001a lot of you have spent many hours many nights late uh over time weekends i saw teachers on facebook creating their their little virtual classrooms uh and uh i know how much work that is i know i'm learning uh i'm learning to how to how to uh get inside the classrooms and and teach too and so i know it's very difficult it's no it's new but i just want to remind everyone there's always that silver lining there's always that hope when you have visionary leaders when you have strong leaders that say let's go let's just do the work we can do it and we plow through it so thank you i honor all of you and i am so grateful to serve and i know on behalf of the board we are so proud of

003jackie counts director innovative programs and cambridge virtual academy okay is jackie here not here okay she's hard away hard at work leading cambridge virtual academy right now we'll have to get here to uh congratulate her and let her uh speak on be on be on her behalf but we are so happy to have made that uh made that a choice we're so proud of her all right uh introduction of guests we're going to skip that we're going to move on to our reports of the associations and i'm not sure who's here so i'm just going to call on association and please always introduce yourself so i'm going to call on asta this is grant shuster i'm the president of the anaheim secondary teachers association and i do have a brief report today uh i'd like
004to start off good afternoon trustees cabinet and community my report today is all about dedication to our community as we started school this week our community of teachers and staff encountered obstacle after obstacle and found ways around to push through i would like to give a shout out to all the teachers and staff at every site who found a way to connect with their students and community under already trying circumstances from the pandemic that were exacerbated by technical issues special regards go out to eric greenwood and his team for tireless work and hours that they took to enable teachers counselors administration and staff to welcome their students to a new school year i cannot imagine the pressure and stress he was under and they came through big time this support of community did not start
005this week but has been prevalent all summer well over a hundred teachers have worked continuously with district partners on the opening of schools task force e-learning racial and social justice issues special education contract bargaining and creating mousse to support our teachers as they create innovative ways to help our students grow and bring back some stability to our students lives and to our neighborhood communities asta members continue to help with food distribution at a variety of events and milk deliveries in some of the hardest hit areas of our community teachers have helped students find their voice during this time and encourage them to use it for the change they believe in as well i have never been prouder to be a teacher in this district than now as we see each other stand up and support
006our students and families however we can during this crisis as we move forward we must continue to do so as a community recognizing the needs of our students parents and all district employees we must be mindful that as much as we see teachers and others in public education as superheroes they are only human and as much magic as they create in their classrooms they cannot create more time in the day we are very close to finishing up our last mousse and i implore the district and board to settle these with the mindset that any further hours required to train during the school day or more paperwork to be filled out during the school day will take away equal amounts of time that we want to spend with our students supporting them and their success i
007would also like to refer to the letters last month from students calling for ethnic studies in our district this is also something we must address as a community along with each of us looking at ourselves as individuals and deciding what we can do to support our students of color as they learn about our history and their own histories we must look at what our responsibilities are as teachers counselors administrators and board members to address the institutional racism that exists in structures in the structures of our district and our associations to close i want to thank the district for all of the collaborative opportunities over the summer our work together has created the best system possible under the circumstances the training teachers received has translated into a district distance learning system second to none with innovation
008and creativity that will benefit all of our students and would not have been possible without all of our work together this concludes my report thank you mr schuster fantastic thank you is ask me here uh how about apga buck is here all right i just want a second and third and fourth everything grant had to say and it's i think it's really important to understand that counselors were working remotely and they were able to schedule students from home working at home to get those students into classes so a big shout out to counselors for getting that done because teachers wouldn't be able to teach if those students weren't in their classes in the right classes i have a couple other important announcements one would be that also during the pandemic our district has a 91
009and a half percent graduation rate and i think the efforts of teachers but more importantly well not more importantly but it's time to recognize those counselors that did a fantastic job all those senior counselors and also the teachers to get that graduation rate stephanie henry and all the work that's been done remotely from home to make sure that we can get those students correctly tagged and graduated and make the calpads world a happy place um i do have one final uh important message and that is we have a new president-elect and that is uh sylvia nopa and i think she is here at the meeting so sylvia if you want to jump in hi i'm sylvia nopa i look just like buck i guess i got my signals crossed with sylvia so um let me
010text her and uh see because she has the invite to the meeting but if we could go to someone to another group yeah no okay thanks we'll let her on great job uh buck thank you so much uh how about uh uh axa hilda are you on uh csea okay i think what we can do is i'll check back with you uh after our uh our ptsa it looks like sylvia has joined us oh there we go all right we stalled enough so sylvia this is buck i just introduced you so if you'd like to say a few words about uh who you are and what what your role is hello everyone thank you for your time today my name is sylvia o nopa i have been in the um district since 2006 as a
011counselor i started off at ball junior high school i worked with dr fred there for a couple of years before moving on to cypress high school and then catella high school and the sycamore junior high school and now this year i am at magnolia high school so i am very excited to be taking on this co-president role with my counselors welcome sylvia thank you so much that was that was kind of mean i need to put you on the spot like that you did a great job and uh we're so we're so happy and proud of the work that the counselors do so thank you and thank them for us too at your meetings we appreciate we appreciate you thank you very much that means a lot thank you okay uh just one more call
012out for uh afscme or csea or um axa how about pta did you call them i will just giving one more shout out okay uh moving on to our uh parent teacher association president are you on all right moving on to our public comments good afternoon everybody we do have a few public comments this afternoon uh the first is coming from martha aguirre she is a resident of the district and she has some comments about counseling at the board meeting on june 18 2020 the meeting depicted a chart the budget plans for the district which showed how counseling staff was to be reduced along with other positions though i acknowledge that funding for public education has been dwindling over the years that budget plans must be made to invest the available revenue into the district
013school as effectively as possible i'm very concerned about the harmful ramifications this particular budget plan will have on students and families according to the american school counselor association in 2015 the recommended student to school counselor ratio should be 250 to 1. using the school accountability report cards for all the district schools auhsd has an average student-to-council ratio of 585 to 1 for junior highs which is approximately 2.3 times the recommended ratio and an average ratio of 400 541 to 1 for high schools which is 0.2 times higher than recommended although oxford gilbert polaris and hope were excluded from the average due to their unique structure and student population it is evident that the schools are not equitably supported as schools with larger student populations or who have populations with complex needs do not seem to
014have extra support school counselors are already overburdened with higher caseloads than is reasonable to be able to support students especially students with more complex needs as such producing staff does not seem to have students best interests at heart how does the district intend to support both students counselors teachers and staff has reduced funding when the research shows that cutting certain positions due to budget cuts will do more harm than good how are the district and board fulfilling its mission statement with understaffed counseling offices throughout the schools what can be done long term permanently to support our counselors and students the next comment comes from on ha a resident of anaheim regarding the black lives matter task force good evening board of trustees i would like to thank you for your supportive words at the previous
015board meeting regarding ethnic studies and appreciate the district's efforts in structuring the black lives matter task force i'm aware that the district is overwhelmed with the start of the school year and distance learning but i hope our concerns will be prioritized as the school year progresses i'd like to raise concerns that are related to the black lives matter task force to be taking taken into consideration in future discussions during a meeting with oxford's principal many students and alumni voiced their experiences with racism and other reports of discrimination where their complaints to the district were essentially dismissed were barely investigated cases involving racial profiling public humiliation and bullying by teachers and students received little prioritization which has been harmful to students learning environments in many ways according to section f of the california education code section
016201 it is quote quote it is the intent of the legislature that each public school undertake educational activities to counter discriminatory incidents on school grounds and within constitutional bounds to minimize and eliminate a hostile environment on school grounds that impairs the access of pupils to equal education opportunity we ask that the board look into ways to assure that complaints and reports are handled adequately under proper leadership as well as explore how inabilities to act in cases of racism and discrimination in the past have affected student mental health safety and performance furthermore students have expressed high interest and commitment in actively being a part of the black lives matter task force in achieving an ethnic studies program that caters to the needs and identities of all students at auhsb we look forward to hearing from the
017board on these matters the next comment comes from casey lang regarding the black lives matter task force as a teacher in the district i applaud your courage to do what others wouldn't when we acknowledge and empower those who have been marginalized then we become allies to social justice and civil rights today it is not enough to silently say i'm not a racist and so it's not my issue today we must actively be anti-racist and this is an anti-racist step i thank you and i know several students i work with thank you as well the next comment is from lizette vargos gracian a resident of anaheim regarding the black lives matter task force i am extremely proud that auhsd is leading the way on equity the courage necessary to take this step cannot go without notice
018as a parent and teacher of minority children i know this will send a message of solidarity and compassion auhsd continues to lead in civic engagement critical thinking and life skills the lessons that our students will learn from the black lives matter task force will foster inclusivity anti-racist attitudes and instill civic responsibility the right thing is not always popular but positive change is always worth the struggle thank you the next comment comes from omrin power also a district resident regarding the black lives matter task force in the oxford academy student meeting with the new principal amber houston several students shared their experiences of the following racial profiling discrimination teachers being controlling and creating a hostile environment for students these cases were handled inappropriately and in an untimely manner showing that creating a safe environment for students
019was not the first priority this inadequate handling of these cases create a hostile environment for students who want to report but are afraid for safety of their grades relationships with teachers and scrutiny from other students etc this is not just an oxford academy problem but an auhsd problem i am glad that now these students experiences were heard but how will the school district change to make sure that students are the number one priority it's also great that there is a black lives matter task force but are there any updates as to how that is going the public has not been provided any information on the activities and goals of the black lives matter task force the next comment comes from jamie co uh k-o-u-g-h uh regarding the black lives matter task force i am an
020art teacher for north orange county regional occupational program with auhsd i received notice that the district was starting a black lives matter task force later invited to participate it was a quick yes the invitation came at the perfect time our family was torn this summer with responsibility to the military my husband is a colonel in the us army and to the black lives matter movement our two college-aged children have been active in black lives matter marches these past few months have proven that those these two sides stand on opposite sides of the street on the same day my daughter called me with rubber bullets flying at her feet my husband called and said he was back up to sacramento to send you to l.a the day prior my husband and i marched in orange the
021tear between people and the judgment of what things look like has been once again brought into our attention i am so proud to stand alongside a group of people that support change we have the opportunity as artists teachers leaders parents and children to educate and open eyes beyond what they see and invite them to see through knowing not blind judgment we can exist in one house with different ways of getting to an end as long as our foundation is strong and built from trust respect and learning thank you aohsd for being brave and leading the way and it looks like there may be one more and then there's one more public comment that just came through from emily it was a resident of the district in the last few years i have faced harassment and
022discrimination from other students within the aohsd district a few instances for example myself and other women were subjected to vile explicit stories that were spread amongst a group of boys personally for me i had a story that was written and posted on social media to my horror was not taken down after several requests not only that i am sure western high school is aware of a student who has sexually harassed girls from his school and other schools he texted me one day saying that he had my personal messages and images calling me a naughty girl and saying that he would take a peek into my life once in a while it wasn't until i confronted him did he stop my question is what is the district doing to teach students like this to throw around
023racial slurs and derogative comments i am a student at oxford academy and yet i still see those same students in my classes who have not taken responsibility for their actions saying it was only a joke or calling those who have reported them snowflakes where is the district now that concludes public comment thank you so um we're not uh supposed to remark on public comments as a general rule but i really want to thank um i really appreciate when someone takes the time especially now when you have to actually sit down and write something out they're very thoughtful and heartfelt comments and i just want you to know that the board is listening to you and i especially want to thank our students for taking the time to reach out to us we appreciate it and
024as you have uh spoken out that that we have connected you with uh adults who are listening to you as well so thank you and without further ado uh as one of our um our comments was uh not hearing about the black lives matter task force it is on our agenda today and uh it's our first presentation and so uh dr shawna egans i believe is going to present yeah um before i uh thank you uh madam chair this is uh mr matsuda michael matsuda the superintendent i do want to um take a a moment to uh put this in context for the district um i want to first of all um i mean as the public comments expressed is that these are very difficult conversations um to have and um there's a lot of
025feelings uh on all sides of these issues but we do know on may 25th the whole country witnessed an horror the killing of george floyd in front of all of us and that did trigger a lot of these emotions and even in our own district shortly thereafter there were large-scale protests throughout the district involving thousands of our young people and many of our staff as well involved in peaceful protests um across the district of course orange county and across the nation i am very proud that our young people protested 99.9 of them peacefully and i'm also very proud that as diverse as this district is a lot of young people were reaching out and with empathy to our african-american students staff and families in their message that they supported the black lives matter movement shortly
