order 5:30. Um, can I get a motion to adopt the agenda with the addendum for item 8? >> So move. >> All in favor? >> No. >> Okay. Please rise for a moment of silence and the >> ready begin. >> I aliance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all. Okay. Item four, student representative report. Who wants to go first? >> Um, we're anticipating 24 graduates by next week, including me. >> The Pacific and our final one is next week for the graduates to Disney. It's all So basically for graduates >> is it grad night or is it just today? >> No, we're doing our own thing. >> Uh then we had cooking classes last
week. No, it wasn't last week. Um but the week before we were making white chocolate strawberry pancakes I did the best and class is making. Don't know what that is, but it's this week. Um there's been a total of 62 classes completed since the last board meeting. Each student has completed two classes since last board. That's about it. >> Okay. So May was packed with staff appreciation week and ASB ASB class officer elections happening the first week. All of our classes have new officers as well as ASB and they will be announced at the facility. The week after the class of 2027 hosted a very successful prom midnight in Manhattan with the spirit week. Prom assembly was May 15th and prom was on May 16th at the Mitten building in Redlands. Powderpuff flag football was
also May 15th with the senior and sophomore class winning. Our every 15 program every 15 minutes program took took place May 20th and May 21st with a crash scene guest speaker and memorial assembly. It was very successful program with with many local organiz organizations first responders and entities assisting us with putting it on. If you have not seen our video from this year, it is available to view on YouTube to close to close out the very busy month. Friends of BBHS hosted a giving for Paws which was a first annual kick off kickball tournament and they made $450 and received many pet donations to go to those TK tassels was May 29th and it took place last Friday and the seniors got to do some fun activities with the TKers at the stadium. The Halo
scholarships were on Saturday this past weekend, this past weekend. And there were 51 um recipients that received scholarships totaling around $153,000. Seniors kicked off the month with their elementary and middle school walk, visiting their old schools, interacting with younger students, and reminiscing over their eighth grade photos. Later that night, Mr. Wilson had an art and art club hosted an open studio night where students worked on pottery, prepared for finals, showcased their art, and enjoyed pizza while they while they chatted about summer. Tonight at 6:30 p.m., the Undead Poet Society presents its annual Sunset Slam featuring over 25 students performing original uh poetry, standup comedy, and songs. Tomorrow night at 6 p.m. local scholarships will be awarded at the pack where seniors will also watch their senior videos for the first time this Friday dedicated to
seniors starting with the senior breakfast yearbook signing and panoramic pictures. ASB will then host our annual from 10:24 through 11:24 a.m. which includes a yearbook dedication recognition of retiring staff fun games Mr. Benson is of course reading all the places you'll go and the announcement of class and ASP officers with the eighth graders also in attendance. This this school year will conclude with graduation. Thank you for the privilege of allowing me to report you guys for the for the past two years. It has been an honor and next year our ASB officers will be rotating each week to report. I hope you all have a great >> Thank you. So, um, >> you're 11th grade, right? You were robbed at that powder puff game is what I understand. >> Oh my gosh. There was a
whole bunch of driving. >> Exactly. >> I was wrong. Actually, >> yes, exactly. >> Joshua, when you do your cooking, what what's what's the layout there? What do you have to cook with? >> We have We just got this like thing. It has a stove on it, sink, and like connection oven. It's pretty cool. Like you just plug it in, it's ready to go. >> It's just one big unit. >> Cool. >> What are your plans for uh this summer and beyond? Are you still thinking about it? >> The beach travel and then I got finals to watch later versus the Spurs. >> It's a big one. That's a big one. >> Different kind of finals I was expecting. >> I'm with you on that one. I I lived in San Antonio when the Spurs
won here. >> The city went bananas. I mean, parade from the airport when they arrived. It was crazy. >> So, I'm from New York, and I vividly remember the last time we were in the championships, 1999. I was in Mr. Sheddder's wedding, and the second they walked back down the aisle, I ran inside the house to watch the game against the Spurs, but we we lost. >> So, we're looking to bring a champion. Root for the right team, please. That's a bad ending. >> I know. Well, you know, the shaders are just still mad, so that's good. >> Yes. >> Okay. Okay. Um on in front of you, got some minor gifts for you. We want to thank you for all the time and effort I know it takes to put together your report to
