029that the Board of Trustees the cabinet and the bargaining team of Asta did this week we are so pleased to announce that we have a tentative agreement reached for the 22-23 school year it was a relatively quick process this year with some quick movement between the parties this is an agreement that we feel shows the the Gratitude and appreciation that the district feels for all of its employees and their value to The District in everything that they do I just wanted to appreciate uh asta's bargaining team and our executive board that have worked so hard to bring our members together it wasn't just our members this year we had csca members we had asked me members who came together in appreciation of each other to work together as one kind of bargaining group to look

030at what it is that we felt was a reasonable agreement this year and the uh District the trustees and the district leadership came together with us and agreed with what we thought was a a reasonable affordable agreement that showed appreciation and value to everything that everyone is doing so greatly appreciate that I would also like to say uh trustee Jabar you've been on this board for eight years and not only have you been a representative to your area and to the entire District our schools and families and Community you are also a true Ally and friend of Labor whether it is organized or just working class folks doing what they need to do and that has always been greatly appreciated from our association whether I was president or we had leaders before you were always

037in really beautiful ways so that is my update for this month thank you so much thank you all right so we go now into presentations and 8.1 is the North Orange County Regional occupational program presentation yeah so thank you board president Jabar and per the request of the board we invited uh Gail kyrus who's one of our friends and partners with the North Orange County ROP and she's going to actually lead our presentation tonight on some student testimonials uh in terms of great work that we are doing as a district in partnership with our friends at ROP someone turn over to Gail who'll introduce our students and lead us through the presentation thank you well good evening the mission of North Orange County ROP is to work in partnership with the Anaheim Union High School

038District to equip and empower the young people of our community for their career and ultimately their life success in the 21st century we do this fully aware that in such a rapidly changing and advancing world there's no way to know exactly what where the jobs in the workforce will look like but what we do know is that when we sow the seeds of innovation entrepreneurship and purpose into the fertile soil of basic technical skills our young people grow strong ready and confident recently superintendent Matt suda has been sharing with the district and Community leadership the work of Raj Chetty he's a professor of public economics at Harvard and Professor chetty's research says what's on the screen here exposure to Innovation substantially increases the chances that children become inventors he cites research that Innovation is widely

039viewed as the engine of economic growth and we know that economic growth starts with an individual first and then fuels the economy of our communities so this evening we have students speaking from three of our Innovative entrepreneurial programs entrepreneurship and self-employment biotechnology the iLab Mac summer internship first we have Christopher and Chris is in the entrepreneur and self-employment pathway at Gilbert High School so using the Knowledge and Skills that he gained from taking this course of study and with the support of his father Chris designed and created an original clothing line filed all the paperwork with his dad and opened an online business so this is Chris's story [Applause] um at the age of 15 I had to relieve my family behind due to family reasons and financial reasons I came here with my dad

040and I had a mission in Canada which was to help out my family and start a new business the background was tough so that's what gave me a boost of motivation to not let my parents down and to not give up I heard about this program at the beginning of my junior year of high school I I was in pass I heard it through announcement the principal came up to me and he told me about the program that I can help you design stuff start a business and knowing the situation I was in I for sure took that decision and that was the best decision I ever made I remember one of the first times I entered the ROP program we had a guest speaker talking about how he started a clothing brand and how

041well it went for him and I took that too hard because I wanted to always do something big and for me a clothing brand is something that if I get somebody to wear my clothes I want them to feel special confident and stylish in a way in this program I learned everything how to start a business how to become a entrepreneur and how to start designing everything you need you learn the basics of how to reach your targeted audience how to do marketing how to get catchy um products so people can start buying it and from there on I started my brand I started helping a student here do marketing and you know I started doing my own stuff and I made lots of deals it gave me lots of you know a good financial

042aid for my family so during the program I learned how to create my website we started learning how to do entrepreneurship you know speaking in front of people how to prepare for marketing how to create logos how to create slogans mission statements how to do our website aesthetically pleasing and overall how to Target our audience all that I learned through the program ROP Business and Entrepreneurship so this program means a lot to me not because it helped me help my help my person they can also teach you how to overcome your fears how to not give up you know if you're not feeling it's because you're not trying and this is what we learned here that every path you take every failure you take is a step so if you we can't give up and

043I encourage lots of new people that want to take all of these to give it a shot because you never know and if it feels scary for you that's when you want to take it or else you'll end up staying that moment in your whole life so risk not the regret on this program has helped me a lot and this is you know the examples I made have had lots of coding projects coming in soon and you guys can hopefully see them and try them on thank you secondary education but he was uncertain as to what that would be he found Direction in biotechnology at Anaheim high school and this is sukavirus story I don't know biotech was a thing but my grades were they were decent but I didn't really have much ambition and

044the way I actually heard about biotech was through my girlfriend she was in the third period and she was telling me about it and I was actually very interested I was actually very excited when I joined the class I sort of took a a leader role in the class my grades suddenly were increasing because I was like okay I think I actually have a plan for my future before my thought was take two years of a language take two years of a major and whatever College I want to go to might want to go to a lower ranking college but I started thinking a lot more about my future once I actually joined biotech I became more enthusiastic I I actually started caring about my grades I started looking into dual enrollment started looking into

045summer schools I'm trying to get college credits seeing and seeing what I could do for my future when it comes to the class itself I actually I'm always very excited to come in like I get in the class first thing we do we put in we put on our protective equipment we go on over to our station have our notebooks ready when it comes to working the actual buffers themselves we make the chemicals and of course use them and it feels like an actual professional lab I feel very fortunate and lucky when it comes to the programs and all that the school offers because I have friends from other schools and I tell them about the programs and all the different opportunities that we have here and they're like what we don't even have a

046half as much as you guys have I feel like I made the right decision when it came to the school that I joined I now believe that I'll have a good future at least I hope a lot of people call me ambitious but I think that's a very nice personality trait to have all in all I think that this program has actually helped me a lot and it's made me think it's basically it's given me a different perspective hopefully maybe I can get a job in the biotech business later on during my future [Music] if you're here supporting sugavir would you please stand up thank you and next we have Monty and Monty takes full advantage of every opportunity and that was including the iLab Max summer internship where he's grown tremendously in his communication

047and Leadership skills he's also discovered his desire to make a difference in his community by pursuing a career in public and Community Health and this is Monty's story my name is for short and I am a student at Magnolia High School and this is my story so back in 2010 my family and I immigrated here from Iraq um for them to for them to to provide me and my and my siblings a better future for ourselves so one thing that really took a huge part in the person I am today is the school district at Anaheim Union High School District if it wasn't for the district if it wasn't for the different opportunities that they offered for the students I don't think I would have been the kid who who was going to go speak

048to the capital about the concerns of our community over the summer I was able to be an intern at the Mac where we collaborated with the with the Western iLab to create a business plan for the Mac the big Garden we have in the back of our school um not only were we able to create a business plan we were also able to to educate students families and community members on different health issues different ways to be healthy and also on different ecological issues to make sure that people know that in Anaheim there's a lot of food deserts and there's a lot of there's a lot of areas where where it's really hard for people to to get access to Affordable fresh food so my biggest goal in life was to make my parents proud

049and let me tell you this I can for sure say that my parents are really really really proud of me um before before I was able to join the internship at the the Magnolia agriscience Community Center also known as the Mac I was a person who was really confused of what I wanted to do in life and confused on what I wanted to major in but after after going through these different these different job training skills and these different um the just different educational opportunities that the Mac provided for me and the iLab provided for me I was able to to kind of put together my life in a way and be sure on what I want to do now I want to I want to major in public health foreign if you are here

050supporting Monty would you please stand up [Applause] so so as we were saying um Professor chatty's research says that when young people are exposed to Innovation they begin to invent and these students are proof that all those those future Einsteins that might otherwise have been lost can be found with opportunity our young people have the ability and the freedom to invent who and what they are and what they want to become they find their purpose and you know purpose is something that runs deep in the heart of a person and it takes insightful strategies and programs such as these and you know as as I was watching the videos and looking around the room and seeing drone technology Savannah Medical Academy we're hearing about the Mac lab biotechnology iLab all of these off the charts

051Innovative programs that are being offered it opens the world up in in just huge ways and so um according to all the research that's what makes the difference in the lives of our young people and again these students are examples of that and so um purpose the purpose that comes from this readies and fortifies our young people for the 21st century workplace whatever it ends up looking like and it opens the door to their future so gentlemen proud parents you've joined the ranks of Einstein's found president Jabar we're going to miss you trustees and Superman attendant mad suit I'm sure he's watching online thank you again for the opportunity to partner with you as inventors and innovators ourselves as we create student-focused real world cutting-edge experiences for our students such an amazing amazing journey and

