005former students who are currently attending or have graduated from four-year colleges and universities and who believe their former teacher had a significant positive and lasting impact on their lives both personally as well as academically honorees received a cash award which included a five thousand dollar grant to be distributed to the honorary school site so thank you very much to the carlson family foundation i would invite um dr beverly young to come up front and also julianne well let's come on down well first i'll get uh dr beverly young do you want to say a few words and then we'll have julianne say a few words and then we'll take a picture okay thank you very much um i just want to say you all should be very proud that you have julian real in your

006school district she's worked at anaheim high school for 18 years counting her student teaching year she was a student teacher with you and then went on to be a teacher she's the e-learning coordinator and the computer multimedia technology teacher set class computer science um julianne was selected along with four other high school teacher public school teachers in california after a really rigorous um identification process where former students in julianne's case several former students contacted us to tell us how julianne's teaching and her caring impacted their lives changed their lives the specific teacher or the specific student that nominated julianne that spoke at our banquet in november is now a fourth year science or excuse me math teacher out in lake elsinore but she told a wonderful story of how julian impacted her so we are

007really happy uh we gave julianna check for 15 000 but we're also giving her a check for five thousand dollars to be spent at anaheim high school but julianne gets to decide what it's been on so great you we are very proud of her joining the crosston family cadre of honorees you all should be very proud of her too as one of your teachers absolutely [Applause] um i just want to say thank you this this um this recognition from carlston family foundation made me really humble for you know uh for doing the work i do um thank you carlson family foundation for um valuing my work that i do in the classroom um another thing i do want to say is to thank the district for always valuing our students future and goals and trying

008to be innovative to support their future next is i do want to thank my my colleagues and the support staff and the amazing teachers that i work with from their support that's where you know we all worked as a community to help our students to be successful and it's not just me it's it's a whole community and lastly my students um they're amazing and oh my gosh they do listen and here we are you know trying to help them and guide them and thinking that they're not listening but they they are and so i hope um you know i i i'm just so happy to see them from when they're in high school and now they're all professionals and you know moving on and so it's very very rewarding so i want to thank everyone

009for supporting my career as a teacher and and our students thank you thank you very much so i'm going to invite the board and the superintendent and julian and dr young to come in and let's take a picture and after that i understand we also have a fourth district uh representative and also a former student who's going to be presenting a certificate from supervisor doug chafee's office so let's just take a picture and then i'll have our representative come back and julia's husband and daughter are here too as well as some of her colleagues and former students oh i forget them okay [Applause] all right we also have jessica guerrero who is the fourth district policy advisor for supervisor doug chafee and also a former student who happened to have nominated uh her former teacher

010so go ahead jessica good evening board of trustees superintendent district staff uh miss riel um and everyone watching my name is jessica girl i'm a policy advisor and field representative for the office of chairman zak tafe but most importantly i'm a former student of miss rio and i just wanted to share a little bit so the carlston family foundation is a non-profit organization who identifies california high school teachers who have had profound and life-changing academic influence on their students and honors these teachers with recognition miss rio is definitely one of those profound teachers that has made life-changing influences on her students and that is why i meet myself and four other students including salali jocelyn artru and melissa nominated her for this award i had the honor of having miss brielle as my freshman high

011school avid teacher and my senior avid high school teacher where she helped my classmates and i applied to college through the entire college application process from applying to college getting the acceptance and making that final choice of which school to attend she truly cares about seeing her students succeed and if she wasn't tired of us yet she continued to mentor us while we were her avid tutors and she was our boss and continued to really be that person that we could come to with advice through the undergrad process she was there for me through my graduate school process being a mentor role model and a friend she knows what it means to be a first generation college student and ensure that her students were not alone in that process of making college decisions and i'm

012very honored to have been a student of hers and thank the carlson family foundation for selecting her to be a recipient and part of my day job i get to recognize community leaders business owners but this might be my favorite certificate i've ever presented um so much real on behalf of my boss the chairman of the orange county board of supervisors there's a certificate of recognition [Applause] all right thank you very much all right well our second uh recognition is uh to honor our outgoing board president so on behalf of our board we would like to thank trustee piercy for her service as boarded uh trustee for anaheim union high school district and i believe we have the okay and i'll open it up for our board members to uh make any comments everybody's rushing

013we're we're breathless miss percy just want to thank you for your time in service this last year uh it has been a difficult time uh knowing full well what we have just gone through and uh we're not out of the woods yet but i thank you for your for your service and your leadership and guidance so thank you i just want to say i know how difficult it was to go through this uh as i was the predecessor and so thank you it's very it's been it's been challenging for all of us but i know being at the helm is is uh you know you get you get all of it and so thank you for your service thank you for being lighthearted and making us laugh through this uh you know last year and

014um and keeping us moving forward as you always have and thank you for your continued service with our our district many many years so thank you so much we appreciate you thank you kathy well i would like to ditto what mr o'neill and mrs randall trejo said that you have been a wonderful person to work with and it's been a joy under extremely difficult times and i would like for you to mandate that everybody can hug everybody so that we can get back to life as normal but thank you so much so uh go ahead and then i'll reserve my comments here go ahead yeah trustee piercy on behalf of the entire staff that the board led but under your leadership really having your involvement and your capital your relational capital with so many of

015the staff members and community members was so vital in helping us navigate through very difficult times and making difficult decisions for the board in the district but then in hindsight they were the right decisions and very challenging decisions but your leadership made a difference on all of us you know in terms of what the district stands for in the past and the president and going forward into the future thank you very much thank you mike so i'll go from there to say i know anna both you and i have now probably seen eye to eye on some of the issues but i can tell you one thing is that i've always come out of it appreciating your passion and your dedication for our students and our district so i want to tell you that i

016watched you leading this district as a president and i hope that i will be you know doing something similar or better at the end of the day i want to say that i think thank you on behalf of all of our students and our parents because last year was uh one of the most difficult years for any school board member on top of that you led the district so thank you for that appreciate it thank you come back out and take a picture oh sorry go ahead abdullah [Music] all right well i'm sure i haven't known uh you as closely as as the rest of the board has or as long but um i still remember the first time when you interviewed me for this position and i remember how kind you were and how

017comfortable you made me feeling in this uh definitely scary position and the first time i got to talk to you so thank you for being so welcoming and kind to me especially as someone coming so new and i really appreciate so much how much you've helped me during this process especially learning all these new terms and all these new things i have to do so thank you for being that support thank you present a certificate right i seen the gavel [Applause] all right so we now go into our reports and our student representative report abdullah you're next all right thank you mr al-jabbar um so i'm not gonna lie it's the start of the year so i don't have too much to report on uh but a little bit's been going on so at anaheim

018high school their link crew decorated some christmas ornaments with students from our special education classes uh to make students feel more included with the new year and all across the district as i'm sure you all know of there were lots of covid at home test kits passed out to students these were 15 minute tests and all students were able to receive them and if they weren't they can receive more in the future working with the cypress police students at cyprus are working to to do an active shooter drill sometime in the end of january or beginning of february uh to kind of prepare and in what school is this in oh sorry this is all schools they got to present uh to elementary schools and middle schoolers at kind of a showcase and all the

019ambassadors were there so we were really excited to see all those young kids um there's an international show at luwera and one coming up at western as well from january 24th to the 28th and at oxford academy they just had their whole homecoming spirit week we do things a little bit differently there because we don't have a football team so we use our basketball team sadly cypress high school and oxford academy's dances were just postponed due to kova 19. and um we have servathon which i just mentioned this monday and there's stuff going all across the district there's like battery recycling sandwiches being made for the homeless all across the district and at the end of last year before we went for a break i talked briefly about it but students created a little mental

020health initiative where they got to do different activities and it was all run by students that was really great um western key club along with key clubs across the district got to work on the rose flow at the rose at the rose float parade in pasadena that was on december 29th and lastly there were two more summits at kennedy and magnolia and they went really well despite kova 19 issues but we got to have some people at school and kind of do a district-wide summit so that was really great to see that's it thank you all right thank you for your comprehensive reporter appreciate it thank you i have a question abdullah is there a list of all the different activities at the different schools um that's been posted so people would know yeah they're

021i mean not really a list but the all the ambassadors give me what happens i just kind of narrow it down to the big key ones but i could definitely like send out a list to anyone are you talking about the serverathon oh sir we can probably ask their superintendent to give us a list of uh activities that are going on throughout the district so that way if board members want to attend they could right actually that was what i was wondering if that was already one made uh i think there is okay thank you hilda not just for western for everyone okay okay all right okay perfect well thank you thank you i appreciate that i know i'm gonna be at uh i believe sycamore so there are a couple of events going on

022there so all right perfect thank you so i'm glad to see the next item which is we we asked it at the last board meeting basically to have this item for student speakers and uh i am not seeing any student speakers that was presented to me i'm assuming in the background we don't have anybody who is a student speaker correct all right well thank you very much and thank you call for actually putting this on the agenda and making sure that we recognize that as student speakers all right 7.3 reports of association and i'm going to call first our asta president grant shuster good evening president jabar uh trustees cabinet and our community at home um i never could have imagined when we finished up last winter and the the wave of covert that we

023went through that we could be back in a position like we are now i've spent several days the last few weeks out on campuses covering classes myself dealing with the situation and it really has been two of the most difficult weeks just because of the logistics and trying to deal with this since the beginning of the pandemic incredibly we're seeing just adaptive teaching and learning going on on every campus all of our district employees led by teachers in the classrooms have stepped up above and beyond reasonable expectation to provide our students and community with anything they need during this continued crisis and they deserve our admiration and respect i want to focus tonight on what all of us as leaders can do to make sure it continues on a daily basis for the near term

024there is nothing more important to educators students and staff then they feel supported it's not about long-term vision or new programs this month it is about day-to-day operation of sites what's currently most important it's making sure that merv filters are the people see the merv filters being switched out on the roofs and feel confident in the air quality in their classrooms when the little red light goes on on the air purifier it's knowing that someone's going to show up to take out the secondary filter and make them feel comfortable in the classroom it's walking to your mailbox and finding a half a dozen k and 95 masks that make you feel just a little bit better when you're going into the classroom in a situation like this and it's seeing as i did when i

