. >> I'm going to ask the board for for the audience here tonight. I know they don't want to be with us until 11 o'clock tonight. Um, but actually we won't be here either. 11 o'clock tonight. I'm gonna ask the board for a motion to move up. Um, Canton celebrates to the next item on the agenda. Can I have a motion for that? Thank you, Michelle. First, second,

008Joe. Thank you very much. Any any discussion on that? Okay, I have a first and a second to move this up on the agenda. All those in favor? I >> Thank you. Okay. Motion passes. So, we're going to move up to uh can't celebrates. Dr. Gman, if you kick that off for me. >> Super. I would like to welcome Mr. Pippo and Dr. Kidwell to recognize staff members that are here to help him present for Camp Celebrates. And we do have when the staff member arrives, we do have a staff member that we're also going to be recognizing tonight as part of Canton Celebrates. I do also want to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Depo and Dr. Kidwell for having an outstanding start to the Kent High School school year. The the high school's

009been off to a tremendous start and you're going to be able to see it tonight with the staff that are here to present some of the outstanding things going on and the students that we're here to honor. And then following some of the reports, you'll also be able to hear the great things about the Ken Ken High School continues to improve plan, which we'll talk about a little bit. So I know for this time for Ken Celebrates, Mr. Daniels and I are going to go out into the audience and shake people's hands as Mr. Po and Dr. Kidwell are introducing our outstanding students and staff. Thank you, Mr. Pipple. Thank you, Dr. Gman. And I look forward to uh presenting some of the great news that's happening here at Kent High School this year. It's

010early in our year. Um so, as we look to celebrate, uh we both have a few individuals that deserve some recognition as well as a group of students who year in and year out have made us proud uh with their workings uh in school and in the community, and they certainly deserve recognition tonight. The first person I'd like to call to the podium is uh Janelle Gad. >> So for those who don't know Janelle, she's outstanding student and athlete here at Kent High School. And tonight she's being recognized um for receiving a letter of commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program. She's a commended student and therefore she's recognized for her exceptional academic promise as she is among the top five% of of more than 1.6 million students who took the PSAT test last uh

011October which she then qualified for this award. So based on this she is amongst approximately 34,000 uh 34,000 commended students nationwide. So she's one of 134,000 in our nation who have shown this academic promise. So we are so thrilled to have her here to recognize this. But she's also like many of our students incredible in our school community um outside of her academic prowess. Uh she's an integral part of our field hockey team. >> Good job. >> And she was an all state player last year. Um she's also on our lacrosse team where she was an all league player last year. She plays piano in our jazz band and she plays clarinet in our school band as well as being uh amongst uh many of our honor societies. So truly a triple threat and we're

012just so happy to be representing her tonight for all of that. Congratulations. So to join me at the podium, I'd like to call um two of our outstanding teachers, Mesini. And then in the crowd, I'd like to also call uh several students to um talk about our service organizations and certainly uh give some recognition uh for those students who are able to be here tonight. Alan Chico, I see you. Why don't you come forward? Maya, I see you over here. You can come forward. Charlotte, I see you over here. Ali, if you could join us as well. Okay. All right. So, um, welcome and let me explain a little bit what's going on here tonight. Um, four other students, uh, could not be here because they are playing in the senior night soccer game tonight.

013So, that would be Braden Klein, Cooper Brown, Owen Quist, and Luke Melich, and Mia L could not join us either. Um, but I really want to assure that that this group receives some recognition. I need um to to lay some context out for what they're being awarded for and also allow for um both Miss HSN and Miss Mania to have some words on their behalf. Um I think Canton as a as a community believe strongly in service and believe strongly in supporting our community and other communities as best we can. Um in our strategic plan, in our continuous improvement plan, we talk about learning environment and belonging. And I always believe and I've said this to anyone willing to listen that I believe one of the things I'm most proud about is at K High

014School students have opportunities to do many things and they can always find something um that they're passionate about. And what separates these students tonight is their passion about giving and giving to others. We have several honor societies in art, music, math, science, and social studies that give to our community through educational programs to younger groups. Um we have the Rotary Club. We have an international club that also branch out into broader communities um as um service organizations. Um we also have our athletes um who um provide service um with awareness or raising funds or food um as we begin our holiday season. Um they'll work hard to do a food drive um around Thanksgiving. But these groups um basically commit a year for for the entire year to find service opportunities within our town. So

015I'm referring to our kata which is our kin adolescence taking action. I'm referring to our legal club as well as our national honor society. So I brought forward several groups to the board before. I brought athletic leadership. I brought members of our drama club. I've brought our music folks forward. But I thought it was very important for us to understand there's a whole branch or wing in our school that doesn't really get public recognition. And these uh students are really sort of under the radar from the public side of things. They're not out in front on on the athletic field in in the band necessarily or or in the drama production, but on weekends after school with the support of our great advisors, um they're doing wonderful things for our community. I want you to

016hear more about that from our leaders um this agent and Miss Mancini and then we'll uh make sure that uh these folks are recognized by name. So we have a brief PowerPoint that's going to show a little bit of some of the things that they do. Um and then again we'll speak about the students that way. So, hi, I'm Mrs. and along with Miss Aes. Um, we're the advisors for the Leo Club. We meet weekly. So, every Friday we meet um and our focus is just on projects to help the community. So, we just highlighted a couple of our big events that we do throughout the year. So, one of them is um we have every veteran that's registered with the town that we provide a bow with a message of thank you for Veterans

