participated in 18-week virtual peer radiation group boot camp now they are certified to become peer mediators the mediation root camp teaches students to social and emotional skills self-awareness self-management social awareness and relationship building responsibilities decision decision making who this is to help students in need are students of their own their own peers um i think that they probably relate more to this their own peers and they would probably administrator or even their parents and i think it's great that these students have learned to to work with students of their peers and their they have the opportunity to reach out to them and you know if they feel a need or they want to stick to someone so i want to congratulate all the students who received their um certificate and last week i also attended

a four-day wjc training in pasadena and received a certificate with board president arianes it was a very well organized very well attended by others in the um not necessarily the san diego valley bills also mayor may the mayor from bell was also there i myself learned a lot from train from this training it was great to see others administrators consoles from azusa unified school district the majority of them were from um slauson middle school we all had we had uh listening circles and self-reflections about ourselves when you know what others have gone through you learn to respect them um in a different way students from gladstone high came his feet to our group i was so proud that these students were from ausd and they spoke to how they use their training this one young

man really touched me my heart by saying that you know he also uses his mediation with his friends you know he if he sees the friends that are having a conflict or even in his own home that he he's learned he said he's learned what to do to help them and i think i was very proud of him that he doesn't just only he's a senior he said i'm not going to be in school any longer so you know i will use it in my own he said i'm going to go out to work someday and i know that i'm going to be maybe dealing with the conflict or whatever but this is what he learned and he's using it outside of the school environment um as i said everyone has a story to tell

and um this morning during my walk it was so beautiful to see by murray school i mean new people were there and students were there they were so excited to go to school and it was just nice to see people in in front of the school waiting to get in front for summer school so it looked here to my tears to my eyes just to see you know after 15 months i've never seen anyone when i walked in the morning today i seen all these kids and the moms really excited to go to school so i want everyone just to have a great summer and be safe thank you thank you for that um my report is i i i did attend the the certificate the graduation of uh certification of our students that did

take the course this last year um at uh asusa and gladstone and um last year when they came to present in the summer i had asked the the director um and i had asked dr dana mitchell how how how can i go how how can can the board go and so during this time um during the the at the end um after the presentation of certificates um the director came up to me and said hey you're the board member that wanted to come these are the dates next week and so um uh dana put it in our thursday board packet um and so i i did attend last week and it was an amazing experience to be able to share this with our teachers and for our own students to come and present um we

had the the young man that um board member rodriguez pena was uh talking about also shared that through this process of learning these tools that now he wants to become a psychologist and he wants to get his bachelor's and his masters and he wants to you know to do this and so one of the questions that i asked him was you know how would you um what would you suggest to susan unified to to make this a a better program and he stood quiet for a little bit and his dad was sitting right in the in back of all of us and this young man said i wish i would have received these lifelong tools in middle school his dad was just in tears because it really did help him shape him and he said

i wouldn't have gone through the stuff perhaps that i did go through if i learned these tools of conflict conflict resolution communication mediation and just being able to to to have these tools to have better relationships and so that was powerful to me not only as an attendee myself but as a school board member and so um i i can't wait to you know what what for this year um we did we did attend with uh slauson middle school teachers kudos to them they they um you know they were amazing and i know that other schools went this last this week i think they're there and so i just wanted to emphasize um i think we're we're on the right track and bringing this program together here at our school district and i'm i'm really

happy that we have adopted this program and that's all i have for for today um moving on to 8.1 we have comments and reports by superintendent cabinet and student board members at this time student board members are not here because it is summer is that correct we can check with sam do we have um any of the student board members present there are no student board members present at this time okay then we'll go ahead and turn it over to um our superintendent and cabinet numbers so the business team is currently working on closing out the 2021 fiscal year um at the same time we're working and fulfilling audit requests so our auditors will be on site starting next week to actually audit our financial transactions and our financial operations um and with the close

out to be projected to be on the december 4 meeting of their findings thank you even though i'll say this in my presentation a little later just want to take the time to invite uh our parents our community uh to our school reorganization meeting uh happening this week on thursday at 6 pm it will be the english um meeting and at 7 30 it will be the spanish meeting thank you good evening i am super excited to announce that our music staff has been hard at work planning a summer music camp that will be held august 4th through the 13th it will be for fourth through 12th graders and it's no cost to students they're going to offer a variety of classes like boomwhackers band brass choir orchestra percussions strings and woodwinds can you hear

