001Evening. I'm going to call the meeting to order at 5:01 p.m. Roll call. Amanda Buchanan, I'm here. Maria Akara, here. Anita Tucker here. Rick Raleigh is absent. Renee Longshaw here. All right. Thank you. Um Effie, could I get you to lead us in the pledge of allegiance? >> Thank you. >> Right hand over to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. All right, we are going to recognize Jaden Oli and Angelica Torres Chavez from High Desert Premier Academy, Ephine or Effie of Aila, Apple Valley High School, and Jillian Jill Rodriguez, Granite Hills High School, high school student representatives to the board of trustees for the 2025 2026 school year. Go. >> She's She's on senior
002time. >> Good Julian. >> There we go. Tonight, it's my pleasure as the superintendent to recognize some amazing students who have been at every board meeting this year to represent their schools and to share amazing things about everything going on in our high schools. I'm going to start with Jaden. Actually, I'm gonna wait, Jaden. I'm gonna do Angelica because she's not here. We're still gonna celebrate her. Okay. So, Angelica is a student who I met early on uh as a student adviser at High Desert Premier Academy. And I said to the principal, I think she's the right person to come to the board and represent. And so, at High Desert Premier Academy, we don't have a standardized um student body, so they have leadership. And Angelica is definitely a leader. She plans to go to
003VVC and then transfer to a university to study criminal law. And I feel like she's got just the personality, a little bit of sweet, a little bit of sass, and a little bit of fun in everything she does. We asked them to give us their favorite memory of high school. Some of them, not all of them. And for Angelica, her favorite memory will be the staff, the teachers, the counselors, and the administrators that made her feel accepted and helped when she needed it. And for um and I'll wait to talk about the principal and what her favorite memory of the students were, but um we had a pair. And so um I just would like to recognize the outstanding work that that Angelica did every month in coordination with Jaden. And so now Jaden, you
004come up for a few minutes. We're going to put you on the spot. Come on. So Jaden was part of the dynamic duo standing here at the podium. Sometimes Angelica left him, right? And you had to do it yourself. We always worried when Angelica wasn't here that it might not be the giggles in between and that we might not have quite as much fun as we were having when um the two of you were standing side by side. But what we learn quickly learned was that even by ourselves, when you were here by yourself, you still represented exactly as we hoped you would. The smiles were there, the laughter was there, the information to the board was always there. And so we are so proud of the leadership that you have represented to this district,
005representing High Desert Premiere every board meeting and then graduating, right? And now you're off to VVC where you plan to study I'm going to make sure I don't mess this up um business administration, right? And then you hope to transfer to a Cal State for your bachelors. We wish you nothing but the best in your endeavors. And we know that you're going to go far. There is no question about it. And so for that, Jaden's favorite memory is being pulled out of class to practice for the board meeting speech with Angelica. I can only imagine what that looked like. There had to be a lot of laughter, a lot of decisions about who was going to read what part. And yet, you guys did it every time without a hitch. And so, I just really
006appreciate you, and I know the board does as well. Okay, so we're going to clap. But we also got a favorite memory from their principal. Her favorite memory of the two of them. Three months ago, they were supposed to speak at a board meeting. She thought they were running late, but they weren't. Do you remember this? Mrs. Garcia >> had to call Angelica and then both picked up because they were together. So Jaden and Angelica were together. They were pranking Miss Garcia. And Miss Garcia said, "Where are you guys?" And Jaded responded, "Oh, sorry, Mrs. G. We're not going to make it tonight." Ouch. Her heart sank. She was went into a panic. And then they both Just kidding. Just kidding. And started to laugh. Since then, they're constantly to trying to give her a
007little heart attack. So I If you promise to stop by and give her a heart attack occasionally, every administrator needs their hearts to pump a little faster at times. and you want to keep her healthy. Okay. So, we appreciate you. >> Thank you. I'm gonna Jaden, hang on. I'm gonna ask that the board comes up as well so that they get to shake your hand. I just wasn't going to make them stand there at the beginning. And then we have a couple things. >> Okay. So, then if you just shake each You're going to shake everybody's hand. They're going to take a picture of you. This is a big deal because we appreciate you. >> Thank you. Yeah. Do you want a picture? Are we Yeah. Oh, sorry. >> One, two, three. I should have
008started with this and now I know that his parents are here. Um, I'd like to recognize Jaden's parents because without them and their support, we don't think he'd be sitting where he is today. And so, it always matters to me to recognize the parents who have helped raise such amazing kids. So, thank you. So, now I'm going to go in alphabetical order. So, it's not because I prefer one over the other because we know looking at you, Jill, but I'm not doing alphabetical for this. I'm doing alphabetical by high school. Okay. Okay. I'm going to sweep with you. sweep with you. Okay. Um Effie, would you come up? Effie always has his family here. I thank them often for their um support and uh the work that that we get to watch every every month
009at board meetings. And so, thank you as well. I'm doing something a little different this year with some of the representatives. And for Effie, I decided I wasn't going to take his brag sheet. I was going to use the letter of recommendation that I wrote for him for college. And so, um, I'm not going to read the whole thing, but I am going to read some portions of it so that you understand, um, what I see as the impact. Effie is not simply a strong student. He is a tenacious scholar and leader. Throughout his tenure at Apple Valley High School, he has pursued the most rigorous academic path available, successfully navigating and demanding schedule a demanding schedule that includes six advanced placement courses while enrolled concurrently in college courses. This challenging schedule requires tremendous discipline
010and except exceptional time management. He is motivated by deep desire to learn and his consistent commitment to the intellectual growth clearly demonstrates his readiness for the challenges of the next chapter of his life as a college student. I remember the day that he told me that his first choice for college was form after visiting New York. I knew that that was breaking his mom's heart because he'd be so far away. And what most people don't know is Eie has a twin. And so not only do they lose one in one year, they lose two. So that's for you. Yeah. Um just know that Effie is off to do exactly what he wanted to do. I held for several weeks the fact that he had gotten into form after being weightlisted for a period of time,
011right? And I did not tell the board because I wanted him to stand at this podium and tell them where he was going. And that was his news to share. He has done everything on the campus ASB clubs, worked at one of our schools as an ELOP support um provider and just amazing things. There's not enough time in a day to talk about these students and represent what they do, but we appreciate UF and all that you have succeeded in and what you have in the future to succeed in. Thanks. One, two, three. Miss Jilly, >> come on up. So many of you have heard the story about Jillian and my experience together over the years. I didn't say Jillian. I said Jill. Did I say Jillian? I never call her Jillian. I call her
012Jill. Jill. So I met Jill when she was a first grader and she helped me with a project and we were super successful at that project and I'll leave it at that. But at that age, I knew that Jill was going to uh knock people's socks off, that she was beyond her years of maturity. And so over the years, I've gotten to watch her grow up. And I remember seeing her her freshman year at the high school as a cheerleader and thinking, "Oh, yeah, that's perfect, too." So, I'm going to give you a little bit about Jill. for the past five years starting in eighth grade she has served on ASB and she's currently the line president and she has been a cheerleader and competitive dance stunt team. She's still standing which is a huge
013thing because stunt is hard. She helped coach Littles on the seinal cheer um team. She designed and made powderpuff jerseys for the juniors and seniors and then the seniors won. No, you didn't. I thought you told us you won. >> Okay. >> I didn't know anything because that's embarrassing. >> Oh, that's why I got you to tell us. Okay. >> You did. Yeah. Skipped it. Okay. But now we all know, right? >> She I'm sorry. Still love you. Um she did the morning announcements. I'd be at Granite and I'd share them and I'd think, "Oh, there goes Jilly." um host and spoke at all pep rallies, honors classes, and my favorite is that she survived four years of high school. I think for me the most powerful time I spent with Jill was during high
014school when she was a student adviser for superintendent advisory and while they'd be working on projects at tables, often I'd sit next to Jill and I would catch up on what was going on in her life. And she would always share with me, there's a lot of pathways in people's future. It's not just college, Mrs. Nelson, right? >> Yep. >> And that came out because you had some darling nails on one day. Do you remember? >> Yes, I do. >> Yeah, I do, too. And so, she shared that day that she wanted to be a cosmetologist. And I think the favorite thing that I can share right now beyond that is here's her why. Her future plans are cosmetology at Victor Valley College. She'd like to pursue making people feel better in themselves with a
