have that covering it just appreciation for octane Diamond share with you and hopefully this has been official in some form and really appreciate just the side note all the hard work this team fits together I think we're we're very lowest in this meeting to have not only the five board members that reset your Mustang jobs that supports that it's a it's a wonderful school district and where we feel blessed but Colleen and I feel blessed to up in Florida um all the board members did respond to the uh survey and so every every response was compiled and Bob will be presenting and talking about today and please jump in at any time and I did at the very open and informative and hopefully at the end there will be an action plan that you can

develop that will help you move forward uh as far as the PowerPoint we can jump right in there with the board policy report by about 9400 has stated up on the screen and in front of you that uh annually I I read this it doesn't sound like it is absolutely required but strongly encouraged and I think this history has done a very good job of doing that on an annual basis I see a lot of value in coming together and looking at where we've been and where you want to go and I've always found that that has been valuable and I think a key bullet point there is any discussion the board of self-evaluation should be conducted and uh Open Session and then the last bullet again developing some form of action the results we

give us and helping you move forward the next slide this uh with this board started using this in 2016 is the my understanding of first year of this horn was used and just as a side note that there is going to be at some point of this overview presentation there's going to be a great reveal so um so I'm giving Point time that will uh will come out so we'll see timing wise when that is the most approached you know it just woke me up the seven indicators of success this came from the scoreboard Bill Burke and I think I don't know what to keep from the csda a minute and that was the result to get the support so it shows the uses check these there are seven indicators of success and then within

those indicators there's the 30 standards that are divided between the seven uh what I put here is how the rating of each indicator came out the draw indicator so the first one will live your mission uh Vision Values and goals that was the seventh ranking indicator uh up to seven so uh last year that was number six so I'm not a tremendous change uh number two building collaborative culture through shared leadership uh it was great we see the number two ranking last year it was number two so and he made you say three have data driven decision making and I know with my involvement with this team over the years that's a sequence to have been a challenge and struggle and a lot of discussion taking place about it what time today and how is

it being used and visibly used effectively in those kinds of Health discussions but uh that was six the rain last year was number seven um the fourth a line board responsibilities and behaviors with school district goals and actions that was the highest ranking last year was number four number five build system accountability at all levels uh that was ranked high for third with the next one but last year was number one and six communicate at all levels had a as I stated and last year it was ranked number three and then the Senate the focus on stakeholder parents do the teacher Community satisfaction um added number five or 19th and last year it was ranked number five as well so I I see some consistencies and how the board is feeling about the ranking areas

overall the gold standards uh received I think a very strong ranking at 4.34 that's out of five a possible five and uh then last year it was 3.96 out of five so seeing an increase in 2020 um during he was a four overall was 4.44 a little bit of the weed from Bob there next Slide the pandemic yes post pandemic uh those are just some things that came out of uh discussions uh over the last couple of years okay a lot of Focus has taken place on the pandemic and rightfully so yeah some some time adaptives depending on what's going on it becomes a refocus or a challenge to stay focused on what some of the higher priorities you may want to be looking at um I don't know exactly where the district is in

these ideas I know last year too and I didn't use this as a bullet point there was some discussion about a administrative succession plan that's right if there has been a discussion or plans on that we talked about how even some of the best laid plans don't always come to fruition in the example that I gave us I've been Pelletier being a very young strong administrator in the game Super didn't we thought that Allen would probably be here for 20-25 years and uh so um but Larry Mary Samaria is going to say five more jobs that's what I heard my contract expires 2024. well that could be changed but anyway another thing was uh there was some discussion about some concern about this evaluation form of sometimes it seems as I would call it as

a skeptical discussion was that it seems like there's some we've had it with us and uh is it exactly the same kind of form that you want to continue using and what do other school districts or School boards use for their protocols or evaluation I I don't know if you have anybody no I can I did check with other districts most of theirs are not quite the extensiveness of ours with all the numerical there are maybe 20 questions right um and usually they cover these areas though they do cover the key areas that we're covering but I can send those out in the project if you want to look at those for consideration for next year the one thing I really liked though and I know it's a lot is that it was interesting to

watch the comparisons over the years and to watch where we are at 2022 even compared to 2021 and 20 right when I looked at these um because it really showed the board kind of growing together between 21 and 22 even with all of that really major challenges that abort needed to face during that time so but I'm definitely open if anyone wants to bring some of those other ones forward more than open if you want to I know that we've changed this one a few times too where we've Consolidated pieces um that the protocol kind of reminds me I get the gentleman's name sorry but I think this is my second year it's been superintendent we were having um the annual evaluation and it started we started at 1pm it started snowing and uh the

gentleman was uh I like myself and the elderly gentleman it was uh sort of Orchestra units for us and he had his back to the snowflakes but he kept turning him around and the process was going to take maybe three hours and I think it was an hour the conclusion was well you know you're all experienced you've been together so I think you guys know what you need to be looking at kind of what oh okay that was very helpful that's not the snow made me think of that that's not the big reveal yeah darn it uh any other comments on this page uh any thoughts from anyone yeah but I think it's worth pursuing like you said to continue to look for you know like a lot of meetings are so such a high

volume of stuff that we deal with um you know trying to remember to look at other districts and try to find something that might be more suitable for us I know we got stuff from Lucerne and other places but I was a superintendent's valuation that we got that one but for the self-evaluations I'd be more than happy to poke around you know I went down to csba to ask around as far as what other people do and see if there's something that other people have done that might be worth a try and I can send out the cspa it was an update one when I looked as well yeah the the post-pandemic we update the organizational chart every single year so that one's been updated um it's interesting because when we look at the data

for strategic decision making the dashboard we decided we're doing quarterly so that's coming back November 16th but even when we look at it as a Cabinet we say is this is is data helping Drive instruction for our students so that we're increasing or what data are we collecting to show what what is the data actually doing um and so I look at what the teachers what data the teachers are using to see how we're making sure that's going to change the instruction for our students especially with some of our our students you know we have different gaps in different places so the data for the board is very different than the data for the classroom right but looking at our dashboard we decided to do that quarterly and now when I look at the benchmarks

that the teachers say are the most effective for quarterly for example those have changed and so we use I ready which shows for the second through on second through fifth and with those it shows where are they in Mastery of the grade level standard for the whole year so they may be here we may be just at the beginning of the year but it's showing the teachers but I don't know if it's showing the board but the board wants to see where our biggest thing is we want the teachers field to have data that they think is the most effective um I don't know if that matches what the board wants to see or not because our goal is not to add extra data for our staff but to make sure that the staff's getting

the data they need to change instruction the way that they need to change it so I think that that's always a discussion to see we can explain what the data we're collecting is but is it effective for the board or not one of the other things I looked at in the discussion with somebody said well we need to have data to measure the portrait of a graduate and all of those are pretty much mindsets and pieces right some of it we have data for and some of it we don't so that was a statement I thought overarching so that'll be a discussion when we get to it may not pull out the portrait of a graduate we can look at it together but there's so much other data we're collecting then also the discussion has

to be on how are we instructing and supporting our students with learning right that's the biggest discussion is what data is effective for teachers to drive in structure and for us as a district to make decisions so and not everybody agrees on America when they say everybody from instructional staff to multiple perspectives yes different perspectives but there's also an overlap you know and that's what's interesting is trying to Define what a board evaluation really is is it based on is the performance that we are expecting happening or is it the superintendent's evaluation because the superintendent is doing their job we base that on our goals being achieved we therefore she has a good evaluation than in the aspect of we're talking if it's going to come down to student performance and what's actually happening at

our schools you know our our evaluation would would be consistent with what yours is or is the board evaluation more about you know uh to what extent is it about our particular board behaviors and how we work we work as a group versus outcomes you know of our goals because when I see that the evaluation of the outcomes of our goals is our superintendent evaluation you know one of the things that Mary gave us this year for the superintendent evaluation which was really helpful I mean we come in again to meetings and you know not being our 24 7 job we've had all kinds of I mean the amount of information that you have to process and remember and understand you know when you fill out a document a lot of it depends on the

mood you're in at the time what happened in the meeting the night before and that all sways how you fill out your your your document um but at the end of the day uh you know what it really comes down to is uh you know as far as the superintendent's evaluation is uh you know the performance it seems like the performance of our goal is moving forward so I don't know if this is more an evaluation of ourselves and how we operate or to a certain extent should also be about you know are our goals being are we failing at something and our goal is not being received and accomplished well Paula I I think he had his nail on the head and my perspective and experience that's what I always felt was a challenge

but how do I align all these is it more important to me to get a positive evaluation forget all of a sudden it's a superintendent to forget all this other stuff I can uh again that's not the great reveal but uh it uh it keeping those things aligned so they're all working together and uh they don't always easily interact with each other and it is some separation on this well if that was the case anyone could use a job right right but it's a tough job and for those reasons yeah because it's not easy yeah you're being taught in many different directions not the that any of them are bad it's just there's different uh goals and perspectives from groups but but when you're working so and that that's the Japanese okay I guess what

