001Juliana you Le in the pl please to the of the United States of America and to the for it stands one nation God indivisible and justice for all and uh for the record I called me to order at uh first item on the first item on the agenda is the chair's corner I'm the vice chair L Daniels is the chair he very much regrets not being here tonight he's in route on a plane right now he's going to zoom in but he can't do that so but he sends his regards to everyone who was here for sure uh but uh just some information I'd like to share with the board members and with here uh as you may know uh we have lost our newest board member Carlin Fox uh we followed the town Charter
002in replacing Ryan O'Donnell who was a Republican and was who resigned a few months back the town Charter says that when a vacancy occurs anyone from the same party or any unaffiliated voter May apply we posted the vacancy had a half dozen applicants all of whom were either Republicans or unaffiliated on April 1st and we appointed Carlin Fox for the job uh on April 1st the Republican Town chair Mr Tom lley filed a concern with the town that while the charter says what I just described state law indicates that when one party has a maximum majority in this case that would be six a vacancy in the minority must be filled by a member of the party not an unaffiliated member we received legal input from both the town attorney and our board attorney who
003did confirm this as a result M Fox's appointment was declared null and boy if a vacancy is unfilled after 45 days the board of selectman fills that opening it's been more than 45 days so that uh action goes to the board of Select I do need to say that we acted in good faith we acted in line with the town Charter we followed the rules uh exactly as spelled out in the charter turned out that the charter was was inaccurate in that regard uh Miss Fox was a valuable board member had great potential she exemplified the dedication and commitment that our town values a you will be missed and to board members if you have any questions I would ask you to save those and directly to uh to Mr Daniels thank you uh at
004this point Dr Gman we have an important uh announcement to make super so tonight I'll be recommending to the Board of Education the principal of Cherrybrook Primary School just some history on this search process and it's great to see so many people here this evening when I was hired as the superintendent of schools last January I was formed informed by the Board of Education chair in I believe June that one of the first things that I would have to do is hire the Cherry Brook primary School principal there's not a more important job for superintendent of schools than to recommend to the Board of Education a principal for a school district there's not a more important job in this school district than recommending the primary school principal ship for the purpose that is the first
005entrance for some of our Learners at the age of three in their start of the can Public Schools and specifically their schooling with them starting at preschool so I took that responsibility very seriously we immediately formed a committee last spring of 17 members I I asked uh Mr Bishop Mrs Corto and M McLean to lead that committee and that committee also did a survey that was sent out to staff in the community at large and we got a very good response right back and I was able to receive and read all of those survey responses and really got a good understanding of where Cherry Brook primary school was at that time I asked the committee through the chairs to bring me three candidates that they would support to be their next principal at Cherry Brook
006primary school this was last June and I proceeded with a small group of people to interview three candidates in June and really got to know our three candidates and any of those three candidates could have done the job but as I mentioned the most important thing at that time was me really understanding what Cherry Brook was at that time and where Cherry Brook could be and and the The best scenario that I came up with and that I communicated to the the public the staff and I had a meeting with them in July probably my first day on the job in July I called a staff meeting virtually and informed the the committee that I really needed to get into Cherry Brook's school and really understand where Cherry Brook was at as a school and
007the best way that I felt that I could really Analyze That was not to appoint a permanent principal at that time but was to appoint an interm principal at that time and Mr Amry was leading the school at that time as the interm principal and I heard many wonderful things about Mr Amry and he was one of the three finalists that came to me from the committee so Mr Amry went through a very rigorous process with a committee of 17 and then a very rigorous process with a small group and then a one-on-one interview with me in a in a very rigorous process and at the end I decided that I was going to name him the interm principal at Cherrybrook Primary School what that enabled me to do as I put in my letter
008to the community it really allowed me as the new superintendent of schools remove that I was here 4 years ago a lot of things change when you leave a district four years and a school changed in four years I wouldn't expect a district to be in the same place when I left and I certainly would not expect a school to be in the same place so I was committed to being very visible at Cherrybrook primary school and committed to be talking to many individuals openly and honestly and candidly about the search for the next principal at Cher Brook primary school I averaged at least once to twice a week going into Cher Brook primary school without them knowing that I was even in the building I would go in for five minutes and I would
009go talk to a a student I would go talk to a staff member how's it going and then I would leave I would show up for events at the school to see how the culture and climate went I met with parents I met with PTO Representatives I met with Union Representatives I met with non-certified representatives and their Union leadership and I even met with the the leadership overall of the teacher Union leadership not only within the school but within the the the district leadership I met with custodial uh staff and I also met with the the secretarial staff so I spent a lot of time at sherbrook primary school during my first six to seven months at in and back with the can Public Schools but the day that really hit me hard was the
010day that I walked into Cher Brook Primary School right before our holiday break in December that day has the potential to be a day that some people would say don't send your children to school that day because they may not be doing anything that is not true within the can public schools and that definitely was not true the day that I went to Cher Brook primary school that they had a winter singalong that day and the culture and climate that I saw at sherbrook primary school that day really led me to the decision which I'm going to be recommending tonight I saw smiling faces on children which number one is the most important thing in children having fun with what they're doing I saw number two the second most important thing to me is staff
