all the ppe uh that they do have for for our students and when they return in our staff they have quite a bit of ppe items which is like the mask gloves sanitizing sanitizers um plex the glass and then we went on to some school sites we went to a middle school elementary and a high school to see how how the desks are going to be separated you know by six feet away how on the floor they're going to have um the little stickers that have you know six feet apart you know if students are going one way and they're going to cross each other and the other side is not going to be succeed they'll have to go like all the way around i just kind of wanted to see um you know what

would happen or how's this going to look in the future so i just want to thank mr ortega to take taking his time and mr darren howard from ot and latasha for for taking me on that tour i also went to several back to school nights not been there of course online and it seems like the middle schools and the elementary or all the schools they become very creative in advertising their classrooms and their school in in the school and what they're showing you know what they're about in a different in a different manner and um i kind of like people have like mo emojis and they have like they're sitting at a school desk and i just think that everyone's doing a fantastic job on that and the most important thing that i do

like is that i'm not running around from school to school or looking for a parking so it's great just sitting here just clicking every every class on here so yeah it's good and i would like to close in memory of yolanda um and and also um she was one of our messengers and johnny garcia one of our groundsmen that passed away and recently passed away i'd like to close in memory of them thank you um i would also like to go ahead and congratulate marie sims from asusa on being recognized by a teacher of the year by leico um it's always great to to see our teachers be recognized for their exemplary uh you know uh and their passion that they have that that they uh that they portray and what they do for our

community um i other than that i have nothing else to report we'll go ahead and move to 7.0 comments and reports by superintendent cabinet student board members we'll go ahead and start with superintendent thank you uh like uh like some of you have noted um i ought to wanted to congratulate maria sims our teacher at azusa high school for not only being our district teacher of the year but now being recognized and named as one of lakel's top 10 teachers that is amazing we are extremely proud of maria uh the impact that she has on on her students uh on her colleagues and the community uh and what an honor for azusa unified school district to have one of its teachers as a as a top 10 being recognized in this manner i also would

like to thank um publicly miss yvonne morillo president of csea and csea itself for allowing me the opportunity to learn from one of their members and helping and helping me get an inside look into their work yesterday morning i was able to partner with monica pringle monica pringle is currently the secretary for the adult school and she has been doing that for 13 years monica oversees and and handles uh many day-to-day operations like emails uh assisting with phones workflows uh purchasing uh communicating with district departments and staff and then she also does um other things like uh we went outside and we hung up some banners and fixed some other ones and we folded pay warrants and stuffed envelopes and put them in boxes uh and all along i was able to have a conversation

with her uh right now they're working on some big projects uh they're moving enrollment at the adult school to an online platform um so a positive if you will of uh of the pandemic that we're currently in uh and she's working on on that um i'm really appreciative of monica to allow me uh to shadow her uh for lack of a better word to partner with her it just really was helpful to get some insight and her willingness to do this with me and spend that morning with me as i looked over her shoulder as she was working on stuff and just asked her a million questions she was very grateful with her time and so i appreciate that so so thank you thank you monica for allowing me that opportunity um i just want

to end my comments by sending my condolences uh to the families of yolanda boseniere larry woodruff and johnny garcia who all passed away recently and were members of our azusa team thank you do we have miss latasha jamal yes so first i would like to share the condolences as well as um share in the appreciation and gratitude for miss maria sims um i would like to use this opportunity to continue to thank our classified staff um district-wide as well as specifically in the business department um i want to shout out the maintenance and operation team all trades um especially um for the work they've been doing with the power washing and organizing the classrooms to get the six feet uh apart as well as we're trying to get our kerber pill up so i just

want to thank them for seeing the vision through and continue to work for that effort and i also want to shout out our nutrition services staff we've been having lines wrapped around i know we're getting complaints about traffic and we're trying to work on that but just to see um the poor of support that the the staffers jumped in to help our community and the fact that we're having lines it shows that there is a need and i'm just happy that um the district and our staff is able to meet the needs of our community thank you thank you we have mr jorge ronchio good evening board of education and um community members it's always an honor to be in front of you all um yes our hearts are heavy um as we express our

condolences for our recent losses very tragic i want to report to the board that i was able to attend back to school nights for our elementary schools and middle schools i've always wanted us to push ourselves to find some silver linings and one of the server linings and just covet is essentially the accessibility and being able to move from schools to schools so quickly and be able to see just the wonderful work that our teachers are doing um and be able to go through and just interact with teachers and watch teachers in iraq with our families um it was it was seeing full rooms what i would have imagined been a whole auditorium full of families but it was virtually just being able to access our schools and so i want to thank our our

