All players continue to do every we have 24 baseball players participating this year fielding both and the season is underway with both teams having placed four games so far both of all of our games are away so after spring break so we've had a lot of our new head coach of the program is Dallas with Ben as an assistant Rob Benson JBfield as South has been doing well with this season currently with a six to four record and starts play is currently leading the league in home run offensive. The Bears

We are continued our region of all we have started our financial literacy lessons through classroom and tomorrow we'll be presenting weekly discussions to help students gain motivation we have started assignments completed most assignments completed this week. She didn't put on 123 assignments with 11 weeks left in school. We are motivated to reach our goals. I have a couple questions. Nisha, so what's the deal with the medieval costumes? So decided [Music] so is his expectation that all the open mic when we talk open open mic it's like what the talent show used to be to be anything yes is he expecting it to be
all medieval oriented or he's just saying he wants people dressed that way he wants people dressed that way there will be a lot of contest okay wants to be a pain I think he does Do are you going to participate? Um, not sure yet. Jason, uh, competition. Is it like every student against each other or you got to start teams? Um, I mean, you can be nice, you can pay like I want to pay something for my friend, but Mr. Natik will tell you all about how to maximize capitalism in the competition. There's a lot of I remember last year before I really went to I love it. I love it. And then so we got two very different books. All Fire on the Western Front and Holes. Does the teacher choose the books or
do you guys choose the books? Um I think well last time we read all of the Western Front. She chose that but he chose you guys must have read before that. This is the second I've read the book and I've seen the movie. Yeah. I wish they didn't make the movie. I like the book stand alone. I mean, it's a good movie, but that's I I've seen the movie before, so I kind of I don't know which one's obviously better. Yeah. Yeah, that's cool. I have a question. Nisha, what is the date? Um, you mentioned air rock. Has that changed or is that still the same date? Is it the that weekend of Thanks, Nisha. Yeah, Nisha. Well, he's looking at me. Shea. Um, so is it still the weekend of as of right now,
Memorial Day? We might be changing it, but as I was just curious, I'm still trying to get my um staff back here on board. They were all on board to do it at the beginning of the year, but now as it's coming closer, a little bit fierc, you know, district office has never participated before. Uh, so we're just want to make sure [Music] board members are welcome to perform with us. We're judging. Always judging. So, we're going to uh get into the more like nuts and bolts of the meeting. If you guys have homework to do, you're welcome to drive safe and stuff. Thank you guys. Thanks, guys. Hunter, you can't leave. Sorry. You don't work enough. Oh. Thank you guys. Thanks guys. All right. I got eight reported action taken. Um we're in close
session. We're actually adjourning close session until after we're done with the regular meeting. So um we do only have one thing to report which is student personnel item 2425-26. the unanimous decision to expel a student with um conditions for remendments. All right, next hearing section. I have three speaking cards. Um I have to read the script, so bear with me. And I've got a cough. Uh we will now open the public comment period of our meeting. President invites anyone wishing to address the governing board on any item that is within the subject matter jurisdiction of the governing board to do so at this time. We value your input and welcome your comments. Please keep the following guidelines in mind during this portion of excuse me one. Each speaker will be allotted three minutes to speak

Personnel personal attacks against individuals, including board members, staff or members of the public are prohibited. These procedures are not designed to restrict public criticism, policies, procedures, programs or services of the district for the act. All right. So, first, uh, Robin Wayne, I
can't read the last name. Oh, I'm sorry. Can I go first before her? Okay, President Bonnie Schaefer it is. Um, good evening everyone. It's a pleasure to be here and I really feel honored to be able to come. Um, we were I was here a few months ago and I requested again. Thank you very much for providing what we're talk about but we're here tonight. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. We we requested a copy of the library books that are school districts. And this is because I was um in this conference with Karen England who's president of the parent president of the parent rights council of the of the capital research institute. Capital Research Institute has been working hard in California to um analyze the books that are in school systems and
they have found some report pornographic material in the books that are in our libraries. So I requested the uh this and sent them to me and we had good forms team and we analyzed all of them and we found um not several first of all I'm going to read a piece here because it tells what we can stand on if books need to be removed from the libraries according to capital research institute it says 43 states have passed obscenity exception exemp exemption laws that eliminate any liability associated with using graphic materials if they're employed for educational purposes as part of course of instruction or if they are in the libraries K through 12. However, this ruling does not give the state guard laws to expose miners to pornographic pervasively bulk material. books and other materials
