time i'd like to see if we have a first of our board members doesn't even want to make a have a first okay and do i have a second thank you and roll call please miss martinez yes yes trustee ferrucci yes trustee masali yes and trustee grubs all right thank you move on to our next item um this meeting is being recorded for live streaming and archiving on the district youtube channel and we are going to move into the pledge of allegiance and um dr young just had a birthday so i'm going to have him stand up and do the pledge [Music] thank you be seated um okay um item number seven's approval of the agenda you i have a motion on the floor to approve the agenda as written i move that we approve
the agenda is written okay um we do a a roll call please this is martinez president sada yes please christy moss christie ferrucci yes trustee macelli yes trustee grimms thank you thank you and we're going to move on to our highlight this evening we have melanie buck the principal at joe henderson here and i'm going to have dr young tee this one up yeah so uh come on to the podium or and you can introduce yourselves everybody the staff from joe henderson so this is an opportunity that um or highlight where we try to feature something at each of our schools during the course of the year is kind of a nice part of our board meeting we love to hear about the wonderful things that are taking place so welcome you're going to talk
about a program there called just say hello so please introduce yourselves and your hello everybody i am melanie buck the proud principal of joe henderson elementary and i wanted to thank you for inviting us up here to um share a little bit about what we've been doing up at our site first and foremost what we did this year is we really focused on covid protocols and just keeping kids safe and keeping our school open and that was most important um and that included like revamping our outdoor eating area and hiring more noon duties and so we've really been successful with low rates so that's been wonderful to see kids happy up on our site and then the second thing that we did was we wanted to focus on social emotional um needs of the kiddos
so we've had a lot of kids coming in with uh you know learning how to regulate their emotions and sit in a seat and be a student and it's been really interesting to see all the nuances they're coming in with um and we've been really responsive to that too in meeting their needs one thing that we um incorporated and this is our fourth year of doing this is called start with hello week and um i would like to introduce kelly hughes our fifth grade teacher who's going to talk a little bit about how it got started thank you good evening thank you so much for the opportunity to come and share with you tonight about our start with hello program as mrs buck said um so it is our fourth year of start with hello
is this my clicker and i thought i'd give you a brief overview of how start with hello kind of came about nationally and then bring it back to joe henderson and what our week was like last week so um the sandy hook promise is an organization that was established by family members of the loved ones that were tragically lost in the school shooting at sandy hook in 2012 and their purpose as you can see from the presentation is to educate and empower parents and students and communities and schools to on how to prevent gun violence um any kind of violence really but gun violence before it happens so they really focus on that prevention piece as we know especially during these trying times that we have been living through all across the country we have
students that may be feeling feelings of alone or isolation sometimes they're quiet and we don't always know they're not always the ones that are the loudest and we know that that is happening and especially now and we also know that students that feel that way often can be victims of things such as bullying violence and uh sometimes depression and so start with hello was an initiative that came out of the sandy hook promise and their the goal of the program was to help students and staff and community members learn how to create more inclusive spaces within their schools and their community their classrooms and their school community and it really is as we tell the kids it really is just three simple steps so step one is see someone alone if you're looking around you're
out on the playground you see somebody alone step two reach out and help and step three just say hello start with hello so we're actually going to try it so what i'd like you all to do and see somebody [Music] [Laughter] so really it is really that simple although as we say to the kids as well it seems simple but it's oftentimes not the most simple thing especially for our young students um and so we want to give them the tools in order uh the tools that they need in order to do that more stop successfully you all kept talk kept talking it's amazing what happens when you just pause and be nice and say hello um so those are the three simple steps that we talked with the kids about we have a big
banner that we put out on the playground to remind them of that as well and so um then what comes is a whole week of start with hello and like mel had said that we have been doing this for four years we even did it virtually last year which was a new experience but this year we were really excited to bring it back in person and i was just telling melanie that i think this was our best year yet i really feel like it was probably a combination of a lot of things the kids being back on campus number one um and then just their their need for that social interaction that they've been missing out on for so long and so this was our week um we had themed days every day and then
at recess time at their lunch recess time there were activities available to them in each of our four playground zones that we have and so we'll see pictures of that in just a moment but in addition to the activities at the on the playground we also encourage staff to incorporate it into their classroom into their social emotional learning time into their community circles and then we also got our parent community involved which was really awesome and i think that's really what set this year apart from all the others so we had students and their family members sign up to be morning greeters so every morning last week you would when you're getting to school there was kids and parents there was signs welcoming you to school excited to see you saying good morning so there's
