the first order of business tonight is going to be to offer the oath of office we'll be doing that for the new board members the superintendent and then the president vice president of [Applause] is [Applause] states that i will support the constitution of the united states and the constitution is in new york the constitution of the state of new york and i will officially discharge that faithfully discharged in the office the duties of the office and reported education a member of board of education reporting on the best of my ability [Applause] [Music] [Applause] okay at this point we're gonna take not here nominations virtual they are on the screen right here okay [Music] okay so all in favor of brandon party one two three four and we have [Music] um states [Applause] the next order
of business okay all in favor and vice president one two three four and i have four votes vice president of vice president louis argentina vice president [Applause] vice president board of education okay um thank you harvey uh so we are now moving on to item e which is opening remarks from superintendent superintendent terry dade so i will pass the mic over to terry thank you brendan uh so uh it's great to uh be here just uh six weeks ahead of our next school year it's gonna go by fast so we're getting as much done in a relaxing yet expeditious manner over the next few weeks but in all seriousness we are still in the same spot that we've been the past two summers uh unfortunately i i do uh think that we'll be in a
much better spot this year but we still have to wait to see if there's any miraculous gift from the state dropping down on us with regards to any kind of protocols or restrictions that we might need to follow for covet mitigation for next school year again i am really really much more optimistic this summer than the past two only because when we heard from them for summer school the summer camps were running everything is continue doing what you did at the end of the school year so that's a good sign so far so once we hear anything we'll update the board in the community until then no news is good news i'm hoping that i'll send a letter out in august that just says we're going to move forward with uh the way we operated
last year if not with a little bit less any kind of restriction so that's all i have at this time i hope everyone's enjoying their summer break thus far and looking forward to joining the cornwall family again for the 22-23 school year thank you thank you terry so we will now move on to item f which is recognition of visitors the board of education welcomes comment from the public each person wishing to speak is asked to speak into the microphone identify themselves and respectfully limit their comments to three minutes we'll have two opportunities to speak one now which this whole period will be limited to 30 minutes total and then one at the end of the meeting each speaker may address the board only once at both the opening and closing portions and please remember
that there will be no cross dialogue between speakers and members of the board all speakers are to conduct themselves in a civil manner obscene language libelous statements threats of violence statements advocating racial religious and other forms of prejudice will not be tolerated and the board will also not permit discussion involving individual district personnel or students persons wishing to discuss matters involving individual district personnel or students should present their comments or concerns to the superintendent during regular business hours for anyone wishing to speak please step forward to the mic and state your name thank you good evening everyone my name is alicia mekins i'm here to speak tonight share some concerns as a parent my child attends cornwall middle school okay to the parents in this room we all love our children right my heart sinks
daily for my child who attends cornwall middle school because when i ask how is your day she comes in angry upset and emotional with stories about how kids in our class mock children of color these actions happen directly in front of students and staff disciplinary actions are either ineffective or downright non-existent to be clear i say non-existent disciplinary actions because the children are clearly present in class the next day and they're not suspended they are further irritated with my child for speaking up thus exasperating the situation suspensions allow for cooling off and reflection as well this has been an ongoing issue where i've spoken to the teachers principal and assistant principal i've escalated this issue to the superintendent senator scofus cornwall mayor and governor hocle because this is a broader issue if this isn't addressed
by the board i won't stop until it is diversity equity and inclusion should be regularly addressed via workshops and sessions in school as we know with instruction repetition is key and for our children this message would need to be delivered several times before sing sin becomes habit children should be disciplined on the spot by instructors and not rush back to their seats our children go to school to learn and develop healthy relationships not to be ridiculed because of their race we live in a highly sensitive climate and children are learning these behaviors from home i urge you to take action our children here is just a snippet of my child's entire existence at cornwall schools just a snippet a video on june 27th was presented on the topic of juneteenth a classmate said to my
child i don't know why this holiday is a big deal when you as in my child were slaves we fed you and gave you a place to live that's good enough when a slave was shown on tv my child was mocked and told hey that looks like you this is just one day in the life of my colored child at cornwall schools i could go on and on my child has been pushed and shoved by a child whose parents wore make america great again t-shirts to field day this child also mocked her by saying the beads in her braided hair were too loud daily for three weeks she wore the hairstyle during gym class at that every week this school year my child has come home with horror stories on these occasions the teachers did
not discipline or bother to even call me or call the parents and that's after a physical altercation after the physical altercation and the racial comments these students were not suspended and were able to make fun of my child the next day call her a snitch for being upset that her peers refer to her as a slave our children are not safe a black girl with the newly straightened hairstyle had water poured over her head on the bus because her hair looked different our children are not safe a girl who identifies as gay had her pants pulled down by a group of boys my child had to witness this our children are not safe my child is outnumbered and told it's not a big deal other children struggle to speak up for themselves and they remain
silent victims the resolution offered to me was that my child would be separated from these individuals next year my child's in honors classes and some of these kids are as well so how many honors classes are there will my child receive the short end of the stick why is my child being secluded why is that the solution these questions come to mind she did nothing wrong again i repeat our children are not safe this issue starts at home and our kids are left to deal with this trauma with all the issues going on in the schools i'm realizing as a black mother that my child is never safe i am powerless as a parent i urge you to find it in your hearts to hear my cries not just as a woman of color but
as a parent you must hold students and staff accountable to the fullest extent to show that these behaviors will not be tolerated at cornwall school schools make a safe space for our children so that they can comfortably tell you what's going on and remember that this is not a quick fix but a continuous set of actions you must incorporate in our children's day-to-day schooling for them to feel safe and for them to be set up for success thank you there's nobody else who would like to speak during public comments we will continue the meeting to our recommended actions item g which is the appointment of officers so we will take these items one at a time the way that we'll do it i think this is both for new board members and existing we will
um introduce each item move it second it and then open for discussion so if anybody has questions on it just wait till it's seconded and then we'll take it from there okay so the first item is the um g1 appointment of officers so can i get a motion second second and discussion nope all right all in favor aye aye aye opposed and abstentions motion carried okay so option uh option geez uh number two other recommended appointments can i get a motion second okay and discussion uh so um i was looking through this list and actually was talking to harvey and i harvey if you if you could kind of talk to where could you we need to be mike oh mike i'm sorry harvey could you please uh bring us to where we need to