026thereafter uh the district started to receive emails and letters very heartfelt from our very own employees about years and years of neglect and microaggressions and sometimes outright discrimination from other staff members other even administrators teachers and i felt compelled to reach out and and really listen to our employees and that was a very emotional meeting tearful and very difficult for me as someone who represents the district to hear but as you know one of the things i'm really proud of in this district is that i think we really do practice that physique compassion and love and kindness and i know i speak for a board when it's this is not just going to be a one time event i think our board is very serious about addressing these issues with our staff with our students
027and their families and it's not going to be these are not going to be easy conversations going ahead moving ahead but as long as we address it with kindness and compassion and caring i think we can get through this together and in our own ways contribute to a better america together and it all begins in our very own community so with that i'm very proud to introduce our co-chairs teacher carlo davis at catella high school and our administrator dr shawna egans the director of our safe schools so um really proud to be working with you too and i uh you have the floor now thank you so much good evening everyone thank you for your kind words my name is carlo davis i am a mathematics teacher at catella high school i am also the
028boys basketball coach there i also share the honor of being the co-chair of the black lives matter task force with dr shawna eagles on behalf of our other six cabinet members and our 125 uh diverse task members i would like to personally thank each and every one of you for giving us this opportunity president ann marie trejo we thank you clerk catherine smith we thank you assistant clerk anna piercy we thank you member al jabar we thank you member brian o'neill we thank you in addition we would also like to thank superintendent mike matsuda and his executive cabinet shannon hi good afternoon everyone i have to tell you i i am deeply honored and before we start um the one thing that comes to mind that's important is that when you know your why you
029know your way and and that resonates with us what is the why when we hear the opposition when we hear that the district should just stand mute and why are we um making this uh and supporting this uh the why the why was clearly expressed in the black lives matter resolution it it helped define our purpose define why we're doing this and who we are and mr masuda the way you provide it by doing what other districts wouldn't do which is create a task force so that you can hear conversations that aren't easy to hear especially in our district where we pride ourselves on our diversity on the five c's on equity and we spend a lot of time uh in professional development and closing those gaps and bringing the awareness to everyone our staff
030our students in our community to allow a task force and give a voice to continue to go down that path you've given us the way so with that we as a unit as a task force had come together and the number one thing is what's the purpose and what's the vision statement we're very grateful that we have a visioning process that we tried to replicate on a smaller scale that allowed for input that allowed for expression and that was based on the words of our board and the resolution so i would like to read to you um our black lives matter task force vision statement it reads the black lives matter task force is united and committed to the ideals assertions and values declared in the auhsd black lives matter resolution approved on june 18
0312020 our task force will provide policy recommendations for increasing equity and access for african-american students and staff in auhsd our mission is to advocate for culturally responsive instruction for students improve engagement with families and promote social and racial justice for all stakeholders in auhsde and please let me say that one more time our mission is to advocate for culturally responsive instruction for students improve engagement with families and promote social and racial justice for all stakeholders in the anaheim union high school district and i hope that now that the board has given us the why and mr masuda has given us the way that the vision statement that we have come has resonated with the purpose that alliance and that will support everything that we value in this district moving forward thank you shana just reiterate
032when china says all stakeholders our task force realized that our district has been very intentional to include all stakeholders this has shown throughout the five seas the five c's ensure that all stakeholders all of our stakeholders have the same opportunity with that said those five c's are displayed from the east side of our district to the west side of our district we have um john bautista and jeff newmanville who helped engineer catella talks on the east side on the west side we have jack gupta who has an excellent stem program at kennedy high school so from the east to the west and all points in between those five c's are prevalent our task force has a theme that's quickly grown we realize in order to implement all of these five cds they go hand in
033hand with courage it takes courage to implement those five seats that courage is what we commend all of you on for having the courage to do what other districts around us didn't have the courage to do speaking about courage we created a short video that hopefully will be shared with you soon to show the world how we feel about you for displaying that courage that is needed the goal of our task force is to make sure that a group that has been somewhat overlooked gets to have that safe space to display their courage we've created those space those safe spaces recently for our lgbtq community we created those safe spaces for our our special ed students our special students who have that one-on-one aid and they have to walk into that classroom with their head
034high knowing that everybody can see right away that they're different it's now time for our district to create that safe space for our african-american kids and our staff and our community our task force believes the way to start creating that safe space is to implement the bsus just like we did the other groups from the east side of the district to the west side of our district and all the places in between like our vision statement says we strive to embetter every stakeholder those bsus will not be exclusive they will be inclusive they will be a place to promote awareness empower our students empower our staff and give them the courage in the stage to display that courage shannon thank you we we know that tonight there are some bsu clubs on the agenda so
035we're excited to see that we have a number of schools that already have current active so we we definitely just appreciate that um and i one thing just to point out carlo has done an amazing job connecting our current bsus with our pledge partners like uc irvine um cal state fullerton right their bsus our surrounding district um school bsus so we are really excited for that work uh to move forward um the task force itself uh carl has mentioned you know over a 125 educators both classified and certificated we have come together we've done a needs assessment to really decide okay what what are the needs what are the needs that we feel um we want to focus on i will tell you one of the top two were culturally relevant curriculum including ethnic studies
036and implicit bias we are extremely proud to be partnering with asta as they themselves are extremely passionate about this topic as well looking at professional development for our staff um looking at orange county human relations and what they can bring they're already on our campuses they're already a partner and looking at similar groups that we can partner with to help build that awareness we have an extremely diverse task force and i can tell you from our meeting that the energy is high and we have it is important to know that we have a community of employees that are ready they are ready to respond they are ready to uh bring that voice uh so uh we're really proud to be able to say that and i tell you the foundation is key we talk about
037ethnic studies we talk about that curriculum that is so important to build for our staff and students the foundation for us and everything we've done we want to make sure that everyone has an awareness that the civic engagement and that foundation has led to the comfort level and the excitement uh about moving forward that is um is key to know that we are taking the right steps we're not just jumping over but we're laying a strong foundation um to close in our update um we definitely want to be able to give regular updates as things are moving um and i want to share uh a quote from a very uh prominent female uh leader who has been in the news lately and she says our unity is our strength and diversity is our power and
038that is what we have in anaheim union high school district and i want you as our board to know that your courage has not gone unnoticed and that you have a community that is getting behind you and uh oftentimes the naysayers have the loudest voice but i will tell you being in that task force and seeing all those faces and hearing all that passion um you have a community in this district that is behind you 100 and we are going to make things happen and move things forward for the betterment of our staff our students and our parents so with that we just want to thank you for this opportunity and we look forward for more future updates wow thank you so much you too uh board did you have any questions or comments we'll
039just start from the left to the right as if we're on the dais so brian are you there mr o'neil it looks like you may be on mute oh there he goes so i was on the phone okay while you're working that out i'll let uh i'll i'll call on al so just take your time okay al yeah i i i was going to comment on the fact that we had um many bsus on our agenda to be approved today i was wondering if that was a coincidence or if this just occurred right after we went into uh our uh uh putting our uh task force together carlo can speak to them we currently have [Music] 10 bsus in place including the ones that are going to be approved today we also have advisors in
040place on every campus it's it's been a bit difficult getting things in order due to the covet situation but we we are working tirelessly to get those bsus in place we've also started creating a space for our potential bsu's advisors to to share information articles activities upcoming events so we are we are moving in the right direction when we anticipate within the next few months we will have all our bsus in place on every campus and i i would like to add to that as well that um they're very bothers carlo and dr freda are very humble they have worked very uh closely together to um help guide the process and and streamline it uh so that the bsus could be district-wide so i want to make sure that they both uh hear me say
041i know that they have worked tirelessly and and have really made the process streamlined for our sites uh so yes that has been as a result of this movement thank you and uh carlo yeah you referred to the video uh it came right before board meeting i had an opportunity to see it and i shared it on social media fantastic video i'm very proud of our team at uhsc staff for actually doing it and also very proud of the fact that you know mike right after as a superintendent got on meeting with our employees i know i've had some conversations with some of our staff offline some of our students offline uh of concerns and i know that as a district uh we're very transparent and i know that we will resolve any issues that
042come up but at the same time i wanted to thank all of you for doing what you're doing so thank you very much thank you thank you mr jabbar are you okay mr o'neill you ready oh okay we'll have to figure that out since we got to get you to vote anna go ahead okay technical difficulties thank you shauna and carlo for all the work you've done it's amazing what you have been able to accomplish in two months time it's super you know like all these you know bsus i mean like al was saying you know i saw them coming forward and i'm going wow great but now you've got already 10 in place that's phenomenal and i am amazed at the number of people that have joined the task force 125 wow that's super
043so you guys are doing a great job keep it up and i know it's a lot of work but thank you very much both of you thank you thank you miss piercy miss smith well gratitude to all of you and i would like to say that um how this is going to be affected and how we will be able to create the change that we want to see i would remind everyone regardless of age that no one has ever lived in someone else's shoes and we years ago posted the golden rule in all of our classrooms and they are now being replaced with new ones and i hope they'll stay up as a constant reminder to each and every one of us you treat others the way you would want to be treated and i
044wish the task force the best i would love to just observe if that would be possible to attend and listen and hear but most of all beyond listening we have to hear so once again shauna and mr davis thank you thank you brian go ahead and if i can get another opportunity yay all right there you go can you hear me now yes we can okay i don't back in technical just like maybe spectrum um i just want to thank shauna and carl for uh you being the leaders of the group 125 strong that is fantastic i'm so proud to be in a district that is is uh doing things that need to be done doing the right things for the future and i'm really looking forward to hearing uh as you progress what you're
045proposing for the district and how we can we can be leaders in not only locally but maybe nationally in in showing uh others what should be done and how to do it so thank you wow no churro words should be spoken i think that's fantastic way to look at it uh nationally we are we are leaders uh out there and um as you said where uh other districts have been have been struggling with this subject um i think that um we we uh we really just decided this is the way to go and um you know but we we we we're taking credit for the work that you're doing that's what board members do but we're so proud of you we we understand um it's not been very easy to have these conversations um it's
046taken a while um for it to become a little light-hearted uh as you spoke about you know at the last meeting i imagine the couple first couple meetings that were were a little bit difficult um but i love the enthusiasm i love that you have 125 strong that just speaks volumes of the commitment people are are making and taking on top of you know everything else that we're dealing with um that's truly amazing uh thank you to for stepping up and leading the group on top of everything else that you're dealing with um and uh i i have high hopes for all of the uh the comments that to come uh be they easy or hard uh we we will hear you as uh trustee smith said it's it's it's about us um listening and
047uh hearing what you say and us trying to disseminate it in in any way possible i love the two subjects that you're talking about um implicit bias we all have it uh you know there's just no way to get around it and it's time that we look at it it's not comfortable but it's time that we look at it and study it and do better because we can and i like the fact that you're talking about culturally uh culturally how it how did you phrase that china culturally culturally responsive curriculum very good culturally culturally responsive curriculum uh to embed it uh within all of our subject areas i think that that's another thing that we can possibly do um and i and you hear the letters that we're getting from our students they really are
048um they're they're wanting that so thank you for bringing that up too it just so aligns with all the things that we're doing thank you also for um uh talking about how everything that we're doing aligns with what we needed to do and what we're needing to do now uh when you're talking about civic engagement it's it's like we had the foundation laid out um and perfect timing for this to happen uh the bones as you can say the foundation of of the five c's and the um and and the civic engagement now uh teachers have the tools to use these um and use these as as tools to further have these um hard discussions and as i said before um it's okay to talk about this it's okay to say the word black it's
049okay to say brown it's okay to talk about things that we haven't been talking about before so thank you too i look forward to um the more many more presentations and what comes of all of the work that you do and we're so grateful to you thank you all right moving on 9.2 our aim summer internship virtual internship program and i believe uh dr freed thank you madam president and members of the board and as you know we have many programs in our district that we are terribly excited about uh and aim our anaheim innovative mentoring experience program is one of those amazing programs and despite the fact that we had a pandemic and we have this shift everything to uh virtual experience i'm really proud of the great work our aim team did to
050really transition to this virtual world and tonight we have an assistant principal sean heifer who's one of our aim leads uh who's going to also be speaking with several students tonight to showcase the great work they did this summer and i think uh mj cook who will also be on the call will be kind of giving a wrap up at the end so mr pfeiffer i'm going to turn it over to you looking forward to hearing your presentation outstanding thank you dr fred uh madam president board members uh cabinet and guests aim students welcome so happy to be here i'm nervous i'm getting ready to present my screen it's kind of like bringing the wedding cake to the venue there's so many things that could go wrong but let's try it um entire screen here
051we go share you should see all your face pretty quickly listen i i'm gonna uh i'm gonna introduce uh our student presenters and give them the voice to this my job i was the aim i was asking task with the uh um uh the the salvage almost of this thanks to the vision of the cabinet and and our superintendent bringing the same experience to our students the anaheim innovative mentoring experience this hands-on gritty part i was part of the summer part this used to it was larger but of course with the pandemic we had to adapt and it changed the uh online or it changed the on hands-on experience into an online virtual experience and we discovered a lot our approach was you aim interns have a unique observational point you get to see where