017Day. So with the town, it's almost 300 ribbons that we deliver to mailboxes every November. So I think four years, four years that we've been delivering ribbons. Um, another one of our big ongoing projects is we've been um collecting crayons that are broken and we make them into molds and milk them and then package them and we've been donating them to a community a women's shelter that serves women and children. So, we've been donating and so that's a picture of the kids like we it takes a long time to unwrap and mix and break and let that Yeah. Um, we also do a number of different events that you can see. We have a good relationship with the town of Canton Park and Recck Department. So, when they're doing a lot of events, they'll call

018us up and ask us if they can um, you know, we have some students that that can help out. Um, we've also collected for the Canton Food Bank during the Super Bowl. Um, done an eye glass, just a number of different different events. Um, I'm also the adviser for National Honor Society. And throughout the National Honor Society, again, we do projects to help within our community, within the school, and then outside of our community. So, this past year, we had our first pie. So, we tried to get kids involved in joy of math, exercising. Um, we do a read across America with Cherry Brooks. So, our seniors go there and read to the classes, which is really a fun time. Um we've sponsored a holiday bear which is through the CA. They have um students

019that they put forward that need assistance and so for the last this will be our third year we sponsor students through the holiday bear. So we buy gifts and donate to them. Um we've also organized a district-wide craft collection for Beans Craft Planner in um honor of Miss Sedan's daughter who passed away from leukemia. They have us um cancer board set up where there's a craft area for children and some of our other things that we do throughout the year. We've run blood drives. Um we volunteered at the quality street fair in town. So we tutor with the middle school every week. We have um volunteered at the Burlington Collinsville TK. We worked with the senior center a lot. And unlike Leo and they actually like write down how many hours like you guys probably

020do more hours than some of our National Honor Society people, but here we log them. So last year we logged over 500 hours as a club of giving service back, which I thought was pretty impressive. All right, so I'm um the adviser for Kata, which Dr. Gman and I actually started when he was assistant principal at the high school. So One of um one of the things that we really enjoy is going to the community center and playing big. We are scheduled to go on November 13th this year. Um they're very competitive at the senior center. They do bet for money. Um but it's a great time to to really have the senior citizens and the and the um students work together. Um right now we're in the process of making kindness rocks. That is

021a picture taken just like last week in my classroom. And you can see that how many students are showing up on a Thursday morning to do community service on a daily basis. I have more students than I have guests, which is a wonderful problem to have. Um so those tags will be placed around town in the coming weeks. Um every year we have a winter clothing drive. You can see how many bags of clothes were brought to the camped food bank to be given out last year. Um so that is a yearly event. And then um we last year started filling some of the little libraries around town. Um we collected books and we started um supplementing that in the upper right hand corner. Those are coloring books that we made that are donated to

022the shelter with the crayons from Leo Club. So we have coloring booksmies crayons that Leo puts together and we bring it to the um women shelter in Quarington and they look forward to it every year. um in the upper leftand corner, those are just some of the gift cards that we collect through with um gifts of canon, gifts for campen um and just on a number of other different events. Um these students are amazing. So um as we're stating there there's three service organizations being represented here national society and there's probably upwards of six or 70 students involved in in total um and when I met with Miss Mancini and Mson what they wanted to do tonight was honor the leadership or the leaders um that that do the work and continuously show up to

023get the work done. So that's where those 10 names came from. And so we're especially grateful to your work. We especially appreciate all that you do, not just on behalf of the school, but to your families, the way that you really appreciate all certainly role models that I think we as adults look to you to. So thank you for that. So we'll try to get these correct, but first we have Ali Mitten who is website as part of the video. >> Charlotte Crawford is part of the club as well. Jeremiah my son who's part of the national society member of Canada All right. pictures of all the kids together and the teacher. So, come on over. Come on over. You guys want to come down? Thank you guys. If I could, I' I'd just like

024to say to our students, it was so impressive to see all the things that you do. Um, and all the ways that you help our community and you help others and that is so impressive. We know that you do certain things, but seeing it all up there collectively was phenomenal. And thank you for your service and all the things you can do. I know your grandfather in particular, service above self is is a ro a rotary motto and clearly you guys have done that. I'd like to thank our our teachers for what you do because you put in the time and you're teaching them what kindness and generosity and being part of a community is. So, thank you for your time and thank you to our administrators that support that and fan that fire and

025that flame. And to the parents and friends and grandparents, thank you for being great role models to your children because they don't just learn this and it happens. They see it at home. They see what you do and how you represent yourself. So, thank you. Keep doing that. Keep doing what you're doing. We have a wonderful community in Canton. We have a wonderful school system. And I want to thank you all for for being here tonight. So five more minutes because we got one more award that we want to give out. So if everybody can stick around in You want the first Okay, so we're back. So, I'm so excited tonight uh to be speaking uh about one of our teachers, one of our great teachers here. So, I'm gonna just cut to it. I'm

026invite Miss Nora Marski to uh front and center to be here. Special welcome to the entire clan for joining us tonight. Hope is wonderful. So, uh tonight is a very special recognition tonight. Um as one of our teachers, Miss Marowski is being granted a wonderful award. Um she's being um given the 200 uh 2025 Connecticut history teacher of the year as chosen by the Gilbert Institute of American History. Again, this is a national recognition on a state level for a local teacher. Congratulations, Nora. So we have some words uh to explain a little bit more. Um for those of us who might not know, not everyone will know this, the Gilder Lman Institute of American History was founded in 1994 uh by Richard Gilder, Lewis and Louisman. They were visionaries and lifelong supporters of American

027history education. The institute is a living nonprofit nonpartisan organization dedicated to K12 history education while also serving the general public. Its mission is to promote the knowledge and understanding of American history through educational programs and resources. So this institute actually touches millions of students directly and indirectly through their programming, through their educational opportunities, through work with teachers, through professional development, through um um their documents, through things that they keep sacred that we can all on the public side um learn from and um connect with. So beginning in 2004, um this institute began to recognize excellent in teaching of the history at a K12 level. So each year thousands of teachers are nominated by students, parents and fellow teachers or community members and this is to shine a light on on the work they do for

