again I log down oh thank you okay motion passes 5-0 moving on we have recognition and awards we have item 5.1 recognition of vulcan materials so we wanted to honor vulcan tonight for their contributions to the district and their continual support to the district during the heating paramount underground utility project they really helped us out in removing and I don't know how many loads of truck it was 50 loads of rocks at no charge to us or to the contractor so thank you so much for your continued commitment to Azusa Unified and we look forward to your partnership in the future thank you so we have here is this Unified School District sort of certificate of recognition is proudly presented to Vulcan Materials for their generous assistance in the modernization work for Paramount Elementary School
in August 20th [Applause] thank you very much moving on we'll have items from the floor public comment through every couple comic arts we have one card from Omar Hernandez on consolidated ready mix request - no this is good you'll have three minutes good evening Madam President members of the board I'm here on behalf of Masad ready-mix I'm here to ask you just three questions because we don't know we looked in your minutes and we wanted to know first when did when did a Susan Unified School District take a book or an action as it pertains to consolidated ready mix that's the first question second when did the vote when did the board vote to make Mountainview a site or preschool in the near future and last is who authorized the distribution of flyers to parents
and students in that area so the reason why I'm asking is because you had a member of your team mr. mark Bomarito who asserted that the assumes a Unified School District had to was in fact not in support of this project so that's why we looked on in your minutes and we couldn't find any of your minutes where that was asserted also we also had another board member who also went on there and asserted that as well the environmental impact report just came out and I would invite all of you to please take a look at it we have we have done everything we possibly can and I'm not here to go and discuss the matter as it pertains to the merits of the of the actual report but I am here to just ask
those simple questions so that I can go back and look at the meds I appreciate that and we'll have our superintendent you left your contact information here yeah yeah it's here maybe if you can add your email to it looking that we can have them follow up with you thank you okay great and as you know we don't respond to public comment but we've heard your questions so we will move on to the next there are no other public comments we'll move on to the next item and that is comments and requests by the board and so we'll start with Adrienne yeah just simply put school starts in a couple days I know my daughter's is starting over at Lee and there's there's kids starting all across the district know that I've already seen cars
on all the campuses as I'm driving by seeing teachers and staff that are there so thank you for the hard work that's already going into things and just just you know looking forward to a great year this year thank you yes hi I just want to thank everyone for these who's a beautiful oh we had a cleanup downtown from the Gold Line all the way to downtown Azusa and I want to thank all the volunteers we had staff from Moses Unified School District we had students of future students from going to the Marines and we had community member community members and you know we're really thankful for all the volunteers we had over 50 volunteers there I'm also the 13th annual Cathy's Crewcuts for kids it was a great success they cut hair children over
a hundred children were there from the community and they received haircuts backpacks school supplies and again I want to thank contouring rubber bands office and mayor Rocha and all the volunteers that helped making this beautifully that possible I did pass by the high schools and I do like the new Marquis in all the summer projects you know one week I see this big old mountain and wonder is up you know still gonna be there and now it's there gone and I want to thank all the people involved in dr. Kaminsky and her staff Karen Howard MOT all the schools administrators and the staff that had to move I know it was a very hard thing to do but I really want to thank them all for making it possible and you know doing it at
the right time and I know Linda dr. Clemente you know let a big part in that and I really appreciate everyone's help and since this gentleman came up I just need to say this one thing I did sneak regarding the ready-mix but I did speak and I mentioned that yes I am a board member by I was speaking as a residence there's nowhere at all that I said that the board voted there's nowhere that I mentioned that the board approved on anything so I just want to make that clear my daughter doesn't live in that area and I was voicing my own opinion and I did state that thank you well hopefully we're all gonna have a good week back basically I wasted my time running up to Maine in Massachusetts for my father-in-law's 90th
birthday so I have a lot of pictures I didn't recommend to anybody who loves history should go cuz I got a picture right in front of the most photographed lighthouse in Maine and I got to see oh no there's a shock in the harbor but so good luck everybody and thank you so much first of all I would like to thank everyone from the district I know that each year as the school starts the school year starts you guys are already have already put months into it and so thank you and for the teachers administrators thank you for getting everything ready for our students to come back on Thursday and for the kids this Thursday is your first day I have a senior my son will be a senior at Gladstone High School he actually
just did say where school shopping and he said mom is the last time you have to buy me school supplies this is the last time you buy me a backpack this you know and one of the things he said was um this Thursday will be my first of my last day at Gladstone high school and the greatest thing that he said to me was you know I've had the best years of my life here at Gladstone High School ad and Asuza Unified School District and you know as a mom yeah every hat that I wear in this district I just brought them to tears because he is very grateful for his education to all his teachers and everybody that has made this possible for him so I did want to bring that up that a
lot of kids students are this will be their last year or their first year in kindergarten so yeah good luck to the all the students and the teachers in the first day I I did want to also thank the administration for the marquees I can't wait to see them running I saw them up and I had to stop and take a picture at Blackstone high school and Asuza high that is a great honor I I've had a many people reach out to me and wow this is great you know and so it is a great thing happening in our community and not only does impact our high school community but it impacts our community as a whole those things do and it was long long long coming so I did participate in the cool cuts
for kids and we did see about over a hundred students it was open to teachers as well I didn't see teachers there hopefully next year and just to see the kids smiles it was just amazing this year what they had different was they had manicures for the kids so you would see you would see the little kindergartens going up there and getting their little yes getting their little nails done and it's my first time ever getting a manicure and it was the cutest thing I had it sit there and take pictures and it has brought joy to my heart and I think Robert Gonzales councilmember Robert Gonzales for sharing this with us too in our community and for allowing us to participate and volunteer and to share this great joy with with the Archimedean students
so and so kick off to the first of first day to everyone thank you and for me I'll just say and welcome back everyone I know you're all frantically trying to do last-minute things before school starts in a couple days so I'm really excited for that there's one thing that I just I did want to mention that I'd neglected to mention last week up from the leadership seminar and that is I really appreciated the way that Linda you and the assistants oops were able to sit and let the administrators submit anonymous questions for you to ask so I think that was great just to have this have that dialogue and there was one question that's like has been stuck in my brain I mean it was a very long question but it was really around
this the question of we talk about how we know that test scores are not a good measure of our students right we know we all know we know you've heard them to talk about how the the best correlation you can make the test scores is the economic background of a student yet we continue as a system and as a district to use that stat one score that as the guidance for how we how we look at student progress and student outcomes and so I just want to encourage us to think as we move forward this year with strategic planning with El Cap development how can we be a little more go little deeper in the metrics that we choose so that we're not just saying we're gonna have look at CASP test scores and percent
increases and let's think about more about the the processes that we're putting in place whether it's the PLC's whether it's the kind of work that we want to see what formative assessment and let's let's make let's have those drive our metrics and not necessarily this easy one test score that we know is going to come out year after year so a little little high high global view but but I want to just you know I know we're going to be doing some deep thinking in the next couple months so I just want to throw that out there so with that we will move to the agenda and we will move on to the next item which is comments and reports by cabinet and superintendents so we'll start with art doodle thank you we too are
very excited teachers came back many teachers came back last week returned teachers are with this week and the students will arrive on pages so we're very excited about that I'm also excited to share even though it's a little girls down in 13.1 that's due to our relationship and our communication and I work with our Community Schools Initiative specifically with the Department of Health and Ageing we are going to get a student well-being Center at glass on high school and some staff that we're going to work with partnerships at Azusa High School but because of our relationship and our action they offered us a separate student well-being centre at Azusa high schools we're very excited to report that that's something that is on the agenda today for an MoU thank you mark thank you yes we're
really excited to get this year off it's kind of a year of all years with the with the consolidation and getting our classrooms up and ready well we're under major construction from our bond project so it has been a major undertaking in its with the thinks of our amazing MOT staff and our mis guys out there to make sure that we get all of our teachers and classrooms up and ready and I'll say a partnership with our with our unions as well you know anytime there's an issue a EA or CSC a is right there to support us and getting information out so it's a real collaborative effort to make sure everything is ready on day one so I'm excited too to get us going thank you yes I'll echo what the gentlemen have said
we're very excited to start off the school year it has been a busy busy summer and really this is our hrs busy season making sure that we're filling vacancies and one of the highlights of the summer for me with certainly last Thursday when we're able to bring our our new teachers and counselors psychologists just new certificate employees together and it was really a joint effort our superintendent kicked off the orientation and then it was a true partnership with our AAA partners who gave a general opening and really showed with mixed Avella we really showed that we're one district and then we went into focusing our own structure priorities and I have to give dr. Mitchell a lot of credit for really working with me and we put this essentially a lesson where we demonstrated to
our teachers as well as our support certificated staff what our instructional focus is here and it's a great way to start and we when we went in to lunch that was provided by our AEA partners I had different new teachers come up to me and say wow that was such a great way to start the year I'm super excited to be a part of this team and this family so really off to a great start and wish everyone a fantastic year ok thank you and I'll look forward to hearing our student board member at the next board meeting speaking of which are all three board members registered to go to the cast training just if you can find out for them for me get back to us that would be great and it would be
great Adrian if at the next meeting you can have an update about what's happening with the student board member okay great okay so next we have item night actually I want to I have actually and I might have a long list of thank-yous because I'm summertime and getting ready for a school year doesn't happen easily unless everybody chips in and everybody participates and helps out and that really has been the case this summer I'm going to start by thanking I'm Darren Howard and mot and mark for the work that they did to make the most go as smoothly as we called to facilitate the construction projects and to be there in a pinch and just to be available at the moment's notice to try to help out with all the office stuff that we were
working on then I'm going to move right over to Marvin creation and I asked about the bad gang with all the computers unless you're you know seeing all those computers are seeing all those classrooms that need to be cleaned here right there it's hard to realize how much work it is one of the things that I've had the experience of doing I've been driving by all the schools under construction every day every morning and so I've seen the piles of dirt whittled down and in and if I if I happen to hire a paramount this morning and they I think they had two piles left I'm thinking oh yeah they're still there but on the other hand last week they were 20 so you know it's it's making progress so thank you told he also
