in favor thank you madam president thank you um moving on to 501 the presentation the learning communities for schools success success program that's the lcsp good evening board President Chavez vice president kto Board of Trustees superintendent SDA staff students and Community my my name is Dr Ana artiguez and I have the privilege of being the director of social emotional learning uh and tonight we wanted to uh come forward and just share our annual update uh focused on specifically the lcsp but also talking a little bit about the other programming that comes out of uh the social emotional learning Department as well so again as I said we're going to start off by talking about the lcsp um and I'm going to say one of the things with the seal department is that over the next

year or two you're going to hear a lot of acronyms coming from us um lcsp ccpp it's there's just going to be a lot of acronyms we'll always make sure that we really kind of spill it out for everybody um so we'll be talking about that we'll also be talking about our counselors and the work that they've been able to do in this last year the number of students they were able to support and in what ways they were supported and also talking a little bit about what data we were able to come away with in terms of what our kids are exper experiencing uh and then we will also be talking about the wellness centers and just giving you a brief update as well as the Community Schools um so without any further Ado

so lcsp um so lcsp like I said it's one of our many acronyms and this is actually our second uh cohort run with lcsp so the lcsp stands for learning communities for school Success program uh the very first round that we were part of it um we were part of cohort 3 and it actually allowed us to establish this department and also establish the director position for social emotional learning uh and we are now uh been granted uh cohort 7 this was granted to us last year it's allowing us to maintain the director of social emotional learning position as well as we were able to add a child welfare and and attendance position uh this last year uh and we are working very closely with uh child with the CW a liaison as well as

student services to be able to build out more tier one and tier 2 uh Services uh around chronic absenteeism um and so again just a little bit about the goals uh it's really about us working with evidence-based non-punitive programs uh and practices to keep the state's most V vulner vulnerable peoples in school um and in terms of what we ushered in with cohort 3 that was when we ushered in kimoi uh and it spread from school to school across the elementaries um we also ushered in uh more opportunities for restorative justice practices to come into the school through partnership with seeds um we also ushered in uh different types of opportunities for Community circles to be happening as well in classrooms particularly in the middle school and so again that was the first uh round

of uh cohort in terms of the lcsp piece and and then for this year like I said for this next three-year cycle we are going to continue to build out uh what's in existence and so I'm going to talk a little bit about that so just kind of an annual progress report to tell you what we've been able to do with the funding uh we work very closely with Aaliyah uh Innovations and their work is specifically focused on trauma informed practice and Workforce resiliency um so they worked uh diligently and were meeting with different uh groups of staff uh to provide support and to really give them opportunities to build upon their resiliency so that they could be in the work and be well in the work uh and so as you can see uh

they served our school counselors our community Liaisons uh they served different divisions and departments in the district uh they also work closely with the office assistants and the admin assistants um and one of the reasons that those four specific titles were chosen is because those tend to be the employ es that interfac with families and the communities and students a lot more and so we wanted to make sure that if they were holding space for our families that we also had the opportunity to hold space and help them continue to build upon their resiliency uh and then uh monthly school counselor PLC like I said they were uh took part in that we also make sure every year that we have a retreat and an inservice for them um also uh the other thing that

it allowed us to do was to mobilize rotation of counselors to provide short-term support to students uh staff Andor families that were impacted by some sort of trauma um and so that's something that we've been able to do over the last several years is really respond and respond in an organized intentional and thoughtful manner uh and again so with kochis we've continued to really up it and we've continued to train more and more teachers we've also continued to give out more kids uh so that um kimochi Corners are being created in schools uh and there's really um more of an introduction and there's more uh supports being brought into the uh classrooms the other thing that we did uh was more division focused uh and then from the division focused work we were able to

rule that out as well so one of the things that we did do was we conducted the Fidelity Integrity assessment uh some people know it as the Swift uh and when we conducted that the purpose behind conducting it was to make sure that we had a sense of where we had strengths and where some of the gaps were or opportunities for growth were right and so uh this is foundationally uh grounded in positive conditions of learning and it was focused on uh three domains uh and then from that we also began to curate resources uh of tier one level um and really trying to build out capacity so that we could further support not just our students not just our families and Community but also our staff um and then as I said earlier the

child welfare and attendance liaison was hired in February February March of 2024 um so it's still a pretty new position in terms of the work that we're doing together under lcsp uh but it's given us an opportunity to partner more deeply with our supervisors Liaisons and school counselors uh and partner more deeply with student services as well uh some of the expenditures for the lcsp budget were around staff salaries as I said earlier staff salary for myself as well as for the CWA uh extended Duty for counselors teachers and other folks who have chosen to participate in professional development around kimochis son to grow uh or one of our many other programs that we're supporting uh and then also materials and supplies so materials and supplies I've never ordered so many kimoi kits in my

life um but you know it I'm going to tell you that the kids really love it and they really connect with the with the kimoi so I hope that you know when you're um visiting uh schools and classrooms I'm hoping that you know maybe the kids can talk to you a little bit about what what they're seeing with the kis uh and then some contracted services so the contracted services our partners are actually uh on this slide so kimis is one sewn to grow is another one that we've been really building out across the middle schools and the TK to8 uh Sky schools is one that we've partnered with for quite a period of time uh and then also Aaliyah which I mentioned earlier and so like I said cohort 7 what we've been doing

is uh we've been doing a lot of leveraging of funding so it's a lot of uh people like to use the phrase blending and braiding right so it's a lot of blending and braiding of funding uh the funding streams that we have access to so through that blending and braiding uh with cohort 7 we were able to expand son to grow son to grow is actually anal program um that does an ex anal check-in with kids every week and it's all done by computer right because kids love to be on technology and so it's all done by computer and what it does is if a child um shows that they're may be feeling some negative emotions and you're starting to see a pattern what it does is it alerts the teacher it can also alert

the school counselor um and it gives uh the teacher and or other adults an opportunity to respond to the student in terms of the feedback that they type into the into the computer right um and so we were able to expand it from just uh William Shepard Middle School which was like the pilot Flagship School of it we've taken it from Will Shepard and it's now across all TK to eights as well as the middle schools uh and then again in terms of kis we've been able to expand across a larger section of classrooms particularly a lot of our elementary schools uh and been able to provide more uh materials and supplies for them in terms of being able to have access to the kids uh and then like I said the concentrated funding uh