0162021 california school dashboard local indicators presentation and we have miss jennifer eddie bryant i'll turn it over to you there we go all right thanks for your patience good evening president arianes board members mr ortega and cabinet members i'm very excited to be here again with you this evening to share with you and our public about our california school dashboard local indicators the state of california has been shifting some timelines and requirements for the local indicators this year we will actually present the local indicators to you at the same meeting as the lcap approval which is scheduled for later on in the agenda and then in the fall we will upload our local indicators to the california school dashboard and then the dashboard will be published sometime around the first of december and as you

may or may not know the california school dashboard is part of our state's new accountability system um it's been a little bit off in these last couple years with the covid impact but there are still some things being published and next year these local indicators that i'll show this evening will be part of what will be shared the local indicators really allow districts to use multiple measures to to see how we are performing on the eight state priorities in education and as a quick review you can see on this slide the eight state priorities um these are used to develop our goals spending and as well as our accountability measures uh based on on these eight eight uh care uh categories so on the california school dashboard there are really two types of indicators if

i can step back and just give you a brief review there are state indicators this is data that's pulled by the state automatically and colored performance levels are developed from from that data and then the other part of the california dashboard is the local indicators and these are district measures of progress there are three ratings levels of the rating system uh met not met are not met for two or more years and these are developed and then submitted to the dashboard by each district this slide gives you a little bit of a cross section and reference of the state priorities and then the state indicators on the dashboard and the local indicators on the dashboard it are it is the five indicators that you see they're circled that we'll be discussing this evening when the

california dashboard is published this is what the landing page looks like these are 2019 results and the california dashboard as a whole really has three key messages those are first that the quality education is defined by more than just a single number kind of what we were doing in the past and the dashboard was created to to provide a more comprehensive look at schools and districts the second key message is that equity must be sought all students all the time so each student group has a color gauge on our state indicators as well as um overall uh indicators and finally the dashboard really supports local decision-making and so that's why we have those local indicators that you see there on that landing page page the ones with the blue labels under each so this evening

i'm going to review those local indicators that will be part of our 21 2021 california school dashboard for azusa just a quick review of the process districts first decide upon how they're going to gather data for their local indicators there are some options the state provides they decide how they can actually use the local indicator data for their own purposes they then report on each of the indicators to the board of education what we're doing this evening and then finally upload to the california school dashboard and the community to see now this step right here outlined in purple is really the power behind the data the local indicators are required by law but the compliance uh the compliance steps are not nearly as powerful as what we're doing with our local data and so it

is used to help develop our lcap and even though schools don't have local indicators our local schools can look at our district-wide local indicators to help them look at for areas of strength and need uh for their school plans and so just like all data the power lies in what we're going to do with it and that's why it's it's so important to not just upload this and and share but also use it in our our continuous cycle of improvement so let's go ahead and look at the areas that we'll be reporting priority one is uses our williams settlement reports and we report our appropriately assigned teachers all teachers those that are serving english learners as well as any vacant positions we also report on our level of students who have access to standards aligned

textbooks for use at home and at school and then also looking at our facilities how many of our facilities are meeting the good repair standard and so here are the results for our 2021 dashboard the next local indicator deals with priority two it's the implementation of state standards and we use a self-reliant reflection tool to assess our progress in measuring our implementation the progress falls into one of the five categories that you see here on the left and then the rating that each area gets is not a good or bad but rather a level of progress for a district as you can see from exploring and researching implementation to full and sustained and so as we look at averages for these five areas you can see the results there and we met that local indicator

the next priority three is parent and family engagement and again a self-assessment tool is used to gauge how well we are encouraging parent participation how well we are partnering with our parents in decision making the three focus areas are those that you see here how well we are building family and school relationships how how we are building partnerships uh with families for student outcomes and then how we are seeking input for decision making the average rating there is uh reflected and in addition to the uh of the the ratings um that you see on the screen there's also a narrative that goes along with this and this presentation is a summary of a larger local indicators progress report that was part of the agenda item and shared with you and will be shared with the

