think I got that a little backwards at any rate I am an alumni of Kennedy High School um and high school was pretty tough for me but one of the main reasons I came to school a lot of days was because I was part of the choir and Mr Ron hosi was my teacher he had a huge heart for students um who sometimes were overlooked or took someone like me who thought I was pretty rebellious and turned me into a leader um he's gone on to I know Mentor many leaders in the district to the people I sang with inquir or principles um and I want to speak on behalf of appointing him to the Board of Trustees because I know he was that last car in the parking lot at the end of the
day and the first car you saw in the morning and that's the kind of teacher I've become too sometimes you know cursing his name for that because it instilled in me that the students are so important and the work we do every day changes and touches lives um it's it feels really humbling to you know to have someone see you as a child um into your adulthood and walk by you in the Halls um and it also means a lot because you know Anna piery was um the art teacher at Lexington when I started teaching and I could hear her whistle for cleanup um in my classroom a couple doors down and having champions for the Arts on the board means a lot to me as a person who sometimes people who value art think
differently um and we know that it instills the kinds of things in our students lives that make them enjoy lives and really take their creative thinking to do things that can't be conceived of an education I just really want to say that that he's touched a lot of lives um and please consider that thank you so much and I'm sorry I didn't explain the timer oh thank you you're you're great um I didn't explain the timer for those of you who are going to speak uh it will be set for um three minutes and that first timer that the buzz that you're going to hear is for one minute uh left on the timer I apologize I did not let you know that our next speaker on this item is Julie is it Spencer uh
sper sper I apologize so good evening um my name is Julie sper and I'm a parent of one current student in the district and two who graduated from Oxford Academy and I'm also a graduate of Walker and Kennedy High School so I'm homegrown and tonight I'm here to speak on behalf of Mr Ron hosi I've know Mr hosi for many years starting when he was my choir teacher at Kennedy back in the 80s and when I look back at my high school years choir was the bright spot of the day where we sang and we danced and we just really enjoyed music and Mr hosi was a very positive Teacher full of energy and life and such a gifted musician then fast forward to 2014 and it was so wonderful to um and such a
surprise to see him as principal of Oxford Academy when my oldest son was a seventh grader and Mr hosi was still full of life and full of energy and he just poured that into the students at Oxford and as you know he retired once but then um he came back to help where it needed and I feel like he was just born to be involved in students lives um he's one of those people who's able to connect and understand and he cares um he continues to be involved and he still has his pulse on on the on the schools and the students and he just knows their heartbeats I asked one of my classmates from Kennedy how he would describe Mr hosi and this is what Mark pining he was our ASB president back in
0241988 had to say he said hosi changed the lives of countless kids across the district for decades I forever grateful for what he saw saw in me back in the ' 80s and the standard he helped me see to reach my full potential success doesn't come easy and when the chips are down and things are hard I remember the nights when he would push us to be our best never to quit to reach the stars and know that at least a 100 kids are now leaders would say that they had the same he helped them to get to where they were and nowadays people talk about influencers sometimes in a negative way but um Mr hoshi's W in a very positive way um he brings out the best in students and he brings out the
best in others and so I would really encourage you uh to appoint him as a member of your board and I just know that he cares otherwise he'd be retired and off somewhere else so thank you for your time thank you you all right those are all of our um uh public comments for this item uh opening for uh comments questions or um nominations I move to appoint Mr Ron hosi as the next uh board member here I will second that nomination I didn't hear you I will second that nomination good would anyone care to to comment on that motion yes um uh I want to thank everyone that applied uh and for your willingness to serve um up here on the aohc board of um and I want to say looking at um who
we want uh to represent area 5 um from our dear colleague that passed away and uh just looking at U Mr hoshi's background in this District as a teacher um as a choir adviser as a um administrator and adviser to our ambassador program um that serves um throughout our entire District um I couldn't be proud of to support anyone else uh for to take on to represent area five well miss gu I think you have said just about everything that needs to be said I uh I've known Mr hosi for some time and have to uh agree with everything that you you did state so I'm uh very excited to have him as part of our membership here I just want to say thank you for all of you who have participated in this effort
and like um Brian I've known Mr hosi for a men a million milon years and I'm grateful for all your talents that you have savored and spread in this school district and how you've improved Society because if we are successful in schools and producing children that go out youth that go out and make the world better you're at the Pinnacle of that and all I can say is thank you everyone for being here for trying to make any changes you'd like to make thank you thank you um I I thank all of the candidates for their participation uh I think we had about eight uh candidates in the beginning uh and then uh after checking some of the boundaries uh a few I think there were about three and then uh I think a couple
others I I thought they I think they saw the weight of you know the enormity of this position and they decided to to leave but the the three of you who stayed in and uh we were able to view your applications and um and uh interview you we really appreciate because um the commitment that you made to to actually put your name out there and um and uh put yourself out there um because it's not easy to sit up here and and uh answer questions um off the cuff um and it is an arduous process but we appreciate you doing that and we appreciate um we hope that you still stay um connected to our district um there are there's a lot of great need out there um Mr hosi at this time exemplifies the