052the work world the real world comes and merges with the education world and i ask them let's look at learning best definitional learning i shared with them was learning is a relatively permanent change in behavior based on experience and let's ask the so what now what what do we do and i'm going to tell you in this unique observational point our students rose to the occasion they became partners with our gear up teachers at the europe virtual university that occurred over the summer they weren't just teacher assistants they were co-teachers facilitators they'll explain that right we i'm reminded of stephen johnson who wrote a book a while ago everything bad for you is good how pop culture makes us smarter he talks about leaning into our learning and when you see these students present tonight
053i i challenge you to not be moved i'm telling you these students uh show and illustrate as a collective voice of our anaheim union high school students that we are nimble we are creative we are courageous as mr davis talks about and we're the right people at the right time so with no further ado i'm going to turn this over to vikram chatterjee by the way vikram i saw you practice in your speech because you're a little thumbnail but you're muted but i saw you practice brother so we're ready to go um bikram chatterjee is going to introduce our program and move us into our slideshow go ahead vikram thank you board president miss feijo board members cabinet and distinguished guests my name is richard pattergy a senior at oxford academy i'm extremely grateful to
054say that i was one of the aim gear up interns that participated in the virtual internship this past year with the opposite of the coven 19 pandemic we saw the immediate effects on education as a whole in order to prioritize our public health but thanks to the auhsd leadership team students were able to receive a unique experience that not only emphasized public health procedures mentorship and communication and career networking all together we did it despite the difficult circumstances and adversity by working simultaneously with our aim partners as well as gear up classes students who are innovative in their approach to implementing the five c's in every project in the curriculum we hope through this presentation and reflection you gain a deeper insight into the different applications of our critical thinking communication collaboration creativity and most
055importantly our compassion now the first aim partnership that i want to talk about is okapika the orange county asian and pacific islander community alliance okapica aims to support underserved populations in orange county through fundraising education and advocacy about socioeconomic well-being as well as health systems that pertain to these populations in the three-week internship that aim provided us not only did we get to work in this experience with okapika the network that was provided with us allowed us to continue interning with ocapica much longer even after the aim experience ended specifically i was able to continue working with their mental health and curriculum projects for their allied health academy and even received a paid position in phone banking for the chinese american voter community hi everyone my name is emily nguyen and i am a senior
056from cypress high school i worked alongside vikram as well as two other aim interns with ocapico and as aim interns we worked alongside college students and facilitated mental health workshops that touched upon various subjects such as work and life balance taking effective breaks and confronting burnout on top of this we also determine and delegated curriculum for the allied health academy's 2020 to 2021 academic year other than that on top of the tests and duties that we were that we completed we also were provided resources for life beyond adolescence such resources included meetings in which we learned about finances budgeting dorming and living situations in college and also had the opportunity to meet with the uc berkeley admissions administrator who helped us and gave us advice on how to complete our application and personal insight questions
057ultimately we are rewarded with a holistic and insightful experience through this entirety of our internship i as well as many other high school aim interns furthered our partnership with ocapico for the remainder of the summer and some including myself or even provided the opportunity to be an intern for ocapicas allied health academy's 2020 to 2021 academic year and next up i would like to introduce madeline kim from oxford academy hello my name is madeline kim and i am a senior at oxford academy i had the pleasure of being partnered with senator chang where interns were assigned to write daily research papers and news clips on the current news within the city state and country as an aim intern for senator chang we were given the opportunity to gain a deep a deeper insight of what
058it was like to be in the council office as well as taking civic action and learning more about our community we were able to implement the five c's where we specifically focus on communicating and having discussions about current news that was currently taking place within society next up we have tran lee where he will present his experience of working with the office of supervisor chappie all right go ahead and try again tran all right hello everybody my name is kenny lee and i'm from oxford academy i worked with higher ground youth and family services it's a non-profit located in anaheim dedicated to mentoring at youth risk in anaheim now the two soft skill 5cs that i developed were collaboration and communication so i was personally tasked since this was of course online with scheduling all
059of the google meetings this built my communication skills because of the fact that i had to constantly check in with the other interns and check in with my aim mentor now us interns were tasked with creating a reopening plan from scratch for this business because higher ground is a after school program so just like oxford academy or the district we had to create a reopening plan emphasizing a budget for additional materials that they might need safety protocols and communication protocols which required constant collaboration between us to ensure that we were all on the same page now this was the first internship i have ever experienced so working with mrs densmart the ceo gave me valuable insight and especially showed me how the skills from high school can and will translate into a workplace environment next
060we have caitlyn newton from magnolia high school hello everyone my name is caitlin and i interned with another student karma sweden from catala high school to work with oak court over the summer a non-profit organization that stands for orange county communities organized for responsible development here we focus on bringing workers families and the community together to advocate organize for jobs healthy neighborhoods and an inclusive democracy prior to this experience i wasn't aware of how many issues there were within my community and how to take initiative in educating myself or solving these problems however with my mentor my nun i was able to have important discussions about systematic oppression gentrification and redlining promoting anti-eviction notices for families during the pandemic and learning how to promote a coven 19 mandatory face mass policy in orange county through
061this i signed petitions emailed called and campaigned on social media to reach out to a younger audience to spread awareness this partnership enabled me to become a leader as i was in charge of conducting my own research and discussions with reinforcement from my mentor for extra support thanks to aim for giving me these wonderful connections i now have the confidence to start my own new project to reach out to the lgbtq community and the youth during this pandemic i would now like to introduce johnny from cypress high school good afternoon my name is johnny nguyen and over the summer i was fortunate enough to work with joshua mahar samantha uikab and alexa clemente under our aim mentor gina daiquiri with the organization named thrively thrively is an organization that allows students to find what they're
062good at so they can unlock their latent skills and potential in other words they take assessments to demonstrate to students on how they can approach a certain career path based off of their own strengths rather than skills that they may develop somewhere else as an intern i was assigned to create a lesson plan on a subject that i was interested in even though i am stem oriented i decided to make a lesson in regards to analyzing because i felt that the website already had plenty of useful stump programs for students to learn through this experience i learned that learning as a whole isn't as one-dimensional and linear as it may seem if i take a break and not focus on my career path i can still develop skills such as teaching and analyzing other people
063this allowed me to better understand how a workplace environment worked and really boosted my confidence next we have jocelyn from kennedy high school hello everyone my name is jocelyn torres barbossa and i am a senior at kennedy high school i was partnered up with elimination institute and i worked alongside joanna walters with our aim mentor brian thanh elimination institute is a non-profit organization that focuses on building mindfulness tactics with students of all ages they create mindfulness curriculums for teachers to embed into their classrooms to help students whenever they may need it as an aim intern i was able to incorporate the five c's into my daily tasks creativity was the most important c i had to focus on creating questions for a survey to see where students were at of this time of uncertainty and
064what problems have arisen since social distancing back in march an example of this would be asking us how have students been coping with the quarantine um and some what are some other thoughts on their current events of protests and the activism that is occurring in the community around them critical thinking was essential we had to make sure students felt secure filling out this survey so we had to make sure it was an anonymized survey once the survey was done we asked ourselves what can we do with this information what was the next step for this organization communication is what helped me continue build this project over the summer i continued the internship to help develop an app specifically for this reason compassion and collaboration are the most ones that helped me throughout my journey with
065both of these skills we were able to develop an app that would be a friendly gadget for the district to use as a way to continue what they will teach in their classrooms and for other students to use as help throughout the day my overall experience with aim program has been one of the most unique and different experiences i've had with summer i was able to see more of behind the scenes program of a company that works towards the mental health of students of all ages developed a lot more experience and integrated different skills i was able to multitask strengthen my leadership skills and further obtain skills that i have not been able to before i truly am thankful to have worked with a number of other students from other schools including oxford magnolia cyprus
066catella and others as well now i will introduce brianna castaneda from laura high school hello my name is brianna castaneda i'm an upcoming senior at lawra high school as well as an a mentor of the ymca program in orange county my team for this program was also coordinated with karma who is an upcoming senior at catella high school as well as miss aeon who is the ceo of the ymca ymca is a worldwide organization that focuses on students mental health academics and sports my assigned task for this program is by using the 5cs such as communication by setting up new conferences with karma and miss aeon on new assignments and projects throughout the week critical thinking by brainstorming new ideas with lesson templates that provide students to learn by using arts and crafts creativity the
067importance for not only students to learn but to also keep them engaged and entertained throughout december in conclusion this had been an excellent experience for both my self-identity and realization it was a unique way for me to take a step back and to look at things from a bigger picture that we are more liked and different i appreciate that mr piper also taught us the importance of learning that despite your age background nationality language learning can be applied to anyone and that we are learning every single day based on the choices and the experiences we make in life lastly i was able to realize the importance of attitude and effort you give are the results that you will achieve thank you and now i'm going to introduce the next slide that provides information about what
068we have learned throughout the pandemic that's given by madeleine kim who attends at oxford academy hello aim was also given the opportunity to work with virtual gear up university where my specific instructors were miss mann and mr gaudette at europe university students created a psa about cova 19 on when it was the right time to go back to school and if so what preventive measures would be taken students researched every day on the statistics of the coronavirus as well as other pandemics that occurred in the past for each of the projects assigned we went into breakout rooms and they were able to implement the 5cs even through an online environment where they had to communicate and collaborate with their peers in order to examine issues from multiple viewpoints as well as using their creativity on
069what they wanted to present for each of their projects hi my name is ivan ayala and i am from magnolia high school not only was i able to have a wonderful aim experience with my main aim mentor mr bautista me and vikram were able to experience the gear up university with mr wilmeth and mrs gonzalez of the from kazala high school we were able to mentor our peers and help them through the classroom able and we were able to guide them to the five c's while creating multiple projects and allowed them to look at covet 19 through national through the community and how it affects them personally it was a great way to it was a great way to gain new friendships and gain new experiences and we were also able to distract ourselves and
070then tamik that was happening overall that was a great experience next i'd like to reintroduce johnny newman from cypress for my gear up experience i worked with uh mr solarzano and mrs juenyas along with the three other interns i worked with at thrivingly their class was youth entrepreneurs and as a mentor i was there to facilitate breakout rooms and lead discussions your main project was to create a shark tank pitch for a business idea that would prosper during a pandemic granted i can provide the students with ideas to speed up the process but i learned that as a mentor and as a teacher i should take a step back and allow for others to generate their own thoughts in order for them to learn they must be willing to learn and for self-discovery we must
071allow others to think up their own ideas and their own opinions that's how self-growth starts and next we have kenny lee from oxford academy with his gear up experience hello my europe class was called what could be a journey of self-discovery with mr gonzalez mr johnson and mrs johnson from anaheim high school along with other great and wonderful aim interns now we had many different covert 19 themed projects and small group activities aimed at building the collaboration skills of the students in an online world however my favorite part were the meditation sessions at the end of each of our classes by mr gonzalez this culminated into a final documentary for the students overviewing how they felt and what they saw during the course of the pandemic now facilitating fellow students and working with fellow teachers
072immensely developed my leadership skills however most importantly to me it showed me how difficult teaching really is man is your mic working all right let's move on to emily hi everyone my name is emily and my gear up partner uh dope mr forever go back okay thank you uh my garrett partners were mrs lang miss brief and mr manning and the central idea that our class revolved around was how krobin 19 and current events such as black lives matter have changed our perspective on the social climate students focused on analyzing different pieces of literature and creating their own reflective writing pieces to connect the literature content that they were learning with their perceptions of the social climate as a mentor i personally took on the role of chat liaison in which i monitored the chat
073box each meeting to answer any questions that the students had and provided links in which the students would use to mark their attendance and participate in class activities all in all both students and teachers engaged in the five c's in each of the activities that we facilitated and in conclusion uh after reviewing the student video reflections and sharing our own experiences we have collectively culminated a few words that we think accurately capture the experiences of both students and teachers such words include interesting dedication teamwork critical thinking community collaboration educational networking compassion and rewarding and with that being said i would like to thank you all for your attention and introduce miss mj cook the aim the a program director thank you very much uh let's see here i'm really excited to join you guys tonight
074and i really want to thank mr pfeiffer and all of our gear up summer interns uh thank you for your dedication and commitment to the gear up kobit 19 project and to your aim internship provider on behalf of the aim program team and all of auhsd we are very proud of you and the impact you've made in your own lives but also within your community madam president the board cabinet and all of our guests here tonight the aim gear up summer project is the first of many exciting virtual opportunities for our auhsd students it's an honor for me to be able to share with you that with a virtual start to our school year the aim program and its multi-tiered structure will continue to provide our students with opportunities to engage in work based learning
