the pandemic the Implement approaches to improve student learning in their classrooms and the classrooms of their colleagues they have modeled and trained their School site colleagues on what we now refer to as azusa's signature strategy due to their effectiveness in student learning and potential widespread usage they have also brainstormed collaborated and identified best practices for each of their sites to help eradicate barriers to Student Learning they did this in person as well as online during the pandemic they have analyzed student data and growth to determine how to best solve learning gaps at their school they have now pulled their expertise together and have formed an intra-district professional Learning Network where they are being trained to be teacher leaders at the new Gladstone Middle School as teacher leaders they will be able to model azusa's signature

strategies for their colleagues in the classrooms and support and guide them in implementing these evidence-based approaches it has been an honor to work with each of them and see them grow as Educators and leaders thank you for the opportunity to work with them and your district and thank you for your service I just wanna I just want to congratulate all the staff administrators for taking the time to take in this class this is why we have such a great staff here at Aziz unified and I could see that the mega middle school is going to be Omega middle school thank you for your time congratulations to our teachers and our administrators it just shows the dedication that you guys have towards your passion which is in the capacity that you serve in teaching our students

the community interact and then I was able to also go to Valleydale um as well and even though it started to rain towards the end um you could see that the parents and the and the staff that was was there were still excited about visiting classrooms and engaging with one another so um very very very nice thank you thank you moving to item 10.1 approval of the consent agenda may have a motion make a motion to approve second moved and seconded Miss Pineda your any comments and your student preferential vote yes any other comments or discussion by our board members I'll call for the vote and the motion passes unanimously moving to item 12.1 Miss Camacho thank you sorry about that good evening Dr Beau Board of Education superintendent Ortega and cabinet tonight I will

be sharing Azusa unified's attendance support system which is aimed at reducing chronic absences we'll Begin by just reviewing the differences between truancy and chronic absence truancy counts unexcused absences and relies on legal and administrative kinds of solutions and interventions chronic absences count all absences excused absences unexcused absences and suspensions suspensions the emphasis around chronic absence in terms of support is looking at what kinds of positive strategies or how are we looking at root causes to to reduce our system is organized in weird models beginning with those foundational support that are aimed at all of our students um and looking at as a whole school how are we promoting positive conditions for learning where students are more likely to want to come to school and be engaged in what is happening there are tier one um

which is um Universal preventions are aimed at encouraging better attendance and prevention effort before students move into that area of falling into that percentage that would get them at at Chronic absences our third tier is that early intervention piece that early intervention piece again looks at how are we now identifying those students who are falling into that category of chronic absences and how are we beginning to look at the supports that are necessary to help them re-engage and our most intensive supports are at the tier three and those are our students who are missing the most school which would be 20 or their absences are at 20 or more of the school year so in looking at the tier one which are the universal supports um and Azusa unified um we began by really looking

at how are we communicating um clearly schedules and expectations um around um attendance how are we providing parents and families with educational opportunities around the importance of attending school regularly and the impact of excess and the impact that excessive absences have on the academic program and learning for students and creating a space where students are welcome and engaged and have that positive interaction and connectedness with the the adults on campus looking at how we recognize and celebrate um good attendance as well as improved attendance when students are moving into you know who maybe have struggled a little bit and um are beginning to to come back and and show improvements in how are we recognizing that our tier 2 early intervention pieces that are in place are attendance monitoring which is collecting data at regular

intervals to identify where students are at in terms of their attendance um who is that that tier one area or tier two and who are at year three in order to identify how we are providing those supports and when we're looking at tier two that attendance monitoring becomes really critical because we want to look for patterns and how do we begin to bring families in to to provide some supports that might include home visit that might include you know making some connections to see what are some supports that might be necessary you know is there some before school care that families need in connecting them to our expanded learning programs through think together or after school types of supports again because chronic absences look also at suspensions we want to look at how are we

implementing some Alternatives um to suspension um uh before we move into that area as a support for students um and again just really identified those root causes to be able to provide the appropriate supports to get students back at school and I can ask your question sure now or wait to the end go ahead so my question is regarding the the tier one yes School in the school um is monitoring students attendance so do we have an attendance clerk there or do we have a specific person we have at the secondary level well we have our clerk who helped to monitor they might run report but also um principles assistant principles will look at those reports part of our collaborative data opportunities also include then looking at how are we tracking those students who we

are identifying you know when we'll run reports or who is at that 10 percent or just below that 10 percent to identify those and does the community liaison still do home calls some of our schools are still doing home visits we don't have we haven't um done the model where everybody goes out on the same day but we are looking toward developing that schedule for the coming school year so all these theories include the elementary middle and high school correct all grades and recognition I know that they had a recognition in the elementary school right in middle school but they do not have it at the high school I think it's really important that we do continue on up to 12th grade thank you and again our tier 3 supports are those um very intensive

supports for those students who are missing the most school and really that begins to look at very individualized supports um you know are there um connections to outside agencies that students or families may need are there housing issues are there some stability support that we need to connect them to if that's the case utilizing our student and family support specialist Alicia Torres sharp who um you know does that Outreach support to connect families to to outside resources sometimes this might include bringing our students to a Student Success team where we include families teachers other staff to identify what support the student and family needs to to help them get back in a good pattern of attendance and again sometimes that might include referrals to counseling agencies or whatever it is that the student and family

