001good evening everyone it is 5 30 happy new year hope you guys are excited as i am let's go yes all right so first let's uh take up care of housekeeping miss michelle are you our translator for today okay so if anyone needs translation mr michelle will be here and do they go to a different room or they just stay here miss michelle okay got it okay i can't hear you but i think they can hear you so we're okay all righty so today we are going to discuss the next model so we talked about our last meeting that we were just going to go crazy and just come up with another model we emailed that to you guys for your review as we have promised and so tonight we are going to present to

002you the 6th and 12th grade model now again remember we're focusing on the model um we're not going into discussion so the pros and cons we're looking at our six pieces the model the implementation programmatic drawbacks programmatic benefits support staff uh to be allocated to support this model and any budgetary impacts now with that we are going to go on any questions before i proceed i love it we are ready we know this by heart so our objective today is to explore the sixth through twelfth grade option so as we share before um our why primarily is behind capacity as well as programs we know in o203 we've only had 20 of our facilities available fast forward to this year we currently have 52 of our facilities available and that trend is projected to continue

003here is just giving us the same overview of each school site this is the same overview for looking at just our middle schools here's the same overview for our two high schools azusa high school and glaston high school so here we are our sixth through twelfth grade model this would include five traditional elementary tk five one tk eight and two six through twelfth grade schools the implementation piece two how would this happen so in a 22 through 20 i mean 21 through 22 school year for schools one through three there will be no new enrollment so for that school they would only have grades one through six when you go to 22 23 the same trend as the other models a grade will roll off so tkn2 which is a transition to a new school

004and grades three two through six will remain 23-24 grades three will transition to the new school grades four through six will continue and this trend will continue all the way through the 25 26 school year where the schools will have fifth grade will transition on and the sixth grade will remain given the option to promote from their home school now going into with the new schools how that would look so school four will continue enrollment and they will have seventh and eighth grade and that's the same for schools four through five i mean five through six when you go to school i mean fiscal year 23 7th grade will transition and you will only have grades eight since those three schools will be traditional middle schools based off of this for the 23 through 24

005school year on those schools could automatically be closed because there's only currently two grades at that school at this time now going to how it would look like for the new schools new school one through six for the 21-22 school year we'll have tk through six and that will continue all the way through when you go to new school seventh and eighth which will be the high schools they will have continued enrollment in the fiscal year 21-22 but when you go to 22-23 that will be the first year that they will have seventh grade on that campus so they will then have seven ninth through twelve and that will continue out all the way through 25 26 with the same philosophy of the other models the actual change will not take place until the 26

00627 school year and then that's when it'll be a tradition uh not a traditional actual six through twelve school mr tasha yes ma'am yes sir i'm sorry just a quick nuance in 2324 eighth grade would appear at the school sites i'm sorry yes yes that is a correction yes i apologize for that and so here is exactly what our tree would look like if this was the model we went with our t k through 12 would look like tk through eight we will have five tk through fifth grade schools we'll have one tk through eight and then for the secondary level we will have two six through 12 now schools will pass it on to dr mitchell hello everyone it's very nice to see you all this evening um so this looks familiar to you

007um this is taking a look at the different programs that would be available in this model and so you can see that we continue to have a preschool at all of our tk through 5 sites we would serve our students who have an iep all of our students we would have a range of different services for all of our schools for our visually impaired program we would have school one and then we would also continue on with our sixth grade at one of the schools that's the sixth through twelfth school programs beyond our core we would continue at all of our schools to offer elective opportunities visual and performing arts and stem all students have an opportunity to participate in parks and recreation opportunities through the city we would have after school sports in the

008tk8 and then the sixth through 12th grade schools think together would be available at all of our schools before school care in all of our tk 5 and tk8 we have peer mediation which is one of our district initiatives that would be at all of our sites and then we would have our year long i see that is there we go year-long electives would be at our 6th through 12th grade schools so another slide this one is talking about some potential programmatic drawbacks for this particular model one might be that younger students are on a high school canvas another potential programmatic drawback might be smaller a smaller sixth through 8th student cohort at the tk through 8 school in this model there are self-contained classes and there are not traditional electives and you have smaller

009staff teams a six through eight self-contained eighth grade uh would uh students would transition directly to high school and another potential programmatic drawback might be the coordination of sports and pe facilities and having high school and middle school students on the same campus some possible programmatic benefits in this particular model might be parent choice of traditional elementary and a tk8 school larger elementary schools might mean fewer combination classrooms in a tk8 school you have a you have fewer shifts for students meaning they don't transition from elementary to middle to high school so they would just have just two locations that they would attend increasing student population increases collaboration for programs at sites there might be an opportunity for an elective wheel at tk5 and tk8 for students or there could possibly be a magnet specialty