may be removed based on whether they meet an agree upon standard of educational suitability or whether the books are simply deemed pervasive. So we looked at it through those eyes to see if they were um a standard of educational suitability and some of the content we we deemed between our team that they u repres are represented as pervasively vulgar. What we've done is put together a packet and I have a packet for each of you tonight with some of the content of those books. So, we're not just coming to complain, but we you can see it for yourself. We got five packets there and for our superintendent, we have packet for you as well if you like. Um, in 2022, there was a poll done by the Rasome report and they concluded that 89% of
those pled were opposed to sexually explicit books in elementary school libraries. The same poll showed 79% of those polls were opposed to sexually explicit books in middle school libraries. Anyway, we're requesting removal of the books on this list because they seem to be not. Thank you. All right. And Robin. Yes. Hi, my name to go over the list of books that we're concerned about all four schools here and um I want to thank you for your time today really important subject um like Bonnie I'm here about some concerning books in our school library but first I want to say please we are that you know books of concern in elementary schools you don't want to at all so that was fantastic however there are several books of concern in the middle and high liaries. The
book that I'm going to focus on today is called the middle school and high school. Some of you might already familiar because according to the American library looking for Alaska was the fourth most book between 2010 and 2018. So therefore I brought with you today a copy for each of you um so that you can have it's just uh the people that Bonnie was talking about. It's just their summarization and review of just the pages of concern and they're highlighting for you. It's very simple to very simple to go through and so I make one just an example of this particular book and when you go through it I'm sure people understand why I don't want to mention anything in this book from this table because I would be too embarrassed and I think it
would be entirely inappropriate already shared there's a little concern high school. One book that I have a lot of concerns about is called The Lovely Bones by Alice Se. This book is on the middle school library book list. It's not it has not been reviewed by this organization yet, so I do not have a summary for you of it, but I was able to find some information about it online. And just a few of the things that it says about that It's a violent disturbing read. There's dismemberment of a 14y old girl multiple murders that narrated by a I would really like more time to review that a little bit more but that one and another author Lori Pauly Anderson the author of speak which gave you just a snippet from that book here. She
also has 14 books in the middle school library. Can I go on just another minute? Not a minute, but you can check. In conclusion, I hope that you'll take the time going through the hand for Alaska and consider putting this topic into the agenda for future school board meeting. I really look forward to I have names for everybody on here and I didn't realize Mr. Superintendent was going to be here. So mine says Robin's Thank you very much. All right, Bobby. You'll have to excuse me because I am talking to you. I can hear myself talk and I had surgery on my eardrums a week ago and I couldn't care the wonderful presentations women made and I had talked to you Kathy a long time ago about my concern and um a lot of work
has gone into that but as a result of last week's uh grizzly and they had that full article on on what you're all dealing as far as finances and all of that and um it kind of spurred me because um it's challenging but the real issue is so why aren't our kids getting educated you know so I thought I'd start looking at what's at the state level I've done a lot of research and reading and do we have um the uh local accountability group here functioning. It must be Yes. Yes, we have the local account. That's our I was wondering are because parents are supposed to be involved in community now. Is it only parents that can be involved in inviting to you? No. In fact, you're welcome to come on the 9th. We have
we actually have a meeting on the 9th. Oh, okay. In the evening. And if you want, I can make sure you get that information. We'll put it on our website on the 9th as far as what the LCAP that we're looking for community and parent input on the LCAP as far as how we spend money within our district and we have a meeting and that's actually that's a perfect opportunity for I I was going to offer you 352 and 49 and all of those looking at what's involved in in the state legislation and it all seems to be thing and it reminded me I was when I was in college, I was a political science major and grassroots politics was my my thing and I remember then that there were things that were starting and
it seemed to be a real focus on um Marxism, communism, all of those isms. So very quickly this kind of thing that was going on now so subtly in our state in the nation reminded me I had talked to a professor and I said are these people really serious about what they're talking about you know what they would like to do in perspective and he said you know I hate to tell you but in 20 years those people that are in your class are going to get their bachelor's degrees and maybe their PhDs and they're going to get into positions to change everything around. You're not going to believe it. He said maybe 20 years. And I didn't believe it. But when I started reading all this stuff, it reminded me of that because there's
a certain theme in everything. A certain theme. And that doesn't happen by accident. And I'm concerned about our kids. My my son is here. We had good teachers and the curriculum was different. And um I don't know when he would be now if it wasn't that things were different then and I was aware of stuff going on but anyway my went off next No one wants to discuss. There's no items removed. Um employee announcements. Yes, sir. Which I suspect is why Amy's Yes. Amy's our new superintendent. Congratulations. Congratulations. Um I'm sorry. Uh, so it's it's always exciting when we get to um announce our previous higher high school graduate. I love that. Uh, so what we have is we have Patrick Sheer. Is I'm saying it right? Patrick Shear. Yeah. Yeah. Patrick Shear is our