011members enjoying where they were at that moment of time and really celebrating whether they were celebrating that they were going to be on a long break or celebrating with one another the happiness and the joy that is going on within that school what I can tell you is that Mr Amry has dedicated himself to bring the culture and climate at Cherrybrook school to a very very high level at that school right now and to me if you don't have a good school climate you're not going to learn you're not going to learn and staff are not going to be able to teach and that day the climate at that school was unbelievably high and I saw children smiling I saw a principal when a principal got up the day before vacation and just put his
012hand up in the in the air and asked boys and girls to settle down literally you can hear silence very difficult to do with three-year-olds all the way up to seven and 8year olds take away the staff very difficult to get a staff also to a align but then I saw staff align with Mr Amry when Mr Amry raised his hands I saw staff raise their hands and then I immediately we saw children just actively engaged in what was going on at that assembly that day that is just one example of the wonderful things that I've seen going on at Cher Brook School besides the hard academic work that has been going on I heard from one teacher that was so impressed that when Mr Amry and I showed it to the rest of the
013administrative team and and they kind of looked at them themselves and said well I guess we just had to raise our bar presented to the staff a 37 page slideshow presentation that had all data and student achievement for the past three or four years in there and how students have performed and they were the staff was like this was one of the first times that they've seen the the data analysis like this and I said to Mr hry when I found out about it when somebody sent it to me I said well who did this and when did they have time to do this and he says well I did this I said well when did you have time do this he didn't answer that question but what I can tell you is that this
014is a man that will put student needs before his own will put staff needs before his own he's charismatic he's dedicated he cares about children but he also cares about his staff so to the C Board of Education I feel that I've done my homework I'm I'm a very tough cell when it comes to a principal I know that it's one of the most important jobs that I have as a superintendent to fill a principal seat I've done it before and it gives me great pleasure this evening to recommend to you to be the next principal of Cher Brook Primary School Mr Abe Amry [Applause] thank you Dr Gman for that that terrific introduction with Mr Amry and for all of the uh important work you put in into making that decision at this time
015I would ask a board member to move move that the C Board of Education appoint Mr a Amry as the principal of terb primary school effective Tuesday April 17th 2024 Felicia and Kim second uh before we vote on the motion uh any on the board wish to say anything just like to congratulate Mr I think that um he Testament to him you look online tons of Staff here I think online supporting you and in the audience and I think that um all can be more your so congratulations to your family and chry school well I'll I'll comment on on behalf of the board uh that we are delighted to have this motion before us uh this evening uh we not to the degree Dr grman has but we've seen the good work uh that you've
016done we've heard about the good that done from the community uh that you you succeeded in a difficult job as an emergency filling principal sry Brook uh you've proven yourself as an instructional leader you've proven yourself as an excellent Communicator with staff and parents uh We've enjoed your weekly newsletters found them informative and entertaining at the same time uh we heard about the calls you made to every home uh of incoming kindergarteners over the summer we had the opportunity to hear directly from you we visited your school uh a month or so a couple months back the chance to tour of the school for a couple of hours had some time with the curriculum committee uh for a morning not too long ago uh that we have concluded as Dr Gman has beyond the doubt
017you're the right person for the job uh as principal of cherryb primary school and we congratulate you and and thank you uh I'll call the question uh all those in favor say I raise your hand oppos it's unanimous and congratulations thank [Applause] you I'm GNA try not to get emotional here as my staff knows um words can't describe um the appreciation and how humbled I am by this um opportunity um there's so many people I need to thank um obviously you know Mr shler Mr Daniels the Board of Education Dr Gman Mr Bishop my administrative colleagues um obviously my amazing staff cuz I tell them all the time it's we it's we're te we're a teammate it's a it's a village that that makes a village strong um and then obviously um my parents surprised
018me driving up from Pennsylvania this morning which was really nice and um my my wife my children who who've um kind of sacrificed for good things but have been ultimately flexible over the past year and um embraced me when I come home at different hours with big hugs and smiles um but to the board um to to Dr Gman Mr Bishop my fellow administrative colleagues the Cherry Brook staff especially the students um and the families that that know fill our building um if it wasn't for for The Smiling Faces of of the children of Cherrybrook and and the parents and and the dedicated staff I most likely wouldn't be in this position it's because of them I'm here and I thank them sincerely for for their support um because without them um we wouldn't be
019able to do it we wouldn't be in the spot that we're in right now and I'm really excited to take us to the next level at Cherrybrook there's great momentum there's the children come in smiling and laughing and staff are coming in smiling and laughing and I'm just excited for what the future holds holds for us so thank you to everybody and truly sincerely mean it and appreciate everybody's um kind words and support it means a lot so so a couple of things Mr am um two things I've just been informed that Mr Daniels is online and he is he can't say anything verbally um but he is watching uh online and supporting this also um I do want to let you know that we do have a few things here for you and um

021is to be able to see your child achieve something that you were that you always wanted your child to be able to do is to achieve so I'm so happy that you're here today to see this because I promise you a a as parents he will never forget that you were here to mark this most special moment of him being named the the prin Canon CH primary school and his own children won't forget that you were here to to see that so I thank you so much for being part of this [Applause] apprciate and then I do want to let everybody know the PTO is going to be doing I don't know if here um she may be online the PTO is going to be doing a big celebration to Mark the moment of Mr
022am being the principal I believe it's on April 29th um it's going to be after the school there'll be communication going out so we're hopefully all children parents Guardians and the staff could attend that event so I asked the PTO to coordinate that I thought it would be more appropriate to do it after the school and more appropriate to do it around the time that the children and the staff won't have so let's take some great pictures of this yeah oh yeah let's go right [Music] in we'll take one with the whole board and then you should take one separ just on come on come on come on come on [Music] way let's go with just the Amry family would be [Music] great and then we'll go Mr myself and then if we can let's