I'm saying thinking about is the ultimate goal not that other goals aren't important but the ultimate goal is that the superintendent's accomplishing what we want um and uh successfully then the board's done its job that doesn't mean that there aren't other things that we can do better at but you know I think that's that's all it's not the big reveals Steve thought saw it snowing again wait I mean to what extent is it about our yeah I mean and you raise a really good point I mean are we here to talk about District goals or are we here to talk about how we're interacting among ourselves and with the superintendent right okay and to a lesser extent with the rest of the staff um and that's a pretty easy question at least for me right

I mean I think this board is I mean yeah we fill out all this stuff and I I think it's it's worthwhile to stop and think about data and to think about you know all the things that are in that gold standing but the bottom line is how are we working together okay and I think we're working together pretty well I mean personally I'd say bedroom pretty well okay I mean and that you know Jack is the newest on the board and let me be totally honest I was concerned when you were elected and you have totally dispelled all of my concerns you've been a major asset to the board bringing a different perspective yeah Dad kids in the district yeah okay I would also more than that I also agree that he's dispelled some

of my concerns and the rest of us have been been around for quite a while and hopefully we'll stay away um and you know we're working with Mary since 16 okay um and our relationship I think um and the processes that we have in place for the one-on-ones and and and the the weekly notes and all that it just works and so if if that's the focus of this meeting and it probably should be um I'm good well I there's such a high degree of trust in Mary and and the rest of the staff but Mary at the helm um that it makes our job like easier I think are there things that we can improve we're getting back to the analytics that Mary was talking about you know it helps us make decisions you

know are are we is I ready the right indicator for are they what we care about is are getting successful and if at the end of the year but you guys better not mess up this election because this would be a very different meeting if anything happens I just don't want to get there the you know a perfect example was last night's meeting you know I had someone contact me afterwards and say night and day from what's been going on at city council and that's not City council's fault right yeah that's some individual's fault in my opinion um you know and the functionality of it our meetings are actually enjoyable you know and I think if you're functional they are enjoyable in no way shape or form you know I think we're all self-reflected too

and I think a lot of us probably have a component to us that the last thing we ever want to be is a Yes Man um you know someone mentioned to me it's it's that you know your meetings are short and you get these things real quickly I'm like that's because we're so functional you know we follow the protocols that we talked about if we have questions we go to them and have them answered first and so that so that they don't turn into a huge discussion that's not uh conscientious to people's time um that might not be productive you know um yes mutual respect for each other but also that we've set goals and we've all agreed to those goals you know that's what I thought about when I thought about city council if

everyone agrees to the goals you don't have to have arguments and discussions because you're all does achieve that goal and if you have a good superintendent who brings forth a plan that achieves that goal you don't have to have a long discussion a long discussion was in our goal setting meeting so between the goal setting and US understanding our roles or hey if you have questions you go to the superintendent uh you know you do your research before the meeting you look at the agenda so you can have those questions answered before you come to a meeting then you know to me it's all these years on the board I'm like oh this is how it's supposed to work you know and if everyone knows those rules which all of us in my opinion do

the protocols you know when you first get on the board I wrote my I saw protocols oh board's been shipped and now I realize especially you know seeing the opposite of what can happen is that uh you know they're important and when they're in place it makes it not only more functional and more beneficial for the students but also more enjoyable and that's kind of the place that I see we're at I mean last night's meeting we talked about we had great student Representatives coming in here we honor coaches the Griffiths you know 39 years combined coaching in the district we talked about the field project that's going in and we talked about everyone's super excited about our dual enrollment classes at the high school we're going to be able to take concurrent classes to

San Bernardino County Community College where they'll get high school credit and college credit during the school day you know these are goals that we talked about when Nancy Wright was here you know they're finally getting accomplished and we're actually accomplishing great things and uh you know I think a big part of that's our board a good example of that though is of what you said earlier I bombarded Mary and Lisa weiner with questions about that yeah and I think it's better yeah to do it before in instead of litigating it in front of public right you know that's why one of the things I loved is you know I invited Jack to the board of gender meetings uh you know right off the bat so that he can ask those questions and I can ask

those questions and he can see what kind of questions I ask and even more beneficial I see the questions that he's asking as a parent about stuff and it opens my mind and we get to bombard them in there and hopefully anticipate all the questions everyone else is going to ask before it even comes in here so that they have the answers in it have addressed them so I know that that's one practice that I really enjoy and to me it takes the place of my one-on-one meeting yes it's a little bit longer but I think that when we get together with Sue and Mary and the two of us and then regularly calling him Lisa and and uh and Linda and Lucinda that overall you know it's shorter than one-on-one meetings plus of agenda

and I think it's way more because Jack will come up with ideas that I didn't think of and I'll come up with things that Jack didn't think of and I think that's a great practice especially with the newborn person um so you can have someone in there who's experienced help that board person kind of learn learn the ropes protocols I think that's one of the biggest things that cabinet really appreciates about the board is that they ask questions they're great about and I think that that was a perfect example when Jackson they're like seven questions yesterday and they were great questions and a lot of times those questions even cause us to think further okay what else do we need to do and and it makes us think even further so I watch those questions

because they come from all of you all of you are really great at asking questions that push us further and it pushes us in a direction that makes a difference for students it doesn't push us in a Direction that's chaotic it pushes us in a direction it says and I think some of the questions for example were what if a student doesn't have that third period of time are they still able to take these dual enrollment classes and sign up through the school so that they still get that course but then take it at another time and and then what about these other classes that we would really like to see are they going to be offered so even if there's maybe 20 classes offered what about these other classes well San Bernardino be able

to provide those so they were all questions that I'm sure the community's asking too and they were great for us to be able to research quickly and see what other types of things and then so we appreciate all of you asked questions that are in different areas that make a Major Impact for us so I think we appreciate that you trust us to ask us the questions ahead of time and I think that all of our cabinet is really good about they don't ever take questions personally they know that it's always about what's going to help our kids but you know be better so the only pause I have about that is it's almost like we should re-ask the question to show when people that are watching that makes sense there's that's one of the

things that I've heard there's people in the audience or I think that should understand it you know I've had other board members say it and they didn't you know that but yeah I knew that but they needed to know that type of thing you know during The Question so I think that's important that's another big thing that I want to give a lot of credit especially to Kathy for is a year ago today we had a very interesting meeting that was unprecedented and was very difficult and she did also and she she did she did awesome as far as keeping things as under control as possible and you know I think that was a big moment where we actually probably grew closer because we've been through that and realized how much we can rely on

each other when when the pressure's on so uh you know that's that's another thing that I'm really proud of is is how we handled that situation it was a perfect techno but there's no one who could go into a situation like that and do every single thing right you know we thought about it we reflected we came up with plans the plans that we came up with might not have been perfect but you know we have done our best job to have the public be part of our meetings in a productive way and we'll continue to do that regardless of how much we agree or for us to think as one board members regardless of how much I agree or disagree with someone um but the priority being that we have productive meetings and not

meetings that turn into a circus as as something that uh we've been fairly successful doing it so um I know where you live I thought I think well for me well I think what you're saying too really does make for more efficient um meetings yeah you may have those and say well you guys are rubber stamps or whatever but uh compared to the other side from the questions asked and you have staff looking at each other uh hey we'll get back to you on that and that makes the staff look like they're not prepared and that's not the intended the question at all so it really uh over the years I I found that to be so helpful and beneficial and I mean good solid meetings I I think that that raises the word leads

to an important point I mean I mean I ask questions of some regularity as well um and my assumption and for the most part I believe that assumption has been proven truth is I mean if I have questions about the first interim okay I get I can make sure I get them to Linda before the presentation and nine times out of ten or nine and a half times that again whatever um those questions get incorporated into her presentation yeah okay I was about to say that that most of the questions I ask either Lisa or Dr Suzuki answered them as an incorporated in what she presented last night right and that's to me that's the goal of asking questions early you're giving the staff a heads up hey they you know they can find the

answer if they don't know it but it comes out during the meeting anyway so I don't think there's a reason to ask the question again like during the meeting when it's kind of just it happens and I think it's happening and it's working well outside sometimes so if it's if it's if it isn't Incorporated yeah yeah yes or if it's baked right some of the questions yesterday other parents may have had those same questions too so I think and repeating this question I I think that it was we can go either way I mean if the question is asked again and it's brought out I think that either way works for everyone yeah and I was thinking before Rhonda said that that there were some questions last night that Lisa didn't know the answer to