public the next area is school climate and the two areas that we look at for this local indicator is school safety perceptions and our sense of connectedness you can see the the data quantitative data there from our district annual youth truth survey and again we also write a narrative that describes our progress in these areas priority seven is how we are providing access to our students to a broad course of study and just to define for you what a broad course of study is it's defined by encode and for elementary students a broad course of study includes english math social science science visual and performing arts health physical education and any other board prescribed studies and for our secondary students a broad course of study includes english math social science science foreign language visual and

performing arts applied arts which are the arts that are tailored to create something rather than just art for aesthetic purposes career tech education is is one of the broad course of study areas physical education and then any other board prescribed studies and so we report on the data uh on our progress in providing the broad course of studies to all students we we take time to interpret and and gather meaning from it and then also how we might use that data uh in our in our district and so here's here's the data that will be reported in an example of our interpretation uh as we look at how we are offering a broad course of study to students and then some of the uses of this data that we use to offer for example additional

courses those are some of the things you might find in the lcap as well as extended time for learning through extended school days so this concludes my uh presentation to you this evening on the local indicators if you have any questions or comments i can address them now thank you jennifer for your presentation we'll go ahead and start off with board member career he has a few questions just a question on on slide number 14 school climate the the two areas that we're evaluating are school safety perceptions and sense of connectedness and it says that the the that this priority area is is determined to have been met but looking at those numbers um especially under the area of sense of connectedness and i know we talked about this a little bit last last week

uh briefly but looking at these numbers it just makes me wonder what is the what is the bar the target that we have that that we would look at some of these numbers and determine that they're met well thank you board member greer um i'm going to share the unusual way the state does align met not met or not met for two or more years and and essentially this is a local indicator and we get to set our own um set our own metric goals and and targets and in our our lcap we do have those targets those are the targets that we use this met on the local indicators is triggered when a district actually submits and uploads their local indicators and then movement towards some sort of target is done within um but

it doesn't determine on the local indicator whether we've met or not met and i hope that makes sense it's a it's a little more complex but we do report progress towards our target in our lcap and in the lcap annual update yeah it would be um maybe apart from this it would be helpful to know what what are those targets that we're that we're aiming for here so that we know locally you know some of this i mean it talks about perceptions and so so perceptions are are things that need to be contended with or is a sense you know a sense that one has of connectedness these are potentially nebulous things to to try to get the data on but but if we're looking at and saying you know 36 percent of our students

feel as though i gather rate highly on that that particular area or is 36 the target is is the target uh you know 100 are we what is that even if we look at iterative goals what what are the what are the steps that we're hoping to to move toward that that would be helpful to have a better sense of i can report that we do report that through our lcap metrics these are two of our metrics within our lcap and that those uh targets are indicated in the lcap for they've been part of our prior lcap and we have new targets um for the new 20 21 24 l cap as well i can look those up unfortunately you don't have to send them not now if you were to send those in later

and i'm able to even look them up on the lcap as well but if you could send that in that would be on a update that would be great no problem i just have a clarification question so you did i hear you just say that that the action of uploading our our our report that we met the standard yes so i think i would like to see some more clarity about that in terms of what the guidance from the state right um sure um because it would seem to me they would make that that the local indicators are being based on the performance standard right and whether or not we met a performance standard or not right around those local indicators and not that we uploaded a document um so we could just get more

clarity about that piece and to enter into adrian's point right is that i think you know it's easy for districts to just say okay we met all the local indicators it's a lot harder for us to say look we if 36 of our high school students do not feel connected do we really feel like we can say that we're meeting this standard so so kind of like a a uh baseline to kind of have a baseline get that target baseline comparing to what it actually is yes um i think the detail might be addressed in the narrative that goes along with the dashboard um having submitted this for schools it is one it's a light switch on switch off by inputting any data into the dashboard the state says okay you've met it if a

