001Check. One, two, one, two. Check one, two. I was gonna say you like Check. One for two. You try making a sound. >> You try making a sound. >> No. What do you say? This is why we do it now. Talk on the microphone bounce everywhere. Check. One, two. It's on. Probably have a little delay. Check. One, two, one, two. Should be 15 second delay. How far up those meters left and right is it going? Check. What? What's that? Is it green, yellow? All green. Check. I just I brought up some more audio to you to see if hey check check When check How about now? Okay. How about now? Check. One, two. All right. So, I gave you a little more audio. I don't want to hey hey hey hey hey hey. One, two.

Thank you. Um, I'm going to kick it over first to Damon Whitaker. All right, Damon, take it away. >> Good evening board members. Thank you for having us here tonight. Um, first I would like to welcome um Chloe Bristol, Grace Anderson, and Jazelle Cruz to come up with me. Chloe is a teacher at Pleasant Valley High School. She teaches in our a program. She is our horiculture teacher in our pathway there and she has two amazing students who are going to come up and we're going to share with you um some of the great things that

004not only our horiculture pathway is doing but FFA in general too. So they have some information for you as they pass that to you. Um a is our third year at Pleasant Valley High School. We are so excited that it is there and they're doing amazing things. We just um our instructional council this morning passed um the second course, our horiculture 2 class. And so we'll be um having that class at Pleasant High School next year. So we hope to see a lot of the students from the horiculture one class transition 2 as we develop and continue to grow that pathway. So I will turn it over to the student. >> Good evening board members and guests. Thank you for inviting us to speak on behalf of the new horiculture pathway at Pleasant Valley High

005School. My name is Jesselle Cruz and I am a grade n student enrolled in the horiculture one course as well as an active member of >> Hi, I'm Grace Anderson. I'm a sophomore at Pleasant Valley High School this year and I'm also an active member. >> What is the horiculture pathway? First we would like to explain what our horiculture pathway encompasses. Currently we offer horiculture one an introduction to basiculture. This covers topics that include FFA foundational knowledge, soil formations and biology, soil chemistry, fertilization, landscape design, and integrated pest management. Students enrolled in this course are automatically enrolled members of Pleasant Valley FFA, which is a studentled organization that promotes agriculture education across the United States. Within FFA, Pleasant Valley High School students have a unique opportunity to build leadership skills, technical skills, and vocational agriculture

006and create lifelong friendships with peers at our school and others alike. In horiculture run one, this semester, we have completed activities surrounding the following topics. Leadership and employability skills. We were tasked with several challenges and worked alongside our peers to solve. We also created resumes with work experience and applied for mock jobs and conducted interviews for those jobs. FFA history. We unpacked the history of FFA and how it brought us here. Paying attention to our legacy helps us understand why agriculture education is important. Plant biology. We studied the organ. We also conducted on the transfer of nutrients from colored water into celery stocks. We collected leaf samples and got and got to study their composition from their veins to their overall shape and arrangement. We collected this information in a leaf journal with sketches and

007scientific naming. And we also dissected alia flowers and examined their reproductive systems while explaining the process of pollination in a complete flower. We studied the USDA plant and built a farming company based on selected location and average annual winter temperatures of that area. Soil ribbon recentilistics to identify soil types. I'm glad I got the opportunity to take an ACT class and get science credit at the same time. This class has taught me responsibility and time management, and I appreciate that I get to take classes that I choose and apply what I learned from these classes into the real world. I'm glad to take this class because I get science credits in a fun way. I get to make new join. It's also interactive and it's informing. Thank you again for giving us the opportunity to

008speak to you on behalf of the new horiculture pathway at Pleasant Valley High School. We hope this has been helpful information for you and look forward to the growth of our PBHS program. Before they leave, does the board have any questions for the young ladies? >> Sure. Does that mean are either of you looking? >> Yeah, I hope to get a career in agriculture, but I don't know what I want to do. But I know I do want to do something in agriculture. >> I have the I want a question. >> Yeah, I would say the majority of our program is probably upper classman because Our first year, the sophomores that or the freshman that started it are now juniors. And we still have a lot. I volunteered. [laughter] >> Well, you did a great

009job. Nice job. Anyway, hello. >> Thank you. Um, thank you very much for this and and I'm sure David can appreciate this that I wish this program was around when my son went to P because he did get a animal science degree and this really would have been a great program to have. So, I'm so thankful that you guys have this opportunity to kind of expand into a whole different world. >> Thank you so much. Appreciate your time. All right. Next up, we do have Chico High is here also. Um, so Erica, yes, Erica Sheridan, principal. We'll take over from here. >> My name is Erica Sheridan, principal of Chico High School, and I brought with me some CTE art students and our fabulous, one of our fabulous art teachers from Chico High School, Tiffany