052we are so grateful for being able to take it with you and we really appreciate that thank you so much all right well I'll open up the flow for comments from board members if you would like it's phenomenal I is that working okay um you're gonna be congratulated you guys young men have done really well it's and we do have some great programs and I am so proud that we work together with the North Orange County ROP and have developed some phenomenal Pathways and we're known for it because we're giving our kids an opportunity and you know they're taking advantage of it and they're really learning and we're having more and more and it's just great so thank you and good luck young men very much so foreign we had a chance to hear Christopher's

053testimonial there and and other students in the entrepreneurship and it's just um that's just one example of the the many as you mentioned Pathways that that ROP is partnering in and a and auhsd what I love and what what I feel is that the theme in in what I heard tonight was all of you are doing this in some way to help you know to help your families to help the community to help the greater good and that really to me is powerful in the work that we're all doing and and Gail without you my goodness we need to apply to you um the work that that you you provide um in getting the the medical by by otechnology yes and you were in the room as well and getting that going um working on

054collaboration with the folks at Anaheim High School I mean to get that up in the time frame that that got up was phenomenal uh do um greatly to your work um and and Robert you were there too um just uh is amazing this is this is the future we were talking about this a couple years ago the jobs that um that are being inventive as we as we speak and we're on top of it their labor and so congratulations to you thank you so much for coming and giving us well good evening I had the pleasure of serving 14 years with ROP and it was 10 years ago that I terminated the 14 years and I am stunned tonight to see what a different world ROP is today than when I served on the board

055when I say different world I don't even know how to put that in frame that because it was a new world I enjoyed your presentations I wish you well really I would say exciting for you to go into fields that you love and are enjoying and sharing with the public what you did tonight and all you wonderful folks that run ROP I want to thank you and to your loved ones and your family members and friends that are here to support you I just high five all of you thank you for being here foreign that they say but um I think Christopher I I was just amazed I'm glad that I bought that t-shirt now I could hold on to it when you become uh very famous I come back and maybe sell it for

056even more right no I just wanted to congratulate on your success and uh I wanted Echo I don't think people caught it but he was one of the folks who actually did the marketing for one of the students who actually came here last year to present and he actually presented uh when he was actually when he designed bookmarks I remember purchasing some bookmarks from him as well so the story continues right you helped him with his marketing but then you went on to start your own product and do this and I was amazed listening to your story about you selling the products in Mexico and how it became a success story so keep on telling your story so that you could motivate more of your classmates and come back and talk about the story because

057I think that's what the dream of Anaheim youth is going to be so thank you for doing what you're doing foreign I'm glad that your girlfriend told you about the class but you know that's that again that's a success story right yeah for you to be hooked on to um a a program that you're really passionate about and got your grades up and wanting to now pursue this field so again come back and talk about your story because that's how we're going to get most of our youth to be engaged in our education I'm glad that auhsd has given a platform for our young young people to do it and Monty man um I know you're going places um I can tell you from the time that I saw you first interacting with me to

058now interacting about everything from not only our farm but about iLab I know you're going to be very very successful and you're going to not only make a uhsd proud most importantly you're going to be making your parents proud um and I I can tell you that um one day I will sit there and say that I shook his hand and he I knew him so uh just keep on talking about this and thank you Gail for actually spearheading this for ROP as well I'm so sorry that I missed the last board meeting I was sick so I couldn't make it send my regards to all of them but I just wanted to be very Frank I think you guys are doing some amazing work not only at auhsd but all over in other partner

059districts as well so thank you for your service as well appreciate it [Applause] sure at ROP meeting the students that were showcased with the entrepreneurship they raised money and that money that they they raised they gave back to the Gilbert Community for their their Pantry so I just wanted to applaud those students they they did that yes it they raised the money and then they gave it back to the school so um it's just amazing wow amazing all the good work that will go around so thank you all right we're going to go into 8.2 and work experience opportunity at Magnolia agree science Community Center take it away Dr Jared I am excited to bring up this next presentation as well which will actually be a great extension of what we just saw with our

060partnership with ROP but I'm going to bring up our director of innovative programs and instructional systems uh it's Amy Quan and she's going to do a team but a lot of great work that took place not just this summer in partnership with the city and the great programs that we have but it's also continuing into the school year and and hopefully even going beyond that so with that return over to miss Quan thank you it's very fitting to go right after Gail and the presentation you just saw but good evening everyone good evening Board of Trustees president Jabar executive cabinet and auhsd Community as Dr freed said my name is Amy Kwan I'm the director of innovative programs and instructional systems and I get the great pleasure of working with amazing groups and organizations not

061only in auhsd but all across the city and today I get to share with you about an awesome opportunity to auhsd students that started this summer where 10 of our auhsd students were employed by the city of Anaheim at an hourly wage above minimum wage for 30 hours a week for eight weeks their summer job was to help solve food insecurity climate change and provide economic relief in Anaheim and they got to do that right here in auhsd right from the Magnolia agriscience Community Center and iLab before we talk about the experience I do want to share the context in which made in which this was all made possible this is truly a reflection of our Anaheim collaborative at work so not only of our Anaheim collaborative working with ROP that you just heard about

062today you get to hear about the very well established and amazing partnership that we have with the city of Anaheim that we were able to give our students this incredible work-based experience so last year Governor Newsom announced the youth job corpse Grant designed to help youth find employment and gain critical skills while making a positive lasting impact on their communities Marco Lucero right here Workforce Development manager for the city of Anaheim knew exactly who to reach out to he made a call immediately to MJ cook a uhsd's aim program director and Scott Rendell the coordinator of 21st century Readiness career Readiness and MJ and Scott both immediately thought about the mac and iLab and with the leadership of Dr Sabina giacomis the science teacher and Mac coordinator at Magnolia and Doug Noah the iLab teacher

063at Western and together we were able to come up with a proposal that was accepted and now I would like to invite Marco Lucero to come talk about the parameters of the Grant and what solidified his decision in choosing auhsd students to be recipients of the grant uh good evening auhd auhsd Board of Trustees auhsd leadership and the auhsd community my name is Marco Lucero I am the Workforce Development manager for the city of Anaheim also the executive director of the Anaheim Workforce Development board and it is my pleasure to be here to talk about this opportunity uh just something to know that this is really the the the latest and latest example of the great relationship the city of Anaheim has enjoyed with the Anaheim Union High School District I can recall day my

064days working very collaboratively collaboratively with the school district when they provided the jobs training Partnership Act summer program and year-round programs the workforce uh Innovation I'm sorry Workforce investment act youth programs and so now I'm really pleased to talk about this latest iteration of what we've done with this Cal Californians for all youth job score Grant this was an opportunity that was presented to the 13 largest cities in California late last year actually around this time and there wasn't a lot of definition around what we had to do with this grant other than we had to provide meaningful work experience to youth which as you can see are Divine very broadly on the uh as far as the parameters go from 6 to ages 16 to 30 but but really focused on engaging them in

065public sector work or work that affected the community in some way to instill this idea of of becoming a public sector a worker a civil servant and contributor to the community part of that was focusing on one of three issue areas that was as Amy mentioned tied to either addressing the impacts of climate change addressing food insecurity or the recovery from the from the coveted pandemic and this is one of one of those projects when we looked at what was submitted really fit within all those categories but just about just a bit about how that came together because that's really what's important here is I think because of the relationship because of my knowledge of what was happening in in who to contact at the school district it really meant for something to happen very

066urgently and quickly for something to be put together really it was I was given this opportunity to apply for this 4.8 million dollars in grant funding uh which was really outstanding for us to receive this but then I had a month to put together the application and to gather input from parties that would be capable of doing something like this so my first call was to to MJ to find out is what can we do and here are the issue areas and I want to say that your team should be very proud of them within a weekend they put together a summary that was very it was it was a very brief summary but it hit all the right points and told the story of what could be achieved and what I didn't know at

067the time was that this wasn't something that was already fully formulated and ready to go just an off-the-shelf program this was something that was really just a dream I'd say and that was really impressive to me so just give you an example I submitted this we I said I got the application in late November pass that on to the team your team here got the proposals back we we fine-toothed it a little bit words missed it submitted at the end of December so this is all and it's the holidays this is literally a year ago and if you look at the pictures here you can see that as of January of this year there was nothing in the field that later became the Mac Garden and you can see that's just six months later what

