congratulate the retirees and wish them the best of luck in their next chapter of life it's funny how when you become more mature in life you don't recognize birthdays but you recognize yours closer to retirement it's hard to believe that we are in the end of the school year and I'm finishing up my first year as the Buddha president although avuda has faced challenges this year it has been a year of positive changes in growth and we were looking forward to supporting and helping our members next year we finished up this year with giving away books and pencils at the International Children's Day community cleanup day and we're almost finished with our members appreciation lunches I only have four more schools to visit and Amanda our vice president was able to cover the lunch yesterday

at Sitting Bull for me it has been such a great it has been such a great experience taking Baja Taco and churros around to each School putting faces to names and engaging in great conversations those who know me know I love to talk and socialize the teachers have been very appreciated appreciative and excited about having food brought to them if you go to either Restaurant please thank them for what they're doing for our teachers Baja tacos goes in every morning early to be able to have it prepared and ready for whenever I go pick it up at the end of April I had the privilege of going with a CTA directors and staff of the 395 visiting schools and speaking with their teachers this was another great experience hearing their stories and struggles not only

inspired me but also made me appreciate where I live and work even more I was able to help them with grants for supplies give them information about disaster relief and help them understand the disability insurance that is available to them and attend their who Awards who awards are awarded to individuals that have been that have made a difference in their local unions I do want to tell a quick story one of the districts that I visited had an avalanche this winter that separated their District the teachers on the side without this school had the students come to their houses and they taught them in their houses the teachers on the side of the school they they emailed them all the materials that they needed for their instruction the week that I was there they had

their first regular week of school since November I was there at the end of April after the Avalanche their school was flooded with the water from the melting snow last weekend I also had the pleasure of honoring Leslie mcmenly our head negotiator and Amanda Wright my vice president with the who award at our high desert award dinner both have stepped up to help when needed and our great asset to a Buddha I would also like to thank our negotiating team in the district's negotiating team even though we haven't settled we are working hard at getting everything settled I will also have the privilege of traveling to Orlando Florida with Amanda in July at the beginning of July Amanda and Martha ran for State Nea ra representative positions Martha will not be able to attend however

Amanda will have the privilege or Amanda will be representing our local union and state at the NAA Nea representative assembly lobbying and voting for bills that help education in the middle of July Amanda and I will be traveling to San Francisco for the president's conference yesterday I had the I attended the County Coalition of presidents meeting at San Bernardino and I was voted in as their new secretary we had the pleasure of having Ted Alejandro our County Superintendent speak to us he went over the county the end of the year County highlights which included Cradle to Career road map website systems of support California Community School partnership program Avid student showcases and academic events mental health and behavioral support and budget updates he invited us to attend the Southern Regional student wellness conference in a

visit to a model Community School in San Bernardino County Mr Hollow Alejandro alejandre is committed to working with the presidents on various issues to help support teachers one of the issues that was brought to discussion yesterday thank you for support is Extreme behaviors that teachers are experiencing throughout our County I would not being do I would not be doing my job if I did not stand here tonight and advocate for our teachers here in Apple Valley I want to First clarify by saying I'm not saying anything negative about the principles or the district as they are doing their job very well I'm simply bringing awareness and asking for help right before we began our meeting yesterday I received two phone calls from teachers and an email that had to do with this exact issue I

received another phone call today on the same issue and I know I knew I had to speak on the topic tonight our teachers are experiencing these extreme behaviors and are afraid to be in their classrooms because they are not a trained or equipped to deal with the aggressive behaviors one teacher expressed that she has nightmares because of events that have taken place the teacher today was threatened by the student with physical harm and security had to protect her again it was dealt with and handled right away I'm only bringing this up because I feel now more than ever that we need to bring back our Safety Committee so that we can just have discussions around these topics and help teachers to feel safe in their classrooms these intents escalated behaviors are not going away here

or within our County anytime soon and teachers are asking for help I know that together we can work to make our district the best place to work thank you for your time and have a wonderful summer break in solidarity Karen [Applause] superintendent comments I'm gonna wait until the end so that we can get to um thank you Christine Awards board comments I hope you do the same thing Rick no I'm just looking forward to see the awards all right Amanda achievements Amanda all right I'm gonna go fast I just wanted to say because it's about the students that I made it out to a couple of the Arts festivals and some of the stuff the kids are doing in the district it's top-notch um whether it was music or um there was singing out at

