desert Premiere Academy there are a lot of observances in the month of January there are a couple silly ones like National squeeze juice week and National Cowboy Poetry week but the two we focused on our high desert Premiere our national school choice week National mentoring month before winter break ended our counselor Mr Serrano helped students individually sign up for winter classes at Victor Valley College graduates who signed up started their classes on January 3rd and we are so proud to see our owls spread their wings as for mentors in my opinion we have a bunch on our campus that students can talk to but Mrs nilo is our behavioral counselor and I believe she is great at her job students feel comfortable and confide in her when they need someone to talk to at any

time today was our student advisory council meeting and I really enjoyed talking to Mrs Nelson one thing I vividly remember is her word of the year which is kindness one thing I always say is it doesn't cost a dime to be kind I always appreciate when the board comes to the school and talks to the students it makes me and my peers feel validated and understood we had a discussion about how students would feel more comfortable maybe if we had more activities to really Bond over and Mrs Nelson really made an effort to get some of the activities in motion and I would really like to thank you personally for that last month our graduates went to Disneyland and I had a blast not only did we get on rides and eat a ton of

food but we learned about leadership the Disney way with a cast member we learned how to work as a group and use our differences to balance each other out kind of like yin and yang you know and it was a fun experience to be backstage and learn about the history of Disney and the leaders that pushed it forward our upcoming event field trip is on February 27th and Mrs Rubio's art class we'll be going to the Cheech Art Museum and I think this will be such an amazing experience for our students to go and look at the beautiful art that people can make and learn how to interpret it instead of just looking our Esports program also has a tournament coming up this 25th and they will be in the rocket league tournament and we

are all excited to see them enter a new competition we already have 14 graduates for the first semester and this quarter we have another 14 people graduating and I can't wait to see how many we have at the end of the school year Mr Serrano has been pushing our students to fill out their FAFSA to sign up for scholarships so our hours can succeed with a little bit of extra help and on January 19th from 6 to 7 30 PM we are invited to the district office to work with counselors to prepare for college by completing our FAFSA in cash for college Mr Serrano is making a big effort to encourage our seniors to attend thank you all for your time and support and I look forward to seeing you all again next month [Applause]

dollars not only are we proud of and celebrating our students good grades last week we had a great time celebrating others of our student successes such as perfect attendance with a special lunch fun games a photo booth and a raffle for a flat screen TV that was generously donated by ptso our College and Career Center has been busy hosting guest speakers military recruitment events and keeping students up to date on latest scholarship opportunities Miss Avery has helped process over 300 work permits so far this year demonstrating how our hard-working cougars are maintaining good grades and having a job five of our 11th grade female students have also been sponsored by our local chapter of American Legion to attend girls State this summer at our state capitol this is a tremendous all-expense paid opportunity for students

to learn more about politics and their inner workings of government at the state level planning has begun for uh where every 15 minutes event to take place in the spring we have received a grant from California Highway Patrol and held their first planning meeting yesterday many of the staff are excited to help with this event and happy to see it make its return to Granite Hills High School campus for the first time since 2009. the next meeting will be held January 25th with a student committee to continue planning more details of the event together and get our Intel as of right now everything is top secret mental health continues to be a priority at Granite Hills High School our mental health clinic has sponsored several guest speakers so far this year to talk about issues

related to mental health today for example we had a guest speaker talk from the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools tobacco use and prevention education program and learned about the danger dangers of vaping substance abuse and the importance of finding healthier coping strategies for anxiety and depression I personally learned a lot from the guest speaker and listening to others opinions about it and their stories I found out it has taught them a lot and inspired them to either quit their substance abuse because they found out vaping and smoking has a lot more consequences than they originally thought or to just never start start doing it to begin with our boys and girls soccer teams kicked it off to a good start this winter season and heading into League Play girls have a 3-0 streak while

boys have a two to one streak we're hopeful and looking forward to a couple League titles the boys and girls basketball teams have also started off league play and we are very hopeful for them as well as the season continues wrestling is currently tuted to a league and we have three individuals who'll be going off into CIS some of our wrestlers are the best in their weight class of their division girls water polo has won League games already and the team is continuing to grow and improve although it is cold and I don't understand but yeah um Esports is in their second season where they are recruiting more players and training hard to become the best spring sports teams are already starting tryouts and hosting their informational meetings so it is currently a busy time