let us know. We really we really do appreciate you coming. Um and you've been for two years and Joshua, we've enjoyed you as well. So those are were minor tokens of our appreciation for all the effort you put into it. >> Thank you. Thanks guys. >> You can take your name tag with you as it as >> your name plates. And then Nish said next year it's going to be rotating anyway. >> Okay. Then you get to take your name plate with you as well. >> And you don't need to stay. >> Thank you guys. See you guys. Okay, item five. We've got comments from this. >> Um we are here to say thank you again. >> Yes, and Becky um for our uh agreement um that we reached with the district and the school
board. We wanted to Thank you from the bottom of our hearts that half of our team's here. Jenny is on our negotiating team also. And um we just want you to know when I when I ever I speak I always say it's life-changing. This one is triple life changing with the health and welfare benefits. Um I'm going to choke up talking about because this is truly an amazing thing that happened. And Becky's going to use herself as an example, but we wanted to thank you for thinking outside the box. Um Mr. Marquez suggests um with the angry I guess the with the um bonus um part of that it's equal for all of us. It's something that classified has never been equal to anybody here ever with administration or teachers. We've never been equal and
this was totally equal. Totally. >> So we wanted to Thank you. Yeah, and it is truly life-changing. But I wanted Becky to explain her benefits and what it's done for her. I'm just going to use myself as an example. Um, I have myself and my daughter. If I did not have my daughter on my plan, I would be free because I'm an 8 hour 261 employee, but I have Belle on my plan. So, this year I was paying $390 a month. We had a significant increase with Kaiser and Blue Shield this year. I have Kaiser, so I can tell you it went up to $700. Whoa. >> For the 2627 year with the gracious $3,000 that you guys submitted. And then we have another piece that we use called fun 17. My insurance is actually
going down from $390 a month to 153. So, I think it's very important you guys realize how huge that. And I'm a full-time employee. We have part-time employees, four hour, five hour, six hour. So, they're going to feel it, too. And the one time bonus thing was huge. We have people that got $12 last year for their 1% retro. This those those $12 people will be getting $480. It's huge. So I just thank you. Thank you all. Very very cool. >> Okay. Item six. Is this me or >> thank you everybody who came to see night last night. A lot of you guys were there. So I just want to say as the sen coordinator at the middle school, I appreciate you guys being there. Thank you. Um so I'm going to be ending five
years as president. So thing I just wanted to do was um I'm a math teacher so I like stats. Uh so I want to throw some numbers at you. So for the last five years of negotiations we've gotten 22.08% in raises on salary. That's huge. Uh we've also gotten $5,800 now assuming that you guys approve our tenative agreement on our health and welfare which again is super important. We all know how important it is for us to retain our highly qualified teachers, especially people who have families. Those people bring ABA to our district. Um we want them to be able to afford to stay here and not move away. Uh so that again just as my classified counterparts mentioned, it's very very important and so we're very very happy for that. I would also had
a 1% off schedule raise in 2122 and that extra thousand this year um for 2526. So even though the 2.75 doesn't go into effect until 26 27, I'm assuming we're still going to be allowed to negotiate, not me, but for next year. Um so I'm going to count that 22.08% over 5 years um as part of something that we have to accomplish on my team. So anyway, uh I'm just going to ask that you guys please accept ETA. Another I'm very proud of that we've worked very very hard on is updating our contract language. Um our the contract I'm going to be very honest with you was quite outdated five years ago. Uh we have put a significant amount of time and energy and I did a lot of work last year um on getting
this contract to be something that's comparable to other school districts. Um we also did some significant changes with negotiations procedures that started about three years ago with getting everything written down and very official and that was due to the work that Susan Miller, my vice president, and I did by going to CTA and getting a full week of training on how to do that. Um, and so I'm hoping that those things continue. Um, but again, none of that work would be possible without your guys's approval. So, I just want to say thank you so much and please the TA. >> That's it. >> Thank you. >> Thanks. >> Okay. Item seven, public comment. I don't have any cards. Anybody? Okay. We can move on to the consent calendar as amended by for item H. I
