just thank you for the opportunity to the board cabinet um I think it's a very important position to be held in any District as we as we go through the challenges that are presented to us on a daily basis so they are many that are uh put out our doorstep but I think we've done a great job over the years in moving forward and we have wayed to go but we've gone I think more much much more than any other District around so I'm very proud of the district and be part of it so thank you for the [Applause] opportunity oh okay than okay I have a request of the board if we could um we could pull up item uh 10.1 and 10.2 before we move on our agenda may I get a motion
just Direction you can do that by unanimous consent so we can change the order you can do it you can do that by consent as long as there's no obje consent fine okay all right item 10.1 our financial audit for fiscal year 2022 and 23 yes perfect thank you so much we have our partner Andrew Park from e Bailey to present to um the board our financial audit for 2223 um that's for our um Regular audit as well as the bond audit for 20 2 23 I'm going to give it to you Andrew well good evening it's a little bit late but Happy New Year and wow thank you so much for putting me up front it's a privilege that we don't usually see um tonight I'm here to present the uh results of the
audit so first and foremost the trend nowadays with school district audit is that ever since the pandemic we're running into a lot of difficulties and Auditors unfortunately are on the back burner so I mean statistically speaking my bread and butter is all K12 audits I do about 22 my team does about approximately 100 school districts and just to kind of give you some statistics in terms of where the audit is going in 2122 we've experienced a really difficult times we were unfortunately in a circumstance where we had to extend 80% of our audits beyond the December 15 deadline this year 22 23 when I say this year I'm kind of a year behind this Year we're in a little better place about 60% were on extension I am oh why am I bringing this up
I am happy to report that Anaheim Union High School District's audit was on time and we certainly appreciate that because again we're always kind of a second priority and we perfectly understand that but at the same time we appreciate it as an auditor because unfortunately if everything's pushed back it gets snowballed and we're overburdened like like we are now with all the extensions so I like to start off there um so we're going to cover the results of the district's audit so before I even get get into this as an auditor I work for the board I report strictly to the board I had an wonderful opportunity to speak to Mr O'Neal this year and it was a pleasure to get some insight but again we report to the board we don't work with your
cabinet or your management okay so that's that's we're basically your agents um now the fastest way to kind of gauge how the audit went is to basically refer do we have copies of the audit report yeah okay is basically if you could flip to page 103 of the audit report please it's in the way back with the header of summary of auditor [Applause] results okay it looks like we're almost there I'll wait for one more trustee okay there we go so um audit report is a technical document and you almost have to specialize in governmental audit to fully comprehend all the nuances related to the financial statements but as a trustee of of a school district really what you want to focus in on is how the audit went from an overall picture and the
best way to do this is is on page 103 which we would call summary of Auditors results okay within this page we basically focus on three specific areas first is the financial statements overall second is the district's compliance with federal regulations and lastly State compliance the district's compliant with State compliance now I just want to make it very clear that when we're talking about financial statements what we're auditing is is the document that you were presented back in probably September of 2023 this is what we would call the UN audited actuals when you were presented with that information at the time it was unaudited our job is to come in audit the information and report back to the board in terms of what we believe the financial statement should be so in other words answering
the question of are the financial statements fairly stated okay that's our primary objective what we don't do is we don't look at budgets or many make any type of subjective assumptions okay we're very objective um before I get get get into the results let's kind of cover some technical information or definition um any Auditors basically we render an opinion just like any professionals just like your attorneys highest level of assurance that we provide is what we would call an unmodified opinion it's basically synonymous with a clean opinion followed by a qualified opinion so this is basically pass with some exceptions uh within the context of academic if you will um and lastly the lowest level of assurance is a disclaimer or an aders opinion again so it's unmodified qualified adverse or disclaimer there's three levels
okay please keep that in mind so I'm going to go through the results of each of the sections and summarize what we believe the opinion should be um with respect to the district's financial statement as of June 3023 our opinion was unmodified okay we believe that the financial statements areir fairly stated in all material respects during the course of our audit procedures we basically evaluate the checks and balances that are in place to ensure that when you process a dollar a financial transaction that dollar dollar eventually flows into financial reporting P format we call this internal controls within the world of audit we are required to evaluate this under government auditing standards and if there's any deficiencies we are required to report any type of deficiencies directly to the board I am happy to report
that I have nothing to report from a deficiency standpoint okay moving on to Federal Awards um just to kind of give you some background in terms of what federal award or the audit that's required is so there's a regulation called uniform compliance requirement and this is basically driven by how much how much a non-federal entity spends in a given year and there's a specific threshold if you if a non-federal entity receives federal assistance and spends in excess of 750,000 you're subject to an independent audit no matter what there's no exception now in case you're curious you're going to be in the millions when it comes to federal assistance we're talking $ 68.3 million that Anaheim Union High School District has spent so obviously the district was subject to compliance requirements um in the 2223 fiscal
year we were required to audit quite a few programs actually uh first program that we were required to audit was your one part A funds which is basically a a federal subsidy designated to provide assistance to low-income students um the the largest program that we were required to audit is um basically your Esser funds your covid dollars that you receive the onetime dollars and lastly we were required to audit your special education program it's a federal subsidy provided to provide additional services to your special education students based on the compliance procedures that we perform our opinion was unmod mod ify with respect to all three programs additionally based on the eval evaluation of again I'm going to use the technical term here internal controls that are in place to ensure compliance with all three of