and the relative Comfort at which she said I don't know I'll find out I mean there's a lot of years I've been on the board but there have been a look of embarrassment and you know and I think that's the trust and it's okay one of my favorite uh little stories of the conference was that guy Ken Robinson who has the most watched Ted talk about education he talked about there was a big panel of people like Bill Gates and this and that the Dalai Lama and they asked the question and all these guys answered and it came to the Dalai Lama and he sat quietly for like a minute and a half and everyone's looking at him and leans forward and says I don't know you know and it's like it's okay you know

we don't expect you to know everything I mean if people understood that the Sugarloaf Forum I explained the school district how big of an operation this is we have the largest transportation company in the valley largest Food Service Company in the valley they're the largest Parks and Rec company in the valley you can be taken care of probably pretty much the most square footage in acreage in the valley are up there you know and on top of that we have to educate and you know make sure that kids are safe you know and it's like you can't possibly know and then you have Ed code and policies you can't possibly know the answer to every little question about everything it's an unrealistic expectation your trust is the key word right right one thing I did

want to mention though is um that has come up a lot and I know we do what we can do and I don't know if there's a silver bullet is communication with the public um you know that constantly comes up like I mentioned the Sugarloaf homeowners association if you have an app we have a Facebook page you send out text messages if you have emails we have do we send our text messages we have school messenger uh but it reminds me of during the fire if you went to the thing when the fire guys were at the there was somebody said how do we get information and everyone turned around like how do you not get information on this but there's a percentage in the community that still feels like we're not communicating and I'll

tell you in a weird angle at this after the Forum at the pack someone came up to me and I was talking about oh we've done this and I said why don't you guys talk about that right like why don't you talk about all this good stuff that you're doing the only time I heard it was here tonight you know and I don't know to what extent we should be doing that or could be doing that or I haven't I had lunch with someone that told me the exact same thing that you should do a better job of talking about the good and and the discussion I had with them was you know I my career in the military it's horrible about advertising the good that's done right right whether it be for Hurricane support

or whatever um but when something bad happens it's you know yeah kind of end of the world so how do we communicate for this school district the good well on the opposite side of that spectrum is misinformation right so this is the first time in the four times actually it's my fifth time running for office so I wasn't elected the first time that there's flat out misinformation I mean flat out factual misinformation that is being spread you know and I'm not trying to I am not projecting anything about I'm just saying it's flat out wrong when someone says you don't pay your super specialized teacher woman someone says they got rid of RSP when we have RSP teachers when someone says um you know we're doing IEP you're not doing IEPs which I advocated with

an IEP yeah I mean it's like what's our responsibility and is it beneficial to somehow explain to the public or put somewhere you know what what the truths are versus the rumors or is that a net negative at the end of the day for some reason because these days that's just going to create the next Wormhole you know that's what it is it's a wormhole um I uh Steve wants to say something okay I mean yeah you're right it's the age we live in I know yeah I mean it's not just true of Big Bear it's true of the world I believe um and so I don't know what you do I know it's an easy answer there I I print great stuff that's going on in the district and my webs on on Facebook

now and I just kind of straight off Facebook I'm not a fan um obviously it's it's like science I'm not a fan but it's obviously something that you know is crucial during uh election time so I go on there during election time and um you know you post beneficial things and you know you get all these negatives in response and you can literally spend the whole day replying to them and it's just the next thing the next thing the next thing but you know I don't know the answers to that you know up to the negative part maybe it's just focusing on the positive part and getting the positive out there but even then you have to look and see what kind of responses that positivity is carry and people do say um oh I

didn't know about that I think that Joel enrollment will be a big one okay you know about how else do we give out to the general public to know right or does somebody who is just coming into our district because if you really have to over communicate and cabinet has talked a lot about that is we have to really make sure we're over communicating and saying it multiple ways multiple times and even then don't be that time but I think that's a big part of it is that are we saying enough about what we are doing yeah well an example of something that's very positive is the college the Google enrollment that should be plaster everywhere even on the Marquee are you aware of dual enrollment everywhere yeah the the word has got to get

out because it's it's it's a good thing but it'll drive more questions hey what if I can't do a third period hey that's a good question maybe we shouldn't be advertising this only for third period maybe a fact sheet too can I tell you some of those questions that were asked we can put it there actually what if I can't take it during third period what if I also Spirits are full can I do it at home I mean a lot of those are but a lot of the messages whether it be that or you know pick one should be almost to the point that they're annoyed right that okay I got it dude stop so that's two things I was going to mention is then there's over communicating I skip a lot of emails

from my son's school you know and I've missed important stuff because there's so many that come about from fundraising to you know it just goes on and on and on it's hard to find that balance I mean if you're gonna air I'd probably hear on on overdoing it but I would imagine we haven't had the newspaper present I would imagine that with the new editors and I know they're always been short staffed on uh on reporters that sometimes they like to not have to chase the story and have a story come to them you know I the person I was talking about you must answer the Forum says why don't you have a Pio one of my customer school districts you know a lot of them do them yeah I know I know the bigger

ones you know and I'm not suggesting we have one but you know to have someone who can reach out to the grizzly and say hey we're doing this great new thing and let people know and we probably can talk to someone's radio station I don't know how that fits into fits into things but they're comfortable illustration is a our oldest daughter is that death and she said that they it some people that complain about God you've said so many reminders uh why do you sensors and I'm sitting there thinking man I love it when I get them reminders for a dental appointment or whatever because this slips out so there's again both sides of that piece right and when come in I want to make on the protocol asking questions early to me that was

always a strong indicator of board members be prepared we get this stuff out and you know it's a lot of work and so when questions are being asked to me that was hey it's great people the board is looking at what we're presenting and they want to know the right information and so on so that's another project aspect I think there's a and I think there's a balance to that because as you commented that people will say you you rush through things so quickly no one's asking any questions you're just approving whatever you know the consent calendar or whatever it is we're talking about because I should point out we've already had the questions answered so what is the balance and so that the public can realize that we're not just saying okay okay okay

we've already been through the process we've asked the questions we've gotten our questions answered and this is the final product of all that um that we're voting on and I I think that the public and our families and students they just don't see that part of it and that's common for all boards I mean that's not just the war but well and I think that's the people that run through boards or haven't worked on boards they don't understand that concept and they may come in with perspective I've got a unload a ton of questions at a meeting which hopefully it uh those individuals who learn the process that's not the way it works most efficiently but again those are all those variables that you deal with on public laws it depends on the motivation of

the board members exact for a large extent exactly along the lines questions could get abusive to staff too and I I don't think I am but I hope not but um I think Mary would help us but but that's happening at other agencies in the valley where the board members are asking so many questions and maybe not even relevant um that it's abusive to the staff's time okay and that has to go with the motivation yeah exactly well I always I think of our award or really all boards we should represent different you know really the internal public so we all come in with our own different opinions about things but not a well-functioning board at the end of the day will gather all of that information debate those different you know nuances of the

questions the perspectives that we have and come with come up with a you know a consensus that works and I think that's really the functioning of a of a healthy board because we are here to represent the public but at the end of the day we're also here to get work done within you know whatever limitations that we might have before we'll be able to do or not do but we can still openly discuss our opinion about things and then come to day and even if it's not a consensus it's an amicable solution um and it's it's critical and I think this board has been pretty good at it um that even if you're a no Vote or at least a well-okay vote okay that the next vote isn't well I'm upset and so I'm

going to vote no on this or I'm going to be I mean you you know he discussed it if we come to a consensus that's great if there is a dissenter or two um you you accept it and you move on right and you don't carry that into well the well you're going to vote against that then I'm going to vote I mean those are when boards are really dysfunctional right again fortunately I we have I've not seen any of that that sounds like Congress that sounds like Congress yeah you know recently I and you brought some food I'm actually supported recently I have had several parents tell me oh we need more parents on the board and there's an argument for that but I think you hit the nail on the head that the

board should represent the entire Community not just parents parents obviously have a vested interest I'm a parent we have four kids in the school but when your kids grow up and graduate you don't lose interest in this public agency well not only that but you know even if you don't have a child put you up with a child who's in there I mean the number of parents that I interact with on a weekly basis between parties social events I mean the senior class is JD's class you know I grew up we grew up with them for eight years my wife was a teacher with some of these kids a lot of my former students have students now and you're constantly running into them and you know they're sharing their concerns and their questions with you

and there's nothing like being a parent I've learned from Jack to find out a lot of immediate concerns with your poor children in the district and I think being a parent is a definite plus but would I rather have a parent who is going to be dysfunctional on the board and stop all progress or someone who uh to the contrary is going to be a good board member who is going to do their homework and work as a team and not necessarily be a parent I think the latter is better than the former so yeah I think it's definitely a check and a pro column to be a parent but I think there's a lot more that goes into a being a board member and I know that people have cited statistics about some organization

