e e e I appreciate it uh we just wanted to get started we have a full agenda I know everyone's buzzing everybody's excited so uh Welcome to our um Board of Trustees meeting for Thursday July 18th 2024 and we will begin with our Pledge of Allegiance and moment of silence please stand place your right hand over your heart ready begin I pledge aliance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liy and justice for all not many people know or understand the public education system and that July is the beginning of our new year so happy new school year uh so a lot has been said about the recent act of violence against a prominent figure we as a nation

as a people must condemn this act and teach that it's wrong to take into our hands the lives of others it is also wrong to promote hate against anyone whether we disagree on politics religion or race we are divided now and we do not have courageous conversations we assume we accuse and we do not ask so we need to do better we are the grown-ups and we can disagree but we must seek to understand in that disagreement so as we begin this new school year let us model democracy and continue to support our students with Civic engagement opportunities and with each other in our absolutely wonderful ahsd School District thank you and now we will hear uh from our newly elected Clerk of the board of Trustees Miss Guerrero she will report actions taken during

start my 40th year in this district and I've I love this District I've been able to serve in a lot of different capacities and uh starting out as a teacher at Kennedy then uh going over to Oxford when it first opened the second year it opened and um people know me as uh a music teacher um but I'm proud I mean I learned a lot of things from all those years and u i retired in 2017 and became the uh Ambassador advisor and uh the ambassadors I have a couple of my ambassadors here uh alumni so thank you for coming I have my family here I have uh my niece Christa my nephew um Tim my sister Patty and my sister Terry Cliff isi longtime alumni of Kennedy High School and family friend uh some

really incredible friends of mine uh Meredith Massie Gideon Massie and Jill and Mike sharpless um without the support of all the people that I see in this room throughout the years um my goal here is just to continue to serve the students and families here in the district and I want to thank you for giving me this opportunity to do that thank you and if you will all join us in The District Lounge we'll have a reception e e e all right we are going to reconvene our meeting thank you everyone and congratulations again to Mr Ron hosi so item nine is a resolution so resolution number 2024 sl25 db-01 ordering an election and establishing specifications of the election order this is an action item moved and seconded uh is is there anyone that wishes

to uh ask questions about this item we have our bond folks here there are any questions I was just going to ask if we can get an overview uh maybe like a short synopsis of the language um and any of the bond any information you could share about the bond polling good evening my name is David Koka from the law firm of straddling yoka Carlson and Roth I'm happy to answer questions about the resolution there's a few things in it that I'll just point out to you that are highlights I think the first is on page four of the resolution there's a series of findings that the district's board is agreeing to that's found in section three ghi J and K each of those items are recommendations by the Orange County taxpayers Association is car

characteristics of a financially responsible Bond measure and they're in the resolution to reflect the fact that this transaction is intended to be fiscally responsible and uh meet the standards that the Orange County taxpayers Association has set the other thing that I want to point out to you is that um the legal obligation to place a bond measure on the ballot is to deliver an election order to the county register our voters office and in this County the deadline is tomorrow it normally is August the 9th but Orange County has an earlier deadline than what the statute requires this resolution is the form of election order so this is the legal document and it has to be approved by 2third vote of the board because the passage rate for voter approval is 55% and the tradeoff

is 2third of the board has to approve the measure that will be then voted on and approved by at least 55% of the registered voters in the district exhibit a of the resolution is the 75w ballot question so this is what voters are going to vote yes or no on so the rule regarding the ballot question is that it has to be a single sentence ending in a question mark it has to include the name of the district the purpose of the measure the maximum interest rate on the bonds the uh level of the tax rate the duration of the tax rate and the aggregate amount of repayment that would be obligated to be made in fulfillment of the issuing all of the $496 Million worth of bonds so that's a lot of requirements in

a single sentence the most important words I think are found in the second line the words repair construct acquire classrooms science labs facilities career technology sites and Equipment that's the legal Authority that you need to undertake really all of your projects all of your project should fit in that catchphrase Proposition 39 that allows the vote to be passed at a 55% level requires that the voters see a project list the project list is exhibit B to the resolution it's going to be printed in its entirety just as the board approves it and it identifies types of projects is which is what the legal requirement is the description of the types of projects that will be undertaken by the district we've read through all your facility plans and your staff has scrutinized this project list and

