the curiness of your hair. >> We're like sitting here going >> I need a motion to adopt the agenda for this meeting. >> Second. >> All in favor? >> I unanimous. Okay. Please rise for a moment of silence and pledge of allegiance. Ready? Begin. I pledge algiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> It's amazing how it can be perfectly silent and one minute before the movie starts. Okay. Item four, public comment. I got two cards, so I have to go through this. Uh, first of all, on what we value, we value input in public. Welcome your comments. Please keep the following in mind. Each speaker will be allowed three minutes to speak
with a total 20 minutes allotted to this item. Please note that in the Brown Act, the board cannot take action on items not on the agenda unless specific conditions are met, such as an urgent matter or a need for immediate action. Public comments are an opportunity to share your views with the board, not to engage in a debate or question and answer session. Board members will not respond directly to individual comments during this period and will carefully consider your following. To maintain a respectful environment, please refrain from using offensive or discriminatory language. Personal attacks against individuals, including board members, staff, all members of the public are prohibited. These procedures are not designed to restrict public criticism of policies, procedures, programs or services of the district or the acts or missions of the governing board. So
with that, >> I know I only have three minutes, so I'll go fast. Um, I really appreciate you guys who are board members. I don't I don't know how you do it, but God bless you guys for doing this. So I'm not here to criticize you guys. Um, I went back and watched your December 10th board m meeting where you went through the policy of how you go through books because I didn't even know you had one. Um, and so this one I talked about last time is looking for Alaska. And it does only have a couple of sexual descriptions in it. And I noticed that you guys said that you wouldn't ban a book if it just had a couple of things in it. Um but I want to read I didn't write this.
This is uh from the author himself about his book and this is what he says about this book. Emotional depth g my portrayal of grief and the search for meaning in life as significant emotional depth to the narrative encouraging readers to reflect on their own lives and relationships. Right. And so the two main characters in here, Alaska is a young girl um who is the curviest, cutest, smartest girl in the school. And so Alaska sells cigarettes to kids in the school. She does pranks. And um she sets up the main character in this book with a a young girl named Laura to have um a sexual encounter. and then a day later she's having a sexual encounter with the same boy that she set up with another girl. So, um it's not exactly my um
granddaughter goes to the high school. This is a book she could read. I would not want her to be reading this book at the high school. Um, the second book by this is by Tony Morrison called The Bluest Eyes. And it's about an African-American girl, young girl who her mom calls ugly from the time she was born. Uh, and continues to degrade her own daughter. And her dad ends up raping her in the book. And he's also um, he had been raped himself. In the book, I put in markers where there were sexual, very explicit sexual things written in here. And so, this book had four of them. And um this is also a book that is available in the high school that I would not my want my granddaughter to be reading. And so,
one of the things you guys had said in your December board meeting, one of the guidelines is that a book would not be pornographic. Uh, this book is not only pornographic, but it's one of the most depressing books I've ever read. I mean, when you have a mom who calls you ugly all through the book and your dad rapes you, that's a pretty sad case. And, uh, the little girl who's in here, your heart just goes out to um, this book, I had to go for a hike for two hours to get undepressed from finishing the book. and I don't get depressed easily. So, I'd hate to see a young girl uh be reading this book and or either one of these books. So, uh my granddaughter is in high school. I'm not really happy
that these books are in the high school library. Thanks, >> Mr. Ball. Was that your not sir? >> Is that yours? Well, I'm not so impressed with some things with our school district and with our uh city council were there the other day at the famous GPAC meeting that still second part hasn't come online and they're very proud of it. I heard your uh bike story about the burning forest and you know what this environmental equity crab that this company's pushing from Sacramento is disgusting. You know I was up in um Yellowstone in 85 and there was just all kinds of garbage in the forest. That next year what 80% of the park burned up. millions of animals burned to death. I do care about pollution and other things like that, but that company is
full of it. It's all leftist progressive. I went to sac Sacramento already. I'm investigating every one of the five companies, every one of the people, and even other things they're doing. Here's some of the other things. I saw this about five years ago and I thought, what kind of idiot was doing this all gender crap? Well, guess what? It's one of our least favorite governors in the world next to the Minnesota governor. Mrs. Nuome, Jennifer Newsome is corrupt. And the stuff she's pushing through this state is unbelievable and through to through to the schools using her husband connections, the uh textbook thing discriminated throughout the state. This is corruption and this is going to be investigated. How dare some of these schools do this crap? Exactly what you're doing. Good job. because it gets to
be disgusting and pathetic. Oh, good. I still have two films. Um, so yeah, so all these pushing weird gender films and yeah, they are weird just like some of these books they're trying to get through. And then at the uh last council meeting they talked about an AB uh homelessness. What a bunch of garbage. This is going to be the seventh step of homelessness in California. And it's already well known that there's corruption through many counties in the state, especially Sacramento. All you have to do is look at San Francisco and Sacramento and it's disgusting. But they're trying to pass this bill. It's already had six decks. And they were trying to give it a support to the uh from uh the League of Cities, which isn't much better, and uh our city council pushing