024April 23rd at the community center at 6 pm. on some earlier calendars listed as Monday uh that's the evening of Passover so it was moved to Tuesday Tuesday the 23rd 6:00 budget hearing very important budget referendum is Tuesday May 7th uh graduation is Friday June 7th 6 grade promotion is June 11th 8th grade promotion is the 12th the Memorial Day parade is May 27th board does participate in that uh the CIS walk through is Tuesday May 7th the cherb walkth through is Thursday May 30th those are now 8:30 to 10:30 correct uh something uh want to call your attention to a couple events that took place at Cherrybrook uh I'm sorry I didn't do this when all your staff was here my bad uh it's a toy drive uh an 100th Day celebration toy drive
025and food drive and and Mr Amry asked you to make a just a quick comment or two about those events sure so um for about good part of March and in the beginning of April um well Mrs leir came to me back in the end of February with an idea that her her children um came up with they've been working this year with um Mr Paul benty who runs the nonpr the nonprofit organization um fighting a good fight on hunger and homelessness and um through um Li Mrs leir's teacher leadership and her kids leadership her third grade leadership um third graders leadership we've talked about it at Cherry for third graders being those leaders of our school and making those small changes in a in a larger community and they really took to the idea
026of being a compassionate citizen as one of our attributes of our board vision and they've been working with Mr venty with the Coy Drive and then um on April 5th um led by the 18 or so children in Mrs Air's class with pretty much the whole school of Cherrybrook organized well over aund couple hundred 3 300 yeah 300 um non- perishable um bags with food um personal hygiene items um to give to Mr venting um to help support those families and and folks in need and um children were featured on um great kids from WFSB um liby Scher came out to our school and um spoke to some of the children about why they wanted to do this and um they just said you're part of the you're part of the group you want to
027say anything why why you and your friends and classmates wanted to do that um because we wanted to and that's pretty much it right there and just really building that that empathetic Citizen and that compassionate Citizen and know that there's people you know in our community that that need that help so um big congratulations to you know M her students and then the whole Cherry book staff for really coming together and and and really holding a successful great kids kids event thank you a and thank you you're here I gather Mrs Le here yes M yes thank you for that and and thank you to your whole staff those are lessons in exercises in kindness and in citizenship that are really invaluable so we just want to call everyone's attention attention to that and and

029working with our subcommittee to get our budget out there into the community and now it's h the board of education budget and as Mr Sher provided you the dates I also want to let the board in the community know that it's been a a tradition of mine as a superintendent of schools to meet with the senior class of any District that I've been in and meet with the seniors and small groups of about 15 to 20 so right before our break I started meeting with seniors and I asked them a series of questions it really gives me some good feedback from the the seniors about where we are in the Ken public schools with some of them being in our schools for 13 years and getting it from a a student perspective I was supposed
030to finish the those senior focus groups on the the unfortunate day of as I was driving to work thinking that we were going to have a 2hour delay actually having to cancel school because I was told that we couldn't get buses down our roads because of that surprise uh snowstorm so I'm about 50% through our our senior class and and it's very enlightening for me but I've also told them on the the beautiful day that we'll have on on graduation on a Friday I don't want the first time that they've had interaction with the superintendent with me being on a Podium talking at them I want to be able to talk with them so that's another reason that I'm meeting with the the each senior is really so they can know who I am and
031ask me questions and for me to understand their experience within the can Public Schools I also want to let the community and the board know that we have an exciting concert actually tomorrow night April 17th which is a districtwide coral concert at 7 p.m. 700 p.m. Friday April 19th I believe I'm a judge for this is Canton Got Talent I'm glad I'm a judge it's Monday so you thank you uh Monday April 22nd is an Earth Day event at Kenton High School where we'll be planting some trees by the new softball field Tuesday April 23rd is an early release for the campon schools April 23rd is a town budget hearing 6: p.m. and I was stunned when Mr Moore told me this that next week our eighth grade actually goes to Washington DC amazing I

042Connecticut youth wrestling state championships in New New Haven uh about 2 months ago and so uh I'd like to congratulate these four students on that accomplishment qualifying and competing at the state level so Seline so first Landon de Cruz Hugo [Applause] e Hugh Jacob [Applause] and S K not not present tonight so we congratulate them and before Landon leaves I need to highlight the coach let me know that Landon was also noted in his weight class uh finished fourth place in the entire State a huge accomplishment so congratulations gentlemen congratulations I take your seat for now we'll come back up for a picture hold on do same thing could I have Aiden Ethan Michael Riley and Aiden join me up here yes so we have a wonderful music program at can Middle School throughout our
043district and can middle school is in my opinion uh one of the the the jewels in the crown of the can music program and um specifically our Jazz program is unique amongst the state and it is a preeminent Jazz program in the state and I give a my congratulations to the our entire music department on a successful year of musical performances uh and accomplishments specifically the entire jazz band that these select students have something very unique to to highlight so Canton Middle School's jazz band performed at the Yukon jazz festival in February at this Festival the entire jazz band performed amidst High School colleg and other highlevel middle school jazz bands they performed in front of a full Auditorium where the entire jazz band was commended on an outstanding performance they then broke into uh
044workshops by instrument and they worked with a Yukon professor in their area of specialty and there our trumpet section received an extra special recognition from the professor that worked with them they were given an award for outstanding musicianship for their Excellence so we congratulate our jazz trumpet section on this unique honor well done members of members are Aiden glassie Michael [Applause] Landry Riley mson not in attendance congratulations Riley Ethan shayer and Eden vet we'll call you back for a picture great job can I have Archer he join me up here Archer is being recognized tonight with what we are dubbing the rising leader award Archer is a seventh grader C middle school and he's shown leadership through his involvement in commitment to multiple clubs in the building including student council we speak and GSA he's