administrators our our teachers and our classified employees that made this possible i also want to um echo in the um celebration of maria sims um truly an amazing honor to have a laco top uh teacher that is that is truly a special um honor and a testament to the hard work that uh maria does but also what our all our teachers are doing so thank you maria um and then i want to close with a um a shout out to our csca employees as well um i appreciate all the work that our csca employees are doing day in and day out at our schools and our offices so a big shout out to all of you thank you great thank you and we have uh dr dana mitchell good evening i also wish to express

my condolences as well for the loss of our staff members as you um all know we do have a college and career readiness program that we partner with azusa pacific university and i wanted to report that last week we were able to uh kick off our champ program which stands for college headed and mighty proud for our fourth graders in our district and we are beginning with murray valley dale paramount and magnolia and this year it is all virtual and uh the mentors meet with the fourth graders and they're able to um put their assignments uh into uh the teachers google classrooms the teachers put those assignments in there for the kids and uh they're able to uh to work on that with their mentors and the the first assignment was um just all about

getting to know one another they meet every tuesday and they have about uh 25 minute sessions to learn about college and explore college majors they are still going to they're planning to have a virtual um visit data apu which will be in november and also they're also planning to have a virtual champ graduation so we're excited to report about that thank you thank you and do we have student board member destiny contreras from gladstone high school to report hello um students at ghs are getting ready for club rush on october 12th asb is doing a great job publicizing the clubs via instagram this week gladiators chose four students to represent them on the school site council there is one freshman one sophomore one junior and one senior to help the principal make decisions that will

impact the school this year there is representation from our health academy rotc volleyball and the badminton team we are identifying as well a group of 12 diverse gladiators to participate in a student advisory council for the district to give feedback on how we can make our schools better in the district we would like to highlight the work of miss parmar who is doing a really good job with hands-on learning in distance learning and we really appreciate the work that mr enfante is doing running asb thank you thank you destiny and the next student that we have is from asusa unified i'm sorry asusa high school and it's jacob vasquez hello everyone my name is i'm the student board representative for azusa high school so first off azusa high school has just completed their wasp visitation

writing strategies and the use of engaging technology strategies thank you thank you jacob and we have the sierra high school representative alex arkenberg yeah hi good evening board members cabinet and superintendent ortega sarah just finished her grading periods and students grades have been posted for parents to view in the parent portal teachers have been meeting with parents to discuss grades last week and will continue this week our re-engagement committee has been working hard to support students with staying connected and attending classes miss sainz community liaison and mr lopez campus aid along with the help of officer conwell from azusa pd have been made have been making home visits on fridays to check in and support students in the coming weeks the team will be delivering hygiene kits which have been donated by the assistance league

of covina the team's goal is to continue to make connections throughout the school year and that's all i have thank you thank you alex we can go ahead and we're going to go ahead and move to 8.0 report action of closed session matters at this time we have nothing to report we'll go ahead and move down to 9.0 general functions and 9.1 cobit 19 update dr dana mitchell good evening um i have three updates uh this evening the first one is that um think together yesterday think together opened up uh neighborhood learning hubs for our k-12 students uh they there are seven sites dalton valley dale lee foothill center azusa high and gladstone high school and each site has the capacity for four classrooms of 12 students each for a total capacity of about 336

students they are open from 7 30 to 2 30. and we had a chance to uh visit the sites on friday as they were getting the finishing touches ready and going through and and talking about their protocol and then we had a chance to um to visit the site yesterday and um walk the classrooms and uh the sites and and see the students and so that was that was great so uh students are uh enrolled uh families enroll them online and they're prioritized by individual need we have our nutrition services team that's delivering the student meals to the sites and they are think together is following a protocol for in-person programming that does align with the los angeles county department of public health also the county department of public health has issued a reopening protocol

for youth sports and this is an opportunity for students to participate after school in training conditioning and skill building activities it's not sports uh in the same manner as prior to covet 19. there you can do skill building conditioning and training but not games or competitions that's not permitted at this time the skill building and conditioning does need to take place outside the protocol does stipulate measures to ensure safety of the students and the coaches and we have been meeting with the high school principals and the athletic directors to review the requirements of the protocol as we prepare and then the last update is that as we continually look to improve uh the way that we serve our students and our families we recognize that we are looking at how we use data to address

