So, we'll welcome you to the regular meeting of tax day, April 15, 2026. [laughter] We'll have roll call for who's here. Joe Gibson here. >> We here. >> We got more student of the month. So, Tom, come on up. All right, good evening. My name is Thomas Afford. I'm principal at Anderson High School and I have a wonderful student here, Rustin Sturgis, and uh he has been nominated as our board student of the month. um he had quite a few staff members that had positive things to say about him and and kind of the nature of of the board student of the month is somebody who's gone through some some things some adversity um whether it's figuring themselves out whether it's uh personal effects that are taking place and and so with that um Rustin
has um he definitely was under the radar uh his ninth and tth grade he um wasn't taking school too seriously and then he started taking school pretty seriously where he was uh he understood he need to get his credits taken care of put in a lot of time through uh summer school and um credit recovery. Uh Russ currently has a 3.33 GPA. Uh he's doing golf and he's um part of the yearbook. >> Yeah. And so, you know, kind of all those those people that that really see him on a dayto-day and see the see how hard he is working and then also know his improvement um have just been really impressed with him. And um I'll go ahead and read just a couple things. Um so Mrs. Weber, who who does our yearbook this
year, said that Russ is part of the Aurora staff this year and took the lead on multiple pages, including reworking pages to better fit the content of the book. He also is extremely respectful and kind to all of his peers, and that's something that keeps coming back uh through all of the the comments, just how respectful and good he is to other people. Um, and his golf coach, Mr. Jones says he hits a great draw. And so, yeah, I just appreciate being able to get get up here and talk about a wonderful student, Rustin Sturgis. [applause] >> Congratulations. >> Thank you. And um yeah, so then as always, our students get something that's kind of based on what they're interested in. And I don't know what Miss Adams put in his bag, but I'm sure
it it goes along with what he likes. And I've been told that he enjoys going to the gym. He enjoys MMA, golf, and uh so I'm sure that something in there fits that. So, thank you, Miss Adams. [applause] >> Gabriel, Diego, get up here. >> All right, Gabriel Diego. This is pretty common theme, silent genius. Um, I heard things like next person to take over Elon Musk's career. He's gonna Yeah, SpaceX it up. Um, quiet present who consistently stands out through his thoroughess, thoughtfulness, and mindfulness. He approaches each day with a calm focus and genuine curiosity, especially when it comes to a strong interest in space. Gabriel's respectful nature and love for learning make him a valued part of our community and school. I just want to say this is one of those students I'm
so glad got recognized because you see him walk by. You know, you don't know the impact he's had on the school and the teachers were so grateful to have you as a student. So, thank you very much for your hard work. [applause] >> Come on over here. >> However you want to do it. >> Yes. That's from Miss Adams. Oh, I'm off. >> Thank you very much. >> Thank you. [applause] >> So, now is the time for a public comment on closed session items. Is there any public comment for closed session items? Okay, we will now recess into close session. We will try to get out as soon as we can. Okay, we'll go back in session after the close session. >> Please stand your caps. >> Salute. Pledge. To the flag of the United
States of America and to the republic for it stands one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all. >> A motion to approve the agenda. >> Second to approve the agenda. Second. All those in favor I. Unanimous. In close session, the only action was due to government code 54957, we are draining to allow an appeal to the board in close session the next board meeting. [applause] >> [clears throat] >> Good evening, school board members. I'm Emmy Szer, ASB president, and I can't wait to talk to you about West Valley. Our boys golf team has had numerous matches so far and are getting into their NAL league matches. The team had a match yesterday at Great Branch where Aiden Moore and Jace shot a 21 and not a 91 and a 92. They have another NAL match tomorrow at Gold Hills. Our boys tennis team has been also working very hard this season. They are 10 and five overall with a big win over Hu Rica yesterday. They're playing EDNA today and have a NAL championship on Friday in Foothill. Our track and field team has attended many [clears throat] meets and they are competing very well. Some
of them have a meet this Friday in Orville and another one on Saturday at Enterprise. Many athletes have improved their running and drawing very much since last season. At the Eagle Classic Relays, our Spirit Medley relay team consisted of Alex Barfield, Brandon Rushing, Connor Garcia, and Isaiah Larival broke the school and stadium record for the second time for the second year in a row with an impressive time of 1 minute 35 seconds and 1 [clears throat] millisecond. Those same boys also set a new school record in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1 minute 32 seconds and 85 milliseconds. Our 4x800 relay team of Ethan Lois, Derek Rulon, Elijah Anderson, and Isaiah Larsel ran the third fastest time in school history of 8 minutes 10 seconds and 1 millisecond at the Oregon Relays. We
congratulate them and wish the best of the team luck as they continue their season. Our FFA team is currently on their way to Fresno to compete in state speaking finals. We have five kids competing. This is a huge accomplishment and means that each of these kids are in the top 24 students across California in their respective competitions. They compete tomorrow and we are very proud of them and wish them our luck. Our FFA team is also hosting the spring sale next week and are ready to sell lots of plants, flowers, and vegetables. 019Friday during lunch. We are also planning our next blood drive and appreciate all those who are donating. We are getting ready for next year's ASB team which we will hold elections for on May 20th. We are also purchasing things and getting ready for day on the green which will be held on May 29th. Our prom committee is also preparing for our prom which will be next Saturday. We are very excited for these activities. Thank you for letting me speak on West Valley's behalf. Are there any questions for me? >> Thank you very much. [applause] Thank you. [clears throat] >> Good evening board members. I'm Ashley Hope from North Valley High School and I'm happy to come here tonight dressed in my western attire to show an example of how we get spirited in alternative education.
We facilitate spirit spirit weeks at the end of every session. And although a healthy portion of our student body does not always participate, it's always a great turnout for our staff. And this allows for the students to see us, laugh with us, and build more connections that sparks more participation throughout the week. In other news, our counselor Jamie Marino is taking a group of students to Shasta College for a visit this Friday. Students are excited as the reality of growing up and doing adult things are fast approaching for them. We are happy to encourage them and help them along this journey. And as I am also the elective teacher for college and career, I am personally proud of those that are taking this opportunity to visit Chasta College on Friday. That will be this Friday.
