call please board member folks all right aye roberts aye mark all right hi um we can move right into your pony employee announcements well this is another true celebration because we have amazing employees to introduce tonight i'm going to go ahead within our audience first we have sean young who's going to be our advanced information technology specialist so he'll be working directly with jk corey and sean has actually worked for the district for 10 years he's been here since 2012. um he has was a certificate substitute in math because he's actually one of those kind of math geniuses who would have been an amazing teacher too um he started in the accounting department as an account technician then lucinda took him over um because he was incredible to the student service liaison which he did

great things for kids and now jake is the winner so when in addition shawn owns his own i.t company that developed e-commerce solutions for medium and large businesses sean built two software quality assurance departments from the ground up and sean holds a master's degree in business administration with the specialty and information systems so we are getting highly qualified right in our own backyard and we are thrilled because we know sean and he is just an amazing person and does great things for all of us so thank you they all everybody you know wants shawn it is and then britney wilson brittany's coming to us as our new science teacher at big bear middle school brittany was also very wanted this is a position that i'll be so important to us as well for our science

department brittany um has her bachelor's in mechanical engineering from the university of denver she is from palm springs but has been in the big bear area since april 2021 and she has been operating her own business while pursuing a teaching career welcome bringing you're so excited okay and now we have a lot of menus to introduce we have our two bilingual english language learner aides at big bear high school one is brenda ruelas and brenda moved to big bear from arizona where she received her bachelor's degree in spanish studies at northern arizona university she's very passionate about helping our el students laura crowe who worked at mount saint mary's university in the student affairs and she helped students adapt to college life as well as translating documents for parents in english and spanish so the

high school is thrilled to have the talents of both brenda and laura and then we have brandy ayala it's quite a list tonight isn't it great it shows how diligently brandy ayala who is another one of our bilingual aides and she will be at big bear middle school she has worked as a an ella at big bear middle school since december and she is now going to be full-time there i'm not full-time but how many hours is six hours she's compassionate and empathetic and relates to students because she also was an english learner at one time diana mckelvey and teresa garcia both cafeteria workers who we always need desperately in our schools and diana will is excited to be just joining the department and teresa garcia moved to big bear from the high desert and

she's really thrilled to be in our child nutrition department carlos diaz-lopez our new custodian over baldwin lane so that was a huge position to fill as well i know that leanne is very excited to have him join because we did lose danny um to the utility through two worker positions but danny has really helped us through the transition so and then jamie jarrett special education aid at big bear middle school and jamie relocated to big bear from texas where she worked as an instructional aide and a pharmacy technician so she has experience from there as well amy o'connell and jamie cancer-carris both at big bear middle school and they are also both special education aides and amy graduated from baker high school we're seeing this more right some of our bigger high schools and is

excited to give back to the community and work with students in special education and jamie moved to big bear from texas we've had a few that came from texas right and we were worried everybody was going to be moving that way whereas she was a special education job coach she worked with local companies to provide opportunities for students with special needs so we're getting a lot of great experience from other places as well florentino escortia our new utility 2 worker also and this is because we had kenny and both kenny and victor kennedy both were promoted to one so um he is coming to us from the transportation department as one of our bus drivers he worked with emino over the summer and he truly is a great addition for us he grew up in

big bear and also graduated from baker high school okay so that is all of our exceptional employees that we now are able to have and we are so all right dr suzuki you wanted to continue on with your super tech comments well first i just want to thank our staff our families and our students for making this an exceptional first week of school and also our booster clubs i watched the booster clubs putting up arches and they were out there and the students noticed that they really noticed if it's exciting and then people want them there so thank you to all and um our enrollment this is really great news our enrollment is currently at two 2156 with our ada at 95 to 98 and every student showed up at chautauqua so they had 100

um show up of their 47 students which is amazing um so i am truly thrilled that we did not lose 200 students the what we had projected was and we are 2156 so that is a true gift for us visiting our schools this week i've been in all the different schools the excitement and positivity was palpable this has been a great start to our new year so thank you to everyone who contributed to that all right let's move on to board number reports anybody i just want to say oh you want to say something all right um it was really nice at the the uh welcome back breakfast uh i was there paul was there and steve did somebody i didn't see him there cd um so it was really nice uh everyone was excited

and rejuvenated from the summer and really excited about the new leaders of the schools the new principals so that was really really nice to see and i did notice the balloon arch when i was leaving for work um on monday and i drove by north shore elementary and it looked so inviting and it really did i mean they had people out there and all the colors and and the campus looked nice so um yeah it was it's very exciting i think people are happy to be back at school and happy to be you know getting back to to get back to a normal routine so that's all i have to say and they're extremely happy to be back and everything seems not just back to normal but better than normal everyone's positive and happy with