everything that you've ever discussed is included as an authorized project it's not not a priority list it doesn't suggest what projects you might do first last or never get to but it's the range of authorized projects and if the election is successful and you ultimately sell bonds the board will decide then how it's going to prioritize the purposes of the measure but everything that you can imagine needing to be done is authorized to be done and your decision later will be made as to the specifics as to how money gets spent so that's the bond project list you'll see some projects are in bold some projects are emphasized by a bullet point and some types of projects are described in the lengthly paragraph on B3 and B4 they all have the same legal standing it

doesn't matter whether one's higher profile or not um so with that I'm happy to answer any specific questions about the resolution or have Chad talk to you about your bond rating and the financial aspects uh yes I want to hear about our bond ratings but before that could you explain um because uh we know that there may be a bond another bond for the state how does that affect uh our school district well I'm not a polling expert but I so I will repeat to you what I have heard other experts in the field say and that is a state bond is more likely than not to help school distri with local Bond measures then hurt in part because there'll be a lot of publicity associated with that measure that underscores the need that school

districts have for facility funds and that will only help local measures because voters tend to support local measures and the more they hear about the need need that school districts have for funds the more inclined they are to support local Bond measures and that the state uh Bond helps us to um kind of match uh matching funds it does and um I think some may be confused and may think they're going to get somehow taxed on the state um yeah state general obligation bonds are not paid by an adval property tax against property of residents of the district District they're paid from the from the state's general operating budget so it's quite a different source of security for those bonds than for yours but I also if the state Bond passes and the local Bond

passes the district will be in a position to leverage that State uh Bond money it certainly will and that's reflected in the resolution that that will be one way in which you can stretch your bond dollars to go much much fur further and you probably wouldn't qualify for State matching funds unless you had a local Bond measure so to access that state funds is critically important that this measure pass for you because you will get two or three times the bang for your dollar would you repeat that one more time because people will say well why don't you just get the money from the state instead of the state has eligibility requirements for who qualifies for matching funds and first in line are for those those districts whose local voters have supported a local Bond

measure so that the the local community can pay a share of the cost and once the state sees that a share is being assumed by the local community they will match those dollars with State bond funds but if you don't have a local match then you will be so low on the priority list that you would never expect to receive any money whatsoever from the state thank you any other questions for this just to reaffirm that basically the only way that a school district can um improve campuses facilities or build new buildings is by having a bond because the state does not furnish um enough money in our budget to do so is that that's absolutely correct and that is the the Big Driver for all school districts up and down the state to ask

their local community to support their schools because the state is not providing the funding uh to any degree to make the facility needs uh up to 21st century standards you thank you can we hear about the bond ratings yes and um good evening board my name is Chad Wang with Kent and in regards to the district's credit ratings if bonds are ultimately approved and issued the district would be able to issue them at quite favorable interest rates there are three major rating agencies Moody's sandard pores and fit you might recall when we were last up here with the district's Bond refinancing the district had a double A2 credit rating with a stable Outlook through the efforts of superintendent matsuda and Dr nin who presented the credit profile to Moody's the credit rating of a A2

was affirmed but the Outlook was changed upwards to a positive outlook and that certainly helped our refinancing where the original estimate was for $3.6 million in taxpayer savings when all was said and done that number finished north of about $4.3 million of savings and so we would expect to see that similar result for any new bonds that might be issued where you would have a favorable interest rate that is the Moody side a couple of weeks ago another credit rating agency fit ratings upgraded the district's underlying credit rating from double A minus to Able a and um both Moody and fit do note the district for um specifically Moody said its improved financial position continued strong financial management and prudent fiscal practices so the district's doing everything right um to benefit taxpayers through low borrowing

cost by way of its very very strong credit ratings thank you any other questions that's just excellent news to hear thank you thank you CH thank you right any further questions or comments from the board uh I just wanted to say uh you know in looking through um all the language I'm I'm just reminded um uh about our study that we did uh years ago and we have about $3 billion uh need in our district and we've um although you see wonderful things in our district we've just kind of scratched the surface so there still is need and um I know Patty and the team have done everything that they can to stretch all those dollars and um and uh you know to make our our sites um beautiful but there still is great need

we still have a lot of repairs to do a lot of the work um uh that we need is is underground too so uh we really need to um um to really asked the public to support um to support us in this uh another thing um that is always uh a a safeguard is that uh in going for for this Bond we have to have uh citizens oversight committee that's uh you know separate from from uh from us they go over the financial uh part of it and we have um wonderful folks that sit on that committee and we receive um reports that are sent that are given to us but they're also uh adjudicated and audited as as well um and a lot of the safeguards that um the gentleman was talking about in

here you know we have to um maintain a reserve of two to 3% of our general General funds um we when we um hire folks uh there's no payto playay uh uh Antics on here we have to go uh sell our bonds at competitive sales um there's so many uh safeguards uh that the district has to uphold to and we've really done a fantastic job we usually um finish our projects on time and on budget and most the times uh many times uh under budget uh so I have uh the greatest admiration for our team and um the greatest faith that um if we pass this um bond that we will do we will do well with the um faith of the taxpayers money I'd like to make a comment I'm kind of doubling what