025was out teaching at catella and anaheim and dale seeing site and district administrators heads popping out of the doors next to you because they're out there covering classes as well making us all feel that we are in this together and supporting each other safety air quality ppe helping with class coverage these are a few examples of what we need to do as a district in the short term to weather this storm we hope that the pandemic wave is peaking this week but if not we also need to make sure plans are in place if a campus doesn't have enough staff to open for the day knowing that and understanding a plan is in place brings confidence to people and they understand that the struggle won't last forever and won't get any worse beyond the current

026situation i also want to praise again this month the asta and auhsd bargaining teams for getting through a quick and difficult pro and efficient process with a tentative agreement that recognized the value of teachers nurses speech language pathologists and all other district employees during this most difficult time our membership ratified the tentative agreement with a 94 approval rate we look forward this spring to getting through the current public health crisis and moving forward with the lcap process with community school development uh and community school development which are just two areas where both asta and the auhsd are becoming national models until we get there i just encourage everyone in leadership and all of our staff on campuses to stay safe and take care of each other until we can get to the other side of

027this that concludes my report thank you mr schuster all right we're going to invite um i know adrian prieto is probably not here i don't see him am i inviting jennifer hippolotano why napolitano came to mind sorry my bad name correctly it's okay so that i get a pass sharon correct her name please thank you i know it now i'm actually before i speak i'm going to let sharon speak to you because she is giving us a farewell i didn't know she was going to be here so i didn't want to sorry jennifer i'm i as you all know i'm going to be retiring january 31st after 31 years in this district and i don't want to cry and i want to say thank you to all of you that i've worked with through the

030to remember to say her name and even sometimes i still now slip up okay good evening my name is jennifer hippolito i am currently the acting president for the anaheim high csea chapter number 74. before i begin i would like to acknowledge my predecessors jackie brock and sharon yeager their many years of dedication continued support and efforts have ensured that our members meet the needs of the district i am also here to present the anaheim high csea chapter number 74 initial contract reopener proposal as we go into negotiations for the 2021-22 school year they have already been submitted the board has them um some of the articles include health and welfare working hours wages and items related to wages vacations and association rights that we'll be negotiating with the district finally as we are dealing

031with the adverse effects from the covid pandemic i would like to remind the board that many of our employees continue to remain vigilant in providing service to the students and parents of our community as many of our employees students and parents are being inundated with illness we thank our district for continuing with the most current and stringent safety protocols thank you jennifer hey polito there you go she's going to be a fantastic csa president she's she makes me very proud good good sharon we'll see you at your retirement party but i wanted officially thank you uh you've been great for the district and thank you since i've known you you always put the interest of our students in the district first so thank you very much and give our give our love to jackie thank

032you you guys just need to pray very much we will absolutely thank you all right and then i'm going to invite hilda vazquez the 28th is her retirement place good evening everybody it's great to see you happy new year president javar bore trustees superintendent matsuda executive cabinet and esteemed guest joining us students parents staff and community members it's great to see you tonight and give you a short report a lot of what has been said by our student trustee and also for the other unions i just want to reiterate how busy we are already this year we're two weeks into the second semester but everything is in the full swing of things we are in the middle of winter season for sports so as you heard everyone is working diligently to make sure that all

033of our services all of our athletics all of our activities are happening and i definitely want to recognize and we are incredibly grateful for everyone going above and beyond to cover making sure that all of our services and everything happening on the site is happening and so as you heard earlier it has definitely been a busy two weeks and yes we've already cleared our schedules for tomorrow counselors at my side administrators to make sure we have classes covered um we want to make sure we're there to support each other we know we're going to get through this it's just a little bit difficult right now so we just want to let you know that we're doing everything in our power to make sure everyone is safe and also making sure that our protocols are in

034place and that students and classes are happening um as you know because we do have some students at home uh we also have begun some discussions and creative discussions about maybe online tutoring or supports from counselors office hours during the day things like that and also even possibly doing some during the day portfolios or even doing some of the fafsa applications and so even if they are home giving them the opportunity to continue not to only work on the content but on the things that they need the services for from every school site and so we're working on that and coming up with some creative ideas um also as mentioned earlier we are preparing for our servathon there is a list the activities directors have a list of all the activities for the sites and

035as you notice a really wonderful event for our students to give back some sites have moved the servathon day because of the staff to saturday which is great it's an opportunity also for students to come and so we do have ongoing activities on some sites monday some other activities on saturday paired up with saturday academy we also have been passing out the testing kits at the school sites at the comprehensive high schools we did that on sunday this past week so i want to thank the district staff all the people that worked on sunday to provide that those kits for our communities and our students and lastly i want to thank you i know that this is a school board appreciation month and as many of you have echoed trustee piercy your leadership last year

036and instrumental but every single one of you your voice on the way that you empower our students and the way that you continue to lead our district uh is really powerful for everyone here and so i want to thank you for your service and that is all for my report have a great evening thank you all right our next item is our ptsa report and i don't see anybody from ptsa here nobody right okay we'll move on to our presentations oh my god apga you say we had somebody else here i know that's a guy somebody new good evening thank you for having us i'm michelle bennett i'm representing apga tonight um i'm also representing kennedy uh for a story a student story and i'm jamie nguyen i am the lead counselor at walker junior

037high and i am here to share a story about walker students thank you so i'm going to actually talk about a student i had in 1999 when i started at south and the reason is because this student actually has been a driving force for me all these years even when after i've been transferred to kennedy and with any student i've worked with in the district and so in 1999 after columbine a principal had referred a student to me because of staff and teachers being very concerned about his behavior and when i started working with him he just did not talk at all he did not express himself at all or anything continued to work with him and he liked to draw so i just let him come into my office and let him do artwork

038i noticed his artwork there was a lot of disturbing things he was drawing a lot of killing a lot of blood a lot and this was concerning after columbine right so very high alert he still never spoke and it took a few months and we made it talking points and he finally started expressing himself and i know this seems like a very extreme story but i have a point to it he started expressing um all the disturbing things of why he was expressing this his mom was a prostitute his older brothers were beating him with a baseball bat his uncles were abusing him so this brought us as a school team together to how to help this student and you know we got law enforcement together we got child protective services and it really took

039a team to help the student and we did and a few years later i got transferred to kennedy and i got a phone call from a group home and a caseworker told me that this particular student wanted to thank me and south junior high for helping him save his life and so i know this seems extreme but it is really a driving force for me because there are impossible cases the student would not talk at all and um it's still a little bit emotional for me so bigger picture i feel very blessed to be a counselor in this district because we have the we're able to have the position and all the skills to collaborate with so many people we collaborate with district we collaborate with administration teachers social workers school psychologists law enforcement outside

040agencies like so many people but that's our job and we're able to do this and we're able to help students academically social emotionally and just being able to survive so um that's my story so yeah yeah so thank you thank you to the board for supporting counselors thank you for the district personnel to supporting counselors thank you very shallow so i'll kind of piggyback on on her story i think collaboration is is a big thing that counselors work and we we all know it takes a village to take care of a student to raise to raise a child and i think we're part of that village we're kind of the coordinator of the village in a sense so my story comes from a couple years ago as well right shortly after school started a student

041showed up to enroll in seventh grade he came with his grandmother who was also his foster mom at the time he had been removed from his home from his mom for safety issues come to find out when i was sitting down to register him and kind of get his background story his mom had not had him in school for several years because she was homeschooling him at home which didn't really sound like he was getting much of an education so i strategically scheduled him into classes where i knew that there would be teachers that could support him extra instructional aides that might be in there to offer support since he was missing out on some vital skills uh we started school he started off in classes and immediately was overwhelmed not only did you know

042the the academic work you know become too difficult for him but just the day-to-day sitting in a classroom and understanding that you can't get up when you want you can't shout out you have to raise your hand he didn't have any of those skills so he would come to me crying overwhelmed my job was to try to figure out how to calm him down how to get him support so we did a lot of breathing exercises grounding exercises journaling trying just to get him to the point where he could go back into class i ended up collaborating with our emt team and we decided eventually to test him for special ed which he ended up qualifying for so we were able to give him some more support he left for summer come back as an

043eighth grader almost a completely different student he was thriving he had friends he had confidence so just watching the dynamic in him change watching him become successful watching him make friends it was it was you know heartwarming for me he's somebody i still think about i do know currently he's a sophomore in our district and he has a 3.71 gpa so despite you know where he started he's come a long way and i just i love the opportunity to be able to see that happen with students to be able to be part of a team that's pushing students in the right direction to get them all the supports that they need so thank you guys so much for listening i do have a gift for you because it is national school board month so on

044behalf of our kindness club and our five seas coaches i have a hand sanitizer and a stress ball for each of you thank you so much thank you very much [Music] again thank you for sharing the stories i think apga does a fantastic job of actually explaining and getting counselors to come out and speak so i appreciate the stories thank you very much all right thank you and i want to say also it is amazing having been a teacher uh counselor even more so touches so many lives in so many ways and to be able to look back on how you really helped a student is always phenomenal and it's such a good feeling and to to be able to keep track of them too and when they come back once in a while that's

045when you really find out they don't always come back so you don't always know but it's really heartwarming to hear your story thank you both of you thank you thank you very much i'm using the stress ball all so nice thank you all right uh next are presentations and i'm gonna invite uh mr manuel colon to make the presentation or introduce the presentation thank you thank you president jabbar and board of trustees it is my honor and pleasure to introduce and bring up our uh anaheim high school biotechnology pathway who uh you're going to be treated and amazed at how far it is and and the wonderful work that is being done at anaheim high school i don't want to steal any of their thunder so to introduce and uh the presentation and also introduce

046the presenters i'm going to bring up our coordinator a 21st century career readiness mr scott rendell thank you ma'am well so good evening board of trustees cabinet members of our audience and community members i'm proud to introduce our team from anaheim high school and sycamore junior high school to uh representing the biotechnology exclusive pathway in the next few minutes you'll hear about their progress which represents a great example of one of our our most important 5cs collaboration you'll see that represented in their presentation and in the results that they've achieved and that they're presenting to you tonight and that's that's very evident tonight and very proud of the work that they've done at this time i'd like to invite principal robert saldivar of anaheim high school to tell you more and to continue the presentation