pictures of that and then we really um we unearthed some hidden talents of our parent community as you can see uh we had parents who volunteered to come on monday evening and they chalked our playground with amazing artwork of words of inspiration words of hello and one thing about the artwork a cool story we have a staff member um who has a disability and she's brand new to our site and she said that these chalk drawings made her cry because she walked on and she could tell that the kids felt welcome and connected to the school and she didn't feel that growing up and so creating a platform for the kiddos it was amazing and then when the parents were dropping off the kids it was hilarious they were like hello hello everyone it was
a great vibe yeah so it was really cool these again that you can see these are just a few of the drawings but the chalk the playground and the front of our school was covered in this beautiful artwork and it's still there today actually we can still see it some is fading away but it's awesome to see and then these are some of the activity stations that we had so on the top there that's our reach out and help wall that was one of the activities centers where kids were encouraged to think about simple ways that they could reach out and help others they wrote it down on a sticky they stuck it up on the the green sign and then as you can see throughout the week it grew so it was really awesome
by the end of the week we had a big mural of sticky notes and ways that we could help each other and uh it was great on the dance party so i'm kind of i'm out there at recess time in this huge is in her classroom um but we had a grandma show up every single day and get her boogie on so that's great thank you to howl uh hal barrett's um grandma who showed up and then the compliment cards i mean one kid said mrs buck can you please deliver this to miss malty's room because i have a friend over there so they can't play together at recess but they were able to you know share things like that so it was really sweet yeah and then uh the other we had another station
called find a friend bingo and so the kids were given a little bingo board and just encouraged to talk to their classmates maybe that they didn't know well enough and try and find some commonalities um with one another um the picture at the top there we had friday was green day i unfortunately didn't get a photo this year but that's from a previous year um green is the signature color of sandy hook promise so we encouraged all staff and students to wear green and then there's our awesome staff in the bottom corner there wearing our start with hello t-shirts and another thing that is coordinated was there were conversation tents on the picnic tables and so the kids were asking each other if you were a superhero who would you be or if you came
back as a ghost who would you homes and so they were having these great conversations just talking and connecting it was it was such an amazing week and we've seen it continue on yeah definitely so that's a little bit about start with hello week i know some of you were able to come and and check it out for yourselves and we really loved seeing you and we look forward to continuing start with hello every year and we also our hope is that it spreads through the community so it was great to send it to parents but in these trying times i mean you guys have seen the emails that come our way and as public servants or the things that are posted on facebook and it's just disheartening so we hope that the adults can
also model some great connectedness and just pick up the phone and say mrs buck hello i have a problem with this yes just call me and and uh say it but just say hello and spread kindness across our community so thank you for having us thank you so much so i need to just share so hello ladies so i need to just share i was friday was my day to pick up my granddaughter so you need to find a way too bad you can't figure out how to keep those those amazing chalk art sayings on the playground we ended up going through and i was reading them with her of course with lightly and she's giggling and she's only a little over two and she was getting such a kick out of them and i
thought what what a wonderful playground to look at to see that happening it is awesome i'll figure out how to get spray glue and keep them on there i think we might have to get the parents here that's awesome that you guys do this every year and it's become a regular thing and it was different last year and probably so exciting to see everybody on campus and enjoying that i certainly appreciate it i think i can speak for the board how much we appreciate you grounding and getting everybody together and just basically you know like a smile is universal it's just we're saying hello it's universal it's so important so thank you guys so much you can see the smiles through the masks yes it's all in the eyes it's in the eyes thank you
so much all right we are going to move on to our reports and we have a couple of students here with us um i'm gonna invite alice wells to speak first she's from liberty high school good evening president zeta yeah hello okay there we go good evening president zeta superintendent dr young and fred and fellow trustees and cabinet members my name is alice wells and i'm from liberty high school liberty has completed our first month of advisory competitions we had a door decorating contest and field day full of activities while all advisories came in first in different categories ms otter's class won the overall that was my class and we would like to thank student services and mrs rice for bringing titsy pups we would be planning another round of school activities and missota's class

each month liberty strives to create volunteer opportunities that would benefit our community last month students volunteered for the coastal clean up event keeping with october theme we are working with venetia parks and recreation to set up a time to volunteer to clean up parts of the venetia cemetery we have helped out there before and we would like to bring back this tradition thank you and have a good night thank you so much sounds like a lot's been going on over at liberty it sounds like some good stuff thank you for letting us know and um at this time i'll invite ali ballinger from benicia high school hello everyone i'm ali ballinger the asb president at benicia high school i would just like to talk about our upcoming events next week is homecoming week which we're