I said at a former meeting that these bonds improving our schools keeps the value of our homes up one of the first things that people do when they are moving to a new community is to look at the schools and I can tell you that I was extremely disappointed I had no choice about moving here it was turned out to be a wonderful plus but the point was as I came on the board and I went to every school and every bathroom and it wasn't acceptable to me and it certainly isn't what i' uh experienced when I was growing up in Northern California so the second Bond was a second blessing and this third Bond Bond I think is a necessity because we have to think of ourselves our property values and our children's education

in the future of the community so I hope this is going to pass because it's definitely needed thank you all right anyone else okay with that a roll call vote Mr hosi I Mr O'Neal I I miss Smith yes I she's eager Miss Guerrero I and I vote I All Right Moving On on to oh thank you [Applause] sh a report of the associations have stud no I we don't um jennif Jennifer Cai thank you good evening Madame President Randall tryo Board of Trustees superintendent matsuda executive cabinets students parents and school Community joining us in person and online we would like to express our sincere congratulations to trustee hosi on his appointment to the board congratulations also to the newly appointed administrators we look forward to working with you I am pleased to present this

this effort reflects our commitment to ensuring every student has the resources they need to succeed and graduate we are poised for a successful school year filled with growth and achievement for all our students thank you for your continued support let's make this a great year thank you thank you Britney Britney um would you happen to know uh sorry I don't mean to put you on the spot uh would you just happen to know if uh how many students that we had that matriculated over the summer would you have that data that what do you mean by m the graduated like they had our final numbers estimation I think we're at like a 96% graduation rate right no our summer grad numbers yeah 55 all right still awesome awesome sorry I didn't mean to put you

on the spot thank you grad ear not doesn't factor in oh all right more is good thank you all right did I um Miss anyone else all right moving on to our public comments okay uh Germain Newman [Applause] welcome jerine thank you thank you board um over the past four months I have spoken to the in front of this board numerous me issues I want to go on the record that I've only received one response from the board to my emails that I've sent to our board in talking to other people parents teachers students and community members they've also said they've submitted several emails to our board um and when I review our board meeting minutes there is no record of these emails and particularly was uh June 6 board meeting regarding U Mr matsuda's

contract extension why is the board not acknowledging Our Community Voices how do we even know that you are reading or Recon or seeing our emails how do we know like there's any acknowledgement of these documents is the in administration even Prov providing these to you I'm asking our board to stand by our April 2019 Declaration on transparency and accountability and start recognizing our community's emails and letters on matters to the board I would also like to question our District's decision to hold multiple public hearings tonight without adequate communication you have a whole team of social media people faces Community Schools Personnel working all summer long and yet yet the district has chose to put these issues on the agenda with only notification in the agenda notice of public hearings both the public hearings on statutory

school fees item 12.2 and public hearing on ethic studies courses item 12.4 Merit their own individual hearings and adequate public advertising of these hearings I call on this board to table both items 12 .2 and 12.4 until proper public notice can be done and to hold the hearing separately so adequate time to president to present them to the community and this board can digest the important critical topics to our community our District's decision to bury both items in an agenda over 700 pages long may be a violation of our California laws and clearly shows our District's lack of care and compassion for our community a proper hearing needs to be held especially considering V raising fees on our homeowners and other community members I would also like to bring to um the board to intercede

on the district's decision to close our Arabic language program at Orange View High School and orange view Junior High and Western High School we have a vital important arabic speaking community in Anaheim our district is on the Forefront World languages this is critical to our community and stands by our community schools commitment we are spending money used for LLC funds to fund um two Consultants INF flection and mind kind Institute this is over $150,000 this can easily be Reed to support our English Learners who are currently in the Arabic learning language program and support our community schools in building a stronger Community which would show the intention and the support of this school district in our community that's vital to us thank you Mr M okay moving on to Dr Paulo mollus all right good

