fun all right um on Saturday uh September 28th over 400 people gathered at the clock tower to celebrate a rich history of BHS Athletics I got to tell you was a great evening um was there 5 hours uh and it didn't feel like 5 hours um it was nice to see how many declarated athletes we've had over the years there are folks there from 1976 all the way till today um and it was also nice to hear that some of our alumni um they're still competing today uh Forest Molinari um she was an outstanding wrestler US national team wrestler barely missed the Olympics well now she's going in MMA she's got a good team and she's going UFC so I'm feel sorry for whoever has to face Forest but proud to see that she's still
competing um but it was also impressive to see that the athletes weren't just successful in competition but they're successful in life contributing members of our society it just it just adds to this bu USD success story that we have going um I just really felt proud to be part of it Ron weed I know you're pretty well and I know you're not at home watching this board meeting um but I do want to thank you uh you've been a great friend Mentor Advocate and this community is very lucky to have you and thank you for putting this Hall of Fame together I just feel like today is going to be a BHS celebration um generational wealth activity event at BHS Joan Westerman I saw you a little earlier today thank you for everything that you
do putting this on uh this event is growing um is getting uh more publicity um some media attention thank you to CRA Travis Credit Union for giving our students um an opportunity to really feel what it's like to have a budget and how quickly it goes and thank you for the to the city of bonisha for your Proclamation as well uh bonisha high school was also named to the 2024 AP School honor role um this is the second year that they've done that um uh that they've had it and and BHS has has uh been honored both years so AP School honor Ro recognizes schools with ap programs that are delivering results and broadening access to students and as in our district as we talk about equity and inclusion access to AP programs is extremely
important and we're proud of our work and we'll continue to do so Rihanna since you're here today I've got to say something about you I think I've known you about 12 years and um I I'm just proud of what you're doing um it didn't take me long to realize that you were special when I met you and um it's no surprise that the accolades that BHS is getting under your leadership is not a surprise um but just remember we ran a 100 miles but we still got one to go um as a district we had an opportunity to uh meet with uh Dr Anthony Muhammad yesterday and if you had an opportunity to see Dr Muhammad speak um excellent excellent uh really does a lot of PLC work um and he makes it seem easy
he makes the work seem like you can just go right back to your school site plug and play and everything is going to be perfect and it's not that easy because I'm I'm I'm sure that many districts have tried in the past but he really focused on uh moving your program from PLC light to PL doing actual PLC work um we have our book there was a lot of excitement when we left the room so you can anticipate this is where we're going as a district because this is the work that moves the needle working together as a team reviewing data looking at our assessments having that in common and and having a path forward to make sure that all of our students are including in learning and achieving so we're really excited to um
talk about this work and um looking at the um Dr beatson and um also Stephanie and Briana and Mark were there everyone was excited I'm like okay it's time to go so more to come I want to do a couple of cultural um recognitions as well um October is National disability employment Awareness Month celebrates the contributions of America's workers with disabilities past and present and also highlights the supportive inclusive Employment Practices and policies as well and I'm going to try to pronounce this I butchered this last year but dia de la mues mues mu I canot say that but I can't say that word VHS is hosting the event on Friday October 11th at 6:30 from 6:30 to 9:30 it is open to um all of our school Community students fam staff and friends and
also Robert simple um they do that annually their event going to take place on November F November 1st so we're looking forward to those events also it's lgbtq History Month um where we honor members of the lesbian gay bisexual transgender gender non-conforming and queer communities and that's all I have for you today thank you Dr wri next up are our board reports you can you can go it's going to cover both of us anyway so um well great no this was a busy couple of weeks um along with trusty Zeta I attended and uh I attended the um the generation wealth event at the high school and I think I might have a future as a car salesman because I did a pretty good job selling the cars to the students um but I thought
it was a fantastic event and it really um uh taught students the value of budgeting and just how quickly that money goes um I also attended the BHS athletic Hall of Fame with Dr Wright and principal kenchi and it was a tremendous event umk thank you Mr wheat I can't call you Ron you've told me to call you Ron but I can't you're still Mr wheat um and uh it was great to see all the alumni that came out and I think it was um you know hopefully we can do some more activities like that um it was a huge event so I'm not talking about huge events like that but there's a lot of power in our alumni community and it'd be great to continue to bring people together um uh I attended a
scsba meeting this week and um not much of an update there was mostly a discussion about bylaws they might be bringing some new bylaws to our attention um in January and then lastly speaking of inclusivity I just want to highlight at the last football game that I attended I noticed that our yearbook students were on the field I think it was your book taking pictures with um one of their teach teachers Matt O'Reilly and Mr O'Reilly I've heard His Name a lot lately um a lot of accolades to Mr O'Reilly for involving his entire student body um in picture taking and I um I heard I was so it was so great to see him working with the students um he has modified the camera I heard he modified the camera to allow students who
aren't able to function the camera typically um so that they can access the camera and it was just really awesome to see him involve our students um who are part of our sped program so thank you Mr O'Reilly it was it was great thank you and anybody else have anything okay very briefly um so I had a chance to um visit the Willoughby Atkins program at the high school so um I just wanted say thank you to judge Davis um Lea Wallace and Dr Kelly um who were over the program along with our um our high school teacher Miss Jefferson and thank you Miss Klein Schmid for for hosting this program so um it was really nice um Dr Wright was there with me too for the visit um and then I went to the
um to bisha high school on Wednesday and visited some classrooms along with Dr Jennings so that was really cool too um the students are just so helpful and just so just so kind and it was so great to just be able to touch basis with the teachers as well so I think it's just some great things happening at at the high school and it really just made me have that appreciation almost made me feel like going back into the classroom to teach again um and then I have the c meeting um next week which is the community advisory panel um meeting so that's with Valero so um Community Partners attend that meeting along with um a couple of our council members so um again it's to just make sure that we are having a conversation
or you know if there's inquiries about what's happening at the refinery so um so that's it thank you Mr marceli the only thing that I can add to what trusty hirs said is that when we went to this wellth thought out and planned event that was held at the high school called generation wealth thank you Travis Credit Union again and thank you so much to um to our staff that helped put it together um I'm trying to move my notes down here Joan Wester and it was it was great and I especially liked when kids you what they do is they go around to all these booths and every Booth is selling a product and it could be cars it could be I was under baby cloes I was under clothing okay then then people
were under probably groceries and medical I mean it was just all different State uh areas and um I remember the kids coming down and they were really excited every kid just came over and I was trying to upsell them and they're they were being pretty cautious um most of them didn't do high-end anything but I maybe one or two but I had one student come back or two students come back and say I need to take something off I need to change what level of product I'm getting because I don't have any more money so we reversed it they redid their their numbers and it worked out great but I want to um applaud all the students that did this because it was they were so well behaved and it was just a joy to
