Special Board Meeting

001uh a month or so is is sort of like the standard time frame that you know between the approval of the RFP and the drafting you know and you know drafting of the contract representation to the board you know is it safe to say that usually we would a board would expect uh you know a month out after approval of the RFP for a contract to be presented I'm sorry what was that question I is it nor is it is it the is it is is it the normal is a month a normal time frame uh for a contract to be presented to the board after of after the approval of the RFP yes that seems to be a reasonable time frame um you know as um the contract was approved on May 9 our

002understanding was that it was going to be at the next board meeting or regular board meeting that's kind of where we're working from all right thank you Mr Chang for the clarifications thank you trust Chavis uh so this is what I heard from the other board members okay um first U president Corina said that it is important that I'm glad you said that it's best that they start as soon as possible and so I hear Mr G say that um there was sufficient am amount of time we've given a certain time frame and uh Mr fam also says that he's in agreement that uh that we should move ahead but let me tell you my point of view my point of view is we gave a certain timeline it was in March where we at

003in March 14th that we now needed a superintendent and we're now in June to me it's kind of moving kind of slow so as far as uh the search went we had one that was good to go and I thought that we should have made a decision in the last meeting so I am all for moving ahead because we we should do this as as soon as possible as you said Thank you thank you any other comments or questions the only thing I'll add is um you know again I'm in agreement we get to move forward we have the contract um I do plan to support it uh however I think we're on agreement that it should have happened sooner um being that you know we call this meeting from yesterday to today was the

004only part that I was uh concerned about and to see if I was missing anything um we could have called a special board meeting weeks ago and given our families um enough time to prepare to be here so that's just that was just my thoughts um and so at this point I'll go ahead and bring it to a vote all those in favor of passing this contract please do so by raising your hand all right so I'll uh trusty fam myself vice president Kinto and uh trustee Chavez um approved I know uh Andrea is um not here moving on to item 202 motion to amend amend board bylaw 9100 organization to allow for the midterm nomination and elections of board officers uh motion by Linda second by trustee fam um I'm going to go ahead

005and open this item up for public comment um first and then trusty Chavez sorry thank you uh and then I'll bring it back to the board um any members of the public wishing to address the board on this item welcome hi everyone my name my name is Veronica M I'm parent here at Alan Rock School District and I [Music] am I am disappointed I am very disappointed have three children and we're not going back we're not what you're doing right now is skimming it is really skimming and it's skimming Community it's skimming children right and you know it and you definitely know it and you know what we're going back to the three we're not you know what happened to the three and we're here again and and this is not okay whatever intent you

006have whatever skinning you have in the back because it can't be out of um B Brown act violation have the guts to come out you're here because of community you're here because of our children they are first you're not here for your political gains you're not and I'm glad you're looking at me in the eye and I hope you continue to but this this that you did today if I wasn't aware you don't even know what I to do to come over here I just got here and what I have to do to come to every board meeting with my children but doesn't seem to be caring either you know how many doors I knocked for my community and they couldn't come because it was so last minute but sure they want to be here

007and I will continue knocking and I will continue spreading whatever this is happening to make sure that they know and that this stops this is not okay I am angry I am frustrated and this a pointment in the leadership remember the threea TR and the lus and right now we have three that seem to be doing that thank you thank you my name is gonalez I am a parent of two children here in Al Brock School District I am a Community member and I am here solely as a parent in 2019 more than 400 students and families walked out to demand transparency and to demand accountability from the board years later 2024 we continue or we going back you trying to go back to that same scheming of doing last minute meetings or trying to

008change policies and trying to change things when parents are not here when parents cannot attend because of the last minute things and because these agendas not every single parent receives them in their backpacks in their schools and because we're in vacations kids are already out parents do not know what is happening and this is intentional why because the less parents are here the more the more uncountable you guys going to be to us but then you forget you have leaders and community members that care enough for all of our children to show up again and again not only to be here and give our voice but to go outside and educate our families on what you all doing we're not going back to that tree we're not going to allow to go back to that

009tree and if we have to door not door or not and we have to go and do educational forums and we have to go back and do rallies and marches we will because we cannot go back parents need to be present parents need to be engaged there was a district known for the community engagement knowing for how you work with us in this decisions how we were able to be present in these meetings bring what we used to be an engagement Al School District where parents voice and youth voice and our student voice matter thank you good evening my name is Olivia Ortiz first of all take off the timer away from my face I did a lot to be here today I have to things to do with my with my son so I