015fresh cut and style. I have wanted to be a hairdresser since I was about eight and I am excited to continue with my dreams. I will always remember the people who shared with me into who I am, who shaped me into who I am. A special thanks to Miss Kelly for keeping me going and always supporting me. But here's the deal. You always make people feel important and you always make them feel special. So there is no doubt in my mind you are going to be the most phenomenal hairdresser and I hope that someday I get to sit in your chair. Thank you. >> Jill's parents are over on the side video videotaping. And because I met Jill at at um first grade, I also got to meet her parents at first grade because they
016were part of my project that year and I really appreciate them as well. Thank you. One, two, three. >> Let's let the >> Yeah, go ahead and sit down and let the high school students transition to the next um person that will be speaking to you next year. as I break the mic. All right, we're going to move on to the introduction of the 2026 27 student representatives. So for High Desert Premier Academy, um Jaden Oligi, you're up. Good evening, President Buchanan, esteemed board members, superintendent Nelson, executive cabinet, oh, Apple Valley Unified staff and educational partners. We had our grad night at Disneyland California Adventure on May 8th. I had the best time. But let me tell you, my feet were killing me after that. It felt great being able to enjoy my senior night
017with all my friends and people that felt like family. This will always be a night to remember. We're looking forward to a graduation and summer break. Everything's around the corner and it couldn't be more exciting. As we wrap up our final board meeting, we just want to thank the board, executive cabinet, and everyone at HGPA for giving us the opportunity to represent for our school. This experience has helped us grow in leadership, confidence, and public speaking, and it's something we'll always be grateful for. Thank you for your continued support and making sure our voices matter. We look forward to see to seeing you all all at our graduation. We'd like to introduce you to Michaela Coron Corona. Corona Corona will be our newest student representative for HTPA. >> Good evening. Good evening every I'm looking
018forward to getting to know all of you next school year and being able to share all the amazing things HDPA is doing on our campus. I hope you all have a wonderful summer and I will see you next year. Bye. >> And for the last time remember we're HDPA wherever student finds it. Granite Hills on Granite Hills High School. Jill Rodriguez. Good evening board members, executive cabinet, and attendees. for the final time. My name is Jill Rodriguez and I'm the GC president of Granite Hill High School. Although I was here I was just here a short time ago. So many things have happened final week up to the end of the school year. Final performances, sports banquetss and award ceremonies, yearbook signing, senior sunset, and final goodbyes. It's been a roller coaster of emotions for
019our students and our staff. Our state testing results are already in, and we're proud to report that our students performed well, helping us see Increases in English, math, and science. Our biggest jump in English seeing 8% increase from last year. Senior sunset is tonight, and students are looking forward to their last event before graduation. Our Cougars are having too much fun to let their season end. Softball has dominated the first three rounds of playoffs and made it to the semifinals. They will travel to Irvine High School this Saturday, this Saturday for the chance to advance to the Division 6 finals. Golf has CIF championships this week and finished fifth out of the 18 teams. Congratulations to a very successful season. Before I'd like before I close, I'd like to introduce someone who I know will
020do amazing an amazing job continuing continuing these updates next year. Taylor Rasque is hardworking, dedicated, and truly cares about what's going on at Granite Hills High School. I'm excited to see all the great things she'll accomplish next year. So, at this time, I'd officially like to introduce next year's Granite Hills High School GC president, Taylor Rasque. I'm Taylor and I am super excited to be here next year and I'm super excited to fill Jill's position even though I probably won't do as well. Um, and I'm super excited to give you guys all the newest updates about our beloved Granite Hills High School. Thank you. for the last time this year. As always, thank you for your continued support of Granite. Maroon and Gray lead the way. And Apple Valley High School, Effie Avula. All right.
021Good evening, Superintendent Nelson, President Buchanan, members of the board, and attendees. My name is Effie Avula, and I'm the ASB line president at Apple Valley High School. Before I begin, I want to take a moment to acknowledge something that makes tonight especially meaningful to me. This will be one of the last times I have the privilege of standing before you in this setting. As graduation gets closer, that reality has made me reflect on how much Apple Valley High School, our programs, and our students have meant to me. It's truly great to be back tonight to share everything happening on our campus because, as always, our Sunundevils have been busy, successful, and full of pride. So, let's jump right into our Sunundevil news. Here are a few final updates from our last few weeks at Apple
022Valley High School. On Friday, May 15th, AVHS held field day for students who maintained a GPA of 3.5 and above. Students spent the day outside celebrating their hard work with food trucks featuring everything from matcha and asai bowls to tacos and loaded fries along with inflatable activities and time spent together as a school community. On May 7th, we celebrated our annual athletic signing day. We recognized student athletes across multiple programs as they committed to continuing their athletic careers at the next level. Congratulations to Nathan, Brody, Ireland, Haley, Payton, Jaden, Brooklyn, Savannah, and my twin brother Benji who will be attending the University of Dallas to play baseball. The very next day, students with perfect attendance were recognized with tacos from East Tacos as a celebration of their dedication and commitment throughout the year. This season
023has also been filled with lots of recognition. Over the last two weeks alone, Apple Valley High School has celebrated awards for camp, math, graphics, construction, screen printing, sports medicine, auto, precision machining, computer science, culinary arts, athletics, and senior awards. Our students continue to accomplish incredible things, and it's been amazing seeing them receive the recognition that they deserve. Last night, our senior class held senior sunset. It was bittersweet getting to experience one final AVHS event with the people we have grown up with. Those are the moments we're going to miss the most. The small moments end up meaning everything. Some of our CCE Pathway seniors have also spent their final days connecting with child direct like play-doh, slime, painting. It's been such a beautiful reminder that even as we prepare to step into adulthood, there's value
024in holding on to joy. And tomorrow is my last day of high school ever. That sentence still doesn't feel real. But before I finish, I want to thank a few very special people. First, my family who has been here every single month listening to me speak. Thank you for every sacrifice, every late night, every ride, every word of encouragement, and every moment you believed in me before I believed in myself. I would not be standing here without you guys, and I love you. To the staff of Apple Valley High School, thank you to every teacher, administrator, adviser, and mentor who helped shape me into the person I am today. I carry your impact with me. Thank you for believing in students like me and helping us find our voices. And finally, thank you to Superintendent
025Nelson and our ABSD school board. The work you do for this community often happens quietly and behind the scenes, but students feel it every single day. Thank you for your leadership, your support, and your commitment to making schools better for all of us. And yeah, even you three over there on the end. You may not say much, but love you too. Now, I have the honor of introducing someone very special. Binland Shidik will serve as ASV line president for the upcoming school year. Bin Yep. Brin has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Our friendship started back in middle school through Vanguard's ASB and from the beginning I always felt protective over her. That only grew during years during our years together at AVHS. Brin is one of the
026most unapologetically herself people I have ever met. She's the definition of a leader. She leads with kindness, authenticity, and positivity. Every single day, she walks in ASB and proudly announces, "Hello, ASBers," and somehow manages to make everyone smile. Her positivity is contagious, her lead genuine, and her future is incredibly bright. I'm so proud of you, Binland, and I cannot wait to watch all the amazing things you accomplish. And with that, this wraps up my final speech here at the school district. But hey, I have one next week at graduation, and it's pretty fire. I'm so grateful for my time here. I'm grateful for every student, every teacher, every opportunity, and for growing up in a community that helped me raise me into who I am today. And before I go, there's one final thing I
027really, really don't want you to forget. Sunundevil pride is contagious. >> Good evening, Superintendent Nelson, President Buchanan, members of the board, and attendees. My name is Brendan Chidik and I'm currently honored to serve as Apple Valley High School's junior class vice president and I'm incredibly hon grateful and excited to share that I'll be serving as the ASB line president for the upcoming school year. This this opportunity means so much to me and I'm truly thankful for everyone who has supported me, believed in me and guided me through moments when I doubted what was possible. I would especially like to thank my mom for always encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone, try new things and always give my best effort. I would also like to thank God for every blessing and opportunity I have