068a tremendous effort was accomplished by by the whole team and particularly by these youth so it was my pleasure to be able to to come in and fund that aspect of it right because I I'm sure that there would have been youth who would have volunteered to be able to do this kind of activity and and participate but really you know this this was an opportunity to to get a work-based learning activity in front of these Youth and provide them with some with some with some some spending cash I hope for the for the summer time so if for our for us it was it was a win this was the first project that we initiated under this grant it was the first project that we've completed under this Grant and in fact the other

069projects have just barely initiated just a few months you know several months later since the summer so just truly remarkable how quickly this all came together to talk more in detail about the program itself and I mean what what the what was actually accomplished I want to introduce now uh Sabina jakovis thank you [Applause] good evening my name is Sabina jokmus I'm a science teacher at Magnolia High School I've been there for 16 years and this year I am a teacher on special assignment working at the med as the project coordinator of the Magnolia agriscience Community Center so this summer I had the pleasure of working with 10 of our auhsd students and thank you there we go thank you um and so when we started to think about what we wanted this internship to

070look like again within one week we knew that we had the resources and we knew that we had the expertise to give our students a meaningful work opportunity and we knew that we had the Mac farm and we knew that we had the iLab to be used as an asset so we interviewed and we offered the opportunity to attend auhsd students many of them who are in the room with us here tonight from Magnolia High School and from Western High School and we selected specifically students in their interviews who showed passion for solving Community issues and wanting to learn about Urban farming practices so we chose three 12th graders who have now graduated three 11th graders who are now seniors and four 10th graders who are now Juniors so our objectives for the job position

071was to allow students to solve food insecurity to think about ways to solve climate change through Urban farming and to provide covid relief through using food as medicine eating healthy in Anaheim using the Mac in the iLab as assets so we set up a structure we're under the guidance of our two agricultural Engineers who work at the Mac Farm Jackie Perez and Jose moscada Doug Noah the teacher at iLab and myself the students spent two days a week at the at the Mac farm and three days a week with Doug Noah over at the iLab so um see is there anything special I need to do you use a keyboard thank you [Laughter] so in order to ensure that our students had a meaningful work based experience we centered our proposal to Marco around our

072cpsf drivers and so we included elements of 21st century skills technical skills and youth voice and purpose so at the Mac our students were able to gain technical skills of regenerative and organic farming practices they were able to learn about irrigation systems crop rotation seasonal planting harvesting agricultural impacts and at the iLab they were able to do research on social financial and political impacts of living in a food desert and I think this is part of the piece that was that was really changing for a lot of us to see our students go out into the community and to be able to see what the issues were and how are we going to use the assets that we have in the auhsd to solve some of the issues and needs that we have so they

073were able to create an awareness campaign pain to the community they were able to develop and deliver a business plan of their produce boxes which many of you have have received and they were able to develop and conduct a market research to determine the demand and affordable and access to Affordable and accessible food options and they also since many of our schools are California democracy schools they also prepared soapbox speeches which I believe you will hear one of them tonight with a personal connection to the vision of the Mac so as Marco said we kept our job description very broad because we wanted to see what our students could do when given the opportunity to solve issues in their own community so next I'd like to invite one of those students that worked as an

074intern at the mac and iLab this summer Amanda Jacoby foreign when we first joined I didn't really know what to expect to be quite honest I was just jazzed about the fact that I was going to be getting paid um working at my farm at my school our first project was research everyone every one of the interns was giving different attendance areas and I got Katella and South as you can see on the screen you see this is the statistics that came from the high school in junior high I was immediately shocked by the Numbers considering the surrounding areas like Disney and Angel Stadium being just minutes away as you can see the 81 and 87 of low income it showed me that food deserts were issue were an issue greater than just the Magnolia

075community on June 9th is when we had our first harvest um excuse me we knew that for we knew that food desserts were a big issue but we had the great resource at the Mac going into our first harvest was very rewarding for all of our interns at the end we were told that we would be able to decide what what we do with the produce at first we were overwhelmed with all the produce that was given to us um but that we then realized that it was very cool to be able to figure out what we wanted to do rather than being told what to do we used our first harvest as market research this led to some trial and error as in if you were there you would know that we had our

076wet paper bags that had water leaking out with the produce but from that we also got research on how much people would be willing to spend on our boxes because of the market research we wanted to move forward and do some sort of um giving back program which led to the get and give initiative this is a way to solve food deserts and provide affordable and accessible produce to families as a donation that comes with each purchase boxes were priced at twenty dollars with the retail value of 32 dollars with the idea of the produce boxes along also came all the logistics such as ordering boxes figuring out a branding plan inventory and packaging solving food deserts isn't just about making healthy food options available it also includes educating our community so they can choose

077healthy food options as well part of the get and give was a way to connect and support our community to make healthy food options a part of their regular routines at the iLab we created iLab kits that included a kitchen tool to encourage healthy food practices such as a leaf stripper recipes and stories to celebrate the diversity in our community students also wanted to celebrate our culturally Rich Community by adding in personal story stories and recipes that related to their cultural dishes that ran in their family for years as you can see on July 7th we had our first Green Goodness packs and that was when our business officially got started now you may be asking where do all of these 400 boxes go well over 3 500 pounds of the food was donated to

078family was donated to families in Anaheim through the Ponderosa Park Family Resource Center Project SAFE auhsd communities and straight to students through our nutritional service program with such a successful business it inspired other local non-profits in Anaheim such as Katarina's Club to be a part of our Mac movement Katarina's Club has dedicated has committed to purchasing 10 boxes a week that they can donate to families in Anaheim another part of our summer internship was to create a soapbox Beach that we made personal connections with and next is your colleague Monty to share his story thank you [Applause] kind of tall okay um right now there are 23 and a half million Americans including six and a half million children that live in what is called a food desert which they mainly exist in inner cities

079and rural areas for those of you who don't know a food desert is defined as a geographical location where where families or residents have little to no access to Affordable fresh food hello everyone my name is Monty for sure and I live in the food desert in fact I am an immigrant who left Iraq and and ended up in Anaheim California the same Anaheim known for the happiest place on Earth in Disneyland and also home to it also just miles away from beautiful Southern California beaches home of the Anaheim Ducks and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim why my family has benefited from the land of our opportunity and have been able to make the life that they envisioned for us one thing that we left behind um is access to healthy and nutritious food

080I lived on a farm in Iraq and grew the food we ate but now my family I live in a modest apartment on one of the main streets in Southern California called Beach Boulevard will take you to Disneyland Knott's Berry Farm Pacific Coast Highway and many other attractions however in order to get to these attractions you may need to pass by to many hotels motels and Corners in which illegal activities are publicly displayed such as prostitution and drug sales in addition to these many vices the one Vice that often gets overlooked is ignoring the healthy food crisis in poor neighborhoods like my own in the words of Ron friendly the gorilla Gardener from South Central like he says food deserts are where the drive-throughs are killing more than the drive-bys this is because at least

081neighborhoods there's an abundance of fast food restaurants convenience stores and gas stations rather than the abundance for grocery stores and farmers markets in fact I live next to a Taco Bell what I say next to I mean literally right next to we actually share a wall and the closest grocery store to my house is a Food For Less almost two miles away so if my family and I get hungry it's much more convenient for us to walk 200 feet to the Taco Bell rather than trick the two miles to the nearest grocery store we know consumption of unhealthy foods can lead to health issues such as obesity diabetes and heart failure because of the because of the high sugar salt and saturated fat and processed ingredients in these Foods some may be quick to blame

082families for allowing this diet but are never quick enough to help fix it fast food places have attempted to provide healthier options however have you guys ever ordered a salad from McDonald's Burger King or even college junior well that's kind of a trick question because they actually don't offer salads on their menus however a healthier option such as Subway actually does I'm sorry instead of paying oh the other day I walked into Subway and I wanted to get something a bit better than my normal 16 sub I wanted to get a salad instead of paying the 5.29 for a section sub a salad cost 7.78 an additional two dollars and 49 cents for substituting the bread for fresh veggies that's an almost 50 increase in price to get a healthier option that is society's way

083of telling me that I have to spend an extra two dollars and 49 cents so that I have a lower chance of die from a heart attack becoming obese and suffering from high cholesterol what should I do when my family can't afford a 50 markup in the price the only way this will change is if we all collectively call for a change that is why in the Anaheim Union High School District we focus on student engagement and student voice as a student ambassador of Magnolia High School I get to represent the students the student embody their concerns their needs and their assets it was because of student voice that are that our district took a site took a took an empty lot in the back of our science buildings and created an urban Garden called

