director of state and federal uh prior to me interviewing with her i actually interviewed with mr sanchez who at the time had gone promoted to assistant super academic services so he was my supervisor and so you know i just wanted to jump on tonight thank him for his support of me as my wife and i moved up to the bay area and i found my job there with all of you and i learned a great deal of information especially about the lcap uh all the state and federal uh responsibilities so uh you know that was a purpose for me tonight to come on board tonight just to thank mr sanchez for his work and his support as i moved from director of state and federal and then i moved over to hr and then eventually
assistant soup of hr and i joined him and dr barron her team as a cabinet member so uh with that i just want to wish uh mr sanchez and his familia the very best uh on his departure to his next next destination and and and also uh uh just wish him the best and we'll stay in touch so again thank you for allowing me to speak tonight have a good night all of you all right thank you for your comments mr moran uh mr board president at this time we have no more requests for public comment uh all right i'll go and call for a vote as i see you guys uh unanimously all right the agenda is our adopters is um all right 1.03 there's a welcome solution to the audience um all right

out of town all right yeah it was going to be a light uh light presence from the stakeholders yeah because of many of you now um all right uh well we'll go ahead and move on to item 3.05 dr barty thank you so much i just wanted to let the board know that we started our summer school this week and we have six of our sites um holding summer programming for all of our children we have had um a little bit of you know of a challenge with hiring enough staff but nonetheless our parents are bringing the kids the kids are back in school and we are continuing with the programming that we said we were going to offer thank you very much you know for another year and i want to tell the audience
that um we are closing this very very difficult year um with with very with a lot of gratitude and a lot of admiration for all of our staff members that had a very rough you know from custodians to admins to principals managers teachers everybody had a a very challenging year and we're wrapping it up with grace with perseverance and endurance so thank you to everybody and thank you to all board members for your support throughout this very very challenging 21 22. all right moving on to it 3.06 board of trustees communication and comments um i'm going to go ahead and call you as i see you and so here's your opportunity to speak uh what member chava is uh to save time i'll just pass all right uh you guys switched on me by doing
something give me a second uh board vice president yes thank you mr president uh you know i'll just say it's been quite a year uh you know so i thank everyone uh teachers or janitors and families for uh being with us uh you know in this year uh though we were able to uh see every see our kids back in the classrooms it's been a bumpy ride but in alan rock fashion we we made it in one piece and we look forward to uh seeing you know seeing all our kids come back in the fall i'm glad that we're able to have uh our students uh have the opportunity of summer programs once again this year and i hope that it's something that we can continue to provide especially in these times where we are
coming out of covid and the learning losses related to coven on a lighter note uh i'm glad that uh you know we're you know this summer we're able to start the process of renovating our schools paving the blacktops replacing the marquees uh opening the conversation on workforce housing um you know i also want to take this opportunity to thank mr renee sanchez for all his uh all his work uh for the allen school district we're gonna miss him we're gonna miss his presence and i i wish him uh the best of luck in whatever he does in the future and uh with and so with you know uh one last thing it was very heartening to see our kids at adelante deliver those letters to senator padilla and congressman lockrun it speaks to uh you
know we are we are pro you know uh we are providing our kids the uh opportunities to uh see the big uh the wide wide world and that the sky is the limit and that they can do big things if they put their efforts to it so with that thank you very much mr president board member uh yes thank you president cutero just pretty quickly obviously we've been experiencing um some elevated temperatures recently and we're all feeling feeling the heat um but i want to thank our our team our allen mark t milomark staff um at the end of the school year and you know even at this current time for responding to the needs of each classroom of each site of each um you know request for accommodations with regards to temperature and things
like that in each room it's it's very known that alum rock you know we are in many ways challenge have our hands kind of tied as to what we can do with with the resources that we currently have but our team our alum rock team continues to you know kind of work miracles and and am i saying that everything is always perfect all the time no absolutely not um but it's with the facilities that we have with the resource that we have our team has done i think an excellent job in to the best of our ability as a district making sure that students and staff have an environment that they are able to work in again improvements we as a board and as an allen rock team we've been working diligently over the past
several years to get things lined up to do things very methodically and strategically so that we can address the the bigger issues that we all want to address uh with regards to facilities and and all the different things that are needed and trustee um fam already mentioned some of that work already starting with our asphalt work and the marquees and that's just you know what we can do now but as i mentioned as we continue to work as a board you know the resources that we actually need to be able to really make the difference that we all want are hopefully in the on the horizon and we're continuing to work in that direction but for the time being again i want to appreciate our staff for making the best of what we can do
as a district um with the resources that we have and also acknowledge that you know this is not the issue of during these hot times and and whether it's hot or cold it's not an issue exclusive to alum rock many districts have challenges that come up any particular units and things like that um you know have lifespans and have issues that need to be addressed and so it's a it is a you know a very typical common um phenomenon that occurs in any school in any district but like i said we're working towards addressing a bigger issue because we know that it is something that is brought to us quite often we know it's there and we are trying to do it in a way that will be long-standing and sustainable and not just um
you know to kind of put a band-aid on something we're trying to do it in a way that is going to have long-term impact on our learning community so thank you allen rock staff for for doing that work that's all my comments poor clerk thank you board president uh i just like to acknowledge um our community for coming together on june 11th um as family members community members angered by the gun violence um and so we came together in front of uh the hillview library so just uh want to give thanks for everybody who showed up um and um those of you who also sent uh your thoughts um it was nice you know to see our children um just playing with chalk drawing pictures um doing activities um and really taking our communities back
right i'm saying enough is enough um and with that too uh i've submitted the resolution for safe safer schools um that will be coming to us at our next board meeting um so i look forward to um you know making sure that we're doing everything we can to keep all of our children and all of our staff and teachers safe here in our district um and also you know as a proud trustee but most importantly a proud mom uh you know highlighting the atlanta students for taking the the letters out to washington dc um and you know i want to acknowledge all of the teachers all of the students you know that it wasn't just adelante um you know that group that did the work it was many students that took the time to write
a letter very thoughtfully um ensuring that you know our representatives know what we're feeling here in the east side and alum rock elementary school district so thank you to all the students thank you to all the teachers for making that happen um and then coordinating efforts to ensure that uh zoloftgen you know and alex padilla were there to receive those letters so very proud very proud of our district um and then just uh last but not least you know we're doing so good at ellen rock you know as a parent that's been here now my daughter's going into the eighth grade so you know all those years i'm really seeing you know the journey that we've taken um directly as a parent right in those eight years um i'm just so happy and um you
know the summer programs um this week and she's loving it um and she's like i'm calling my friends to see they want to join i'm like well find out if you they could still join you know so it's really good to hear that feedback from children um and you know with that as parents of maybe younger ones if you have younger ones that are you know pre-k um tk um you know call call the district and find out what the options are find out um you know what's available um don't wait right because we as a district prepare ahead of time um and so not that there won't be a spot but we want to make sure that we plan ahead um that we have the curriculum ready that we have the materials ready so
um you know if you or maybe somebody you know within our district um have somebody you know a student that's younger that maybe you haven't enrolled yet um now is a good time to you know give us a call and ensure that we get um the students enrolled so we can make sure to start our next uh your school year um with all the materials we need all the teachers and administrators um so that we can have a great year so thank you so much and that's it for my report all right well uh for my comments just wanted to touch on upon the i know that we talked about promotions that took place um but there was a promotion took place after our last board meeting i had the opportunity to stop by media
uh by hubbard uh the media arts academy and uh very excited to see the that the development of that site that at one time was in a you know situation that was precarious and helen brock went ahead and made some changes so we could see it flourishing so i'm very excited to see the work that's being done there i especially want to recognize those staff that show up day in day out and do their job uh and and are fully committed to serving our students those staff that you know give it all give it their all i want to especially recognize those staff that uh uh really really uh do they do an effective job by being there on a regular basis with their children by serving those those kids that they work with i