even my grumpy kids i think the staff you know from cafeteria to uh janitorial staff to the maintenance and teachers of course everyone's you know brought a really good positive attitude to school years starting out in it and it shows with the students they're happy to be there i agree kathy that everything it seemed a particularly upbeat breakfast i don't know that's too much coffee but it really made an impression that everyone seemed happier than usual not that they're not happy usually but it was a different level it seemed uh so that was a nice way to start the year and uh i also received two comments one in regards to uh leanne over at baldwin and what a wonderful job she's doing from an employee over there and also got a lot of compliments

from or heard a lot of compliments from a teacher at north shore uh about the jobs that they had done uh refurbing the particles they were extremely excited to see the conditions of their classrooms going into it they're like their brand new portables now so it's nice to hear those positive comments so starting here you all good okay all right let's move on to cabinet reports we have lucinda newton with your wellness conference update workout session and so to kind of share with each of them because we all went different ways tina fulver said that her favorite puts us in a state of fight or flight which can make us all very anxious so whether it really matters to students are their opinions being heard are their values and beliefs being respected are their varying

cultural backgrounds freely expressed what perspective are they taking and how are we validating the experience of others respected you feel like your input your dreams your desires your contributions your happiness your interests your inner sexual factors everything matters and then valued someone demonstrates that they have seen worth in you your contributions and regularly makes you aware of this cynthia britt she said the most informative session was sexual orientation gender identity expression and intersection of youth tobacco use now these percentages were part of a california study in case you're curious so 42 of lgbtq respondents seriously considered attempting suicide in the past 12 months and more than half transgender and non-binary youth have seriously considered suicide more than 80 percent of the lgbtq youth stated that covet 19 made their living situation more stressful and one

in three lgbtq youth found their home to be lgbtq affirming 48 of our lgbtq youth in california reported they wanted counseling from a mental health professional but were unable to receive it in the past year and finally lgb individuals who experience more sexual orientation discrimination are more likely to use tobacco taylor cerna her favorite session was acts of love a holistic wraparound model to address social emotional and behavioral challenges she said this session we were introduced to a brief overview of a holistic behavior analytic approach to addressing the challenging behaviors called acts of love acceptance commitment therapy that's what actives is based on empirically supported principles aiming to improve psychological flexibility by leveraging the influence of mindful practice while utilizing evidence-based applied behavioral science her big takeaways is that the act model pictured below she

has over there for you the psychological flexibility is the capacity to contact trying to change those private experiences or be adversely controlled by them and depending upon the situation persisting in or changing behavior in the pursuit of values and goals and just talked about how sound bath guided energy and grounding experience demonstrates helpful understanding in the mindful practice so she talked about on the whole mindful based interventions such as acting schools are promising particularly for stress cognition and attention related issues and to integrate the use of sound into the mindful practice already being done at waldo lane elementary school use the values of psychological flexibility to better inform interventions for students high levels of stress anxiety that's okay lisa moran her favorite was youth as culture builders using sel as the whole child framework she

talked about the castle model highlighted that social emotional learning s-e-l teaches self-awareness self-management social awareness relationship skills and responsible decision making it's important to talk about the different emotions with students how are they feeling why are they feeling that way how is their body feeling why are they having those emotions because when students are struggling think about a time when you were happy what is happiness what does happy look like and how can you get back to being happy and robert rodriguez his favorite was good grief how to support grieving children and families through the grief process associated with different types of laws so in this one in this session they defined the difference between grief and loss and they reviewed those major theories and models of grief and then reviewed the activities that can

be used with students suffering from grief and loss so there is a difference between grief and loss loss having something or someone leave or be taken from you grief keen mental suffering or distress over affliction of loss shared sorrow and painful regret myth about grief and loss grief has an ending he said there is no such thing some losses are more valid than other avoiding the pain will help and everyone grieves the same those are all myths and the session also included a number of grief and loss interventions activities that can be used with ages and in this picture if you're wondering he said originally they thought that you went through the stages of grief in order they now realize there's no such thing to that people do not grieve through the stages in a

row and that's what this is demonstrating just that you can come back to a stage move forward in stage jump a stage and so it can be quite different so this was our first steps as a team in building our comprehensive counseling plan tomorrow is day one uh where i'll be here in this room and we'll begin working on the comprehensive counseling plan we're going to talk about the purpose of that plan and then begin to look at the mission vision statements of our district and how do we integrate the mission and vision statements of our plan and then if we're lucky and you don't run out of time we'll begin to look at how do we want to format our plan and we're also going to be talking about as you know we want