candidate that um that I think that we need uh we're going through some uh very tough times uh budget wise and uh we need a leader who understands that we need a leader who uh knows our district um and filling uh one of our trustees who's been in this District um for over four decades um it's a very very tough shoes to fill um and after hearing um that Anna piery herself had discussed um Mr hosi as a candidate um really uh weighed uh on my heart um and to honor uh her wishes um Mr hosi um exemplified knowledge about our district um and knows uh where we're headed he knows where we've been and where we're headed and so uh for those reasons uh I will vote for Mr Ron hosi so we will
do the vote so all in favor hi Mr Ron hosi welcome aboard so um audience Mr hosi is going to get sworn in right now and then he will step up and sit at the dis with us and continue the meeting there's this agenda congratulations Mr hosi so uh I'm um honored to give you the oath of office so please repeat after me I state your name ion hosi do solemly swear do you solemnly swear that I will support and defend that I will will support and defend the Constitution of the United States the Constitution of the United States and the constitution of the State of California and the constitution of the State of California against all enemies against all enemies foreign and domestic foreign and domestic that I will bear true faith that I

go ahead and say a few words okay and what if you want to say say a few words all right well um next year marks my 40th year in this district and um I'm going to tell you I started off as a teacher and I went from that to a swimming coach to an activities director um to an assistant principal an ambassador advisor and consultant and I just have to say during those 40 years I just really felt like along the way this district has been with me as far as every opportunity what I want to do for kids and actually for teachers like Maryanne and former students like Julie who's serving as PTSA president at Oxford right now is I want to let parents and students know of the endless opportunities that are here
in this District I think Muhammad is here tonight and he's the Ambassador um he's an ambassador at Western High School and you know nine out of our 12 ambassadors this year come from immigrant families and I think that they have seen the possibilities but I think what we need to do is we need to invite people and let people know and have knowledge of all the opportun unities our district has for them um we are a model um District that is doing so many things the first district that has a partnership with Google you know that has a pledge I mean I have nephews and nieces that fought to get into UCI and now we have a pledge that if you follow the you know uh the the pathway through that and we have a
mentorships Anaheim Innovative mentoring experience with a partnership with Disney for $350,000 dual en Roman opportunities one of my ambassadors last year graduated with a cyber security uh degree from uh Cypress College simultaneously while while graduating from Cyprus High School I mean we're doing a lot of right things but you know what there are some kids I feel that need to get connected through choir activities Athletics we need to connect them to share with them the amazing opportunities that we have so hey students here I hope you know I'm glad to see that you're here and you have a voice tonight and um I hope that you know of all the opportunities like Muhammad took advantage of at his school site and um I I'm looking forward to working with this board and uh giving you
guys uh more opportunities and more connections so that your educational experience we're not teaching you we're providing an educational experience for you uh for you to be connected with other people thank you so much for this opportunity I'm um I'm looking forward to hearing Carl's jokes and um uh and anyway I'm working with this fine board and congratulations to all my colleagues out there um who uh got some new positions and so forth I'm I'm really looking forward to working with you as well thank [Applause] you okay moving on to more recognitions on 8.1 the classified employees of the year uh the Board of Trustees would like to recognize the Anaheim Union High School District's 2023 24 classified employees of the Year nominees uh listed on the agenda uh the 28 classified employees of the

Lena and the Arabic program um although I could probably talk all day about the Arabic program I'll try to only talk about the most important things um I'd like to focus on recognizing Miss Lena's passion um now when I was a freshman Miss Lena pulled me aside and asked me my thoughts on creating an Arabic International dance for international week at Western um I was a freshman so I probably didn't have the proper confidence to fully commit to it so unfortunately it didn't happen that year the year after that when I was a sophomore she asked me again and um I once again didn't fully commit I was still a sophomore and after after I felt like I regretted it and usually at this point um lots of people might just give up um but
miss Lena believed so much not only in the Arabic culture but she just believed so much in her students and the year after that she asked me again and after seeing obviously her passion towards it it made me much more fueled to do it with her so together we created the first Arabic DEA uh intern national dance at Western and maybe not only just at Western's history but the district's history i' never heard of anything like that before um she's also miss Lena is also extremely Avid on her social media for the Arabic program and through the social media lots of other schools saw our dance and before we knew it we're performing at different schools different fundraisers and different other dance programs um we actually have another dance coming up this June 29th at
the Anaheim Library um overall I cannot stress Miss Lena's passion towards the Arabic program and her dedication to spreading our beautiful culture thank you thank you Noelia Alvarado welcome noi I'm really nervous so sorry if I stuttered okay maraba hello alikum peace be upon you my name is Noelia and I want to talk about why the district should not remove Arabic as a subject as a member of this community and a passionate advocate for cultural diversity and educational Excellence I urge you to reconsider these decisions for the following reasons removing Arab as a subject will not only deprives the students of the opportunity to learn a critically important language but also strip away the vital component of their education by eliminating Arabic we risk alienating students from Arab backgrounds and causing cultural ignorance and misunderstandings
