Welcome to the 2026 Western High School commencement ceremony. My name is Aaron Alamo and I will be your master of ceremonies. Today is a special day and one we are excited to celebrate together. This ceremony is both joyous and solemn occasion. Please let us remember to be courteous to those around us. We need to be respectful to our seniors during the ceremony, so no air horns or noise makers. Please remain seated while filming or taking photos and remember to keep the recording device at chest level to not impede the vision of others seated around you. Please keep
the aisle or walkway open throughout the ceremony. Today's ceremony is being live streamed and will remain on the district's YouTube channel to view at your convenience. It is so great that we can be together to celebrate the class of 2026. Without further ado, let us begin. I'll be leading you in the Pledge of Allegiance. Please stand. Please place your right hand over your hearts. Ready? Begin. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Please join me in showing our appreciation to all dignitaries and guests for participating in the 2026 Western High School Graduation Ceremony. Please welcome our first senior speaker, Betsy Hernandez. >> [screaming] >> Good evening, staff, family, friends, and faculty. But most importantly, class of 2026. My name is Betsy Hernandez, and it is an honor to stand before you today. This moment is more than a graduation. It is a celebration of everything we have overcome, learned, and achieved together. First, I want to thank our teachers, counselors, and staff for the time, patience, support, and dedication you have
given us, even in times we didn't believe in ourselves. You believe in our potential, pushed us to do our best, and helped us guide through every challenge. To my classmates, today belongs to all of us. We each come here We each came here with different stories, struggles, and dreams. Yet, somehow we became one class connected through shared experience, late nights, laughter, and moments that we will carry on forever. You need to know where you come from to know where you are going. These words remind us that our roots are the foundation of our future. Where we come from is nothing something to leave behind. It is something to carry with pride. Many of our families gave up so much so we could have the opportunities they never had. And because of them, we stand here
today. Before I close off, I want to thank the two most important people in my life who made everything possible, my parents. Class of 2026, go after what inspires you. Put in the work and trust yourself every step of the way. Congratulations, class of 2026. Today proves how far we've come, but it also reminds us of how far we can still go. Thank you. >> [cheering] [applause] >> Thank you so much, Betsy. I would now like to introduce our next senior speaker, Jessica Yu. >> [screaming] >> AND WE LOVE YOU, JESS. WE LOVE YOU, JESS. GOOD EVENING, esteemed staff, friends and families, and of course, our Western class of 2026 soon-to-be graduates. How lucky we are to be standing here today, surrounded by such a beautiful scenery, celebrating a moment that we once thought was
so far away. It truly is so hard to believe how fast our four years here have gone. We've always heard, "High school flies by so fast." And now, as we're here today, about to flip our tassels, we realize just how true that is. Our journey, though, is different from any other. We experienced challenges entering high school that no other class has had to face. No, we are not labeled as the COVID class, but we lived through it in our own way. In sixth and seventh grade, we spent hours learning through our screens. In eighth grade, we returned to a sense of normalcy. But it was different. We hid behind masks and stepped onto campus both excited, yet unsure on how to reconnect. And then came ninth grade. Not only were we just starting our very
first year of high school, but we were also still adjusting to a completely changed world. Despite all the uncertainty, we found ourselves. May it be a club or an organization, we all discovered something that we called our safe space. As our senior quote says, "You need to know where you are going to know where you come from." And all that we have experienced here, every obstacle, every memory, every moment of growth has shaped our path ahead of us. For me, personally, Western has changed me a way that I would have never expected. I used to be shy, hiding behind my parents' legs, avoiding speaking in front of people at all costs. But through Western, especially ASB, I found the courage I always had inside of me. And now as I stand here today, I can
truly see how much I've grown. And as these last few weeks have flown by, I know all of us have taken the time to reflect on how much we've grown, too. Western is often underestimated, but we know the truth. Our ASB may be small, but we dominate at camp. Our cheer team wins national championships, our band never fails to impress, our athletes go far in CIF, and this class especially has been accepted into so many incredible colleges. No matter what you are involved in here at Western, this is where we all begin. As we enter this next chapter of our lives, I hope that we all take a little bit of Western High School with us and transform it into our future. Congratulations to the class of 2026, Western. We did it. >> [cheering] [applause]
>> Thank you, Jessica. I would now like to introduce our principal, Ms. Lorena Moreno. >> [screaming] [applause] >> Great job. Nice job, ladies. Friends, family, faculty, AUHSD Board of Trustees, and most importantly, to the class of 2026. This class holds a special significance for me. 4 years ago, as you walked through these doors as freshmen, I was beginning my own journey here as a new principal of Western High School. We started this chapter together, learning and growing side by side, and it is my honor to finish it with you today. Look around. Take a second to really see the people sitting next to you. For years, you've shared hallways, late night study sessions, and many fun events. You have grown up together, and today you prepare to grow apart. Not in spirit, but in your
journeys. To know where you come from isn't just about a hometown or a zip code. It's about the people who stayed up late helping you with math problems you didn't understand. It's about the teachers who saw potential when you perhaps doubted yourself. It's about the culture, the struggles, and the triumphs of those who walked before us. Our roots are the anchor that keep us steady when the world gets loud. And the world is really loud right now. The world is seeing so much chaos, but it is in this very chaos that your class holds a powerful metaphor, the butterfly. As freshmen, you entered a complex and changing world. You have navigated uncertainty, transforming yourselves through effort and grace, much like the butterfly emerging from its chrysalis. Like that butterfly, you are a symbol of beautiful,
resilient transformation amidst the storm. Your time is here. Your time in the chrysalis of Western High School has been the source of your values, the internal compass that tells you right from wrong when there's no one around you. The four-year preparation has given you the beautiful, hard-earned wings that are now ready for flight. As we step into 2026 and beyond, where you are going is that part and it's entirely up to you. As you prepare to take the flight and soar beyond these doors, carry the strength of your history with you. Fly with pride. Your history is the fuel of your growth. Never hide the story they gave you wings. Fly with purpose. Use the lessons of your past as a steady current that guide your migration towards new adventures. Fly with courage. Trust the
vibrant colors of your dreams to lead you to horizons no one ever expected you to reach. Class of 2026, you have emerged from the chrysalis and are ready for flight. We know where we've been and now, with your beautiful, hard-earned wings, there is no limit to where you could fly. Congratulations, class of 2026. >> [cheering and applause] >> And now for awarding of the diplomas. I would like to invite invite our Board of trustees and our distinguished distinguished staff who will assist. Raul Ruiz and Karen Clark Yamamoto will now read the names of the class of 2026 graduating seniors. Please respect each of our graduates and hold your applause until all of the names have been read. >> [cheering] [screaming] >> Betsy Hernandez >> [screaming] >> Aaron Alamo >> [screaming] >> Jessica Jamin Yu >>
