Then the commendation will be placed into a um frame and then we'll make sure that it is delivered to the high school to be um hung in a in a location that everyone can see. [clears throat] Oh, wow. You took Let's go. Nicely done. Coach Clay, would you like to come up and introduce your coaching staff? And then if you would like a moment to address the board, um, then please do so. Thank you guys. Thank you for setting this up tonight. Thank you for uh acknowledging Barcel High School football varsity Aztecs program and the success
that they they've done up to this point. Um what we're going to do here just so everyone knows is I'm going to call up our coaching staff. our coaching staff's going to share um what this journey and what this win means to them um very short and briefly and I'll close us off and then um we'll hand it back to our superintendent coaches. Could you guys make your way up? >> Yes, sir. >> [laughter] >> Hello. Hi everybody. I'm Coach Russell. U what what a season start off. What can I say? I was uh I was telling the boys from the start, hey, we're going state. All we got to do is work hard, believe. They trust the process. They put the work in and the results show. So proud of them. I watched most
of them since elementary grow up and it was just amazing to see how far they come from start to beginning. Hello. Um, I'm coach Alo Leafy. I'm the varsity linebacker coach. Um, this means a lot because I've graduated from there. I played from there. Been coached by Coach East, uh, Coach Hedi, Coach Smith. And so being able to play in the system, go to a D1 level, and then give what we have to our athletes, it means a lot. Um especially because uh my son is a senior. And so just to be able to be able to take this journey with my nephews, my son, all my brothers here, I mean, it means it means a lot. And like we just we really appreciate you guys, you athletes for and your parents for entrusting your
kids into our uh coaching abilities. Um they're they're they're the best way that we know how. So we just thank you guys. Uh my name is Coach Leo. I coach the DBs. Uh first I just want to give praise on all praise, honor and glory to our father for just all these accolades and all these victories that we have accomplished. Without him, none of this will be possible. Uh but this right here um truly it is for me it's just a blessing. A blessing with all the accolades and all the CIF regional that's nice. But honestly to see your smiles on your face that in the life story which we lived with each other day in and day out that grind that perseverance that overcoming adversity to see you put that hard work even though
it was sometimes you know what I'm saying wasn't always there right but that is life but we live we learn and we love through it all truly to see your happiness and the joy on your face after every victory it was not greatness is not >> it is >> greatness [clears throat] is not Yeah, >> is earned right? So understand that and honestly the real blessing is the exposure for you kids. If you are to go to the next level, we pray for this exposure for you so that the coaches and the colleges can see your greatness of which we see the potential of each and every one of you. So it truly is a blessing that they see you now. They see what you're capable of. They see that we have athletes who are
of men of character, strength, and honor. character, treating others how you want to be treated, strength, overcoming adversity and honor, doing the right things when no one isn't looking. You're not just Oh my goodness. Sorry. I love you guys. >> It it's it's a blessing. It truly is a blessing of the life journey that we lived with each other and so excited for your futures, especially for those who are going. And if even if you're not going to football, right, the characteristics of you bu of which you built, right, you can use that in your life. Everything that you've learned, trust you transition in everything that you do and you'll see that greatness and success is yours. But you have to make it. >> I love you guys. >> My name is Coach Arnold. >>
A lot of you know me. I've coached I coached many years up here with uh with Clay underneath Clay with Clay. Um really what it comes down to is to the parents. Moms, dads, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, you're the ones who are the backbone of the kids coming up here playing. All we do is we guide them. This is a well structured coaching staff right here. I've never been on a coaching staff like this as long as I've been at Barto High School. I've seen some come close, but not like this. This here is a lot of talent, and they shared all that talent with your kids. your children, family, parents, everybody and anybody. And I was grateful to be here to enjoy this cuz at let's say years back when I was coming up,
I was walking with two coaches across the field and we were young and they told me, "Arnold, are you going to still come back and coach?" I said, "Yeah, if I'm asked to come back." So, we started talking some more. And what they told me was, "You need to stick around because there's this group boys coming up the line. They're at youth football right now. They're going to make a change. They're going to do it and they're going to go all the way. I heard that and I know those two today and I was grateful to be here to enjoy it and everything else. And these boys are man, they make me crazy sometimes, [laughter] but they're good. They're good kids. Some of the things that come out of their mouth. [laughter] >> I love
you guys all. Thank you very much. >> Uh my name is Coach Nike. Uh I'm the huddle manager. What's huddle? Huddle is what we use for game day scouting other teams film and what we send out to colleges and huddle. Uh what makes this very special for me when this senior class right here, I was the freshman head coach for of these seniors and we had a rock run in. We was amazing lights out and we knew from then actually we knew the year before in the eighth grade level that this team these players were very special. Then with that I had three of these kids since the age of six coaching from the youth level all the way up. So that's what makes it very special. That's how you finish out your football career
at the youth to high school level. Thank you. >> Uh hello everybody. Um my name is Coach John or uh Coach Hicks. Uh don't mind me. I'm a little nervous. I get nervous in front. Um, I am the freshman DC and the uh one of the assistant defensive coaches on the varsity staff. Um, I've watched a lot of these boys uh the last few years. Um, a lot of them from the youth level. Uh, some of them I'm still coaching now. Um, I love you guys, man. Uh this was a great experience for me because as well I went here um didn't get a chance to graduate here because I had to move but I was under coach Oppy and uh coach Arnold here and they taught me a lot uh just coming back and