want to thank those folks in particular uh thank you um with regard to uh alum rock i want to recognize something that kind of just goes unrecognized because it's just seen as a normal course of matter that is done in areas that are id uh but uh the fact that we have a summer lunch program we saw what alum rock did that we were a resource for the community as a whole uh throughout the pandemic and i'm just very very grateful uh that i'm part of a district that isn't just uh showing up and we're at you know what is it 8 30 whatever the school hours are um uh that that our district goes above and beyond to uh meet the needs of our community uh for all children uh what is it uh
dr fire reminder i think it's up to 18 that any child within uh our community can go and pick up lunch at our sites and so i want to showcase the fact that our school district is a resources for our is a resource for our community as a whole not just for children that are enrolled because that's exactly what we are we are the district for all of san jose and i'm very very grateful for that um we don't have never mind i'm not going to continue on on that path all of our children are welcome and we don't uh we don't say maybe uh your home school district is your is your best option you know we you are you are all our are our students so please come back bro so um with
regard to a matter that's been it was somewhat addressed by one of my colleagues um but i i think it's important to to speak to this matter and be very clear because alum rock has been basically attacked our staff are very hard working uh units that maintain our facilities members of uh teamsters local three fifth giveaway um hard-working people that uh have been [Music] under attack on the district as a whole has been under attack by a series of uh uh statements that have been made and so dr bauer i i know that you spoke and you gave uh some clarification but i think it's important to provide a complete clarification so there's absolutely no question about what's going on many people think that uh they're being driven by this particular story and so if
you can please specify what's going on with our air conditioning units uh and uh and if you can elaborate on that i think it's important that we understand that that our our staff goes out there fixes things and if they sometimes there is user error and that needs to be addressed i think it needs to be clarified so that our staff isn't being vilified as not being able to to repair you know items uh yes for president um our for the most part our air conditioning is working and is working properly and we have been giving all of us the direct very specific directions about how to how to manage because those are machines right and they have their limitations throughout the the whole this year with the spike of covet in so many ways
we have had two open doors and open windows and we have been given directions including myself because you know i'm not an air conditioning technician so i have to follow directions right and we have been given very specific directions saying if you want to keep your windows open and your door open the air conditioning is not gonna work the way it's supposed to work because these systems were not designed to up to work when there are doors open and windows open and there have been staff who prefer to keep and i understand that we all understand that when we want to make sure we're safe we have decided to open doors to open windows and therefore the machines have busted you know because if you keep the ac on and then you open the window
and open the door they're gonna break so in spite of that mlt has been very diligent always coming back always addressing the situation we i i think trustee vegeta said it perfectly it's not perfect we still have some other machines that once in a while are not working properly we have face you know the the the system the the materials delays the part delays that everybody else in the world has been experiencing in per in terms of parts or things that don't arrive on time but in addition to that with this specific the specific series of comments there has been a choice by staff to leave the door open we fixed them the air conditioning the the weekend before and i asked personally i want to know i want to be updated i want to
make sure that this is addressed we paid overtime to our air conditioning staff to make sure that that air conditioning was working to make sure that the kids and the staff are fine well monday comes back the ac is working and then it busts again because the door was left open so those are the kinds of things that we adults make as a choice and we know that the consequences are the machine is not ready to work appropriately so that's what's been happening um i hope that one day people design an air conditioning unit and a heating unit that may be able to work with open windows and open doors but as of right now we don't have any of that in our district and so that is even with the window units and even
with the the smaller machines that we have to cool off or to warm up a place those machines have been designed to have a closed environment to work properly so no matter what uh system we use in the in this in the classrooms right now they are designed to work with windows that are closed and the door that is closed thank you for the clarification i think it's important that the public and all stakeholders know what the situation is rather than be driven by one particular story or one particular narrative so thank you for that um move on to item 4.01 uh 1.01 approve a superintendent's master's degree stepping up got a motion from member chavez or second uh there's a motion by foreign second by board member do you have any public comment no
public comment and on mr board president all right um all right i'll go ahead and i'll call you as i see you unless there's a further discussion from the board remember travis aye board member aye president aye uh board member aye my sophomore night motion passed unanimously item 4.02 discussion consideration of uh approved resolution 64-2122 motion all right uh give me a quick uh is there a second second motion by programmer chavez second by foreign no public comment mr board president further comments members of the board uh board vice uh yes thank you mr president uh question to dr bauer i believe uh i believe at the last uh uh at the june 9th board meeting i i had asked uh administration about uh a road map to bringing the board back to the board
room in in a high in a hybrid uh configuration uh you know is there any uh updates or consideration uh you know considerations that the board needs to uh think about uh at this time or uh you know uh you know or should we or should we wait until um july at the regularly scheduled meeting for july to check in so you requested this last board meeting on june 9 trustee fam and quite honestly uh one of the major concerns that that was that was highlighted if you recall the last time we had the board in the board um room with one trusty um you know outside the sound system is still not what we need to do so i haven't had a chance to follow up with i.t to address some of those sound
concerns that were written when we had that closed session in the boardroom so i'm just letting you know that because this has been kind of fast you know we had a uh the board meeting two weeks ago yeah and the majority of believe it or not the majority of staff district office staff support staff are on vacation either this week or we're on vacation sometime last week so um just so that you know what's what's going on for us because my you know if that's the case i mean if if we had all five i maybe i was hoping that the hybrid would work better because we wouldn't have that you know issue of the uh you know i well i'm not electronics expert but you know we could better manage the sound here uh
you know in the boardroom you know as opposed to having uh you know it's kind of like electric wires right it works best of all these houses are connected with electric wires underground and you know not like the old the old overhead where you have one wire going to each house like some of the older houses in the city you know that creates a uh a lot more variables to deal with but you know but i i you know so i guess i i do hope that i t has a better idea for us so that we we so that the board has a uh good idea of what it what what needs to happen to have you know all the board members back in the boardroom you know hopefully by you know as i
mentioned the goal would be by september of this year uh board member [Music] uh yes thank you president keep that i just want to um clarify at least how i recall what what my kind of question or concern was at the time is what whether or not um one individual board member or several for that matter or anybody that was in the zoo meeting was in the room at that time my experience on my end and was that the audio issues would have existed whether or not there was one or two people that were not in the room and so those issues with um the volume and the the feedback and the echoing and the muting and all those kinds of things i think um you know as as vice president fam has requested this
roadmap i think those are the things that i would want um for our it team to consider just because from my perspective from that experience it would still be a challenge to provide um you know transparency and access to the public if those issues existed and like i said i believe based on how i experienced it that whether or not one or two or three people were in the room at the time those issues um were independent of that so that's just my thought but that you know that again that's as the team works on developing this roadmap those are the things that i would want them to consider being that you know i want i think we all want for the public to be able to obviously access our meetings and be transparent and
all those things so that was just my experience that i wanted to share with that further comments from members of the board and uh uh dr barr i was just gonna reassure trusty fam that i i will follow up and we'll take care and i agree with trustee pejerano that was my other concern that the sound for the audience it's also appropriate all right um i believe i already called the public comment earlier on correct was it yes correct all right thank you for the reminder um all right look we have a motion in a second uh walrus president you're gonna get your road map and you're gonna work on that with dr power um and so we'll go ahead and move on which is that i'll call you this to you board member travis
hi foreign hi where was president hi board member board clerk this is the adoption of resolution 62-21 mostly 22 the order of election uh do we have a motion for that item motion have a second second do you have any public comments mr board president i see no request for public comment uh further comments for members of the board or member of the board vice president thank you mr president well here we are this is uh you know this is what we mean by democracy so here we have it this is uh vice president trump am i the only one who's having trouble is it sounds a little lower i i hear you all right can you hear me okay what about others are you hearing a board vice president i can hear i can