these require uh programs we did not identify any type of deficiencies everything is working as intended We Believe okay lastly on state compliance so State compliance is rather a unique area State compliance is nothing that we come up and create audit procedures annually there's actually a uh variety of interest groups that get together and create very specific areas depending on what the needs are and it involves legislators Department of Education and the state controller's office now in case you're curious a full comprehensive listing of all the programs that were required to audit are going to be on page 99 and 100 okay go back I'm GNA briefly talk about this section here so with respect to State compliance when you get to page 99 and 100 you're going to see some yes notations and no
C below notations yes notations basically indicate that we were required to perform the audit procedures because the district either administered the program or receive financial assistance and as a result there were strings attached and we required to perform audit procedures no no see below generally indicates that the district did not operate the program or did not administer the program or did not receive funding and as a so we did not ident uh we did not perform audit procedures um So based on the yes notated programs that we audited our opinion was unmodified with respect to the state uh District State compliance requirements okay that pretty much summarizes how the audit went it was um we really don't have much to report to the board unfortunately fortunately depending on how you want to look at it
any questions that I may try to answer I just want to congrat congratulate Dr nen and her department for the the the work that goes into doing this making sure that we are in compliance and it was a pleasure talking to you and getting through some concerns that weren't concerns after all so thank you you're welcome and I'd like to ditto that Dr Nan thank you it's a big job you hold thank you so much and I do want to take this time to thank Karen ASAS Joe kimona um it's a big effort we spend um you know weeks you know getting everything ready and then as well as working with the external Auditors e Bailey I'm one of the managers um over there Alexa kosi she's been awesome to work with and there's a
lot of new regulations this year that they really had to help us so uh please make sure you communicate that to Alexa that um it's a lot of extra things that they are teaching us as well there new compliant that comes out and there's so many new regulations that comes out every single year so um you know they have been very patient with us and um Andrew is um you're like he just got uh into our district back in April says every six years they have to rotate a new partner right so these are different rules that we have um and he's been great to work with as well and so I think I want to just tell the staff um it's really hard nowadays to get this type of cling audit I would say
is it 10 10 or 15% districts get this type of audit nowadays or I don't maybe the special is even lower now I don't know what that yeah it's um you know I just had one where I was grilled for about 40 minutes regarding all the findings that I wrote so I mean you know we're we're you know we don't actively look for findings but our job is to report unfortunately and you know I mean you know it's it's a good thing that we don't have anything to report we appreciate that thank you thank you awesome perfect okay we can talk about the bond funding okay so just um briefly if you can just uh quickly talk about the bond audit so we for the bond program it is a requirement to have a separate
audit um on that as well um so just we can kind of quickly summarize that as well we uh do want to make sure that um Community know that you know how we spend on bond dollars every dollar is being audited as well and so we want to make sure that we communicate that to the public as well sure so so I'll go again if you don't mind so um Bond audit is the smaller piece of the audit uh document that you have in front of you it's it's a two-part audit it's basically a segmented Financial audit specifically focused on bonds so basically what we do is we scale down all the testing so when we're working with hundreds of millions our testing threshold is going to be a lot higher versus when you when
you're look at looking at a bond maybe we're looking at tens of millions right so we scale down the testing so I'm not going to talk too much I generally get carried away a little bit but um so just kind of starting with the financial section or segmented audit related to the uh measure age funds our opinion again was unmodified with respect to the bond financial statements we believe that the bond financial statements house within the building fund of the district is fairly stated in all material respects as of June 30 2023 in other words it was a clean audit with respect to the internal control aspect that we always report back to the board we also did not identify any type of deficiencies related to the management of bond Bond dollars from a financial
reporting perspective okay um the more interesting part is on the second half of the audit report now this is this is what we would call a performance audit it's basically synonymous with compliance audit now what is the objective under performance audit we basically seek out and try to answer whether or not the district spent the proceeds in accordance to what the voters wanted okay it's basically we're we're aligning sampled expenditures and we're basically going through what the voters have approved and it's a yes or no no type of question There's No Gray it's either yes or you didn't okay um just to kind of give you some perspective in terms of our test testing that we performed so in the 2223 fiscal year we sampled 25.4 million out of $ 31.3 million so from a
percentage standpoint we covered 82% of the total expenditures from a sampling standpoint so just just as a reminder the principles of audit are based on a statistical approach and no Auditors would ever audit 100% so again we rely on the princip of Statistics um based on the testing that we performed we believe that the district had spent all the bomb proceeds in accordance to what the voters have approved okay so we did not identify any type of deviations or exceptions okay music to our Years thank you V any questions no no he thank you for coming we appreciate thank you Andrew it's a pleasure thank you thank you thank you okay all right um moving on to the reports uh student representative report Daniela starting with Anaheim we'd like to highlight senior Angelina GB for

at two places I just have to remember I don't know how Grant did it he had three phones for a while with CTA but anyway good evening uh board President Ronald Trejo trustees superintendent Matt suda cabinet I'm happy to be here and make a report on behalf of uh the Anaheim secondary Teachers Association I just want to take a moment to introduce myself although I'm sure all of you know me to one degree um I am a graduate of the District of Dale and Magnolia High School class of 89 I've been here in the district for 26 years now as a teacher I spent uh 24 years teaching Junior High history at Brooker Junior High uh as a department chair for history ASB um also around the student store bunch of other other duties uh