watching you guys from the youth level just play your game. already knew you had g. And as I tell you all the time, give yourself a opportunity and just give it all. Don't back down. Keep working. And you did it. You did. I'm just a supporter. As I tell you all the time, I'll strap it up with you, but I can't play. But you can get out there and and change the game. And you did. So, just wanted to give you guys my love, appreciation. go out there, continue to freaking be great. All right. And to the uh board, thank you for allowing me to be part of this family, fellas. Thank you. Thank you. Thank God. >> God is good. >> It was the God that got us the victory. We had told him,
several of them, especially the nephews that are connected to us. Um, the victory was already claimed. We just had to go out there and execute. I am one of the younger coaches, Coach Opie. Um, [laughter] as was mentioned, uh, I coached them when they were itty bitty. I was probably changing day diapers. But, uh, I'm so blessed to be at this moment. I've seen several of them grow into great men, and I'm just blessed to to witness this with you guys. Um, I've seen athletes come and go and, um, just to let remind you and let you know about your greatness, um, everything that you learn to this program doesn't only stay here. Sometimes um, athletes, they they wrap their identity within just that. And if they don't get to that point of where they
hoped to gain, they think it's all and done. But everything that you learned, it's going to nurture you and groom it groom, it's grooming you as a man, as a husband, as a father. And so we provided our heart to you and it just became natural that we won state but it was already written in his plan. It was already your assignment. Hopefully you saw the zeal and the passion and the toughness that you gained through mental, physical, spiritual cuz we weren't just giving you the the X's and the O's, right? >> You're receiving it spiritually. But you executed. You're the one who did it. But we thank you for committing to us as coaches, as your fathers, as your as your as your as as your parent. If you saw us and just like
I mentioned that I I think about coach Williams, I was his TA. Um I was under under him and to to win this u as a team and and to um just finish off his his legacy. But most importantly, my soul, Coach Clay, for trusting in us and bringing me as a receiver coach. Even though I played defense my whole life [laughter] in order for us to beat the defense, he he brought me to the offensive side and he he saw value in just like we saw in you. We see your pinch, your potential. We see your greatness and we love you. Everyone, >> board members, distinguished guests, bars community, our Aztec family. Greet you all in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior on this wonderful evening. My name is Christopher Mullo.
I serve as the defensive coordinator for the varsity team. I'm [clears throat] going to proudly stand up here in front of you all the heartful thanksgiving humbled because like unlike many of the fine men behind me, I'm not from Barstow. I wasn't raised here. My wife's maiden name is Nuli. And >> when I sat down with one of her brothers many years ago, we had shared a conversation about the game in which we love so much with his football. And he shared with me a a story about a a a group called the House of Pain. And he talked about how this town can rally together if they have a common cause or if they have something to cheer for. and the stadium would be packed and there would be extra seating that would be
in the back of the end zones. Kids would be running around. It would be truly like a town event. Everybody knew what you were doing on Friday of Barcel was playing in Barstone. Then I had the opportunity to get hired by my brother here, Coach Clay. And that's always been a dream of mine is to bring back or be part of bringing back something that truly is at the core at the identity of this wonderful town. And so I'm grateful because what we saw on Friday from marching down the fire lane to driving out to Main Street and onto the freeway is exactly what Barcelo is all about. And then looking up in the stands in Buena Park [clears throat] on a Friday evening and seeing it packed out is what Bartow's all about. And
now standing before everyone here looking at my young sons out here, this [clears throat] is what Barcelo is all about. >> [laughter] >> Uh I shared with the team the defensive side a message after our game about how this is a core memory of your life but don't make this the summit of your life right make this the foundation going forward now because you know what you are able to achieve if you do the hard things over and over again and that's making the choice to show up to commit to doing something all the way through and being honest about it and then being proud out of the results that come out of the work that you put in. And that goes to being a father, that goes to being a husband, that goes to
being a friend, community member, your coach, service member, whatever it is. You know, many of the men behind me have instilled a lot of characteristics to the kids. And one thing that I'm most grateful for about this entire journey is what Barstow has instilled in me. And it's that powerhouse feel where it's a small town but it's big pride. And so I'm proud to be a Barstow native and I'm proud to represent this program and I'm proud to be part of this team. Um the smartest thing that I did was just get out of the kids' way because these guys are some talented dudes. And um I think that what you've seen is just a lot of love here for these people here. This is a full circle moment, I think, because we were back
in we were in this room in August and this board gave us our first victory of the year, right? And being able to complete our coaching staff so that we can go out and then we can bring back the hardware that's in front of you all here today. So, God bless you all in Jesus name. Amen. Um my co my my coach my name is Nathaniel Stone. I was the JV head coach and um JV offensive coordinator and also the varsity offensive coordinator. Um, oh man, this to me is so beautiful just because how we started this season here and now we're back here. Um, thank the board superintendent Mr. Williams. Thank you. Thank you for uh giving me a chance and um um pushing the issues to fight for me. Coach Hooker, everybody in