010think I deserve the time for you guys to listen to what I have to say because like the other times I had to do a lot my name is Olivia orti I enjoyed the district family 12 years ago and since then we did a we have done a lot of work most of you have been witness of what we have done here a lot of work we have to do we have to do a lot of sacrifices to make sure that the district runs the way that it's supposed to be run I heard you guys talking about timelines I heard you guys talking about Community engagement well you know what sometimes you need to see what the best for the community if the timeline is not enough make sure that engagement of the community it's

011there before anything before any timeline make sure the community engagement it's there and make sure that we the parents have the time and have the um the ability to be here I'm the lucky one of the parents that could be able to make it today but there's a lot of parents out there that want they wish could be here they cannot be here because they just found out this morning when I have to reach out because I have to reach pars because I think this so important the lastek we had about you know the uh superintendent there was a lot of community members that wanted to be engaged of this process they want to be part of this process you guys remember that there was a lot of families there was a lot of parents

012that they want to be engaged in this process uh hiring the permanent superintendent there not we're not starting good I'm very disappointed this is a bad start you cannot do a meeting just to dayin 24 hours that's un noral let's learn let's show what happened please you can't guys cannot do this and also I have a question about 20 or2 thank you you guys want to do that nomination thank you you can come back I I want to know why time I want to know why because back not December oliv I hope you guys can find out thank you thank you good evening trustees uh my name is hero laa um I'm really prepared myself to to speak this evening one of the main reasons is because of the lack of notification in regards to

013this meeting I live here on the east side uh our daughter sitali began attending school um at adante 2 I I guess it was probably about 10 years ago and um we were extremely dismayed at the way the district was conducting business on behalf of our child and the children that were attending that school it was then that we realized it was important to have a voice as parents it was at that point that we realized that not only is it Our obligation to hold this institution accountable but it's also important to be a part of the process since then years have passed and we saw more mismanagement in this District as was referenced by those that were known as the elmrock 3 I was proud of our East Side Community I was was proud

014to see our community come together and demand what's right on behalf of our children I'm proud of to say that things have changed things have changed significantly I'm proud of some of the work that's been done here by this board but what's happening as of recent is unacceptable it's unethical and it's not right dismissing our superintendent in the way that she was dismissed after 10 years of service to this District was not right more of these last minute meetings being called is not right you all what you're doing you will be held accountable please consider why it is that you're here it's for our children thank you okay uh members of the board any questions or comments trusty fam H thank you uh M president I you know I I want to acknowledge the anger

015in this room I want to acknowledge that yes there is Disappointment in this room also uh I I'm going to speak for myself as one member of this board I did not call this meeting uh however uh I will say you know that for my part uh I have a severe disagree severe disagreement of policy with the board president Herrera Lera uh at the May 21st meeting uh you know this board a board majority passed a uh budget Savings Plan uh that could potentially close up to nine schools in this District I deeply disagree with that budget consolidation I think that there was probably there is still uh and again uh which will be discussed at the January I mean in the June 13 board meeting uh the upcoming budget for this District in the

016next fiscal year but I do want to reiterate that I believe in a smaller consolidation I believe in Saving as many of this district schools to the extent possible so that we do have a schools in each quadrant we continue to maintain a level of ser Educational Service for our kids to keep our commitments to our teachers and our classified staff uh and so uh I just can't for the life of me you know support a board president who's willing to recklessly close nine of our schools I did not call this meeting but uh once in you know under under the educational code one of the checks on the board president is the ability for a board majority to vote out a board president if the situation calls for it and uh you know as

017far as I'm concerned this is I'm registering my vote of no confidence in uh the president the current president of the board as well as it looks like you know I'll save it for you know for another officer of this board and I will you know uh or I should say um the clerk of the board as well so again it's for these deep policy disagreements that I am casting my vote of no confidence I think that uh at the end of the day it's the voters of this District that will determine uh you know whether uh they prefer a uh shutting down nine schools or shutting down a lesser amount of schools and I hope that uh the voters of this District choose to save as many schools as possible thank you thank you

018than you any other members of the board wishing to speak or ask any questions all right see none I'll go ahead and share uh my points um wow I I was kind of wondering why this uh this item was brought forward and why um if it was even me because I know all all three are um on the line here but I guess my question was answered um and it really saddens me that uh we as board members don't have the opportunity to voice our thoughts and opinions on our board without getting I don't know what the word is really right now reprimanded I mean it's just really sad that um over 18,000 people elected me in our community to represent our community to ensure that our district moves forward in a way that is