all very excited for our theme is hoco and cali so our days monday we're doing in and out because there's in and out everywhere in california so we're going to do a little mix and match day on tuesday we're doing from the bay to la which would be california sports gear so like sports teams on wednesday it is disney day so obviously disney and wednesday night we're having a student movie night it'll be located in the o wing and we have clubs providing cotton candy popcorn little different snacks like that on thursday it's national parks day so students are going to wear earth tones or national park merch on friday it's a blue and gold rush and we're going to have a rally during the school day as well as a football game and a
half time event which will be a competition between all the grades because throughout the week they're competing for a spirit stick and whichever grade has the most points will then win and then on the 16th we have our homecoming dance which is california sunset it will be located in our quad from 8 to 11 and the last day to purchase tickets is tomorrow for 15 if you have an asb or associated student body card and 20 without and they all need to be purchased on our school web store thank you so much for that information um homecomings oh i mean we all remember our homecomings they're so great so i hope you have a lot of fun next week and um thanks for sharing all this information and ladies i know you guys probably have
homework and stuff so we definitely um understand if you have to depart our meeting at this point so thank you and i look forward to seeing you next time all right so um we are now going to move on to our superintendent report dr young you're up very good thank you good evening everybody uh just a couple of quick items from me so it's our ninth week of school you know i keep i said last time i keep thinking in terms of milestones every week we are at this is another milestone of accomplishment that we're back we're keeping schools open and uh we're very proud of the things that are taking place in this district on behalf of the kids um i was talking to our two student representatives and they felt like man it's
going by fast like oh here we are week nine so it is it does start to go by quickly a couple of other things um mr gomez at the last meeting we were talking about social emotional well-being talked about the wellness centers opening up at the schools and i was able to visit them and i happened to be at the one at the high school today it is really magnificent it's absolutely beautiful and i just think that's a wonderful thing we're doing as a school district i i genuinely do to have a moment where students as needed can pause and go over and be in a space that feels safe and they can you know regulate and they can have somebody there a trusted adult to be with them so i just think that helps
the overall social and emotional well-being and the climate of our school so we have these wellness centers at all of our schools another quick thing i just wanted to recognize uh my colleague trustee to the left dr moss who is a longtime educator and also quite a writer she's been published in the venetian magazine at least twice maybe more eight and she's she's really a terrific writer in the uh article you know i always look when it comes out i was like here's dr maz is in there so uh i think you're coming out soon so i just want to pay you an appreciation that i think is a professional educator doing those things continues to sharpen the saw as they say so well done welcome uh i'd like to recognize one of our teachers
ms kim thompson who teaches ap english at the high school she's just a terrific teacher one of the you know kind of cornerstone teachers of our ap program which is very successful and she got a letter of recognition from the college board because when kids take these tests they need to be graded and they need someone to grade them and so they need smart ap teachers like ms thompson to volunteer so she got this letter of acknowledgement and her participation in it and i i think she graded like a thousand essays or something so and they just commended her for that effort so we continue to have a very strong ap program in our and our district and she's a big part of it so congratulations thompson and um that's it from your superintendent for
tonight thanks dr young and we're going to move on to our board report so are any of my colleagues do you have anything to share there you go thanks right so i just wanted to share that i am i belong well i'm actually the vice president of the solano county school boards association and so the solano county school boards association consists of members throughout the county who are on the school board um so we actually held our our second this is our round two or second year of our equity workshops and so with the equity workshops it's extended to all of our elected officials in solano county so last year we had quite a few of our supervisors attend school board members city council members superintendents and so we had our first series or our
first one on monday and then we have two more that's scheduled so one of the really cool activities that we did was around asking or being able to explain the history of your names so we went into breakout rooms we just talked about our first name and kind of gave some historical context to each other and um had some really great discussions just on that piece alone so so look forward to the next two that's it terrific thank you um yes okay miss grubs i just wanted to say i had the pleasure of visiting venetian middle school in benicia high school this week and i i have to say i'm so impressed with the middle school right now is so light it's light it's airy um there's seating everywhere it's so different from when my
children went to to venetia middle school it's quite beautiful the kids are happy the paint has lightened up the whole areas it's gorgeous and the high school as well was was very impressive i was so impressed with the classes that i went into i learned that some of the um some of the kids are are actually learn how to in the health class how to scope um how to scope a throat how to cast a limb not that they are they do it but they learn how they're proficient at cpr so it was really a fun day i also got to see kids former students of mine and that was really really fun but um it was an impressive very impressive visit i hadn't been there for a while and it was impressive thank you
thank you um i just wanted to update my colleagues on i did one of my csva rep meetings and they they talked about um you know the the our curriculum and the the news format which leslie has been so proficient at that she's been getting us up to speed and done already so um and also they talked about the tk and the classes that the people are that teachers are going to be needing to have and right now what they're talking about because i was really kind of disheartened is there they're projecting that the funding will go to the concentration grants which of course our district doesn't get because you have to have um over 54 of your population so um there they haven't passed it yet it hasn't been approved because a few of