075experiences but via virtual landscape these experiences will align with the practices and protocols of ames business partners and provide our students with opportunities to experience telework develop newly emerging skills for remote workforce success and ultimately experience firsthand shifts that are occurring in the workforce we believe that it's aim's ability to be nimble and adjust quickly to changes happening in real time in our communities and in the workforce that has led to some very exciting opportunities for our auhsd students in this new school year we're really excited to share that launching this fall is the aim distance learning project where we'll have over 500 auhsd student interns serving as aim distance learning tutors for our students we are also excited to launch a partnership with the latino health access organization we're going to be having 12
076of our student interns working on a covid19 project focus on awareness and education in the community to help stop the spread of covid19 this is an addition to the dedication and commitment of our current aim business partners who are dedicated to providing our students um with the experiences that they had previously experienced in a traditional uh in-person uh experience but through that virtual landscape they're completely dedicated to ensuring there's no disruption to their partnership and their commitment to ensuring that our students experience success for college career within their communities and ultimately in their lives we're really proud of the work that our students do we're really proud of the commitment of our business partners and of the support of our community and ultimately we want to thank you for your continual support and making this
077program possible amazing amazing amazing thank you all thank you all and um miss tren uh i'm gonna personally ask that you come back and you give your presentation to us okay when you can at the next meeting okay we really want to hear uh your presentation okay we will make that happen for you okay board do you have any questions or comments i know you do mr o'neill no question it's just a wonderful presentation uh hearing all that we are doing in the aim project and with uh sean and mj as being leaders there mentors of all the students uh i did i guess i have one question i didn't catch how many students were involved this summer in the project so originally we had planned to expand to over 150 if it was in
078person uh so mr o'neill this was as soon as the pandemic happened that this is where you guys moved on it um you know it could have disappeared but immediately uh we looked at your aim uh leaders they looked at gear up as a housing agent i guess to call it and immediately and gear up said yes and so our students our student interns that we'd already selected and vetted i think over 150 uh had to be then whittled down who's still interested out of the 150 we had 30 uh students that were interested and continuing even if it was virtual even not knowing what it was we ended up connecting them to gear up university teachers and the gear of virtual university over the summer where they did amazing work with those teachers in
079their projects and expanded their leadership however in the meantime it was uh uh we had reached out mj myself uh skye rendell we had reached out to the partners and found out that they were interested still that they didn't know what the landscape looked like but they were interested in bringing young people in our aims students our anaheim union high school students and say let's work together i need them i use them as uh interns virtual interns i use them as research schools i'll use them to help guide me through this process and that gets that vantage point that i was talking about in my opening they got to see the union between the real world the work world and the educational world because they saw both sides scrambling to do their missions and our
080students rose to the occasion in china i'm so proud that's great thank you sean mr jabbar yeah you know what can i say you guys all excelled and i'm glad that you got an opportunity i know that you'll probably have a unique story to say when you uh go out there and interview for jobs because you could always say that i interned during a pandemic right so uh the experience that you got with that is awesome and tran lee i am so sad that you couldn't present that because you actually worked for my boss in our office for doug chafee and i i wish i could have heard you say what you said but i heard what you guys did from my end my staff member actually appraised of how valuable of a team players
081you guys were during that time so thank you very much and good luck to all of you guys and thank you to the staff for stepping up and thinking out of the box to make sure that we bring this partnership and keep the program going thank you mr jabbar miss piercy well first of all kudos to the advisors that for getting this going and get you know finding those 30 kids and the 30 of you that decided to go with it anyway fantastic you guys did great i am amazed at what we are able to do when we put our minds to it and and you have shown us i think it's phenomenal i think the aim program is outstanding and i think you are lucky to have you know been selected and and even
082luckier that you decided to go with it even if it was virtual uh we're all learning a lot and you did great and your presentations were really great and i feel for you tran too because you kept trying but technology sometimes knocks us out of the game you know you can never tell so anyway you guys did a great job i am sure that you learned tons and you helped and perhaps you'll have an opportunity to continue on in the fall so very good thank you miss piercy miss smith well i can't say how much i appreciated everything that you all participated in and we talked about the five c's and i was just thinking about the five p's prideful pleasing powerful positive plentiful and you have touched all of those and best wishes to
083you thank you keep on going thank you miss smith wow mj and sean another fantastic year and in the middle of a pandemic i i'm just i'm over the moon that we were able to uh connect with a partner i think of gear up now i don't think of them as a separate entity i always feel like gear up is auhsd's right arm left arm uh they're just always with us and i'm so grateful that they stepped up to make sure that this happened but the two the work that you two did to connect those partners i know mj's like the queen of connecting and getting all those partners but it sounds like they love our kids so much that they didn't have to their arms didn't have to be twisted to to to do
084this and so that just speaks volumes of um all the work that you've been doing with the program um thank you and thank the teachers thank the partners um for uh for for doing this where there is a will there is a way and as i spoke earlier uh at the beginning you know uh sometimes adversity just um shows us what we can do you know things get in our way and and we just we just uh we build we walk over it we we climb uh if we we can't walk we crawl it's just amazing students i am overjoyed with your presentations you have gained knowledge uh far beyond i think a college um culture at this point in time things that no one has ever had to do before as my colleague expressed
085not just a story to say but you overcame obstacles that you didn't even know you were going to have so this is your college resume story it really is and um you know it's it's not i think i think as this year goes on this is just going to be something that you just do because you sound all so resilient uh and uh full of purpose and you just make all of us uh proud i know you made sean and mj and all of your mentors proud uh and you showed courage beyond uh anything that anyone has ever put in front of you and you're all you're only seniors now so it's just amazing amazing and the world is in such good shape because you decided to take that step and and do this program
086and and look what you've done so thank you so much thank you for this presentation you all and uh we look forward to hearing from you guys in the future all right and especially you miss lee we will hear from you uh we'll have al's um uh maybe uh maybe your mentee or uh can can get a mentor can get with you and do a quick presentation at our next board meeting thank you all so much fantastic all right moving on is it okay if we excuse our student interns uh they have a full day of synchronous learning absolutely thank you bye bravo [Applause] thank you thank you to the board and the president thank you okay 9.3 we've got more school dismissal and distance learning dr jaron free yes thank you very very much
087and i'm going to share my screen with you so bear with me a second while i set this up for all of you i'm doing that um this will be a presentation that i will be doing in partnership with i want to make sure you see it first then i can can you guys see my screen here we go okay can you see it yet yes i'm not going to see you anymore so i just want to make sure okay yeah enlarge it so we can yep there we go there we go yeah you yeah all right perfect so this presentation tonight is our tradition has become our traditional uh presentation every every board meeting i will be doing this in partnership tonight with dr root and carlos hernandez uh we will begin this presentation
088uh we talked a little bit about the learning loss of mitigation funds some one-time monies that we have received to support learning loss or learning gaps with our students that resulted from the spring so dr root will talk a little bit about the money and the resources that we received i will then talk about the authentic process we're going through to solicit input that we have done but then also the process we're going to be doing to continue to solicit input from all of our stakeholders and then finally in some examples of how we're already spending that money to support learning loss and then finally our colleague mr carlos hernandez will give an update in terms of how we are working closely with our community and our community partners to fight and beat covid so
089that's what our presentation will look like tonight uh like before because it's on youtube and because it's been recorded i respectfully ask if you could hold your questions until the very end and then we'll be happy to answer any questions that you do have so having said that i'm going to go ahead and turn it over to dr roo good evening board of trustee superintendents cabinet as well as our community on youtube to start when the pandemic hit we were in a time where we were receiving um budget cuts that were unprecedented in fact when we talked about the budget back in june we were given a zero percent cola which was a shock to education and knowing the work we had to do based on that there was a lot of community out or
090stating that schools needed more funding to be able to not only come back to school but as we do come back to school to be able to create the supports needed to one move forward but to also look backwards and remediate the learning loss that may have occurred for many of our students during this challenging time that we have all been going through so fortunately we started out and originally there were two pots of money that we received the first was sv117 money from the state of california and then the second one was um our esther money which was an elementary and secondary emergency relief funds and that came to us in march just recently as as recent as about the third week in july we also received um great information that we received a
091rather large sum of money which is being referred to as our learning loss mitigation fund within that learning loss mitigation fund there are three sub categories the first is our governor's emergency relief fund the second is our coronavirus relief fund and the third is estate funding which is our general fund or prop 98. so the first funding our sb 117 funding with the initial money we received per pupil and we received approximately 501 000 this funding comes with no expend by date although of course we want to use it timely so that we're servicing our students originally this money was utilized for our initial purchases of hot spots some technology as well as cleaning supplies the funding mandates that you can specifically use it for maintaining nutrition services cleaning and disinfecting facilities personal protective equipment
092and materials necessary to provide students with opportunities for distance learning our next fund is called the esser act funding and this was about 6.9 million dollars this has a time frame that we can go backwards we can spend from march 13th 2020 all the way through to september 30th 2022 and this is a very broad discussion we can use it fairly pretty much for anything that we can determine supports coronavirus response activity our third set of funding is our learn is the beginning of our learning loss funds the first um apportionment of money is the governor's emergency education relief and this is a smaller fund of 1.7 million dollars this funding also can be backdated back to march 13th although we just found out about this and the amount at the end of july and
093so we can go back to march 13th and we can use this money going forward to september 30th 2022. we're gonna see for all three allocations of the learning mitigation money there are four general principles for which you can use it student learning lots general measures that support extended instructional time for students academic support for students and providing integrated services that support teaching and learning and this could be technology this can be mental health professional development and our student nutrition um one thing to be very careful of is because most of this is federal money it does come with more significant audit um limitations and most funds and so we are making sure that we are looking at every expenditure we place under this we're double checking it with our auditor to make sure that
094we are doing it correctly and accurately so that as we expend the money we've expended it correctly and then our next pot of money is our corona virus relief funding so this is you you've never once heard me come in to a board meeting and say gosh we have too much money um but this right now is um it's a kind of an overwhelming amount of money it's 26.5 million dollars and granted i guarantee we can spend that money on great things for our students but the issue is the timeline that comes with it so we can go back to march but we can only go through from to december 30th of and so what this means is we have to have expended the money fully meaning it's important it's in process being used by
095students or already being having been um used if it's a person's services by this december 30 date um i can tell you that we have been reaching out to every advocacy group that we work with to try and get them to extend that timeline the fact that we just found out about it the third week of july whereas yes we can go back to some of the things we did but we know that we have the capacity within our district to do amazing things for children and we'd like to extend that timeline out so that we can use those funds very intentionally at looking at what losses our students have had and being able to mitigate them i know dr freda will be sharing with you a little bit about some of the things that
096we've already come up with through engagement with our stakeholders already and then our third part of learning loss funny is our general fund prop 98 money so this is state funding and this is about 2.8 million this again has that very short timeline um and again the same four factors you can spend the money on so if you look at the next slide it will tell you the total um so for those of you that were writing it down to try and add it up when we were done i did that for you so you can see the five uses the amount the allocations we've received and the date of expended by so in total we will have received 38.4 million dollars in funding to support this time that we're going through um although you
097may read that allocations were made and the learning lost money some was allocated on special ed population numbers some was allocated on our number of supplemental concentration grant funding and some was funded on general ada the money all does go into one pot and can be used for all students um but we have some timelines of course we're going to be highly strategic we're going to use the money that needs to be expended by 2021 then go into the money for 2022 and then that final open extended money so that we maximize our revenue and how we're going to expend it for our students now i'm going to turn it over to dr freda to tell you a little bit about the new lcap yeah so you'll notice uh thank you doctor you'll notice the
098lcap learning continuity and attendance plan not to be confused with the local control accountability plan so as you know in the spring because of the covet 19 and the pandemic uh the l we weren't required to do the l cap in the spring like we normally have done that will take place and resume this spring but this this l cap the learning continuity and attendance plan as a requirement of sb will take place in the fall this must be completed and adopted by the board of trustees by september 30th i'm going to talk in a moment about the process we intend to go through to really do some authentic stakeholder engagement to solicit additional input in terms of how we might spend this money and how we might hold ourselves accountable that what we're spending
099our money on is having our desired impact and outcome some of the areas that will be included in this learning continuity and attendance plan will include in-person instructional offerings distance learning pupil loss mental health and social emotional well-being pupil engagement and outreach and student nutrition it's important to note that we have as a result of the pandemic in march we were way ahead of colleagues throughout the county and i would argue the state where we began the opening of school task force where we began actually developing and doing this very much this very same work in the spring and into the summer so again well ahead of our colleagues but we've been working with input to develop a distance learning plan to develop a hybrid model if we're given permission to return back to school