028all public school students. So we at K High School know Laura well as she's been our department chair since 2006 and during this time Miss Mo has provided an outstanding classroom environment. She's an amazing instructor. She's a leader of teachers. She's a tireless advocate for students in all of their opportunities, all their opportunities. And I think what we've come to know about her is she's absolutely passionate about social studies and citizenship. And in fact, for those of you who may not know, she was for all these reasons, she was our 2019 teacher of the year. So in a lot of ways, um, this parallels that journey is being recognized even further for some of this great work that was being done. So, I have many other things to say, but I also want to recognize

029Mr. S. Armstrong, who's here tonight from State Department of Education. Uh, he is a the social studies consultant for the state department of education. He knows Norah well through their work together on the Connecticut Council of Social Studies. And I know he would like to say some words about Norah as well if you don't mind. Thank you, Mr. just um for the record and I know he knows I'm going to do this but your superintendent here. I remember him as I was I'm aging maybe we're both aging ourselves horribly here when I was a teacher at Manchester High School. I remember a student at Manchester High School standing in this room stars. >> This part this part by the way I was paid to say he was a brilliant child. No, good to see you.

030And I just want to say real briefly um the Gilder Lairman is again as was said is the top um social studies history teacher in the state. uh we had nominations and I I just want to tell you that a lot of years we have nominations and the the decision we have a committee by the way teachers administrators that look at all the applications and things and a lot of years it's torturous to pick this out. I mean, you know, we we don't know who should win. Maybe this guy, maybe this moment. But, oddly enough, I say this with honesty, this year the um selection process took a total of seven minutes that the committee um in seven minutes decided, you know, they all read the all the stuff ahead of time and there was

031no doubt it was. and I've worked with Nora on many projects, curriculum projects, social studies projects, but uh you have a great future and you've got a great leader here. So, I'd like to congratulate History Teacher of the Year approved by the Global Learn Institute of America. >> Thank you, Steve. Sure. Thank you. >> You're more than welcome to say >> I do want to thank my colleagues in the department. Tim Tim O'Donnell nominated me for this position, for this opportunity. Um, and I do have to say I've been here, as as uh Drew said, since 2006. By far, it's the best place to teach. Every day I come here with pure joy in my heart. I love working with the kids. I love my profession and there's nothing else I'd rather do. So I

032really do appreciate the opportunity um that and your time as board members because I know um how much time is involved in this process and uh you should be proud. I am very proud of the students that graduate this community and it's a wonderful place to teach. Thank you. with the whole board and then we'll do the whole What are we building? Okay, the whole Excellent. What's up? Thank you. No, I am. >> You're good. Thank you. >> Thanks. This is kind of how I get how you do it. >> All right. I don't know what a brick and the bricks have been. Okay, that was great. And thank you, Drew. Thank you. Thank you both. I appreciate great team and we have great teachers, great staff. I just get so excited when I get

033a chance to do this stuff. So, all right. Uh, now we can move to the chairman's corner. Uh, all I have for everybody is to remind them about the tri board meeting that will take place on 10:20. It's Monday, a week this coming Monday at 6 PM. It's an official It's an official board of education meeting. We call it order. At that time, uh we'll get some um conversation and advice from the board of finance of where they think the direction of the uh the budget would be going. Uh we might even get some thoughts on you know the ranges of where we should be. So it's an important meeting uh for all of us to be in attendance for uh to hear from the board of of the board of finance board select will

034also be there obviously. Um other than that um I would just say that there's some great events coming. You heard it from Jonathan Hall. Anytime a board member can be at some of these events, whether it be a prison concert or uh I think we have the football Friday night lights coming up on the 24th uh concerts. I think there's a Disney concert that's going to be this Saturday, I think. Right. Anytime we can be there to walk through, just show our support. I know it means a lot for teachers and it means a lot to the kids. So, I would just encourage you to do that. That that's all really I have. Anybody has any questions of the chair? >> I had a quick question. >> So, I know that at our retreat it

035was discussed that we were going to be sent it and it's noted in our notes from the retreat that the board survey was going to be resent. Can you just speak to the status of that? Yeah. So, I you know, I decided at my discretion that because there's going to be a little bit of a changeover with the board, uh that I was going to hold off on that um on the survey and wait till next year. >> Okay. So, is it because it's an election year that we're waiting or so? We didn't get the participation the first time out of the gate and I I could take that and share that results with you, but I decided I'm not going to redo the survey and we'll do it at the end of uh next

036year again. We're going to change it around a little bit. I'm going to put a committee together to maybe review the questions, make it a little bit more pertinent. >> Okay. All right. Thank you for that. >> I'm glad to share the results of the five people that participated. I I participated twice. Is that is this the given retreat? >> Yes, that's it. >> Additional information. >> That's it. >> No, I really just had a question because we're going to approve the minutes and it and it does say in in the minutes that it was going to be sent out again in midepptember. So, I I just I really want these minutes to reflect the change. Yeah. >> Well, these minutes will reflect the change. >> Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Thank

037you. Any other questions? >> Okay, let's go to superintendent announcements. >> Super. Thank you, Mr. Daniels. It's good to see everyone and I'm excited that you'll be able to hear Mr. and Dr. Kidwell again looking around. Almost every board member was able to hear the report last week. So, the board members that were not here the last week, you'll hear a little bit of an update. And if you want more of a personal meeting with Mr. Pipple or Dr. can move to the ranch. That was no problem. It it was just a a great visit. And part of that visit was getting an update from Mrs. Antinucci regarding the music program and what we're doing K through 12. And it's just a wonderful aspect of of the town of Canton and the sport that we