Um overall, spring is here and our final session of the year is upon us. So, it is safe to say that we are all pulling out the stops to make the end of this year really great and count for our students. And with graduation around the corner, um we as a staff are working together to ensure that we get our seniors proudly across that stage. Thank you. And are there any questions? >> Thank you. [applause] >> We now go into public comment period. First off, we have a public hearing regarding the adoption of a resolution which will increase development fees established by the district as provided by the level one developer fee study. I'll now open that public hearing. Anyone like to speak to that hearing? That public hearing is now closed. We will now
hear comments from the public on agenda or non-aggenda items. the procedure. Individual speakers will be allowed three minutes to address the board on each closed session or non-aggenda item. The board limits the total time for any topic to 20 minutes. The board president may rule on the appropriateness of a topic and if the topic is more suitable at any time. The school district governing board cannot legally take action on a matter at one of its regular meetings if that matter is not on the official agenda. Is there anybody that would like to speak to anything on the agenda or non-aggenda items? >> Hi, good evening. Um, my name is Jennifer Vanderbeek. I'm a PE teach at West Valley and I'm here to speak on behalf of Justin Bixby um for coaching volleyball for this next
upcoming season. Um, initially we had met years ago when we were I was coaching Anderson Middle School and he was actually coaching at really know each other very well. In 2019, it was opportunity for me to actually start teaching um at West Valley. Didn't know what high school was going to be like compared to Anderson Middle School. So, I decided to do some job shadowing. In doing so, um it was my first interaction with him. Um to see someone in their element, um really just doing what they're passion, you kind of become marveled at what they're doing. So, what I witnessed was somebody who was super encouraging, um, very positive with the kids, very hands-on, and you kind of like I question myself, is this how it always is, or is this just how this
is today? Um, and watching him kind of work his wonder and to inspire these kids. Um, and getting selected for the position that I was interviewing for, I realized the next year when the school year started, this is how he is. Um, he's very ambitious. Um, if you see somebody as we go through life, you kind of need some life talked into you. Um, and he likes to talk life into kids. Um, as also as a staff member now, as he is my boss, as my principal, he hasn't changed his ways. um super encouraging and it's almost like when you show up to work and as you if you ever been on a sports team and you want to perform for them as a coach, you want an athlete to show up for you to
to play for you regardless of what's going on. And he has that ability to do that to his athletes, to his students, and also to the staff members at West Valley. So, it's not only been like a great opportunity to watch him to be encouraging, he's very motivating. Um, one of the things that even as he does walkthroughs, um, he'll get on, I call it the soap box, he'll get on a soap box and he'll praise the kids and tell them, encourage them on an opportunity that he had they have in being in a strength and conditioning class and in being in a PE class, how they can better themselves through activity in sports and also through training. So, I always get inspired when he does do walkthroughs in my class because I'm always learning
something from him that he's teaching to my kids. Um, and as an professional, I've always tried to strive for that because I feel like sometimes you get stuck in the rut of just doing their job. But he does have that opportunity and that ability to enlighten kids. And so when he left to go do admin, it was unfortunate for our students because he is such a great motivator in the classroom atmosphere. So, and that part of it and I was able to also work with him as a freshman coach. And to see kids want to play for a coach, just to show up regardless and work hard and do that is something that's a lost quality, I think, in a lot of people. And I really feel like with Justin being as a teacher and
an administrator and also as a coach, he kind of brings that out of people. Um, and I think is one of his best qualities that he has. Thank you. [applause] >> Good evening. My name is Shaunie Church and I'm going going to be reading a letter that I emailed to you all and I have not received response from dear board members and superintendent. My name is Shaunie Church and I graduated from West Valley High School in 2023. I spent all four years of my time at West Valley playing for the volleyball program. Two of these years being coached under my mom, Melissa Church. I wanted to take the time to speak on the issue of the volleyball program at West Valley as there are many concerns and questions about what is happening with the school's
varsity volleyball position. I want to start this letter off by saying that I've been contemplating whether I should even email you all considering that I am Melissa Church's daughter. Of course, I'm going to support my own mom, but I truly want what is best for the West Valley volleyball program as a whole, no matter what the circumstances may be. I'm not writing this to tell you how great of a coach and role model she is or how successful she has been. I'm sure you have already been aware of that at the March board meeting and in letters written on her behalf. I'm writing this letter because I have witnessed every perspective of West Valley volleyball program myself and I believe there is truth that needs to be told. As a spectator and as of last
this last fall of 2025, a volunteer coach, I feel that it is only right that I voice my concerns about a program that I care so deeply about. Over the last few years, Justin Bixby has taken the role of varsity assistant coach. I have heard many parents voice their concerns about his intentions as coach during this time. I did not fully understand those concerns until I witnessed myself while coaching alongside them. I can say with full full confidence that Justin Bixby is not someone the community wants in a leadership role, no matter what that role may be. He has proven this time and time again as he has been given the benefit of the doubt far too many times this last 202526 volleyball season faced a lot of adversity due to toxicity he brought as
he cannot be a part of his own program his daughter is involved in speaking as a coach's daughter myself I can tell you it is not an easy position to be put in and it never should be in the big case it has quite the opposite effect he shows extreme favoritism towards his own daughter this past season there were players who played the same position as his daughter who came to me in tears because of comments he makes to them during practice. All while still being the school's principal, he chooses to act unprofessionally, showing little concern because he knows he can get away with it without repercussions. While volunteering this last season, I witnessed Justin disrespecting the head coach and even myself during our first preseason tournament. It was it was our turn to warm
up. So, I grabbed our ball cart and started tossing the balls into the warm-up. Justin came over, pulled the ball cart away from me, and said, "Don't think you'll be taking my job this season." I honestly was shocked that he said that out loud. Situations like that shows Justin lacks self-control and professionalism. We have already seen how he handles leadership roles. What makes us think this will be any different? Are we not going to question his motives for wanting to take over the program? Is it a coincidence that this is happening during his own daughter's senior year after he complained about her playing time all season? Who would take such a significant pay cut just to be named the head coach of an already phenomenal program that has already been given opportunities to coach for?