get a motion. >> I approve with the I'll second it. >> All in favor? >> I oppose. >> No. Unanimous. >> There are no items to move to the consent calendar. So, we move on to employee announcements which is always the highlight of the meeting. >> Always. It's exciting. We have a great We have a few great ones tonight. Always do. Okay. In classified, it's all classified staff this evening. Um, student services and this is a little bit of a a change in position what Christy job used to be at certain student services. It is now student services in a EOP coordinator. So, it's we've needed this ELOP for a while. We've needed support in the district office to be this is a lot of money that comes in EOP. It needs to be monitored
much better as far as the services we have for students, everything. So, we're really excited about this one. Uh, and that goes to she is in the audience to the wonderful Alejandra Vargas. I will have you introduce your family in just a minute. So, um, Alejandra has has since uh since joining Northshore in 2024 as a ELL vet aid, Alejandra has demonstrated an exceptional ability to connect with families. Her dedication and interpersonal skills will make her an invaluable addition to the student services team. So, she will be here at the district office with us. So, all of us at the district office, we're really excited about having her. I know she's going to do amazing things. It's it's an exciting position of what it can be for the ELO program, for the after school program,
and I know she's going to do great things for us. Can you go ahead and introduce who's with you this? >> Thank you so much. I'm here with my daughter, my mom, my niece, and my sister are here. >> Thank you. >> So, she's been wonderful. She did a wonderful job with the interviews, and Chrissy, I know she's at Baldwin right now. And Chrissy, um Chrissy and Shannon both couldn't say nothing but wonderful things about her. loser, but she is absolutely amazing. But we know she's going to do great. >> Okay. >> Uh, next is our grant funded uh, bilingual e student success leazison, which is the little bit transition position from what Dr. Crow was doing. And she's not here this evening, but we're excited to have Brenda Wellness. friend used to be at
the high school with us uh as a teacher, but now she's moved into this position. She was she helped us out a little bit with our immigrant population this year with some extra funding we had for that. And now she moved into this position uh bringing a wealth of experience both as certificated uh substitute and a Spanish teacher at Baker High School. Bren is a well position Brenda is well positioned for success in this new role. We look forward to her contributions and fostering the academic achievement for our English learner students. This is an a position we're really excited about for our EL students because of the fact that what it is is it's going to bridge a little bit of the gap. We don't have a Spanish speaking counselor, so it's going to help
to make sure our EL students are meeting a A throughG requirements, making sure they're taking classes, checking in on them. It is districtwide, but we'll start to focus on the high school. That's the greatest need of the middle school and work our way down as we adjust to this program. And her being a teacher at some point at the high school is extremely helpful. uh it was required they had to have a college degree because we want to make sure we're encouraging students to go to college if they choose to do so. Uh that this is a really important position and she happened to be the perfect person for us. So we're excited right now in this position. Okay. And we have a special um a driver for Steven Beltran in our transportation department. Steven
initially joined us as a classified substitute uh managing student transportation to Apple Valley. Having proven his commitment with our students in the mod severe special education program, he will now take lead on a newly established transportation grid. He's been great. I know I just talked to Sean about it today. Sean's excited to have him on his team. And that's it for announcements. Okay. Um, you're still up. Superintendent Thomas. >> Yes, sir. Uh, if you don't mind, I'm just going to read something real quick because I wanted to make sure it was a just as both of our leaders said and our union leaders said, it was a good negotiating season. I want to say I would like to thank the leadership from both teams for both associations for their professionalism, collaboration, and willingness to engage
