oh she's she's a part of was a high school when you think about all the the CIF championships that she coached a softball team in 1984 CIF when you think about the mentoring and and the guidance of Lisette Salas she's always Ricky recognized recognizing and remembering all the hard work that Miss Goering has done and so anytime you go into the the Hall of Fame space anytime you go into the gym of Azusa just know that there's no one that loves that space more than Miss caring and so just super excited super proud to be here to recognize Miss Gary and the person that has allowed her to put in all that the extra hours and all the extra work for our astok Scholars mr. Gary who's also an aspect or I saw a gnostic
teacher but having said all that the boring stuff is around because it's it's it was only a matter of time so yeah until she was recognized for this prestigious award but the CSA da the California State Directors Association aren't mrs. sandy Goering at the first 51st annual state athletic directors conference in San Diego on April 6th sandy received the su camión award one of the most prestigious awards a California athletic director can receive sandy is very active within the state serving on the Foothill citrus at the Rec Directors Association CES ad a CAF southern section and the CIF state state boards sandy recently earned her certified athletic administrators title CAA and this data represents her continued growth and high level of competency accomplished through continuing education and passing a very difficult CAE exam sandy brings
a great deal notoriety to her school district area and section through her service and accomplishments and again everything that you see in the gym and the Hall of Fame has something if not everything to do with with Miss gearing in our hard work so let's give it up for Miss Danny Gary so have here Sandy gearing for receiving the prestigious Tsukiyama award because of her outstanding leadership and contribution as a California athletic director all right moving on congratulations sandy moving on we have item 5.3 employee recognition the cube award and I'll introduce the cube award from from the dice and explain what the history of the cube award is the loser program that was started in a 1990 school year and over the years has recognized over 200 employees and it's one of the rare
employee recognitions that we have in Asuza where all the labor groups bargaining union leaders as far as management come together to select outstanding employees throughout the district for their service to not just Asuza in the community but their service to one another and so they're recognized and nominated by amongst and each other and then we have a group of employees and management folks who come together and actually select our winners so at this time I'd like to call Meghna Nasser the director of physical services to present she's truly deserving the outstanding employee award Anna has made significant contributions she came with 24 years of experience in accounting before coming to Azusa I have worked with her since then she's very hardworking friendly and always professional at all the time and she has a smile on
her face ni is very knowledgeable in her duties and provided training to several employees in the department and she works very closely with other departments and purchasing department she is thorough and often seen explaining procedures and greevey processes with the school site for so long she has such an amazing attitude and welcomes any new employee in the department with kindness and respect her peers thinks very highly of her and says she is walking encyclopedia for France ba ba she is knowledgeable friendly caring and respectful she is truly an asset to the district she's she's not only amazing employee but also she's amazing in her personal life she has a lovely family her husband she has two sons and a daughter-in-law and she loves children really very much and especially little girls so unfortunately I don't

surveen Veronica might look a little familiar to you because she was just honored last week at the Teacher of the Year ceremony so this is this is her year although every year is her year because she is amazing every single year and lastly last week I talked about how much effort she gives to make our school a better place she improves our school climate she improves all the events that we have so today I get another chance to share something else and that is about her teaching veronica is a kindergarten teacher and kindergarten is so hard I just can't tell you how hard it is I am so grateful for her every year at the beginning of the school year because those little ones don't always come in ready or willing to go into the
classroom and so and we've even gotten some in years mid-year students who aren't so ready or willing to come into the classroom and Veronica makes such a happy wonderful place for kids now this is her daughter Sophia by the way she's a mother of two and her daughters in kindergarten so and like I said the students can be very challenging at times and this year has been a particularly challenging year for students in her classroom not only with behaviors but turnover and other a myriad of other issues and as you can see from the smile on her face the beautiful smile on her face that she always keeps a positive attitude she works so hard I mean nobody works harder than Veronica she is absolutely dedicated and the kids want to be in her classroom
it doesn't take very long for students to be willing to stay in her classroom because of the wonderful learning that happens in there because of the joy that she brings to them to the students to the families and the funny thing about Veronica too is that she makes such a wonderful environment that her pair don't leave so she has parents volunteering in her class 1 right now as a fifth grade student and that she's been volunteering ever since so I'm just so grateful and pleased to honor her twice this month for all the wonderful work that mr. bean does her mother is here in the back if you went away her very proud mother and she should be very very very proud of Veronica so congratulations Veronica and Sophia thank you hello there you know
your mom's getting a really really big prestigious award it's in here can you see it yeah can you help for taking care of it okay can I hand it to you okay okay Veronica I didn't get a chance to just last week to in you know congratulate you individually but I know you've been in kindergarten for a while now and it does take a special person to speak right it does take a special person to be a teacher in kindergarten you have 25 rambunctious kids running around and the patience that you need and the creativity and everything that comes along with that and just being them but you're like a mother to 25 kids along with yours at home but I just want to thank you for being an outstanding employee in our district and
for continuing each year to just be the best that you can be and more thank you [Applause] [Music] [Applause] congratulations to all our awardees it's always great to recognize all the great work happening in this district so we'll move on now to a section sec 6.1 and this is um comments public comment from the floor from the from the public we have three cards everyone wishing to address the board gets three minutes so we'll start with the first one and that is Laura Clark who asked you to come back up again um you want to speak on item 11.15 donation oh do you want to postpone it it are they coming tonight or not you don't know okay we'll just hold on okay all right next we have item ten point oh sorry we have
we have Jorge dole solace speaking on item ten point two good evening hand poor audience citizens of Azusa you know I've been involved with district matters for probably the last 10 to 12 years and nothing is more aggravating than to have a taxpayer a resident ignored and I mean the word ignored recently I raised that is because on January 28 I submitted comments and questions at a citizens Oversight Committee meeting and then get a response didn't even get an acknowledgment from staff so on March 25th of this year at another citizens Oversight Committee meeting I took the time to put all my questions and concerns in writing expecting a response which was the direction given by the citizens Oversight Committee to the superintendent and to the assistant superintendent business once again not even a call