be there so that was my little my little add-on sorry all right um we're going to move on to comments from members of the public all functions of the board meeting including public comments will take place in person members of the public May address the board at a regular meeting on any item within the board jurisdiction speaker cards are available on the entrance table please note the item you wish to speak to and submit a card to the board secretary the president will then call Open Session General comments during this time the Public Public comment item comments for items on the agenda will be during the specific item comments are limited to no more than three minutes per speaker or the board May limit the total time to 20 minutes per item with the timers
being displayed on our on our screens um by law no action may be taken on any item raised during the public comment period uh and matters may be referred to staff for placement on the future agenda of the governing board and to always be reminded to keep your comments respectful as there may be students watching so do we have any public com none of you lovely people want to do a public comment Okay so then we're going to move on to the approval of the consent calendar um background information on these items is provided to the board prior to the meeting a common motion takes action without discussion on a roll call vote unless uh discussion of the item is requested by the board members so can I I don't think I have any no
no I don't think there's any yeah I'm just double just double checking um can I get a motion I move that we approve the consent calendar is written thank you may get a second I'll second thank you roll call please s yesy Moss yes trusty Meli yes and trusty H yes you okay moving on to item number 12 um the first item I think is uh BD upgraded security system the ver verotta is that what it is ver verot camera system and Bruce Lambert our technology director is going to share information with us thank you Bruce good evening president Zeta trustees superintendent Dr Wright using measure C funds we're able to secure a new security system and and alarm system to replace our outdated old camera system which was in need of an upgrade so
I'm just going to go over some of the things that were briefly done uh while we have them on campus some of the key benefits that we had sorry were to improve campus safety we did a walk through with all the admin to make sure that all the new camera systems were getting placed in spots they couldn't see to upgrade visual um the cameras have amazing Clarity it's it's night and day compared to what it used to be and just the motion detections that they have at night is like the old ones we had would you know C web would go by and it record and it would just but these ones the advancments on the motion detection is really saving us a lot of trouble some of the key features for the system is
that it's cloud-based so we don't have have physical servers at every site anymore so it's just easy for streamline it's easy for management and um scalability future projects and it's web access and and uh app access so Administration can have have the app on the phone uh and there's something alert goes on on a camera it'll go right to their phone they can see it happening in real time same thing with the SRO officers they can if something happens to the site they'll get notified right away it'll pop up on the app and they can see uh real time what's going on it also comes with 24-hour monitoring through verata for um alarms um if somebody's trying to get into the building they'll look at the camera first to see if it's just you know
a cat or whatnot or if there actually needs to be police called and then notify us first and then you know next step and they have a 10-year warranty on all their cameras so we're covered for the next 10 years if it breaks they replace it with the same or newer version of the camera so for the scope of work uh for the cameras we have 586 new cameras installed districtwide at all the sites so now all the sites are upgraded to the new camera systems um we also installed envir Al sensors in the BMS and BHS bathrooms The Vape sensors so we get notified when that's going on and we updated the alarm system we had the Old Bay alarm system we now upgraded that to way better sensors and monitor sensors for each
each site and we also have Panic buttons installed so the Panic buttons are button that if an anybody presses it it automatically notifies 911 there's no phone call it needs to be made there's no it's just automatically goes to them and there's 10 per site so we'll work with admin to see where these buttons are going to be placed and how they're going to be used but it's it's good for security that you press a button you don't have to worry about it cops are going to come right away uh so in conclusion we did you know the the upgrade of the system is robust it protects student staff and anybody that's on our campus we have a better visibility we can the 24-hour monitoring by verata is paid for it's 10e licensing so we
don't have to worry about that for years um and it's the infrastructure is future proof so we can add onto it like uh access control for doors we can add mail room access we can add visitor pass access it's a system that we can continue to build on and not have to piece mail together so we can keep um not have you know just gets better and again the 10-year warranty is the really the selling point is that's a long time I mean our last camera system was installed in 20 2015 or 16 and it was good yeah we're better off now any questions sounds all right thank you thank you so much for sharing and I'm excited that we have this on our campuses next I have um Dr beatson good evening I think
I have the next two um informational items yes um tonight I just wanted to bring you an update on um the actions and services and programs that we're funding with onetime dollars you've heard me talk about this over the last several years um and we are winding down and so I thought it was important to bring back as we um engage this year around what our next steps will be and so really um I want to review what those grants were what the actions and services that were um using those funding for and then what the implications will be next year and into the future um so as you remember we got almost $14 million in a multitude of different grants that started rolling in in 2020 um covid relief funds each Grant had different
requirements for use um primarily all of them had the uh capacity to do kind of learning mitigation right so and mental health and computer and all of those things and one of the things that we worked really hard at through our lcap and through working with um our CBO and all of you was to lay those grants kind of side by side so we could stretch out that funding as much as possible versus kind of spending it all at one time and so we've been able to do that from since 2020 and um we projected that there was enough funds to do all of the things we put in the lcap this year which we're doing and next year next year we may not be able to do everything because the costs of some things
have increased more than we had expected and so I just kind of want to go through with you where we are with that I'm not going to go through this whole list but this is the list of all the different grants that came in um some had very specific requirements such as the a tog Grant had to be spent on things to help um more students become a tog prepared um Universal transitional kindergarten had to be really spent on roll in the uh transitional kindergarten program so some of them had very specific and others were more General and as you know in our lcap which is where these onetime dollars are living right now um we have uh four goals the first one sense of belonging uh two academic goals one focused on literacy one
focused on math and then one on Equity that really is embedded in all the others and I just wanted to take a second and walk you through these programs because these are the ones that we're going to have to make some very difficult decisions once this money goes because they're all paid with one time Dollar so we have wellness centers as you know at um all of our school sites and um the wellness centers pays for the wellness center technician that works in that Center we have an attendance campaign that has just a little bit of money for some of the um incentives we provided extra supervision so uh noon Duty supervision um AIDS primarily at the elementary site so TP before this money came in we had those folks for about an hour and
a half just to cover that elementary lunch recess time and we have been able to offer um extended hours for them to really help with helping students remember and know how to play and and interact and socialize with other students we offered uh parent workshops we've been able to offer a not offer hire a second mental health clinician and um that person Works primarily with students in special education but not only with um we've offered some great robust professional development including restorative practices um we've brought in um some wonderful speakers that have been working with banisha high school and and coaching all through the year on some of the work that they're doing we added um last year based on feedback from our teachers our teachers union and the need um a new teacher coach