100even part-time or full-time so a lot of the work that we did in the spring has paid off because it will be embedded into this plan now again part of any lcap whether it's the one we're doing in the spring or the this learning continuity and attendance plan it accounts for how we're spending the money again and that is reaching our desired outcomes so these three learning loss mitigation funding allocations are contingent upon the adoption of the lcap that you'll be approving at the september uh 24th which i'll talk about in a moment so again we have an authentic stakeholder engagement process that we're going to go through and i'll talk a little bit about what we've already done but we have scheduled a stakeholder engagement meetings on august 20th august 27th and september 3rd
101you can see because as dr root said there's such a short timeline in terms of when we can spend this money on that we have to also go quickly with the stakeholder engagement process um so we will do this virtually but we will solicit input and be real transparent with our community stakeholders uh in the meaningful way that we've always been able to do this work to collect that input to then uh use that input to determine how we're gonna be spending the money to support our students now as you know in our last board meeting we already had done a parent and a staff survey so we're using that initial data that we have been given and i'll share as a reminder what we found from those surveys in a moment but we're using
102that initial data to guide some of our initial expenses in terms of software platforms mental health support services uh and professional learning that we're putting in place in addition to technology and the purchase of new equipments and hotspots that i'll talk about um after the stakeholder process takes place through the month of august and early september we will then do a presentation to the board on september 17th very similar to what we've done in the spring uh mr malone manuel colon our chief academic officer and mr carmona one of our directors will lead this presentation so you can see in greater depth the process we've gone through what is actually in our plan and how we're gonna be measuring uh the success of those different actions to show that it's gonna help close the learning
103gaps that our students may have suffered as a result of the pandemic and then of course following that presentation we will have a special board meeting on the 24th where you can take action to approve and adopt the learning continuity and attendance plan that we have developed in partnership with all of our stakeholders again i think it's really important to remind everyone that the process we have gone through with our opening of school task force which involves stakeholders from all groups parents staff teachers classified administrators even a couple board members participate in this process we're using that as initial data or input in terms of this process but then also mr colon has been meeting with a teacher group of over 30 teachers every tuesday we're using some of that information as well to inform
104some of these initial or early on purchases that we've been bringing to you as a board because of the the urgency and time sensitivity around these monies as a reminder we shared last war meeting the survey data that we had been given uh that we had done with our parents and our community in addition to our staff these are as a reminder the key takeaways that we got from that survey data as parents they had said and reported that technology access and support tutoring for their students and mental health supports were really their big three takeaways that they supported in the survey there of course are some other things but these were the biggest uh issues that they brought forward in the survey our staff similarly talked about technology access and support as it related
105not just our students but also for them as the instructors the ones connecting with our students they talked about the need for professional learning in terms of how we're going to support our teachers to adapt to this online platform but then also some of the technological software platforms we're purchasing some of that will also need to come with training so our staff is equipped with the skills on how to use those different platforms this also connects to the appropriate materials and platforms to engage our students and of course they also talked about mental health being a top priority in meeting both our needs as adults and of course the needs of our students in our families now some of the initial purchases of services and supports that we have done as a result of the
106of the input that we've been given so far we have spent a lot of money on computers and hot spots making sure that any student who needs these uh technological uh supports has them but we've also done the same for our staff we're gonna make sure we've equipped our staff with what they need to be able to connect and support our students we have also purchased different software platforms i'm just gonna go over just a few as an example again you're gonna get a much greater detail at the future board meeting uh where we go over all this in depth but we've purchased the online dbqs as you may recall in social science we have been a long-standing partner with the document-based question uh instructional program we are actually one of the pioneers in that
107program where if not all most of our social science teachers have been trained over the years how to do these dbqs we are now purchasing the software that allows us to transition and do this software integration online so that is something that we're going to that will support not just social science teachers but also potentially english teachers as well uh because obviously we care about all of our classes here's an example of something we're doing to support our vapa programs we're looking to purchase smart music which is a platform this is the leading browser-based music education platform that connects teachers and students whether in the classroom or remotely it facilitates focus practice assessment immediate feedback and making the link between educator and student even more powerful again this is for all of our instrumental and
108vocal music teachers who can use these are banned orchestra and choir uh teachers who can use this platform as an example as you know schoology has been our our main learning management system that we've been using so we obviously wanted to purchase the upgrade with schoology being that we are starting the year completely virtual and not knowing exactly how long we're going to be we want to make sure we equip our teachers with all the bells and whistles to support their efforts to better support our students and as the board knows at our last board meeting we approved the gizmos platform which allows our science classes to continue doing and offering labs virtually this is critically important because as you know we want to keep our science classes a through g accredited and part of
109the a3g accreditation requires our science classes to have a percentage of our instruction connected to labs this allows us to continue that process we are also looking to bring back at least through the first semester because again this money has to be not just used but the services provided by the first semester are ed tech coaches now because master schedules have been built it won't get necessarily a period of release but we're looking to go through a process where we hire edtech coaches and give them a stipend through their additional support that they provide through the first semester this support will really be given to our staff so they're equipped with the needs their needs for being met to support our students and of course an upgrade to the phone system that we currently have
110as you know part of our outreach plan is going to be to connect regularly with our families especially to those students who maybe aren't connecting or who are having trouble making those connections many staff worried about using their personal phone numbers they don't have district phones per se so this will allow those teachers and classified staff office level staff to make connections to family where it's still connected to our school lot uh lines uh using those numbers as opposed to their personal numbers some of the academic supports that we're going to be providing our students is the summer and fall professional learning i'm super proud to share that we've had over 1100 of our 1200 plus teachers trained before school even began we paid those teachers because it was during the summer and it was
111their time and because it's something that we we valued and wanted to make sure we prepped our teachers with before school starts uh was it tremendously popular and well um viewed training that we gave our teachers and as you heard i think grant say in his opening during the union report um that they are well positioned to provide top quality first best instruction to our students in a virtual format also because of what was happening throughout the summer not all students were able to take advantage of the summer program options or perhaps there were some challenges that happened when this first took place in the spring and march we are trying to boost up our fall credit recovery options so more of our students have a chance to recover some of the credit that was
112lost as a result of the pandemic we put down fall boot camps we're looking to also do remedial options for our students in the fall probably sometime closer to the thanksgiving even at the beginning of winter break where we can pay teachers to do recovery instructional recovery plans with our students so it's not waiting for a student to fail but we can actually do real-time grade recovery so the student doesn't fail we can we can help them while they're still in the class and be to be successful some of the things we're looking to do with our visual and performing arts program or we're looking to purchase art kits and additional instruments as you know in the pandemic we don't want our kids sharing instruments so we have used some of this money to really
113beef up our instrument and art kit procedure so all of our kids have what they need individually so they can still continue to perform in the bands or have what they need to perform in choral programs or our programs also and i know carlos will be talking about this in a bit we are spending some of that money to continue to connect and empower our parents we are building uh as you know we've had nationally recognized parent learning walks in parent leadership academies this will be virtual so we are transitioning what we've done in the classroom and physically on campus to now a virtual format so we can continue to support and empower our parents to not only support us with what we're trying to do but better support their students at home when they
114have questions where they have help they may need the parents can now interact with and of course you heard tutors was a big piece we're looking to hire over 150 tutors to support our students throughout this fall the way that works out is that each high school will get six tutors and our junior highs will get four they'll be used to support and i hate to use the word core because i think all of our classes are core but the traditional core the english math uh science and history that we use to support students in those platforms not just on the synchronous days mondays wednesdays and fridays but also on our asynchronous days where they can be working with students in small groups to continue to help support them with their learning and then lastly
115in terms of some of this examples of purchases and services that we're looking to do under the area of mental health we're looking to add 12 additional social workers through december and that's important to note that remember as dr root said it's not just having to spend the money by december but we have to use these products or services and purchases through december so we're looking to hire 12 additional social workers through december that can help with case management work more closely with foster youth became vento students also english learners and help our current social workers with case management and responding to crisis as you know right now the pandemic has made some some uh home life challenging for a lot of our students and our staff and we want to make sure that we
116have people in place that can really help treat the different things that they're going through additionally you heard how important our counselors are from doc and we couldn't agree more we're adding 12 additional counselors as well that's going to help our counselors so our our permanent counselors can do some additional work and working closely with our student groups as well while these these 12 counselors were hiring us on a temporary basis can backfill some of the day-to-day operations that our counselors would normally do so they our current counselors can be freed up to do some additional uh work with student groups uh in in closer contact this is gonna be really important because as you know if we hire a temporary counselor to do that work they'll form relationships but then in december when they
117leave that's now a relationship with a kid that goes away we want to use our current counselors who already have established especially through the grade level counseling the importance of making those connections with kids and families they already have established relationships with you know that mindfulness is a big part of what we're doing in our district already we want to expand the mindfulness professional learning that that goes with our staff our parents and then obviously trickling down to providing these opportunities for our kids this would be in the form of work that we've already done with illumination and mine kind and then additionally we want to add specific hours for our counselors um this would be after school or on the weekends for them to hold those at-risk meetings with students uh specifically english learners
118or foster youth who are particularly challenged given what's going on so they can continue to connect make sure they're on the right pathway and provide them the resources and give them access to the different resources they may need to help get them through this difficult time and then finally special education english learners um we've had already a very successful saturday language academy but we want to use some of this money to pay our teachers to do additional saturday language language academy offerings for our el students and then also we want to be able to expand our progress monitoring specifically of our english learners as you know in the world of special education case carriers serve as rock stars and supports for our students with disabilities but in the english learner world they don't necessarily have
119a case carrier so this will allow us to hire teachers to go above and beyond outside of the school day to do specific work with our english learners and help progress monitor with them and make sure they're getting what they need they have access to what they need access to and then they'll be there as a support group for these students to help them be successful during this time and then of course with special education as you already know our school psychologists are stretched already very thin we want to add additional psychologists during the time through december so that way we can use our current psychologist to increase the mental health supports of our students with disability in addition to the academic supports that our students are entitled to their designated services outlined in each
120student's iep and then along those lines we also are going to be adding some speech and language pathologists through december again to be able to increase and improve our services for students who are entitled to those services through their iep so as you can see a lot has already been done to support our students that we're putting in place but as i shared with you we really do value the the process and we do value value authentic stakeholder engagement so the process that manuel colon and joe carmona will lead is an added touch that i think we do above and beyond as a district because we want to hear again uh not just what we've heard before but now as we're going through this the needs may change and that input is going to be
121really important in terms of how we spend this money to best support our students and really close the learning gaps that occurred as a result of this pandemic i now want to turn it over to my colleague carlos hernandez i'm hoping that he's on i know he has some technical difficulties he's on yes i'm here carlos thank you thank you very much and good evening everyone trustee o'neal i think you jinxed me spec the spectrum on my side also uh you know just gave way so we're back on thank you very much all right we i wanted to go um in depth a little bit about um what we are doing to uh address the needs of our families our community to you know to beat covid and it's really this is a microcosm of
122what is happening in our um in our areas that we call hot spots there are zip codes that are seeing a spike or i've seen a spike for now weeks and and this is only one piece of the inequities that we have seen in certain zip codes and so we talked we were talking about racial inequities just a little bit ago we're talking about health and inequities here and of course the economic inequities that take place and so what we are doing is we are you know creating and designing that additional civic engagement you know up upstream flow from our students our and their families and their voices are being heard through the ability to educate uh to create systems around resources and then to respond to in this case covid so um training our
123families and building them up and our parents up is is is the beginning uh as they you know uh have uh misunderstood or understood or not not not uh become aware of what is um what are the guidelines that we should follow to be able to address the the covid you know staying you know um safe and healthy uh they are helping in their communities now with this additional training and summits that they that uci has provided and and latino health access which i'll get into in a little bit they are now being able to support their families and their neighborhoods our students have gone through uh trainings and and summits and they are now the leaders on campuses to help other students um become aware of what they should do in order again to