019governed with ethical and um ensuring that we don't go bankrupt ensuring that uh people have jobs ensuring that children have schools to go to um and that governing in an ethical way is considered Reckless governing by some of my peers that really saddens me um and that if we vote in a way that our peers don't agree with that they will take us off our officer seat and also just to clarify because I was elected here by over 18,000 people of my community to serve them and to be transparent and honest this meeting was called by board vice president Andres kto trustee Linda Chavez and trustee minf so to hear him say twice that he did not call this meeting is again lack of transparency and I apologize if I sound upset because I am

020upset because I'm being sanctioned uh for conducting a meeting a special board meeting that we had on May 21st where I facilitated a very rich conversation allowed for every member or facilitated not allowed because I don't have that much power facilitated a conversation where I continued to ask any more comment or questions from my peers before we move on to the vote and there was no hand raised and there was no comments then but less than a month later they're taking me off of my board presidency role or wanting to because it still hasn't happened that is upsetting and the way it's being done because as uh you all know on the agenda we have a waiver of a second reading wow the second readings are placed to hold us accountable so we don't go

021and amend bylaws and change laws that govern our our way of governing this board that we are waving a second reading and we will discuss that later so public know that you'll have an opportunity to come and speak on that that we have the guts three of us majority have the guts to put on the agenda to to w a second reading the day before when families could not be here and we've heard that over and over that is concerning and that is upsetting as a mother first when I was sitting in that seat watching some of the same behavior happen when my daughter was young and I said absolutely not in my presence it is really frustrating that this is happening now and I trust and I know because I am from Community First

022I was a parent sitting there and said no more and I said that is why I'm an noan and over 18,000 people voted for me to be here I have the duty to ensure that their voice is here that I take this time to speak up in this way and to ensure that each one of us each one of us including myself are held accountable for our actions and that if there's any wrongdoing that we are looked into each one of us all five of us because we all should be looked at right now and I'm okay I open my books I open all my messages and anything to ensure that there's accountability held on this board and I will continue to act in that way um and ensure that it's done as a board

023president as a trustee or as a community member either way so I will not go anywhere and will continue to be here and speak up for those that elected me to be here trusty fam well I too was elected by the people of this District uh in the last election and in fact I was the top vote getter and I was elected by the very people to represent your views now I I will say that uh you know uh you know the I resent the some of the character characterizations you've made now obviously we have a again we have a Hu uh near irreconcilable difference in in how we perceive the budget but uh you know uh you know I I sent an email to uh I you know with uh inter room superintendent almazon

024and assistant superintendent chain there's a uh the state Cola for the upcoming budget year has increased uh and that has uh how you say trickle on effects for outline years I'm not going to deny that there is declining enrollment there is a SE there is a drain on the resources of this District but uh I said you know I provided plenty of comment on the uh at the meeting of May 21st I express my reservations I express my reservations about uh the magnitude of such a large consolidation of schools uh the geographical consequences of not maintaining a school in each quadrant this this school sufficient schools in each geographical quadrant of this District I also discussed the issue of uh the city's resoning of our school sites and how that impacts the real estate assets

025of this district and of course you passed a vote for the consolidation up to uh nine schools uh you know I think again I think that we should be more considerate thing would have been to wait a little to see how the how these State Cola uh you know has impr you know the improvements in the state Cola there is an improvement in the state Cola I think I certainly hope that in the upcoming budget we may be able to uh pair back the severity of the uh prop of the past budget savings plan but uh I let me State this to be clear I was elected to save as many of this district schools I was I am a graduate of this District I went you know k through eight nrock schools uh I

026have worked for two State Assembly members that represented this District I live in this District uh you know my you know my red line is clear I'm going to try to preserve as many of this district schools to the extent possible and I deeply resent the implications you make that uh you know it's Reckless to do so uh again I do not see you know a board you know board president can't defend her own school so I'm not uh I'm not uh bound to uh you know be buckled in for that roller coast ride uh as I've said this is an opport you know opportunity to cast no confidence vote and I am going to cast that no confidence vote in both your board presidency and cor ship of trusty Flor Shelton as well any