084The Magnolia agriscience Community Center or known as the Mac if you guys didn't know that the Mac is more than just just a two Acre Farm it is actually a movement the vision of the Mac is to nourish our students and community members but also create job training skills and experiences to educate students and the community on sustainable food practices and ecological issues we want to hide from a food desert to a food Healthcare and Civics Oasis I'd like to end with giving you all a food for a thought imagine if fast food restaurants had burgers or had salads a lot cheaper than burgers imagine being able to solve food deserts imagine being able to see vending machines stocked with with snacks high in high in fiber and nutrients imagine being able to solve climate

085change and health care now instead of imagining I invite you all to be a part of the change bring awareness about food deserts invest in student voice and vote for people and politics that will support students and families like my own together we will make big changes thank you [Applause] [Laughter] [Music] thank you to the city of Anaheim for helping invest in our students and for continuing to invest funds for auhsd students to continue to solve the world's most pressing issues what Marco didn't share earlier is that the parameters of the grant require that students work or the employees 16 through 30 work 20 hours a week so that's difficult for our current students to continue that work during the school year but just too good of an opportunity for auhsd to pass up and

086so together working with the city of Anaheim we wanted to expand the work that our 10 student auhsd students started over the summer and the city of Anaheim has agreed to hire three of our recently graduated students to continue the work of expanding the Mac through our community schools and I'd like to introduce the three right now with Sebastian Mata I I up is easy and Penny cortazar all three of them all three of them are from the class of 2022 and are currently working for auhsd while being employed by the city of Anaheim and going to college and with their help they've been able to help us with the next iteration of how our students are solving the food insecurity issue in Anaheim and that is with this this new collaboration between biotechnology the

087mac and iLab uh right now we have 12 students today uh literally right now at the iLab six from Anaheim and six from Western working on the essential question of how can biotechnology be used to solve food insecurity that is why Mr Noah is not here with us tonight he is with the iLab working with those 12 students under an aim opportunity I think Dr Pham made a quick appearance here but he I think it went back to the iLab to continue working with those 12 students where you will see the next iteration of how our students are going to be solving food insecurity in Anaheim and I didn't know but if you were part of this Summer's internship if I can ask for you to stand to be recognized because you were really the

088ones who started it all so some of our students from this summer [Applause] um so I just want to remind you 16 to 30 year olds so we had four 10th graders as part of that group who started it all and Mr Lucero just politely reminded me that we are looking forward to next summer where we are already talking about how many programs that we're going to be able to put together so that many more auhsd students for their summer job will be continuing to solve food insecurity climate change and how to provide economic relief in Anaheim foreign and thank you to the Board of Trustees and executive cabinet for trusting a division and putting this together and providing an excellent opportunity for our students [Applause] thank you that is amazing and I am so

089so proud to say that we're doing this work at auhsd I mean just imagine how can biotechnology be used to solve food insecurity I couldn't have even dreamed of doing that when I was in college so you guys are getting some really awesome experience doing this uh congratulations to everyone and congratulations to our district leadership for thinking through this and putting auhsd on the map so thank you [Applause] all right so and I have to say something yeah I I visited the farm several times and it is amazing and I'd love to see the kids out there working and they are so proud and they um you know they guide you through it and they talk about it and it's just phenomenal and and I just I am just so thrilled with the fact that

090the land that was just a pond during the winter time that would gather water is now this beautiful green you know section of farm and kids are learning and they they just you know and I because I attended one of the the meals that they did with just the farm produce and the kids were all serving it and preparing it and it was just great I mean the amount of stuff that they are learning is phenomenal and it's just great I mean what an opportunity we have given these these students and and I think it's just wonderful and I and I want to tell everyone that's worked there I hope you enjoyed it tremendously and learned a lot and I know that Sabina does a lot and you know the the ones that we've hired

091it's just great and I continue to go and see everything and I just love the very section so all right thank you I just wanted to say Sabina thank you for dreaming big I mean look at look at this now you know this was your your thoughts and put into action you must just be bursting at the seams and students thank you so much for your hard work during the summer it must just be you know you saw that first slide empty and then the six months dude created all of that in six months that's amazing and um Mr Lucero thank you for making the call we know how special our kids are but thank you for making the call to give them the opportunity and thank you I know you're going to take this

092and and and let the world know just how wonderful they are because we know they're special but thank you for highlighting them and thinking of us we appreciate it [Applause] Learning Journey for all of you and I think of when I moved here this was really more rural and then world became different and just to see a part of rural come back to what we used to be in this community is just to Joy and thank you you'll never forget your experiences you'll you'll take all of this with you for the rest of your lives thank you for what you do all of you all right well congratulations to all of the students who participated I know you guys have uh had some really valuable experience and I know you're going to move forward knowing

093that you had this experience and utilized for others in the future so thank you [Applause] Paulina can we take is she working on it okay okay all right so we'll we'll move forward with our public comments uh I have three public comments in Mr Rana I'm going to ask you to do the comment when we take the agenda item per se okay all right so we'll go ahead and start out with Linda Martinez thank you good evening um I want to thank everyone in here for all that you do for our students um and I my name is Linda Martinez and I'm a parent of this District um I have three graduates of this District a current student at this district and two that are coming on board on to this district and I am

094a proud product of auhsd so um with that being said I want to publicly thank council member abelino Valencia and Steve vessel as many of you know you probably watched um you know the city council meeting I went and I advocated for our Sycamore band and they were working diligently you know to help our students with twelve thousand dollars which was the gate the to pay for the gate to enter the the the park to perform in February and Mr abelino Valencia I really want to thank you abelino for all that you've done for our students he donated a thousand dollars out of his kind heart and I appreciate that from you know just people that stand up to be in leadership um that's one thing the second thing that I want to talk to

095you about is that we need more academic counselors and social workers in our schools there's a high need as you know with mental health and number three is one of the main concerns why I'm here which is I believe you guys are going to be speaking about it which is item 10.9 and 10 10. um and it's regarding um Kennedy High School what happened to those four girls and Al I'm very disappointed very disappointed that during that time you know the district was supposed to protect these children and unfortunately it was not done correctly the way how us the community wanted it to happen Okay the safety of our students is so important it's the number one thing that we need to focus on and that has costed Anaheim Union High School District 7.9 million

096dollars which is money that comes out of here that could have been used somewhere else if we would have protected our children and that's concerning to me um another thing that I'm here for is um you know that I am requesting that Anaheim High School is becomes a closed campus just because of last time when I came I told you guys that there were kids that were getting high you know um consuming marijuana and I watch them you know as they comment as they go I've talked to administrators about this the last time I was there at the principal's cafecito and I spoke to Mr Hernandez he popped in and he said well I will take it to upper management well upper management is you guys so you know when I was there it was

097a closed campus we needed to be a closed campus you know just for the safety of our students um because it's just unbelievable that things that we have to see them go through also air conditioning we need air conditioning in the gym area I talked to um you know people that work at Anaheim high school and at Sycamore Junior High bathrooms I was there at an event yesterday for the band my daughter's part of the band and the bathrooms are horrible they look just the same way as when I was a kid and I have pictures I will be sending them to you guys submitting them to you guys it's just the pro deplorable with the amount of Grants and and money that comes through here you know it's just really really sad number six

098is acknowledging our students at our board meetings that's very important the last time that I was here my daughter was here thank you Miss Smith for taking the time to speak to Kayla and um I really appreciate that but when a student comes even when kids from the elementary Camp please acknowledge them they don't need to be here but you know we bring them as parents and it's very important that you know we have that culture that we create that change and you know for parents that are not satisfied with the communication here at Anaheim Union High School District it starts at the top you know every time that we have to send an email you know to superintendent matsuda I have to go through so many people in order for me to get my

099message across to somebody you know even to email you guys I have to go through a portal thank goodness that I know the email and I haven't written to you guys you know recently but it's so so important that the doors are open that we really open they're open we're open to parents community and that there's not not that there is an incongruency right now in the leadership that we currently have and one last thing is 11.16 okay please do not keep on giving raises to the elite team you know this is not just the Jose Moreno team that keeps on getting racist let's be fair and equal to all of our teachers we've lost a lot of teachers a lot of it all right thank you Miss Martinez it's very important that we make

100sure that everybody gets a fair share thank you very much all right our next speaker is Maza good evening good to be back and um I said good afternoon when I started this my name is Masa that's one of my Clans the dear Clan and obsidian heart of the mountain Clan and honoring the Tango the gabrielanos and the hatchimal that are the both tribes that are not um yet federally recognized maybe one day we'll have a judge that will you recognize those two tribes that are state recognized um I'm an alumni of Anaheim high school and I'm just very happy that when you guys take action on voting on the action item 10.8 uh with Jackie Nunes that I know personally myself I'm really happy that you guys are taking the time to teach the