on paper to support it. And I'm going, you how about putting in that letter to look at the corruption? Oh, no. No. As a matter of fact, our ex- mayor said, "Yeah, well, you know, we can't be concerned about what California is doing. There's money there, and we want that money." Even though this is step number seven, and I'm going to be writing up quite a bit of stuff about that. And that's just one aspect of what's going on. it. It's all corrupt nos, nonprofits. The city doesn't get the money. The nonprofits and and uh NOS's get to steal almost as much as they want. But yet our city council can say, "Well, I didn't do it. It was that NGO." But it's coming. JD Vance is coming and a wonderful attorney, uh, Herman Diller.
And there's going to be a big change and it's coming soon. Also, all you have to you don't have to look much past uh hospice. Look at that whole corrupt deal. It's just like Minnesota and the corruption there. >> Thank you. >> You're welcome. Next speaker is Bonnie Scher. Good evening. Um, I'm here just as an advocate for Mr. Hall and we part of just a group that is overseeing some things and we found some things within the district that we brought to your attention. I'm here to say that we when we found some of the books that we we had a question we did a study of them. We took them into the board and the board responded. The district responded. We asked for the removal of those books from the library. The district
responded that they were not going to remove the books. They moved a couple of them around. I think one was sent back and they were put in a um protected area at the high school. Not sure about the middle school, but I was at the high school today uh after watching the video that Mr. Williams uh well where he presented what the changes were at the library. And so we want to thank you for making the changes. And I did visit the high school library today. I met the the librarian. I visited Ashley Wilson and discussed how the books are protected, what happens when a student checks them out. She said she advises the student that of the content. I said, "What about guidance?" Because we were told this had literary value because many students
could be experiencing some of the things in this book. And Mr. Hall did say some of those things that are covered in that book regarding um rape and sex very sexually explicit activities also the use of recreational drugs in quite detail in some of those books wondering why is that literary value but if uh when I spoke with um Ashley Wilson I said what about guidance if somebody wants that book maybe you follow up and say is this something that you're concerned with maybe it's a it's an open door to help that student. So, we're looking for that. Um, I said we had asked that guidance be provided for students that might use the book finding it similar to their own experiences in keeping those books in a protected area. Students could be offered help
if it was determined necessary for them. I think for that reason maybe there's value. For any other reason, I think it's entertainment basically because I've looked through the books and I think it's entertainment. But as we watched, I also wanted to say as we watched the video of the board meeting, I was a little disappointed because there were some opposing views. I actually agreed with the opposing views. I don't think you should just ban books, but they did say that we were pursuing our own agenda and this is not the case. What I wanted to say is we're a group that's seeking to partner with the district. We're we're seeking to partner with the board in achieving excellent standards. And that's what this district has been in the past. a long time. This district is
excellent. I want to remain that way. And so we opened the subject to start the conversation about things that were not known by the district or the board and positive changes, thank you Mr. Williams, have been made. We plan to continue to monitor questionable materials, bring them to your attention, and we appreciate your cooperation and allowing us to partner with you. Thank you. >> Good job. Okay, last speaker is Robin Keer. >> Hi, I did the video and we really want to thank Mr. Bone and everybody who worked on that um that there are library book procedures written down here. They're very clear and an outline on what you guys expect for each category regarding the different school districts. So, I really thank you for that. this has been something we've been approaching you guys
for a long time now. So, thank you. And um so I also want to say I agree with I don't know who it was that mentioned that we're really lucky up in Big Bear to have such a good community and a good school where that we can meet um and have these conversations without getting all crazy. So, I really appreciate that and feel super blessed to live in Big Bear and have the opportunity to work with you guys and thank you for meeting with us initially and um I look forward to meeting with you again just keeping the conversation going on concerns that we have and I'm so thankful for the open door that we have with you. So, thank you. >> Thank you. All the cards I have. >> Okay. As you know, All
right. I'm not at liberty, as I said at the beginning, to to comment or question. Anyway, number five is a consent calendar motion or somebody want to move anything. >> I'll make the motion to approve. >> Any discussion? All in favor signify by saying I. >> I post no unanimous consent calendar. So, Mr. Marquez, employee announcements. >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. Okay, so we have two. Our first is a classified employee at Baldwin Lane new duty aid for Don Linker. I don't believe here, but uh Don has provided many years of dedicated service as a new duty aid in the Mount Diablo Unified School District and is excited to join the Balden Link team for her experience and skills with support staff and students. Welcome to Fair Valley. Welcome, Don. And next one, very exciting.
