001e e e when you're doing you good evening everybody thank you for being patient as you as you came in uh we have a very very packed house tonight which is great to see um thank you for taking your time out of your evening to celebrate the class of of uh 2024 U seal of biliteracy recipients um we have students actually receiving the Seal of by literacy in three languages tonight we have Spanish French and Chinese we're celebrating these students as they graduate um I as a former principal at rosale I've seen a lot of former parents walking through and former kids although they're a little bit hard to recognize uh these days from elementary school um and the you parents in the audience and family members you know how hard these kids have worked
002um they are here because of how hard they worked and the support that you've given them over the years so thank you parents and family members we're here to celebrate you to as well tonight [Applause] the Sealab by literacy was started by the state of California a number of years ago in order to encourage the study of other languages of languages other than English um in the state of California obviously California is a very very diverse State um we have a large number of languages spoken in the state the state recognizes the value of having biliterate students um businesses and colleges do as well I could read you you all the stats I could bore you with stats on how much businesses like to hire biliterate uh folks um into their organizations and how colleges
003welcome uh biliterate students into their onto their campuses so this is a huge achievement for these students um and we're here to celebrate them tonight we're going to start off uh with a Ballet Folklorico performance from the chico High Ballet Folklorico group [Music] what a point to [Music] every fore speee [Music] there [Music] foreign [Applause] spee fore for [Music] [Applause] thank you Chico High Ballet Folklorico um at this time um I would like to ask the chico High teachers to meet me up here on stage through the hallway and I would like the chico high students to move to the hallway we'll be honoring Chico High first [Applause] w e right right here all right as we get organized up here and the students uh are meeting us backstage I just wanted to take a
004moment to thank the teachers um we have a number of world language teachers here tonight from both high schools who worked very hard with these students um getting them excited about uh learning a language and guiding them through high school but I also wanted to acknowledge the world language teachers at the uh junor high level and the immersion teachers um at Rosedale over the years who have worked so hard to get these students um by [Applause] literate joining us tonight to hand out medallions um we have J marant assistant superintendent of educational services for Chico Unified and we have Pedro Caldera [Music] [Applause] a lots of folks here Noam former PR former principal at Chico Junior High um and the new uh director of secondary education and Chico Unified this year with that I'm going

012um the seals themselves will be a fix to diplomas for your graduation and that's the the official uh Award of the California state seala by literacy so let's have another round of applause for our CA by literacy [Applause] recipients you know what um my boss behind me very politely noted that we still have more Awards to give out so my apologies so hopefully it won't let me have it in private in private later um so we do have some outstanding student award so I'm going to um bring out the I believe Chico highas first for outstanding World language students is this the microphone yeah okay okay B my name is um Madame Pepe and I teach French CH Chico high school and um as always it's always so difficult to choose just one student um
013and this class in particular they started online um uh in Co and um and then came to the classroom and um and so they have come so far and it's a a small group of dedicated students and um so I always this is actually I don't actually like having to choose just one because I feel like they're all wonderful students and I because I'm the only French teacher I get to know them over the course of four years and they're just all all of them are just amazing students um however um here I am and uh this year's outstanding World Language student uh for French goes to Gabrielle Miller [Applause] for uh for her consistent hard work and dedication to her French studies over the course of these last four years [Applause] great hey there
014good evening I am mestra how and I teach Spanish 4 and Spanish 3 at Choi um our outstanding World Language student of the year for Spanish 4 goes to Matthew Yang who couldn't be here tonight but yay yeah I did want to just say a few words even though he's not here his enthusiasm and his dedication to becoming proficient in his second non-native language um is um inspiring and impressive and he always does bring such uh joyful bright energy to the classroom and for that I want to thank him so [Applause] Matthew and um I'm here with my amazing Department graas I don't know if we introduced ourselves but Madame pep Mr marinesco seora Salas uh junior Rosa and then Bianca Mor couldn't be here tonight but the outstanding World Language student um speakers and
015she's not even out here because she was a dancer [Applause] n so I don't know where she is gracias [Applause] and the PV staff is going to come out now to hand out the outstanding student awards for PV bu noes my name is Marcel greguar I teach Spanish here at pleas Valley High School I'd like to introduce um our world language Department um this is takes all of us together um to help these kids achieve their goals so I'm really proud to introduce Gretchen nans [Applause] marim [Applause] [Music] arano Janet Topete [Applause] Tarico noes I have given I have been given the privilege to present the outstanding language student award on behalf of the PB World Language Department to a dedicated young man Lance [Applause] cikb thanks for making your way up to the Grand
016stage Lance from the first time you stepped into our classes you immediately grasped onto the language and began using it every class period your ability to acquire and assist your peers was impressive while you are extremely proficient in the language you also bring a sense of enthusiasm and a lot of fun to the class your positive presence elevates all of our class discussions and you find joy in communicating in Spanish with your classmates your you don't hesitate to use your Spanish skills to communicate in our school community and we are certain that you don't shy away from opportunities in our local community the essence of our program is to produce proficient and caring students and we and we feel strongly that you represent what we work towards Lance we wish you the best in your
017future and hope that you will use the Spanish language in your life to help and assist those in your community f [Applause] I also have the honor to talk about the exceptional achievements of two young women who have embraced the learning of Spanish language with passion and dedication the Pleasant Valley World Language Department would like to present the award for outstanding language student to Ali divine [Applause] and also to Ava [Applause] dine yes Ally and AA are sisters yet they embody the essence of language learning in two beautifully and distinct ways Ava you have such a commitment to using language as a way to connect to the ideas of identity family and culture your ability to communicate on in-depth topics in Spanish is truly impressive your boundless curiosity and Relentless pursuit of proficiency Inspire us
018all the time yes me included you are not content to just sit and absorb what of being taught rather you venture to put the language to use and learn new ways to communicate better you push beyond your comfort zone and strive for greatness it has been such a joy to watch and be a small part of your language Journey all right Ally your inquisitive mind has allowed you to find ways to use language skills to serve others you have a spirit that is driven by a desire desire to make a difference you recently demonstrated this when you traveled to Guatemala on a service trip to build and beautify schools for young children your quiet determination speaks volumes you remind us that the true power of language lies in its ability to connect uplift and Empower