010Rid. let her introduce her folks and kind of talk about the program. Okay. So, I'm Tiffany Ren. I teach intro to art class. I also teach glass design. We also have digital art. I'm just one of our teachers at Ohio and I started a club that is a leadership and marketing club. So I brought a couple of my students with me that are my entrepreneurs. So my art entrepreneurs about a really hosting market. Hi, my name is Abby and I am a senior atos and I'm a senior enrolled in the advanced class. So our holiday market is the art departmentally annual holiday market. Our vision for this market that we are going to have will be a celebration of culture inclusivity as well as cheer. We want it to be a place where family and

011friends can come together and shop, buy things they like, create some things and just celebrate the new season coming about. Our event is a collaboration of multiple departments at Chico High. We have a lot of different people who are part of this and it's led to try and encourage our entrepreneurship opportunities. Some things you can expect to see at our event are a lot of gift items for sale such as glass products, ceramics, baked goods and holiday cards. Some familyfriendly activities as well such as mosaic coasters, a photo booth, print making and also henna. There will also be studentled performances which is group by improv theater and Victorian Save the date. Saturday, December 6. We're so excited about our event. >> High 11. I have a question. >> When we create something and we sell

012it to us, um it is directly going to us unless it is something that has been donated to us by either a past student or something our very artistic teacher made us. Um then it goes back into the clubs and that helps to pay for vendor fees or decorations for our booth like >> Thank you so much. So nice to meet you. We want to just dive in to the superintendent reports. All right. So, we have some some more good news. I love starting with good news. Damon Whitaker is up for this one. Thank you again. Um I do have to confess uh my mother told me never to lie and um I did share a little white lie to get the next two individuals um to make an appearance here this evening. Um the

013first one um he believes he's here to talk about safety, campus safety and security and supervision. Um, but like Greg said, he's here for a much better topic and um, something that I I feel I'm so glad to be recognizing him tonight. So, John For, will you come up and join me? I just wanted to say two words. Thank you very much for these kind words. I come in every day just started with this guy over I practice leadership John John >> John had the pleasure of meeting two years in row table. My turn. My turn. I will know. I will The same thing was saying is that the LCAP means while all campus supervisors they can name them by name your name and your connection to students was above

018and beyond. But I also have the privilege of working with you. So this is like so welld deserved and this is all for real. This is who is a nice >> I also am here tonight to celebrate another staff member who thought he was going to talk about the institutional history of Pleasant Valley High School for the some of the new board members who want to learn more about Pleasant Valley High School. So, Bill, you want >> Well, funny story. So, immediately I get on the phone to call his wife and I call from the school phone and she answers, "Hey, darling." And um I said, "Nope, wrong person." Um and she said, as we were talking, she said, "As soon as you got done talking to Bill about coming, he texted me and said,

019"What's going on? will you go with me to this board meeting? And so I'm thrilled that she's here as well, too. Um, but I would like to share with you and celebrate an extraordinary individual whose dedication has shaped the lives of countless students and defined the spirit of Pleasant Valley High School community for nearly three decades. I have a personal connection to Bill Flory. Um, he helped shape, emold, and um, transform my daughter while she was at Pleasant Valley High School. Um she was very introverted as a young lady and um his um profound involvement in her life as a field hockey coach really helped change her um drastically in such a positive way and it transformed her into um this introvert who was shy and had a lot of anxiety into someone who was

020really outgoing and um experienced such a wonderful opportunity that Bill gave her. um letting her her having the experience of playing for Bill for um the better part of two and a half years. Um so I am completely honored to recognize Bill Flory with the superintendence award. For 23 years, Bill has been a true pillar of Pleasant Valley High School. His commitment is measured not just in years, but in the enduring impact he has made, whether through the periodic table or the playbook. In the classroom, Bill is renowned as a masterful science teacher. He has inspired curiosity and critical thinking, turning complex subjects into accessible and exciting journeys of discovery. What truly sets Bill apart is his unique genuine gen unique genius for engagement in the deep investment in every student's success. He doesn't just

021teach the curriculum, he connects it directly to the lives and interests of the students, transforming abstract concepts into dynamic, relevant and hands-on lessons. This level of professional personal care ensures he sees and cultivates the potential in everyone. Bill's dedication to inclusivity in education has made a profound difference, ensuring every student receives the personalized support and encouragement needed to achieve their potential in science. Bill's passion for science has laid a strong foundation for the future success, guiding countless students and teaching them how to think like successful, resilient people. Bill's influence extends well beyond the classroom walls and into our athletic programs. He was instrumental in establishing our athlete committed program, serving as its coordinator for several years, demonstrating his commitment to the holistic well-being of our student athletes. As a longtime coach, he has been a