038have for the arts in this town really came true uh through her presentation. the the counseling team. I had the opportunity last week to walk through the high school to see the the college fair and it's always exciting to see our kids faces when they're walking around the the room, our juniors and seniors on the idea of that there is a life outside the walls of K High School when they graduate. And not only did we have the colleges there, but we had representative from the armed forces where they were also and I know our council team is also working with kids that are not choosing to go to a form of higher education. So, we're really planning that and I do got to commend the the whole counseling office for putting that together. Speaking

039about music, I want to touch base on athletics. It it's been a long time since I've seen the enthusiasm about around athletics within the camp public schools and it's certainly led by our hire of our athletic director, Mr. Gwen. He has just pumped a lot of energy and excitement into our athletic department. Our teams, if you saw, are winning on the field and off the field because they're doing community service projects. also, but just seeing the spirit that is out there right now with our teams. For those of you that did not read the Harford Current, the Harford Current did a feature on our boys soccer team yesterday, Laura Riley. And Laura Riley's a very highly respected writer, sports writer for the Harvard Current. So to get an article featured by her is something truly

040special and I thank her for doing that and I thank our team for their willingness to participate in an article on that. But all our teams are doing tremendously well and I believe every team has qualified for our uh state our the state championships. they qualified for that the tournament and I know our athletic director even went to the senior day for our cross country teams the other day. So I I just wanted to provide an update relative to to our athletics. Budget season has begun that I will be meeting with administrators in the next couple weeks to look at their budgets and really start analyzing their budgets to present to you a forecasted budget in December. And again, that is unusual that a superintendent presents a forecast budget where a superintendent is at this

041moment in time in December just to give that you and the community where I am in December and then we'll work through those numbers. I'll present those numbers to the the board of finance and then we'll come back in January, February, present you the final administrative budget. I do want to remind the board that next Friday night after six I think it's sixy year hiatus we will be inducting the class for the Kent high school wall of fame. She's here so I'm going to let her know Dr. Chipwell has done a a great job partnering uh with the superintendent's office and really putting this together. This is going to be a touching event. We have six inductees that are being honored next week. Mrs. will send you out a list of the infectes this Friday

042as part of my update. But if you could spend some time on Friday at 4:30, we're going to have some appetizers and social time from 4:30 to 5 and then that's in the high school cafeteria and then we are going to start the induction ceremony which is completely studentled and that will start at 5:00 in the auditorium. And we're we're expecting over 100 people to walk through our our hallways next Friday night of graduates from the 1950s. There there's gentlemen that are coming that are in their mid 90s um next week. And then we have some graduates that were in the 2000s that that are coming next week. So, it's exciting. It was one of this superintendent's goals to make sure that we brought that back because I pride myself on things that have fidelity

043and that's something that we we're not going to sit here 25 years from now but that wall of fame should be sitting here 25 years from now as long as can high school exist and I anticipate that it will be and as Mr. Understand the board finance meeting is track board is on Monday and the next board of education meeting is Tuesday November 11th. I'll take any questions any questions. >> Will the wall of fame be every year? We'll be >> we'll be handing out nomination forms next week for next year's class and we just keep everything in the notebook and the past recipients we choose 10 to 12 past recipients to be that committee. So it's Kent High School alumni decide who's going to get uh inducted in the Kent High School Hall of

044Fame. And it's not just for athletics, it's for leadership, outstanding contributions to your community. It it just encompasses everything that we're trying to do with our students that are graduating from campus school. Great. Any other questions for the superintendent? Okay. Anything else, Dr. >> Okay. Thank you. Uh on to the assistant superintendent, Mr. Bishop. >> Thank you very much, Mr. Daniels. Um October is an exciting uh exciting time. Um our 101 our October 1st date is when uh numbers become official within schools uh in the state of Connecticut. So what I'm pleased to be able to share with you right now is uh a little bit of a look back to where we thought we were going to be in December and where we actually end ourselves being now on October 1st. So it gives

045you a little bit of a perspective on how the um how our projections have worked. Um again, if you'll recall, we work with two different organizations to be able to support us. One is NASDAQ, um who does uh some demographic work for us and then does projections for us. And then Peter Proud is another local uh provider for us who works with us as well to be able to provide information for us. That information will be um coming forward, we believe, by the end of November. So, I expect to be able to have another projected update ready to go as we get into budget season. Uh so then without f any further ado, I'll go ahead and start right from the top and move ourselves through. The chart itself is organized around the uh different

046grade levels uh and configurations of our schools. We start with Cherburg Primary School. And >> is that going to go up on the board for folks to see or No, >> I I don't have it for Kier to be able to put it up. >> We have any extra copies. We have plenty of extra copies like that's good. Thanks for follow. So in the left hand column you'll see our projection as a 1212 that was utilizing projected numbers from uh Peter Praa and from NAZD to come come together to be able to provide for us. You'll notice a little plus sign right there by the kindergarten um projection of 85 students. You'll recall that was based on the number of students that had pre-registered at that point. We were going off of actual information to

047be able to to drive our numbers at that point. So moving over to the right hand side you'll see our actual numbers. So we we anticipated of 44 students is 37 students for preschool. Um for the kindergarten we actually moved from 85 to 106. We moved from 82 in first grade to 84. 101 was our projection for second grade. We yielded 106. In the third grade we had 95. yielded 94 at chair group. That leaves us with a total of 427 students. I'd love to be able to compliment us for the projection work that we did. Um because we it was pretty accurate for the most part. Um although interesting to be able to see that we're we're growing in some areas and there are some demographics that are shrinking in other areas. Any questions

