One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> Well, we did this notice at the beginning of the meeting, but we will also repeat it here that Mrs. Heric is virtual and she's on the laptop to my Y. Item 11, um, action taken in close session. The first item was that conference was real property negotiated. There was no action taken. Um and on student personnel item 25-26-07, uh the student was expelled for the current semester and suspled with suspended expulsion for the following semester. Do we need to take that vote in possession? >> Oh, okay. I
make the motion. I'll second >> I >> Roberts >> I >> moving on to item 12 there's some donations. >> Yes sir. Uh this is from Lions Club is a donation of gift cards uh to support some of student services. I want to acknowledge that and we very much appreciate that. I believe it was a total of $50. the life club $50 gift cards for student services. >> Thank you. >> Yes. Okay. Hearing section 13, public comment. I do not have any cards. >> Okay. Moving on to the consent calendar. Does anyone like to remove any item from the consent calendar? >> I make a motion we approve. >> I'll second. I >> Robert. >> Hi, >> Smart. >> I Okay, there were no items moved except calendar. So, we'll move on to item 16,
employee announcements. >> Yes, sir. Have a few of them today. Got a few classified one certificated. Our first classified is the account clerk dispatch uh driver for at the transportation department, which is our own uh Lily Bel. Congratulations, LILY. UH BILLY began her dedicated service in 2021 as a classified substitute, quickly transitioning to an account technician in December of that same year. Lily has been an invaluable team member at the district office. Uh and while we her presence will be missed, we are thrilled that she will be a fantastic addition to the transportation department as an account clerk and dispatch upon retirement. That's what they left the vacancy Thomas retirement. Uh, but I know they interviewed and Sean is really excited to get Lily over there. I know he's absolutely pleased to have that. So,
congratulations. I think you're going to be wonderful over there. So, thank you very much. Appreciate all your hard work. >> That's exactly. Okay. Um, also a clerk typist and attendance clerk at BBMS, Dana Cisneros. Dana, >> it's okay. was so good on Dana. Dana is transitioning from her role as an instructional aid at Northshore this year to become the clerk typus attendance for Baker Middle School. We are excited to welcome her to the middle school staff where she's she her experience and commitment will be a tremendous asset. She's been wonderful and I know Dr. um Brit has nothing but wonderful things to say at Northshore. So, we're excited to have her at the middle school now. So, I know really excited about that. Thank you. Welcome her. Uh, clerk typus attendance foot for Big Bear
High School. Kimberly Hernandez. Kimberly Hernandez began her career with BB with Bear Valley School District in 2024 as a TK aid at Northshore. We are pleased that she will be continuing her professional growth with the district and she is eager to bring her dedication, enthusiasm to the high school team as a clerk typist attendance at Big Bear High School. Congratulations. On certificated, we have one certificated teacher once again, a special education teacher. We just keep adding those in. Special education teacher at Baldwin Lane Elementary School, Lauren Birdwell. I do believe Lauren is here. Lauren's journey in education has been guided through uh by both purpose and persistence. She has pursued and expanded her professional preparation by earning a special education credential as well as a multiple subject credential. Through experience in the educational field, she
has developed the skills necessary to support students with a wide range of academic, behavioral, communication, sensory, and functional needs. We are thrilled to have Lauren Lauren join our team here at Bear Valley Unified School District. Welcome, Lauren. Now, Lauren, you're going to make you stand up because you have guests with you if you can. >> I know. And you have to introduce your guests. >> Yes. Yeah. Sorry. This is my sister Caitlyn and then my mother. >> Both of them. My mom's been teaching for like 30 years. >> Really? >> 31. 30. >> We'll just say over. She works as an SLP. So, >> Oh, wow. What district? >> School District. >> And I'm in Ontario Montlair. >> Okay. >> And what do you teach? I teach TKK. >> Well, hats off to you. TKK,
SLP, and SPE. Those are all challenging. We thank you for all of that as a family. So, >> thank you very much, Lauren. Welcome. We're excited to have you. I know Lane is very excited. So, thank you. >> I'm very excited. Thank you. >> Thanks for making the >> Yeah, we really appreciate it's cooler up here. >> Happiness. >> It's exciting. It really is exciting. This is added position at Baldwin, so we're excited about it. Is that it? >> That's it. That's what I got, sir. >> Okay, we have to move on to 17A. That's superintendent's comment and calendar. >> Okay. Um, I went out to this morning was the every 15 minutes at Baker High School. Uh, once again, it's heart-wrenching and but it's impressive what is pulled off. And I wanted to thank