our continuous cycle of improvement and so we have uh looked at different opportunities for surveys and data collection and we have met with an organization called youth truth and this is a national nonprofit organization that offers a survey instrument that is validated and it does capture students staff and parent perceptions and it helps schools to determine strengths and areas for improvement in lots of different areas such as student engagement academic challenge relationships belonging culture mental health college and career readiness and in addition to these topics the survey data does include topics on diversity equity and inclusion and all of these things do support our focus in addressing systemic racism and so they do there are other services that they offer as well and so in conversations with them and other school districts that have uh

used their services they also offer workshops and advisory services for staff as well as for students as a means to examine evaluate and respond to data and so um just want to give you an update on that that we have been looking into that and then we look forward to investigating more on that and and bringing you information on this organization thank you thank you we have a question from board member rodriguez pena yes i just like a clarification regarding the sports can you give me an example of the training and skill building what exactly this sure what does that look like sure so um so uh when uh athletes are preparing they can do exercises um they can do training um so maybe they are um they're doing jumping jacks or they are doing

push-ups or tennis that's another example they can play tennis because that's not something um that's more of an individual um activity so they just can't participate in um in a game situation so in terms of when they're preparing and training for a sport so exercise is is pretty much what that means and they would have to be um physically distance i think it's somewhere six to eight feet apart while they're participating in uh in exercise to train uh for their sports and and what is the um capacity how many students can um be in this and sports is it and it's also after school correct yes it is after school um and i will um i i'll look at the protocol to see and provide that information for you um i'm off hand i don't

i can't recall exactly what the capacity is i'm not sure thank you you're welcome all right and for the business team i'm happy to announce as we shared before that we have incorporated an additional serving day on wednesday so we are happy that we can offer another serving option for parents and students to receive five meals we also received a green light to reserve meals for weekends and holidays so that means during our serving time our um parents and families are receiving seven meals um when they pick up so it's i mean it touch your heart when you realize for some people this is their only meal and now instead of just saying oh my god what are they doing during the weekend we're able to meet that need and we also can meet the

need for the holidays as well um also as i shared before we're still working on our classroom setups i'm happy that we were able to collaborate and work successfully to get everything set up for thing together because that's meeting the needs of our family as well and we have recently looked into ordering additional um senator sanitization systems like the system where you can literally spray a room and in 30 seconds is disinfected and everything dries we don't have to move things around so we're trying to find ways that we can clean um more quickly and efficiently at the same time thank you okay do we have i see one hand raised uh board member rodriguez pena you're muted i'm sorry i i didn't put my hand down i'll do that now thank you okay just

making sure i i actually had a question um about the meals since now uh one of them there's an uh an additional uh day so before the parent you know the parents were coming and receiving um the meals for the meals in one day so are they able to come for the two days or do they just come once a week each family can come to any serving time that we have they're taking no scantron we're literally speaking the needs of our community if a family needs a meal they come through our grab and go model and we provide them a meal okay so just just to be clear before they could only come either in the morning or in the afternoon they couldn't come at two times so what you're what you're sharing now

is that if they need a meal they will not be denied exactly okay thank you for the clarification thank you well i'm sorry was there another question no okay good um so i will move on uh with uh my cobin 19 uh update um we are in los angeles county and currently under the los angeles department of public health um right now no schools in the county are allowed to open um that has not changed that stance has not changed but there are four exceptions to that ruling or to that order uh which makes things a little bit uh confusing maybe uh so i just want to kind of talk a little bit about those four exceptions um so that we can kind of walk through those so exception number one even though schools are

closed and even though you are not allowed to open if you are a particip if you are a recipient of an asus or 21st century grant applic uh program you are allowed to bring that program back you heard dr mitchell talk about being together in azusa unified school district that is our program in this exception number one so as dr mitchell said uh students are back on campus uh limited capacity uh following protocols uh and we were able to see that uh in action uh and so it was nice to see uh students back that program is not currently at full capacity uh so dr mitchell and their team and think together and their team are working on a a process of reaching out and uh inviting uh students to be in that so that's

exception number one um so again if you're if we're driving down the street and we look into our campus and we see kids it's not that we're open is that we have this exception number one you also heard dr mitchell speak about exception number two uh and that is around sports and uh that excludes games uh no competition uh between schools no competition between even groups this is about skill building and uh conditioning so that is exception number two and as you heard dr mitchell we are working um with staff to ensure that there is a pathway for us uh to be able to bring and offer that opportunity to our students exception number three uh which is probably the the um the most confusing of all is an exception for students with ieps and

or english language learners for specialized services that one uh does come with a cap uh each school site is not allowed to bring more than 10 percent of the school site population uh so if we have a school of 300 students for this exception number three does not count towards one or two just number three so sports doesn't count think together doesn't count um 10 that means 30 students 30 students that have an iep uh and or our english language learners uh can be allowed to bring uh be brought back for specialized um so with that um as well uh we are working uh diligently uh through that process uh to get us to a point to be able to offer uh that uh uh to our that support uh to our students uh as