She is in the audience and we're all excited that she got this position. This is for our risk safety and attendance specialist that was vacated when um Raven took the promotion for which to be Jess's right hand. And we are very excited to welcome Christy Killian as our new risk safety and attendance specialist. We are excited to announce the promotion of Christy Killian. Christy has served as our student services clerk since October 2022 and has been an integral part of the district office team with a strong background in information technology and in and in depth knowledge of our student information system. Christy brings both expertise and efficiency to her work. Her kind and approachable personality makes her a valued colleague and collaborator. We are confident that Christy will continue to be a wonderful asset to
the district in her new role and we look forward to seeing the positive impact she will make. Um, we are really excited about Christie. Even when I was reminded, I forgot that during co Christy was our also our guest. Can you can you can you wrap it up in 30 seconds? >> You're addressing item 11. >> You told me announcements. >> This is employee announcements. I know this is >> number. >> We can be presumptive. Go >> ahead. We'll see. >> Actually started she actually started as a parent and then started as a she was a booster president for a while and she was also her first position I believe was with as our co liaison. >> Yeah, she came in as our co leaison that time managing all the testing and all those things
that were happening at the time. So, she's really kind of been through with some some tough times and some challenging times and we are really excited to have her especially back in the district office to be able to keep her there and we'll preemptively welcome this. >> Perhaps it's even better to go through all that and then we vote. >> Yeah, exactly. >> Then you have a reason to vote. Yes, >> we have a reason to vote. Yes. >> Okay. You have you're off again. AA superintendent comments and calendar. >> Sure. Just real quick. It was it um just have a busy week. You know, we've I was at the SSDA with Jess and with the small school district association last week and that was it was interesting with all the other small districts more
than anything that is a networking opportunity to talk to other superintendents for Jess to talk to other CBOS that have similar challenges that we have. Um it was a it was a good visit. Um I think what I got out of it was of course the conferences tend to be based off of AI right now. It's a lot of thing went out there, but it was interesting to hear everyone's take on it, how they're using it. And it's I was even sitting next to a guy, one of the guys was presenting. He was presenting on AI, but meanwhile, we're in another session with the AI and he was taking notes cuz things are so changing so fast. He goes, I got to go change my presentation. I didn't know that, you know. So, you know
that that they're all learning, everyone's learning from each other so fast and trying to keep up. It was interesting to be there. It was interesting. It was great to meet somebody. I got to meet a board member. I didn't realize from this room I was with them for 35 years. 35 year board member down was interesting and I admire that just like we have so many long-term. It was impressive and it's great to meet those kind of people and the guy that started SSDA the small school districts that has passion for small school districts was really fun. Um, also we've been able I was able to do be able to visit a lot of the different stakeholder groups right now, classified staffs, um, boosters, everybody. And I just it's it really is actually fun for
me to be able to go out and do that to explain budget to be able to be transparent about anything going on with the district to make those create those opportunities for everyone to ask even the challenging questions. It dispels a lot of myths and rumors and all those things that allows us to move forward and explain I should be able to any of my cabinet. Uh we always should be able to explain any decisions we make or why we're doing it or have conversations with community members and to be able to explain why we do things and it's a great opportunity and it creates I think it's really helping to create a greater transparency and trust with the district and within different stakeholders. Um the classified staff at Northshore was a great conversation. Um
and so was the Northshore um Eagle Boosters. I had a lot of some of those parents. It was great to talk to their perspective. Even with calendar changes and late start changes, all those different things coming into play. It was they've been wonderful conversations. Um I also know that everybody I think most people got to get to uh Griff's services. wanted to thank the the family just to give us the opportunity to say goodbye appropriately. I think that was the right thing to do and I'm glad we were able to they were used a facility that I think it was absolutely appropriate to do so and you know they did it outside and with the family but it was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate. I think the hard part about it was it's a unique