had a chance to visit the teachers at these schools that have the move so I went to paramount I've been to Paramount been to Valley Dale I've been to Murray and Magnolia and had a chance to talk with some of my teachers just to thank them for the work that they did and to hear something when I said I imagine you didn't think you were going to do that much physical labor at this point in your career they laughed knowing that it is a lot of work to move and so I wanted let them know that we all appreciate it very much I also went to see her high school they move to and I'm getting used to their new digs and they I think they liked them they were very happy to be there
me also had a chance to go to class in high school in Ellington and just to see the energetic people bring to the start of the new year's are very reassuring I also want to thank our photo and Leslie Ford and General aney and work that I've been doing on helping us working with the county trying to put in place an early handsome growls maybe some babies if you do home visits it's a very difficult program for us to put in place because of the cost parameters are very rare almost impossible to meet so we're not sure that we can actually do it yet but we have worked we've had many many meetings all summer long to try to see if we can make this work for us so that we can offer that services
to kids and we're committed to Daniel it's the partnership the logo doesn't work out we'll follow other leads and make sure that we can move in that direction because it is important for our little kids and I also want to thank you for the new teachers I was my first day teaching and actually the day that I got hired I just thought I was floating on there because it was a dream come true I had grown up I was wanting to be a fresh-caught teacher when they I thought I was interviewing for fourth grade and then I said well you're gonna be a first grader everything that's perfect that is just perfect I was so excited and to see that enthusiasm of that excitement their faces is very gratifying thank you everybody thank you all
right moving on we have item 9 report action of closed session item no action was taken in closed session today and next we have 10.1 the district technology update good evening board president vice president board member superintendent cabinet and audience very pleased to be here today to talk a little bit about technology but Before we jump into technology we want to start off by talking about teaching and learning and what role technology plays in teaching and learning as you may be aware a couple of years ago we adopted a brand-new math series from pre-school all the way through high school at the elementary that's called dm4 at the secondary that's called CPM those are abbreviations those are the products that we use we realized pretty quickly that the new curriculums the new frameworks the new
standards were not like before and that there were a lot of technology components that would enhance both teaching and learning in our classrooms and so we made an executive decision that with the curriculums we would be supplying teachers with Chromebook hearts so that they would have access to technology and that that kids would have access to the technology when they were in their classrooms we did the same thing for English language arts teachers we did the same thing for fifth and fourth grade teachers and this year we're following that pattern and we will be supplying our history social science teachers with new Chromebook art and our third grade teachers with new Chromebook arts as a side note that is not only our core teachers in in the general head but that includes our spent teachers
our eld teachers and our intervention intervention teachers as well and so why why are we doing that right talked a little bit about that but why why are we adopting a new series but also providing access to technology to our teachers and our students well the one thing we know is that we have new learners right depending on what you read or what term you want to use some people call them digital natives right kids who are who are born into technology right the kid that's swiping the TV right hoping that something happens they use technology not just us consumers but they use it to produce they use it to communicate and they use it to think these are our digital natives right this is how they use technology we know that the new curriculums
in the state of California are keeping up pace with technology and that the curriculums are 21st century curriculums we know that when we adopt a new curriculum we are offering our teachers and our students hybrid opportunities where teachers and students have have flex in terms of technology paper pencil book Chromebook pass out the homework as you're walking now assign the homework through Google classroom there's all these hybrid opportunities that our students and our teachers and our parents are having access to and we know that we wanted to ensure that there was equitable access to technology for all teachers and students and that that Honus had a fall on us to ensure that that equity and that axis was available to teachers to classrooms and to kids that it didn't matter what school you were at
didn't matter what level you were at that you had access to this technology at this point in time before we move any further I'd like to give you a glimpse you know as we talk about hybrid options and technology to reach a 21st century curriculum want to give you a little insight into what that might look like and for that I'd like to introduce dr. Mitchell thank you good evening so last year you remembered that we formally adopted our history social science curriculum at the secondary level and we adopted my world interactive for the middle school and we adopted for the high school impact California and this like Arturo said this program is not only print material but it also has interactive technology as well that supports teaching and learning and so to give us
one example of this instructional technology for middle school and one from high school I'm going to introduce you to off the is Zimmer who is our new teacher on special assignment for our HSS want to go ahead and as she's walking over there and she's going to just show you it just a quick instructional example from Middle School in from high school I just also want to give off the a shout-out and a thank you last week she organized 25 of our middle and high school teachers they came together and then met by grade levels all last week to collaboratively plan instruction to really roll up their sleeves and dig in and just make plans as they're as we're all learning this new curriculum together and so it was it was wonderful to see them
and I'm so so appreciative of upper leadership and of all of the teachers that took their time before school even started to to begin this planning okay okay yeah hi thank you for recognizing me Dana I really appreciate it I appreciate your leadership this is new to me but I I really appreciate the materials that we've received for history social science just a quick background in 2016 state of California adopted a new framework for history the standards did not change but the framework did and there was then for instructional shifts that really became the focus and so it's really great to have new materials that are now aligned with that new framework and I can tell you from working with the teachers all last week that everybody's really excited to get into these new materials
and really they would they dove into it everybody stayed the whole time some people stayed even longer and they just they really wanted to start planning and and outlining how that how that was all gonna look and every day we're learning new things about it everything every day we are discovering new things on these digital platforms that are gonna be great for kids so I just wanted to show you a couple of quick things that I think will you know obviously we want the Dok levels to be those higher Dok levels in the classroom we want these to promote discussion and inquiry models in the classroom and things like that so I'm gonna just go one at a time I'm gonna start here with Pearson this is our middle school program and right now this
is what the teachers are able to go in and just sort of they call it a sandbox they're able to go in and sort of click on things and see what's available so these are our three levels and this one I'm gonna go into the eighth grade and what you can see is one of the things we have to get used to is that instead of chapter and section we have get used to topic and lesson and these are some of the topics that they will cover in anytime you see a little arrow here there's more things to see so there's more arrows by lesson there's more things to see and it's just full of primary source documents and our active pieces and things like that I'm gonna go in here and I'm gonna just
show you another way that you can find some resources which I think it's pretty cool and that is if I were to just throw in here the word let's say a constitution what you'll get then is a whole bunch of resource 262 results just for that they may or may not apply to whatever it is you're teaching for example if you're gonna teach you know Constitution United States versus the Iroquois Constitution but just to give you an idea I'm going to click on this so you can see what these primary sources look like and and why we're so excited about them so you get your introduction you get your primary source but what what we really like is then you get into these if you assign it to students you get into these boxes and
they're able to type in answers after looking at the primary source and then that's where we like to see these words write words like summarize here here we have compare and contrast we have again summarize but this is really key site specific examples you know really pushing the kids to use the primary source documents in their answers in to show that they really understand what it is you know that they're working with here so that's that's one piece and there's just tons and tons and tons of examples of each one so are these resources primarily for teachers to to teach the lesson and then in conjunction be able to give the students an extra resource so they can go ahead and summarize and the teacher can go back and see all this is this I
think it's both they they can use some of the sources to teach the lesson there's ways to set up basically a presentation where you you embed some of these things maybe even into like your notes and then maybe you have a whole class discussion based on a primary source that you pull there are videos that are there short ones all that have been you know vetted that you know so many times teachers are looking for resources on the internet and you're not totally sure or things can you know sometimes be blocked and so forth with which we understand and so this just gives them that peace like embed that in their presentations or to check with the students along the way by towing those that be their whole class discussion or by pushing them out
as assignments it whatever your assignment day I'm sorry not it is that kind of save time from googling everything you can just take it out of here pretty much yeah we're finding so many resources that teachers are able to what I think is great is that it really does allow them to pull together something that fits with their style or you know it and at the end of it all what we're discussing is next steps is this idea of okay what do we want the students to be able to do but in in accomplishing that it still allows the freedom in your classroom to pull the resources that you want to use it's really looking at skills right across all the content areas okay and then just really quickly because Dana and I particularly like
this one this is the 11th grade so this is going to be the high school platform it is different we adopted two different publishers and it looks so it looks a little different and if we go into our content here you're gonna see much the same thing you're gonna see drop-down menus and arrows that take them to various sources but one thing I wanted to show you is this thing called sync blast sync blast is really neat because it pulls up current events and we're always looking for that as well right how did it incorporate current events into our classes and so one of the current events that I had see I put in today just because I was interested if they had the story about Alaska which they do they talk about Alaska's hottest
month here so if you're going into like a government class or an economics class or even you know your history your history classes you can go to that gives you prompts gives you something a lot called a quick poll which I can show you really quick a writing prompt and and so forth and what you do as you push this out to kids as well and I'm just gonna preview it for you they call it a blast assignment it sends this out to the students and it gives them something to read it gives them some information as to what this number means maybe a video they can take a quick poll so when you assign this and they can click on whatever one they want it makes them you know it lets them to make
choices and then it just pulls how the students feel about this topic gives them some vocabulary development here and as they finish these tasks this will turn blue and in order for them to submit they have to complete the entire thing and that would include even some comprehension questions because those are still you know relevant especially in our history classes we want to know they're comprehending what it is they're reading and then this one called a blast which they're gonna get to type but what's really neat is that they get to review other students work and then they get receive reviews and if I were to finish this for you you'll see like a top ten award which means that you have reviewed five other students they every five of them have reviewed you that
kind of thing I'm sorry and there is it will show you if you've got things correct or not and it will give you some kind of remediation on that or even suggest some things for you to to go back and look at but it's just a really really nice nice feature so have have teachers been trained on this and how those teachers have been trained on this but of course we're gonna need some more time to go through all of these things because it is it's a lot we're like we're blessed that we have an abundance like so many things to choose from and like I said we're still kind of discovering even parts of of what it can do so it was really nice to pull people together and start that planning it is