there Brookhurst uh for the last year and a half I've been on release to help build our community schools model uh with the grant that we've had and I'll speak to that here in just a little bit but I'm just happy to be here to share on behalf of our members and our teachers here in the Anaheim Union High School District uh I first want to begin by sharing our members and my and our association's appreciation uh for the recent events last week in bargaining and for the openness of the board to reach a very fair and honest uh tentative agreement um I appreciate your your openness in listening to our to Grant a few months ago when he was speaking before you and you took him seriously and considered what he had to say
I do want to acknowledge um Brad Jackson for his his time his effort and his creative planning in helping us to come together in a attentative agreement last week as well as the efforts of superintendent matsuda and Nancy nen for their work behind the scenes a lot of people did a lot of work to try to get a Fair settlement and I want to appreciate and acknowledge all of those efforts um and acknowledging just all the great and amazing things that our teachers are doing around the district every day and in every period the second thing I'd like to talk about today is just my role and dedication um in when I work in Community Schools like I said I've been on behalf of ala the Community Schools organizer for the last year and a
half and I will be transitioning somewhat in my new role as co- facilitator of the district steering for Community Schools working with Carlos Hernandez on that um I do want to share just a couple quick stories that I have an opportunity to hear about some of the amazing work that's happening at our sites I do have a great story but it's much too long for this report and hope to share with share um it with you individually at some point uh so just to uplift a couple of our folks in a couple of our schools first is catella high school and the work done by Diana Gomez our community school teacher lead and ell Hernandez our community school coordinator for well over a decade catella has not had a functioning PTA and this year it
was brought back and they have elected positions parents are in place and they're doing amazing work that's something as a result of the work that we've been doing with Community Schools there at catella High School uh the second school I'd like to acknowledge is Magnolia High School in the work of Katrina Mundy who's our community school teacher lead and Rudy ESO the community school coordinator uh and together with them they led the needs and assets assessment trying to get a good picture a good idea of what the community is like there for Magnolia and also Dale uh and I always had the privilege of going to Katrina's classroom about a month ago and watching her students give their Google certificate program management pitches and the the reason why I bring it up is their program
management certificates and what they were pitching was all based on the data that was gained through the needs and assets assessment there at moli high school so just a great connection I just want to uplift the work of all of our members and staff working toward community Community Schools I do want to highlight a couple ways in which as an association and myself as an individual have worked uh very hard in conjunction with many folks in this room uh to collaborate with the district and the association through a number of ways our our teacher input Group which was founded during the pandemic uh then branched off to our special ed teacher input group our student discipline task force members that serve on the insurance committee and budget committee uh we are committed and dedicated to
contining that uh effort of collaboration and openness and working with with the district for the benit of our students and of our members so I look forward to working together in the coming months and hopefully years if if I get reelected we'll see um and this uh fruitful and uh relationship so thank you very much appreciate the time thank you [Applause] Jeff and I believe Jennifer soci I will be speaking for ala oh Amanda oh you're going to be doing the handoff I love it for a moment okay so um so good evening um board president Randall tro Board of Trustees superintendent mattsuda cabinet and guests in the um in person and online I just wanted to um let everyone know that I am passing the Reigns of Alta president over to Jennifer sasai um
it was my pleasure to serve as the president as we work to secure new board um and I know that Jennifer is going to do an awesome job and uh want to thank her in advance for um taking on this role and ready to hand it off to her so welcome Jennifer and here you go [Applause] welcome and I'd like to thank Amanda for her years of service to Ulta and so I'd like to start with our report for Ulta tonight good evening Madame President Randall tro Board of Trustees superintendent matsuda executive cabinets students parents and Community joining us in person and online our schools are excited for a new year and the start of the new semester at our school sites we are celebrating our winter Athletics and gearing up for alap season as
well as registration for the next school year our ahsd student ambassadors are currently preparing to onboard students for the lcap process mindfulness and so and social emotional support is important several of our schools has been working in collaboration with awareness and motion last week teams participated in an all day Retreat where they practice mindfulness and conscious communication we hope you all will be able to join us Saturday for our annual servathon a SD's way of spreading kindness and compassion throughout our schools and putting the 5c's into practice every School site has a servathon invent event um also our schools are currently gearing up for the capstones CVA is kicking off our Capstone season next week with student showcases and Capstone presentations schools are also celebrating and recognizing the teachers of the year it is going
to be a great 2024 lastly ala would like to ex also express our love and support to tr to truste piery we are thinking of her and sending our well wishes thank you so so much thank you for that Jennifer and welcome aboard it is going to be a good year all righty uh do we have a representative from PTA with us today all right we're moving on to our presentations uh 8.1 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County and the Inland Empire yes and it gives me great honor to bring up our coordinator of 21st century career ratings Scott Rendell who introduced our our partners uh in this great work aome thank you Jaren um so good evening uh board president Randall tro members of the board uh superintendent mattsuda our cabinet and uh
members of the audience here in online so for those of you that don't know me in the audience at least I'm Scott Randell coordinator for career Readiness supporting our career pathway programs and our aim mentoring an internship program January is National mentoring month which makes a great time to celebrate mentoring uh with one of our key Partners so I'd like to introduce you to Katie Wright She's Director of Education and career programs with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County and the Inland Empire and um she's going to share some updates from Big Brothers Big Sisters as we celebrate National mentoring month thank you Scott good evening to everyone um like Scott said my name is Katie um I'm our director of education and career program at Big Brothers Big Sisters overseeing all of our