046absolutely deserving of our Rising leader award congratulations Archer [Applause] I would now like to move to two of our highest Honors that we give at Camp middle school and to start can I have uh Yasmin alhad and M O'Donnell join me up [Applause] here uh yine and Loan are up here in recognition of our cave student leadership award this is something we give on annually um cab is the Connecticut Association of boards of education and they may put out an annual call for a school's finest and we go through multiple rounds of voting as a staff to uh think about which students are most deserving of this we have many students who could fit the criteria and but we are called to pick two eth graders who most the fit and deserve this recognition the
047cap student leadership award looks for students who demonstrate leaderships defined as a willingness to take on challenges a capability to make difficult decisions showing a concern for others and an ability to work with others a willingness to commit and see through difficult projects diplomacy the ability to understand issues clearly and the ability to honor their commitments of all the students in Kon Middle School I'm proud to give this award to these two students y me in Lin um so first fin and you get four folks I got to find your certificat I got to give you the right one not that one yet here they are okay for our first recipient of the cave student leadership award Yasmin alhad congratul and [Applause] all right and finally as I shuffle my papers could I have Landon

051for approval one for a revision of an authorized signer for the Ed 99 agreement and the other for a non-renewal of non-tenure teachers him and any discussion all those in favor anybody oppos thank you Dr so now we're going to ask Mr MO just give a brief update to his continuous Improvement plan there was many of you that were at the walkthr but there was a few board members that weren't able to attend the the walkth through so Mr Amry Mr Amry Mr Moore has a a packet for the board members that were not able to attend the the walkthr but he's also going to go through a high level view of what he spoke about during the walk through time so everybody would have an update Mr War all right thank you again for
052the opportunity to celebrate our students uh I appreciate everybody coming out and then the opportunity just to briefly highlight uh some of our accomplishments relative to the school goals um I appreciate the board members that have come out multiple times throughout the year to come and visit and see the great work happening at campon Middle School I've been proud to share with you um things that we have learned the things that we are working on and the growth progress and Improvement that's been happening as a result of the incredible efforts of our staff and students the bottom line as I summarize uh our progress towards our goals is that we've accomplished them the tasks that we set forward to our the action steps that we wanted to be held accountable to doing by Year's End
053uh we have done and we I'm able to say that recognizing that there's still two months of school ahead I looked at the goals that I presented to you in the fall and was very pleased to see that we had done in each of those things taking steps towards each of those things and I can briefly highlight some of those here for you in the area of student growth and achievement uh perhaps one of the biggest accomplishments so small bullet point but a very uh represents very large body of work we submitted our turnaround plan to the state department of education's turnaround office and our due to present to them uh which would be uh kind of a summary of the work that we did in our planning year as well as a commitment to
054work to make sure that c Middle School is doing as well as we can for every single student uh for the next 3 years so that we wrote that plan and submitted it to the state we revised our assessment our formative assessment calendar investing in really learning about the interim assessment blocks we uh have implemented that and are learning a great deal from them we revised how we did professional development to make sure that teachers had time to then do something with those assessments and brought in some Consultants to help them that process hiring a new math interventionist while I'll come back to under another goal and the implementation of a new tutoring program targeting students that uh that need the support to make sure they're achieving their their individual level of growth we've implemented
055professional development on pacing and alignment and tier one best practices in areas of social studies language arts special education and math in the area of Partnerships and Community engagement um the turnaround committee had Community representation both in terms of CommunityWide surveys and parent representation on the committee itself all teachers set goals uh related to community outreach and communication uh and we have a great partnership with the Kon Public Library that helps our library media center be a hub of community building obviously literacy but also executive functioning skills and overall wellbeing our partnership with the library really helps us accomplish that in the area of learning environment and belonging we administered and utiliz results of the desm we uh continue to build upon our our essential uh advisory program which is a longstanding tradition for us
056but we enhance them uh by getting back to the team building activities at winding trails and enhancing them through monthly Town Halls team come together and celebrate the things that are going well on a monthly basis and I bring the whole school together quarterly to both celebrate good things and set the path for moving forward student council is a great uh representation of the student of student voice to make sure that we're promoting a positive culture through special events the dances community service projects and things like fun F raising February to make sure that we're taking care of our financial sa sustainability and efficient operations we wrote next year's budget looking at the current projections in and then um planning accordingly we work in collaboration with the our our high school colleagues here at 76
057Simon AB to U make sure that we are doing Capital Improvement planning appropriately and our turnaround plan um which invests heavily in K Middle School there we are planning very carefully 3 years out to make sure that Staffing support and resources uh decisions are made and purchases are made with a three-year plan for adoption in mind flipping over uh in the area the area in the goal area of embracing Equity um we have Middle School teachers that are leaders on the district Equity team uh and I'm extremely proud of how we Embrace that work and lead I think the district in that work we implemented a new student leadership club called The Warrior Squad uh another leadership student voice and student leadership team focusing on community service and uh positive well-being within the building we
058look at data uh through the lens of equity making sure that every student is getting the instruction and support that they need and make sure that we collaborate with the new open Choice the aison to address and remediate barriers to success and finally in supporting our teachers in Workforce Development we hired our math interventionist and Coast uh coach Tony ji who is doing a wonderful job at both middle and high school level we made sure PD was was available on Desa informative assessment data use the math department is collaborating with the consultant to really uh build their expertise with the a few years ago now but the relatively newly adopted illustrative math curriculum our expertise and knowledge of that is as deep as it's ever been and as I mentioned before language arts teachers social