are meeting and sometimes these students at this intensive level do are referred to the student attendance review board that's art and sarb area and and moving into those those types of interventions and um are we still um in the process of trying to find someone well Maria Mahia you know she's been gone for quite a while and I know that she dealt a lot with the parents and she strictly worked on attendance here at the district office do we have a person that does is doing that at this time yes so that work has been shifted in the student support office I know for Hernandez has taken on some of that as well as our student and family support specialist Alicia Torres Sharp okay so again we look at our model um by how are

we beginning to engage parents and families um in the importance of regular School attendance and how that impacts learning how are we recognizing good and improved attendance I know oftentimes the focus has been on perfect attendance but I think there's also um it's important to acknowledge um improved attendance so that students um efforts and families efforts to to make improvements are also being recognized as well and again regular intervals of monitoring data to ensure that we are tracking students and providing support in time and not when things have have gone too far and organizing personalized and individualized supports for families in order to to help them come back thank you Miss Camacho any questions just one one question um it's my sense that part of the pandemic there was kind of like a if you're

not you know unless you're vomiting or or have a hundred and something fever then go on ahead and come to school and it's my sense that that has shifted a bit so is that correct in my in in the Assumption and one first of all and then how does that affect our how does that affected our data therefore so there's been I mean I've been of course with all of the ups and downs and changes that we have gone through through covet in terms of when can you when can you come to school what are your symptoms and all of those things um you know utilizing our program specialist Melissa Lofton who is one of our our district nurses who leads up that department and you know providing some bullet points and guidance um for

families and staff and you know making some determinations as to you know when is it okay to send kids to school if it's just a tummy ache um you know what are what are those things and and how do we communicate that so we've put together um some PowerPoints for families at the ed services level um to share out some of those bullet points um to families but it's re-educating that that piece no I was just gonna add um and correct me if I'm wrong I think part of it also is um on both sides and I think that sometimes due to uh home fears of sending a child uh to school uh because they feel sick or they heard somebody sick but trans and to answer the question again correct me if I'm wrong

uh chronic absenteeism is a Big Time Statewide problem uh because of kobit prior to covid uh chronic absenteeism Even in our district uh was relatively low uh but now you are seeing districts 30 40 50 60 percent chronic absenteeism and so Azusa has not been immune to that our chronic absenteeism rate uh has also has also been High um again because of the pandemic and so I think I applaud at services and um really trying to promote uh recognize and celebrate attendance and to start kind of Shifting that mentality that if you have the sniffles it's okay to still come you have a little tummy ache it's still okay to uh to come um and so a lot of work to be done in that in that Arena so our our still um or yes

we still have been Distributing um the free covet uh home test I mean in case like if they're thinking their child is ill or that you know just to be help help them also feel secure they can go to school but um yeah I appreciate that we're having a campaign and attendance because I know it's very very important especially right after the pandemic um they can know that it's okay you know they don't all have to stay home I have a question um two questions are there any uh particular Trends among subgroups um there are so what the trends show and it's interesting because the trends again are Statewide is um the grade levels with the most um significant um absences or significant significant amounts of students who are in that chronic absenteeism range are

in the TK and kindergarten range um some of that is attributed to or or what has been shared is you know when students are young and entering School sometimes their immunity isn't bolstered enough and they have a tendency to get sick or when our kids are young you know if they have the tummy ache they have the stuff for more inclined um to keep them home because we think it's just Tinder or TK or preschool but again it's that education piece and helping parents understand you know those um Early Childhood years are important in developing or reinforcing good habits in terms of of attendance and and really support that men in those areas but that trend is seen and we see that Trend here in our district as well those uh two grade levels have

um the the more significant amount of students who are in that chronic absenteeism rate thank you and then my last question is as a board how can we support the district's effort to mitigate chronic absenteeism um you know discontinuing to Echo um the importance of students being at school and um you know um um you know our schools are wonderful places to be you all get to see all of the rich wonderful things that occur and you know any day that's missed we missed we miss the kids when they're not at school so you know just echoing those sentiments I think are are important as well and we are also looking ahead at launching um a big attendance campaign at the beginning of the school year um you know bringing out our attendance banners and

and having some um fun things going on to celebrate attendance so we will be inviting all of these to those special times thank you moving to item 13.1 update of surplus property Mr Ortega thank you Dr bo uh next week on May 17th will be our third uh Surplus property AKA 711 uh committee meeting on Wednesday at uh 5 PM um at that meeting we will be sharing with the committee some data that they had requested and so tonight uh we will be sharing uh that data with you all as well and so I'd like uh to call on Latasha to walk us through uh that particip that particular data sure so what we have on the screen um are the predicted talks um to bring our remaining our Surplus sites to parity um and

as far as parody just meaning for the infrastructure networking IDF cabinets HVAC and vice versa I want to stress that these amounts are based on this year's projection so depending on the time of when the decision is made or when construction takes place we would have to account for inflation so as you can see here there's about a 1.2 million dollar difference from our lowest school to our highest school as far as the amount that will need to be invested into the school for operational purposes foreign this was a piece of data that was requested by the 711 Surplus property committee and so we wanted to make sure that that was shared with the Board of Education as well um at our previous board meeting uh we also um highlighted or shared that at this