with Athletics ASB has been busy with events as well tomorrow we will be holding a couple pep rallies where we will be giving our sports teams the recognition as well as hosting games entertainment from different clubs and performances by our great Academy everyone is welcome to attend during their third period which has been split into two groups the first pep rally will be with our students in the a building or gym from 8 45 to 9 45 and the second one will be held for those in the building C D E F G or h I will be gladly I will gladly be I'm seeing at both pep Riley's and be joined by our sophomore class president Hannah I am excited to see how well our ASB class did by putting this pep rally together

and after having a postpone it from last month I am finally ready to see it take place with all of that being said I hope you have a wonderful rest of your evenings and be sure to stay dry from the recent rains and keep warm I hope to see you all next month with another set of updates thank you [Applause] Valley High Cheyenne Valentine [Applause] all righty well good evening to the board and members and attendees I just want to start off by giving a shout out to the kids from Sitting Bull you guys did great tonight um so my name is Cheyenne Valentine I'm the ESB flying president at avhs I can't believe that it's already 20 23. I mean I remember me being in a middle school and just hearing welcome class of

0242023 not thinking anything of it and now it's here before we get started I want to thank everyone for their amazing support last semester so let's start off by reviewing some things of the accomplished Story by reviewing some accomplishments that we made last year at avhs one of the biggest things that was implemented on campus this year was our tardy Suite this is where students were held more accountable for the for their absences and tardies and we have seen plenty of improvement within just five months of using this I didn't think that I would have yet another phrase forever engraved in my brain by the time I hit senior year but here I am always remembering the words beat the sweet whenever I'm late we also have held many of our events that have such

an impact on school spirit and student involvement such as our homecoming dance talent show and our fall Sports we have seen a tremendous amount of community and student support in these events which has definitely had an influence on and off campus for the students of avhs we are so appreciative of all the opportunities that we have been given and are still being given to connect our students and allow them to build a part of the community looking forward to the second semester of the school year we're working hard planning every 15 minutes Mr Sandoval win her formal prom and more these events are extremely important to many students and members of the community for example the every 15 minutes video always leaves such a large impact on the students that are able to be involved

and just watch the video and it reminds us to Assurance our loved ones and always be cautious when making major decisions because even when these choices can seem simple they're really life-changing the other events such as Mr Sandoval winter formal and prom are all opportunities for students to let loose and just enjoy their time as a teenager as we continue competing in winter sports we're so very proud of every single one of our athletes they're able to balance their time and academics on and off the court and I've done an outstanding job of representing what it means to be a Sun Devil we wish them all luck in finishing off their season strong and can't wait to see what they're all accomplished in the upcoming weeks to finish off I want to thank you all

again for the support that you have given to not just Apple Valley high school but to all the schools in the district including the middle the middle schools elementary schools and high schools I'm looking forward to all the amazing things that are going to happen in the next five months and can't wait to reflect yet again on all of our accomplishments thank you and remember Sun Devil pride is contagious [Applause] all right reports California School Employees Association go in here Apple Valley Unified Teachers Association yes okay I'm just glad I made it on time good evening superintendent Nelson school board members assistant superintendents and audience members I hope everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing winter break I cannot attend the December board meeting because I was at my son's graduation yet he graduated from the

sheriff's department or Sheriff's Academy I would like to start by sending a Buddha's heartfelt condolences to the families of the students we have lost in the past couple months when teachers think of our students actually any student we consider them ours as well and it's extremely difficult to receive the news our thoughts go out to the teachers and principals of these students as well I also want to express how much everyone is enjoying seeing the exciting things that are happening in the district on social media I loved and excuse me if I say this wrong Mrs lonehurst persuasive essay activity those students especially Jaden Rubin will never forget that activity I ran a quote across the quote today and I think it's appropriate for tonight there is no growth without change and there is no

change without loss with that being said I would like to introduce the Buddha's New Treasure Jessica Kuiper foreign Amy marks [Applause] both Jessica and Amy are a great addition to our exec board and will hope of Buddha continue to change and grow I would also like to congratulate Mrs Buchanan and Mr RC on winning their election and becoming avusd's new scoreboard school board members avuda enjoyed being a part of your campaign and we're excited to continue to work with you as part of the avusd family we know that you will help do great things in app for Apple Valley students parents and staff we would also like to congratulate Miss sakpara and Mr Raleigh on being re-elected and look forward to continuing to work with you as well over the past month I've been able