be on this certainly thank you uh john had brought it to our attention that for some reason the internal auditors for the district were not listed here as they should be so those auditors are nugent household pc and they would serve from july 1st to june 30th 2023. so the first item of action here is we would need a motion to add them to the list i'd move that just in please second second okay all in favor all right all right all right okay motion passes this is now inc nugent hauser is now part of this list to be carried on so we'll still have to correct yeah okay do i need to move it again now that it's a new yes the entire list yes okay so uh i'll go back back to pedal
so other recommended appointments uh do i have motion to move second second discussion okay all those in favor aye aye opposed and abstentions motion carried okay number three designations for the 2022-23 school year do i have a motion second and discussion okay all those in favor aye aye opposed abstentions motion carried number four authorizations for the 2022-23 school year uh do i have a motion movement second second discussion all those in favor aye aye opposed abstentions motion carried and finally other appointments do i have a motion second discussion all those in favor aye opposed abstentions motion carried okay that brings us to the consent agenda the use of the consent agenda permits the board of education to make more effective use of its time by adopting a single motion to cover those relatively routine matters
which are included any member of the board who wishes to discuss a particular piece of business on the consent agenda may so indicate and that item will be considered and voted on separately does any board member want to remove an item or items from the consent agenda teresa 10. anybody else okay so it is recommended that the board of education approve the following consent agenda items as submitted by the superintendent of schools so we will take items uh 2 through 9 and 11 through 30. do i have a motion so moved past i'm sorry i may not be following the numbers correctly but i did have some comments unfortunately my computer didn't turn on which number that's the thing i mean i do not remember you want to take a quick look through the paper
doc if you give me just the one that we did before includes the appointment of the delegate and the alternate delegates counties as well as the so we always kind of forget to do that so maybe we can go back and people can think if they would like to be the delegate or the alternate to the orange county school board ah that's number five a b inside okay five a b and c all right well this seems like an opportune moment to do that we'll uh okay so we'll uh apologies we'll go back so this is still five under the uh appointments so each year we have a delegate and an alternate delegate to the board of ed i'm sorry orange county school board association also to the annual uh nisba meeting in october and
then the legislative liaison for those who aren't familiar you would be involved in you know any local um i say advocacy groups sometimes nisba meets and you know goes to a senator or or uh council person's office and then the biggest responsibility with legislative liaison is in january the capital conference in albany one of us usually treks up there i've done it in the past i mean it's you know expenses paid if that matters but uh that's the that's the rub there so we'll start with delegate and alternate delegate first to uh orange county school board association any takers oh don't take it for a delegate okay sorry is this on the agenda or we're adding this too no so this was this is within other appointments so yeah if you go into 5 a
b and c got it thank you yeah so we have uh larry and margaret for the delegate and assistant delegate orange county school board association so same drill uh delegate and alternate delegate to the annual meeting of nisba in october 2022 all expenses paid it's written on there i have to legally read that anybody i i can't hype it more than i have delegates no no i'm in the army i'm taking a step back okay you don't have to tell us if you don't want to do it only if you do you made it your body language indicated you were down for it okay that did it brenda i'm fine i'm you know like michael peters is not going to help me tonight with uh for the others consented to that item yeah got it
okay you can't move on okay we uh so i um look i'll since this one is a obviously a hot potato i will uh jump on this grenade for the delegate to the annual meeting i'll take the stake if anyone's listening i'll take open it it'll take alternate security jim just became the delegate that was quick uh all right so that is uh 5b so now we move on to the legislative liaison who wants to tackle that one can be two you know if uh we could do an alternate for that we've done that in the past of you know you something comes up and you can't go to the capitol conference in albany i'd do it john okay i could be the second one you'll be the only one very good okay so we
will uh okay all those in favor aye aye aye opposed abstentions motion carried okay we are back to the consent agenda uh we'll just start this fresh and theresa you tell me again just so we're clear um so i won't read everything but it is recommended that the uh well does any board member want to pull an item at this time item 10 10. okay so it is recommended that the board of education approve the following consent agenda as submitted by the superintendent of schools that's items 2 through 9 and 11 through 30. so do i have a motion discussion yeah you want to pull item 13. okay all right so we will i'll i'll retract it is recommended that the board of education approve the following consent agenda as submitted by the superintendent of
schools so now that is uh 2 through 9 14 through 30. all those in favor aye aye opposed abstentions motion carried okay so uh item 10 teresa um that was the report i had just sent an email i copied the board and i copied harvey just because uh new jerhauser passler's internal audit oh thank you there you go i asked harvey to just give a little bit more detail on the internal audit just to discuss the couple of deficiencies and you know what they mean where we stand so i just wanted to give a high level and then give harvey and john an opportunity to provide a little more detail because this was following the audit committee meeting with nugent and housler in that meeting audit committee asked a lot of great questions just to
kind of dive into the details of the report for the community and the board it was it was really great report they didn't find anything unusual or anything that should really be of concern for the audit committee but like teresa's pointing out the committee had the same concern with but if everything's so great why are there high risk items identified and just from my perspective just to give kind of a high level they said there's certain things that are just inherently high risk when you're running a school system or other businesses like a lot of cash going in and out those those daily transactions with clubs and things that nature that's from their opinion in my past experience being principal in superintendent another district those are just always going to rise to level of high
risk because of the sheer nature and volume of the transaction so those were the items identified were more than inherent risk but i'll turn it over to harvey or or john to add a little more flavor if needed i actually totally i kind of had an idea about that because i know about clubs but when if anyone is reading minutes from the public and they see something that says high risk i just want to make sure it's in our record that we're explaining exactly what that is so so terry's summary of how we got here tonight with these reports is is i think 100 dead on um at the last board meeting of the year i believe we talked about this briefly and and i used an adjective for the high-risk areas and i and
i either used gross high risk or inherent as risks that exist because they just exist and they don't according to nugent housler take into account the level of internal controls that harvey and his staff apply to the various processes when it comes to the to the financial aspect of the district's operation in that report i do believe that they mentioned that harvey and his team has gone to make automation a standard now which actually reduces the residual risk that's the risk after one applies all the various controls to it and so the committee the audit committee of which i think three of us are here tonight i think nina's the only one that is not if i get it wrong please correct me and harvey youtube please feel free to correct me is that we
we felt very comfortable with the with the level of internal control at the district level the only other thing i'll add is the the high risk the low risk et cetera these are not unique these categorizations are not unique to us it's you know for instance payroll is a high risk it's a high risk for every single school district in the state so it's just as john said and terry said it's it's an inherent part of each topical area that we operate thank you i just wanted the clarification in case i saw that and i know it but i go thank you all right all those in favor all right opposed um let's hold on yeah but we do that individually yeah each one we're doing individually right yeah okay it's already it's been then