To me, it comes across as manipulation and a power drive. These these are important questions that many of us have been asking ourselves, and I strongly encourage you to consider them while making your decision. Thank you for your time. [applause] >> Good evening, board community members. My name is Kirsten Payeyton. I'm the West Valley freshman volleyball coach and the 14U momentum coach. At the center of this matter is a concern that should outweigh everything else before you tonight. There are student athletes who are afraid to speak up out of fear of retaliation. That is not minor and it goes directly to the climate, the process, and the power behind this recommendation. Tonight, you are being asked to move forward with Justin Bixby, a man who is still serving as principal until June of 2026. Your
own board addressed this issue in January, and the resolution passed on January 21st, 2026. This board stated that administrators and quote shall not be eligible to serve as athletic coaches while employed in an administrative capacity end quote except on a temporary basis in unforeseen circumstances and only with prior approval. The board also explained why. They found that allowing administrators to serve concurrently as coaches may create conflicts of interest and interfere with school operations, student supervision, staff supervision, discipline, and oversight of athletic programs. So, this concern is not exaggerated. Your own district has already acknowledged it. Mr. Bixby's resignation from principal came first. He told athletes and community community members that he will be taking the volleyball program. The position was then posted as internal only. He applied. He interviewed and now he is being placed
before this board for approval. That does not look impartial. It does not look transparent and it looks like a path that was being cleared. That timeline raises serious questions this board should answer before any vote is taken. Who decided to open the position? Who decided to make it internal only? Is this common procedure when posting all vacancies? What role, direct or indirect, did Mr. Bixby play in the circumstances that led to this alleged vacancy, this posting, and this outcome? And were any of the people interviewing him, people who worked under his authority as principal? Justin Bixby is not simply the wrong choice. He is the clearest possible example of why your board had to pass this resolution in the first place. This board's own policies and procedures make the problem clear, not weaker. Your agenda
state that consent items are for routine matters and may be removed for discussion. This is not routine. A matter involving a city principal, a narrow posting, unanswered ethical questions, and athletes who are afraid to speak should not be treated as ordinary business. Tonight, you have a choice. You can pull this from consent, slow down this process, and require clear answers before attaching your vote to it. Or you can move it forward and teach every athlete watching that fear works, power wins, and ethics only matter when they are convenient. I'm asking you to choose integrity. Do not approve a recommendation surrounded by questions. Do not place your name behind a process that appears predetermined, unethical, and unworthy of public's trust. THANK YOU. [applause] HELLO, MY NAME is Emily Oram and I am a student from New
Tech. And so today during lunch I was informed New Techch has a chance of not being able to do sports next year. Uh I I'm not doing this for myself. Next year I will be transferring down to Anderson due to my family all transferring down over here. I am doing this for the students of New Techch because I may have the chance to keep on doing sports, but if we vote that New Tech can't continue doing sports through here, a majority of students within the Anderson area will not be able to do sports through Anderson High School from New Tech. I just want to say I during my time here doing sports, I had a blast. [clears throat] It was a time for us to remember. I did swim. I also did band. And I
plan on doing tennis and volleyball next year. And it is one of the best things a student can do is sports. It's healthy. It shows us how people can really be once you are vulnerable. And it shows like what to do in the future. Sports is one way people can go. It earns scholarships. It shows us how to react with in stressful situations. And as a student of new tech, I want to say every new tech kid should have the chance of doing this. It's literally the best thing ever. Back when I did band, we were unfortunately cut off this year from doing band due to a very uh moving away. But when I did band, we had so many things we had to do, songs, pieces, um performances, and the people around me were
the best people ever. Whenever you do a sport or some sort of extracurricular, it really shows you how people are. And I've learned that the people here that are considered weird are actually just the best people you want to hang out with. And I want to give other kids at New Tech a chance to come hang out with these people. People that usually don't have a chance making friends within their own school. Make really good friends with people from other schools. And it gave me a chance to actually connect with people from other schools too. I have friends from West Valley, Anderson, Central Valley, even schools all the way down at Glasson. It is just it's beautiful and I love sports. And I'm not doing this for myself. I'm doing this for the kids next
year and the kids who are currently doing them. And if not, at least father the students who are currently within sports that want to continue. THANK YOU. >> [applause] >> GOOD EVENING um board. I appreciate you uh letting me come up here and speak. I'm not going to say any negative things about any past coaching or anything like that. It's a tough job. No one wants to do it. Uh I'm here to actually uh just kind of appreciate the opportunity to speak for Mr. Bixby and his coach coaching position. I've been around here. My son played four years at West Valley. My daughter's going on her fourth year. There's multiple letters that were sent to the board from current players, as you guys know, supporting Mr. Bixby. Um, Mr. Bixby is a veteran, a longtime
educator, a tireless advocate for students. Throughout his career, he has consistently put students first, especially those who are often uh underserved. He has uh gone above and beyond to help the underprivileged youth connect with positive outlets, including introducing them to outdoors experiences that build confidence, resilience, and perspective. As a longtime wrestling and volleyball coach, Mr. Briley understands that coaching is more about more of more than wins and losses. He develops character, discipline, and accountability. his athletes know that they could come to him not only for coaching but for guidance, encouragement, and strength during challenging times. Above all, Mr. Bigby is a person of the utmost integrity. He leads by example, holds high standards, and creates an environment where students feel safe, supported, and motivated to become better people, not just better athletes. Mr. Bixby truly
embodies every aspect of what we hope for as an an educator and as a coach. I believe he will be tremendous asset to our school and students to serve as the head coach. Thank you for your time and thank you for consideration. [applause] >> Hi, my name is Amanda. Last month, I sat here and I listened to a very public verbal assassination on a person that I know to be a man of integrity and great character. Not only has Justin Bixby had a tremendous impact on my kids who have played a combined five sports at West Valley over the last 5 years, but he's had a huge impact on myself personally. I graduated from West Valley in 2004, and I can assure you that although my principles were nice, they were not nearly as involved
in every facet of the school like Bixby is. I'm heavily involved with my kids school activities and sports. I'm also involved in onampus activities like the site council meetings and the wrestling team. I'm on West Valley's campus more than most parents. Most times when you visit the campus, you're greeted by a very cheerful smile from Bixby and he's usually surrounded by kids that want to talk to him because they love him. You see you see him in the parent drop off line greeting kids and saying hi to the parents. You see him in the cafeteria chatting with kids. You see him at sports events cheering on our school and also the other school. And you hear him talking about how to make things better at West Valley. He has mentored me in coaching and when
I doubted myself and I talked and talked me through tough situations more time than I can count. He has encouraged me to be the strongest that I can be and empowered me as a female lo leader and a coach to do what's best for our kids and our athletes at West Valley. He loves making things better than how we found them. I'm on the site council meeting and I can tell you that I have never seen anyone more excited about rising attendance and yearly test scores than Justin Bixby is. He takes the opportunity to learn the deficits that come with the come up with solutions to making results better. He focuses on all students and making their time at West Valley productive and positive. I know most of you probably don't personally know him and