learning Arabic has opened doors for me in understanding the Traditions history and custom of arabic speaking societies I have come to learn and respect the diversity of this culture and believe this class helps in preparing students for diverse career opportunities as a non-arab I really don't want this program to be removed because Miss Musa Miss Lena is great at teaching the material and staying connected with our students by creating engaging experiences with cultural meals and dances I learned so much more than what I expected going into Arabic 1 non-native speakers would benefit from Arabic classes because they would get to learn various dialects such as Egyptian and Palestinian for example learning any language in in general can benefit students in many ways but I believe that Arabic will give cultural knowledge and respect for the
Middle East with all the controversy about Middle East I believe this class helps all these cultures unite students and teaches them to respect one another thank you for taking the time to listen what I had to say and I hope you consider continuing this class regardless of politics thank you thank you Noel Miriam Musa welcome good afternoon everyone I trust you are all doing well my name is Mariam and I am an incoming 10th grade student at Western High School when I begin my sophomore year I will be in the Arabic five course I am here today because I am considered regarding the pun cancellation of the Arabic one course for the upcoming 2024 2025 Academic Year at Western High School this issue holds significant important for me especially concering my younger brother school plans
my brother zad is an incoming eighth grade student and intends to transfer to our school in two years to take part in the Arabic program our decision to join Western High School was only because of the opportunity to continue our Arabic studies consequently the possibility of discontinuing the Arabic one course is deeply upsetting for both of us I understand that many students are excited to enroll in the Arabic program next year and the removal of Arabic one would deny them this opportunity this decision not only affects certain students but also impact students who looking forward to learn about Arabic language and culture I firmly believe that maintaining this course is essential for the academic care and culture enhancement of the students body at Western High School the discontinuing of Arabic one would not only affect
certain students but it would also prevent the growth of diversity and inclusivity values that are important to our school in addition the academic concern I would like to highlight the valuable work of our Arabic teacher Miss Musa her expert patience and dediction to teaching the Arabic language and culture are truly admirable Miss musa's offered help have made the Arabic program an important part of our school education and her influence has and her influence has been inspired many students to pursue Arabic studies thank you so much thank you Dana alaban welcome hello good afternoon everyone my name is Dana Alman and I want to bring my concerns and my frustration on the removal of Arabic 1 for the 2024 2025 school year me and many students feel ASE that this is a decision to this decision
is completely unfair and and unprofessional to the Arab community at Western as being the only School in Orange County offering Arabic and a public high school I feel that this is a tactic to completely shut down the Arabic program recently our program has attracted lots of diverse students showing interest in learning in our in learning our culture and enrollment numbers are higher than ever as an upcoming sophomore Miss Lena has helped me so much for my first year I want to point out that me and other students have transferred schools to experience this opportunity personally I switched from Garden Grove District just to learn Arabic switching to Western has been the best decision ever I fell into a really bad path and made terrible choices until meeting Miss Lina she welcomes students with open arms
and helps us go through the worst situations why take this opportunity away from New freshman um from going to celebrate cultural holidays birthdays Etc together as a community has been the best thing ever there is no reason for there's no reason for only the Arab Community having to fight each year to keep our community together this is this is the only thing that has kept our community together and makes us feel at home me and my family are extremely disappointed on this decision and we believe it wasn't thought thly removing Arabic will lead to a huge change in Western numbers since majority of the students in Arabic program are only attending Western for the program to conclude I urge you to reconsider this decision it's not too late think about what the students want and
how this will affect us don't be the ones to fill the Arab Community thank you so much for listening in and have a good day thank you [Applause] thank you students I know it's not easy to get up there and um speak to the the board uh especially um for um an issue that you feel so passionately about the Board of Trustees um appreciates your your uh comments and uh so I just wanted to um we can't address uh the concerns at this moment but we do have a director here and I'd like to call her up and and ask her if she could um give some insight about what's happening with the with the program sure so my name is Dr Renee Bryan I serve as your director of plural lingual services so that's
all things World language language acquisition dual language immersion all the assessments and good things around there so when I first came to Anaheim Union High School District that was in 2017 the year before 2016 2017 was the implementation planning year so that was before I got here I don't know if you all remember that was a time when we had many um refugees and immigrants from the Middle East that arrived during that time many um Advocates from the community said you know what will you be doing to help our recent arrivals and so one of the things was to plan to implement uh the Arabic World language program at Western so that rolled out in 2017 2018 that was my first year and I know all of us were really really proud of rolling out