and parents on the board and I think you look at the community our community is so small you can't help but run into parents all the time if you're in San Diego unified it might make more sense to have parents who are more attention you go to the grocery store you're talking to parents you're talking to former students who are parents I go to a Halloween party and the whole time is hey what's this doing enrollment thing what's going on with track you know oh my student has happened in their classroom I mean we just don't escape it here in a good way you know you can't get away from feedback you're always tilted account yeah yeah and you're always held accountable when you go in you know it's like I go to meetings and

people ask me on mass and you know and the nice thing about that is you can kind of clear the air a little bit with those people you know to undo some some claims that have been made that just aren't true so well but you also because they're communities so small you might have a vocal crowd it's the vocal minority I think that's probably typical to most communities yeah but what what people are doing is coming to the board meeting yelling and shouting you know certainly a year ago they're not representative of everyone's feelings and we run into people at the grocery store or you know drop off pick up pick up for school and we get the feedback I don't know that means but there's a I think it's almost Nationwide there's a sense

these days in education of parent rights okay the parents deserve to have I mean it's focused in my opinion somewhat in the wrong direction they're concerned about critical race Theory or they're concerned about things that aren't in my opinion real they're not in this District um but there is that sense of parents have to get control of the school and I'm not exactly sure where it came from but I I I I believe it's out there and there's certainly a segment of our community that feels that uh they were listened to on the mask issue that that they were adamantly opposed to mask and why didn't we listen to that and the you know the the vaccination issue which is you know I think we handled all that as well as could be handled quite

frankly um and and I think Kathy was the significant part of that so thank you um but that it's just the times again okay and um some people are going to think yeah Schoolboy should be all parents right yeah I I think though that there's been proof in some school districts certainly not this one that people have tried to push an agenda that is unsettling and and but that's not him yeah Congress but you know I'm a parent of minority children in the school district I concerned about things that that maybe other parents aren't or think are imaginary but we came from Fairfax County Public Schools it's very affluent but they have problems right now with pushing stuff that maybe they shouldn't and we move from there to here and our kids you know my

kid that has an IEP has had to the best in in elementary school I'll say and have the absolute best not care but teaching and Care by the the students I mean or by the teachers and they went from he became much more functional because of bonio angelier and um Cameo Draper and that's what you want with IEP right exactly but I went from one of the most affluent school districts in the country with an IEP to hear and this is where he made the progress I'm not saying that progress has continued to soar by any means but um could everything can be better yeah of course and I think with the parent choice buzzword that's out there to me that's what it's become as a buzzword is parent choice or whatever this group of

parents who say in parent choice salons in reality there's a bunch of other parents out there whose choice is a lot different so I mean that's just something to keep in mind of course parents rights I mean parents rights they absolutely have rights and should have rights and they should Express what rights are important to them to their board and like Jack said sometimes they'll come here to express it then you go home and you have a bunch of phone calls and one of the people the next day saying I feel the total opposite of what those people said last night um and it's along the lines of this happened the other day on a different topic at a different agency where someone stood up and was very passionate um which turned into a little

bit out of hand about an issue and they kept uh yelling at the person saying you're not listening to me and it was very reminiscent the the definition of you're not listening to me is you're not agreeing with what I said um because it was obvious with the person's response to them that they had listened because they wouldn't have they couldn't have responded that had they not heard that question so they respond to the question and it's you're not listening to me so listening has become the new word for uh you know you're not doing what I want you to do you know like so I mean it's it's like a whole new vocabulary Within These days that you have to understand you know parents rights don't mean parents rights it means this group of

parents and what they think's rights there's other groups of parents who want different rights and you know when people are speaking if you don't agree with them then you're going to be accused of not listening to you um but I guarantee you and I would have seen the rest of the board you've done a lot of listening you know and that doesn't necessarily mean that that I'm going to agree or not going to agree with you but you know listening is totally exclusionary to whether I agree with you or don't disagree with it what else yeah a great discussion yeah um I have one issue that I do want to at least discuss at some point I don't know if this is the right time or not I mean I'll leave with me if you

want to do you have something that you want to do or no I'm just going through uh actually the whole PowerPoint is to elicit continuation and understanding and discussion whatever so you know publicly I this is a board level concern and it's to do with the stadium okay I want to raise this issue so I can get feedback from the rest of the board um I asked to see the plans okay because I just wanted to see what we were actually building okay and that that that elicited an interesting response okay um and I've got to look at them um and the the idea of having a committee and all that kind of went away because it didn't seem like it was going to be a workable idea but after spending a day I spent

probably eight hours studying those plans um and I sat down with Mary and went this is what I see okay and that's all I really wanted to do okay I wanted to help um and I have some experience studying okay so it was not really a board member job but I really wanted that project to go well okay that was my only motivation okay um and I looked at the plans and I had some some suggestions and some concerns and I gave them to just Mary um and I then met with Terry okay the concept was you know talk to Terry so I spent probably an hour going through the place and Terry had put signing some of the same things that I had seen and there were some things that he hadn't said and

so we had a really good discussion it pretty much changed my relationship with Terry to be quite honest with you um changed it in the good one in the good ones yeah and a good one um and and I hope that it maybe changed his his view of me a little bit and since then okay okay he's called me okay um several times to say oh hey um you know Hellas is doing this or we're doing this you know what do you think um and that's not really my role as this co-work member um and I try to remember that I'm only one board member I'm not giving I'm not speaking for the board in any way but he's not asking the board he's asking you right well yeah I mean it lasts well what

I'm concerned about is you said last night so you talk to me about the sprinklers okay and that wasn't on I mean obviously there did nothing to do but I didn't even catch him say that oh you didn't oh well maybe I won't really sensitive but I just wanted to give feedback on the board that my objective is to is to help Terry with these big projects okay and I built multiple million dollar things okay I you know I've I've done a lot of stuff in that regard and I do sometimes see things that maybe the average person doesn't and it's so second nature to me after 30 years of doing it that I don't realize it but anyway I just wanted to put it out there that I am it's a weird I mean

I own right now I'm only responding to Terry's requests I'm not doing anything else um but I bet he's glad to have you I believe that's the case so I just wanted to make sure that the board was coming forward I would love to hear since we're paying him so much to be here today Mr Petey's opinion on on that well and can I get one thing before with the opinion I think that in that case um Steve and I talked I also talked with Terry to see what Terry would be comfortable with because Steve has questions that none of us would even think of because we don't have that expertise to ask those questions Terry said I'd be happy to meet with Steve and just talk to him about anything anything that's going to

be bored change or board directed comes back to the board so when Steve and Steve interior meeting and we set really clear boundaries with it we said Steve has a great deal of insight and knowledge that I don't have Linda doesn't care because we have not had that type of career right and so and Terry who made your chair knows you're the the director you're the leader of this this program right um and that their dialogue would be dialogue back and forth but then as far as anything that was going to be changed or even any suggestions would be brought to the board and um and I'd ask Terry on several occasions you know how are you feeling about it I think he feels very similar to how Steve's feeling about it is I'm here

to help I'm not here to to pick right and so I think that setting those boundaries to make sure that it's the board that's going to make the final decision it seems to be working to me very well but um now please feel free to jump in but it's a great question I bet three projects where actually the board assigned one of the board members that had more interest in whatever the project was not more interested a lot of interest and expertise and so the board uh elected to a point that board member to committee the project with the understanding they're not the ultimate that person not the ultimate decision maker it goes back to exactly what Dr Suzuki was saying that keeping them informed and I really I felt very comfortable with it as

a superintendent because I felt like okay we have this person here and it's not just uh over on you didn't tell us or you should have told us or those kind of conversations so two of the three worked out really well one just uh assume more responsibility than have been given to them and they understand and it it ended up creating some some challenging times but two of the three times and the third one started out great but then pretty soon it just kind of snowballed and the communication wasn't taking place back to the board so that's the critical part of it in my opinion called it how the arrangement is made and what your country zone is is the critical piece of it so I think the Telltale sign is what Steve just did

is you're conscientious of what your role is and you're constantly saying am I crossing a lot right once you lose a vision of that then it becomes a problem so exactly well to to respond to what you put out there my because my position is it makes me feel better about the project exactly four projects with your input right you have the expertise so I could it makes yeah it makes me feel more comfortable in I think you are conscientious to not cross the line I'm working real hard at that because I do I am very sensitive to that um so thank you I appreciate that um and I will do my best to say um to watch the batteries and I think the relationship with Terry seems to be right at the appropriate level

at least from my perspective um and you know let's just have to see how it goes right I think that also with Terry reporting out I think it was you Jeff you said well no let's still have him report out every month or something even if we didn't have the pricing for the one project that you've been talking about that I think having him report out also then brings back he even mentioned different things that you guys had discussed right so I think that those are I felt it was really healthy too well I wanted to make sure the board was comfortable that's because because they just I mean when you read all these gold standards and all that knowing the boundary is is an important one my personal experience with this District when I

