while everybody's taking a seat I am going to call us back from closed session it is now 6:00 pm on the 15th of February and there are um let's see where am I okay this meeting is being recorded for live streaming on the archive distri the district YouTube channel so now we're going to do our pledge and I just saw a bunch of adorable children walk in and so I'm going to ask you guys to stand up first and lead us in the pledge tonight the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liy and justice for all thank you guys that was great okay um next up is our approval of the agenda can I get a motion to approve the

agenda as written please I move that we approve the agenda as written thank you may I get a second I'll second thank you roll call please one second you're going a little faster for me I'm sorry okay president s yes rebs yes trusty Meli yes and trusty hir yes thank you okay now we're going to move on to our highlight and I'm gonna bring Dr Wright up here to talk to you about all this it's exciting stuff all right good evening um at this time I would like to introduce Christina Moore principal at Robert simple Elementary School [Applause] wait oh my apologies hi again I'm Christina Moore principal at Robert SLE and I have the absolute honor to present to you sandre Oaks um accompanied by her son Trevor Oaks um the reason that we

are here today is because something really special happened at Robert simple about a week or so ago um Sandra is not only a parent first at Robert simple but she is also a special purpose Aid in our Rise program um our students with special needs and as always our AIDS um accompany our students to lunch every day make sure they have what they need and last week or the week before last sandre noticed that one of our students one of our six-year-old students had gotten up unusually unex expectedly and ran over to a bucket and was coughing into the bucket and Sandra's mom instincts kicked in and she quickly realized that he was choking and could not breathe and Sandra performed the heick maneuver which then dislodged his air um the thing that was causing

him to choke he was able to regain breathing and basically saved the life of a six-year-old student and I could not think I I could not be more proud um to be able to give her this opportunity to be honored but this is just the kind of person that she is and so to sandre you are a hero to me and to our St picture I don't have phone and um we just want to honor you on behalf of the school district and also Senator Bill DOD has a certificate of appreciation for what you did thank you can I thank you thank you and Dr wght I believe you're going to continue yes at this time our highlight is from Matthew Turner Elementary School and I would like to introduce Miss Aaron Buchanan thank you

thank you very much hello and good evening um I am the office specialist at Matthew Turner I'm feeling in for principal Slater tonight who wishes he could be here um because this is a very fun opportunity to showcase what we've been up to at our school and introduce some um pretty amazing people we've got some great students here tonight um thank you for the opportunity to present um we're going to share a little bit about our steam week and family steam night um joining me tonight to talk more about it I'm sorry I'm emotional from sandre I know her um growing up and so a little shaky um uh joining me tonight to talk more about the week um is our PTA member diversity equity and inclusion representative and um steam week coordinator and steam

week magician extraordinary Wendy burish um and some of our fifth grade students um Alex berer Benedict Figaroa Angelo Garcia Elise kinman cor Loro and Aaron Rosenthal um we've as asked each of our students to prepare a slide and talk a little bit about each of the themed days during the week um so with that um I'm going to pass it off to Wendy to get us started and uh thank you very much thank you very okay hi I'm Wendy burish um I am a mom of three two are at Matthew Turner and one's at the middle school this is my fourth year doing the uh Matthew Turner uh steam week steam night I've planned and coordinated all of it uh the first year I started was during covid so it looked a lot different than

it is now um but this year we did quite a few things because we had a pretty large budget to work with um before I get into the week I will let's move on to the next slide and I'll tell you why uh steam is important so it helps children it helps teach children to learn um it helps encourage kids to sharpen their observational skills uh to look for patterns to analyze results and to predict observations and outcomes uh the second point is less gender-based stereotypes and fewer obstacles regarding steam uh when I was was in college I had my first experience with um working with uh steam uh I had the opportunity to volunteer for a group of girls because we were trying to encourage more girls to get into the science field I

was an an anthropology class at the time and um and I think that's probably why I'm really passionate about this and I really want the kids my kids and all the kids at our school and in our district to really learn all of this um it's great experience um gender gender stereotypes so basically a back especially when I was a child uh you would look around and there are a lot of males in the professions that um in in the steam Fields but now we're starting to see it change a lot and I think if we continue doing this then we'll start seeing a lot of you know different people in those positions um okay it also positively positively impacts perceptions and dispositions towards the steam field re research has shown that providing Hands-On steam

experiences for elementary age children positively impacts their perceptions and dispositions toward the steam Fields um they're capable of kids are capable of understanding engineering design uh at their level and they're also able to work collaboratively and grasp basic steam Concepts so um they also Thrive using natural senses of curiosity exploration experimentation observation and critical thinking skills um and they benefit from opportunities to work together as a team as well as from the exposure to new ideas so you want to do the next slide so it's also fun so as you see here there's a bunch of our our kids having a lot of fun you want to skip next one okay okay so uh here's here's our uh steam week this was the agenda that we came up with so on Monday we had Lawrence