048the state of california by innovate bio a national network that provides leadership in biotechnology technical technical education including support for the development and sharing of best practices and emerging technologies and biotechnology workforce two of these schools are located here in our district i want to take this moment to acknowledge and thank our board of trustees and our district for having the vision and surrounding us with more than enough support to make this happen north orange county rop for believing in the vision and immediately coming on board to help build this program and again our all-star teams both at sycamore junior high school and anaheim high school for all of the hard work dedication and commitment in successfully getting this program off the ground now allison conrad our assistant principal overseeing career technical education and career

049pathways for anaheim high school will further explain thank you everyone thank you and good evening as simon snack says our why is not the result or the product it's our purpose our cause it's our belief and inspired organizations think and work from the inside out using the career preparedness systems framework auhc's leading model for workforce development in our pledge as the blueprint the biotechnology leadership team was created and began planning in the spring of twenty twenty despite the challenges of the covid pandemic our team persevered in creating a robust support infrastructure this has included locating and equipping a lab recruiting an industry-based educational professional implementing a sequence of courses for a two-year pathway developing a logo and a marketing plan vertically aligning from elementary outreach through post-secondary options collaborating to integrate with a rigorous core

050of academic courses we make decisions with our students in mind they are at the center of these critical skills outlined in the cps framework the 21st century skills the technical skills the cultivation of student voice and purpose anaheim students are effective communicators and collaborators they think critically to solve relevant issues and have meaningful and creative solutions to problems they act globally using their own civic voice to take informed action to better themselves their school and their communities and our students do all of this with compassion and upstanding character these are the cornerstones of instruction and reflection throughout ahsd courses and our extracurricular opportunities and they're deeply embedded in the development of the anaheim high school biotechnology campus our future looks bright as we're building the necessary framework to support our students all the way from

051sycamore junior high school to senior high school with us at anaheim and through to post-secondary options students can look at three ways to access relevant career opportunities in biotechnology there are opportunities they can access directly out of high school or that they can undertake while concurrently enrolled at one of our community colleges such as fullerton college there are also career options after they complete their associate degree and technical certifications and finally students can opt to complete their biotechnology focused bachelor's degree at a traditional university or miracosta college while some options are locally listed here there are many others that are available and now i have the honor to introduce one of our collaborative partners gail kairis from north orange county rop good evening and thank you for the opportunity to partner with you in this

052innovative and very exciting venture um as alison was talking about the wise the biggest why or purpose whenever we're planning a career education pathway is to ensure that there's meaningful sustainable and lucrative job opportunities for students at the end of the program and so for this we looked at the labor market data the 2021 california economic impact report which references the fiscal year 2020. these numbers reflect significant economic and labor market impact of the biotechnology throughout our state as you can see there's 1.37 million total jobs that's direct and indirect generated by this industry that puts 131 billion dollars into the households of californians in 2020 when we were going through difficult economic times the biotechnology industry jumped 19.6 percent on this index but more importantly to us as we prepare our students is that

053the public and private investments of venture capital grants and patents are indicators of only the beginning of the future of this particular industry and pathway here in orange county we had a total of 162 000 jobs again direct and indirect generated by biotechnology with an average salary of 122 000 again putting 15 billion dollars into the pockets of our orange county households this chart evidence is the earlier slide that was marking orange county as a hub for both medical device and biopharmaceuticals as your partner in career education we specialize in recruiting training and supporting highly qualified professionals from industry so in this case our scientist works collaboratively with academic professionals at the high school they deliver a rigorous course of study but importantly in a real world context giving our students a unique advantage of

054just essentially growing up in an environment where they have those technical or hard skills that we talk about in the career preparedness framework and those hard skills and the soft skills that we know that are so crucial to life's success and so next i proudly introduce to you our teaching scientist miss stephanie spangler good evening my name is stephanie spingler i'm the biotechnology instructor at anaheim high school i'm very excited to be part of this exciting new pathway i recently departed my laboratory position in the pharmaceutical industry this past july following the completion of my masters of arts and teaching so the continually changing environment of the pandemic serves as a constant reminder just how vital the study and application of biotechnology is at the present time and in the future recently my classes have

055looked at various aspects of biotechnology careers bioethics antibiotics vaccines gain of function research laboratory safety and human anatomy students have engaged in learning the complex world of these antibiotics and vaccines by exploring their historical impact on society as well as their tremendous advancement in the field of medicine one of the key skills students have focused on this term is acknowledging both sides of the controversy and debate over vaccines and antibiotic resistance students also had multiple opportunities to explore and discuss while expressing their thoughts on how best to educate themselves when making decisions about their health and well-being so our biotech students continue to progress in their exploration of pipetting and microscopy skills and they have most recently completed the process of running their first gel electrophoresis so this spring term we're looking forward to working

056with bacterial cells in microscopy we are also looking forward to chromatography and dna extraction and students will also have the opportunity to join the spring medical innovations research entrepreneurship also known as meijer with university lab partners to further explore the world of biotechnology and earn credits while collaborating on designing a pediatric innovation with other students so our students embody the talent needed for a continually evolving world and biotech and with the help of this program they can jump start their careers with confidence and industry knowledge thank you so next i'm going to introduce allison loper who will discuss the curricular alignments being built to support our students thank you good evening oh sorry good evening my name is allison loper and i am the biotechnology exclusive pathway coordinator i have been working on developing a

057biotechnology campus at anaheim we are developing systems of support across many curricular areas as we recognize that biotechnology touches all areas of education really as such we have formed a team of teachers who work closely to align and intertwine curriculums because biotechnology has the flexibility to integrate itself into all curriculums we are exercising the english curriculum with a biotechnology view mrs naranjo is teaching innovation to commercialization english and product development with an emphasis on biotechnology and mr flores is teaching english 9 reading writing and research in social entrepreneurship as they look for biotechnological solutions to real world problems in our world mr duarte a math teacher has worked on developing a math related data analytics class with the ultimate goal of providing students the opportunity to earn a google data analytics certification now mrs metcalf

058and myself have been preparing for the 2022-23 launch of a both of both biology and chemistry with biotechnology entwined finally but not least all of us are collaborating with miss fingler to support students in the biotechnology cte pathway additionally biotechnology is also working on creating a virtual hub where teachers across the campus can access articles and relevant media materials to augment any curriculum with a biotechnology lens this is just one more tool to enhance anaheim high school's biotechnology campus anaheim high school has also been developing vertical alignment with the schools associated with anaheim sycamore junior high has been working closely with tiger woods foundation to develop a curriculum that is relevant and pertinent to biotechnology sycamore will provide introductory skill set development so students in both grade levels will become familiar and gain exposure to

059biotechnology before they come to anaheim anaheim high school will provide opportunities for students to learn more deeply about the various aspects of biotechnology now this high school experience may include dual enrollment with collision college professors providing the opportunity for our students to start their biotechnology one certification prior to entering the community college pretty exciting once students complete the pathway at anaheim high school they will be ready to continue their education at fullerton college where they will complete the biotechnology level 1 certificate or they may strive for further proficiency in biotechnology should students wish to receive a bachelor's degree in biotechnology they may continue their education at miracosta community college a ba from a community college y'all this is really amazing so um truly the wave of the future is here now and now i turn

060it back to miss conrad for the conclusion of our presentation next you will see a video that was produced by the auhsd team under the leadership of john bautista and we hope the sheriff's to show you everything we've been describing to you [Music] so biotechnology is a very broad area that covers many many aspects that we're looking at biology in general and how biology in general to kind of work for our own benefits so kind of like that kind of place foreign all of that kind of plays into the big broad area of what biotechnology is and how we can use it as a society biotechnology is a process of utilizing advanced technology developed from biology to solve real-world problems we're looking at a lot of different areas that biotechnology can actually lead into including

061coming up with solutions for diseases there's also genetic engineering where we can use microbial genetics in order to produce products like medicine even biology to solve real world problems we also we're looking at a lot of different areas that biotechnology can actually reach into including coming up with solutions for diseases there's also genetic engineering where we can use microbial genetics in order to produce products like medicine even things like insulin and various proteins we also use biotechnology in agriculture and helping us develop food that has the correct nutrients in it so that we can create a much healthier food product so at anaheim high school here our biotech 1 and 2 will prepare students for a career in biotech they will be getting hands-on experience using lab equipment that they would use in industry they'll

062also be focusing on the five c's so we'll be working with learning how to have patience while doing things like gel electrophoresis learning how to work as a team learning how you can explore your careers things like bioethics and how that plays into the jobs and the market that is going to be so very big and influential in biotech so they're getting a really hands-on feel for what it's like to work in a lab students will be on the cutting edge of some of the biggest jobs that are going to start showing up in industry we're already seeing especially with the pandemic a tremendous pull for public health new research and pharmaceuticals new research and vaccines and health so students will really be engaged in the next cutting edge of jobs and all kinds of

063fields that are going to be popping up with biotechnology i heard it was a new class here in anaheim high school and it caught my interest that i had the opportunity to learn a little more about medicine and technology and how it can help our everyday life we started really looking at the vertical alignment and recognizing that if we want kids to really enjoy the truth of science we've got to start now so we went out to a showcase and we talked to elementary school students and it was fascinating to see how excited they got when they were able to micropipette students really need to be exposed and have an idea you know what do i want to do when i grow up and science is such an exciting field that they can go into

064especially biotech these are very specific jobs and different careers they can do so to get some first-hand knowledge it was really fun to work with colleagues we had a lot of students from fullerton some techs helping us out students will be coming in from the variety of anaheim city elementary but the junior highs that are going to be promoting and supporting the biotechnology program start with sycamore junior high i got into biotechnology in eighth grade uh thanks to my teacher miss clavis so in her class we did a lot of labs that mimic kind of what scientists do on a daily basis in labs and when we were doing them i really enjoyed it and i knew that that's kind of something that i wanted to continue doing so i signed up for the class

065here at night so middle school we start our career explorations and then start exploring the pathways and all the different jobs that are available in biotech they also in the junior high will be learning some of the the mainstays the central dogma if they can start learning that part in junior high once they come into the high school level then we can really start digging into the technical components of biotechnology there's four different certificates that they can get once they've gone through the biotechnology pathway at sycamore and anaheim i would totally recommend this class because it's a great way to get experience and especially if you're interested in the medical field if you like to do medicine if you like to do dissections if you like the human anatomy and stuff like that then i