027other comments questions well that that ended with a surprise I I didn't know uh Lor shter also was involved in this um and uh I'm glad that you mentioned um the directive that was given by staff to um that's another concern Le so right now there's just a lot of things that are adding up in my mind and so more reasons to ensure that we are being held accountable all five of us because when uh staff are given directives by one board member when we as a board have made a decision that is a red flag that is a concern whether I agree or not once we decided as a board I get to move forward with you whether I agreed in that moment or not and I will always vote as I stand and

028I will always speak as I think in the moment not a month later so um thank you for reminding me of some things that get to be looked into because um we none of us should be giving uh staff any directions after a vote has been made by a board um trusty Fam I'm sorry trusty ch um I look at it as an opportunity to vote do no confidence as well um this is not a decision from just last month this is for me this is a decision that has been on my mind for many months and um so this is not personal and we were all voted here by the voters this is has nothing to do with personal reasons this has to do with who we think that can move the district forward

029because ultimately we're all concerned for the kids we're all concerned for what's going to happen but we're also concerned if this is the right way to do it um to us at this moment to me I can't speak for the rest for me it's the right moment to do what we're doing and it's believe me it's nothing personal it's just all of us have been voted here to do what we believe is best for the children and what we see what I see in my heart is I think moving forward with this is what's going to be best thank you thank you any others okay and the last thing I'll say because I just remembered is that um I was also informed months ago that there was some direction given to staff and that that

030direction was not followed um that there were contracts that are were being pushed by some of our board members to be passed and because that didn't happen there was consequences so I'm just again adding things in my mind and just making sure that I'm putting all of us on notice that I will ensure that there is no illegal Behavior Happening Here on on our board on the time of our children and our hardworking families and staff that trust us to do our job so with that I'll go ahead and bring it to a vote all those in favor of passing this item please do so by raising your hand bam vice president ginto and trusty Chavez pass all those oppose myself and Andrea not present moving on to item 203 approved waiver of second reading

032are fighting together and are talking to each other to bring Solutions permanent solutions that will benefit our students our teachers and the staff in here right now just what happened minutes ago hearing I don't trust you hearing I don't believe in you that's a should be a concern from all of us parents out there because when a trusty like this is so divided and broken it means it's only a one person idea and do not help our students does not help my kid that is autistic and that need special education and that the not help the other kids in that Community or that teachers that are trying to get something better every single year going back to again we're not here because of a person we're are here because there's no transparency there's no accountability

033and there's no Communications toward the parents that are trusting you with our kids every single day they're trusting you to make that right decisions to be able to bring our students I was here May 21st and I had to walk out but I join through Zoom I saw that conversation I saw how you were conversing and took a decision together as the team and coming today and say it was it te a disappointed and dising for any other parents that bringing their students here can I with some more I am super worried hurting some of you guys just put in a person in a board president I've heard you guys saying we need a person that that's mov the word forward no it's all of you guys whatever happens go that is all of you

034guys all single of you guys stop that St just putting we've done that before you guys know our history right all history we are know our history right yeah it's bad bad bad bad we have done so much work we have done a lot I mean we Community parents to make a better Alum Rock we're not going to go back to the old times we're not going to go back so you either get your whatever you all have in it you got a B together work together for the own good of our kids my kids her kids at the end of the day you guys are here for our kids it doesn't matter your personal Your Personal Agenda it doesn't matter if you like the person or not if that person doing their job you

035guys need to work together to make sure our schools are learning better now what I've heard is that we know that there's a deficit in the district right there's a depy we know that and it's s but that's a true I don't think one person is going to make magic and make that disappear I hope I wish I really wish that could be wish that that person makes magic of this that's it we we don't have a deficit we don't need more money that's not going to happen let's get to the rules stuff let's work together all together please stop this nonsense It's s of me it's it really so fat that you guys be that thank you Olivia wow disappointment that's all I can say right Beyond disappointment I'm angry I am angry I

036am not sad I'm angry because what I'm hearing is personal agendas here what I'm hearing is contracts what was that the Terra and that was in long ago and some of you sat through it and know the tactics guess what we know them too and we know this is Shady trying to change laws because oh I don't like that person because they didn't put forward my friend in a contract because they didn't do what I wanted them to do again team right but then conflicts of interest and yes you might be have been elected here by voters the same voters that will get those knocks from me and from other family members to get educated on what you are all doing here again what you did today is Shady Shady calling a meeting that was