there a test at the end of some of these there are tests at the end of the topics and in the case of the high school materials again we had to get used to more going into units we're so used to chapter one test chapter one chapter two test chapter two now there's there are tests but you can do quizzes and things like normal but then there's also tests that you can go in and modify or change around or bring in additional things to edit them to and you can add materials so let's say you want to throw in your own political cartoon or something like that you can you can edit things and and suited to that skill that you want to test and when we had kickoff professional learning in last spring so
the teachers had all the you know professional learning before they even you know are starting to teach this we have all the materials so we really backwards plan like that and of course this is an eighth year adoption and so it will be a continual process right in terms of supporting our teachers and our and our learning thank you so much little to say that so I was I was privileged to actually have mrs. Zimmer as my high school teacher history teacher so I'm sorry for all those moments but I don't think you knew that there was a school board member that was observing you you know they're out throughout those times in the class but just a pre appreciating who by then appreciating just just being able to see and recognize the teacher that
you were to me and were to so many others and and knowing that someone as gifted as you are in teaching and in teaching this cut this content is now giving leadership to other other history teachers here in the district and also bringing in you know the traditional means of teaching but using these new current 21st century tools is something that we're very blessed to have so just want you know that we appreciate I appreciate you we appreciate you just to wrap that up just one component that Dana failed to mention was that we did we have heard we have received feedback and oral feedback from teachers that have experienced working with out the others last couple of days and has has been all positive so so thank you for that so as you can
see as it was brought up right now it's not just about providing the technology but but the professional learning that's going to have to go into how to integral technology into our new curriculums so as we're working as a net services team as a Tosa team those are supporting teachers that is something that we are pushing ourselves to say how are we modeling how are we supporting how are we growing our staff in terms of that professional learning because we know that that's something that that we need to we need to support and we need to encourage and we need to motivate and we need to make sure that that's something that we're growing on and growing in to date this has been possible because of the outcome right the the the supplying school classrooms
and teachers and students with with with the technology has been possible because of the outcome currently those funds if you can remember the spreadsheet that we have currently those funds in Dana's location and that's that's what we have been using if the Al Capp moving forward right continues to to support this then we are looking forward to next year as we start to embark on a science adoption TK 12 that we look to do the same thing with secondary science teachers and then move to second grade teachers in the in the district so at this point in time I want to talk a little bit about that and Chromebooks and you know where we are with that and try to speak a little bit about a a plan that we are presenting in terms of
refreshing and reflect and replenishing Chromebooks for years to come want to emphasize again that this is not about technology for technology's sake but how it goes hand-in-hand with standards frameworks teaching learning curriculum so the idea is that we want to ensure that on a rotating basis we are providing working and dependable technology to our teachers and to our students in our classrooms by by doing this and we already kind of talked about that this would assure that there's that there's equity and then there's access in classrooms for teachers for students as they're navigating throughout their day at a 5th grade classroom it's in their classroom in a middle schoolers are moving from language arts to mathematics to Sciences you know social studies and so forth by having a rotating plan we feel that this is
also fiscally responsible technology it has a time bomb right a ticking clock that's going to expire at some point in time and so by by investing in technology in phases versus trying to jump into one lump sum eventually you're gonna have to get to that one lump sum again without knowing what the future might hold and so by chunking it out in phases we increase the the the probability of being able to sustain a plan like this a plan like this would create an environment in our district where we would be able to mark it and say and promote that when you come to the Unified School District you live in a one-to-one environment you live in an environment where you come to school you the student has a device for them not a share
not a lab not a you know at my group but I have a device when I go to math I have a device when I go to language arts I have a device that when I go to science unlike the old days you know when you were you know USB stick so you emailed yourself those days are again those are strange concepts to our students right they go to to math they log in with their Google account and they have access to everything they need they log out they leave the device there they go to language arts they log back in it's like they have the same exact device right nothing has changed and because again it is with their Google account they are working in embark in an environment where I as a student
have a device for me to use while I am here at school of course with a plan like this year over year one of the things that would happen is that there's another are there is that Chromebooks would have to be retired right so as you're replenishing and refreshing right you are also taking Chromebooks off of the inventory off of the network because we are supplying new technology to our teacher so again just as an example right we already did math and fourth and fifth grade eventually that's going to loop around and when it loops around that technology needs to be refreshed right in three short years of doing this we have gone from a Chromebook that's a basic machine that you login to you have access to your drive it works great to the
next year we went to touchscreen at it at almost no cost at all to this year history social studies teachers are going to get touch flip dual cameras again for in in essence right the the same price but they're still Chromebooks exactly so so so think about I can't even imagine what happens the next time it comes to math like what are we talking about right what would be that when when that happens and so as we think about retire retiring if you will for lack of a better word what we would like to propose as an idea to throw out is that as we retire Chromebooks on a year-to-year basis that we issue a device to every single incoming ninth grader at the high school to have as their own device right these are
Chromebooks that are coming off the tail end this is not taking devices from classrooms this is not taking devices from what we have you know currently in classrooms and it's like Oh Dana I'm sorry I'm not to take your Chromebooks now Dana still has our Chromebooks but as we are retiring Chromebooks off of our inventory and off of our list that we would issue ninth grade every single 9th grade student that wants one we would issue a device to them for their high school experience now unlike a because one to one has a lot of different meanings to a lot of different people unlike a traditional one to one where mr. Greer and Miss Pena you guys are ninth graders and I'm gonna issue your device but it's a mission you the device as a
textbook in other words I'm expecting that back this this this would not be that this would be I am issuing you a device for your high school experience as your device that you take ownership of that you get to keep you take it home yeah and keep after high school and keep after high school so it's a pretty common approach now with high school so it says a lot that's how they generally do their one to once yeah that's great so so that's the idea and that every year right as ninth graders come in that we would have the inventory of Retired devices that would be able to support them if you recall last year we partnered with Sprint on the 1 million project and we had different options of what we want to do
and we opted to do devices right but devices you mean a tablet my devices with me a tablet yes if we were to do something like this we can and actually we have to because they no longer have devices but we can still participate in the 1 million project and get hotspots so that students are getting a Chromebook and a hotspot not every student so I want to be very clear about that right it all depends on qualifying students but those that do qualify they would get a hotspot that they can then use with their Chromebook right if that's what they that's what they chose to do in a very short four years right every single high school student would have on our campuses what it would have a device I am going to venture
to put out there that not many students would be taking that back and forth because again when they come out to our campuses they have a one-to-one environment right everywhere they're going they have a device now of course that doesn't mean you know lunch or after school or whatever but that would be up to the student to be able to do or not to do so that that is what we are proposing and if if this is something the next step would be for us to bring forward a board resolution to the board that would that would outline that process so I I mean I just want some clarification show you so you're what today am i understanding right so you're going to continue to have the Chromebooks in each of the classrooms and then
additionally a sign is that a new Chromebook or is one of the retired from a new Chromebook to every student no so one of the as we are purchasing and retiring or taking off right it would be from from that from that path so I mean just in terms of like duplication I mean I I think as a board member would want to better understand in terms of just like numbers what does that mean I mean I think I feel I I don't as an individual to understand why we wouldn't assign a single Chromebook to a single student and then they would use that in all their classrooms and they would take that home right and they would be responsible I mean III hearing from other just we've done that right they find that the
breakage radar that it's actually very low right that the kids really take care of them so so I think I need to understand why you're going in this direction as opposed to that idea that we're going to give a child the device they're going to use it on their classrooms they're going to take it home and use it with whatever assignments are given because because what you're saying is very different than that yeah so again just some points to consider and think about let's move away from technology for a quick second and we've been moving to adoptions talking about book paper/pencil adoptions one of the things that came to our plate from teachers was that they really wanted to negotiate and propose that we had class sets and the reason was various reasons number one
carrying books back and forth kids not bringing their book to school and now we have you know this lesson and they don't have their so now I have to you know buddy them up with somebody else that having a class tab would be something that would that would really really really help meaning the printed printed classes correct right forget technology this is just right okay and so we were able to negotiate that for our HSS teachers we got that actually for gratis and so we're you know pretty happy about that so in the in the same in the same vein right one one of the reasons is that when the technologies in the classroom then you are you're ready to rock and roll you're set we're not worried about spitting we're not worried about charging
we're not worried about you know I forgot mine you know forget breakage like we're just talking about that that's one aspect another aspect is management right so if if if the idea is to do the original about gifting then that becomes a non-issue but if it's about checking in and checking out then management becomes a consideration as well in terms of managing the devices keeping the devices up and running making sure that they have all of our policies on them you know those those kinds of things so that would be another another prompt to it if you will and then lastly again this is just a take on it is that by doing the classroom one-to-one environment when you're on the campus again that is ensuring equity and access in from from where we're standing
so when you when you come to the classroom it doesn't matter what happened you you're having access to to to technology when you jump on to our campus we have the we reference the 1 million sprint project not to a couple of sentences ago and we issued one devices and and one of the one of the caveats on that is that the kids are actually using it so we were getting feedback and pressure to say hey your kids are not jumping onto the devices is that training is that marketing or is that the kids already have devices at home and this one was just you know whatever or they were having difficulty don't know but but what we do know is that a large percentage of the students we're not using the device we have
again just so doing I mean is this I mean so do we know why they're not or this is like recent development um Marvin do I think this was at the latter part of the year well I think I'd be really interested in understanding why and forgiving I mean why what comes out of that sure again as another just soft you know data point we just met with a with with a school a teacher who's very interested in technology does a lot of Technology stuff she pulled the entire everything was a school at the grade level and only one student claimed or said that they don't have access to to a device at home now so this is but I mean so that's a good question do we do we understand what kind of access
our students have at home do we have do we think we have a strong we have yet we do have it we do know this well we have a couple of indicators number one we do have the out cap survey I mean but that's a small percentage of our of our parents filling it out well it's it's there's two pronged there's the parent but then there's the students the middle school and high school students who who responded and we have a high percentage rate of student participation in the outcome so so again device so that so that's one you said there was a couple methods so that's one method or the other methods or that is the method that we're tracking it access internet access at home no I mean as far as formal that's