022formative leader, instilling discipline, teamwork, and a powerful sense of resilience in his players. Bill was directly responsible for revitalizing our field hockey programming program, transforming it into a source of pride and success while mentoring young athletes, fostering a genuine love for competition and championing sportsmanship. Bill has shown our students what it means to lead with character. Bill Flory has continuously gone above and beyond proving that teaching is not just a job, but a lifelong commitment to mentorship. Thank you, Bill, for your incredible service to Pleasant Valley High School and to the students. We are truly fortunate to have Well, I am surprised might be something else, but I can't think. Um, I'm humbled to have done this. Um, I uh I love teaching. I when I sit in a room or talk with other people

023about it, I think I've been told my passion comes out and I just been fortunate to be able to bring this out to the students for all these years for 30 years. I just love it. Um, and the subject is just part of it, but it's helping mold our future leaders and teaching um, not only the subject, but kids to be human beings and to be the best human being they can be, whatever they do. And um, having patience and kindness and being as much of a role model as I can be at all times for them, you know, an adult that cares, be there for them. He mentioned field hockey which um you know it's not a sport I play I went to Pleas but I coach football play football track but uh it

024was probably the best decision I'd ever made. I didn't realize what a coach of senior girls and just that much was something I was supposed to do a little gap. I ended up doing it was amazing a lot of fun and I've always enjoyed teaching from starting at my alma mo of the high school. Okay, my turn because I I was honored to be able to work with you for many years as well and um especially the last few years that I taught at P and I taught special ed and um your willingness to work with students with IEPs and help with their accommodations and um just really care about work with those students was immensely appreciated on my so that's another President Lando I have a little bit more good news that we would

025like to share from our over here if you don't mind. >> Absolutely. >> Okay, Tina, take it away. >> Good evening, board. I do have two announcements I wanted to share. They both relate to our community schools. The first announcement is just in recent days, we received the state funding to implement the community schools model at Little Chico Creek that we've been waiting for. They have jumped right into the process to hire a social worker and other things that they had applied for. They are very excited. will be our fifth community schools site. So that's very exciting on that end of town. And second announcement is speaking of community schools, one update that I want to share with you is how the community schools grants are working across town, specifically at our alternative education site.

026with their community schools money that site purchased a passenger van to address truency on their site hoping to see a rise in attendance of their kids. I have some pretty astounding numbers to share with you how Fairview High School last year at the end of the year had a 66% attendance rate. Currently today they sit at 80 % attendance rate. Academy for Change last year at the end of the year sat a 28.4% attendance rate. Currently today they are at 79.4% attendance rate and center for alternative learning our site the end of last year they sat at 50.2% % attendance. Today they are at 83.7% attendance. I encourage you to reach out to Andrew Maul and his team at any time. He's happy to share more information about how they did this. But in his

027words, it is a massive team effort. They work alongside buses and teaching kids how to utilize transportation, public transportation safely. And they're getting a school where I quote We're happy those kids are getting anybody else on board. In that case, let's go ahead and skip right past it. I missed our CSA. Yes. Good evening everyone. Thank you Chico Unified for supporting classified employees. This month of being thankful with the gratitude grams going out was a great way to thank each other and we are so grateful to honor one of our own tonight. Like to introduce Holly Poniano Chico 110 vice president. Thank you for having us invest [clears throat] for only about three and a half She currently drives our students from ages three to about 22 specifically our special students. So that's a very

028unique position I find that would take a lot of talent to um be part of her day of her day and be aware of that. Um, one of the quotes she gave me spoke with her and told her about the word that she drives all of our little angels and we have to agree on that. Um, she is also complimentary of all of her co-workers saying that, you know, being a bus driver is just one of the best jobs ever and she recently had some more interactions with the transportation department who were very hard to nail down in a regular working day. So, it's been really nice hearing from present to her. Um, she was nominated by other members who had things to say about her most especially the children the most. So, that is

029always something important to us as well as we folks in the district. But being a bus driver, I would imagine a lot of you and so for me of the month Awesome. Thank you so much. Rolling right along. Do we have any more announcements from the board? Our next item is items from the floor. Do we have anybody who wishes to address the board on the agenda? So, tell us who you are at 30 seconds. >> Okay. Hi, my name is Tammy and I'm happy to be here speaking with all of you tonight. I noticed your agenda on items from the floor, a letter from professor from state regarding the removal of a pride flag in the classroom in high school. And I wanted to speak to that. LGBTQ youth are four times more likely

030to attempt suicide than their peers. In a 2021 peer-reviewed study published in the American Journal of Community Psychology, they found that greater experiences Minority stress are associated with increased odds of attempting suicide and LGBTQ youth are reported four types of minority stressors. Those are physical harm, discrimination, housing instability and students being at 12 odds of attempting suicide. But there is some good news. There is something that we can do about it. LGBTQ youth who have access to affirming spaces have rates of suicidality and depression. Youth who have just one accepting adult in their life have lower rates of attempting suicide and higher levels of self-esteem. Pride flags are not political. We have people that fall into the LGBTQ and we care about our children. We will ensure that they know We have anyone else who