066would consider joining it because it's actually really fun i would strongly encourage them to try it out at least if they're not sure if they like science or not we do a lot of labs we also learn about modern technology and how it's applied in the real world there are also a lot of career options that they could apply for based off the experience they gain in the class after this last semester ended i started thinking what are my options what am i going to do for college and i'm considering something about it really start preparing for that career we start working with fullerton college we have a dual enrollment with them so students can come right about out of our classes very well prepared to go into fullerton college work in a biotech lab

067they'll feel comfortable using the equipment they will have gained a lot of great skills working in the lab and just have a really good background on everything that they can do with biotech [Applause] so hopefully you got to see a little bit and as you saw our students presenting and also what you saw them doing in action in the classroom so we want to really thank you board of trustees cabinet and all those present here to hear about the biotechnology career pathway development updates and the exciting opportunities at anaheim high school's biotechnology campus we also want to thank our district leadership whose innovation really made this pathway possible i know that principal saldivar spoke about it earlier but truly your vision your guidance you've offered us unlimited support so we can help our students reach

068their unlimited potential to avail themselves of unlimited opportunities it truly is unlimited you and we thank you especially also to scott rendell amanda bean and carlos hernandez you've made the cps framework real for us and real for students additionally we want to acknowledge and show great appreciation for all of the collaborative partners that you can see shown here who have joined us along this journey we have full confidence in the future of our world we know that we're sending anaheim students going out there prepared for meaningful and purposeful jobs in our community thank you so much and good evening all right thank you very much for that really awesome presentation i'll reserve my comments but i'll start off with uh mr o'neil do you have any questions or uh a wonderful presentation really enjoyed seeing

069um what our students are able to get their hands into now and really a hands-on learning experience sort of like cal poly learn you know hands-on learning uh i'm assuming mr rendell that that not only is it anaheim but it this is sort of paralleled over to oxford so it's similar but different in what they're going through [Laughter] so yeah there's definitely parallels and and collaboration on the curriculum because it's north orange county rop that's providing the curriculum but at anaheim high school um a a little bit of a different approach on product innovation and pharmacology so so it may evolve and look a little different than oxford and and of course that collaboration allows uh both schools to to continue to improve and get better a great opportunity we're giving our students thank you

070so much thank you miss uh trailer so uh did i hear correctly some of the steps that you said uh robert that there are only 13 of these type of pathway collaborative process schools that are in in this in statewide correct recognized by innovate bio yes 13 and two here in our district okay so they have there may be some but they haven't been recognized in that way correct and this collaborative team started in so yes so we we just we're talking about how you know we obviously we didn't point that out um the conversation started with you know mr mike masuda prior to the pandemic and division that cabinet and our district had and with the support of our board of trustees and then we hit the pandemic and all of this happened during

071the pandemic and and into present time you know present day um so we're super excited for what the future holds when you know when we don't have these challenges in front of us these adversities that we're facing um obviously you know there's things that have come up that we want to continue to have conversations with cabinet and then with your support you know to sustain this momentum that we have moving forward um so i'll make sure i book an appointment with mr matuta for that conversation but you know we have some ideas we have some ideas and i'm sure you guys will be in full support but it's it's it was during the pandemic that a lot of this was a lot of the building blocks and the foundation was being laid but thank you

072again for the support you know and the vision that you know mr mike matsuda and cabinet have brought to the district and with your support obviously this is what we're producing so thank you we've built capacity through our work at magnolia high school with cyber security obviously we've built capacity at kennedy high school with artificial intelligence and with the ilab we are forging ahead and these types of partnerships we could not do it without rop without fullerton cypress college that uc irvine and of course all of our business and aim partners as well wow this is a certainly a tremendous demonstration of the unlimited you um i got chills i had to put my sweater on this is just an amazing amazing feat that you all had accomplished and i i know how much this

073means to you robert and and everybody thank you for your collaboration and all your efforts and uh this is an amazing amazing future for our students an opportunity for them so thank you i wish i went back to high school and couldn't participate in this just think wow how to get the word out to the public of what we just saw yep yeah that's amazing let me uh right person no go ahead go ahead i'll raise my coffee's good will you let me go first oh gee thank you okay now this is phenomenal okay and this is a proof that our district is forward thinking we keep adding more and more pathways that are evidence of training for the 21st and 22nd century we're not stuck in the past i've been with this school district

074for many years and i've always felt we are forward thinking and we are still forward thinking and the fact that we have two of 13 of the pathways that just says you know scores of things and i and it's great and i'm really glad to hear what's going on at anaheim because as mike had said we started the cyber security and we got the artificial intelligence and we have you know different ones they know legal and law and legal whatever but this is great because we are giving our students an opportunity to learn and then immediately either go into a job or study further to go up more on the ladder so we're not pushing all of our students to a four-year university we're giving them options and that's phenomenal and that's what i want

075to see more of and i'm very proud that this district keeps coming up with new and great cte pathways and thank you too for the rop for working with us and allowing us to do this because i don't think we could do it without the cooperation of rop because they really give us that ability to bring in scientists and you know and that type of thing so thank you very much that's great i am so glad to hear about all this thank you thank you miss piercy miss smith i often think that the word exciting is overused in this day and age but i am truly excited to learn about the exposure and the experience that these young people it's not cookie cutter this is so way out of the box of just when i

076was in school or when the folks running the school district were in school and beyond anything that you have done is just almost unimaginable and i want to thank you from the bottom of my hearts and i know there will be students that will come back and say years from now thank you for just offering this it is truly exciting and i from my heart thank you it's just a joy to see you all thank you miss smith well i'll just uh i think everything has been told about the program but i'll just tell you that the video came out i believe on thursday last thursday or was it last last week and ever since that video was published on facebook i've been getting a lot of people who have been not only talking about

077it but very excited and sharing it and i just wanted to clarify because some of the people who asked that question i said that it was our students and john i think you did the video right yeah myself all the clips on that video with students using the technology and you know the every single clip in there was from our classrooms and that's what i wanted to like really emphasize because some of the folks who thought that we took like stock clips from the website and just put it in there and i said no that's really happening in our classroom so i want to thank the teachers uh first and foremost for actually creating that environment you know a student wearing that white lab coat is you know we might think that it's just a

078lab coat but mindset for a student who wants to pursue that career is huge wearing that lab coat and then seeing you you know putting that in the beaker the the little uh i don't know i i'll leave the the technical works to you guys but you know it's just amazing to watch it and i want to definitely come into a classroom and see when it's safe for us to walk into a classroom uh and then the other part is the stakeholder collaboration right the the fact that sycamore junior high is part of it with tiger woods foundation and then the fact that rop is part of it the fact that fullerton college is part of it with our pledge partners and then finding out that a student could actually go to miracles to college

079and get a bachelor's degree right huge for a community auhsd but huge for anaheim high school and that community and that is what i wanted to emphasize is because students who come from that neighborhood probably wouldn't have an opportunity to get and feel what we're doing and i'm glad that we're providing that opportunity as a district thank you very much for that thank you mike for coming up with the vision and i'm glad that you know uh we we have uh forward-thinking folks in our district who are looking at it and making sure that we provide this opportunity for our students so thank you and welcome back robert we're glad that you're back thank you thank you everyone [Applause] all right so next we have on our agenda is 8.2 that's the public hearing on

080our trustee area maps and that's going to be call making the presentation or introducing the presentation uh yes if you'd like to open the public hearing we can go ahead and do that um all right i open the public hearing thank you president jabbar trustees uh i'd like to welcome this evening angela vanqualos with cooperative strategies as well as michael toy an attorney with parker and covert they'll be here tonight to introduce the public hearing which of course is an opportunity for members of our community to share any input they have on the redistricting process that we're going through right now as a district just as a reminder to the trustees in the community auhsd does have five trustees each trustee has its own geographic area that it serves the education code requires us every

08110 years in alignment with the federal census to make sure that our boundaries remain uh proportionate so that there are proportional numbers of people within each of the boundary areas that is served by each of you as trustees with that i will turn it over to angela she will be presenting some information to us tonight about community input that has been received so far she'll also present the status of where we are in the process and of course take any questions that trustees may have thank you evening members of the board and the executive cabinet again my name is angela banuelos i'm the associate director at cooperative strategies i'm the demographer who assisted with the scenarios that i will be presenting tonight so just a quick recap that my colleague justin rich has presented at

082the previous board meetings uh currently within the district change of the 2010 census and the 2020 census data there has been a change of 3.3 percent for a total of 13 000 inhabitants so that means that the population increased over the last 10 years and then we're going to be talking about like what does that mean currently so here we provided a color graduated map that provides the density of population for the largest protected class voters in this case the latino hispanic community we provided this because this is what assists us with identifying the those protect the class voters and where they reside and also assisting with the balance of population uh here you can see that the darker the area the more dense in population the lighter the area the less dense i'd like

083you to note the top right corner of the district boundary map and we will discuss that further in the next few slides so the current variance for the district in comparison of the 2010 and 2020 census data is nine percent the allowable threshold allowed with this process is being below ten percent so the district's current boundaries are again at a nine percent variance so in each scenario we're going to be seeing that trusty area number one is gonna be the yellow trusty area two it's gonna be the green trust area three is the pink or coral color trusty area 4 is the blue and trusty area 5 is the purple color on slide four we have the demographic of the current scenario which is option one uh here again the total population that means that

084everyone who lives within the district uh regardless of age citizenship status just every body within the school district boundaries is 455 inhabitants so in order to get the ideal trusty area size so what the ideal trusty area size is is the the number of inhabitants that we're trying to get close to for each area so in order to get that number we take the whole population and we divide that by five in this case which is five trustee board members and again the total variance is nine percent and then so how do we calculate the variance so we take the most populated area and we get the difference of the least populated area and we divide that by the trustio the the the ideal trustee area size to give us that variance currently in trustee

085area 1 if we look at the citizen voting age population which is the cvap we see that the hispanic latino community has the voting power of 55.8 percent so what does that mean well when we're trying to create majority protected class areas when they protect the class voter demographic is above 50 that classifies as a protected majority area when the total population is above 50 percent that means it's a plural district meaning that the representation for the total population is the protected class however that does not classify as a protected class area because those are not voters that is just the total population and cvap are the actual people eligible to vote based on earlier recommendations we were asked to try and create a second majority protected class area for the latino hispanic community currently