a pre and post assessment this year so we're going to save some time to discuss that so there it is suspending assessing the effectiveness of the therapy right thank you um do we is there any of all the studies the students take is there anything that tells us how many lgbtq students we service or we have to go into high school so it's only if they've come to us the only thing we have is we do have plans in place for some one thing i learned is that it's between 14 to 50 percent of students in the state of california ours seems to be much lower than that you know so what percent was that again 14 to 15 percent um do we keep track of the counseling sessions that our counselors have uh so

we know how many of the sessions they have with students at each site yes so so we do and that's a piece we're gonna look at this year for our comprehensive is how are we all doing it the same are we all one of the things we've really worked on diligently in the last couple years is putting it into infinite campus so that's kind of something new so that we have a better way of tracking that so our data is i would say is improving all the time and that's going to be part of our conversations this year is that great uh one last question do we do parents get notified when there's a counseling session or is there a certain criteria at which point parents are contacted when the counseling session takes place with

a student so students over the age of 13 can ask for counseling and without care permission but we really try to work with our students to let their parents know it is we go to all links to make sure that parents do know so to be honest with you it's rare that parents don't students under that age we do we'll see them one time just to find out what it is going on and if they think it's something yes it needs to be addressed i was shocked the family engagement is number 10. okay because of that i mean i don't know that there's any certain order to those two like one is worth you know a value okay but i've got to be honest okay i read this before and i understand the words but

it doesn't click i mean i don't see this as wow this is wonderful um i don't see this as well this is horrible either but i don't see how this works okay and i will be very interested in the plan that comes out of it because right now it's just a fog okay i went through your presentation twice this afternoon and it just didn't help my understanding so hopefully it makes all sense to you and the people involved in this and all of our counselors and we will do great things but i don't know i just played back some of the things that have gone on the last two years with with parents coming to this board and saying how dare you try to fill in the blank right i mean yes most of it

was mass and vaccinations and all that but there was an undercurrent of we're trying to be the parent okay and that's really not our role and so i do think it's very important that whatever we're doing with their kids um if at all possible i suppose there are circumstances that there's parental abuse or there's some problem that there would be another issue right but under hopefully more normal circumstances that the parents would not only be aware but hopefully actively qualified belief absolutely you know even though the law may allow for that we really want parents involved it's their kids and also the counseling plan includes like you know apology career right because we look at the whole child i mean these are i think that one of the things that really came out of this

was different strategies for how to help um our students when they are grieving or if there is loss and we have had students who've lost young student deaths um last year year before almost every year every year and we have some areas at the end of last year we have had students lose their parents and um so some of those are the big pieces i think that what i heard mostly you really did get more information and different strategies and the biggest thing that you got was the team building that you had yeah it was it was the first time i mean just for us we would go so like i said we kind of divided and conquered right and then when we come back and talk about these different pieces and just the the

conversations that you have are so great but remember this is a brand new team this is the first year we've had all positions everyone's at each site so we need to kind of come together you know and and get some relationship there so that was really nice just a time to have all those conversations um and just kind of build that team it's a brand new team but you're gonna have to continue to build that i agree recognize compassion fatigue as an occupational hazard that's got to be true you're right and we talked a lot at the conference just about you know we've you know we've been focused on students and we absolutely that that's that's what that's our job and we like doing that but what about our staff you know i think that

we recognize especially at the end of last year that was fatigue there you know and so how do we support them too because the better we support them the better they're going to support you know students so that piece um this is such a i mean i wasn't even thinking about the whole piece of the the occupational and that whole part of the counseling this is this was all focused on the psychological and emotional social life but that just has a whole nother level of complication good luck and there was something there was some pieces on that but i asked everyone just to give us what was that one session i really spoke to you because remember we're doing it you know two three sessions a day so what was the session that spoke to

you that you're like gosh that was the one like really yeah so and we are and once the plan has materialized and you're comfortable then it will be presented to the board hopefully we can hear the counselors talk about what you come up too with and it's the extent to which you know what's the next step as far as the what can we do as a board to help make even better that that counseling support system so and on november 17 we expect to have a draft and and it may go through major revisions still different provisions but i think you're using the association of school counselors kind of as a format which is the professional group that oversees that so and there may be some more at the secondary it isn't elementary right because

you have that huge part about preparing students for life as well so and who takes on which responsibilities are that like at what point do we start that career piece where it points to you know all of those so you're probably able to interact with people from other schools that are probably years ahead uh this kind of thing too so i always like the idea of someone else has already created whatever you're thinking i'm sure there's some good resources out there different programs you know one of my second ones that i worked a lot at was that they had one from redlands um unified came up their whole team talking about they've been doing apparently ethnic studies for quite some time and so just to hear how they introduced it where it is now and