031wishes to address right along to the consent calendar. First of all, are there Members of the board would like to pull an item from discuss So I'm not sure about whe If there's any question, two Thank you very much. Do we have let's handle those first? to contact in general. Yeah, sure. Thank you for asking a great question because you're right after school program. What are Chromebooks for those kids that homework of the after school program and they have to do their homework for it. The Chromebooks in the classrooms don't have to make sure there is a student that might need it. Again, great question. Schools are not homes with kids. So there unfortunately they break easily about 12 broken replacements on each question. I want to be sure to clarify that. Are you talking

032about Um, on the same note, we had measure clarified. I know business question. I thought that's why not conflict. So she was already 65% When I look at the achieve, series allocation, series So how it works is voters authorized 239. So what we do is we break that out. I don't know why I got measured. in my head over and over. But when I read it out loud, One more time. Anybody want to have any more discussion? Seeing none, do we have a motion? >> All right, we have a motion by a second. under the wire. All right. Um is there any further debate? And since it is our first uh action of the evening, I'm going to ask for a roll start. I >> thank you very much. >> All right, moving on to

033section our discussion action calendar. Our first item is 911 item 911 which is only item regarding learning communities success program. There he is. building. There we go. All right. So, with that said, all right, I'll do it again. Well, good afternoon, school board. Well, I do want to let you know that from here on out, I'll call the learning for school success. I'll just call it the LCSSP. In my world, that's what I use all the time. And so, just want to let you know that it is a threeyear grant coming to the tune of $1.9 million. And so, um it started during the 24 25 school year and it goes through uh 26 27 years. Um, but before I get into the details, I think I have to do this justice by doing a

034little shout out to Michelle Bunch and to Tiffany Haringer who are our Unified School District writers. They do a fabulous job searching for writing these. So the purpose of this grant is to improve attendance in Chico Unified School District by focusing on expanded services uh mentorship and academic emotional support for all our targeted groups. And then part of the LCSSP accountability requirement is for me to present to the G5 school board the initiatives that are supported by the grant and also to were by the metrics show. So the key funded initiatives are well there's seven in total four on this we hired uh two reset teachers which students are put into in school suspension and reset they get to stay inside the class or They get to stay inside a classroom but outside of the

035school but they still get to do their work and they stay on campus and receive interventions. So Chico High and PB got the hire. So that's the first one is campus supervisors. We were able to to hire on board at the secondary level five campus supervisors each secondary site. So two high sorry two at the high school level and Along with that, we have programs and I do want to do another shout out to Jessica for instilling the PBIS in the program and I do want to say currently Hooker Oak and Marsh Junior High School are developing the SE lighthouse project. So, just want to let you know that that is coach Rudy and we see great things coming from those schools and I expect that next year they do the full implementation of the

036lighthouse project. >> Yeah. >> So what we do is because students aren't necessarily suspended, >> right? >> Yes. And so you don't want to hire a full credential teacher to take that slot because quite frankly that teacher may not have students in but what you can do is you can go with the substitute credential teacher that is suspended to be there or you can contract them out for a specified period of time in preparation for things that might be that might uh benefit from being inet. No, no, no, no. Yes, that can happen. The other thing is you can contract them out. So say, hey, listen, I'd like to bring you in from this time to this time or this period to this period, this month, that month. So they're each school is budgeted to

037allow for that to happen for the whole entire school year. So just depends how they want to use it. >> It definitely can. Yes. So it's both. And so meaning um I'm junior high principal or high school principal and I say hey you know what it seems to me I'm looking at my disciplinary concerns here and there's a pattern Thursdays and Fridays usually something is happening and usually there's some pushing or some advance I can call >> and also here on this one you'll see the table that's launched. And I do want to give another shout out to Kate Ory who's our data analyst. I'm gonna talk about here a little bit couple more slides, but just want to say that she did amazing job creating certain data pages for all of us to see

038that you can see here shortly. second part of key initiatives. Um, three of these, the laundry support for homeless youth, the supplies for some of our students, and then the bike repair uh program, repair program at PD High School. Those are all headed and supported by Jamie Mclofflin. She's our homeless and foster youth and program coordinator. So she supersedes all this and just ensures that all of her student populations of students that need support get these services. And then you have the lead stars mentoring that one on the left hand bottom left hand corner. We have Martha Mcmore. She's the wellness counselor out of Fairview and she's heading this one and she's got this club per se working at uh both all three high schools and when I say all three I middle schools are

039now on board and so it's a mentor program where we focus on some of our um students of color and uh we do some um identity building with them and some academic guidance and we go on field trips. It's very very positive building. And last another uh project here is uh we do raising highly capable kids which used to be called parent program. So we educate our parents, those that come in and uh it's tailored to meeting specific family needs and covering topics like understanding the school process. So of course all our targeted case managers are on board with provide food right across the street over here by our wonderful question. >> I do actually. Scroll down. October 29th, November 5th, 12th, 19th, December 3rd. All right. So, um, say that I am super excited

