warm weather and uh this is a special celebration my name is Nora I'm in eighth grade I'm Jose and I'm in eighth grade as well ready to start ready all right so so opening remarks we have Middle School supervisor Kristen mom please come upot [Music] it's it's good to see you all here all these beautiful people I'm going to look down periodically I want to introduce you my name myself I'm Kristen Mom I'm Middle School girls and boys SE it's a special honor to celebrate today I want to thank our Student Life staff and counselors making sure everything worked well Becky enrod for the decorations and the program design looks wonderful I want to thank Luke M Michael manuel and everybody and all the people who came today for the decorations and everybody who came

wow and finally we're celebrating today the special day [Music] in the past if you remember if you look back this was called anybody know the nickname yuck no we want to keep the tradition this is the Middle School activity center this is the eagle eag Junior Eagle this is still the eagle this is where we meet this is where we meet we want to invest in our students make sure they learn to thrive how to be motivated in their leadership their abilities invest in their learning through growing in their future to spiral into their future to be ready have their leadership abilities provide opportunities for our students and what they need host parties take on events related to organizations have middle school activities games we'll have different games periodically leadership skills and teach them to

continue and that will continue in high school and real world program and they can learn these in middle school and continue to grow and nurture and become strong and continue their strong leadership skills Middle School activity center looking at this finally seeing something different have you noticed anything different it's orange and black since I've been working for 28 years this is my first time seeing orange and bl the same same same it's very bold it's like oh I feel strong it influences us do you guys feel the same way yes oh maybe that can spread out through the call the school orange and black do you guys agree orange and black that's right no more Brown let's keep this going in honor of this let's keep it going staying strong moving forward I feel honored

thank you and she's wearing orange and wow thank you Kristen next we'd like to welcome Ethan Bernstein he's here he was the former sorry dean of students he's going to explain how the last one how it went down and then how we finally got to the new Ethan please come up hello thank you both for introducing me I cannot wait to get through this ribbon here I wondered why it get putting off Len where you at I want to come around I had to come around I want to walk through it you're adding more problems you're part of that state system more barriers pretty soon though that barrier is going to be long gone Len had actually asked me to say a few things about how this came to be and how we're able to

open it pretty soon here Ken Norton helped me hi Ken our local historian the old building that we had that was brought over here was a media right over in Berkeley that's where the movies were stored so technically it was storage he said yeah I was correct thank you now this is an old the old building that was here do you all remember that building it did not look good didn't work out very well with the beautiful campus we have here but a wonderful home home to formerly junior high school then Middle School maybe on the outside not so much but on the inside it was nice had the some things fixed up had some chairs 1950s Style people really tried to make this a wonderful home uh for the juniors Junior High School later

on turned into Middle School on the outside it wasn't pretty to look at but on the inside was great I mean the music was loud I think best better than any other place where music is played so powerful that often times electricity would go out and where is that electric electricity coming from Cottage 10 10 uh so I'd be working all day then I would arrive home and then they'd say oh electric electricity is out can you open Cottage 10 so we can turn it back on can I say no no the students are incredibly important so I got my car and drove back and turned it on and uh the counselors at the time I said don't turn it up too loud I mean everyone else could hear it all around us just turn

it down some so you can play the party some more but maintenance they tried to keep it alive they tried to give it CPR to resuscitate it but it was really time to go and then in 2012 that was that time of Vernick was superintendent there was Sacramento people who were responsible for facilities and they came down and they said it is time for that building to be taken away and I thought great oh first I thought well what is Middle School going to do they're going to build a new one anyway in the next year or so right that was in 2012 it's going to take a year or so maybe two well there were some meetings and at that time time it was a Justin Burns Justin Burns and Alex Ash and I

and and we had a meeting and we figured you know what this is an opportunity do we want a permanent one or do we want to build a a per or or aor mobile one or temporary permanent one I can't now then we needed to start adding bathrooms cuz they didn't have a bathroom we need to add some storage we didn't have storage they would just toss it to the side somewhere and meals we wanted to have be able to cook things and and make it bigger and we were trying to figure out the sizing and realized you know what we want to put into a concrete patio we wanted a concrete patio that led down to the Middle School area we wanted to set up some seatings with umbrellas and they were like yes

we're going to put all this together and it looked great we were excited but then the increase of cost our cost began to increase for materials to build it so then we had to start making Cuts we had to remove things we had to remove a lot of things and then they said you know what you're going to have to take this St take this out and saying we had too much and now this is what we've got and then at the same time we had Scott Kirby who became the interim superintendent and he said you know here's the money this has been funded from 2012 right but because we've had to eliminate a lot of the the things we wanted there was ended up no money for demoing the old one they had to

add more money so they were able to demo the old building so we said you know what they said you've got high school activity center they can share Middle School and High School can share they got to learn to work together you know high school they have their things to do and then middle school trying to join in and use their Activity Center I mean David op Bales Alex and I we had an Excel spreadsheet and every single day we put in all right this day middle school has the used activity center and then High School uses it and then we just had to put it all together then there was a bunch of conflicts between high school and middle school and having them use the activity center and have to later year or so

again and then we have to re-update it all okay what are the activities Middle School is doing what are the activities High School is doing and then putting it all together and submitting it and then finally you know I mean just amazing and I am so happy for the school and for CSD and I'm telling you man that's another barrier as a state employee over there no but I look forward to it know I'm still getting texes for him thank you Ethan with the new building there's been some problems we'd like Clark Brook to come up on stage and how it happened and how this has worked out and working with the state Clark can you come up please Talon's up okay I'm Clark BR former superintendent Amy nney where are you and she's our

current new superintendent but uh I'm happy to have an opportunity to be a part of this process though it was Ethan prior to but I wanted to share some things regarding facilities in general sometimes you think it's super easy to just build a building um but there's a lot of things involved in that process but first off I want to recognize the sil silver eagles the silver eagles are those who have retired from here yes those who have retired from here this will always be your home and why I mention you all is because you all have been a part of this project many things that have happened during that time is based off your knowledge of what this is used for your input in the process of it being uh built it's 12 since