hear both of you fine i can hear both fine too if you can uh yeah right keep on going okay well yes well here we are we are you know this is democracy at its finest yeah you know uh uh as a school district uh that is community-based uh we are you know our terms are our terms are you know for those of us up this cycle our terms are uh coming to their expiration date so uh you know this is the you know this is the moment where we you know go back to the community and you know ask them you know our performance evaluation right or report card so uh this is where we go to the residence of this district and uh you know ask them to whether or not they approve
of the job we do or not and to choose accordingly and you know i you know it is my hope that i you know all of us have done our best to to earn the trust and the respect of the voters and so is uh with this uh you know it's it's time to uh was it it's time to take our year-end report card you know what whatever grades they they may be so i you know uh you know got no you know uh i believe in democracy it you know we've got to [Music] publish this order so with that good luck to everybody in the upcoming election thank you president quintet i just want to um also provide some clarification for the public that may not already be aware um but this particular election
cycle coming up is a little bit different than what typically would happen at this time and so um just for the purpose of clarity so there are if you look at the board book it's it's provided they're in the board book but there are three seats that will be up that are four-year seats so the people that run for and are elected into those seats will be on a full four-year term each one of them and then there's also a two-year seat which was is the remainder of one of our current seats as well so the person who runs for and is elected into that two-year seat will serve on the board for two years and then they will need to you know if they were interested they would need to run again which then
that will become a four-year seat just as it normally is and correct me if i'm wrong anyone on any of this but that person that wins the two-year seat in this upcoming elite election in two years would need to run again for what would then be a four-year seat um and anybody who did not run this current upcoming election for the two-year seat would then that seat would be up again in two years and it would be four years at that time so to try to make it a little more clear there's three seats that are four-year terms and one seat that is a two-year term and the person that wins a two-year seat would run again if they so choose in two years um and then run for a four-year seat at that time
that would get us back to our normal cycle of three three seats one election and then two seats the next election so if anything that i just said is inaccurate dr bauer or anybody please correct me but i believe that is what we will be um have on our ballot in this upcoming election just for the purposes of clarity for the public any uh anybody else up comments in the center want to further elucidate that's good i think it's important to really thank you all for for letting the public know because they might see this and say well what is this elections and stuff that sort and we have to take this action in order to ask the county to hold the election and then also to consolidate it if not then we'd have to
hold one special election that is solely underwritten by al mock which would be prohibitively expensive and so therefore we have to attach it to your regular election uh general election uh that's taking place in november so um hopefully that that uh lets people know what's going on so some of these esoteric or strange things that take place in the school um while we're on this topic i forgot to mention in my comments i want to congratulate tony alexander former alum rock school board trustee uh who served here years uh you know some time ago and uh who was just recently appointed to the san jose evergreen community college district board of trustees and so we were on the subject of elections trustees and stuff that sort of just i i slipped my mind i had
it in my notes and i didn't mention it so i just wanted to congratulate notes out of order but if you'll indulge me uh i wanted to congratulate um now trustee board member alexander um all right so we have a motion in a second i called the public comment earlier and uh if there's no further comments from members of the board i'll go ahead and move forward with the votes as i see you we'll remember travis [Music] um all right we're going to move on to it approval of the ar usd strategic plan um i trust that um everything got worked out uh in all the uh items in the edits were taken care of between the board meetings so this point um if uh is there any comments from members of the public mr
board president at this time i see no request for public comment all right uh board member chavez you raise your hand i i think i did it by mistake but i was but now that you called on me i guess uh when they're done with their comments i just wanted to make a motion to approve okay uh board board member yes thank you uh just briefly i wanted to thank dr bauer and thank the committee the team that's been working so hard on the strategic plan i know uh myself and and trustee herrera had some specific feedback at the last meeting and so i believe we both provided that i know i provided that and i believe trusteer and i did as well um to the team and i want to thank them for doing
um a good job of integrating um the feedback that we had um and i think we both we were able to do it in a way that at least as far from my perspective um still keeps all of the integrity of the work that was previously done by the group by the committee um and just kind of adds a little bit more onto that um to to to create what i think is a very comprehensive um plan that we can work with going forward and i believe as all as many of these kinds of things as is the case with them it is a living document i believe i'm open to being corrected on that but if so then you know as the environment changes as our you know the realities of the district change
we can always modify and improve upon it but i think we have a good product now and i just wanted to um express my gratitude to everyone for not only developing the plan but also integrating some of the feedback that they received so thank you yeah i i also wanted to thank uh the staff um and the team for uh listening to our feedback and you know um kind of back and forth you know we had a couple conversations uh i especially want to thank um the superintendent you know because there are some things that i'm like you know i had to have drawn for me to understand and you know i think vice versa so that we can get to a point where you know um we all feel good you know and i
feel a hundred percent about this uh very again proud of the work that has been done especially having been you know a part of the strategic planning team um before i become a trustee is the um very grateful for you know especially the parents you know that sat um you know i know staff get paid but you know as parents you know we do it voluntarily and so um you know really uh feeling grateful for for their involvement especially um and you know i thank you dr bauer i did see the edit on page four um to have a metric system that uh we can you know at least work off of so that you know we can see the improvement year by year um so yeah thank you so much uh board rest president
yes thank you mr president uh you know thank you thank you to everyone uh you know more you know fellow trustees the administration staff parents who work on this thing you know uh it's quite a journey you know i think that we we kind of started this off early in 2021 uh working you know in partly with the glenn price group to kind of start laying out our you know our own core principles and you know to see you know where there was common ground and you know we we have a document that you know wow while it will be ever changing it's the framework that this district is going to take to uh provide in a a quality education to the children we serve so you know it is uh you know uh i'm
optimistic that this uh strategic plan will serve us well you know in you know as we move forward you know as uh you know and it's sort of fitting that in the 90th anniversary uh year of our district that we are putting in place a strategic plan to uh provide a 21st century education uh an education for the you know next century of students so with that uh you know i'll be in favor of this strategic plan and with that thank you very much uh board member travis yeah um i'm just thankful that it we had finally have a strategic plan and if we can vote on it thanks all right um i want to thank all those involved in strategic plan we know that uh staples as was mentioned but i also want to
recognize all the stakeholders parents and all the other groups uh staff and everybody who's who was instrumental in putting this together and ensuring that it was a product that came from the district that's going to guide us and serve as a north star as we move forward to ensure that we've provided a quality and dignified education to all of our children here in alamo and so thank you all for your work um particularly my colleagues that uh went ahead and took out the red pan and started really digging uh digging indeed those of us who you know uh i i was comfortable with the work that was done by the body had a couple of uh slight modifications here and there but i do appreciate um the extra effort that was put on by my
colleagues who went ahead and really you know had a significant had some very substantive uh um additions that are gonna be that are making that much stronger remember thank you for your work uh former travis i want to recognize your diligence and ensuring that uh this stayed on and that we moved on it so appreciate your um your work on this as well uh remember ben i know you had a comment yeah i forgot to say this sorry during my comment but i wanted to um i guess propose this for my colleagues and and dr bauer see what you think but you know sometimes in my experience working with mission statements or strategic plans or things like that it's a lot of work goes into creating them and then they get put in a nice
binder or a powerpoint or whatever and then they just put it up on the shelf and five years later seven years later it comes up again and we create a new one and so i was wondering um what the thought might be as to setting an agenda item annually um i'm thinking and just as a like a review or a report on how the work that the district has done during that particularly year has aligned with the strategic plan and or what modifications or shifts may be needed as we move forward in you know in the work in a dynamic environment and everything going on so basically it's what i'm i guess proposing i guess i'll propose it as part of the motion maybe and it would maybe be an amended motion would be to