has been for the CWA as well as for the director of social emotional learning okay and I'm going to turn it over to TOA thank you good evening board President Chavez board vice president Kinto Board of Trustees and superintendent Sera our staff students and Community my name is juletta Flores and I'm the coordinator of mental wellness support services at arusd um I want to go ahead and start off by clarifying I know in your PDF file um it does say counselor data for 22 um 23 um that is a typo it is actually our counselor data from last school year from 23 24 so this is the breakdown of our counseling data so this is how many students we've had in our district um and how many of those students were serviced by our school

counselors and also our school counseling interns um so the last year we were able to serve um 88% of our um student bodies and um 6,611 students um were served by either the school counselors or the school counseling interns and 6,256 of those students um are with unduplicated identifiers so that's our students who are classified as elll Foster youth mckin vento um their social economic status or if they're in special education we broke down our data even more to kind of go over what other trauma trends that we we call it in our schools um so our counselors were able to gather this data um and out of the 1,118 um students that were supported um we noticed that there was a high percentage of emotional disregulation when we talk about emotional disregulation that's anything

from um emotional disab um instability any angry Outburst um anything that requires any deescalation from the school um from the school counselors um and then 600 89 of our students um reported grief and loss um situations or issues so this means any students that were um grieving death abandonment family separation divorce um incarceration deportation um or any family illnesses or hospitalization so those were our two biggest trauma Trends in our schools um followed by everything else that you see broken down um which is bullying violence abuse self harm suicide ideation any student with mental health support um that needed mental health support as well the counseling services that were rendered by both our school counselors and school counsel um counseling interns um we rendered individual counseling um so that is one-on-one support we also did

small group counseling um any crisis response or interventions that was needed and also guidance lessons um when we talk about individual counseling um the three domains are personal or social emotional counseling um academic counseling as well as College and Career counseling anything that fell under small groups um was anything around conflict resolution or mediations um anything that needed communication effective communication skills social skills grief and loss groups um transitioning to middle school for our fifth graders and then transitioning to high school as well for our eighth graders um and then the guidance lessons um there's actually a variety that our counselors go ahead and um present in the classrooms they do um introduction to counseling so they introduce themselves explain what counseling means um what counselors do um they do everything around social emotional learning

so that includes kis they do Kochi lessons introduce the characters they go deep into the keys of communication um and learn and be about their feelings and the social awareness um they also do everything around social skills presentations bullying prevention or anti-bullying um presentations career exploration and academic and College Planning we do have counseling interns this year as well um these are our Partnerships that we have this school year we have um uh 11 School counseling interns currently that are serving 18 of our schools we partnered up with San Jose State University University of San Francisco Alla International University St Mary's College Concordia University and California State University East Bay um and again these are our interns that are either on their first year or second year of School counseling going towards their PPS credential

thank you okay and uh next we're just going to talk a little bit about our wellness centers and just kind of give you an update uh and just like there was a typo uh for a couple of pages back there was also a small shift that we had to do so I just wanted to call attention to it uh in terms of the wellness centers we're still in the midst of hiring so we were able to hire two internal client uh two internal clinicians I'm sorry uh and uh at this point we're also going through the RFP process the RFP is going to be posted to our website tomorrow uh and we also uh posted the advertisement as well so there's going to be an RFP uh for us to try to find an organization

that can help us fill the six remaining clinician spots unfortunately at this point in time we haven't had a high amount of interest uh and the other issue is that the people who have shown an interest and applied for it do not meet uh the requirements in order to do this kind of work they need to have clinical background they have to have been done with graduate school and working towards or under an Associates number um and uh we have not had enough applicants and so we had to find our plan B and so this is the plan can be uh and like I said uh right now we're in the RFP process it will be posted tomorrow we are following a very very tight timeline um so that we can make sure that we

move uh contractually uh hopefully uh for the November board meeting so that we can get our wellness centers up and running in terms of the logistics of it um right now like I said we've hired two they will be deploying into the schools next week we've been working diligently with them uh in terms of development and creation of infr structure as well as everything and anything that would be needed our department believes in uh not Reinventing the wheel but we also understand that when you're building something you also have to be okay with developing things from the ground up right so we're doing a little bit of both as we move forward uh and so some of the things that we're working on in terms of infrastructure has been scope and sequence for the work

that's going to be taking place and how it's going to take place standard operating procedures so that there's nothing left to question in terms of how does everything work from A to Z for our wellness centers our Wellness Center clinicians and how they function in schools uh also uh working on fors documentation and billing uh because we're going in the direction of electronic uh health records uh and then also always looking for next steps in terms of sustainable funding streams uh or Pathways and so there will be a lot of conversation within this next year about Lea Bop uh as well as um the fee schedule so additional services and supports that are starting to come in with um the wellness centers at this point in time so I I'm so excited to say that

last week we had our first uh fluffy visitors at our uh at our schools that are going to have Wellness Center sites so we are partnering with an organization called pause to share and what they do is they have certified uh animal the uh animal therapy dogs uh that they're bringing on to the campus and I'm going to say that um right now when they show up on campus you are pretty much seeing every single grade level come through to interact with the dogs and the type of joy and and healing that you're seeing with kids as they're interacting uh we'll share pictures with you as soon as we've collected them all um and then the other piece like I said sewn to grow that is something that we've been blending and braiding funding so

we're using a combination of the wellness center Grants as well as um the lcsp grant uh and then faces right now is currently working out at aptitude they're working with students who uh have shown a risk of continued chronic absenteeism so they're starting to put together small tier 2 groups to work with them uh and work around root cause and then Sandy Hook promise was something we were going to bring in this year uh but it's actually something we're probably going to table and hold until next year um because it's a larger system that we need to put into place okay and then Community Schools so we received uh we received notification in February that we uh were chosen to have uh a total of 10 Community Schools we are still waiting for the again