048on cherry grow? Okay, we'll move on down to intermediate school. So again, same pattern. You'll also note that there's the number of class sections because of the way the classes are organized and operate at these grade levels. It's helpful to be able to know how many sections or partnerships there are. So six sections and 112 total students is what we are projecting for fourth grade. We yielded 114. In fifth grade, we projected 105. We yielded 101. count. In sixth grade, we predicted 118. We yielded 124. In intermediate school came out with a total enrollment of 339. You'll notice as well along the right side the average class size. All that is is it takes the number of students divided by the number of sections and that yields the approximate class size for us. You'll notice

049that there are no fractions because or no decimals because we don't have decimals of students, but we will range from uh 20 to 21 or 16 to 17. Down on the bottom, you'll see the class size guidance that has existed for uh public schools for a number of any questions for me from school. >> There was one grade was a primary school that was of concern so we kept it. That was third grade. >> Are we going to use them moving forward? >> The plan is to use NASDAQ. Again, um what we found in this last round was it was helpful to be able to see which ones were in agreement with each other and where there was a disalignment from them. And particularly in kindergarten numbers, that's where we said if they're so far

050out of alignment, we need to step back and we're going to only use the um the numbers that we have as actual that are coming from pre-registration. So we'll continue to use both of those to help triangulate the data for us. >> So it's really only just kindergarten numbers. >> Correct. >> Everything else tends to be able to be relatively consistent with that. There are some things that will be a little bit different. I would say well I could I could go on about hey the middle school um in seventh and eighth grade we thought that it would be 111 and 96 a piece we ended up yielding 115 and 101 so the middle school a little bit for a total of 216 and then at the high school level it was a projection of

051111 1114 100 and uh we did pretty pretty well overall. Our freshman was a little bit down and that's not a total surprise for us to be able to have a little bit of a decrease as we transition from a bus stop to a to a bus stop. Um our sophomores went up by two and then state even for our juniors and seniors in high school yielded 429 total students. >> Go ahead, John. Could you give us uh and maybe next time you may not have it but I'm just curious on the choice students by grade >> I think I will be able to provide that update as well. >> We'll do that in the budget. >> I just said to Mr. Daniels that the open choice if you recall for our budget we do

052a whole open choice enrollment what we had what we predict in the the future. So that is part of our budget process. So you look at that December, January, January. >> Is it fair to say other meetings we've had that the apartments because there's speculation people ask that's not really a contributing factor? >> No, it's not. And every year we tend to do um an analysis by um by address to be able to help with that. And it's a very very low yield from those places. consistent with over the past three or four years, the information that we've heard from our demographers is that um the apartments and the structures that they have here in town do not tend to yield a great number of students from that. >> I think I think I've heard

053that the um ones behind the mini golf course I can't see was like seven. >> It's it's definitely single digits and I believe it's definitely single digits. So I would have to go back and look at the exact number. >> Anything else? >> That's it for me. There are there are many different perceptions that are out there already. >> Questions on >> why was the how did people just move into the area for >> that? That's a good question. this was um and and if I knew the answer then I would probably be doing some demographic work and I'd be doing pretty well with it. I think this year in particular was a challenging one because there was a variance based on the um the enrollment date that was out there for for uh children

054but also coming out of COVID uh and uh co burst with that as well too. So, it was just it was a very interesting time to be able to try to be able to make uh make a determination for. If you recall a couple years ago, we had thought that this actually might be a group of 130 or so based on preliminary projections from NASDAQ. I think three years or so based on the number of children who were actually born in the area. So, there was there's some variability for sure. It could be interesting because with interest rates coming down, people want to either move up or buy their first home. There's there's more likely this this should be interesting on how we uh well so forecast. Well, the one thing that I've learned because

055this is four years in a row for me. two in my prior district and I'm two in Cant and uh the Nest can probably report just in provide the most accurate information but it's always good to have data to support your decision. The best data that we received was Chart did an outstanding job last year calling all the preschools, calling every individual, sending letters out. John's office was sending letters out and we really just like hand counting what was living in town and what was coming and that's how we landed on the number. But I'm going to, as you know, this was a very difficult one this summer because I really thought probably left the for our last board meeting in June that I was going to have to call a special meeting to let

056you all know in the summer that I was going to have to add a kindergarten section. And right now I've been playing kindergarten classrooms. Our children are doing just fine and our teachers and our pair professionals are doing a wonderful job with our second learners because all our preschool children now are at Sherro too which is just a wonderful addition over there. Any other questions for Mr. Bishop? Okay, moving right on. Right along we go to business report. Mr. Robins, >> thank you. >> Good evening. Um, this evening we are reporting on the um forecast for September um 2025. As of um September 30th of 2025, the overall forecast is unfavorable 170,488. General education is forecasted with a positive um positively at 21875. Um we have the exception of our BAC tuition. Um with that

057exception most of the variances are in salaries and benefits and that is to be expected isn't um the movement in almost every labor group in the district since this budget was um constructed. Special education is forecasted to be unfavorable 192 362. Um there's unfavorable variances, special education, um proposed um some changes in out of district transportation, transportation and tuition, but those are offset by um some slight variances um positive variances in revenue forecast for tuition from other counts. Um we are we don't have our final numbers in for regular education transportation, but we're expecting some variances there based on the construction in town and the need for vehicles um to um going down streets that regular buses can't make it down in order to get students home. So we'll see what that looks like in

058a few more weeks. Um but um you know one of the notable things um on this report is the introduction of um bridges our new um special education program as a line item on our financial statements. Um we budgeted a savings of $55,000 in the last um budget cycle. Um so that is represented in the statement as well and it is now a little bit of increased budget. by another $50,000 um due to a state grant which was awarded to support that investment in the new program. So very excited about that. This is just the start for that program and already um we're you know seeing some great results and just working through all the parts and pieces of having a new program with outside revenues um in vendors. Um but it's an exciting time.