us did a little whining so hopefully they heard us and then that they also talked about the fact that california is actually down quite a bit in student enrollment in the public schools so it's not just us it seems to be going california wide that are feeling the decline and they're they're looking at that and trying to figure out why the other thing i also did is i did nail cap and i did the district curriculum and mrs zeta was with me on this year so that was kind of fun to have another set of ears on there and um they're already off and running and working really hard and i'm really not going to say much because i'll be in the presentation and we always have a habit of making a summary and blowing
their thunder so but they're already off and running and doing a great job thank you mrs furrity and mark do you have anything that you'd like to share no and the only thing i was going to say is um like what dr young was saying about the wellness centers i was able to go to the soft opening of the wellness center at robert semple yesterday and it was incredible incredible thinking what a what a great space for students to have to be able to go and listen to some just very soft music or the trickling of a of a fountain or you know just a place to decompress and um i think it's going to be a great program they're going to be bringing students through their next week from their um site and hopefully
get that going the week after so it's exciting to see all these come to fruition and i'm excited about that that's all um i have to add for tonight's board reports so at this time we're going to move on to item number 10 which are comments from members of the public busd has moved into in-person board meetings we asked that members of the public who wish to attend including those who wish to address the board wear a mask at all times covet executive order n-29-20 expired on september 30th all functions of the board meeting including public comments will be done in person members of the public may address the board at regular board meeting at any time within the board's jurisdiction speaker cards are available at the back table please note the item you wish
to speak to and submit a card to the board secretary the board president will call all the open session session public comments not on the agenda government code section 54954 dot 3 during public comment item comments for items on the agenda will be called during the specific item comments are limited to no more than three minutes per speaker or the board may limit a total time to 20 minutes per item by law no action may be taken on any item raised during public comment periods and matters may be referred to staff replacement on a future agenda of the governing board please be reminded to keep your comments respectful as students may be watching the meeting thank you and i do have some public comment cards they look like this if you've ever not seen them
that's what they look like they're always going to be on the back table and um the first one is speaking on item 10 is a stephen getz if you join the us that'd be great thank you thank you madam chair my name is steven goetz i'm with the venetia tree foundation and i have a handout to give you it's a status report on our activities uh on your campuses it's been a while since we've uh made a report like this so we thought it's time to take this opportunity to do so um we're all volunteer nonprofit we were established in 2009 and one of our first projects was in 2011 planting 80 trees on the high school south of ball fields along military west since that time we've had planting projects at every campus in
the district and we've planted over 470 trees we hope this partnership continues in the future because we think planting trees at schools is very important one of the reasons that's important is that we think trees improve school campuses our second project was at semple in 2012 where we planted 80 trees around the play field to shield it from the traffic pollution from the adjacent freeway and east 2nd street in the following year we did a similar project between the freeway and the middle school and in 2015 we planted trees between the freeway and the high school we also think that trees will cool campuses from the hot sun one of the projects that was delayed by the pandemic was planting more trees in the quad to help provide more shade for the students during lunch
time we also think students learn about trees when they plant trees in our projects we work very hard with the teachers and the parents to make sure our tree plantings are convenient for the students students learn about the benefits of trees about how to plant a tree and how to maintain a tree the picture on the front page of the handout are former hounds currently benicia high school students standing by trees with their parents that they planted in 2012 when they were kindergartners at henderson you can check out our website or facebook page for more pictures on that event it was really neat we also think our projects are successful because we work closely with the administration and with the staff on our projects all the locations of our trees are approved by the schools
we use tree species that are low maintenance and that can grow on rainfall alone after they're established and we work through the high school to recruit volunteers to help maintain the trees that we plant on campus our accomplishments for the fiscal for those last school year during 2 2020 2021 was pretty tough as as you might imagine your school campuses were closed to the public so we adopted some covid 19 practices and organized some tree planting events off campus we recruited over 300 volunteers about 25 percent of them were under the age of 18. most of those were bonisha high schools or benicio students or students from campus in march of last year you opened your campus to contractors who followed your health screening procedures so we followed those procedures and organized a tree pruning
clinic at simple elementary we taught a bunch of boy scouts how to prune trees there and we uh organized a tree planting bent in april at the high school to mulch and weed the trees around the high school our the photo on the second page is uh four students from the benicia high key club who helped plant 15 trees along rose drive last october as part of a community service project our goals for the coming year are to work with the school district to try and jumpstart any of the projects that were delayed uh by the pandemic there were five of them mr guts i i am so sorry but i think we reached our three minute okay um and i don't i don't want to miss anything that's really important um was there anything