086i have here a snapshot of the scenario option two the current boundaries of the of the current trustee areas are outlined in purple and the high school attendance boundaries are outlined in red just to easily identify where those changes occurred so in scenario in option two this was drawn again in consideration of balancing the population between trustee area one and two and a noteworthy detail is we were able to accomplish that second majority protected class district uh in trustee area two and based on c-vap data there are two majority areas area one and two again another detail that i'd like to point out based on uh our previous meeting was a sycamore junior high school boundary uh the population decreased from and 55 seven uh to forty five thousand nine hundred and ninety one so

087what does that mean that is the total population within just the sycamore junior high school boundary that's just the difference we can see that in scenario one uh currently there's 55 inhabitants within that area and then in area 2 there's 9 9132 if we look at scenario 2 or option 2 the representation within the sycamore junior high school boundaries attendance boundaries is 45 ninety 991. uh in option two it it in area two it increases to nineteen thousand thirty eight um and we'll look over the demographics so again the total population within the district is 399 455. the ideal trustee area size is 79 option 2 gives us the lowest variance at 2.1 percent well below the 10 allowable threshold we circle trusty area one under the c-vap column and trust the area two under

088the sea of app column to help identify that those are 50 or above to create those protected class areas at her previous special meeting there was a suggestion to bring sycamore junior high school and maintained that school within area one so we went ahead and created a scenario 2a to provide the demographics and the breakdown of that unfortunately due to the shape and the north side that is a lot of population so if we look at the actual census block and i'm going to go back a few slides to slide two just to to look at the census blocks if we look at the top right corner we see that the hispanic latino community there is very concentrated that means it's really dark right and the area where sycamore junior high school is it's a

089huge triangle census block so meaning we're we're not going to be able to divide that census block to bring it back into trustee area one because we have to keep the areas compact and contiguous and if we take that triangle we have to take the population above it again because we are not allowed to gerrymander or crack or pack we have to keep the areas con contiguous so if we go back to scenario 2a that is what we had to do there on the on the north side of trustee area one um north side of trustee area two so the whole like was uh sycamore junior high school and above had to be moved back into area one so what does that mean well scenario two was was a consideration to come to you know

090keeping the sycamore junior high school in area one and balancing the population between tristy ariel 1 and 2. the population variance complies with the 10 legal threshold however unlike scenario 2 we were not able to create the second majority protected class and that was shown on slide two when we talked about the population density up on the north side this particular scenario or scenario 2a has a variance of 7.4 and we circled trusty area 1 to show that that is the only majority area we created at a 55.7 percent um area two with those changes the c vap is at 49.7 percent so it's not above the 50 threshold to create it to create a protected class and then more recently we were tasked with trying to see if we can create a majority protected

091area for the asian population in area four and five however there are not enough voters eligible voters in those areas to be able to create a protected class while keeping the population balanced so that was not a so we didn't bring that scenario because it just was not a valid option and here we are in the process today we are at the first public hearing and then um on february 3rd we would be anticipating to adopt the final trustee area and with that i'll leave that to questions and mr mike toy is also here if anyone has any legal questions or if you have any questions for myself did we get any uh public comments oh uh we only received two so far and then it split uh someone suggested scenario one and another person

092suggested scenario two we did not get any submissions for maps so that that was all we have okay uh i'll open it up for questions no questions uh trustee run detail cersei pissy no no questions thank you smith very good presentation okay so i have some questions my questions are um sure so i suggested i i mean i i love the fact that or i love to have a trustee area 2 as a protected majority right a latino majority district there i'm i'm wondering and i see the demographics and then the census tract in terms of taking a look at the the northeast corner or the top corner of the map where we are having issues with sycamore to kind of accomplish that right i'm wondering because i definitely want to somebody who is representing

093trustee area one right now i definitely want to keep sycamore and anaheim in trustee area one right i am trying to see if we could accomplish because that could happen only with the current scenario uh one and no actually it doesn't happen with one it actually happens with the trustee area in the scenario two right correct two so trustee area uh the scenario two actually takes sycamore away from uh the trustee area one and puts it into trusty area two so with the scenario two a i am wondering if there is an option where we can actually go um i i'm assuming you probably played around with it uh quite enough to figure out that you can't have it but i'm just asking if there is a way if you see uh broadway right cut

094across there is that dark brown area which is a rectangular area which which i see uh which puts it at i think 80 to 100 percent right do you see the area that i'm talking about you're talking about the uh the west side of trustee area one right yes so right underneath lincoln yes i i know exactly what you're talking about so i'm wondering if you cut across there and still keeping sycamore and trusty area one if you could accomplish creating a second uh latino majority district in two i'm very glad you you asked that question uh we were able to create a second majority projected class area using that method however the variance was 36 percent so the the population balance was not below the 10 percent threshold and it just goes to how

095um usually um so as a demographer what i look at is where these protected classes reside and if there's any spec like special enclaves right you usually have like a downtown area or special areas where where the majority of those populations live however in this case it's just so dispersed within the two areas that it was it was this was the best scenario for option two to create that with keeping the population balance okay all right so i think we have two options so we still have opportunities if the community wanted to present maps they could present it at the uh given dates and then it will be presented back to us for the next public hearing in february yes absolutely so we actually make a decision on which map to go with yes so

096currently the school district has a link under the redistricting website that allows the community either to provide their input or any option that they would like to suggest and there's an additional link where they can upload their map in either a pdf format or a jpeg there's four other formats that are allowable for that the moment that we receive that will definitely generate the scenario and make sure that we provide that in advance for a council to review and provide to you for an option if it's viable so let me ask you uh is there a way to in uh scenario or 2a i should say right in scenario 2a we keeps you know we're not keeping sycamore well actually we are keeping sycamore in area one right barely yes uh that that triangle uh

097so where where the divider is between trusty area one and two and up to east la palma avenue that triangle that's just one census block it's uh that's how the census block was created for the 2020 um census redistricting and we that's what we have to follow and because it's such a large census block again it goes back to keeping the areas compact and contiguous had it been a smaller area then it would have been easier to kind of keep it in area one but because it's just it's really overpopulated census block it's uh that the whole north side has to go to either trusty area one or two so let me ask you the question of is there a way to maybe take trustee area two because i see a census block which is

098populated with uh 80 to 100 right on the um [Music] i think it's i i don't know if it's it's not euclid i think it's uh the dividing line there is right like cerritos maybe it's like by east uh southeast street i'm looking at ball in this area right here oh down there yeah down there okay so i'm wondering if you expand the trusty area too a little bit to go above on that side it will still create what we it wouldn't no it would not i think i sat down with council and and uh we went over our door options okay yeah um uh i i really the attempt was made in many different ways not only did i look at it i had my law my colleagues provide their input uh just to

099confirm what we're presenting today okay perfect well i think i've exhausted my my questions because i think i was trying to create something somewhere but it looks like you guys have looked at all those options which i'm sure you have we were definitely trying to at uh different ways and and making sure that we balance the population and create uh the suggested second cbap area thank you very much you're very well i don't think i have any questions looks like the board doesn't have any questions so thank you for the presentation thank you we look forward to the rest of the maps and uh or the same maps unless community presents more maps absolutely february second meeting okay well we'll see you then thank you have a good appreciate it thank you and should i

100close the uh well i think first we should invite whether there's any members of the public who would like to submit input otherwise yes we may close the public hearing sure is there anybody else who would like to speak on this particular public hearing regarding maps i don't see anybody rushing to the podium so i could assume that nobody is there so i close the public hearing all right thank you very much steph and now we go to public comments i got to read this uh public comments open session opportunities for public comments occur at the beginning of each agenda item and at this time for items not on the agenda persons wishing to address the board of trustees should complete a speaker request form this one available on the information table at the back

101of the room and submitted to the executive assistant prior to the meeting each speaker is limited to a maximum of five minutes each topic or item is limited to a total of 20 minutes and board members cannot immediately respond to public comments as stated on the speaker request form having said that the first speaker that i have is maza i'm going to have you come in [Applause] good night and it's happy new year and um i'm just very uh happy that as i drove this way i um psychologically it felt really really good inside to not see a image of a of a um many you can call them conquistador or a um pilgrim that represents to us a very negative stuff in our communities and not just in in this continent but throughout the

102world in africa and asia as well our asian brothers and sisters are also indigenous peoples but i want to thank you for what we uh decided the vote that you guys did was very powerful um i just came back from four different five different native american reservations just came in this today and a lot of those reservations are on the border there was never a border there on the u.s mexico side and they heard about this and they're very happy in the decisions that were made last year in december and the one vote we still have love for you smith and um but we still have a lot of work to do and adding the native american class is very important psychologically physically emotionally spiritually as a native person as a meshika and i keep

103saying the word latino hispanic but we know that the word hispanic is the conquistadors the colonists latino is also italian christopher columbus was in italian latino latin but with time we will change things and i know we still have um to have not when we have the uh native american class course i think it's also important to uh when we invite the tongues which would be virgina carmelo i know we're working with her and some of the uh high school teachers at anaheim high school there will be a book hopefully you guys can approve or push for that to be approved it's called uh the first angelinos and it's about the tangos and i think it's very important that the students learn that this is territory and and last i would like to um say

104that we're uh going to be here just a couple of us are here our ancestors are here and now there is a video of virginia camilla on youtube um somehow we're trying to find a way to email some of you i don't know if the emails are being sent we're being blocked and in that video we sent the video and as virginia carmelo says the word colonist is very degrading to us indigenous peoples the word colonists represents many negative things that we're not going to get into here and so we are here in a peaceful way and if we were hurting or the way we acted the way we did last meeting it was not because of um obviously not joy we're confused and we're still confused are we changing the name of the colonists

105or it's just it's just the mascot because we do demand they change both and there'll be more of us coming this year and we're going to come in a peaceful way not in a radical way and but i thank you a lot for what you did and i know it's hard for some of us to overstand because some of you still understand and you were taught maybe from a european perspective your eurocentric way of teaching we have our own native teachings we think circular family why is it that when our parents or grandparents they get old we take care of them in our native cultures as ethnic cultures and in the non-native anglo-saxon colonists they don't care about the elders that's just an example of how big our hearts are look grand big heart we're