059Um and >> yes, >> is that 50,000 is that part of the 30 million that the governor put out there was yes >> as we predicted that they just did the formula to divide it up with 169 shorts for the winter to give a update where we are with purchase. I also want to remind the boarding date for the bridges grand opening next >> October 20th >> 4 to five and we'll put that in our report again this Friday. So um moving on the special education uh tution and transportation um these categories are over budget and they include several new students who join the camp community towards the end of August. Um the um increase in that over budget condition is offset by some um revenue from other towns. Um and during the preparation of

060um these counts, the district learned of um additional changes in enrollments that we will see significantly impact next next month's report. Um the other line items in special education include savings in certified non-certified staff um to recent hiring and the change in student needs and um we did have some um additional needs and purchase services based on student needs. So, um that's um that is our September report. Um very very early um in the fiscal year. School's only been in session for basically one month. So hopefully give you some additional and more in depth analysis as we go along. >> Thank you for that report. Any questions for Joe? Are we fully staffed professional encounter? >> We were fully staffed professional and noncertified staff or we are not now. The high school in the past

061three weeks has taken a hit on non-certified staff. We're doing very well at the elementary level, but the high school has taken um some hits the past two or three weeks non-certified. And then we're down a occupational occupational therapists. Occupational therapists are specialized that we've been looking now for a year. We haven't been able to find one and that's why we have to contract for outside services since that's one of the larger overage that we have in our budget. Bridges program is for Bridges program is we have children from elementary all the way through high school and we have camp students there and we now have is it five five students from out of district that we're charging them tuition >> located Thank you. Other questions on the finance report should Okay. Uh I'll take

062a motion then the camp board of education approved the camp I'm sorry Board of Education approved the September 2025 financials as presented. Thank you Erica. Second. Thank you Russell. Any questions comments? All right we have a motion. Can board of education approve the September 25 financials as presented? All those in favor I thank the commission. >> So it's at 7%. Thank you. >> 80. Thank you very much. Okay. Um now we'll go to the continuous improvement plan. I'm sorry that I missed the meeting on um Thursday. I understand it was uh exceptional. Uh Mr. Dipo provided me the presentation, saw some great things that are going on. So, do you want >> Yeah, I just want to tee this up a little bit. So, we saw a wonderful presentation by Mr. is going to talk

063briefly about the continuous improvement plan and then Mr. If you could just a second too because the board of ed has in the packet to review and approve the the trip to uh Greece. This is not anything that the board needs to approve, but I'm asking for approval for the grease strip because it's one that is out of the country. So, I'd like the board to approve that. So, Mr. wouldn't mind tying that up into the end of your presentation. to get all of my >> Sure. Um so first of all, thank all of you that I know took the time um to make the effort um to join us last week um for a nice walk through and opportunity to speak in depth about our two areas. I'm very proud about what's going on

064at Kent High School over the course of the last year. most tenants of the police improvement plan or that were moving in the right direction. Moreover, um as discussed that that evening or that morning, you know, some of some of our highlights are truly highlights. Um if you look at our standardized scores in both ELA and science, they're they're truly the highest 10% of the state. Um science being the highest. Um and you know that is due to a lot of hard work both in our with our teachers and their everyday work. uh but also and as important in the process of of identifying students who are struggling and having an ongoing process to work not only with students independently but work within the curricular components to move um the curriculum in better ways to

065meet the needs. So it is an eb and flow push and pull of moving forward taking a moment to understand where we are and then sort of reframing again to move forward all with the constraints of the curriculum um you know um joined up uh in that way. So uh you know those are certainly highlights. Another highlight that that I didn't mention a little bit was just supporting the board and the areas um that I I think are are flourishing this year. Um you know athletics as Dr. said, you know, support for that dual position um to support our health and PE staff as well as our athletic department has been wonderful. Um we see that we see some of the growth in our athletic department, some of the energy back, but also it's been

066really sound support for our health and teachers K12. Um I think we'll see the merits of that, you know, outgoing moving forward. really appreciative of of the security position that was added. um that has really just helped like even part of me saying I should be outside but they have an extra security monitor just being outside and that helps the um you know the athletic director or the administrator who is there as um just site supervisor you know having another security person you're you're seeing the bigger picture something has happened you have another person to support you um support that that role so those are are two wonderful things um that have helped So um you know that speaks to some of the highlights um throughout I shared the CIP um with the entire board

067as part of the packet. Um I can go over some highlights that are new um that more connect with the strategic plan and I just want to say this has really been helpful to administration to be in line with your thinking a little bit. we had been working within this this uh continuous improvement plan of these six indicators and felt that you know we were moving in the right direction you know K12 but to to see it writer from the board's perspective some global things um that you found relevant important we able to attach some of those ideas so if you could just advance that slide in one way um you know the I wanted to bow to partnerships and community engagement um you know we've had a booster club here tonight and I just

068want to say whether it's our people on the ground um your vision for working with the community I feel like the partnerships have just really escalated the last few years I know Brian's position has has been reconnected with the booster club the friends of the arts in this dual environment of of helping both our drama theater as well as our um our music program coming together with fundraising um with support of students um you know there just a clear line of communication. So those are all really positive things that are happening and again to see in the strategic plan it it just you're sort of say that that's something we want to continue um as we move forward. >> No J if I could just say sure I'm community development relationship example is what happened