it but again we do have these other informal don't want to say that they're formal data points but informal data points suggesting that access to technology when they leave the campus is not a a huge inhibitor so I mean I I kind of I feel that moving forward I would like us to find a way to figure out you know more concretely how many of our families have access or need access and or if we if we get giving the information about low-cost access because there is low class access out there so that they're aware because I think you like we're talking about equity here right but as we move towards technology and maybe where people are signing more things online or on computers right I I don't want us to over see that piece
and just make assumptions based on a often survey that we think oh everyone has access are we just for terribly saying that before we move forward to try to decide what we're no no no no I'm just saying I think that should be just I think that I think that's actually part of what we did try to make sure that I'm trying to figure that out I'm not saying that has to be part of technology of the technology moving forward with adoption I'm just saying I think as a district who wants to talk about equity and access that I mean we need to think about that piece right sure also can you share with us this Friday the the percentage of students who have indicated that they do indeed have access and then also the
sample size percentage to the population on update yeah so also well well Jennifer it gets for price to well just off the top your head if you have some indicators but again just a very soft again we don't have one school and I don't remember if it was the school the great looking well it doesn't matter it was either the school the grade level like student by student and only one student saying that they don't have a device or access to technology when they leave the school and again this is just one case right but it was student by student not nothing formal Jen do you know off the top of your head I know it was high and and you remember and you remember in regards to students what percentage of students we had
I know it was super high compared to the previous years I don't want to get caught up in that I think we're asking just like moving forward it'd be good to have to have understanding of that yeah for sure and is there a parent agreement form did you give them yeah if we again if if we may there there would be a couple of things that would have to happen number one a board resolution a board resolution we've talked about a sign-off agreement right that they understand that they're taking ownership of the device and all that good stuff and so that's that's how we that's how we would proceed but in general it's it's a board resolution it passes and that we move forward with inventory and working with the high schools to issue the
devices for the ninth graders and is it the teacher that monitors who has them in who's responsible so there will be no monitoring because again remember they know who has them and you know you're like that we're giving it we're taking the old we're taking the old chrome books that were no we're not there the old ones there like three years old right and we're gonna give it to them and say here you can have this oh okay oh wow so because when they come to the classroom they will have a device when they're in the classroom so we don't we don't need to worry or monitor that they're actually bringing their device to to school and as far as responsibilities just answer the second part of your question so that responsibility falls on the
student and the family thank you okay and then can you just clarify where we are in the cycle so we're already at the place where we can issue retired Chromebooks to ninth graders this year if we move forward with it that is correct so right now we are the light-blue this would be this year history social science and third grade again that's in the out cap so that's that's already happening and then the proposal would be that next year we do science on second grade there is an off year there because of health then we move to language your first grade and so forth until we do back around so the first three bubbles are already done so it wouldn't be just so I'm clear the retired Chromebooks wouldn't be two or three years old
they'd be eight eventually but not right now no you're not gonna you're not planning keeping your saying so they're gonna get new Chromebooks every eight years in the classrooms is that that's not what this is is it that's what this is right now yes so I'm just so I'm gonna say I I know and I heard at the at the leadership seminar discussion of Windows 10 and Windows 7 computers right um so I I think I think this merits more discussion right because I mean there are trade-offs between the they're very very real issues of making sure that everyone's ready and prepared in a classroom to work versus an 8-year Chromebook replacement cycle I know I didn't use Chromebooks right I mean if you think about what a Chromebook was like eight years ago could
you imagine having to put that in a kids hands today right so so I think I just I feel like it I mean I I'm I have mixed feelings about this and not and I I'm very excited that you're investing in technology that that's in the kids hands and especially that it came out of out of ed services right as a priority but I also want to make sure that we are providing those up-to-date resources that our students and our teachers need to be able to function well in a classroom right additionally or even a ticket further so if I'm a ninth grader and I received an eight year old Chromebook to use for the next four years of high school and Beyond that's that's now a 12 11 12 13 14 year-old device absolutely
and again we don't have to get in the weeds but again Chromebooks compared to laptops or devices that run on Windows right those are two very different or high and four in regards to longevity in regards to update capabilities shuffle right shelf life those are very different now again I just finished saying about it in three years right the difference between the Chromebooks that the math teachers got in the history social science we're just trying to balance a ensuring equity and access to the latest technology when kids come to our schools right that's that's the number one priority that we see when our kids attend our schools right we want to be able to say that they have the latest and greatest technology in the classrooms and trying to balance the fiscal responsibility about not
trying to react to something and then that again now that there is this big lump sum that eventually is going to have to rear its ugly head somewhere in the future so that this in in our opinion ups the ante and the probability that we can actually stick to a plan like this and guarantee that a plan like this works versus again something that may be fiscally can be done I don't know but then again the uncertainties of the future I believe that those odds turn it in a different in a different manner so we're trying to balance right the access the equity the 21st century the latest and greatest but also to the fiscal reality and fiscal responsibility any other questions before I turn it over to my next counterpart oh there's more this
is the we're gonna move I'm gonna shift to the fact that this right here right as board president pointed out right this is ad services and again thinking about teaching and learning that's why we opened it up that way and framed it in that manner that this is not about technology bells and whistles that this is about technology as a tool to integrate into my my learning my teaching my student engagement my environment but it's not possible without the infrastructure piece and so we're going to call it Martin to give you some highlights in terms of in terms of that good evening I just wanted to say that technology especially with my department kind of tends to be a one-way street when data has project projects always increases for infrastructure during the next funding cycle
for eBay which we believe is going to be twenty twenty to twenty eight twenty one school year but there is a little uncertainty regarding that we're looking to replace the infrastructure at all our sites has needed an increasing the number of drops to the classrooms using current data standards this improvement in infrastructure should make all of our schools ready for whatever technology you throw at them we anticipate these left dates will be in place probably over the next three to four years for our internet connection speed we're happy to announce that we're upgrading this year to ten gigs per second only I think my took over we were one gig when Bob is here I think like five or six years ago it was thirty five megabits per second so it's a tremendous increase that
will make all the students in our district I think and all the devices in our district work very fast and we shouldn't have any bandwidth issues for the next foreseeable future so so does this mean there's gonna be you said that there's no possible hiccups or anything with the band so there's no one there's not gonna be any digging there's not gonna have to no other major projects gonna have to be in place to put in 10 GB for that ten gigabytes that start at the edge for the internet that's the connection that actually goes with that arcade gig plan that we currently have for the in provement in the infrastructure that may result in some digging and things like that because we anticipate schools I know if you remember but we increased the backbone
at the two high schools we're planning on probably doing that at the middle schools and evaluating the Elementary's and seeing if they need anything like that but it drops themselves until the classrooms will probably be it either cat6 I know there's cat stepping out there now so it'll be as fast as possible and we'll need that for some of the other technology that we have kind of coming down the road so the technology then is future proof in that we currently have as high as 10 gigs but coming in boy but but what and are the cables that are running hubs they are able to sustain higher speeds or that they are limited at 10 gigs as well they are limited probably at those sites but we have the capability to increase to 10 gigs
that we have any bandwidth issues will continue to kind of monitor it and see do hi I was just gonna throw something out there that I had gone to a meeting with a group that works with Cisco and what they do if in the future we could cooperate with the city and with school district installing these they go on the light poles and what they would do is pull the bandwidth from 5 p.m. until whatever the any students that don't have internet they can hook on to that I actually have a thing for you if you want to see it I took Abbott in my car but it's a really neat system in the future if we want to look at fare for all of our students that that would be such an awesome idea
anything sorry about that we are looking at four phones of different makers like three or four different ones so we want to go to a voice over IP system is there a power point associated with this that's not up for answer okay I see some of the handouts that's not yours part phone okay okay so we're planning on doing this year Slauson and the district office or fire and security you don't really think of fire and security systems and regards to technology upgrades we anticipate upgrades of these systems at all of our sites for the next three four years as well the new technology will allow key administrators whether their site or district to control their alarms via apps on their for smartphones thus eliminating the need to involve on call when a teacher or
staff member means to access school site during off hours or the intercom systems we plan on integrating are implementing an integrated system it's lossen that has the two-way communication capability we use for emergency notification and the bell schedule which has been controlled by site administrators either via computer or an app we anticipate bryggen all sites to this type of system over the next four or five years as we evaluate the current state of the intercom at schools and develop a priority schedule for replacement in regards to current devices our interest as you mentioned is removing the potentially vulnerable devices from our network we do step a little longer be supported by Microsoft in the January to we'd like for all of our teachers staff to have the latest technology available to them I mean anticipate
upgrading these older models over the next three or four years we're hoping to get establish some sort of schedule so that we don't go through this again we have some teachers have very old technology others so when you say upgrade them so you're going to upgrade to Windows 10 or you're going to replace the old computers those that have to keep we will upgrade to Windows 10 but if there are older processors like old enough that they really could not support Windows 10 then we probably waste them and then when you say 1200 or 1500 Windows 7 machines just out of just what's context of how many machines total do we have and I would say Windows not not including the Chromebooks Windows computers yeah PCs so a good half of them a third to
a half of them are running Windows 7 and you have any idea percentage-wise of that that can sustain Windows 10 or is that unknown at the moment not we're not really sure some of them were taken back whenever they were first roni because the staff at that time were comfortable we might have some doubt already have a stick with you just have to be upgraded we are purchasing some licenses of that so what does the process look like um your ear you guys you're speaking about replacing all Windows 7 and upgrading them to Windows 10 so what does the process look like gonna start with elementary with high school do you have an idea of what that looks like we haven't really sat down and kind of broken it out by site yet so we've
currently done is as they become available to us that people turn one in because they're having an issue with it or they have a virus because we have a bunch of virus was back in January then we kind of look and evaluate the particular computer and see if you can take Windows 10 if it can we upgrade to Windows 10 if not then we've looked to see what would you like the best option for some teachers it's taking their desktop and you know finding a new desktop for them for some it is a laptop since they use that in the classroom and we have some instances where I guess at one point there was like an Ares computer and so we have a teacher that has a computer that was provided as part of the