I know that all of you heard lately are very negative things from some people, but I can assure you that there are so many just like me that have nothing but positive things to say about Justin Bixby. I've seen firsthand uh I've seen firsthand the positive interactions not only with students but faculty at his school and how much he values his time with all of these people. How much of his time he gives up from himself and his family to show up for kids other than his own. I hope that tonight you take the time and to truly listen to the community that supports him because I can assure you men as caring and as dedicated as Justin Bixby are becoming harder and harder to find. And we would be so lucky to continue having
him involved with our kids and our kids' lives at West Valley. [applause] >> Hello board. Thank you for having me. I'm also here to speak on behalf of Justin Bixby. Hello, my name is Treyu. I was a graduate of the 2025 class in West Valley. Justin Bixby was one of my wrestling coaches for all four years of high school. And he was also one of my favorite and most inspiring coaches I've ever had the pleasure of having. All through high school, I was a triore athlete with wrestling being the hardest both mentally and physically. Bixby was that one coach that believed in you no matter what if you were willing to put in the time and effort to get better. Even over breaks like spring break or like Thanksgiving break, he would come in take
time from away from his own family to come in to help you go over film and do one-on-one sessions with wrestlers to because they wanted to put in the effort to get better and he wanted to watch them grow and get better. As a captain of the team, it was my job to help the young wrestlers get accustomed to the wrestling mentality, but no one could do it as well as Pixby could. He would personally work with the younger wrestlers to make sure they understood the technique and they did never never felt left behind when the rest of the move rest of the room was moving on. Uh for you for those of you who don't know, there's a wall within the wrestling room has all the names of the past wrestlers who have placed
in sections for wrestling. From the first time I looked in that room, it was my goal to have my name up on that board and leave my mark in that room. My junior year, I thought I was ready and I thought I had what it took uh to place and get my name on that wall. Unfortunately, I fell one place short of being on the wall, and I was absolutely devastated. All I could do was sit on a wall and think about losing that match. Let it be known that Bixby was the first person to come sit down next to me and comfort me, but he only did it for a little bit. He said, "You can only be sad for five minutes, then move on and never look back. Focus on the future." And
if he hadn't come over that day and gave me that advice, that lost my soy today. On June 8th, I I'll leave for boot camp to become a Marine. My decision to become a Marine has come from looking up to people I know who have came out of the military and how they lead in life. Pixie as a veteran, he was my main inspiration for joining the Marine Corps for his virtues, his values, and how he inspires athletes to be the best versions of themselves both insides and outsides of the sport. A coach's main goal should be to create good humans after they leave their respective programs. And I think Bixby does an amazing job of this. I believe wholeheartedly that Justin Bixby was one of the biggest influences on me and the man that
I am today. Thank you, board. Thank you. [applause] >> Hello. Hello. I'm also here to speak on behalf of Justin Bixby. My name is Alen and I'm a senior at West Valley. I was also a four-year wrestler with Bixby as a coach of mine all four of those years. Wrestling is an incredibly difficult sport, especially as a girl. Bixby was an amazing coach through it all. There have been so many times that I doubted my own abilities, but Bixby never once did. Even when I had difficult times with the sport and my self-conidence, confidence in it, Bixby always had wise and encouraging advice. He pushed me to try things I was scared to do, take care of not only my body, but also my mind, and on more than one occasion to not quit the
sport altogether. He taught me that failure is nothing more than an opportunity to learn and how to not get discouraged. I love days that he would come into the wrestling room and coach because he was always encouraging a patient, even on his fifth time having to explain a move. This last season, I was talking to some of my coaches about a particularly tough win against a girl I thought that I had no business beating. But Bixby chimed in with, "I'm not surprised that you beat her. I knew that you could." That alone was so refreshing to hear because going into that match, I had such little confidence, but he had believed in me all along, more than I had believed in myself. He's also just an amazing man to just talk to. My junior year,
we had a duel at last and I sat shotgun with him on the way there. The entire two hours, we just talked. He told me story stories about his time in the Marines, and he gave me countless pieces of advice. I enjoyed that ride there more than I did wrestling that day. So much of my confidence in wrestling came from his belief in me even my freshman year. For context, I didn't win a single match. I was not very good. [laughter] Despite my terrible record, he continued to help and encourage me because he saw potential in me. A potential that I rarely saw in myself, even through to my very last match. Countless times I've told myself that Bixby saw some enough of something in me to try and aid in my success as much
as he did. There must really be something there in that sport. I grew so much as a person and Bixby is responsible for part of that growth. I absolutely would not be the person that I am today without his guidance and support. I am saddened beyond words that I will never again get to experience being in that wrestling room or out on the mat being coached by him because I so dearly value his advice and his coaching and his utmost most faith in me. Despite that, I will always be keeping his lessons and advice in my mind because they along with the memories that he's given me are incredibly dear to me. Thank you. [applause] >> Hi, my name is Maddie Steel. I graduated back in 20120 from West Valley and got the opportunity to
play for Melissa my last two years of high school. Um Melissa's not only just a knowledge knowledgeable coach who knows a lot about the game and um is just great for players, but uh she also is just a great role model for her athletes and how deeply she cares for each of their well-being. Um and she just encouraged me not only to be just the best volleyball player I could be, but also the best leader and just to grow in my character. Um which is something that I've taken with me as I continued to play in college. Um, [clears throat] one of my the most impactful things from that program was our word of the week that we did. Um, and we pick a word word for the week that would um, be applicable to
the competitions and our practices that week. And not only did she continue that my whole time at West Valley, but also as I went on to play five seasons of collegiate volleyball, she texted me every week and just maintain that relationship with me, which really impacted me as an athlete. And um I just probably wouldn't have been able to continue um playing college volleyball if it weren't for her. And I just think that really speaks to the relationships that she's able to build with her players. Um, and I just feel like it would be such a loss for just the whole program to lose her as a role model and just to lose that relationship with her that I got the opportunity to have. Um, so that's all I have to say. Thank you. >>
Thank you. [applause] [laughter] >> Hey, that [clears throat] was tough to hear on all sides, right? Um, I'm not here to to talk negative about anything. Um, but I do want to shed some light on the past. I read an article that said, um, Melissa was the coach in 2017. Um, Harla Davis was the coach in 2017, and I interviewed for that position in 2018. Um, I sat in front of a panel, went to the board. Um, I have a really well-written thing, but it's hard to read. I want to get to the parts that I think I think I really want to share. Um, I started in the Pico and I met Melissa and Jesse and they had a cool club going and they needed a spot to practice and they needed another coach
and I was the ado and I was coaching volleyball. It was perfect match. Um, I just want to say that was the beginning of one of the best relationships I've had. Um, fast forward, I was going through the administration program and uh, I got recruited to be the B teacher at West Valley. I said, "No, I love I love Facum." Parker knows [snorts] I was his I was his AD. Um, but EMTT was persistent. So, I I told him there'd be some some things. I was not going to coach PE. I would be a strength and conditioning teacher for all athletes, girls included. I know Maddie was impacted by that as well. Um, so he gave me the position and at that time that's when Carla Davis retired and I interviewed for that. Since getting