evening everybody board president Randall tro uh esteemed board members uh cabinet and everybody on YouTube uh as some of you may know my name is Paula mallus former student uh former teacher here in ahsd uh board member with Anaheim elementary school district and professor at Cal State LA but tonight I'm going to wear a different hat I'm going to wear a hat of that of an uncle I'm very proud to have uh two amazing nephews and nieces that are going to be attending uh one's currently a sophomore right now at Lera high school he also plays basketball uh props to coach a uh I also have a niece that's going to be attending as a freshman at Lera as well so our family is very excited um I just want to share that I'm beyond

proud of this District uh for adopting resolution 20202 one- e22 supporting the development of ethnic studies curricula and implementation of the ethnic studies graduation requirement I'm also incredibly proud of your leadership team in Ed division Dr freed uh Carolyn Torres Ruben patino Carlos Hernandez just to name a few for their leadership in training the many Educators who are and who will be teaching this powerful and necessary curriculum and I've seen some of the curriculum in wow talk about college readiness I mean some of these classes are already College college level um I mean the readings wow as an uncle okay I'm incredibly grateful that my nieces and nephews will have the opportunity to take this course or these any of these courses to see themselves in the curriculum to be given these Civic tools necessary

to make transformative and sustaining change not only in their lives but that of our community they are the future of this great nation a nation that is like you shared earlier unfortunately more divided than we have ever been but these courses gives my family hope because we know that when taught right ethnic studies can build Bridges between everyone it saves lives and we are forever grateful for this District for providing this opportunity for our kids my nephew Hudson uh just graduated from Lera and we are so proud of him he will be attending college next month and will be pursuing a degree in film he once shared with me one of his favorite classes and that class was ethnic studies he shared with me and I quote him Uncle Paulo ethnic studies made me love

reading and learning again it was one of my favorite class class I also want to share that at Anaheim elementary we do have a task force I know that ethnic studies isn't a graduation requirement for the elementary level but since 2020 uh our district has been working hard on Crest uh cultur responsive teaching uh and ethnic studies task force um I do have some copies of some of our Frameworks and some of our goals I know that some of the staff here at ahsd has also been in collaboration with our curriculum social studies Specialists so I'd love to share this with the board and thank you for time I hope you having a great amazing school year thank you thank you truste Andrew would you like to speak now or would you wait like to

wait till item this item comes up on 12.4 okay welcome all right good even evening it's actually been exactly a year since I was first up here advocating for regalia so since then we've seen advancements in school regalia the prevention of teacher layoffs and more District oversight I now stand here before you advocating for the Arabic program and defending the brave students who have spoken out and asked you to reconsider your decision and stance on orange View and Western High School's Arabic program the Arabic program allows students of Arabic backgrounds to explore not only their background and culture but their ethnicity one of my favorite sayings is one needs to know where they're from in order to know where they're going with the Arabic program students are able to learn not only the Arabic language

but also the traditions and culture cultural values of the Middle East at the last board meeting Dr Renee Bryant stated that in 2017 we had many refugees and immigrants arriving from the Middle East that was the reason we introduced and kept the Arabic program well today in 2024 we have actually seen a rise in anti-palestinian and anti-muslim hate incidents some of these incidents have been classified as hate crimes now back in 2017 it was what we did to help our recent arrivals but now more than ever we need to support this community and how will we create awareness during these rough times than with that Arabic program now Dr Bryant also stated that the regular class load for a teacher is about 190 students however I don't believe that's the same workload for a Cambridge

ritual Academy look this isn't an equity issue but if it was we would look at class sizes at CVA and the numbers just don't look right we pride ourselves in Innovation I know matsuda and and Marie have both said that there's no one doing it quite like us and that's only that is true in the case of the Arabic program as it is the only one in the county now how in Innovative would getting rid of the only Arabic program in Orange County be now I would like to turn everyone's attention to item 12.4 the development of ethnic studies curriculum and the implementation of ethnic studies courses as a graduation requirement beginning with the class of 2026 a possible solution to our situation is creating an Arabic ethnic studies course expanding this program that students

are already passionate about I think will will be beneficial I do hope that you listen to these passionate students I also cannot stress the importance of ethnic studies I was able to be a member and vice president of the Anaheim spent program that's where I learned about my my Heritage and my culture additionally I took a Spanish speakers ethnic studies class where I also learned more about my Cultura as I like to say it in many ways it was those courses that have guided me in my Endeavors and fueled my passion for advocacy and championing the will of the people my reasoning for coming out to these school board meetings and being an activist is simple a phrase that my pointed teacher Miss King and Spanish teacher seor always proudly said last time I spoke