Ares initiative a few years ago they have another that they use to their projector so it might be a case of just retraining them that you can use the same computer for both I'm gonna recommend that you you have a plan of some sort and possibly you know start at the high school and kind of goes there and kind of assess like who who has ancient dinosaur computers and bad are crashing even when would with Windows 7 and kind of work backwards because what it sounds like is that you don't have a game plan you don't have and program here and so I it's kind it kind of sounds like you're all over the place but I mean to make this happen I I would really like to see you starting somewhere and kind of
concentrating on that those grade levels and kind of moving you know to the next grade level like middle school and whatnot we have cuz they're like the Gladstone Street they had a lab that's we pulled all those out at Gladstone high school they had a new Mac lab that replaced Rangers great I understand it but I think that once we get through pull down and see where the biggest we need are then we'll decide where that kind of prioritize by sight I'm speaking about teachers some teachers have and I know this for a fact because um I was in one of the classrooms that computer has been there for over 20 years and their you know so I'm speaking about teachers yeah if that can be possible please a couple couple questions yeah I just
wondered if there's a way to well first when we're looking at January when we're saying Windows 7 is no longer supported right we is the plan are at this at this stage to wait for the teachers to come forward and say that they have having issues meaning that we will have computers past January that are still on Windows 7 or is there a plan to update to Windows 10 before we with the changes that we made in our network back in January February March because of the virus right if the big vulnerability is that they're not gonna be updated by Microsoft so if those computer can track the virus we have rules in place that was like shut down got it that computer so it isn't like everything has to be done anywhere okay that
we definitely would like they have kind of move forward and have teachers and that's what we're looking at primarily have the latest Windows machines it wouldn't be possible to get a timeline on how you're gonna be replacing these devices I would really like the wrong time I think so many things but I want to share with you moment is being very conscious right now because last year the amount of funds that we have budgeted from these kinds of technology upgrades were invited to deal with a major firewall problem that we had a major virus problem then affected and I don't know how many computer stations in it that that emergency required us to change route and a half time we it not just people's workload so the he's being cautious because we are looking very
carefully at the funds that are available to do that and so yes they have a sense of norms that what they need to do most of unfortunately are not with the exception of the one you mentioned but most are not computers that people are using as the digital because so many people have the Chromebooks now they probably are so they're most of them as he had indicated before actually in labs and so their priority will be to first of all take well that's an absolute need or something that we're wrong with that computer as they bring it in that gets adjusted right away based on on that need so it's an that based focus without looking at but within the context of the fact that the amount of money that's available is much diminished and
so trying to balance those two things and so you can get you an update on that after a while so what it would it be possible do we have I mean do we have like an internal database so you could let us know at each school set we have this many computers with Windows 7 Windows 10 yes that's what they nursed for their own planning right so I think it would just be help for the board if we could see that just so that we understand what it looks like I think that that would be very helpful that we wasted or kind of focus in on teachers because they are right but I think I think what I'm saying is right now for us support to understand I think we want to understand what what
the situation is right now okay so that's not - right just so that we understand where we're starting from would you like it broken down by I think we can't let I mean work with Linda to figure out that I submitted so the board but I think we just want American kernel also how that with what data is available how we can categorize it so it makes sense and it's understandable and then one last question there's there are a couple of instances where you mentioned Slauson middle school as as kind of like the starting place for VoIP and other things is there is there a reason is there they just attest you saw earlier in the process of being modernized and then I do it are you done weight transfer or do is there more
on here I know we jump to the questions very quickly yeah so I do I do have just one more question and then as I notice I we did get a group of slides and so I'm one of them I know too talked about we have a policy of discouraging users from bringing their own devices and so I just I just want to understand that I know I know some places have a Bo Y D device bring your own device right and have managed through all that process I mean so I'm just curious why we've gone down this pathway last year last year so very reactive approach because this is what I brought into supplying IP addresses they don't work we have to track those down and sing with printers and other things that people
have that they bring that can cause kind of disruption on the network so we asked them not to bring their personal devices for that reason and if they have like a need because a lot of times it was the computer in their classroom they wanted to bring their own device we tried to provide them with and then my other question is I noticed that you you talked about continuing to discourage that from using desktop printers so are we or is it first like there is it personal device printers that they're using or are we still supplying ink to personal printers as a district I guess maybe mark would notice one what are the two of you actually Mis and business services worked jointly on this but we do have computers with printers in the classroom
the only requirement is that they are a district printer with a label on them that identifies them for SoCal and we we supply the toner for those and if they break SoCal fixes them for us so all that is done through that mat print server process it is it is kind of an all-inclusive service that we get as long as it's a district printer that's hooked to the network and his toner-based so it's a laser printer yes so I I guess I was I was mistaken I thought last year or the year before when you brought this to us that you were gonna say we were transitioning away from individual printers and everyone was going to use the larger printer so we have spread out larger printers on the campus to encourage printing mass jobs
at those copy machines we've made them easier to access for staffing in trying to encourage that movement we have not started to put restrictions on number of prints yet because we wanted to make sure we were fully rolled out but that is something that we're looking at is setting caps on printing for those desktop printers to push printing to the more economic copy machines where you're paying much much less but we've seen a massive increase in printing on our copy machines as opposed to our desktop printers when we're looking at the end of the numbers I don't have them in front of me but we saw about a thirty thousand dollar decrease in total print printing cost and then we saw a large increase going to our copy machine so just with having them available
made that option happen kind of naturally I just have one last comment and that's I think this is great bringing our district to up to par in technology and how our curriculum is right there with them because the students I mean technology is the future here and the students are more interactive with you know at the Chromebook you know and for teachers to be able to go online and be able to teach a lesson assign something and receive something back we're on the right tracks I look forward to this development of this project so thank you thank you alright moving on we have item 10.2 appoint a board clerk I'd like to make a recommendation mm-hmm so I would like to recommend gab Gabrielle Ariana second any discussion seeing them Thank You vote please your
motion passes 5-0 gratulations go Deana alright so next we had on the agenda a point and board representative these just a Parks and Rec Commission and I'm gonna ask the board for if they'd be willing to hold off on this piece then the Parks and Rec Commission it actually does not does not meet until October right Linda when what is it you can take the decision at the end of September they went it by the end of September so that allows us some time sometime by the end of September and right now they have some they have some vacancies on through appointment through the apartment process of the city and so I think let's I prefer if we just wait to see like who ends up through that process and then and then we as
a board can decide can pick who is the representative would be for the parks recognition okay with that well I don't see what the holdup you still come so maybe somebody on this city so so ARPA are appointed positions are at ha are there ad hoc members they don't get to vote and so maybe somebody on this school board may apply to the city because they want to have a voting position on that board on the Commission mm-hmm and so if we were to appoint somebody and then they got appointed said like let's say Adrian applied mm-hmm but we appointed him right now then we'd have to get a point a third person in a matter of weeks Royce toe so it just let's just hold off and see so that we don't have to
do reappointments and shuffle around why she's that good yeah okay that's fine all right great okay great so we'll skip that one and we want to the next item and that's nominations for the CSB a director at large so the California School Boards Association has regional directors but they also have what are they called directors at large and they're they're elected they're nominated by bicycle districts across the country CSB is delegate assembly and and so districts have the opportunity to nominate somebody and so for this year the directors at large that are up african-american American Indian and county directors at large and as you know I'm on the CSB Executive Committee so I don't actually recommend that we nominate anybody I think we don't really have a vested interest right now and those we're not
really served we don't really serve those students in our district but I wanted to make sure it was on the agenda because what what I've seen in the past is if things aren't on the school board agenda on an annual basis sometimes they you know they don't relate to the next year and so that's why I had us I asked Linda to keep this on the agenda so that we would at least see this and so next year they'll be nominations for the Hispanic Director at large and at the Asian Pacific Islander director at large so that so that you'll see that in a year from now I would just like to highly recommend that when this comes up again Adrian - you'll be that much versed on the CSB a and I encourage you
to so that that's why this is on there but but I don't recommend any nominations at this time so we'll move on to the next item unless there's a nomination all right seeing none we'll move on to item 10.5 approve is this Unified School District call for a moratorium on charter school expansion and strengthening of transparency and oversight and governance and practice resolution 19 2008 and I prefer every take a motion I just want to say that this this resolution came to us a sample language from our partners from the from CSC a right Linda right and so this is a resolution that speaks to several pieces of legislation that are right now going through the process up in Sacramento right now and so um so I'll put this on the table as there is
there a motion here make a motion to approve 10.5 motion by Yolanda Pena second by Adrienne Greer yes any discussion so this I mean I would say that this has nothing to do with what happens to our school sites um so this this resolution really is directly relates to simple like I said several pieces of legislation that are right now going through the legislative process up in Sacramento through our state Senate and through our state assembly and so this resolution calls out make several warehouses and calls out several resolutions that directly relate to issues that districts across California face when it comes to charter authorization laws that that I would say that I agree with personally but I would hope that as we both that we all agree into this passing this just sends a
message and we would we would share this resolution with our state representatives that this is our position when it comes to charter authorization it has nothing to do with I would say internally whether whether whether or not what happens to one of our school sites or nor does it have anything to do with let's say if someone wanted to start a charter in this in this city or in our state in our school district is that clear yeah yeah yeah Thank You Gabby I really appreciate that it is important to explain explain why we do things any other questions or comments all right please place your votes okay motion passes five-0 moving on we have item ten point six authorize the sale and issuance of general obligation refunding bonds resolution 19 2005 make a motion
I'll second okay motion by a drinker seconded by Jerry Bibles logo and if you'll recall we had a lengthy presentation at the last board meeting on this yeah so any discussion see none place your votes please motion passes 5-0 moving on we have item ten point seven ratify approved change order number one paramount underground utility upgrade its our motion I'll make a motion motion by Jerry Bibles Vogel's second by Gabriella are they honest any discussion dr. Kaminsky can you please explain certainly when a program there are certain things that can happen on score and certain things that need to happen only in the summer because they impede access to the campus one of those is underground utilities and you know you know because our neutrality is it's Lawson at Dalton and some storm drain work
