005um and uh listen and work together let it's kind of um listen to the community's concerns and we could work together to figure out a better outcome uh to that's going to impact our our community um so I just wanted to kind of thank you for uh listening uh and hopefully uh we can work together and and find the best outcome uh for our students and for our community thank Youk hi good evening my name is Christine viel um I'm also a parent from adalante um I'm actually wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all um I want want to be the first to recognize that uh we kind of probably started off a little bumpy in this process and I'm hoping that there can be a little bit of restarting and renewed um
006energy towards working together um I make that commitment on behalf of myself I know the U many parents that are in this room also have that same Spirit um the first meeting that that we kind of got a off on the wrong foot um I think took us by surprise although there had been things leading up to it so I just want to recognize that and say to you that we appreciate where we are in creating the committee we're here to support the proposal uh with with the committee that is representative that has the timeline that was presented at the last meeting um and really to genuinely work together I also just want to note for the record that there was another NBC article that came out yesterday we did not know that was coming
007out I think they recycled old news that said that there was an Battle of parents that were upset and it actually upset us because we felt like we had gotten to a place where we were trying to uh you know work together collaboratively and figure out how to do it together and we didn't want that to send the wrong message to you all uh and that that uh there was a quick phone call to NBC saying that's really not accurate anymore uh we're able to come to a place where hopefully there is a committee that's going to represent so wanted to thank you let you know that we're here I know we have a lot of work ahead of us in the next couple months but we're here to make Solutions and to come up
008and help with ideas thank you good evening my name is Gonzalez I am a proud parent of two students in um umra school district and also Community member organizer um first of all I just want to say I wasn't able to come to our last meeting but I want to say that when I saw that we stand at the Timeline I really appreciate that I really appreciate F Listen to Understanding that now we can hopefully have a true parent engagement and Community engagement within all this process especially now that that the students are back in school and parents are here um I also want to acknowledge and and ask that as we think about this committee we also think about the partners that we're working with right we have Family Resource Centers that are key
009players in uh informing community in keeping engaged Community especially our parents and our students so how can we be part of that as well and solutions real tangible Solutions because consolidation is just part of it but how can we also um as we creating this committee as we bringing Partners as we bringing um parents and a staff how we also think about bringing more Revenue how we think about increasing our student attendance and bringing more students into our Al School District they shouldn't only be a a committee to say this is how we're going to consolidate schools or close schools or move schools but this should be also about finding real permanent Solutions es that will bring more students and more income and more Revenue to our to our district thank you good afternoon my
010name is Claudia quo I am a parent of a special uh ed student uh with autism um alark has an amazing autism program it is something we should all be proud of and when we when we speak about partners and and whom it is that is part of these committees you know I would definitely um want for all of you guys to keep in mind that we do have our special ed Department very present not only like the department itself but the parents um especially when we're thinking about um consolidating or whether we say consolidating or closures whichever it is you know it will deeply affect our department especially knowing you know how our summer school program runs it's very specific it's structured and you know all those little details within our students do matter
011um even Dee rooted right like there is like a higher consequence of change like that with our going to advocate for them today e we are going to Champions whether it be in the classroom on the field of play uh if it's in the community we need to have that that mentality and that is what the community wants us to do we want our kids success I've heard that out of uh out of the president before let's get it let's become those Champion Builders of these kids for the whole community so that they can go out and help all the rest of the community thank you very much and uh got go to High thank [Music] you you know person personally I've been involved with the school for 15 years Frisco proud of a daughter
012who's attending a University at San Francisco school I have another daughter who's attending the last year of high school and a child another child who's attending sixth grade as a Latino it's very important for me to it's important to find the reason why our children are leaving the schools it's it's important to create a relationship in order for the children to motivate the children to stay we need to find the reason of what's going on the things going on because can find a solution currently but we need to find the reason why motivate children so they can stay in the district I think I believe that together we can do this personally 15 years that my children have been in the elro school district and I would be very saddened to see the closure of