district didn't submit anything then it's an automatic not that there's no qualifying um so i think the meat of it is in the ltap and also in the narrative that goes along with whatever data the district decides to submit and that gets the part of your question yeah i also agree with adrian i was going to ask the same question because 36 percent looks very very low but what are we meeting compared to what and um i mean even even in the middle school and you know the the uh school safety perception and the sense of connections it's very those are very important very valid um school climate that these figures are very low but what does it compare to that's my question so our comparison um these are we can't compare the data on

the youth truth survey to our previous district survey because they're two different surveys so we will use the youth truth as our baseline and then our target is to at least within uh the next three years to increase for example the connectedness uh our elementary students up to ninety percent moving our middle school students to sixty 60 and our high school students to 50 percent now that's a target not a goal because the goal is 100 we want all of our students feeling that way targets and then also my second question was so um can we compare that to last year or the year before or is has it changed has it gotten better has it been the same yes i just have to see that just you know when you get time please okay

thank you just another question jennifer then in terms so if if the state goes towards standardizing the um the tool measurement tool and they start using the california health healthy the chicks right right because there's a piece of legislation that's that's proposing that right would would you anticipate what is this article data question would you anticipate that we would continue using youth truth survey even if the state's saying okay for the dashboard we're going to use chicks now i absolutely we're going to continue to use youth data um and i think this is it it is a baseline year um and i think what is what what's interesting also is that um to what extent has the pandemic um you know uh created this sense of uh you know this this lack of connectedness um

it's definitely an area to work on and this is i mean this is these are two really great pieces um the other the other piece of triangle this data is is with the listening circles right where we can really dig in um and then in terms of looking at the lcap what is it that we're doing to help promote some of the you know the connectedness i mean right so i mean i'll just give a quick example um work with western justice center that's one strand right work in terms of increasing collagen qualities all of these things that are lcap that we put in there to say here are some of these goals and things that we're doing so i'm going to say to answer your question yeah absolutely we continue to use it and

if the state says you only need to use checks well then we'll use that too any more questions for purpose thank you jennifer for your presentation and for the follow-ups that the board has has asked and now we're going to go ahead and move to item 9.2 approval of the 2021 through 2024 local control and accountability plan the lcap and lcap addendum can i please get a motion to move 9.2 so moved we have a first by board member bo can i please get a second we have a second by board member grier if we can go ahead and bring this to vote i'm trying to find it sorry i found it and it passes 5-0 we'll move on to item number 9.3 approval of the district's 20 21 2022 budget can i please get

a motion to move 9.3 it's removed we have a first by board member bo second we have a second five board member rodriguez pena any discussion seeing that there's none let's go ahead and move towards loading this and it passes five zero we're moving on to nine point four school reorganization update and i'll go ahead and transfer it to mr arturo ortega president um we'd like to give the board an outfit on where we are with the school reorganization process this is for information and updates only uh so again our objective is just to update uh you all on our process and wherever we are uh just a quick recap uh we assembled the team uh back in the fall that team was half parents half staff on the parents side we divided it half

elementary half secondary on the staff side we divided by thirds a third admin a third ada and a third csea and we began to meet in november the district uh took uh four potential models uh to the school reorganization too uh we were very clear that this was just a starting and another point or form did it have to be one of these four models uh we said okay there could be a model five six seven eight nine ten uh this was just a starting point for the team after uh many uh team uh meetings uh the team came up with some recommendations uh these recommendations uh were presented to the board of education uh staff um at that meeting um communicated that we were in agreement with these recommendations that were coming from the

team and the recommendations basically were that they no longer wanted to look at models one or two they just wanted to look at models three and four but there were some changes that they were contemplating for the models the metaphor was simple but they did not like the districts where before where was 612 schools um they wanted the schools to be 7 12. in model 3 they wanted to talk more and discuss should there be a tk or no tk8 in model three they wanted to discuss should there be two middle schools or one middle school they wanted to discuss if there was going to be two high schools if there were going to be two high schools or one high school and they want to talk about should these be tk5 or tk6s in