meeting um we would like to provide the Board of Education an opportunity for board members to share some initial thoughts um about what they might be thinking um we could do a surplus property again the committee had requested like you know as we're going through this process what what is the district thinking like what what is there um they they do know that all of this is Uber preliminary and that nothing's binding there's no action tonight um and so this is just again just some first thoughts um in terms of what and maybe you have not maybe it's n a maybe there's there's nothing and that's that's okay as well uh but I'd like to turn it over back to uh Dr Beau um and uh again if we can hear just some initial thoughts

from the Board of Education why don't we just kind of take a structured route couple rounds and we'll begin with board vice president Rodriguez Pena okay so um my thoughts of looking at the school closures and also the schools that are remaining my thoughts are actually okay so um the adult transition and the longfella those two School sites they do not have parking they do not have most needed is handicap parking at all when you go there you have to go around the block to try to find a parking uh to let your child out but um I I would like to probably see them in one of these um schools that that will be closed also um I would like to see a community center in our community we did not have a community

center where we can um you know have concerts concerts or you know we all have to go to certain School sites but we it would be nice if we had one Community Center for everyone to go to one place because it's okay we never know where we're going I mean it's going to be in a glass time to be the zoo so is it going to be at the elementary is it going to be you know at Sierra High where we have or we're just saying we're always freezing in there but when we have our teacher right Arturo so just saying it would be nice if we were in a place that were comfortable um and and uh Sierra High School also I I was in the Wasps I heard some concerns of people talking

about parking thinking about that it was like in a busy street and speaking about the classrooms that they you know don't feel they're too crowded or even the um the weight room the gentleman had two big giant classrooms and he was at um but the other Sierra and then now the time to Mr margosa they turned him into this one little spot here so um that green said you know that was a decision that was made but now that they're there I feel they don't feel that they fit and do you have anything to say that about them yeah since you go to Sierra High School you're okay I do like that they do have the cafeteria that they didn't have before and and you know they they have their um cafetorium and that's really

nice but I just think that that's my thoughts as I'm looking at the schools that are closing but I see other schools that I think that are in need degree that we shifted I mean move to some of these other facilities for a comment I know some of the ideas that we shared in our past meeting we talked about the community center and I I really think that it's something we should embrace as the district where we can not only just use it as a community community center kind of like a One-Stop for for our students and parents but I also think that we can use the utilize it as a kind of an event center and also maybe release it or somehow if there's other Community Partners a lot of non-profit that are also

looking for space because there's a lot of um we don't have a lot of land that's available so this this is a very great opportunity for the district to capitalize on on becoming a partnership not just with the city but with other non-profits within the city and maybe even embracing those in the surrounding Community because I think we're all kind of in the same boat sometimes we're looking for space I also think that in speaking with Mr Ortega I I I didn't realize about the space and at Sierra High School and it had had been moved and so I too had a concern about that and I think this is an opportunity I mean there's there's this kind of preliminary right now we're just kind of sharing ideas and I I would for me personally

I I would like to kind of just just think back you know I I really want to see the sizes again I know last time we we had kind of like a site plan and we had more of a visual I mean I I hate to sit here and think about these ideas and not be able to refer back to that on the site plan the square footage and what kind of space we're looking at some of the green space I think we need to really look at all those things that um that you know our vision for this for not just you know for here for our students but also the community because we have to take the community into consideration so I really I know there's a lot of great ideas here at

the table I think that we need some kind of a social services component and I think that would be great for the students I think there's a lot of um opportunities right now that we really need this is a great opportunity for our students to really uh help help them you know provide wherever the need is look at those opportunities and look at this opportunity that we have together and I really feel that as a board and a district we should reach out to our teachers because they're the ones they're the kind of the front line with students and maybe we can do like a survey just to get an idea what the need is like internally because we don't know that we we don't work with the students we hear it but I don't

know that's just kind of my thoughts right very preliminary so we're to tap back to board vice president Rodriguez Pena and then we'll continue with board member Greer I guess we're going to add one thing regarding Sierra High School you know also I just learned that they um don't have a place to play their Sports they have to go to another school to use their field that's how small they are right so I think it'd be nice if they had their own field their own you know better parking and and regular facility for their classrooms that was my last comment thank you board member Greer so in my at this stage certainly um I don't have any opinions about any particular School site so what needs to happen I I appreciate and recognize that uh

that there's a committee that's really going to dive deep into some of these things to be able to make some recommendations my My Hope though as as we get to the end is that there is not any I'm really just hoping for not a cookie cutter um response um I think that instead being able to see a menu of things that I think are are available to us and some creative options the first thing that I think is important is that we consider what are our District's needs so I unders I think I shared at the last meeting I'm I'm I was surprised and slightly frustrated about uh the Sierra High School thing because that had not come up when we talked about moving to our high school over to where where it is now

and so I guess how can we ask the questions into the future um so that we don't find or our next iteration of the board doesn't find itself at this in this place can how can how can we do that work and do that homework so that we we have just thought about those things um and not asking a board 10 years later to to hear that in 2023 the board made this decision but didn't think about those those future things so so that's that's one of the pieces what are the district's needs as we project into into the future um I I would I almost can't or see a scenario where we don't have some type of community services centralized location I see that we have uh Mickey here with the city and and