059studies teachers special education case managers and instructional coaches are collaborating with Consultants looking at our literacy instruction focusing on identifying best practices and aligning them in the curriculum Canton Middle School is committed to being the best school that it can be and I think that these steps uh I'm proud of what we've done this year to move in that direction of continuing to serve all students well but doing it even better moving forward so I'm happy to answer any questions about this work uh and I appreciate your support throughout the year that allowed us to get it all done thank you Jeff uh it was a very impressive and informative two plus hours we spent with you uh back on April 2nd uh board members who were able to 10 a quick thought you want
060to share based on you guys couldn't but quick thought you want to share or not it was a great visit and we appreciate all your transparency with the plan and your ability to quickly pivot and embrace it and Jump Right In and you know make changes that are necessary and delve into stuff deeper over the next 3 years so I appreciate your um you know walk Jordan the the tours have been great and the you know the activity we got active engagement of uh working in the math class was fabulous and um so thank you for for sharing with us that day I know it doesn't get reflected in the meetings what what you presented and stuff is you know but I think we appreciate um the format of that yeah it's always nice to
061go around and see what it's like in the classrooms and how much middle school has changed from when I was in Middle School and kids engaged on task in creative ways and just to see how the teaching process has changed and um great things going on in C middle school so thank you good and folks that didn't have a chance to go to attend do you have questions or comments or yes I yes thank you I was going to say I'm just I'm really excited when I look at these categories they're like really thorough and all encompassing all the right things to to me school by side we happy to see that um and I was just curious about the Consultants that the teachers are working with and who are the Consultants yeah so um
062Matt is working with a gentleman named John K and the other departments and our literacy focus is organization called Ed Advance uh I credit Mr Bishop with doing a lot of betting of potential resources and doing you thorough background checks in terms of where they've done work before um all all of the people that we're working with we know schools that have worked with them and sing their praises I can't think of a more professional way to say it but like love these folks and the our work with them is yielding fruit both of the short-term and long-term variety immediately implementing impacting practices of so how do I do this math lesson in a more effective way and then also asking questions about are we teaching the right things at the right time in the
063right order for the right amount of time really the work that's happening at K middle school right now is really detailed curriculum work I think is the bulk of it and so to have an outside perspective come in and say have you thought about a learning Target success criteria and progression through the standards here and U so that work is invaluable it has an immediate positive impact on students so those are the those are the two Consulting groups that ien thank you Russell good uh that you know me meting is productive when it goes 2 hours and it goes 20 minutes over and nobody was complaining uh it was informative and and worthwhile and and it helped us a lot understand what's going on uh that that you and your staff clearly have recognized what
064the issues are uh you've come up with a plan in instruction and curriculum to address the issues uh you're cooperating with the State Department of Education with their experts you just heard that uh there's the opportunity there for some funding from them that which would be okay with us if that occurred um and there's a chance for us uh not only to see uh some real growth and development in our own students and faculty but to become a model School uh for the entire State and we hope that's what will occur uh as we spoke with you and visited classrooms uh that we realized it was obvious that that a lot of good work is going on and we congratulate you for that and support you in that and uh uh you're to a good
065start on on making some significant changes and improvements so thank you very much thank you I appreciate the the partners at the state that you mentioned they've been wonderful Partners again I credit the work of the staff that they working real hard as none of is possible about them and and you supported well and I promise in return I'll keep the results of the math quiz and the math you did confidential thank you you know the missing chair tonight did take last place in that D but we don't want that in the record so but just quickly I I wasn't able to attend the Cher Brook walk through so Dr Gman arranged for me to meet with Mr Amry for an hour by myself which was really good so uh Mrs Muller and Mr Bush
066if you would like to meet with uh with Jeff uh just let Jordan know and he'll set that up thank you enjoy enjoy the DC train thank you for going I know you a young family but you're you're spearheading me so they didn't say they were sad to see me go so it has just a reminder to the board that May 7th at 8 at 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. is a CIS walk through so hopefully everybody will be able to attend and as Mr shiler says if that time does not work for you um we will set up a time for you to uh get a tour with Mr Corto at a separate meeting and it could be I know some of you work it could be before school at the after school we we'll
067work around um your schedule um but if you could attend that would be great and then may uh 30th is our Cher Brook primary school walk through also I didn't yes you did I you want say anything did you want to say anything I no I'm fine okay assistant superintendent report no March financials oh March financials I'm sorry super so the the board of Finance last night were reviewed our March financials and then this morning our Board of Education subcommittee reviewed our financials in its in your packet overall we are progressing really nicely we are forecasted end of the year budget is 31,8 27 794 which is unfavorable in the red by 81,7 3 but what is a positive is that the forecast of March indicates a favorable change of 37,44 over last month so
068we're moving in in the right direction as we explained this morning at our Board of at our subcommittee meeting and some of the major changes were that Mr Bishop was able to obtain a $115,000 grant for professional development so we are going to really analyze um that account so we're able to take away $115,000 out of that account to know that that would put us in the black and Mrs McLean has done a wonderful job bringing our special education costs um down and some kids are coming back that were more favorable to the tune of $222,000 and then on the Highlight memo it gives you a little bit more specifics one of the things that I want to do is introduce the the board and the community to our interm business manager Mrs Robbins who