will be our new uh lead mechanic. Patrick graduated high school and has been a mechanic for over 10 years. Uh we have no doubt that his expertise will be a great addition to our transportation team and keeping our buses safe and keeping us on the road. I think that's an exciting find. I know that when they interviewed him, they were really excited. Jess was really excited. I know that um Sean, our new transportation manager over there, they're really excited about bringing him to the board. And he's actually coming aboard to a great team over there with Sean in charge and Christine and everyone that's been added to that team has been a little bit of change, but it's such a positive place to be. We're excited you're going to be a part of that. So,
thanks, Mr. Marquez. Uh I didn't realize when I voted for it, I think Patrick owes me a few assignments from sixth grade still. Wow. It inval I knew he was about that tall. Yeah. Big long hair. You've been around a long time. Now I have two of my former students in the same room. It's so cool. It's so cool to see you work at the things. It's funny until you realize what you're thinking is how old you are. So congratulations, Patrick. It's awesome that you're working with us. Well, welcome. Thank you. That's really exciting. Um, our next one is, uh, special education aid, Deborah Plun. Uh, Deborah Cle. Uh, Deborah began as a classified substitute earlier this year and she has primarily worked in the special day classes um, and has built a strong group
before students. So, we're excited to have her as those are positions are so excited to have her as an A at W. Excellent. You get to roll in. I get to roll. Right. This is the next thing. Okay. So, Um, couple things. One, the just want to make sure I know I put it in the notes, but you know, for public and everyone else, we put the mural up on the high school now because one of our finishing things with having the field there is when we look to the exciting things about being that field there, it's on our campus at bigger high school. We got the mural put up that says, you know, um, home of the bears. And I think that was something that everyone really wanted. It was really exciting to see
when you drive by there and you're driving by down like it's really exciting to see. and it's I'm love make sure we get lights on it and everything, but I think that's a nice move. I just it warms my heart every time I drive by it now. So, thank you to everybody that made that happen. It it really came out nice. Uh one thing as we're talking about beautifification of these schools and trying to make the the outside of the school better. It was brought to the board before as far as we had that funding of the 250,000 that received, you know, the roundabout and started that roundabout land, right? It's it's a little weird to get used to with those trees removed. I'm still struggling with it. Okay, it's hard. It's hard for tree
lovers and everything. It's hard for us in Baker to those lose trees. It's a little heartbreaking. I get it. Um, but you know, we had we had that land swap, you know, we kept the 250,000. We had originally the board had originally put it towards putting the playground into making sure it went to Northshore with that money and put it playgrounded. Well, we had because of funding and ELO, we realized, okay, it was more useful for us to because of how that playground will be used to be able to use ELO funding. So, the funding switch that now that 000 is back on the table as far as how we do that and what we do with the funding for it that that with that money that really should be you know I know the
board had discussed that before last year with going something towards more um we'd like to put it on as a as a discussion what we do with that money as far as the just throw some ideas out the board we had some ideas of our own as far as we talked to Craig and Jess and I as far as what we can do with it there's a few different things we talked about beautifification of the front of the front and it's expensive putting in the whe whether it's artificial grass and some of those areas that just keep dying in the front of the school putting up little walls putting up different areas and also one of the things we like to take into the board take into consideration is we've always discussed the fencing around
where the orchard is around Northshore and Craig this is one of Craig's brilliant idea I love that he thinks like this as far as what's good for students is to fence that in and making we're doing a a wall, a solid wall so that it's privacy. Um, and that it could be more of a learning area in there and that we do remove possibly some of those little orchard trees, but some of them are kind of dying anyway and create an area in there that can be an outside classroom and that's truly protected and it creates a wall even over there where they had the pat area that's been there for quite some about eight years now. and putting a wall in and really creating that area to be part of the school. And it
creates a safer environment that those teachers with those outside doors can now open their doors in the heat because we we keep them closed because those doors have to stay closed to keep the kids safe from the outside world cuz those doors open. Those four classrooms that are there, they open them up, they're exposed to the outside world. So, we've always had them close and it really helps open the heat. So, putting a wall up might be an option, too. and really try to develop that area into an outside learning just like consideration on that. Nothing has to be decided this evening, but if we can take start taking in consideration what we might want to do with that and if you'd like us to bring something back to the board with those two being