first got elected okay dealing with with a different totally different Administration was the opposite okay I mean and it and I believe in retrospect and talking with Linda a little bit of um not naming any names but there was no trust at all on my side I didn't trust them and they didn't trust me and it spiraled into disaster I mean and canopy with no um and in the end they left okay um and we got married Aunt Linda okay and so please anyway so I know how it can go wrong and maybe I could have handled that better in retrospect I probably could have well maybe not because the outcome was We Got Married it wasn't well yeah when my go-to is okay here's here's my opinion the key okay when I went to

a member of the staff and said I would like to see this document you know I was told no you can't look at it okay and it's called the budget okay and it was like what I mean I was incredulous I couldn't believe that they were saying no um and when I went what do you mean I can't see you and I was like well we've had experiences in the past where the where the board has just gotten down in the weeds and so no I'm not gonna take us down that road again okay and so [Music] swing of a board that was too involved and gangnam came in who it's funny it's it's like it's a theme of life where the pendulum keeps swinging where you know Kagan brought it back and swung it

the other way but I learned so much from The Swinging the other way you know if it was me as a board member I stay out of way more stuff than I used to get involved and I understand you know it's like we hired the superintendent to do the job if we don't trust them we get a new one you know but that doesn't mean bring the pendulum back to the middle that when you ask for a budget document you should get a budget documents you know but it swung so far because I was thinking when you were talking about that I know exactly what Kenya can say if it seems sitting there going Steve that's not your responsibility you shouldn't get involved at all even if you're going to be a benefit it would

be a greater good to the district for you to stay out of it and have 10 million dollars of mistakes on this project because that's that that's just the Integrity report I'm exaggerating but I've learned it was to that extent where you don't get it all you know and I think because of the trust now like you said you know I'm totally comfortable with it yeah well I think that Terry would say if it was skinny I think Terry would come to me and say Mary I I you tell him I would encourage him well and I believe he would because I think that um Tara is also very comfortable himself with the project and he has questions it's just like he's not a timid guy no he's not he would say well this is

way over the line and I think that Kim because we've known each other so long cabinet will tell us when people are having different feelings so um principles would be principles are new now so I think principles um telling us even for us as a cabinet because we want the principal to be the site leader right there's always those boundaries at every point of what are you effective in supporting or when am I even as a superintendent micromanaging a site because I need to give the site leader some autonomy to be the leader right so I think that all of those are trust issues of where what level and I think that the succession plan I think will be very successful because this board is a board that really trusts each other and has been

a board that really has supported and trusted Administration so even as things go down the road and people are moving to wherever I think that you'll see I think that this is a district that people will want to be at so because people always look and say how long is the Boardman how long was the superintendent there if you have a superintendent who's there for a year or two and then another for two or three or three or four gay people whoa wow that's a lot of turnovers the board of difficult board to work with that's always one of the first questions people ask and I think that anybody who's out there would say this is a great board to work with I think anybody in the well I would think the majority in between

you could see that I guess we have some people who you know think in different ways but I know our staff thinks that this is an amazing board to work with and afford that they really do trust there's no question for the top level in any government organization if there's not trust you can't be functional I mean at an other organization that I was involved with would be nameless um behind the a wonderful person okay didn't apply for a job because of what you just said right but that's true or was dysfunctional and I didn't want to go there and later did come here because the board changed the politically um and I mean it's true so I heard of an assistant superintendent who was offered a superintendent job that they didn't take oh yes

that was yes and I ended up in an awesome District they're here do you want to take a break five minutes one final thing before we take the break I think we touched on not see not only is it the trust it is an important valuation sample evaluation but not only is it developing the trust amount of this group but it has to extend to staff as well because the staff isn't seen it it isn't the going to work real smooth so yeah it's all in common sense all right fine okay yes okay so what are we up okay uh the strengths and I just uh again there were 30 of these standards and I just picked the top three and this is the first time that the top 30 12 usually there's just one

that has the 5.0 rating and uh there were three standards that had the 5.0 uh number one rating so the critical one is the 2v 46 is in a partnership um everybody's house very strong about that and then what's been come out in your discussions 4C if you reach the census by The Narrative issues and then uh 6G I think all three of those are very you're going to have a 5.0 rating those three would be the three that you would really want to to decide up here then the next slide is the areas of growth the uh I just put the 29th and 30th ranking because there were some ties at both ends between certain standards that the 3.4 1C most of the board's energy is spent on strategic priorities um some challenges there

and then 3.2 was the lowest ranking what would be like well I mean before you leave the 1C I mean I I look really low and that's not because we don't want to it's the I mean things happen right right exactly I mean and we're just forced to respond to those things that may not be our strategic priorities but they have to be addressed um so I I don't view that this is an area for growth uh certainly but sometimes you got to do what you got to do we did go up from 2.83 though right the year before to 3.4 is that right it was tremendous growth in that area um for us is important well I think covert like Dr folks said it's an awareness yeah but it's I know uh you see

when I come into work I had my day laid out and he walked in the door and guess what things changed dramatically and all of a sudden the highest whatever he didn't even get addressed that day various things and with that well it was 2020 when number dropped from 2019 to a 4.3 to a three point s so I think what would be good is if you could join me probably no blaming why don't we go which one would you like the look at we can go through the chief that you responded to with the comments so on that real quick there's one thing I recently asked for and Sue found that it's easy to do and that's add each of the items on our agenda in their staff report how it relates to our

strategic goals and there's a in the program that she's using it's easy to add that so yeah we're in theater with theirs we added our own we added this this six priority goals that the district has come up with as our strategic priorities right and we put those under there because jacket said it'd be great to have them all aligned with ours and so sue I mean it was like Mary I think we can do that easily so typed it in and this last board meeting it actually had it on if you looked at it when we talked to Cabinet about it cabinet also it makes much better sense because it really what it did it really did help us to see oh look all of these things are aligned with what we're doing is

how much time did we spend on our board agendas that are aligned with what we say we're going to do and so it was it was very helpful that was actually a very good suggestions believe it or not yeah I can look at it mostly this time because I saw it there before and dismissed it because it didn't matter because it didn't match that's why because I'll go back and look at it again whatever we did at the Pentagon how did it support the president's strategic goals everything we did we had to tie it in and and there's a good sense to that because then you could say yeah this is how it ties in to the board's goal of of reaching X goal you know one of the six so then it has staff

thinking about okay is this a line yeah is it a line but also well they do care about it they do want to see what we're doing is working towards that role we'll look more closely it's also a good reminder for us one of the things that I started saying earlier that Dr Suzuki did was when we did her evaluation um again the thought was we get so busy and so many things and you forget half the things that happened during the year that you've accomplished is that she gave us all of the things that the district has been has accomplished over the last year in regards to all those different categories and that really helps remind you of wow we actually did you actually did a lot of things yeah it's really the staff

does everything but what Our intention was for them to do actually was implemented so it's always nice to have reminders every now and then it's like oh yeah we are accomplishing these goals long ago collect uh on the sheet that has the indicator the gold standard and then the comments which is correlation of what I'll repeat that from all of you um I don't know the First Column to the left is the indicator so the seven indicators two phases then I'm sorry do we have another Japanese oh absolutely oh did you get that yeah [Applause] yes do I get an A do I get sprinkles on my seat you get a gold star you get a gold star for gold standards yeah oh you want wait can you put it up no okay and I'm

gonna bring since this is one of the comments I'm gonna bring this in okay you know let's go through some of this all right this year so we can right here okay you know my kids favorite person at least the girls is Peggy Baldwin Peggy Baldwin who's Peggy Baldwin she's a cello yeah she's their private cello teacher yeah not like a Peggy and her uh her license plate is four pegs for the cello oh my God that's that's like having a license for education who would have that who would have that license plate must have it right now I love that don't say I have it because people are going to be hanging his car [Music] did you get a copy yeah probably have been around let me sell you on um our new drama

choir music teacher is putting on his first performance this weekend at the pack uh clue tonight tomorrow night and Sunday just in case you and later want to swing by all right we have heard I shared with Dr Suzuki I mean I have not no I am Friday Saturday and Sunday prom but uh I heard just the incredible briefs about him this relationship with students and just their what he's doing and promoting but we need to figure out a way I guess is he he just got married right or is he getting married a week and a half ago yeah we've announced it to the public twice [Applause] yeah you're just talking about that yeah he's got mice my oldest son playing uh percussion pretty cool yeah he commutes from Montana [Music] and she commutes