037said right oh I didn't oh but yes you did you did take accountability for it you call a meeting call it and say it why because you don't want parents here it's done graduations you just happen to finish with graduations did you forget to tell parents while you were at graduation taking pictures hey we're having a board meeting that we just called to replace our board member because we don't like her because we don't agree with her did you I hope you did because that's your duty instead of taking your pictures right again this is sh and I hope you do not vote on it I hope you continue to do what we put you're here to do thank you I just want to take a moment to um think about all of the positive

038things that we've seen in the recent years you know things that have made me very proud as a parent of a student who has promoted from this District when I think about uh some of the hard work that was done around being the the first K8 District I believe in the state to introduce ethnic studies when I think about um Early Learning Centers for our children first of its kind in this local area when I think about teacher housing and I've seen you all work together towards amazing things productive things things that are going to benefit not only our children our staff our parents our community immediately and in the long term when I look at this agenda I mean it it's it spells it out right there right not only the ingredient of calling

039a meeting with short notice all the things that have been said immediately following a day when families are celebrating graduations without one of you mentioning this meeting approval of cont contracts going against decisions that you had already agreed on to happen next week where parents would be involved amending a bylaws specifically around midterm nominations and election of board officers I mean it's right here guys it's in black and white what you all are doing and then finally the approval of a waiver of second reading of amendment of of board violence again I mean it's just it's all very clear and this is a call to action for our community to keep your eyes on this board to keep your eyes on this alumrock Elementary School District to make sure that the very best decisions are

040being made on behalf of our children our families our staff for tomorrow and into the years to come thank you right any uh questions or comments from the board yeah I have some comments vice president kto so um the the board officer positions are are elected by the board not it's not something that takes place through the voters it's an internal thing in all honesty it's a very limited position it's intended to essentially run the meetings uh collaborate with uh with the um Administration to develop an agenda beyond that there's no other power that uh a a president has um you have the authority to reach out to legal counsel and ask questions but even getting questions for the rest of the requires authorization by the board in order to get those clarifications so it's

041not necessarily a position that um that is owned by anybody it's owned by the board the board collectively makes that decision it's through a board majority that you act to place somebody there it's through a board majority that you act to remove somebody there and so with that being said I've heard a lot about my my my this is not anybody's position it you while you're there you have to hold on to it you have to work with everybody give everybody their space so that they can communicate so they can and I appreciate the the the work that uh that board president has done up to this point uh in certain aspects obviously there are others that we haven't agreed upon uh but um yeah I just wanted to make sure to reiterate that this

042is not anybody's position you're not entitled to it you you're it's granted to you by the board and it's your job to go ahead and keep it um I I I think in all honesty there was a there was a sever issue with board bylaws where there was no provision to to have some sort of ability to to make a change if there is a significant difference um we we saw that uh in place previously and so it's for that reason I'm going to be supporting that I was supportive of the the board bylaw Amendment and I'll be supporting item 2.03 any other questions or comments from the board okay I I'll say my comments uh so in regards to bylaws um and I just want to make sure that I'm clear so that the

043community at least gets some clarity because you at least can see this video on YouTube later so we have bylaws that govern us as board members and then we have amendments where we can come in and change the bylaws um as a board majority if three agree to do something they win that happens but then we have a second reading to hold us accountable we have a second reading in order to bring it back at the next board meeting in case some of the community members may be missed to speak up or to say how they feel um and again to continue that transparency to ensure that we're held accountable for any changes that we make now when we have an amendment and a bylaw in the same meeting and then right after the waiver

044of a second reading that's concerning that's another red flag so we need to pay attention um I think it's pretty clear where we're going um I agree you know board president whether I'm a board president or not I will continue to speak up so that's not going to change anything I might sit on that side or or whatever and that's okay um however I do want to highlight the running of the meetings and collaborating with our staff um in this case our superintendent mainly to organize the agendas so I do want to ask our superintendent um has there be been a lack of working with me as a board president to organize the agenda doesn't get them out in time we've collaborate pretty collaborative collaborated pretty consistently um in order to get these agendas um

045published and in place for our public to see and then in regards to running or facilitating the meetings I'm going to ask my peers if they have any thoughts or opinions have there been any issues in facilitating the meetings running the meetings as board vice president mentioned any issues or concerns well since you asked and if you want to go ahead and start having a conversation about I think maybe I more appropriate for a facilitator to come in and have a a an ability for us to work with each other it's going to have to be in public because we're a board meeting but I think there's a lot of opportunities that we can learn from um but I don't at this point I don't think it's healthy to go through it right now I