IAL I talked about the importance and the beauty of the First Amendment where my family comes from that doesn't exists if I spoke out called out a governing body or advocated for the will of of the people there would be missing person Flyers all around me in the state of meakan I'm here because your community deserves what they ask for I hope for the sake of those chairs that they've put you in you give them exactly that thank you thank you andreww okay uh moving on to item 12.1 resolution number 2024 sl25 db-02 signature authorization action item so moved second okay moved and seconded any questions or comments on this item uh I just wanted to point out uh I thank you for giving us the the um diagram of the signature authorization and just

so that was very nice to see um and uh assistant superintendent I I'm going to vote Yes on all of these items but um three I would like if you could ask them to more details they're they're a little vague um and so just for I think purposes of uh you know for for us to understand um some of them we need to know the wise in the house and actually what um like I think uh Dungeons and Dragons is great but I would like to know uh why that that's um and the chess club um I the why behind what's the importance of the chess and playing chess I think that would um just expand on on that um and then the um the Kennedy Girls Athletic Association I just wanted a little bit

more uh detail on on on what that's going to provide for that club we can do that we can make sure in our application that we we add a piece where it's it's part of the application that they have to go deeper with not only the what it is but the why behind it yeah I think so Dr freed i' also want to I want to question like some of the activities for the mental health club just to make sure that we're in in kind of in a you know I mean like because I I know that some schools have like Nami and there's different things so um does Dr Cruz kind of like and her team of they're often connected to all the clubs that are connected to mental health they're supporting a lot

of the work matter of fact under her leadership right we've been trying to expand the mental health clubs where students are supporting other students they're not counseling other students but they it's like peer support with adults M she usually um appears a couple of times and and and speaks to the clubs all right yes um Mr O'Neal these clubs are amazing and Guero thank you all right all in favor hi 12.15 Revis board policy 616- R sexual harassment employees and applicants first and final reading action item no moved second moveed the second and any questions or comments on this okay seeing none all in favor I I okay moving on to our consent calendar does anyone have anything to pull uh ZZ 1311 and 1321 okay anyone else move for the balance second and second

moved and seconded I think my question was answered on the one that I wanted to pull all right uh 132 for me so um all in favor for the balance I I okay uh 132 motion so moved second second okay I just wanted to um um say it's really great to have Colleen uh back helping us out she is um the best of the best and um so um really glad to see her name just to uh talk to uh let um our newest uh trustee uh actually Colleen actually worked in our district for an interim period of time so she is highly qualified a third time I think coming in as a consultant yeah okay uh and that's all I wanted to say on that so all in favor I I okay uh 1310

ZZ 1311 1321 pull two one off do do the other two first oh one at a time 13.10 ZZ and 11 and 1311 yeah so moved second okay all in favor I I oppose abstention I okay 1321 Move Motion second yeah I just like uh Dr freed if you can give us a little um more information on what the um the project rebound is oh he's not even here I didn't look up I think Robert can you oh Robert can you uh uh talk a little bit about project rebound and what what it's about oh here is well it's up to either one of you the question is on Project rebound yes sorry sorry um so project rebound you want to know a little more about the a little bit more about it so actually

we were very fortuned I know she's not in here but Cara Perez one of our assistant principles at Anaheim High School uh she uh found the the program and found as she was looking more into it that is connected to Cal State foron the program is designed to really support um incarcerated youth uh either students who have been incarcerated or students who are at risk for being incarcerated so um typically the schools have programs like with neutral ground which does a lot of Behavioral and social supports for students who are either have been incarcerated or at risk with Cal for project rebound is going to do is really support the academic support for those students and um what's really neat about this program is Cal State flon uh is wanting to partner with Anaheim is

who found the program to to kind of pilot this project but then they also have waivers and I didn't know this but um you know to get into Cal State floron you have to be a through G um and a lot of the students who've been incarcerated not to stereotype but many of them are not a a through G right because they haven't done well at school and they've been in trouble um so there's an actual waiver program at calate flon where you can wave it's very small but they can they can wave students who haven't yet made a through G but have gone through certain programs to demonstrate their capability of being successful at the University and So Cal flon will wave the students that they that they work with at Anaheim who are

demonstrating throughout this process and the Cal flon project rebound focuses on the academic support and journey they provide tutors and different things and working closely with the school so it's pretty unique but pretty neat project to really give students who sometimes feel hopeless um hope uh especially when most students right who are not a through G their their only course of of action to go to a university is really to start at the community college um these students have really been given a a tremendous opportunity that through the program they can go straight to a four-year University specifically Cal State Forton um if they take advantage of the program and they get the support that project rebound offers it's pretty neat yeah so we're not doing this project doesn't do anything with incarcerated students I