not even the knowledge meant whatsoever so yesterday citizens Oversight Committee had another meeting and I went in and I submitted three pages of comments and questions regarding the information being provided to the citizens Oversight Committee which contain at least 40 errors at least 40 years and I went back and I looked at my January 28th meeting notes and it talks about a project being completed completed project that's what the information was presented by staff to the citizens Oversight Committee completed January 28 HVAC which is air conditioning and roofing at Lee at 1.8 million dollars in that yesterday's meeting that same item appears as work in progress for the sum of three million forty five thousand and nine hundred dollars is it continue or not I mean how can you trust information being provided by staff
to the citizens Oversight Committee in the public same thing with kitchen upgrades faced one too sloppy completed January 28th that's what was presented okay 1.2 million dollars yesterday's meeting work in progress please wrap up your Center one point six million dollars thank you so that's your ninety two million dollars citizens being spent without proper thank you next we have one more person Brody O'Brien speaking on the art gallery steam board dr. Kaminsky gentlemen our teachers have come tonight to supplicate you for funds sustainable funds for the Art Gallery two years ago we approached Dana Mitchell to start a fine arts PLC group and the district gave us permission to do this and in that first year we secured a location next to my room and the district with with our help transform that spot into
a Art Gallery and we had one art show and then that art show we spent about a thousand dollars to put that art show on us of our own money this year in our second year as the fine arts PLC we put three art shows on and I haven't I don't have a running total from everyone right now but I can tell you for myself just for this art show I'll I will be spending about three hundred and seventy dollars and I already spent close to that on the february show the red show we are dedicated teachers we want to see what's best for our students we are going to continue to grow this program and do what's best for the students of Azusa but we would like for the Board of Education and the
leadership and Azusa to think about a sustainable fund that is beyond the current funding we're getting from either our site or our L cap funding which is wonderful there's been a it's been a great increase and it's been helpful but it's not enough we're asking for next year for twenty five hundred dollars to put on the art shows that we have planned right now we are looking to do between four and six art shows in the art gallery next year this process isn't just a celebration of students art it is an amazing authentic experience for our students to have real-world experience in participating in an art show that can go on their resume that can lead to college and other art shows for them and so we're asking that you support us in making that
authentic experience [Music] thank you for your time in your consideration thank you so we want on the agenda we have item 7.1 comments and requests by the for Adrienne yeah first I want to congratulate our colleague Gabby for your amazing achievement this past weekend in graduating with your masters and social work itself just want you to know that your whole community yeah your whole community and all of us we're proud of you thank you for all you do also I was able to go over to the college signing so as usual high school had a had a rally that I was able to attend and it was incredible the way that they had a balloon arc and they had students kind of coming in in the different sections whether it's students that were going into
community college or into the UCS or into the CSU's and millets and I was just blown away by the numbers of students that were rushing through the you know those different segments so again incredible incredible work going on there at Azusa and throughout our district and also I went right from there to Gladstone High School where where again students were honored and all the teachers that were lined up during lunch to put color-coordinated beads and kind of celebrate and just just champion our students for their achievements as well so again just just great job to our students and also to our teachers and administrators and staff for I'm celebrating that work and then also this last weekend was able to join are a few folks here from the district to go over the USC because
we as we can see over here on the wall three of our schools were honored as top schools within the county I'm leading the way for educational equity across the county and so paramount Lee and Austin Ellington were honored and so again just just great work to see the amazing things going on in the district so much to celebrate great Yolanda okay good evening everyone I just want to wish all the teachers happy appreciation week but as far as I'm concerned it should be like everyday I don't know why they all have this you know when we free classified one week for teachers when you know why can't I just think all the time you know so I want to wish you happy teachers appreciation year and I went up to Magnolia Elementary School on
Earth Day they had an Earth Day assembly so mayor Rocha and I and Roy Chavez from the Park and Recreation he's a superintendent of the parks and recreation we spoke to students the importance of water conservation and about using their plastic bags and styrofoam you know cups in place that they do not so I had to go home and throw mines away because you know my kids are saying practice what you preach so and I also want to thank the principal Marcela Fonseca and let Noli community they donated a beautiful magnolia tree to the city but mr. Chavez said he's gonna plant it right in front of magnolias school they already have a spot for it I also went to the Azusa adult International Day and the Adult School students and staff had performances with
dancing and singing in their culture they had this young lady she was singing in Vietnamese it's really really nice with a really beautiful outfit and we had the singing in Spanish and dancing folk dances so I go there every year and it's a lot of fun did the students come out and I know they have a great time I went to Sousa high school and the gladstone JROTC change of command and pass in review ceremony all the young and young men and women ladies they look really nice in the uniforms they did a perfect job I'm not sure how long it takes into practice but it was just so perfect them changing of the colors and it's kind of a touching ceremony because when you see these kids some someone you know that there are
seniors and every time I know that they're seniors are kind of you know like oh mine they're leaving so I want to thank senior army instructor First Sergeant Marvin Herbert from watson high school an army instructor sergeant first class Henry Gennaro's when mezuzah high school I went to Paramount elementary school and they had the mother-daughter dance it was so cute you see the little boys dancing with their moms you know I think that's a great memory for them she said it was really beautiful right mr. Fernandez so it was nice I went to Center middle school and they had a 300 basketball tournament during their lunch time and the students um they played with the process the elimination and we was left as two girls and two boys so they had a great game the
kids are rooting for both and as you know there's a winner or loser but you know what they only want like one point and it was really a lot of fun thank you first of all thank you everyone that came to our meeting times a full house yeah we're talking to people at first I I do want to recognize the t-shirt teacher appreciation week without teachers we you know we just don't learn so each one of you guys is truly appreciated I appreciate you and I like I think I I concur with my colleague here that every every day should be Teacher Appreciation Week day so congratulations um I do want to let you guys know that actually today Foothill middle school is having a Beauty and the Beast that's happening right now from 7:00
to 8:00 which we missed so we can catch tomorrow if you guys are available I will be there it's like believe five dollars a person they're fundraising and I believe it's mr. Adam I was putting that together and he's put a lot of work into that I want to go ahead and share with you guys that today I had a chance to go to the Southern California cement Mason training facility and I was able to get some information for to share with our Adult School and and for our students who would be graduating i I want to go ahead and thank Terry Perdomo and they left and Brodie and all the art teachers for putting the time and energy that they do to their students it's it's extra what they do and I'm sure a