put to discussion yeah uh abstentions motion carried uh item 13 which is the uh which is the second reading of the policies that's right so can i get a motion second second and pass okay thank you very much and i do apologize for this mix-up my computer died on me and uh i'm took me a while to find the items so yeah i did uh uh look at every single one of those policies and what i'd like to discuss a little bit more today basically having the opportunity to to to have the discussion uh is uh specifically on the attachments if you can go to the file attachments numbers so 1420 complaints against curricula for instructional materials we're talking about first readings here this is item one item two file attachment four five one one
textbook selection and adoption first reading and item three is four five one three are library material selections and i'm going to go out of memory right now here's my recollection of my readings first of all i'd like to thank superintendent dave who did those kind of changes and mr date you made it very easy for us to see what was there before and what what you're proposing as highlighted in yellow i found out that to be very useful and thank you for the time to to do those amendments uh propose the amendments now my my point here is that i've sensed my genesis was the role as i was looking at where does the board of education come in in the process of doing reviews like for instance like the complaints that we may receive
from the public about a certain item in the curricula and the structural material and it repeated again and again uh twice textbook selection and adoption and uh library material i found that we come in at the very very end of the process like you know the first thing let's say a student parent complains about this certain textbook for a certain video in the library or whatever that is or part of the curriculum maybe that lecture in arithmetic is too easy or too hard whatever that is so i think the process uh that if i recall it right the the teacher tries to resolve it with a parent if they reach no resolution they move a step up to the principal if they don't reach an agreement they move a step up to the to the
superintendent at that point in time the superintendent forms a committee inviting definitely the complaint the complainants to be part of that committee they invite subject matter experts in the topic and they invite teachers and they you know they form the committee and the committee would try to resolve come up with a recommendation that accommodation goes to the board of education for approval up or down this is what i felt like our role as a board is very late in the process i'd like to reverse the order a little bit and make us a little bit more involved from the beginning of the process that's my general sense of how things can be resolved it's a great observation i just kind of want to point out that that's kind of our protocol from soup to nuts
if there's a parent concern in the classroom or things of that nature we really do go teachers the most knowledgeable of what might be going on in the classroom then involve the principal if that status if the parent's not satisfied then superintendent then board so that's kind of the protocol for everything um and we were aligning this policy with the way we've operated with all kind of other policies but that's just from the admin side um the explanation but definitely open for board discussion thanks i i may add just maybe maybe more like clarification what worries me is forming the committee i mean to resolve that item let's say there's an offending of a textbook that some groups find offending i mean you know and then we're going to reach can hypothetically i'm going it
went all the way up to forming that committee forming the committee i'd like the board to be involved in forming that committee because because what if the committee is biased just to be you know very very transparent about it somebody might tell you the committee is biased but we do it then so if we bring it to the table of the board we make sure that the committee is not biased everybody is represented in that committee how bass in the same respect how do you know then the board isn't biased because because because we got elected no no i could name you a few people that have gotten elected that are pretty biased and that's just on one hand um no what i'm referring to is the reason for this is because the board of
education and its its very nature i'm not just talking about in this specifically is is never to micromanage the lower level of a school district i'm not saying if if a person a parent doesn't come to us with a direct complaint that we would get involved but we would get involved from the the building up because otherwise there'd be no there there'd be absolutely no order at all um as far as bias if if a person has a complaint if let's say i brought a complaint about a certain book or or a subject and it went up to a committee now obviously if the committee is formed and someone has a concern about who's sitting on that committee they still have the right then to go to the board there's there's always that opportunity to
come to the board but to to come to us directly undermines our own staff and administration yeah my opinion thank you no i appreciate i appreciate the comment i mean i don't know it's like it's hard to oh to 100 kind of you know it's like crystal clear with the best language with the best use of force and everything i'm not suggesting that we interfere from the very beginning when it's still at the stage of the student complaining about the teacher or or complain to his parent her parent about certain textbooks i'm not talking about that i'm talking about when the superintendent puts the committee together i believe you know maybe kind of you know that the committee the names would be brought up in front of the board of education and the modification says
thumbs up go ahead then we'll do the review that under the leadership of the superintendent sylvester at least we have a sense of who that committee is that's what i'm asking i i would suggest that under number nine here the final stage the board has some pretty general sweeping powers when it comes to the final decision and i mean just to be to read it off the the document the board of education in reviewing the statement of concern the request for considerate reconsideration of materials and the checklist for reconsideration of materials may confer with the librarians the administration involved and the complainant in order to reach their final decision this decision is final and the matter is closed so i think the what important to remember is that the board that no decision will be
made without the board's approval and the board in that instance would confer with all of the the parties involved right so if there was a determination that somebody was biased you wouldn't have to necessarily change the person right you could change the decision conceivably right it's not as if the board is cut out of the process i'm just trying to find the most realistic and sustainable role for the board in this you know i think that if the board could choose the the committee members right but that's still not going to change what they come up with i mean i think the ultimate power even in that situation is still at stage nine the last stage when the board either accepts the recommendation or you know makes a final decision that differs from it so
i i to theresa's point i think we want to be want to avoid a situation where we set up an unsustainable cadence right where the board is constantly interviewing committee members and evaluating them and i i it's just hard to imagine how often we would have to do that in order to keep up with every one of these incidents you're absolutely right uh but you i think you just mentioned the keyword how often not very often that's the bottom line i'm not trying to micromanage you know there's i understand that kind of i mean you know we set the policies i mean that's my understanding of what the board of education is we don't micromanage right we don't run the school system but we oversee the whole thing and what you just said is absolutely
right it's not very often that somebody's going to complain about the textbook maybe once any any you know in a year or two years or five years i i don't know i don't have data on that but in a case like that though larry oh i'm sorry larry i didn't see you down um i think it goes beyond just this particular policy uh in this policy we have the ultimate decision we can interview we can talk with the people that made the decision further down the line so if in fact there was a bias and and just as an aside just because we were elected doesn't mean we don't have a bias that we can if we realize somewhere down the line that there was a bias we can rule with that in mind i
see this as you can call it the slippery slope this isn't our job to appoint committees to do this this is we hire a superintendent of schools to run the school district in that process he is appointing the committee assuming it even gets that far the committee then makes a recommendation it then comes to us if we don't like that recommendation or if we think that there's something wrong with it we then go back and interview the people that either they interviewed or interview them and then come up with a decision i don't believe we belong in the business of appointing those types of committees because there are a myriad of committees that go on in in the school district i mean that curriculum the review committee uh you know there's a there's just so