124be safe stay safe stay healthy and to move forward and and from surviving to thriving uh we are we are systemizing our resources so it's not only our district resources that dr freda is mentioning here we are also working with our faith-based organizations our non-profits uh the city of anaheim and others to be able to share resources across streams our you know our fellow district elementary districts are also helping to share the resources and to do a more intentional job of being um you know proficient in our resources and what's available uh you know it's not just the food distributions but it's also the tech distribution it's the material distribution and and we're now talking about care packages uh distributing to our most media families um the last piece is on this slide is responding
125to the kovid so we're to get into the testing piece but it's testing not only the testing but what do i do now as a as a person that is has tested positive well we now needed to work on the contact tracing so our our own parent leaders have become these promotoras they are parent leaders that are now hired through latino health access and and others of caprica is looking to do the same to be able to be the ones that um from the community can work with these uh families that are stressed and anxious and saying now what i i i have to stay home but you know i have to you know pay the the rent i have to pay for food and there are resources and there are funds available and and
126these are the you know the pieces that we need to make sure that our um families are aware of um to be able to again beat uh um uh our next slide is really a a very busy slide i apologize for that but i wanted to just give you a breath in terms of what is existing and what's happening and what has happened since uh you know beginning of july when we started to collaborate with orange county health care agency with latino health care access or latino health access with uc irvine uh with our our elementary school districts and then el capica and as you see uh anaheim union has been trailblazing saying yes and thank you board for saying yes to these opportunities to bring you know testing um you know to partner with
127our latino health access and our hearts getting health care agency to get testing to the sites um you know there's three testing sites that that are happening every week um again since july 15th tomorrow will be the 14th testing event that happens in anaheim union um they are happening at at magnolia on mondays catalan tuesdays and um anaheim on fridays and again this is happening we have had more than uh 2 000 close to 2 500 uh tests take place in those three sites and and they're still a huge need i know we're seeing sort of a dip in des in covid cases but there is still a significant need in our community and again i mentioned uci training i've mentioned um latino access training for our parents and our leaders and and our students
128and they again they are a an amazing organization that we are now continuing to grow our relationship the next slide just simply a big shout out to our pio um and that uh is because um you know when when we push out flyers we want to make sure that it's hitting the families that need to hear this information and this is just you know two examples and when we push our flyers uh twelve thousand people are reached or eleven thousand folks or reits and another flyer um so this is again uh the work that we have to do to be able to communicate effectively with our families a big shout out to our faces a big shout out to our school sites that are also doing this work as soon as we get the flyers
129they sent out in mass and uh you know our families that are in need hear it understand what resources are available and uh and and they are very appreciative um the next couple slides are really um to really go deeper with our parent leadership academy and our parent learning walks and again as dr freda mentioned an opportunity to move to the virtual platform because there is still a need to build you know bring our parents along uh as uh grant you know schuster described you know we've we've trained up our teachers we've trained upper administrators we're training up our students in terms of the virtual world and our parents are are are also being trained up to understand what is their role and how you know what what they do they need to know to
130understand um the virtual environment the challenges in that so in collaboration with cal state fullerton our our faces a focus group um facilitated along with araceli chavez this development of our virtual parent leadership academy these are our four modules we're going to go into family engagement in a virtual world and what that means we're going to look at supporting your student through the distance learning so what tools are they using what resources are they using we're going to look at technology and distance learning platforms again schoology aries you know the different platforms that are available that we're continuing to add to because you know our teachers are very creative and they've found some amazing tools and they want to use them so we want to make sure that our parents know what those tools are
131and then of course as uh again dr freda has mentioned mental health is critical the parent survey shows that that is a continual need and so with the help of dr dela cruz we created and designed this module four to be able to support the mental health uh you know needs of our parents and our current reality the next slide um shows and again this is happening very very quickly the development of our virtual parent learning walks with the the the support and the and the the support and training of our uh curriculum specialists and our our five c's are going to help us deliver the virtual parent learning walk so that we can um understand as parents how to support learning at home so when my student is sitting in a synchronous environment what
132kind of conversations can i have with them what kind of questions can i ask them so that we have a dialogue so that i know their experience and understand their experience in an asynchronous you know what kinds of questions should i be asking what kind of dialogue should i be having with my son or daughter in the asynchronous environment and so these uh you know experiences are are going to be a part of you know our parent experience very soon so that we can have them support learning at home and um i just want to bring it this presentation to a close and i and i again um we know that we have some visionary leaders working with us in our district we're working alongside is staff members classified certificated our superintendent uh as you
133know wrote an article in that source and you know he entitled that uh the obstacle is the way and so i just wanted to close by talking about this because as we mentioned the multiple challenges that we face as many of you have already talked about we are pushing through those obstacles and so i'm just going to quote the last piece of this article on it and as from superintendent matsuda and it says that kovid 19 is the obstacle but it is also the way forward now is not the time to have this disease push us back to the old ways let us instead move forward on the path together with courage and compassion that is the way and so it just speaks to the work that we are collectively doing together that this is
134we're not talking about surviving we are going to push back past survival and we're going to get into the thriving piece because our community deserves it our families our students our teachers and of course uh you know all of all of us and the work that we're doing together uh this uh the obstacle is the way so thank you for thank you for your time all right word president um that concludes our presentation i can keep this up just in case you have questions and you may want to see the money slides again but otherwise i will it hit escape so i can see all of you but i'll put this up for a moment in case you have some questions over to you thank you dr fred thank you uh jennifer thank you carlos
135it's just an amazing presentation uh so overwhelming the work that we do and we are heads and tails up above all of the other districts i i have to say um so i uh i'd like to open it up for the board for any questions um mr o'neill no questions just feel free to have the people in the district that we have doing what what they are doing to help with our student education thank you one and all thank you trustee jabar yep i have a few questions so just clarification and and wanting to make sure that you know uh folks who are watching also get this information and highlight it um i think i've had numerous conversations with a few of the cabinet including jiren and uh jennifer regarding internet access so i wanted
136to make sure that we are clarifying the fact that currently we're giving we have the ability to give uh a hot spot to a student who is in need because i believe our district right now we only get one per household but one of the things that i've been asked from the community is usually you know you have two or three students who are going to our district and for them internet connection in terms of the speed becomes an issue so my question i i want to clarify and i want to make sure that everybody gets the opportunity to answer is that if a student from the same family asks for another device we are able to provide that to the families yeah so you know i think eric greenwood is on the call eric
137because i know you've been handling these but yes um we're doing it based on need if there's a need then we're providing those hot spots in fact we've because the needs have been so great we've had to order an additional thousand and now an additional 1 500 hotspots to make sure our students staff have exactly what they need to be able to connect uh mr greenwood is there anyone to comment on i know you're on the call i just can't see it that is that is correct so we uh messaging out to parents um many times since uh since march and we have been giving devices to two families that are requesting them the hot spots can handle multiple devices and uh the demand has been uh sharply increased i would say um in late
138since late summer so uh as dr fred had shared we've had to order we had 700 that that were approved in the 1 million project and then a thousand and another 1500 are on order right now we actually are receiving we received 400 of the thousand this afternoon and and the rest of the thousand early next week and we'll be distributing them okay but i want to clarify though if a family has three kids or two kids who are going to a uhsd and somebody requests for an extra hot spot because of internet connection issues we will provide them i want to make sure because i know jiren's answer and eric's answer kind of he said yes but then i didn't get a clear answer so that's a yes or no well it i think
139it it depends if if there is a need we will give the additional hotspot if if it is a matter of there are three students that need to connect to the internet the hot a single hotspot can connect up to i believe it's either five or eight devices so if there is a need where more than one hotspot is needed we would give more than one hotspot um okay all right um thank you in a the the second question that i had was regarding our social workers so the social workers that we are hiring i i miss the number how many social workers did we hire again we're looking to hire 12 social workers and 12 counselors on a temporary contract through december okay and and these folks would basically do the temporary work and
140i'm trying to figure out okay so our current social workers will kind of continue to develop relationships and i got that part what exactly would our temporary social workers and counselors do so it depends on the nature of what it is they're asked but for the most part they are going to backfill on some of the day-to-day duties that the social workers or the counselors would normally be doing um our obviously our permanent employees are the ones who have relationships and those are the ones we want our cur permanent employees really doing the treatment long term because they're the ones who are going to be here after december now obviously the temporary social workers can assist with with crisis and some of the other things they're also going to be used to help build the
141system as you know we're working with the mental health task force to build a comprehensive mental health system and some of that work has obviously been delayed because we are so busy responding proactively to so many students and families with their needs this will also help us to continue building that system to mitigate learning loss not just for what's already happened but even future plans same with our counselors i know adela is on the call too adele is anything you want to add to that piece yes i'm sorry i'm trying to fix my my camera without having problems with that with our mic in camera can you guys hear me yes we can hear you thank you yes so a lot of uh a lot of them you know jaren is right with everything that
142he said an additional task that the these 12 social workers are going to have is really assist in making sure that our families are connected so you have students with severe mental illness um they have severe issues going on so it's critical that we connect them to the right resources but part of that is really hand holding on a lot of these families so that oftentimes takes a lot of work from our social workers which prevents them from doing all the other stuff that jared mentioned right so and we're expecting more kids so one of the things that we want to leverage them is into helping us with those families and navigating all the systems that they have to interact with like hospitalization as they exit making sure that they're linked adequately receiving mental health
143services in the community so the case management is a targeted case management very intensive case management that we need that level of professional to be able to help us with okay thank you and then uh the next question that i had jaren was regarding our um you said that we were going to hire or we were actually going to hire pay teachers for saturday academy then i also saw the component of assisting our english learners with tutoring how is that going to look like so um essentially the saturday academy obviously teachers get paid to be on a saturday and by expanding we're going to be offering it on more saturdays um or allowing more teachers to participate to help uh mitigate the loss for for our students um so so that expansion could be more
144teachers to be on the saturday or even more saturdays that we can offer for our students so we can continue to connect with them and provide those services in terms of um the other question you asked was about um which one was it tutoring oh tutoring yes thank you so dr bryant and mr colon had a good meeting the other day with um a number of folks beginning to put the plans in place where we can hire teachers who will serve as i for lack of a better word it's like case carriers or case managers very similar to the to a special ed teacher who serves as a case manager for their caseload or their students um we're hiring people who can serve uh oversight over english owners on their respective sites to do additional
145work um with them outside of the school day making sure they're they're getting what they need making sure they're connecting they're not having connectivity issues really being that liaison that support to help them along the way they can also provide them with additional academic support they can help connect them with some of their teachers so really doing some intentional and strategic work with our students and their needs and again because of the learning loss budget right we're thinking strategically around the kids who typically will have the most difficult time with the online learning which is our guild horse our english learners our foster youth because students um so these are these are these are teachers or these are students these are teachers so it's paying them to go above and beyond so they have their
146work day where they're working but then above and beyond they can be holding additional meetings with teach with students following up with their these kids and their and other teachers so um because as you know the teacher work day ends you know between 2 45 3 o'clock typically so when they're working these additional hours making these connections intentionally we want to be able to pay them for that because as you know this the transition to virtual learning by itself is difficult right teachers are going to do far more planning in that transition because it's not um business as usual it's going to be very different so this at least compensates them for that additional time they're putting in with the students after their typical school day okay and then um i i i know i
147don't have another uh location in the agenda to ask this question but jennifer i know you and i spoke about food distribution and uh food distribution in our neighborhoods um hopefully i know i'll get back to you on the different neighborhoods that we're looking at but hopefully as a district we're looking into and partnering or working with ymca to figure out how we can actually take our food distribution to our neighborhoods so um as i shared um we trip we have the ac the capabilities of doing this by ourselves we really don't need the support of any outside services we have our food services department that has our meals we have our transportation department so we have buses um right now we have repurposed our bus drivers to be doing custodial cleaning and disinfecting but
148we can always pull them back so um based on your request orlando met with his team this week and he's looked at right now at several sites that we are going to try to start making work um before based on some of the addresses or areas you gave me were balsam and briarwood rosemont and belmont kenwood near a mobile home park and possibly east folsom avenue which are apartments one thing they're looking at right now is to make sure that there are enough students that would come from those neighborhoods to be able to get food at the buses and so right now right here's a new development too and that's why i brought ymc into the picture i heard that ymca is actually going to continue their program so i don't want to double up