include a yearly agenda item just a report back on um how the district has worked in that that preceding year to align with the um the work of the committee and the strategic plan itself good idea uh board member travis do you have random if it's gonna hold up the strategic plan now i would i would like to maybe ask uh trustee pejerano if we can do that in the next meeting but for now i think um because it has been developed if we can go ahead and vote on it today so that we can have the strategic plan start laying out and then maybe add to it uh like he said annually or semi-annually but i think that's a good idea what trustee behrano said thank you uh so your idea was to approve
this strategic plan and then direct staff to come back within six months or a year from now yeah i don't my intention was not to hold back in any way like starting to move forward with what we have currently tonight um it was just to add on an annual um review of the work and how it aligns with the strategic plan so i'm saying annually as a repeating item every year you know we could select whatever month that may be in but um maybe you know maybe this time of year or something like that might be a good time um next year from from today's date or something like that so that's what i was proposing but my intention is not to hold back the approval of the item tonight yeah i don't i don't
think that is something that's going to hold it up because you know if you go to the challenge or the city everybody already incorporates an assessment 20 policy so this would be basically that a year you know a year from now assess whether or not so is that a motion or do i have a motion motion please the motion by removing that uh the item be approved along with a uh in a year from now come back staff come back with an assessment of the strategic plan yes can i just tweak that a little bit not just what i'm saying is not just in a year from now but annually so a year from now but then annually after that as well you can do that but right here what we're doing is saying come
back in here for now all right whatever like yeah sure let's go ahead a yearly basis yes all right so my motion is annually on a yearly basis thank you so you're approving it and asking for an annual review sounds good we need a second now second second okay i think uh remember give it a second excuse me so when i changed it we didn't need another second well you accepted the you you made the motion correct the second one the first time the second and you're gonna move more annually so okay thank you just for clarification thanks so we got the motion there's a second any further comments from the board seeing none then i'll go ahead and play as i see you i had called for public comment earlier so we'll move forward
with uh the votes whatever child is hi foreign uh member of behalf aye for vice president trump aye for uh clerk anybody wish you a comment please indicate by mr board president we have no request for public comment on this item all right uh any further comments members of the board see none i'll call you as i see you remember chavez no board member uh aye board rice president yes okay you know man it sounds really loud yeah now now okay because i can hear the rest of you really well so uh um man i think if you can figure out if that microphone is covered up or something or or something going on can you hear me now cause it's getting really difficult to hear or if you can uh mute yourself and i
mean yourself the last time it worked really well can you hear me now it sounds like you're really far away like you're talking like a tube or something give it a try or maybe you log off and lock back on okay oh that sounds better okay you can hear me now i think when you're moving the the screen or something it messes with the microphone okay now i can hear you just keep it that way okay don't move it don't breathe [Laughter] um i'm in the boardroom so this is this is not a good you know another area to have um all right moving on to item 5.01 this is the adoption of the district's proposed 2022 through 2023 budget uh dr bauer um i'm assuming that mr chang is going to go ahead and
provide a presentation yeah he's he's about to speak yes good evening board president members of the board and dr bauer um there is no presentation up with this item uh the presentation was done last last on june 9th and so respectfully um staff is is is requesting approval um for the budget that was presented on june 9. all right um any comments remember to the public no no request for public comment on this item mr board president all right uh moving on to um thomas remembers the board uh more turkey i was just excited to see clover come on because i thought maybe he was gonna tell us we were gonna get additional millions he didn't tell us on the ninth um no i i don't know do we have a motion yet and if
not i'll motion to approve yeah i'll accept the motion uh there's a second second but i have a second vibe i can't hear you or we can't hear you uh it's very difficult to hear so you mess around with that screen do something to it or if need be log out log back in to make that thing work you know what you want to do is go to the uh to the little arrow on the side of your microphone and start uh working on your on your mic to see if it maybe you have a different mic or something out of curiosity trusty fam do you have uh earbuds or earphones or anything like that not with me you know usually that i want to try to troubleshoot it but okay well you sound good
now though he sounds real clear now all right yeah i think it's when the screen moves so okay so i second i just have a question from mr chang okay okay mr chang so with with 99 percent of the vote in so are uh do we should we expect uh you know even nicer i i shouldn't say night but a updated uh budget uh in you know with the inclusion of the property tax parcel tax revenues going forward yes and thank you for that question um yeah when the county certifies the election itself to make it official then we'll we'll be making the necessary um revision to the budget itself and so that'll be reflected in the next cycle okay very good thank you so much all right um there was a motion and second
theory further discussion for the board all right see none then let's go ahead and uh i'll call you they see you board uh member chavez no board member yes board vice president yes world trade connector hi my sophomore night motion passes four to one with travis working right now so uh man you're on youtube no no no i i'm here it's just the the uh the uh technician is here i believe you should mute yourself now um 5.02 approved contract with erc alternatives for energy consultant services move to approve what's up move to approve all right motion by the uh board member i don't have a second sec second board uh a second by board clerk do you have uh comments from the public i see no requests for public comment on the side of
mr president all right um board member yes thank you president quintero so i just want to um you know say i'm i i'm excited about moving forward with this contin now making continued um consistent progress on this and to try to find out what opportunities may exist for the district um you know i think that as a board at least for myself i think that we not only owe it to the community and to the district but are obligated to look for opportunities to either decrease expenditures or increase the resources that come into the district and so for that reason i'm very happy that we are moving forward with this um and it's just kind of seeing it on the agenda this month and obviously again this is just furthering the work but as we
continue the work i get more excited because i know you know the challenge that we've had to get to this point and and i had even forgotten um because we had so much other big stuff that we've had to address between when i first brought it to now there's been a lot of work that we've done in other areas but i also did forget that at some point it was it at least seemed to become a very um a political topic or or i mean for maybe for lack of a better term um and i'm just glad that at this point that hope i'm hoping that at this point that my colleagues are um you know together with me in this motion which again just continues the work of looking at the opportunities that may
exist for us so you know this is not a commitment necessarily to any kind of work or any kind of project or anything like that it's a commitment to looking into what the possibilities may be and so the journey that it's take that it's been to get to this point and the fact that you know we are seeing now because we've worked to strategically implement everything that we've done to this point i'm excited about the momentum that we're making so i'll be supporting this tonight and i'm hopeful that my colleagues will as well thank you the only thing i'll add to that is um you know also um thank you uh trusted because you know we are um making decisions now that are affecting our future right we just passed our budget if we don't
have a budget how can we pay our teachers or anything else i mean and this you know is is not just to ensure that you know we start like in the long run saving money you know and looking at different um opportunities and ways that we can get our energy but also you know being mindful and intentional right when when we um use energy um and you know that the energy that we use today you know however we use it right whichever way shape or form um that it comes in and that you know is being used that it is impacting future generations and so um also you know ensuring that as we're making these decisions as we're getting our consultants to you know come and tell us right things i mean because i'm not
in that area but um that the questions you know we get to ask now um are also inclusive of that in those thoughts um of what we're doing now that will affect our future generations i'm just excited you know i know um you know in regards to that you know there's um already schools that have implemented programs um that are already saving them money so um thank you verano i look forward to you know continuing to um to learn about this area um you know because i myself don't know much so i'm having this consultant will really help me um in moving forward and asking the questions and making sure that we got all the eyes and cross all the t's so thank you uh board vice president yes well to give credit where credit
is due to uh thank trustee bay hirano i know that this this was his bug bugaboo so he you know for to bring us to the you know to to the board's attention and i think you know i'll just put it in simple terms this is about taking taking what is a cost and turning it into something where we can use uh use our grounds to generate additional revenue to take a liability you know and turn it into an asset that you say and so in the process not only saving us on energy but also uh taking the you know the deadweight cost of uh our buildings and our parking lots and use you know uh the ability to sell that energy right back to the utility company you know and uh to strengthen our
budget down the line uh for future years and you know this is something you know that you know we should we should all be excited about as we begin that process of you know now that we have a uh advisor to eventually get to the point of selecting the contractor who will you know hopefully uh you know what uh bring local jobs along with it but also yes to put in the infrastructure where we can use our bed we use our buildings to benefit this district even when they are not in use so it is with that i you know vote intend to vote yes on this item thank you uh board member travis um i'm not against solar and never have been but i also know that we have a decline in enrollment and