well and then a new exception uh has just been made uh available and that is a waiver to bring back tk through second grade students um this one is not fully fleshed out uh yet we did participate in a phone call uh today and the only thing we know right now uh is that they are saying that they will it's an it's an application it's a waiver that you submit and they are saying that they are going to be approving 30 schools per week not 30 districts but 30 schools they also say and have been saying that those 30 schools are going to be evenly distributed that's the that's the term that they are using uh amongst the supervisoral uh districts so meaning um that if if we take them literally that means that it

would be six schools per district uh not school district a supervisor uh district um they are also saying that there is going to be a kind of a rank on these schools so it's not like first come first serve but rather looking at um the the demographics and the need of those particular school sites that they would be approving these waivers for so not much has been released on this this fourth exception uh we continue to have meetings with them on a weekly basis uh but that is that is what we know um that is what we know right now uh board member audience you had a question yes um i just wanted clarification when when you mean um six supervisor districts so does that mean um what does that look like is it just

is it uh uh you know la county uh valley county san bernardino county or can you please explain that to us yes uh no this is just for los angeles county and so this is for uh our supervisors so our our main supervisor uh in our district would be hilda solis um although i believe it's um gladstone high school and maybe arlington might be in supervisor barger's um uh district um so so it's though it's it's the board of supervisors or the board of supervisors got it correct for la county all right yes board member chris gonzalez yeah i'm just a little confused by you saying that there's no information about waivers when i mean the state released the pro the waiver application and process i mean i understand we have local county there's going

to be county guidelines but i mean the waiver's been out for a very long time other other counties have been opening up using waivers for quite a while now so that that statement confuses me a little bit um but i think knowing that we can now apply for waivers starting on october 1st and knowing that our schools would probably be very high priority because of our our student makeup i'm just i just want to know where we are in terms of looking looking at all those pieces so one like what's the timeline for us to be able to bring back english learners and special ed students for for for specialized services what is that timeline what is the timeline are we looking at for the to be able to bring students back for sports and

then finally what is the timeline for us to um to to be able to submit a waiver to bring some students back for for instruction thank you um yeah let me clarify uh for sure the waiver the waiver program was made available by governor newsom several weeks maybe even a month ago but when it originally when that was originally made available la county department of public health came out and said we will be issuing no waivers we are not participating in the waiver program they since have amended that stance and are now us now are saying that they will take waivers for tk2 they have said that that will be available early october um and we will definitely double check again but as of yesterday that we that waiver was still not available uh in

the county uh all they kept saying was early early october um we do have a meeting um on thursday uh so hopefully we uh get more information uh about that at that particular uh time so i guess i guess my i guess my confusion arturo is that um i i understand that there may not be like an ali specific application but we do know that the for example i'll just use labels for an example but you could use the same same scenario for opening for hybrid instruction we do know that it's coming down the line in our district we knew that at some point we'll be able to open get get waivers and open up for elementary schools we know that at some point i know like districts like long beach are are are saying

that they think they're going to come back to hybrid instruction in january so that's gonna happen so i mean my my i guess my not understanding is we know that these opportunities are are coming down the pike right so what are we doing in terms of planning so that once for example the waiver is now available we're in a position to be able to to apply and be able to take opportunities and be able to bring kids back i really appreciate that that adrian a couple weeks ago said we really need to think about these youngest kids right you know that that really zoom is not the right way for them to be in for them for instruction and so what i'm saying is i i would hope that we as a district would be

future mapping and future planning so that when these opportunities came up become available we can jump on them um as opposed to saying we're going to wait until an application comes out from l.a county and then we're going to start planning and discussing right i think to me that's not a proactive approach got it no thank you for that clarity on that on that question um yeah so in terms of uh the planning um we started off uh looking at the guidelines uh protocols from los angeles county department of public health um and we have started to work on those you heard uh from latasha jabal today in terms of the physical aspect the nutrition the ppe um and so we're working through those originally um we were meeting every other week we have wrapped

that up to weekly internally we are meeting more often than that to get through to get through those uh to ensure that every t uh is crossed and every eye is dotted we have uh enlisted uh the feedback from laco they have been very gracious and have been very um quick on responding to us uh in terms of any questions or any clarifications that we have in terms of that protocol and so we are working quickly to that uh to get to a point for the sports for the students with ieps and english learners and definitely for the waiver but in terms of a a timeline right now um i don't we don't have a specific uh timeline uh but we're looking to be able to do that as quickly as possible so not even