Sycamore Rocks for their Arts Festival and then got to yakaloma for the ball game but um it's it's just the kids are doing amazing things and it was really great to see all the parents smiling watching them and which is fantastic so that's it all right thank you Gary I just want to again say congratulations to Angelique and Ashley and Cheyenne you ladies have done a fantastic job this year it's been a real blessing and a privilege and a pleasure to see you grow and I know there's there's a fantastic things in store for you in the future and we look forward to getting to know the new Representatives I know they're also going to do a fantastic job so thank you very much Maria congratulations to all of our students our parents and our

families for supporting these students through this uh Academic Year and we look forward to hearing from you when you move on just send us a postcard and tell us where you are and what's happening because we like to brag about you thank you again my only comment is let's move on to what we're here for honor the students tonight the clerk will read out any uh thing that came out of closed session um an emotion by Mr bender and seconded by Mr Rick Rawley on a vote of 5-0 the Board of Trustees approved the following to appoint Jeffrey lecompte as assistant principal Elementary Phoenix Academy range 7 column 1 on the certificated management salary schedule 205 base days effective July 1 2023. thank you I need a motion to approve the agenda I'll move it

second a second Maria all in favor aye all right all right we're going to move on to the recognition presentation and we're going to start off with a [Music] our main student Angelique and I like to say first of all these girls and boys that represented the schools we've improved so much in your stinking ability it's going to help you the rest of your life it really will the hardest the most intense phobia that most adults out there have is standing up in front of a large group of people and speaking your kids are already on first base all right this is great so the the Board of Trustees is going to come forward and for those of you that have participated in this in the past it's a long event for parents and for

students but the board members that have to stand and Mr Bender has been gracious to be here um he's getting ready to have a knee replacement and told me that I could tell the crowd so we've got some some stools here so that if if they need to sit they can but they're here to congratulate the students as they go through um as Mr Bender said I'm going to start with Angelique and as they're transitioning I'm going to read a little bit about um a little information so I'm going to start with something about me and it'll tie back to exactly Angelique Ashley and Cheyenne education has been my only career I began in the 91-92 school year as a teacher who was first inspired to teach by the role model in my life Celia

bentema my kindergarten teacher she always displayed encouragement as did my parents who wanted me to pursue whatever my passion was each and every success of a child is due to someone loving caring and supporting them so with that I would like to begin by thinking Mr and Mrs Guzman who are here in the front row Mrs Roddy who is also in the front row and Mr and Mrs Valentine if you knowing you're in the audience I'd like you to stand to be recognized please stand for us so that we can clap for you we applaud you for raising these amazing young women we are about to honor so we're going to start with hdpa and I'm so proud that Ishmael is coming after Angelique you've got some big cheese to fill but I know you're

capable you were on my student advisory and you're going to just knock it out of the park she'll help you okay Angelique Daniel has been a student in the Apple Valley Unified School District since first grade she attended Rancho Verde Phoenix Academy and Granite Hills High School prior to moving to High Desert Premier Academy at the beginning of her 10th grade's year where she was behind on credits here's where the story gets good during her 10th and 11th grade 10th and 11th grade years she excelled in academics and never lost sight of her goals she was able to complete her high school diploma requirements early and will graduate this year which would have been the completion of her junior year this year she's been a key piece to the growth of hcpa as a member