we just close some schools and maybe in the future we might in the very near future we might be having to repurpose other ones so i don't see the logic in putting a solar system on something that we made as alan rock educators not have students there so i will be voting no on this thanks all right um thank you for your comments um i'll wrap up with my workbench where the phone do you have your comments you need to mute yourself i know it muted by itself so i i think i wanted to answer trustee chavez's concerns he you know i think and i as i allude to we still would own the property so the thing is it would still be under our ownership you know and the whole point of solar is
to make use of those properties when they are not in use you know as those solar panels collect solar energy and converts it into electricity and uh you know when they're in use of course it will you know we would be supplying our own facilities with power but you know but the good thing about solar is it's to take take that energy convert it into that electricity and again you know as i mentioned sell it right back to pg e and you'll you know uh revenue for a district you know and so that's you know that's the huge benefit of solar you know by owning the facilities we have we own the platform we're not you know i i've said it you know many many times since i uh taken a scene on this board
which is not to sell any property of the district and this is an opportunity for us to is a uh take a liability and make it into an asset to you know uh to sell what people are wanting which is energy and you know adding to our district's bottom line so we can continue to provide quality education for our children provide them new and better opportunities in the future years and also to pay our teachers and our staff what you know they are really worth so you know i you know i just for the life if we don't see any downsides where you know instead of paying cutting checks to pg e this is our chance to have pg e cut checks to allen roth thank you all right bob borman roberto uh thank you
yes i i just wanted to um i guess say that trusty travis question is a valid one i think and you know we if if there are as you mentioned variables that we may not be aware of at this time with regards to our facilities and how they will be purposed you know then it is valid i think to question um you know the the potentiality of moving forward with some type of a a solar energy program however i want to remind trustee chavez and everyone else that this item here in front of us tonight is precisely that really it's for a consultant to come in and tell us hey you know it's not a good idea for you right now because x y and z purpose purposing may happen and and you need to
hold off or they may say now is the time to do it you know costs are are rising and and you have these sites that you can you know whatever it may be the point of this item tonight is is just that so we can have an expert who can take a look at our current situation the sites the facilities our strategic plan our budget everything and then provide us with some expertise about what the next best steps would be that are most beneficial to the district so this is not tonight again and to move forward in any particular direction it's to get the the expert on board who can actually answer the questions like those that trustee chavez has and trusted mentioned that you know she's not an expert i'm not an expert so
this is bringing the person who can give us that expertise so that then we can make an informed decision one way or the other on what is best for the district with regards to solar uh what member drivers um i do want to clarify something because i've said it every single time in no way have i ever said sell any property nor will i ever that doesn't have to be mentioned every single time especially since i don't mention it but i do like the fact that yeah we are going to bring somebody but i'm just saying that with declining enrollment and the fact that we need to consolidate um other schools to me this is not a good idea and this is a middleman in between because if you do buy it outright then you're
gonna actually get a bigger check but if you're going to have a middleman in between that is going to make their profit allen rock is not going to profit as much that's it thank you all right um i'm going to wrap up with my comments we'll go ahead and move on to the item i haven't spoke yet so um this item has a long time coming and i want to do i appreciate board member behind in pushing this item forward and keeping on it uh because it has been a difficult process other people may have given up and said i forget it i appreciate your diligence and making sure that this decided to move forward it was unnecessarily politicized at all levels attacks against personal attacks against my integrity uh board member behind those integrity
all based on a desire just to simply learn whether or not this is even feasible in all my study to tell us if we if it's going to work i remember somebody calling in specifically begging us saying please don't move this item forward until december because they were concerned about i'm assuming they were concerned about the november elections it just makes absolutely no sense and i'm very saddened by the fact that we possibly have lost out on significant amount of savings that could have gone directly back into the general punch because people hyper politicize this issue unnecessarily um a couple of things that i am very proud of is that while we went ahead step back and get our due diligence which i'm you know proud of um a little frustrated but i'm still proud
of the fact that we went back and redid everything and now we're looking at it and once again to reiterate this is for a consultant who has already told us that in certain instances he comes back and he's not here to say yes move forward i'm gonna you know support you in the great land they don't work with uh energy companies all they do is child public agencies whether or not it makes sense to move forward with an injury with their project and they've given us examples of places where they've gone they said it just doesn't cancel out for you it doesn't make any sense and so i'm comforted by the fact that they're very independent and that they're not tied to any energy company i'm looking forward to seeing the results um hopefully they
will i'm being honest this is just my position hopefully they will a result in findings that allow us to save money and allow us to move forward and return that money to the general fund so we can invest it back into our children so um looking forward to seeing this move forward move forward any um if there's no further comments i'm going to go ahead and i'm going to call for a vote as i see you i believe i called for public comments item earlier we'll say uh can you remind me yes yes thank you i just want to make sure um all right board member child no or remember yes or where is president from yeah your mic is you at least i can't hear you i don't know feel it all right we'll
take that thumbs up uh and board uh board clerk aye all right thank you for that uh motion passes president quintero did you vote well i said yeah with myself 49 motion sorry um oh i said with myself 49 motion passes it's actually not unanimously sorry about that it's uh 4-1 with chavez vicente and you know what i i forgot to mention that uh in between that all that time we're able to move forward with the policy on on power purchasing policy that ensures that any program that does move forward uh guarantees that will the jobs will have to go to um to local people first so i'm very proud of that because uh as part of that work it was required general counsel was very thorough and demanded that we bring back a thorough
report about the differences in income uh so that we can uh sustain the policy if we're ever challenged and uh it was dark um we saw that uh berryessa is twice the amount the wealth uh ever bring twice the amount of wealth we're surrounded by wealth is in a different situation and for that reason we are able to pass a policy that uh guarantees that jobs will go first to people who live within the zip codes that encompass alumni and so thank you for indulging me i just want to make sure to add that before we move forward from this item um moving on to it 6.01 approve uh universal pre-kindergarten planning and implementation plan at ala martin elementary school district uh doc uh board member travis is that a motion yes i got a
motion from board member travis do you have a second second uh second by uh do you have any comments from the public mr board president uh no public comment uh for this item um and i'm assuming there's going to be a presentation by dr barcelona laura's yours hi um well you have in front of you it's no presentation you have the summary plan it's a sixth place plan so this is about our upk if you remember in the last board meeting um for this uh california department of ed ellen rock had to prepare a upk plan a tk plan so that's what you have in front of you there are six pages that summarize the full 66 page template that you also have in front of you and basically we had focus areas that we
had to answer from a to e and all those answers are in there and you can look at all of the plan and i'm available if you have any questions it also gave us a place for non-competitive points from the california department of vet so that we get the plan so the most important thing is that we present this to our board of trustees and that's why you have it here in front of you all right see now that i'll go ahead and call you as i i'll make some comments i'm really excited about uh us moving forward with this item it's been a um when i got onto the board one of the things that was very important after doing my further inquiries and the passion was to extend the school day that was
kind of the theme how do we get to extend school day how do we keep kids uh continue to learn longer um and so um in addition to that i'm very very excited to see that now we're bringing in the children at an earlier age to ensure that they now are um having a pathway towards uh academic success we know every study study after study demonstrates that those children that are in preschool will usually um do better and academically and go to college and stuff that sort so excited to see this uh taking place i see that my colleagues are excited as well i'm assuming and i'm going to call them as i see them uh board vice president phone oh uh yes uh are we voting or i i can make my comment uh
i would make your comments but go ahead and make your comments okay afterwards okay yes i mean uh you know uh as they say a dollar invested in education provides more returns than a dollar invested in uh the criminal justice system so uh this is an opportunity to you know uh reinforce what's taught in the classroom fill in gaps uh in learning and also uh you know uh find you know in a sense uh creating new opportunities for our district to have more children in our district so it is what with that spirit that i intend to vote yes on the item thank you uh board clerk for president i see dr brower's hands up is it okay to have her say something because it might add to my comment oh okay dr bauer go