others is a high school addition to their current we're doing a paramount because of the extensive parity that needs to have any Rico we saw a video of that you know a shot at the tension would basically the whole campus is filled with punches and of course smells of dirt where they excavated dad goes and it must be done during the summertime when kids are not here typically given they the start date of the day after school ends and the finish day the day before school starts so they have as much time as possible all of us knows I've never done any kind of them repair look at your hardware if you try to modernize as a kitchen or a bathroom or anything like that sometimes you don't know what's in the walls and in
this case sometimes we don't notice under the crown until you get there and so it's not unusual practice every single one of the underground projects that we've had has had to come back and ask for extra time to do it that's one that paramount is side I need 43 days to financial fragile other projects explained to us during of the tours that's done done and done so the first done is the facility ready for occupancy in other words can you access the classrooms can you get onto the campus in a safe manner and all of our projects have been able to meet that standard and there's another level of donor which is all some of the finishing work some of the temporary seating another campus back as close as you can to the original condition
and then there's the third time which is typically a year later when you have you see isn't really working the way we thought so as projects are done for the first level of occupants and to some people living in their attempt to finish off some of the additional work this project I'll check my records awesome just like took extra 60 days so I'm just supposed to say hey I found underground sometimes it's a change and you've added something so we for example adults and we added some extra scope as there's also its mission of the project giving out of dance a later than we had to submit it and even grades or servers as notice it couldn't start right on time so that's a very common thing to happen later you know what else tonight
we've got that 60-day window basically in silver about to get that magic down and we do have to just when it takes longer it's the same amount because when we when contractors come and do it on the project that bid for the project the only time the costs go up as if there's a change in what you want them to do sometimes the best example I give is a couple years ago we did Center and nobody knew until I got on the ground that the connections that I can release online where it's not where I always buy a large cement wall underground that nobody could see until you actually dug up the ground so those things happen and also things I don't have to get used to [Music] so I'm I'm curious to know because
a concern I have is when we when we help somebody who bids for our particular project there they're bidding for the amount but are they also bidding to say that they'll have it done by a certain date it's part of it however it's also somewhat of an estimate because they don't know exactly what they'll see until they actually get there and start the work and I even understand that but I guess from a point of accountability as we're looking at this and if something was supposed to be done on August 9th at what point did they realize that it's you we don't know what's under the ground but at what point when they get in the ground or they realize it's gonna take longer to be able to give give an indicator as opposed to
after the fact actually is just because it was some are working we don't meet during July you start meeting basically in August and so as they are finalizing that working through it's coming to us in August I don't know maybe maybe I don't know that the seventh day of August after our last board meeting or something like that with it then they before that but they have to do it right away and have to start doing the work and if I didn't give you the Russian today with the work would stop and then we wouldn't be ready for occupancy on the first day of school so are you asking are you asking about the ratification are you asking just about like you know when when people know that project was gonna have to be expensive
just just from from a point of process so so if we're bidding a particular project and saying that we're estimating that it's going to take this amount of time it does it is it up into the last week when they realize that there that there's an additional 43 days or no it is sooner you know by or weekly construction meetings my these topics get to attend their construction team which has influenced the the architect the consultant mark myself know a photo and Steve Falkenberg working to understand where they are and checking the progress and all the time so that in that money that's no no decisions are made if this is if this is a legitimate issue then it's my dress with extra time and the one we can bring it to the board when
we have a property we do that there's no means of so I understand it's being extended without additional monies that are that are being allocated but is there any means that we or even other districts do to hold different contractors accountable for particular dates deadlines I think so if we determined that if we determine it it's not a legitimate what is that process just from a process and point of accountability so really none of us here are able to answer that for you because we're only working with these current projects you'd probably need to have that discussion with for example a facility's consultant who's worked with like 20 underground utilities projects who could say to you has it ever happened that the request didn't seem legitimate or was the fault of somebody there are experiences
people find things underground that nobody knew where they find something in a world that of course you know you didn't know what's going to be there and you would have to adjust to that and so we have those discussions together listen to what the contractor saying with the architect to say what the facility insulted is saying to a judge if it seems legitimate or not how is that going to because the first level of doneness is that is the plant available for occupancy can students and teachers into the classrooms I was I was there this morning I was there yesterday I was there on the day actually checking of progress and seeing what's done for example at paramount part of the project will be since they had to excavate so much directive do you know
where all the trenches is you have to have a place to put the dirt so a lot of the dirt went onto the field which meant it covered up the grass which meant the grass died and so part of the project that is the next level of done is receding that you know fencing off that grass area so kids don't walk on it for a while and we're sitting it that takes a fan maybe a month or so for the class to start growing again so yes kids would for about a month maybe not bother to get on the grass but afterwards I mean that's part of the contractors are sorts abilities to get the grass growing again so that's the kind of thing that happens afterwards but for example they've done all the trenching
the trenches have been filled already if you think of paramount this the where the school is laid out with the wings they've all gotten new cement walkways for the fifth day of all the all the asphalt which has been replaced by the classrooms as well as in the kind of yard field area yard area the announcement panels put down by the entrance for the nutrition surfaces trucks come in which are very heavy so that that was an upgrade for us so that stuff is all done and ready to go as well as the pore structure it's just for example the grass hasn't come in and because they're still coming back they took out so much dirt in between the buildings they have to reseed that completely classrooms the cafeteria yeah it's awesome and I have
to say to yourself and to students they understand you know you've you know you don't want to walk on the grass of all it's growing because you want to make sure grows and I was up at slice in about a week and a half ago linking at the lumber and yeah you couldn't even tell that it was you know I remember the whole thing was covered up with mounds of dirt the whole thing never thinking I would see it as beautiful as it is now so it is a process and it and so far we've been very fortunate because every single one of these projects is worked well so last year there was a lot of parents there was a lot of community members asking why the project was not done asking why you know
there was an extension and so now my question to you is what are we doing as a district to be able to communicate that I mean one of the things I think that's a good question and so partly it's having these discussions right here where we talk about well what happens and why what are the reasons for example many of them are things well known is always what I ask them to do something different like it doesn't I ask them to an asphalt another portion of the yard to finish it off but if we don't ask for an additional scope of work if anyone is it's unforeseen things that could not happen no the other issue is DSA division of state architect for example the next one on here is the Marquise and one of
the reasons that we need some extra time there is because in fact one of the projects got out of DSA later than we were expecting and that can happen from time to time and we have no control over that's completely up to the state there was the one they put out the approval for those projects at the conclusion of our summer projects because that's where most of the work happens so after that together that's mounted every single home within our district counties projects with before and after pictures showing them what we've accomplished motion passes five-0 moving on we have item 10.8 approved change order number one is there there's two change order number one oh that's for it for that over okay school marquee replacement at various sites Azusa high and Gladstone high school make
a motion to approve ten point eight my second any discussion okay seeing none place your votes please motion passes five zero moving on to the consent calendar items listener to the consent calendar considered routine by the board and will be enacted by by the board in one motion unless someone wishes to pull one of the items anybody wish to point item I would like to pull an item eleven point six seven point six okay any others yeah eleven point four and an eleven point five all right any anything else okay so is there a motion to approve the consent calendar removing eleven point four eleven point five and eleven point six I'll make a motion no second motion by a drinker second by Jerry Bibles Vogel please place your votes in favor organs the motion
passes 5-0 moving on we'll move on to item 12 point what used to be eleven point four is now twelve point one can we take a whiff we have to vote separately all right so um what did you want ask yes so my questions are actually in line with with these two and also the eleven point I guess now would be twelve point three which is just just in general when we're looking at at some of these consultants these these are our consultant consultants that we're bringing back they've been with us before and as as we're you know voting on renewing consultants contracts I think it'd be valuable for us to have some means of evaluation or some means of product that has you know has been completed or feedback so to to better help
us and inform us to vote that these funds are being expended in any kind of way so the question would be one is there any kind of process and is there the the feasibility for there to be a process of evaluation thank you a thorough and retain could you intercept please this is this is a consult for the magico consults in general I suppose I'm as we're looking at these so let's take those separately though because I think eleven so 11.4 net five are related to the my dad's you program so that's different than that those are instructors and with students versus the next one which is actually a consultant working with our staff so let's pose your question twice so let's ask you first about mariachi yes sir thank you that's a good delineation
and the word consultant is driven by the contract right so unlike cousin pointed out these are not consultants in the term that they're consulting but they actually are instructors that happy with the NASA program cost for over 10 15 years and there are instructors that team up with a teacher from Flickr middle school by the name of Carlos Perez Rodriguez and together they are the ones that instruct produce and grow our Madonna program so why are we calling them consultants and not instructors may be understandable sir maybe Jorge you can chip in here but again my understanding is that the contract is a consultant contract because they're independent director yeah we're not hiring them as Asuza employees which would require us to take board action at a different part of personnel report so we do
contract them for a service that's defined in the contract but we don't we do not actually and play them like we would a teacher or any other district employee go to the process of hiring a teacher requires credential there are very strict rules as far as that person needing to add a teaching credential which is above and beyond a bachelor's degree that need to be cleared so it is a higher bar for our our for our for our instructors to to serve these kinds of programs if we make that as a requirement we may not have individuals like the ones that are in front of you today that would be able to work with our students to provide these in my opinion amazing programs because I just happen to love mariachi be like a stipend
like we do after-school sports such as like coaches and it's just a general question because we do hire individuals to to do after school sports to do other things and how is this different so could you please explain that yes very good point so there's typing positions like I was talking a second ago do not require credential for after-school sport so there is that aspect the contract that's in front of you above and beyond what may be required of a coach for a aesthetic program so as a result we they have been for the years that I understand have been going through the contract consulting contract process professional background yeah specifically with the two consulting contracts that are in front of you they are professional musicians you know they pay a lot of instruments they