0142012 so I call this a 12year project so thank you for your time here on this project every year the state legislation well how projects work here we have three sites CSD we have the blind school and the uh Diagnostic Center North the three of us do share some projects on the campus maybe our school might be responsible for paying one part of the project theirs for their own projects but some projects apply to all of us for example the fence is in the process that we're all involved in and if it was CSD only it would just be CSD involved in that process but not only with CSD we work with the Department of Education and the state special schools Division and we have people that we work with in that office there who

work with Department of general service Services who is responsible for State Property such as DMV the water agencies and what have you now this group is the ones that focus on facilities and CSD is here to support them and telling them what we want in these buildings it's not a daily maintenance like a broken wall or a broken toilet we take care of ourselves but major projects is when dgs gets involved so when legislation gives the money like as Ethan explained they budget for this and then the next comes up is the Department of Finance to they'll start looking into how to release those funds and a timeline then an architecture and then a civil services and an engineer that work with the city of Fremont and following city of Fremont's codes so that's what

causes a prolonged process uh maybe there's a shortfall on the state budget or there's a turnover and we have to explain what happened to the new people that are there or for example Co we were ready to go but then Co barred us from being able to continue with the project all that rain last year so I want to emphasize to thank California Department of Education Department of General services and everyone else involved in this process even though it's been a long process and you easily can lose patience but we work for the state so I want to thank you all for your input in this process I did see Ethan work with David and Alex and Justin Burns Justin Burns and trying to reduce cost like he just explained and it's not easy to

give up those things but here it is today now I'm hoping moving forward that any facility projects would include the schools for any input processes like recently we were talking about new cottages and they had a study for these Cottages but then these Cottages were put on hold hopefully that project will continue to happen and those who are involved in the blueprint and the discussion is student life so I think it's important moving forward that any projects need to include all of you it's not just them or them them but we need to get involved in the process to make make sure that we make it right for our students again congratulations and thank you Ethan and your team for all of your [Music] work thank you Clark Brook now we would like to introduce

people who want to share their memories from their time as a junior eagle and their messages and their stories Julie Bella from the Class of 1989 please come up hello I am Julie Bella I am an alumni of 1989 I joined Middle School in 1984 that was 40 years ago Middle School the junior Eagles Activity Center I have to thank Carla Pereira who was my former counselor who encouraged me to participate with different organizations with leadership and different events parties selling food back in there we had shelves that we sold food and the window that was right inside and also the haunted house that we had in there we would bring beds over and set them up make aisles ready for our haunted house I was new myself I went to a mainstream school I

was from the Fresno area my parents dropped me off and left Carlo was the one who helped encourage me involve in leadership I was shy no no she encouraged me to involve and then I became very involved when I finished Middle School I became in high school and then I sold for another four years became you know I started being part of leadership because starting in middle school because in middle school was social Center for all the kids getting together finally happy to see Middle School find Activity Center finally opening for parties leadership and making this happen this is a very special day for all of the middle school kids kids and those would be proud you will have Carla would be proud and you will make your own memories thank you Julie next we

will we have Chris to soua please come up hello hello and good morning everyone or good afternoon just a little bit about myself I'm from Santa Rosa Hidden Valley where I went to Hidden Valley I had a death program there the reason why I'm here at CSD is because of the school plague cuz I remember I went on a field trip and I saw sh Stern perform as Juliet and I said Mom I want to come here because of the school play and then when I got here my signing wasn't that great to be honest I used C sign and my confidence was pretty low but Junior Eagle they this helped me build my confidence through socialization friends and all of that one of the most uh favorite memories that I have here in the

past while I was a middle school student Cottages 11 12 13 and 14 were all full I was a cottage 14 student and that night a fire alarm went off so we all went out fire department came on and said it was all clear and we all came back went to sleep fire alarm went off again I had to get back up fire department had to come again set all clear we all went back to sleep a third and then a fourth and then a fifth time through the night it got to the point to where it had to have been a system glitch I don't know so Cottage is 11 12 13 and 14 we're full and what we had to do was all come here and sleep in here we had slept in

here through the night and I remember there was a moment at about 4: or 5 in the morning where I needed to go to the bathroom and I got up and I turned the light and the lights got turned on and it it was the staff and they were like it was Oscar I was like I just got to go to the bathroom he was the night attendant and he was the night attendant at the time so every time I walked by I always think of that story and now there's going to be a bathroom in there so that means everyone can sleep there thank you never heard that I know there was fire alarm that one I never heard that wow yeah hello thank you the next person who will talk like to invite

didn't have they had a mobile from Berkeley and they didn't even have a high school activity center at the time in the past it was called an Sr Activity Center Center so a senior activity senior so I had Derek was explaining that to me so in the past it was the senior activity scener and said and then people would just use that area Ken Norton was trying to figure out what to do and luckily at that time Berkeley they had that mobile so they brought it here and converted it and then here we are today so very very exciting history is always an inspiration to us and we're going to keep this here for another 45 years maybe even expand it then when we get more enrollment I don't know now the orange white and