028been given along the way. I'd also like to give a special thank you to Effie for always pushing me to be the best version of myself. I'll never forget when being a nervous seventh grader scared to join ASB and having someone truly believed in me and encouraged me every step of the way. That support has meant more to me than words can express. I as I begin this new chapter, I'm excited for the opportunity to help lead our school student body and create fun, successful, meaningful year for all students. My goal for this upcoming year is to help everyone make the most of their experience, give their best effort, and have the best year yet. Thank you so much. And remember, sub noble pride is contagious. >> At this time, board members and the superintendent
029are welcome to thank student representatives. Renee Longshore. >> Um, yes. Good evening and uh a special goodbye to our representatives as they find their next steps into the next. Jaden, um Jilly and Effie, you guys have been phenomenal. So, thank you for coming and sharing your gift of oral speaking with us. And I would just like to encourage you guys to keep it up because you're all very natural at it. So, well done. And then I'd also like to extend a welcome to Michaela, Taylor, and Brendalyn. We look forward to seeing you guys here every month. Very exciting. >> Anita, it seems like we were just here and you were all being introduced last year and this year has gone by so fast. Um, but I must say that all of you have given incredible
030reports of the schools and that's been the best part of these meetings. Thank you so much. I wish you all the best. Welcome to our our new people. I'm excited for next year. I know you guys are going to rock it. And all of our seniors that are leaving, you're going to make such a difference. Thank you. Maria. >> Well, how do you follow that? Um, thank you so much to our students who are our speakers. Um, we sort of look forward to your feedback of what's happening at your individual schools. it gives us a window into what you go through on a daily basis and the joy you bring when you present to us. You know, the giggles I'm going to miss um the fun jokes I'm going to miss, but above all, I'm
031going to miss the human beings you guys have become and I look I really look forward to hearing from you. I'm going to share a personal story about my daughter who graduated from Apple Valley School District in 2000. and she sent me a picture of her friends that she went to middle school, elementary school, and now they are all grown up and they met up in New York. And in that letter, in that picture, she says, "Appo Valley was great for me. I want to make sure that when you walk out of here, you know that Apple Valley will continue to be here for you when you return. And you're always welcome to visit us. Um if I'm not sitting here, whoever is sitting here, introduce yourself as one of the speakers and I think
032they will appreciate seeing you. Uh Jilly, I have already told you I'm booking my next eyelash appointment with you. Um so I hope uh when you are done you let me know so I can you know surrender my eyes to you. Um and the rest of you, I really look forward to a great year. Look forward to what the future holds, but never forget where you came from because you are a testimony of what Apple Valley is. And when others are acting up, just remember where you came from. Congratulations for all of you to all of you moving forward. And welcome to the new ones coming in. And we can't wait to hear what you have to offer. Thank you so much. Yes. Um, thank you guys so much for all the time that you
033guys have put in over the year coming here to share with us um your passion in everything that you share that's going on at your school sites. Um, I will miss uh hearing from you guys, but then also running into you guys randomly around the town because you guys are everywhere. um with Jill even in Irvine one time. So um just thank you so much. And then welcome to Michaela, Taylor, and Brenlin. I have to say if I was staring at you, Taylor, I apologize. I looked up and I was like, she looks so familiar. And then I spotted your mom and I was like, that's it. So welcome. It'll be great next year. Um but we will miss the three of you. Well, four with Angelica. Um so thank you guys. All I can
034say is in 23 years there's been a lot of kids like you that have come through and every year I think there is no way the next group can top the group that we've had and yet somehow you walk in the door and you knock our socks off. And so I just want to say um keep going. I feel like my future is in good hands because I will age out here fairly soon. And when I do, I want great people in great roles taking care of all the old people that are going to need care. And you guys have those skills and abilities. And we just really appreciate you. So, go do it. Go make it happen. Um Michaela, I look forward to to getting to know you. I promise I won't pick on
035you. I I love just to learn about what um makes you go and what drives you. and Taylor. Um, you don't have big shoes to fill. You have your shoes to fill. So, you don't have to be Jill Jilly. You have to be you. And we want to know who you are. So, go go be that president that we learn is different than the previous one. And I know you're going to knock our socks off, too. And then finally, Brenlin, I when I walked over and Effie introduced us, I'm like, "Wait, I know you." And again, like first grade. I've known her since she was little. And so I feel like this is going to be wonderful for us to to get to know you as an older student and watch you um shine as
036well. So thank you all and welcome to the news. Okay. And now it's time for Mr. Sloer student recognition. I got up here like three times to do this. You can't tell. I'm a little bit excited. I'm love this night. Thank you all so much for being here. And if I could have ask the board and superintendent to join me at the front. Um Mr. Conrad there, Mr. Schulenberg, actually superintendent if you'll go down at the end. Yep. Thank you. And a little bit of logistics. We're recognizing tonight students accomplishments in a great variety of of different endeavors at school, science, the arts, career and technical skills, all kinds of things that make our schools wonderful. And so, um, when we call you up, we'll do that in groups representative of the category. And we're
037going to ask you to kind of make your way over here toward the American flag side of the of the podium or the uh board dis. You'll get your certificate from either uh one of the principles or Mr. Conrad and make your way then across the front, shake the hands of the board members who will love to congratulate you and we'll kind of move you down towards the California flag to Mr. Schulenberg and we'll get your groups uh pictures down there on that side. We'll keep things moving pretty fast. If there's some groups that are a whole group, I'll go quickly through the name uh clap at the end and then u if there's individual awards, we'll do that one at a time. So, we're super happy you're here. Thank you for crowding into this
038room. What a great reason to be kind of uh side by side together to celebrate students. And I'll just apologize in advance. My back will be to you, but I'll be reading the names and so we'll listen carefully. And so, here we go. Okay. The first award category is the steam fair. It's our science fair and all the excitement that goes with that. And so these are students who um they are grand prize winners. And so from Mariana School, Nia Richards, plastic is bad for the ocean. Come on up, Nia. From Vanguard, Damen Varela, Glycomic Fruit MATRIX from Phoenix Academy. Kaani Martinez and Alcanza Riyotti driving on sunshine. Another Vanguard pair, Samuel Alvarez and Mason Mora. Rotomatic a Sandia team, Aiden Stamon and Jaden Shetler. Mag Lev train. Nice job. Also, Sandia, Samantha Sanchez, and
039Victoria Olivas, Gizmo the Parrot. And our last Steamfare grand prize winner, Lesie Aino Figueroa from Mariana Academy, a decorative vintage truck. The next category is our state seal of civic engagement. And this is a really tough award to earn. It requires not only a test on the basics of American government and constitution, but then a presentation to a panel and a year-long typically project to demonstrate your awareness of civic engagement. We had two win two awardees this year. They are Emanuel Rodriguez Serrano from Granite Hills High School and Christian Santana from High Desert Premier Academy. Our English language student of the year, students who demonstrate incredible facility with language learning and work really hard to gain this mastery of English. from Apple Valley High School. Brianna Alvarez from Granite Hills High School. Jennifer Balwena Cruz
040also from Granite Hills. Muhammad Amiri and from High Desert Premier Academy, Katherine Colin. Our next category is our Skills USA state gold medalist. You've been hearing about this all year as they've gone from regionals to state and now on to nationals. And so we're sending a good number of these students to um Atlanta this summer. And the other neat thing this year is for the first time we're sending um middle school students as well. So we had middle school students participate and they just did fantastic. Many of them earning gold at the state level. And so mixed in in kind of order of their competition from Napa Valley High School, 22nd Elevator Story gold medal winner Josiah Ford from Sandia Academy. CO2 dragster and design. Allison Arana >> for Granite Hills High School. a pair
041who will represent their school as the chapter excellence award winners Brianna Canela and Natalie Nurano in the precision machining pathway from Apple Valley High School. Gold medal winner in the CNC twoaxis turning program. Braden Bean and in the category of CNC programmer, Brian Wheeler. State gold medal winner from SittingBull Academy in the Skills USA Creed. Colin Kamiyama from Granite Hills High School. Customer service. Robin Jones from Apple Valley High School. Graphics Imaging Sublimation. Trevor Quick from Granite Hills Health Occupation Portfolio. Alina Alina Danel Ooa from Apple Valley. Introductory advertising design. Jacqueline Estrada Acasta from Citybull Academy job interview. Khloe Kim from Apple Valley High School job skill demonstration. Nico Day a team from Granite Hills High School going on gold medal winners in mechatronics. Michael Po Dexter and Justin Vasileno from Apple Valley High School.