lot of the teachers they you guys know put a lot of their time and their money into it and I just want to thank you guys teachers and the art teachers for just putting in that time these students will will will be so much better just because of you we have somebody in the crowd today and it's her birthday and she decided to be here today said I want to wish Melissa ramnik a happy birthday and I am happy to announce that this last Saturday I am an official MSW Masters in Social Work and I was hooded last week Wednesday and Saturday I was able to walk and receive my degree so alright I'll be brief congratulations Gabi we're all very proud of you um and I echo what my colleague said about about Teacher
Appreciation Day I think the bedrock of our of our schools is our the teachers in the classrooms so you cannot thank them and we can't thank them enough for what they do I do want to move just finish off on a very honest ombré a little somber note I mean that is well kind of so on the aijalon announced on May 22nd there's gonna be a very large rally up at the State Capitol CTA is participating aft participating the School Board Association is participating and we're all going to be up there demanding full and fair funding because we live in a state where we're the fifth largest economy in the world and we're 41st in funding and so when we look at our budget and over the couple meetings we're going to be looking at
our budget right and we're gonna having hard conversations about how do we serve the students that we need to serve at the level that we want to serve them in with the bunny that we're getting from the state and it's not fair to any of you it's not fair to our students and so we will be joining up there with with all of the other colleagues across the state demanding that the state address this issue because that's where our funding comes from and so I want us to keep our eye on up there because ultimately we make local choices here but it's all driven by this box that the state puts us in right and so I hope I hope we'll see you're the union presidents up there with us and other representatives of up
there with us or I think there actually might be some local rallies as well demanding with the state provide us with the funding that we need to have so that we can pay our teachers fairly so that we can provide the services that we want for our students that the level of service that we want for our students um so with that we'll go on to the rest of our board meeting and we'll move on to comments and reports by student or member could not attend today so we'll move on to our cabinet just wanted to you know Anna has already left in her family but she's part of our fiscal team and just in the short time that I've been here it's been an honor to work with her and see her continued contribution
to the district and to the fiscal team she's kind of been our go-to person to bring in all of the new folks into the department and kind of show him the ropes so very appreciative of her and her contribution thank you I recently the Board of Education made that very difficult decision of moving towards closing schools and our work with our bargaining units really took hold as we started to negotiate the effects of those those closures and there was a bit of a culmination that took place on Friday we're in able to execute the effects of those closures and I have to say that I I continue to be just awed and honored by our teachers because throughout the very difficult process they really were outstanding professionals very classy knowing that the many of them
were moving from schools that they've been at for many many years and where many friendships and celebrations have been shared and moving on to new and different schools and as we all know that change can be difficult and I have to say that our teachers were absolutely amazing and it really did take a team effort on the part of the district and also our bargaining unit leaders as well so I like to express my sincere deep appreciation for everyone involved thank you very much thank you thank you good evening I just want to take the time to thank in public our parent advisory committee that oversees our El Cap process we had a full day a couple of Fridays ago where we went through some proposed changes for the out cap I do see some
of the members in the audience so thank you for being here tonight and I just want to again just say that how how proud I am about the the manner in which the Inquirer they ask questions they collaborate they they see each other they bounce off of each other and tonight we're going to be sharing with you some recommendations that came out of that of that meeting but I just wanted to publicly thank all the committee members thank Jennifer O'Brien for her work with the PAC Plus this year as well thank you good evening and again I like the others I want to first off thank and congratulate our teachers for the work that they do day in and day out and earlier somebody who had mentioned but Kim like having 25 children can you
imagine and yet the magic the teachers do whether it's with the littlest kids or the oldest ones is amazing and really does change lives and so thank you for what you're doing I'm also want to congratulate as Adrienne Greer did are that big sign over there this is going to be in front of Paramount Lee and Ellington top schools in LA County this is a brand-new award that USC put together and that ward signifies they're in the top 15 percent of schools that serve here in LA County over a million students I think that's really really pretty high so let's go around to applause and let's see here I see I see Antonio here alexis is here and let's see who else hey come on come on up Anna all of you come up I
want you to have a chance to be seen by the group here okay teachers come come come yes everybody come up Lika if I can ask you take one picture here with the board in background but then take a picture over there by the banner please Adrian why did you go with them since you went to the wait wait wait hold on all right Rick could take it over there with you in front of the other vision since he trekked out to us seat ahead to be with you guys on Saturday well you should know Alexis that she went there [Laughter] and thank you to all the staff that made that happen for the students and and you know for the honor of your school is really really incredible the other thing I wanted to
congratulate people on and share the good news we just heard today that glass in high school they have their WASC review earlier in the year and they got the highest accreditation rating which is a six-year rating and we're very very proud of them so congratulations that's in high school thank you very much all right thank you before moving on to closed session - I just wanted to add one thing so I misspoke earlier when I talked about we want to make sure all our teachers are paid why we want to make sure all of our employees are paid well right I think I think I had Teacher of the Year on the mind so our chief Sofia's all of our employees all right so next moving on report of closed session I it matters no
nothing to report there there was no action taken so move on to Jen item 10 section 10 general functions we have item 10.1 student board member role and before I turn this over to Adrienne I just wanted to let the board know I asked this to be an agenda item because I know we talked he talked about it briefly during public comment but I think we want to get our processes in order and so that means if we're gonna send a board member off to do some work for the board we want to make sure we discuss it and give them directions so I asked them to put the two puts on the agenda and I asked Adrienne to drop a brief proposal of what he's envisioning in terms of how do we engage the
students to create authentic engagement and so I'm turning it over to you Adrienne thank you talk about this thank you so so yeah I have this there's a little note here that I dropped off for review but but in essence and to reiterate some of what would have communicated in the past I think that we have we have really do have a tremendous opportunity to engage our students in in different ways than we have with the student board roll up till now I think it's great that we have representation that we have students that are that are here across the different schools but I think that again there's a room to to actually have dialogue and create channels for for students to directly communicate to us and so I've laid out some some things for