addition to the models they also want us to reconsider support staff they want to provide they want us to provide an accelerated implementation timeline uh the timeline that the district approached the team was a five-year phase-out phase in um and they wanted that to go quicker um and they wanted to consider talk about should this be implemented implemented in 21 22 or 22-23 uh as a result of these recommendations on this work uh it ended up being that for model 3 they landed on yes they should be tk-6s uh for the tk8 they decided yes there should be one tk8 for one middle school or two middle schools they decided there should be one middle school for one high school or two high schools they decided it would be one high school um we did

reconsider support staff and present that to the team we did provide an accelerated timeline and that was a three-year timeline and uh before we got to considering the implementation should be 2122 2223 uh the board provided guidance uh that we should uh implement in 2223. once the models were identified and we knew and we had clarity on model 3 and model 4. the district then came with a model 3 and a model 4 that was newly constructed by the team and we said these are the sites that we would recommend would stay open and these are the sites that would eventually uh be closed uh we did communicate to the team that our recommendations were based on capacity that's how we came to our decision but we were very transparent with the team to say

obviously there's lots of ways to look at this uh for example we can look at it in terms of north south east west and so maybe that's important to someone on a team that the schools be kind of equally distributed amongst the uh the quadrants of the city another way of looking at it could be border versus not border to somebody maybe border schools are more important to keep open uh versus uh inside uh and a plethora of other ideas uh the teams then the team members i apologize then had an opportunity to create their own ideas we came with an idea and they were able to create an idea or ideas of their own uh team members uh took that to heart and got to work rolled up their sleeves and many uh ideas

for model 3 were born and some ideas for model 4 were born each team member had an opportunity to present their idea to the team and explain why they chose the sites that they chose what was behind that there was also an opportunity for the team to ask questions clarifying questions uh thank you mr robinson for this idea but explain to me one more time why did you choose this school because i'm not clearly understanding that and then mrs rodriguez would have an opportunity to discuss and say this is why this is my thought behind that after that meeting because this was the first time that people were putting their ideas out for everyone um each team member then had an opportunity to do one of four things after listening to everyone's ideas they had

an opportunity to go back and revise their thinking if for whatever reason they were inspired or they saw something that triggered a different thought process and so they can revise their thinking they can say after listening to everybody i want to keep my thinking they can say after listening to everybody these ideas are way better i love these ideas better than mine i want to remove my thinking or if a board member i'm sorry if if a team member did not create an idea but were inspired to create an idea then a new idea can be created those revisions deletions creations were brought back to another meeting and everything was then represented to the team after several meetings uh discussing and talking about the oh by the way all four of those examples came came

to life some people revised her thinking some people removed their thinking some people kept the thinking and some people brought new thinking to the table so all four of those options were were implemented um after a series of meetings and conversations the team decided uh that they that they were going to narrow it down keep it in my lapel sam does that sound better yeah you're sounding a little bit better okay uh the team decided they were going to narrow down uh the ideas that were on the table and so at a meeting that's exactly what happened model 3 was narrowed down to four ideas you can see them here 3 10 3 1 3 8 and 3 3 as they are named and for model 4 it was narrowed down to two models model

four four point four and idea four point five mr ortega can can you explain that again yeah so what the decimal the numbers with decimals what do those represent 100 so each team member uh had an opportunity to rank the different model three ideas and so they were they were able to say this is my number one this is my number two my number three four five six seven eight nine and for model four they do the same thing this is my number one my number two my number three my number four so they write the the models every team member's uh ranking then was averaged out and of course because number one was their favorite model in this case the lower the score the better the lower the average the better that particular um

idea had so you would see here that in 3.10 the average score was a 3.72 so on average people scored it um again obviously there's a lot of numbers involved here but the average score was 3.72 unlike i where at the bottom their average score was 5.83 and so the team was allowed to look at this data and then decide based on this data how many ideas we're going to move forward and so the thinking here was that uh well oh someone came out right away and said well it's obvious it should only be three point seven two and three point eight nine then move forward then somebody would chime in and say well i think 4.83 should also move forward because it's not a five and then somebody else will check in but 5.06

is so close and so amongst themselves they discussed the data and decided where to draw the line and the draw and the line was drawn after d in model 4 there are two sets of decimals and the reason there are two sets of decimals because there were only four models looking at 2.06 through 2.89 that could be a little uh difficult to differentiate differences and so those scores were doubled uh to show to show a bigger difference between the the categories between the the average scores and again they were able to decide themselves uh where they were going to draw that line mr ortega for i'm going to speak for myself it's going way over my head um i i would ask that um you could provide the board and also the public posting on