the program and implementing we had good numbers at that time because we still had many students um who were immigrating uh to the United States to Orange County and finding a home in that program and the numbers were greater um we also had uh the same people asking for us to roll out something in the summer and that's how we started our summer Language Academy trying to address the needs of our newcomers in the summer as well um so unfortunately as with many of our programs uh when the pandemic hit um you know our numbers we're still declining in our rare programs and so in 2020 coming out 2021 coming out of the pandemic the numbers were decreasing um for that program um we are proud of the Arabic program we are proud of all
of you and all the work that you've done as you know this district has come through some hard times of um facing a reduction in force and then having to come back and um say that we will make sure we keep our teachers but that also causes us to look at where we have the lowest amount of enrollments in our courses and so unfortunately based on the years of trying to promote um I don't know if everyone is aware but every single year that we had the program the teachers had one curriculum planning period and a promotional planning period so we gave the teachers time because we started out with a different teacher for the first year and then we had Lena Musa the second year and so we asked them to use that time
and she did do a great job we all did a really great job the district helped promote John Bautista helped promote and his team we all tried to promote the program but we just haven't seen the numbers each year increase uh to the level in which we need them to so a normal class load for a high school teacher would be about 190 students and so right now for next year um if we had one it would be maybe 50 to 75 students if we offered Arabic one but that's still only a quarter of the students that other teachers have um not offering one that takes us down to 24 students so we will um have to we we cannot maintain classes that are that small so we are very sorry it's a hard decision
that we have to to make but it's also we have to consider the entire ecosystem of the district and all the teachers and we cannot maintain a class with 75 students for the entire day um and when we talk about Equity that's an equity issue where some teachers have 190 students and then we have a teacher with only next year it would be 24 students can I ask a clarify question have we've been kind of um you know supporting the program and I remember at one time we were uh having some support from the community in at the beginning uh in supporting um the funding of this program um so the only support from the community that we've had we've had small grants from the cutter foundation for the classroom itself so we've had about
so when you've gone on your field Tri trips part of the money has come from the cutter foundation and part of the money has come from our department plural lingual services to make sure that you can enjoy those field trips um but those are small classroom grants there was also a classroom grant for books um but we were not when we did apply for the $250,000 Grant they had changed the platform in which they accepted the grants and when we finally met with them to say could we possibly have that Grant um they said we're very sorry that your application was submitted at the time that we changed platforms and now it's after the first year because they will only give the first year Grant in the first year of the program so we had
many discussions with them really asking them if they could please fund us um but they were not able to but we're very thankful for the money that they did give for the books and the field trips um we did um take our multilingual California project grant money um and we did ask Orange County Department of and the California Association for bilingual education if we could move that over and we did so we have subsidized her salary into general fund with those funds that we had from uh the mcap Grant and so instead of using those funds for something else within our department we made sure that we helped to fund the teacher because we knew it was a hardship to have that low of numbers without the support but other than that we have not
had any extra funding from the community and and how many years have we been doing that um doing supplementing the yes so that's a really good question um actually from the beginning um our district has actually funded that position so what normally happens is every school is given um the full-time educator funds for an educator and it comes within the number of teachers they can have but the district has actually funded that teacher every single year we've used our own District funds and not taken it from their site funds so it's a really important point every single year the district as a whole has made sure they've used District funds outside of site funds to fund that position thank you thank you okay at this time uh reports of the associations Jeff Morganstern are you
here there you are welcome all right good evening I'm board president randel tro Board of Trustees congratulations Mr hosi on your appointment superintendent matsuda and cabinet I want to follow up just on a couple things that I spoke last week about uh in my report uh first is the creation of a transparent and collaborative committee which is now called the budget stabilization committee I had a great conversation with Dr nen this morning and we're starting to put those pieces into place considering the scope of what the work is going to happen the tasks that's before the committee who's going to be appointed to the committee how are parents students committee members going to be recruited for the committee so we're working all those details out and hopefully the plan is to have that committee up
and running by September so it can begin its work uh that was one of the asks by the uh teachers uh this spring and in the prision of of the reduction of force notices so thank you for that work um I do also want to follow up a little bit on my comments regarding the lcap I know that and as we've seen from the elcap report class size reduction is always a top vote getter amongst the community um and that's taken many different forms over the years um and last week I kind of threw out the idea about the idea of class caps and maybe using that this year for raap and possibly into bargaining for next year and and a member reached out to me who watched online didn't understand what I was saying
