brainstormed some ideas on how we could involve the community I then went and visited a few different um companies that are locally owned uh began conversations with the owner of Pizza Pirate who agreed to work with us um and so tonight I am recognizing Patrick Abshire who unfortunately is not here through email he said he was planning on being here this evening but regardless uh the partnership that we created was for March April and May of the school year um seven pizzas each month so that at each school we could honor one student that had perfect attendance uh the goal behind it was the student would receive a certificate for dine in at Pizza Pirate and would be able to provide their family with a pizza so um in my email communication with Pat Abshire
last week he said that he plans to continue this partnership in the future so I don't know exactly what that will look like but it is a partnership that I wanted to recognize in front of the school board this evening thank you Mr Abshire if you're watching we appreciate it all right next is our uh reports and it's the superintendent's report so Dr Wright okay good evening I want to start my report by thanking our incredible Community Partners not only Pizza Pirate who's been a great partner of ours but we had a night of the Stars event back on the 26th and uh required assistance from a lot of people within our community to put it together so I do want to thank Chelsea Whitney um who's a parent in our district she did an

mayor was there all the city council members were there and that was a really cool event it was a small group but um very much appreciate it so thank you I was able to go to Liberty and the high school and Damon if you decide you don't want to be superintendent you're speech is really good you write I was we were talking last night it bought you I'm like man I've been to a lot of graduations and stuff and yours are like the best you really it was just very impressive you're really good writer man I know my time is up but when I looked on my bullet points I skipped something and I think I wanted to share it out that's okay I just also our Community Partners Ariana Martinez who uh campaigned for
the area 5 trust DC she donated the remaining of her campaign funds to our school district to support mental health and I just wanted to make sure that I shared that out and I I'm sorry I skipped it the first time around yeah so it's about 456 dollars so um yeah it was great great gesture then we are going to move on to items from members of the public but there's no members of the public here but I will read what I normally read all functions of the board meeting including public comments will take place in person members of the public May address the board at a regular meeting on any item within the board's jurisdiction speaker cards are available on the entrance table please note the item you wish to speak to and submit

is 11 approval of the consent calendar background information on these items is provided to the board prior to the meeting a common motion takes action it takes action without discussion on a roll call vote unless discussion of items is requested by the board members may I get it or can't is there a for something on the floor right now to accept this motion um I'd like to recommend the approval of the consent calendar as presented thank you is there a section thank you roll call vote please doesn't say that yes yes yes okay and there's a couple things that I need to um talk about in here um one I guess are you coming up Mrs Rice no 13B 13. we did the minutes acceptance of gifts to the district 11b so where where are
the where's the list is there a list somewhere absolutely oh here I found it I found it 11b sorry um the first item is a check to the Benicia High School leadership from Solano Association of Realtors foundation for 1973.85 that's and there was also another donation gift of for it was a 1950 it is a 1950s trumpet to the Joe Henderson Elementary band from Kimberly Klein and the value is five hundred dollars Mrs Klein thank you also for your donation we are going to move back to consideration and approval of resolution 22-23-18 um can I get a motion please do we still need to do a roll call yes thank you yes trustee Moss yeah yes okay then we're going to move on to the next resolution number 22-23-20 roll call please yes yes okay
next the consideration and approval of resolution number 22-23-21 may I get a roll call please I didn't say that yes yes all right um just a few more here um consideration and approval of the resolution number 22-23-22 roll call please yes okay and uh I believe this is the final one consideration and approval of resolution number 22-23-23 because I don't say that yes Secrets yes yes excellent and then consideration and approval of the 23-24 designation of the CIF is that was that included so that was included in the initial okay okay moving on number 12. we have no presentations or communication or informational items tonight so we're good um 13. the first item up is consideration and approval of the adoption of curriculum for elementary third through fifth grade history science history social science now
you're on Mrs Rice thank you for being here good evening everyone I am Stephanie Rice Director of Education Services and before I get started I do want to just say thank you all for all that you have done it has been a wonderful year I am a mom of a graduating senior and it was beautiful and I just appreciate you for that as a mom so I am here tonight also as director of educational services and I am here for your consideration and hopeful approval of curriculum for our third through fifth grade history social science um the company is McGraw-Hill and the title of the curriculum is impact California social studies uh but the behind the scenes of of piloting this program uh we had all four Elementary sites uh represented third through fifth grade
um they went through the protocol that I've shared with you in the past and just a quick recap is they go ahead and look at several different programs so we narrow it down we narrowed it down to two and then they pilot come back and talk along the way and we go through our rubric protocol of identifying how it relates to the standard and framework assessment engagement usability and also equity and access so uh impact science or history social science came out ahead and um some of the highlights that our teachers shared is that um the engagement from their students was high the kids really liked the inquiry projects that sums up the end of the unit for example in third grade one of the first units at the end they have a choice to
create a television ad or a song or a synonym list or something else that might spark their interest to really show their knowledge either individually or as a group for the inquiry um question that every unit composes third grade is our community our County fourth grade is California and then fifth grade is U.S history and just to give you a little overview of one of the grade levels third grade starts out with communities in California and they really drill down to how does geography impact those communities and then they go into how people influence our local regions and they dig deep into Native Americans and how our communities were formed starting with the Native Americans in our regions they talk about how life has changed for people in communities how and why and then they
go into American symbols citizens and government and then the economics of the local regions so they take them from you know learning as a whole in California and really drill down to your community and um with this curriculum we have it available um textbook paper pencil and also digitally online which allows for a lot more scaffolding as far as it could be read in English and Spanish um they can drill down and annotate within the online text into the vocabulary words they could highlight over that and get a bigger definition as well as the teacher can adjust the reading level for the student so it looks very similar to what everybody else is reading but can allow access for all kids so um it was an overwhelming vote from our four elementaries to hopefully adopt
impact California history social studies do you have any questions it looks like we do not have any questions okay so at this time can I get a motion please I move that we approved the third fifth grade history social science commission thank you may I get a second thank you roll call please yes great thank you and I'm glad you stayed with us on to the next item for Spanish four Mrs Rice all right yes I am bringing forth for your consideration a hopeful approval of the course outline for high school for Spanish four and um some key highlights for you to know is that this is a year-long course offered uh to 10th through 12th grade students the prerequisite is completing Spanish three or Spanish three honors if this course is approved they will
use the adopted curriculum for Spanish for which you approve through cinderos our we will use our internal um uh Staffing to teach this course uh the why though for bringing this forward is we want to be able to offer that fourth year of Spanish um outside of AP so it gives the opportunity for students that are not wanting to go the AP route to continue in learning um Spanish as a world language course which also opens up the opportunity for our students if they so choose to um qualify for the psyllophile literacy which one of those pieces is completion of four years of in a language other than English so this just opens that door for our students that are choosing not to go the AP route and um that in this course it will
be taught primarily all in Spanish if you look at the course outline they they outline everything the students are doing right in the language for example and bear with me that como se espressa El humor in Las differentes culturas so one of the things we're going to do is explore how humor is represented in different cultures and they go really deep in expression um and then they also do inquiry-based projects all in the native language Spanish such as them creating a website aim for helping they one of the things is helping an exchange student from a Spanish-speaking country get acquainted with your city so it connects to something that they know and they really use a lot of expression is that next level in in our language courses so I was just really impressed in
wanting to take this to the next level but also offer that opportunity for students that are not wanting to take the AP path any questions on the course outline so um is there emotion on the table for this item C I'll I'll move to approve the adoption of the Spanish for Force outline is written thank you may get a second second thank you roll call please Mr Martinez yes thank you thank you thank you um now we're going to move on to consideration and Adoption of the 2324 budget for the Benicia Unified School District and I'm going to invite Mr I missed you Leslie I am so sorry consideration and Adoption of the 2324 local control and accountability plan the lcap Dr beatza would you please join us and share with us your knowledge here