the great work that's going on with all in uh for Azusa and so looking for ways how can we partner there and and just what are what are some of the other creative things with Community organizations um as you all know I'm uh pastor at Pluto Community Church homework house is on our uh campus there at Foothill Community Church but we'd love to see are there are there ways or options for a homework house to expand and to look into others I would just love to see what are some creative ways to partner with um with our community um and and have some centralized services that already exist and make some space to invite some new organizations to provide some uh services to our city um as we dream um what what some Partnerships could

look like and then I'm I'm more hesitant around sale just because when you when you sell something then you you don't have it and how can we retain some assets again to have some leverage for it for future boards to make some decisions um I was but still I I wouldn't personally wouldn't be opposed if we looked and saw that there was one or something that really made a lot of sense um I didn't I had not thought about or heard the idea of some partial sales and so when we look at the size of some of our site I could see there being some sites that are kind of I don't know how the the correct terminology but looking at selling portions and still retaining uh portions of of those sites I like the

idea of that um as uh to have some revenue and how do we how do we directly do that and then and then convert that to to some projects that that are that are highly visible and and and and carry a lot of weight within our our community um and I'll and I'll leave the board the committee to to think through and staff to think through and dream up what some of those things can be um lease same thing what are some some lease options that could actually generate some Revenue um but again that's that's further down on my list it's important for Revenue to be generated but as we look at some of the community services I'm less concerned personally about Revenue generation and more about what we're able to offer within the city

and then what are some other creative things that just makes sense as we look at some of the sites and so wild idea things uh they were talking about housing what could that look like if there was housing that was being provided for uh for staff or or or yeah for Teacher housing or um I know that there's been conversations around property swaps and what would it look like to take this property swap it for another property and and now we have a property that is more conducive to some creative ideas and so um would love to see some creativity baked in um and some options with them some really thought through um fun creative ideas to capitalize on this this moment that we have right I actually just have one question and when I

look at the underground utilities for Central Middle School wasn't this completed already no what did we do underground at Center I am not aware of underground utilities at Center I I just thought we we had so we have you're saying we haven't dug up Center from I understand I will double check but that is my answer I think it was in the last six years okay I will double check it I I think there was something done there the only reason why I'm saying that it could have been Plumbing because if I recall on Cerritos they ran into a block right of a cement or something in it that so they had a certain plan and they had to go around the plan right so they did I will double check this evening it was

just coming but underground utilities would it be a different avenue but I will double check that and report that out yeah thank you um I will try my best to be concise uh so when I think of a healthy City healthy District I think about um a great place to live work and play and then also to learn and I think um I'm I'm agreeing with my colleagues comments around harking and access and um athletic debate um I will make a specific request Mr Ortega if we could um organize a visit to Fernando Ledesma high school it's uh in the Amman Union High School District they have an amazing new gym and um uh uh Jim and uh weight room that they just built um I think that is really a vision for what um

we can do for continuation school students um again as a vision right as an example um so learn live work play um I'd like to to think about what our our criteria and our goals around Recreation both as a district and also in partnership with the city what do we want the Souza Community to have in terms of recreational space what do we want our district Inner City to have in terms of places and centers that promote Health and Wellness and um I I think that looking at creative ways to retain ownership of our property but also generate revenue and how do we partner with um in a non-profit after school partner like and I'm not naming a specific group but like a boys and girls club to come in and lease one of our

facilities providing another Rich opportunity for after school and wraparound programming at one of our sites that's built that's built for kids right not an office building that's inverted but a site that's really built for kids with parking and restrooms and and field space um and I think for me the a site that I think makes in my opinion makes sense and I know there's been discussions at the city level off and on with different people and different iterations is um particularly looking at kind of the one of the center Central spaces in our city and that being Slauson Middle School and looking at its unique location mirroring Memorial Park and that being a central place for recreation and Civic engagement um and and athletic activity um Slauson being one of our larger sites um it's

very nice nice and square it's very open and I wonder if we're dreaming big and saying what um I'm never before seen thing could we have there could that be um a joint partnership with the city and other non-profit or for-profit Partners to use this loss in space as a soccer field as a district-based food pantry that could serve our families first and Community second um could it be a place where we could house a Wellness Center um maybe in partnership with a healthcare organization that makes sense for our community and given the square footage and the acreage of the site could it also be a place for a school Farm or a community garden and could we do all of those things and say that the between Slauson and Memorial Park this is a

essential hub for recreation athletics and wellness that benefits the entire community and um those are my initial thought and I'd like to add to that regarding um central location I feel that it's off the 210 Freeway we do not have anything that is or our community and I I know that Memorial Park they do have a community garden already and it's off the 210 Freeway and this is another thing that we're asking when we had the community meeting regarding um and I'm looking at Center School to be honest with you so the the students or the children or the community can go there and also participate in the wellness center they had I'm not sure I'm sorry Mickey but I'm not going to ask the question but they had a Wellness Center at the old

um sister city house I'm not sure if it's there any longer that had the nurses from Apu would come there but it would be nice if they had the same thing on the other side of the 210 Freeway just to be we're talking about Equity equal you know fairness that's what I how I feel and I just wanted to um share that um I am less concerned about a site in particular but these types of resources I I want to kind of echo um board member Greers I really would like to see a vision kind of you know thinking out of the box for lack of a better word but you know maybe with I mean technology what's always changing maybe a tech center I'm just thinking of ideas I know the city when I