our website more of a abbreviated narrative that explains with with labels what what the decimals represent and what the ranking system is so that if someone popped on at this point in the process um they could follow that summary and better understand what these numbers mean a thousand percent i will check our summary for that day to see to see how we have summarized that um on that particular day because all the videos and the summaries are posted but i'll double check how that's working thank you okay no no i agree with sabrina because i'm i'm lost with all these decimals and stuff i should i get it one more time follow me okay i think uh uh i think it's important for example you know just that we have clarity and that the the

public has clarity and i think just seeing the decimals on both sides them not having labels on top it just is model three so which one's the model three which one was the ranking i i think that's where perhaps the confusion um comes into play and what is abc like this would be like a key perhaps to you know and on top of um the columns just differentiate what it is and then kind of like have a key explaining um what this all means because we're looking at numbers and and um i'm now understanding it more and more because i've been watching the meetings and i've been watching what you guys been doing but i think like you know to to to the board members that have just spoken it you know i think we

want um it to be a little more clear for for the public to be able to go onto our website and say oh you know yeah i understand without having a robust explanation um given to them they can go ahead and clearly see that i i would agree and then the abc's or the models yes or no oh um so if you can imagine this with 3.10 3.1 3.8 and 3.3 blacked out so when the team saw this 3.10 3.1 3.8 and 3.3 these four models were here were blacked out they were hidden just like these down here you don't see these models down here so they were hidden and instead of calling them out 3.10 3.1 3.8 3.3 they were assigned a letter a b c d e f g h i okay and

he'll make this whole thing okay that answers my question you like numbers yeah when the team and this was on purpose and we got a lot of positive feedback for this i got a lot of a lot of compliments about this what we wanted to do is we wanted to move the team away from falling in love with their model or their idea and so we didn't want them to know which model it was they knew it was a model but they had no idea which model they knew b was a model but they had no idea which model was b and so then the conversation could be about the data and the data only because if we were to to show the models then adrian's favorite model could have been 5.33 and so now

adrian is going to be pushing well i think we should take the top seven models that's a possibility because that's what happens because we're human and so we wanted to to to focus their attention on just the numbers and the data so you with this slide yep you're not intending to necessarily describe or explain for us what these models are you are describing the process through which it was narrowed down that is correct okay so the a the a through i and the a through d is not super helpful for for us or for for anyone watching that was there to to allow for blind justifying to let you know that the team went through a process to narrow these down got it all right because we had nine ideas for model three four ideas

for model four there had to come a point in time where we had to keep narrowing down and narrowing down narrowing down and so they narrowed it down to four model threes and two model fours after these were narrowed down the team asked for some potential benefits and drawbacks for programs budget and support and we spent three meetings going over these possibilities with the team the team itself wanted to check itself and do a quick pull uh they were very clear that they did not want this to be a a a matter of record they didn't want this to be official they amongst themselves just wanted to know where everyone stood so far and so they requested that we do a quick pull of the team and you see here the results of that sixty

percent of the team at this point in time when there was a quick pull uh we're leaning towards a model four forty percent of the team was leaning towards model 3. again they were very clear that they did not want this data to say this is where the team sits or this is an official recommendation from the team they just wanted a quick straw poll of where they were at at our last meeting the team then said it was time to narrow down these four ideas to one idea and these two ideas to one idea and so consistent with this first data set the team narrowed down that model 3 would be 3.10 and model 4 would be 4.4 and that's those two models are these models right here so the team has now narrowed

it down to two models and these are the models here so model three here that you see here again internally we call it 3.10 and the model 4 that you see here is model 4.4 so the team has now narrowed it down to these two models there are no other ideas on the table these are the now the official two ideas that are left but the team said we the team are not ready to weigh in on which model we prefer what the team has requested is that we hold the parent community meetings on thursday uh which we plan to launch a survey at that time as well they want to see the data from that survey they have also requested that we that we resurvey the staff and we had told them that we