right and so uh when you're applying for Grants and when they're letting you know that you received it there's the inal email saying by the way you received it and then there's the formal Grant award notification uh that tells tells you this is exactly how much you're going to get for each school this is when it's going to be distributed or dispersed all of those pieces uh the last email we received from the CDE was September 11th letting us know that they were still in the process that there's a they're running behind at this point in time uh and they would update us once the letters were going to be sent out so we still have no correspondence from them at this point I know that we you know received the grant award we just

haven't received the Gan and the Gan is what's needed to move Mo everything else forward so I think that that's it uh any questions that we can answer for you at this point thank you for the presentation um very thorough um would I I have a couple of questions sure so you said that we wouldn't be seeing the Sandy Hook program till next year around when next year so we actually want to get it started next year in the fall we're looking at potentially August or September uh and the thing with the Sandy Hook piece is it's it's a rather large uh roll out and we have to do it a couple of schools at a time uh and so we are going to go ahead and and roll it out in the fall uh

but my hope is that in the springtime early summertime we're going to be able to sit down and really uh schedule out with site administrators what the roll out's going to look like I probably we're probably going to want to start with middle school and then TK to8 and then Elementary uh and so we're really going to do uh more intentional planning with site administrators around this piece so for the wellness centers um you said that um what my question is do you have the Personnel for the documentation and the billing or when you get the money to do that is it part of the that program or does it come out of the general education fund which fund does it come out of so in terms of so let me try let me try

to explain this because I'm also learning this all myself so in terms of the EHR what we did was we worked with our current uh thirdparty vendor so the third party vendor is leader services and so we've been working with them because they're already doing some level of billing for special ed students this is going to give us the capacity to do billing for General ed students right and so the general ed students that for example uh qualify for medical we will now be able to do some level of billing through Lea Bop and that's going to bring the funding in and so the way that the pay the way that the payment works out and I might uh defer a little bit to uh assistant superintendent Del sels uh but the way that it

works out is that um the pay the pay happens once the monies have been recouped there's like a percentage of it that they get uh out of the money that's that's reimbursed to us and again I'm still learning all of these different moving Parts uh but from my understanding like the things that they've done for us thus far have been free of charge because literally all they're doing is taking what they've already created for special ed and just kind of formalizing it so that it's going to have General Ed information for our kids that that's was my next question what percentage because you know how it costs so much for the to to to do all these services for for the special sure so I think the do you do you want to respond to

that one I actually don't know the exact percentage um because I believe it's different for General Ed students than it is for special ed there is a complicated formula for special ed um it runs around 53% I want to say um for special ed so we'll have to look into the General Ed side okay thank you very much any pro thank you so much for your presentation and it's really exciting to to see so many of our students accessing the counseling services um so I'm really excited to see the numbers and I had a question about um how are how is counseling presented to students how do they know it's an option is it to the parents or how like do they get a presentation at the beginning of the school year how does that

work so at the beginning of the school year what happens is counselors will normally go into classrooms at the beginning uh the first real exposure for our kids is through guidance lessons which is why you saw so many different uh choices in terms of guidance lessons that are being delivered and so one of the first uh guidance lessons normally is intro to counselor right the counsel is introducing themselves they're talking about the different type of work that they can do they're talking about how the kids can access them right whether it's like filling out their own self-referral and putting in a box or what have you um so again I'm just going to kind of also refer and defer to my practice when I was a school counselor because that's what I did for much

of my time uh in the schools um I would go into caitos and I would do presentations the gitos for the parents um I would also make sure that uh at meetings I was continuously staying in contact with teachers and letting them know here's the referral process this is what you can send to me but also know if that there's a if there's a crisis of any type that you can actually just bring the child directly to me right uh and so students uh become aware normally through guidance lessons uh I will say also one of the other things that counselors uh do uh is also do different events and activities on campus normally like around lunchtime so for example towards the end of October we have Red Ribbon Week and a lot of counselors

take that as an opportunity to be able to do a lot of anti-drug messaging through like upholding things that kids should be engaging in like positive adaptive strategies right uh and so there's also events and things that uh counselors are involved in during the lunchtime during the after school time uh at times that also gives them some level of exposure to the kids but again I'd say that most it is through the guidance lessons I think that's the first introduction and a number of our counselors continuously go in with more content um with with the guidance lessons I have a couple more questions um and I know you mentioned in regards to the um faces uh so there're not going to be doing that piece right now no so so faces is working with optitude

through an enhancement Grant with the wellness centers and they're going to be doing tier 2 work only with kiddos that are struggling with chronic absente the other piece that was there uh we are actually going through an RFP process right and so it's going to be open to anyone who wants to apply and who wants to bid that is going to be posted tomorrow on our website um and we turned the RFP process around pretty quick thank you business office um yeah so we turned it around pretty quick and just last so the uh basis on aptitude is more of a life skills class just in general so it's more small group right so it's more focused on so for example if students if the root cause to Chronic absenteeism is because children are are

grieving right because of a loss of a parent or a loved one then they are facilitating tier 2 groups with those kids specifically focused on you know coping with grief and loss right it's it's about us really doing that deeper work to understand what's getting in the way for kids uh and bringing opportunities for small group because one of the most powerful things for with kids in small group is that they can see that they're not alone that they're experiencing something that the person next to them is also experiencing in some way thank you yeah of course Dr I want to thank you on your team on this you know for bringing this to the board's attention you know it's great that we're serving you know kids and all the other parts of their life

that that have to was it be resolved before they get into the classroom just a quick question on the community school so the implement ation Grant was turned in in February we received a notification regarding the successful application so do we there an approximate timeline uh of the notification and you know what do we have an estimate on how large the grant is so the Grant in total and I'm going to look towards uh assistant superintendent disel as well so the Grant in total for my understanding over a fiveyear span of time is going to be pretty close to $12 million right uh now in terms of the services and and the Gan itself we were supposed to receiv received the Gan in July originally when everyone applied we were told that July would be