us to consider so one would be for for us to define our purpose you know why do we have students what the reason that we would want to even have this to have students here just so that we're on the same page about that and then also refine the process and the structure of that role and so purposes that I have that I you know suggesting one that we're providing the school board with student perspectives and insight to be best positioned to make informed decisions at the Dyess to to provide clear channels for students to communicate matters of importance to the school board on a regular and ongoing basis so that it doesn't just happen when there's an issue or when when a challenge arises or or just when we're celebrating but that there's there
are regular points of communication and also of course providing opportunities for students to gain leadership abilities as representatives of their peers across the district and so some of the structure that I'd really like us to consider is one develop a consistent process and criteria for our student board members to be selected and identified as a student board rep and then also reshaping that role a little bit to be so that again it can students recognize what their role is as a representative and that there are channels created and promoted for students to be able to communicate any important matters up to them and over to us at the board level and so I've already sat down and talked with Linda a bit about this and but I want to make sure that I'm doing as
I'm wanting to take next steps I want to do so with a pointment and blessing of the board and so I'm asking to be considered to take some necks some further steps and be appointed by the board to do so so can you clear so you have some pretty some pretty detailed suggestions for the process instructor so have you this is has this come out of discussions with the students or where's it where's this coming from some of it yeah so a lot of a lot of this came out of a student that sent me an email earlier in the year just about some wanting to connect and so I went and sat down with her and some of her her peers and realized as she's communicating some of the things that she's communicating these
are great things and and maybe it's an extra special situation that I'm that that a board member is coming and sitting down to meet with them and talk to him about some of these things but how do we make that not extra-special how do we make that regular thing where there's regular communication so that came out of some of those initial conversations that I've had with those students so moving for I mean do you want to just turn this into update our policy to reflect this or is there a process you want to go through with to sort of finalize these recommendations no I'd like to I'd like it to take some next step before coming back with with the recommendation which would include me continuing to go and meet with with students further around
around this work and shaping what it would look like all right so you're gonna meet with students at like the board members or the school sites what do you at the school sites I think I want to start with some of the students that that where this idea was birthed from I want to honor them and honor some of their suggestions and so starting some conversations with them but even you know talking how do we include leadership classes and also expertise of teachers or and/or staff that that already at the school sites also understanding what has the process been up till now that's something that I've asked and I don't know that we have a clear process at every school so there has to be some investigation to know where we are in order to
take steps next steps on on what it could look like melanda so I'm reading right here where he said coach school remembers on how do you make more comments providing insights well I do know they do they have a CSV workshop right and what did they learn there it's just what they learn when they go to sort shop yeah I wonder knew so we currently so we currently send them to the Council of the California Association of school councils training which is an is in September CSPA also has a student board member day at the CSP conference and we've never sent anybody to that oh this you know I've never really accepted it so um but I'm not sure I who's gone with who Scott we've always had somebody with their my counselor so maybe
you can even find out what they learn at that training yeah and whether it's my compare that to the CSB a training as well to see which one it would be more valuable and even even speaking on that like what I mean as far as coaching I'm grateful that we you know we have our students that read us you know different events that are happening during their their board comment time but again I think there's a room during that time for them to really use that as an opportunity to share out valuable information and valuable comments for us as a board so you're not you're not you're not talking about coaching what they say but about building leader capacity exactly right okay so I think I think he's just looking for a direction for us
from us to say yes go do this Adrian so well yeah it sounds great I think it's good I think this is a great great beginning to be able to build a partnership with the students and building their their leadership skills and using that time for not just reading off dates and events that are happening and as our our crowd kind of dozed off for a little bit no offense to school board member role but at the same time if there's issues going on or there's a dialogue that needs to be addressed I think this would be a great time to for them to address it so you can find out excuse me how are they selected yeah I mean are they only need to be ASV or they're just any student they want to
participate I think you know I don't think we know that how they're selected because usually I notice it's like the school president the president of the school you know I like to get the opportunity to any any child that wants to participate maybe through an application absolutely yeah right process that's yeah well there are some boards that interview and choose and we've left that towards the sites but but I with this there's we can discuss the different options out there right if you just in detail just how did the rotations gonna work just so we all have a clear understanding so I'll give you say because what I what I envision so right now the way that it works is as I understand it we have school board members that from each of the sites
that take a third of the year but they're only assigned for that role just for that one third of the year my suggestion and and what I want to kind of sit down and look at is if the role was for an entire year but there was throughout throughout the third of the year one of them was designated to actually sit down with us but they're still having time to meet and connect and make sure that information is being shared up they meet so that that way they're communicating up so there's there is always representation and some of communicating matters that may happen at Azusa high store or other other places from that perspective even if we have a student that's from ceará high school that's currently sitting at our at the dice from what
I recall when we did have when I first came in there was a student at stat here the whole year and they were either juniors or seniors and you know they had sports or at the end they wouldn't come you know either they have to do homework or they were senior their graduate so I think that's when we changed it if I'm correct to the 3rd because we did they used to come and then they didn't come and they wanted to do other things so my recommendation was have a hybrid of the two yeah that would be good and I think so in terms of timeline are you think woody I mean what's more ascending so yeah so my hope would be able to have some conversations do some work now so that starting in
this the upcoming school year we can be able to launch with the new model okay all right all right Thank You Adrian all right and that wasn't an action item so we'll move on to the next item to the citizens Oversight Committee annual report I'd like to invite mrs. Meir Rico up to the board she's a member of the citizens oversight committee and that committee has been in place since the passage of the 2014 bond it's a requirement of the bond that we have a Citizens Committee that watches to see in particular very happy to received it I'm happy to inform that it states that as a unified is meeting all legal guidelines we are very excited about the near future projects most of the past projects had to focus on replacing crucial underground facilities