were planning to do that anyway because when we surveyed the staff we did not have as much as information as we have now they want to be able to see that data as well and when they reconvene they will be ready to weigh in on model 3 versus model 4. that's where the team stands and so the way it was the way it happened at our last meeting um it looks as if these are the next steps and i say looks as if because again this is dynamic it's moving but this is where it seems to be going um we will have a parent community meeting this thursday we will land we will launch a parent community survey uh we will re-survey uh staff we will have a final one final school reorganization team meeting

for the team to weigh in on model 3 and model 4 and then we begin the board of education process we have been uber transparent and uber communicative almost at every meeting that this team is not a decision-making team that they are recommending body i said i will i will assume that the board is yes going to be looking at the work from this team they'll also be looking at the staff survey they'll also be looking at the community survey they'll also be looking at other pieces of information but again at almost every meeting we try to reiterate that the team is not making a decision and therefore that does not mean that azusa unified school district is going to do one of these two things not what it means it means that toward the

team they will be recommending to the board of education that we do one of these two things but it's a recommendation only and that the board of education still needs to consider the factors that it needs to and wants to um uh consider and so um again this was to build context i guess i could have just gotten to a spoiler alert and just you know came here and said this is where we're at these are the two things just wanted to build some some context around how the journey because we're in june we started in november this was a journey to get to this but this is where they're at right now and this is their current thinking uh right now we're gonna thank you thank you for that we have a few uh

board members that have questions let's start with board member greer you i i've i think it took it took some work but i think i i got to i got to a place of understanding um here at the end so thank you thanks for getting me there um something i would request that that i think would be helpful for would have been more helpful for me to see and might be helpful for for the community to see can we take i've seen this format where we have this if you can go to what is this slide 11 this one yes so i i've seen this format a number of times um and because of that i have grown to understand for the most part what this what this means can we translate can we find

a way to translate and communicate that there is work that has taken place by this committee and the committee has has narrowed it down to two models but can we more clearly write out what these mean and and with them side by side so for example i can gather that the the schools in yellow are being recommended that they be consolidated into other other schools but that's but that may not be clear if someone were to just look at this uh slide in and of of themselves so if there is a way to more in a more visually appealing way to clearly communicate a lot of work has happened but the net result of all of that work that has taken place is uh there are these two models that that are being evaluated and

that is that is what's before uh this committee that that would that would help me tremendously and having a place that i can go to uh to easily find that these two models are there um would would be helpful for me um if i were out and just kind of getting get tuning in at this point in the process you want to ask for clarification you did say visually correct like a key okay i guess to be to be extremely yes using using using something has something that's that i can look at a glance and and i can and i can gather the data as opposed to yes needing to read paragraph form that that's documented but somehow using words and and graphics visually to be able to compare the models yeah we will give

it a shot for sure yes so yeah i want to thank you and and your um and your committee for six months you guys work very hard and i really appreciate it and and i think that the number system you spoke about there was a reason behind it you know and you you explained that you want them to choose their own and it makes sense you know i mean you know what you were doing and i appreciate that so yeah it's it's good and thank you for the explanation and the work of your committee okay thank you um so my comment is not so my previous comment about the kind of decoding of the decimals and having headers and keys and summaries that um the average reader so not teachers not administrators not board members

but the average reader in the community um needs to be able to jump on look at a slide look at a one-pager and understand that these understand the ideas and communicating that very simply takes a lot of work and so i know that there's going to be a lot of work with you and your team to get that together especially in anticipation of the thursday night meetings because you're going to have the universe and you don't want to have 2 000 people thoroughly confused you want to have them informed and feeling engaged in the process um my only additional comment is something that i think points to some of the the culture in azusa unified um around communication and and i'm keying in on this because i heard you say it a few moments ago

about um you know that information is in prior meetings or it's in it's in an old slide deck i would like to encourage you and your entire leadership team to um continue to be more proactive in providing information that's really clear without kind of making the requester say well you can go find that somewhere in a deck or somewhere deep inside the website i think that is personally been a little frustrating for me and i think um in speaking with stakeholders that's a frustration that that has come up from time to time and so i would like us to move forward as a district with being um with having the expectation that the burden of finding information should not be on the person who's asking but that the the district as a as an organization