else that because i think this is a great program and we appreciate all that you do and was there something else that you really wanted to point out before our contact information is at the bottom right so if you have any other questions feel free to um contact us i also like to introduce another member of our board allison fleck i don't know if there's anyone else i don't see anyone else from our board but we really appreciate the partnership we've had with the school district these many years thank you very very much we really appreciate it oops all right and i have one more it's a general mr miller would you like to come up to the podium hello hello hello my name is andrew miller and i'm a parent of two children in
the benissa unified school district in every meeting i come here and i ask you guys to concentrate on math science english and history and i also ask you guys that i would like you to injure relationship with epic education but i never really explained why that i feel this way um so i brought i was going to write up something to read and then i was going through this material and i thought you know what i'm just going to read to you from epoch education some of their materials that they use to teach for their rir protocol and so forth so i'll just read to you this is their how to talk about race packet in order to adequately discuss race we need to understand that social economic and political construction as well as lived
experience critical race theory is a framework that helps us understand racism as endemic to american life presume that racism has contributed to all contemporary manifestations of group advantage and disadvantage i sent around a thing too you can kind of see under the heading critical race theory that understanding the tenets of crt provides a critical lens through which to understand our personal experience and the way larger systems and structures operate in relation to race and they go on to list lots of different things such as racism is a permanent component of life in the u.s and the origins of property rights in the united states are rooted in racial domination communities of color will experience gains when the interests converge with the self-interest of whites individually and systemically in other words racial justice for communities of
color is supported when there is also a benefit for white people on the surface many liberal approaches such as color blindness and incremental change appear to be desirable goals to pursue however these concepts are insufficient to address and often perpetuate systemic racism as you explore each tenant use the crt graphic organizer so you can apply your learning and explore how the tenants are alive in your personal and professional life then they want you to go through and list things about the permanence of racism and whiteness as property and i find these things to be very divisive and this is from a company that you guys are using to help with the diversity equity inclusion part which i understand that you're trying to help i was given some numbers of which were i found appalling for
the for the uh certain groups they truly were terrible and obviously something needs to be done to help those kids um 18 was it something like that but anyway i just find this company to be more divisive and i think that you could probably find somebody better to help you with this work than somebody who is nationally known for their critical race theory and their belief in systemic racism and so forth and i would just like to again ask you to terminate your relationship with this company thank you thank you mr miller we're i'm going to move on to item number 11 the consent calendar all matters listed under excuse me under the consent calendar are considered by the board to be routine and will be approved by the board in one motion there will
be no no discussion on these items unless members of the board staff or public request specific items to be pulled and discussed do i have a motion to accept the consent calendar as written i'll move to accept the consent calendar i have a second i'll second that okay thank you uh roll call please presidency yes yes yes rusty macelli yes trustee grubs and then on this resolution 11.3 do i need to pull us out of okay so on 11.3 consideration and approval of resolution number 21-22-09 obsolete materials separate rule oops you don't need to know that i need to know that okay so um do i have a motion to it oh okay so oh because we did it yeah okay so roll call please yes thank you we're going to move on to item
number 12 communication and informational items first up 12.1 is california school local accountability dashboard indicators holy smokes um dr beatson would you like to i talk about this i'd be happy to thank you uh thanks for having me um tonight i want to present just a moment on the california dashboard local indicators this is something i need to bring each year to the school board and what i really want us to get out of this presentation is just what are the requirements for the california dashboard that's our accountability dashboard on the on the website what are the local indicators and what are our self-assessment results so if if you remember in previous presentations i've talked about eight state priorities some of them are um were held accountable through state criteria such as the s back
the chronic absenteeism graduation rates all of those fall in certain of the eight priorities and then there are some that we assess locally and so tonight i'm presenting on the ones that we assess locally and that we put that information into the dashboard so the state board of education approved the standards for local indicators it requires us to annually measure our progress on them on the certain indicators that we do local measure on and then i need to report them as part of a non-consent action item or a non-consent item at a regular board meeting and what happens is once i put all of the information into the website it gets evaluated and then determined whether or not we are we have met that standard or not met and if we don't meet the standard