think formally incarcerated so when they're in they're in the system I don't believe they're able to work with the students at that time but when they are released that's why it's project rebound they're helping the students rebound from whatever choices they made that landed them in prison does the district know of any programs that uh are used for the currently incarcerated students to help them do exactly what this program is doing I'm not aware of any but I we can look into it but I'm I'm the Orange County Department of Ed there that is yeah there are there are programs that I think push in into um our prison system to work with with juveniles and youth but um they they they push in a juvenile hall but that one would be neutral ground um

they they they'll Provide support and work with our incarcerated you that are in juvenile hall um but as far as this type of support to get them connected to the universities and get them get get the waiver to get them in I mean that that's not while in juvenile hall I think that's more when they come out and need to come back to the to you a public institution and and you know obviously complete their their High School requirements okay okay and Anaheim will work obviously when students are returning back from being incarcerated um we know who they are we can provide that support but they will work with Anaheim and identifying students with neutral ground support um students who may be um like at risk because of just patterns of of some of the

choices they've been making uh to be able to read this kind of support so they can hopefully wean themselves off that path more onto a productive path so it's an exciting opportunity and as the board may recall this was brought to you um I think an earlier board meeting but Cal State floor had requested to submit it again with a different contract so the the content isn't really different it's just the contract is different um so that's why we're asking you to re-approve this under the new contract okay thank you okay so uh all in favor of this item I okay moving on to superintendent and staff report uh I just want to commend the uh principls and the all the sites with their site teams including the uh many amazing uh teacher leaders that

were in attendance today at the leadership advance I want to also commend uh Dr freed and his team uh with the Ed division uh really setting it setting a great tone for the year in terms of our school opening and as everybody knows uh we uh we have part two tomorrow we're excited about looking forward to that thank you and for my report I just want to kind of um thank the board for for being there this morning and in some cases even this afternoon with um our teams they I don't know how much you realize how they appreciate when you come and are part of their work so they feel supported and just thank you I also want to share that um next week um we have our annual Gear Up trip so it's

a smaller team much smaller team these are really confined to our Gear Up schools we have our six high schools um Western Center Western East high schools are going to be going to Washington DC where we'll be part of the National inep Conference uh this this upcoming week and I'm really also proud we have three presentations um that will be given while we're in uh DC um just because of the work that we've been doing they've they year after year they ask us to present uh the great work that we're doing and really highlight our partnership with Cal State flon super excited about that um and also as you know our superintendent uh Mike serves on the nsep board so we're very fortunate um that he's a part of that process as well so that's

next week and I know Robert has an update when you get to him so and those are granted funds so those are Grant funds so yeah so Grant covers the trip the travel costs along with with all the supports and services they provide to Gear Up schools uh and they track students throughout their grade path so anyone who goes it's work work work you do thank you yeah I just like would like to uh congratulate um all of our new administrative appointees and um very proud of them for the work that they've done to get to this stage um of their career and and the the the work that they did to get through the the rigorous uh interview process um and also to just to um wish all of our ad administrative team the

very best as we start this new school year and you have an announcement about your baby boy my my baby boy was married a few weeks [Applause] ago Nancy yes so um we will be having our third annual Business Services professional development day next Tuesday so we have different guest speakers coming to our event and um some highlights of uh what we have done and as well introduce some of the new folks we do have a very big department and so a lot of times we're in different um areas and so this is one one time the year that we get together um and meet as well so you are more than welcome to join us next Tuesday thank you and you have a retirement presentation as far yes yes so we uh we have

Kel Pur coming uh they were here last year and um staff loved that so um they ask us we can bring them back to do have cover other topics more in depth so um it will be a great presentation so we want to make sure people understand how to uh you know re AO different things and stuff like that so that's something to benefit our employees thank you you Carl uh just briefly I did want to um thank Tina Carpenter who is in our audience tonight she's a program specialist in special youth services and was uh instrumental in the transition partnership participation grant that was approved tonight uh she's been doing some tremendous work on the alternative diploma as well over the last uh year or so so um her efforts have been tremendous and

are really helping out so thank you Tina thank you just wanted to again just piggy back off of what superintendent suda was mentioning are and Dr freed just our our our staff our site leadership teams um were hard at work already day one of uh leadership Advance a lot of folks were in the room for each site administrators uh classified staff faces uh Community School coordinators um teachers teacher leaders counselors so they were all hard at work and really revisiting their agendas for day one and day two as as we're lesson three weeks away from opening our schools so wishing them all the luck in the world and it's going to be a great opening in our 24 25 school year and and just so we all know there's already a lot of staff that

