002the assistant superintendents giving them a raise and most importantly has you changing the number of votes it will take by this board to terminate them if necessary this concerns avuda for a number of reasons first the assistant superintendents still have two years left on their contract what is the rush is it because we are experiencing a change in the board and it needs to be done quickly second the assistant superintendents want a raise a buddha never says anything about admin getting a raise after we receive one they deserve it because they work hard however we are always hearing how low the avusd budget is and how they can't afford to pay the teachers what they are worth but we never hear anything when site or district admin asks for a raise for four people they
003are asking for a raise of two percent including back pay to 2019 and with their high salaries two percent is quite a lot we are asking that you at least question it because our raises are always questioned third the one we are most concerned about is the changing of the number of votes by the board needed to terminate them the district wants to go from the majority percentage of votes to super majority percentage of votes to my knowledge every other thing the school board votes on is a majority vote majority voting has always worked for the avusd school board in the past why is this changing all of a sudden avuda is urging you to either oppose agenda item h six through eight altogether or ask for some serious amendments to the contracts so that

007students involved with our school in order to keep students spirits up asb has hosted multiple online events these events have ranged from showing off halloween costumes celebrating dia de los muertos and sharing tick tocks from our student body each of these events were well received and had a lot of participation we are also already in the process of planning more events which you will all hear more about as they are announced online events have not been limited to asb though our cougar tutors have also expanded their online services their most recent expansion has been group tutoring sessions which allow students to be tutored in groups instead of on their own this provides students with an easier way to form study groups and potentially brings in students who may have been afraid to come on their
008own we believe it will greatly contribute to the further growth of our tutoring center while these groups have focused their efforts online our sports teams have been practicing in person as county conditions permit all of our teams that have been practicing have made great progress considering the circumstances and seem to be preparing well for competition we anticipate great successes once we are able to compete now this truly would not be an update about granite hills if i did not take a moment to discuss the amazing effort all of our teachers and staff have been putting in to make sure we continue to receive a quality education teachers and staff have been very supportive and helpful during this time and everyone at granite is very thankful for them i anticipate that by the next time we
009speak i will have even more great news about granite to tell you for now though thank you all for your time tonight always remember maroon and gray lead the way thank you very much erin good afternoon esteemed board members during the month of october apple valley high school continues to adapt to distance learning while keeping the sun devil spit alive on thursday camp had a trick-or-treat drive-through for their students asb hosted an online costume and pumpkin carving contest sensations and vocal motion choirs had their virtual monster bash in halloween recital where they sang spooky songs hosa continues to spread their monthly awareness for october avid is making sure that all of their seniors get accepted to a four-year university and journalism hosted a mock election asb is also hosting a food drive for thanksgiving to
010help families in need as you can see even through distance learning our school has provided students with many activities to help them have a sense of normalcy through these unprecedented times thank you and remember sun devil pride is contagious thank you a report from california school employees association csea yes i do have a report from csca hello school board members superintendent nelson and assistant superintendents i hope the time since we last met has been a safe one for you and your families i want to wish mrs davis a wonderful time traveling and thank her for her dedication to students staff and our community i do appreciate that she always is taking a compassionate look at whatever csea has brought forth to this school board your style of leadership will be missed i would also like

015it will continue as planned also wants to give our sincerest thanks to board member donna davis as she leaves her position to go travel with her husband we appreciate your support over the last eight years and we will miss you avoda dropped off a token of appreciation with kylie late this morning to give to you at this meeting happy trails however i come to you tonight with one major concern i know for a fact that one site did not get supplies for each other kinder students that came back for in-person instruction in some cases not even enough for half of a classroom like eight boxes of crayons we were assured that every child that returned to in-person instruction would get the supplies they needed for the classroom the teachers asked and asked and what they
016were getting and they were not informed until a box showed up in their room on thursday and friday i have attached a picture of what they received for a class of 24 students since this is a kinder classroom they asked for whiteboards and markers since they can't work in groups and are not using technology and we're told no they need something to interact with their students so i personally went out and bought 120 whiteboards 120 whiteboard markers 120 pencils 48 pencil boxes and devouda donated 120 whiteboard erasers i spent around 300 because i wanted them to start the first week out on a positive note on friday before they started after being told no they did receive half of a set of white whiteboards and half of a set of whiteboard markers this is not
017acceptable during this time students should not be sharing anything the teachers should know what they are receiving for their students avuda and the teachers were assured at the in-person committee meeting and during the school board meeting that supplies for our students were not going to be an issue apparently they are with this site this site has problems getting normal supplies they need on a regular basis and have to literally grab pencils for their students when they can because they are often told no when they ask for supplies the teachers at this site are spending money out of their own pocket because they cannot ask for donations and their site refuses or gives them minimal or inadequate amounts if this is happening at one site is it happening at others a buddha negotiated in good faith
018not requiring the materials for protection to arrive before awsd started the process of returning to school sites but if awsd can't get the supplies for the kids or the teachers why did we start so soon i am begging you to look into this site asap and to get the teachers what they need i am also asking that you look at every site and make sure the teachers receive adequate supplies every student should have their own supplies and not share especially with cobin 19. this site and more start grades 1 2 and 3 next week and i cannot go out and spend thousands of dollars out of my pocket because these things are supposed to be provided by the site and the district thank you for listening to my concerns as always my members are my