in meaningful dialogue on behalf of their members. Some those are always hard discussions, but it was very respectful and everybody listens and it was one on both teams. It was a really great learning experience for everybody that we everyone heard each other out. It really was a good experience. I genuinely appreciate their willingness to have honest discussions with the common purpose of doing what's best for students while supporting employees who they serve. I am grateful for the partnership we have built and the countless contributions each of you have made to our schools and community. On behalf of the district, thank you for your leadership, your service, and continued dedication to the students and family of Valley. So, thank you to our leadership team leadership. We appreciate that. Okay, a couple things. Um, kickball. It was
a huge success. Our first annual kickball, which will continue our kickball game, which Brian and I participated in. Um, >> won. >> Huh? >> Okay. Can I explain? >> So, you did it. >> Okay. Hold on. Hold on. They play the students first. So, the seniors played the underassman cream, right? Like 15 to nothing. So, we get scared, right? We get scared a little bit, but we came in, we were losing the whole game. If we would have only had to play 45 or 50 minutes, we would have won that game. We were leading the whole game. >> Old people old people petered out. It >> was a curve. >> It was a curve and they didn't uh It really was a lot of fun. It really was a lot of fun. There was a
lot of smack talking back and forth, especially when you when you have somebody like uh Mr. Benson uh who was coaching the other team and then Kevin Catcher who had trouble holding his tongue a little bit. It was it was a really great experience, a lot of fun, something that they want to continue. Thank you to Miss Perkins and actually this came from it something that Austin Cheek, a student really wanted to make happen and we had some support from them from the staff that helped make it happen and they and as I told other people about it, they're like, "Oh my god, we didn't realize that was happening, but an email went out, but not really everyone sees these things, right?" So, different staff was really excited about next year. I think it's going
to be a bigger event. It was meant to raise money for an a a charity for animals. So, it was really a good event. They raised like $600. It was wonderful. Really proud of Austin Chief for doing this on on his way out as a senior that he was able to help create hopefully a lasting event. So, that was really proud of him for that and the entire It was just a great event to be a part of. Uh, senior walks at Baldin Northshore and they include the middle school this year where they walk around the schools and the kids cheer them. That was really nice. They added the middle school this year. always one of my highlights of the year for me to be able to go and see the kids that we all
once had at Northshore at Baldwin. To be able to walk the hallways was is a big deal and they get to run the hallways one last time at Northshore and I know Chrissy did a great job at Baldwin putting things together and making it a celebration for them. The kids are genuinely looked at as heroes as they walk through the halls. It was nice that they added the middle school to add that extra month to the middle school this year and as an added bonus the kids even got to keep expanding every year to make it a bigger bigger event. Uh Rita and her team put together a great lunch. So they ended walking through the halls at the middle school and then Rita and her team provided lunch. I didn't go to that middle
school because I was at one of the schools, but I heard that it was just an amazing spread. Of course, Rita just and her team do an amazing job and thank you to Rita and her team for doing that. So they did a really good job with that. Um thank you to the BBMS team night. Got you doing that. The teachers did a wonderful job. It was great to see some of the other schools participating as well to see the high school um students there and talk to them a little bit. uh Mrs. Neielsson from Northshore being there and having all her sewing machines set up. It was a really nice event and I thank everyone for all their efforts with that. Uh that was wonderful. Mahalo Awards that was always a fun night because
it's not it is for students. It's all about the students but to be able to hear the students talk about their honor honored educators. For me as a as a superintendent, that's one of the great parts. And we we're really on this campaign as a as a cabinet to making sure we have an understanding where we're all educators. everybody from the bus drivers to the cafeteria and everybody and Paula Kendall Paula Kendall who is a cafeteria worker at the high school got a honored educator working um I think I had the name Kayla um but Kayla Smith honored her and it was really sweet it always is wonderful and it happens probably once a year it happens where you see a classified staff get recognized and they realize that it's inspiring to see that every