into it's either UCLA or USC I wish I didn't have to commute uh looking at experience the uh finding people housing with a grand PA to work a fourth house yeah I wonder if they can do it retroactively if someone already has a house they can apply for account I don't know tenants man it's depressing yeah that's a dollar amount here you can you can once you start going keep going and then we'll we'll share it till yeah okay so again on the left hand side uh are the indicators um and my apologies sometimes I try to put too much on that one document I guess but anyway uh this was fine as far as the second column is uh there's a B for the average and this is over the last uh seven years

of using this document so for example the 3.93 shows that that rank could that indicator number one as the seven of seven and then that's how below that six seven three four blah blah blah that's how that indicator might in previous years then you move to the third column the gold standards and that's one a and then to the right of that is another average this year uh 1A had a 4.20 rating which was tied at for the 15th ranking of 30 standards and then to the right um a lot of the comments were the same so I just kind of used the wording that fit what they were basically was saying and uh so you may not see exactly what you wrote but it's a compilation of what feedback was on that uh then

you go down the one B uh goals and data are both aligned to strategic priorities that that also had a 4.22 and tied it for 15 and then the comments on that I don't know if you want to go through all 30 of these uh what the board was prefer to do the one sheet I had that gave you the rankings according to Franklin 1 through 30. I think to go through both documents is maybe a little overwhelming yeah so uh my vote is not to go through each we can take it home and look at it and be used that's my book but I think I agree yeah if there's any particulars that people want to discuss I know it looks like there's uh money measurements reports to a graduate a couple times that

was me I don't know if anybody else had those comebacks but I mean and this I don't think this is a huge deal but it's important at least to me I like courtroom graduate okay I thought it was a a well-rounded view of what we want our graduates today um [Music] but when when I look at all the items on there we don't really measure them and I'm not sure we can measure any of them but sometimes not being able to measure it doesn't mean you can't face make an attempt anyway we know if if that's the goal which I'm not saying this nebulous it's what we want them to walk out with how did we know we're being successful exactly one of the things that we were thinking about we talked about this in

cabinet because we looked through um the rankings that the board put we kind of glance through them um but as soon as we kind of do it together and looked at that one because we just this was just finalized last year after the years of the compilation one of the things right now is every classroom has this in their classroom but every teacher has gone over it with their principal multiple multiple occasions and ended the beginnings of their own PD and such it's discussed so one of the things I'm thinking because it is a hard one to measure you know a five point scale or whatever is if you look at because it would be good to be able to report out on the things right well so what Jack just said is absolutely true

right right how do we know we're being successful so Future Ready skills I mean you we can look at these and maybe in different areas and we can discuss what it might look like life skills I mean you can have kids do self-ranking on some of these things you could do that however um College and Career Readiness and plans that would be an easy one to do a pictograph of what percentage of our kids have plans for the future right because they we can figure that out but a good example though would be if the board were to focus on life skills and we decided okay we want every graduate to be financially literate then we would bring back uh class like on your own or whatever financial literacy right now is a six-week class

incorporated into so we do have the financial literacy portion of that class in every every student gets it before they leave is my understanding when we talk to Lisa in what class is that part of government economy I think it's economics yeah so every child does get that because that was one that was important to us so now what with teachers and principals are looking at is how are we teaching these things some of them are harder to teach than others right but are we allowing kids to demonstrate curiosity or are we doing one hand up one hand down are we allowing kids to have those discussions the dialogues to ask questions to be curious are we allowing um I still love honest self-reflection we can always talk about the final one by atoms of

self-defense um but she points with me I do I claim to you but no because when we looked at these these are hard to measure from a um quantitative measurement some of them are and some of them are more qualitative anecdotal or narrative measurements maybe you'd have to because that doesn't mean you can't measure no it doesn't mean it right and you need to and and we need to get information from students about this do our does our alumni survey give information about this does our senior does our senior and so then we have to look at the questions that we're asking our kids and go back and evaluate that what tools we're using do they do they actually ask these questions that's the big thing to me is our teachers aware of it are

they conscientious of what some of those things are and particularly including those things in lessons or activities or things like that and then it's how do you measure it is it effective what you're what you're teaching and doing and those are counselors this year because we were in our counseling meeting right here this was brought up the first time of how do we make sure our kids walk away with this this was discussed in detail with when Lucinda was in here because do our kids walk away with the plan for life after graduation or are they just saying I'll take a few years and you know but what is so they looked at this of how do we help our kids get ready for this because this is a big task right the teachers are

very aware of it counselors were used throughout that day of planning as well now that not that they have all the answers because none of us do but as far as how do we make sure kids are developing these mindsets I mean it's what does our does our teaching exemplify um actions and activities that help kids to do this or is our teaching still very traditional and not allowing kids to do this and I would be with the things that are hard hard to have a quantitative measure okay I would be totally comfortable with your evaluation for me you're going through the classrooms you and Lucinda and Lisa are in the classrooms and the principals are in the classrooms um way more than we are okay okay I mean I try to go make sure

I go to every school every year okay but that's a little tiny snapshot and so in terms of the things that some of the things you were just say you should be observing those in the classroom when you're there I mean I'd like to think of strategies and other things that we've talked about okay I would be fine with your evaluation of how we're doing on those soft fuzzy things um that's okay well and when we walk through essay um leadership team with the principals too and we look for these shared commitments that we have because we have the shared commitments for each year what we're looking for and we actually put what percent of the classrooms did you see this in when you walked through and one of them is student engagement I mean

that's one of them right now is absolute student engagement because if our students aren't if we're talking about Avid we're talking about um kids collaborating and discussing and dialogue and they're not doing that with blocking classrooms and they're not the ones who are learning that's a problem right so but but but is it because well they can also be doing things independently where they're practicing something I mean that's learning too but if you have one child always responding to the question it's always Jack's hand up Jack is probably the one who's learning the most right maybe but you have the introverted kids that isn't gonna talk but they may end up being the valedictorian because they're the smartest and and they're getting it they're just not a big mouth like me well but I think

part of it is you want to try to draw introverts out to some extent and there are some kicking strategies for for dual map I mean I I hear what you're saying but we're we're not going to rewire people and and the world needs all kinds we need introverts so okay it's interesting I'm reading a book give and take by Adam Grant talks about givers and takers in the world and then transactional people in the middle who will give intake evenly and which succeed and don't succeed and just this morning they talked about a guy who's an introvert who created this company and he just sits at home and he programs computers and it turned out through Linkedin he was the most connected socially to one of the most important people in the world through

this algorithm and anyone even though he's this guy that sits at home and he we basically retired at 30 and is now using all his money to make the world a better place but he's doing it as an introvert so he's actually I think accomplishing a lot of those those paths without having to be where he's he's had luxury to his success of being able to you know accept who he is and not change who he is and still be successful in the world he has belief himself he obviously is right right adaptability about this is that I always say that academically there's going to be kids who just have that the brain set just like some people are great at basketball other people are great at hockey you know academics is basketball and there's

going to be some kids that have all these strengths and you know but this is the world of education and they're going to succeed at how the system is set up um and I've always said you know it's really unfair that we Champion these people who have had the help and the aptitude for it and kind of subconsciously at the disregard of everyone else because I now that I look at this it's probably the same with social skills is that we're asking kids who you know inherently will never be able to accomplish some of these things because of who they are but might be great at other things well it may be that the introvert you don't have to be always talking to be sharing right I mean they can be sharing in a variety

of ways they may be coding something as a group they may be that introvert maybe has certain skills within the group if they're learning how to collaborate in a bigger in a bigger place right instead of just and that introvert is very connected like you just said they're not isolated because isolation isn't pretty much helping for anyone right yeah the introvert still has he's connected in other ways right so I don't know I mean they're great things too I test out as an interview see I told you those tests are yeah I do because I need my time alone to re-energize it well extrovert everybody well extroverts don't get their energy from being around other people so when I need to go right now I would love to at the school like you said these

are all a lot of the questions we ask are great questions for the teachers you know can we measure this how do you measure that well let me I'll tell you what we do it right now on all the report cards in your drop down menu works well with others although the es's and ends that you put on the report card now they're not exactly what that says but people are subjectively putting grades down um for for how what students behaviors are and I don't know if that's ever been standardized we tried to do this in Covina Valley with the creativity collaboration critical thinking communication we tried to do rubrics with it um and it was so so hard but we were for the 21st century learning project to do rubrics and there was so

much controversy with it um because how do you measure creativity right communication isn't only verbal communication or can it be you know communication through other means that an introvert might be using um how important is communication I mean it's well yeah I mean I was listening to rejection and there's there's some there's some political question but my senses do we want do we what I want a teacher saying oh he's just an intervention okay I hear what you're saying but if you look at the vast majority of teachers they tend to be extroverted and and we see this in industry or and school that if you're looking at everyone whether student or employee from the lens of I want you to be more talkative or whatever that's not how those how introverted people are wired