so we have a a person who is a tosa teacher on special assignment who is working strictly with our new teachers in the district to really help them um uh in their practice um and we have a uh curriculum tosa this year that's working on some special projects for us um in the literacy and the new teacher coach is that what are they doing outside of what an induction teacher would be doing so induct that's great question induction really focuses on and Dr Jennings jump in if you you would like induction really focuses on the clearing of the credentials so it's a lot of it is support in the classroom but it's also a lot of ensuring that that new teacher gets in all of their documentation and all of their paperwork and they meet
maybe once a week for an hour but both of those folks are teaching so the new teacher coach is released from the classroom so she's going in and modeling lessons working on lesson planning um observing that teacher and giving feedback so the teacher the new teacher may say really struggling with classroom management can you help me and so there may be some observations she may release that teacher to go watch another teacher so there's more flexibility in that work in literacy and Humanities just quickly we've um increased our ability with Staffing for intervention so students that are in that tier two needing some extra support primarily in reading right now um we have an um another teacher on special assignment who is doing direct service for our what we call our new CER um a
multilanguage learner so students who move in who speak little to no English and so she's doing direct service all day and that is uh TK through 12th grade um we've been able to hire a few extra teachers at the elementary school so that we didn't have to have combination classes during this time we have a partnership with our public library and that person that that contract acts as our district librarian because of credentialing issues we don't what the state requires for uh teacher Librarian Is to be have a teaching credential and a library credential as you well know and we don't have we have Library technicians and so officially we have to have someone that oversees that so that's our bisha Public Library partnership at the ma at the middle school we've been able to
release a teacher for 20% of her math time to do math coaching um they've implemented a new curriculum um uh pretty soon next board meeting I'm going to get to share some very exciting uh data with you around our math schore um once they are public and so she's been working in modeling lessons and writing lessons and working on um uh facilitating collaboration with the math department at the middle school with all of the onset of new technology we've been able to hire an additional it person to help support all of that um we support our Band program at the middle at all levels with some finances for uniform cleaning for maintenance of um instruments we provide Liberty High School with a contract with Arts bisha to provide some arts and steam education for them
both um as a kind of a teacher in residency with partnering with one of their teachers and then as an Afterschool club that happens every week and then um in the equity lens we've been able to continue with providing the wiie be Atkins program for free for any eth through 12th grade student that is interested so those are the programs that have been funded with that um Cadre of onetime dollars whoops it would be good to know going forward like after this year like a cost for each one of those absolutely I can get that so that we'd be able to I mean obviously we're going to have to balance yes it would be good to know what each thing costs I mean you go deeper too I mean could you see what kind of
results we're getting from each of those y absolutely I don't even know if you could quantify all of them but well let me tell you a little bit about how we do that so we have the and I didn't bring it tonight but I can definitely forward it to you in our lcap there's U price tags um attached to each of those and they're the best estimates of what we think things are going to cost um and one of the things that we did with the lcap team several years ago because we knew we were going to have to start winnowing down some of the things that we're offering is we've identified to the best of our ability different data points for each one of those so wellness centers for instance our Wellness Center Tech
collects data every time a student comes in they sort of register how are they feeling when they come in what time of day did they come in how are they feeling when they leave and so it is the best data that we can provide to say is a Wellness Center working um I've asked Willie B Atkins to do some surveys throughout so that we can and take attend like how many kids are attending on a regular basis and what are they saying about the program so we have identified for each one of these some small data points to help us make those decisions I have a question too with um Willie be Atkins can you also ask them to provide you with data on the students who actually went you know who were going to
college or going into a trade um that type of thing as well too absolutely thank absolutely any other questions on this list no just just generally I know we're gonna we're going to have to make some decisions again like we did this this year I guess it was earlier this year um and I was wondering how the plans to you know to look at that again or conduct that analysis soliciting feedback so on and so forth absolutely so we've started meeting with our lcap team and that's one of the big charges because this all lives inside the lcap and so we will be collecting that data we'll be reviewing it with the lcap team we will put out uh we have to collect Community input and typically in in between years because remember it's a
three-year lcap so we're in the first year of a three-year lcap um we'll do some surveys some other Outreach I'll talk with the lcap team about how uh what are all the different ways they want to collect that information and we'll we'll get some feedback on these programs from that as well the hard part is not everyone always that's bad English on my part everyone doesn't always know about all the different programs because their students may not access them so that's why we use um some TR we try to triangulate some of that data and then we'll bring that information to you um with some recommendations from the lcap team that makes sense thank you and then lastly I just wanted to show um at the end of uh last school year we had about
$ three and A5 million dollars in onetime dollars left our P our projected expenditures for this year are about 2 and a half million so that leaves us a little over a million dollars for next school year which is a little less than we were hoping um and sometimes things come in more or we we were able to fill all the position positions that we hadn't been able to fill in the past and then just a reminder that some of that 1 million that's left um may be living in the a tog Grant which is very specific or maybe living in the TK Grant which is very specific and so it won't be a whole million to fund all those things I just went through on the previous slide um I was wondering with the
mental health I I don't know if we're looking for Grants if we have anybody looking for other Grant opportuni ities or other programs or I don't know programs through nonprofits or the county absolutely the county I haven't found any for the mental health um one of our sticking points and I might have brought this to you before when I've applied for some pretty big grants to try to cover some of this because of our demographic we often don't qualify often times many of the big grants are or even not big grants that come from the state require a higher percentage of our un duplicated students um and we just don't we we're sort of in this little space where we don't qualify for most of them I always keep my eyes out and I've asked
people at the county on in different places if you hear of things I actually talked with wiie B Atkins I said if you hear of any grants that we can apply for you know I'm happy to do that work but is it possible to partner with the district so like Val City UniFi School District I know we may have students who transfer in or on transfers is it possible to partner with them because I know their demographics are a lot different than ours so maybe you can qualify I don't know in that way and maybe have a coordinator who actually you know through the grant can actually um kind of work with both districts or something like that that's a great idea yeah I can look into that so that's all I had for you