site based programs here in Orange County um and so as he said January honors National mentoring month which is a time to acknowledge those dedicating time as mentors to young people amplifying our young people's voice and reminding our community that they too can join the mentoring movement next slide do I have a clicker do we have a clicker oh perfect thank you um so just a little bit about what we do um at Big Brothers Big Sisters what makes us special is not only our proven outcomes um but it's also that we like to call ourselves Jedi um we're about Justice Equity diversity and inclusion um which is the framework and Foundation through which we operate on um we are youth centered volunteer-driven and onetoone through our mentoring model oh uh oh okay okay thank
you um so our programs are crafted to advance um upward social and economic mobility and we have four driving outcomes so one is social capital and connection two is emotional and mental health including social emotional learning um education and Career Success and positive behaviors and choices so a little bit of our impact um some statistics and numbers from over the years um while we've been serving students for the past 60 years for the past 10 years we've impacted over 6,000 youth bringing back $3.1 million in volunteerism to our country but specifically here in Anaheim we have mentored over a th000 youth um through 226 matches from grades 7 through 12 um and we partner together through our community- based program which is our Mo most traditional like onetoone mentoring through our high school bigs program
um which pairs high schooler with an elementary schooler our College bigs program which pairs a college student with a high school student and then um through workplace mentoring which partners are um different corporate partners with high schoolers and college students for workplace Readiness um so a little mentorship Spotlight this is a quote from a savannah high school student mentee Joelle about her College Mentor she says I absolutely love my mentor Jessica she's always ready to hear me out and we both get along very well even though she's a senior at University and I'm a senior in high school we're able to relate to each other in terms of Life Education and our desire for higher education after graduating I appreciate her helping me in every way she can because I'll make sure to keep her
words engraved in my mind um so we continue to do good things here in Anaheim through our Partnerships um to support youth so a few um spotlights and shoutouts for that um is through our Partnerships with Disneyland Resort and through visit Anaheim um We are continuing to focus on building the next Workforce through our workplace mentoring program partnering with different Anaheim companies like I mentioned um these companies invest employees to serve as mentors and support their mentees through career Pathways um also as a pandemic response to support the growing needs of high school students we launched our College bigs program um with students from Chapman University and Cal State Fullerton um many being first generation college students um that Mentor soon to be first generation graduates so this increases our persistency and transition from high
school to college and finally um what is the impact of our program this past year 96% of Youth um within our Anaheim programs graduated high school on time and with 90% of those students maintaining or improving their grades and 71% of your staff reported improved behavior for our mentees um and so finally in honor of national mentoring month I'd be remiss if I didn't invite you all and our community to kind of join us in this mentoring movement and we're always looking for more mentors and different ways to connect um and so we really stand by that Ripple effect of when our leaders and Community gives back and the ripple effect of that um impact has on our youth so thank you just from Big Brothers Big Sisters for your partnership over so many years
and we're looking forward to continuing the impact thank you thank you any questions question any questions sorry presentation I just want to give a little testimonial I work at an elementary school so I get to see firsthand The Bigs program and uh you have a wonderful staff so thank you very much for your work good thanks glad to hear that thank you thank you all right moving on to us 8.2 our Esports yes I'm going to go ahead and bring Scott Rendell back up I'm really excited about this presentation on the update regarding uh the east east sports program in our district actually trusty piery at the College and Career Fair uh when she was walking around through the different exhibits um found our Esports exhibit and came back and as you know requested to
bring this item to the board with her excitement about what it was so tonight in perier second um we're excited to share the update so I'll go and turn over to Scott well thank you and uh and a shout out to board president Randall tro for uh joining our Esports winner tournament as well and and staying till the end that was we had we had a great time um so over the last several years Esports has been growing um in popularity world wide um and growing in the opportunities that it brings to young people who are involved in orts and at the same time we as a district have really embraced Esports and it's been it's been growing by Leaps and Bounds so um as you'll hear tonight for i' brought some of my friends
up to uh to help out with this presentation but you'll hear about the many benefits for our Esports athletes um as well as lots of connections to College and Career Success so um I ask the board and our cabinet to just keep our mission vision and core values in mind and look for those connections and I think you'll I think you'll find them throughout so joining me up front here today one of our key teacher leaders Mr Jason CER from South Junior High School he's on our leadership team so he'll come up and talk for a few minutes um and then in addition one of our key uh Partners Mr Alan Sater uh CEO of Mastery coding who's been helping us uh get our programs going so Mr Sater is going to get us started
on our presentation so I'll invite you up press enter press enter excellent so how much does a board love a clean audit right think about that for a second well kids love video games more than you love a clean audit okay that that's what we're talking about here right now so I don't know close the the idea underneath this right here is how do we Channel students passion for gaming and Technology into career and college opportunities right here so that that's kind of the schema underneath the program that is being rolled out for all of your schools we take their passion you can see across the board right here and then what we do is we lift the hood see all of these games that they so love they're giant entrepreneurial stem projects there's computer
scientists there's graphic artists there's business people there's a host of people in this industry and how big is this industry if you take all of Hollywood and combine its revenue and you take the entire music industry and combine its Revenue it is still dwarfed by the video game industry that's the size of the economic impact that gaming has across the globe and what we then do is we teach students about these opportunities but there is a host of entry points if you would because some of the introverts may like the hardware and they like to Tinker and things like that some of the extroverts might be into the broadcasting and the shout be forward facing and things like that some people who like the numbers there's operations and so forth so that's where we funnel