hired the last two seasons, I've done everything behind the scenes possible. Um, I I have them all listed here. It's every single thing. Transportation, facilities, everything. Summer workouts, you name it. purchase orders, all paperwork. Anytime a different coach at any level couldn't make it, I went. And the first two years of that volleyball program, I think Melissa would agree, even though we didn't win as much, it was awesome. Uh, we were tight. We collaborated. We met, went over practice plans. It was fun. Really fun. And I think the kids noticed it. Maddie was part of that. Um, I had a lot more time then. I wasn't an administrator. So, I had a TA that would help um evaluate other film [clears throat] and we would uh we would we would become the other team. So,
I would watch the other team and I would tell Melissa, "Hey, this is where they're weak. This is where we can score." And um I you know, Megan says no. And if you know, you know. It's an inside joke. Um, as as I became more involved in my role as an administrator, I did less and less with the volleyball program. And Melissa did do more and more. I want to finish this just with one thing and say I'm not stepping down from administration to coach one season of volleyball with my daughter. I'm stepping down from administration to be a better, happier me with a better happy healthiness with my family and with my relationships. including my relationship with people like Melissa Church where I must take responsibility for my part of it deteriorating. >> Thank
you. [applause] >> Good evening members of the board. Mr. Parker, thank you for this opportunity to speak. My name is Willie Church and I'm the husband of Melissa Church and the current varsity baseball coach at West Valley. I'm up here trying I'm up here today trying to make sense of the consistency in what we've been witnessing over the last few months. The football team has been drugged through the mud. No coach, no leadership. My wife has been drugged through the mud. Sorry, I tapped my phone. I got lost my voice. Um, my wife has been drugged through the mud and treated poorly. She has been told by West Valley administration not to return emails from other schools that are reaching out interested in playing tournaments or games against West Valley because she is not the
coach only to find out that Mr. Bisby Mr. Bixby has been sending emails and reaching out on his own to schedule volleyball games and open gyms. Back in February, she received a phone call from Mr. Bixby with him stating that he's going he's going to be the new coach and he's taken over the program and she won't even get an opportunity to apply. She has also received phone calls people stating that Mr. Bixby has been telling people around the campus that they are co- coaching this year and that she has stepped down on her own so he has taken over the program. Sounds like administrative overreach, poor leadership, no consistency, and unfortunately for the athletes of West Valley, this has been the norm as of late. I know as admin administrators and board members, it
is recommended that you follow the egg code that protects teachers and gives them first choice if they are interested in coaching a sport. When I was hired as the baseball coach almost two years ago, my interview took place with Mr. Bixby on his back deck. A current teacher at the time at West Valley, the JV baseball coach, also applied for that same baseball position. I was given the job as an off-campus coach, so the bar was set. You don't have to be a teacher to get the job. The most qualified person got the job. You can be hired based on your qualifications and experiences alone. And when I was a softball coach behind Don Howard and once he got sick, I never when I rolled into that position, I never did have to interview for
that. I have no issues [clears throat] on how all this was done because we are West Valley and we are different. But what it brings me back to my main point, no consistency. >> [clears throat] >> My wife's job. My wife is at risk in losing her volleyball job over someone who is willing to take a significant pay cut to step down as principal and to coach their daughter because he was unhappy with her playing time. How are we even in this discussion? How does a successful overqualified coach possibly lose her job when there has never been any intention of her to step down? I trust that you will see the different motives in the two coaches we are dealing with. One is for themselves and the other one's for the kids in the community.
I respectfully urge you to consider moving consent item 5.2 to an action discussion item in tonight's agenda. Thank you for your time. >> Thank you. >> So is this a different subject or the same subject? >> Same subject. >> And this you're the last one then we run over 20 minutes. >> Um good evening. I met Coach Church and her family many years ago when I was a a Bernie high school volleyball coach. I've had the opportunity to coach alongside of her in club volleyball and I have the utmost respect for her, not only for what she knows, but for how generously she shares that knowledge. Coach Church is exactly the kind of leader students need right now. She is knowledgeable, committed, and most importantly, a role model these young women look up to every
single day. The program is more than just wins and losses. It is where students build confidence, discipline, and a sense of belonging. Coach Church helped create that. She is not just part of this program. She is the cornerstone of it. If you remove her, you are not just making a staffing decision. You are making you are risking the future of a program that has taken years to build and has earned respect across the North State volleyball community. Programs like this don't easily recover once they begin to fall apart. I listened to the last board meeting and it sounds like families may already be considering leaving this district. This is the kind of decision that they pay attention to. When proven dedicated leaders are passed over, it sends a message and it is not a good
one. This is about fairness. This is about doing right by these students. Coach Church has already proven herself. She has earned this. Your community is here tonight because this matters. Please listen. Please do what is right for these kids because when this decision is made, it won't be remembered on paper. It will be felt in every empty gym, every player who walks away, and every family who decides this is no longer the place for them. And once again, once that trust is gone, you won't get it back. >> Thank you. [applause] >> Good evening, board. Um, I just wanted to say thank you for the time you put into this. I know the last three meetings have been rough. Uh, the thing I would like to talk about is item 6.7. Um I was reviewing
this and there is some um substantial um deficiencies in a couple of the West Valley accounts that uh it's being advised that the principal fund is being allowed to use to offset those shortages. Um I just had a couple questions I'd like you to consider. Um, one, my understanding is West Valley has boosters programs for every uh, program. So, I wanted to know if those booster programs were asked for funds first. And, um, second, I wanted to know um, why Anderson was told they their principal fund couldn't give $600 for our homecoming clothes that students needed to fund raise for that. Um, I feel like that's a great in it's not equaling up. You know, West Valley can use thousands of dollars from their principal's fund, but Anderson can't use 600 for theirs. Um, so
I would just like you to review that and think about that. Uh, second, I would like to thank you guys for hiring the bus driver. Uh, this has been something I've brought up a couple times that we don't have bus drivers for our sports and we're driving multiple vans for multiple sports events. I've driven for cheer and volleyball and softball and so hopefully the bus driver if we can find more that can help alleviate a lot of sports shortcomings for getting their athletes to their programs. Um, and then last, I would like to just point out, you know, the board is paying for West Valley's football camp this year. Um, please go look at Anderson's football field. It's a health and safety issue. >> Thank [clears throat] you. >> Thank you. [applause] >> Anybody would
like to speak on a different subject other than we finish the time period on. Hearing none, we will move on to the set item. >> Mr. Gibson, I want to point out one thing. Since we only had three people tonight, we double checked ED code. Schoolboard boards have to have a majority of the [clears throat] total panel. So, Anthony voting has to be 3 to pass. If it's a 2-1, it's like no actions taken, doesn't pass, doesn't fail, and no action taken. So if there are any two-1 votes, yay or nay, um we will simply put it on the next month agenda. But we talked about that before was we heard it was the majority. >> It's majority for some boards but not for educational boards. >> Okay. Thank you. >> Okay. Consent items. We