040about this page. Um, it's I I can't even share how excited because as an administrator to be able to have this data that you see up here and this is just a snapshot of some of the data that is updated daily. Up here you will see and I just want to focus on the little component that says from 66.9% data confirmation. That's a huge number. 66.9% is the data confirmation from last year and that right there is all toent because of this page that was created by Kate and provided to all our schools and our targeted managers, everybody coming together to target all our parents that we made contact with them so that we can get data confirmation to that level is incredible. It is truly a effort to make this happen. This could not

041have happened without data. Here's the beauty of this. Later on, I will be discussing you guys out of this funding. So, just want to bring that up there. Um, I also want to bring to your attention, you will see uh the third column there, it says students with disabilities. I want to let you know that that is in this page because that is something that keeps track of because it's import But in the subsequent pages that is not a metric warranted or provided. So just want to make that absolutely clear that you won't see that there'll >> I sites just doing visits and I believe I was at LCC and it was like a competition we only Four more pairs. We only need four more pairs. We're going to get 100%. We're going to get

042100% data confirmation. Come on, you guys. Let's do this. And they're just so motivated to reach out and make that contact. It was it was a beautiful site to Yes. Imagine being at a school site and being able to say we made contact in itself. That is amazing. not something that it's very difficult to keep track of those things with this page here every single day. Oh, where are we? We got to get better. >> Oh, yes, I can. So, Kelvin students are we do a Kelvin survey which the component, you know, checking up on our students, making sure that they're doing well. They like being in school, they feel supported, they feel supported by teachers, that goes out. I'll be talking about that here shortly. >> No, I like the joke. All right. So,

043uh the next page uh here is something that's pretty and just just to let you know part of the grant is for me to present what was reported uh that had to be reported on October 30th. And so, um you will see here as well the date that says of 10 because I like things early in advance. So, that's when I turn this let you know that it did not get updated here because I let them know this is what was going to all but some highlights you will see the reset room in terms of days you had 89 at the high school of course that was the 24 25 school year for comparison you will see then 23 24 you only had four days but that's because we didn't have the grant teachers. Interesting

044enough, the high schools had only used it once home. So in all of 242 school year, you had 2418, but 2526 as of 10 We still got the rest. Yeah, there's a lot of caring and I think that's the part of sometimes it's not and I'm hoping that you do get to see that in order to do some of this there's a lot of heart there's a lot of passion there's a Definitely a lot of trying to make sure that my hat goes off to everybody involved here. >> Yes. >> Involvement I will get there. population. There's a significant decrease >> just for you. So, I'll be quiet until you get to number seven. No, you're on number seven until you get to 11. >> Okay. >> Don't forget >> or I won't. >> Although

045although mine aren't numbered either, so I will forget, >> but you know, you'll there's plenty of us to remind each other. >> All right. But the next one, uh, program outcomes and attendance. And so, um, as we go through this data, I just want to very clear. I'm just going to highlight because you could do major dives, but let's just get to the nitty-gritty. So, district quiet attendance has remained consistently strong between 91 to 94% over the past four years with only minor fluctuations. Overall attendance for all students has held steady between 23 to 24 at 93.4% and then to 25 school year holding at 93.3% which reflects stable engagement with regards to program outcomes on chronic absenteeism. You will see it shows steady and significant improvement districtwide decreasing from 27.1% from 2122 school year

046to 16 in the 23 24. Keep this in mind when more kids are coming to school. You can't help but know that they are learning and that will definitely show somewhere in the future that kids are learning. So just planting that seed Yes, that is correct. I don't have the numbers in front of me. Yeah, if you recall too in the previous slides, you know, have noticed that the contact rate, you just can't help but go Is that a correlation? I can tell you. All I can tell you is that substantially as of 10. So hopefully we have the new numbers and we'll see. as it was shared earlier this evening already going way way down which is another to program outcomes with regards to school climate outcomes of uh the social emotional learning has

047been consistent per se from 2122 school year to the 24 25 school year And then when you look at the 10 column, you will see favorable results across all subgroups. Kids feel safe about school. You will also see the foster just a little junior high pulse because I used to be a junior high throwing this out there. But with kids, kids at the junior high level, they are extremely honest because I don't know if they know how to not speak their mind at times. So with just a little thing out there, you'll see the 2526 school year. You'll see that percentage of students responding favorably. Uh within the pulse, which is Kelvin survey and the PBIS and how it's affecting school culture, you'll see that 92.56% of our students respond. So that's pretty impressive numbers.