101students now and creating the uh I know I'm aware that there's an indigenous committee now there at the school and I'm just very very from the bottom of my heart it really means a lot to me I went to Native American school and I didn't know I had Native American blood you know I was raised as a Chicano Mexico Americano again you are native from Oaxaca and so but I always spoke three languages Spanish English and now what a lot of us speak now what like when you say chili Chipotle cholo choloa Tapatio means but anyway so there's a lot of words that we speak that are now what and it's connected to the yuto Aztec nagwat linguistic family which includes the hachiman in the tangwa Shoshone Hopi but I'm very very happy thank you

102and when this item comes to vote I support that um pray to yokoyani which means Creator as well you will learn that from Jackie Nunez when she gives those presentations with the students I've seen her work it's beautiful worship and they get to work with the students working with the traditional instruments I myself I actually teach sometimes at flourishing college at the kinder kaminata thanks to Jerry Padilla that's uh Chicano studies Native American history I took that class at Fullerton College and um and it expanded my mind and connected more to who I was in that that creates a healing it creates an identity and with time I know eventually they'll name the school the Collins will will change with time you know and I know there's a lot of alumni that are still uh

103Pro colonists but it's okay it's we have to be patient and we have to decolonize and teach Native American history it's very it's very important I know it helped me it helped a lot of people and in memory of Raul that was alumni football player Anaheim high school and in memory of him and many other people and I last thing is I recommend all of you to watch the movie wakanda my young brother took me to watch the movie and it was kind of confused at first because they were like making the Panther and the Jaguar the kukulkan the native Mayans fighting each other again I'm like why is it always like that from a colonial colonist perspective View and but actually it was beautiful it was um educational it shows when the Spanish or

104the the English colonists pilgrims conquistadors when they came they brought diseases they brought rape child molestation and drugs is an alcohol so many things that they did in their the way of living if you go to San Juan Capistrano they have traditional Huts I think they're called quiche or Keats and it's traditional palm trees dried palm trees and that's it's a beautiful place and hopefully with time I know we're talking to the president Brian with the OC Vibe right now we had a meeting with him and creating hopefully some type of land acknowledgment in that area in Anaheim who to organized the ancient river the name of that a river before the colonists arrived from Europe over here but thank you so much uh I hope I didn't disrespect anyone to come here we come

105here in a peaceful way in al-jabbar I wish I could have voted for you but I didn't know I was in that in your District you know but I know you stood up for us and for native people and people of color like me and you darker skin I know it's hard for some of us but we got to keep our heads up and thank you so much thank you thank you all right so now we go on to our items of business uh go to Educational Services 10.1 School sponsored student organizations I'll entertain a motion so I moved second have a motion and a second any questions just want to make a comment about just the variety of um and not just the variety but just the um the purpose of of some of

106these um these clubs I'm just so proud of our students they're so Innovative and creative but especially you know the the club coming from Katella um you know what a beautiful what a beautiful thing you were not alone you know and their purpose of just inclusivity and bringing people together I'm just so proud of our kids I just want to acknowledge that and to the teachers who are are going to be you know helping them in those clubs I applaud all of all of you so thanks I want to ditto that because I you know some of these are really super groups in other words the ideas these kids come up with and thank you to the teachers that will sponsor them and allow them to meet and I think it's great our kids are

107really being thoughtful and insightful and some of their ideas and one of the ones that I really like too is the mindful money being really a basic thing that you know some kid thought about and it's very important so a good selection of clubs so really it's good okay so we have a motion in a second all in favor aye aye any opposed motion carries unanimously 10.2 resolution number 2022-23-e-08 day of the special educator hello second I have a motion and a second any comments C9 they recognize believe me I admire Any teacher who works with the special needs you have to have a tremendous amount of patience and understanding and I think it's great very good of course they say that about Junior High teachers too gotta have a little bit of nuts to

109think we could take the public comments first and then yeah go ahead yeah we'll take them in either before or after Mr President distinguished members of the board and ladies and gentlemen um I represent an organization that originates from Bangladesh is named after the father of the nation of Bangladesh and it has 10 uh State chapters and with me I have the California state chapter president Mr nazrul and uh vice president Mr Abu Rayhan so with what we proposed is to make 21st February as International mother language day and it originates its history days back to Bangladesh in 1952 when the students protesters were killed who were trying to uphold the Dignity of the mother language and what we have found out uh here and even in USA only 20 years ago there were a

110thousand one thousand native languages we have only 194 left and as you know that we are born with only two things our skin color and the language mother languages and we are promoting uh that schools in USA especially in the early childhood time that mother languages should be the medium of instruction and the diversity of languages should be appreciated because we are now trying to just make a tolerant Society we're here to make a kind compassionate and a respectful society and that is that is our strength in USA so with that I will really appreciate if you pass the resolution and we already have had uh LAUSD uh you know observing this 21st February as a calendar day in their calendar and in City of Paris I think Paris School District they already have done

111that and we are trying to spread these words around the USA and we hope uh you'll be helping us on that thank you very much [Applause] thank you sir and I'll entertain a motion it's a move I have a motion and a second and this will be a roll call vote uh Miss Percy aye Ms Randall Trejo I am absolutely in support of this I am strong and I vote I motion carry unanimously and we do have a resolution in front so I'll go ahead and take a picture with Mr honor and if you want to bring the rest of your crap well for I also want to take this opportunity to thank Dr Renee Bryan for actually doing the research in uh coming up with the resolution as well so thank you very much

11410.7 revised board policy 8803.04 administering medication monitoring health condition first and final reading information item so is this an action item it's an information it is an action item first and final reading so so probably it's mispreneur I thought we were supposed to do that okay I have a motion in a second and and Kathy I would like to say this is no surprise and um it I remember at a former board meeting we decided we weren't going to provide the schools with the medication to reverse this and now here we are and reality has slapped Us in the face and so I'm grateful for this yeah I I want to thank Dr Adela Cruz for working with uh um Healthcare agency as well I had actually after you brought it up Kathy I after

115a few months I had actually brought that back up again with Dr Cruz primarily because the state had made available for entices different entities including school districts if they wanted to participate in it I think the the challenge that we were facing at that point was to see if uh if it was a well not only storage location but also in terms of liability but the state had actually looked at it and said that as long as we are in a position to assist uh we're okay so as a result a lot of entities around the state are now they're actually giving away free of free of charge and many organizations are taking and distributing it as well so thank you I'm grateful now I have a question because we are going to try train

116are who all are we training the administrators and the nurses and the health techs are is that basically who yes yes and yes okay yeah as I was hoping it was wrong and you mentioned Dr Cruz but Veronica Medina and also Leanna uh Williams were also a big part of this process as well okay all right all in favor aye any opposed motion carries unanimously 10.8 educational Consulting agreement Jack Nunez uh Journey To The Past second I have a motion in a second any comments yes please invite me I want to go yeah actually um yeah I got an invitation to go to this as well I wanted to thank our our team at Anaheim they're doing done some great work our teacher um this remind me I'm sorry our uh are we talking about

117Michelle yes um I just wanted to thank her because during the summer I know we had a lot going on with the whole I went but I had an opportunity to have a conversation with her and um kind of smooth things over in terms of what happened and we had a great conversation in terms of how to bring about organizations to uh work with our students and she had actually put together some great Partnerships and matter of fact there was two folks who came to our board meeting and who wanted to be a part of it um who a little bit disheartened but ended up having meetings with them as well and it was a great collaboration it goes to show auhsd's openness to work with and now we are actually seeing it coming to

118fruition so I wanted to thank her publicly for being open and helpful in this she she's also led the committee with developing the lessons around you know our indigenous folks that were here in Anaheim and that's being taught through the social science classes as well um starting this next semester so yeah so just just that that's also and it's the beginning yep thank you just goes to show the real work that's being done and we keep our promises right all right all righty all right so we pointed we're on the desk will this be done at the cook Auditorium let's presenting not at the club no no my understanding it's going to be at the independent uh learning ilc it's going to be at the ilc um Independent Learning Center oh okay thank you all

119right all in favor aye any opposed motion carries unanimously Human Resources 10.9 revised board policy 8708 sexual harassment student uh second reading information and action item so move second I have a motion in a second any questions or comments seen none all in favor aye any opposed motion carries unanimously 10.10 revised board policy 6106 6106-r sexual harassment employees and applicants second reading information slash action item so move second I have a motion a second any uh comments seeing none all in favor aye any opposed motion carries unanimously 10.11 memorandum of understanding with Asta Health and Welfare program changes for 2023 action item um if you'd like you may want to take a 10 11 through 10 15 together oh okay and 11 12. all right so 10.11 10.12 10.13 10.14 and 10.15 taken as one