they i gave us phone numbers like call us you know we're happy to share resources and things like that and i'll say just listening and didn't make it seem so um you know just not so overwhelming as we begin to tackle that for the 2026 school year transactions school year so you know just having listened to them how they broke it out how it was chunked out what pieces they you know took was very helpful it comes back to what you're saying it was just nice and redland was not far away so you know you're absolutely correct but there was a lot of good sessions that we just thought we can't want to tell you about right i was just going to add that i mean my takeaway when i read this when we got

this afternoon was that it was a good opportunity for you all to collaborate because you have single individual pieces for them you know people working at individually at the sites and so many a chance for your team to come together and kind of talk about you know things together as a group and and get input from from other schools and and what they're doing other councils are doing so that was kind of that's that's usually the benefit of going to a conference to begin with there's something about you know they think that is lunch and breakfast who doesn't you know and just sitting with your team each day you know and getting to know them and so you know who are my teammates there's one in each site except for the high school so you

know just knowing and recognizing and making those connections that you need to feel comfortable enough to pick up their phone you know and reach out you know to one another so i think that was a very valuable partners too that's great thank you thank you all right we'll move on to number nine business financial the license agreement between fair valley unified and bpusd education foundation is there first to the second all right discussion so um i just had a question about um why bring inter as opposed to some kind of artificial turf just because of the extra expense yes i mean way more expensive oh it is oh okay i was thinking the opposite would be true yeah so you have to put in irrigation and and the plant is using subsurface grip which cuts

the irrigation demand by half there's a local contractor who can do that so we think we can do it with uh very water conserving the soccer people vastly preferred real term as well so mostly on that note bird walking a little bit have we ever looked into sinking wells water wells for irrigation for our fields i was i had a plan the original plan under the grant was to go up because at that time i have priced for a hundred thousand dollars well out of that area a thousand feet because that's how far down here i go in this area but i talked to reggie this morning and that cost is now a million dollars [Music] well that's prevailing wage right but so they're trying to drill well over a division and i believe their

price was i mean that's fully equipped i mean that's the third thing but and i asked him because he's the one that put me under the contractor to give my bid two years ago and he said yeah it's going to be probably three times it was mainly because of hq requirements all the weld dealers had to buy all of this when was the last time that that that area was usable well it's used every year by the track team um if you call it they practice them they practice on the foreign [Music] you know quite disregard yes the foundation i believe will be able to i've already got commitments for volunteer um grading and fairly significant stuff so i believe we'll be able to accomplish something there but we can't start until the track team

leaves and the track team won't leave until the stadium is done so it's something i'd like an update on what's we can't do anything this year for sure and if the stadium is up and running by the fall of 23 um it would certainly be able to get on in 24. i'm hoping maybe we could do something twenty-three i wonder if there were a way to get a commitment from bwp for use of a well during peak season which is when we wouldn't need the water so peak season is winter for people coming up and we would need it to water so maybe connecting into the system they could do a posture well it's a if we were to pay 300 000 for it and they paid us so much per year to have that

well we have flexible middle school and [Applause] and i think there was also an issue they used to give us this credit and then they stop that and start just paying this but okay water is an issue and so we need to look at it this is more foundations yes no only if it's using grant fund well now anything on this particular side of this country is going to have to be on that side but if you're drilling well it wouldn't necessarily oh it wouldn't i would not put it on this site because the district could take it away from us and that would be the problem the original plan to drill a well was just on the other side of the foundation so it wouldn't be cost effective i have no idea what our

water bill is particularly going to stay like the high school but it wouldn't be cost effective for a million dollars to take off but there's no water i just don't know if it's worthwhile a for the cost savings and b you know including the maintenance of what goes into that well service data but if we're paying a hundred thousand dollars a year in water it might make sense to put and it works great for the high school yeah i can uh go back and check because we do break out by a site what we charge in watering and uh you know just like with anybody up here we turn it on in april we shut it off in october so we don't water through the november 10 march but i'll be happy to put that

in [Music] but mr roberts you are correct as long as it's drilled on the foundation property that 200 acres or whatever they're that doesn't have to be yeah d.i.r and all that good stuff but on ours yes okay interesting well i like to yeah we're talking about a license agreement i guess so um so if uh you've got more questions then let's move to roll call please word number false hi eric hi roberts smart all right hi uh number 10 suggestions for future board meeting jet does have any if you can put in your party notes just about where we stand at the stadium meaning is dsa just sitting on it no we've had to make revisions based on the dsa feedback on it so it's in dsa right now oh afterwards yeah anything else