special ed and english learners correct how do you intend to assess your english learners by the end of this end of october then we don't have a timeline for bringing them back for for assessment we definitely have we definitely have the intent to to do that i just don't have a like a specific date to be able to say by this date but that is our intent for sure but i i guess what i'm not even hearing is like we think it's a week away we think it's about a month away we think it's about two months away i'm like i'm not even i'm not even hearing that part we definitely we definitely think that it's this month or describing the challenge with putting with with attaching a uh a harder timeline to that i

wonder is it possible to um what would it look like to provide some sort of progress report where if we're if we were able to see that these are the benchmarks that are that are needing to be met and this is where we are with each of those benchmarks with with um like expected timelines on those benchmarks i don't know how extensive that that would be but to have something like that helps us to see um if we even if we were able to get that um you know over the course of the next couple weeks to see where things are progressing and where things are are not progressing so that we so that there is uh even if we can't attach a date now we can at least monitor the progression is that something

that is feasible so i i just adrian i just feel very differently i feel like we as a board at this point need to set out some dates and saying we expect by next friday to have a timeline and i mean i would even say like so i'll just give you the example right so all of our english learners that have entered our district for the first time this year newcomers um young students are supposed to be assessed for their language assessment they gave us 45 day window extension so normally 30 days so they have to be tested in the first 75 days that that is that and the end the little ones have to come into school so that has to happen before the end of october right and so i i'm just i'm

just not sure how we can comply with with with with this requirement if we're not going to be able if we're saying at that point we're not going to have anybody coming in person can i suggest that maybe those two that what i'm saying and what you're saying shielding are not necessarily mutually exclusive in that yes let's set it so if there already is a deadline that's set that is asking for the end of october for these assessments to take place can we set that target and uh can we also because there are other subgroups as you described like the four categories of exceptions or and waivers can we also see where we are and get updates on on uh progress that's needing to be made as well as progress that has so far that

has been made with those other areas so so i think i guess what i'm suggesting is that we do both end as opposed to one or the other i mean i think that's fine i just i want to see an implementation plan with dates associated with which i understand can be i mean can be changed right it doesn't have to i mean obviously things happen but i think i mean i think i appreciate that there's that that the committee's been meeting now for several months and i think at some point we have to make some decisions so that we're able to take advantage of the opportunities um because our neighboring districts are starting to do it right they're starting to do that um and i i does our students deserve the same opportunities perfect have

the last uh report out so the hr office continues to work with the site and district administrators along with bargaining unit leaders in response to kova 19 matters this work is taking place at the bargain union table work with individual employees and we continue to refine our processes as it applies to screening and reporting that information so that it's accessible it's easy and accessible for employees i actually have a question um hurry ron keyo you're saying that you're implementing this with the administration um and so but what does that look like so um for processes involving the administration so every day we do have an expectation and it's written in tour and we use that employees that are going to be coming onto school sites that they do a health screening to see if they

have any symptoms related to kovid and also to report whether they had any contact with somebody who has symptoms is a confirmed positive um and so if they report in the affirmative to any of those questions then the employee is directed to state to stay at home that information is funneled through the administrators and then that information is sent to hr so that's happening on multiple levels at the site level and then at the district level uh each of the directors are asking their direct reports to do a similar uh process and then all the way up to the superintendent um i submit mine every morning um to to mr ortega as part of my screening so we're all reporting out in this similar fashion uh but what we also are doing is we're listening

to our employees that as they're expressing um just either questions or concerns regarding this process we're continuing to refine our processes thank you i have another question with special education um 20 needs to be tested over every 30 days what does that look like are we meeting are we accomplishing that are we out of compliance yes we're as a that was part of what we were talking about in the earlier section with regards to the testing of students and so we are aware of this mandate and this mandate is something that we're working to begin the implementation of of our testing we one of the components to to starting this process is the uh process of making sure that we are negotiating with our bargaining unit unit leaders any area that will affect working conditions

uh particularly safety um so so we're at the bargaining table uh with our with our employees to ensure that we are addressing those particular concerns um and moving forward in that direction can can we before we just in case we're we're going to be moving on uh now after this can we circle back around to i know when we were talking to you and i was i was sharing a potential pathway forward and sheila nima was sharing a potential pathway forward can can we maybe land and have more clarity on on what what to expect moving moving forward yeah we can definitely submit a what i heard you say a progress report so we can submit a a draft as early as this week and then just keep updating that on a continual basis and