tonight I just wanted to kind of give you an update because we will be in that process of making those difficult decisions um the only way that I can think of that besides looking for other grants would be to to look in our general fund to try to free up some of those funds to replace so it's really we'd stop doing this and we'd keep doing that or looking at Cola I don't have any idea of what that would be and saying we want to peel a piece of that off to keep this program I don't know any other way at this point that we could start to say we can build those into the general Dr beatson you're up again okay um so um Miss Klein Schmid and I are going to tag team
this presentation a little bit and we also have Miss Lewis in the audience to help um answer any questions but again this is informational it's um I I really hope there's some um things that get us thinking because the state has many new requirements that are rolling towards us um uh great opportunity for students but they add some complexity as we go through trying to figure out how do we give students the most choice and where do these things fit and so the purpose of tonight is just to refresh our memory of where we talked about ethnic studies last spring and then talk with you a little bit about some of the new things that are coming in um so as I just said uh one of my hopes um in our conversation tonight is
for everyone to understand what our current graduation requirements are both by the state of California our bonisha high school current graduation requirements and then the ucsu eligibility requirements and so all of them are slightly different and then I want to review what's coming down the pipe so we have some um future graduation requirements that are mandated by the state and then some potential things that are in conversation but the state hasn't mandated them yet and then finally we have some I wouldn't call them recommendations but but they're the discussions that we're having and so I want to share kind of based on all of that where we are with this and then we'll end with how do we provide this information and get students thinking about this around that communication and Outreach for them okay
um so just quickly Uh current graduation requirements um you can see them here I'm not going to read through all of them for you unless you have particular questions but the state of California has their set of graduation requirements which matches pretty closely to what we have so one difference is we um require four years of English the state asks for three um we have uh a get focused which is one of our own requirements that's in the n9th grade that's a one semester class other than that the requirements are the same for the state and for us when you get to the UC CSU eligibility so those are students who know they want to go to a UC California University their requirements are a little bit different they require four years of English they
require three years of math and that's through algebra 3 so they have to do the math or math three I should say math one math two math three um science is the same social studies they only require two years um language they require two not one so that's a difference as well and um the other big difference is students have to get a c or better in all of those in order for it to qualify what is V oh thank you Visual and Performing Arts sorry and you know I didn't put my acronym list on it I'm sorry I should know that um and then uh for science is that physical science not physics physical science physical science okay two Sciences two lab Sciences okay okay any questions on that all right and then future
and potential so what's coming down the pipe so the first um 1 2 3 four five six the things in black or gray are the same so those don't change what is coming uh has to be offered next year and will be a required for the graduating class of 2030 is one semester class in ethnic studies for the graduating class of 2031 has to be offered in 2728 is one semester class of personal finance okay so those are two they've already passed that's coming one that is being talked about but has not passed yet and I can't seem to find or get a timeline for when that decision will be made from anyone but has been in the news is computer science and that's a one-year uh requirement if it passes and I don't know
where I haven't been able to to like I said land on when that decision is going to be made but so that's another two full years of requirement not two full years two full how do we do that but okay gotcha gotcha we're gonna we're going to explore the puzzle pieces of what this will do um so since I put this slide deck together um we've had more conversation and have some uh different proposals Dr Young uh Dr um Wright doesn't even know this yet so more more feedback we've received D we've grappled with this a little bit more about what the best place and the right place is for these courses and so we know that next year we have to author offer offer ethnic studies originally we were thinking nth grade we had
that conversation um H for it to replace get focused which is one of our own graduation requirements if you remember last spring after more conversation our teachers have done more professional learning um uh we've had some folks move into our district who have taught this in other places as well they feel very strongly that nth grade is not the right place for ethnic studies that our students um are not quite ready to Grapple with what could be just a really robust course and their recommendation is that it move up into the upper levels and so it would still be a one semester course we would still be able to uh potentially at some point offer an AP uh version of either ethnic studies or African-American studies for kids that want to go deeper but that
it it their recommendation is that it would be paired better at a higher level um the benefit of that is it opens up a full year elective for nth grade and right now ninth graders don't have a whole lot of elective space and so it's their entrance into high school and all of a sudden they get so excited to want to take some of the great things that we have in high school but there's really no space for them to take much usually most most kids in nth graders know take a um a world language which is great but it doesn't it's still a requirement if you will does that make sense um next year we have to offer it has to be on the books it's not a graduation requirement next year but we
do have to offer it and if and if no students sign up for it it doesn't have to run I just clarified that today the other piece that is coming is personal finance and this one got more complicated the further we dove into the requirement and so um a couple of weeks ago I called the state to really talk about this idea because one of the things in the bill is that it can replace economics So currently economics is a semester at the senior level um but as we dug further into the bill with the state they uncovered that it's an individual student by individual student right now the way the the legislation is written is that once a student passes person personal finance they can elect to wave economics so it's not like as
a district we could say we want to pull out economics and slide in personal finance which is how I had interpreted how most people had interpreted the bill but whoops as we dug in deeper it's once a student completes and passes personal finance they can um elect to wave the economics graduation requirement so gradu economics stays on the books I don't know if any students will take it I have a a suspicion that that legislation may get revised a little bit because that's going to be um cumbersome for school districts if most if every student has to pass personal finance even if they don't pass it the first time they have to take it again because personal finance is a graduation requirement and once they pass it they can elect to wave economics which means
we may have a course that has nobody in it and we won't know till you have an FTE and you don't know you've already set it aside but you don't know if anyone's going to sign up right and so it gets complicated I say we we kind of are going to watch this we had we had high hopes of trying to move it's easier when you know all the moving pieces and you can say here's what we're going to do but I think we might watch this a little bit because it may the actual the lady that I talked to at the state actually said to start calling your legislators to say this makes no sense this way it should be that you can elect to do it as a whole um Dr be I
have a question um on the first slide for current graduation requirements right now the state requires one semester of econ right is that changing no but student individual students once they pass personal finance when personal finance comes in as a graduation requirement for the graduating class of 203 1 um they can elect to be excused basically from economics which just comp it hurts my brain quite frankly I also I have to say I feel like that what you learn in econ is so important and one of yeah I was wondering you know can you incorporate it into personal finance can you put it in history like just the knowledge of how our economy works is really essential right to being a citizen absolutely and the law is really clear that personal finance has to be