are hard at work um in the summer as leading up to opening day um all of our programs are our performing narts programs are bands and are out there practicing and getting ready for for opening season and you know I was just talking to coach L who's a a cross country coach for girls over at an high school she just came back from taking 14 girls to Big Bear to train and for most of them is their first time to Big Bear so so a lot of our coaches and a lot of our teachers and a lot of our staff both certificate and classified are already working hard to to prepare for for the fall so good luck to everyone all right thank you Mr hosi wow so um I am so privileged after being

in this District for 40 years I am still learning about so many things that our district is doing and I have gotten to go to so many events uh just this first month um the summer uh Language Academy uh was held on the 27th at Savannah um I also went to our Personnel Comm Commissioners uh memorial service speed Castillo and an Marie Randle tro uh sang there and did a beautiful job um the summer arts academy um I had to go see both casts because it was double casted so I got to see two performances of The Wizard of Oz and wanted to congratulate Mr bsky and his team um the Orange County United Way youth Career Connections um aim um um program that we have the partnership with uh United Way at Orange Coast

College uh was incredible um we had had a first year um um program called uh the Girls Incorporated at Anaheim high school and um I got to go to that um actually and we're going to try to build that program um a parent invited me to a soccer tournament at so uh between Oxford and Cypress uh it was held at Troy and I thought gosh you know it's they're both schools in my area so I thought I'd go and it was a lot of fun uh to to watch those kids um participate in that um we had the aim final presentation for the Disney Resort we had 15 students that participated in that so we were at at the backstage area in their Auditorium and then the summer internship closing for aim last Friday a

lot of us were there and then oh my goodness I just had the most incredible strawberry pie from our Mech farm from last uh Saturday and that was a lot of fun and then the last couple of days I've been participating in the um orange View and Western consolidation meeting so it's been a really full thing and it's not like I have to go those to those events I get to and I am I feel it a privilege to to represent um the board and area five thank you Mr hosi Mr O'Neal oh Mr hosi welcome officially to the board it's been a pleasure knowing you for many many years and look forward to working with you in the future I want to uh congratulate the um uh Wizard of Oz presentation uh it was

wonderful it was very professional not only the theatrical part but the music part you never knew that they were not professionals back there you couldn't see them but you could hear them so it was wonderful I attended the summer Language Academy showcase at Savannah um the uh I I attended the ocde budget perspectives via zoom and it was so far over my head I didn't understand a lot of what they were doing it was like whoa um but I'm I'm sure that our staff was there had had gone through it or was going through it so I rely on you it was boy um I also attended the Disney aim recognition at Disney and I understand I had to leave right after they they the students presented but they got to go and meet the

president of Disneyland after that president of Disneyland so I think that was uh fantastic and they did that last year also so I think that's a wonderful opportunity for students to not only be uh the interns there and learn from the cast members but then also to be able to interface with the person that is in charge of that whole operation so that's a one in a lifetime opportunity uh attended a board meeting last week uh and also the aim summer leader in internship recognition at uh Kennedy uh attended the Strawberry Festival at the mac and brought home a beautiful basket of fresh picked strawberries that my wife picked and they were just fantastic just can't can't find them that good elsewhere and the new hypotonic hypon hydroponic I knew it was get out eventually

the H hydroponic trailer being able to put out 12,000 plants in five gallons of water a day compared to putting that out over couple acres uh what a I'm looking forward to seeing the end product in about six weeks I think so when we're going to start seeing the end result so I'm that's going to be really something getting out to uh all of our cafeterias throughout the district and be able to feed our kids and with also the learning opportunity behind it and uh this morning uh attended the leadership advance I didn't I wasn't there this afternoon but I thank you for the staff putting it on it it looked like it was going to be a fantastic uh opportunity based upon the morning what I saw and I think that's about it so

thank you thank you Mr Anil Miss Smith I don't have a lot to report I just want to Express gratitude for everybody in this room their job jobs are heavy and I think about the chaos and the tragedy around the world today and we are so blessed to have these wonderful people running our schools building making them better attractive the classrooms nicer and the it that we have I just learned uh during the break that um how many Eric how many students were there repairing the uh in in one room at Brookhurst and that's and they were our students I said oh what college did they come from and this whole thing is such a re extraordinary learning experience and I just want to say thank you to every single person in this room because

you're all important and we're a great family I want to thank you thank you Miss Smith scero thank you um I'll Echo it's been a busy summer not only for all of our staff but our students as well um so some of the summer activities they got to attend um the Anaheim Public Utilities had a meeting honoring our eighth grade student Melanie Gomez K kasas that uh from Orange V jior high school she won the water conservation poster contest test so her art design is going to be on the city of anaheim's water bottle for the entire year um so if you see city of Anaheim water bottle that is our ahsd student um so really excited for her and her family um I also attended the ahsd summer Language Academy showcase and celebration um