do have their expertise what I've been doing on trumpet and another one being on strings particularly guitar Keith Oberman voice and I apologize because the bands are not at the tip of my tongue but have have been in really established famous bands and participating that night I think they might have played an addition there are participation in that there are also currently practicing so on the circuit and doing that kind of thing one of the one of the questions that sometimes gets asked to the board is about consultants and aside from the naval issue that you have to call the person a consultant they're not a contractor they don't own a business and since that's going out and making a product like or doing something like their the through the construction product another question that
comes up is how do you put these people and by law we are required to on which our consultants and [Music] consultants consultants in this issue is only 10% of what it was many many years ago so it's actually very slow district and mrs. Emmerson exactly that is our own and hey guys talent and bring people forward so that it's peer-to-peer well then they can do that I don't have any internal capacity for some of these other positions so that's when you go to a consultant whether it's some of the others you've seen in high school I'm asked to have a consultant to teach them or to work with the staff on developing the master schedule at the secondary think at the middle schools and so there will be specialized on somebody who's got just
the right background and expertise for you to make that beat but other districts and even within this district so is our process for these two to evaluate either their performance or to evaluate the program right so that we can always make so we can make it better sure I mean we can ask me is there okay I mean that was your question right right and also just to be clear I'm not posing the question because I suspect that that they are somehow insufficient I'm just posing the question to consultants in general that when we're bringing people back year after year if they're I mean and these may be great and incredible people doing great incredible work it do we have any kind of data or are we gathering any kind of data to support the
you know that we're bringing them back here up here besides qualitative and performances and feedback from parents and students you know there's nothing formal not is it more anecdotal as opposed it's not in in terms of the the merace program that would be correct actually actually those are very fine indicators based on what you said earlier and that is with the only child that the other ways of measuring success the kind of indicators that we should have for a given area so for example if you talk about musicians you want to know our students involved is there a program going or it's getting the answer to all this is yes so that's qualitative data it's not a program similarly when a high school asked to have somebody come back with a master schedule they say
all the facts that the feedback that they got was this help to get the master schedule done and so it's gonna vary from place to place but it's based on I [Music] think there's value in trying to quantify when you're able to like so for example Mariachi program are there ways to survey so that instead of anecdotal there's we actually have data for the s-pen and I would say especially two pieces that were that we're spending money through the al-kahf like for example on yah-tchi right like we're gonna go through a process evaluating the effectiveness of what we were spending money on right so to the extent that we can document effectiveness I think is I suspect and I suspect that if we were to gather data that the data would support support that's if
I had a you know place to bet that's what I was Beth but but but as we're looking at consultants in the process of consultants that we bring back what what would that look like for us to develop some some means of evaluating those individuals and also I do know I do know that students from our mariachi Lee Azusa have just to see them to give these gentlemen a report card seen that their students have become professional mariachis like mariachi there can we not reality here in Azusa and come with mariachi the rapper go here from Azusa a lot of those there 20 23 years old and they went to a USD and these are the same teachers I mean for me that's like a report card thing they sing beautiful they play their instrument
so I mean visually that's that's kind of how I base this program so yeah right if I could just put a quick plug it's actually now younger than 20 and 21 they're not waiting till they graduate we do have a an official merace that performs for profit that includes current students in the program actually we'd all emotion on the table obviously actually we didn't talk about 11.6 so we're gonna do that we have to do each separately so 11.4 is our motion motion motion by adrian 11.4 i'm sorry so so are we let me just we're only voting on 12.1 what used to be right but i'm but i'm backtracking real quick so um Adrian are you making the recommendation that we moving forward that we do have some type of evaluation some type of
qualitative um data now just yes so I am saying but it may be more due to this specific example where it may be more worthwhile to to hold off on on that example until we get to what would it be twelve point three to use that as a better metaphor to to ask that question so all right so we have a motion in a second no one favorite please vote motion passes 5-0 moving on to 12.2 which used to be eleven point four is there oh sorry 11.5 as our motion I make a motion to approve twelve point to my second okay motion by Yolanda Rodriguez Pena a second by Adrian career any discussion seeing that place you're both please motion passes 5-0 moving on to eleven point six all right right so twelve point
three yeah twelve point three 12.2 twelve point three three okay so just kind of like in the same question what is the evaluation of the consultant for this is Miss muddiest accord oh but on she is what I understand the consultant to that can be liaisons and so what does that process do do we have an evaluation that the three delays once at the end of the year evaluate her services what has she done what projects along the contract has she met and so those are those are the questions that I have for this individual I'd like to invite Norma Camacho up to to talk to you about the work that happens with this there are services for English learners and IANA Center and helps to facilitate monthly professional learning for our community liaisons because
as we've shifted their role which in the past used to be more it was it was not as involved in engaging the parents it was more developing parent volunteers and that type of thing but now we're really building that leadership and engagement of our community and also building the capacity of our Community Liaison so some of the work that she's done has been leading our community liaisons through book studies one of the pieces that they worked on a couple of years ago was beyond the bake sale they work on monthly topics in how to maintain strong family ties how to support strong family resources so every month there's opportunities for professional learning because we are asking our liaisons to leave this kind of work at their sites so we do some of that and also
we do have some feedback forms that the liaisons give to us at the end of the year so I can share some of those pieces and another indicator that I think is really important is really the evolution of our parent engagement here in our district we have been recognized for the work that we've done with our parent engagement and being selected to be part of the PLN with five other districts in the state so well that of that work is is born out of that so I have a question so it kind of sounds like she's doing more of Human Services and she's every month so you're telling me is that every month she comes to the meetings and she leads these community liaisons on book studies monthly topics different how to maintain family resources
so now my question is why are we not utilizing APU you know a graduate students to come in and do something like this as part of their graduate you know Studies interns to be able to do this and lead our community liaisons into our community and reaching out into our community and why we are hiring this consult tonight we do also bring in a lot of our community resources the there's there's actually a two fold so there's a monthly community liaison meeting that includes all of the liaisons will often invite community resources from Parks and Rec will invite our librarian from the Azusa City Library our district nurses will come and speak to them ap you are some of our counseling resources that we've had have come and shared with our community liaisons and also
just internally with lika and Jen so there is a variety of professional learning that occurs at that particular meeting including Socorro so that's one fault and then the other fold is the steering committee the steering committee involves also socorro myself laticia model alcohol and principles and some community liaisons and we dive into some of the work and identifying what are some of the needs that schools are identifying that might be through Al Capp surveys you had a one surveys through just informal surveys the schools are identifying as needing additional support so the steering committee then develops plans and how we are going to move forward and what we will include in some of those professional learning opportunities you know earlier Linda you had said how we're bringing teachers just as Miss as a Zimmer how
within our community who know our community who know our students who know what this community needs therefore I I don't know I I really feel that we probably need to search within our district for a leader in within the community liaisons and someone that knows our community something that's invested in our community somebody that will know our resources and knows our community what they need and you know to be moving forward I mean I would like to have the feedback forms because from my understanding is that I I don't I don't see it I'm out in the community and I am a parent and I don't see that force and so I mean what you're saying sounds great but what I'm seeing is not is not the direct result of this consultant so if you
could please provide the board with the feedback forms how Leticia involved how you know I would just like to understand the process and why we are going to be moving forward to if if the vote is right a fight I mean I would just like to understand the process of why we need an outside person not an inside internal person to be moving this this agenda forward with you know PLC's El Cap and all that and so if we could do that would be great and then there's also the consistency piece because we want to maintain that because another big piece that she has been involved with his families in school and really supporting some of the at work with with earth science as well yes so I guess what I've what's challenging for me
is just like we talked about with mariachi and again I'm so good I can I'm speaking about consultants in general and and mariachis we say that we have anecdotal debt you know data or whatnot to support why we would bring you know them back well well then you have to if that translates here in this context we use anecdotal data and so therefore you're sharing out some of the things that you know that we're doing but if there if there are no data points that we can that we can point to then there can be contrasting anecdote you know stories that come forward that can that could call you know a consultant into question so it would be it would be helpful I agree it would be helpful if there was some sort of debt
or something to point to where where liaisons and and the steering committee and others were able to speak into and speak towards the the effectiveness and I think that that would help me to make a more informed vote and and and on this or or any other consult that we have coming forward I couldn't if I walk everybody are talking with my deities that our survey would be some useful information for me like I think I mean that's helpful just to understand like what the communities I mean they're a response but I think for me and going back to what Adrian's first comment right I think as we think of consultants and if you can't do blanket right but as we hired consultant for specifically for professional development it'd be helpful for us as a
district to understand what are the desired outcomes right and they may be qualitative they may be quantitative right they may be they may just be they may not you may not be able to like directly connect so this happened so this happened right but it's helpful for all of us to have smart goals right so circles for our consultants so that when a time comes and questions come up we have answers around well when we hired her the intention was for our staff because of her background blah blah blah she had this experience she's been able to guide our communities on through this process and we've seen this result because of that so that you so that we have that so that way they have that information I think that's what you're asking to me
I'm not I I am not therefore saying that she must you know that this consultant isn't doing the work I'm just saying it would be great to be able to see the the evidence that we have so that we can make informed votes she's be able to see also you know like her background her or what is their background and specializing in being this consultant you know cuz I know she's been out here several times but you know I don't remember or if it was on here written we would go to us to you I think what we could do you know is as much as we look ahead we can give you background information on the people to do it but also as we move forward in the years as names come forward trying
to structure that for you so and then and then your other point that you made which i think is a valid point right and you think about our original out cup and we actually had in the al cab had a position for that was supposed to be working with the community liaisons right and so so the becomes and I know we've done a lot of work especially with our with our coaches and our toasters I'm not hiring outside consultants and moving towards inside right I think one of the things that Gaby's bringing is bringing up is really in terms of looking at where we go with our community engagement with our community liaisons and leading that work at one point do we develop internal capacity so that someone can lead that versus bringing out a