as far as um you know so as far so so that's one piece and that helps us to see progress and i know you said it's difficult to attach timelines but uh back to sheila neen's point where they're you know where there are deadlines that that we have to to assess otherwise we would be out of compliance um when you said you believed this this week or are we saying that we where where are we there what what can we speak to as far as time and remaining complaints in regards to assessments correct again i think that it's hard to put a uh a date uh on it and there's a lot of moving parts um for instance um the waiver program um it's not just a it's not just an application right there's a

lot of pieces that come together that will have to come together with that with that uh waiver part of that are letters from parent groups in support letters from bargaining members and so we we are making headway we are definitely we we feel just like you feel uh the necessity to uh to to move uh to get this done uh to get our students uh back on campus not just for the assessments uh but the other things that we've talked about today uh the the conditioning uh the the skill building uh the specialized services uh the tk2 um and so um i think that what i what i interpreted was not just a progress report but like a like a timeline that that had all of these moving parts so uh alpac uh twenty percent

um uh a ma of every 30 days and so kind of give you a visual and kind of let you know where we are on those on those particular pieces and again like you know here we are here knowing that right here we're about to hit a major milestone um and kind of provide that kind of a big picture with with not just our progress but the timelines as well just so just to clarify when you say um when you say that the waiver process requires letters from um you said labor partners requires letters from uh community parents are you saying that that is the same case for specifically assessments first for special ed and ela no so so i guess my um i i it sounds to me like we you know let's let's

let's begin that work and that would be helpful to have the uh the progress report and the timeline and all that for for some of those other waivers but i guess what i'm asking since since there's a closer deadline for the ela and special ed assessments can we can you know what does it look like to it to it to attach a timeline so as to remain in compliance with that specific area alone as an initial step yep so what i'm hearing is instead of like a like an overcompensating what we can do is break it out maybe on the three on the three uh different ones so do that for assessment do that for sports and then do that for waiver and i would i mean i would add the hybrid and start the

hybrid piece too right because if that's not if that's not part of our current agreements that has to be that that's going to have to be um negotiate or dealt with it at some point right but the only thing that i'm wanting to separate out is the fact that for the the fact that for our um hybrid instruction though you know there there there are not assessment deadlines attached to remaining compliance for i'm just saying if we're going to talk about four but the buckets let's i'm not saying that we need to have it i'm saying that's probably the that's obviously that's the last priority but i'm just saying let's include that one too not just the other three yeah we have a hand up um board member rodriguez pena yes my question was regarding

the students especially and ald students are they still being assessed and having ieps on regular basis so we can um during the covert 19 so we can still monitor their progress or if they need extra assistance or are they still um doing that i believe erin is in the um room is aaron here cause she speak to the special education population yeah i believe these students um of special needs and and elds that you know they should be monitored and not be forgotten um during these pandemics i think it's even harder um for them having to work from home so i really think we need to um be sure that they are tested and assessed continuously because i know i know the ieps have to be then 30 days or if you know um a

certain a certain amount of time right so is it being done do we have aaron cramer i am here can you hear me now we could hear you okay good i wasn't sure sorry about that good evening everybody um so um i'll answer a couple of the questions that have been put out to start um ms rodriguez pena yes our um special ed staff and teams have been doing a really good job at providing services for students virtually anything from occupational therapy to their specialized academic instruction we have held our annual ieps within our regular timelines virtually with families and teachers and principals and staff members to support progress monitoring so when we look at progress on goals we have been holding our ieps to support our students and ensure that they're accessing appropriately and

that we are doing what we can to the best of our ability in this circumstance to ensure that they're accessing their their program assessment has been very challenging we have not been able to provide regular assessment as we typically would um since we closed in march as mr ronkeyo and mr ortega shared we have been working very hard with cabinet with our bargaining units with teachers and staff members to identify how we can safely start assessment processes when we are ready we have all of our records and we are ready to identify a process to make sure that we're hitting that 20 percent mark and um assessing students as efficiently and appropriately as possible moving forward thank you aaron of course thank you here we have um anyone else that has questions or concerns and

do we have any more um information about copen19 update nope okay we'll go ahead and move to 9.2 red ribbon week resolution number 20-21 15. dr dana mitchell yes we are bringing forward this resolution this is californians for drug free youth which is a statewide parent community organization they partner with the california department of alcohol and drug programs and they co-sponsor red ribbon week their theme this year for 2020 is be happy be brave be drug free and we will be providing schools with various options for virtual red ribbon week activities as well as partnering with the elks they have three different contests that they sponsor and so we are going to provide that opportunity for our students there is a drug awareness poster contest for uh for students there is an essay contest and