a standalone course it cannot be combined with anything else um uh a lot of the information in personal finance um is that was in get focused Will Roll in and there are pieces of Economics correct me if I'm wrong that will be in um that are some of like the the generation wealth right that's the that personal finance that budgeting all of that will be in there but some of the other Concepts will macro Concepts versus micro Concepts do you want to add anything else with on this slide I don't know it's under the personal finance it says offered 26 27 school year required for graduating class of 27 or offered 2728 required for the graduating class of 28 I thought it was required for the graduating class of 31 it is and so that
it was was our original thinking before the state called me back and said oh no it's individual so we were thinking if we could P it has to be offered the 2728 school year and so what we originally thought was we slide out economics we slide in Personal Finance in their senior year of that 2728 and it would be very difficult to tell students that they had to take that class and so it would be a requirement for that at this point I don't think that is true we're going to wait we still have to offer personal finance the 2728 right you school year we're going to have to offer other things for them to take alongside it I think originally we were thinking it would be clean we would just start it early but
I don't think when is anything ever clean it's not going to be clean could personal finance go in that ninth grade year if it gets combined with get Focus we've had some of that discussion because there are introductory topics about personal finance and get focused but truly personal finance at the level that that you know students are preparing for graduation life after graduation does seem to fit much better at the 11th 12th grade year when they're um getting you know employment starting to think about some of the those topics and decisions that they're going to be making um it definitely has the the microeconomic elements so there's definitely some personal finance embedded in our econ class currently since personal finance isn't a requirement it's offered as a one-year elective or Math course uh and so
it yeah will take a little bit of planning to make sure that we're covering all the standards required and then um looking at what ultimately this state uh provides to us for the econ uh piece of it yeah and then for um for ethnic studies you all are thinking what 10th and 11th grade is that right now um we're uh after some some further conversation we're thinking uh maybe 11th and 12th we're we're trying to figure out can we back up ethnic studies to government so we'd have a year of that and then personal finance and econ or an elective a semester elective forever government and econ have been backed up right yeah I kind of I think it it from my perspective it makes sense to put ethic studies a little bit later because
then students will have had some history classes first and they might just have a better framework um but then you do want to leave room for students who might want to dive deeper in an AP African-American history class so maybe junior year so that they still have that opportunity and we're also exploring is there a way to do Choice like could it be in 11th or 12th grade and because the other reality is when they get up to 12th grade and and Miss kinm talk a little bit more about this there are fewer requirements at that grade level so they have the E right now currently econ and government and English so that's two out of their six classes versus five out of their six classes in ninth grade are just required classes and so
adding some more requirements at that level may be an okay thing well I can speak to a little bit it's part of what we've done in gathering our community feedback along the process of planning for ethnic studies and also just our general feedback that we're always seeking from our community is that they're wanting more opportunities for electives for students every year but especially that nth grade year they're coming in and starting their College and Career prep and we are graduation requirement heavy you could say in 9th 10th and 11th grade and then 11th and 12th grade really opens up opens up the opportunity for more electives is that a little too late right is that a little too late to have uh the opportunity to take courses of interest and courses that arguably connect you
with high school that um could uh be more real world application more interest based especially for those nth and 10th graders so it offers opportunity to start a CTE pathway maybe take an AP course earlier and in uh thinking of the 12th grade year college applications are happening before any grades are issued and so really for a student who is college focused and looking at their GPA those courses are happening 9th through 11th and so we want to open up again those opportunities there to help them plan prepare as early as possible 12th grade year to add uh or maybe shift a requirement there they have technically more time in their schedule more opportunity in their schedule to do that that's that's nice because I I have a ninth grader and it is it is
a big ramp up all an add in a sport and they're worried about their grades in nth grade because they start they really start to count for college um one question I had and I don't know if you know this yet you Pro probably won't know this but this is something to keep in mind I know that as students progress um some try to take a lot of AP courses so How Will adding more required courses down the line affect that I don't know it's just something to consider I guess I don't have an answer I'm just flagging it State keeps I know yeah absolutely but I guess all schools are in the same boat so everybody's you know I think I'm think of that competitive you know I'm a competitive person then I'm like
well then that school's going to get ahead or their their students are going to have more opportunities for these classes but we're all in the same boat in the same boat and and one of the things um in the conversations we've been having is the ability potentially to articulate uh personal finance so that kids can get some college credit for that so that's another bonus um if we look at if we look at that as well and it does have some ramifications right now in our board policy students take have to do two years of math um at least Through Math one and personal finance we offer as a year-long elective that can qualify for their second year of math now once it becomes a graduation requirement we either have to change that we we
have to relook at that so that students who may not want to go through math 2 and math 3 have some options for that second year of mathematics that's G to happen that will happen regardless of where we place these classes um this slide up here is just U to give you the concepts of what will be in personal finance and why we've really looked at this and had those conversations about the placement being later in their High School career is this set by the state yes yep um so that's what's required in coming down the the the pipe and we'll come back with you what what we need to do is um our teachers will start writing the course outlines and that we'll bring back to you for approval for um ethnic studies to
start with and then we'll bring back the graduation requirements because we have to update that board policy as well all of that will need to happen this year so we're we'll start working on that right after this so we were hoping for any feedback that you had and then just other um considerations and things to think about on this next slide um World Language um as you know we offer Spanish and we are finishing out our French program this year so we have French 2 in person it's a two stack in person and we definitely want to honor um the students who want to continue on with French 3 even though that is not a requirement for ucsu entry we know that it's a recommended and so we're looking at what could that look like
and we've got several ideas it could be depending on the number of students so we'll find out how many students plan on going to French 3 it could be an in-person section if we have enough students we could do uh it through an online program we could look into trying to um offer it concurrent ly with like a DVC or a um Solano College we didn't allow anyone to do French one this year we did not do French one this year yeah anybody that was already in gets go through but no one knew gets to commit absolutely so French three next year's French 3 will be the last and that will will will finish out anybody currently in French correct I've had a lot of emails and calls about French 3 and I know the