was working with city of Azusa the city has always looked at building a library maybe there could be a partnership with incorporating a library some ideas like that were brings the partnership both they're collaborating with the city uh just really getting creative and seeing what we could do I mean this is an opportunity we really have space here to work with and that space is not it's really for the community for the students so I I think we really need I would love to see the committee really come together and collaborate with on the thought of working with the city and partnership and I mean library book students so and there's a lot of things that happen at the library we have seniors reading the students so we you know come up with the coffee

or something coffee with the cop or something so we really need to embrace that and and really think partnership and uh board president what you shared actually triggered just a couple of extra thoughts I said I wouldn't get in to create you know certain creative options but but it triggered some thoughts I think as we as we look at some of the recreational opportunities and Facilities that are out there and yes ways that we um share constituencies with with the city and so if we have fields in there yeah there are there are soccer teams and there are uh little league and there are different how can we partner with some of those entities um if what would it what could it look like if we were to to kind of carve out and have

some space for a district field even if it meant that we it's not something that we are able to fully tackle uh now but but we were to carve out space to kind of begin that and and it's something that could be built upon um and if there was something some of these types of things disrepeed or other things I think it's the city in general um outside of the school district I think would be able to utilize those facilities and those resources so yeah just really big on on partnership and what are some of those things that we again we can dream and be very creative in this Junction any other comments thank you so much moving to item 13.2 approval resolution 22 23 27 declaring the month of May as Asian American and

native Hawaiian Pacific Islander heritage month is there a motion motion to approve 13.2 second moved and seconded any discussion I I have um some discussion um I uh look I'm grateful that we have this resolution at our board meeting and that we've done it for the past couple of years at least and I want to take this moment to recognize the contributions of Americans of Native Americans of Asian native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander descent I um the contributions of those individuals in arts science culture language and food and um as as much as I take this moment to celebrate I'm also taking this moment to raise awareness and consciousness of some of the dark spots in our history regarding um Americans of Asian descent beginning with the 1971 Los Angeles Chinatown Massacre the 1882 Chinese

Exclusion Act the internment of over a hundred thousand Americans of Japanese descent during World War II the 1981 murder uh race-based murder of Vincent chin in Detroit and more recently the covid era the unprecedented rise in hate crimes against Americans of Asian descent um and at the ti again at the same time that we Embrace The Duality of our identities and our participation in Civic life the contributions and some of those dark spots I think are things that we need to hold dear to inform our future and what we do with our our U.S public education system and um so again I take this opportunity I know there are many people in this room that are the first in their family in their household in their community in their school and I want to get

to the point where where um as much as we celebrate the first that we are promoting and supporting the next of us in our community and so with that um Ms Pineda your any comments from you and your student preferential vote on this item yes thank you so much and now we'll move to our vote and the motion passes unanimously moving to item 13.3 resolution 22 23 28 declaring the month of May as National mental health month is there a motion motion to approve 13.1 approval resolution 22 23 28 declaring the month of May as a national mental health month second moved and seconded any discussion and Ms Pineda yes thank you so much more members will move to a vote motion passes unanimously moving to item 14.1 we have Miss dahura good evening is

that better okay no it's not um frequent the title this is the family and cabin this evening I have the pleasure of sharing information about the Unified School District partnership with over 34 million Americans according to you in September 2016 Governor Brown said methane emissions reduction targets of California which is sp 1383 in a Statewide effort to reduce emissions of short-lived climate pollutant and that August must be reduce organic waste disposal by 75 percent rescue for people to eat at least 20 percent of currently disposed surplus food by 2025 I first reached out to popia in 2020 when the organization received brand from the Los Angeles Department of Public Health funding was to facilitate the partnership between copia and school districts to ensure compliance by donating any Star Plus food products to put banks in

that although we have seen a significant decrease in food West in our schools we still have Surplus Foods especially right before the long holiday break with an increase in food costs and the cost of living including security continues to be a problem for a large number of people and I'm glad to share that this food will go to individuals in our communities that need it instead of the trash and this is where our partnership with cook Tom Hewitt from copier will now share some additional information regarding the partnership or two entities of established and how it has benefited our community and surrounding area so hello can everybody hear me thank you for thank you for welcoming me into uh your board meeting today I come from a household of teachers so uh this is definitely

meaningful to me and uh it's been a pleasure working with azus Unified School District to distribute food surplus Stella had mentioned there is a substantial problem with food waste in this country uh over 40 percent of the food is wasted and that's the equivalent of about 119 billion pounds of food so picture the Rose Bowl Stadium 90 000 seats in Southern California and visualize that filled to the brim with food waste that's how much food is thrown away every single day so where does that go it goes into landfills and uh 24 of all U.S landfills are filled with uh food waste which contributes to greenhouse gas and unfortunately that food is not being diverted to the over 34 million food insecure Americans that are in need and a solid mention not not only is

donating the right thing to do but it's actually required in the state of California in January 2022 California passed SP 1383 because Municipal landfills are the third largest emitter of methane across the state 20 of the state's methane uh is a gas released from landfills and this plan was put into place to decrease the amount of short-lived climate pollutants by 75 percent uh by the year 2025. this bill also sets a goal to rescue at least 28 of currently wasted edible food by 2025 and redirect the food to people in need and in your case uh those individuals within the local community Azusa is ensuring compliance by partnering with covia and providing that they are redistributing the maximum amount of food to local non-profits instead of sending it to landfills therefore being in compliance of