so it it kind of the teacher and me said well I think I need to go back and kind of clarify that I don't think I explained that too well so and we had this discussion a little bit when um in the spring um over the budget and the teaching positions currently in the contract we do not have class-size numbers we have student load numbers so for example as a junior high history teacher 24 years of Brookhurst the most amount of students that I could see in a day was 222 that's six classes on an average of 37 students a class for high school it's 195 and I think it was just mentioned by Dr Brian um that is an average of 39 students for five classes taught for high school teachers uh PE at
the junior high is I have to double check my numbers here to make sure I get it right is 336 a day with an average of 56 students in a class and PE for high school is 290 which which is an average of 58 per class and so the idea of class caps is different than the idea of student load so throughout my career I taught many electives ASB student store several electives within the social science department and sometimes those classes were less than that average of 37 so if I had my ASB class and I only had 25 students there was still an opportunity to put 12 more students in my five remaining seventh or eighth grade history classes so they could not be at the average they could be closer to 40 sometimes
in the mid-40s now this doesn't happen all the time but it happens often enough and I think speaking on INE equity for the lens of equity is if you're a student in a sophomore biology class and you have 45 students that's tough for the teacher tough for the students freshman English 8th grade math seventh grade PE classes and so this idea of a class cap ensures that every student is going to have the access to the support that they need we listened to the students speak this spring about the the impact that their teachers have had in their lives and I think that this is a great way to take the will of the community regarding class size and student staff ratio and apply it in a unique way so that we can guarantee that
no student would be in a class let's say if the average is 39 we we cap it a 40 these are just some suggestions if the average is 37 we we cap it at 38 so that no student sits in that class with students in the you know the total number of students in the mid-40s so anyway I just wanted to speak to that again and clarify that and look forward to discussing that in in the the weeks to come as the board and the cabinet make their decision on how to apply uh the suggestions or the recommendations made through the elcap process so I look forward to and feel free to reach out and thank you and for everyone in the audience and up here you know I hope you have an opportunity to
take some rest this summer and spend some time with family and friends I know I'm looking forward to it um so and then we can get back to work uh in the fall all right thank you have a great night thank you Jeff uh Heather hutner president Randall tro Board of Trustees superintendent cabinet staff what's left of the community anybody no okay um I just want to start off by recognizing some of the amazing achievements that were done by the ca's classified staff this year as we close out the 2324 school year the EIT Department successfully upgraded our internet to 20 Gigabytes per second so if you download stuff quickly you can thank them um they completed successful Fireball comp content filter and core switch upgrades and areas updates including system enhancements Cloud Transitions and

office event as our chapter's unsung hero of the Year our library Department fueled by the tireless work of our amazing Library Med media technicians had an amazing year this is from our new library uh new librarian they are very fond of her just so you guys know um we circulated an impressive 65,000 plus library books uh who thanks to our library mediat techs who ensure our collections are organized and inviting for students highlighting the vibrant library scene across the district we launched the auhsd libraries Instagram account Eric gagn the LMT at Brookhurst led a student group on an unforgettable field trip to yal West the Santa Monica Book Festival where they met and listened to talks from renowned authors like Jason Reynolds Alan Gratz Gordon Corman Angie Thomas and more fa Fabiola Perez LMT at
Sycamore secured a grant for the exciting book Ander project a summer Library program where students delve into research hone their Library skills and embark on field trips to the Anaheim Library liary and Bowers Museum throughout the year the lmts kept their libraries buzzing with activities Tommy kovak weekly read alouds at Anaheim student versus LMT chess challenges with Luis tereso at South author talks coordinated by Jennifer Fitz Simmons at Oxford Ley vasquez's coloring stations for mental health awareness at fall peer mediation sessions organized by Gina Tucker at Cyprus ESP sports club with Albert V at Gilbert and Percy Jackson themed parties planned by Pat rosalis at Walkers and of course book clubs Book Fairs and much more now let's not forget about all of our school office staff while some other positions may be overstaffed or
not a job study has shown that many of our school offices are underst staffed compared to other similarly Sky schools and other districts on top of that the front office staff at many of our campuses has become the holding area for disruptive students when a student is removed from a classroom for their behavior contractually they cannot be put in another teachers's classroom and the ice rooms are long gone our administrators are usually busy running from one place to another so what happens to the student more often they're not they're left in the front office under the supervision of office assistants attendants records registar support secretaries and Senior admin who now in addition to the regularly assigned tasks are also trying to Monitor and maintain control of what can be multiple students students who are already
there because of their behavior all over the district our classified employees are trying their best to provide the five C's as the front line with families and students communication and compassion are critical components of many of our day-to-day interactions from helping a sick student to helping a parent navigate their Aries account we see the fruits of classified labor and the creativity of our faces in supporting our unders uh underserved families with Community Resources and creating parent involvement activities and in the critical thinking skills of our campus safety AIDS when they have to diffuse and deescalate volatile situations as for collaboration yes we collaborate all the time but one of the most common themes and complaints that I hear from classified staff is feeling left out of the important collaboration conversations so what I want to