community's very eager to hear what the plan is and with the very strong preference that it be in person on campus and we'd love to do that we need to make sure that we have enough students that want to and I think that'll be one of the next steps you know you know now that we just hit October we'll go in we'll say who's planning on taking French three and that will help us know which way we need to shape that that so theoretically nobody if you're trying to I know it's not very many people if you're trying to go through French four like if You' start as a freshman you'd have we'd probably end up having to do something outside of a regular class to do or French bo do we even have any
students in currently we do not oh then never mind we have I believe we have 24 students in French two and I don't remember the exact number of students in French three I want to say it's around six but that's a that is a guess the French too I would be curious how many are sophomores I mean theoretically if you're wondering did anyone start as a freshman at one with the desire because we did have that last year people talking about that is there anybody that is looking to go through all four years and I mean if you get below certain you can't but have you know a person in there for that but I was just curious um the other thing that Miss clench did was put out a survey to um parents staff
and students about what their uh hopes and dreams were for a second language because we're committed to bringing in a second language because we know that's um offers a robust program at our at our high school and um sign language and Mandarin were the top two contenders across all uh groups and so we will start doing some investigation partly it's who can we hire who has the credential um and our goal would be that we could start it at the middle school and so that we have a feeder program but again that that's the work uh that this year we will work on that would be great I know there's strong interest for a feeder program how do you know how many people took the survey parents and I think staff took the survey too
or like a percentage did you get a good response um we got so we uh uh Miss Klein Schmid surveyed 7th through 10th graders so it was Middle School through uh high school we had 209 parents um we had 43 staff and 206 students respond to the survey so far another thing to think about which affects graduation requirements which could also open up electives uh a conversation that Miss Klein Schmid's been having with the PE Department currently um we have uh two-year graduation requirement for PE that is a state requirement as well all nth graders take PE one and then someplace between their 10th and 12th year they take PE to and sometimes it's a a straight PE class and sometimes it's weight training or dance or yoga those all qualify um some feedback she's
gotten from student staff and families and was is really trying to find those spots for electives that kids want to take so some schools uh and what's allowable is that students who complete two seasons of a a sport CIF sport or one year of marching band because marching band happens all year can elect to use those extracurriculars as their second year of PE so that frees up because those students are already doing a lot of that work um the other piece that we actually just learned about was that um there is a waiver process for pe2 so in in pe1 students take the um physical fitness assessment and if they pass five out of the six standards they can wave pe2 and so it's something did you want to add anything else to that if
there's any questions but yeah it's some research that we've been doing at the request of students and parents um so one of the things to think about as we're getting ready to bring you new graduation requirements is is this something we want to offer our students to do that and now one question you may have is how does that Impact Staffing um and I know that you've had some conversation with the PE Department do you want to talk a little bit about that absolutely we've done done uh our best to sort of run the numbers of what our estimate would be and we estimate that it could impact uh about 30% of the 10th grade class if they were to want to take this option and looking at that and having conversation with the department
chair of our physical education department um there's experience from other districts that do allow this and um benefits to students in terms of all the time spent for extracurriculars um that they're putting into that and and having that period in their day for maybe another academic class or other choice uh currently our physical education classes are at capacity we had to turn away over 80 students this year who were 11th and 12th grade who wanted to take PE as an elective weight training yoga some of the other classes and so it could have a positive impact in terms of opening up space for students who are looking to take that as an elective Who currently are not able to that's not a problem every year but this year that's that's what we found it's a
testament to your department yes absolutely they their electives are so wonderful yoga weight training um dance we've continued to grow that program thank you uh to that and so it's great to have kids that want to be there yeah any other questions on this one just just one I know we're not here to talk about the content of the classes you mentioned you're going to bring back the syllabus for approval are we going to are you going to do a presentation format and then do an approval for ethnic studies ethnic studies yeah so ethnic studies yes so what we we'll do um after tonight is we will get our teachers working on that course syllabus we will put it out and bring some uh community in to give input and look at it as in
its development process and give feedback ethnic studies is different than any other course syllabus because we bring course syllabi often um is that it has to have a public hearing so I will walk you through that and then we'll bring it back for a um an approval okay and then personal finance it'll be just more of a presentation I'm just really interested to hear where you propose we land on econ um and the and the articulated course too y articulation doesn't always happen does it happen before or during it depends um and we we're going to talk about articulation a little bit but uh typically it will happen as we're developing the course we'll do that along with the Community College Solano being our our regional College if they offer that program um we'll do
that in partnership with them or there's times where we have the course existing and we find the opportunity to add articulation uh we did that recently with our economics class actually so that's now articulated whereas it wasn't before so it can depend um we try to be really intentional about it because it's such a value ad for our students yeah I assume with ethnic studies like personal finance had the concepts and topics that came from the state that ethnics oh absolutely there's it's not like we just get to decide what goes in right they have a model curriculum um pretty pretty broad I mean the state says you can develop your own program basically right but there's got to be topics there are topics and it's there get to choose there's model curriculum there's it's
in the it's in the bill you can choose whatever topics you want as long as it's not discriminatory if you read the bill now the now that the model of the the Department of Education put out a model program which you can use that's optional but there's specific language that was added in there when the bill failed the first time that provides leas with the ability to come up with their own program as long as that program is not discriminatory um our our intent is to base ours off the model curriculum because it has been it has been vetted we looked at many of those um lessons and units when we met this and there's eight outcomes that need to happen with the the um ethnic studies model curriculum and it is based in standards
so you still have to meet that there yeah there has to be some certain standards that you have to hit right sure but I think you know take a close look at those and know that you can yes you know make them work I his getting histor I don't think history was a concept in one of the educational outcomes um which I found surprising well it's I think it's grounded in the history standards and then those are the like the themes if you will and those outcomes well we can get to that but I'm just saying like absolutely there's room just just making up stff me deciding got to be no but there's got to be from the state you you can't just decide I mean I that would really worry me if every local
was able to just decide whatever they wanted in ethnic studies I mean there's got to be a general I me there's got to be a general list of things that I would assume the state would want you to cover yes there are but they they do give way to and some some districts have gone very veered very far off of the model curriculum they're not using it as their basis and they're getting uh some press because it hasn't necessarily been positive well I'm just saying take a close look at everything that you put in the plan and if there's something that you don't like or it doesn't meet your objectives you you know there were some lessons I went back and did a deep dive into the model curriculum and there were some that I