042Medical assistant. Jesse Flores Newman in photography from Apple. Kaden Malter from Apple Valley High School. Pin design. Olivia Ashen Brener from Apple Valley High School, practical nursing, Savannah Ward. And I can't resist mentioning that from Map Valley High School, Effie Avala will be going to represent us in prepared speech. Along with those award winners, we have had the honor of a a Granite Hills High School student who represented his school and our district as an officer for Skills USA. He was the reporter for Skills USA and held that title all year. He spent time in Sacramento. He worked hard as part of an this statewide organization and will be there in Atlanta as well, I believe. He has been an outstanding ambassador for Skills USA both regionally in our district in Southern California across the
043state. Big round of applause for Matthew Lurley. Moving on to FFA results. We are about 364 days from the fair last year or just is just about to get started I think tomorrow. And so these are actually last year's winners because we don't net yet know who this year's uh showmanship awards will go to. But these students are still um in the program working hard and we want to recognize because by the time they won these awards we had already passed this event. And so for the 2025 fair, first place in showmanship and then a second place market hog. Cash Cortez Nunees, first place cattle showmanship, which we tried to do and it was very complicated and they're large. And second place prospect cattle, Satie Winkhart. also first place cattle showmanship and second place master
044showmanship. Trinity Cook, first place market calf, Samantha Walker, first place market lamb. Brook Simmons, an equestrian award, High Point English Pleasure, Parker Leu. Several awards for this student, reserve champion, rabbit, meat and meat pen, first place prospect cattle, second place breeding lamb, Saur and Winkhart. and first place showmanship and advance to master showmanship, Jaden Baby. Moving on to some of our Mountain Desert Career Pathways local competitions. These competitions are for students to participate locally against other career and technical programs in these various skill demonstrations. for digital design from Apple Valley High School. A team of two, Marley Fick and Macy Gibson in the area of welding local competition held at Victor Valley College. the first place team and I'll read the names and make it very difficult for the those handing out awards to get
045them there. But um this team um continues a a trend of excellence. I don't know that any other team has come close. They're just dominant. They are from the Apple Valley High School welding program. Damian Adams, Jose Alcala, Aiden Black, Drake Carlson, Justin Enos, Brandon Fischer, William Fudge, William Langley, Riley Latrace, Kingston Monson, Jackson Perry, and Addison Wright. There's also an individual welding competition. As that team makes their way up, there's an individual competition and so chosen from all the students who go um for their individual skill. We also had a first place winner for the whole competition and that was also Drake Carlson. Another local competition is in the area of computer science. There's something called a hackathon. And the hackathon brings students together and they're actually in mixed teams and they have to
046work hard together to solve a problem. Winners from our schools include from Granny Hills High School an individual award to Franco Ortega. And one of the on the winning team was a student from Apple Valley High School, Preston Kitchen. Remember that these competitions are judged by local industry experts and often they try to get our students jobs right there and then. They're just so skilled. Similar in medical overall MDCP medical competition first place student was from Malfell High School, Mackenzie ESL. And in this case, the team competition was won by the Granny Hills High School team of Brianna Canela, Matthew Lurley, Ever McShane, and Kayla Kaye Oriana. Another competition we love to go to, and I would love to be a judge, is Sweet Genius, where they make pastries. Overall winner, the Apple Valley High
047School team of four, Alejandra Kal Guzman, Naveen Corona, Khloe Pina, and Leilani Roacho. In the area of the arts, there's also the MDCP MDCP photography competition. Absolutely beautiful images produced this year. best in show for the area. We all who went to the film festival got to see it displayed was from Alpha Valley High School, Bri McGlinty in construction. Several teams competed, many from uh local schools, several from our schools. the first place overall of all the teams that were there. Team of four from Apple Valley High School. Walker Moore, Diego Chira Sanchez, Ryan Mayo, and even Ivan Ramirez. The MDCP film festival allowed us to award students who participated in in the area of competitive capture and they were actually at these events. So the students are sent to the welding competitions to the
048construction competitions to take video. They take video and they edit it into these short films. The winner of that competitive capture was the Grant Hills High School team of Ahmad Deset Orcelli Garcia, Justin Grantley, Anthony Grove, Jennaline Negreti, Matthew Perez, and Aiden Reynoso. And while they're getting their awards, I'll just mention that Ahmad was also part of the crew that made the film for Shock Graduation, and it was fantastic. One of the best Shock Graduation films we've ever seen in pin design from the Mountain Desert Career Pathways Competition. Um, similar to her success in Skills USA from Napa Valley High School, first place, Olivia Ashen Brener. Switching gears away from career and technical for a moment. At the county level, we had our spelling bee here. The spelling bee is a terrifying and difficult thing
049to do, but we had a student who not only won here, but went on and took sixth place at the county level. Clarissa Viscara. At the Apple Valley Center for Innovation, we have students who are the lead explainers. That means that they're responsible for a small group of of their peers, making sure that they're organized, in place, and ready to support those family members and students who come for those evening events. And they are just wonderful dosent. And more importantly, they learn leadership. And so this year's lead explainers who are um I think all seniors leaving us after having done this in some cases for a number of years. Christian Canola MSUS Isabelle Fryjo Round of applause for Gray. They always save the day. Let's go back to Ender Glickler. Pedro. Yeah. Pedro Gonzalez. Fabian
050Jimenez, Evan Sobel, Urezi Gonzalez, Nicole Sanchez, and Michael Po Dexter. This next team is a late edition. We just got word that this team participated in something called the Mojave Water Agency problem solvers competition. Another regional competition. This group of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students won that competition. and their short their solution to the problem they were presented and a short film about it is actually going to is um already aired and we'll be available um we'll put a talking to the teacher um who put that together and and we're going to get that video available for folks but this is just an a wonderful accomplishment from this group of problem solvers who work together to do this and so I'm going to read the names of these six students from all from Sandia
051Academy Ardon Solano Gage Castanada Satriana Fontaine, Vance Nyall, Bradley Roach, Paneda, and Ariana Valdez. What an accomplishment. Moving to the area of art and artistic expression. for Assemb Assemblyman Tom Lackeyy's annual student art contest from Phoenix Academy. First place winner, beautiful artist Alcanza Riyadi. In the mixed media division of the same competition, first place winner from Map Valley High School, Ariana Aoyo, Serenity McDaniel, and Jaden Cabin. Moving on to the Sanardino County Superintendent of Schools Young Artist Gallery. Another image uh best in show for painting. Uh it was a painting called the diptick of peacocks. Alcanza Riyadi. We have some Yes, she has to walk back and forth. That wasn't well done. Also, I apologize for that. for ceramics. The following four students from all from Appali High School, I believe, Sunonny Landeros, AJ Jackman,
052Shayla Kim, and Angela Toro. From Mr. Long Necker's class in drawing and painting category, Savannah Aguilera, Emily Ibara Salgado, and Lily Lopez. And in mixed media category, Kaden Malter, Aaron Romero, and Joseé Lara Aronda. back to digital media in the directing change film competition which is a statewide competition where students are encouraged to create a short film like a public service announcement about mental health and suicide awareness in our region. The third place team um across the state is Penelopey Netto, Riley Windust, and Josephina Olivas. Streets Art Safe Film Competition for Mount Valley High School. The winning team, Olivia Nutter, Kinsley Hullbrook, and Laya Lovado. And for their PSA about weariness behind the wheel, Braden Henry and Marley Arza. Not only did the construction team participate in local competition in Skills USA, but in a
053regional construction industry education foundation design build competition, the Apa Valley High School team went down and participated in a competition where students are put to the task of building um typically a small building or shed. This team won two distinct awards and it's really kind of neat. They won the team safety award which I know the carpenters union and other folks are very strongly um in support of but also overall they were the people's choice winner for this competition. And so this a large team of outstanding young uh folks. They are Melanie Aragon Naro, Diego Chira Sanchez, Nicholas Haynes, Christopher Lopez, Dominic Luke, Walker Moore. That's awesome. Ryan Nevin and Jacqueline Quantero. Ivan Ramirez and Christopher Starling. and Uzio Viscara and Saurin Winkart. I think they're all here, too. That's awesome. Well done. And if
054folks, if you haven't seen it, this construction industry education foundation website will show you their uh what they built. It's fantastic. Finally, we had four students who served all year as ambassadors to their peers, to industry partners who had when we had meetings, they they met with you. Anytime we had a public event, they were there as kind of the face of CTE. And these students just were tasked with quite a bit. And so it's just a lovely time to recognize their excellence. They are outstanding young people. And so we have uh two from Apple Valley High School and two from Granny Hills. The two from Apple Valley High School are Taylor Ford and Abigail Nicholson. And from Granite Hills High School, Alina Daneloo Choa and Gyro Suarez. Hiro, thank you. Good job. >> Thank
055you so much for this participating in this event. Thank you to all the families. Good evening and welcome