this room, everybody standing next to me, behind me, I appreciate you guys. Um I've been coaching these kids for a long time. Some of them um me and Chevy went to high school together. [laughter] Yeah. [laughter] No. Um [clears throat] I love what we did this year. I appreciate the uh positivity from everybody. even the negative the negativity it still fueled you fueled us to be better. Um felt like I had something to prove this year and [snorts] I think we did it. Not just me but we my coaches, my family, my mom, everybody. Uh thank you city of Barstow. Thank you school district. Thank you, lady. [laughter] >> You did something. >> Yes. >> Um, >> you did something I was never done before and you gave a coach a chance [snorts] and look
where we are now. >> [laughter] >> So, this goes to prove that although coach's [clears throat] names at the top of it, I can't do it without these guys. like there's a reason there's a purpose for everyone's role in a program in the school district on the board of our high school right everyone has a has a role everyone has a purpose these these fine gentlemen here have served that purpose to the utmost I mean the hours you guys wouldn't imagine the sacrifice away from their families you wouldn't even imagine these gentlemen here have put in so much I've heard rumblings where people say it's because of these kids is why we're here. I've also heard rumblings that they say it's because of this coaching staff is why we're here. I'm here to tell you
it's because of the coaches and the kids. That's exactly why we're here. >> Yeah. >> And that's it. That's the bottom line. >> We cannot do what we do with this amazing gifted kids right here. And we just had to be the light to their footsteps so that they could get get us here. Like coach Mutal said, we just had to get out of their way. get out of the way, put the candles on the side, and guide them to where they have to get to. So, with that, thank you student athletes. I appreciate you guys. Long summer practices, 110 degrees out there. Like, no one knows the grind that you guys went through. And this is the freshman class when this staff took over. This was our first true class right here. So, what
does that mean? Next year is next year, right? But we're not going to think about next year. We're going to soak our feet in this moment today. We're going to soak it in in in in the next couple of days and ensure that we enjoy this process, enjoy this location. Next year will be when we get to when we flip the calendar, we'll we'll we'll look at next year. But school board, thank you guys so much. Superintendent, assistant soups, secretaries, Miss Navaro, Mr. Williams, thank you guys so much. I had a conversation with Mr. Williams this week where I know this. So, he coached me in high school and I know he's [clears throat] on the verge of leaving and um what a send off. What a send off, right? I I I hope we
all get a retirement like him, right? Where we could call ourselves champions in our job titles, right? Um but I did encourage him and you know say whoever steps into that role next, let them be a blessing and not a blocker. >> Amen. >> Right. Whoever wears that hat next and sits in that seat and wears those shoes, let's ensure that they're a blessing to these kids and there just not hurdles in the way where we have to jump >> because we have we will get here again. We will >> we'll get here again. But it's once again it's going to take all of us. >> So from the bottom of my heart, thank you guys. I appreciate you guys for giving this opportunity for us. [laughter] Thank you athletes for all your hard work.
We have a lot of celebration ahead, a lot. So enjoy it. Thank you parents. Thank you guys all in Jesus name. We all say >> amen. >> Mr. Mr. Nar. [clears throat] >> I I was blessed with the opportunity to be uh principal of Barcel High School about three years ago uh when Miss Renjen came into my office at Central High School and offered the opportunity for me to step in as interim principal at Barcel High. Um I asked her to please give me an hour and talk to my wife about this big change. Thank you. Yes. [laughter] uh to talk over with my wife to let her know this decision that uh Miss Renjon and God put in front of me at that point when she first asked me in my heart I already
knew what my answer was going to be and talking over with my wife telling me that she supported my decision that she trusted me with the decision to make Um, I stepped in into this principal position. I was very fortunate enough right from the get-go. You can get to know how wonderful, how talented these boys are. My first experience at the football field was at the axe game and I was not confirmed as the interim principal yet. So, I was standing on the sidelines at Victor Valley High School, still remember. I got photos like I'm still there wearing my uh my polo standing on the opposite side of that field which I stood for six years as the same principal of Victor High wearing that ugly green. [laughter] [laughter] I stepped to that side on
the visitor's side for the first time ever as an administrator and just seeing the talent that I saw in front of me that day, the dedication, the work. Coach Clay had no idea who I was, but he welcomed me with open arms. Players saw this guy referring to me standing right there on the sidelines, cheering them on. and that glorious moment at the end where I got to hold that axe as a member of a Aztec family. And that for me is going to be a moment that I will never forget in my life because that was my introduction what it means to be an Aztec, to be part of this family, to be part of this district that it not only means a lot to these kids, but clearly see uh what it means
to this community. And I'll be honest with you because I'm if if you know me, I'm a real upfront guy. As much as I would love to be I knew this we were celebr my my moments. I'm not going to lie that zero and three start was a little bit [laughter] tough and and and I remember talking to coach and coach you can vouch this for me. I told him we it's all right coach we got this. Next game's going to be better. Next game is going to be better. And guess what? Every single game after that, after we lost the last time, we taste we tasted defeat. Every single moment we've been getting better. We really show who we are. And you clearly have shown that this past month in this wonderful playoff run.