thank you thank you yeah we have this um item for your approval adoption uh the 2324 budget which also was presented at the last school board meeting at the public hearing um there's one change one revision to a question uh is enrollment declining in both the budget year and the prior year it's check no in the page two of the report so we'll revise that to check yes we are declining enrollment other than that it's um the same that was presented are there any questions no okay can I give it a motion to approve the adoption the consideration adoption of the budget we approved thank you and may I get a second we're so polite we're so polite up here it's awesome okay did you get that yes you got it okay I went with
trustee Moss okay roll call please oh president say that yes trustee grants yes trustee Moss yes thank you uh next up is consideration and approval of the intent to employ with provisional internet internship permit Dr Gill welcome thank you good evening trustees um superintendent community members um so miss Aaron Bieber is one of our long-term special education teacher this current year she's working as a tosa and uh um she does qualify to become the program specialist which does require a Anatomy credential she's at a point in her I don't know credential now we can actually do a waiver so she's far along in the program that she qualifies for this waiver so we're just bringing it to you that while she's completing the program if you approve then we will be able to employ her
as a program specialist which will help our teachers and our students in the special education program tremendously well that's nice I like Aaron Bieber um are there any questions you know okay can I get a motion please I'll move to approve the intent to employ Aaron Bieber and 100 uh full-time position as a program specialist behaviorist for the 2023-2024 school year with a provisional internship permit thank you may I get a second I will second thank you may I have a roll call please Mrs Martinez yes okay and our last item of this evening is consideration and approval of the Juneteenth holiday for benich Unified School District employees Dr Wright I'll I'll take I'll take that out yes okay yes Dr Gill I crossed Dr Wright's name no problem thank you um so um as
you're aware that this is a Juneteenth month this month um our federal government and state government honor this as a holiday with our state government uh in September of 2022 maybe uh 1655 bus pass to recognize this as a holiday um so we are requesting that our board approves this is a holiday for All District employees anybody who works during this time in June um and so let's see let's see uh request any questions okay um can I get a motion please thank you may get a second okay thank you roll call please yes so that brings us to the end of our meeting this evening I want to thank everybody for being here if you're at home watching us um teacher staff everybody that works for our district I want to thank you for