them into finding their own personal proclivities and then we work on getting them certified graduate right like you realize that the game you love love could be a pathway to a college scholarship or a prosperous career so that is kind of what we're doing here with this program but most significantly is we're making sure it harmonizes with the core values of the district okay we're always emphasizing character right this is school this is a school district there's protocols things like that collaboration effective teams collaborate we're overtly teaching these skills obviously creativity is fabric to success communication critical thinking um we are very direct in making sure that students see the connections between the games they love and being part of a successful Esports team and how it transfers to other endeavors Project based learning Etc
right there so what is included in the program is is there's curriculum there is career and college opportunities there's of course competition prizing Awards things like that that are all kind of baked into the DNA of this but you don't really need me I could talk about how great it is but to the credit of Jason and Scott and a lot of hardworking people in the district they just put together oh wait let me go to the research wouldn't be like teacher educa the research underneath this right here is it go for the disengaged students right like they're finding Community they're finding purpose the kids who aren't into Choir they're not into the drama club right the Esports club like they're finding a home right here and think about this we talk about Equity we
talk about Equity we talk about Equity but where else on any campus will you find that maybe a student with special needs is sitting side by side with the prom King and star basketball player and the prom King basketball has absolutely no advantage over the student was as a matter of fact he or she might be getting the floor mopped in the game they're playing like equ it's a democratization of opportunity right there which brings all people together and like I said we have a we have a white paper that we can provide for the board if you'd like on the academic benefits of gaming and research and bringing it into the classroom right here so as I was saying how do the students like it well your team put together a nice little video
right here which I'm going to take a moment to play about the inaugural event right [Music] here I do want Esports to become actually played not just with fun but competitively and I want the schools to recognize that cuz most of the schools they see as something oh you're wasting your time but we can actually be here and play competitively when gaming you are using your critical thinking skills you're communicating you're collaborating your use all of your skills put them into into something you enjoy doing being with the people playing with them let's something else you know it's like if we win we celebrate you know get high five you know just being there with people while playing is a lot better than being alone even just being on doing something I love felt good
cuz I I was in a competitive state of mind and winning felt great but yeah overall I I would like to be in the tournament again it it was fun Bravo Ronnie did you do that that was you do that one yeah [Applause] yeah so there there as I mentioned there are host of benefits from building confidence in students building voice building purpose and building Community which is obviously kind of a theme of tonight right here that are coming to the four through this program so as I mentioned a moment ago this is not a one-size fits-all this is personalized learning where students can find agency in their Endeavors to manifest opportunities in a world being changed by technology right we're talk about artificial intelligence we talk about cutting EDG Communications and the all of
that exists in this world of Esports and it you know kudos to these gentlemen right here for having the vision of ushering it in because as I've said many times before I believe every school in the country that has a basketball court on their campus will by the end of of this decade have an Esports lab because that's how popular it is and Once Upon a Time somebody say hey we should play basketball here and then the sustain it just kept rolling and rolling that's where this is going and as I said credit to these guys for bringing it in right here so thank you for allowing me to speak thank you thank you Alan and so just wanted to share just a couple of uh pieces about our our district structure around Esports we
have a leadership team that includes myself a shout out to Eric Greenwood our chief technology officer who really brought the Esports Labs uh into onto our campuses and has been a champion of uh keeping them running and keeping Esports going and and just handling all the tech sport issues very graciously uh lindsy pinin if you know her is an English teacher she's also our Esports specialist supporting Esports and our advisers uh Jason CER who's here with us today a key leader on our leadership team and a Community Schools teacher lead making those connections uh Adrian omto uh CTE teacher at Western High School Tyler Mendoza from anim achieves anim achieves was critical in getting our program uh started and then Ronnie gang from our public information office who's uh made that great video and he's
uh joined our team as well um so and Beyond the leadership team we last year were able to get Esports stiens or stiens for our esorts advisers uh into the contract to to provide that support to our our advisers the computer labs at each school we have monthly advisor me meetings and support uh we're um um registered with CIF and we're exploring uh those ins and outs of CIF now uh we have CT act pathway develop uh pathway underdevelopment at catella high school around video game design to really uh further support our students uh in exploring that and we'll expand from there uh lots of collaboration uh with our elementary feeders as well as our colleges um and and plan those districtwide tournaments so wanted to briefly give uh Mr caller a chance to talk
about some of the community connections that we're establishing as well well thank you good evening uh hello everybody um honestly I'm just I'm so proud to work in a district uh with talented people and I genuinely mean that uh it takes a team in order to make something work and I wouldn't rather be nowhere else right here and so uh big kudos to everybody who who Who's part of this and One Vision that we had uh you know as a community school teacher lead is okay how can the driving question is how do we build community Through Esports and how do we um bring down that guard of like no it's just uh addictive video games no so being at the winter tournament on 21st um I think it showed and it was evident that
that is community that is you know that's everything that we want to see in our students and just students thriving that's at the center of our community schools mission is a thriving student thriving families thriving communities and that that was showcased there so I'm honestly just very proud to stand alongside these guys and uh um that again we're going forward we're trying to continue to build this program um to give this opportunity to our students so I'll leave it there and answer any questions you guys have perfect yeah we'd be happy to answer any questions uh from the board and cabinet well wow thank you so much that was a wonderful I learned so much in just that short amount of time and I really have gained a um you know a respect for this