on heating ventilation and air conditioning systems they also focused on fencing that not only made our schools have nicer curb appeal would also make them safer for our students the next set of projects we will actually be able to see for example the Asuza class don't hide marquees and the track and field of construction and cold high schools we will also see more fencing and modernization being completed at other schools I have learned that the process to modernize and beautify our space is all along and that there is a lot of work involved as a parent I am very grateful that our wonderful school district gives us the opportunity to be involved at every level and that it is preparing our children for successful futures I spend a lot of time at the schools and
at meetings with a lot of you and I know that you have the best interests at heart for our kids I know that the children of our community and that my children and in great hands as a committee we are very grateful to dr. Kaminsky and mr. mark Bommarito for the informational presentations for putting together the reports for our meetings and for answering all of our questions thank you very much thank you very much all right and that was just an information item as well unless anybody has questions for facility call okay we are moving on to item ten point three we have the capital facilities program update there's a PowerPoint bring it up please so each year we try to bring updates to you throughout the year particularly in spring as we approach the
summer work thank you at the end of the summer or early fall as we recap what's been accomplished during the summer and then what is going on during the winter the first couple years of the bond project most of the work happened in summer and that where there were things like underground utilities roofing projects that really cannot be done when students are are here in our classes as we've completed those projects and move forward we're beginning we're getting closer and closer to the stage where we actually start working on classrooms and that is something that we can do during the school year as well as some fencing that we can do and some outdoor projects so we're going to talk a little bit about what what things we've been working on what's in progress and
where we see possibilities for the future so if we can go to the next slide and I guess I can do that these are projects and estimated costs these are in progress so it was mentioned just a little while ago that we're getting closer and closer to actually getting the marquees updated for the two glass and analysis of high school Dianna Rojas is still here she probably remembers the roofing project and air conditioning and fire alarm and that's an example of the fire alarm was something that typically we would have done a later in the cycle but when we take these projects want to prepare them where you are required to get state approval and the state in their wisdom and that project decided they wanted us to do fire alarms early on so we
had to modify the project a little bit which um sometimes changes the cost as it did in this one we worked on Slauson kitchen you Rebecca Hall if you've been here for a while a couple summers ago we redid much of the kitchen we had planned three phases and we've completed two of them first and second this summer or rather the stamp this summer Antonia will be very busy there will be underground utilities going on at his school that's a major project with trenching large trenches and then smaller ones in between classrooms and dirt everywhere dirt piled up every place we're also planning on starting pretty soon some additional fencing field fencing is what we call it it's the the back part of the field and our dalton Magnolia and Slauson and we've been designing
and are getting closer to updating the section of the fields over Susan high school and Gladstone this will this will give them a artificial turf field that can be used either as football or soccer as well as a track around it and the track is a little bit wider than what they've had I think it's an eight-lane track rather than a six-lane track so that'll give them some more options before they have competitions if there are other projects looking at fire alarms at a number of sites and looking at the lis portables to upgrade those as we move forward i'm saucin the element of the classroom modernization plan has been in design as well as I'm improving the technology there the lis underground replacement that some of these are still a ways off they're not
yet quite ready and then eventually the Center modernization and you can say I'm sorry but at the bottom of that that slide there is a subtotal right now for projects that are into the design phase we're designing them or they're bidding or they are already in construction that's the forty five million dollars and as you recall that bond was a ninety two million dollar bond so that's about half of the work right there off of the bond the next slide shows some projects that we anticipate we'll be able to work on in the future and so looking at Downton clashing organization the lead cross modernization paramount and then upgrading middle schools in terms of their data capabilities the fans that we are using are come from two sources the first one is what's called geo
bond that means general obligation bond that's the measure cable that was passed by the voters for 92 million and the state in passed a statewide initiative to match funding now they don't pay it's not a dollar two dollar match it's about it about a 25% match so that we have been actually working on completing all the the documentation that we need to be eligible to receive funds so we expect they will receive up to twenty four million which will extend what we can do so right now we've spent about 32 million on projects that are complete another 45 all the ones that are in progress on stage of the progress we've got another nineteen point six projects and then right now for right now a total of 97 and you might say well how are
we gonna do that out of that 92 million well five million of it would come out of that 24 million that we expect us to get from the state so we're very grateful that the voters of the state passed that some other projects that have come up under discussion that we have not yet decided exactly which ones we're going to do and in which which order we're gonna do them one possibility is Adult Ed with their move expanding the parking lot for them looking at the two high schools to reconstruct their pools looking at the two high school gyms for modernizing them we have the old schoolhouse at Lawson middle school and the fencing projects have actually been doing in phases so the first phase as I was just talking a little bit about it
is what's called field fencing that's the perimeter along the backside of the school the sides in the back the second phase is the front side of the school that's the steel more decorative fencing the third phase was having some more schools for the field fencing in the face is going into schools particularly some of the large amount of high schools and doing about the interior fencing and getting that up to speed to a couple other needs that people have forgot to identify is looking at the locker rooms it's Lawson and Center in particular looking at film rooms at the two high schools the auto mechanic rooms and trying to use the construction plans that we have to really to be to come home with the instructional programs that we want to put a place for
our students and then the decent work to continue to work to improve the drainage in Azusa high school so thinking about timeline so the plan right now is just to start fencing sometime later this spring and that's that this is probably a longer project that will go on into the fall I won't be completed completely in summertime and the next slide just shows a picture of a current fence as well as a rendition of what the fence would look like and let's see is Laura still here no Clark no ok so this is Dalton elementary school and you can see our older fences are quite dilapidated but we were putting in better quality better grade fences with security features they're higher and the openings are much smaller they're half the size that makes them they're