I want to thank uh Dr Bryant and her team for all their work that these past four weeks in the summer uh supporting our English language Learners um and all of our students um as well as I want to thank um OC supervisor vient Sero that was our keynote speaker um he really uh serves as a great role model to our students he is the first Bolivian elected official and he spoke about um his experience uh learning his language and re redeveloping his language here when um his family migrated um I also attended the services of a anim High School administrator speed Castillo I also attended the wizard of va summer arts musical want to thank Mr bsky and his team and all of our vapa teachers that helped put that together it was an

amazing show um I also attended the aim summer intership closing ceremony um with I believe over 180 students uh that participated in various interships and it's good to see that our Partnerships continue to grow um I know they also participated with some of our ahc staff I know the IT department and other departments also hosted some of our students that was great to them to have a little background of what uh behind the scenes of what uh our district does um I want to State uh thank Scott Reno and his team uh for their Partnerships in building that and then I also attended the Mac Farm berry festival with u many of my colleagues got to see the new Freight container hydroponic uh container um and I understand that all of the produce there will

be used across our district schools um so all of our schools get to share in that produce so we're very excited for that outcome uh thank you to Sabina and the Mac team uh for supporting that and then I attended the morning portion of leadership evance uh with all of our staff as we prepare for the first day of school August 7th so wishing everyone a great couple of weeks left this summer and looking forward to the start of school year thank you thank you uh so uh I attended a couple of things that um our trustees had already mentioned of course recognizing um Melanie Gomez um with the um the um water conservation contest poster contest um and it was really nice to meet her uh family um and celebrate her the utilities meeting

Public Utilities meeting uh the Disneyland aim program with the student uh presentations um when we talked to the students beforehand um they were a little bit nervous but more so they were um they were sad because they really bonded those six weeks uh with their mentors and um they were tasked with um giving a presentation real world presentation um and it had to involved a service project so they were uh told uh had to um deal with either the public or and the public and uh staff and so um they had to um they had to think about the setup and the cleanup uh uh decorations they had to um figure out who was going to speak entertainment um uh and of course they held it at California Adventure and this is all make believe

um a project but they um it was taken very seriously with the staff I think they're gonna they're going to copy it um but uh they had to each uh student was tasked to be a part of um making that uh presentation in the project and um it was uh very professional um everybody was wowed with it and um they even had to work out the budget um and the students had to uh get up and tell about how much it costs and uh calculate and they were given a budget and uh and then they said well it was really hard to stick to to the budget um but it was a really worthwhile experience for for the 15 15 students um it's taken a long time to get those 15 students there um with

Disney um I think from what they said um they were recruiting more men mentors and um so there might be even more uh next year so that's really good news um and uh they surprise the students going up upstairs to meet uh the president and had to and got to interface and they got to ask him direct questions um and uh he was very enchanted with our students and and very um uh enthralled with with their project um and uh so that was a really fun event of course um the sad passing of espan Castillo um and the service and many of our um employees uh attended um and then I uh uh attended of course the wizard of vas uh Summer vappa Event um and uh students were absolutely amazing and uh a community

event um but tied to one of our um teachers uh she opened a bookstore um and it's called The Untold Story uh Liz graan um that works at Magnolia um opened up a a bookstore and that was Gilbert Gilbert scho I'm sorry what did I what school did I say Magus I said mag sorry Gilbert I Gilbert Gilbert apologize um and uh really really beautiful opening um for her um her bookstore and it's just down the street so you all can um visit that and with that were there any other announcements any other okay um any um suggested uh agenda items Mr O'Neal you're looking no okay um I I'm wondering when uh because we we we see the wonderful vapa event that happened in the summer and with all of the um prop night

monies I'm wondering when uh we're going to get an overview of our um bappa programs when can we do that when can we put that on the agenda okay okay October November sounds good all right but I will say after the division's review I will likely with Robert need to bring it to cabinet because of the fiscal implication so before we move that forward so yes okay all right thank you thank you you're here all right and with that may I have a motion for adjournment move second and all in favor I
