yes and so the motion passes or yes to one app moving on to 5.0 report action of closed session items there are no uh items or action to report which brings us to 6.0 recognition and awards and specifically 6.1 introduction of 2022 2023 student board members and i will turn to you mr ortega thank you board president i am extremely excited tonight to introduce to the board of education and to the community our three student board members for the year i have had the pleasure of interacting with our three student board members this over the course of the summer and i am going to tell you how impressed uh these dynamic student board members are we had the opportunity to attend a csba student board member training with daphne and carolina natalie was at a
a camp at uc irvine so she could not attend and we did ask for permission but they said yeah you can't really miss and so we didn't want her to miss that opportunity um we have also had previous uh recent discussions about other training opportunities that we're looking at and so next next monday we'll be coming together to discuss those and so just their enthusiasm their positivity their interest is is really really refreshing um i want to remind the board of education uh kind of the the logistics that we have with our student board members we do have a student board member from each of our high schools the meetings our board meetings are divided uh by three and one student board member attends our board meetings in person uh for the entire the entirety
of the board meeting and two student board members attend the beginning of our board meetings to give their student board member report uh and then they're free to uh to log off if they wish to to attend to other things and so it is with great pleasure that i want to introduce to you first and foremost our student board member natalie de la cruz who is from azusa high school and she will be our board member with us for the first third of our board meetings uh here in person i don't want to say much about them because in their in their board reports today they're going to talk a little bit about themselves so i don't want to give away too much so welcome to to natalie online okay yeah why not let's do
it [Applause] online i see here carolina dominguez carolina is from glaston high school so she will be virtual this first third so welcome carolina and then uh from sierra high school we have uh daphne uh daphne is also joining us virtually uh today and so welcome uh daphne her last name i'm sorry daphne pinedale from sierra high school so welcome we look forward uh to uh our journey together this year um and just as a as a as a note um i know we're gearing back up uh but uh i did tell them that uh on action items uh we probably there probably will be asked for a student preferential vote and so we talked about what a yes means and what a no means um and so um if uh the president can try
i know it's i know it's difficult sometimes to remember that thank you and welcome welcome okay then we will move to 7.0 and 7.1 specifically public comment on agenda or non-agenda items this is an opportunity for the public to address the board of education on agenda or non-agenda items individual speakers may be allowed up to three minutes to address the board of education on any agenda or non-agenda items when the public wishes to address the board on an agenda item they may fill out a blue card stand at the podium or raise their hand while in zoom attendance the board will take blue card requests first followed in order by speakers at the podium and then those in zoom attendants it does not look like we have any blue cards here and no one here
for the podium uh lika do we have anyone online with the hand raised we have no hands raised online okay then we will move to 8.0 comments reports and requests by the board of education and we will begin with board member arianes good evening everyone how are you guys doing today welcome back it's the starting of a school new school year and uh i'm really excited to start to start this new school year we have a lot that will be coming our way um we still have much to do and um i'm really excited and welcome to all the teachers and administrators that uh are coming back this this the next week full full force with the students so and students welcome back um really excited to start this year um i would like to

think about um and coming from a law enforcement team and myself uh being able to celebrate and recognize our law enforcement and first responders was particularly meaningful i know i just made a joke about hot dogs um so that is my segue um to uh ms jamal giving a a public thank you in recognition of the great dinner we had tonight the board meeting dinner catered by nutrition services department i think if that meal is any any indicator of the scratch cooking and the uh the world cuisine menu that our students can look forward to i am personally very excited and very hungry so i i would like to extend my appreciation to all of the nutrition services thank you very much board member rodriguez yes uh good evening uh good evening everyone welcome back

one thing a while i want to thank mr fernandez for including azusa beautiful to walk with the students but one thing mr pronouncer got to tell me he told me that it was going to be a one mile walk but he didn't tell me it was one mile up the hill and down the hill there's two miles and i told him i was gonna call him out today about this but that's okay i have one on him um the azusa women's club i went to the annual leadership seminar and uh super kendra ortega in his cabinet unions uh representatives from aaa csca 8fa ama all gathered in this beautiful morning again it was nice to see everyone all together having a great time they had the city of azusa manager sergio gonzalez spoke on leadership

the team and assist in the writing process of our school report finally the staff and students would love to thank you for the new paint job our campus received this summer the campus looks great thank you all for your time thank you uh board president i just want to uh take this opportunity to uh say that i'm very thankful that i had uh some really um good uh chances to engage uh with our parents and our uh community this summer some of which have already been mentioned to uh today so it was nice to move uh the board meeting and be able to participate in national night out uh very impressed with the um the attendance uh we had our mariachi uh playing there uh and it was just a good feel to see uh