more difficult to climb they're more difficult to cut through and so they write a greater level of protection next is a sample of the decorative fencing that comes typically in the front of the school and then some projects we hope to get started this summer one is the underground utilities at Paramount and then they're working on the two marquees now you'll see that a shifts down at the bottom down page all of these projects are always dependent on what happens in DSA which is division of state architect we are architects design the projects we are required to submit them to the division of state architect for approval and that typically takes quite a few months in six months is pretty average so sometimes the people get a little frustrated why is the project started when
we thought it was it's because it's still in DSA we're waiting for the final approval if they're looking at it and saying gee you know I think you need some other changes or you want you to go back and redesign this those are all things that we need to do another project this is an example of the underground utilities that this happens to be Center but a paramount will look somewhat similar and this is drawing a rendition of the two marques the is a high school marquee will be near the front entrance of the school on Cerritos the gladstone one will be on the corner of Enid and arrow the is that the lettering that's just about that that's a good question that's just a sample actually these are digital boards you can actually have
photographs of students or staff members they're very the eye changes all the time you can have it rotating through something yeah think of some of those things you see on the freeway those changing yeah that's what it's like yeah the high one is it gonna be right directly where it is behind that bowl necessarily no and one nice thing is actually they will be on you say one side of it there'll be on both sides so the people for example Gladstone people will be able to read it whether they're coming from the east or the west they'll there'll be a it'll be two sided so that's nice they're projects that will start a little bit later info to winter are looking at the parking lot for adult education that's a sample there if I was
spraying so these are projects that would take a little bit longer the track let's get started and track it'll take most of the year and I have to think sandy carrying was here a little while ago thank her and also I'm Chuck Shore because there was a lot of work there was TT athletic directors at the school's working with the coaches for the different sports to determine what should be done and and making the necessary adjustments in terms of the classes and what part of the field they would use and they all actually to a person agreed yes please do it during a school you don't wait for another summer try and get it going with me they said you know they'll adjust so they're very excited about it and here's an example of what
as a high school field looks like right now and see if I don't hear is the football field this is Cerritos and this is baseline right here this football field is going to be slid a little bit over a little bit closer for two reasons one it's closer access for a DA access but also then the shop that goes over here so you know if by any chance shot put ball goes off the wrong way it's just going to go too you know won't go here we're people I'll go through the fence so based on we'll still be right here and then this will slide over a little bit and a Gladstone their their location is right here they didn't really need to move it there just slide it down just a little bit to
make sure that we leave space for future bleachers for portable bleachers that most schools what they're doing that [Music] Slauson modernization we are we were planning to start it in summer we don't know for sure it has not come back out of DSA so this may not quite started beginning a summer like we were hoping we'll be watching to see what TSA says and if they require us to do any extra work or or gonna rethink what we're doing will adjust to that and so just to clarify for all these where we see this asterisk and it says depending upon DSA we have already submitted everything that we can do on our end and it is in these instances the ball is completely in their court and we're waiting here back that's correct now some
of them have not yet been submitted because of timing but they all have to be you know and we have to wait for a DA's approval before we can move forward and this is an example of how you can do a school modernization during the school year what the colors show is a phasing what could be phase 1 2 3 so for example in this in this particular plan this kind of from tan color right here that in our initial plan is phase one which is summertime so it's summertime you can do the front entrance to the school you could redo this faculty parking a lot on the side you could do the basically the quad area they have some restroom upgrade this won't happen if this is the old schoolhouse and that's to be
determined what happens there but this is the entrance to from the south side of the school and two classrooms that are there themselves now if DSA approval comes a little bit late we won't be able to do all of this and summer time so they would end up doing make a decision about what's essential to do this summer and what can wait till another summer so these is this initial idea but it's flexible depending on how the timing is once we finish this some production of this week then when the school starts start with these pink buildings these classrooms here would be phase one and what happens during phase one is that whoever's in these classrooms have to move out of their classrooms into some empty classrooms so each school that's going to go on
their modernization has to identify where some classes so this this happens to be one here another one there and I believe they have five they say if five rooms are gonna get modernized at a time and then five places where people can rotate through after those rooms are done they come back and another five another color goes and that's how you rotate through so when you're under modernization you always have to keep some rooms empty to Lao teachers to have a place to move while their rooms are being renovated and that's how they do it during the school year otherwise you would be taking all too little multiple summers to do that so it's a very speed you know so any questions about those one of the things that that mark mentioned to you early
and I just wanted to share this and just to reinforce it is that the world's my construction change from time to time and continue to change and as you know if you Navy but if anybody has lived in a house for a long time and you want to remodel it the rules for remodeling and the roots for rules for getting your house is what's called up to code have changed over the years the same thing for us in education too and so sometimes when we go to GSA they will say you know what we know you said you're going to do this part here but we also want you to do something else that was some code that got changed over the years and those are things that we have to adjust to and that
will impact the timing of what we're able to do any questions in terms of starting the summer when when do we anticipate that construction will start well right now we anticipate that the underground utilities will start hopefully the day after school gets out that is what we try to do the fencing I'm not sure on the exact start time of that mark do you are you feeling aware that I don't have it okay but it would be around kind of the same time the fencing fencing can be done during the screen but it's much more efficient easier to do it during summertime so awesome though has not come out of TSA yet so we're not we have to wait and see when that when that will start okay so for the board I'm Adrian you
and Gabi you're new generally we have a board meeting like a study session tour of the facilities during the summer so I just wanted to get a sense from the board tonight so we could start planning out from the summer when that would be the best time for us to have that meeting so I know last year we had it in early August had it before in July you know when Gabby comes actually can weigh in too but in terms of like you guys have schedule constraints I have some in August so July with end of July and July would be better for both of you so many things I believe he said inquiry about July 30th that's a Tuesday though the last Tuesday in July that works okay maybe well we can do calendar
I just wanted to get a sense for people so late leaders late July later July is better ok so there's three of us that later July is better so we can ask Abby to distance just to make sure I'm Jerry and then and that would be that would be a morning meeting say nine to 11:30 I was to avoid some of the heat because we you will wear closed-toe shoes you'll be wearing you know jeans and you know hat foot to protect yourself on the Sun and be ready to climb over mounds of dirt and walk on boards that are stretched out over trenches things like that all right so and then and then Linda just in the past that it really had been focused just on the tour but I but I know because