many committees that occur in a school district where do we draw the line where do we say we have input into those committees or not that's why we have our chief operating officer he runs a school district under our guidelines our policies and with this policy in place it pretty well outlines what the steps would be and it still is up to us to make the final decision we get the printout we have the checklist we can get the book we can make our our decision from that point on so i i just i don't see i don't see a need for us to get involved in appointing that committee larry i agree with your sentiment as this may create a dangerous precedent moving forward with taking the board out of its role and inserting
it um kind of where it doesn't belong frankly um i would note too that this is the second reading of these policies if if this is something that we'll need further uh deliberation on i would recommend to go back down to the we take a remove from the agenda have it go back down to the policy committee which bass you are the option to be part of and let them review it at that level and propose suggestions i would be fine with that and bass i know you're coming in at the just to give you a little clarity on how policies are reviewed it goes it comes out of the policy committee they'll do a first reading of it make changes send it to the board for review any changes that the board has at
the meeting goes back for a second review so just because of the timing of you being sworn in obviously you're coming in right at the end of this it's already gone through that review process um but to that point to jump in that's this series of policies yeah right so it's a rolling the policy has rolling review policies and throughout the school year there will be the policy committee will me not to jump on you right now yeah that's good but there will be the the policy committee will meet review several policies um propose a first then a second reading for its it's it's adoption and just uh i'll go after richard yeah i just have a question about is this like the template for any situation that the uh the district faces like you
know teacher principal superintendent committee and then it goes to the board no um and you actually teed it up perfectly okay um so the uh public uh unless you're logged in to uh board docs um you can't see just based on our conversation that this whole topic of conversation is in yellow and that's a testament to megan argenio our assistant superintendent for instruction she actually noticed that she didn't we didn't collectively when we reviewed this we didn't want it to just be the superintendent making the determination so if you look at number five dissatisfaction with the decision of the building principle will be expressed by filling out the request for reconsideration of materials form and submitting it to the superintendent of schools without what megan added it would then jump to number seven the superintendent
will review the case and make a determination megan added a whole section based on collaboration with her colleagues across orange county they have a nice collaborative where they meet every month to discuss these types of things so she added this whole portion in yellow so it wasn't a one-person show it was how do we bring in the administration a parent who's not bringing up the concern but another parent in the school a librarian who receives professional development to kind of make these determinations on an age appropriate and things that nation so i wanted to make sure we pointed that out that this was actually an added layer from what the board has operated for decades we we added this to add another layer of uh scrutiny to um see whether this should elevate to the
board level and to lewis's point so we just got a whole you know background on kind of how the sausage is made we wouldn't we wouldn't be rewriting the policy right now right like what it would what would happen is we would remove it from the agenda kick it back to the policy committee for inclusion in the next round of policies that that committee will uh will deliberate and then you can anybody can join the policy committee and we're going to talk about committees in a second and that would be the the laboratory to make any changes in boarding thank you so i guess we're everybody's okay with removing this from the well wait no i'm not okay um it's gone through a first reading it's gone through the policy committee it's gone through a
first reading it's come to us now for the second reading and a vote i would rather have a vote on it as opposed to pulling it off the agenda i mean i'm fine with we we i guess do an informal uh well no you're right i mean this is this is the this is the pot this is the this is how it's uh this is how it's followed if i mean as a recommendation to anybody who has interest in policies joining the policy committee is going to be your best bet moving forward he's always come up in a cycle um teresa yeah um just to let you know last year i was the chairperson of the policy committee and um just to let you also know i hate being chair people of anything but i
was um we have i want to sound professional a gazillion policies right that we go through everything and we have to continually update them sometimes it's a simple change in a word and sometimes it's and many of the policies by the way have they we have nothing to do with them they come down from state ed we can't change a thing it's a matter of they want to update something and we're not allowed to touch it and i would say a majority of the policies are those in a case like this at first blush i can understand i i do understand what where you're coming from but i can also say that it's not a matter of just like brendan had said there's only a few of these every year the problem is the premise
that we work from as a school district disciplinary hearings with with committees and we would literally be we would be getting into so much of the nuts and bolts of the district that first of all the nuts and bolts of the district that first of all we don't work full-time for the district and you know i got a job we all do but second of all we would be creating a situation which would be impossible for us to do i have as i said we've gone through as larry said a first reading this is a second um i have no problem with this policy and um i know we didn't last time it's up to the board to decide how they want to handle it but i don't i i think if we have to
change this type of a policy we better go back and change a whole lot of other policies yeah thank you i i absolutely i appreciate uh i mean your uh your input uh specifically that you certainly let you chair that committee but you can take a look i mean the the [Music] the policies we're talking about here if i do the math right one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven i i i didn't challenge every one of the eleven policies i challenged three what's so common between those three what's the common denominator yeah academic right so and i see that's kind of the bolts are nuts i'm not going to count balls or nuts here in every single business of the school district that's not my job neither should i be
doing that but when it comes to academia i promised my constituents right and let me repeat one more time i got elected you got elected to brendan richard got elected right when we're asked to put like the bio together i mean you know it took me a whole weekend to put the bio together okay and i you can go back it's on record you can go back and read it my what i want to do is make sure [Music] we're delivering top-notch academics okay so maybe some other people would be focusing on some other aspects but i want to focus on academics when it comes to complaints about curriculum i can't sit on the sidelines and wait till the very end when i'm hearing a recommendation and i'm going to debate the recommendation i'm saying
i'd like us as a board to be involved a little bit more rather than being hands off follow the hands-off approach all i'm saying to kind of with all due respect to the superintendent please bring the names of the committee you'd like to form together if you receive such a complaint in front of the board and we look at the members of that committee we approve of or we do disapprove of so best i think the at this point um because this is not a policy committee meeting you know like we are not at the point we are rewriting language i think to larry's point uh i mean we we all can vote whatever way we want at this point to teresa's point these policies are constantly being reconsidered right it is a constant rolling
cycle of review so even if we approve this policy right now that's not the final no policy is final all if you check the dates at the bottom of these they're constantly they're in a review cycle that uh it just is ongoing so we can continue we can continue to review this as before it's when it's up next i i would implore you to take a look at the policy committee that's going to be where you'll have the most impact but if we don't approve this now we have no policy on this and just to to your goal it would revert back to the pre-existing policy which didn't even have this step in it right so it actually we could we could take it out and kind of kick the can on it but then