got six consent items. Would anybody like to pull a consent item off the agenda? >> I'd like to pull 5.2, please. >> 5.2. Are there any other consent items? Can I get a motion to approve the other five? >> So move second. >> There's a second to approve 51, 53, 54, 55, and 56. All those in favor? >> I unanimous. Okay. Going back to 5.2, the human resources report. Any particular part of that report you would like to pull? Uh, yeah. I'd like to vote on Mr. Dixie separately. >> Pardon me. >> I'd like to vote on Mr. Dixie's position separately. >> That separately? >> Yep. >> So, >> what would you like? >> I'd like to make a motion to deny it. >> I think we need I think we need a motion to
pull it, too. [clears throat] >> Then I just pull it. >> Make a motion to pull it. See if the second pull. to to vote on it separately. You need >> Yes. Before you vote, so you'll be made a motion to pull it from the consent agend discussion. I'm not going to make that motion. And that's 21. >> So like I said, it's non action. >> There's no second. >> There's no action. No action. So >> all consent items [clears throat] then correct or >> no that's just 5.2 that portion and the rest we can vote on you just want Mr. Right. >> Yeah. I think it's fair that we do it separately because that's the only people here. >> So we did not we did not you did not win but there's no action
to be taken. >> So last time you guys broke out the FFA teacher to speak about that separately. So I think that's what she's wanting to do is to speak about each individual one separately. And you did do that for the FFA teacher. >> You did that with grand too. We pulled them separately. >> Okay. >> On that that meeting because it was so chaotic. We also failed to approve the agenda. So you're saying you want to pull one then vote on the rest of them separately. >> Mhm. >> Okay. Long as we vote on the rest of them separately. >> As a group. Okay. So >> So we know we just had 28 30 minutes discussion on the topic. when we pull it, we'll vote on the remaining items on the HR report and
then we'll have the board discuss it now because the communities already discuss that. >> Correct. >> Okay. So, can I get a motion to approve the other seven people on that consent? >> A motion to approve. >> I second. Okay. >> Move a second. All those in favor? I I that's unanimous. Bringing out Justin. discussion. >> Yeah, I um I vote to not approve because there is a lack of confidence in the community of favoritism. Um it's not personal. It it just um well, everyone has their opinion um and I'm entitled to mine. What have you thought? >> So, um I'm I'm voting to deny if that's what we're doing or are we not taking an action? >> It's on the consent. It was pulled so it has to be voted on. But like I
said, if it's a unanimous no, then it's no. If it's unanimous yes, it's yes. If it's split, there's no action taken at all. >> So that means we'll move that on till next month. >> I still I still think you should pull a vote just just to do it. All those in favor of testim. >> No. [laughter] >> Either way, can I abain? >> Doesn't make any difference, but yes. I'll >> stayain and I will vote yes. So therefore, it carries on till next month. >> Doesn't make any difference. estate doesn't count, but it was still going to be a one-1 tie. It was no action taken, >> right? Either way, it has to be majority of the five pound board, which is 30 vote. So, it wasn't passed, but it wasn't failed either. So,
it'll be on the next month agenda. >> Okay. So, you know, I' I'd like to say something. It'd be nice to have all board members present um when we do these meetings. They have to be here once a month, >> you know. Um, this is the second time we've had only three board members here. It's kind of ridiculous. >> You know, and if other board members are serving on other boards, that's interfering with it. Maybe that should be looked at. >> Agreed. [applause] Moving on to uh 6.2 administrative items, transportation staffing update. first in house bus driver hired in over 20 years information. >> Yeah. just uh I don't know how many years ago, but 18 years ago or so, we reached up our own transportation department and that was dissolved and the Shast County
Office of Education ran our our our temptation system. And um then after several years, they told us they couldn't do our our our regular routes, they could do our special ed routes. And so they they basically canceled us. So, we had a contract with uh Cascade Elementary to use their drivers for our we have our own buses of course. And finally, we've uh come to a point where we're taking back our transportation department. Um we are hiring I know the lady talked about drivers. We are hiring four more. We'll have five total. And uh for our transportation department, this person was the first person of those hires. So, we're very excited about that. So, how many have we hired so far? >> Just one. Okay. And we got How many are we looking for? >>
Five total. >> The drivers that um are employees of Cascade once we cancelled the contract and he heard that they got laid off [clears throat] and they're going to be applying for our jobs. So, we had we had drivers set up. >> Okay, that sounds good. >> Okay, moving on to 6.3. discuss the potential change of moving close session from the beginning to the end of future regular meetings. >> Discussion of action. >> So >> I motion to keep it the same. >> Yeah. Second. >> Moved and second that we keep it the same. >> So the same would be that there's one at the beginning but then we also have the option to have one at the end. >> Correct. >> Okay. All those in favor? >> I. By the way, we are going
to look [clears throat] at breaking things up. Some things we can't break up because we need to have them before the meeting, but we do realize we can break some things out and have them at the end of the meeting, which should make it better. Sometimes we can't take these long ones out, but we we can try. That's all we can do. We'll have now the front and the back. We have to have some at the front. Okay. the action item. Well, that was the action. Okay. 64, division of board policies, administration rigs, and bylaws. Those three mentioned in the f. Is there any change that you want for those three? Not. Can I get a motion? >> Yes. >> Any question? >> I didn't have any questions. Yeah. >> Second. All those in favor?
>> I motion carries unanimous. 6.5 application for renewal of the CIA school membership for the 2627 school year for West Valley Early College High School. >> Motion to approve. >> Second. >> There's a second. All those in favor? >> I. Unanimous. Carries. [clears throat] 6.6. Six, designation of the CI representative to the league for the 2627 school year. [clears throat] >> Motion to approve. >> Second. >> All those in favor? >> I unanimous. 6.7 agreement with Shasta County Office of Bid for extended school year transportation. >> So move second. >> We're not trying to take that one over. >> No. Okay. Yes. All unanimous carries. 6.8. By the way, anybody has a comment about any of these, you can step up to the microphone on any each one of these because no one's talked about
them. You're in the Sh County Office of Ed for tennis behavior and health mental support services. >> Motion to approve. >> Second. All those in favor I >> I carries sign unanimous 6.9 memor understanding of chast county office event for school building safety numbering and campus mapping initiative >> have a question on this [clears throat] >> um it says um under duties number two that we will pay. So I just want to make I want to confirm because it's not coming out of our budget. There are some costs here on our budget. It's not all paid by all of them. Um it's it's basically a building mapping system that the county will be symmetrical on. So if any law enforcement agency comes on any campus, the way the buildings are numbered, they'll know which where
to go based on the reports. There's a curriculum on campus. It's what is a bill full bill can't be too much. >> They didn't say they didn't specify any cost. They said that they would cover >> $180 per student for a bill of $236547. >> It's a $180 per student. So, our current ADA would be $2,36547. >> And that's to be a part of this mapping system. Like, would we have to do it through Skully or >> what page was that on? >> What was that that breakdown? >> I'm on the electronic document. I'm not sure what >> it's the second page of that item 6.9 section right in the center. It has it kind of in its own line. He's not saying it. >> He was looking at a different agreement. >> Yeah, >>
I think that was for mental health services. >> Yeah. It's not There's no specification, but I can see >> I know we have to cover the cost of paint like we're going to we're going to put building on the ceiling on the rooftops. So, the hell know which. There are some cost to us. It's pretty minimal. I think it's it's well worth the cost for student safety. It's minimal. >> Okay. Make sure it did say motion [clears throat] to approve. >> Yeah. A motion to approve. Second. Can we find out please what the cost is? >> Move and second. All those in favor? All right. >> 610 agreement for participation in Sh County Office of Ed School District Classified substitute substitute consortium to approve second. >> All those in favor? >> All right. Unanimous. 611.