ask the district is if we are doing our best to provide the five c's for you is the district doing their best to provide the five C's to classified staff thank you thank you heather okay is there a representative from the PTA Association here tonight all right moving on to public comments okay um Corina CA okay hi sorry Haya shaba shalabi not here daa Alba Alba Dan and Adia okay all right right moving on to 11.1 adoption local control and accountability plan lcap and annual update this is an action item moved second move for approval and um on this item I need to um we need to add uh trusty Randall tro the the the uh exhibit a that was adopted at the time of uh agenda adoption had one subsequent Amendment so if we
could ask the board to uh add in so we'll need to change the exhibit that you adopted at the beginning so it would be a motion to adopt exhibit a with the changes that were provided at the beginning of Open Session okay okay so move to adopt is amended second okay move to Second it all in favor I I all right than thank you do we have to go back on the first U motion uh I don't believe so not on that one you're okay it's just an amendment okay uh were there any questions or comments uh on our lcap Mr Anal not specific I've had a lot of questions for staff to give me some explanations but generally speaking um uh no I see it's a new cycle starting another three years um um
there's some uh uh goals stated in here that I really look forward to achieving those goals and maybe surpassing in some places I know it'll be a challenge for everybody concerned especially as we as we look forward to a reduced uh funding in the future along with a because of fewer students but uh it's it's a a big goal so I I I challenge all the whole District to to be able to achieve this so thank thanks to one and all that that took all the time to come up with this plan I'm talking about the staff teachers students and the community so thank you one and all it's it's really takes a village to put this together thank you anyone else um I'll Echo those comments uh I also asked some questions and asked
for some data uh just appreciate everyone that was part of the process this year um and thank you to roana for putting it together Dr Hernandez uh could you just briefly explain uh some people might want to uh get a clarification of when we said um amendments to uh this um document absolutely good evening first of all I just want to say thank you to the board for entrusting me with this um document and this process so I'm humbled to be before you tonight and just go over some of the changes the majority have been clerical in nature this is is a new uh adopted template from the California Department of Ed so around the county in California our friends have been busy reviewing um the local control plan for all of the district so
they've been very busy in providing technical support So this year you do have an a local control accountability plan update which closes out our three-year cycle some of the changes in there um we're we're very minor so in the general um the goal analysis they wanted to see those metrics move to the evidence so the content is the same the spirit of the lcap and the voice of our community is still reflected in each and every one of these Pages um Additionally you Reed the lcff budget overview for parents which really gives our parents an easy way to see uh the project projected expenditures for the 2425 school year and then finally for the 2425 lcap plan um CD has asked the California Department of Ed along with um Orange County Department of Ed has
asked that we include metrics for students and schools that have um in the California dashboard metrics are showing uh low performance so you will see uh new subgroups and some of the schools mentioned in the metrics where before we did not so if they're in the red you will see those schools mentioned if they have a subgroup um that that's in the red in either the college career indicators our Ela math Casp scores chronic absenteeism or our English learner performance index so you'll see those schools or specific subgroups like our homeless youth are now mentioned our long-term English Learners are also mentioned there have not been any updates to the budgets from the previous presentation um most of it has been just um adding additional data to uplift the work that we're doing the support
that we're going to provide these specific subgroups thank you so much for explaining that and I Echo the sentiments of my colleagues and appreciate you uh wholeheartedly in this uh arduous Endeavor every year um you pull this off tremendously um I don't know how you do it and you uh it seem it seems seamless to you I know it's um hours and hours of work and uh painstaking um precision and so um we thank you for that thank thank you for the opportunity and thanks for just the folks that kind of had paved the way like Mr Carmona and and other folks in our definitely our Ed division team our business team it is a collaborative effort and obviously the support of our community who really uh come and support this process and invest um

have some amazing people starting with us in the coming year so thank you okay uh did you have any reports did you have any oh any reports places that you've been well uh last I think a few weeks ago uh Mrs Brown and I uh were we uh worked with the new ambassadors and like I said we we had our workshop training and so forth and um nine out of the 12 ambassadors come from immigrant families and I just think we're so excited about that because I think it's it really is testimony to the opportunities that we give students and that they feel that they have uh student voice with purpose and uh they're seeing I mean I'm really proud to say that we have RSVP as an established program at all of our sites

thank you Mr Sure first of all I want to congratulate Mr hosi and welcome to the Das and I want to congratulate all the rest of the administrators that got uh promoted moved into their new area responsibility so look forward to working with them seeing them on the campuses as as I travel around uh since our last Gathering I think we have all been very busy uh through the graduation process so there were as you all know 12 graduations we all went through the 12 graduations and it was very very well done so I have to congratulate the staff that put put on the graduations it was very smooth it's very smoothly done I attended the cab seal of of Excellence um the big unveiling of the Oxford Marquee I'm just wondering when we're going