069here tonight those with those clubs and those kids and the amount of service that that you're sending out into the field is just so impressive. A eight plus that so >> really good. >> Thank you for saying that. I agree. Um so uh Jordan mentioned about the trip. So I'm increasing equity. Um you know one of your goals was continue opportunities for students to to involve themselves in cultural exchanges or opportunities to be involved in initiatives involved in international and international travel. So, you know, it seems to me like this is this is an opportunity again as that ongoing um what we what we've been working internally with is to not sort of um roll into um the the Disney year which is every third year um as um Rachel was able to speak to

070the board about um last week. So the hope is that every you know second and third year or first and second year outside of those years that we'd be willing to support um international travel. So this year we're talking about Greece for years and years. It was a world language trip. A world language trip. And essentially because our language was Spanish, you were going to like uh somewhere in and around Spain, some circuit that might involve, you know, from east to west or north to south. um five or six spots in Spain that over that April vacation um with a new teacher Angela Shack who's come forth from Bristol a few years ago. She had this mantra to continue the international travel. She brought energy with it but she partnered with Marshall Mastercola to kind

071of create more of a humanities style trip where educational elements were involved. So, so what you'll see moving forward is not necessarily Spanish countries but but potentially you know Italy, London, you know areas around central Europe potentially as well. So this year, you know, the idea of going on a CNC in Greece um basically through um some excursions on boats to get from island to Ireland um uh to involve themselves in the culture, the music, um the science in each and every stop around the water um as well as components of uh the ruins. So it's really interesting that uh that they're taking on this stack. They have 24 students. I believe last year we had 19. Um so I think that was sort of our first back. I feel like it might grow a

072little bit in the coming years. And um we did get a lot of um interested with some of our younger students. Years ago it was seen as a um a upper class privilege um to ensure that that we almost had a waiting uh the waiting room students wanted to take the trip. So we waited till they were junior senior year. We've had conversations about the best the best way to approach it but but again to try to make sure we build a trip. We involved some younger students last year and we had a lot of success. So these experiences I think speak for themselves opportunity to be in another another part of the world and see um you know all that that culture has to offer is amazing. Um it is on a security level

073is the most level. Um so we're going to get very good about you know some unless obviously if that ever change you know speak to all of us but right now it's a very very safe trip in that part of the world question about that >> can we just take questions on that on the trip questions on the trip >> questions on the trip >> what is the situation >> yeah so for every six students there's one Shack for international trip. Um so we right now the idea is we have 24 students and 64 who are committed to go. >> So when does it go out to the students? Has it been out? >> Well, we have a wait for overall approval and so so those teachers met with me this morning when I walked

074into a 7:05 to say we really like to put this out tomorrow morning. Do you think that'll be okay? I said I'll let you go tomorrow morning. Yeah. So the idea is that they are chopping up the bit to um get get the word out. It's about 18 months from now. Um so the idea is to to help families um prepare you know financially and so the more time they give there's payment plans um opportunities. there going to be a couple fundraisers and um so that opportunity to put you know hundreds of dollars away per month is something that families have value um so they can get to the number that this trip was given to me in June and I wasn't going to put it on my June agenda because I needed some time

075to really reflect upon this trip first time that I've seen a grease trip and I needed to do my own homework and I needed to come back through the pimple a little bit in the group that there needed to the fundraising involved in this one to have children have the opportunity to go out and raise funds if they change the proposal that there is fundraising involved in this trip and it does allow 17 months as M said for them to do but I know children are have been spoken to so it's essentially then it'll be 10th graders juniors there will be seniors when this trip goes on correct >> so I'm wondering if we should take that except before Mr. continues. Should we take that vote now or wait or have to change the He's

076almost done. >> Are you almost done? >> Yeah. So, just one of our other pieces that we're really proud of to end the year last year was just bringing the school back together for some different kinds of celebrations to whole school assemblies. um you know doesn't seem like something earthshattering but it was just a way for us to actually celebrate people for a variety of different things. We want to keep that pattern moving forward. Just looking for different ways to celebrate students, celebrate staff um for things that might not just be always out there in a parent and even even like tonight just making sure that the whole community is celebrating um some of those students, some of those endeavors. So we're really looking to keep that going as one of our goals throughout the

077the year. We're coming together next week for our game day and our spirit week and that's also its own way of celebrating student body and building community. Um so we're just looking for more and more opportunities to move that forward and build on what we started over the last couple of years. >> Yeah. So that's a good way to finish. You know, again, the CIP is certainly aligned with your strategic plan almost, you know, not bullet by bullet, but you know, broadly trying to connect to the biggest ideas and um you know, very proud of a lot of things that are happening at high school. We're off to a great start and um you know, look forward to March to talk through some of the data points that we know at that point. um hopefully

078to repeat a lot of the things that happened this year processes and then answer questions you might have about the CIP >> questions for Dr. Any questions? So I'd like to know so what's your expect I mean you had some very impressive numbers. So what what what are you what are you forecasting for March? What do you think? >> So yeah I I feel like you know the to be first in the state is in some we have to be here for science. So I don't want to talk about our science at GSS. So I I really feel like you know our process is sound. I think in in all three phases math, ELA and science. So the process is sound. Um and I think we benefited for the last two years um in ELA

079and science to see an escalation of that use of data understanding students are um and working with students in the curriculum. So, I just think we'll stay somewhat consistent in that in a small school. You know, a couple students go one way or the other could affect our overall percentage. >> Do you have concerns? I mean, is there a place that we should be shoring up? I know we talk about math all the time, math coaches, math tutors. >> I think part of it, you know, tomorrow is our actual PSAT day. So, very quickly after that, we'll be able to get really in the moment data for all of his grade levels, the juniors. So then to be able to kind of put those action steps into place. >> It's much quicker than it used