for it thank you board president this is a very exciting time and i just wanted to thank dr valesteros uh for her incredible leadership in our district to um help us writing this plan and diana you know that we are ahead of that game right did the other districts are just catching up to us we have been ahead of this game since 2015 when we accepted the first four-year-olds and um people were like well how can you afford i remember i had to answer that question so many times how can you afford bringing this four year olds and then we push the the birthday all the way to the march 31st the first district in the state to do that and i'm very i'm very proud and i'm very proud of the support trustee quintero
has been there from the very very beginning and this is about not only which is very important planting the seeds because every child who has an opportunity to go to preschool has an opportunity to be on grade level by third grade that the the numbers don't lie right and that is part of why we have some huge challenges in alum rock because that opportunity has not been equitable for all of our our four-year-olds in alumrock so very excited about this very excited about being a pioneer district very excited about moving forward with this plan and by that remember the state is catching up to us so that's how wonderful this is and thank you uh dr valesteros for that leadership that you have provided for this thank you dr brown thank you so much yeah
yeah alam rock practices the science i always say when i'm talking to colleagues you know we know the science and so we have practiced it since 2015 and now everyone is catching up thank you um so i'll go ahead and go over that's okay doc president yes thank you um yeah i just want to add to that you know dr baesteros you know when i'm in uh different meetings um your name comes up and you know always honored um to have it come up you know in the ways it does and so i'm like you know don't take her so we're very blessed to have you here leading these efforts ensuring that uh we're you know making sure that we're implementing um the best of the best here at alum rock especially for our children
um at the pre-kindergarten level you know as um and this was talking about you know my my passion you know and one of them has been to end that school-to-prison pipeline and as uh trustee fam mentioned right when we invest in our children at a younger age um that shift happens we change the narrative and so i'm happy that you know we don't just talk about it but we put our actions behind it here at alum rock um that that narrative you know for for youth who grow up in certain ways you know that here at alum rock all of our youth are um being exposed to numbers and colors and you know learning and like dr brower said that at third grade they're at grade level and that you know they're talking about which
college they're going to what career they're going to have and that we're providing those spaces and places and conversations um so that our children can end up there and then come back you know it's um it's just a uh [Music] i'm grateful and you know it makes me smile every time i hear our alumni you know i know we have many here on this board you know that say i went to allen rock union elementary school district i graduated from there you know and they're coming back to give back and so that you know continue to help that process um so thank you for your leadership and i look forward to you know having more babies coming through those doors as we continue to move right towards that zero age um i never thought right
it's like oh school you grab your backpack you walk in line but to be able to you know get them earlier where you learn songs and you know what it even means to you know walk in line and and you know and also play and thrive and um you know get rid of some of these boxes that we have our children and you know i just i look forward to like you said putting that science in action right we know we know what works we know what doesn't work for our children so how do we work to eliminate those things that no longer serve our children maybe they served you know 50 years ago or 90 years ago when alan rockford started but no longer right and so how do we put knowing that action
i'm sorry knowing the science putting it in action and erasing some of these boxes that maybe were created before so thank you for leading the efforts and i look forward to also supporting this item thank any you comments members of the board all right i think we're going back to our roots i was a product of a state-funded preschool there out of san antonio elementary and uh some of my most fondest memories are during those formative years were right there in that uh little playground uh whether it was the playground whether it was a nap time how all those things come back to really really influence and affect the way in which you develop as a child and then into adulthood and so it was unfortunate that for many years the state chose to step
away from that because it was i was here and i was there as a preschooler the state funded preschool um and uh but i'm glad that we're we're getting back there we're gonna we're gonna do right by the kids moving forward um yeah just to not be misunderstood this wasn't alan rock's choice the state took away the resources to fund preschool finally bringing it back and doing the right thing um all right i'm going to go ahead if there's no further comments for members of the board i'm going to call you as i see you uh board member chavez hi board member hi for board vice president hi board member if you can hear me hi uh with my sophomore night motion passes unanimously all right 6.02 approved california state preschool program contract just quickly

time to thank the teachers and the parents this is such a community effort it really does take a village so it's uh thank you parents thank you students for your hard work and our other teachers are amazing so thank you so much all right moving on to item 6.06 review and approve the 2022-2023 i'll cap 2021 2022 i'll cap annual updates and the 2022 2023 budget overview for parents and the el capitan um motion looks like we all right we have a motion by board member travis about a second a second by our board clerk do you have a public comment no request for public comment on this item mr board president all right um do we have further comments from members of the board um and uh all right i'm assuming that there is
a presentation that goes along with this item not have a presentation this evening just like the budget we uh presented our presentation at the june 9th board meeting and so i've just been checking in with the county office of ed back and forth making some little minor adjustments here and there but it is now ready to be approved and approvable by the county office of vet as well gotcha all right well since there's no further comments from my colleagues i'll go ahead and call them as i see them or remember chavez hi uh board vice president bomb aye foreign uh we got the i'll cap um [Music] plan for uh for aptitude for information only okay all right then um if there's no is there any public comment what's that no request for public comment
at this time mr board president all right um 6.08 progress of local performance indicators this is for information only do we have any public comment on that item no public comment at this time for that all right see none then dr bauer do we have uh any uh presentation on this item yes all right i'm assuming sandra's the floor is yours yes thank you okay good evening board president quintero doctor superintendent dr bauer members of the board public um i am here this evening and uh barbara campbell will be co-presenting with me i think she's been maribel can you make sure that barbara is if not i'll go ahead and do it um we tag team on this one there's some local indicators that are under her jurisdiction and some that uh i support and
norma flores is also here to answer any questions um related to um some portions of the the um presentation so um as part of the lcap development we're required every year to measure progress on local indicators it's just another data point that we use to um develop the lcat so um we are to report the results as part of the non-consent item um at the same time that we bring the lcap for adoption which is in june um the second part to this is reporting the results on the dashboard the california dashboard in november so you all know this we have state indicators and we have local indicators the state indicators are given to us by uh the cde and those results like for sbac results and attendance and chronic absenteeism those are all provided
to us by the state because those are all held in their their database based on information we provide to them this evening is about the local indicators and those are data based on what we collect locally so this is just a side by side of which each of them include so the state indicators include the academic indicators the suspension rate indicator english learner and indicator chronic absenteeism rate and then the local indicators are those that are basic service services and condition of learning which is priority one implementation of state academic standards which is priority two parent engagement which is priority three school climate priority six and broad course of study which is priority seven and that's what this presentation is based on tonight this is just a sample of the dashboard and you can find
ours on this this website um california school dashboard.org and this is what it'll look like uh very quickly i just want to remind you that the dashboard in the past few years um we have not been able to update um information on that are related to uh student test scores due to the fact that we hadn't given the test in two years so we're this spring we were able to um give the s back one more time so next time that we present our information onto the dashboard we will have information again on student achievement this is just some information as a reminder of what happened during the pandemic when we had to pause and the state had waivers for pausing all of the reporting on the dashboard so we will resume again with what
is expected to be placed on the dashboard um starting in november so local um indicator district performance this is state priority one and this is basic services this is basically um the the items that are also included in the williams settlement requirements um and we have to um report on what how well we're doing in this area and so there are three different sections and the first is has to do with teachers and their assignments and so this year we had two teacher miss assignments when it came to english learners we had three total teacher miss assignments district wide and then we had to start the year we had 18 vacant teacher positions which were worked on throughout the year but these are the numbers that are reported at the beginning of the year we