048parental involvement and uh once again targeted case manager contact rates have remained relatively stable over time fluctuating between 12 to 15% and then uh for all students and settling in at 12.6% if you look at that top line as of October 25 indicating steady outreach across all levels now um I think there was a I do believe that there is a um on that 17.7% you'll see that kind of on the low side but you got to remember that's Y stuff that we deal with issues of their kids. So, I was looking for Just to be very clear, you will see that for every single column, there's a year to work on that. And we got, let's say, if you look at the 24 25 school year down, we covered 19. So economically disadvantaged. We

049had a whole year to cover that. We currently have 17.7% of to make contact with that population of students. >> Oh, absolutely. What this shows that >> is correct. >> It is anything we can do to support our target managers together. Can I ask a question? So, are they separated? Because I would think that if you're homeless, you're also socioeconomically disadvantaged not. So it gets a little muddy. It can get a little I'm not are not >> correct. Yeah. explanation. >> You're not missing anything. Obviously. Say that one more time. within the next page. Just move forward with this. Uh from the 21st 22nd uh sorry from the 21st uh 2021 to 2022 through 2425 social contact by counselors and counseling assistants increased overall across all student groups reflecting stronger student engagement and support again

050so future bad news right now but some good news so the bad news is I do not a little bit more purposeful and intentional with what we do because it drives a lot of our decisions to focus our energies where things might be most needed. So with that um just want to throw this out there in terms of future goals and sustainability. So the first one is funding approach. So the LCSSP is integrated with some of thes and then you might have to sustain initiatives like reset rooms programs uh and ensuring continuation beyond with regards to improve attendance and increase revenue. Efforts to improve attendance not only benefit students but it also boosts our ADA. increases our funding. So reinforcing our program being able to support that and then driven adjustments like I said before

051having data informed decisions forward that's huge and that's all because of editing best practices CUSD is embedding trauma informed practices and equity based interventions districtwide professional development policy. Before I leave, I do want to go back to this wonderful page that I keep I look at every day because if you're not proud, you should be very proud of this. Very few schools This is a brainchild of Tim. So he's not here today, but I do want to also provide a shout out question to your students. Thank you very much. Do we have any other questions? Do we have any? >> Yeah, he's just adding this school into contacting parents to get this data. It started with a very simple we administration office to teachers to target man. Doesn't matter who they were, they were there

052to help. And it just started with a very simple tremendous group of people. That said, comities for school success program. This was an information item on it. Thank you again for bringing this app and we're going to move on to item 921 business services. Our first item is the discussion about measure C charter school allocation. What do you have? million,000 deadline on Just be clear for public, we did make an error and there was a little bit of confusion as well in that uh when we acted regarding measure C request for the group at our last regular meeting we approved full amount for the lang. So we were a little stuck here a little bit or back or any given that there is no real clear obvious the best way forward. I would like to

053go ahead and open this up for discussion unless you have any >> question from perspective. said. So again, we're to pick and I'm happy to immediately do this. I' got a couple ideas repeating So just for the record 5 million 4,000 remaining 97. So that's where we're at right now. That motion passed as it was and now we have to do this 1.0 obviously. I just wonder how They do have percent. I don't believe November. together. 47% of which so This is just I want to know I mean Um, I don't know whe We are invest My last meeting almost endotion. I want to clarific. My motion is follow >> almost There was 1.9 almost. One choice. So that being said, what was your original motion? I heard you say that >> there's no I

054want to be clear. There's no mot But her idea is to reason. We have a couple steps to take. I want to make sure everyone on the board And I do want to also real have this as on the big screen. >> November My motion is to have 1,100 no together Make that motion second. Is there any further debate? I'm conflicted on this one. I'll be honest. Um because I am not sure anything like the school they were envisioning. And I want to My number one priority after I know I've heard a couple other project would like to see this go back into the pot and see them reapply with a new plan even if they get everything they want to have roughly million out of this pot and notion So what I would prefer

055to see I think is to say yeah to do that our goal with this money like a a plan addresses the actual fun. Yeah, I don't think the money here is going to get them where they want to go regardless. It's a small patch of land. It's going to be hard to develop expensive and I don't want to just give them a check for a bunch of money. Yes, that's correct. >> In that case, I'd like to put forward a motion um that we um which is in two parts. that we put this money back into the pot and announce to our charter school partners that we will be taking uh applications for the December deadline. um and make sure that we do reach out to let them know that and also that we agree

056that we would uh that it is a priority of the board to see who will get >> okay on this on the motion on the table then put one million back in the pot but also any other charter members interested any questions on that? I don't see any there. So, let's go ahead Yes. Um, I'm not asking to do anything. I'm asking our staff to reach out and make sure that know they are our priority. I'm asking you guys to reach out to them. You're putting that as a part of your motion >> to directing staff to reach out and make sure >> I don't feel like >> how I inter to me. Yes. That's the way I'm taking that. and I did not need to add and I will say as we will make