069is here with us this evening I I feel fortunate enough to to uh have Mrs Robbins uh by our side as our inter business manager uh Mrs Robbins was here as the business manager for two years in the Ken Public Schools while I transitioned from the business from the bus from the principal of Ken Intermediate School to the assistant superintendent and then I had the privilege of working with Anna as my business manager for the gramby public schools and was the the business manager for the Grammy public schools for eight and a half years of a very solid solid foundation of Good Financial practices in grany and I I learned a lot from Anna being the the the business manager in gramby so when I had an opening uh for an interim business manager and
070Anna was available um I we reached out to see if Anna would fill that slot as the intern business manager and I'm excited for her to jump in and really look at our March and April financials and I expect uh some movement as I explained to the board of Finance last night in the subcommittee this morning of some movement of us really looking at some of our areas to see if we can bring that gap of $81,000 down into a possibility of black as we know the the board of Finance has a very difficult job of our fund balance is not at the level that we would hope it to be at and the last thing that we want to do is request to the board of Finance to to dip into that fund balance
071so I'm counting on Anna to really look at our financial aspect and the operations of our district to see if we could close that Gap so I want to welcome Anna Anna Robins back to the Ken public schools and excited to have her by my side again to work so Mr Bush I don't know if you have any comments no I think you covered everything I mean you I'll go through my financial committee report as a lower down yeah i' just like to we're delighted to have you back in so thank you so much for being [Applause] here assistant superintendent report Mr Bishop uh yes thank you Mr Shyer I wanted to share with the the board that uh our work on the teacher valuation and growth plan continues I'm looking forward to bringing that
072forward to the board uh curriculum sub commmittee uh next week for a first review of that work it's been a great um piece of work from our committee uh which is cons situated of folks from across um responsibilities of schools and I'm grateful for uh Mr CTO and Miss Marshall jensson for their work and co-chairing that work um I also wanted to be able to let the board now again with the state requirements for uh reading programs CH Brook primary school is continuing with the review of programs with help for literacy uh we are just at the end of completing our first review and moving through with the second of two uh the second two uh reviews that we have to be able to complete our three by the end of the year uh with
073a hope a hopeful goal of being able to bring a presentation uh for the beginning of next year and then um wanted to let everyone know to the the SAT occurred uh just at the end of this uh last March so congratulations to all of the junior class Juliana who completed that work and we have our Smarter Balance assessment uh uh assessment we which will be coming up in April um so April is a a strong testing month for us and in May I'm sorry and in may as well so a lot of work that's going on within our schools any questions from my office thank you John thank you we're running a little bit late so maybe we'll skip public just kid uh we move to public comment now uh any Community member is
074welcome to speak for up to 3 minutes we have should keep your comments in no longer than 3 minutes uh recognize that we can't engage in the discussion with you back and forth Peg's an old friend she knows she started on the board for eight years uh years nine years she understands the uh the rules there so uh is there anyone in the audience take the full five minutes since I'm the only one here no I do have notes hi everybody I'm Peg Barry I'm uh 115 Robin Drive and I am a member of the board of Finance but I'm here as a community citizen today um about a topic that is very important to me um I have presents uh Joe for you Jordan for you I'm going to talk a little bit about
075this book for a few minutes um and why it's important to me I heard this author interviewed on I have notes to try to keep it 3 minutes I'm going to try uh on a morning news program a few weeks ago I immediately ordered three copies of the book you'll see there's only two of them here I've already loaned one out to a friend whose son is dealing with some serious mental health issues um I've since seen this book referenced and the author interviewed in the New York Times the New Yorker a few podcasts I listen to and yes last week I got a free copy of People magazine in the mail and he's in there too so either he's got great publicity people or it's a timely topic I think maybe both um I'm
076here today to urge each of you to read it um I'll bring my third copy when my friend is done with it pass it around I read it in a few days it's fascinating um uh Jonathan hate the author is a social psychologists at um NY new Stern business school he works with graduate students uh he didn't set out to write this book he was looking into social media and was so profoundly impacted by some of the data he came acoss he published it in um on a Google doc anybody can access it he's done a metadata analysis of all of the surveys that are out there um and what he's talking about is the danger of the combination of smartphones and social media to our youth this is something I'm passionate about I have
077a niece and a nephew who've attempted suicide I have a nephew who died by Suicide this doesn't just impact me this impacts everybody in our society our children are suffering when I went to high school there was an East parking lot in Simsbury where students high school students could smoke they stopped that when they realized how dangerous smoking is um since I've been here for an hour or so tonight I've observed each one of the members of the board glancing at their phones they're Insidious here um and they're bad for our children I want to share a few facts 46% of teens say they are online almost constantly the average teenager receives 237 notifications every day if their phone is in their backpack but they're wearing an eyewatch they'll conveniently get a notification on their
078wrist it's highly distracting and they truly have a padog in reaction One in five of today's college undergraduates is suffering from clinical depression this is double where it was in time um there have been 13 there has been a 134% increase in girls suicide since 2010 if you add in self harm the number is exponentially higher educationally test scores began to drop across the board since the beginning of 2012 this drop became more precipitous due to covid uh but they did not begin with Co this may be correlational data versus positive but it's interesting nonetheless smartphones came out in 2010 Instagram came out in 2012 um the book makes the case for communities banding together and eliminating smartphones in schools uh they don't have to be collected or left at home uh I know that