this regulation and copia exists and has been recognized across multiple Publications most recently as one of fast company's most Innovative companies in a social good category because we make the process of donating is easiest hospital for organizations such as yourself so when food surplus is available not every non-profit wants the food that you may have to donate there are limitations in availability of non-profits when food surplus is available the capacity that they could take and the types of food that they are able to accept Topia has over 8 000 Partners Nationwide from food banks to women shelters veterans homes after school programs and more so we can ensure that any donation whether it's pallets of fruit of or croissants from azusa's donations they're all going to non-profits that want each donation are able to share

it within the local community and to those that are in need and since we began this partnership we've been able to achieve some amazing success and make a Major Impact we've been able to help our planet by diverting over 43 000 pounds of CO2 and we've also been able to feed over 8013 meals to those local individuals in need and when you start talking about numbers uh the size it could be different called to uh to understand so just putting it into easier terms that's uh almost ten thousand pounds of food donated uh the equivalent of almost a million gallons of H2O the water saved uh which is uh the equivalent of over 238 gallons of gas not being burned or uh 1.6 million of glasses of water being uh being saved so it's truly

amazing what we've been able to accomplish together and what your organization has been able to do within the local community as well as for the environment in a short amount of time and it's important to understand who these donations are serving this food is being directed to local non-profits within a food safe distance for redistribution such as the uh social model recovery systems program and the express Workforce Foundation you could see some great testimonials uh up on the screen right now uh that uh your donations have contributed to so we definitely look forward to continuing this work and if there are any questions uh feel free to ask thank you any questions or comments by the board I just want to say thank you for uh this partnership I used to work at the city

of Norwalk in their social services department and one of the things about the city of Norwalk it was very unique because there's only four cities within L.A county that actually have a social services department and they actually had um Food Bank so I was able to see how much and we had the Harvest program so I was able to see how much recipients would come in we would have people coming in they didn't have to have our service or be residents of the city because we were also provided food from the regional food bank but it was really good to see that the recycling of food going back out to the community to those people that are understood so I I just want to say thank you for the zooza for and yourself or really

getting out there and putting implementing this into place I think that we could continue to grow the program because there's always people in need right especially right now with with inflation and in the classified foods and goods and services um I appreciate program and the work you're doing thank you I have a question um are you aware of any other local school districts engaging in this type of effort yes I believe and uh Tom could correct me but I believe Walnut unified is doing it I believe El Monte was um and the reason why all school districts have to be put back so oh I I know I've got both school districts that have jumped on board and I'm sure Tom has a list that he could share with thank you yes there are several

school districts that we work with and uh one of the reasons why donations from school districts are valued by non-profit organizations is the high quality of the food and the nutritious value of the food because you're already serving it to uh to your students so we definitely appreciate working with the school districts such as yourself board member Greer just a quick question because I don't see it listed here anywhere incredible partnership is there a cost to the district for this partnership or is this a what and and what is that and or is this the partnership that we have with him uh initially there was no cost because copia had received a grant from La Department of Public Health but um starting last year they supposed to pick up the food so for every donation

there's a six people 60 dollars yes yes is that every year or monthly or how often does it every donation they pay every donation yes but we don't we don't really have that many donations at the last donation they picked up was in December right before the holiday break and we haven't given them any other donations since then so it's about 60 dollars per donation I'm thinking right before we go on summer break they may pick up another small donation so it really is um I believe it's a good investment because one is the food goes to people who need it and it doesn't go to the trash but it also helps us clear out our freezes so when we return from the bread we we have enough space to store fresh and when you

say 60 dollar donation distance for clarity that I mean where we say hey come and clean us out at Azusa High School and that's 60 or okay so do they go to the different School sites and pick it up or uh is that they have like a no they go to the different School sites so what I do is when we have a donation I'll contact them I'll say I have five boxes of USDA donated chicken that I tried to serve as students and they didn't like it so they will send me what both QR codes to put on each book I scan them into the system the system registers them sends them to the food bank then they send the food back to that particular site where that's good yeah I think that's great

because you know I just hate to see food go to waste or food going to the trash but it can be given to someone that's in need that that's beautiful that's great any other comments thank you so much thank you moving to item 14.2 this is an info action item Mr Ortega thank you Dr Beau um we wanted to make this item an info uh action item so we can just take a little bit of time uh to discuss uh what this is in terms of our next level of Safety and Security we wanted to provide space for questions about this next phase um and we just wanted to make sure that the board was the board and the community were well aware of uh of this next uh piece that we are looking to

implement to again increase the Safety and Security of our schools and so I'd like to turn over to Latasha to explain um what this is thank you so yes so this is our next phase of our security infrastructure implementation um this will install intercom systems throughout all of our district offices facilities as well as our district office this intercom will be placed at the front entrance Door of our campuses allowing a visitor to be able to Ping again to say hey I'm here it allows for video communication as well as audio communication um we through this device we can actually unlock the door from either administrator's cell phone iPads or several devices it does not require one person to be stationary so I would like to share a video so we can all see exactly

what this looks like I'm going to hope that I did this correctly for audio purposes I'm gonna pause this clearly nothing is playing I appreciate Ricotta's roadmap their attention education and that they're able to let us fail it's super flexible for us we can add that we need at our own pace and that's just so this will be okay thank you um so this will be the next level of implementation um it will go in conjunction with our Access Control doors um so this will be just the added level of security go ahead okay so my question is um who's who the person's gonna be in charge at the school site that's going to be monitoring and allowing people in because that would be someone told Jose I mean if you're busy and you're yes