of the leadership group School site Council and the student advisory Council she has been able to voice her opinions and make effective change at the school site teachers and staff describe her as hard working sweet kind helpful and ambitious as a graduate she has multiple interests but will begin at VVC she has interest in real estate working with students and or as an entrepreneur in the fashion industry after BBC her dream is to apply for a four-year college and become a student abroad in Milan to study fashion I will add she originally spoke last year at the annual student presentation from High Desert premiere the following day I went to the school and wanted to encourage her to pursue public speaking she told me that she was giving her Administration a hard time because she

didn't have a high desert Premiere shirt on like the granite and the Apple Representatives did so that got handled as well knowing that she was only a sophomore at that point I asked that she returned the following year and that she continued to be the speaker for high desert Premier Academy and that we would put her on the agenda monthly um I look forward to hearing from Angelique each meeting and hope she will stay in contact with our school district stopping by an occasional board meeting just to say hi or show us the smile and update us on your accomplishments she exempt exemplifies our District's value of authenticity and I'm so proud that we got to have time this year with you thank you [Applause] oh next I'm going to ask Ashley to come up

and again Yvette we look forward to you following Ashley's footsteps we know you'll do wonderful Ashley has attended School in Apple Valley Unified School District since kindergarten yuccoloma Vanguard and granite during Ashley's time at Granite Hills she pushed herself in academics taking honors AP and dual enrollment college courses earning her seal of biliteracy in Spanish and served as an after-school program worker at her alumni yakaloma Elementary School some of her fondest School memories are of all the laughter with friends participating in anything but a packed backpack Spirit day countless school events and of course senior prom after she graduates Ashley will be attending Victor Valley college to continue her education while she figures out what her true passion is ASB has been a big part of her as she was a member all four years

and served as governing council president her senior year she took her part seriously as helping others is something she cherishes and loved that she got a chance to serve the community several times she's also been the type to speak the truth and her truth is she has never found it to be easy and we know this she said that she does not like getting up at the podium but she does it this is partly due to the immense stress of wanting to make sure things go accordingly and to plan and and and the endless criticisms it did not get to her it did get to her at times and it felt to her like the job was never ending always working around the clock but she finds this important to mention in order to get

to the real story it was hard it was a hard responsibility she carried but she did it with a smile on her face and never stopped giving her friends teachers and overall entirety of the school was counting on her to do and be her best always but she most definitely couldn't have done it alone she wants to thank everyone that offered her support including her vice president itzel for being her extra set of eyes came and presented during the time when you had your wisdom teeth removed and um sorry I looked away see I do it too uh and her family for pushing her beyond what they knew she could take and even everyone tonight listening to what she has to share she is leaving our district as a student but she promises to continue

to contribute to the community in order to try and give back for what she's been privileged to have here at avusd I will add I love having our representative share about themselves at this final board meeting where we honor them however as I read it I thought to myself hmm she could certainly be a future superintendent of Apple Valley Unified School District we look forward to hearing about your future endeavors service and Community are the values that Ashley exemplifies [Applause] okay last but not least Cheyenne [Applause] so Sophia I know you're going to do well as well I've seen you in action and I know you're ready to take this on Cheyenne Valentine has attended the Apple Valley Unified School District since kindergarten she has attended Sitting Bull Academy in avhs she has been a

dedicated student during her four years at Apple Valley High School Cheyenne has been in ASB and on the Pep Squad all four years she has been involved in clubs like National Honor Society Eco Club the philosophy Club Cheyenne has maintained an above 4.0 GPA and is a valedictorian at the school that's a big deal in the fall Cheyenne will be attending Emory riddle Aeronautical University and Prescott did I say that right Mr schulenberg okay it's not Prescott it's press kit apparently you have to know that if you're going to live there Arizona she will be majoring in aerospace engineering with a focus in astronautics which is the focus on the Science and Technology of spacecraft and launch vehicles I had to look that up because I wanted to know that I was going to actually