our policy is has even less oversight than what this suggests my suggestion would be we put this up for a vote now right you can vote obviously everybody votes however they feel comfortable with and then we can as the policy committee can take another look at this i'm not going to dictate what their schedule is but consider this for further review uh at a future date all right so any other discussion all those in favor aye aye opposed abstentions motion carried that brings us to this new business discussion of boe committees so we're not going to make any decisions tonight this is just a discussion i think the uh just to outline what the uh the process will be i mean everybody sees what the uh description of the committees are so i'm not gonna
go through and read all of them our goal will be to have uh the the committees fully staffed i suppose by our next meeting in august i think tonight is just to talk it out see if anybody has any questions about individual committees maybe gauge some informal interest we have for the new board members we do have some guidelines around committee membership we can't have more than four board members on a particular committee because then that would create a quorum with so therefore each meeting of the committee would actually be a meeting of the board as a whole so because of that we have to limit it to four and you might you know because interest may be too high in one committee uh you might not get on all the committees that you want
so i'm going to ask that everybody in the next few weeks email me your top three choices and if you can order them in preference number one being the committee i definitely want to be on number three is sort of my alternate that would be great and also any committees that you have an interest in chairing the more people who can volunteer to chair the better and hopefully by next next meeting in august we'll have that all figured out but i want to open the floor for discussion on committees anybody has a question about a particular committee that we can talk about just have a question who decides who's on which committee and you know who chairs it is there a certain like president vice president decides or it's just yeah i mean it would
so let's um in the easiest scenario is there are no conflicts and so everybody just puts their name in a hat and that's the committees those are the committees you get on in the event that there are conflicts i mean you know there are five people that want to be on a particular committee um if the person who if within your ranking you know if that was your number one and somebody else is number two you would be you would be given you know uh some consideration but none of this would happen without the um the involvement of those you know another round another follow-up say hey we've got more than one does anybody want to reconsider i mean there's there's always going to be collaboration there okay just just as an fyi by policy
the president appoints the um chairs i appreciate that i would ask that they recommend themselves you can you can certainly take the recommendation of somebody who volunteers that's and i think that's always preferable yeah so brandon one of the committees that i saw listed here i thought had been settled and so maybe it's just a matter of what we mean when we say maintain the the boe scholarship committee i think lewis did a great job taking that forward creating it i think we funded it and i'm sure someone's going to ask for some more funding sometime this year for it but uh get your checkbooks ready guys and gals but uh i i i see it listed there and i thought that had already passed so is there any insight on what we're doing there
to maintain john i suspect it's probably a rollover and that we established it last year it's probably a committee that we said we wanted to put we said and we agreed on putting together therefore it exists so it probably landed on the committee list and has not been removed um yeah i i guess if this board agrees to move forward with the scholarship you know to continue to fund it i guess you probably don't need the committee or leave the committee in place the existing or leave the committee in place not to not to recreate the wheel but to make sure the wheel keeps rolling to ensure it continues and continues to have effort and steam yeah i think if we there there's a risk of disbanding the committee just because you might want to
change the scholarship at some point you may want to change the requirements you may want to change the amount so keeping it seems like yeah i guess you keep it i just don't know what it's what the board would dictate that committee to do we don't select the the recipients of it we've actually delegated that to um the administration and i think they did a great job remember that i totally agree um nika's uh um [Music] um video that was phenomenal right so so i just i just wonder if you know if if we have limited resources board members and we have lots of things that we should tackle what would the scholarship committee do because i think lewis got it set up and it's kind of like on autopilot right now i don't know
what we would do i the notion of disbanding never crossed my mind because once we all agreed again boards change and people come and go but once the board said this is what we're going to do i figured that was like forever just as a matter of housekeeping you can probably just have the board stand at that committee stand and have three people that need for five minutes just to again make sure everything's in order and pass it on to the administration every year i mean basically that's what you do there's a like a change order committee which is i was going to ask about change order committee we had for many years after the building of the high school at mw nothing ever happened but we kept it open in case we needed it
and just once a year we kind of just said whoa goodbye and that was it but we left it sitting there that's i don't know i guess absent a you know another type of committee focused on something that's of importance you know i'm having this committee really it would only mean for five minutes i'd you know but if there is another committee out there that might be of more importance i don't know i i i'll take five minutes you'll think what would you take from me i mean if we haven't really changed what's going on you're new you take five minutes too you wanna do an informal vote is that your time down yeah i mean if nobody signed up for it then i mean larry what do you what do you think keep going
i would keep it in place even if it it doesn't you know at some point i think lewis has a point at some point we may wish to say we want two people instead of one if we can manage you know that that kind of a thing so that they just just so that it's there um [Music] as theresa said it may be a committee that that is dormant as opposed to disbanded uh but if if needed it's there and if nobody volunteers for it well when the time comes we ask for volunteers at that point yeah i think a one-and-done is is is not the right course of action i think you know as just for a precedence keep it in place again if it's for five minutes great if it's for three years
from now that all of a sudden there's a windfall of money that goes from the board to this fund you want to make it two people you want to change the values you want to tweak it ever so slightly you know it's in place you don't have to re-establish it again so john that was larry's thoughts would you want to offer your thoughts and we just go down the line i you know i i i'm not sure if we've had precedent or not my knowledge is somewhat limited on the board in terms of board committees um [Music] i don't know if we'd want to set precedent with this committee you know [Music] you know i i do know that we if we think long and hard there might be some unfinished business to that committee
as it pertained to maybe like the investment of those excess funds if there are excess funds i don't know where we stand on that but but i i'd be very hesitant on on precedent of of like abolishing it but if we had abolished another committee in the past not that i can remember i you know i wasn't here last year so i forgive me but if i recall my own like history on the on the board i served on the safety committee and i don't see that safety committee listed here so i think that if we were however we got there again i was not at this meeting last year i was unfortunately i thought i was going to be able to dial in um but that turned out not to be the case when
nancy informed me that i had to be sworn the oath of office prior to being able to zoom into the meeting but be that as it may um for whatever reason the the safety committee was i guess put in pause last year given the current state of affairs that exists in our nation i if i had a choice between scholarship and safety i think i'd be saying we should have a safety committee again well done i don't think that's the choice and we can talk about we can talk about safety in a second but i think okay i mean because of resources and and the like and you know it it's it's the optics of of how we came to remove safety again i wasn't here last year for that that precedent but that precedent