and you need the it takes all kinds I don't want a kid to be discounted for it I think on on the other they need to be I guess not celebrator I'm having a hard time articulating it but it we need to okay understand that not every kid is going to be raising their hand or are going to provide input or if show that they've learned by raising their hand or saying something and down showing it in multiple ways to each other right or discussing it not even just verbally but through a type of flow map through a type of um Google classrooms and there's all different ways to be expressing it other than what an extrovert might do other than somebody who has verbal articulation skills that are really strong right and I think

the teachers should have that understanding of hey this student isn't going to have that but this is what I can show that their strengths might be I mean and I think the biggest thing on there is honest reflection about oneself I think that's the biggest thing is you know if a student realizes hey I'm not comfortable doing some of these other things but I'm not going to limit myself with my introversion my strengths and ideas can be brought through without that type of thing but it's no different than academics there are kids who have the brain structure for doing calculus and some kids that don't and you know subconsciously you know the message goes out there that these kids are better than these kids because they have that that capability in the school system they're

the ones that are we used to be uh above average and Far Below basic you know some kids got labels of being far below basic and everything I mean let me carry that label around you know whereas these kids were you know exceeds expectations or whatever it was exceed standard well the worst thing to me from former students running into what they comment I've had the name is uh Mr P I bet you thought I was never going to yeah yeah can you come yeah come up with that of course being a vice principal and yeah you know disciplinarian uh with some of those that they had that interpretation that it makes you feel okay what did I do or what could I have done yeah better because obviously the student felt that way at

that given time when the board used to shake hands with the students coming down one of my former classes that graduated coming down and a kid I really liked and he liked me shook my hand and he said to me he said you put me in a dumb kidnapper oh what's his comment to me you know coming off the stage yeah it uh well and the two of you could relate to it thing that's always bothered me is when teachers ask a question they allow two and a half to three seconds for a response I am never going to respond to a question in two and a half three seconds because it's like you're talking I'm sitting there uh well another example Jeopardy has been in our family for obtaining centuries we watch Jeopardy Elena

will spell things out and I still analyzing okay how does this fit with this category asking and she's already kicked out the answer so it goes back to where all the process different yeah process totally different I mean I guess what I was trying to get out of here if we have a portrait of a graduate there's no one answer or right answer for that attribute I don't want to Discount the introverted kid okay but it contributes to local and Global Community the student or the person you were just talking about that was doing it connected through digital that person is doing it just as much as the person who is out there verbal or whatever other way right I mean an extrovert or an introvert both can contribute to local and Global community in

different ways yeah yes I think of all of these you could be an extrovert or an introvert and still accomplish these that would be a good thing to look is this more biased to extrovert or introvert or is it equal right balanced it's a great question well if you're trying to measure it you need to be sensitive to that yeah most important thing is the thought that Beyond academics there are these other skills that are going to make them as important in my opinion more important more important for their success than what their actual grades are in school and that these are them absolutely and let's start the expiration just like we're doing with the college thing and probably stumble and make mistakes and learn along the way uh but still have a greater good

and not letting perfect get in the way better by uh you know starting down the road and paying attention how do we attend to it and measure some form of success without that was the point of my comments on this forum not the perfect but yeah try right yeah okay what is it yes how do we and how do we keep aware so the end kids are aware of what we want for them yeah this sounds maybe too far but when you were go you had that up and you're going through it I was thinking every new which you know we get a few a year if you get a quiz on that and every old teacher and every superintendent I mean I need to look at these and I mean it's not just your

new news I know but but you have control of that yeah names three attributes would be it's like hey have you done anything in your classroom with this workship of graduate what kind of lesson have you done and what did you find out and what worked and what didn't and did you share it with other people you know just show me that you're paying attention to it it's not just hey we're gonna focus on this and then we'll talk about it again what does it look like in your classroom just noise that's one thing it's a reminder but when our principals are talking to teachers they're having the discussions around this what does it look like in our classroom integrating it with the curriculum because a lot of times I could see people as oh

I have to teach a lesson on this lessons about integrating yeah within the lessons these are skill sets within lessons that's like the outcome of what you want the kid to have sequence and it's okay multiple choice which one of these represents the sequence versus draw a picture that shows me the sequence right exactly you know it would be creativity versus that you're you doing the same thing but involving creativity in it but some of them are straight out you know like can you hold it up again bam thank you I'd like to buy a valve plans for life after graduation that's pretty huge explicit that okay and then to me that that's kind of the life preserver I want to start with before we start swimming everywhere and all we do finding the direction

we want to swim is for kids to know and still to me I'd love to see if there's a school district anywhere in the world that's answered this question how do we know which kids we should be encouraging to go to college and which kids how many kids should we be you know maybe encouraging going to different places you know we look at that student track and go oh you know 20 of our students go to four-year College 25 go to a two-year college and the rest don't go to a college well what should that number say where should where should they go and what's the process oftentimes is a technical school yes yeah right and I think the door is going to be opened a lot as far as figuring out the college answer

with what we're starting with the dual enrollment that students when they find out I didn't realize that Jack said that last night and I'm like that opens the door to a lot of questions that you can take one semester college class of math yes you get credit for a whole high school year that's a great you just got done in half the time the classics we might you know in one sense have a lot of kids graduating high school their junior year and not have seniors anymore and that brought a question up to me could they take their first year of college Pennsylvania do they have to be your senior year and they grad if you satisfied your credit requirements can you graduate early yeah or do you want to finish your Associates too well

I can finish myself and and I wonder if you could finish your Associates and at the same time in two years I guess you can't start till you're 16. yeah right which is it's arbitrary if it's age base because like I have a young ninth grader he's he just turned 14. he can't start until his second semester of 11th or anything I graduated 16. I could be taking anything but that's that's going to keep a quarter of the population over High School there that was my question is if you started early and kids can take those classes they might you're definitely all their units by junior year and yeah but you're taking out what the parent that wants right for that kid yeah I'm not having Jesse at 16 heading off to UCLA Channel student

once the student gets to be a fun personally once you have enough credits do you have to graduate high school once you reach your credit goal well it's like college you don't have to okay so you stay there just keep taking no I'm not I'm not answering I'm right I'm saying like in college you don't graduate until you go talk to the the register or the administration and apply to graduate I never thought about that well and also through 18 well yeah there's a lot of I'm sure there's a lot of loopholes that you can do too if somebody's 15 they really want to take a class can we petition it I mean I'm sure there's a lot of other things you can do you can enroll normally just not through yeah but go ahead

12014. bringing it back to the partial graduate though that's the the having that plan you know I remember when John Getz said it I wasn't on the board I mean I thought it was genius you know just about I want every student to know what they're doing and have a decent plan like a hard fast plan that they're clear on when they they graduate it was great talking to our student Representatives last night that both of them had a plan so it's good to see I just want to interject I have to leave in about 15 minutes yeah why don't you pick up this list or okay so well um you know teeth decision well I think the technical thing is taking this uh document and cream an action plan or picking out uh as

the board sees the consensus of three or four things that they would like to see a focus on and take it from there but I don't think the goal today would not be to create that action plan that's going to be a next step to create an action plan from that support group of smart to use is that good because now are you ready for the great reveal I really messed up because last year as we looked at this document we said there's a lot of repetition some of the wording isn't real clear and so if we went through and eliminated a 10 of these items because we thought they were you thought they were repetitious and then there were two others three others that we looked at and said hey the wordings would be

okay for example the one that talks about ensures that that the wording was changed on that and this is the document you did not receive right or certainly so um I appreciate the fact that you went through and Faithfully in all the other extra work in her value footage so I will make sure that these changes are made for future so I was hoping that maybe one of you would come up within me I'm telling you the volume of stuff you get you know they run before I forget can you just turn around turn around look out the window but uh yeah I however you would like to take these uh documents and look at the next steps I think generally you look at this sheet where they're ranked from 1 to 30 but really

there's not Hillary 30 I think so I'll change that but looking at the lower ones that say okay are we consistently one are they that important because that was a comment made on one of the evaluations that was uh had a lower ranking but it also made comment it's a lower ranking but I don't think is that important and uh so uh looking and selecting and coming to consensus on yeah there's a few of these in to look at all 30 of them and create an action plan would be um I don't think would be worthwhile but that's in my opinion but usually if you can take three or four items and say hey let's let's try to focus on this to make some type of change or anything like uh you can go through

email yourself well some of them we don't really have much control over the leadership of some of our employee groups we're working on it positive and strong relationships yes but number six communicate at all levels that comes back to uh on the shoot communicate at all levels which comes back to you know getting information out about the good things that we're doing and the staff board relationship which is interesting to me because again there's a fine line between how much we can interact with staff and then us then usurping our role as you know 30 000 foot view type people up here but I love to find a way to have more exposure to staff members let them know that we care other than just walking through classrooms every once in a while I know