to have the unveiling of the Walker Marquee okay that's all right I attended a principal meeting and that I was very impressed with how that ran uh I attended the Walker Band concert and for those students I'm sure it is the same on all Junior High campuses but start with a seventh grader that's never touched an instrument to the end of the year how much they have progressed and they actually can play very nice sounding decent music I really enjoyed that evening uh attended the retirement tea for some of the retirees from the district I'd like to seen more and heard more about where they're going what they're doing um but uh I know that some of them uh retired during the year so they were not there uh I attended an Roop open house
and I don't if people here have been into the Roop building across the street but the um entryway that the foyet has been uh altered quite a bit with plaques names of uh students names of Administrators trustees Etc it's very very welcoming in there now so it's nice to see it's really a transformation I attended the Kennedy senior Awards tonight where uh scholarships were awarded to uh students throughout the uh the school seniors throughout the school I attended aama City Memorial Day celebration where they recognized um uh those who have fallen uh not only in military but also some uh city folks were recognized and uh Dr Josh Parsons the director of of the band there uh he attended this is now schools already out but he had a group of students and they've been
doing this for I think over 30 years and never missed a Memorial Day but I have to say that Dr Parsons um apparently he took a a challenge and I believe it was blue hair he was sporting that day so it was a quite a surprise to see him across the the the grounds and then Bob Anthony who was his predecessor as the band director he was there also and he played Taps which he had done a number of years in a row uh ATT the RO board meeting and recently and a budget meeting when was the budget meeting yesterday this week Tuesday Tuesday Tuesday yes and so I'm glad to hear the budget stabilization uh group being informed and seeing where that takes us um and without my glasses here uh I just wanted

breath away and I want to thank all of the people Dr nean um Dr Fred uh Brad Jackson Carl for all the work you do and when we're in Clos session sometimes it's just you just wonder how do they handle all this and especially since coming out of Co which affected everybody in the world and it affected our students our teachers having to deal with the issues of young people having difficulties in life and all I can say is that these people all of them are Saints and I'd like to uh acknowledge Connie and Paulina our wonderful assistants because I just know the public has no idea what your jobs entail but in all the years I've been on the board I've never seen an agenda like this and it's surreal but all I can
say is thank you for what all of you do and thank you Mike you're special thank you Miss Smith this Guera thank you um I want to Echo the comments and welcome Mr hosi uh to the board looking forward to working with you and this new capacity um so I want to share some of the end of the Year celebrations that I attended I went to um and I'm high school's dual Language Academy banquet um I attended the 2024 California school Rec program Awards uh with trusty O'Neal uh which highlighted some of our distinguished schools our Civic learning Award of Excellence schools and our Civic learning Award of Merit schools um so congratulations to them all um I had the opportunity to go to the Capstone showcase for anim high school and Dale Junior High
School and I'm always so impressed by our junior high students uh being able to do that and present um I don't know if I'd be able to do that when I was a junior high St no I know I wouldn't be able to do that uh when I was a junior high student so just commend them all uh for their work um attended the classified employee of the Year Awards uh the cbas of Excellence recognition at Sycamore Junior High School for the Dual Language Academy program I uh also attended the budget committee and the insurance committee and then um also attended the Marquee in veiling at uh Oxford Academy and then attended the 12 graduations uh want to Echo the comments and thank everyone that was a part of the process uh that worked uh
through all those 12 graduations celebrating our students and their families um and then I recently attended um sore Junior High School has this uh Cass in the classroom program and I had the opportunity to be part of the release um so the Cass in the classroom program is an immersive hands-on experience designed to ignite curiosity and passion for stem subjects um and that's run by our teachers Shan McBride and Bill Kavanaugh and in April they invited students uh families and community members uh to receive white sea basss from The Hub SeaWorld Research Institute and the students got to participate in the growth um of the fish feeding and monitoring them and then releasing them um so I was able to be part of the release uh which is a really incredible program and I commend
them for their work on that um and then I wanted to end uh tonight's comments um I wanted to share uh my deepest condolences uh to the fam's uh friends and the Nim High School Community um as we remember two of our Anaheim High legends that passed away this may uh Mr John Urban and speed Castillo um I wanted to share a little bit about them uh John urbanek was a former anim High School coach who passed away on May 9th at the age of 88 he coached swimming and water polo at Anam High between the years of 1964 and 1978 an era when the swimming and water poloo teams achieved CIF championships and All-American honors um he coached uh College as well as well the as well as Olympics Team USA um he continues
uh to support anim High School water polo team uh throughout the years and visited the pool often um and I know the board uh named the 2019 um Anam High School quatic Center in his memory um honoring his career and contributions um and then my second uh adjournment is for Speed Castillo uh who was a former anim High School administrator and referee who passed away May 18th at the age of 94 um speed is the most recognized referee in Orange County Sports history um since 195 9 he has officiated thousands of high school and college level football and basketball games uh but first he was an educator uh for 33 years and served as an administrator in ahsd um his two student his two children also graduated from Anaheim high school and he was also