121uh bringing all of the stakeholders together especially the folks that are going to be maintaining um you know the fields and having them come to the table to actually help in the decision process so I just wanted to thank you for that perfect and then Patty's here if there's any questions we also have um Patrick Casa from AstroTurf he's also here um to answer any questions um that you may have so we're very very excited that uh we'll be installing hopefully very quickly on the destruction of Patty um the three fields at our side so we're super excited and they're able to lock in the prices for us as well for right now even for the inflation great yes we've been working with uh with them since um I think when we got the um

122go ahead from the board and we started talking to them immediately and they were able to lock in the rate at that time which is almost like four or five months ago or something like that so very thankful to them as well thank you Patrick for being here well moving right along next year we'll have two fields of turf or artificial terms well I know but I mean after you know after a whole year okay and then one of our other two our teams that are going up to CIF finals and playing on Turf somewhere else can go practice at one of our own exactly yeah that would be very nice right now we have three cities field yes Patrick is actually a Kennedy High School grad so he didn't see that come on up

123yes Kyle Kennedy High School um alumni so all right love to see our alumni come forward yeah hi uh I just talk I don't need this everyone can hear me uh yeah so uh Pat Casa with astro turf uh came through the uh District went to Walker graduated from Kennedy in 2003. uh baseball Arizona State UC Riverside wow the Minor League Baseball experience as well so fantastic so very honored to be here I'm excited for this as I think everyone else is I mean you know the reality is the fields right now are the signals I played up yeah it's very cool for the community I I'm an advocate for these things obviously I think it's the largest classroom on campus touches the most students um the district has gone through a long process and

124entertained a lot of ideas fields are going to have shock pads underneath them they're very safe it's it's it's an investment for the future the shock pads have 25-year warranties oh wow I don't know how you quantify the price today for a field that will pass safety measurements standards even higher than the NFL has currently for students that aren't born yet that will be playing on these fields in five years that's great very very cool thing going forward future focused on these very excited to be a part okay is that guaranteed in writing of course thank you so much thank you that's exciting just a moment and Nancy in closed session we were discussing uh AstroTurf and I had made the comment that this has been a real learning curve for me it's something I've

125never given any thought to and I Know It exists so I didn't you say it the life was uh the shock pad's different than the the shock pads are different than the actual Turf on the top the turf on the top so about every seven to ten years correct that ten yeah so it depends how much use you you have on that so that top portion you have to replace it about seven to ten years so when you make that comment in a public forum like this that it's going to have this journey in its life and I hear something else because I am in the position of explaining it to people that come to me in the in the community but I did ask Nancy or I made a statement we have a board

126member watching online oh sure yeah so to clarify when you're when you're building up the sub base with the the stone and the drainage and everything then there's a shock pad layer and then there's the Synthetic Turf with with the infill and everything so the shock pad layer that is basically the layer between the compacted Earth and the turf that adds that safety value that shock pad has a 25 year warranty the turf that sits on top has a 10-year warranty so when after 10 years you take the turf off and then it gets recycled and you put new on you do not have to touch the pad or this or the base underneath it once that base is built it's good forever so yeah those are things that I can put in writing or

127say I've got no problem because we've they've been doing them that way building the bases that way for a long time shock pads really only came into the picture in the last seven or eight years as part of a big movement in concussions and player safety uh prior to shock pads the only layer between an athlete professional or or student athlete was the turf and then the compacted uh Class 2 permeable base underneath it so it was very hard so the just for peace of mind uh the testing that they use to test a field safety as far as uh impact is a gmax test the ASTM for a gmax today is says not to exceed the uh 200 G's which is essentially concrete a synthetic turf field at install without a pad will be

128around 110 G's going up towards 165 175 towards the end of its warranty when you put a shock pad under a field in the warranty of that pad the G the gmax performance of that field will never exceed 100 to 110. for the 25 years so you're essentially cutting the ASTM in half for safety which is a big benefit to everyone that's going to be playing on it concussions will be reduced including uh soft tissue injuries because what the shock pad does is it allows that energy that you put into the field when you plant to be returned to get back out so you're also reducing ankle and knee stuff as well we have a earthquake fault here so I'm assuming that if we did have a big earthquake like we did a number of

129years ago it would not affect your product no the turf and the pad would not be affected by it if it created any sort of settlement in or any any sort of destabilization in the base underneath it then we have a you know plan in place it's happened before where let's say you know a drain a drain pipe or water pipe or something broke under the field and it caused some washout for the base then we go in we'll cut the turf back the general that built the base will come in make the repair and then we put the turf back the way it was so it's it's a very quick easy process to be able to bring it back thank you I did make the comment to Nancy I hope this is not manufactured

130in China no and she's Dalton Georgia Georgia yes Georgia yes ma'am so astro turf we invented the industry back in 1965. so where all of it was made back then it's still made now it's just the technology has advanced a long way from the very first field we did in the Astrodome so none of your product comes from China no Zip Zip zero good but uh yeah so just to add on that uh in Dalton Georgia we we own every step of the manufacturing process so outside of that we don't even third party any component there's a lot that goes into it the tufting the fiber the backing the coding uh the graphics all of that is done in our 450 000 square foot facility next to the corporate office so chain of custody uh

131quality control it's all there Under One Roof so your installers obviously go to a location where you have a job to install and so they are you get them there by airplane or uh no so we have uh about five local Crews that live in Southern California uh we throughout the year we'll do anywhere from 30 to 50 of these field installs uh they're through our partner AFE Sports so they're a local general contractor in the Long Beach area so we have local boots on the ground which is why I say if there are issues then you can have a rapid response but we've yet to have that so I see thank you you're welcome very helpful all right thank you I think this question will go to uh patty patty just for Anaheim field

132purposes um I see that we're going to be starting construction in 2023 September that was January patty patty patty if you could come to the mic yeah because Brian is watching the meeting as well although he's sick he's being a diligent board member watching the meeting from home so everybody hello uh Mr O'Neill okay so the question was Anaheim right the installation so we are looking at starting construction in January and uh so there's a lot of site prep that needs to happen grading and uh so that's going to take a couple of months so we're looking at um ordering starting production with the AstroTurf field sometime we'll probably contact uh AstroTurf sometime in February where and it starts production they start production and we're looking at April or May of 2023 to start installation

133so it's going to take maybe is it oh you know what my bad I was looking at the Cypress High School one okay yeah Cyprus is this is a new field that we've added to the uh to the to the list of um uh turf fields that we want to do so that's newer on our uh design um on on basically our design um list of projects and um and Anaheim and Western of course we started some time ago so they're more advanced and they're out of DSA already perfect so with Cyprus we're just starting design we started early in November and we still have to go through the DSA process so that's why this one's a little bit more it's it's a little bit more delayed because we started later okay that's Cyprus Perfect

134all right thank you um all in well actually we have a motionless second all in favor aye any opposed motion carries unanimously thank you uh Patty and the team thank you appreciate it but I pulled that item all right 11.8 11.8 uh so moved I have a motion and a second okay um Eric uh would you mind giving a quick um explanation uh what my question really is is you're saying most days the district has the highest data use in the county and so we need to increase is this gonna is this gonna just meet the need or is this going to really how far will this help us we we have been keeping an eye on for a number of years can you pull the mic closer to you absolutely so the the uh

135the County Office of Education gives us a dashboard with all of the districts um internet so we have the benefit of not only reviewing how our use um is uh it has been impacted over the months and years but also all of the other school districts so like for today as an example we peaked out at about 73 percent utilization so we we've we've actually been planning this out for about a year there's actually five components to to make this upgrade from 10 to 20 and the item before you tonight is is uh one of those so this items for our content filter to upgrade the capacity from 10 gigabits to 20. um we had previous items we had an e-rate item in February to be able to facilitate facilitate our firewall being upgraded to

13620 and we've already have a contract in place with Spectrum to go up to 40. so we're in year I believe three of five of that contract so we look we forecast it out needing 10 potentially growing to 40 and we looking at the traffic we really felt last year now is a time we really need to start moving so this is um kind of the the the the last item in terms of uh of having approval the other items we have to also coordinate with the County Office of Education where they increase the the bandwidth on their side we've already had those discussions we have to have a conversation with Spectrum to turn up from 10 to 20 we've already had those conversations and then the other items are already in the process of