speak to what you're going to focus on and I'm really excited for you during senior Awards I watched Cheyenne get called up several times because she is receiving the University's presidential scholarship twenty one thousand dollars women of Excellence scholarship for five thousand dollars and an achievement scholarship for four thousand dollars here's what I'll add regarding Cheyenne she has Poise and always appears positive and bubbly which I will just tell you I got to see her both on the field cheering and chair at board meetings but it all plays out right she comes up bubbly she's a cheerleader she often came to meetings with an Entourage and they always followed her lead smiling and cheering on the younger students and their high school peers from across town knowing she is heading to Embry Riddle to focus

on astronautics tells me she's well-rounded cheer ASB and stem that is quite a resume finally Cheyenne represents the value of dignity in this District one more round of applause for these three young women [Applause] we should all feel good that they're that our future is in their hands oh okay thank you um Mr Schlosser foreign thank you so much this uh I'm patch flosserton assistant superintendent of Educational Services which all that means is I get to have the most fun because we get to recognize the wonderful things your students have done this year there's an awful lot of recognition at this time of year there's Awards assemblies and end-of-year festivities going on at every school and we can't recognize of course every student for everything but we have some traditional things we're recognizing and we'll

call them out and kind of talk a little bit about those categories as we call these students up the way this will work is I'll pick a category I'll try to keep it um you know I'll move around a little bit so Mr Conrad has to dig a little to find the awards we like to keep him guessing you'll come up get your award from one of us shake the hands of the board members then we're going to send you down to um Mrs Nelson and Mr schulenberg and we'll get you in groups based on the kind of category of award for his picture with the superintendent our Pio Ms Weidner will take pictures down there at the end so we'll have to move you on down there as we call you up so that's

how we're going to go about this process uh parents you'll be able to come up and take pictures as they queue up over there between the two flags so that's how the awards will be called out the first we're going to start with the science and engineering Fair find those Awards these are students who participated not only in our District's science fair but then they won and went on to this year it was done with San Bernardino Inyo County Mono County as a region and they've participated in the science and engineering fair and did well from Rio School Logan catanesso [Applause] from Vanguard Paxton Heller [Applause] from Rio Vista Christian roboti [Applause] also from Rio good job buddy Christian Rodriguez Stags [Applause] I love how they're coming from soccer practice in cleats easy on the

requires them to demonstrate their participation in local Civic life these students were the first ever to go through this process teachers from several of our schools including Apple Valley High School Granite Hills High School and High Desert Premier Academy in addition with some um teachers from seventh and eighth grade level put together the requirements and then the board supported that work this first group of students will go down as the first students ever to earn this seal they are Jared Salgado [Applause] Gabe Wilson [Applause] you can get it for him Cheyenne Valentine [Applause] Nathan Morton [Applause] Kade Hamilton [Applause] and Delaney air [Applause] Delaney I loved your project about cleaning up the desert as a fellow mountain biker we both see the trash out there I love it it's wonderful the next category yeah head

date order along with complete transparency to the parent students and staff in many applications in one particular grade level there could be more applications more parents waiting more students waiting versus maybe another grade level for example maybe kindergarten might have a hundred students on it where fourth grade might only have 15 or 20. but since January of 2023 this process is no longer being upheld nor is there any transparency of the waiting list to the staff or parents any longer presently there is no rhyme to reason on vanguard's enrollment process is example if a parent Place their application on the waiting list in March of 2023 very likely the student would be enrolled prior to a previous application placed several months prior but this is presently not the Accord of what's Happening admins the above

example is the reason parents are calling and complaining to you and coming to your offices demanding appointments and visits to see you in person as you know many postings and complaints have been placed on social media and with extra complaints regarding our site at no point has anyone ever reached out to me the employee who has maintained this list for the last 12 and a half years to obtain a view of the accuracy and why this is occurring at the district level the truth of why such complaints are more rapid since January than any time ever many documents show the inconsistency of the waiting list situation I would love to have a Roundtable meeting with each and every one of you to in-service you on how the waiting list was once functionally functioning and what