School plans for student achievement for AHSD sites for the 2526 school year. And that's for all five locations. >> Um motion to approve. >> Second. >> Move and second. All those in favor. >> I unanimous. 612. Agreement is shared down with shiny committee college district. >> Motion to approve. Second. >> Move. Second. All those in favor? >> I. All right. 613 College and Career Access Pathways Partnership Agreement with Blue Band Community College District. >> Motion to approve. >> Second. All those in favor? >> I unanimous. Business and financial 614 agreement with AT&T for Worldwide Network One Services. That's information. >> How much is that going up from what it was last year? [clears throat] >> It's actually I think it's actually going down. >> Down. >> Nothing goes down. >> I have to pull up
the contract. But >> yeah, I think it's actually a little cheaper. >> Good. Great job. [laughter] >> Anybody have any questions? >> 6:15. uh agreement with Shasta County Office of Ed for highspeed internet services. That go down too. >> Actually went up just a tad. [laughter] >> Just a tad. >> What's a tad? >> I like a 100 bucks. >> Oh, that's >> Anybody have any questions for Derek on that? >> Okay. 616 memor understanding with chefs county office of for the implementation of tobacco use prevention and youth engagement grant >> I have a question did we have did we designate already somebody from the district office to be the liaison for this >> I'm sorry say it again >> did was there a designation made already for someone to be the liaison it says
there's somebody that will be designated like a designated rep or leazison >> that's probably Uh, so we've already done this because this is for our our SAR thing, but if if you recall, um, the county added the opioid thing, the funds and stuff, and we were not getting services for our students. We brought that community grant. This is part of that process. Um, so the fact that I'm on it, I signed the agreement, I designated. >> Okay. >> All right. Motion to approve. >> Second. All those in favor? >> I. >> Unanimous. I. 617. Transfer of funds from the West Valley Principal Lottery to the Associated Student Body. SB mentions a manual. Can we um can someone speak to this on how this got to the >> negative? How we end up in the negative?
>> So we have they have two different foundations right now. Both of them we don't have the ability to unlock any of the money because of the rules. It will still be negative after that but it won't be anywhere near as negative. And we've been trying to get the money unreleased. However, they have to hold any money for an x amount of time to make sure that there's not supposed to be any IRS fees come out of it. Is that correct, Jim? The way I understand it. And so until that happens and until we have a head coach and a governing board that is able to vote and say it's okay to move that money. So, we've we've been at a standstill for a while and the show has had to go on >> and
and we're we're trying to take action on this before the end of the year so that it doesn't get another audit finding. So, I felt that this would be the best way to get them back in positive status before audit season. >> You can also ask Stacy Adams. she was um put on the second board that was there was one that was dissolved pretty abruptly. Um and the previous head coach worked with her because I was on the first board. Um previous head coach worked with her to bring to start a 5013C without us. Um so she would have some more information on that. >> Do you know if there's any agreement about paying back the district? the board. I know the one that I was on, they got dissolved via text. Um, that is
working that's in the bank system with the IRS right now to be reviewed and as soon as the taxes are done, we will be giving that money back to the ASB. But the second one that Stacy and Weston started, I can't speak to that. >> I I do think this [clears throat] has come to light. I think the pattern was they would they would spend money. They took a trip to Texas. They took a trip to LA football program and then they would have fundraising craft beads and get reimbured. That practice need to be reversed. They need to save up money and once they have it then spend it instead of spending it and hoping they raise that money to cover. >> That wasn't No, I was I went on that trip to Texas and
we had the money to cover that entire trip. >> So, I did a ton of that fundraising myself. So, we did have the money to cover that. That's not how that money was spent. There is still money from that account in that trip is the money that's in the IRS that we will be giving back. The second one is where the deficit comes from. >> I appreciate information, but what about the LA trip? >> That was not that was a year after me after our dissolved. >> Either way, we can't be $27,000 in a hole during lock season. It's got to be paid up front. >> Agreed. >> And so we don't want to put ourselves in position again. >> We already took care of that. I canceled any big trips for next year because
it was going red and they still wanted to purchase workout clears for workout clothes for the weight program. I'm like, no. So, I I've been over this nauseium. I apologize that it did go that way. It it would be nice with this to have a stipulation that even though the principal fund is paying the deficit in the ASB that when money is deposited in the ASB that that money is going to be reimbursed back to the district. So it's not like a $27,000 going into their account to make it neutral and then deposit the IRS money back in and now they're they're flush with money >> when other programs are fundraising a ton to pay for trips. Not saying they haven't fundraised. I get that money is held up, >> but if the district's going
to clear this and then they're going to put their money in, now they got $27,000 handed to them in that sense. I know we need to clear for the audit, >> but it is district money. You're right. We can pull principal funds, but usually site principal funds are for that site. >> So, my final principle here, I put in a lawn area. Now, last year I was here. You can spend it. is non-discretionary funds, but we're required to make sure that all our accounts ASP accounts are in the black before June 30th. >> Yeah. So, could there be a contract saying that that that football program, the $27,000 is going to go back to benefit whatever that money might have been used for on campus, you know, a program like that? >> I think the
foundation pointed to that. >> You're saying the money would go back into the principal's discretion fund. whether it goes back there and then the principal uses it there or there's some sort of something saying that hey when when $27,000 go back in this account that money is going to go back to benefit the school not go in that account and then they they got their bill wiped off basically >> you want to amend the motion to specify that we try to recover those funds and get them back into the position they were >> yeah I'll motion to approve and can we also have any another conversation on what the procedure will look like moving forward. >> We've already done all that. Jyn has been on top of it. >> I'm actually agreeing ASB manual for
approval next month. >> Great. >> So, we'll have some procedures in place. >> And I think it's also needs to be clear that there's nothing actually in the red. That's one big account. It just has different check marks for the accounts. Um, and so it's not it's a very minor audit check. It really is because there's nothing in the the red. There's hundreds of thousands of dollars in that account. There's just one line item. So, the overall account is not negative. I just most people don't understand that. >> Okay. >> With the caveat that it is one big pool of money. However, it is tracked. >> Yeah. >> Per club, per program. And so theoretically each program FFA floral so on and so on does have their own pot of money. So we do have
to treat it as a separate pot. Got it. >> So if if the preight principal want to take some money out of Bal the golf club and swim club and ASB student life student body approve that transfer, you could take some other clubs to cover this club. that wouldn't be fair to his other clubs. So even though technically overall we're not in the red, that line item is in the red. [cough] >> So a motion to approve. >> Are we approving the amendment? >> No. We're trying to get reimbured from it. >> It's already being done. >> Okay. You said >> well the transfer is what I'm requesting, correct? To transfer from the principal's funds, >> right? what you're talking about the money being held in an IRS account, fund, whatever, is a separate issue.