046think it's better to bring a facilitator that could try to bring some board Unity at a at a at a retreat or something that or a workshop that we can put together uh because if we start going into this this it could turn into a mess without uh somebody to properly facilitate a meeting and have it be constructive so that we can all figure out how we can work best with each other and and move forward so this is exactly what I was trying to prevent from having this conversation in public um therefore I called you specifically left a voicemail in the text and didn't receive a call back you know I look forward to being able to work with my colleagues and being able to have conversations about items on our agenda and running

047the board um I haven't heard any issues directly here other than you know um not agreeing with some of the ways that maybe I voted um so I look forward to you know not having to wait for a facilitator for us to communicate um or I'll continue to bring my questions in public so that the public is aware of what's Happening um with that also before I turn over to trusty fam and then trusty Chavez uh the only way these meetings can be called the special board meetings are either by a board president by the superintendent or three members of our board so I want to make that clear and this case this meeting was called yesterday by trusty mfam trusty Chavez and vice president kto I would not do anything illegal uh I you

048know ensured that in my language you know that was clear and which is why we're here otherwise we would not be here so I just want to make sure that that's clear um and you know back to the point because I don't want to get caught up in this politici way of moving away from what we need to be focusing on the second reading that's being uh proposed to be waved at this time um again calling our community to pay attention to how we're moving with business here at elen Mock trust fam uh Madam president uh I just wanted to note I'm uh for the most part I mean you you know uh do your duties as prescribed but I am concerned uh just now uh you know I I can see the you know

049I from my from my perspective the badgering of prusty ftero and you know some of the things you say you know I think would you know ought to be consulted with with councel uh some of these remark could again land not just yourself but also the entirety of this board in in you know judicial proceedings so uh I I am deeply concerned that the way that some you have framed some of your questions to trusty quo you know just now but also if I recall in the meeting of uh at the uh regular uh the board meeting for the month of April you you did pose qu you did ask uh you know uh questions of to trusty qua which you know nearly which I thought uh could have infr you know could have uh

050you know infringed on the confidentiality of uh you know public employment uh you know as it was related to the uh con you know contract that this District had with a uh uh Mr Jess Cerna at the time and so I'm just deeply concerned that uh uh you know some of you know that the phrasing of your questions uh comes sometimes perilously close to uh uh you know uh D you know creating a legal Risk by divulging uh you know issues of personnel or issues of uh you know persons in active employment and MISD districts thank you trusty I'm glad you mentioned this um the legalities because I did ask our Council if it was legal to wave a second reading and I didn't get a response yet yet so um I'm in agreement ensuring

051that we are following legalities um so thank you for that which is a reason why I mean one of the many reasons I won't be supporting this item uh trusty Chavis um we have waved second readings many times on this board throughout the years this is not the first time it's been done many times it's no surprise and second uh when you stated uh president Corina erera that you said that you allowed all trustees to speak um in the other board meeting where we all voted that we were going to close schools you weren't allowing me to speak you kept cutting me off I was asking Mr COA a question and when you don't like what I say you'll cut me off so you have not g and then even and the other trustee said

056take action and that's what differentiates us from uh you know folks out there that are engaging in violence we can have a difference of opinion and through the uh documents that we've adopted the bylaws um the the the laws that are in place we go ahead and we act upon those and we go ahead and move forward the district continues to move forward um and so while we may disagree and I might not like it um you know you just go ahead and you you move on with it you you accept the fact that that's the the way the decision was made and you figure out how you can collaborate how you can work on on those issues of common concern where you share uh uh a a desire to uh to do something to

057move forward and so um I I don't I don't I don't see the need to engage in vital and angry over the fact that a decision uh might have been made that we don't agree with um I was in I was in the minority by myself when the decision was made by the board majority on a decision that ultimately was reversed I could have gotten angry and start yelling and screaming and get upset um but well let's figure out how how we can go ahead and work this out and turn it into a win-win rather than just sit there and be upset over the fact that I I didn't uh get uh my way that evening and so luckily the community prevailed and went ahead and came up with a a an option as to