013many schools I believe we can do something to save many schools we can do it together thank you good afternoon uh when Sanchez I'm gonna speak a little bit English a little bit Spanish um I'm a product of the alrock school district it's unfortunate that some people have made decisions for our district that has caused hardship to our children in our education it's important for all the parents to be involved you guys are seeing that it it's important to them and their kids education so um on be you know I I have two kids that go Delante I wasn't very happy when I heard about the merger of the schools and closing certain uh grades to different you know to different schools we can come to an agreement if the community is involved thank you

015copied at Evergreen o grve and um you know I just want to reiterate to everyone also that you know this is not just an alen Rock be many districts are closing schools you know across across the County it's not just alen Rock's going to hit us hard right because that's is what our district it's finally coming to us and we do need to close and merge schools it's not just an Eastside thing it's going across the county so yes you can see we want to be part of it we want to be part of the conversation we want to be part of you know whoever gets chosen on the committee and we want it done in a timely fashion open to everyone you know to to attend these meetings have it be an open Forum
016not um you know structured as far as such as uh the board meetings and also we have a facil facilitator who is um open who is not tied to any organization or any committee or anybody really an outside facilitator who has no objective and is very uh neutral so that way they don't guide the committee one way or the other we need a very neutral facilitator uh for this committee thank you yeah forgive me my name is Steve Navaro I'm a parent of a child at ente 1 but I'm also here as a member representative of community leadership so I'm actually a member of the D7 leadership group that's for district 7 which the alar Union School District is a part of um what I wanted mention to the to the executive board um is
017that it isn't um it's important and a priority that our voices as parents and the children are are um you know are part of this you know for whatever it is that you're looking to do but it's also the larger Community we're paying attention we are impacted by what happens to the school district and by by the children that you guys educate and everything that happens um and we also have resources to help or support what you do you know we're keenly interested in participating and supporting um hopefully the you know a good transparent process and engaged process that helps you know serve the best interests of our of our children in the education their education I just wanted to my my name is maida I'm a parent proud parent of AD 2 uh first

020it says School consolidation committee um that where it says parent from each school that that should be a resident of Al Bron fact of the matter is that these decisions that are going to be made will impact the people who live here we have guests in alen rock uh but uh the people who are residents of alen rock will live with the consequences of this decision for generations to come and so it's for that reason and that I'm asking that I asked at the last meeting and I'm asking again that that be included in the uh School consolidation committee uh under the suggested composition for the parents uh to ensure that those folks are parents but they are also residents of alrock okay the maker of the motion are you willing to amend sure just
021making sure that it's on the application so that um it parent that that's not yeah so let me let me just get a little context for people who might not have heard the entire presentation so um the committee that's being suggested and um as I mentioned the last last meeting same process I Ed when I had to close schools 20 years ago and it's um it's going to be a large committee because of the number of people involved as I went through this in terms of just the initial draft we're looking at about 31 people which is huge and it's going to be very complicated uh process a representative from each school and then some neighborhood representation um from the community I know somebody had mentioned that that make sure that we have that in
022place um I have no problem if it's someone that's has to be there at the school the main component for me my main interest it has to be someone that a can attend all the meetings and um we're looking at as many potentially as8 to nine meetings and two is um it's going to be a hard process it has to be someone that has to be willing to um hear all the information and has to be willing to when the time comes can't back off and say well I'm stepping out um because it at the end the recommendation has to be representative of the committee and someone that ought to have been involved in the school so my main interest would be that someone that would perhaps been involved in some kind of Suite Council
023PTA some active involvement not just someone that comes off the street so that would be the main interest that I would have the the point that I want to get at is is that if those who are not employees that those folks be residents of alen Rock School District that they live with emplo yeah the man there would be management team obviously just in case people don't know this the management team would be representing all the associations would be represented and the um um executive team will be resources not voting members so but I just want to make sure that we're clear that the parents what you're saying yeah and that they will be they live within the boundaries of rock okay so the only thing I want to make sure is that we don't