and as part of our district culture that we can push out information and make it as easy as possible and and as accessible as we can to our community so so so what i'm hearing from all the board is is just being able to have a more clear and concise communication especially for this meeting that is coming up on thursday um thursday june 24th uh instead of spending so much time it we could have the the paragraph the key to be able to just reference right away um you know having a larger audience uh them not be able to ask questions and we can cap you know captivate that um by this thursday would be appropriate in that that's what i'm hearing from from the majority of you if you have a yeah and i

would just i would piggyback off of board member actually and and what you said i i agree that [Music] there's there's even there's even a degree of both end in that it it does provide a level of transparency that you're right if somebody if somebody started today looking into this and they wanted to go back and watch every moment of every video and read every document it's i think it's a good thing that it's there i think i think it's a good thing that that exists and it's there for public consumption should should someone desire to to do that but if someone is not wanting to to go back and spend 40 hours worth of time to go to to read into all the documents and watch all of the videos there still being a

a way that is clear and and up front and very obvious for for a newbie entering the process i think is is valuable as well so so i i would i applaud the transparency that has allowed um a a a fly on the walls view of the process up to up to now but how how can we add to that and supplement it with a with a more user-friendly version as well so so perhaps uh maybe a a summary so but a living document to keep adding maybe yeah i'm send it here so in retrospect there's there's almost no point in saying this but but in retrospect as as we saw models whittling down if you i wonder if it would have been helpful to to more visually describe and lay out okay you know

there were these four models before and now there's the another these two models before and and finding a way to more clearly communicate i know that we have had this uh spreadsheet but you but you can get lost in the sea of cells with with with this one and and so in retrospect which isn't super helpful um i wonder what can we do now we have one more meeting coming up what could we do more and that's that's that kind of prompts the request that i thought i put up tomorrow at uh 10 30 a.m i believe i don't know the exact time but i know it's tomorrow um i do have a group of parents uh and staff a small group of parents and staff coming in uh to provide feedback uh for thursday's

meeting and to provide feedback on the on the um wording of the survey um so parents do sit on that as do staff and so hopefully they they will be able to provide we have drafts of stuff and that has been shared with them in anticipation of tomorrow and then i'll obviously take some of this information as well um just to be uber transparent there's a there's a balance between trying to build context um trying to be tmi um and then trying to be well he didn't tell us the whole story um and so it's a it's a balance of those things that we're trying to to strike and it's not um the easiest but i will we will definitely take this in information and um i will incorporate that into our meeting tomorrow or

recruit themselves again i just want to add something yes and and also on on the lingual you know how you work certain words you know your average person like if they're not pta mom or they don't even have kids in school community people can understand a lot more clearly would be appreciative also thank you team for providing the feedback to uh our superintendent and um thank you arthur and uh the reconfiguration team for meeting as much as you guys have and being able to provide what you um provided today and with the board's recommendations and suggestions um we can go ahead and move forward in a more uh transparent and more communicative approach and so i i'll go ahead and turn that over to you arthur and you could figure that out and how that

process will take place do we have any more questions before we move on to the next item okay thank you next we'll move on to item 9.5 approval of 2021 2022 board meeting calendar can i please get a motion to move 9.5 we have a first by board member greer second we have a second by board member rodriguez pena and we can go ahead and turn to i'm sorry do we have a discussion yeah i just have a question a purification on december 14th it has the asterisk and then the bottom says um indicates an alternative day is what is the purpose of that thank you yes so typically our board meetings are the first and third uh tuesday of each month and so if a date has an asterisk that means that it is

not a first or third tuesday and so that that just says hey fy this one doesn't fall in that pattern so then we may change the date to it's changed to like for instance i think this is the second um tuesday of the month should there be an asterisk on so why don't you put the second on here yes i should have yeah can we add that asterisk on there before it goes a thousand percent okay okay that's my only question thank you thank you any more questions or discussions at this time for item 9.5 seeing that there's none we did have one there was your motion second we did okay yes thank you thank you for that if we can go ahead and please uh place our votes and it passes 5-0 moving on