make sure we thank the what has to be communicated and organized between sheriff's department, between the fire department, between CSD um and the school itself with Hunter and everyone that put all the energy into it. It is absolutely impressive what gets pulled off. It's there's parents out there. There's always tears. It's a lot. Um for those of the audience don't know, you know, they create a whole basically a crash scene for a DUI and awareness towards the end of the year as kids have these might get into these kind of situations. How to ensure They're making good choices. Um, but it was impressive. I think what I what I'm noticing out there once again with Big Bear were unique. You know, the two CSD guys, Mr. Linquist and um, and partner, they were both big
high school students. One of them had experience, you know, watched himself and been a part of that. Hunter had been a part of his process as a student. You know, Mackenzie Wolf was out there helping and she had been a part of this process as a student. And I think it was impressive. Everyone knows how this is supposed to go and knows the importance of the day. And I think it was very powerful. tomorrow is even more powerful when we do another portion of it tomorrow within the site. So, congratulations to Big Bear High School, what they pulled off and to the community that came together. They shut down the streets and everything. Uh that what they did was impressive. So, congratulations for getting through that. I think it's a power they do it every
other year and it was a powerful message that was sent today and we thank them for putting that on. Um also just want to mention that, you know, we're getting into the end of year which is exciting. um all the events coming up. We have Northshore back to school night this week. I I know Northshore is I think that's the main event this week. Uh next week, next Friday I believe. Um Mr. Williams and I and Christian >> Thursday will be competing in the kickball game. So yes, we will be Yes, we'll be the I believe Miss Cox is joining us, the teachers from the high school. We will be the staff team competing against the students. >> Yes, we'll see how that goes. Jess, how does uh risk management happen? Just a workman's comp
thing waiting to happen. >> I think we should definitely film it to make sure comp. >> Yeah, we'll see how that goes. >> Maybe a waiver. >> We all have to sign waivers. >> We have all signed waivers. M >> is aware of the age of some of us that might be competing and we have all signed waivers according so we're excited about that. >> Mrs. Menddees won't be playing. >> No, Mrs. um but exciting event. So that's great. Really excited about that. But a lot of events coming up at the end of the year. The schools are all doing a great job trying to hold it together getting through testing. U most of the schools are pretty much finished. I know that you know um middle school's finishing up. I know that the elementary
schools and they've done a great job. Somebody was at 100% already. Mr. Paul was Balden Lane was at 100%. So hats off to them getting to 100% meaning all kids have been tested. As a principal I understand that's not an easy mark to hit. It is challenging. That means the kids have to show up to school um to be able to test them all. So that was impressive that they hit that mark this early because normally right now we're still doing a lot of makeup testing. So they hit their 100%. So it's great. >> Yeah, exactly. I think that's it for now. >> Okay. Government board member reports. >> Let me start cuz I want to talk about Falling Lane. I got out to their open house. It was pumping out there. The energy. I
love how they have all their artwork. That's my favorite thing every year, walking in and seeing all the artwork and all the awards. And then you go down the hallway and they have the children's museum, which isn't a children's museum, it's children who are the museum where they assume a character. Had a long chat with Teddy Roosevelt. He was too a former New Yorker. He had all the answers. Uh it's really neat to see the kids getting involved in in open house night over there. I also was able to see the US rowing team. If you don't know, um are the US rowing team is up here practicing on the lake in the mornings and working out here in Big Bear for the high altitude uh benefit of exercising up here. And they went and