Hall of Science come in as I said we had a larger budget so it was really fun to be able to provide extra activities for our kids so we had um lures Health Science they had a big um engineering a big building Festival in our a multi-purpose room and we did it all day long and had different groups of kids and it was really amazing technology day uh was a virtual field trip uh from through shabbo Space and Science Center and it was called The Chill Zone it was they were learning about melting ice and what types of things um would make that melt ice melt faster uh there was an engineering day on Wednesday where they had kids had an engineering challenge with uh things made up of all different recycled materials um art

day they learned about tessellation and math day was a teacher's Choice math game so and then here our wonderful kids to tell us all about the uh the fun that they had for for the weekend the night thank you all right Aon I don't see why don't you like to come hi I'm hi I'm Aon Rosenthal and today I'm going to pre be presenting the S and steam wig science what were some of the activities we did for Steam for science well there was many different building activities like origami magnets paper rockets and so much more my favorite activity well I didn't really have a favorite activity I think all of the activities were fun and creative but why do we do these activities well we do these activities to help kids be creative and

learn new things and it's also like I said fun thank you all right Angela would you like to come up Tuesday was our technology day students attended a virtual field trip with shabo space science center science center learning about melting ice while conducting the experiment in their classroom the kids made H the kids made hypotheses and tested which which would melt the ice f cold water hot water sugar or salt and recorded the data every 10 minutes about what was happening with the ice thank [Applause] you hi I'm Elis Kinsman I am so thankful to have this opportunity I'm here to talk to you about engineering do you like to do engineering for engineering day the fourth and the fifth graders made many cities out of cardboard tape paper and a few other materials the

TK through third graders did a similar activity but they made obstacle courses out of cutting and folding paper they made the obstacle course for a toy car to go through both of these activities led us use our imagination and building skills to create a masterpiece and that's what we did for engineering day thank you for listening [Applause] it's very high hi my hi my name is coral lorno and I'm so grateful I get there you go hi my name is coral Loro and I'm so grateful to be here and talk all about art and steam why is Art so important in Steam art is important in Steam because it is a way to express yourself on a piece of paper whether you're using colored pencils paint bits of tomato covered in chocolate my class did

a fish tessellation art which is an art an art that like you take like forms or shapes and you repeat it every few inches or so I feel the art is important because everywhere you go it is around us from paintings to our food yes even gas station Pizza thank you nice well [Applause] done on Friday teachers chose and led their favorite mathematics games throughout the day in the classroom and took some time to reflect on the amazing week we had and celebrate the inspirational collaboration amazing teamwork and wonderful experiences learning new things thank [Applause] you hi I'm Benedict and I'm Alex and we're on here for this wonderful meeting and today we're going to talk about steam night well this picture this picture shows the schedule okay so these pictures show uh a bunch

of the activities we did during steam night like here's some o tinkering and by yeah and more well what did we do at steam night well during steam night students explore a ton of different steam related activities throughout the school the activities some of these activities include Rubik's Cubes balloon Rockets snap circuits slime and B Bots just to name a few well my personal favorite activity were the snap circuits because it presents a simple way of getting people into electric engineering yet still has things for more skilled people due to the more Advance tools I like balloon Rockets CU you have to fill your balloon to a certain amount of air pressure to make it go to the end it includes more thinking than you would think because if you feel it too much it'll

fly off High School volunteers were at most stations helping scholar do the steam KN night activities why is steam night important well we think steam Knight is important because it shows us a way to express our curiosity and use teamwork to solve problems and steam Knight gives us an opportunity to show this thank you thank thank you again for um allowing us the opportunity to present uh this evening just want to give another warm Round of Applause for all of our brave [Applause] students thank you so much you know kids you all did a great job coming in up here and speaking in front yes yes let's pull all of you guys up here Miss Martinez will take a group picture yes teachers one [Music] more thank you thank you for a great [Applause] job

can stick around I'll leave it up to you all right we're moving on to the superintendent report Dr Wright right good evening um I'm looking forward to tomorrow night as night of stars it's an opportunity um for the district to celebrate the employees of the year and also law staff for the work that they do um with our students every day so it's tomorrow night at Northgate so I'm really looking forward to that event um just as a reminder um our schools are closed next week uh for president's week holiday the district office is open on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday but the school sites will be closed next week so just as a reminder we we do have a recruitment Fair scheduled so if you are looking for employment or if you have a friend

