so and looking over the the calendar for 2425 there's some discrepancy well there's not really some discrepancy but interpretation on the law that the Board of Education in the winter set the the graduation date which the Board of Education was allowed to do for Friday June 6 so and going over the the calendar again when we had graduation the other day a teacher actually uh noticed that the the graduation date is on the 179th day of school now kids are allowed to graduate with 179 days but the board of education is required to set the graduation date at 180 days so if you do the math we're set for 179 days tradition K is really like to do graduation on a Friday night and it was very nice this past Friday night so we have

a few choices and I didn't think one would be if we wanted to go Friday was to bring it to the following Friday the 13th or bring it on a Monday so I started um thinking about this a little bit this has actually happened to us before that we had a snow day in April real late in April probably 20 years ago and I actually brought the seniors in during April vacation and had over 90% return rate of the seniors coming in during a provocation to make sure that we have the 180th day and then have graduation on the day that they wanted it so I really thought about culture and climate and what we're trying to do here in the can public schools and really try to create an environment that it would really

set the tone for high school so I spoke to Mr the pipo and I said what if we take the the 28th which is a Wednesday and bring just the seniors into the high school on that day and that was senior day and really focus just with the seniors saying you're not only the leaders of our school but you're the leaders of our district and we're counting on you to lead the way and and make it a real special day for them on that day after the senior brother breakfast that day have um talks with the seniors on their senior projects that they need to do have a Kos speaker I would plan on speaking to the the seniors I asked Mr Daniels if he would speak to the seniors their class advisors would speak

to them and really set the tone for them on that day of really establishing the culture and climate for the schools for the school and the schools I I spoke to Mr dep pipo he really really like the idea I spoke to our Union president and the vice president one of them being a teacher at the high school they loved the idea I spoke to um a department share at the high school who really liked the idea and people actually thought that it' be transcending and setting the tradition I wish I actually could have thought about it six months ago I I actually think it's a really good thing bringing our seniors in a day earlier and set the the climate and culture for the high school so what we would do if the board

approves we you would vote on that change today it would just affect the senior class we would send notification out to the families in the next couple days letting them know that the senior day which seniors would start on August 28th and Mr dep pipo in the summer would send out a schedule with what that day would look like I don't anticipate that we're going to have problems with the seniors coming to school day 45 to 50% of our kids are playing a participating in athletics for the fall it it's one day early um so I don't anticipate that that would give us the 180th day and that would allow our students to still graduate on June 6 I'll take any questions questions for the superintendent online first was the other part of that that

June 6 wasn't a half day or that's it's a half day it is a half day but it would have been the 179th day F we need to have 180 okay yeah I make sure that it was labeled at the half day thank you Jordan when we spoke yesterday matter what were you referencing ago law different where you had to get in learning yeah so the the law states that the Board of Education when they set the calendar if they set a graduation day let let's say we're setting it now that the law states that it has to be 180 days now if we have three snow days that graduation day even if it's the 177th day the students still can graduate on that 177 day but you won't be bringing them in on a

spring break like did years no no that's that's what that's why the law changed because this were setting the day on April 1 and there could be snow on April 15 and all Vues and things were said so that's why they changed the law and added the flexibility I appreciate that Canton actually sets their graduation date a year out uh my previous District didn't set the graduation date till January and February it was pretty frustrating to families to try to prepare for a special day all right thanks Russ Erica yeah hi everyone this is Erica um I actually like the idea I think that would be a really nice way to start the year for the seniors and um set the tone have a little bonding moment for the senior class I think it's a

great idea that's the plan I I think it'll be a trend Setter I think you see other schools Do It um Jordan do you have a question no I don't Joe no I agree we talked about it before I it's a great idea what was planned for the 28th that you won't be able to do nothing so the the teachers are required to be here that day and we're we could do anything that we want for them that day um so nothing for the seniors were plan PD won't be affected we'll pull the class advisors out to talk to the kids we pulled the senior teachers out during periodic times to talk to the kids about their senior projects that day and I I to be fair Mr pip he really needs to sit down

and do a really detailed schedule I I'm excited uh about not just to bring our seniors in I apologize I wish I would have thought about it six seven months ago because I would have composed it then convocation 26 convocation will be the 26 and I'm looking since I most of the I know this is not but most of the board members are here say sometime the the first or second week to do our Retreat um I Heard it pretty clearly the other day that people want to spend some time with their families to do that and what's important for me is for you to go into the schools and we established the tradition of going into the schools anyways so we'll we'll get a a solidified a date that'll be comfortable for everybody that

it won't be the I think we were thinking the 27th it won't be the 27th let let you get your kids off to school um for those of you that have their grandchildren and that will work on a day the first or second week of August September sounds great any other questions hearing none can I have a motion please I move to approve the amended uh 2425 school calendar to reflect grade 12's first day of school to be on Wednesday August 28th for a senior day second thank youan a second okay any any further questions no okay all those in favor did you hear my yes yes okay great so I think we're do we have nine is that we n who we missing no oh no so 88 Z 8 Z perfect okay 80

for and second and it pass thank you Inn thanks for being on line we will start the finance meeting in about 3 four minutes and move we adjourn June 11th 2020 for a special meeting at 757 oh I second thank you favor I we're than