um that I didn't know you you taught me a lot of things so um thank you and you're humble you're very humble Jason but without without you this wouldn't exist I know you've worked very hard and pass and you have such a passion for the kids so so thank you uh any questions from the board um um no questions but just echoing that thank you so much for your leadership and bringing that um I know the students really enjoy it I got to see some of it at Sima paloa so very exciting so thank you so much awesome you deserve Kudos thank you thank you I just did what they said I've been in in the in the classrooms and at the steam of Pala and um all great looking forward to more awesome we'll
bring it awesome yep I've just uh you had mentioned all the different Industries is there uh something that we're looking at to get um our students some sort of a certificate in their hand absolutely so Scott mentioned the game design pathway which is sort of CTE aligned right there come on for our online oh sorry about that so the question was um are there any certifications industry based certifications so there's uh there are programs that can earn industry accredited certification in game design which um you know low into the a through G requirements for college entrance and we are seeing that your students they're not just going to leave high school with a diploma they're going to leave high school with a diploma plus perhaps multiple certifications and portfolios of their work because the world
has changed right here and it's not just about the degree on the wall but it's can you show and demonstrate competency at a particular skill and so all of that is baked into the program that sort of Scott is ushering in right now thank you so much and I witness the community at the event and the camaraderie the students were just really cheering for each other and and I love to see that so I'm looking forward to the next one thank you great thank you let's give them another round of applause okay we're moving on to public comments and I would just like to say opportunities for public comments Ur at the beginning of each agenda item and at this time uh I for items not on the agenda persons wishing to address the board
should have uh completed a speaker request form and um each speaker is limited to a maximum of three minutes and uh board members cannot immediately respond to public comments as stated on the speaker request form uh first person I'd like to bring up is Christopher V welcome testing testing um good evening everybody uh my name is Christopher Vite uh I'm a member of the Navajo Nation um I'm here to represent all of our uh our native youth our native students that are attending uh the schools here in the district and uh we're just seeking out to um create a uh a change for our community such as changing the name changing the name of the mascot um we believe that uh has a a deep and cult impact on our people um not only with
the past trauma but all of our uh experiences that we've faced with as a indigenous people of the land um we're not only thinking to changing the name but hoping to also allow the students to have a cultural sense of like their background and stuff like that allowing maybe like classes or stuff like that to to really give um our youth uh a tool to like you know really seek out um The Roots and where they you know where they really come from and all that so that's what we're really hoping to to achieve in the past not the past but the next uh I want to say month or so maybe maybe even more but um yeah that's kind of all I have to say but thank you for your time um it's an
honor to be here um we're hoping to really you know push this through and uh really see a future where like our our youth you know have that uh how do I say uh the chance really to know more about their culture Ro s and you know about their background so thank you thank you uh MOS good afternoon everybody of the Tang in the land of the tang and I want to first thank you so much for the L acknowledgement that's very important um and Chris is actually an also alumni from Anaheim high school I just want to uh share and thank you guys for having this book taught at Anaheim high school and the English class there there we had an event at the Anaheim Colony behind Anaheim high school and I want to
read one chapter and it's teaching the students you know the Mexican Cho indigenous Or Hispanic Latino whatever is political politically correct and in this chapter in the first chapter talks about the colonist and uh it really strikes you know our hearts and our minds like Chris was saying we're going to start creating more um dialogues and more uh presentations and having people I think it's important to speak there I'm going to start off with this in 1621 colist in invited chief mazaz of the wapo after recent land deal Chief maso came with 90 of his men that meal is why we still eat a meal together in November celebrated as a nation but that one wasn't a Thanksgiving meal it was a landal meal 2 years later there was another similar meant to symbolize internal
friendship quote unquote 200 indans dropped dead that night from an unknown Poison by the colonist Chief met Comet took over was beheaded as well by the colonist this membered and qu quartered they tied his four body sections to nearby trees for the bricks to pluck for the birds to pluck he was given the M comet's hand which she kept in a jarve to Rum and for years took around with him charged people to see his hand of the Native metac comet's head was sold in pouth Colony for 30 Shillings that going rate of the Indian head at that time the head was put on a spike carried through the streets of Plymouth and displayed in Pou for the next 25 years but thank you I think that's my time oh okay okay and but um
I just want to end by saying that yes we got to keep teaching the students I know it's kind of hard for some of the students or even some of us here natives or non-natives to to hear or to be taught this in the school curriculum I graduated from the class of 98 and I graduated from the Native American arts school I went to Fon College to Cho history Cho studies Jerry Padia DEA Lopez took speech at Cyprus S I had a college and I wanted to go to Native American college arts school and and I got my degrees in ass in Fine Arts and liberal art studies and the bachelor's degrees a minor creative and so I I write plays so hopefully something will be pished in the future in a book but thank
you so much for having this book there and I know it's going to be changed I had a vision we had a vision a dream in a sweat lodge we fast we don't drink no drugs or alcohol and you don't eat meat and you faint and you have a vision one day maybe we can invite you all to come to a s LOD and touch yourself it doesn't matter what color you are we're all indigenous to some part of the continent and we love you guys and like chief M I mean sorry uh voka said we must not hate the white man because that would only delay our Victory thank you so much thank you David Lopez welcome all right thank you good evening my name is D I go by D I'm a local