when things would be dispersed information would be shared in July we got an email saying it was going to be August in August we got an email saying it was going to be September uh we have yet to receive something after September 11th um you know and we are continuing to to ask them if they have uh any kind of updates and they're continuing to ask us to be patient and wait yeah so at this point in time the last communication officially from them was September 11th and I'm hoping I'm hoping that that again is on its way in this next week or two so I guess the second question would be do you know does board need to contact the this the State Assembly member the state senator to get this sort of cleared

up or something where where are or are we in no person's land here um I'm not quite sure how to respond to the question trusty fam um I would I would say that I don't think that uh it would hurt for us to reach out maybe outside of myself yeah I don't I don't know I'm not sure how to respond thank you of course so seeing no more questions thank you very much thank you so much for your time tonight pardon take public comment no I'm gonna take it right now I was asking Mar B who's on the clock um do we have any public comment on this item seeing none uh we're going to move on to 502 presentation the East Side Education Foundation San Jose University gear up Grant thank you Mr Manny

good evening nice to see you again under different circumstances um want to present some information this evening regarding a partnership that we have with Alam rock that involves Eide Education Foundation and Europe um which uh we titled College in your future it's a terrific opportunity um for alamro a grade students and I just want to share some information kind of giv you on that thank you Daniel so a little bit about the um the foundation um we started the Spartan East Side promise about seven years ago and it is uh we approached San state it is a partnership where the university agreed to um automatically accept into San State any graduate from the East side Union High School District if they meet the minimum adg requirements it's a tremendous opportunity I would argue it's one

of the the most systemic um uh initiatives because it dramatically has increased the number of students who've been entering San State um over the past several years it's almost tripled the number of students who are gradu we're about close to 800 students now uh from the original uh about 250 that we're attending Santa State the um didn't me it's not a free ride you still have to meet the adg requirements in case you're not familiar with those those are 15 required courses that you have to take in high school and um so the students do need to meet those a little bit more about that um in just a little bit um we also have been involved with um implementing the I'm trying to read this from a distance here Daniel look it down there

calling savings account very much I'm old there we go thank you and uh the college savings uh calc kids which we just started here recently in Alam Rock and the reason cow kids is important we actually got it started before the state took it on we had a partnership with aite credit union um and the reasoning behind is the research has shown that if a student saves as little as $500 in a college savings account it um increased the chances of not just enrolling but graduating from college four times four to one ratio so cow kids estate is taking that on and they are opening College savings accounts um for uh for the students we also raise scholarship funds for the students graduating from Eastside we've given out about now close to $130,000 we'll be

giving out another $50,000 this year and then um we also fund the Spartan summer program so that the students graduating have a two-e orientation at San J State and it's a terrific uh partnership the University it we pay for it the counselors from east side are there as well and it gives the students a hit start they enroll their classes they get head started enrolling and we already know that the students who go through that program uh are more likely to still remain in school after the first year than if students who do not we also started um this past year the Spartan ambassadors right now we have 10 uh graduates from the East side who are in various Majors uh we have them for mechanical engineering accounting um speech therapy psychology and they are

ambassadors that we kind of take out to the students because they're listen more to them they're closer to their age and they're going to listen to adults talking about the Spartan isai promise and the adg requirements and of course our signature uh major fundraising event is the Hall of Fame dinner which we will have on November 2nd and um please to say that Andre will be inducted into the East Side Hall of Fame on that evening so a little bit about Gear Up um that's what it stands for gaining early awareness and Readiness for undergraduate programs bottom line what that means is we want to get students to be College and Career ready by the time they graduate from high school uh it involves Alam Rock and Franklin McKinley it involves only eighth grade students

so these kids are very lucky um it will the grant will follow them all through High School so we're already beginning to have conversations with the high school in terms of the best way to be able to support these students the long-term goals is we want them to graduate um ready for college and career and what that means is they're going to would have completed the adg requirements that cours workk so they at least have options it doesn't mean they have to go to college it just means that if they want to they've met the minimum requirements so that they can the short-term goals we want every eighth grader by the end of this year to learn about college and to know about the spanesi promise 100% all of them will know about it we

want them to learn about different careers interests and options so that um they're going to be aware of different opportunities for them I remember my own upbringing and I grew up in San Francisco B hun Sports similar to East Side I don't know anything about any kind of career options other than working in the shipyards you know what what was available then so we want to expand their Horizons so that they're aware of um different careers that are there and this one is very important we want them to complete algebra excuse me we wanted to complete grade8 ready to take algebra you may know that Eide is switched from math one back to algebra so next year they will need to pass ninth grade algebra it is the critical Gateway course and um we can

talk to what blue in her face about college opportunities that course is critical they're going to have to meet the adg requirements of three years of math hopefully four and it starts with completing ninth grade algebra how are we going to do this well first comes inspiration so we already are planning events we just held our first event at the tech for Franklin McKinley and we have Alam Rock planned for October 17th you're invited I hope to see you there it is a terrific opportunity um we already have by the way more students in roll and Lam rock that we did from Franklin McKinley so I'm pleased about that um we have six buses and I want to thank by the way uh Ana where's Anya who's uh been very helpful to us I'll talk

a little bit more about our our site um coordinators who's been our contact person as has been Sandra um I started to meet them before I started working here with sander with Tara And with Anya and it was a pleasure to work with them um in this capacity before I even started here um the tech is enti is intended to um Inspire the students they're going to have the tech all to themselves for three hours we're going to have tabling events there where they can go to different tables learn about different careers um just to get them thinking not to have them say oh this is what I want to be but just to realize there's a lot of different occupations the high schools are there talking about high school talking about a tog our