This is going to be a moment for the rest of my life I will always cherish. I always remember and I want to thank you because you gave me this opportunity to be part of this. So, thank you. Can we give this guy these teams? Lastly, I I know Mr. Williams, uh, you've been a mentor to me all these years. Um, [snorts] believe it or not, when I was wearing that ugly green color, there was a moment in my life that I I honestly thought talking to Mr. Williams said, "Hey, how can can I come to Barstow to to to be part of your admin team?" because I know what kind of man he is, what he means to this town, and what he means to this school. I'm just lucky and blessed I got
to work with him the last couple of years. So, sir, thank you so much for everything. Mr. Ren, thank you so much for letting me part of this. Appreciate you. >> I just feel blessed after listening to all our co here. That's why we won state. Wasn't that just amazing? >> I love you guys. I love the coaches staff. I love the players. >> I just want to say thank you. Thank you board. I appreciate it. It's just an amazing feeling and I thank all you guys. I see hard work >> and it's just it's just a great feeling for me. It's a great feeling for Barcel. We thank you all. Thank you so much for all your hard work. Williams, Mr. Navaro, and Coach Clay right up here. [clears throat] Just provide you the
the resolution. We will take it back from you. But, uh, this is the resolution that I just read a moment ago and we'll put it in frame. Make sure it's displayed somewhere at the high school where it's prominent and everyone can see it when they walk in the doors. We're also going to get some pictures taken. So, Coach Clay, congratulations. >> And just a moment for me to say congratulations. >> I was there Friday night. It was an amazing [clears throat] game. So, good job. Thank you for representing Barstow the community as well as the school district as you did. You're amazing young men and we're so happy to have you a part of the Aztec family and a part of the Barci School District family. So, thank you very much and congratulations for this
win. Let's do that. >> All right, everybody. State champions. Hey, [clears throat] [laughter] >> I was gonna say it's a lot of hard work. >> Let's get the team up. Yeah. >> Voice up here. [laughter] >> Yeah, they're having a special. I don't care. [laughter] >> [laughter] [laughter] >> Get him about. [laughter] Yeah. >> [laughter] >> Does that make you look? [laughter] >> One, two, three. State champions. >> 67. What [laughter] >> I'm here sit on [laughter] that one more kind of ruined a lot. >> Why are you on your tippy jeans? >> [laughter] >> Everybody on Instagram. One more. [laughter] [laughter] >> Why you on your tippy toes, bro? Up here [laughter] on the table. >> No, it's for it's for >> them up on my lip. [laughter] >> I know. I am. >>
There you go. Right there. >> [laughter] >> I got >> that over here. moment. >> Okay, we are going to quickly wrap up the meeting. >> But before we do that, I want to make a quick announcement to let everyone know that we have light refreshments in the conference room, which is just out the door and around um as soon as we adjourn the meeting. So, thank you. Okay. >> Anyone have anything they would like to say? >> I can say something. >> Sure. >> You guys are amazing. Oh my gosh. I'm really really proud of you guys. You guys represent our city so well. Just keep up the good work. This is just the beginning, right? I think one of the coaches mentioned like this isn't your peak, right? This is the beginning of
what you have to do in the future. So, just thank you guys. We really appreciate it and you're lighting up the city. So, thank you so much. Yeah, I was at the 1969 CIF Championship game and I don't know there's too many other people in Barcela was there and uh I can remember almost all the players names. Uh quarterback was Paul the Law, fullback was Robert Evans, his brother was Garland Evans, uh Dennis Owens was another half. I could probably go through the whole lineup. So the players, everybody's looking up to you guys, the whole town. You know, you know, as a eighth grader, I can remember all those guys names. Uh, you know, uh, my mom didn't want me to go to the game because I was acting up. I snuck out of the