to attend several meetings with her site reps and principals I'm excited to see the positive relationships that are being built yesterday I walked away from a meeting at Apple Valley high school with Mr Goodrow and the site reps overwhelmed with joy not only from seeing the interactions and problem solvings that were happening but also to hear the great things that are happening at the school to build a positive Community among the staff I feel blessed to be a to be a pause part of the positive changes that are taking place in our district with the relationships between a Buddha the district and administrators it is truly appreciated as are the positive comments concerning our site reps I look forward to the meetings that are coming in the near future we also look forward to negotiations

that are coming up and we plan to present you with our sunshine in February again congratulations and thank you for all that you do I'm headed to an issues conference tonight and I'm hoping that I learned how to solve issues and not come back with issues have a great night and enjoy your three-day weekend in solidarity Karen all right well comment from our superintendent I'm glad the students are still here for a couple reasons um Angelique mentioned um the student advisory today and that happens across the system and as I look out there's kids here that participate at Apple high at City well Olivia always shows up in the best outfit so I I'm I'm sad you're in a t-shirt tonight because I was waiting for the when I saw the name I knew it

would be a really cool outfit so you guys pulled it off that you put her in a t-shirt so good job Mrs Bell um but Angelique and Granite Hills High School and Apple Valley High School have given me just such information about the School site and they have done it in such a trusting way that I value the time with them I'm so fortunate to get to come back a second time our k-8s are represented by fourth through eighth grade students and they're they don't hold back like this is student voice it matters with the adults in our system think but who are we serving we're serving the kids and so what Angelique was talking about today I'll share a little bit about that in a few minutes um it's really hard to follow these

kids talking that's all I can say national law enforcement appreciation day was Monday May 9th um or I'm sorry Monday the 9th of January um Chief Molina's in the back and we just want to express our appreciation as as our group knows we appreciate our staffs in May but we can't forget that we have these national days and have recognition so I wanted to do a shout out about that um we held up a moment of silence today for two of our students and a retired staff member but due to Notifications we received this week it has been a very tragic four weeks in this District we will be holding moments of Silence next board meeting as well um and I'm hoping that's that we're done with that but I can't have a board meeting

without recognizing the groups at every School site our crisis management teams have been working tirelessly to support students our school psychologists our counselors our peers on the campus and I just want to recognize the extra effort that's out there to make sure all of our students and our staff are covered including the administration because they come in on a Sunday when they hear they they're making phone calls they're making sure that everybody is ready for the morning um yesterday in the same kind of threat we had PJ pal therapy dogs here at the district office and we're working on Wellness here and across the system and I had been in an office one day last month where there was a baby about to um somebody's having a baby several babies on this property and they

said how about if we bring the babies and have a baby day because they would make us all feel so much better or maybe a dog so we ended up with PJ's Pals so the therapy dogs were here for about 90 minutes yesterday I unfortunately was down the hill at a meeting but everybody could take a break and go pet a dog and we know that the research shows that blood pressure is reduced when you're petting an animal if you like animals so they weren't required but they did enjoy it I was able to visit desert Knolls on Tuesday with Mr RC I saw amazing things happening in classrooms like I always do in one kindergarten class they were doing an art and Gillingham lesson and every child was engaged and it was the middle

of actually the end of the day really for a inclement weather and I was an elementary principal inclement weather at an elementary school and walk throughs at two o'clock in the afternoon that's like I should have been fired for that nobody should go do that but we had the best time in classrooms watching kids engage so um way to go desert Knolls hcpa Angelique cardi indicated that I was there this morning with student advisory I was a bit nervous when I asked the administration to come in because one of the students told me she was a little nervous for me about what we were about to present out of student boys but they're on their way and they they were heard and they're going to see some things that they've been advocating for and all

the right ways to bring it together I said the you can tell the adults all day long to make this happen but unless you're willing to get involved it's never going to happen so they're willing and they've already started their little leadership group to make it happen so I'm there I'm going to keep supporting this um I've got Granite actually I've got Apple next and then granite and um so hopefully we'll have some similar outcomes there too uh state of the district oh Angelique mentioned my my word about um of the year that was a challenge by Miss Oak Park I have a word this year and so I made each student tell me their word this morning and as we went around several students skipped and they were I said well we're coming back