057sure >> however I Certainly, President's ultimately come back and show us whether or not that happens. I don't know. So just to clarify the motion is put the 1 million00 back out >> for the December. That's the shortened version. Yes. >> Your directive to staff is make sure communication is done well. >> Yes. And I say there was a second, but I would like to reiterate as we would like to see facility. >> So it's a priority >> doesn't mean it's going to happen. >> It's on our radar and something we would like to From an evalu But we're still following >> last time we had this conversation. Last time we had this conversation um we basically not similar but sort of ideas. All us >> and I feel like I don't think I don't

058think I think the I'm certainly not trying to the motion is in no way to change or again something that Y for lack of better word. Yeah. And if it's not, it's not it's not that they're not a priority. It's just that based on the rubric, you know, the strongest the I want to make this for the minutes and sounds like we have two different things. So for clarity I think we should have two separate things. One is this is what happen for that and then comment mot So it's clear I think it'll be clear regardless but I hear that you're asking >> so let's go ahead and I would like to simply return the new found00 that's the moment All right. Any comment on that one? >> I'm gonna go straight ahead to um

059calling the vote and I would like to do a roll call and name vote. I'm going to start with you. We'll go to the right. Okay. >> I pass one. And then I would like to make a motion that uh the board in a nonbinding but supportive way recognizes the importance of getting permanent. >> Any debate on that one? Yeah. Well, honestly, my knowledge and while I think the board made decision made in good faith, I still want to let them know that this is put it out in public that we do in that regard. I actually October I remember public statement support. I guess that was my We understanded my secondbody. Second 30 seconds pops up. Are there any? All right. See, I'm going to go ahead and move us on to Item 931formational

060only is a discussion regarding changes to assembly bill. So this is one that I brought up a little bit. Um that said uh 1390 uh was an assembly bill is now law. It changes the maximum uh compensation allowable. Currently, school boards uh trustees are compensated for their time fashion based on the size of school. Small school districts $400 with the new with the passage of this law that maximum increases to the max and I put this on the agenda for a number First of all, when legislature first uh agreed to compensation school board $400 a month was a very different number. That was 1984. $400 went much further. One of the reasons then for compensation school board members was that we didn't only want independently wealthy or families with only kind of dynamic and in

061the past we have seen people on fixed income serve on this board. We have seen single parents serve on this board and I think it is good for the community and good for our constituents uh that we have multitude of types back on the board. I do believe that some kind of compensation we have entrepreneurs on the board as well right people who are giving up time they could be running their own business to do this I think I think it does widen the pool service I have a number it's not a motion discussion but I just labor's inflation calculatorusted $4004 comes out to 1,275 98 so the intent of the legisle back in ' 84 was also that a former member wrote in and said we could potentially attach that number The lowest hour.

062We have a number of ideas. And with that, I would love to hear any discuss. Mr. President, I just want to make sure this is anformational. The plan for today is just to say, hey, this was this bill was enacted. Starting January having our government organiz Mr. President, I'd like to put out their request of staff to prepare a resent. I'm not going to suggest what the words are, but the intent is that the wishes to act on these billion dollar. So I have question number Well, it's ultimately your decision to make. I think that I think that some robust discussion could take place today to sort of narrow the field down a little bit. I mean, if you know, but ultimately you don't want to do that, that's okay. Do it in >> December.

063What I want to say, this is important. It's not I happen to know 2017. Correct me if I'm wrong. our administrators. So I look at it and I think I appreciate how money possible. still. I also want to point out that Council members That's not that I just think that First of all, you're talking about trans which I wasn't even aware of's great value in that insurance that just Absolutely. So that was just a real eye opener and I know it's insane for everyone as we know insane but I'm not in profession and I do feel that it's not just about the homework that we do before getting the meetings that we have to get clarific contact with the site's there's a lot to iterate for connection No one other local city work. But it

064is again my hope is that you just point that I want to support And I think that we would open the gate for more parents. It just is so expensive with other number. to put that issue as a bar for I I agree. That's probably my strongest support is You're right. Before You said at the very beginning, can you repeat the part at the very beginning when you said that there were two different thought you had about coming up with the number? One was based off the based on >> the second one was actually our lowest hourly rate for employee estate. >> Yeah, I think that's um you made an interesting point about wanting to connect it. I think it's important that you're connecting it to the important work that you're doing because it is

065and also um as well. Um, a lot of those staff members work in classrooms directly with my son and their work selfishly is really important to my family to my son. I would love to see both of those numbers increase across the board. But I think that's a good starting point is using that in addition One of the hat. something. Oh, okay. All of our schools are amazing, right? I just think And my staff members haven't There was significant debate about the numbers as well. They said okay inflation but also the amount of hours of time and public has changed a lot. The role of a school board member has changed the hourly also inreased part of So again, there's a lot of ways we could go. This is not an action item. That said,