010focus like for example school of the arts our class sizes remain the same larger schools do create opportunities for larger parent groups and another potential programmatic benefit might be that all current career technical education pathways would still be viable so for example we have pitsco labs episco lab at one of our sites right now so we would install those at both of the 612 schools good evening team um happy new year for those of you who have hadn't i don't have haven't had the pleasure of seeing um this 2021 i want to first start off by recognizing a error that i made yesterday at the board of education meeting um i inadvertently misspoke regarding when when i described the support staff table so as i was describing it i accidentally stated that the sites would

011receive additional six hours of a community liaison or six hours of a library aid or 1.5 ft on top of what they're already receiving when sites reach 750. what i should have said is that all tk8 sites would have a baseline of a four hour community liaison position and a four hours of the library aid and eight hour of a clerk that would be the baseline and then once sites received 750 as we've been discussing here the sites will receive an additional hours to max out at six hours for community liaison and six hours for library assistant and uh capping out at 1.5 um of a fte for the clerk positions so um after the meeting i realized that i i misspoke um and as we should do is when we make mistakes we should

012quickly try to correct them so i apologize and um the correct information is what i was provided there i um on the slide before you describes what the um support staff changes would look like in the 21 22 school year as you can see on the support staff additions have been represented in green and the reductions in uh red um and as you can see there there is neither on on this slide so support staff would remain status quo um in this 21 22 year moving on to the following year the 22 uh 23 year my apologies uh you'll see that there are some changes um starting with the counselors um on the on the schools that would be phasing out uh the counselors would be um there's a total of three counselors at schools

013uh four five and six combined two of those counselors would be going to the um new school seven and eight which would be then um seventh through twelfth grade um so you'll start seeing an increase in counselors um would become the high schools and then the remaining one counselor would be um be responsible for the three remaining middle school sites that only has eighth grade and that's reflected in that percentage the um ap position uh at the school is four five and six on the currently they have a 0.5 um so right now they they're each of the schools um including or our tk8 side has um a 0.5 of a of a counselor of a assistant principal uh in up here you'll see that they'll be reduced uh by the um by that number

014and then the assistant principles would be going to the the high schools so from 7th to 12th grade and so the um the administrator left would be the principal covering just the one one grade at the eighth grade level if you go to the bottom as you start seeing the new schools and the uh what's represented in green um you'll see that the staying consistent with what we have been talking about with regards to social workers uh at the tk8 school we would increase by a half a half of fte of a social worker and then the 7th through 12th grade sites would have a full-time social worker as i stated earlier they'd have a full-time counselor coming from the middle schools and then an additional full-time assistant principal again as small but just a

015a small nuance just so we're calibrating if you can go back uh natasha just just so we're all on the same page right now the plan in this year the schools would not be seven through twelve schools it would be seven nine ten eleven twelve uh and this year next year there will be 7 12 just again just a small nuance but just to make sure that we're all on the same page this year they are not 7 12 and 22 23 they are only 7th and then 9 through 12. if i can also add the budgetary impact is a reflection of salary the salary calls for those positions being added to that school site thank you again i want to make sure we get this correct so i appreciate you jumping in uh the

016uh 23-24 school year uh we um and this is consistent with some of our models that we shared previously where you've seen a reduction in the number of support services in the way of the resource teacher um keep in mind in the schools that are being phased out on they um they will have fourth through sixth grade so they will be reduced by half of a resource teacher at these sites and similarly the these sites would also be would also experience a reduction of 1.5 hours of a health aide and library aid and as you can see for schools four five and six on this is when you the eighth graders would not no longer be at the middle schools and so the schools would in effect be be closed um going down to the

017new schools reflected in the bottom half of the table the green represents the additional hours for health assistance reflected um in green and then the reduction in hours for clerks and library assistants um corresponds to the reduction in hours actually to the table that we had been talking about and i started talking about earlier when i started when i started my remarks um with regards to the tk8 they will experience as well a 1.5 hours of an increase of a health assistant and a increase of one hour for the library assistant on as you can see here uh this the what i just described in the 23-24 school year would continue in the 24-25 year so there would be no change here and then in 25 26 excuse the small typo of the on the

018year banner you would see the the reduction of the um amounts of service that this sites will be receiving in the way of research teachers uh health assistants and library assistants you so before we go to next steps are there any questions on this model that pertains to our six pieces i do have one question about um when the six uh the possible 612 um idea or is it the intention for the district to departmentalize six through eight or they be self-contained as well when they're at the secondary right now right now the ideas we were talking about this model it would be as a middle school and and you bring up another good point um ms davidson this is a five-year model if we were to extend it to that sixth year that's when

019you see sixth grade appearing at the high schools that's why right now in this model you don't you don't quite see it yet uh because it's a five-year plan but in that sixth year is when you would see sixth grade appear at the at the high schools i have a question but i don't have a raise your hand thing can you hear me yes yes um can you explain um the decision making behind having it be 6 through 12 instead of 7 through 12 and then keeping sixth graders at the elementary can you talk to us about that piece of it please so a couple of things uh just a quick reminder uh these are just models right we're gonna get to latasha is gonna speak about these next steps in a quick second uh