149and you know waste food so maybe we'll touch base with them to figure out if they're going to continue their program that they're doing currently and if they are doing it then there's no need for us to do it so ymca cannot do the national school lunch program during the year they're getting a donation they're getting donations and they're continuing to do it okay so i know they're doing dinners and snacks so we would want to reach out them to find out because we want to be able to run our food service program because and ensure that we're paying our employees um for the district as well yeah and uh i'm going to make a couple of things and then i'll cut short my um questions is that one i think we discussed this before
150i've spoken to eric greenwood and i've spoken to mike matsuda you know i know mike wrote this article about you know it's also the way forward and we got to be courageous in spending our money and jennifer i know you're probably going to look at me i we got to make sure that you know internet access has been an issue for our students uh district-wide so i want to make sure that we as a district are looking at this vision of providing internet access to all our students regardless and i know we have a eric and i have a meeting on tuesday hopefully we'll get some more information and we'll look at it but uh hopefully as a board we will support that and move forward in terms of providing internet access to all our
151students um wherever they're living within our district i also want to take this opportunity to thank eric greenwood i know that he has done a fantastic job of not only pulling this entire uh you know school opening by himself at least yesterday it's a great article on orange county register i'm sure everybody read it but you know we we had the opportunity to pivot and we pivoted pretty fast only because we have a great team so thank you eric for your work i also want to take this opportunity to thank our teachers um i know they've been thanked a lot everywhere but i want to take this opportunity to thank them again because i know that they're going through a lot in terms of i think they're putting much more work uh teaching virtually and
152i could attest to this because i have two kids and i see the work that their our teachers are doing at home i also want to take the opportunity to thank our staff afscme members csca members our counselors and our mid managers because i think we talk about teachers but sometimes uh we don't appreciate the work that our staff does to keep our schools running so i want to make sure that they are think and i know we thank them but we got to thank them again right um and and i also wanted to um thank uh uh carlos i know you've been working and your team who's been working very closely with latino health access so thank you for all the work that you're doing i know we were in a meeting today in
153the morning too um you know great work uh so thank you again for all the work you guys are doing appreciate it hey thank you mr jabbar miss piercy i gotta try to remember my comments now um let's see first of all jennifer thank you because you've explained where the money's come from now so i have a more complete understanding of what the esser is and and i mean the majority of the money though is the one that has to be paid you know spent by the end of the year um so that poses a problem there i know um my other comment was let me see i'd like to say that i think our ed division considers it as not a challenge but an opportunity oh yeah right we will find ways for it
154but it is an opportunity to stretch us to better serve our community right well yeah um it's interesting and oh i know what else i wanted to say come on l cap another elf cap we gotta change that come on i mean it's gotta be come up with a pre a pre name like you know community hell cap or something like that i don't know but i go oh you gotta be kidding me i'm saying okay um really good presentation thank you um i know uh there's a lot of things that uh we're going to be discovering and i'm but this connectivity issue is really a tough one um and it makes me wonder why our cities haven't gone further with some of their ideas anaheim was supposed to connect the entire city but that
155kind of never happened um it sure would be nice if we could find a way to cooperate with our cities and get more wide spread internet connection because i know it's a difficulty and like you know we know that we have families that have two or three kids my daughter has four in her home so you know that's for going to school at the same time that's a tough one so um it'll be interesting to see what what we can do in the future here and what will you know what will occur but thank you for that presentation thank you mr piercy miss smith do you have any questions or comments i just would like to say that i too appreciated this i think that anyone that is listening in on this board meeting will
156get a greater grip on the breadth of what we are contending with in societally and in our community and in our school district so thank you one and all thank you ms smith uh i just have a couple of questions uh and also a comment um i know you're doing fantastic work uh john bautista getting the flyers out and everything but um i think we also have to make sure we're we're doing those phone calls and even making sure that we're you know making um not not just the all calls but even individual uh phone calls and i think you can use utilize your um your instructional assistants for that to make those you know i know our faces are doing a fantastic job and kudos to the faces out there i know they some
157were even working during the summer on their own uh without getting paid so uh somebody owes them starbucks cards out there um but but you know that's how dedicated our our employees are um so i wanted to make sure that you know we're we're really reaching out and that goes in that goes also into with the social workers and and i think that that will pick up uh some of those needs um in connectivity um i was going to ask you eric um are we i know you have so much on your plate um i'm wondering maybe you can get someone else to do this but find out and collaborate with our feeders and finding out like um do we know like where the like the the sweet spots are for the connectivity and then
158where the the the you know the challenging spots are um because it just seems like um it seems like i hear like from a certain area where it's just really difficult to connect um so i'm wondering if if we can do that jennifer um just gonna ask the question i already know the answer but we cannot we can't pay salaries out of this money right you cannot pay ongoing salaries you can pay salaries for the timeline that the the money is in place so one of the things we're looking at is where we're repurposing people the definition is significant substantially repurposing them to serve for coronavirus relief support then we are able to put this in those funds so for example i mentioned our bus drivers are now doing disinfecting and cleaning that's part of
159the coronavirus relief we assume we're still checking with everything that we could shift them over there um some of our food service workers um that we we've been losing money in our food service department we can put that money there so strategically we can put some salaries there but nothing ongoing um nothing that could extend out past the dates because the dates are so finite so we can't give raises with this money unfortunately no okay uh and just to point out that this money does not make our district whole by any stretch of the imagination uh it doesn't um [Music] i love your idea uh is this your idea carlos that moving forward um from uh surviving to thriving is that your is that yours um i don't remember i mean there's so many different
160collaborations that i mean you talk about that you know the the zip codes the folks in the zip codes you know can't be defined by their zip code so they it's not just about surviving it's about thriving i mean we i think in different conversations our district leaders have talked about that as well yeah well thank you for all your work and i know our promethoras are uh happy to do that anytime we can involve our parents uh uh they really want to be part of the solution uh as uh trustee jabbar said a lot of our um our support staff they really wanted to be part of the solutions a lot of the times we're taught we talk about the teachers a lot but our support staff are out there and i got a
161lot of calls about wanting to come back and you know the guys wanted to come back and clean the classrooms they wanted to mow the lawns and do do that work you know come and work on all the buses and things like that and they're just we have such a wonderful supportive kind giving um staff and employees we're just so fortunate so thank you on that um i know there was one more thing oh the the process um i'm very confident i just want to put it out there that we're going to get through this process with the the mini lcap or whatever we're calling it uh very well because of um i saw how we all connected with the um with the task force and then um gathered all together and then everyone went
162into their perspective uh spots so it just really truly reminded me um of how we literally do it physically do the the lcap process so i have every confidence um we're gonna get this work done and i love the fact that you are already combining all the data that we already have so um bravo to that fantastic thank you so much for this presentation okay moving on to uh items of business okay we are on 10.1 public hearing of temporary interfund transform it's an information item anyone wishing to speak there are no comments for the public hearing okay and a public hearing and moving on 10.2 resolution number 2020 slash 21-8 sorry dash b-01 temporary interfund transfer action item removed second so randall trejo i just wanted to say for a moment so some of
163you may remember we brought something very similar to you like this back in march or april um typically this is a standard item we bring we are allowed to pass a resolution that allows us to transfer between funds up to 75 of money in any fund so for example if we needed money in our general fund because of a cash shortage we could transfer money from our food services fund and then we can pay it back at a later date however because like you said just a few moments ago that we weren't made whole as a school district one of the things that we're anticipating beginning in february without um any federal relief is a large amount of deferrals as i shared during the budget presentation granheim union i believe the last estimates were we
164would have approximately 58 million dollars in deferrals between february and june receiving them between july and november that money and so it's anticipated that school districts will need to take out loans that they will have cash shortages so this was a new part of the state adopted budget that we are actually able to increase that amount that we can transfer to 85 and so we wanted to put that on here so we had as much flexibility as possible but again this is in response to an expectation that many districts if not most districts will be experiencing cash flow problems at the end of this school year thank you any questions uh ford okay moving for uh the vote mr o'neal hi mr jabbar aye ms piercy i miss smith aye and i vote i thank
165you jennifer item 10.3 resolution number 2020 21-hr01 classified reduction in force action item so moved second you know this is a tough one we don't like this one you notice how slow we are to have to i am uh i just want to say uh on this um i i am glad that we um we have collaborative uh even though it's hard and difficult i think we have collaborative um you know partners working partnership and i think that i um you know uh that is positive um even though this is a negative i don't know what i'm how i'm trying to say this because it's just it's awful uh so any uh questions or comments board no comment except for this is not a pleasant thing to have to do but we are in a
166bind we have certain things we you know things are different right now so we have to try to stay afloat the best way we can so thankfully it's not a tremendous number but it's still a few yeah yeah thank you miss percy okay uh calling for the vote uh mr o'neal i with regret mr jabar i would regret it i with regret so for sure yeah this myth sadly i and i as well uh vote i with regret um yeah that's a tough one thank you board uh business services 10.4 agreement waste not oc fiscally sponsored project of one oc action item seconded uh are we gonna get a little uh little mini report on this market free oh this was under business okay sorry okay um so waste not oc reached out to us
167um about three weeks ago and they have a phenomenal opportunity for us and this opportunity is to have the first in the world not even just the first in the state or the nation but the first in the world um solar powered refrigeration center waste not oc has been a partner with our food services department and works with orlando griego and we have always when we've had excess food provided to them and their goal is to take food that would have been wasted repackage it and provide it to families in need what they're finding is they are actually having too much food through different organizations not ours we're very strategic to have very low waste in our school district but through restaurants and other organizations they have more food than they can give out on
168a daily basis so they're looking at freezing it for two purposes one so that it doesn't go to waste and two so that if we had an emergency an earthquake um something tragic maybe a pandemic um that we would have food available and so they'll be able to store in this facility up to 2 000 individual and family dinners as they will within the storage facility they have eight months they can be in there and then at the end of eight months when things are rotated out they will be provided to our community services um group which um carlos hernandez heads up along with arisely chavez and aristele huerta and tanya garcia and we'll be able to give those meals out to our families to support them and then a really nice touch to this
169as well is that it is going to be decorated with from the community so also be i know much our board loves our arts and so we'll also have an art component with representing the community arts as well thank you so much i wanted to kind of give kudos to our my boss's office i should say uh waste.noc actually reached out to me a few few weeks ago actually because they were planning on relocating this in another part of our district when i say our district in full supervisorial district but unfortunately they were taking a little bit of time and they wanted to move it all the way to south county uh and i looked at it and i said nope this is a great opportunity that i union high school district called up mike
170matsuda of course the the action man he is he jumped on it and directed jennifer to have a conversation with waste not oc gladly we had a partnership with them so it worked out so i'm very very glad that it's going to anaheim high school and it's going to be a fantastic program and a project that our district will uh definitely benefit thank you thank you trustee jabar and uh thank your office um and the it's just a an amazing feat you know how many years i've been complaining about wasting food it's just uh it just hurts my heart and so i think this is a fantastic uh first step and i can just see these all over all over the city and all over the county and as you said jennifer this is the
171first in the world i love it i love it any other comments i have a question i would like to know how they determined that eight months would be the amount of time before they distribute it how come it's not seven or nine or four months you know i should have thought someone might have asked that but i will look into that and get that back to you mrs smith thank you okay so this is an action item and i will call for the vote mr o'neal hi mr jabbar aye ms piercy i miss smith gratefully i and i vote i as well thank you moving on agreement suarez suarez sorry suarez and henderson llp action item roll call vote moved second okay move to seconded any questions or comments okay hearing none calling for
172the vote mr o'neal aye mr dubar aye ms piercy aye ms smith aye and i vote i 10.6 new board policy eight four zero i'm sorry my eyes are getting tired eight zero one parenthesis five one four one point five mental health of students first reading any questions or comments on this information item adele's at the ready all righty okay moving on 10.7 revised board policy eight five four zero parenthesis six one seven three education for homeless children first reading questions or comments okay moving on information item 10.8 new board policy eight five four five parenthesis six one seven three point one education for foster youth first reading questions or comments okay moving on 10.9 agreement c-o-p-e cope health scholars action item okay thank you any questions or comments i have a comment um this
173is another opportunity for our students um that is really it's really good i mean of course it is a furthery a furthering of education in a specific field but this is going to be offered year-round enrollment to our graduating seniors so in other words it's uh it's like a tray trade type education where they don't have to necessarily go to a junior college or a four-year college they have a an opportunity to engage in a learning program that will head them into work even much faster so i'm really glad to see this it's almost like a uh what do they used to call it when you were uh i can't think of the word training on the job like our aim only even more inclusive so i'm glad to see this a paid internship right
174yes yeah well no i mean they're they're paying to do to learn but they will be you know educated more it's it's a it's another form of schooling it's a trade school like the fantastic okay uh calling for the question mr o'neal hi mr jabbar aye ms piercy hi miss smith hi and i vote i okay moving on 10.10 was pulled 10.11 agreement uh the dbq project action item second okay move to second second questions or comments okay hearing none calling for the vote mr o'neal hi mr jabbar hi miss piercy i'm miss smith i and i vote i 10.12 school sponsored student organization action all right uh 10.12 school-sponsored student organization and i'm going to make a motion on this one you know what about 10.11. we just did 10.11. the uh the other