058how to go ahead and make a change that is now being worked through and hopefully it moves forward um and so that those are my comments that uh we can go ahead and disagree without being disagreeable there's no need to engage in that historical negativity that uh uh to that that basically you know grab the board and and and and had a hostage for years for decades uh there was still people uh reminding me of the time that board members are running over each other God I I do want I do not want to go to that I believe that boards can have a robust discussion and have a difference of opinion and then leave the meeting at the end of the night saying I don't agree but you know it is what it is

067part of Al BR School District that she came here because we had a board and people and staff that were un Ed for that dream and for that Vision today I don't see that and I don't feel proud because there's no transparency there's no accountability and there was no opportunity for community and parents and students to come here and be part and listen to what is happening here yes we're not sitting in there and we're not make those decisions and whatever you already have decided prior to coming in here it has already been decided but at least Community deserve to he that you're taking out a a board member of her position as a president because you didn't agree to what she said or was or the decision that she took that you don't believe

070point where we lost the ability to manage funding for ourselves we lost the trust the Faith by the state by the [Music] school County Board of Education and our ability to manage our own funds right here and through the work of many we've regained that ability and many strides have been have been made to move forward and those are the kind of things that I want my child to to to be proud of as a member of the east side of San Jose and a graduate of this elen Rock Elementary School District I just want to reiterate that we've seen these types of things before and we're a little reactive I'm upset and I apologize for being upset but I love my children and I love the children that attend these schools and I believe

071that they deserve a chance of the future thank you all right any members of the board wishing to make any questions have any question questions or make any comments at this time all right see none uh the only comments I will say is that uh it's been a pleasure to serve as board president um uh doing my best um doing my job ethically uh facilitating tough meetings conversations but allowing um or facilitating those conversations um and on behalf of all those that I represent um those that elected me to be here my daughter sitali my family um the children the staff of this District um it's been it's an honor it's been an honor to um have sat there as a parent um have watched some of the behaviors on this board that called me

072to be here on this dis um and you know I I look forward to our community um continuing to come together and speaking up and coming to these meetings and engaging because that's how I started um and maybe just maybe some of our future board members are listening and will be um excited upset enough whatever it is to maybe sit on this board in the future to ensure that we are doing our job ethically um honestly transparent um and that we are continuing to hold ourselves accountable so that when we go to sleep we feel good about our actions um you know I just want to say clearly you know again um you know this meeting uh although it was called you know yesterday um majority is the one that will make decisions here um

073and so these things are important for our community to know that we need to pay attention and that there are many red flags um and that I open myself to be you know investigated um and I think all of us uh you know to see what's really happening and the why behind the actions of today because I still haven't heard the reasons for this emergency pretty much meeting um I'm not in the hospital I'm not in jail I'm not not uh not able to do my functions and this meeting was called so there's something um there that doesn't sit right and although I'm only going to be minority it's clear here on this board um I will continue to speak up and I hope that my community continues to hold all of us accountable um

086later than three to get the agenda out to our community as soon as possible my understand standing is truste Andres Kinto Linda Chavez and minf are requesting a special board meeting for tomorrow Friday June 7th 2024 at 7M to include the following six items approval of the contract with mcferson and Jacobson to support the board with a search for a permanent superintendent number two amend board bylaw 910 organization to allow the midterm nominations and election of board officers number three approve waiver of second reading of amendment of board bylaw 9100 to allow board policy to go into effect immediately number four midterm nomination and election of board president number five midterm nomination and election of board vice president number six midterm nomination and election of board clerk please let me know as soon as possible

088um superintendent uh can we ask superintendent to say why that might have gone out that that time can I ask you the the agenda the email oh the the uh when I asked why the email wasn't out and I called you when I had sent this email and uh we were yes um there was an it um server that I understood was it wasn't working our server wasn't working our Exchange Server to be exact and um when I immediately heard of that I contacted our it department and they were working on it immediately and it affected some um some emails uh with you know that were connected with some of our employees so um unfortunately uh it had found that you were one of those emails that were affected by this Exchange Server unfortunately and

096of it we just moved on I it didn't feel great ackowledge never does but it it just is is it's democracy you accept uh the will so Winston Churchill said that democracy is the worst of it's all except for all others uh forms of government when he was referring to that um I would hope that uh when we encourage folks to run we do so because they they want to do was St by the district um I I would never have hoped that somebody runs because my colleague here beat me out or because I was removed as board president or anything like that because I was I was removed as board president and um you continue to move on you move ahead and so my hope and I would encourage good people to get out