066I think that it would probably to have a resolution ready for next time. Any other comments? I know that a month. 400 to 8. The lights will stay on. Thank you very much. December meeting about That's it. That call that item closed. You have a pretty good idea what we ask you to do in terms of 931. Okay. Um, item 9.3.2 is alsoformational. Just want to have a quick discussion regarding uh the election of officers in preparation for next month. Cannot believe that it is almost December already. We will shuffle up the officers a joy and a blur to be president for a year. Really kind of fascinating. But often when we have organization meetings in December, there's a lot of hum and about who's going to have the gavl vice president. So what I'd

067like to do is simply ask if right now anybody thinks that they would like to be I'm willing to do that. I'm not I will say I do not intend to be the president next year. I really want to get back for something that we rotate around the meeting to have a little more perhaps I think that is more argument like it was for a couple years around especially our district. So with that said, I would be happy to serve it. I have no nominated for I'm also really grateful. We do have CSBA. That said, in the past organizer, offer up their something about me. Thank you. I definitely would that I want you to know. member of my 14 years. It does increase the number of hours that you spend Absolutely. >> I am

068going to the president's not with the idea that I would actually be the president under my belt right now. As far as qualifications, experience obvious to take that on. Anybody else have any questions? president. >> I I will just support whoever decides to do this and whoever wins the election. I just want you to know I got your back and I'll help you through anything that you need help with. We'll we'll do this together. >> You're not alone. >> And we have a really good team. I feel so good about this team that we have here that you know you're not doing it alone. And so that's the beauty of it all that we all have each other's backs. Is there any comment from the public? Okay. In that case, I think we're going to

069call one and we're going to move on to 933. This is alsoformational. Uh it is regarding a draft of our board meeting. We're kind of prepping for our organization meeting in December. not you summed it up very well. Forward in December that he will ultimately discuss or change and then something will be approved in December. So, uh this is a particular draft and take a look at it now and December and if you have any questions reach out and I just wanted to get it in your hand. Thank you. I will say I know one of your priorities has been to ease the burden of Wednesday nights on staff. So we are looking at a fewer fewer special meetings with the ide decides yes more time for let's make a special meeting and we can

070do that no problem and I do want to say that I recognize that it might look a little we but the meetings really are the tip of the iceberg for a lot of what we do we talking and I really respect your calendar. I know sometimes people have for a long time answer one or two that's worth thinking about. It is by no means an overnight you guys know appeally we're However, so much going on this particular for special. I was in education for 27 years. I still Let us remind ourselves just now. looking at our gaps. So, I don't want to discourage choose. >> Thank you. And I also But I do think our >> we didn't select our workshop topics. So there are things I'd like to see on those. This is not

071set in stone. Another thing we talked about they're thinking about They want to keep on coming to work. Appreciate >> comicated. Let's go ahead and think about how we're going to set up what we're going to act on in December. all the way to it. It is further discuss. So um section 11 of our agenda is always me agenda and as always we do have a couple of these we need to be real careful about so one of these items I'm a real brief like overview and then we'll ask questions only. So our first item two have been brought forward this time. First up is a discussion about whe possibilities. They've come in the past. Any question or comments on this one? We have motion. Can we make that happen? >> Okay. Any further Very

072good. In that case, I would like to call for a vote. Let's start with member Robinson. All >> right, that is a 41 pass. >> Thank you very much. Um, the last item for potential is a request to discuss Potentially adding a student consultation period by redant for a period together. [music] So again, students teachers are the intent to discuss the idea. And obviously necessary teachers February next members. >> Yes. First of all, I think this is an administrative decision that should be discussed and evaluated. And my biggest concern, not my biggest concern, concern would be accountability. Where is that? Are they getting >> debating the I guess my question of clarification I really wanted to make sure that asking me if We understand what you're getting at any question about what I understand. I'm

073concerned that there are a lot of levels in this Even if you discussed it and decided, yeah, let's look into it and now it's February or March and then we go to our unions and our teachers and our students and we say hey we're thinking about this and they go thanks or whatever they say. I mean there's just a lot of it's not just you saying let's do it and then it happens. I mean as much as I'd like to say that that's the case it's just not. So I'm not discussion is going to unfold for you. I mean it's if you want us to do a you know interest survey let's say or find out from some people this is something that can happen we can do that before you even decide you want

074to discuss it I mean that's I understand what you're saying I get it but at the same time I don't know that it's possible that's where I'm at and I'm just concerned that you're going to go through this process and then it's not going to be especially for next year talkingers. ide issues. as a board do we want to support those students or others and feel like it's important to say I'd like I think it's clear discussion about process that Is there anybody ask? So is there a motion? have a discussion about whe There are no further items for potential agendment on the agenda. So with that, I'm going to uh make a motion to the meeting. Second all those favor signify by saying I. That's it. Thank you very much. We are