024end up without a parent somewhere because that was the only applicant and then they don't live there they will be a parent from every school I think I think if we don't have a parent from every school we're GNA have to persuade yeah someone to be part of the committee because it's too at the end of look this is going to be really difficult right as I mentioned last time um this has never even been attempted with this many schools but it is an opportunity and this I want to say the gentleman who mentioned if I may comment the gentleman who mentioned about giving the students a reason to stay and I think this is a real opportunity for the district to reimagine our district to reimagine itself again um it' be as I mentioned
025last it' be a leaner district with an opportunity to provide more resources to do exactly what that gentleman was saying as we are right now our programs are in Jeopardy and I want to emphasize again this is not a matter of saying don't close schools no one wants none of you want to close schools I don't want to close schools no one here wants to close schools but the alternative is um not only being taken over but the ISE a worst alternative that I didn't mention last I'm going to mention it this evening and that is for elmrock to cease to exist because it is entirely possible that if a u a district fails to meet these obligations that the recommendation may be that the district be absorbed by another District this is very serious
026and people need to understand that so um but this is also an opportunity to do exactly what that gentleman mentioned to reimagine the district to come out of it with a vision of what this District can be with resources that can be applied to for the benefit of the students so I just want to emphasize that thank you um do you also second the motion she already amended her motion are you willing to still second yes I support um that our our goal is to have each parent be residents of alrock okay thank you so we have a first and a second um any trustee comment kinaa first of all I want to thank um everybody that came out today um and you know since when we first started hearing about this you know the
027voice of our parents our community our teachers our staff um as a trustee for me it's important to represent not just my own beliefs and the things that I think should be happening but also taking the time to listen to our community so thank you you know I think of the times we were here early on the Saturday morning and you know just um all of that will take a lot of coordinating and a lot to be here I was once you know a parent sitting there and so thank you um and I just also want to say welcome back you know although it's um it's an interesting year this year right so many changes and the tone um I just want to welcome all the students back and I want to thank um our
028interim superintendent and our staff for uh doing a great job in opening our schools you know it's always good to see and hear our um you know parents um happy happy to see our superintendent our staff to return I love seeing all the pictures first day back um so I have hope you know for this process as I mentioned last time you know it's an answer to a prayer something that I've been trying to say but I'm glad you know you were able to bring a plan in place that uh we'll be able to follow and um that I think we all feel good about and um you know it would have been a couple of months I would have thought it would be unbelievable but I think I feel like a unanimous vote coming
029to think thank you any other trusty comment uh trusty Shelton thank you president um thank you uh Dr Barbara again um for bringing this forward um I am very supportive of this holistic approach the timeline um I just have a couple questions because it does say suggested composition and you just said 31 so um I so 21 from each school that includes um Caesar Chavez Early Learning includes all the schools if they have a 19p yeah I was there yesterday is if shavas is a school it's a school okay just checking um and then the four is it four employee associations because I also I have three and then the management three okay so management team means um what we would call a the administrators this administr right so that's one okay well but not
030one that would include um an elementary principal and a middle school principal and a district office so that's three I'm sorry elementary middle and district office okay district office okay that's not a member of the cabinet okay so because I see executive cabinet superintend not voting so three for management team and so three six 27 so then we're looking at about four Community groups is that I'm sorry if I'm doing the math four Community organizations right four okay I come out with 31 okay it's a lot all right and those are going to be at the discretion of the like where do those Community well I have um some recommendations that I will run run by board president okay all right thank you um I would suggest that when it comes down to time to
031facilitate that there are parameters to your point about attendance and for people who essential are meet like have not met or have you know if you're getting to the ninth meeting and somebody hasn't been there for three or four meetings then they forfeit their voting rights so something I don't want I don't want to be premature but if should you approve I want to move right away so what I'm looking at is the committee um if you approve the committee will be established by the end of the month we'll send out the application to the community um and then we'll um um what I'm looking at is the first meeting potential being September 18th and then with um decision coming to the board for you to make the decision in December so I will lay