educator former former social worker former biologist natural resource manager um I'm I'm here today to follow up on uh what my my friends here spoke about um I also believe that the colonist logo or brand of the school should be changed and I'll try to be concise here I know we get three minutes um there's a number of things on my mind when when I'm here speaking in front of you which thank you again thank you for your time I didn't even say that thank you for your time and the opportunity to speak um one thing that that comes to mind is uh what I was like in high school right um I believe that my experience in the education system you know I feel as though the education system failed me in the sense
that um it did not teach me about my identity in a truthful way in an inclusive way um in fact I know that there are parts of history that are completely erased and absent from textbooks and I know that um thankfully you know that that is changing um you know from if I understood correctly that book um that masat uh mentioned is now a part of the school curriculum so that that's awesome you know we have things like this where you know you have a land acknowledgement which is which is also a good thing and in my opinion it is also the land acknowledgement for one is is a performative measure right it's something that you know we can appreciate and we can read and it can be acknowledged at the same time it doesn't
necessarily have tangible impact right and I believe that changing removing the colonist brand would have tangible impact right it would be an opportunity to have um real real change um and you know if if I'm understanding correctly right we have those books in our curriculum you know we we changed the mascot um uh the image of the mascot right um from the the pilgrim um you know why not be consistent and also uh change is that my time or do I have more time one more minute okay why not be consistent and and change it alog together and one one counterargument that I would anticipate someone saying is that um I understand that the student body had a chance to um to vote and um I believe 41% voted to keep it and 59% voted
to either uh change it or Rebrand it or completely remove it all together um and so like like I was saying earlier you know when I was in high school I I didn't have this knowledge of my own native identity I didn't uh know um basically who I was and we all know that as humans we we want we need a sense of belonging uh the sense of identity is critical to a person's development and for Native kids in particular in this country um it's it's something that is again erased uh kept from them and something that really they have to go through life finding it themselves and and if they're surrounded by places or even you know educational places that don't give them that information well they don't have that opportunity so I believe
my time is up I won't go over time again thank you for for listening I really hope that that y'all can take our words to heart and you know we present this in a respectful way in a way that hopefully we will'll have change right tangible impact action and actually not just talking about something but having the actions match match the words right so thank you appreciate it thank you all right our next speaker Brad manami welcome can I have more than three minutes please no I'm just kidding no I think it's the first time I've came up as a public speaker you know but um as you know I'm Brad bami director of purchasing and Central Services with the district until tomorrow um I I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the board
um thank cabinet you know thank my colleagues for all that you guys have done for me through the years um I'll try to make this quick um thank you board for you know being selfless leaders that selfless leaders that you've been you know I always think of the students you know always think of the community you always think of Staff before you make your decisions and um I'm I'm grateful for that um you know I've been here for 15 years and I've served you know some of you for the whole 15 years and um it's been a great journey um Mr M to thank you for being a disruptor you know setting examples for apis um such as myself um have encourage to be uh vulnerable and mindful uh with your decisions um thanks cabinet
for being leaders that create paths for all of us to be successful sorry getting choked up um C uh do nean you know thank you for your support thank you for the apple pies for the record I like the regular crust and you know the the crumble you can just get rid of the crumble because I like the regular crust um colleagues thank you for all the projects and you know um the collaborated efforts that we've had you know we've completed a lot together um I also want to thank uh the warehouse graphic arts and the purchasing staff uh for being the unsung heroes in the background um you know they've elevated the district to new levels um there isn't a place in the district you can go where they haven't um you know bought
designed printed or delivered things um you know on time and you know made a difference in the district um I can still remember like it was yesterday um 15 years ago with my first board meeting here um you know Dr fary was the superintendent he called me up to the podium introduced me you know had me talk a little bit about myself and then um Mr ol was up there on the on the dice at the time you know and he asked me Miss Monami you know you've been here two weeks what kind of changes are you going to make I'm thinking to myself oh my gosh it's been two weeks you know so of course I tap Dan around Mr Hogan's questions you know I say hey you it's a little too early to
make any kind of changes you know but one of the things I reflect back on now it's not what are the changes that I was going to make but what kind of changes the district made on me you know so from the bottom of my heart I'd like to thank you um you know I wish you all the best um I look forward to continue to support ahsd in my new role with the Orange County Department of Ed um I'll be working with the business staff still I'll still be seeing you know Joe Karen you know probably monthly and Nancy monthly you know at the CBO meeting so you know you know I'm going to be around and I'll be in a good support role to you know help move our business systems forward um
in the future so you know thank you and uh I appreciate you all we appreciate [Applause] you oh we're going to miss you Brad thank you can I say something yes hey Brad before you step out I just want to acknowledge you um one of the many unsung heroes that we have in the business side of the house but uh and there are many stories um that really epitomize your wisdom and Leadership but I do want to share with the audience that during the height of the pandemic when there's a lot of money being pushed out on all kinds of gadgets and things and millions of dollars other districts were SP spending all kinds of money on on things and I remember that you told me to because you had the experience and you had
the wisdom and when the supply and demand of everything from masks to those acrylic dividers that other districts were buying you said just hold on right hold on and uh let's uh uh you know be patient here and I think that you deserve a lot of credit for saving a lot of money that other districts I think wasted on a lot of things so that's just one of many uh unsung things that you did not to mention your work with the Innovative Furniture as well so there's many many things that you've done and I want to thank you for that and your wisdom and now you'll be able to share that with the entire County so thank you thank [Applause] you okay all right are you ready for item 10.3 School sponsored student organizations this