to this so keep thinking about it and by the time we were done they were laughing about it because we had one student that gave us award at the beginning right off the bat but he couldn't remember his word at the end but we all remembered it so anyway it's how I tied my my remembering their names by their word so um Angelique you shared mine yours is intuition go with your gut you're going to always be right um state of the district is January 23rd uh great kindness challenges January 23rd through 27th and so it fits with my word I'm going to work really hard that week but all year long and then the governor's budget has been released um there every advocacy group has sent us the the update on that um it's

not looking bad for Education there are some Cuts but not major and they're in one-time money areas and it's just the the current proposal from the budget Matt will be sharing in February some of the highlights and in March his second interim and we really won't know much until May when the revise comes out and then safe and civil training I'll talk about at the end of the board meeting for some opportunities for the board okay board comments Rick oh thank you Dennis yeah I just wanted to Echo what uh trene had said um you know we these last couple meetings we had quite a bit of um moments of silence and I can't remember when it's been this many um people tragically passing away whether it's from a violent homicide a traffic collision or

a medical condition if it's running the whole gamut and I just want to uh I was gonna wanted to thank the staff especially the counseling services that the school provides because it's so important not just for the students but for the families as well so I just keep my comments brief but I wanted to thank the staff for that and you know keep your family close because this tragedies can happen at any time so thank you thank you Dennis oh that's good okay um Amanda all right thank you um yeah along that same line I just uh the last pretty much since we took over I I feel like every time we're getting an email um it's just been more uh sadness and my heart just goes out to all of the the campuses the

the staff the family um because it's a lot right now um and then uh I also wanted to say uh congratulations um to the recent Adult School what were they just students who received their EKG certificates because uh I I love seeing all that on social media when it comes across my feed and just the different sites celebrating whether it's a field trip to a museum of the desert or you know or the donuts and the persuasive writing that one looked really good I'm definitely gonna have to go check out Ravens because I have not been there yet so um yeah that was basically it thank you okay Gary I just want to again commend and congratulate the students and the teachers and the parents for just a fantastic first semester uh your your achievements

last semester are just extraordinary and and your presentations tonight were fantastic it's always a blessing to have you guys come and join us you're the reason why we're here so so thank you for taking your time and for the the the time that you've been preparing and then putting together your PowerPoints just uh fantastic very very professional so I I just want to again say that I'm excited you know based on what we've seen from our students and teachers and faculty and classified staff in the first semester I'm excited to see what's going to happen on our campuses this second semester I know you guys are going to be coming in with some fantastic reports and I can't wait to hear so keep up the good work uh as well as students but also teachers

and parents parents thank you for everything that you do I know this next semester is going to be just filled with success and achievement so thank you very much Maria um well I'm going to start on a high note and then begin to slide down um my high note is to congratulate that teacher who was seen on the photograph writing the float um and I thought that was impressive that somebody from one of our schools was seen on the Rose Parade riding the float and and I haven't been any um happier than just seeing that congratulations to the student speakers it's not easy to talk to adults and and it is worse even to stand on a microphone and you have all eyes on you so you didn't have the camera everywhere but we were

all focused on you so thank you so much for taking the time to prepare those speeches to present to us what you are doing at your schools if the rain will stop we will start coming out I'll start coming back out um to see what what's going know to your schools I have to welcome back all the teachers and the staff for having a wonderful Christmas holiday and coming back to do the best we can for our children and a special thank you to um to the staff and students at Sandia school this last um week um as sad as it was we had the opportunity to say goodbye to one of our own and and I thought it was particularly impressive um that everybody that spoke on behalf of that young boy talked about

his kindness and everybody talked about how um he never saw a student that could sit by himself and walk away he found a way to make that every student feel welcomed and loved when you come into a place and you see somebody standing by themselves or sitting by themselves take the time to make that person feel welcomed take the time to love that person because you might be the last person that has seen that person so as we travel through this 2023 I'm gonna challenge everybody to take the time to be kind yes when I had my meeting with Mrs Nelson I was tired of having New Year resolutions that I break in February so we decided that we're going to choose a word that we can live by and so every day you write