137being upgraded okay thank you for the explanation I appreciate it thank you I have a question um for the content keeper is that also the same thing that keeps us from accessing our like our personal accounts on the school computers the content filter it's probably the firewall that would be blocking any personal accounts potentially the content filter basically categorizes the internet and um and then we either block or allow um content by by user type so teachers and employees have a little bit more access like social media as an example to what students have access to so the best content filters only have a fraction of the internet categorized and then there's an uncategorized component as well that we open up and we have to create a series of rules of to open and close

138things for those uncategorized items um the reason I had the question is because in my computer science class we were told to sign in with using our personal emails since the school email blocks some certain senders and then that was the educational website we use so there's like a class of students that before my period that just can't access the educational material and me personally I was working off a Chromebook instead of using any of the devices available to me at the school so is there any way to like incorporate that website into or incorporate personal accounts for now until we can access our educational materials during class foreign that particular item is with G Suite so with Google we have something set up called a Walled Garden so we have kind of a tight

139loose approach to uh to student email to prevent um you know inappropriate uh like spam and other emails coming in to students and so teachers counselors administrators basically just requests that that we open up domains or specific email accounts so we do that for instance when we buy a new software product if there's a support email or a reply email we add those to that white list we've had we have over 1600 domains and email addresses that we've added through teacher and other staff member requests so it may just be a matter of we need to know who's trying to reach the teachers and and then we can add that email either domain or email address to uh to the white list okay thank you you're welcome thank you that's a great question all right

140um I have a motion and a second all in favor aye aye any opposed motion carries unanimously 11.11 I think I made the error it was 11.7 17. oh 11.17 okay so moved second all right I have a motion in a second so uh my question on this um will um data be collected um in these five years um this late at night when I wrote this question sorry um so we have this partnership right with the span of the five years um with all of these schools and they're receiving the the literacy coaching professional learning is system support so what I was just thinking um is if they're going to start with maybe a baseline data because they're targeting the students achievement and so I was just wondering if this group was going to

141collect data to see or if we are going to collect data to see if this is even yeah so so Mike Switzer want to give him a big shout out he's overseen our Cali reads Grant and he's been working the sites and they do click data there's a baseline the students take an assessment I cannot remember what this assessment is like a close it's um it's like a five minute assess real quick and then it gives the teachers instant information in terms of where they're at with literacy and if there are challenges or issues with their literacy it actually can point to through the assessment where those might be whether it's fluency or you know maybe it's their their phonemic awareness so there's things they can do to Target interventions and then we actually had

142a meeting um I don't know if it was a week ago with all the calorie teachers where they're now looking at the the rewards program which also collects data and provides um various targeted strategies to help students with their literacy so they are tracking the data not only what they do with the Baseline assessment but then through the through that process and we have a number of teacher leads at each site who have been trained and I know our goal is to be able to take what we've learned from from these teachers who participated in the grant be able to expand it to teachers who weren't a part of the grant because we are already seeing um positive impact with literacy okay so yeah I don't know if Diane if I capture that there's anything

143else I should be missing okay but Mike switcher should get a lot of credit he's been doing a fantastic job leading and working with all of our teachers who are part of this and the coaches that are part of the Kelly reads Grant so this is a teacher it's going to be a coachable yes yeah training model I love it all right thank you so much all righty oh um I have a motion in a second all in favor aye aye Indian post motion carries unanimously we go to uh 12. superintendent and staff report uh so first of all Happy Thanksgiving that's one report and then secondly I know our superintendent was unable to be here tonight but on his behalf and I think on behalf of our cabin I just want to extend a

144heartfelt appreciation gratitude towards ul and your leadership um you know I know you are a tireless Advocate on behalf of our students and our families and our communities uh but but what makes you so unique is despite that incredible advocacy you I've always I think made Staff feel supported and like you've had their back while advocating for the needs of the community and celebrating the assets their Community Rings which is a which is a unique skill not all folks can do that so we're going to miss you I know you're not going to be on the dice but I'm quite confident we'll be in touch over the weeks when things come up or or you have you're going to continue to provide us services and bring different agencies and supports to our district I'm confident

145so we appreciate you and we'll definitely miss you serving in this role well I also want to Echo the same thing as Dr freed um and you can always call me still um you have my number and so anytime we can use that word begins as well it's okay you can always call me um but thank you so much for all your support you've been just um super amazing to work with and you always find a way to support everyone and you can see it from all sides and thank you for basically impacting me as well personally and that just that you always bring a different light in everything and thank you for getting me to many places where I could not have been before so I really appreciate you and um please be back

146here at any time thank you thank you and and I share the the same sentiments um it's been a really good year having you be the president and I appreciate everything you've done in the last year um and we are going to miss you but I know we'll see you in about three short weeks so that's good news for all of us and Happy Thanksgiving to everybody else thank you yeah where do I start um I I think you know I I speak I know can you can you start that please Carl um I think I I know I speak on behalf of our Anaheim Community Anaheim Sycamore Community our staff at both Anaheim high school and Sycamore that you represent all of our neighbors around around those two schools including my family that lives

147in the community and just on behalf of everyone just your your leadership your kindness your compassion and your passion to serve has has meant everything to us and I I know that a lot of the success that we've seen not only at our district in our district at all of our sites because of the you know the support of the board but in particular at Anaheim High School is is because of your your leadership and support so a lot of gratitude and and uh definitely won't miss you but I know we'll be we'll continue to be in touch all right and Happy Thanksgiving to everyone hi first yes yes okay um for this month um I did make the Mac visit when the U.S department of Agriculture came along with the California Department of Education

148and or um the Food Services got to put their best foot forward and we really impressed them it was a beautiful display um you you did a great job everything was beautiful we I mean they were impressed they were totally impressed with what we are doing at Magnolia and what the uh you know cafeterias are producing for the kids and what you know and how we're using the food it was really really uh a good showing um I think we made a quite an impression on the people from Washington so uh and I also attended the Lexington Junior High School's Fun Run and watched all these kids you know take off to raise money and run through the streets of Cyprus they were having a ball it was some of them were so funny they

149were dressed up in costumes and you know they were just all hyped up they've been doing that for a long time they have for a very long time when I was still teaching there we took it over rather than have the magazine sale that you know that that the company would come in and PTA would get this company to do magazine sales and whatever they decided one of our teachers there came up with the idea of us as a faculty handling it and not having to pay somebody else to do it and we made it first of all into a a fun run it was you know you know first it was the inco uh in coordination with the um physical fitness and so that was you know everybody was out there doing the physical

150fitness test and whatever and the PTA came out and then um at the end of the day there would be this thing where there was a pipe throw pie in the face of the teachers and what have you the kids loved it and and but then the monies that they raised we you know they had different levels and they would get prizes and so we spent the money on prizes to give to the kids who brought in the money and at one time the school brought in 125 000 and then we would take them to Disneyland you know and that was when we could do it we'd take a day and take him to Disneyland and then things changed and we couldn't do it and then we went to Knotts this year the reward for

151bringing in 125 dollars if the kids bring in 125 they get to go to Dave and Buster's and they have a trip to Dave and Busters and that so but kids they did I don't know what the final total was this year but they did pretty well considering because things went down after that as far as the amount but then it's how much I think it was like seventy thousand seventy thousand so they were hoping to make a hundred but I I don't think they made it pretty significant yeah but at this time of the year with what's been going on I think that was really well I mean um with the increase in prices and then okay and then I made it to the Drone ribbon cupping cutting which was postponed but then debt

152started again and that was very well done it was really good um the scissors didn't work very well but um they did a very good job of explaining everything about the Drone program and the Fullerton College had brought their their drone truck out and that was really interesting and then we went into the the room where the drones are and these drones are not cheap they're big they're beautiful and they are expensive and there's a lot of money in those little drones and but that is the future I mean you know we're looking at maybe Amazon delivering with drones is the drones are doing a lot of uh photographing and like the right now if you've ever seen one of the Thomas Brothers map guy out on the road and they got this car at

153the thing on top making pictures well pretty soon it's going to be all drones doing this you know mapping out things so that was really interesting um and then I have one thing I would like to say too is um I saw this on Facebook and this was the Sycamore Fishing Club I you know one of our teachers is sponsoring that club and he took these kids and their parents fishing on a boat and for a lot of them it had been the very first time they'd ever been on a boat or fishing and it was just phenomenal and then they you know cleaned them but these kids were out around the lake and they also went around some Lake and fishing but it just goes to show what some of our teachers really put