thought just did not meet the be weren't worthy of our students I mean they were not I'd be curious to not good I'll show you yeah I'd be curious I'll show you yeah I have one I can I can send you you can if you take too much out you can reduce the effectiveness of the course I mean what's the concept what's the idea behind even having the course and if you can just decide what goes in and what goes out you kind of lose see and and we did do Outreach because one of the requirements when you're putting this together is to do uh community outreach and get feedback from your community um I'll be honest we put out surveys I went to I think I saw you Mr melli at some festivals so
I went through all the festivals in town and had tables out and and tried to educate and and collect input we didn't get a whole lot of input from Folks at that time um and and as I said uh I think the the model curriculum which doesn't mean you have to do every one of those are sample lessons but they do give some guidelines around you know the four uh ethnic groups that we need to include and then um representing our local community uh and there's a lot of courses I mean there's school districts that have been doing this for a while and there's courses that are already approved through the a UC portal and so forth thank yep and then um so this slide is just what what could our graduation requirements look like
move moving forward so we would keep English as four years the two years of math two years of science three years of social studies with economics still a graduation requirement but it can be waved by individual students a year of uh Visual and Performing Arts language or CTE two years with um that caveat for PE if that's something that um you're interested in us pursuing a semester of ethnic studies and a seme semester of personal finance I'm curious our graduation requirements align with the state in most areas English the state is three years but yet we require four which I get if you're on a college track and theoretically you could still take four why are we requiring four if the state only requires three to graduate it's a great question that uh four years
of English has been in there predates me um I you know I think uh UCCS has a four years and not that we match a to G because we don't but I think the I would imagine most schools offer require four years of English because it is such a foundational skill for all students and so in order to be successful anywhere else they have to be great communicators and writers what no matter what field you go in after if we're I was just curious we're looking for places I mean to get some space you know if that could be something because obviously still not every kid's going into a UC or CSU you know you some kids want to graduate if you maybe you go to a community college or start out with if we
had three years of English required because what are what are the four years of English what are the classes you want to take that one M yeah absolutely so uh nth grade all of our students are doing a nth grade English language arts class based on the expository reading and writing curriculum uh 10th grade is where there's the first opportunity for choice so either the 10th grade course or or uh they can opt to take AP seminar and then uh at 11th grade they have the choice of the 11th grade expository reading and writing course that's actually in partnership with CSU in terms of the curriculum um AP uh AP Lang AP Language and Composition can also still do AP seminar uh that year and then at 12th grade expository reading and writing course or
AP Literature and composition uh we have a few other courses that count as an AP uh an English elective we actually have some colleges here in California now that require five years of English uh cowply being one of them so not all students are going to C poly of course but the foundation behind that is it is a cross-curricular class and students to be career prep uh College Prep are definitely needing the skills the critical thinking the communication skills and the the curriculum we're using now a lot of informational texts a lot of the communication pieces as well so no I yeah that's I just if we're looking for space I mean if you look at the alignment between What It Takes the high school uh State of California requires we align in a lot
of the things and then we're doing that extra year I'm not saying you couldn't do it I'm just saying maybe we look at that as another place because we're looking at you know canceling this reducing PE doing all these other things that might be another place where somebody could get you know CU you are you know you do a lot of reading you know writing in history too and other I'm not saying I'm not trying to reduce English in terms it's very important but if we have to find space that might be another space to you know place we could find something and all those people that want to take five or six years of English whatever for whatever school they're going to they could still do it but not everybody would be required to
do the four years if that wasn't your path just a thought yeah I was just um just thinking thinking about our strategic plan English is number one on there so that would be an area that we would probably want to have further discussion on okay the next few slides I think M clment will go through pretty quickly but just how do we then work with our students and our families around all of these pieces and I'm going to turn this over to you to um have that conversation well I never got to say hello uh so good evening president Zeta and trustees um happy to be here and I appreciate all the kind words earlier um love talking about students love talking about it might sound strange graduation requirements and preparing students for their future
it's uh something that I I'm just very proud to be a part of uh and so I get to talk with you about preparing students to take these courses making sure they have the information they need to plan and be successful and also parent parents are such a huge part of that and so the work that we have been doing and then also the work we continue to do to find Opportunities to improve uh and so lots of considerations I I sort of think of it as fluency there's almost a fluency or literacy to uh High School requirements and college requirements and as much as we have that discussion for a 14-year-old or a 15-year-old to be thinking about this right and and maybe looking for support at home um and they have you know
parents very different levels of of understanding of our system um and the systems that their students might be interested in going into after high school so we take that really seriously um and so we're we're continuing to look at our requirements and of course any changes we would be communicating out uh in all ways possible um always looking at what our College systems are doing because we uh sometimes feel a bit stuck in between and having to adapt to those changes as well uh career preparation um often it's said College and Career prep and sometimes I wish we just said career prep college is included in that for some students and not for others but all of our students will go on to have a career um a lot of work on articulated courses because
the the research shows that students who earn college credit while in high school are more successful after high school as well especially those who go on to college they've already got some of those credits earned as early as nth grade right now which is pretty awesome um also included in this is what grades are they earning are they earning that D or better for graduation C or better for college because they're not always thinking about that in the moment um progression of courses the pathways that are available uh so lots of little pieces one of the big improvements that we made uh and is the next slide is our academic plans in Aries this is something that became available to us when we shifted to the Aries platform it's a really cool tool if we
use it right right so we uh last year our goal was that 100% of our students would have acade academic plans and Aries we hit that goal our next goal is making sure that our students and parents know how to use the tool and so that's our new Focus um I actually uh this is my little ninth graders academic plan uh so she gets to be our guinea pig and so the Orange is the current classes and so when we visit them in eth grade we teach them how to create an academic plan in Aries and uh also how to sign up for their course requests and then we provide that information out to students and parents because often they want to go home and talk more and plan more and what's great is they
can change their mind as many times as they want with this plan we continue to revisit it every year multiple times and encourage them to keep up with the changes on this plan uh it will show them where they are on course so there's three tabs uh the current tab that you're seeing is high school graduation view so we'll show them if they're on track to meet all of the graduation requirements currently in our system there's also a UC College requirement View and a CSU College requirement View and that way they can see if that's their plan are they Meeting those just by simply clicking a different tab they can play around and move them um lock them in place and so the green are those future courses and those can be changed our counselors