080to be. >> Sure that >> you keep analy >> because they need to analyze it with their team first. I'm sure the teachers we'll cut a deal. >> Yes. Walk through the high school for the high school and what comes through every time. First of all, it's the uh presentation that's great music program realize that the volume of participation the quality especially in the small school was great to hear from her. Great to see what she gets to do. But there's a a a sense of purpose, a sense of calmness, a sense of engagement that just permeates the building. We're not teaching. I guess I had one question. Of the six areas there, the six goal areas plans, which one is the the one you feel needs needs the most work? >> I'm sorry, I

081didn't preach anything. I mean an easy answer, right? Might be some of the academic achievements that we know about sports, right? Say we're looking at at those pieces. Um so that's sort of hopefully looking through. >> Well, you know, that was if you'd asked me the question, that would be the answer I've given and it was impressive to hear you address that, not try to gloss it over a barrier to address something you're concerned about and you're continuing to work on. appreciate the support we've been provided in. So, thank you for it was really a good morning. >> You're welcome. >> It's high praise for somebody that's walked these halls for many years, many, many years. Thank you. Any other questions? Thanks for being here tonight. We'll take that vote on the trip right now

082once it's on. Um, so may I have a motion that the K board of education approve K high school trip to Greece on April 9th on April 9th through the 17th, 2027? I'll take a motion. Thank you, Michelle. Second. Thank you, Erica. Um, any other discussion? I I just have a question like how how are the how do you keep the students safe you know like at night sleeping in a local like what's the what's the protocol for that? >> Sure. So there's um I actually have been on a few trips. So you know there's essential protocols as simple as you know doing you know walkounds in the evening in the mornings putting tape on the door to ensure that you know the tape isn't broken doing at various spots at different times. It's almost

083you know six people it's it's one for six really $1. So it's not a by stretch really things you know all the programs are sort of um you walk together um you know counting by six like making sure that you have your people so it is it is you know supervision but it's diligent supervision and um you know and I have to say and the teachers say this it was my experiences as well the trip itself It is an amazing bonding experience for the for the students who go and staff like you're truly a family when you travel and it's almost being with your family. You're just you're with each other looking out for each other connecting with each other and there's you know you know there's no one really looking to do something. They're

084just there for all the right reasons. So it it's actually I would say it's easy but it's not that complicated and you're just making sure making sure. Another question. Sorry, you got another question. >> No, I just think >> so. How are the chaplons are selected? Are just teachers or is it parents and then is it a bullet from a hat kind of thing? >> So, um it is teachers that volunteer. Um and then once we extend past those volunteers, um we have asked some parents in the Disney trip. Um a lot of folks when we get a number of students um so we'd be looking for like certified teachers who might also be um a parent or or in this case for me um actually have the spouse of of Andrew Shack who whose

085husband is a certified teacher for the last 30 years accompanying as the fourth chap so we still might open it up to another person if you volunteer but that's where it stands right now. >> Okay. Thank you. Okay. Uh, any other questions? Okay. Uh, I have a motion on the floor that the camp board of education approve the September 2025 high school trip to Greece on the April 9th through the 17th, 2027, forgive me, 2027 2025. Uh all those in favor chair doesn't vote seven. >> Thank you. >> Okay. Um we're going to go to standing committee report to start with finance Russell. Um we met this pretty much the majority of the meetings but uh financial report we did have three members of the First time we've had >> much there wasn't much discussed

086today. >> Okay. Any questions for Mr. Bush? Okay. We'll go to policy. That's Mr. Sh. We met 5:00 tonight before the meeting had a number one top agenda this issue class size policy recommendations. Uh we studied some research. We looked at the neighboring districts dozen of them. We looked at the United States as a whole as a whole and uh I have put some tentative suggestions together. Uh the issue we're going to deal with before we bring it to you is do we want to make this a policy or a recommendation. It was a policy it was withdrawn and it becomes another policy of course we have to go for it and we would we would have to process through shipment beforehand we should have something next month then the following any questions for Mr.

087Sh. Thank you. Curriculum >> curriculum met September. We haven't met yet for October, but um >> does that mean tomorrow? >> It is October 29th, 9 a.m. like to join us. We have no public comment. Let's see. We look heard from the assistant superintendent about his monthly update. Uh we reviewed curricular legislative updates that include continuing curriculum transparency by 2027. We reviewed the educator evaluation and growth plan update which included minor revisions for this year. And then we did a deep dive into the fall districts, discussed areas we could approve and areas. >> What's on your agenda next? >> Not sure. Any questions for days questions? >> Okay, thank you for that report. >> So Kim, I'm correct. Right. >> Yes. >> Communication. I just want to check on that. Uh communications. >> Oh, yes.

088We had Yep. We had a meeting on October 6th. Um the district newsletter will be out mid November. I'm not sure exact date yet, but um I know the district's working on that. We talked a little bit about strategic plan around communications. And then um received some feedback that it was good to see school events have a start time and an end time because sometimes that's confusing to know like what time after school activities end for pickup. And then just having more consistent communication. We've had positive feedback on the timing, the layout from the different schools. I know each school has their own newsletter that they provide. So, the feedback's been positive on that. And then we've had a few um some input from our um board of ed on doing some collaboration around PTO,

089like having PTO presidents come in and and speak to what they have going on. I know we've done that in the past. So, that was some feedback we've received. And our next meeting is uh Monday, November 3rd at 1 pm. >> Okay. But accomplished there. Any questions on communications we have to be looking at? Okay. Thank you. I have no report on crack. Calendar of events are in your packet. The only thing I would re uh again remind you all this the uh the bridges meeting now which takes place at four o'clock and then we would move right into uh right uh the tribe board.