opportunity where all these people came together that would under any nor under normal circumstances not come together in that fashion. We looked at probably about 2,000 people. We believe at least 2,000 people or more. Judging by how many chairs we had out there that showed up at this event, it was phenomenal. Just the amount of people that came out to support this event was just a testimony. So, thank the whole community for coming out for a very very just a wonderful human being all together. It was great to see all those people come together. And of course, thank you Dr. Books for wearing your original jersey. We like to joke that Dr. folks has this jersey on from back but he played big football so it's impressive you still fit into it >> but otherwise
it was wonderful and I just wanted to thank the Griff the entire Griffith family for honoring us by having it there and allowing us that opportunity >> board member reports you good >> uh you know I just wanted to say as many of you I didn't see everybody But I'm sure that you were all there on Sunday for Coach Grip's um celebration of life. As as Mr. Mark says, it was beautifully done. Um so many speakers, everyone um spoke so so much from the heart and it was a wonderful tribute tribute to a wonderful man and perfect location, beautiful day to gather just not for the right reasons, but um but it was it was really a fitting tribute. So I was really happy to be Yeah, I I remember it's interesting that Mickey's here.
I remember being here in this room around 2006 when we were talking about putting the track and field in and AS6 was interested at the time and it never came to be. But I remember at that time there was someone from the high school who talked about coach Griff saying, "You don't understand the football coach we have. This guy's going to leave. You know, he needs better facilities. this guy could be coaching anywhere in California. He's that good from down the hill. And uh it was interesting because I didn't really meet him in person and get to know him the little that I did till years later. And uh you know, one of the first things we talked about was the field when it started to become to be a thing and it was going
to happen. And his excitement about it was super infectious. But the one thing he kept talking about when we talked about the track was about the kids. How it'd be great for the kids and great for this program and having PE out there and the kids are going to love it. And he really seemed to be a studentoriented guy. Uh and I I really appreciated that about him. And I also shared a story with someone else about um being in a CIF game with him. I think I mentioned last time down the hill. And uh you know seeing him after the team had lost in a CIF playoff game talk to the students was really motivational, really meaningful and you could just really get a sense of what a special guy he was. And you
know it was the week before uh you know week two weeks ago I was talking to someone at the high school about how great the field has been because you think of it as like a football field and then you go to a soccer game there and you go to a track and field game there and you start to realize like this is awesome. A lot of stuff happens here and um you know it was really unfortunate. I never thought that we'd be using him especially so soon uh for the reason we did this last weekend and uh uh for such a wonderful person. So I can't think of a better way to honor him being that he' been a biggest advocate for that track and field all along and that it finally got done
and I'm glad he got to see it uh see it come to fruition and see some football games there. >> Yeah, I don't have anything to add to that. Okay, moving on. 9A, the first reading and adoption of governing board policy updates. So move. >> Any discussion? >> All in favor signify by saying I >> oppose. No is unanimous. Okay. Item 10 A is a public hearing uh related to resolution 2526-013 which is approving the state board of education waiver on surplus property. as we formally open the public hearing. Does anybody here want to speak? I don't have any cards. Seeing none, we'll close the public hearing and move on to 10B. Resolution 252613 approving the state board of education waiver. I have a motion. >> So move. >> Second. Okay. >> All in favor?
I >> oppose. No. >> It is unanimous. Now we're getting to 11 A and after the rousing >> we may employ risk management and safety special. >> I make the motion we approve. >> I'll second. >> All in favor? I >> I unanimous. >> Okay. Item 12, suggestions for future meetings, future agendas.