or colleague that's looking for employment February 29th from 3:30 to 7:00 right here at the district office please help us spread the word and come on by um we will be doing interviews um here at our facility and lastly um you can go to bonisha unified.org for factual information regarding measure c um you can look at our uh facilities master plan you can also look at the board resolution which identifies some potential projects so that's just on our district website and that's for factual information and that's all I have for this evening thank you thank you very much and now we're at board reports do any of my colleagues oh Mrs KBS so I had the very fun experience of going to the Matthew Turner fifth grade wax museum this week and I I have

to tell you it's something that I just I enjoy so much um the kids researched they wrote letters and personally interviewed U people and their subjects I learned about Jane Goodall I learned about tennis I learned about one person um I learned about uh our own Hometown hero Harold Bray and that was so interesting um another very interesting um they were all super interesting I have to say so another one that really stood out to me was hot dogs it's like how do you know so much about hot dogs and and the person who did it he was dressed in a hot as a hot dog and so it was really fun but all the kids did such a great job many of them memorized their speeches and um you know they were so brave

to go and interview people and um and write those letters and get information back and do those do the research so anyway just shout out to uh to the fifth grade at Matthew Turner and to every single one of those kids it was fantastic thank you nice thank you m gr anybody else I know who the hot dog was though yes too you know like Miss scrubs I went to uh the fifth grade wax museum my son was the hot dog um I initially was a little skeptical about the choice of the hot dog because I thought maybe is he taking this seriously but he did take it seriously and gave a whole history on why is the hot dog called a hot dog and the person who invented the hot dog and where this

person got to start and um I have to you know just I think you've summed it up perfectly I also want to add that from the parents standpoint these kids did it all themselves there was not an opportunity for any parent to go in and try to write their kids speech ni um they did it all at school and it was all done by the kids and the public speaking skills the organization and the writing wow it was it was excellent so Bravo that was a big a big day for our fifth grade um I also attended steam night uh my son was sick but we went and not him me um and I think this was the biggest steam KN I've seen in years it was packed and the whole school is used all

the different rooms I love the tinkering room probably that's my favorite everybody's in there just building it's very loud um and then lastly I just want to mention our soroptimists I went to sip with a Soroptimist which was their annual Gala at the clock tower it was a beautiful event lots of people were there and and just kind of to highlight them doing great things in our little Community thank you Miss H and U Mr melli do you have anything and I don't have anything to report out this week either so with that said we're going to move on to comments from members of the public all functions of the board meeting including public comments will take place in person members of the public May address the board at a regular meeting on any I

uh any item within the board's jurisdiction speaker cards are available at the entrance table please note the item you wish to speak to and submit a card to the board secretary the board president will call the Open Session I the sorry call all the Open Session item you wish to speak to to the board secretary sorry General comments um during the public com comment item comments on items on the agenda will be call during the specific item comments are limited to no more than three minutes per speaker or the board May limit the total time to 20 minutes per item with the timer displayed on the monitors by law no action may be taken on any item raised during public comment periods and matters may be referred to staff replacement on a future agenda of

the governing board please be reminded to keep your comments respectful as students may be watching the meeting thank you and I do see that we have two two people here that would like to speak first one is is it Eli Ro roblas yes okay please thank you for being here um good evening trustees and community members um so my name is Eli robless I'm representing the Northern California Carpenters Union um and just want to extend an invitation um for our women and construction event uh we would like to invite your Juniors and seniors out it's going to be held on uh March 15th from 10: to 1 pm and um we'll be having Hands-On activities they they'll be able to network with contractors uh and then also lunch will be provided and they'll have raffle

prizes um we just asked that you know if you can call ahead in RSVP and that way we have enough food for everybody um I left some flyers here you know with the secretary and um you guys are welcome to make copies and spread the word thank you thank awesome thank you that sounds wonderful thank you very much for being here and our next speaker is Sher Lee good evening everyone um I am Sher Lee and some of you have read my articles about the lamigo games and I want to um bring that back to your attention I am a former or retired school counselor and being here is bringing back all that nostalgic stuff it's really great what is happening in the schools here but what is happening in the community is something that