community members come out and all those service organizations uh promoting um what they have to offer to our community so uh very thankful that we were able to participate in that and um engage with the community uh in addition to that uh the city of azuza um reamped their uh city uh their concerts in the park series uh so i want to give a shout out and a thank you to the all foundation um who uh has their present who had their presence there at every single concerts in the park and in addition to promoting the foundation we had an opportunity as a district to also promote our district and so i was able to attend selena the selena covered band and my family was able to uh to join me and they they had
a really good time out there dancing and it was just a good time and again to just to engage with the community and then lastly the opportunity to have one-on-one conversations and phone calls with families from all of our school sites including adult school including our special ed including our matp uh and just connecting uh with with uh folks and and talking about highlights talking about uh how we can be more supportive uh talking about their experiences over the summer and how excited we are to see them this up-and-coming school year um and so i'm just very thankful that people took the time to uh carve out a couple of minutes and spend time with me for the uh phone calls that went out to families uh from powell ellington uh and uh gladstone uh
took a little extra uh time to speak to them about school reorganization and the transition plan to make sure that they understood what the transition plan was if they had any questions any clarity around that so again just very thankful for the opportunity that the community gives me to be able to uh to have these conversations with them thank you good evening board of education staff and community uh last week i was also i also had the opportunity to attend the asusa national night out event i was super impressed uh with just how well organized the event was and it was very very cool just to be a part of the community and just interact uh thank you that was that was outstanding later this week we have our annual new teacher orientation it's on
thursday from 8 to 12 in the pdc room b this is a wonderful opportunity for us to welcome our new teachers for the upcoming year to asusa we really do try to roll out the red carpet and have names or rather faces placed to names and so that is this thursday i want to thank our aea partners our executive board for partnering with us for this event and really help the district make this a special event for our teachers by providing lunch for for our teachers on that day thank you good evening i am happy to announce i'm going to stay on the train of nutrition services for this evening and i'm happy to announce that our district is 100 district-wide cep um funding which means even though all of our students and families eat
um free for this year we actually qualify to get the highest reimbursable rate that is out there so i'm happy i want to thank um our consultant deborah amos as well as in collaboration with ms stella on their efforts on submitting the application and all that's required for us to get that approval and lastly i want to share we will be having an iron chef competition where our lunch teams will be actually creating meal items that will be served on august 12th at glaston high school we will be judging and the item that wins will actually be a menu item in the fall so thank you good good evening uh we are pleased to report that we had over 1800 students participate in our summer learning programs this summer it was very exciting to see
the enormous interest and being able to serve that many students we received a lot of positive feedback from staff and students about the curriculum that they utilized in the classroom and the opportunity to engage in really hands-on problem-based learning so that was wonderful i also had the opportunity to attend the azusa live summer library mini carnival and again back to the nutrition services just a shout out to them for the wonderful barbecue that they provided and it's nice to to see these events start to come back in person thank you well now we will move to 10.0 general functions and first 10.1 approval of 2022 2023 board meeting calendar before i turn this over to you mr ortega i'll just uh want to remind the the board based on the conversation that we had at
our uh recent governance meeting that i i hope that we can very quickly get through this one and then we can get into the to the business of other things that are on the agenda but there are a couple items that we have on here that it would be good for us to review on our calendar three in particular absolutely um so i will start off with the board governance board governance right now is slated to take place on october 11th so looking to see if we can get consensus to move that to october 25th um in talking to miss pride who was uh our facilitator last time um she is not available on the 11th she is available on the 25th and so uh based on the feedback of the facilitator i think i
recommend that it would be a good thing to continue uh with the same person and so looking to see if there's a consensus to move governance from 11 10 11 to 10 25. any objections to that we can move that one okay um the second um uh item uh a point discussion is uh board president greer and myself as we were looking at the calendar we did notice that in september uh our september month is uh an anomaly compared to other months uh in that we have an additional board meeting uh slated in in that month and so we were uh coming to the board of education uh uh to see if uh we can move forward with the recommendation to cancel the september sixth board meeting to be in line with the other in
the pattern of the other in the pattern of the other months if you will i'm fine with that or we have not okay so that yeah consensus to cancel that and then the last one uh is in january uh right now on january 17th we have a study session typically we reserve that study session for our mid-year outcap and our update on the governor's budget proposal but we have seen from school services that typically they are giving that presentation somewhere around the second or third week of january and so to provide the best information possible we are asking or seeking to move the january 17th meeting to january 31st any objections fine i'm fine with that so yeah so that's consensus on all three of those would it be possible to have to ensure that