had zero students that did not have access to their own copies of standard online instructional materials every student had access to that and then we had when it comes to the fit reports um the facilities um oops i'm sorry facilities reports for each site there were 10 instances of that different schools didn't meet good repair and there are a variety of areas that are measured in this so 10 district wide state priority 2 um is barbra's is barbara on i'm here yep absolutely turn it over to you thank you so state priority 2 is really tied to the implementation of academic standards uh and it really reflects on the teaching curriculum the curriculum we provide professional development some of those areas in order to prepare our teachers and what we've done over the last various
years is i surveyed teachers we send them out and they have to rate and and this is a self reflection rating scale that the state gives us so as you can see the teachers are to degraded exploration beginning development initial implementation full implementation or if we are in full implementation and sustaining so as you can if you want to go and this this year every year i have a different if you can go back one every year i have a different level of response from teachers um from anywhere from 200 to 50 to 75 every year just it just depends on where everybody is at that moment in responding so state priority two though if you look and see the first the the first square talks about how we are providing professional development around the
common core state standards and the frameworks if you see a star next to a number that indicates that the rating went up this year so as you can see they feel like ela eld and math are we're pretty um we're we're pretty um in full implementation and ngss which is our science um is a two and our history and social science is uh two also the second part is do we have instructional materials that are aligned to common core and are they available for them doing their teaching and classroom and as you can see they all feel ela eld and math is there science is there and again history and social sciences has gone up this year from last year the last part the number three is around identifying areas that we can improve in
delivering instruction and providing you know collaboration time teacher pairing things that help the teachers teach better and support and us supporting staff and as you can see ngss and history have a two and three because those pretty much were even we had a same number of people that gave it a two and the same number of people that gave it a three so we we did get twos last year across the board we did get some threes this year on that area so really looking at what kind of support we're giving them strategically on being able to implement the standards curriculum next slide please save priority 2 also includes implementing the progress in implementing academic standards in some additional areas that have been brought in from the state career technical education health ed physical education
visual arts world language we got ones on these um visual art visual and performing arts went down from last year so did physical education and showed a career technical education um not sure really why but i think um you know it was a very tough year for everybody we did continue to provide the same levels of support and the same level of tools especially especially in visual performing arts we had a lot more outside agencies that provided trainings and providing lessons for students um so but again this is just honoring what our teachers felt the last one is the success in engaging the following activities for teachers and administrators so identifying professional learning needs for for teachers and staff identifying the needs for individual teachers and then providing support for teachers that haven't yet mastered
it and that we um got twos and ones on that area one of the things and one of the things that um we did talk about we did is that i did ask teachers are there additional things that there was just kind of one open-ended question and it was you know what are some additional things that they need and a lot of them were coaching for edtech obviously that's still tied to having to do a lot more technical uh teaching a lot of online teaching uh providing opportunities for students to do more things on technology so teachers we're feeling that we need to um do a bit more of that and that is something that we are putting in place this year with the support of jackie montejano here in academic services around really looking
at how can we better support not just our teachers on using technology but our students and also our parents in order to support their own students in the work they're doing next slide sandra oh this is mine this is state priority three and this um this priority measures our progress in um parent engagement so when it comes to parent engagement there are two um there are several things to look at when we give ourselves the self rating the first are the results from the panorama survey uh and the second are um the results from the self assessment tool that is provided to us by the state so this is the the piece from the panorama survey these come straight from the survey and um we pull out the pieces that do deal with parent engagement
and this is what parents um reported on the the spring pan around the survey in terms of strong sense of belonging 95 feeling connected 95 welcome to participate in school 93 staff treats them with respect and then the staff welcomes their suggestions 94 this is the um the rating tool that is provided to us by um the california department of ed um as a way to look at three areas the first area um in parent engagement is building relationships and what um what i've done is um look i've taken this to the advisory groups and we also built it into our lcap forums this year into the input sessions and asked these three specific questions you know how are we doing in our district on building relationships and then the following two and then also
what are some of the examples what are some of the things we are doing really well what are some of the things we still need to work on and so um you know some of the things we're doing well are you know copies with the principal workshops with the community liaisons for parents the parent score app is talked about favorably by a lot of parents the district website and that we have welcoming and friendly staff um one of the topics that um was brought up by various parents in different groups this year was was the whole um multicultural and and just um have this sense of uh the need for us to really expand on the opportunities for students to learn about various cultures and so these are just some of the examples that were
mentioned but um it was brought up by by several parents and so that i thought it was important to add to this um slide and also the need for more communication besides parents were some parents um feel that there are parents that are still being left out of communication because they are not on the app they they don't have phones that can support the app and that some parents are just resistant to it and still need other forms of communication between home and school the second area in this tool is the building partnerships for student outcomes and this is around the partnership piece you know do we provide professional learning to our staff on you know the their capacity to partner with parents do we provide families with information and resources to support student learning
and development and then the implementing policies and programs to discuss student progress and then supporting families to understand and exercise their legal rights and advocate for their students and there were a lot of really favorable comments in general parents are very appreciative of everything we do you know the parent university the the workshops we provide the interpretation services again the parent square app but searching for a little more in terms of really guiding parents like on how to understand their legal rights and how to advocate for their students doing more on that and possibly expanding the parent university and providing many workshops throughout the year because you know a lot we're mentioning that you know it's a great event and they get a lot of it out that day but throughout the year they would
like to have similar types of workshops that respond to some of these needs and then the last section is the seeking input for decision making and this has to do with building capacity of staff and family members to be part of the the whole decision making process and then also again the policies and programs and implementing stretch to reach and seek input from underrepresented groups and the whole working together like having groups um involving the different stakeholders in the community to come together and really design and implement uh family engagement activities um so um many parents i mean again parents are very um appreciative of everything we do in terms of providing leadership training providing opportunity for them to be involved bringing them to the table and one of them comments or several comments were
that there's inconsistencies between schools and um how well it's done there so there are some schools that are really um do a really good job of getting their parents involved and other schools just need some work so just just a comment that um brought our rating down a little bit so that was the parent engagement piece this uh priority six is school climate and uh where the requirement is to give a local climate survey at least every other year we give the survey every year twice a year so we definitely meet this requirement and here are some of the results from that survey and this all this information is information i have shared before but just putting it in this slide is part of the priority presentation so in terms of school safety and connectedness
when it comes to parents um 91 of parents believe that schools are safe 94 believe their child feels welcomed by school staff and then 95 percent have a fair feel a sense of belonging in our district and then when it comes to uh school safety and connectedness for our um our students um i broke it down between elementary and middle and its students feel that schools are safe a strong teacher-student relationship feeling a strong sense of belonging and positive school climate thank you barbara i'll turn it back thank you so the last state priority that we report on in the local indicators is the broad course of study and this is really tied to our do our students have access to a variety of course courses that are um that they should have access to
next slide please so this really just kind of gives you a general idea around our first through sixth grade and then our seventh and eighth grade so looking to see what what our students have access to uh in the standard classroom and some of our middle school classes so looking again what i did is i look to see what for example in our middle schools what are some of the additional because a lot of our middle schools provide electives some electives so looking at the visual performing arts some have career technical education classes like mesa um and then what are some of those pieces in elementary that they have so a lot of teachers tie in health to the physical education so it just kind of gives you a broad idea of the core courses