those two options of maybe the grass, maybe the wall, that's the first thing that came to our mind that would help the school. What's just one of the board's goals as far as beautifification of some of the sites and still create a learning area for students, an outdoor learning. So, that was that would just and just as we could probably bring those to the board as far as suggestions because that's going to be a chunk of money that would have to be approved by the board. Um and as we talk about the ELO option um just becoming going before the board probably in the next board we will also be the the ELO funding you know that the ELO for the CRA is our after school learning program things like that as far as the
funding we get from the state that has to be spent for after school things that that funding that has to be spent by a target date. One of the things we'd like to do is improve the playgrounds which are used for after school. And on that those playgrounds, one of the things we can do within the timeline that it's a long-term effect for the for the for all for both elementary schools. This only impacts really primarily elementary schools is to update and modernize our our playgrounds. Replacing one playground at Baldwin, one of their I believe it's the kinder playground. Thank you. A kinder playground at Baldwin. and then putting in the soft rubber like we did at the the recent Northshore uh playground for the in the special education area that was recently done. And
basically so only one playground will be replaced but then putting in the rubberized um footings on basically all of our playgrounds and that would we have that funding available that has to be spent by a certain date and we'd like to be able to bring that before the board at our next board meeting for approval to be able to make that purchase. Um and be able to ensure those funds are spent by the June 30th deadline. And it would be something that makes it safer for the schools, has a long-term impact for us, um is way better for the kids because those things, the wood chips, the current wood chips we had is really old. You see at the parks, all the parks now have that safer padding on the on board. It would make
it safer. So that way all the all of our playgrounds would have a similar right. So that probably the board for the next one. Otherwise, I think I would like I would like I'm glad that they brought up the ALCAP because we do have the meeting make sure it's on the website that we're going to have a notification go out to all all families that on the 9th is is we have to have an annual ALCAP meeting where we do involve community and and people and we we go through what is our LCAP priorities just like we did with the board and we go through the LCAP priorities and what we're spending the way we do it just so community knows we split you guys up and we put in rooms and go through the
four different goals of the ALCAP goals go through the alap meeting with what's under these goals and how money is spent. So we invite anybody who would like to attend. We always like to encourage you know future presidents people like that and then u the all the cabinets there and the principles are who kind of present in one room each section and that way there's going to be a small discussion and we do like 15minute rounds of everyone going so they have an opportunity to look and really kind of tear up and we actually encourage students to go too. Um like I know Jess will be there and I told please bring your daughter because we love student input. Student input is fun too when they get student input should be part of them. I
had I did the same presentation for our student uh advisory at the high school. They had some great school. I think that's it. All right. Next section is board member reports but you guys don't have to stay. Good to see you. Congratulations. All right. Uh, governing board member. Okay. All right. Item 14, administrative report, first reading and adoption of governing board policy. So move second. All in favor? Um the uh discussion regarding board policy and administrative regulation 141 healthcare and emergencies. That's one that I ask. Do you want to move in a second or you want to discuss? Let's move in a second. I'll move discuss um for the healthcare emergencies as far as how we respond. But so it was brought to my attention by a a parent that it was inconsistent that sometimes
call a parent and sometimes you call 911. And the parent that their kid was significantly injured, they called the parent rather than 911. And it was 20 minutes by the time the parent got to the field. and there was already negative effects of the injury. It was like I think a broken paper. Um so the parent asked that I bring it up to discuss it and I thought it was a good idea that if we we should have a set policy what what the procedure is for the administrators to do all administrators know depending on and that's just it. We're not medical professionals to make that call. And usually the procedure is that we're supposed to call 911. We feel like usually we have the health come down healthy come down do a quick assessment
of what we have on hand as far as our health and the principal or the administration when it's something to that extent. Um I think there was with that incident you're discussing I think there was there's confusion because the school felt like they did call. So there was some confusion there. Um, but the policy really should be the fact that we do call it because we feel like it's something that should be moved. We have no depending on the severity of it, but we don't know that either. And even when I talked to the uh fire department on it, I talked to the fire chief. He's like, "No, just call us." Because the reality is is the reason why there was sometimes that there may have ever been a reluctance to call because we've often
had parents get upset with us for calling because what happens is a parent can incur a bill or they can incur a bill. Now, if we're calling the parent, say, so let's see if me as an administrator, if I'm if I would have already called 911 at the same time, usually I'm saying, "Okay, we're calling 911." Secretary call parent, get the parent in here as they call 911, right? Usually, they all start to arrive at the same time. The parent, if the parents there, the parent still has right of refusal. That's why we're trying to make sure we're trying to make sure all of our new administrators, administrators coming in because this has been a confusing point in the past and they it was nice to have the clarification and we just recently had this