for more than a couple of years then we can end up in uh program improvement or differentiated assistance so what i have for you on this slide are the five areas that have a component that is a local assessment for the local indicator so the first one is basic services that is our williams act our teacher uh miss assignments standards uh along students without instructional materials what vacancies do we have and if our facilities are in good repair and that is a um report that our director of maintenance has to do every year and so you can see the numbers we have zero assign miss assignments we have instructional materials i actually presented that at the last board meeting we do have three vacancies currently and um our facilitators our facilities my goodness this is
the first of three presentations i hope my tongue straightens out i'm warming up so we have met that indicator another one is on common core standards and it really has to do with professional learning opportunities for common core state standards implementation of common core state standards and opportunities to improve instructional practice and so that is a rating scale there's lots of different questions that you answer and we have come out as me on that as well the third is around parent involvement and really our efforts to seek input and decision-making um promoting uh parental participation building relationships and partnerships with families and that one has a rating scale and a narrative where we get to describe the different things that we're doing to solicit parent involvement and we've met that one as well school climate
some of these have both state indicators like suspension rates on climate and then local indicators and so this is one on um we have to use surveys and so we do that we use besides locally uh created surveys we have the california healthy kids survey that we give every other year to certain grade levels and then the reach survey and we are in the process of giving that right now and that is important in helping us determine our climate and um school culture and then the last one is around course access and looking at and removing barriers for students to take courses and so we look at schedules we ask students what courses they want to take then our high school principals build schedules around how many kids want to take different courses we've removed
any gatekeeping around the ap courses another big component of course access is the incredible work our high school has done to increase our cte programs and how that has really helped with college and career readiness indicators and then the other piece that we look at is that students in their freshman year during freshman focus create a 10-year plan and then they revisit that each year of high school and so all of those are indicators around course access and helping kids make choices as they go through high school and so that indicator has been met as well and that's the end of this presentation do you have any questions thank you okay buddy thank you dr beatson um moving on to 12.2 equity and opportunity update and oh let's see i'm going to invite dr beats
and pack to discuss this with us and share some information thank you absolutely i wanted to just um bring back i keep this as an ongoing item and about a month ago i came and shared with you the work that we were planning for the year and i wanted to just give you as uh and dr gill uh and i did that presentation together and i wanted to give you an update on where we are since we last spoke and so i want to let you know the recent work that we've done and then what we have upcoming i always start everything as you know with grounding the work in our district's vision organizational beliefs and the desired characteristics of a benicia graduate and if you look at the wording in here and i was
just working with another team earlier today our equity team as a matter of fact we were reading some of this and it really does speak to equity and it's it's embedded in the uh the document that really drives all the work that we do here in the district and again coming off of that are a reminder of our four uh lcap goals around social emotional learning literacy humanities math and stem our two academic goals and then equity and opportunity and even though we have that equity and opportunity as a as a call out goal it's also embedded in the other three goals as well and so i wanted to share with you uh and i shared this with you last time we have a lot of professional development and opportunities happening for our administrators where
we're working uh with epic every month we have district-wide events events for staff and then events for star parents students and community and i want to talk with you a little bit about each of those and so for our administrators what we've done since the last time we met is on september 1st we had our first two-hour workshop as an admin team actually it was our second because we had our very first one before school started in august for a full day and then every month um dr erica brown from epic meets with us virtually and we did compassionate dialogue that was our first meeting and then the meeting that we have coming up that we're working on there's a lot of pre-work that we do for this is thriving as a racially conscious person
and so those that's our next session with her district-wide we at 6 30 i just ended our very first equity team district-wide equity team meeting it's very exciting we had put out an interest application then we did elections for sites that had more folks than we had slots for and then we had our first launch meeting today and so that was a three hour meeting from 3 30 to 6 30 and we'll meet every month and then there's also pre-work in between that and we had 25 people on the meeting which was excellent and dr uh erica brown who is our consultant from epic helped facilitate it we did some of that work together and this year is really an in-depth training year because before we can go out and do lots and lots of
action and solve some issues we have to really be grounded in what the work is and how do we and a lot of it is really just understanding who you are and what you bring to the table and what lens you might be looking through and being able to recognize that there's multiple viewpoints and then being able to engage in a conversation around that and so that's going to be the focus of the bulk of the work that we're doing this year additionally i sent out a couple of i think it was a couple of weeks ago a catalog maybe it was just last week of a bunch of many um professional learning opportunities for all staff administrative staff certificated and classified staff they will get paid up to eight hours on a time sheet