can we get an update on uh the news security center middle school yeah i mean it's a new school year but we'll see in a few weeks like especially at the high school but then i was working at the middle school for something else but maniac when i was out there they were talking about it mary said it is just exponentially better than anything they can but they're also seeing where maybe they need another one right because there was one now that we're looking and seeing and it makes one that's catching or you know watching students go this way but then if there's a blind spot maybe adding but overall the amount of oversight has been so significant oh they did because of the detector so linda's excited because well we don't want it worth

the investment we want kids to be healthy right and so with the vape detector now you know we can tell it very quickly and that did help decrease the sum of the making in the high school it looked like it went so here that does help us so that we already have one student that we did have to discuss that and we have to put in a change order already to for those additional cameras so uh i believe they've already got them in us no i apologize they will be installing up next week they ordered them we were hoping they'd get in while they were still on site but they'll come back out and install those additional cameras high school in middle school so um based upon the type of presentation you saw the overview

of what it was um is the focus more just how are we using it at middle school or is it on the system again would you like to see for me how it's being used at the most part it sounds like and i know that jake just is delivering tomorrow morning on two mini ipads um it's just two it's too good yeah just here on camera campus security so that they can be walking and seeing all the different areas as well right so it really does make a difference with that have you done the same at the high school determine you know block spots we've already put in i believe it was an additional five cameras at the high school we piggybacked on the middle school order and separated them out so the high school

got five and the middle school and then we did a change over to middle school's purchase order to include the additional cameras that through finding and using now seeing the blind spots so we'll move it along great any more suggestions for future board games one other thing was um you indicated talking to you and we're talking about it and possibly setting more money aside for facilities you said wait so it's about now right so well so while i know we're all excited about what current enrollment shows we still haven't dropped all of our no shows and things like that so usually seafence is the first week of wednesday i mean first week of october the wednesday and so we'll be working on first interim but before then once we settle in on our enrollment i'll

be able to do an assumption of what our revenues would be and then bring forward here's what i'm seeing in lcff as well as the additional restrictive revenues that are coming in how we can offset it i'm happy to present it i'd like to do it in the first board meeting in october is seabed's when we officially certify our um unduplicated account as well um enrollment and duplication so the actual certification date is the one day in time which is the first wednesday of october we have to get our free and reduced to october 29th and the books certified and then it will actually certify calpads numbers and as our seabeds in december correct it's usually right around december 14 15. so that becomes our certified numbers that we roll out into second enter but

i can do a presentation on or put it in a friday note so who would have conversation first 14 october i'll put it under cabinet reports just cleared the number that didn't give the 21.56 that's our current involvement so we look at enrollment and if that number of who showed up is 95 96 94 that's pretty close to what our enrollment is going to be so i'm very i'm very positive linda did project a loss of 200. um so at least we're not seeing that major exodus we're seeing really excited families and students and i am thrilled that our teachers are back with a just a positivity and actually if that enrollment number stands at 21.56 we will have recouped what we lost towards the end of last year and back to because last year

we certified calcads at so we're down 10 from what we certified last year so the positivity is easing but she has to be conservative fiscally to make sure that she supports us but that 2156 i would say give or take 20 is probably what it's gonna be but we also get more students after labor day and so we've got up to 20 students after labor day the other piece is that at baldwin we have 33 tk students which is the largest number we've ever had so we have to make two classes now our high school is also first thing in the scenes so we have to add um a social studies independent study teacher and we had to add some extra periods to teachers more willing to take periods because i am very happy i

am when's the last year we had increased enrollment an increase was the 16-17 year that was mary's first school year when coastal yes very soon we went we went back up to uh 76 i believe is what we certified at in 1617. and we were down to 21 no i apologize we went up to 24 because we were at 22 in 1560 and in 1617 we were up at 24. again so we gained about 200 grand those 200 goals so i'm very happy to be wrong i'm also putting it on record i'm very happy well some of them did use our virtual academy i think that people were having choices what's the only virtual academy dr weiner i have it right there they're small they're at 34 total right now oh yeah which which is

i think what's happening is kids wanting back on campus they're not there's a lot of them that some that have graduated it's untransferred back on that's fine yeah yeah the option and you said 47 that you talked about 47 years now they all showed up 100 yeah we'll see so we didn't increase because at the end of the year we were at 20 so no we're at 20 20 yeah 2025 so we're back at 25. it's all wonderful excitement and then because it is such incredible news for us compared to what other districts are going through all right if there's no more suggestions for future board meetings let's call this meeting journey thank you next meeting is august 17th