079there's a lot of people who are concerned about the danger of God forbid a school shooting and being able to hear from their children if something like that would have happened what parents don't realize is it's far more likely that their child will be dealing with a mental health issue by the time of 14 if we allow them to have phones in schools as as young children um there's a lot more things in the book um but what he mo what he notes most is that most kids when asked as graduate students um they don't want to give up their phones but when the question is posed in the context of everyone doing it collectively as a group kids and parents are largely supportive um I'm I'd like to ask today that you consider what
080he has to say and then consider enacting policy that ensures the C in schools at least through the middle school be smartphone free this um there's ways to do this the simplest being the phone stay in the backpack all day that includes recess study halls lunch um they they would still be accessible to the children in event of an emergency it eliminates the need for for uh teachers to have to police um but it it it creates an environment of socialization versus social media um I think it's a time it's it is um is is the time has come for you to consider this when smartphones came out they were cool we didn't know the damage they could do um and social media isn't all bad it creates a community for some students who don't
081have it um but parents can police that at home um it doesn't belong in our schools my kids are grown I don't have skin in the game anymore um and I'm lucky that smartphones were only beginning to come out when my kids were in school but I'm here today because I think this book is a must read for every parent every educator and every Community leader you have an opportunity to improve the mental health and the lives of canton's kids maybe even Save a Life I think you should seize it thank you thank you P I have a lot of things i' like to say but I'm not allowed to but thank you very much thank you p uh and I'm going to go home now always nice to see you good to see you
082uh is everyone online we have two people online tonight if either of you joining us online would like to make a public comment you can go ahead and use that rais hand feature zoom and I'll call in you by your Zoom name no okay thank you here uh we don't have any new business no uh reports Russ Finance okay uh Jordan covered uh the part 2024 financials um we're looking forward to seeing uh us audits over the next month to see where we're ending up uh we also approved a refrigerator freezer at Jerry Brook primary school that comes out of Co Rel funds money that we had to spend the next 8 months and it was necessary to broke down recently um uh we did discuss a building and ground update that uh is starting
083in May Tom Richards since starting to do mulch getting ready for spring and uh we also discussed some of the projects the board of finances considering for five we'll get an update on R you want to explain why that money uh for the freezer why it had to be spent on that sort of thing I would love to explain that uh they the money had to be spent because it was Co relief money somebody can correct me wrong had to be spent on infr I want to say infrastructure upgrades of Capital Improvements couldn't be spent spent on food per se uh the refrigerator is on its last legs it gets broke down over president day I believe had to transfer a bunch of stuff over to the high school so it was a great opportunity
084that it chews up about half of the money that we have left to spend and um there's already a plan for the other half other more minor uh projects because of the size of this purchase brought into the yeah thank you questions for Russ uh policy uh the U uh review of the policies is behind us uh you'll be getting a an email from John hopefully shortly which outlines the policies that we are suggesting that we keep uh and the policies that we retire and the policies that we replace them with and they've all been vetted the committee has gone through every one of them had a bunch of questions SE uh embeded through uh other folks uh the school nurse the administration that sort of thing uh that many of you made comments along
085the way over various policies uh when you get the email from John it there's a policy that you want to take a look at and you read it and say whoa I didn't know this was here uh we need to have further discussion on that just let John and me know that uh and and we can always pull that policy out and uh hold it over keep the old one for the time being and and hold it over again uh but John's done a tremendous amount of work uh making this happen uh Peggy this is the first meeting she's missed uh she's been great Erica pinched hit a couple of times she's been great much appreciated and and uh I think we'll have a good finished product when we get done I don't expect you
086to reread all there's a lot of policies to reread them all when you get them but if there's something you want to check this would be a good time to do it uh we already have a first read on the on this from back in M John so we would hope to vote as a second read and adopt the uh you know what we're going to keep what we're going to retire and what we're going to change to at the main meeting questions if we gave you feedback or responded or question those things were oh yeah every everyone was discussed at a meeting uh John went through them allall John has become an encyclopedia on school policy at this point keeping him up at night or putting him to sleep one or the other but
087uh yes nothing was nothing was pushed aside is it just me who find some hard to locate on the website or is that just because the the the new ones I think will be easier to find the older ones are much harder to find because you put in a search and you could go nuts trying to find it yeah so that might help I think so yeah uh curriculum technology okay so at our March meeting um we got Mr Bishop's assistant superintendent monthly monthly update um we discussed the uh process of selecting a kindergarten through third grade reading program we discuss the kindergarten registration process and we are up to 20 waivers filed um then we did our text Qui review we only had one for AP Chemistry passed unanimously uh we heard from uh
088Mr depo and Mrs Jorgenson on that um got to look at the book and pass it around and everything um and I think there's one in central office if anybody's interested in looking at the textbook stop by and look at it there um and then we had Mr Del asro uh there to do a technology update um which was quite informative uh he presented the improvements that were aligned with the tech plan of 2020 through 2025 um we discussed the safety of the student data and strong practices of the district um additional staff has helped dramatically he said that he went from 300 Open tickets down to 20 Open tickets on any given day which is huge Improvement um new technology resources were discussed and he also shared that he would send a video showcasing
089the new technology to the board um if anybody's interested he did send that we sent that out oh it everybody got it okay um and then our next meeting is going to be on April 24th at 9:00 a.m. any questions the I a good question what were the tickets you were talking about with like like those are like yeah Open tickets so if somebody's having an issue with a laptop they they write up a ticket and and so they have so many Open tickets meaning things they have to problems they have to address and fix K you're probably familiar I would uh recommend to the curriculum and Technology committee and then to the the the policy committee for Mr Bishop to provide an update uh to that committee on how we utilize Since you're speaking