inducted into the Anam high school hall of fame um I actually first met him at ANM High School uh basketball game uh where um he shared a story on his experience uh through our district um and you could tell his love not only for sports uh but most fortunately always for the an high school team um he continued to come back and watch basketball games and football games at Glover Stadium cheering on our students um so Madame President if we can adjourn um in their memory tonight absolutely thank you thank you for your report uh first I I want to clarify that um a district employee elected to the board shall resign his or her positions as an employee before being sworn in or shall have his or her employment automatically terminated upon being sworn
into office so that's automatically done Mr hosi just wanted to let the public know some folks have asked about that so I just wanted to clarify that and to also lend you my um heartfelt congratulations uh and thank you for applying for this position and welcome aboard all right um uh a lot of our district um attended the funeral mass of uh trusty piery uh and and our staff uh really supported um Anna's family during that uh uh very very difficult uh day um and a lot uh I know have helped um during the process um process during this um it was a process for for Anna uh to be going through this and a process for the for the family to be going through that and I I want to thank um all of
you you know who you are who really supported um Anna and her family um the the mass was a beautiful ceremony and uh many of her uh friends uh from a long time uh came to a a brunch afterwards and uh um got to U just really talk about her and the impact and um boy we saw some really uh beautiful pictures of Anna when she was young and and uh she was and always has been such a go-getter um and very active actually saw her water skiing yeah they caught pictures of her so um a blessing and also Bittersweet um moment for um for a lot of us um thank you uh for the staff um the graduation ceremonies were absolutely gorgeous and I know everything didn't go Flawless but on our end it
was Flawless um the bands the students lining up programs uh crowd control uh we didn't have anything to say about any um anything uh we usually add in our two cents um what we think can be improved and I think today um this this year it was absolutely fabulous so thank you and I know um there was a little Cloud um like like the Ziggy cloud above our heads um but those celebrations really took that away and the students were um just magnificent and had a wonderful celebration so thank you uh to all um who uh made that happen and I don't think I've ever seen the fields look um more beautiful um I know everyone had a hand in that and so thank you um and uh Anna was um was honored at every
single uh graduation ceremony so thank you for that um let's see uh in the middle of graduations um I attended my csba uh delegate assembly meeting where um most of you know the my colleagues um were really trying to discuss uh the bud budget issues and we're coming up with some real robust um solutions to our budget issues and always always advocating for more dollars and more ways to get them uh attended uh the Roop meeting and and the open house that my colleague uh talked about uh a wonderful event um I was uh asked to go to with the South's um award night and I had no idea that South Junior High has a rock band and they're great they're really great I hope um that uh they get a chance to Showcase um
their talents maybe one of our um our Gatherings because they're really good um uh and I say that as a musician so um uh I they really had their act together um but what I what what I really loved about the awards were um yes they were um uh a lot of them were academic but the characteristics of uh when when the teachers spoke about their students um um they they highlighted more about um the students kindness and generosity um and spoke about um those qualities more than their GPA so I really appreciated that and congratulate those students attended the Oxford um Marquee ribbon cutting uh the 2024 Civic learning award uh where our district was given the um District um um District state California state district award um for democracy was a very proud
um moment and memorable and it's very nice uh to go to that um Nixon Library if you've ever been there it's uh it's a replica of like the White House and it's very Grand and beautiful and um our students have really uh outshone um themselves at uh giving their speeches I attended the classify employee of the year award um and I attended the uh last elcap meeting and I loved that you had the students uh reading um the uh findings and presentations um I celebrated uh our second cohort of parents who completed the Google certificates and PR presented their cast Capstone reflection questions on their testimonials and they all received project management uh certificates um the ahsd student film festival it's always a Grand Event um the parent leadership project showcase uh where we had
the opportunity to be uh where the parents had an opportunity to be taught by Simon Silva the artist and gosh he's a teacher he's a um author and artist uh extraordinaire and um I was a little jealous that our our parents were um able to get lessons from him but what he said um that he taught um uh the lessons that he taught taught were not about art um and it's very um aopo coming from an artist to saying that but uh they um were given the opportunity to really reflect about their own um culture and their family and it was a a beautiful event um the Mondo Ballet Folklorico was an amazing event I caught the tail end of the Ambassador celebration or installation as well as you um celebration of success um where
our standout Roop students received Awards and scholarships um I went back to our um PTSA dinner where our wonderful uh uh families and uh community members received honorary Service Awards uh stea palooza hope cup Big Brothers Big Sisters because we did not report this uh and our annual uh Bright Futures event um held at the big um held at the um the Disneyland Hotel where are uh The Bigs and Littles they call themselves The mentees and mentors um call each other bigs and Littles and those uh testimonials were amazing um I'm thinking about it myself um I don't know where I can find the time but it was that inspirational that that I think that I would love to be um a big um and last but not least um I would like to on