how you can do that appropriately and again not going back to sitting down with groups and hearing the hearing of grievances but and it tell me the functions I think the functions are key like going to clue I think that that shows staff that we really value them going to the functions I think is also really important yeah especially strategy into their functions and that is something that we can do and make sure that we make an effort to go out those are really key back to school nights all of those are like things that they put so much time and energy into I think that also um and I'm trying to think if there's like ways to not you can't have all five board members but like if one board member's there and we're

um I'm trying to think of other ways too without it going around where you're then having to be the one responsible to bring the information right you know it's a tough one it is yeah it is you want people to know that you're there for them and working to you know and that we do want to hear your feedback but we don't want to come and get to the point where it's like oh let's just go talk to that board member they'll fix this problem it is interesting because when we do like surveys some of your most vocal people may have one thing and I'm just thinking you even vacation okay do you want one week or two weeks up at Spring break right we sent out the survey for that for all of our

employee groups because if you're in maintenance or anybody who wants to do this summer work you want a longer summer to try and get things done while kids aren't in class right um but you may have the louder group want this and then not as a lot of people want this but when they vote on it it comes across clearly that what we're hearing out there isn't what they want they wanted this other so then we go those are the introverts versus yeah and you want to hear the introverts as much as the extroverts right um because somebody said recently you know we may hear from a few parents they want more meetings on this or this but we want to hear from all so if you send it out to all the BC is

this for all parents or is this for a few parents and then how do we meet those needs right so or for a few students for all students so it is trying to find those pieces but yeah thanks because we don't have a lot of Staff come to board meetings right um before we had 21. he logged in there's probably a lot of employees I would bet but maybe have that maybe even having like the board president go out to a lunch with me with the staff at different points take a a round bag lunch one one board member or even if we do it I don't know if you could have like a board staff lunch or mixer or whatever and just if you notice that well you can flip we can also like

that position where we're the ones flipping pancakes and then interacting with staff too I mean they don't want to eat my cooking even flipping their pancake or boiling water either I'm trying to think how do we do this without biologics those are functions right so yeah so we can do a function where we're doing something nice for yourself to come they have the right to come absolutely I mean all we're going to be doing is mixing and introducing ourselves to teachers yeah we just have to be careful that we're not discussing board policy about ourselves no in a non-the -art there are the three questions or the four questions that are in that book the board book and they have a good guideline to go by you know it's like what what's something good that's

going on in school was there any person here who deserves you know credit when they walk all over that person and say hey a lot of people are saying that you've done a great job with this and this and this and this you know and it's okay to hear it but that might be a good a good Avenue for us to then explain what our responsibilities are great I'm glad you shared that with me you know um I'm sure you shared it with your your principle for when you're letting me know and you know we heard it so this is very interesting discussion because correct me if I'm wrong six years ago prior to doctors like seven years seven coming on board sites didn't want board members even showing up we had we had meetings

at the sites with the teacher yep which were generally not very good oh they weren't they weren't good in person but they got hurt yeah you know they got what they wanted you know so and good things came out about I'll never forget the culture I know you know that was the big thing that that came through the one group that were mostly the athletic people or knew they were right you know well and it wasn't really the social Gathering yeah it became more of a grievance right you know exactly so but one of the high school kind of stands out yes yes and uh yeah I'll never forget one of my whole groups was talking about the ugly solar panels that were at Baldwin Lane and how it was unfair to the people who

lived across the street to have to look at them I don't know he came to the high school to talk about what's going on here and you know how can we hate it how can we make this better for children you know let's get excited and you know and how and how we leverage the school districts that you know for anyhow it was very strange so that might be one of the actions such as just how do we find what type of opportunities can we provide provide interaction between Ford and staff to demonstrate our support and to provide opportunities for listening energy I think something like that okay sounds good to me yeah maybe they are smart because having the introductions is really important you feel uncomfortable when it's like hi who are you I'm

a board member although that's the point is I want to know them not that I remember everyone but be like I want to know yeah I'm really terrible with that yeah I know I know that's why I want Mary to say oh this is so-and-so and they teach you but you don't have to be good at it because you're introverted anyhow I think you're a mix I'm mixed yes if there's a good way to do it it would be nice to to meet all the employees face to face so that they know who we are and that we can admit that you know we recognize them and care because we do you know we want them to be successful I think come here you may have poo-poohed her idea but um it's been my experience

in the past even working locally that when you're serving food or whatever and hey here's your breakfast taco which is a very Texas thing or here's the whatever that you it's so informal and you're serving it yes that's a great they can see you when they're not the top it's nice for people to see you as yes and I think that a lot of times I'll see somebody say something but I'm sorry I shouldn't have said that because you're the superintendent and I think whatever if you could say whatever right I mean somebody had recently had cussed about something and um and I said I didn't even notice the things right because I want people to be honest with you about things to tell you what's working what's not working when they're frustrated I think

that when you're serving them and you're out there people can say they just kind of share randomly they don't have like a whole agenda they share more honestly well it's a it's a purchase point to make you more accessible exactly yeah but what's the what's the data that shows it uh on one through ten and employees look at salary being number eight unless they're not appreciated it's number one right I think that's part of this whole thing well that's sort of the does it go power with inflation but that's part of the I would say the appeal of the district is being the small town feel a scene I just saw Heather Lindquist at the bonds the other day and it makes you approachable and I don't know okay so let me that will be

working with you and I can maybe we can talk to Kevin about and principals and I'll ask teachers what would make them feel comfortable to be able to have more access help are there any service days the week of Thanksgiving or is are all the employees office service station you like the PD day that we just did well the kids are gone our employees here during the week of Thanksgiving at all well I I just thought yeah I bet but like like yeah yeah even if we bring in pizza or something we can serve like to a school site or even just bring in coffee and whatever pastry randomly before their meeting and say hey we provided this for you and hopping off a little okay whereas you know at the the end of the

year thing we're we're invited and most everyone goes it's I'm not saying it's cliquish but you sit down and it's just it's bsing with people rather than having a touch point with every employee and you have some of the employees that are like oh crap there's a sport members over there going over here it could be great to overcome that you know and do things like I went out of my way to talk to the new teachers on my way out try to Corner each of them you know we used to do in one place that we did a new teacher luncheon for the board members and then um the board members came they they welcomed them and or classified new teacher classified new teacher I mean so that's kind of a nice thing too

because then you can meet the new staff as well the beginning of the year when you do that those in-service days for the new teachers invite the board yeah yeah I was I was thinking of something sooner no no I was too late yeah yeah telling the principles they'll probably have good ideas that's a good idea it's just oh no I know yeah because all of you want to go together or a couple of you at a time well let's feel it out see what the principals say and what how they think it can fit into whatever except for man they don't ask it yeah it doesn't show up because sometimes just showing and even sitting in the lunchroom and saying yeah people are walking kind of nice because then they could just stop in

the end of your ear I mean that's what I might just go to zoom in there I'll be doing really contentious times where I think they probably want to vent about stuff that I make sure that I'm not sitting in there because they may want to be talking about all things other stuff you don't want to be uncomfortable you don't you want to make sure that they yeah yeah so I mean just if we can explore but it's okay that what do you think that idea they've got stuff going on so yeah it just depends I don't think anything needed but it just depends on what's going on right and that also was a board goal was culture working on culture in our school district and it's a goal for teachers and staff too and

and kids and I know the teachers are working on how do we interact with kids to make sure the college with all of us there so I think that's a great that's probably our number one thing is to get out there and see what could we do that's probably the top goal take some notes of things and not sooner than later yeah for the holidays and then also uncommunicated all levels getting the message out about the good things that we do but I don't want to put more work on anyone especially without compensation but maybe exploring you know thought you're being good as a school district thing happening more often and we put out press releases I mean the grizzly over the years has run in my gear has been incredibly positive and helpful for

this District okay um the problem is the readership is so small but you do remember the world news too if you send it to ET people are drawing for Content these days you know it's like it's not the reporters getting it they're so strained budget wise where they want you to come with a story yeah and say oh great didn't even have to get up look at all this information Mary same I'm gonna call her ask a few questions boom knock it out versus having to go into your research you know so I think when you send people you have something on the radio every week all right I should come out and do the jewelry technology I should come out probably interesting if not next week if they want to speak yeah and then

it repeats itself you put it on the Facebook page social studies and language okay and good word then the anti-climactic how about disappointing rude okay uh too much well thanks uh to Dr Suzuki and Sue they both uh put in a lot of work on getting these things together appreciate you facilitating yeah well hopefully so if you come up with something that's helpful and meaningful worthwhile we're done all right we're finished all right start scheduling things with that so call meeting adjourned thank you thanks everyone