classified every staff member can have just as much of a conducting on student. It's inspiring that the other people see that that that impact can happen. I've seen other get it before. We've custodians get it before. We've seen aids get it before. And it is just something wonderful that students can look back in their 12 13 years career with Bear Valley Unified. And when they focus on a classified staff is just something special. >> Not only that, but the elementary. >> Yes. regardless of the classification when they recognize elementary and middle school >> when they go back that far. >> Yeah. Cuz you had Dian Bley who retired um Terresa Porter who was back in first grade. You had all these teachers from way back then when they go through their years. It really is
wonderful. You know, there was a lot of great teachers that got multiple ones. You know, uh Mr. Fliss got quite a few teachers that get quite a few. So it really says a lot to their teaching and their not just their teaching but their ability to connect with students and unforgettable marks on those students. So you know classified everyone's an educator and it's important as I said sunset sign this evening senior step down on Friday uh grad night and I wanted to thank all the principles right now because of the fact that cabinet and I are having to plan for next year and there's a lot of changes especially the special education that we're having to make moves and all of a sudden you know um Mr. Drake is coming to us. We have more
spend. We got to look at this different. Got to look at it different. And then also we made adjustments and the principles. Thank you so much. >> Um they were the principles have been great about making adjustments and making shifts as far as where classes go. Just had a conversation had a conversation with them this evening with one of the principles just now before this and she was quiet. She says, "You know what? We'll do whatever it takes to make it work." you know, and I appreciate that from the principles and that flexibility knowing that we're a small district and when these changes are coming so fast trying to plan for their next year, I really appreciate this team of principles and their flexibility and helping us make work. So, and that's what we're doing
right now is as we're getting towards the end of the year, everyone's looking at the end of the year and cabinet were in this panic trying to making sure we're going to be set for the beginning of the year. So, it's an interesting time of year. Thank you for it. >> Okay. Uh let me be governing board member reports to want to start. >> I'll just tag on what Mandy said. It was in the Halo awards too. Um one of the things I noticed this year was that it seemed that it really was dispersed amongst kids with all kinds of different plans other than just going to college. Some college trade schools. >> But the one thing that caught my attention was I can't remember I've been on the board 16 years. I don't ever
remember until last year any of our students going to an Ivy League school and Tikki got into Brown and then there's a girl that's going to Columbia >> also UCLA get Gracie and then there were two kids going to Berkeley so >> I thought that was interesting that that they broke into the the Ivy League race there different students that got awards >> yes >> I don't view perfectly as Ivy League >> an elite I call it the People's Republic. >> I read it. >> Um I just um Jana left, but I just wanted to say thank you to uh to Jana and Becky and Bonnie for coming here and speaking today. I know how much Bonnie loves public speaking board, but u but thank you and hearing your story and really hearing the impact
of what that contribution makes to you and your family is huge. It puts it really puts a face and a story with the action that the board is about to take. So, um so thank you for sharing. I really appreciate it. It's always nice to see uh not to endorse the Halo thing was great. One one of my kids got a scholarship. So um I just wanted to say thank you to real quick. make sure we know McKenzie Wolf is joining us this evening. Miss Wolf is will be our new BBDA president for next year. So she's joining us. She watch the process and everything. So welcome. >> I've heard a lot about her. She's fidious and conscientious. >> She did she did host the Awards as well. >> You know what? You you kept
me entertained, Miss >> That's right. We hung on every word. Yes. >> I think though Mr. Shower was messing with you on some of his vocabulary that he used in his writings. >> Oh, Mr. Shower has some things coming. >> I would quiz shower on whether he knew what they meant. >> I don't. >> We have to make shower read out some kind of complicated science report. See how it does. >> I think that's a perfect idea. >> Something with the the uh period periodic table or >> Yeah, there you go. >> Exactly. >> Well, we're glad we're glad you're >> Thank you very everyone to know, you know, Mackenzie Wolf has been with Bear Valley forever and as a student, everything. So, it's exciting. She understands us and I think she's going to do