060to everyone who is joining us today. Uh we represent you as we work to make decisions at direct ABUSD to properly educate and support children entrusted to our care. I would like to begin with giving a shout out to our amazing classified and certificated staff. You are the hands and feet that show up with heart for the work you do all year transporting and guiding students safely to school sites where they're able to learn in clean and properly supported spaces. You watch out for them, feed them, guide them, and provide a succinct foundation of learning every day. Thank you. As we finish up these last days of the 2526 school year, I want to also acknowledge those who are finishing up their first year of school in AUSD or their last, our TK, kinder and
06112th grade. Congratulations to the students, their parents, families, caregivers, and the community that support them every day. Your hard work is admirable, and we have confidence knowing you will continue to do great things. Thank you to school sites who welcome us to your campuses even as you wrap up the school year. Sandia Academy, it was such a joy celebrating with your kinder students as they received awards. I met a young man who was so excited. It was his first award. Apple Valley High School students and staff, thank you for inviting me to celebrate student achievement at your sped senior lunchon. The joy and pride was contagious. and Granite Hills High School Theater. The genuine love and support you have for one another is inspiring. Thank you for including me. I'd like to give a special
062shout out to seniors as they participate in Senior Sunsets Apple Valley High School last night and Granite Hills High School tonight. I cannot wait to join them in congratulating you and High Desert Premier Academy on a job well done at your upcoming graduations. This year has been a lot and I know many are simultaneously taking deep breaths, stepping forward and reflecting back. Reflection is important to cultivate a growth mindset. Many in the community were hopeful this year when the district organized meetings at each school site to gather input from stakeholders regarding where budget reduction should be made. Families, staff members, and community members took the time to attend and share thoughtful feedback. A consistent message emerged from those meetings. Protect classrooms and school sites from cuts whenever possible. Despite strong community feed feedback calling for
063cuts to be made away from the classrooms and school sites, the reductions that were ultimately approved directly impacted students. Hours were cut for school site staff who maintained help maintain the student safety and for employees who support literacy instruction. Community members voiced support for exploring reductions at the district office level. Yet those options were not presented to the board for consideration. Instead, the board voted to approve cuts that will be felt by most students and teachers at the school sites next year. This board needs to take a detailed look at the special reserve fund for capital outlay and staff. Other districts boards have approved steps to save funds and now generate millions extra revenue by collecting interest on savings, making money rather than overspending it. We need to change because despite all the pain we've
064gone through this year, we are not out of the woods yet. Staff working directly with students should not have to lose hours, positions, and insurance, lack support, or leave in droves for retirement or better compensation elsewhere. Our students should not be facing inequity, lacking stability, or denied access to programs. Children deserve better than this. Most of the cuts this year came from getting rid of vacant positions and scaling back over encumbered funds. any future cuts will hurt worse. So, we need to roll up our sleeves and get to work. Be proactive for the good of our community because in the end, it's not about our differences, but the opportunity we have to make a difference in the lives of kids every day. As you look to summer break, I wish you well and pray you
065find the time and space you need to return strong because there is still much to do. Thank you, >> Anita Tucker. >> Good evening. I know last month I mentioned the many celebrations and recogn recognitions that we have during May, but I did miss National Language Speech Pathologist Day, which we celebrated on May 18th. And I truly appreciate our language and speech pathologists. They do so much uh each and every day uh with our students and we wish we had a lot more of you. Um I'd also like to acknowledge and thank our classified employees again as this is their week. It's dedicated to all our hardworking individuals who are there to support our students, family, and staff each and every day. We appreciate all you do and I was really happy to be able
066to attend the county awards for our our outstanding classified employees who were honored. Mr. Cliff Ledbet, Miss uh Jennifer Amada, Mr. Jonathan Silva, and Ms. Rachel Yokum. Congratulations. On May 13th, I was able to attend the longevity awards for our teachers, counselors, and classified staff and administrators at Desert Nles Elementary School. I truly wish I could have attended all of these awards to thank our staff for the many years of love and dedication they have given to the students and families of Apple Valley. On Friday, May 15th, I was really blessed to be able to attend Granite Hills Choirs choir's last show of the year. The theme was heroes and villains. And we were told that although we love to cheer for the heroes, the villains actually have the best songs. These students were beyond
067amazing. They poured their hearts and souls into their performances and their hard work and talent showed. A huge thank you to Mr. Churchill and Miss Inonosa for their outstanding leadership and dedication to our students. It was amazing to see former students join in and sing. Families who have been students in our choir program at Granite for I believe 12 years. I love seeing the encore singers perform and I know they did an incredible job at their competition this weekend. I also was excited to get a little preview of what the choir will be performing for graduation. You'll be so excited. Uh I was really blessed and happy to uh see the kindergarteners at Sandia receive their trimester awards. These students were so great. Their enthusiasm in supporting each other, their listening skills, and you could
068see the hard work that their teachers and their parents have done to work with these students, and they were definitely ready to be first graders. I was honored to be able to be part of the celebrations for our students. And a truly big thank you to Miss Watt and Mr. Area uh the teachers, staff, and parents for their dedication and hard work this year. I enjoyed the beautiful lunchon for our special education students at Apple Valley High School. The students were enjoying amazing food and a plethora of candy. That was a highlight for the students and I think for the staff as well. Thank you so much to Miss Spini and her incredible team for their dedication and hard work supporting our students. Also, a big congratulations to Dr. Bell who will be receiving her
069doctorate tomorrow and also to Dr. Harrison on his doctorate too. Congratulations. Next week is graduation. This is the culmination of 13 years of planning, hard work, fun, and excitement, and looking forward to what the future holds. I'd like to thank all our staff, teachers, counselors, classified employees, and administrators for the incredible work that you do in preparing our students for this milestone. And I'm not just talking this year. You've been doing this since preschool, TK, kindergarten, elementary school, junior high, and high school. And each one of you is a layer that contributes to this. Parents and families, we appreciate all you do to support your students. To our students, congratulations. You have achieved the first major milestone in your education, not the last. And we are proud of all of you. We are proud of
070all you have accomplished and know that you will continue to shine always carrying a small part of Apple Valley Unified with you and I wish everybody a very happy, restful, restorative and fun summer. So, thank you very much, >> Maria. >> Well, thank you so much. Um I don't usually have a prepared speech. Uh but I can tell you that I am really proud uh to say that I'm a product of Apple Valley. Uh I have seen uh so much growth and every year I see even more growth. Uh but I need to start from uh somewhere to thank all the people who have made an impact in my life. Um, I I'm going to start with the transportation because they're the first to pick up our kids in the morning and they're the last
071to say goodbye to our kids. Uh, thank you so much for the work you do uh to make sure our kids make it from home to school and back home. I thank you for our um cafeteria workers to make sure that our children are receiving healthy food uh when they come to school and to give them those midday snacks um because we know that that always can tide them through. Thank you to our crossing guard that makes sure that our kids make it across uh the busy streets and um to school and the busy streets back home. Um and to keep them safe on campus. Thank you to the office staff because they're the f first face that face we see when we enter any school and they let us know what they feel or
072how they feel and they are very welcoming when we arrive at their schools. Uh thank you to the administrative team uh because they're the they will make sure that everything is working well as as any welloiled machine is. Um sometimes we don't see them u but we want to be sure that we show gratitude where gratitude is due. Um thank you to the teachers. Um when you start out every school year you get we get the raw material at the end of the year. You give us a polished set of good kids. Uh, and we thank you for the work that you do. Above all, thank you to the parents because without you, we won't be seeing all these kids in our schools. I'm glad that you trust our ch trust your children to us
073and we'll continue to do the best we can. We are not making huge promises because every child comes with a special gift and we just have to find ways to meet their needs. And um and I thank the fellow board members uh because it's been a journey this this um academic year. we have had some growing pains and I do hope that we will continue to grow and um and get to a place where we we really um uh can have a real nice conversation. It's just still a journey and we no apologies. Um we continue to have that journey because usually when you start a new relationship with each person is trying to figure out the other. Um and then thank you to the um district team. Um because uh if they don't come
074in the morning, we don't know where we're going. Um so we thank you all from the district team and above all um we thank ourselves for the work we continue to do and um I look forward to a great year and and I'm filled with gratitude for the students that we have found amongst us. You saw the students who spoke in a five o'clock hour. Uh those students are uh what I call uh the top of the line uh because the schools chose them to come and speak to us every board meeting and for that I say thank you. As we near the end of another school year, I first wanted to extend heartfelt congratulations to our graduating seniors, as well as all of our students promoting to the next chapter in their educational journey.