there's even a video contest as well so we're looking forward to providing that for our students thank you great thank you okay i'm going to go ahead and open up for a motion for 12.1 most i move to a proof i'm sorry 12.2 or so sorry nine point two two like you're right thank you yes thank you i moved and moved to uh to open debt for a motion for nine point two i move to approve 9.2 a second thank you um student vote i'm sorry we're not there yet bear with me uh now it's open for discussion does anyone have any questions or concerns about this as we see none we're going to go ahead and turn it over to student vote parkenberg thank you and our board we can go ahead and vote

electronically okay it passes 5-0 moving on with the agenda we have 9.3 resolution number 20-21-16 of the isuzu unified school district endorsing measure y the citrus college career education repair and affordable higher education measure move to approve item 9.3 can i get a second i'll second open for discussion i actually have um a question this um so this measure is this the measure that's going to be on the november third ballot yes and do we know how how this measure will be affecting our constituents such as how many you know hundred thousands per do we have that information i don't have that information uh at hand i do because i've been i had evidence in the mail the mailer said twenty five dollars per hundred thousand dollars assessed value okay i'm sorry so for example

our bond is are you you cannot hear me can anyone else can anyone else hear me i can hear you guys hear me lag in the middle so 25 20 25 25 per hundred thousand dollars assessed value for contrast our bond are usually our bond our last bond was sixty dollars per hundred thousand dollars assessed value okay thank you thank you for that any more questions or discussion okay that brings us to our end of discussion and that lead us to to vote um can we get the student vote please approve thank you okay go ahead and vote online okay it passes 5-0 we're going to go ahead and move down to 9.4 discussion of november 3rd 2020 board meeting date mr ortega yes right now we currently have a board meeting scheduled uh regular

board meeting scheduled for november 3rd 2020 that happens to be um the election uh day election night and so the conversation was uh do we keep our board meeting uh here on this tuesday uh or do we move it uh to wednesday on november 4th or or something else but just wanted uh direction around this particular board meeting and the date do we have any recommendations there's discussion anybody would like to go ahead and speak about this i have an opinion so i'm just i mean so i mean i would say governor and adrian i mean that's what we did at the um the last election that we ran we ran in um i'm pretty sure wasn't it and i think um uh yeah that's right that's right yeah yes and i think um in

retrospect i think it's it was better it's better just to have the meeting on election night and and i i don't know i think we tried something i'm not sure that it really worked i don't know if anybody else wants to weigh in can you define work when you say it didn't work i mean it just i mean because i mean obviously um one of the incumbents lost and then it like we had a meeting the next day and it just felt it just felt really awkward and weird and if we have the meeting on the same night you know it's it just feels a lot cleaner to me i don't know that's that's my personal opinion if i'm hearing you correctly you're saying to um to continue and having uh to have our meeting

on a tuesday november 3rd yeah on the on election night i'm saying keep it under i i'm recommending we keep it on november 3rd okay we have a board member rodriguez pena oh no i'm just gonna say i do recall we changed it the next day but then again um as shironine mentioned i do i do recall the awkwardness the next day also when that came i actually forgot about that and then i would just i mean i guess that part doesn't shouldn't really matter right i mean we're all this is public service so that really shouldn't matter but i mean it also just felt kind of exhausting because there's an election and then we had a board meeting the next night right and it was pretty it was pretty tiring as opposed to like

i mean if you didn't that was just a lot of mental energy that goes into an election for those of you that are running and then and then have a meeting the very next day um i i guess go ahead we have a hand raised i'm so sorry um we have a board member bibles vogel um i i just basically would think that yolanda is running and if she's up to it to do it that night and she feels comfortable because that's what i was i would i would think is people who are running may be distracted or whatever but if she feels fine then well i mean since you mentioned it you know i feel that i prefer to have it the next day myself because everyone throughout a race and everyone knows how

it is that day so to concentrate and sit in the rain and it's long and it's kind of edgy um as a candidate yes i i appreciate it so we have a board member career yeah i i um this thank you shilling for for giving context and how things was uh how things were previously um yeah i think you know awkwardness is a potential i think we i don't know i suppose we just have to deal with that i think it might make sense you know without without having experienced it myself it might make sense to not have it the night of just because of everything that's happening um i would uh say though just for me personally wednesdays are are not good nights for me i have a i have a standing commitment on

wednesdays so what does it look like to do it on on thursday on the so on the uh two days later and i'm sorry can i just add to that though so yes exactly the next day the person doesn't win you know it's awkward but the person still needs to come to other meetings until december so it's not like it's just one day you don't come you're still going to continue you're not done like that night you're not done so it's it's either way it doesn't matter what i'm hearing is um that uh no matter what what uh the result and result is for the elections that the board member needs to come until um the end of november and um therefore but and i'm also hearing from board member rodriguez pena that it would