022apple valley school district that indicated that there was a lawsuit against the school board for five million dollars um i just want to set that straight that's an inaccurate piece of information and i believe that when something like that is published we have the ability to at least publicly state that it is inaccurate um the second thing is i i concur it was nice to have um mr bender reelected without um being opposed at first we were a little worried he didn't show up on the ballot but that was because that's the process now if there is no other um nobody running against you you are apparently just appointed is what their term is so congratulations and then i did reach out um to each of the other members that were um running um for
023mrs davis's seat and um they both were very happy to talk and understood that um there is somebody that is ahead and as soon as it's certified we'll um obviously get them in and get them all set up with everything i don't know what it is about apple valley school board elections but they are tight every time and so this one is is very tight and the last thing is mrs davis although most people believe this is your last board meeting you still have one more and you do have to come please because we do want to celebrate you publicly um and so we do have a board meeting on december 10th which will be ms davis's last board meeting and then we will have the new board seated and do our um normal organizational
024meeting at the 17th okay well rick we'll talk about it i don't know yet and maybe something will change between now and then that gives us a little bit more flexibility so i would push forward yeah i mean at least family members at least we'll see what we can do and it may um require a movement of where we meet someplace we'll we'll figure something out because i agree she's given of her service for um quite a while and we appreciate that so this is big this is big board comments mr self uh i i just had a couple items i'm sure you attend one of those meetings i attended a meeting joint meeting with the austin manila county school board association riverside and we have the speakers the state uh instrumental public instruction he
025was there and the csba president which i know her real well and and i also recently attended a couple of centers it was only on voice because my screen was not working and i when my last item is that it may be it's not not urgent if the apple valley proceeds with the construction of the train station you know the las vegas airway uh they are projecting 12 1200 or 1200 homes in the area in the north side and so what what in the near future we'll take i'm sure mr schoenberg will take a look at that to see if we have any sites for potential elementary school okay so that's all i have mr bender i'm just happy to see that we have actually have live bodies back in our classroom you know pre-k

028year without miss miss stillman uh so is it second year oh okay it's your second year it's the second year but they did a good job i was really impressed with with that um there was one more thing i wanted to talk about um [Music] otherwise you know i think uh the having the kids come back is a good thing um but we need to keep our eyes on on all of the things that could possibly shake us up um i really look forward to seeing the children you know or even getting on the campus because yes they are on campus but others may not go in to see them so i'm really impressed with what how we open slowly um and not in a hurry to to get it done thank you so much

038that there was a possibility of success for those students and where steps seemed to have a negative connotation they wanted to rebrand their classroom but they knew that it would impact the rest of the district because we have step classes across the district we then met with pat schlosser and david wheeler and took down some information about ideas the students had in the end david then took mr wheeler took that to the other step teachers and so they will be rebranding the step program to achieve it's called achieve and mr schlosser will do the presentation next time um giving you what that stands for and we are so proud of these kids to have come up with us and mrs wright who have advocated to help them along the pathway so that's exciting um and
039then um obviously we've already talked about our tk and k um what we're calling our our soft start our soft opening um but the week prior to that two weeks prior to that we had um our mod severe students with exceptional needs return and i have wonderful emails and videos from teachers and para educators that were just so joyful to see those kids and we did have a kindergartener on tuesday on their or on monday on their first day um cry when they had to leave school at the end of the day and so for a first day um that was a new one to have somebody cry when they had to leave so um just we love that and um we're really proud of of the work that everybody has put into this our
040classified staff our certificated staff um everybody everybody has come together on this um the class of 2020 um we had had a request to talk about that um we will have a the survey is done it will go out to our families at the class of 2020. some have already told us they have no interest in doing a ceremony but several do have an interest so our goal is to get a timeline if their kids are in college we know that there's going to be a window of opportunity right now with our county and our area still being purple we aren't permitted to have large group gatherings however once we have the number of students and the data then we will come back with a plan for you that will take into consideration a smaller
041intimate gathering for families to have that experience of walking across the stage and having their moment and pictures okay so we will be bringing that forward once we have it and i guess the last thing is the human spirit i know our um opening is not ideal and there continues to be limitations regarding opening beyond our current plan but each first day is filled with hope about our system and every like i said earlier every member has come together your support is a board um the union's coming together and negotiating with with dustin and the team um matt's department getting the supplies out and the ppes and all of the things i just i'm amazed every time i turn around and see um how well it is working in our slow startup so we will