106in the continent of turtle island and so the tribes are with us the tangos are not fairly recognized they only stayed recognized and the reason they're not coming here is because they have fear of not being federally recognized thank you so much thank you so much thank you and our next speaker is marianne almero hello once again board of trustees my name is marianne my native name is jetot it means creative woman and i come as an alumni of sunkist sycamore and anaheim high school and a 26-year resident of anaheim i come again to emphasize why it is not just the mascot that must be changed but the name colonists as well at the last meeting there was a woman who spoke in concern of the mental health crisis taking place amongst the students in

107the district the rise in cases of depression and suicide attempts she specifically addressed our movement and she stated she wished that we would use our energy to fight for something important like solving the mental health crisis instead of fighting for quote just a name but i'm here to remind you of why colonists is not just a name the name colonist is associated with the erasure and genocide of black and brown people period and the context by which colonists tie into the history of anaheim does not change that fact regardless of the arguments that have been brought up regardless of a money that was invested in a brand new pool the goal of the colonists has always been to erase to kill to remove indigenous people for profit anaheim's colonists are not exempt from this and

108so knowing this association the word colonists ties directly into the mental health crisis that we see in our children today i work in the mental health field as a counselor who works with our youth and the trauma that comes from the erasure of our identity and history the lack of acknowledgement for our loss and our pain the continued dismissal of the needs of black and brown communities all of these things are inherited and experienced by our children and it is why our children don't feel seen don't feel heard don't feel important and don't want to live the name colonist is automatically glorified when tied to an educational institution and with it comes the glorification of our genocide that's not what anaheim high school has ever stood for has it i'm genuinely asking because if this

109is what you stand for if this is what you want to represent if this is how you want our children to feel as if they're insignificant then by all means keep the name but if you care about the well-being of our children and the children that you serve specifically you would please reconsider this you did it for savannah it's time you did it for anaheim high school as well and until it's done i will be here and we will be here and i thank you for your time thank you and our final speaker for the night is maritza bermudez good evening i'm president javar and board members cabinet and everybody else who's present my name is marita bermudez parent from sycamore junior high school i wasn't going to speak this evening but i was listening

110to the biotech presentation and honestly i'm blown away like i am blown away with all the different stuff that's going on with um in within our district and with all these pathways what i would like to see is that these presentations be shared with parents with our community so we can highlight the great things that are happening president jabbar you said you know this is a great opportunity for a lot of our students that live in that community of anaheim high school in sycamore to have great opportunities that they might not have right so um just the other day somebody asked me about the pathways and um i've been trying to advocate i've been in contact with miss amanda bean with others in the district to see how we can connect the elementary schools with

111the high school so we can giving this information to the parents as early as tk preschool so they can see what information what opportunities there are for their students i'm just thinking i have you know my four kids still and i'm just looking at all the pathways all the information all the partners because i do sit on the anaheim collaborative and i like to mention i'm the only parent not that i'm collaborative so i get to know all this information and i'm always so excited and i try to share to the best of my capabilities but the district should be doing that they should be giving out more information at each school right now because of covet it's very difficult it's very different i know our sixth graders from anaheim elementary had a field trip

112to i believe it was savannah high school regarding the cte pathways but what about the parents and you know i'm a big advocate for parent involvement parent engagement and i feel that we're sometimes we lag a little bit on that piece of involving our parents and educating our parents because the feeling i get with all this information i'm like man i want other parents to know you know our even our community what's going on what are we doing uh um as a district and highlighting just everything the amazing stuff that's happening the opportunities so i ask you to please you know let's how can we work and i always say how can we work because i'm if i'm here speaking on it it's because i want to also to be part of that process right

113how do we engage our parents so they can get this information and be as excited that they can be with all the the great things that are happening and you know be that also that motivated for their students you know they're the ones that see the um you know the strengths of their child and say well maybe my child might not go to college right but there's this pathway on this or that and maybe they can benefit from that so i just urge you that we connect more parents with these presentations inform them i don't think we can ever over inform right um we can choose to ignore a message or a call but if we know we're persistent and we get that information out i think we can be more successful with the support

114for our students and that's all i wanted to come say and happy new year to everybody and i'm looking forward to working together for great things this coming year and um just remember that you know we're partners thank you thank you thank you marita all right we are going into items of business and first one on the agenda 10.1 resolution number 2021 slash hr national school counseling week so move second i have a motion and a second and this is a roll call vote and uh i just wanted to say national counseling week focuses on public attention on unique contributions of professional school counselors and how students benefit as a result of what school counselors do and you heard a couple of counselors come in and speak about their experience in the work that they

115do with our students so having said that i will take a vote oh well let me ask a question uh does anybody have any comments i just very uh propose we had two counselors tonight being so eloquent in in what they have done in students lives and it's not them just those two but it's throughout the whole district so this is wonderful recognition anybody else i would just like to say that you never know what another person's job is and what it entails and in schools people just think that kids go to school and they re and write and learn math science and history but they have no concept of the people that are part of the structure of these schools what their jobs entail and tonight these two ladies that shared their stories was

116a real eye-opener for people to understand more in depth what their jobs entail and in my opinion they're just angels do we have a resolution in hand to head out or no we don't okay all right i was going to invite if you have the two councillors sitting here but uh let's go ahead and take a vote mr o'neill hi miss randoltero aye conspiracy and i vote i and we will make sure that we get a resolution to apga thank you uh moving forward educational services 10.2 school-sponsored student organizations move all four we have a motion on the floor and second we have a second and this vote mr abdullah you get to uh vote as well all in favor aye aye and student trustee oh i yeah all right motion passes unanimously business services

117agreement monahan law off law office and i have a motion on the floor in a second any question seeing none all in favor aye aye motion pa uh any opposed motion passes unanimously and 10.4 consulting agreement with eric hall and associates i am going to request that we actually uh pull this item and maybe bring this back if the board board members agree with me do you have any objection to moving this item to bring this back i wanna i had a few questions and uh i think we'll bring this back at uh future board meeting i'll second it yeah no problem all right perfect thank you i don't think uh mr vidal do we need a motion and a second to do that we don't right perfect all righty let's go to 10.5 consulting

118agreement with terry barnes walter boygon health lester and that's uh i have a motion on the floor i have a second any questions seeing none all in favor any opposed motion passes unanimously 10.6 award of public opinion research services true north research inc i'll entertain a motion i have a motion and a second any questions seeing none uh motion passes unanimously you didn't actually i didn't ask for the vote all in favor aye aye aye and your opposed motion passes unanimously all right educational services 10.7 revised board policy uh 0.11 music organizations first reading this is an information item do you have any questions or suggestions seeing that let's go to 10.8 agreement with city of la palma meal gap grant funding distribution it's all moved second i have a motion in a second any

119questions just great relationship perfect and thank you for those comments and uh all in favor aye aye any opposed motion passes unanimously 10.9 educational consulting agreement abigail northley james survived high school moved back second we have a motion and a second any questions i just um would like again a reminder of of why we have this uh uh requirement by the federal categorical is manuel or thank you i know just refresh my memory so we do receive federal funding in the form of title one as you know title ii etc and uh because our surrounding private schools do receive do have students in our community that fit that demographic um they uh they then have access to that funding okay thank you very simple thank you i appreciate that all right thank you and uh

120all in favor aye any oppose motion passes unanimously 10.10 educational consulting agreements brian hamilton and craig jordan so move second we have a motion and a second any questions seeing none all in favor any opposed motion passes unanimously 10.11 was actually pulled 10.12 public hearing disclosure of 2021-22 collective bargaining agreement with astar and this is an information item is that a public hearing yes yes i open public hearing anybody have any questions or any comments from the public seeing none close public hearing and we go to 10.13 adoption of 2021-22 collective bargaining agreement with astar action item second we have a motion second any questions or any comments seeing none all in favor aye any opposed motion passes unanimously perfect 10.14 proposed 20 22 23 2023 24 and 20 24 25 student teacher calendars so

121i moved second and a motionless second any questions yes i have comments and questions both sure okay i brought this up several times about the calendar and i think at the last meeting i brought up the fact that uh we are in this state you know nation of ours looking at climate change well climate change all over the world and i brought up the fact that we had changed our calendar to the point where we are here in southern california having our students start school in the hottest month almost the hottest month of the year second hottest because september will often beat it and i said you know i brought up the fact that we had some of our elementary schools adjust their calendars for the same reason well i find it criminal because these

122kids these young elementary schools are out in recess on blacktop in the heat of the day in the summer and you know it's just it's not necessary and then we hired an uh energy manager here at the camp on at the district several years ago to help bring down our energy costs and i ask for a comparison of what we spent on energy and i looked over these charts and we spend upwards of 600 and so probably 70 000 a month for the month of august and then september is about the same actually in 2019 september went down a little bit but 2019 was an unusual year but still looking at 17 18 and 19 august and september are anywhere from six hundred thousand a month to three hundred and fifty thousand a month and

123that was in 2020 when we were not in we weren't in school yet were we 20 yeah no we started school in august so august went up but then i look at the months of may and june and they're almost half so our costs in may and june are almost half of what they are in august and september so if we were being considerate of energy and how much we use why do we start school in august when we have to run our air conditioners full time to combat the outside heat and the heat of all the students inside as compared to when we had june where we wouldn't need to run the air conditioners as hard so it's a money-saving proposition if we would go back to starting in september i would prefer starting

124in october actually if i was going to be totally climate conscious but i just feel that we changed our calendar i think for a semi-valid reason in other words i voted for it but at the time i thought it was more important than i believe now and it was basically for our ap classes so they would have an additional month of learning time so when it came time to take the test they were better prepared that was my understanding okay and then i discover that all the so many of these ap students they take these tests and if you know a large number pass them with the three or better score but then not all colleges take the credits so then unless they go to a cal state school the chances are they will not

125be getting full credit for them a private colleges don't accept them that much i listened to a girl speaking a couple of years ago at this uh rope she was a graduate or she had been well she graduated from brigham young but she was talking about all her ap classes she took and she said they took none of them so she got no credit for you know in her college well i understand okay i brought this up this has been my one of my other things about that but i understand it's also a prestige thing that the more ap classes they take it looks better on the transcripts and i understand also that these kids don't have to take the class to take the test so a student may take an ap lit class and