two or three sentences about how you have reached into those words if you can reach into that word you'll become a better person for the person next to you so my word was comfort initially I thought my word was I was gonna be a hairdresser um but I gradually moved to comfort if I walk into your space and I haven't been able to give you comfort please remind me that's my word thank you so much oh thank you I'd like to expand on what Mr Raleigh said Rick graduated from Apple High I taught there for 30 years and I've never seen so much tragedy in one month in that school but the best semesters ahead of you work hard your future is in your hands that's it all right adoption of the oh yeah I'm

gonna release all you guys go home and study hard for it Friday thanks for coming hear why we're here good job young man you did a great job yeah I had to point out sorry yeah good job [Music] wow three daughters I had two two boys and two girls man girls are a handful they are I think you know what they take care of you when you're older you got great ones you know they're what she's doing man her speaking abilities really improving they do this okay bye-bye thank you have a good night [Music] okay closed session reports clerk will read any action taken in closed session in expulsion case expulsion number 10 22 23. invisible inside yeah so we that's what the first one we did right yeah that's on discipline discipline case yeah

it'll be um under the readout I agree yeah the first two yeah okay in closed session the Board of Trustees took action in support of the following recommendation from the superintendent be to conference on litigation government code section 54954.3 subsection D town of Apple Valley versus Apple Valley School District on a mission by Miss Buchanan seconded by Mr Raleigh the board voted unanimously to approve the claim of the town of Apple Valley in closed session the Board of Trustees took action in support of the following recommendation from the superintendent B2 conference on litigation government code section 54954.5 subsection d s Taurus versus avusd on a motion by Mr RC seconded by Mr Bender the board voted unanimously to deny the claim of Sophia Torres I need a vote um all in favor aye all right

we're already voted for it yeah okay she was doing a readout s all right the board May approve the agenda as is are consent agenda I need a motion a second yeah second all right all in favor all right we have a recognition presentation by Maria H it doesn't say that so you know this thing turns you into an idiot have we have we finished this because we haven't done this my agenda's done we haven't done that he just finished this question yeah that's not what we're looking at your agenda my script is different [Music] keep going [Music] yeah I'm just going to talk really loud I can't make the mic work going good so for the last several months we've been holding on to some certificates that we had received um for participation of

a board member um a staff member and a group of of students in a school that actually supported um uh no drugs America Association Inc had a rally in the park over on a weekend on a Saturday and Miss Oak para if you would come join me at the podium um we think when we get these certificate certificates from our California legislature it should be recognized at a board meeting so that everybody sees um the beautiful certificates that they re that they received Congressman obernaulty sent a certificate of recognition for the participation in that activity where there were some of our students and um there's also a California legislature assembly certificate of recognition from Thurston Smitty Smith so if we can we'll have her stay up here for just a minute and then we'll have

the others come up as well so if I can get Mr Andrew kovaruvius to come up as well hi Andy glad you could make it I was worried you wouldn't be here you pulled it off thank you so um Andrew for those of you that don't know Mr covaruvius is the leader of our bands and he is at Sitting Bull and took a group of Sitting Bull band students to this event and made sure that they had music and just did a Wonder we've got great responses about their participation and so the same two certificates were written for from Congressman Ober Nolte for Mr Andrew covaruvius these are for display you know I have a few in my office too they're very cool and then um one from Thurston Smitty Smith so we'll have you

hold that up too and then the last one if I can have Mrs Heitman come up this is for Sitting Bull Academy because um these will be I'm sure on the wall in entrance that show Sitting Bull Academy's participation and there's an extra one here so I'm going to give you that and one that actually is for the school for the band so that it says the band not just Mr covaruvius and then one from Thurston Smitty Smith and so this was um a day when um some things were given away to kids in the community bicycles um I wasn't sure if it was just limited to bicycles but the goal is to get kids focused on things other than drugs and to be outside doing fun things that I I think all that's all

we were allowed to do when we were little but there's so many distractions now with technology and so it's a really cool event and I appreciate that Sitting Bull backed it and then miss aquar went as a representative so thank you we'll get a picture taken [Music] one two three good job right all right discussion information none at this meeting comments Kaylee do we have any comments Kylie um we do not superintendent's comments you've talked enough you don't understand anything it's not just taking a hard time you want to add um I just I wanna I think I can do it whatever you want to do you want to do it at the end actually so [Music] um our district participates in safe and civil training um annually it's how we have modified our mission