so that's one of the the great um aspects of the ricotta intercom system it does not have to be one designated person so I could be a site administrator walking throughout my campus and I can get the alert on my cell phone I don't have to literally be stationed in the front office um I don't know if that helps answer the question but my question okay so everyone's cell phone is going to be the secretary the principal or is there a screen that they're going to be looking at are they going to all be looking at their phone yes so we will actually install the application on um we could do it on our desktops um that's at the front desk we could also do it on tablets iPads and cell phones so we can

actually have the um application on several devices so if if we'll see the secretary walks away or the clerk you know and the principal will have it on his or hers also yes ma'am oh okay okay this is for all site all site at this rate at this rate Miss Natasha just because I asked the same question um because this is this is a piece in the global system that we have already started to implement so from the cameras to the sensors to the access controls and now this is just one piece that's going into this kind of system that were that were that we're implementing so um I think I use Murray just just to use Murray so again I walk up doors locked I'm gonna probably do some signage and some some educating

and some promotional stuff I just click on it hey I'm not a stranger to it because in my uh kids districts this is what they do um but not everybody right and so we just ping hey I'm here to pick up my kid oh Miss Ortega maybe you know if I already know I'm just gonna let them in right away um but this would add again another and we're talking about visitor management system because we're also that's another piece that's going to come into this uh this complements that whole Suite of Safety and Security any other questions may have a motion make a motion to approve 14.2 second Miss Pineda yes board members the motion passes unanimously moving to item 14.3 may have a motion question to approve 14.3 second moved and seconded is there

any discussion yeah could we elaborate on this for the community yes so this is the bid award for the path to travel which will give us um Ada access and a walking pathway um between the foothill the current Foothill Middle School which will be Azusa Timberly name Azusa East as well as the back way on the Azusa campus I guess I and I ask because we had talked about blocking off streets we had talked about you know adding cul-de-sacs we've talked about bridges and so this is where we are can we just describe what this what this will mean for uh those in the community who are or who have been tuning in this particular item yeah so this is a partnership um with the city um so we will be doing the path to

travel which will be a cement slab along the grass field of both campuses and then the city will be assisting us with the crosswalk where the students will actually safely cross from one um corner to the next to just cross um across the street so it would not be any road closures no cul-de-sacs this the walkway where the students will safely walk across during passing periods and the crosswalk would include not just the painting but also the carving now again for the ADA compliance The Carving out of the curbs because right now it's just it's a sidewalk and so carving that out to make sure that it's a it's a pathway so our students will have to travel North two blocks to use the crosswalk that's there right now uh and Latasha to uh board

member Greer's Point uh just so the community um like a sidewalk correct correct but in our property yes and correct me if I'm wrong is it eight foot ten foot okay 10 10 feet wide and so along if you're I'm sorry I'm not a visual per I'm a visual person but if you can visualize the baseball field on the back of Azusa campus it will be like an l-shape of a sidewalk that will lead you on to the main campus and if you're on Foothills campus the big outer field once you enter the gate it will be a cement path that will lead you along the fencing directly to the um first um bungalow on the campus nor uh traveling parallel to Linfield uh on the north side of the campus so think about the

corner of Rockville and Linfield that's where they will enter um the foothill side and then this walkway which is uh 10 feet will run parallel Woodland field um from that corner until you get into the interior of Foothill which is that first wing of classroom you know I wanted to ask and who will be monitoring these two um area and Azusa High right are just going to be running across the street right there no ma'am no mail so both campuses um we have um two opportunities um by the main focus will be our campus security positions that both campuses will be unemployed with okay great so I I know that this is a bid for The Pedestrian pathway and I think at a previous occasion we talked about closure or Bridge or another method of

travel I recall I asked the question about the crosswalk if it was going to be with additional reflectors or with lights or would there be a poll um lighting where someone pressed a button and I say that because this is a new crosswalk or that street and drivers are not going to be used to looking for pedestrian has that been discussed with the city can we get an update on it I will definitely I'll definitely get an update on what kind of crosswalk uh we're looking to for the city is looking to um construct there thank you yeah if there's not going to be a like there um you know the the type of crosswalk that is from uh goodness is it from like 5th 4th Street I think for Slauson they have like the

bright you know they push the button for The Pedestrian they have a big bright light coming through um is that something that is going to be brought as well I will again I will ask the city I'm not 100 sure so two blocks north uh I think to Dr Bull's point two blocks north there's a crosswalk but it's just a painted I mean that's all that's all it is and so I will ask if this new crosswalk because I don't know how frequent that crosswalk is used this one will be used actively throughout the day uh to see what kind of increase in visibility um this crosswalk will have um so I will I will ask that that that question because also I've seen a stop sign that has lights on it and then I

also seen um in the middle of the street they're they're sloshing lights you know in between I mean if they're not going to use a push button one you know there can be some kind of um then pedestrian knows like you said that it's true it's new they're not going to be no to stop or no you know if you don't know the area you you wouldn't know that any other comments by board members just a question would it be possible to get a maybe a uh I I can foresee a lot of questions coming up this uh about this and so I I would I would appreciate being able just to kind of see a mock-up I appreciate the the description of kind of what's been talked about but I I'm not even I'm