presently is being done at the site for these complaints that are rapidly brewing with Vanguard Preparatory each and every one of you would be in complete disbelief of vanguard's present condition of the waiting list and the enrollment process once the administrative staff removed this job Duty from me in January with no negotiations with CSEA the union or human resources the process of enrollment has plummeted into a way to parents dissatisfaction the board members Mr Bender miss opara Mr RC Miss Buchanan and Mr Rowell I reached out to you on May 11th via email with the support and consent of my CSEA representative I request an in-person meeting with every one of you or whom would be available for this meeting but as of this evening there has been no response I have envelopes here with

me tonight that does have the enclosed information and concerns that I would like to have gone over or have you yourselves go over once you have to review this information and if you would have any additional current concerns then I would be happy for you to reach out to me thank you thank you [Applause] all right no more comments anybody on the board have any comments no all right good oh excuse me and Mr Bender I do have just a quick for okay all right um yeah I know we did do our ice cream social yesterday and we had a wonderful time serving our employees throughout the district for staff appreciation um as you know graduations are next week at your diet at the diocese is your copy of graduation invitations including the adult ed

graduation all board members are welcome to attend at Adult Ed because of the limit on the stage they asked that the president of the board sit at the at the front um others are in the audience in the in dignitary seats so if you're interested in attending please let us know and they'll get your name on the invitation Mr Bender has asked Mrs okpara as the clerk of the board to replace him that day because he will have it in surgery okay comments Rick Amanda I do yes um sorry so I just wanted to share that um this past weekend I was honored to attend a scholarship breakfast Gala um and it was amazing and um I'd like to thank trustee agpara for coming with me uh even though it was very early I think

I pulled up to her house around 6 10 a.m and she's on retired time so that was um but when we when we got there we were so excited because one of the students that was being recognized for multiple scholarships uh was Trinity wise um and she was yes she definitely congratulations [Applause] and so she actually got up and she um read her speech and it was just so inspiring about how it was her it was great great grandma right great great grandma inside her was like the most influential woman in her life um we were just we were very moved uh so it was it was just amazing to watch her and then her mom and her aunt everybody was there and excited and all the sisters like they look up to you the

way they were looking up to you that morning um and then the other really great thing about the the breakfast was so we were both honored to sit at the head table and we had breakfast with State superintendent Tony Thurman and so we got to talk to him a little bit about our district and he made one comment when he spoke at the beginning about how anybody wants to go into teaching there's a twenty thousand dollar scholarship Grant available and there was one young man who was up there um and he mentioned he was going to CBU for uh teaching and so the audience kind of was like Hey does he get the scholarship well I'm happy to say that on Monday so two days later superintendent Thurman did get a hold of that young

man and he got a twenty thousand dollar scholarship for his education so do you know anybody apparently we need teachers we definitely do um and so there's a 20 000 out there I don't remember what her major was going to be but if it is going to be in teaching we got to hook you up and get that 20 for you as well so awesome all right now I'm done Mrs Buchanan I got a text message in the middle of your breakfast with a picture of Trinity and Mr Paris said one of our students is being recognized I said that's my girl that's Trinity nothing further what nothing Maria I just wanted to say thank you again I know that's that's the usually my ammo but especially to all the young people that came today

to Showcase uh all of their talent from the last this whole school year especially when when I showed up at the breakfast and to see Trinity um I I didn't know her but as soon as they say Granite Hills I perked up um the state superintendent thought I was related to you because as soon as as soon as she came up he wanted a photograph with her um because everybody on that table they thought I knew and I just felt I was it was such an honor to be from a small town and to be awarded such prestigious scholarship um I can't stress it enough great things are happening in Apple Valley and this is one of those well-known uh little-known stories but it is such great things happening and I hope wherever you guys