spoke to uh students at the high school. And it was a Friday afternoon. It was 150 kids, end of a long week, and it was prom night. And I'm like, "This is going to be a disaster." And sure enough, not only did they hold their attention, but Manny and I looked at each other when they gave the mic to the kids, which always makes you scared. Here we go. Here we go. >> Unbelievable questions. >> I couldn't believe such good questions. >> They were asking questions about just their their their regimen, their diet, how they get to that point. Great. Not one poor. I mean, everything was so well done. >> It was the PE classes, which are >> Yeah, the conditioning. They really wanted to be able to talk to the athletes and they
wanted to encourage the athletes. That's why we chose six period conditioning for athletes at >> they brought one of their stationary rowers concept two and they showed one of the guys rowing who got a certain score and they said then at the end they said the crowd anyone who could beat the score will buy you a year of McDonald's. And then it really got happening out there where kids were coming down and they were so into it and the bell rang and anyone who didn't have to go stayed for a long time and talk to the athletes. It was really neat to walk around and listen to the conversations they were having with all of them. >> And mind you, one of those guys was 610. >> Yes. >> Wow. >> I was trying to
get Yes. >> How do they fit him on the boat? >> He's the other one was only a little bit Two of them were only a little bit shorter than him. I was trying to get Mr. Casino, go stand next to him. So, you know how I feel all the time, every game. >> That's right. >> So, I was talking to one of them. I heard the basketballs bounce. I'm like, this is kind of rude. They're playing basketball. I turned around. The kids wanted to see him dunk. So all the all the athletes were dunking because they're 66, 68, 610, one's a former college basketball player. So it was a really neat vibe and our kids not only had great questions, but I think they they did the district well with the interaction with them
afterwards. >> And I believe Friday that the Northshore and Baldwin will be joining them on Friday, I believe. And they're going to come up on the lake rowing on on the lake with them. So, we had to get special permission because they're only allowed to go to a certain point in the lake um when they row, but they get special permission from the water district to make sure you go past that point. So, you got to do their little assembly right there on the lake for I believe third and fourth graders. >> Yeah. Then they head around the world to go to Bulgaria and Italy and they're on their their tour is >> Yeah. Uh the Go ahead. Uh the third thing I want to mention is that the general uh surgeon general uh advisory
warning today about screen time. It's a rare thing that doctors, the American Academy of Pediatrics agrees with what the White House is saying. So, you know, it's got to be bad because they're agreeing on something. And the advisory links screen use to poor sleep and school performance, mental health issues like anxiety and depression, behavioral and social issues, substance abuse and de developmental disruptions, poor language, educational health outcomes follow early and frequent exposure to not only social media or phones but also tablets, computers, games, apps, and even television it reports. So their recommendation for children 6 to 18 are school children. Guess how many hours of screen time a day is their recommendation? >> Who said that? That is correct. >> Could you imagine any person between six and 18 only having two hours of screen
time? >> They they get that by do that as TV was a TV. So pairing down that much. I mean regardless of the guidelines, it's it's just more support not that we needed it as to uh you know future meetings and when we have our planning >> meeting on that too. The Mary bill unfortunately that one did not go through the Maruchi one was when they were trying to say no phones at all in schools for California. I think they put too many they went a little bit too far with some of the restrictions um and they're trying to but it's going to keep coming back to say no phones in schools at all. Yeah. >> How many states was it that already had that? >> It was Well, it was only a few right
now that said absolutely none. >> We can't bail the bell. >> You can't bring your your phone to school at all. >> No, there's only a couple that went back extreme. Um but but most of them most of them are just don't show it. Just don't have it out during the majority is not during instructional time in any way. Some are no all day. Uh there's only a couple this was only the one state so far that had uh punitive measures, fiscal punitive measures if you didn't comply. measures meaning they were going to ding you fiscally if they found that >> oh the school district would be ding >> yes >> what state that was >> it's like South Carolina >> yes it was it was >> you know you anything you want to say