we have we really haven't had a chance to sit down with with our two new board members and just comprehensively go over where this whole projects been um so I would like us to have a more extensive meeting that day to be able to do that at that point I think looking at our our schedule the next month and a half I'd rather not do it during this whole budget time and then just so you know we're talking about maybe doing it next you would hold off and do that in July well no I think we need to have some kind of discussion study session but I think the comprehensive overview okay works better there thank you okay all right um so we'll move on unless are there any other questions no okay so we'll
move on to the El Cap proposed modifications to El Camino board president board members superintendent cabinet community we are here today to present to you a proposed draft budget of our actions and services for our El Cap but before we get into that want to do a quick little unveil of a product that we have been working on you all received a little packet like so we do have one that the audience if somebody wants to see it but I just want to walk you through what this is and this will lead lead us into this into tonight's presentation so we are looking at our updates that we do to the community we're looking at the documents that we provide for our community and we are always pushing ourselves to say how could it be
better how could be more transparent how could it make more sense and so this is something that we have been working on so he's gonna want to walk you through this our al cap is it constructed via five goals and so what we did is we created one sheet per goal that gives you a snapshot of that al cap goal so at the very top is the most important thing which is the actual goal so here and go one the goal is increase to an achievement that this is what we're after right this whole section of the out cap this El Cap one this is the whole purpose of this section of the out cap and look in the goal one right and so below it right front and center are the data points or
the metrics on how we are going to measure our success towards this goal so if we're saying that student achievement increased student achievement these items below in the metric section this is what we are gauging to ensure that we are striving for or moving towards this goal now I will tell you that in regards to the metrics there are some metrics that are required by the state of California and some of these metrics funnel directly into our California dashboard and so I just want to note that so what we are after what is the big goal how we are measuring that and then below are the actions and services the things that we do to affect these metrics to reach the goal yeah so just kind of a quick dirty one-page outline a snapshot of
each of our goals and so we're thinking of incorporating this into our update section that's why you have the different colors this is the way our updates right now are currently organized in our updates so it's easy to to move through and so that's why these aren't color coordinated to match our updates so we're looking to incorporate these into that or some other fashion but you just wanted to kind of preview this so today we're gonna be walking you through a spreadsheet that talks about these actions and services below so today you're not gonna be seeing quote-unquote the AL cap okay so today it's about these actions and services the things that we are doing to affect the metrics to ultimately affect the goal and so I just want to give some some big ideas
on this spreadsheet so that we could navigate to that we do staff we do have staff here ready and available if you have particular questions on particular items but I just kind of want to give you a tour of what this is and how we got here so this is another piece of information that we are very proud of here in Azusa where we try to make our Al Capp transparent you can find all of this in our Al Capp our 200 page document but to navigate that is a little difficult and so we have created a spreadsheet to kind of make it easy to navigate so a couple of big big items a big big things in this in this document number one you will notice that there is a big item in goal
number two seven point two to be exact where we are proposing that the Dual Immersion program now gets funded through the out cap so in item seven point two you will see a big green item there right 1.7 million dollars six hundred nine thousand dollars so that wanted to point to you that this is this is a big pushin you will also notice as you go through the document there are other areas that are green which with signify increases in that area so on the front page right right away right in the front page under 4.1 you'll notice that there are two green boxes two items that have increased most of the other green items are because of the adjustments to staff so staff get step and column and so as we are looking at
their step and column as we're looking at getting the most accurate numbers at this point in time these green sections right here aren't because this is an accurate representation of the staff moving forward to 1920 so number one there are there are some greens one of them is because we're moving the Dual Immersion program we're proposing to move the Dual Immersion program into the out cap and number 2 staffing that represent what that staff will will will be in the year 1920 okay I thought you said 7.2 I don't see a 7.0 that is page one two three four five page five yeah okay all right so big idea number one there are some greens because of the greens there are some Reds and so Reds signify a decrease in those particular sections I do
want to talk about the Reds and how those came about we did meet with all of our Al Capp leads a one on one in meetings to discuss their al cap to discuss their areas to discuss their actions and services and to ensure that they were recommending decreases in the budget that would still allow them to do the things that they needed to do and so when we see Reds they those Reds are not arbitrary cuts we did meet with staff again one on one and met with them one I want to discuss their their areas and their actions and services and to get recommendations from them so that's item number two right we have increases and we have decreases item number three you will see some areas in this al cap that are highlighted
orange these orange sections I do want to walk through them because these these are our differences and so I just want to point them out to you so on page one you will notice that five point one is orange and that has been taken all the way down to zero this is a leftover from our mariachi program as you may know this year one of our teachers from Foothill Middle School took over the program we added him to the program and because of that addition this line item this five point one is no longer is no longer needed and so we are suggesting to just delete this five point one and because we do have staff now in the Mariachi then the four point one covers any particular needs that we might have with the
Mariachi program if we skip two pages and we move to 12.1 to our new board members your first day you have to approve a recommendation for history social studies and so 12.1 signals that we are adopting history social studies next year and so this signals an increase of one teacher on special assignment to support the implementation of our brand-new history social science curriculum training professional development professional learning for next year if we just flip one page I'm going to movie to 16.1 you will notice our two oranges there the first orange is a 3/3 our instructional aides that used to say 4:3 our instructional aides it's important to note that this is not a decrease in staffing this is just a decrease of one paid out of the out cap the fourth instructional aide is
would be funded out of special ed funds you will also notice that there is one FTE Tosa that one FTE Tosa that used to say 1.5 FTE toeses for a quick second there it seemed as we were going to be able to work with the selpa to hire at OSA that we would share half in half but that never matriculated and so that is just that that's just a fall off of that of that so we never had that point five it was something that we thought we were going to be able to do again it never came to fruition and so now that's just the one FTE total that we currently have so again that is not a decrease in staff okay that is correct that is correct that is correct that we are