075These milestone moments represent years of hard work, growth, perseverance, and the support of dedicated families and staff. Earlier this month, I had the privilege of attending the San Frernardino Valley chapter of the Lynx Scholarship Gala in Ontario for that's that was my third time. The Lynx has a long and impressive history of supporting students uh in our region through scholarship opportunities and community service. And it's always inspiring to be in a room that celebrates educational achievement in such a meaningful way. I was especially proud to see one of our own and he was here earlier tonight, um, Granite Hills High School senior Justin Grantley and he was recognized with more than $3,000 in scholarships that morning. It's always exciting when our students are celebrated beyond our district walls. um Miss Apara and Superintendent Nelson and
076I had the opportunity to take a photo with Justin um and state superintendent Tony Thurman to mark the occasion and I later text that photo directly to Superintendent Thurman so that he could have that special moment as well. It was a wonderful morning highlighting student success. I also had the pleasure of attending the band concert at Sitting Bull Academy. Not only was the music fantastic, but I have to say it doubled as a bit of a comedy show in the best possible way. The students and especially one staff member who just could not hit her mark on the right beat were entertaining. It was on purpose, but were entertaining, talented, and clearly enjoying themselves, which made the evening especially memorable. Thank you to the students and staff who made that event so enjoyable. I also
077attended the shock graduation uh last week and I have to say that this was the best one yet from all the ones that I've made it to now. I loved seeing all the representation from so many of our schools um coming together to celebrate those students. I also appreciated that parents were awarded a certificate for completing the parent program. So, thank you to the Police Activities League and all of the volunteers that make this happen. And finally, I'm very much looking forward to our three graduation ceremonies next week. They are a powerful reminder of why we do this work. As we head into the final stretch, I want to thank our staff for the incredible work they have done all year long and wish our students the very best as they finish strong. I hope
078everyone enjoys a well-earned and restful summer break. I concur with everything that everybody has said about the wonderful time of year and all the recognitions. Um it is especially bittersweet when I um have the privilege I was invited to the links I've never attended before but um with Justin receiving the uh scholarship I think they reached out to me and invited me um and I was honored to be part of it. Justin has served as a student adviser from Granite Hills High School for quite some time. Um stood at the podium when he was a Yakaloma student and did a report as a student um at that time. And to just see who he has become and what he wants to be. He wants to be a school psychologist someday. So, he's off to um
079Cal State Northridge and I see um some amazing things coming back to our community in the future. There's a lot to be celebrated um all of the seniors, all of the work that has gone into the last 13 years of their education. Some of them started with us in preschool. And I was struck sitting at the uh well standing at the um special ed senior recognition at Apple Valley High School because they had reached out to staff members and asked them to um nominate students for awards and I heard the name Kimberly Abundes and um she had nominated a student. She's pared educator in our system. And I first met Kimberly in the lobby of this building when she was three years old with her mom who was in um Spanish speaking and her older
080sister who was a high school student at the time and translated for us and we got her enrolled and um from that day forward I've watched that little girl grow up inclusive of Brenda Abundes um her sister who is now an employee in our school district and has been um since the time she left high And I say that because um we are fortunate in this community, specifically Apple Valley, that our graduates often come back, live in the community, and serve our school district. And I think that's the legacy. So, thank you, >> Kylie. Do we have any public comments? >> We do. We have one card this evening. >> Okay. As provided on our public comment card, speakers are requested to limit comments to a maximum of three minutes. If more than one person
081wishes to speak on the same topic, subsequent speakers should limit their remarks to new information only. Public comments shall be limited to a maximum of 20 minutes per item. Holly Black Awesome. All right. Hello. Good evening, um, board trustees and cabinet members. Um, I just have something I need clarification on because I'm confused and some other staff members have come to me um for clarification and I cannot give it to them because I don't know. Um, so it goes back to that March 5th board meeting that I know the um, minutes of have been kind of a contentious item, but I know when Trusty Longore I know so I never look at the minutes afterwards. I just look at the agendas. I didn't even think to look at the minutes. Um but when Trusty Longore
082brought that up that the um the item about the vote of confidence for the superintendent was brought up again and it wasn't supposed to because it was it failed the first time on March 5th or is that right? Yeah. Um so then I went home and did some research because I like I said I didn't understand. So, I'm like, you know, 11:45 at night, um, trying to figure it out. Um, but it seemed like in the video, um, at the time stamp of 6 hours 31 minutes, give or take a few seconds, um, it was read and then voted on um, at 6:39 and then tabled during discussion. like people were still talking and then it it seemed to kind of be tabled um during that discussion. But then I did go back and look
083at the minutes and I saw that in there it says that it was read and there was a motion and a second and it was voted on and the vote was 22 and it failed. So um that's again my understanding that then if it fails then it's not like t it's not supposed to be brought up again. I don't know the logistics of that. Um, so I just that's I'm not here to like argue or take a side or whatever. I literally do not know the answer to this and I'm being asked. So, um, I'm here to get the clarification for myself and the other AVUSD employees who have asked about it. Um, and so if there can be clarification on that or if there is a timeline or if I missed something, um, please
084let me know because like I said, I just don't know what's going on. So, I just am trying to be better educated. Like I tell my kids, ask questions when you don't know. So, thank you for your time. And if you want to respond via email or contact me at any time, um my information is easy to find. So, thank you. All right. Discussion action session. It is recommended that the board of trustees discuss and take action on the following items. Number one, approve the certificated and classified personnel actions as listed. Can I get a motion? >> So moved. >> I'll second. Any discussion? We will be taking a vote via roll call. Mrs. Longshore >> I. >> Mrs. Tucker >> I. >> Miss Apara >> I. >> Mrs. Buchanan I. Item two, approve the
085recommendations for requested leave as noted. >> So move. >> Second. >> Any discussion? Mrs. Longore. >> I. >> Mrs. Tucker. >> I. >> Miss Akara. >> I. >> Mrs. Buchanan. I. >> Number three. We approve the recommendation of the administrative hearing chairperson effective immediately. Hold on one second on Okay. To approve the recommendation of the administrative hearing chairperson effective immediately on EXP number 22 2025-26 and stip number 6 202526 through stip number 8 202526. Can I get a motion? So move. >> Second. Any discussion? We will be taking a vote via roll call. Mrs. Longshore. I. >> Mrs. Tucker. >> I. >> Ms. Akara. >> I. Mrs. Buchanan. I. All right. The consent agenda. It is recommended that the board of trustees consider approving a number of agenda items as a consent list. Consent items
086are routine in nature and can be enacted in one motion without further discussion. This procedure conserves meeting time for a full discussion of significant issues. The consent items to be approved in one motion are 1 through 35. Can I get a motion? I'll make the motion. Can I get a second? I'll second it. And when do we pull it? When do we pull? >> Well, you wanted to pull it. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Which ones would you like to pull? >> I'd like to pull item 11. >> Are there any others? >> Uh, yes. I'd like to pull items 1 6 8 9 13 14 18 19 25 and 26. Can I get a motion to approve items 2 through five? Number seven, 15 16 17 20 through 24 27 through 35. >> So second
087>> Oh, that's true. Because they didn't pull it before we Yeah. >> Is that okay? >> Yeah. All right. Let's go ahead and vote on the original motion which was made by myself and seconded by Maria which was to approve them all. So if you do not want to approve them all you would vote no. >> So Mrs. Longshore. >> No. Mrs. Tucker just for clarification this is to go to a motion with the pulled ones. Correct. >> Then no. and Miss Akara. >> No. >> Okay. And I'll vote no as well. All right. Now, can I >> Yeah. Who would like to make a motion to approve items 2 3 4 5 7 15 16 17 20 through 24 and 27 through 35. >> Move. >> Second. All right, I'm gonna call for the
088vote. Mrs. Longshore, >> I. Miss Tucker, >> I. >> Miss Akara, >> I. >> Miss Buchanan, I All right. Um, I'm going to start with Maria Akara just because she has the one. Yes, I I just pulled number 11 uh because I will not be able to vote on it because I work for the university. So, that's why I pulled it out. So, >> as a reminder for um abstension, you only have to abstain if you benefit from the contract with this. This is a summer program. This isn't student teaching or any of those. So, um, you're welcome to abstain, but you don't have to in this case because this is student program that you are not supporting. >> Okay. All right. Thank you. >> I I do have some questions on number 11, if
089I may. >> Okay. Um, the cost is $16.5,000. Is this a new cost? >> It's not a new cost. It's budgeted in the LCAP. >> No, I mean, I'm so sorry. Was this budgeted last year in the LCAP, >> Mr. Saucer? >> Yeah, this is something we did do last year. Yeah. Um, our intention here is to pay portion of it out of the LCAP and portion using the appropriate extended learning funds because it is an extended learning program. Uh, yes, we did do it last year. >> Thank you. And then it's my understanding that's 30 high school students. Does this include students from Malfa Valley High School, Granite Hills High School, and the High Desert Premier Academy? >> Yes. And um is my understanding that it is at Apple Valley High School. And is
090there any way I know you might not be able to answer this today and I don't expect you to, but is there any way I can get the numbers on that like how many of each of those high schools are participating >> for the one in the future? No, we don't have them enrolled yet. We could look at last year's enrollment or we could report in August. >> Sure, August would be fine. >> Okay. >> Thank you so much. Um, may I ask a question? Um, I meant to pull item number two because I was not at that meeting and I was going to abstain because I wasn't at the meeting and I didn't think that was right to approve the minutes. Am I like just yep okay with that? >> It was already approved
091already. So like yeah >> too late. Okay. Thank you. >> Is there anything else on number 11? >> No. >> All right. I'm going to call for the vote on just number 11. >> Mrs. Longore. >> I. Mrs. Tucker. >> Do we need a motion on number 11 to approve it? >> Okay. And a second. Um, yes. >> Okay. Well, I I move for number 11 to approve it. >> I'll second it. >> Okay. Um, Mrs. Longshore. >> I know. I just wasn't sure if I needed >> I >> Miss Apara. >> I miss Buchanan. I >> All right. Should we go one by one then? >> Yes. >> All right. Can I get a motion to approve number one? >> Oh, I I had discussion on it. I >> I understand. But we need
092a motion before you can discuss. >> I I thought we made a motion to open all consent agenda items. >> You thought what? >> That we made a motion to open all consent agenda items for discussion. No, we only we voted down the first one. Everybody voted no. And then we broke it apart and we approved numbers 2, three, four, five, 7, 15 through 17, 20 through 24 and 27 through 35. Those are all approved. We have not done anything with numbers 1 6 8 9 10 12 13 14 18 19 25 and 26 as of right now. >> Okay. I I guess I don't remember having to approve each one before having to talk about each one. Um so >> if you'd like I can make a motion to approve all of the ones
093you pulled so you can discuss them all at once. >> Um well since I pulled this could I make a motion to amend Uh consent agenda item number one. Um when we make a motion to consider an agenda item and second it, we have a discussion. Any secondary motions that are made and seconded must be voted on before any vote is taken on the original motion. This is general parliamentary procedure. We are a body meant to function as a body. Each representative given equal standing on this dis. None should be dismissed or silenced. Two secondary motions were made and seconded on two separate agenda items on April 2nd. I called for a vote and was told no by the president of this board. I move that we amend the April 2nd minutes to include both
094secondary motions and their seconds as well as our president's decision to not facilitate a vote on either of these secondary motions. according to general general parliamentary procedure. >> Trusty Longore, you're out of order. We still don't even have a second. We're still trying to work through this. I understand you've got speeches, but we can't have discussion without this item having a motion and a second. >> Okay. I move that we amend the minutes of April 2nd. >> And I'll go ahead and second. >> Okay. And what is your specific amendment that you would like to make? I move that we amend the April 2nd minutes to include both secondary motions and their seconds as well as our president's decision to not facilitate a vote on either of those secondary motions according to general parliamentary procedure.