consultant is it always gonna be consultant because when it with especially with this kind of work you need to have that outside lens to bring that filter I mean those are about questions right but I think that those are the kind of things that that you as a board member want to understand fright and and to my understanding when I was a parent for the El Cap pact plus there was a position open for which was this position and it was opened for a parent that was involved in the committee and I I don't know what happened and it got switched to a consultant I would like to see that back to being a parent a parent that's involved in our community that's invested in our communities so that's my recommendation for this I I
would not like to see a consult I would like to see somebody who is in our community who has been who knows the parents and who's fully invested so and that's the very timely remark because we'll be re looking at our El Cap right so we'll be able to reevaluate some of the decisions we've made over the last few years and think about what our real needs what are the needs of the district and so let me just keep that on your front burner so we have that those conversations so I mean I look at this one in particular I personally would feel uncomfortable voting to move this one forward without without some of those those data points so I mean we could go to vote but it may be worthwhile to table it in
to collect some more information I would agree with Adrienne I I don't feel comfortable voting on this I would like to go ahead and see some feedback on what she has done with our community liaisons and I would like to hear from community liaisons what has she done it at you know at schools and what projects has she finished and you know the last I don't know how many years she guys this board or this district has renewed her contract but I would like to see I would I would like to see her work so I I are two different things I hear you saying you want to have more specifics about the metrics and then I hear you saying that you want to understand what's happened in the past are those those movie one
of the same because I you're saying that they're there there has been some information some data collected from from the steering committee it may or may not fit what would be ideal since we didn't know that ahead of time so since its since it's after the fact whatever is available it would be helpful to have so if it's by way of stories or some sharing in or if there's a quick survey that goes I'm not sure or what what that would look like exactly but if we can have the information in whatever way is possible at this point I think that would be helpful to them bring it back and then moving forward maybe we can structure in a more formal means to not only evaluate this one particular consultant but something to keep on
on you know in mind for other consultants that we bring back year after year okay what when is um we haven't said we're doing it though but what so when is when is she supposed to be working with our community liaisons again and is she currently under contract or this is this she's not currently under contract no she's not I don't know what the okay so this can come back to us because I mean I'd rather have us work collaboratively and have all of us on the same page so so we'll just in these back and then I'm just gonna say as board members right so we're asking for additional information for our consultants which is which is a which is a good thing but I think as the staff sort of works through this
process right and so and we'll expect this for other consultants right I think for us it's really important for you to make sure that you read whatever that is and if it doesn't fit your needs let's let them know in advance so that they can bring the information you need um so that we don't have to push off consultants okay all right so with that we will just not vote on this item we'll skip it and we'll move on to the next item and that yeah yeah that's no because you have to vote to table to then I guess I mean you wanna vote okay okay we could vote the table to the next site the next meeting then is there motion to table this item to the next meeting I make a motion second
okay motion by Adrian Greer a second by Yolanda Rodriguez Pena all in favor aye motion passes 5-0 moving on we have item 3.1 approved memorandum of understanding with is dis Unified School District and the County of Los Angeles now those are consenting thirteen point one or two memorandum of understanding with Azusa Unified School District in the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health this is related to the Wellness Center at Azusa high school as there is there a motion to approve this I motion to approve motion by Jerry Bibles logo second by Gabrielle Ariana's any discussion I would like to say how happy I am that we've gotten both of our high schools and I'm hoping that the Sierra will also be involved in all of this and the the building of our students
is a group because they they have facilities that they want to have student advisories sent to and and have an advisory committee from high schools all over the United all over the San Gabriel Valley or you know I think that is just awesome as far as building our students and also the ability for our students to be taught what good strong relationships are and you know how to handle yourself thank you okay there's been a motion in a second all in favor motion passes five-0 moving on we have item 13 point to ratify approved child 360 quality start Los Angeles grant is their motion I'll make a motion to proof second motion by Jerry Bibles logo second by Adrian career any discussion no that's the next place your votes please motion passes 5-0 moving on
we have item three point thirteen point three ratify approved Sobrato Family Foundation Memorandum of Understanding MOU this is this seal sabado sabado early academic language program okay is there a second okay motion by governor Ariana second by Yolanda Rodriguez Pena any discussion no could you explain this our doodle please so this is an initiative that an opportunity that came across our district in terms of providing professional learning to our preschool teachers we asked and pleaded that we also involve some of our etk teachers and we're able to get some of them to to be observers in the training as well this provides all the professional learning for free we just got good news about two weeks ago something like that that they came across some additional funds to support in classroom material for some of
the curricular units that are being built and we're being trained on so we're very excited and very happy about that maybe I'll talk a little bit about the warehouse and the longfellow warehouse and again we saw pictures of just very excited teachers about the fact that they were getting that this one just about the professional learning inside move but you know you need this broker you need this popular you need to just this Center or whatever that this way is the professional learning along with the material that was needed for the classroom so we're not kind of expending little but I'm not it's good strategies that teachers can use using the program and it's for what I've seen it's very it's an align of what our K to 12 teachers have been um trade in
which is glad and so the still still strategies are with those very same strategies to me so I was excited to see that the our preschool teachers are TK teachers also being trained to use these strategies that we know that have worked i've used these strategies in the classroom myself and students in a classroom where those strategies are used so students are very excited about about the learning it's all about the units and about the academic and you hear a lot more conversations and dialogues and one student so these are just when it really comes down it's just good teaching strategies I think I think she said it all basically that it is about academic oral language and our children have been phenomenal I mean I don't know I wish I could have sent this
to you but last year they would automatically seeing these chants and rhymes that would talk about like the anatomy of an insect or whatever they've learned and they would they would just spontaneously start to sing and share all of the information that they learned through these strategies so they were super excited that the teachers were made to buy what the children could do we have spoken about academic language for a very long time as being our area of focus but I don't think it came to fruition until this until seal came into our PD program and now they see exactly what it's doing for our children and as far as the Longfellow warehouse we were able to use some funding from cspp from our attendance to be able to support all the etk the special
ed TK and preschool and our cspp preschool with all of the materials they need for all four units and they can you talk about the Dual Language focus of the training yeah so it's really incredible that we have a new language focus for our all of our children of course you know we as a district really feel that dual language is important that the home language is honored that our children learn not not only to respect that but also to help children who are English learners to to be able to converse and feel comfortable and share their knowledge in their primary language so it's been really exciting in terms of just oh my gosh just the we we try to promote it as best we can we provide chants and books and rhymes and songs
in mostly Spanish I mean we do have some other languages that we we have supported but usually we support those languages through bringing in the families so the family is um we have family days once a month and if the family is you know Arabic or Vietnamese then they come in and they share something about their family but mostly our Dual Language is in Spanish in English thank you any other questions all right we have a motion in a second place your votes please motion passes five-0 moving on to item 13.4 ratify approved California Department of Education amendment four of the California State preschool program is there motion i motion second motion by Adrian Greer second by Yolanda Rodriguez Pena any discussion just a quick question so voting on this the the this is the
preschool program right the California Department of Education amendment is there for the California State preschool program gonna walk up so they can answer your question oh okay so I would just like to understand where um where this is gonna be taking place where is this because this is this is a sphere it's long it's only witnesses did you explain that for us please when we wrote to receive grant a grant award from the California Department of Education we said our our vision really really high and we wrote a grant to be able to service 96 students per site for our cspp programs and right now we have some really good news in terms of growth but we are not at that at that level and so what this does is that we're saying voluntarily and
temporarily we are we are okay to reduce the amount of funding that the state is providing for our cspp program this year for last year so that's what this is about but just you know just really quickly just as a point of you know something to celebrate this year is the first year beginning our cspp programs like at the beginning of the school year last year when we started to implement we're a little bit you know behind in terms of the calendar but school starts in two days and our our enrollment has skyrocketed we have almost every single section completely full we just decided in cabinet that we were going to grow the programs at two additional school sites by giving them an additional section because not only are they full but they already have
families that have gone through the application process and I've qualified to the application process that are just sitting to to get into a seat and so we're very excited valuable and not only has their dual emotion preschool completely full but that English preschool is also at a very healthy amount of registration so we're very excited about the amount of growth that that we're having in our programs we do try to as we are speaking to community aware we're advertising our program this integration between preschool TK k one two three four and beyond in terms of curriculum in terms of our vision in terms of our initiatives and our in our roadmaps and so a big applause to to Leslie to journey to the staff in preschool because we've seen a tremendous amount of growth even
at one of our schools that a week ago it seemed a very low has more than doubled in one week and so we're very excited about that thank you did we have most of the second already okay place your book place your votes please motion passes five-0 moving on to item 14 points there I'm sorry excuse me thirteen point six approved notice don't 13.5 ratify approved the California state early math initiative is our motion I make a motion for a second motion by Jay Bibles logo second by governor are they honest any discussion seeing none place your votes please motion passes 5-0 moving on we have item 13.6 approved notice of completion for the Los Angeles engineering for Los Angeles engineering for Azusa high school and Center middle school a da fencing and landscaping provements
and storm drainage improvements at Azusa High School is there a motion I make a motion second motion by Adrienne career second by Yolanda Rodriguez Pena any discussion place your votes please and it my motion passes 5-0 I'm moving on to item 13.7 action of fixed assets food services equipment is their motion and make a motion to approve fifteen point seven yes motion by Yolanda Rodriguez Pena second by Adrian Greer any discussion yes I have a few questions regarding who do you sell the auction items to and where does the money go that's collected from now in June so we we work with an auctioning house and so they pick up all the items that were auctioning and they go through an auction process just like you may see on TV and they charge a percentage
for holding the auction and they gave a they give us the remainder so what's different and I can get that back to you and I'm right it is not very high yeah single digit number and then we get the money back to goes back to food service depending on where it comes from so for in this case it would go back to food services okay thank you all right any other questions place you're both please