>> Yeah, but that's what we're working on is try to get that done. >> Yeah, if they want to pay it back. >> So, moved and second. All those in favor? >> I motion carries. >> 618 resolution to increase developer fees as provided in the level one developer fee study. which was u 2 cents for commercial and 12 cents [clears throat] for residential from what I see. >> Not a huge, but it would allow us to be at the same levels that all districts across the state of California are going to be raised up. >> Um I was going to ask the question, Brandt, could you speak to um the the language here? It says what's projected is 33% of the 9 million that we'll need at the end of like the 25 year or
within the next 25 years of needing modernization. What are the other funds that modernization would come from? But this is the developer fees would only cover 32%. >> I can touch on that. um in the next 25 years, you know, things will change, priorities will change, but to offset that uh difference, we would use modernization money from the state. Um we could apply for a bond. Um we could use deferred maintenance on the smaller projects. There's other, you know, avenues to offset that money. And if we were to do a bond, what's the timeline that we would need to put that up for the public? >> Um, I've talked to Brian about that. Um, we'd probably need it probably like a year in advance to prep for it. Do we have any idea of what
we would be asking for? >> Say that again. Do we have any idea of what we would ask for what the [cough and clears throat] amount that bond measure will be? So in t last time we passed the bond years ago we we had community input [clears throat] a survey told them what we thought we needed then we asked them what they thought we needed and come up to the consensus because if you don't have consensus on what you're being taxed on you know people aren't going to go for it >> right >> the the usually the company you hire to do your bond funding does the survey through all of the public questionnaires phone calls and they give the study to you. It doesn't that study doesn't cost us any money. The companies that
doing the bond pays for that. Fast college is doing one right now and it's a process. So like you said takes over a year to get all back together started. >> So if we want if it takes a year to get together and we want to put this on the ballot for 2028 and we would start this process next year, right? Well, we'd have to take it to the ballot in November of next year. And I just don't think it I think this is too further notice. >> She said it' be later than that. >> 2029. >> 298. >> Yeah. >> But then that would require us to start at 2027. Correct. >> So can we >> I can reach out to the study service that Joe talking about and see what their timeline is.
>> Yeah, let's do that. I want to make sure that we just fill in the gaps of what would be. >> So further sheet. Sorry. >> Can I get a motion on 618? >> Motion to approve. >> Second. All those in favor. >> I unanimous reports and comments. CSC CPA. Do they have a representative here? [clears throat] >> Don't see anybody responding. Superintendent. >> Yeah. Uh so it is difficult to conduct business. We only have three board members. I I understand that trying to follow the process legally. Um because believe me, we're under a lot of scrutiny right now and some things happened in the previous meeting because it was very chaotic. A lot of obscinity being thrown out. got a little distracted and we we didn't approve the HR report. I haven't got pulled
off it. So, I just want to make sure that things were done properly procedurally. Everybody can to speak. Um it's unfortunate and I saw a lot of emotion on both sides of the volleyball issue. Um I know the families used to be dear friends. It's sad to see. Uh so hopefully next month we'll come to a resolution either way and people start moving on. It's it's been difficult for my office the last few months because our main job is to educate students. That's our main job and it seems like it's all been athletics. Athletics, athletics, athletics, athletics and adult issues, adult issues, adult issues, not kid issues. I look forward to getting back to some kid issues. >> Thank you. >> Trustees, there's only three of us to talk. You have any comments you want
to make? Um I would echo the sentiment that um the last few months have been pretty challenging. Um as a board member, we receive a lot of feedback and we have to um kind of disseminate what's coming in. Um there's a lot of um relationships that we're not aware of, history that I'm not privy to. Um I grew up in a very small town, smaller than Cottonwood. I understand the dynamics um and how passionate families can be um because you guys care. You guys care about your community. you care about your kids. Um, and we're here to um to make the the best decision that we can with the information that we have. Um, uh, this has been a very humbling experience. can't say um that um that I agree with some of the tactics
and some of the feedback or emails that we've received. Um it's been challenging. I would ask that um you guys please remember that we are also human. We we have families, we have kids, um and we are trying to do the best that we can. Um we are elected officials and I think walking into this position, I didn't realize um I didn't think that this was going to be as highly scrutinized as it is. So, I'm learning. Um, I don't appreciate um when people make personal attacks or they involve my children. Um, so that's been upsetting and it's hard because our focus is to be here for the academics. I came into this position wanting to um make a difference to increase academic outcomes. Um, I am super um thankful that we were able to
pass a policy for um uh smartphones and um hopefully uh encouraging our kids uh to put down their phones and start connecting with other people who are in front of them and having that human connection and um feeling like they belong and without distraction in the school environment. Um those are the kinds of policies and things that I want to focus on being here. Um the the extracurricular activities are very important. Um but I also believe that we are we are transitioning these kids into a future that none of us adults have seen or experienced yet. this AI stuff that's taking off, things that are happening globally right now. Um, I feel like there's a lot at stake for our future generation, for these students, and um, sports give them a safe place and they
are very important. But um, I do uh, find myself awake in bed at night thinking about are they academically ready? Are they ready for um careers that may not exist in 10 to 20 years? I'd like to get back to focusing on that. Um my apologies for missing the special meeting. Um I was very sick and I'm still overcoming that. Um so yeah, thank you for being here tonight, for showing your support for your your students. Um, we do really genuinely appreciate your feedback and your attendance truly. [applause] >> How do I fall on that? She said everything I wanted to say. Uh yeah, it's definitely been my original goal when I joined was um for the um the education of the students. Um so all of the coaching and all of those issues have
just been really surprising to me. I had no idea that [clears throat] that would be so heated and but it is. It's because everyone does have a passion and especially when it's their kids. And um one of the things I wanted to say was that you need to believe in your kids overall. >> Mhm. >> They're going to be great no matter who the coach is. So put that faith in them. >> No. >> And also I'm surprised that all the board members aren't here um tonight. It would have been nice to have everyone to know kind of where everyone stands and that's why I decided to just abstain from the vote. Um, I I was kind of felt like I was like the monkey in the middle. So, I kind of want to feel
what everybody's feeling on the subject. And um, so I'm hoping as long as we have four board members, we can go through with things. We don't have to have that unanimous. >> If you have four, you're still just still need three yeses or three nos. >> Three yes. Okay. [clears throat] >> So, yeah, just it's still a learning process. So answer to a a point that was brought up, we do have a board policy. There are some exceptions, but we have a board policy that if you miss three consecutive meetings, you can be your position can be vacated. Uh we don't aren't at that point yet, but that is a board policy. So that's something we will have to look and see down the road. Other than that, I appreciate [clears throat] everybody being here.
I know it's long. Yes sir. >> Does that include special meetings? >> Pardon me. >> Does that include special? >> No, it does not. >> All right. Anybody else? Okay. Mean is journ.