Spartan ambassadors are there talking about their experience as uh students in East Side um and what they're doing now at San State it's a terrific terrific opportunity um they're fed and um it's uh it went really well and we think alrock event is going to be even better on October 17th we also want them to be engaged in Exploration so this we're just developing a toolkit right now that we'd like to implement in class um about 20 minutes a week and hopefully in math specifically we want to inspire them um to really really take advantage of what I'm about to say next which is our uh academics but the exploration will be in class work well they'll learn about the adg requirements they'll explore their interests um just opportunities for them to just be aware

of the college path um what colleges just start get them to thinking about it now this next part is really important we've contracted out with um barrier tutoring and the Silicon Val Education Foundation to provide tutoring and extended time instruction in homework and in math um we're just kicking it off right now we only had I think last count 17 students taking advantage of this um I talked to Sandra about getting to the principls and K I like to go out talk to the classes let them know the tutoring and act an extended time it's not punishment it's to get them ready for next year they've got to be ready to take that course on next year and um it's so it's the biggest chall so everything we're doing Center centers around them getting ready

for this academics and this help is there for them the the tutoring is online it they can access it during different times in the evening and extended time is going to be after school weekends during periods to um review and um prepare them for math one of the components will be dealing with um the vocabulary math if you're familiar with Kon core very language intensive a lot of students struggle just over the language on that and then the uh last one is the site coordinators and uh we had this evening um I had Romana pause here but she had to leave she couldn't wait and she is a graduate student um from uh Sant State we have um four site coordinators who work with Sandra Sandra's kind of been there kind of overall coordinator and

um we also recently hired nine additional site advisers and they're going to be going into classroom talking to students they're there are different events um we we are planning in April the um stem po at San state where we're going to take them there in partnership with synopsis um they'll go to San Jose State they'll be exposed to various stem areas this will be done uh in the spring we're also planning a field trip to um if we can get in um at the U Levi Stadium so that's another item that we're planning to try to get some kids motivated but we wanted to get motivated take advantage of those academics the site coordinators will be at the school to um interact with the students compliment what you just heard with what um ana is

already already doing and we're very excited of this um with this program and happy to be part of partnership with San State and uh Alam Rock School District I want to also acknowledge Dr Dolores mana and Dr Lori cesy who who are the two professors at San State who wrote the Grant and we have been um partners with them the Eide Education Foundation to implement um the components of the Grant and I believe that's it I'll take any questions if you have any question for Mr Manny s okay I say Manny thank you so much for you know it's I this is a great resource for our kids so I'm very thrilled that you more more our kids are enrolling in it than Franklin mle now no no punish just being shown publicly but uh

but uh I certainly hope that our kids have a great time at the tech on the 17th and take advantage of this great opportunity given to given to them uh you know with your uh work and the work of uh District staff and uh congratulate my colleague trusty quo on getting into the east side all yes so good thank you thank Youk you pleas thank you uh thank you Manny and um I'm really excited to hear that every eighth grader is going to have an opportunity every grade um thank you for the Partnerships the funding to get this all done um and I look forward to it growing and getting you know to the younger students where we could get to them by third grade and so we have to do less and less remedial

work um but this is a great great start um for I will say this about the Sparty C prom speaking of which is um we recently met with the President of University she's um fully on board with the Spartan eai promise and actually wants to start expanding it the information get out to the Elementary grade so it starts early on to your point yeah and congratulations Andres and to all the other Hall of Famers out there um and I look forward to continuing to collaborate and partner with you uh thank you for you know continuing to stick with us definitely thank you I I'll add my thanks I think this exactly what we need to do I know that we see the achievement we're at uh and U the language arts area we obviously we

need we need to do better but always math is always the the struggle and I can attest that I added to that to those figures that we get because of the struggles I always have with math um and so I'm extra appreciative of the efforts that you're undertaking to support our students here as we move along I would encourage just wishful think in the future um that uh we rope in uh Sal Evergreen to go ahead and support these efforts to prepare students uh in in terms of math I over the course of the summer I had the opportunity to work with students that were uh seventh graders going into eighth grade as part of a duel and Roman program it was it was great program was quite frightening to deal with such young students

but uh it was actually very rewarding yeah and so maybe that would be an effort there to continue to bolster and support their math preparation as they go from e8th grade into into um into I know in the early days the president of Evergreen was part of the superintendent Council for the East Side Alliance too so that's definitely a possibility yeah thank you um thank you Mr Manny for all the work that you do and and all of those at the East Side Education Foundation as well I know that you guys all do this out of the bottom of your hearts and um for the students here as well as friendl McKinley and for the students you're going to be doing a little bit more spread out but thank you for all the work that

you do and hopefully more of these kids take advantage of it and um we hope so yeah I think we'll we'll get that going yeah and I also want to acknowledge um danam moer is the superintendent of eign um he's the president of the board I'm the vice president and it's uh it's a labor of love for us so we're more than happy to do it yes we got to do something yeah well we're glad you're doing it here and nowcast um okay any more comments Mr no I just wanted to State for the record that we're not letting you go I'm not letting him go yet I know where he I know where he drinks his coffee the Starbucks you actually do thank thank you thank you very much thank you okay and thank

and it's it's been just a pleasure being out there I I'm trying to visit classes at every site and uh oftentimes just our conversation I'm I'm checking in with principles just check to see where they're at right there's there's a lot to process there's a lot going on with with the school closures and a little I'll get more into that but I do want to thank the sites the principles uh and everyone that I've uh had the opportunity to to meet and also the classes that I've visited I've uh seen some wonderful things uh checked into some you know visited some classes where some of the you know some of the actual tasks are pretty aligned to the standards I was actually checking in with uh trusty fam and I shared a couple of of

um observations for some of the uh classes that I visited in uh Sixth and eighth grade grade where students were on task they were actually citing textual evidence you know over a uh book that they were reading and I was like whoa this is awesome so we go to another class wow same thing and it was just like this is awesome um and so I did tell the principal that you wow that's very impressive and so uh I do want to um highlight the the schools that I visited and the principles because they've been so wonderful adante one I went uh that was the first one uh princi Victor uh wendin um adant to principal Jose Cortez uh aptitude principal suan him menz I was at her school last week Cel uh principal Alicia I

was there key I was there with you last week as well Sor Chavez learning center um and marivel is the one scheduling them so she's trying to keep them all within the area so I'm not traveling but it's it's been uh it's working out um uh Cesar Chavez uh Learning Center uh principal uh and um principal on special assignment Kristen burst uh bird I'm sorry and director Dr vietos raise your hand I see you out there thank you it was a pleasure meeting with you as well U with all of them of course and uh dorsa principal Kelsey white uh George or principal Jackie monano uh her energy wow um it's amazing uh we were I couldn't keep up with her and I walk fast have you guys right have you yeah it's not me