happened and now we have a situation where if that precedent actually happened then we're not going to do it for this committee is it because i brought up the idea that maybe we should you know abolish or or stand down that committee for a second and focus on like more important committees like safety i don't know but i'll just i'll just leave that thought on the table i i think we should just keep we're attempting to make a informal decision on the scholarship committee i don't see this as being and i guess i'll just offer my thoughts i don't see this as being a um either or situation that we have to we we can only have x number of committees you know this is occupying a slot i think that i think having the
scholarship committee is is important frankly the more just thinking about it it is uh we are managing funds so i think having a yearly uh review of that making sure that uh you know we all of those funds are accounted for and uh and reviewing credentials and i think that even one one meeting committee does that well reviewing reviewing reporting reporting how much the scholarship committee has i think that would be a function of that committee right i mean it's taking in money that certainly the audit committee gets it would be included in an audit those those are those are included monthly and harvey's reports i believe but even as it may i've already kind of said my piece the precedent happened last year i'm still not clear maybe someone could explain to it not
tonight but maybe offline on how we went from having a safety committee and having it removed last year and you know it that's really my focus by the way yeah not scholarship but okay it seems uh it seems like we should take those as two different issues though uh so maybe we'll we can talk about the safety committee in a second uh richard thought it's on scholarship yeah so i kind of agree i have to uh agree with john i think scholarship committee is important i think uh it gives us the flexibility to change you know the amount the how many recipients there are that's that but i don't think it should be a scholarship or another committee we probably can add another committee but i do have the same questions about the safety committee
and the status of of where we are with that um because i saw last year there was a official board safety committee and i don't see it on this list on the website i haven't seen it on the under the board board committees so maybe we have a separate discussion on that so scholarship committee i i don't have any problem with it but i also think we have to discuss other uh adding other committees i agree i do want to yeah we will address safety in a second but just quick recommendation that if it's getting pushed to august to discuss that committee maybe we watch last year's meeting just to hear the conversation without us trying to figure out who said what but hopefully it was streamed and we can hear directly from the board
you know why safety was pulled maybe that would be a good next step uh in advance of august yep okay well hold on i just want to keep going down uh louis i'm a safety uh sorry scholarship committee you're good with keeping it yeah i voiced my opinions earlier jim it seems to me that you know for one meeting a year anything that the scholarship committee could do could just be handled at the board level because it's going to be very minor but it's you know that's a preference it's certainly not a hill i'm going to die on i might i don't think i don't think it's a very uh huge decision when went together i'm happy to go either way if it doesn't really matter got it i'm trying to i was just trying
to look up i forgot to bring my computer tonight get uh messed up today but i don't know i'm trying to find if we have a board procedure about just what committee's you know the broader question are there permanent committees um you know what's the what's the process for forming new committees dissolving committees um but i don't know what that procedure is off the top of my head so there are required committees that by the state that there are certain committees that are required by the state but we can yeah but um as as far as a scholarship committee i i think the the point of this is you can add committees if we decide as a board we want to that's that's not an issue because i have a question about another committee that
isn't on here that never was on well i don't know but as far as the scholarship committee definitely keep it on and i do think do you have to have three members on a committee um well you're a de facto member of every community right i think the uh it would make sense to have a minimum of three just so that if there's any decision to be made you have an odd you know enough right but i'm just saying there's nothing written in stone because if you had i don't believe so no no if you had two people and you did have a decision to make you would be a de facto three right but my point is that in a case of a scholarship committee i don't i don't think it should be removed
we should go back and look at what happened with the safety committee because frankly i don't remember and um the as far as adding back committees as long as the board agrees to it i don't i don't see an issue in any case but i don't think one thing hinges on another at all i don't see where one has to do with the other um the question i was going to ask if you don't mind we're going to vote on it can i ask a question about something else we're not going to vote on any committees right now no it's just a discussion i'm sorry yeah uh harvey with the with the creation now of our building fund and the different work we're going to be doing in our buildings will we require a change
order committee that's usually based at the board as a whole we bring it to the board as a whole oh you do then you don't have a committee no you know because my past history there was a committee you can it just sometimes it makes it a little more expeditious you know you can just pull the committee together real quick three people instead of trying to bring like nine um you could you could probably run it through the facilities committee also just just curious and that's why it came up just now because we're talking about committees i didn't know if because of this building the the renovations in the building if we will have a change order committee because um i think that was something that with the last the the last work that was
done with the high school originally back when i didn't know was there a change order committee then i don't know i wasn't here then i that's good i'm glad to hear that um but certainly it's something that could be explored if we feel the need is there again it's to expedite things um when a change order is necessary at a specific point in time the last thing you want is to hold up the project and say let's just wait till the next board meeting sometimes we can't wait that long so it's easy for me to just pick up the phone just three members and say hey do you have time to meet today boom we can get it done okay i'm not trying to make things difficult i'm just trying to look for a way
that we can actually hopefully avoid any of the pitfalls of of anything of last time sure that's all no no problem that's it thank you okay best thoughts on scholarship committee thanks yeah uh i would say keep it there's nothing wrong with uh mentioning next to it inactive i mean i've seen committees i've seen uh you're bored you're a member of certain professional organization or whatever i mean there's the inactive status like in professional engineering i mean many people not paying their dues for whatever reason right i mean they say inactive so they put next to their name pe professional engineers parentheses inactive so it can be inactive till where we need it it comes back it becomes active again you activate reactivate the committee that's one two going back to uh john's uh comment
when i was and again you know i don't have my computer i was like looking at the paper copy and i know in my head we have eight committees and i'm counting seven and i recounted i counted seven seven till john says oh safety okay safety number eight now in this book as an introduction when we brought in the welcome you need to find the book so we all know that this is that's the board member manual ccsd board of education 2022 the safety is still there and i went through it i read the material you know as they say do your homework and this is kind of when i saw again the safety committee now uh the goals okay i'm reading from the the goals working with the district to maintain and improve the
safety and security in the school district's facilities that might be the number one committee we should have uh so uh it should come back since i'm still new to the board i don't know why it was removed i mean maybe i'm not interested in knowing like why it was removed with what i'm interested in is like bring it back so to uh to terry's point before and i just try to collect everybody's point i think the well as a reminder we're not taking action right now i think we're discussing the committees and i think that there is uh certainly some homework to be done on everyone's part about the safety committee so i think the terry recommended going back to last year's meeting just so that we're we're all caught up and then we can