a great job. >> Congratulations. >> Okay. Um yeah, I went to the middle school um STEM and and open house last night. Um it was a great open house. Very welcoming. All the teachers, the rooms look nice. I mean, a lot of student work on display. Um, it was a really very nice evening with fire department and all of that went on as well. Um, and I just have to say this, okay? Um, this the steam part of it was a bit of a disappointment to me. I mean, I am a science guy. Anybody who knows me, um, I think science is exciting. It's fun. It's interesting. and it it it just didn't come across as as exciting, which is I would like to see the the steam night exciting. Um so I was a
little disappointed there. Um and I I I realized afterwards that we I robotics and so I asked Mr. Mr. Marquez. Um that apparently that program got >> it's it's shifted a little bit and so when I was there as principal we shifted and tried to because a lot of to create competition um a lot of the middle schools down the hill were using VEX. So we did purchase the VEX system a few which is a robotic system uh that's a more middle school based system. But in all honesty, what you when we're constantly switching sometimes I have to switch teachers around because all of our programs are based off of our teachers just what they're willing what what they can give and what extra they can give because all those things are extra um and
then with honestly with have to remember three principles in three years too for the school and then before that was co not excuses but that system had gone away and it's a matter of getting somebody trained and this we do have the equipment there we have to get a teacher willing to to go through the process to get trained in the VEX system because it does take a little bit to get that going. So that's something we need to revisit and ensure that we get that in place. >> Okay. Well, I would like to personally at least encourage the middle school to to try to bring that back. I thought it was a great program. It was great for the kids kids loved it and I mean if you want to go looking for a
career robotics is not a bad way to go. So >> and and Mr. Mr. Hassan still does the roof over work and those two pieces as well. You know, that's still a part of it that because he would flip-flop between the Rubber or the competition with the robotics. >> Maybe flip back. >> Maybe that's what I was thinking about. >> Oh, Rubber. Yeah. >> Okay. Moving on to item 12. Then just so everybody knows um this will be a series of public hearings that if someone wants to talk you have to speak quickly because if you don't talk quickly I will move on. Okay. Um and then then we'll consider it and then then we go on to another public. All right. So I will open the public hearing and comment on the certificated management
and classified management and class management confidential contract. Seeing none, we'll close the public hearing. And can I have a motion to approve the move? >> Sorry. >> All in favor sign I. >> I close. No. It's unanimous. >> So now we get to move to a public hearing and comment on the memorandum of understanding between the school district and the superintendent of schools who may be sitting over here. Anybody want to comment on that? Seeing none, we'll close the public hearing and got a motion to approve theou with our superintendent. So move >> second. All in favor? I >> I unanimous. Okay, moving on to item 13, certificated. Uh we have to open the public hearing on the tenative agreement between the Fair Valley School District and the certificated bargaining unit BA. Anyone want to
speak? I'll close the public hearing. Um, can I get a motion to approve the tenative agreement with the BBA? >> So, second. >> All in favor? >> I now get to move to 14. Husb personnel open a public hearing and and comment on the tend agreement between the PDC and the bargaining units. Anyone want to seeing none to close the public hearing? Do I have a motion to approve? So moved. Second. >> Thank you. >> I heard you. You can't make a motion in second. >> No. Someone said so moved over here. >> Oh, >> I did. >> Oh, you did. Okay. I'm sorry. Second. >> Did you get that? >> Sorry. >> Vote. All in favor? I >> oppose. No. It is unanimous again. Congratulations. >> Thank you guys very much. >> It's always
nice. I I want to second what what Mr. Carrick had to say um to resolve this amicably as as it should be and so thank you. >> Okay. Suggestions for future board meetings. We've got a lot of things coming up. >> Yeah, we have quite a few things coming. >> Yeah, we have >> you did the tent of agreement. did a and >> oh shoot. Okay. Sorry. >> Uh so member of an understanding between the the school district and the and the CSEA motion to approve. >> Second. All >> in favor? >> Oppose? No. It's unanimous. And we have another memorandum of understanding between Unified and CSEA. >> Why do we have Why do we have two? There's two separate one is a permanent increase to the hours of >> but they're both chapter 15
-4. >> That's a vote. Sorry. Okay. All right. >> That's a >> So moved. Second. >> All in favor? >> Post. No. >> Unanimous. Okay. Sorry about that. So