and you can see on this slide all of the different types of courses that are available some of them are synchronous some of them are asynchronous and some of them are blended all of them are virtual really exciting last night we had our launch of the willie b atkins program so a week ago we had our orientation that was done via zoom and they have 50 students signed up i'm not sure how many showed up last night they said that typically the first meeting is a little bit lower but then people start coming so i got to dr young and i got to pop in last night quickly during the study session part and so if you remember this is a an organization that's run for 35 years in vallejo and we have now started
our own i don't know if we call it chapter or program here in benicia so it's free for our benicia students in grades eight and above the first hour is study skills the next two hours there's different topics that they go through each week and it's an every week commitment study skills sat prep mentoring homework help filling out your fafsa all of those types of things with the goal of increasing the number of african-american students who enroll in college later this year they will be taking field trips to historically black universities and so lots of great great things so we're very excited about that uh we have a speaker series this year and so so far we have landed three presenters we've had the first one already uh on social emotional learning with chas schwarzel
from our county office of education um it was greatly attended we had 40 participants on the call which is more than when we do things in person often so that's been an interesting learning for us um we have dr nancy dome who's the co-founder of epic she will be doing a speaker series in january for us and then we'll have one focused on early planning for college in april and that will be aimed primarily at our middle school through early high school age students but it will be open to anyone and we've had darlene uh belle carson years ago and she was excellent um and then uh next week and we just sent out the registration for this as well we have a a community parent forum with epic and our administrative staff will be
facilitating that that is at 6 00 p.m you should have i think do you all get the um the links through parent square or no i don't you don't okay i i will send you um the in okay so if you want to attend you do need to register all that is is that sends you the link uh to the event and it's from six to seven thirty um dr young and i will um open the meeting with just some history of the work that we've been doing in the why and then dr brown will teach everyone what the rir protocol is and how it's used and and some more work around that and then we're going to go into some breakout rooms to do some listening sessions and our administrators will be there to
help facilitate those as well i think that's the update on what we have done so far thank you so much dr beatson um and i do think we got all of that information in an email just recently so that we can sign up for that next up is our non are our non-consent action items and the first one is 13.1 consideration and ratification of the revised certificate management salary schedule for the 2122 school year due to the change of position from coordinator of health services to the assistant director of health services do i have a motion on did i do it wrong oh oh unapologized dr gill i am just let's thank you dr gill board meeting and since that job description was approved uh the salary schedule did not have the assistant director title
on it we just need to bring it forward to you for your approval so you actually did it perfectly that was perfect thank you thank you so much i wouldn't leave you out of the conversation um okay so at this point do i have a motion on the table move to approve the revised certificated management salary schedule for 2122 school year as presented i'll second that roll call vote please mrs martinez president satan yes justine moss yes dusty ferrucci yes christine miceli yes and trustee grace thank you um we're going to move on to 13.2 don't go far miss dr gill just stay right there um consideration and approval of the resolution number 21-22-10 for benicio unified school district condition of employment and volunteer eligibility coven 19 vaccination dr gill would you fill us in
on that please good evening everyone president president zeta trustees dr young and cabinet and community members so we actually um covered 19 vaccine vaccination we as a school district made a huge effort thanks to dr young and the county office for helping us out with that way back in march many of our employees have been vaccinated already some of our students have been also vaccinated but as the governor has put a directive order on august 11th and cd ph came up with a director as well that school employees need to vaccinate get vaccinated uh or get tested on a weekly basis so we are bringing forward a resolution but we are requesting actually the the resolution that was uploaded originally on the board agenda last friday we are requesting it to be amended with the
new resolution which we will upload again also afterwards uh with two changes the changes are that in the original resolution we did say that all employees who are not vaccinated must show us proof for exemption either because of medical reasons or because of religious reasons we went back and read that as of this moment cdph is not requiring that specific exemption cdph is simply saying you either get vaccinated or you get a weekly testing there's a good possibility in future months something like that might come up because we have already heard that next next year there's a good possibility testing may not even be option but we will bring it forward at that time as an amendment or as a new resolution to you so right now we are asking requesting you to prove the
amended resolution and that simply states that all employees must be vaccinated by november one if they're not vaccinated they must get tested on a weekly basis uh starting november one on a weekly basis if the employees don't get tested they will receive disciplinary consequences starting with unpaid leave and so on and we are taking out as of right now the requirement for exemption so we will not be asking employees to submit a medical reason or religious reasons if anybody submits it we'll accept them but we are not requiring that [Music] thank you for that update um so at this time do i have a motion on the table for consideration and approval of resolution 21-22-10 i'll move to approve resolution number 21-22-10 along including the amended articles as presented by dr phil the stupid person