we all need to address and I know you have you stand with me on this that the lamra game is something that we need to stop now um and my concern is spring is coming and we've got another one coming up hopefully not but um I think we need to be prepared for it I've partnered up with uh well do I've been working with Dr Wright quite a bit and I appreciate his responsiveness and his proactiveness in getting the kids engaged in fighting this um this event that happens annually the game is racist based the game is trauma inducing the game is bullying promoting bullying promoting and violent Pro violence promoting and it really impacts Public Safety um but I understand as you've read my articles I've tried to write it from as many perspectives

as possible why the kids are doing this what some people think about it um we need to have more activities for our kids and and saying that I am bringing with Mario ceedo who is the director of the salano AIDS Coalition and the the producer of many various cultural events to this community on uh March 23rd um it is a fiesta Prim Vera uh celebration and I hope I want to invite you all to be there and celebrate and stand together with the entire Community because this is all of our problem against the games it's a way to educate and bring culture of particularly in this case the Latino and the Mexican and indigenous cultures that are being targeted by this game um but it is inclusive for everyone we're going to have educational activities

we're going to have cultural events we're going to have children's activities and engaging the teens as much as possible so I I want to invite you all to be there it will be spectacular vibrant and very eye-opening my hope is that it will it will encourage benians not to look the other way but to stand tall and say we're not going to tolerate violence we're not going to tolerate racism we're not going to let our children emulate the brutality that's going on between the immigrants and um the uh officers that are chasing them we want to make this a welcoming Community thank you thank you thank you Sher and and thank you so much for putting all that time in to make this actually happen and thank you Dr Wright for being a big part

of that as well so kudos to both of you thank you all right next is our approval of the consent calendar background information on these items is provided by the board prior to the meeting common motion takes place common uh motion takes action without discussion on a roll call vote unless discussion of certain items is requested by the board members so at this time I would like to see if we can get approval of the consent calendar as written I uh move that we approve the consent calendar is written thank you may I get a second thank you uh roll call please president s here yes trusty grubs yes trusty Mel yes and trusty H yes thank you okay I also um would like to acknowledge that we received a generous gift of $1,500 from

the Rotary Club of bonisha um for the BHS girls soccer team so thank you very much and then we need to do a second roll call um on resolution number 23- 24-18 regarding obsolete books presiden say yes trusty grubs yes trusty Meli and trusty hsh yes thank you thank you thank you okay um Mr rill you're going to share some information about student enrollment yes thank you we have this for your information tonight it is our projected student enrollment for the next school year uh 2425 and we have charted our enrollment Trends all the way back to to uh 2011 so 13 years of enrollment here in our school district um you can see 13 years ago and for several years thereafter we were floating right at a pretty steady 4,900 students throughout our at

that point just kindergarten through 12th grade 4900 um and then in the mid teens starting in probably about 2015 or so we started declining like the of the state and a little bit at first and then kind of um significantly more especially during the covid years and so since about 2122 uh moving forward and projected into next school year we are floating just under 4,400 students so that's um you know a pretty significant change a drop in over 500 students you know in uh five to seven years it's happening it's not unique to bisha um we've actually uh I think managed it a little bit better than some of the other districts and one of the thing to really take note in on this graph starting in 2122 where you see the Flatline and it's

a little misleading because what's happened in the recent years is the state has added transitional kindergarten TK and we are now phasing in we're almost fully phased in for foure olds to come to public school and get a transitional kindergarten um we're not quite there not all four year-olds um are it's not they're eligible yet but pretty soon two years y yep so but what that's doing is it's kind of it's masking or the the the TK enrollment that we're getting anywhere from 24 to 48 TKS each year it's kind of masking the K12 decline that we're seeing um and so once we get fully implemented uh with all the four-year-olds in TK over the next couple years hopefully our enrollment stays stable Right Around The 4400 Mark but it'll be interesting to see if

we see um you know that go down because at that point we'll be fully uh enrolled with our four-year-olds something to watch um we roll the grade levels forward that's pretty consistent with what happens they the grade levels change a little bit um but at this point we are um projecting basically the same enrollment that we have this year at uh 4375 and that number does include um 48 uh additional fouryear olds into our TK program we are very confident that we'll have at least 24 for one new TK classroom and the numbers so far at this early date of February 15th are indicating that TK numbers are probably going to be higher I think they're trending higher than before so we're it's it is probable um that we will have two new TKS next

year um so um this this current year I believe we only added one just based on what four-year-olds came to our schools but um next year it looks like we'll we're we're right now we're sure about one we're making plans for two in case we need it and we'll move forward on that in in a month or two when we have a little bit more solid TK enrollment numbers so enrollments open right now and so if if folks are in the area or will be coming to our district you know they can go to their to their school and enroll for next year including foury olds nice thank you thank you very much Mr rill and I I think the more that the program is being talked about about it you know in the community