not sharing with cellphone if we turn the page one more time I want to point your attention to one point two you will notice that 5 ft e TK teachers is orange that used to say 6 ft e TK teachers but because we don't have a class on street or a mountain view next year that's why that decrease is there we go down the same page on five point to where it says eight resource teachers again this is because we don't have a class on Street at a mountain view next school year and that's why that new number is there we turn the page one more time even though we already talked about this this is orange because this is an insertion here of nineteen Dual Immersion FTE teachers you will notice that the preschool
Dual Immersion teacher is is orange as is the to preschool Dual Immersion instructional aides the reason those are oranges because those are increases as well right now we are working to open a preschool Dual Immersion and a TK Dual Immersion at Valley do and so that's why that is orange because those would be funded from here as well as they were in the past these two positions were funded in the past out of the outcome if we flip to pages I want to bring your attention to eleven point three in eleven point three you see a little line that says three assistant principals this is orange because they see this used to be two assistant principals and so this recommendation is to increase that by by one to be funded out of the out cap
now that would be the addition would be for Sierra high school we turn the page one more time 27.4 you'll see that it says fun 21 percent of total cost of community liaisons this is not a change in funding or a change in what we plan to do just the way we had it worded in the past was confusing and so we just we just changed the wording so that it's it's more straightforward and transparent 21 percent of the total cost of community liaisons will be picked up out of the out cap so is that 21 percent of school site or is it still based on the need right because you put some in before that where there were none before right so then still the same way or is this 21 percent per school
site 21 percent of the total cost yeah so that was number three so number one was the insertions which were the green's staff and dual immersion if I can just summarize really quick number two were the Reds again we met with each I'll cap lead to discuss reductions number three were the oranges the the the the the new things are the different things in the out cap and then number four I want to wrap up with the pack Plus which is was part of my comments this morning I'm sorry since morning earlier today so I want to I want to point to two specific areas in the out cap that the pack plus as we went through this we did spend gosh four or five hours on this you know just going just answering every
question just try to be as detailed as possible and there are two recommendations that they made and those are reflected here and so I want to point those out so that so you know what they are on the first one is on ISM is right on page one and that is item three point one in item 3.1 you will notice that there is a decrease of $10,000 originally that decrease was $25,000 when they looked at this they said wow look at the number right below that the number right below the 40,000 that's 40,000 as well and so as they as they talked about that visual and performing arts they they felt that there needed to be equity there that the visual arts you need to have equity with the performing arts and so the recommendation
was to make sure that those two budgets were we're equal and so that's why you have 40,000 and 3.1 and 40,000 and 4.1 which is right below so that was recommendation number one recommendation number two I'm going to take you way back on the in the sheet and we are going to go all the way to the second to the last page eleven point four in eleven point four you have something called tkk one hour gap originally this was completely cut so this was a sixty three thousand dollar cut they had really good discussion just really speaking about the fact that they are representatives of the school sites representatives of Els representatives as a foster and that even though they personally might not have a TK or a kindergarten student that they had to push
themselves to really think about the fact that they're representing all parents and so at the end there was consensus that this had to be this had to come back you will notice that though right now there's a 13 and 13,000 dollar cut again this is because next year we will not have a class on street and we will not have a mountain view and so those are two schools that no longer need to be serviced and so therefore we don't need that that amount because they had two recommendations that increase the budget then the conversation had to be well then we just we just increase the budget by you know sixty thousand dollars where do we take that sixty thousand dollars from again lots of options came out during the the the course of the
day well let's take sixty thousand from here or let's say 60 thousand Premier what if we take thirty from here thirty from here at the end of the day a very creative good solution that everybody applauded and liked was thrown out and said if we take sixty thousand dollars or whatever that that total is it's around sixty thousand dollars what if we just take a percent of every line item and reduce it by that that way a it's equitable you're not saying sixty thousand from this line or thirty thousand thirty thousand from here number one it's equitable because it's on a percentage basis so that is what we did the percentage ended up being something like point one eight so less than one percent it was a just a micro it wasn't it was nothing
major and then what happens when it's connected to a salary though because that I wasn't disappear that's correct that wasn't touched so anything that could not be decreased was not decreased so anything that was a salary or a contract something like that that was not touched but even after all of that it was one about one tenth of a percent that that every other line item saw somewhere around there so those are the four talking points for today that we wanted to share with you and we wanted to be available if there were questions comments suggestions high-fives anything like that again we have staff ready to to answer if you have any questions any questions I'll just state my concern in that is I'm I'm not I'm not sure that I'm comfortable putting all of
the di teachers in into the Supplemental concentration so I mean I think but we still have to wait for them maybe you guys to come out this and looking at the state budget but I really think that we need to think thoughtfully about what that means in the message that's sending to to those classrooms so I just I just want to put that out there right now so there's not surprises later on coming down the road any other questions no okay well I mean I appreciate the process I appreciate the fact that our pack plus committee members dedicated a lot of a large amount of time right and we really am I know that they invested their time and we at and I really appreciate that and I think Adrienne you're you're you're an alumni

of new and revised board policies and administrative regulations related to personnel AR 4217 point 11 board policy 49 19 point 21 and a are for two to two and four policy for two to 31 any any questions yes I have a question on the VP for two one 9.20 one professional professional standards I just noticed on wala I'm asking on on the second page which is engaging in any conduct and endanger student staff others including but not physical limited violence threat or possession of firearm I'd like to know nowhere in here that I see because now in the 21st century then we should add social media cyberbullying because it happens I'm sure but I think we should put it in this policy because I think we should add it this time I'm not sure if
we're working on it or yes one place where that's possible is if you look right on that page if you look at number two so just on the second page of this policy number two says engaging in harassing or discriminatory behavior right in there we could add including on social media toward students parents guardians etc yes all right great we'll make that change so this is information so no action is required this will come to board on consent next week and so with that the meeting is now adjourned at 8:50