095All right, let's call for the vote. Mrs. Longore, item one, I and that's on the amendment. So then Mrs. Tucker >> I, >> Miss Apara, >> hi. >> Uh, and Miss Buchanan, I vote no because we do not vote on a secondary motion. Um, how would that work on amending the notes then? >> I just want to make sure I'm clear. I didn't catch the item number. That's the amendment. I don't know. It was an overall. >> Okay. >> Could you be more specific >> like which which item I I don't >> Yes. So they were the two resolutions. I believe they were number one. Now I'll have to go back and check. >> Okay. Um so currently as it reads um it's I1 it says adopt resolution 2526-15 consideration and possible action concerning March
0966 and March 8, 2026 demands to cure or correct board action on March 5, 2026. Agenda item J1 resolution number 2526-9 on a motion by Mrs. Amanda Buchanan. Seconded by Mr. Rick Raleigh. Vote 31. Amanda Buchanan. I Anita Tucker. No. Maria Aquara. I. Renee Longshore. Did not vote. Rick Raleigh. I adopted resolution 2526-15 consideration and possible action concerning March 6 and March 8, 2026. Demands to cure or correct board action on March 5, 2026. Agenda item J1 resolution number 2526-09. Then underneath that it says, "Trusty Longshore shared a comment during discussion of item I1, adoption, adopt resolution 2526-15, consideration and possible action concerning March 6 and March 8, 2026 demands to cure and correct board action on March 5, 2026, agenda item J1, resolution number 25260. While the above motion and second was on the
097table for discussion, Trusty Longore made a motion to table the item. Trusty Tucker seconded the motion. The motion to table died due to inaction as the majority of the board took action on the original motion to adopt resolution 2526-15 consideration and possible action concerning March 6 and March 8, 2026. Demands to cure or correct board action on March 5, 2026. Agenda item J1 resolution number 2526-09. >> So are you saying that what she just said is wrong? that there was not action taken on the original and that there was a second one that was not voted on because the first one like that's that's what she's written. Oh, um so I I'm more than happy to share my notes with um um whoever needs to see the details of what I've asked for specifically. Um,
098but I'm looking to make sure that we properly record um my secondary motions that I made on these two um items. Uh and also record the second that was made by Trusty Tucker. And then also record, >> wasn't it? >> Yeah, she said that. >> It's it's written. >> It's there. >> It's in the minutes. >> Um it's not it's not in the minutes. So specifically, we can look in detail about it. Um, I'd be happy to go back um and specifically help uh re preview the uh tape so we could see exactly where I'm talking about it if need be. Um, but I've stated specifically what I was looking to amend and this board voted by consensus to amend it. But you're you're asking to amend the minutes, but you made a motion to
099amend, but there's no motion to be amended because there was no motion to approve item one. And then discussion. Um I think I've clearly stated exactly what I was concerned about and what wasn't recorded. Um I I you might recall the um conversation uh President Buchanan. Um I made secondary motions on them and um you decided to not call it for a vote even though I specifically said can we vote on it. Um I think it's important that this action and inaction taken by this board is properly recorded in the minutes. Um, I'm happy to sit down and go over the video specifically and aid anybody in seeing exactly where that happened just to make sure that it gets in the minutes. >> I just wanted to provide the board information for the record that
100um both of these sections were reviewed by legal counsel uh prior to me putting them as a draft item on the agenda. Um, if I would have known that, you know, there was any issue, I possibly could have had time to reach back out to legal to let them know what the intented u or the hoped changes were. Um, that way I could have brought something back. So, I I don't have an answer um beyond what legal had provided me as guidance originally. >> Mrs. Long shore, did you provide any of your proposed amendments to the minutes to the superintendent's office prior to this meeting? >> Um, as far as the work of this board, I believe it happens at our meeting. In our handbook, it clearly states that when we have questions, especially about
101the consent agenda, that we provide them to staff in advance so that we can have our questions answered because then we can have the information when we are here. Um, I'm not interested in going back and forth with you, President Buchanan, on this. Um, I believe we made a decision as a board and I'd like to ask at this time that we go ahead and move forward with other agenda items. I'm going to go ahead and pull number one and let's bring it back June 11th after we have time to review the things that she would like us to look at and perhaps she can provide that to >> um I believe just for the record >> I believe a vote was already made on it. Uh this board has made a decision. You can
102no longer pull it. >> Correct. They were um the the vote was uh 31 or Yeah. 31 for your motion to amend the item. But I just for the record, I don't have >> the page number or the item number of what I'm taking it from and what it is going to be. >> I I can provide that for you at a later date. Is that okay? Or do you need it right now? >> Well, can I add something to this because I I'm just I'm hearing all two sides of this story. Um if at some point when we had this vote in in March um Trustee Longshore abstained, >> correct? You abstained. Um, so for this vote, I asked that my um secondary motion be and the and the second that was made on
103it be acknowledged and voted on prior to um moving forward with the original motion as is standard parliamentary procedure. So I was asking specifically that my motion and trusty Tucker's second be acknowledged and voted on. However, if I understand correctly, at the time there was already a motion on the table, correct? >> And we voted on the motion on the table. So once that was voted on, the next motion was not going to go through because the motion on the table has already been voted on and pass. Correct me if I'm wrong. >> Okay. So in order to bring anything to the table for discussion of this board, it has to be it has to be brought forward. It has to be moved on and then it has to be seconded for us to have
104any discussion on it. Okay? >> And then in order to um do anything with that as a body, uh subsequent motions could be brought up. They're called secondary motions. And secondary motions, any number of secondary motions could be brought up in the course of that discussion. And whatever order those secondary motions got made, they need to be voted on all the way back to the original motion. It's just standard parliamentary procedure. So, because I brought up a secondary motion, it was seconded by Trustee Tucker. We should have called a vote on it. It was not voted on. Um, which is why I didn't vote because I was trying to call it back to parliamentary procedure. So what I was asking for at this point in time was that that whole process that happened can be
105duly recorded in the minutes. And so that's >> So you're not asking for the minutes to change. You're just asking for that portion of that conversation to be added >> to be added. Okay. >> Yes. >> And I'd be happy to go over in more detail. we can sit down with the video and specifically I I'm definitely trying to make this um as clear as possible. That's my intent. I don't I don't want to cause confusion. I just would like it um accurately reported that I did call those secondary motions. They were seconded and they were not voted on. All right. So, let's go ahead and get those changes to the superintendent's office so that we can have legal counsel review them. >> Yes. >> And then we can bring it back and vote on
106it at that point. >> Yes. Thank you. >> All right. Just out of curiosity, you pulled number six, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, 25, and 26. Have any of those questions that you have been brought forward to the staff prior to this meeting? >> Oh, they're just quick questions, so they should be able to just be answered on the spot. That's a no. Okay. Can I get a motion to approve number six so that we can open it for discussion? >> Move. >> Okay. I'll second. All right. So, what is your discussion? Um, just quick questioning um that this is coming out of the general fund and according to my understanding this is additional cost of around 20,000. Is that correct? Is this a new cost? >> Uh, yes. This is a
107new new system. >> Thank you. Required by law. >> We have a system. >> Yes. Thank you. >> Are we going to vote on six or are we going to go on to >> Are you done with six? Yes. >> Mrs. Longore? >> Yes. >> Mrs. Tucker? >> Hi, >> Miss Apara. >> Hi. Miss Buchanan I. Um item eight. Can I get a motion to approve eight? >> So moved. >> Second. >> All right. Discussion. Um yes. Just quick question. Um this looks great. Um for our Phoenix Academy utilizing their title one funds. Just a quick question. The 13,000 is this a new cost as of this next year? >> They did not use it last year. >> Okay. Thank you. >> Do you have any other questions on that one? >> All right. I'll
108call for the vote. Mrs. Longshore. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Tucker. >> I. >> Miss Apara. >> I. >> And Miss Buchanan? I. All right. I move we approve item nine. Can I get a second? Second. All right. Any discussion? Um, so I just wanted to point out this looks like a great program. Um, they're going to be going over business profit, compound interest, stock market, taxes, even auto insurance, and retirement planning. Looks amazing. Um, it looks like the cost is $47,000. It's an 8-year adoption. My question is, is this 47,000 a one-time cost or is any of it recurring? Well, the textbooks don't they last longer. They'll last less than eight years. So, if there's a new textbook that comes out, they'll have to go to that new textbook. >> I can answer the question.