126an ap science class but then they can take the ap math they can take you know language they can take any number of tests they want and what got me really surprised is when i looked at the check register a couple months ago and we spend over five hundred thousand that's a half a million dollars a year for ap tests they each cost about a hundred dollars right and so if a kid a kid can take four to seven tests if they want and we are paying for them okay that's a different battle but right now what i am saying is i do not agree on this calendar we started moving the calendar up one week at a time and i think it's back time we go back and i know one of the problems

127in going backward is going to be the teachers and the pay because right now they're paid at the end of august through the end of may okay well there's a way around that i've looked at it i marked up the calendar and i think i think we can go back a week for this next year's calendar for 22-23 we can go back a week don't start on the 10th but start on the 17th then on 23 we could then go back two weeks to the 30th so it's just two days before the new month of september and then so teachers would get paid then for september well that and then the year before because we went into june we would we would have in 22 ended june 9th then they could switch the pay to

128that instead so they're not going to be going a whole two three months without pay so there's a way around it and i want to see our bargaining team and others work on this because to me it makes sense let's think about our climate here let's think about saving money let's think about you know saving energy now it's not water which we have which is a big problem here in southern california and we need to conserve and i've done all kinds of things to conserve my water by you know the special irrigation things and low flow toilets and lofo shower heads so let's be climate aware like you know ecological and let's do something about our calendar i don't think it makes sense that's my personal opinion and that and i wanted to bring it

129up and so here's our opportunity to find out what the other others feel about about it and i think it's time we start talking about it and doing what we can i would like to say to you we can't hug anymore but i support and agree with you a thousand percent everything you said is valid thank you all right so let me ask a practical question i see that we have two board members who are looking at maybe not supporting the calendar logistically where we are at brad where are we at in terms of negotiation and going back and having a conversation or is this something that you would recommend go through with it and then maybe tours come back with a recommendation later on after discussing because this is a bargaining item well um

130so yeah so the calendar so the the district and the bargaining team did engage in negotiations um on these calendars and came to a tentative agreement which is why they've come forward to the board um i would defer to the board in terms of whether or not the board wanted to take action on the calendars or or you know make direction to provide additional information or what have you i know that many of the factors that miss piercy uh mentioned um you know that the district did did consider she mentioned some of those things um you know there's a lot of factors to to consider including the fact that we're also currently aligned with several of our feeder school districts there are some instructional impacts as well and and obviously you know some of the

131some of the areas that miss piercy brought up are valid as well so but but this was this was what we negotiated this was this was the recommendation and i would i would defer to the board so here's my concern with that right because i think when we actually give direction a few years back to have this conversation we also had an agreement to ask our feeder school district to align with us if i'm not mistaken yes yes so so several of them do do exactly and then for us to actually make this drastic change by not voting on it right now and then not bringing them into the table to have that discussion well i think will put us at a uh put us at odd with the other district so what i would

132at least i know that we might not get the two votes but at my urging is maybe we vote this in and then have knowing that there is deferring uh and i mean those are valid concerns that conspiracy brings right to at least to have that in your mind when you go back to negotiations for the next calendars and then have that as a pointer to discuss even with our feeder districts so that giving them a heads up that this might be coming down the fight and that we make sure that we're prepared for it so i'll open it up for thank you can i say one more thing which i failed to bring up i've already spoken let's say with cypress elementary they are all in favor of going back they only went to

133this calendar because of their families who had kids in both cypress elementary and anaheim union so they did that they lined up so that the you know parents were not having two different start times because at one time i had a parent who had a kid in lexington and in the cypress elementary and at cypress college and they are all three had different vacations so when that family wanted to take a family vacation they had to take some kid out of you know because especially like um spring vacation they had to take some kid out of school in order to go take a family vacation so right now what i mean though is what i should have just stopped with is cypress elementary is in favor of going back they would like to bring their

134calendar back they only did it because we did it all right good to know and maybe you could take that into consideration mr uh jackson some of the other considerations that we discussed way back when is by changing the way we are not to now the semester starts ends at the break of winter break so when the student goes on their break they don't have to worry about any finals coming up in january you don't have the learning loss that the students lose during those two weeks and then this teacher has to in their classroom has to re-teach to bring the student back up to where they were before they walked out the door for their winter break so there is time lost in the classroom this it is the teacher doesn't have to worry

135about the finals it's already behind them they have a better um winter break because they don't they're going to start afresh when it comes after this fact we recommended the change to all the districts right and and they moved along with us at our desire and i i think you know going back now because of whatever the reason is you know i kind of question our leadership in that respect well um okay um and also looking at the temperatures yes august and september are hot that means august and uh yeah and september are hot but they've always been hot and i'm looking at a uh 10-year temperature average for anaheim august is 89 september is 88 that's a 10-year average a 30-year average august is 89 the same over a 30-year period and september is

13687 so it's getting one degree in september over 30 years and it hasn't gained any in august so it's always been hot right my kids my kids played football they were out there sweating and and putting on their jerseys and helmets and and working you know themselves to a lot of sweat you know it wasn't any problem with them okay so but can i also add this uh you talk about the learning loss okay well let's get the other side what about the kids who you know need more time to finish you know something but the end of the semester is there christmas is coming up and if they had let's say two weeks to finish up something until the middle of january when the semester would end they would have time over those two

137weeks if they needed it to finish up and make up things before the end of the semester so there's two ways to look at that in other words because i'm thinking about those students that drag their feet and drag their feet and and you know this is okay so i understand there is some learning loss and maybe not but then that brings up another thing about coming back in the new semester but i won't go there but anyway there's many different ways to look at it okay but i just firmly believe that we don't need to be going to school in august okay because it is one of the hotter months okay we added a hot month for a cool month because june is not hot june has a much milder climate all right and

138if you you know you could i don't know where your calendar thing do you have the numbers would you finish are you finished what so do you have the numbers for june sure were you were you finished bro uh 10 years uh june is 82 30 year june is 81. in june yeah there you go july is 87. yeah you have 87 10 year this is anaheim average you have june gloom but then it you know goes to 80 85 in in the afternoon uh are you finished yeah so uh i anticipated that you what you had brought up and and i went back and i checked um uh and i found a five-year uh differential in in in the um in the averages so in june 15th on 2021 it was 96 degrees september

1397 2020 it was 105. uh in october 21st 2019 it was 98. these are the the hottest days in anaheim when i looked it up uh july 6 on 2018 it was 113. october 21st 2017 it was a hundred so um you know that just kind of spoke to me it and and someone who works in the elementary school district you know it it could vary at any month but as a parent of an oxford student anna that break is so greatly needed those kids before we changed they were trying to do term papers projects and and you know trying to drive somewhere you know to grandma's house and trying to do reader for a report to finish over your winter break we were getting complaints i remember we were getting um we were getting

140requests to change that teachers came i remember students came another thing that another reason i remember we changed it is because we have students who want to go to college in the summer time and i remember that if we if we were graduating in june they were missing that that deadline to go into that summer session and so you know those were the reasons i i really remember it was especially that having that winter break time for our students who were under so much pressure to try to get stuff done and then that uh having that advantage to get into that college in the summer time and those were those are the the reasons that i recall uh voting for the calendar okay but haven't the colleges change their starting times too so that they

141you know in other words they have gone later than what they used to be i i didn't look that up starting the college year yeah i'm not i'm not familiar with that but okay so having said that you know it looks like there is and i i support uh approving the calendar as is to all for all the reasons that mr o'neill and ms randall trevor mentioned although i see the validity i think part of it is looking at the data that you presented with energy consumption maybe that is something that we could take a look at uh from our department side to see what else can we do to save right and also to use i know we have prop right we have we have a whole lot of solar panels going in exactly

142so we got solar coming in so all that will come into frozen to help us out with those numbers coming down i know it's not going to be tomorrow but at least we're we have we have a pathway and we are thinking forward thinking in terms of those type of issues so having said that i'll call for about um i had one other thing that just came to my brain because when we start i mean when we start stop earlier we're able to have summer school in june and and just the beginning part of july for our students so that they're not going in the middle of you know the july it still happens who works in the summer time you know i've been enjoying that for the last couple of years well that's i

143understand that but you can also have you know july and august if you don't start in august so in other words you're just pushing it you know one one way or the other so it's still the same number of break months we you know we're not changing the number of break in the months but okay i've i put my opinion out there and that of the elementary school and and the other thing i'm gonna say okay i believe in education but i also believe we put every advantage to those going to college and not necessarily to those who want to just get a high school and then maybe a technical education afterwards so like i said earlier i am so glad we have more cte classes for kids that don't want to go to a

144four-year college everything we have done in the last several decades has been push push push to go to college thank god this district started opening their minds and their eyes to the fact that we need more than just four-year colleges we started doing more cte we have opportunities for our students now that they don't have to go to a four-year college they can go to a community college they can get out of high school and go to work we've had success stories already of students who have left this district and gone into a job right away making a decent salary and that's what i want to see more of we got away from our shop classes our automotive classes we've got one or two of them left they're not as prevalent as they were before

145but we're putting other things in biotechnology biomedical absolutely etc so anyway uh i i appreciate it i don't i mean i would agree but you know we'll see there's five of us so we'll take a boat and go from there we'll take a vote i mean always bring it up again absolutely um all in favor any opposed no no we have three two motion passes thank you all right 10 uh 10 15 initial contract proposal to auhd to ask me and that's a public hearing i open public hearing any questions or any uh public template 15 is not public information oh i'm sorry initial contract proposal that's right auhsd asked me thank you and now you threw me off for a second there um uh 10 15 initial contract proposal that's the information now we

151being given an opportunity to be mentored and then to turn around and and mentor other students in the district and this just speaks to volumes of of who we are as a district and uh it's just really wonderful to see in spite of um you know uh we're we're just over we're just toppling over uh of the opportunities with that we're giving our kids and in in spite of the challenges that we're facing and it's just amazing that um the students are coming up with innovative ideas because they've been given this leadership um uh uh opportunity uh and uh some of the things that they were coming up with you know um you know guitar lessons and you know draw you draw i mean just the the the volume of ideas that our students came

152up with with their mentees and uh i i'm just i'm so enamored uh you know anna you're talking about the opportunities that this district is giving our students you know something you would think is as small as just being able to make a connection with the student is so important so vital for our kids and i commend um uh scott if you're still here uh you know and everyone on the team um patty and mj they work so hard to bring these opportunities to bring these people in to collaborate with our students and it was just an honor as a trustee as as a community member in in this district to see the wonderful opportunities that our students are giving and for them to give back in the spirit of you know our servathon and