020but right now if we keep the y in in mind in terms of maximizing um not only programs but facilities this helps maximize uh both of those things so having more students on a high school campus during declining enrollment that would maximize uh those facilities uh and having uh more students on that type of campus like six or 12 or we're thinking about programmatic offerings in terms of electives again having a larger group of students gives you more flexibility in the master schedule in terms of what it is that you're offering to have more moving pieces but again just want to revert back to the fact that this is a model when we get to those feedbacks that is definitely something that can be provided you know just something to ponder or think about you

021know would a 712 be better than a 612 but to answer the question those kind of were the driving factors or forces behind um this initial draft on 6-12 okay so then i'm going to re rephrase my question then so then by having it six through 12 then you are looking to maximize the capacity the existing capacity at both of the high schools so having the sixth graders there fulfills that by coming closer to having a hundred percent capacity yes ma'am okay thank you okay any other questions pertaining to the six pieces i think i have a question now um i i just want to know i'm thinking about this long phase out period in the elementary schools and i'm really wondering at the tail end when there's like maybe a school that has two

022or three classrooms with two or three teachers how that will really continue to function as an elementary school and provide kids with really a learning environment that's conducive to a rich experience because there won't be enough people to do a lot of activities there will be limited people should be involved in parents parent groups and in the staffing or support staff and um i are you going to be looking i guess what i'm really asking is are you going to be looking at maybe a shorter phase-in period with any of these models instead of taking the full five or six years so that kids can be in a a school that's well that has more kids in it so right now all of our models are over the five years um what gives opportunity for

023those that would choose to be able to promote from their home school so it could be that uh whenever a model determined and is implemented all the parents say you know what i don't want my kid just out of school when it's just only going to be them but right now this is how we're doing the model here now again that's just one of the implementations that we said was one of our pieces that could be a recommendation when we have our next meeting when we're going to discussions as to why people feel that's a pro or con okay any other questions this may be a nuance that we can talk about a little bit later but i do want it noted and i do i think that it might be a parent concern are

024we looking to maybe designate certain areas of a campus for younger students as opposed to the older students yes ma'am okay thank you all right okay so our next steps we will have our next meeting which i believe mr toro you received the invite already so on february 3rd and february 10th will be our in-depth meeting where we're going to receive feedback recommendations pros and cons but in the meantime we would like for you to speak to your counterparts your bargaining groups your parent groups to find out their ideas of the plans you guys have all four models so you can get their feedback and represent them as well when you come back on the third and the tenth um see their reactions share your reactions um recommendations maybe you just want to tweak a

025model maybe you have model 20 however it is this will be your opportunity to come back to us with your feedback as well as feedback from others and this will be your show we will moderate and we will have structure but this will be your show on february 3rd and february 10. so as we say before we're going to give you guys the time to give us your input and this is us honoring that and that will be on february 3rd and february 10th any questions regarding that i know it's fabulous so i know you don't have any questions because you're like oh my god she just gave us what we wanted another oprah moment i'ma write a book anything else you guys are amazing it is only 5 54. so the goal for next

026meeting is to receive the feedback from you all you're bringing back to us um receive the suggestions new revised model and participate in a consensus process if we get there but right now we're focused on here we want to hear you guys we want to hear and we're hoping that you truly use this opportunity to speak to others like hey i'm on this committee this is what they're talking about and you could be their voice because right now the only voice we're getting is from you all they have the opportunity to hear the meeting view the meeting but now this gives opportunity for you to represent them as well that's a lot of power you guys have so we're looking forward to seeing you guys on the third if there's no more questions i would

027like to thank you guys for tonight and i will leave it to boss if he wants to close us out if anybody else has anything real quick um natasha we do have um a comment in the chat from melissa wilson perkins at the next meeting can we have an idea about how the district will be handling busing from which school sites and for how many years it will continue busing i can take that note but i think we would get into that one once we dive down to settle down to which models we're dealing with then we're going to get into the nuance of that but busting is always on the table for us and that is not something that we're saying we're getting rid of as a process question latasha um so i'm reading

028what you're putting as our goals for the next meeting and let's hypothetically say it takes two meetings to achieve these goals so then one once um the group has decided on a consensus process then is a following meeting going to be about trying to choose which models will be recommended to the board is that the next step after that or is that part of this consensus model no the next two meetings is solely to get your feedback and then from there we're going to have to identify what is our next steps how many more meetings we need to schedule vice versa okay because we had asked some other questions in the very beginning that were not part of this particular process and we were told okay that's going to come later once the schools are

029determined that that will be closed for example or why or how and so those meetings are tbd right that's right okay yes ma'am thank you any other questions comments all right you guys are rock stars thank you again for your time your commitment and your service