clarification from the the fire department that they do have the right of refusal to say no we don't want our child we're going to take our child and they don't there's not being involved because some people are concerned about insurance about a current cost that's a family's personal issue. What we're trying to make clear to everybody is that we need to make sure yes we do call and that but it's a matter where that policy is put in place if we want to include it on this something different have a board policy on it that we that that was my thought is that the administrators if they're getting hassled by by parents they can fall back on that it's a board policy call 911 then simultaneously call the parent and they can deal with that,
but then they can the the administrator can hang their hat on. No, it's our policy. We call 911 and have the child. It's a matter of what are once again not medical professional, but what are we calling then get to what are we calling 911 on? Are we calling that on every head injury? Are we calling it on every perceived sprain or broken bone? Some kids level of pain is different than anything else. That means I I have a kid screaming on the field and maybe he stubbed his toe and we don't know and we've been there before. We have a a first grader who can't who is so distraught that he can't tell me exactly what his pain is. I'm calling 911 when it could have been instead of his toe. It's a that
the wearer is out of line. And then we're in that board policy, we have to come up with we're going to have to be a little bit of medical professionals all of a sudden and decide what is it that we're giving them the parameters to call them. What is it that But right now there's nothing exactly and and it's become a problem. So we would have to that's just it. We'd have to figure out what is it that we're telling them to call 911. We're going to put in a board policy. What is it we're telling the call 911 for? Not to resolve it all here, but I think it would be important to say whose discretion is at to call 911. And it should be in the parent handbook that in case of an
emergency, the discretion is at, you know, emergency services might be called at the discretion of whomever, whether it be a classroom, teacher, administrator, whatever. And that, you know, the liability for charges might be incurred because of that type of thing. Yeah. Yeah, cuz us as a district, we got to be way way way leaning towards better safety. Sorry. Yes. Even if it's a subject. Yeah. Even if it's something that is going to incur charges to any party whatsoever. I mean, that's our number one thing is student safety. I think we got to do some research on that with um I'm sure this is the first district that's missing maybe look at some other policy on that and maybe talk to Britney a little bit to our district nurse and see what it is we can
come up with that is a little bit more defined for to support our administrators. um and the fact that there shouldn't be any question of what they call 911 on but let me understand the second part of it. So they called 911 at one with at the school for an incident and then they called the parent. They called the parent first. The parent arrived except why didn't you call 911? Right. Right. And once again, why should the discussion the parent works out in the field in the community, had to drive truck into the yard and personal vehicle and all that took 20 minutes by the time he gets there and the fire department still had not arrived or and it sounded like from what the told me hadn't even been called at that point. So
you were saying you felt like they were called the present and honestly the the site has a different side to that right and I understand that but I can tell you 20 minutes that's not a normal response time it's not and I understand that and that's why that's what the discrepancies after the site felt like they did Paul before and there's there's a discrepancy there and it should probably also say who's whoever's responsible at the scene or whatever, you need to make it their responsibility. It's their responsibility to make sure that both 911 and the parent can call when that happens. I thought that perhaps 911 was called the parent. And it's usually just by I mean there's not a policy on it, but anytime I've seen a death, it's usually um nurse or whoever's
on scene is calling 911. Me or secretary, someone like that is calling the parent right away getting trying to do it simultaneously. on the phone at the same time is usually the process in which we would go through what happened on that one. I'm not sure unless we have full investigation. Uh but we can what we'll talk about here is uh Miss Drake will talk to Britney and we'll kind of discuss discussing cabinet and see what policy other ways we can put in place on some directive if there's anyone else out there who has done them while we reinvent the wheel and let's see what else is out there to put that in place and also talking to if we have to talk to employers like that to see what's so good that doesn't hold
us. My understanding was the barrier to calling 911 immediately was some instances where parents did this because the costs they would incur that and I want to remove that barrier for the administrator. Okay, understood. Okay, good goal. Yeah, to remove them that way there's no question on what they do and this is a this is the policy we have in place. Okay, thank you. Uh 15 curriculum instruction report Unified School District Summer School the summer school that's just for the summer school. So, um sorry. Um so summer school will be uh held at the elementary school uh will be held at Nor Elementary for both elementary school sites as long as well as middle school and high school.