109Um it's it's the the one the one-time cost is for the eight years of access. However, if we the if textbooks are lost or destroyed and they need to be replaced, then yes, we will need to buy the physical portion of the textbook. So, I can't promise that no dollars will ever be spent on this textbook again. >> But this cost as as the um item detail shows, there's the eight-year access, which is the lion share of the cost. That is an eight-year cost. >> Okay. So that will be um there's that part is not recurring. Any update updated needs for the physical textbook will be recurring. >> Thank you. >> Great. I'll take the vote via roll call. Mrs. Longore >> I. >> Mrs. Tucker >> I. >> Miss Apara. >> Hi. >> And
110Mrs. Buchanan. I. Item 10. And I move that we approve the agreement with Brian Cox and Future Vision Research to provide telescope training for students and staff at ABCI. Can I get a second? >> Second. >> Okay. Discussion. Um, yes. The $5.8,000 is will this be a new cost? >> We incurred this a very similar cost this year with Mr. Cox who worked with our teachers to do this kind of work. And so um teachers found it to be quite valuable. Um they were able to expand their offerings at STEM nights so that it wasn't just Mr. Gillette and Mrs. Gillette, but instead we were able to have quite a number of staff members who have become expert in this and so they've asked to continue this training. So it's not new to this year,
111but it is um something we wanted to continue using title four funds. >> Thank you. >> Great. Call for the vote. Uh, Mrs. Longshore I. >> Mrs. Tucker I. >> Miss Akara >> I. >> And Mrs. Buchanan I. Moving on to number 12. I move that we approve item 12. >> Second. >> Any discussion? Um, so I just wanted to point out and it looks like 12, 13, 14 are similar, possibly even 18 and 19. So do you still want to take those one by one? >> Um, I can group the next group together, but this one is already >> open. >> Okay. Um, I noticed that we have this cost $50,000. Um it due to lack of qualified applicants for a speech and language pathologist. Um is this a new cost as of this
112year this next year? >> It's probably going to be easier for me to answer this in grouping, but I'll go ahead and answer it twice. Um this is a it's not new, but it's much reduced. So, our overall costs in this area when you group these related items together for third party staffing when totaled for this year's anticipated needs for next year are approximately one quarter of what our anticipated needs were a year ago today. >> Oh, wow. And you're referring to all the way across all our costs for speech and language. >> Speech, language, licensed vocational nurses, transportation, which is not on this board agenda. We're still working with those companies. So our anticipated costs for next year's third party services of those type is approximately one quarter of what they were for the
113current year which we requested a year ago. >> Okay. Thank you so much. That's a lot of information. I appreciate that. >> Great. And I call for the vote. Mrs. Longore >> I. >> Mrs. Tucker >> I. >> Miss Apara. >> Hi. >> Miss Buchanan. I All right. I move that we approve item 13, 14, 18, and 19. Do I need to add 25 and 26 to that or >> um >> do you want those? >> No, those are those are different. >> Okay. Can I get a second on 13, 14, 18, 19? Okay. >> Any discussion? I know we kind of >> um so then just to just to clarify um the 203,000 this is this is um somebody we've worked with before and the cost went down correct >> let me clarify >>
114okay >> no the cost for the individual has not reduced in fact the cost for the individual may be higher >> but we in prior years have brought forward a greater number of requests with when we can't antic anticipate which company will fill the role that we require for a speech therapist or an LDN. This year we do have um some returning thirdparty staff members and when that's the case we've been able to pretty closely estimate the need and the cost. So for this particular one, yes, it is a returning person. This person is not one quarter of the cost. Please don't misunderstand. No. >> You said overall >> overall our our request for funding >> in anticipation of unmet need is less. Yes. Partially because we have returning folks from some of these third
115party companies that have agreed to come back. If they leave and those companies can't provide that service, then we may need to bring back another res uh agreement with a different company who could provide that thirdparty service. Unless we can find, of course, first uh choice is always a staff member we can find. We're always looking. >> Yes. Yes, definitely. Thank you for that. Yes. Keeping our money here in the district is definitely I know a priority. Um so for each of these number 14, 181, 19, they're all prior. Um we've used their services before. >> We current Yes, we use a healthcare. Um we use infinite speech care. We use platinum teaotherapy 14, 18, and 19. Is that the ones you just mentioned to me? >> Yes. >> Yeah. Okay. Yes, we do currently
116use those. >> Okay. Thank you so much. >> All right. I'll call for the vote. Mrs. Longshore. >> I. >> Mrs. Tucker. >> I. >> Miss Apara. >> Hi. >> And Miss Buchanan. I. >> Can I group 25 and 26 together? Do you want those separate? >> Um, no. of those would would have to be separate. >> All right. A motion that we approve 25 >> second. >> Any discussion? >> Um yes. I I noticed that uh we're being given a 50% discount for the 26 27th school year raising the roof for saved money there. Um because of significant technical system issues. Um my question is do you have confidence in that? um uh that that this has been corrected and that we can move ahead without concern because I know we're working with K2
117and specifically uh the reading difficulties. Um so I just think oh no if we had significant technical system issues last year that's one of the years of reading. Um but do you feel confident in being able to move forward with them that those um problems were resolved? >> Trusty Longshore, I'm going to answer that one. This was a brand new screener. um our teachers um participated in the decision of which screener to use. Um this was brought to the board for approval. It was the first year of use and that is why they are reducing the cost because of the technical difficulties. It did get corrected but it's delayed our timeline this past year >> first window. >> That's correct. And so um it was brand new across the state. So, we believe that it
118those things have been resolved. >> Okay. Thank you so much. >> Once those difficulties were worked out, it worked. The thing I'll tell you is that the only reason they're offering this is because the director of uh curriculum and instruction was unwilling to let them be satisfied with it's working now and so she essentially made them give us a discount. >> Thank you. >> All right, we'll take the low view. Can I just say that that's Theta Smith just so we have not just a director but Theta Smith is the one that did that. So I'd like to give her the credit that she is due for um making sure that that she held them accountable. >> Thank you. Mrs. Longore >> I Mrs. Tucker >> I. >> Miss Apara I >> and Miss Buchanan
119I. >> Right. I move that we approve item 26. Second. Any discussion? >> Oh, yes. Just clarification. Is this a new cost or is this um something we've already used? >> We currently use for >> Yeah. >> Okay. Thank you. >> All right. We'll take the vote. Renee Longshore. >> Hi. >> Anita Tucker. >> Hi. >> Maria Akara. >> Hi. >> Amanda Buchanan. Hi. >> Can I just point out that that last one, just for reference, does say renewal in its in its title, which indicates that it's already being used. And I don't know how to give better information to the board. If that's not working for the board, I would like some um uh advice on what to do differently so that we're not pulling so many items because it does indicate that it's
120a renewal. And it would also be helpful if we followed our governance handbook and addressed these questions because we do have the agenda delivered to us six days in advance. So if we could get those decision uh questions that we have to staff so that they are aware and they can be answered um and not on the spot like a gotcha that would be appreciated I'm sure. >> Okay. I just want to point out that when I ask these questions it's genuine inquisition. I don't put anybody on the spot. Um I definitely defer to if they feel like they need more time to answer them. Um this is not a gotcha session. That's not how I come across. So to suggest >> you would be more than willing to be able to get those questions
121in in advance so that they're not getting them on the spot. Is that what I'm hearing you say? >> And having you come at me, President Buchanan time and again definitely violates our governance handbook. So I'd like to point that out. Okay. Um, maybe you should extend the same decorum you're asking. >> Um, the questions I had I did send in already and I got them answered before the meeting. >> Your decorum towards me is inappropriate. >> I apologize. I am so sorry that you're offended. >> That didn't work. >> We do not need a second closed. The next board meeting will be Thursday, May No, that's today. It will be Thursday, June 4th. There being no further business to come before the board of trustees, it's recommended that the meeting be adjourned. I'll make
122the motion. Can I get a second? >> I call for the vote. Mrs. Longore, >> I. >> Mrs. Tucker. >> Hi, >> Miss Apara. >> Hi, >> Miss Buchanan. I will close this meeting at 8:33.