our our calendars are updated by the end of this week to reflect these changes calendars absolutely and also if they can please um change on the calendar that you don't have the district calendar and here please thank you absolutely so because this is an info action does this require actual action okay we'll go we'll go and take action then on this is there does does anyone make want to make a motion to reflect these this concept i make a motion you want to read them individually or not i like to make a motion that on september the 6th that we will cancel that meeting that board meeting on um october the 11th governance meeting moved to 10 october 25th and on january 17th move that to january 31st i like to make a motion that
we um make these adjustments on our this calendar sorry second so moved by board member rodriguez pena second by board member arianes any additional discussion hearing none we will move to a vote student preferential vote oh yeah all right thank you now we will move to a vote and the motion passes four yes to one absent moving on then to 10.2 approval of consultant agreement between azusa unified school district and dr jessica y fong wang is there a motion to approve make a motion to approve 10.2 seconds moved by board member rodriguez payne rodriguez pena seconded by board member arianis any additional discussion uh mr tiger can you please have an explanation on this consultant please absolutely um so um as we know school reorganization uh one of the decisions the board of education made
was that azusa high school would keep its colors it would keep its name and it would keep the aztec as part of the name as well but that the current mascot would have to be changed um and so per the request of the board of education uh that was going to be two prong one prong is that we bring together a committee to look at this particular decision to make a decision that then comes to the board of education but that we would have a facilitator who's not part of the committee who's not a decision maker who is not coming with a bias or an interest but that would help us and the committee navigate this particular decision and so uh we had the great opportunity to be connected with uh uh a professor uh
dr one from azusa pacific university um it's nice that uh you know as part of our community uh she has written on topics uh around uh racialization of images and mascots and so we feel this is a good fit we had a really good conversation she's excited to roll up her sleeves and help us facilitate this committee again she's the facilitator she's not part of the committee any additional discussion student preferential vote yes then we will move to a vote and the motion passes four yes to one zero uh to one absent excuse me moving on then to 10.3 approval of resolution two two two three zero three to initiate the establishment of a facilities advisory 711 committee is there a motion to approve make a motion to approve 10.3 seconds moved by board member
rodriguez pena seconded by board member arianis any discussion mister digger can you please explain the 711 committee because i know that we do have a 7-eleven committee already right but this is for something different that is correct so this resolution uh provides the direction uh to staff to initiate uh beginning to put together a 7 11 committee for the purposes of the surplus property that we will have as a result of the school reorganization decisions that we have taken as as a board granted right now currently not all of the surplus property is empty right we're still using them but because this is a journey uh that we're going to be on uh starting now lines us up to to decisions closer to when they actually will become uh vacant so this resolution provides that
direction for us to begin to put a 7-11 committee together uh board member rodriguez pena to your point uh we did have a 7-eleven in azusa unified school district uh years back but that was a specific and limited to gladstone street the decision around grassland street and mountain view and so this broadens the scope but does envelope um those two properties that were vacant because of the previous decision and they would be in application process uh that is correct so once we get the direction uh uh from the board then we begin an application process uh we begin to advertise we are looking to um we know that community members have a vested interest who might not have students in our uh district so we are looking to advertise and get to those homes via
mailers and looking at possibly like the paper and public places like library senior citizen community center right those kinds of places as well to advertise and have in in public and public places uh also board members all right yes um so what you're saying is that um we're reaching out into the community to be able to um you know that this committee consists of individuals who don't have students in our district uh people who did have students in our district um pretty much anybody can is it going to be a ratio of how many like teachers or how many parents how many stakeholders is there a ratio of individuals that will be in this yeah good question and so yes the purpose of reaching out to people who don't have kids in our uh currently
in our district is because the 7011 committee is comprised of seats if you will and we do have uh sarah pulido here with us so she can uh chime in if if i botch this up but there are seats um that we strive for to have on the 7-eleven committee and some of those seats can very well be individuals that currently do not have uh students uh in our in our school district so yes the advertising would be to say hey you might be interested uh because maybe you live by one of the schools or again this is something that you want to provide a volunteer service and so you want to get involved in that in that manner but the point is yes to get to those folks who typically maybe uh are not
on a peach jar don't follow our social media you know those kinds of things so that they understand that there's this opportunity to get involved and in our pocket can you please give us a sample of the application because i know you gave it to us before so we know what it looks like absolutely and along with that application um well you have a description of the commitment that that people that are that are interested have an idea what they're getting themselves into and if they're able to commit prior to actually being picked and then later not being able to commit absolutely thank you and just one question because you said that so is this 7-eleven a committee um do they they all can be in there like two years because the other sibling committee