Miss Smith hi Miss Guerrero hi Miss tro I all right business services 10.8 agreement with food finders Inc action item so moved second questions or comments I I just think this is a fabulous idea I wish that we've been doing this for a long time but we're going to do start doing it now so um so um orand if you want to come up so we have been doing them but um one of the things that we want to um make sure that they want to have an um agreement in place so but's going to provide us with a little bit more information and um it it took a um some time to actually get an agreement since you know it's not that simple because there's a lot of things involved so I want to
do want orando kind of speak about that a little bit all right our agreement with food finders is simply just formalizing the process we've always had an agreement with we've always had an informal agreement with food finders where they have picked up food on a periodic basis we're also probably going to be coming to the board in the future with another agreement with a bound uh food care uh because we want to be able to have multiple agreements with multiple agencies that can pick up food when another agency might not be available um most of the food that we would be picking up would be at the District Central Kitchen uh and that's really on a very periodic basis irregular basis primarily right before holidays when we might not have when we might have an
excess amount of food that can't be used in the schools uh primarily in the elementary program when the elementary program closes down and it might be food that can't be used in the in the high schools or in the secondary schools so that might be food that would be picked up uh it happens on a very rare basis as a matter of fact this I think we gave away 25 cases of baby carrots right at the the end of the uh right before the holiday so it doesn't it's not doesn't amount to a lot of food but it is going to for a good cause to food pantries every every little bit counts so thank you so much for doing this thank you for your explanation appreciate it all right all in favor I I

over 80 guests from uh probably a couple dozen school districts across the state of California so awesome work to the entire team thank you I was going to share that but I'll share I'll share also Echo uh the just a great work for Ed staff um last Friday we hosted through the work of Carlos's Department uh parent Summit AT C state flon so uh we had a bunch of parents there we had actually two of our counselors Penny hes and Cecilia sanis do an amazing job presenting one of the sessions uh on the work of our district to our incoming uh seventh grade families that are going to be coming into to our district so just a great job around and also today I want to highlight Anaheim High School um today was visit was
at Anaheim and I want to give a shout out to Ruben I don't know that he's watching but to him and his team they did an amazing job with the visit um highlighting and showcasing the great work at Anaheim uh we got comments when they came back and I know I wasn't at Anaheim today when they did the visit but back when they came back and they indicated um very clearly the the feeling and the vibe that they felt on a campus and they thought that was kind of odd that a high school campus to not feel chaotic and overwhelming when Anaheim obviously one of our largest schools in the district um had the sense of calm in welcome on their campus so just kudos to the school to the team and of course to
Carlos and the team on the great day today and on another note we had a separate visit from the Fontana Unified School District uh that spent the day over at Gilbert High School and um they were basically saying the same thing that they have not seen an Al program as uh great as what they saw at Gilbert in terms of the culture we're talking about school culture which is a hard thing to uh really move the needle on and iose say to shout out to you and your staff for creating an inclusive environment thank you um well I would just like to collectively put out our love and support for trusty piery and I know she's watching this evening and just to let you know that we are with you and thinking about you I
have a couple items here first of all I want to thank Anaheim high school for an amazing ribbon cutting ceremony for the track and field um last Monday want a special shout out to the principal Ruben Cayo as well as the two ASB advisers Jackie rodari as well as Doug wedger thank you so much it was an in impressive event and thank you so many of the um board members for attending as well so I think the school were absolutely in love with the feel and everyone else is asking for their F now so just FY I'm getting a lot of requests so um so second thing is I did attend the um Western High School the film um fourth and go it was an amazing event so thank you so much coach Davidson as

his work for 15 years thank you oh one more thing the gamut is has come out by um Oxford Academy it's a newspaper that they've put out and it's wonderful uh it's very impressive I don't think we've ever had a school do this but it's not short it's a read and a half and it takes a lot of effort to be I'm going to leave it here in case anyone would like to see it but it's very impressive thank you Mr Smith Miss Guerrero thank you um I had the opportunity to attend the uh Southern California School nutrition association meeting and share my story as an Anaheim student um and recipient of free and reduced lunch so thank you for ahd food services for the opportunity and I also want to thank Senator umberg uh

I too also attended the um CR Coran theater um viewing of fourth and gold we're so proud of um of our uh Victor and um I learned so much more than football watching a football movie um coach Davidson um teaches uh each one of his students to have character and that's what I learned from the movie and um I was ribbing um my uh colleague when when they were showing the the bell game with Anaheim and Western I was watching her face she's premising a little bit just a little bit but um kudos to um to to Victor and and and his team for putting that on and I I understand he's going to be um putting that through the uh the the the documentary circuit so wish him luck um if he can win
some awards but I I think it was remarkable it was only about an hour and a half and I think we all could have sat there and watched another hour or two of it it was it was that moving um I also uh just wanted to mention what some of our speakers had talked about um uh you know their their their concerns on um I just wanted to highlight that um on December 14th um we had our first um Native American Education task force so um and actually Dr um La uh is on that committee and so um you know I don't think there um is anything like this in any other District um I would be surprised if if there is but I think Anaheim is is doing its utmost most to um meet

not you know casual reading but after the second chapter it was it was um it was um it flowed but um Bravo to you yeah you know it's an it's an educational read it's it's you know it's not you have to be paying attention to it so and it's coming out on audio book it's coming in on audio I love that I love that so congratulations to you and I challenge each and every one of you to to finish this book you will be so proud of the work that you are all doing and that's highlighted so thank you so much and um all right advance planning our next meeting will be February 15th um 6 o'clock right here I uh entertain a motion second hey all in favor I hi hi thank you