we can discuss uh we can discuss further i don't want to i don't want to say exactly what the next step would be at the next meeting we would push it forward in one way whether it's a you know we have a discussion item now that everybody's back on the same page with it i just feel at this point right now there's going to be some people who are a bit informed on it some people that aren't we can take a little bit of time to do more of our homework and then if it through that discussion process it is determined that we want to vote on the creation of a safety committee then we can we can do that perhaps at a subsequent meeting right so um this could all happen in fairly rapid
succession i don't want to go from we discuss it and expect you know to establish it right now i think so there's a bit of there's a bit of homework to be done and then we can and certainly just to one finer point we would have the freedom to do that we're not we're not limited to establishing a committee at next meeting as i understand it though brendan i i understand we're going to look at it next time that's the that's the bottom line but well i my understanding is we have a conflict i i haven't seen the new handbook i was not on that that committee um but it sounds like that that safety committee is in the handbook that the new board members got yeah and so either that needs to be updated
as part of the work of that committee um but i think to saying next time without saying hey we don't have a safety committee because i believe i i i don't think that's in the board's best interest to to say that right now that we'd have to restand or create a new one i i would stay away from that just my view margaret um yeah i just wanted to let everybody know that uh i'm the the person who's in charge of the new member handbook committee and the updating of it um and i obviously dropped the ball and that with us whether it was um knocked off the realms that i did not update that so that that discrepancy is totally my fault and i apologize for that um but just like the uh the
scholarship meeting or the committee the the updating of the new member handbook literally takes about 10 minutes um so i have no problem doing that in a slightly better way next time as far as making sure that all of our committees align um and i will make sure that that gets done well for the upcoming whatever we wind up deciding but literally it does take 10 minutes and then it goes to all the new members same with the committee the scholarship committee i see it as being five minutes i'm happy to sit on that as well okay so uh i think the again to summarize the the movement on on safety i think there's uh i would implore everyone to um to go back just watch last year's meeting i think we can we can
discuss uh louis creation of agenda how exactly that would fit in whether it's a discussion item in next meeting if there's an action item but i think we can start moving this forward to you know have an official consideration and uh at the same time that's richard do you want to chime in so i just have a question or a point of clarification so basically there was for whatever reasons that may be and we'll go back and look at the live stream so between july whatever of july first of 2021 to now there's been no board safety committee i just want to get a point of clarification on that right okay thank you okay so uh i think number one re-examination of safety committee number two it seems like we're all generally okay with keeping
scholarship committee to be clear like it would be up to the members of the scholarship committee to determine the cadence at which they meet but i think you know having a a committee that is there if needed would probably be a you know the result and then a larger point between now and our next meeting in august just a reminder to email me directly and lewis the your uh your top three if you wanted to put top four just in case but they would be listed in order of preference one being the one you would most like to be on four being the one that you would not i would suggest if you're going to put the scholarship committee probably make that your fourth uh just because we know that it's probably not going to
meet all that much hey brendan just just to to clarify one thing that i heard teresa say because i'm not sure where we got to but could we get to a decision on how to deal with that that change order uh uh potential whether it goes to the facilities committee and we expand their you know their purpose and charge to delegate them the ability on on the fly like harvey was saying or we stand up a new committee i think it would be good to have that resolved when we get to the next meeting got it so that's the next meeting rather got it so scholarship committee we're good examination of safety committee um examination of change order committee or change order yeah change order function within the facilities committee or its own committee and
then uh emailing your preferences to me and louis one through four and if anybody wants to include their willingness to volunteer for a chairperson ship at the time that would be time to do it and we'll hash it out once we have everybody's full information i think that concludes the discussion for now of our committees so that brings us to i believe the second public comment uh so any uh visitors who would like to speak this is your second opportunity to do so i would again just ask you to step forward say your name into the microphone and limit your comment to three minutes thank you so i am not a visitor and i do not want to comment but i'm mary jane pitt i'm kind of um as mr burger said the new ken
cashman um not by necessarily my choice by the fact that ken retired and there is no new ken cashman yet so i'll be popping into your meetings and um just trying to keep you covered in the local actually i only came tonight because i heard that superintendent dave sings and i thought maybe he was going to sing and i needed some entertainment good articles complaint files good pr well thank you and welcome aboard you have very big shoes to fill but i'm sure you you probably know that good to have you here okay so let's uh we move to comments from the board uh i'll start with larry thank you although i can't say ditto can i um first of all uh i want to welcome bass and richard it's going to be an interesting
year and it's going to be fun uh sometimes um richard so third time was a charm yeah um i would also and i'm not quite sure how to bring this up or the the way is going to be handled but i want to make sure that the concerns that were brought to us tonight are addressed and gotten back to us that's it thank you thank you larry john so first off richard bass welcome thank you we look forward to serving together i know you guys are going to be dedicated and and served with distinction so thank you for stepping up to the plate and uh um looking to serve uh cornwall it's an important community to get right and i know on your presence on the boardwalk will help us keep the ship straight so
thank you um brendan lewis congratulations um you know i think it's very important in this day and age that when differences of opinion surface that adults model that discussion and get to a resolution in a very what i'll call um old-fashioned way which is with good demeanor professionalism and the like and i knowing the people on this committee are on this board rather that i'm sure that we will continue to to exemplify the professionalism that we have in the past and as we move forward we'll encounter whatever challenge with with the same type of of professionalism like larry i was a little bit taken back by miss makin's comments and i will just say that it is now on our radar and i look forward to hearing more about it soon [Music] richard so i
want to thank first the community for allowing me this opportunity to serve on the board of education along with the other eight members congrats to brendan to lewis i know you'll do a great job and i share the same sentiment as larry and john the public comments that were made tonight you know i was i definitely want to be kept up to date and i want to make sure that this can be taken care of so i expect that the board as a whole will be uh kept in the loop on this so thanks again and i forgot to mention this part um it's an honor being sworn in in the very building from which i graduated from just about two years ago i wanted to make sure i made that uh i added that
little uh point in there but uh thank you and thanks to everyone who came thank you thanks richard tim thank you brendan um yeah miss meekins thank you uh for bringing your concerns to the board i echo um the sentiments my other board members certainly um the things we heard um are unacceptable in our district uh i'm here you know we're members of the board i'm a parent in the district i'm a parent first and a board member second and i certainly wouldn't want my children uh to go through those things so i'm sure that terry will keep us surprised it sounds like you two have been in contact so um i hope that we can work a resolution to this but i don't think anybody on this board um was happy to hear uh
your comments this you think we thank you for bringing them but we weren't happy to hear what happened so thank you for that um welcome to bass and richard uh congratulations uh congratulations um to brendan on round two uh congratulations to brendan and lewis on the leadership election and uh i think we're going to have another you know i think last year we had a very good year as a board we had a great outcome at the end of the year and i'm looking forward to another successful year and a good working relationship uh with all nine members of the board thank you thanks jim theresa i also want to welcome everyone congratulate um both you lewis and brendan and um the new board members and also thank people that want to stick their neck