032out those dates um and um as part of the application process so people will know those are dates that again what I was speaking to was the suggest question that you know people understand up front that if you're absent at a certain point in time then they lose their it's really important you're right it's just a suggestion for how it moves forward but thank you um any other trusty comment trusty minf fam you know this may be an answer to our prayers for the moment and so I'm hopeful that this this process will uh provide the necessary space for us to conduct an an orderly consolidation uh you know the only thing I would like to ask you know the interim superintendent you know is that uh hearing from the audience I I I you
033know strong would strongly hope that we have a an objective facilitator I think that uh this this process is definitely going to be contentious and who you know uh whoever has uh has the stamina to facilitate you know may may be asked to be kind of like a referee in you know in this uh you know what what you know vigorous vigorous uh debate process so you know I I I hope that uh you know Mr barbar you would be you know able to you know when when the time comes recommend an objective facilitator to uh for the board's uh consideration uh vice president K I want to thank the uh superintendent barbero uh thank you for the uh for the plan that was developed birth pressure to be able to see uh an issue
034and that you were able to immediately step in and uh uh work to address it come up with a solution that is a win-win for everyone um I U appreciative of everybody who came out and spoke uh both now and the past I think I mentioned it before even somebody mentioned it was contentious I think that's it's part of the process it's part of democracy um and uh it's a good thing to have folks to be out and engaged it's sad when nobody comes to the meetings and nobody participates um and so I know it's a difficult topic that we're dealing with uh I joined this board and I pledged that I would not shut down any schools I attempted to hold off as much as I could but the reality has it it's it
035it has to sink in that um we cannot sustain the number of sites that we have with the number of students that we have um and so it's for that reason that I ultimately came on board and uh chose to support this um this decision um I earlier today the news uh the news um was mentioned and aside from the Recycled stuff I was very pleased to hear the comments and the trust that the parents have in Alam Rock uh we even had a parent State publicly that they had gone to two private schools and they were leaving those private schools because they wanted to come back to alrock I think that Alam Rock's best days are ahead of us these are very tough times and very very difficult decisions that we have to face
036but uh even in this crisis there's opportunity to go ahead rise the district and uh dedicate those resources to our kids and so um yeah it's it's a it's a difficult time but I'm going to be supportive of this along with the the amendment that was made I think it's a um a good plan and I'm appreciate it thank you superintendent um thank you everybody for being here and for your comments and um from the get-go when I got on the board uh five and a half years ago I I seen that we to close school so to me this is a great opportunity to reset alrock if we don't do it the state will come in and take it and do it for us so um I'm sure nobody wants that and at the
037same time um you have to remember if it's not sustainable then we going to have to start cutting out Key Programs and we don't want that we want the best education for the kids for all the kids in every single school if that means I just want to say one thing you guys are all the schools whether it's in these four walls and another four walls you guys make up this school and hopefully you're willing to um work with everybody and and listen and you'll be provided the opportunity to uh make your comments and just remember that we all have your children's education in mind and we're all trying to do the best we can under the C cumstances that we have do they fund education the way they should no but we still have
038to work with what we have and we have to work with what we don't have so this is why we are here now and um thank you for all your patience um through all of this and believe it or not I strongly believe that Alan mock is going to be able to offer better quality programs um during school and after school there's a lot of things that we could be doing to make the education better we'll be able to do that with more money and I know nobody wants to hear about money but it's the lack of that has gotten us to this point but we'll be in a better position thank you all for your understanding um so now I'm going to take the vote um all in favor raise your hand so it's

042this District went to the schools is going to be um leaving us to go to another District uh I remember been here that long but I've been here long enough to know there's going to be a big loss this is a good good person and uh you will be missed I don't know if you want to say anything go I don't cut you by [Laughter] surprise just thank you for those kind those kind comments and word um you know it's been a it's been a privilege and an honor to serve um this district and this community so um I want to thank um the board um all my colleagues um who have supported me um but I will miss this place dearly thank you we wish you the best I guess we could say where