right there they only sit there for a certain amount of time i'm gonna ask miss uh polito to uh answer that question yes yes i'm happy to answer hi to the board and to the cabinet i'm it's a pleasure to be with you this evening um i'm sarah palito i was able to meet with many of you um in the spring when we presented about surplus property but it's great to see most of you again um in response to your question about the timeline for the committee the way that that works generally is that the committee is appointed after the applications process and then the board then will designate specific properties for review by the committee so they can it can last for any amount of time that is appropriate depending on the number of
properties that are being reviewed and the scope of that review um so there's no precise timeline about how long the committee lasts it's really based on the number of properties assigned for review by the committee um what comes from the board and sarah what i meant by that is the people that are selected they will sit there the whole time till it is complete or do they change at all the goal is um ultimately for um for the disposition of a single property the goal is to have the same committee members through the process um and that usually happens um again depending on the number of sites here we have six and so there will be a number of meetings um but there's usually an introductory meeting with an explanation of uh the matters that
will um you know things like um uh the public records act and the brown act those types of rules that were got uh that will govern those meetings then we do introduction about the specifics of the individual sites um the committee will draft a report with recommendations that will go to the board um that usually takes several months to complete for a single property um and so to answer your questions specifically the goal is to have the same members to kind of follow a single property from start to finish thank you will these meetings be live broadcasted on our youtube now and but recorded definitely can be yeah [Music] and to add to that uh the meetings are public uh they're conducted under um much the same rules that board meetings are conducted um there
are public hearings that are held within these meetings and they're always made available to the public i i want to stress too the main goal within the education code of the 7-eleven committee is to facilitate and solicit feedback from the community so we will do everything we can in that capacity to make sure that the community has access to those meetings to provide input any other questions student preference student preferential vote yeah all right then we will move to a formal boat it's not refreshed on the screen but i can see the motion passes four yes to one absent which brings us to uh area 11.0 and specifically 11.1 which is approval of the can of all of the consent calendar items is there a motion to approve 11.1 second and there will be no
discussion 11.1 through 11.20 or just 11.1 encompasses all the others so uh yeah just a little 11.1 and so with that we will go ahead and move to a vote is there a student preferential vote all right then we'll move up and that motion passes or yes to one absent and so we will move to 13.0 business and finance beginning with 13.1 approval of consultant agreement between azusa unified school district and melissa manning dba my school rd is there a motion to approve 13.1 second move by board member ariana second by board member rodriguez pena any discussion yes you please explain what melissa manning will be doing yes happily so we would be utilizing um the state one-time funds that we're getting for nutrition services called kit funds and we will um become miss melissa
will be coming on board to train all of our nutrition services staff on scratch cooking no more processed food potentially any other questions discussion back to the real grilled cheese yes my favorite student preferential vote all right then we'll move to a formal vote and the motion passes four yes to one absent which brings us to 13.2 approval of filing of notice of completion for gym floor and trellises at azusa high school question to approve 13.2 second moved by board member adiana second by board member rodriguez pena any discussion what is a time frame for for this to be completed so phase one is completed and the gym floor is currently being utilized and then after um the discussion um with our consultant i was um approved tonight then we will go to phase two
which will be adding a logo to the actual gym floor and we're going to wait until until the decision is made and then we will be putting the logo down yes we will agree and then as soon as that happens how long do you think that will take i could not speculate at that time looking probably like next year not sure not sure i don't want to say it's going to take long it could take quickly it just all depends on the time of the contractor any other discussion question student preference yeah okay then we'll move to a vote i really would like to go in and see that for the picture looks really pretty the colors and everything maybe someday we can go take a look at it yes ma'am and that motion passes
four yes to one absent which brings us to 13.4 approval of filing of notice for painting of valley dale elementary school the president on 13.3 excuse me thank you approval of filing of notice of completion for resurfacing asphalt at azusa unified school district district office motion to approve 13.3 second move by board member adiana second by board member rodriguez pena any discussion student preference and we will move to a vote and that motion passes four yes to one absent now moving to 13.4 approval of filing of notice of completion for painting of valley dale elementary school is there a motion to approve 13.4 second moved by board member ariana second by board member rodriguez pena any discussion question student preference and we will move to a vote and the motion passes four yes to one
absent moving to 13.5 approval of opening a clearing account for fund 11.0 adult education question to approve 13.5 second move by board member ariana second by board member rodriguez pena any discussion student preference then we'll move to a vote and that motion passes four yes to one absent moving to 13.6 approval of agreement between a zeus unified school district and fortress armed services company is there a motion a commotion to approve 13.6 second move by board member rodriguez pena second by board member ariana's any discussion student preference yeah then we'll move to a vote and the item passes 4 yes to 1 absent moving to 13.7 approval of bid for award for asphalt project is there a motion make a motion to approve 13.7 second move by board member rodriguez pena second by board member