right I was like Wow and I'm like okay let's go to this class and it was just awesome um Lindale principal uh casturi Basu actually we were there a couple of times uh for and then I'll talk a little bit more about why I was there as well uh mcllin principal Pablo Fen was at his school as well uh Okala principal Sharon Brown shepher principal Jennifer dhy uh Renaissance Academy at Fisher those were the two I was at this morning principal Doug uh Klein Heights heints I hope I'm pronouncing her correctly and then Renaissance Academy at Matson this was this was a perfect setup with with denal finnon I get there and uh they're out at uh nutrition and guess what's happening at the same moment that I arrive and I I hear there's an

actual potluck I had chilakil Roos veres tinga like I I was just oh and toras um it was a sandwich Salvadoreno there was pastel Lees it was a feast and I was hungry I was thinking you know what lunch is at probably at one ah um uh trusty fam was there in the office I think it was at 4:30 or so 4:45 when marivel arrived with uh she goes hey you haven't had lunch I'm like yeah I have showed up with thearon I was like I I was it it was fun but um but no it's been a pleasure visiting the the school sites um I'm very impressed and and their attitude considering where we're at with everything very positive very just energized uh it's been a pleasure um I I also uh thank you

for congratulating the the the schools the two schools that I wanted to congratulate as well um some of you trusty fam uh Travis Karen you uh Kar um Karina you were there as well TR Kina uh we were there for the opening of the Burlington um and they actually donated $55,000 uh to uh to Lindale and uh so congratulations and what was so awesome was that um they also we were there at at the presentation of of the checks uh do staff was there uh President Chavez was there and so we had the big check right wasn't it wasn't it awesome just the emotion uh and it was a perfect setup for me because I had visited the School site the the the day before and so I actually walked into like six classes and

so kids were like who is this person and who is that person oh this is a superintendent and so they knew me already right so I show up the following day and we're presenting the check right and as we present the check uh President Chavez he presented the check they looked at the dollar amount the $5,000 and the the the expression on their face was like that's a million dollars and it was just awes right it was just beautiful to see just their reaction and and I I did see the video after and it was like some of them were saying $5,000 like this this is really going to take us somewhere you know and it's like we need more than that to keep our schools you know open but but just the energy they

were just it's just beautiful to see our our our beautiful students um you know and and and their excitement and and and this is why we do what we do so the other one is I also wanted to to uh to thank uh R actually congratulate Russo mck's faculty staff and also principal tenu uh Ki for um of course the the environmental justice uh League protecting what we love and I didn't know you had written that board policy trusty fam uh they you know they they are 2024 Golden Bell uh winner and so there is uh going to be a actual uh celebration in Anaheim so if you're interested in attending you know in attending it's going to take place uh on Thursday December 5th uh 2024 I know uh you know you may not

be able to make it but if you're interested in in going please let me know we can go ahead and and make the arrangements for you uh uh so that you can be there um so that that's very exciting uh and it'll take place in naham I did say that right yes okay thank you and just an update on the consolidation uh committee um last night was the sixth time that they've met uh I've at the beginning I was showing up only to to a couple just a few minutes just to give them their space and and um the last three I want to say the last three uh meetings that they've held have been a little bit more intense in that they they have been reviewing lots of data they're asking and they're asking

for resources right Sandra Teresa they're asking for budget it's it's it's just very impressive uh uh to watch them um you know just just engage in in analizing and breaking down um you know the data and then uh ident you know thinking of what criteria they're going to uh be looking at to consider uh you know which of the schools you know it makes more sense even though it's it's it's difficult and we don't want to close schools and so but they're asking questions that I I right we we thought like wow that's a great question okay then that's something we need to you know and and and the staff I want to thank you also for for you know they're taking notes they're going back they're like okay they asked for this data let's

get it ready for for the following meeting and so uh I know we're staying till what 10 but there I hope you're taking some time to take care of yourselves uh as well as a committee but uh it it's been it's been very impressive and they're asking some great questions and now they're narrowing down and and you know and and what what I'm very appreciative of and impressed with also is that they're they're being very uh unselfish in that they're not it's my school you know you can't go with this one or that one it's like no let's look at the data let's look at the criteria and it's all open and uh he left uh but Manny barbar is doing just a fantastic job in facilitating it so um it it's been very import

you know very impressive um just uh uh I do want to put something out there um that we do have a and this is a reminder um that we do have a school consolidation web page so um has all the minutes has information afq and so uh we are pushing that information out to to our communities via parents Square via email uh so please if you have any questions please make sure you log on for that the the other thing I want to say uh want to share is that next week on October uh 17th I am going to hold a um uh Town Hall it's an informational consolidation it's a consolidation of school's informational town hall meeting uh it'll be in person and then the week after that and this will take place I'm

sorry at Russell mckeny on the 17th from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. and then the week after um uh next uh I'm going to hold a zoom just so that we can reach more uh of our communities to get more information out answer questions any questions they may have and for the zoom one I um Mr Manny Barbara is going to be there with me as well as uh uh Heather who is uh a Communications uh person that's working with us so just putting that out there so thank you very much and uh that that's my those are my updates um any trusty comments okayy thank you so much um I know the last time we met was prior to the back to school night so it was great to see uh trusty fam and the

community out there um on the 19th of September um it was great to be out there with our our community and uh before that also hanging out at the wom Festival um grateful for vanley and the organizing committee um I know mfam you helped out a lot so thank you for um supporting that effort and making sure that uh we were there and um but uh president uh Chavez too was good to be out there and hang out um at Andrew Hill um and before I go on I want to welcome uh Herman s our superintendent I think it's the first time you sit here right formally it's a first time yes formerly so welcome um to Alam Rock and I know you I mean you hit the ground running so it feels like you've