that we have to have next slide so what it talks about also and this is again this these two questions are tied to this the survey that we gave the teachers one is what do they think are the barriers um from that are preventing us and providing a broad course one one thing that i did see continuously is just really honing in on our differentiation strategies that our teachers know how to use in order to make sure that our students at all language levels or all levels have access to the curriculum in the class it's not additional classes it's how to how we're presenting the curriculum so we had a lot of people wanting more support on differentiation techniques the need for a health program that is something that's come up the state does not
have one yet and i know that is one of those ones that they are looking on coming up with an adoption of a framework and that is something that people feel need that is a need technology problems and then they're saying that books are computer access at home and they were talking about books to read at home so um that is one of the areas they thought was a barrier some revisions and decisions based on what the feedback that we received is that we're building out additional electives where possible we are creating master schedules that have more focus on providing access for electives for all our students so we're having providing opportunities for our students with disability to be able to be mainstreamed and participate in the elective classes we're providing um we have one
of our educational platforms have a has a full college and career exploration models modules that our teachers can use to to do some college and career planning and exploration with their students there was quite a few teachers talking about wanting to have a universal design learning it's a technique that's out there that's very focused on differentiation and how you present um to your students for them to have a better access to the curriculum a lot of the items that they had told us that they thought we needed to do fortunately for us got included in our educator effectiveness grant at the begin when we that we adopted in the middle of this year so we kind of had already listened to them a bit and also just looking at providing using this information to plan
our beginning of the year professional development that we have going on starting august 1st through august 9th and that's really a lot of them around the curricular basis the curricular uh instructional pieces and then planning forward on providing learning opportunities for teachers to come together and collaborate and learn from that so this information has helped guide the work that we're planning moving forward next slide please so just to kind of wrap it up that our next step is to take all of this information and upload it on our dashboard in november and then the public release of the dashboard is in december of this year all right um any any question any uh questions from my colleagues comments thank you i apologize i'm i'm not going to risk turning my camera on the rest of
the night because it gets like unstable so i'm doing you a favor you you just have to see a picture you don't have to see me but um so the couple questions as always first of all thank you uh for the report and so um number one how do we know or do you recollect how many teachers responded last year because this this year i think we got the number was 50. do we know how many responded last year ballpark if anything i am going to i'm going to say last year we had about 90 teachers respond okay um so roughly of yeah half ish dean and do you know when this when did the survey go out when it went out in the springtime because again we had to kind of time it around
the time that we were working on the elk cap so it went out around i think march okay march april yeah okay so um i don't know i guess and your and your expertise and your opinion for that particular part of the information given that roughly half of the resp that's half of the response as last year is how how much validity do you take or or what how do i ask this question in trying to compare last year to this year just in terms of the response rate is it can we as board members um you know assume that it's fairly accurate or would you say that based on the response rate maybe it may have diluted the accuracy of that comparison um i think i do think that the response weight was was
pretty low um remember this was you know after january and february which were a very tough month for our teachers and our staff and everything with the pandemic the the the resurgence of of covid and people just at the stress level i mean i think it was um i think it would we had we done it at a different time if we had had the opportunity to do it later if we probably would have getting a lot more responses it was i might personally feel okay so is it is it's not necessarily then um administered like in a regular manner every year it's kind of based on the environment of the everything going on at that time yes and we used to be we used to be we used to do it in the fall
but just last year was the first year that the state changed it to where we have to do this piece during the adoption of the loc of the lcap so that changes uh you know changes i think everybody i think everybody responds differently depending on what's happening and in their lives and their worlds at that moment okay um thank you for that and then i might have missed this do we know how many parents were surveyed i think i saw the students i don't know if i saw the parents yeah i did it was in there let me give you the correct number i must have missed it 1 567 parents and that was less than last year um the students and staff that responded were actually more than last year um but this year
has been a tough year for getting parents to respond to surveys um so that'll be a goal next year is to get that number back up okay and then the last couple of questions thank you for that um so the the information all the data that you're using to pull from um how does that come to you i think you presented on this a while back about the the platforms that we use and how the reporting looks but i i don't quite recall is it like in the spreadsheet format or do you need to have access to the platform to see the full data set or how how does it come to you so are you talking about the results yes the results of the all these different surveys the results are are on a
platform panorama they have their own platform and um the results are generated there and then there are several reports that we can pull um from that platform to um to analyze um and so there's reports for the teacher survey there are i mean the staff survey there are reports for the parent survey and for the student survey there are reports um for schools every school has their own report that they can also look at and analyze um so it is actually very informative so i wonder and this might be a question for dr bauer i'm just wondering um for you know sometimes i'm kind of a little bit of a data nerd or i enjoy looking at that kind of stuff and so in order for the board to have access to the full data
when we get these results um would it be something as easy as sending us like a spreadsheet version of the results or whatever kind of report i don't know if they allow you to export it into some kind of format but i particularly would be interested just as you talked about miss garcia and in those different areas parents teachers and students and also at the site level those would be interesting for me to look at and would inform me a little bit um i think so i guess the question is what would be the best way for the board to have access to the full data set or the results we can send i can i can work with sandra to see to send the raw data okay awesome okay well thank you both once
again um and yes that's it thank you and i just wanted to uh share with everybody that once i like i always do when i share with one of the trustees the rest of you are gonna get the copy soft copy please remember travis um in the so i noticed that they had technology so thank you sandra and barbara for the presentation and all the work um what measures will the district be taking to improve the technology for the students like for example this week in our area the internet was off and on um is this a conversation that i should ask offline or is there something new that the i.t department is going to try or should i address this question to dr bauer yeah i i will follow up with you specifically about
technology travis this one if you notice it's very focused on school climate it's very focused on kind of the feelings of our audience right in terms of our schools in general so access to technology specifically you and i can have that conversation and i will definitely share that with the rest of the boards um we are just so that you know and so that the public knows we're standing in a very good way right now every we have a a device per every student in the district uh at connectivity we are in a very good place as well sometimes what we cannot control it's kind of like what you were experiencing it earlier on right and during our one-on-one when you said you know my the internet in my house is not working uh trustee
vegeta shared that with me the same day so those are things that are not something that the district can control because those are uh provider issues but in terms of access and and providing um these kinds of resources for our students and our families we're very um proud that we are able to to support our families and our students on that further questions comments all right i'll wrap up with my comments i just want to thank you for the work uh that goes into these reports i know that um getting the attention of people while so many things are going on it's very difficult and i appreciate the work that's been done you know that was like parents although the number is less than last year it's still a significant number um if we were
to add completely randomness to that it would be way over what was necessary to get a validity or uh within like three percent margin of error uh so you know it's it's a big chunk of the people and um i'm very appreciative of the information that we're getting because i know that it it it's given us a clear picture um all right thank you very much uh we're gonna go ahead and move on china 7.01 i just wanted to say one more thing so i know that we are all hopeful for the end of the pandemic but i am very hopeful for the end of the plan democrat which is something that my colleagues are calling it we have written so many plans this past two years it's like can we please be done with
all these plans but i just thought it would end with a joke that no child left behind me thank you all right um 7.01 uh approved classifies those two pay rates do we have a motion for that item motion to approve motion by vice president bomb do i have a second have a second for our subject okay all right uh by vice president found second by board do we have public comments no public comment in the senate mr board president all right um there's no further comments from my colleagues and i'll go ahead and call you to see you board vice president fun aye board member she excused herself for a little bit all right um you know how long maybe we could just wait i don't want to move along with that the substitutes