154out extra effort and do some great things with these kids I mean there are kids here who had never touched a fishing pole and they learned and the parents went along and it was great and I just you know I I have to say kudos to that teacher for doing all that because that that is a superb thing for those kids to learn so and then Al nine years of working with you it's been fun okay um it's been you know I didn't believe it was nine years where did the time go well then part of it though you your daughter was little and now she's you know in junior high or is she even in high school now she's sixth grade so what is she sixth grade sixth grade well she was at Dale's

155thing I thought she was junior high already oh okay looks like she's a Jewish she's beautiful she's gorgeous yeah and really smart young lady um well anyway good luck I do know I'm gonna see you I'm sure you know so you're not leaving you're just changing position you'll be sitting out in the audience so but uh congratulations on good nine years of service you put a lot of energy and a lot of thought and uh sincerity and commitment so and I applaud you for that because you really dove into it and did a lot for the for your area so that's it I'm done I notice I can remember something else and then I'll remember it afterwards my short-term memory is pretty bad all right Miss Randall Trail okay so I did as well attend

156the uh the lower loera ball no crop auhsd uh ribbon cutting drone Tech pathway ribbon cutting and that was really um just amazing to see um the kids they couldn't wait to get back in that room you know they didn't care what we were saying they just wanted to get back into the room but they all um really are appreciative um spoke to a lot of the students and they're grateful that they have this pathway and they're there after school and you know they're going to be the future they're going to invent some new way of using these drones and it's just exciting to see and I'm so proud of a district that has the ability to offer that and excited to to see floor 13 College I guess it was the interim president Perez

157Perez yeah yeah I I hope she becomes the the president um she's the president already she got appointed not Monty Perez but um doctor I forgot her name but I know she's the president so she was there she was the so the interim that spoke no that's not the interim the interim was uh Monte Perez Dr Perez [Music] okay so I hope she she was very enthusiastic about you know the the the teacher and and I I really was enamored by her uh enthusiasm so I hope in some way um that she she projects that and and we continue to have the the success um with that pathway I attended my uh gazelpa meeting um last night Cynthia Olivia no I'm sorry Cynthia Olivio um Dave pirate doesn't ring a bell she's there she's a

158new president she's a new president okay okay I don't I don't remember her name that's terrible me I liked her she was great um the uh the Mac presentation was spectacular Orlando you're back there um fantastic putting that all together the food was awesome um and uh it was really cool to uh to find out that the kids had go through they go through all the food that's put out the produce that's put out the product that's put out by the um by the Mac garden and the kids love it they say the lines are so long and they were going to try to show the the folks from Washington um you know what the kids are eating but it was already it was already gone and done yeah but the kids love it somebody

159talked too long I know we all talk too much but uh but it was it was an amazing event um and so proud of you um to to be up in front to uh to give that that presentation and to um be able to to buy the product from from Magnolia from the farm and uh put it into the to the food that we service just it's mind-blowing all right I attended the band spectacular it was a really cold night um spent a lot of time with our ambassadors um they're so cool we really appreciate you um you guys did a spectacular job as well as all of the Bands I'm very proud that you got to have a little moment out there too to shine and represent uh and shout out to um I'm

160not quite sure who the maintenance crew uh was if it was the city of Anaheim or if it was our crew but I heard that they were out there because it had rained the day the night before and they weren't sure if the the event was going to take place but they said the crew was out first thing in the morning um drying the field and uh they put uh you know layers on in the track area so the kids drums and percussion wouldn't sink in and so uh thank you whoever did that for our kids so that um that night could take place it's always a a nice event uh for the kids to see um each other's shows they work so hard and then unless you're in you know the same um group

161uh it goes to 1A to 6A I think um and unless you're in that group you only you only get to see like one or two of our of of our our bands and and so I whoever invented the spectacular was just a genius so that all the directors could get together and steal each other's ideas and stuff but I know they do a great job and they collaborate and work together and um uh Steve Graves uh one of our um give a shout out to him he wrote the music that the junior high school band uh performed that night so how proud is he and I believe they're the other bands across the state are are buying it and playing it so and it was and it's called Spectacular so so um kudos to

162him I hopped on the Hope principal virtual chat with the parents I was driving and so I said I'll I'll hook up my phone and listen in and so I got to listen in to really uh wonderful questions from our parent from the parents at Hope and it was a good it was a good turnout uh of course the no crop meeting and it was really spectacular to hear those testimonials from um the Gilbert High School business educate business entrepreneurship uh clubs and those kids were so enthusiastic at the college and career fair if you walked by the the students that were all in pink and they were doing the lashes I think I mentioned them this time I bought some so they'll have to give me a tutorial on how to do it but

163they gave their testimonials at the no crop meeting and they're just a delight and there's they raised about 200 and I think 17 dollars and they donated that to Gilbert's Pantry so our kids are just amazing the teacher of the year um is always a wonderful event yeah and I always say I turn into a five-year-old I know Mickey's coming and Minnie's coming but I still get really excited and I know our deserving teachers um had a really good time there uh the um Halloween parade this year was really fun um my the person that was going to drive me got really sick that wasn't fun for her but I had to think really hard how I was going to find a car because the the convertibles are really hard to to come by when

164there's a parade and so um I decided to enter my my orange car and I got on top of the roof on top of the the Roof Inn my kiddos actually where I I I work in the area all recognize me and so it was really fun um I told him that yeah Mrs Trejo was being naughty got on top of my car but it was really fun to to see the community and and experience that and and the Katella band boy they had a day they were doing the the tournament all day so they had just been finish their their performance and before that they have to do some I I don't know exactly the term but they have to do they get judged in formation and but they really wanted to be part

165of the event and so they were they were right behind us playing and the the community absolutely loved it um Happy Thanksgiving and I have a lot of gratitude being um a servant alongside my colleague I think the go back to the first time that I met you um you were helpful then and you've always been that same helpful human being I've watched you um just makes such an impact um not only um in the community but your home you have wonderful children um an excellent excellent excellent wife um and you're just a really inspired an inspiration to a lot of us who watch you you have so much dignity and um I'm gonna miss you but I know that our paths will cross I know this isn't goodbye this is see you later I

166thank you so much for all the work for all the advocacy that you've brought to this Deus and in your job capacity just wherever you go you know the labor you know I don't think that anyone could have a negative word to say about you um if they do they don't know you um honestly you have a tremendous heart and you lead with that and I'm honored to know you and um and best wishes to you thank you Emery well I don't have a lot to report my husband joined me to at the ribbon cutting at Laura high school and our superintendent Mike matsuda gave a lot of credit to Gary Brown the principal because he apparently had pushed that and people came away knowledgeable about drones and of course I've seen them on television

167and I watch what's going on and uh in Ukraine and they used drones there and so putting all the things together that what drones are doing now and what they will be doing is just going to change the interdependence of different communities and the way our lives go and some of it's scary and some of it is well it's here and we just need to understand it I had a a teacher and then one of the students walked my husband and me through the process and explained it all the technology and it was very very beneficial and when we went outside there was a drown right up there taking pictures of us down in the courtyard so I was very appreciative of that and I don't like goodbyes I've told Elle for years that I

168love him and it's deep in my heart and it'll never change your family I love them and I'm just grateful thanksgiving's coming and we've had so much going on in our world in the last four years with covid and politics and mental illness and homelessness and sometimes it's hard to remember how really fortunate we are there's a country in Africa that they're starving I can't even remember which one it is now and um Thanksgiving is coming and we have a lot to be grateful for wonderful leadership people that have integrity and honesty when they say something to me I can believe it I don't feel like I have to question it and people in the community that come and and share your concerns and your desires and your love and people that work in ROP

169and all the wonderful things you're doing to change the world and I'm just grateful and I wish everyone a safe loving Thanksgiving and I don't use the word goodbye thank you Kathy and I understand that Mr O'Neill wants to make a yes I have the board report for Mr O'Neill so Mr O'Neill wanted me to say Al thank you Al for your devotion uh to your board position you have made a difference as a trustee and I salute you for your dedication to improving the education of our students I look forward to hearing from you in the future that's Brian thank you Brian if you're watching thank you I know you're watching so thank you um yeah I I uh attended the the event at Mac with the superintendent of public instruct instructions so that

171meeting but I wanted to thank each and every one of you especially my colleagues I know sometimes we've had disagreements but at the end of the day we always done the work to make sure that our students are front and center and we all have a passion so I'm I'm honored to have served with each and every one of you um I know I'll say more at the next board meeting uh but thank you we're going to limit you to five minutes I know what but I wanted to uh thank you and um and I appreciate all the work that everyone has done so I know Brian's not here but thank you Brian as well so all right well we have our future board meeting is uh December 13th at 6 pm and that will