I think more people will probably send their young ones with you know to us to learn so thank you for that information appreciate it um next up are our action items the first thing is consideration and approval of the comprehensive site and District safety plans and Mr um Thompson is here to present thanks for being here thank you morning for good afternoon everybody um so uh I'm here it should be a brief uh presentation of what we've done with our uh safe school plans this year um this year focused a lot on compliance with a lot of Law changes and stuff that needed to be added um and then going through the California Department of Education compliance tool kind of turned up some things we needed to add um so I always like to start

with the slide for everyone to show that kind of visual representation of how we're a unified district where we also have unified plans um so of course each site has specific policies Maps um things like that there's obviously difference between uh primary and secondary uh protocols that we have to do at those sites but for the most part our core uh response plans and emergency plans are the same with the idea that as our kids go up through the schools they're learning the same Concepts they're reinforcing the same Concepts so it isn't suddenly a shock or a change when they go to a different site um and I know principal Lewis at Liberties very happy that she got the new Eagle that she was been asking for few years um so the main compliance changes

that we have this year we are now compliant with s sp10 melanies law which has to do with the opioid overdose protocol so I know the information that came from Sal County Office of Ed highlighted that on our campuses it's more likely that our guests our adults are going to overdose than our kids um and so having protocols in place to be able to respond to that is important uh I worked with our district nurse Mr lello um and you know have a plan in place that uh mimicked Sano County offices um uh protocol and both th and I are happy with it that's now embedded in all of our plant um in compliance with s SP 323 uh we now have more specific adaptations for our of special needs so before it was more

of a generalized section that said kind of how we did now we actually have specific so like for example um there are diagrams of the type of holds that are used for let's say a student that might have a wheelchair well if there's an earthquake or a fire and maybe that Earth that wheelchair can't be used through a certain path then there's some holds that can be used to carry that individual out um So the plan actually now clearly defines and shows that versus just talking about it all right uh looking at the California Department of Education compliance tool there were uh four things that were added from that three of them were recommended not required um but you know they were good ideas so and we had the information so I figured to include

it uh we did add expulsion and suspension procedures that's copied straight out of Dr oic's student handbook so you why reinvent the wheel so that's a straight Port uh we had to add schoolwide dress code because uh the law states that if you have any dress code language that outlines um Gang Related apparel it should be in the plan so that's been added um roles and responsibilities and facility use during emergencies again those are just kind of common stuff that needed to be kind of bued up and then uh principal kinman at the high school was notified by our uh conference CIF that they do want uh safety to start entering and from the athletic side of things so um I've already met with our athletic director Justin Keen um and we're going to have

some stuff in place for fall when we begin you know next year um so that we're eventually doing drills and having kind of some safety-minded practice during after school activities because we do it all during school we do it during class um but we haven't really thought much about the baseball field or the softball field or things that can happen there so um that work will uh commence like I said this this it'll commence now and hopefully be in place in the fall and then finally uh as always uh schools looked at their data uh saw if there was any patterns and then adjusted protocols as needed thank you course thank you does anybody have any questions no nice job thank you appreci thank you so much um it's an important plan to have in

place so hopefully we never have to use it I agree right thank you so much of course um and finally this evening um we have consideration an item oh we have to vote yeah oh I'm so sorry real uh can I get a motion please I'll move to approve the site and District safety plans as presented thank you get a second second roll call V vote please M Martinez yes trusty GBS trusty melli yes and trusty hsh yes thank you thank you thank you okay now we're going to move on to consideration and final approval of the par supplementary retirement plan for BD and I'm going to turn it over to Dr Wright who knows all okay uh at the uh December 12th 2023 uh governing board me uh meeting our uh board members adopted

a resolution to initiate the process for the uh pars supplementary retirement incentive for all eligible employees and after a close analysis the district has determined that the plan May generate a savings of approximately $2.6 million over a fiveyear uh period and we feel like that's enough for our district to meet our fiscal and operational objectives and for this reason uh the district's recommending that the governing board adopt uh approve the par supplementary plan um as written thank you can I get a motion please I move that we approve the par supplementary retirement plan I get us thank you and roll call please miss yes trusty GBS trusty melli yes trusty H yes thank you great so at this time I'm going to close our meeting by saying um our next board meeting is March 7th

we hope you have a nice holiday week off next week and 6:45 bye