>> no thank you for accommodating me with my my time my schedule >> no Good, >> Mr. Roberts. So, last I think it was last Friday or maybe the Friday before was the end of the year strings concert and there's a youth art show. There was a lot going on Monday. Um, and we had great student representation at the art show. It was cool. Um, uh, Andrew Wilson was there and then Jesse, uh, I forget what organization she's from. They put it on every year and it was I stopped by and checked it out and then went to the students concert at the pack and everyone knows Sharon Rosa does a great job with the kids, but most impressive was Caitlyn Aso. She did an amazing job um, with the younger kids. She's on board
as a full-time teacher, right? >> Yes. >> And goes from elementary school to elementary school providing music education. She just you can tell the the kids respect her because some of the kids in the crowd were getting a little rowdy. They weren't up playing. She just turned around and did this and they got quiet quickly. So, she commands the kids respect respect, which is a good thing. Um, and she just she she did an amazing job with the kids up there. So, it was because I think she is she is impressive. The teachers have really come to enjoy her first hard taking time out of the classroom to have her come in and hold kids and then it's just become such an appreciated time and she's become a trusted staff member and respected staff member
what she does is impressive. I went to high school with their dad up here. >> How long the music money >> top 28 top 28 >> ongoing at this point it's ongoing. I always say at this point because you never know new governor. You never know what's going to happen. >> Well, she's if it goes away, we got to find a way. >> Yeah, she certainly made her mark. >> Okay. Yeah, I've got nothing to report. So, moving on to 18, we've got the curriculum and instruction report, the Ball Hill Math Curriculum. We need to adopt it. Anything? Um, yeah, we have two adoptions up tonight. One is for the middle school level, one is for the high school level. Um, they piloted multiple programs, the high school over a couple years, the middle school
this year. Um, ultimately, they had a little bit different needs and honestly, there were a lot more options in the K8 realm than there were in the 912 realm. So that's why there's two separate adoptions. Um and we are also attached to that um which are not the McGraill but our our other publishers we have new a map adoption. So all of secondary maps will be seven for the next eight years. And just as a side note too when they were looking at this one of the things Mr. Williams you had to look with the teachers is were the curriculums too heavy and it kind of came in the last minute. Were they too heavy on electronic use? Was it where it was required for them to use a computer that was help make their
decision because one going we did not have as much required computer use. So just on that note knowing forward that there was involved things like that trying to pair down as we start our pairing down process our detoxing of technology. >> Yeah I did look at I did look at the high school math books and They're high school math books and they're pretty dry. It's going to I mean I was reminded of somebody said that um I think it was you actually that said that you could adopt whatever curriculum you want. It's the teacher that makes all the difference. And I think that's totally true. Um, all the material is there, but it takes a teacher to make it come alive and make it interesting and to hopefully have help kids understand not just how
to manipulate numbers but what it means and and how it work how make sense in life. Anyway, that was been a big focus and a big focus was also there's a new math framework in 2023 that came out. So, ensuring our curriculum was aligned with that. Uh, but that was ultimately the conversation the whole time. It's the magic happens with the expert in the room. This is just a tool that we're going to use. >> Yes. >> And I I think that was taken into consideration both levels. And I still admit that the AP calculus book isn't nearly as good as flip map regardless what you say about school. Um, I want I make a motion we approve the high school curriculum. >> Second. >> Folks, >> I need a second. >> Okay. Folks, >>
I >> Smart. >> I make a motion we approve the middle school. >> Second, >> Miss L. >> Board member Folks. >> Hi, >> Eric. >> Hi, >> Roberts. Smart. >> All right. Okay. Last item is future agenda items. Anybody have anything? I do. I don't know if it needs to go on the agenda or the weekly notes, but the uh semester just ended last week for uh Craft and San Valley College. So, I'm curious if you can get some of the data, Brian, like how many kids participated, how many units were taken, and you know, this were they all successful or you know, yeah, crafting gives us those transcripts usually a few weeks after the semester. I'll be able to get all that data for you. >> We're going to go through all that
at some point. Okay. >> Planning session planning session in June. Yes. Right. >> Okay. The meeting is adjourned at