find this is an amazing tool um as an administrator we can look forward and look at what are students showing interest in what Pathways look like you know we might need to be considering adding or growing in those areas and then our counselors use this when they meet with students throughout the year if a student drops in uh also with their one-on-one meetings and so it's a great tool to say okay let's let's take a look at your plan what are you thinking about doing oh I changed my mind okay let me show you again how to do that uh and so we want to again step up our game in terms of parents realizing they can look at this and they can have those conversations with students ALS Al I would say yes um
I and I say that because a student won't always say what the principal says but um I say yes because in September we completed meetings with all grade levels of students and their counselor had them get back into this so uh it's happening at least in September again in Janu January for course request time and then in their one-on-one meetings in March so at least three times a year um including that 8th grade January visit yeah and the uh middle school counselors are trained on how to use this and work with students on this as well um our hope is to or not our hope our plan is to create a video uh we're inspired by all the videos uh to be able to post on the website because it's it's easier to watch and
listen and follow along than maybe read through all the instructions um and find some friendlier formats of how to provide that information um in terms of Outreach to students I mentioned our counselor presentations and meetings they do that with uh class level groups and then the one-on-one meetings in the spring after course requests so um they're meeting with them at least three times a year because there's just different considerations different plannings steps to complete especially depending on your grade level so uh I gave the example of our sophomore counselor um has a to-do list for sophomore year right and sends that out to students and parents as well um provided the same presentation out to parents via parents Square so that they could access that information and had um I think 30 or 40 emails
after just for those follow-up questions and meetings uh so good response to that this year one of the things that we're planning to do a little bit different continue to up the game is um have our one-on-one meetings be student L provide students with a template of Google slides that they can then put their academic plan their transcript um their College and Career plans and so they can help lead that meeting with the counselor rather than the counselor leading that meeting with 300 and something students put more Agency on the student again it helps with that fluency it gets them thinking about it more they have to prepare their plan we have time and access that we can use for some of that and then we can say to parents your student has this presentation
they have this plan they're going to be going over this with their counsel and so parents have another opportunity to uh partner with us on that so excited about that change to come later this year uh currently our get Focus Stay Focus class because of the nature of what it covers um it's embedded there as well the the get Focus Stay Focus teachers include a lot of that conversation and reference back to academic plans for that our elective fair if you haven't been I invite you to join us it's a ton of fun during the school day all of our students visit so that they can learn about all of the electives that we offer and ask questions from students who are currently taking the classes it's Hands-On we offer it that same night and
that's late January uh so that our eth grade parents all of our parents can attend uh as part of that at night we have AP info night there's always a lot of questions about advanced placement classes and so we uh set aside a whole room so that uh parents and students can come in and talk with the teachers directly and learn about that we also use our own version of um AP um it's sort of like an AP promise uh when we offered the PSAT for all 10th graders uh several years ago banisha Education Foundation used to pay for that and so all of our 10th graders would take the PSAT well we would get information back that indicated Readiness for AP courses and we would send invitations proactively to students especially our students who
are more underrepresented in our AP classes even though that um has ended we now do that work our our El and uh make sure to go out and personally invite students to consider AP classes so that we're doing a better job of of opening that door um and then our school newsletter it's very long I know there's a lot in there but we make sure to continue to offer the information as another resource uh so that it's timely based on the season uh for students and so that parents have a place to access that so that's that's another General resource um our parent parents also have the opportunity to go to college info night that's coming up on October 15th and we offer a financial aid uh information night virtually on October 22nd um we
have our College and Career Center which we're excited to uh welcome a new College repur Center technician soon and that's an awesome resource they uh run workshops during access so right now we have a college application lab every Wednesday to walk students through the process we have college reps visit trades visit we do a career speaker series and we work to uh provide a just really a range of different Industries um different trades different levels so that students can come and learn about what occupations are are out there and those are all regional to us um so just really trying to provide as many opportunities as possible for students to find information um and then for parents to be able to reach out to someone to sit down together ask questions get help um because
it is tricky if you haven't done it before or if the last time you did it was when you went to college it's changed a lot and so it's really nice to have just that person to to sit down with you and help um I know I've covered a lot so I do want to pause in case there's any questions so far okay all right well in in conclusion so the academic plans and Aries as I mentioned that's really our Focus to continue to maximize that tool um and to make sure that parents have that as their tool as well it's a quick way to identify is my student on track are there any gaps um are there any changes uh so that they can be a part of that conversation and and make sure
they're informed as well thank you I just want to say thank you this this was one of the things that I did ask for so I really appreciate um you sharing this and providing us like an in-depth understanding and I really hope that you know parents and students really take advantage of it so so that there aren't any surprises when their student is in 12th grade and then they're like what classes should I've taken so absolutely so yeah so thank you when I apologize I realized I actually missed one part which is our students with individualized uh education plans students with IEPs that's also become a focus for us in transition meetings coming into nth grade we have that discussion so that they also understand um if the students considering College uh eligibility the a
through G and then we continue to have that at all iup meetings so that we're making sure that um we address that as well because that's one area where we're seeing not as many students ad tog ready and going to college so we're trying to address that great thank you very much thank you Miss Klein Schmid and thank you Dr beatson absolutely appreci last questions we know it was a lot um there's a lot of pieces and we're going to need move rather quickly now to get things prepared to bring back to you any thank you other questions I just wish this was available when I was going to school getting into college it was like you're on your own and I just want to thank um Miss Lewis because yes well while all of
this happens uh primarily first at the Comprehensive High School she does an amazing job um trying to make sure not trying making sure that her small But Mighty School fits in all the graduation requirements for the students who need them and so um it's it's a puzzle thank you Miss Lewis also for making that happen for our students so um I'm going to go ahead and move on to the next item which these are our action items um first is consideration and approval of resolution 24-2-11 and I believe Roan Egan is g to be chatting with us about this great good evening um the motion not motion discussion action item in front of you tonight is for the award of the contract for the bonisha high school elevator upgrades to Dream Ride elevator um they