175was pulled okay got it okay so we're on 1012 school sponsored student organization i made the emotion can i get a second second okay this is an action item i just want to say that this is just absolutely beautiful to see this all of these um organizations uh students uh stan stepping up and all of the teachers stepping up to um create these these beautiful organizations and uh can't wait to see what they what comes of all of this all right can i make a comment because to me to look at these seven clubs that are you know wanting to be around look at the work that went into this to get this accomplished when we're not even on campus and i mean and i and especially like the black student union i mean shauna
176and carlos had to do some calling to connect with teachers to see if they would or connect with students there was some work put into that and i just i want to acknowledge the fact that i mean i think this is great because that's a harder thing to do virtually than it is to do when everybody's there on campus and it's you know you shout out and you have people just running together and there you go but this was this isn't a real accomplishment very true very true all righty um moving uh for the vote to mr o'neill hi mr jabbar aye ms piercy i miss smith hi and i vote i moving on to item 11 consent calendar is there any item wishing to be anyone wishing to pull an item 11.10 b b
177okay eleven point plan b be anyone else 11.19 okay anyone else the balance okay move for the balance a second second i just i want 11 17. sorry got it right under there all right uh move for the the balance um and seconded hey uh mr o'neal hi mr jabbar hi miss piercy i smith i and i vote i item 1117 make it a motion here i move this item can i get a second second okay but we skipped 10 okay oh brian sorry sorry sorry and you skipped 11 10. sorry i'm so anxious to get mine under there 11.10 um before okay bb 11 10 uh moved and did i get a second second okay uh mr o'neal i've seen mr jabbar aye miss piercy hi miss smith hi and i vote i now
1781117 may get a motion i just wanted to uh point out the um again the tremendous work that we do with united way and the generous um grant that they give us uh so that we can continue um our anaheim innovative mentoring experience and it just proves um you know just the with a great partnership that we have and look what came out uh out of the summer and i'm looking forward to um hearing about the the uh the fall program and so just wanted to highlight that so uh calling for the vote mr o'neal hi mr jabbar hi miss piercy hi miss smith hi and i vote i 11 19. and i will second mr jabar yeah i just wanted to uh make sure that i know i had a conversation with jiren but
179uh wanted to make sure that this is only a short term uh to make sure that our staff are getting trained because obviously we're going to be using it um so if you want to take the floor and explain a little bit jaren yeah so basically absolutely trust me java so based on the conversation we have the last couple board meetings and and the teachers wanting additional support this is a perfect use of the learning loss mitigation funds to build capacity of our teachers and using the carnegie materials as you guys know you approve the three year but we're have the mass half math task force getting ready to start matter of fact i think carlos spoke with grant to finalize some of the aston members who will serve on that team as well as
180the math department chairs and other stakeholders that we talked about so whether we use it only for the one year or a couple years it is still important to make sure our folks are trained because we want them using the materials to their best ability and supporting our students so this is a good use of the funds it's the training that we feel is is going to be necessary to support our students and if we decide to move with a different textbook that's also fine the training is still going to be beneficial because it's still constructing the math and as you know with the frameworks being developed when we do go through a process three years from now regardless of whether we change uh next year or not uh the frameworks will be done so
181we'll have to look at a new text at that time to make sure it's aligned to the new frameworks so yeah this is our hope is to have the training done earlier on in the year because obviously they're working with kids starting yesterday right so this is gonna be an important piece okay i have a question because i i wanted to pull this one too because we are we are paying them hundred thousand dollars for their you know consulting with our teachers but i thought when we were discussing this that um they were going to give us more um time and help as a part of our going ahead and okaying this contract i thought that was going to be part of the you know their sort of their their offering for us to continue
182with their program but we're paying for it so if there is no other help coming forward other than what we're going to pay for no so this is paying for the professional learning the actual training of the materials the what they're what we talked about with them is they may serve periodically on the math task force to get the feedback from the teachers because as we recall the teachers have had some concerns with uh the materials so this feedback's gonna be important for them to get so they can respond or make the adjustments um if they're gonna want our business moving forward uh you know as we use their textbook after the frameworks or even for end of next year but this is a special training that we it's the right thing to do to
183be paying for the training because they're going to be spending hours working with math teachers on how to use materials and what it looks like connected to the standards okay well you remind me how many i because when i was looking at the exhibit it was i don't know how many teachers how many hours i mean was it like 40 hours or something like that you recall carlos do you recall tom i have to go back and look okay not on the first um no not not not on this one um see now this is where having your book with all the exhibits i could pull over to the i mean good old printed work i could go back and refer but right now i can't i don't know how to go back to that
184well i should have put it up on the uh i didn't think about that put it up on the screen in the back i could have gone back and forth huh all right next time anyway that's okay if you don't recall i was you know i just thought you know i can go back and look yeah i'm sliding down but it's taking me a while too yeah well hey that was them you know exhibit emma you know so it takes a while to get to it so that's okay um i don't need it anymore just i wanted to make that comment i mean have we you know i thought we had already paid for it but i guess not okay so this is a hundred thousand we're taking out of our code learning fund okay
185good remember survey was professional learning as well and this is obviously schoology the business learning this is also part of it and were you talking about the 210 math teachers for 40 days is that what you wanted yeah yes 40 years 200 teachers 40 days yeah that's a request okay okay thank you any more comments or questions i would like to be present to observe during the task force i'd like to learn uh just because i know that concerns come from different people who teach different levels of math and so i would like to learn absolutely absolutely thank you trustee smith i uh grant in fact reminded me to make sure that you're on the list so thank you grant thank you we have you okay all right thank you for bringing this item forward
186um call for the vote mr o'neal hi mr jabbar aye ms piercy aye ms smith aye and i vote i i'm moving on to superintendent and staff report any anyone wishing to shout out to uh eric greenwood and his team really uh yes doing some amazing work to really save the day for our kids and our teachers so eric thank you so much on behalf of the district and also thank you to all of our teachers and admins and classified everybody pulled it together and um it's another example of the obstacle is the way you guys we're so proud of you all thank you thank you superintendent anyone else wishing to give a report no no okay i'm getting lots of news okay board of trustees report mr o'neal you know under normal circumstances when
187we open up for a new school year is difficult process and we hear that there are issues that take place but they're always resolved and we move forward but this is a obviously a very difficult time right now a very different time and the the issues that were faced yesterday that mr greenwood stepped up and was able to really get in and resolve the technical aspects i i think that just goes to show the type of employees that we have not just in the technology area but throughout the district so um of going from the uh certificated staff to the classified staff to an admin i i say thank you so much for all that you do for all the thirty thousand almost thirty thousand students in the district thank you mr o'neal um mr
188jabar yeah i get my kudos before uh but i would like to reiterate that but i also wanted to take this opportunity to thank our latino health access partners who are doing some tremendous work in our neighborhood and as a result some of our parent leaders are actually being utilized as promotoris and they're doing some fantastic work there are unsung heroes uh going into neighborhoods and uh not only in the neighborhood but also during the testing they're out there doing some great work with our community so i wanted to highlight them i know i know the names but i don't want to mention the names and miss somebody and make somebody upset but as a group i want to make sure that all of them know that they're very much appreciated as a community i
189am also going to express my disappointment at the city of anaheim for not really taking covet 19 seriously as they should and not utilizing the funds in a way that they should be they have been utilizing it to support businesses but not our community uh uh in a way that they should they have done some little support but not as they should uh i think the you know i think it was trustee piercy who mentioned that you know in terms of internet connectivity uh it's not the school district that should step up it should be the city that steps up and takes care of this unfortunately uh hopefully we will be the ones to step up and take care of it and we'll have the city's partner other than that i wanted to thank all
190of you i think i mentioned the orange county register article it was a great article i know it was short but it showed the resiliency of our district and the way the work that we do and the caliber of employees that we have including our leadership so thank you all for all the work that you guys are doing appreciate it thank you mr jabbar miss piercy oh whoops i hit i'm muted myself okay it's a little hard to be you know going to a lot of different meetings but i have managed to sit in a few um i attended the csba's webinar that they had and that was interesting um a few of them were really interesting i actually sat in on the orange county department of ed's meeting that was really interesting and then
191i did the task force you know i listened in i didn't want to jump in and say anything but i but i did tune in to our opening of school task force to hear what was going on a couple of times and i did the same thing with our discipline committee task force that one i can join in because i'm a part of that group um and then i listened i mean i was part of the uh o'donnell webinar when he uh uh had a webinar talking about some of the things he's working on he does work hard for education unfortunately he hasn't gotten everything that he's tried for and then i also listened into a couple of principals meetings uh tuesday afternoon which was really interesting yeah [Laughter] let me tell you it was
192tough those principles i mean they didn't know what was happening it was just like good grief we you know and things kept changing and i mean and then we're already dealing with schoology and then we find out spectrum is out and aries is out and eric is trying to work with us and he finds out aries is out at the district i mean the district's wi-fi is out and he's sitting there so it's just it's been a real merry-go-round ride this week it's been difficult but our teachers and our staff have all really met up and i i have to say kudos to eric good grief he must not have gotten any sleep at all this past weekend because he you know no probably not brad's shaking his head because like somebody said he was
193working 36 hours a day and it was just you know and he kept working and it just kept things can happening and so it's just a kudos to eric because you did a great job wow and everybody because considering everything went pretty well i've talked to a couple of teachers and they you know they they managed you know and they had some pretty good turnout for their classes and you know some of the teachers who are not really technology adept still managed to get on and work so hopefully they'll all learn real quick let's hope tomorrow's a really good day so tomorrow is our first synchronous so we're supposedly okay i think hopefully all the the glitches of the the classes on a schoology are gone so i know i'll be hearing about it thank
194you miss piercy miss smith i i want to reflect on a trip my husband and i took in 64. back to massachusetts there's an amish community recreation and i remember visiting that community in a one-room schoolhouse and reflecting on what life was like back then and to what it is today and i would say this is the first time in the history of our country that we've ever gone through something like this and from a one school room house or a school uh to what we're dealing with with technology and eric and orlando and all the people that are doing what they're doing it's beyond awesome and all i can say is that you're just wonderful human beings and you're one of the reasons this country is great thank you miss piercy i attended i'm
195sorry ms smith i was thinking miss piercy because i attended the uh the o'donnell webinar with you and i didn't see you but uh and the um the task force the covet task force uh with you as well uh i also attended um of course our rop meeting uh and then um the rop had a pd uh welcoming back their um their uh their teachers so they had a teacher training day and uh in trying to make it fun they made it a rock and roll theme and dana lynch was um i can't remember his name but he was like darth darth vader or something like dj darth vader or something like that they always do fun things like that um i attended uh the oh the white cap uh meeting the celebration at magnolia
196with our um it's called the c c s three square cs3 squared is that did i get it right okay um it was really an amazing um presentation uh our collaboration with cypress college dr schilling spoke and mr uh superintendent matt souda spoke and they even had dr um how do you pronounce his name uh hugh i'm tired uh but they had him speak um so they configurated magnolia high school into kind of like a a staging area um on that for that front white uh wide area lawn they had the stage and then they put the cars in the parking lot and they spaced them out so um so that there was a car uh that could fit in between even if they were in the back so that they could see the stage
197area um as the cars came in we um shouted and gave them a a root loop and uh they gave us props and um and then each student got a backpack and they told them not to open it until a specific time and they got swag in there and then when it was over they got to drive around to get their official kind of graduation picture taken but the amazing thing about it was that these students were um 30 strong i think and they they started with a hundred so they selected these 30 out of the 100 but they're incoming ninth graders getting college credit that's just you know blows the imagination how how our district collaborates um so well with our partnership so um it was a really fun celebration the parents got to
198got to be a part of it and so kudos to um cypress college they set that up and kudos to us for being available having that partnership and working really hard our staff working through the summer to make that happen and this is our cyber security if um i didn't mention that before so uh innovation boy uh we're doing it um i also attended uh um ron uh ross billings um funeral service um of course our beloved um uh jan billings husband um i learned so much about him he was a renaissance man um who was the first uh the first teacher ever to use a computer in his class so think about that and think about the significance of that and what we're using our computers today for um and just amazing when he
199left our district he um he taught in community college and he taught el students he also created software programs and traveled to i think it was saudi arabia and to teach it just his resume was just you never would know he's he's uh was kind of a quiet man uh but as i i spoke about him before he he literally built a castle for um his beloved wife um and it's an amazing house it's 312 carnation um there there's a book about it if you want to learn more about it um and if the board would um so agree i'd like to adjourn in the name of um ray chips his passing not too long ago of course the husband of susan stocks our wonderful administrator our hearts are so full of sorrow at his
200sudden passing and so if we could adjourn in his name um i would like that uh any um any agendas items um board of trustees just wanted to call uh attention to i believe it's a typo for the next regular meetings and it says thursday november 9 it's the 19th okay and madame president 14.1 is an action item oh oh it is thank you right yeah that's right what are you thinking that oh i also wanted to mention that um i did uh contact uh before we go on to this sorry i just remembered i did contact um those students i called them individually to thank them um i think it's really important that uh the students that talked about our um at the last board meeting that all wrote those eloquent letters i just
201wanted to reach out and let them know um that that we heard them and that their letters were just phenomenal so um just wanted to to point that out so moving on advanced planning um action item it's all moved okay move to second did uh mr o'neal hi mr jabbar hi miss piercy aye ms smith aye and i vote i thank you for pointing that out maybe we would have we would have lost that alrighty any suggested agenda items okay hearing none i'll call for adjournment um motion removed second okay move this secondary mr o'neal hi mr jabbar aye ms piercy aye ms smith hi and i vote i thank you everybody