not picturing it so it might be valuable um is that something could be provided in an update for us to be able to see what what the thinking is um the current thing sure it'll be this week even if it's a picture right right a drawing a draw you could yeah those are figures are okay too thick figures okay we could do better than that though but thank you yeah and those designs are already uh complete so not not a problem is there I don't know if the city did like a traffic study or if there's data on that but maybe explore that or see if they if anything like that to look at I can I can again I can explore that with uh with the city manager in the city um I believe

originally when we were thinking um bridge tunnel like those kinds of things and yes that would be some extensive uh studying and surveilling surveillance that would have to take place but I will see what kind of what level of that for a crossbow even just like a traffic count I think they can monitor Miss Bonita um I wanted to know if when the kids are going to the back of Foothill from that crosswalk do they have to walk through the grass like every day to get to the actual campus that's a great question so this um approval of this bid award will allow for us to install cement so they could um safely walking cases a rainy day um and avoid trip hazards okay thank you you're welcome yes thank you so much board members

will vote the motion passes unanimously moving to item 14.4 may have a motion make a motion to approve 14.4 second moved and seconded is there any discussion seeing none miss me NATO yes thank you board members the motion passes unanimously 14.5 may have a motion make a motion to approve 14.5 second moved and seconded any discussion being none Miss Pinedo yes board members motion passes unanimously 14.6 may have a motion motion to approve 14.6 second moved and seconded any discussion being done Miss Pineda yeah board members motion passes unanimously 14.7 may have a motion motion to approve 14.11 second moved and seconded any discussion um I asked several questions regarding the refrigeration um I want to know um what are we doing with the refrigeration of the schools that are being closed they have freezers

and refrigerators what are we going to do with those so we're currently having an audit of all our nutrition services equipment and then once we have the conclusion of that audit with the recommendations of one the useful life for the items and work and repurpose it we're going to repurpose all the items at a location that can house it but it's our ultimate goal you're welcome did you have another question any other questions yes thank you and board members motion passes unanimously 14.8 may have a motion motion to approve 14.8 second moved and seconded any discussion being none Miss Pineda yes thank you board members motion passes unanimously moving to item 14.9 may have a motion make a motion to approve 14.9 seconds moved and seconded any discussion a real explanation on this one please

yes so we're currently a part of the San Gabriel Valley Co-op and so to ensure that the co-op it is utilizing the lowest as receiving the lowest price um per item that we're selling for our Commodities and we go out to bid as a co-op um this is for the fresh bread so this allows us to have the lower the lowest price available for the entire school year but the lowest price doesn't mean does it taste good Ness yes yes and so that that's one of the advantages of being a part of the co-op so it um we're getting great quality bread at a discounted price because there are so many districts joining forces to buy in bulk you're welcome any further discussion being none Miss Pineda yes thank you board members hope I think

through the motion pass unanimously motion passes unanimously moving to item 15.1 resolution 22 23 29 may have a motion to approve moved and seconded any discussion Ms Pineda yes thank you board members the motion passes unanimously 15.2 may have a motion second moved and seconded any discussion being none Miss Pinedo yes thank you board members the motion passes unanimously moving to items 16.1 through 16.6 these are info items uh Mr Ortega if you could give us an introduction thank you Dr Bo om on a quarterly basis the California school boards Association AKA csba provides the district uh with recommended policies regulations exhibits and bylaws uh that should be updated either because um a new Ed code a new government code a new law that has been passed by the government that needs to be enacted

and so on a quarterly basis we receive these recommendations from csba I would say 97 and above uh what you what we bring to the board um is that is exactly what the recommendation of csba is uh if there ever were to be a deviation or there has been a deviation then we would definitely call that out to the Board of Education and so this this uh this what you see here for first reading are this quarter's recommendations thank you and to our board members are there any questions for the superintendent or cabinet regarding these proposed policies and bylaws just I have a comment so I just wanted to um this is a new learning process for me but I know that when I meet with um superintendent Ortega there's several questions I have but

I really want to make the community aware that although this item comes up quarterly you said so although it comes up quarterly those that watch the board meetings um I think it's really important to look at these items because it's the changes that happen at the state legislature and and really how it's impacting the schools and policies and regulations that are changing so um I know it's it's kind of at the back of the agenda but I I really you know if you look at it like there's stuff on school safety that I mean they were talking about just changing the terminology of what you know what what defines a weapon and and you know I thought that was really good because things get overlooked and it's not we think of it maybe not as

a weapon or we don't see it because we're not familiar with what people consider weapons but um so and because we you know there's everybody's concerned about school safety so I just really wanted to and not just the safety piece but the fact that things are changing there was another item in there that um talked about the Pledge of Allegiance and things that are are very patriotic to us as a country so I just really want to encourage the community to look at these uh amendments that come through the school district because really they come from the state and there's very limited if I'm speaking correctly Authority that we have as a board so we have to look at them and um sometimes we have to agree to disagree so I just I just really

want the community to be aware of thank you Dr bull if I may put a plug um to a board member benavidus's uh comments uh just to make it known that all of our most current board policies uh can always be found on our Board of Education section of our website and so if anybody ever wanted to see what the most up-to-date policies are uh they are they are located there thank you so much moving to item 17.1 adjournment may have a motion make a motion to approve 7 17.1 second Miss Pinella yes thank you and board members before you log out please vote the motion passes unanimously we are adjourned at 902. thank you