153i just want to say i'm so excited that our kids are are going to participate again in the servathon again it just speaks to the you know what we hold as a priority in this district and character and showing our kids that the world is huge but we can make a difference and they can make a difference so thank you michael and cabinet and everyone who who just you work so hard and and happy new year it's a we're off to a kind of a grim start because of all of the things going on but there are so many wonderful absolutely wonderful things going on and i want to thank everyone in the district for stepping up and pulling not only their weight but carrying others during this really tough transitional time so a heartfelt

154thank you to everyone thank you mr alter miss piercy okay um this month i've had the opportunity to do a few things of course since the last meeting we had christmas vacation and all i hope everyone had a nice holiday and a healthy one hopefully i attended the opening of schools task force meeting on online as well as the student discipline committee meeting and i wish i had brought my notes from those meetings to report but i didn't so i'll make it very brief then the other night i attended the csba budget briefing um on the the governor's new budget and in that uh seminar or zoom meeting they brought up some of the changes that newsom has made as far as substitutes trying to help the substitute situation and i have a request because

155they made the announcement that they were going to expand the number of days a substitute could work from 60 to 120 and that and something else a couple of different things about subs and i would like to know when the laws changed because when i retired from teaching in 05 i went straight over into september right june of 05 and in september of 05 i started subbing and there was no limitation for me not to have to wait six months so i want to know when that law came in if you guys could find out i'd appreciate it and also i know there had there was always a an earnings cap but i remember at that time a gentleman that i worked with retired a couple years before me and i talked to him about

156it and he said there's no way i can make that much money even if i subbed every single day so the cap was there but not this six months of waiting before you could do that and that's hurting us right now because we had all these teachers who did retire or whatever who you know could or administrators could come back if they didn't have to wait the six months so hopefully he's working on that yes yes trustee piercy yes so that in 2013 there was a pepper rule that went to play so the post retirement it got changed in 2013. so after that you know people that retire you they have to sit out and stuff like that so 2013 the pepper that's when it all these kind of started happening at that time okay

157thank you you're welcome because i was curious i didn't know it had to happen after 05 i know that or oh six i thought okay and then this morning i attended the career and life skills lecture series that is being put on by cypress high school they um the college and career access team set this up and they're going to have monthly lecture series at cypress high and this first the first one today was nick paglioccini who is a kfi a.m uh announcer broadcaster he does traffic weather whatever you know he's been with them a number of years and so he came in and answered a number of questions for the students and it was great and though i have to tell you something he said when they they asked him this question about you

158know at school what did you find was one of your most um relevant courses and you know what he said freshman focus when he was in cyprus high school he had to take freshman focus that's where they learned how to read a bank statement how to write a check if they you know of course those are ancient now but i mean he's been out of school for 20 some years um and credit and things like that he said basic life things is what he learned and he said that was that was the most valuable one of the most one of the most valuable classes he took and he remembered that so anyway he was very good he answered a number of questions and then that they had you know he um come up with for

159the speaker and then it was opened up to the audience and so being a late start day they started the lecture series at eight o'clock and so a lot of the zero period classes came in so and then any other students that wanted to come were you know were free to come in so it was uh it was the first one and he did a great job he really did he got the kids really involved and then of course there were a number of teachers who were still there uh that he had been they had been his teacher so they were talking and whatever so it was really nice and so then they did an exit survey and i haven't had a chance to read the exit survey yet but they were asking the students

160different questions about the validity of him coming in and how much they like this idea and thanks to mike uh matsuda our superintendent we're going to have neil sedota next month and he will be doing the speaker series so if any of you would like to come in it was very interesting i really enjoyed and it was really neat that this guy was a graduate of cypress high school so they started off the series with somebody who graduated so they're going to try to do them all and i thought that was really good i mean a great idea and and i think the students really got a lot out of it it's an opportunity to let them hear about occupations that are not the standard ones in other words that they know about because there's

161a lot of different things and he said you know he did he didn't have a degree or anything when he started out he just started out at the bottom rung and then he felt at one point he had to go back and get some more education so he did but it was very well done so and that's the basis of what i did this month so all right thank you mr happy new year everyone thank you miss piercy mr smith thank you well i uh the insurance committee was canceled and i did listen in on the discipline committee and lastly i'd like to refer to the young man that spoke here this evening because there was a comment made to me that the analogy that i used or example i used at the last board

162meeting that everybody has a story that nobody has the same story and um i've given this some thought when we were given the numbers of the votes by the students at the school that they did not want to change the name or the mascot and that was the reason that i felt that it should stay but the thought i've given to this and i asked this young man if he was going to stay he's not here and i gave him my phone number but what can this group of people do to get their story out and i am thinking that if they could get some a good-sized group of people together and formulate a committee and develop a an exhibit that could be displayed at the museum on the indigenous population i think that would

163be a wonderful way for people to understand and appreciate your history a lot of people don't know my story and my story i didn't tell in complete story i have always been heartfelt with indigenous and indian groups and when i was in college at the university of nevada in reno we were going through rush and i was at the sc sae house and as a 20 year old i asked the question why do you not have indians native indians in this fraternity and this fellow said to me because they can't drink and that stuck with me it was very very ugly to hear and i have seen over the years how our government has treated these groups i know of doctors that have volunteered their time to go and stay in these communities and work

164in the pediatric groups in medicine and all i can say is that these behaviors continue on generation after generation after generation and i haven't seen much good and my memory is that when it became time for the californians to vote on casinos islanders i asked why how is this all going to be and they said well it was to raise money for the indian communities to help them and support them and all i can say is where the hey has that money gone because i don't see it helping i'm sure it's like every other time every other generation the money goes to a small group of people so if you folks get a group together and discuss it i'd be more than willing to participate and just be a listener because i think the museo

165is a wonderful place to start here in our community to share your story so we could take our kids to this museum and see it firsthand but it's because you're putting it together you're making it happen your stories will be out there and i just say god love you for all of you people and so i hope it's a better year it's been a rough we're in our third year now it's been rough and difficult and so i just wish you all loved and i hope one day we can all hug again and i just want to tell you that i feel very fortunate to have been on this board these years not everybody is great but i can tell you that most everybody in this room i love and i cherish and it makes

166me sad manuel is going to be retiring i'm sad already and he's not even retired and that's the joy and the ups and downs of being in a job like that but i'm so blessed and i just want to thank all of you for the people you are for abdullah you're a wonderful young man you speak so well i'm so proud of you as listening to you tonight and i thought i'm going to be hearing more wonderful things about you in the future so thank you and thank you mike thank you miss smith um i'll just go ahead and report we we had an rop board meeting i know that uh trustee randall terry hortender with me and i also wanted to mention uh mr garcia from anaheim high school was actually featured or not

167featured he was actually participating in the rose parade and i wanted to see if we could get a clip maybe john and put it out there on social media just to highlight him because i think it was the band directors of uh either cal i think ben directors of california who actually went through his band yeah and he was uh he was pretty tall enough that he got highlighted in the picture so so i wanted to make sure that he gets highlighted too uh in the biotech uh video i know maritza is here but i just want mike to really emphasize the fact that you know we've got all these great programs let's engage our parents to make sure that we are talking about this in the community i know anaheim high school made the

168presentation during their parents parent meeting or coffee with the principal they usually do so i'm sure that it's going to come back again but let's make sure that we utilize it to engage our parents and i think that's a great idea to present it to our feeder district anaheim elementary as well so that they know that we have some great programs so let's make sure that that's front and center sure absolutely i'll take the lead on talking to the board president perfect well you know it would be a good thing for sixth graders to see a video of that because they you know are of a couple of different options so that they have the options of maybe different schools because of what's out there so absolutely all right perfect and then um i did

169attend the aim program uh it was very uh nice to see some of our students actually talk about their experience so again these are great things that we need to invite our parents to have conversations about um and i also passed by our on sunday morning passed by anaheim high school to see some great work from our staff members actually passing out our test kits so that we could get our test kits out so i want to thank all our staff who are doing some valuable work uh helping our students other than that i don't have anything uh we will go to next to the advanced planning advance planning we have future board meetings our next next board of trustee meetings on february 3rd at 6 pm and 14.2 any suggested agenda items thank you

170i do um so when we attended this last um aec school board convention our students were highlighted there and there was one student in particular at one of the general sessions who really had to fight to even get uh on their uh student trustee as as a trustee uh on their on their uh on the diocese on the the board and and really spoke about how you know across the you know their area that they really wanted to uh to highlight the students have capacity and capabilities of making you know making decisions and being part of the committees and while our district does highlight and we have you here it's a part you're a part of us and while we have them sitting on committees i just got to thinking that if if there's a

171little bit a little bit more um allowing our student trustee to to vote on certain things so my ask is if we could look into maybe uh seeing if there's a policy out there okay if uh you know what the policy is and if um our trustee could could actually vote on maybe like resolutions that we present there are certain limitations but they can do more yeah i mean you know can't can they can't uh you know personnel issues and things like that but um i just would so we'll bring that up idea if if we could look into that i will second that and uh maybe call we could take a look at bring that agenda item something else i think that's a great idea now what student were you thinking of which was

172it one of the general sessions or remember the student that was speaking it was actually a student panel there's a panel on the general session and remember he he had to fight and and is that the one from san diego yes he was a character awesome i had a question about that too because the way he spoke he was elected to the board i and i didn't understand how he met elected so we there are there are uh provisions like for example north orange county uh community college board right i was a student trustee and i had to get elected by the student body of cyprus to represent students uh at the board of trustees right so that's a election process which is already prescribed with the asb but i don't think we have that

173here we don't have which is obviously ours we call them ambassadors right so they are called student reps and i think that's another provision if you want to we could take a look at but i think that we should probably help for us i mean i i you know i'm i'm not i like our system because we give the kids the opportunity to apply for ambassador or and or board so that's i don't think they're you know we need to change that but i was just curious how that happened i mean i know the college is do it differently but i this was high school yeah so it was it was he was character he was really something he was all right okay all right we don't have anything else as agenda suggested agenda items

174uh well motion to mr o'neill is in a hurry to go move to go adjourn a second and i have a second all in favor hi hi all right well happy new year folks