out and want those terrible positions as president vice president anyway um [Music] every every year now this will be my 21st year on a board of education although uh my third on this one and every year i had the same mantra coming to that meeting and that reorganization every every year i said the same thing i was brushing my hair which got shorter and grayer and that was i am here to support and represent the children of this community and school district that is my top job that was what i was elected to do now what comes under that is if you take good care of the children then you are taking good care of the parents and taxpayers but that is the priority it isn't um it isn't and it will never be nor
should it be about politics or anything else it's simply about the children in the district and that's our job and i said it again tonight and i will always keep that in mind and i believe this board does as well but sometimes it's good just to kind of say it out loud because in the minutia of the everyday world where everything has become so politicized i don't ever want to see a board of education that way so again i say welcome to all the new and thank god for all the old larry and and uh good luck to everybody thank you thank you bless you thanks brendan uh first of all congratulations to brandon and lewis i look forward to serving the next three years on the board and [Music] today is my first day
again the computer did not help me but i think i managed to pass the test so far i'd like to mention something that happened tonight which is kind of very important i thought the diversity of opinions okay i mean we should always celebrate that and the vote of five to four was very healthy very democratic okay so so anytime we we hear about we're nine members of vote nine zero that might send sometimes the wrong message i mean i mean there are there's there's a term used outside rubber stamps i mean we're not gonna be that so i celebrate the vote tonight of 5'4 and as i promised the community when i was running this is the first time ever i run for an office like this and uh i promise to be all ears
the community is concerned to the constituents concerned and the the constitution sometimes we forget some parts the first that comes to mind are the parents the their kids right our students the teachers the staff and the taxpayers out there now taxpayers you have taxpayers who don't have kids you have taxpayers who are single you have taxpayers who had kids but their kids graduated they're not here in the school anymore you have constituents paying taxes right and they don't have kids they don't have anything in the game they just own a store somewhere so i promised everybody all the concerns to be all ears to their concerns i welcome opinions uh from everybody that's why i'm here tonight and specifically after the concern we heard from the parent tonight i'm [Music] looking forward to hearing more
about it i want to know about i don't know what happened thank you very much thank you uh margaret i don't know if margaret can deliver a comment it occurred to me that i left her out of the committee discussion so margaret fine um no i'm just kidding um so thank you very much congratulations to bass and richard on joining uh the board it's going to be a great year i'm sure um the one main point i wanted to just say and i wrote it down real fast is in education we work together to develop the whole child to teach them how to dissect digest to empathize to develop as part of a positive member of society we expect teach and model acceptance for everyone and everyone deserves a safe place in which to develop
and learn the cornwall that i heard about tonight is not one that i'm proud to represent so i will support policy that holds everyone accountable to create a safe space for every member of our ccsd family regardless of race creed color or orientation so i'm moving on to positive things and i look forward to really helping everybody feel like they are a valued member of this family that's it thank you margaret louis and the ditto lives on um so it was mentioned tonight about uh you know model behavior and um it was said this evening about things that were learned from home um miss megan's you know just the evidence that you being here is the strength that gives your daughter the ability to push forward and stand up for what's right and push her
concerns forward so i appreciate that and applaud you on that um and i too have the same sentiments as my board my fellow board members and that um these concerns excuse me should be looked into as deep as necessary and and just to make sure that we are we are the district that we say we are so again i appreciate your comments this evening bass and richard welcome aboard um brandon welcome aboard good to have you back maybe uh it's gonna be a great year guys it's gonna be good you know good stuff um um it's a lot of work it's it's also you know you know if you're here you enjoy it and you you know why you know but you do um and then just very simply everybody have a great and happy
and safe summer and uh um you know be well thank you enjoy vacations if you haven't planned thanks louis um i just want to start by kind of echoing what everybody else said miss megan's um what what you did tonight was very important i appreciate not just the um not just what you said but the strength i'm sure it took to get up there and say it and i think a lot of times it's the specifics of a story that really uh matter and so i just particularly appreciate a lot of the specifics you put into it i think it makes real um for a lot of people an experience that you know they don't have to confront themselves so i i appreciate that and um ayako what everybody else said that we're gonna certainly
keep an eye on your situation and and hope for every resolution that's possible uh i want to congratulate our newest board members richard and bass i type some of my notes out everybody in case you don't know so i'm not being rude um as you've probably realized serving on a board is a big responsibility and you should be commended for stepping forward and accepting that i think anybody that steps forward and gives their time takes the occasional uh public flack which you know if you haven't done already you will uh all in the service of others for no personal benefit certainly has my complete and unfailing respect that goes for the other six that up here that i've already worked with and certainly that applies to you too so welcome thank you for stepping up
we all look forward to working with you in the in the months and years ahead to lewis thank you for continuing to serve as vice president i know as a first-time president myself it'll help having somebody who's been there with me even if you don't appreciate all that europe has to offer if anybody wants to have a good laugh just ask louis how his vacation was he's very honest [Music] and then to everybody else who is up for a vote tonight i know um you know thank you for your willingness to go that extra mile i mean there's service and then there's then there's extra service um you know nothing about this whole process is easy being up for a vote taking a vote um but i echo what what bass said you know i
think it's all part of i think it's all part of a healthy process you know it shows the community that we don't have to agree on everything but we can still move forward and provide the leadership and stability that this district uh deserves and expects from us so um and i as i thought this out i you know i'm not saying that to anyone else for the first time in fact most of you have said that to me so i i i know that this is a thought that everybody has at the front of their mind and it's just further validation of the fact that we have a great board and everybody is up here for the right reasons and finally thank you for giving me your uh your confidence uh to to serve as
president i um you know i look at this position as definitely one of responsibility certainly not of power um i i'm here to help um facilitate collaboration among all of us and try to get the most out of out of all of us and we are we are all uh one of nine uh it's only together that we are aboard and i think we uh it goes without saying we are all um as essential as the next person no person more or less so um i look at my role as just making sure that uh all of us have the opportunity to to really uh all of us feel empowered to offer our best uh effort and insight throughout the rest of this year uh and also uh working with our great administrators that we
had a great end of the year um last year and i think we are we are set up for for success uh and i'm just part of happy to be part of not only this board but to work so closely with you terry harvey and megan and i think we are entering an exciting new era as a school district and i think there are many many great things ahead so thank you our next meeting isn't until august so to everybody continue enjoying uh your summer and we'll see you back here in over a month all right this meeting is adjourned thank you thank you was that oh i have to we have to vote on the i can't just you know right right yeah uh so a motion to it during the meeting so moved