be beneficial not to have it on november 3rd um to have it on another day just because of the extent of and the work um and what i'm hearing from board member adrian greer is that uh november 4th which is the next day is he has prior commitment if we are able to go ahead and agree on thursday november 5th so i compiled all that i do have to say i also agree with that um actually let's go ahead and open up for a motion on motion to move the meeting to thursday november it's november 5th right all right thursday november 5th i second that motion okay and do we have any more discussion as we see none let's go ahead and turn to this uh mr arkenberg student preferential vote i agree thank you

let's go ahead and vote i have to say mr arkenberg i get a kick out of your votes thanks you're welcome passes 4-1 moving forward now we're moving into 10.0 consent calendar all matters under the consent calendar are considered by the board to be retained and will be enacted by the board in one motion in the format following in the last consent calendar agenda item there will be no discussion of these items prior to the time the board staff or the public request specific items to be discussed if discussion is requested by any board member that item will be removed from consent calendar and it will be considered an item separately the superintendent and staff recommend approval of all consent calendar agenda items board can i please get a motion i make a motion to

approve item um 10.1 or excuse me 10.2 through 10.8 second okay it's open for discussion okay do i see hands raised i just want to make sure that i don't miss anybody nope okay since we have the first and the second motion from items 10.1 to 10.8 let's go ahead and vote but before we do mr arkenberg student preferential vote i approve [Music] we're waiting for one did all of us get a chance to vote okay and it passes 5-0 since no items were pulled from consent calendar we'll go ahead and move to 12.0 curriculum and instruction 12.1 public hearing for sufficient textbook this is a public hearing the hearing is now opened and i will go ahead and open it for public comment board member ariana can you give instruction as to how to

let me go ahead and back up a little thank you board member career point of order let's go ahead and before we vote let's go ahead and have this uh mr arkenberg student preferential vote i approve thank you see it passes 5-0 let's go ahead and continue with 12.2 approval of sufficient textbooks resolution number 20-2117 now can i please get a motion for 12.2 so moved okay thank you can i please get a student mr arkenberger's student preferential vote yes thank you i see that it passes 5-0 moving on with our agenda we have a 13 13.0 business and finance we have 13.1 approved change of order number 001 ausd field upgrades at asusa high school miss latasha jamal i'm so sorry the changer let me go ahead and back up for a little bit

um can i please get a motion to approve 13.1 a motion can i get a second second open for discussion um yes i have a question regarding this change order um that they want us to extend it to november the first my question is um i like to know how far back are they with gladstone high school they're still they're still in the dirt and cement you know i'm just curious to see how if natasha may have a timeline or something because they seem to be maybe a month behind uh it hasn't been brought to us but um from what i recall we were doing the fields and we were hoping the fields would be done not exactly the same day but you know close to each other and one looks like way far behind

now this one's already a month behind so so i like to see a timeline a timeline in our packet um with some concrete timelines on these and it doesn't always fall exactly but they're like far behind yes and um and this week's um board update package you will have an update of the latest projections from the committee thank you now another question so is this is this a ratification since that it was supposed to end in september um i don't think it would be a ratification because they're not they're just extending the terms of a contract so it's just times of because i don't i would have to look to see if the actual completion date was part of the contract but this is just them stating they need more time to finish it okay

right thanks i have one question will will this uh will this also increase um the amount of the contract or it's no this is not there's no cost change okay this is just purely time great thank you you're welcome any more comments questions seeing that there's none and it's end of discussion i turn over to our student mark arkenberg for his student preferential vote 13.1 yeah it's alex alex got it okay we move over for the boat process 5-0 moving on to 13.2 reject all bids for relocation of portable buildings to gladstone street elementary can i please get a motion 13.2 to reject all bids second second thank you open for discussion questions clarification on that please so we went out to bid um we received um qualified bidders um the bid packet that was

awarded um that award e reached out to the bond committee um consulting committee to state that they had a miscalculation in their submission and asked that their bid be pulled you know that bid was higher or lower um the bid would actually be higher their calculation made them underbid the total cost of the project i have a question so why does it say gladstone street elementary can you please click clarify that yes that's tied to how the um locate the school is actually registered with a dsa any more questions or concerns i see that there's none we'll go ahead and move to student preferential vote alex i disapprove thank you thank you for your vote board okay can i ask why alex did you say that that bid was more money was higher um no