been here for you know so many and I'm like wait a second it's the first one so welcome um and you know we're glad that you're here um it was great to start off kind of pre you weren't even you hadn't even started when we did the Burlington opening so it was a day before you even started and you're already out there with us uh cutting red ribbons and stuff like that so that was fun um getting that $5,000 check and um having the the community out there also excited um and then that night uh some of us went to the Amigos of Guadalupe um event one of the partner that you know provides a lot of resources for our community our families so I'm glad they were able to celebrate and um a lot

of good things coming to our our East Side our elmrock community I'm excited to hear about all the things that um they're also bringing in um and on the 30th you know as an indigenous woman for me um especially sitting on the school board um it's important to acknowledge these days and so on September 30th it's the orange shirt day and it's a day that we acknowledge Truth and Reconciliation um of what our indigenous children went through in our schools um here in the United States of America and so and so remembering what happened so it never happens again and then you know uh moving forward with the truth knowing um so that we never go backwards and so um just acknowledging that and all the children that never made it back home um also

and those that did make it back home with a lot of trauma and still dealing with some of those things so you know just working as an indigenous woman also to heal part of that with my presence here I just think of my ancestors who just dreamed of being um you know at at this place um at this time so honoring that um and then this last Saturday I was able to go to Eastridge and celebrate with our community um the bational Health week and so starting really a month of taking the time to take care of ourselves right we talked about counseling which is amazing um but you know also that physical physical part of ourselves um and all the resources that are out there and just when we think like I have to

deal with this pain because I might not have insurance or whatever it is you don't you know there's services and resources and so as for support and um you know we can connect you um and so it was great to be out there with some of our leaders ERS this um past weekend and uh you know look forward to continuing to collaborate with the community um and thank you staff teachers all that you do day in day out um to continue to move our district forward thank you okay well lots of things you know uh you know being a trustey also means being a truste of everything because all the business lands on on the board ultimately so first of all welcome Mr Serta your first Ro you know this is your first Ro rodeo

and I want to say it's you've had an energetic week and a half and I did want to acknowledge you know you're like the the student who did the he the extra credit stuff on the first day of class right now get to that because you you you know you you did join us for the grand opening of uh you know B the Burlington Coat Factory and their awarding of uh Lindale uh the $5,000 donation and I want to say you know I went to Lindale and uh you know to congratulate them on on on such a well-deserved recognition and also in recognition of their um many years of ser you know the school's many years of service to this District you know historically it it was where this District served its uh special education

population and I remember as a young you know fifth grader that I first met death children and children with developmental disability they were all educated at Lindale for you know for the better part of 50 before uh before mainstreaming took effect so prior to that being standard practice if you know if a student could not be served with accommodations in a class in a standard classroom they would be assigned to Lindale so um huge huge congratulations to Lindale I want to con painter painter hit it off on stage at the Moon Festival uh and also to congratulate all our thank all our parents for coming to Baptist school night uh what is it a Student Success is a partnership between schools and families and we would not be here without their support and uh was

it a lot of congratulations uh let's see here uh Russo mckinty on winning uh the Golden Bell and I want to say I didn't you know I wasn't expecting uh you know that that one resolution to to lead to bigger you know I mean it was done in the hope that it would lead to bigger things and I'm glad it did and that was a huge partnership between uh you know with with help from uh Oak Ro trusty horo who who was leading you know the Santa Clara County School boards Association sort of environmental justice caucus right you know you know to find you know uh new avenues of uh bring Science Education into the schools in a sustainable Manner and I am uh very very glad that uh you know these efforts have helped

Russo mckinty do all this and I want to reflect all of this is you know a lot of the work uh I you know it's about leveraging Partnerships right this past spring uh you know um in partnership with uh Metro Ed and San Jose UniFi trusty uh Ryan Wheatley where we you know he and I you know thought you know Metro Ed needs the enrollment we need the programming and he he you know he and I and our you know Alam Rock staff and metroed staff we found a way to provide uh Career Technical education in in our spring great camp this year right and for the Moon Festival that was a three District collaboration between Alam Rock Franklin McKinley and the East Side Union High School District to provide you know the the large

you know the biggest entertainment block of the night uh at the Moon Festival right and it's it's about leveraging Partnerships with other districts and uh levels of government to bring more services to the district and also to uh public you know to show our community what Alam Rock can offer for our kids uh had a great time visiting schools continuing on my annual tour of alen rock uh so on the 20 of September uh I visited adante 1 uh um dual imersion Academy Ryan Elementary Okala middle uh great things happening uh you know uh great use of the uh Verizon learning lab when for President Chavez and I went to okola and we took some very very uh pointed questions from the8th graders especially as it uh came to you know they they asked some

great questions like why do we not have a a true gym or you know why is it that that the water fountains need fixed and those are questions that you know uh it's our job to answer and I'm very proud of the fact that our kids are asking those kinds of questions right uh you know uh Ryan's doing some nice things with indoor gardening uh afterward you know after that day uh you know uh represented the district along with trusty quento at the Builder barbecue uh always want to re recognize the longstanding relationship we have with the Building Trades Council be you know many of our families are uh building skill you know union members of skill trades and the skilled trades uh you know help keep lights on uh the roof uh from leaking

and basically make sure that that we we do have adequate facilities so I all you know always a pleasure to recognize uh you know the the longstanding relationship our district has with the Building Trades Council um and then after that Lucha San Antonio and Renaissance at Matson on the 27th so uh got to show Mr Barbara you know on his last day some some of our our schools and you know we got to see the maker space as well as uh uh you know uh at San Antonio uh and also uh got to see picture picture day at at Renaissance at Matson so uh lot you know lots of good things going on in our schools uh I want to congratulate Okala middle for being County CrossCountry Champions this year so this is their their

best season best season on on on the track and so I want to congratulate them on on that achievement uh I want to uh also thank Linda Vista Elementary for having inviting me to their Carnival also on the 27th I always you know it's a great great way to connect with our parents and also uh to do you know I spent money I had my hot dogs I had my nachos and you know I always encourage my colleagues uh you know were invited to you know to help always help pitch in with our schools fundraising efforts uh you know other than that tomorrow I look forward to visiting Lindale attitude at GS and the Cesar Chavez Early Learning Center uh you know on that note aside from the good news you know I do want