090about technology how we utilize our BYOD uh device that we have we have a a regulation on BYOD um and how it works within technology within our schools right now with kids own devices and give a background to the curriculum committee and then to the policy committee next month because it's both committees and I think that will hit a lot of members of the board and then um that we could provide a little bit of a brief update to the entire board just a summary of what the current uh policy is the reason that I bring that up is because you uh mentioned technology and I think it's relevant to uh what we heard so it's appropriate for the superintendent to uh just say that that's I I think that's a a good area whether
091you could do that John at your May meeting or even your your your June meeting one of the the the two should should happen I think it's timely and it's relevant to what you just spoke about Erica okay thank you ER I have to say I've been to several the curriculum meetings they've been really informative and and very worthwhile uh the AP km text is $187 and God bless the students that can get through that because it's it's over did you take it I didn't but I I won have to go through that right by me I know that so uh good luck and Communications ficia okay um we had our last meeting on the 25th of March uh The Joint Manor was sent out in collaboration with uh Board of Ed town and board
092of Finance if anybody didn't see it I happen here it was it came out really well so lots of thanks to K for all and hard work on this publication a lot of information and data in that one publication um assistant superintendent John Bishop met with Lori deito social School social worker Justine Ginsburg with pharmacist Valley Health Department and Dr Taylor who's a chief medical officer at the Village to highlight School supports and Community Resources in support of students and families in the arena of mental health and wellness and our district is developing a resource page associated with this information for the community so it be accessible um on um and our next meeting is April 29th at 1: p.m. thank you question and Mr Bishop will be with some of the members that Felicia
093was talking about will be providing an update on Mental Health uh resources and programs that we have in the Ken Public Schools as part of his assistant superintendent report next month so his report will be a little bit longer than it traditionally is I've asked him uh through the chair to do about a 15 to 20 minute presentation on Mental Health um within our district and I think it kind of aligns with a little bit of what you heard today uh from a a public comment so everything is kind of timely uh of what's happening so he'll be reporting on that and we'll have some of our support staff and some outside professionals that maybe are also correct with Mrs mle is absolutely correct thank you so that's at the May board meeting May board
094meeting for all board members too get that report that update heard several positive comments about the mail the budget mail okay I've heard several positive comments folks in town about the mail other questions yeah can you repeat the the time of that meeting on 4:29 um it's 1 p.m Google so there's a link um I think it was it may have been sent to it wasn't I'll make sure I'll let you know there's a list of thank you there's a list of uh April and May dates in your packet uh again I'll call attention to the town meeting the town budget hearing on the 23rd it be really important for as many of board members to be there as possible uh that that uh the board of Finance wants to wants to hear wants to
095listen uh and and show support from us would be would be very worthwhile um board member announcements anyone uh recommended actions uh a move that the camp board of V approve the consent agenda it consists of the minutes from the walkth through on March 7th the U regular meeting on the 12th the B Boe workship on the 26th of March and the special meeting on the special walkthrough meeting on April 2nd any care to make that motion Erica anyone second anyone Russ thank you uh discussion all in favor it's unanimous uh the uh you all received information on the uh he proposed high school trip to Barcelona uh I would accept the motion that the C board ofed approved the Canton High School trip to Madrid Barcelona in Rome April 10th to 18th 2025 Cindy
096Russell second discussion yes just a couple items out of my office this is a trip that to Barcelona Rome and Madrid I believe and I I did meet with the World Language team I did meet with Mr to pipo feel very comfortable with this trip looked at our travel advisories feel very comfortable we're still a year out from this trip please know even though that you are there's a recommendation to approve this trip I will be monitoring this uh trip and the insurance that is embedded within this is will be known to the the students and their their families and the most important aspect to me is student safety money will be secondary so um this has complete support the the teachers have done a nice job putting this to together and at this moment
097of time I don't have a concern with them traveling to this part of the world questions discussion do we know what the cost of the yeah it should be in there fairly significant 4,800 yep so they will be looking at as part of that they'll be looking at fundraising activities and they'll be talking to to to students about that but with any trip right now it it it's a lot of money other questions concerns uh I'll call the question then all those in favor of supporting this as I guess it's a first first this is for approval okay approving the trip favor say raise your hand or say I russle good okay that's unanimous I think yeah um look for a motion that the Kon Board of Ed revised the authorized signers for the Ed
098099 agreement for Child Nutrition programs and remove donakowski and adding Anna Robbins as an authorized signer I think this is the first Felicia and the second Russ discussion this this is just a formality of removing her former business manager into our inter business manager I have a copy of it here do we should I sign tonight questions discussion all those in favor please ra hand oppos no one it's unanimous thank you uh for a motion that the contract of employment for Aon herach Ashley Clark and Andrea Zera and Abigail MC mcmanamy mcy not be renewed for the following year upon its expiration of the 20 upon upon the expiration at the end of the 23 24 school year that the superintendent of schools is directed to advise such persons in writing of this action uh
099first Russ second Erica and explanation Jordan yeah so this is the non 10e Act and the the superintendent has to by May 1st recommend to Board of Education the non-renewal of non- tenar I did not give you every non 10year teacher that we have in the district uh right now there there are several reasons um that you could recommend there's six reasons actually that you could recommend a nonrenewal it could be anywhere from performance standpoint from budgetary standpoint from a loss of position a reduction of of force um oneyear contracts that that come into it long-term Subs come into it um so all those things so every single person that's on this list I actually met with today and they completely understand the the the position that the superintendent in the the the board is
100it I can't speak about each individual um with that questions uh all those in favor please raise your hand uh that's unanimous um and I think we're done but motion to adjourn at 8:41 Felicia Kim in favor everybody thank you all much