you don't have a second i'll second that okay a roll call vote please this is martinez thank you thank you thank you thank you [Laughter] it's getting comical i'm sorry give me a second oh my god um last item thank goodness 13.3 consideration and approval of the federal elementary and secondary school emergency relief grant esther iii um dr beatson you're up again up again round three thank you um so we have uh there's oh yes i'm sorry there should be a presentation linked in there we haven't we have an accessory okay sorry andrew um so uh another uh pot of grant funding is coming our way and we with that comes a plan that we write and this one's called sr3 we've already done sr1 and 2. um sr3 does require a plan the other
ones did not necessarily require a plan so what i want to go through with you tonight is um what is what is the sr3 funding what are the requirements and then what's the content of the plan and then i would be asking for your approval of that plan so i could submit it um the next slide again is our driving force in this district which is our um organizational beliefs and our vision and thank you now i can now i can see if i can do my slide here and that because i can't read that from you all good man you've seen this slide before um sr2 and sr3 uh and the in-person learning grant and the expanded learning and opportunity grant i just flipped it around before the in-person learning grant which is on
the bottom and the expanded learning grant those are all part of our lcap we approved those last year so what i'm bringing to you tonight is information about sr3 where you can see that green arrow it is about 1.1 million dollars and 20 of the funding for this grant needs to be for learning loss mitigation measures um the next several slides really talk about the allowable uses and what i'd like to do for you tonight is just sort of highlight them and if you have further questions i'm happy to answer them pretty much sr3 can be used for everything that sr1 and sr2 could be used for so ppe learning loss mitigation before and after school and summer programming services for mental health and wellness services for academic support so all of those very same
things yes sir number three it talks about particularly students who are disproportionately impacted by the cobin 19 pandemic how was that decided who was disproportionately i don't know i was just curious if they didn't really spill it out it didn't really spell it out but i think we can look at our data and and nationally look at students and and oftentimes that falls along some of the same lines that we've talked about for our equity work and and our student groups right absolutely um supplies technology so all of those same things can be linked in this so i'm gonna skip through the next couple of slides because i just really outlined what was in that um allowable usage part in the components of this plan we had to do stakeholder engagement unless [Music] uh and
and what was written in the directions were unless we had done and talked about sr3 when we were building our lap lcap in our um elo plan which we did because we talked about all of these and we had made a decision back then to hold off on this funding so that we could use it to extend some of the actions and services that we had started with the current one-time money so stakeholder engagement actions and expenditures um and then making sure that interventions are addressing student needs and then we also had the opportunity in this grant to align it if we wanted to to the yellow which you approved last year which is also part of we we pulled it all into the lcap and so we did align those plans as well you've
seen this before so this is the alignment part where it's aligned to the goals in our lcap and then this is a reminder of whoops this slide sorry i just messed up here this slide is a reminder of the actions and services that fall inside of each of the lcap goals because we're making a through line between the elo the early no i can't remember what that one was expanded learning and opportunity grant that fed into the lcap and now is going to be extended by my uh recommendation is that we extend that into the sr3 okay and so i met with the el capitans some of whom are here in our audience and we looked through what the requirements of the plan were what actions and services we had and the recommendation that we
came up with together was to keep this grant which it allows us to do in sort of bigger buckets instead of being very specific here in it was the end of september when we were doing this to say we really want to spend this money which doesn't need to be spent until another two years on these specific actions but keep it in buckets that are very directly related to the lcap and the elo and so as you can see on this slide that's exactly what we did address these are the three areas that we needed to spend money in addressing learning lost instructional time we had to use 20 of our funds in there so we did that around mental health and well-being we'll continue to look at the actions and services that we're doing
now and evaluate which ones do we want to use this new funding to continue to support um and then the other uh pieces were where it was the best fit was this section called remaining funds and so we said accelerating student progress and so staffing and materials to support accelerating progress of students in the classroom and through intervention opportunities materials uh high impact tutoring technology assessment so it's kind of a big bucket so we've got mental health and well-being accelerating student progress and then professional learning and so that we can continue the work that we've started in that area as well and so my recommendation is um to oh and i'm sorry there's one more section it's how do we measure the effectiveness and so in each of those buckets these are the types of
how we would measure the progress using those tools and then what would be the frequency okay and again it's all directly aligned to our other plans and so my recommendation is to approve the sr3 as presented um unless you have any other questions and the actual plan is is linked it should be linked in your agenda yep thank you does anybody have any questions for dr beatson we're all good okay um then i'd like to see if we have a motion on the table for consideration and approval of federal elementary and secondary school emergency relief fund grant esther three so i have the first move that we approve the uh esther iii expenditure plan is presented thank you do we have a second thank you and we're going to do a roll call vote president
yes christie moss trustee perucci trustee miceli yes and trustee grass thank you i i want to thank everybody for being here this evening reminder that our next meeting is going to be coming up on october 21st um and dr moss will be running the meeting because i will be out of town and um so i think that is it it's been a pleasure as always meeting adjourned you