to acknowledge as has already been said that uh you know there's a lot of uncertainty with uh School consolidation and you know honestly you know it it breaks my heart uh you it's you know these are some of these are schools that I grew up hearing about and no people having attended these schools some of the brightest people I know also came out of these schools so uh you know as I've always stated my principles have been to was it preserve as many programs as possible uh was it to be careful and precise with consolidations and also to you know where we can save as save as many teachers and staff as possible and I hope that you know we could you know we can do it in uh how you say the most con

considerate way possible you know in in in recognition of all the service that have been provided to our children and our families over the course of many years so you know on on that note I will uh conclude my remarks thank you yes um want to thank uh uh superint s who prior to even taking office was already uh very involved uh and um came to the Builder's barbecue uh and was able to uh make some introductions there with some key leaders uh in the in the labor movement additionally with some of our not sure if you had interacted with some of our state legislator legislators that were there it was a good opportunity to engage with some of the folks that we'll be talking to we need support um and so thank you for

making it out to that uh excellent event that I I agree uh it's important to uh continue to maintain in F relationships with our uh Labor uh allies that are uh helping us um as we rebuild our district and we we um construct where where where our children are going to go to school um and so excellent event uh I was invited um to the laa Round Table in a community organization uh that gathers together a lot of a lot of people from the Theo community and uh with was able to along with uh interim superintendent uh Manny Barbara uh present on what's going on with Alan Rock U inter superintendent Barbara provided more of the details I kind of gave a broad overview um but uh as was expected people were concerned they shared

their concerns um you can sense a little bit of irritation uh because elmrock happens to be a historic district where many of them have gone to school or they uh know people when to school and so um it was a little tense at first but afterwards I got the I it was very uh heartwarming to see that there was a desire to be involved to support to help and so um you know I I knew full well that uh it was not going to be U you know you know very you know happy session but uh nevertheless it was very it was great to see that uh everybody there uh it seemed as if they wanted to lend help they wanted to be helpful and supportive of alrock during these difficult times and so um

I me I'm hardened by that and I expect that to be the case I have been asked by members of the community uh why is it that you're not involved in the committee well said it's designed that way so that the board is not engaged and that we're not pre um there's no sort of like this is the way it's going to be and so it took them a while to get it but they ultimately got it oh okay the the committee is putting a lot of work we want to give them the full Independence that they rightfully deserve uh to come up with their recommendations without having any sort of undue influence by the board it's a g to be able to make an ultimate decision at the end uh so I just wanted

to make sure to uh reiterate that since uh a couple of folks actually brought it up and and they were a little confused as to why the board's not involved um and so um that's why I'm bringing it up here for folks who might be viewing us on uh through our our social media channels um in addition to that I want to it's uh October 12th is around the corner many people know October 12th as Columbus Day uh for those of us who uh celebrate it for other reasons it's known as zasa uh and um there has been efforts to undermine that to help uh clean away and erase the fact that we are a mixture of two uh two races two different cultures and um I'm very glad to see that there are organizations

out there continuing to Foster and to acknowledge that there is a unique group of people that happens not to be from Europe or be solely indigenous that we happen to be a mixture of two cultures and so on October 16th the Latino leadership Alliance will be celebrating um uh deasa at Miss Skyler restaurant if you're around amazing great Cuisine and um join us as we uh celebrate this um it's it's it's very disheartening to see that there's a movement to go out there so no no this is mesy sake and then vasconcelos a weirdo and he had whatever he's not going to take over an entire massive group of people that populate the Western Hemisphere who happen to be the product of the merging of these two cultures however it may have happened we are

here and I'm very proud of that and uh grateful to those of us who continue to acknowledge this and supportive of our efforts on on October 12th so please join us at 5:30 on October 16th at mcal uh where we will be enjoying some amazing wakan Cuisine uh come and have some uh some chapinas out there if you're interested okay I guess my turn uh I'm glad to see um superintendent Sera you know jumping not like jumping and but jumping and running and everything else to to get up to speed here and I'm glad that he's enjoying the morgage Borg or the Latino Food Heaven here east side of San Jose and that's another one the WR down my list and um I want to thank all the people on the school closure committee for

all their work and and that they're doing and for every all the stakeholders and their patients through all this process um it's it's best as uh inter um Manny said that we that we stay away from them but that we will be looking at everything that that they provide and um and I just want to thank all the parents and for sticking with us through all of this and this is an opportunity for Alan Rock to reset itself and and some might look at it like oh no they're going to close my school but what they don't realize is how much better the learning will be for the students when we can supply everything that is needed in the classrooms and meet all the needs of the children their learning needs as well um I

just look forward to seeing that someday it'll take a couple years but um I want to see it as soon as possible um and I also want to thank men for doing all he does with the students every single time he has a chance to donate something even if it's buying hot dogs he's there to help so I I think that's great um and just and by pres GTO you do a lot of work on this board as well and you're out there in the community and U congratulations again on that and it was very well deserved and Justa you also are always out there in the community and trying to make things better for the children here in alumrock and I never really realized how much time and effort um all of us have

been putting in um my calender every day says Alan Rock you're going here Alan Rock you're going there and I just say hi Frank bye Frank hi Frank that's my husband and then he just says I don't even see you anymore you're always politicking so um thank you to him for his patience as well and uh I guess it was yesterday we got to go to um Frank KY was it yesterday all these days and um that was very exciting to see the commemoration of the launching of the ignite uh launch event and that was with Lorena Chavez who wrote the Grant and um she also got me to get in there and sign for the gr but um hopefully it'll be coming soon and in all of her efforts for Teach for America and

we have a lot of teachers from Teach for America here in alrock and I want to tell you that uh that's an excellent program and um they're doing really good work and hopefully we can um I we can have them here um tutoring the children as soon as possible too and I was looking at the site when I first seen um the superintendent Serta he goes behind me and I could feel somebody walking up on me right so he didn't startle me but he says whatat are you doing I says look at these schools I said our schools this is what we're going to have in the future because we're going to be able to provide what we you know what we see here and better so um I look forward to that and I
